Visa Appointment Wait Time

Check the estimated wait time for a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment for Austrian citizens and residents here: Travel.State.Gov

For nonresidents, the estimated wait times are:

Applying for a non-immigrant visa at u.s. consulate vienna.

Non-Immigrant Visa (NIV) applications, fee collection and appointment scheduling in Austria are handled by our partners, U.S. Travel Docs .   This is the ONLY private company authorized by U.S. Embassy Vienna to provide visa information and visa application services.

If you are unsure what visa you require, please see the Visa homepage and click on the Visa Wizard.   You are responsible for determining what visa class you need based on your purpose of travel and qualifications, paying the fee and scheduling your own appointment at US Consulate Vienna.   Consular staff cannot provide guidance, consultations or pre-adjudicate your case.

Step 1: Complete and Pay for U.S. Visa Application

All applicants are responsible for completing their own DS-160 visa application, paying the appropriate visa fee, and scheduling a visa interview using the U.S. Travel Docs website. ALL applicants require their own application and fees, including babies.

IMPORTANT: You CANNOT transfer an NIV application or fees from one Embassy to another. If you started a visa application with another U.S. Embassy or Consulate, you will need to create a new Vienna application through US Travel Docs , pay the fee again, and schedule an interview at US Consulate Vienna.

If you have questions or technical problems with their website, you must contact U.S. Travel Docs directly at +43 (0)720 11 6000 (from within Austria) or +1-703-520-2562 (from the United States); the Embassy cannot assist you as we have no control over third party websites.

Step 2: Schedule your Visa Interview

You must book an appointment at US Consulate Vienna using the same U.S. Travel Docs website where you completed your application and paid the fees.

Certain applicants with prior U.S. visas may qualify for interview waiver; see the U.S. Travel Docs website  for details. If you mail us your application and are NOT qualified for interview waiver program, your packet will be returned to you.

Wait Times: Due to COVID restrictions, the Ukraine conflict and the busy summer travel season, wait times in Vienna are longer than usual. See current wait times at U.S. Embassies and Consulates .   To avoid disappointment, we strongly recommend you apply long before your intended travel, even if you’re not sure of your final travel plans.   You do NOT need confirmed travel dates or airplane tickets to apply for a visa. In fact, we recommend you do not book any travel until your visa has been issued.   Please do not contact us regarding the first or earliest available interview appointment slot; all this information is on the US Travel Docs website.

Expedited Appointment Request: If a satisfactory appointment is not available in your visa category, choose any available date, then request for an expedited appointment by following these guidelines . Due to the sheer number of expedited requests, only true emergencies will be considered. Poor planning, such as waiting until the last minute to apply for ESTA or Visa is NOT considered an emergency.

Step 3: Appear for your in-person visa Interview

All visa interviews are held at the U.S. Consulate Vienna, located at Parkring 12A (Marriott Hotel building), A-1010 Vienna, Austria.   The entrance is located on the right plaza-side of the building.  Closest tram & metro stops: Weihburggasse (Tram #2), Stadtpark (U4), Stubentor (U3).

What to bring: Your DS-160 confirmation, any supporting documentation.

PASSPORT DELIVERY: You may chose between two options to receive your passport and U.S. visa:

Option 1:   Collection from the  “ Pack & Weg”  office located in Kettenbrückengasse 5, A-1050 Vienna, Austria. (This delivery option is free of charge.). Office Hours: Mo thru Fr, between 10:00am and 5:30pm – closed on Sat, Sun and Austrian holidays.

Option 2:    Premium Home Delivery within Austria with DHL courier service. You must register your delivery address and pay for the service by clicking on Premium Delivery and accessing the GTS courier platform.

If you have not done so yet, please log back into your  USTravelDocs prof ile , go to “Change Document Delivery Information” and choose how you would like to receive your passport back:

Note: Collection from the U.S. Consulate is not possible. If no delivery option is selected, your passport will be made available for personal collection at the Pack & Weg office in Kettenbrückengasse 5, Vienna, 1050. For more details about passport delivery options, please visit Track and Retrieve My Passport

PAYMENT METHODS & DETAILS

Visa fees must be paid online at the time of completing the application on the U.S. Travel Docs website.

Certain applicants may be required to pay additional fees, based on visa class and country of citizenship reciprocity schedules – consular staff will explain this at the time of your interview.   If your visa is approved, any additional fees must be paid in-person at the time of your interview by cash (Euros preferred) or major credit cards. We do NOT accept ATM, Debit or Bankomat cards, or checks accepted.

All visa fees are non-refundable, regardless of decision. All consular officer decisions are final; no appeals are possible.

  • If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you may bring a sign language interpreter to translate during the interview if needed.
