You can either take time to explore the neighborhood and have some lunch, or scale the Eiffel Tower. The choice is yours. Finally, you'll travel by coach out through the Parisian suburbs to the splendid Palace of Versailles, the vast regal château that was the residence of the royal family until the start of the revolution in 1789. In the evening, you can enjoy one of our optional cabaret shows in Paris (own expense). 【Departing from June 5th - Oct 2nd】 Mont Saint-Michel; It stands on the sea level, like a mystical island in the sea, often surrounded by vast stretches of sand that only become an island at low tide. When the tide rises, the water rushes in, turning the surroundings into a vast expanse. From a distance, the pyramid-shaped silhouette of Mont Saint-Michel emerges on the endless sea of sand, like a mirage, both enchanting and dreamlike. How to Travel From Amsterdam to Paris by Train, Bus, Car, and Plane

tour from netherlands to paris

Paris and Amsterdam are two of the most visited cities in Europe and anyone planning a Eurotrip more likely than not has both of these capital cities on their itinerary. Since they're so close together —just 260 miles apart as the crow flies—it makes sense to visit them back to back before exploring parts of the continent. A flight may seem like the fastest method of travel, but removing all of the airport hassles means the train is likely to get you there faster. The bus is the transport of choice for students and budget travelers, although it's also the slowest. If you want to rent a car, driving through Belgium is a nice way to break up the trip.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Amsterdam to Paris?

Although prices between buses, trains, and flights vary, the bus is usually the cheapest option with tickets starting as low as $23. It's also the slowest option, taking about seven hours if you book a non-stop journey (and potentially much longer if you have to transfer).

Even though buses are usually the most affordable, they aren't always. If you're on a tight budget, don't assume that trains or flights are too expensive since they're often around the same price as the bus—and sometimes cheaper, especially if you're booking early. Even if they are a bit more expensive, the extra cost may be worth the several hours of time you'll save by not taking the bus.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Amsterdam to Paris?

Even though a flight technically has the shortest transit time, once you add in the time it takes to travel to the airport, check in for your flight, pass through security, and wait at your gate, going by train is actually faster. The train ride is three hours and 20 minutes, but the Amsterdam Centraal Station and Paris Gare du Nord are both located right in their respective city centers. Plus, you can essentially arrive at a train station 15 minutes before your train departs and just hop on the train, skipping all of the headache of being at the airport.

With tickets starting at just $42, the train can be one of the more affordable options, as well. The caveat, however, is that you have to book your tickets in advance. Train prices go up quickly as seats sell out, so last-minute tickets or popular holiday periods can shoot up to over $150 for a one-way trip.

All in all, the train is the fastest, most comfortable, and—if you plan your trip right—also one of the most affordable methods of travel.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

A road trip from Amsterdam to Paris has a lot of perks to it. The trip takes under six hours in ideal conditions, but it's easy to break up with stops in major Belgian cities like Antwerp , Brussels, or Ghent . And if you're interested in exploring smaller towns that a train or bus would just pass through, taking your own vehicle is the only way to fully have control over the journey.

But driving comes with some significant drawbacks, as well. The route from Amsterdam to Paris is one of the busiest commuter ways in all of Europe and rush hour congestion can easily add a couple of hours to the trip. Even if you avoid the worst of traffic on the highways, trying to drive and park in Paris is a nightmare on a good day. If you're renting a car and not returning to Amsterdam, be aware that there are usually hefty fees for one-way car rentals .

How Long Is the Flight?

The time in the air is just an hour and 15 minutes, although the total travel time is much more. Even though the train ends up being faster than taking a flight, train tickets can potentially go up several times in price, especially for last-minute reservations. Flight deals, on the other hand, are easier to come by. Even in the popular summer months, there are so many flights between the two cities—many of them on low-cost airlines—that if you're flexible with your travel dates it's usually not difficult to find a cheap flight.

You should also pay attention to which airport you're flying into. The only airport in Amsterdam is Amsterdam Schiphol , but there are three major airports around Paris , some of them closer than others. Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports are the most convenient, but some low-cost airlines fly to Paris Beauvais, which is 75 minutes outside of the city via a bus that costs about $20.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Paris?

The busiest travel times are summer vacation, the winter holidays, and the week before Easter. Flights and trains will be the most expensive during all of these periods, so be sure to arrange all of your travel plans as early as possible.

The shoulder season of May or September is one of the best times to travel to Paris . Not only is it fully outside of the busy summer period, but the weather in spring and fall is the most comfortable of the entire year. Paris in December is very cold and filled with tourists, but there's something undeniably magical about spending the holidays in the City of Lights.

Do I Need a Visa to Travel to Paris?

Even though you are crossing an international border, France and the Netherlands are both in the Schengen Area which allows for visa-free travel between countries. If you have a U.S. passport, you can enter any country in the Schengen Area and stay for up to 90 days without a visa, as long as you're traveling for pleasure.

Can I Use Public Transportation to Travel From the Airport?

Passengers that arrive at Charles de Gaulle Airport can easily get to the city center via train or bus. The RER train is the cheapest method—and fastest if you arrive during rush hour—taking about 35 minutes and costing roughly $11 for a one-way trip. There are also bus options that usually take longer and cost more, but with more destination options inside the city, potentially getting you closer to your hotel. Taxis from Charles de Gaulle have a fixed cost depending on the part of Paris you're headed to, but fares start at 53 euros, or about $63.

Orly Airport is even closer to the city center than Charles de Gaulle, but there are no direct train lines into Paris. You can either take a train with a transfer or use the Orly Bus , which takes about 30 minutes and leaves passengers at Denfert-Rochereau Station. Since Orly is closer to the city center, taxis cost less. The fare is also fixed based on your final destination and starts at 32 euros, or about $38.

What Is There to Do in Paris?

Paris is one of the most desirable cities to visit in the world and the list of things to do is practically endless. The city is renowned for art, fashion, history, food, architecture, and just about everything else. Iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe are obligatory stops for any first-time visitor, and even repeat travelers return to these stunning monuments. Art lovers could spend a lifetime walking around the Louvre , but don't miss out on other museums like the Musée d'Orsay or the Pompidou . Splurging on some haute cuisine at a Parisian bistro is an elegant way to try the food, but there's nothing wrong with picking up some quality street food to enjoy in a park.

7 Best Ways to Travel from Amsterdam to Paris (Our Experience)

how to travel from amsterdam to paris

In this guide, my Dutch partner and I will be sharing our personal experiences and advice on what are the best ways to travel from Amsterdam to Paris.

As we live in Amsterdam for years now, we’ve had the pleasure of making this trip multiple times and gathered lots of tips and insights we can share with you.

Our last trip to Paris was last month, in May 2023, and we’ll share the latest transport methods, the good, and the bad.

So, whether you’re traveling for business or leisure, we hope our guide will help you make the best decisions.

Travel by Standard Train: An Alternative Option

From amsterdam to paris by train: speed & comfort, our experience with thalys.

us waiting for thalys train amsterdam centraal

📍 Place of Departure: Amsterdam Centraal 🏁 Place of Arrival: Gare du Nord, Paris ⏰ Total Duration Time: 3h 20min 💰 Costs: €45 (if booked in advance) – €250

Last month, on May 2023, we took a 1st class Thalys train from Amsterdam Centraal to Gare du Nord in Paris.

It’s a direct train, operated by Eurostar Group, which is amazing.

While we were waiting on the platform, a Thalys employee asked where do we have our seats and directed us to the perfect spot where we should wait to board the train immediately.

The train arrived in time and within 3 hours and 20 minutes , we were in Paris.

The ride itself felt luxurious, thanks to the roomy, comfortable seats we had, and the smooth ride.

Although our seat was tagged as a “window seat”, it offered a somewhat obstructed view, making it a half-window view experience.

However, that was a minor drawback we were more than willing to overlook considering the overall comfort.

We were surprised to see that the 1st class fare included a two-course meal, and drinks (coffee, tea, juice or water).

thalys meal with tea

We found the filter coffee rather strong and bitter, and the other items on the menu – chocolate mousse, fruit cake, raspberry jam, yogurt, bread, waffle, and a tomato, basil dish – were unfortunately quite bland.

dessert in train

While it’s convenient and doesn’t cost anything extra, if you’re hungry and want to snack on something delicious on the road, you might want to bring along some of your own snacks.

Tip: make sure to keep your luggage above your seat. We initially placed our luggage in the designated area, but we were advised by the train conductor to take our baggage above our seat, as it was safer.

The Thalys train offers two types of classes:

  • Standard Class: Offers comfortable seats, 2×2 configuration seats, free WiFi, and the option to purchase food and drinks from the onboard bar.
  • Comfort Class and Premium Class: These higher classes provide additional benefits such as more spacious seating, complimentary meals, and access to the Thalys lounges at certain stations.

from amsterdam to paris by train

📍 Place of Departure: Amsterdam Centraal 🏁 Place of Arrival: Gare du Nord, Paris ⏰ Total Duration Time: 6-7h 💰 Costs: Generally cheaper than Thalys, €35 – €180

If Thalys doesn’t fit into your budget, you can opt for a standard train service, usually the IC Brussels.

The journey will be longer, with stops in between – typically around 6-7 hours, but comes at a lower cost than the Thalys service.

Although it’s not a direct train, it’s still a valid option to go to Paris.

Traveling by Bus

flixbus station amsterdam

📍 Place of Departure: Various bus stations in Amsterdam (depending on the bus company) 🏁 Place of Arrival: Various bus stations in Paris (depending on the bus company) ⏰ Total Duration Time: 6-8h 💰 Costs: Starting from €15

Traveling from Amsterdam to Paris by bus is the cheapest option, but also the longest and least comfortable one.

The journey can take anywhere from 6 to 8 hours depending on traffic conditions and stops in between.

Tickets range from €15-€40, making this a good option if you want to save money. We recommend Flixbus of BlaBlaCar.

Traveling by Flight

travel from amsterdam to paris by plane

📍 Place of Departure: Amsterdam Airport Schiphol 🏁 Place of Arrival: Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris ⏰ Total Duration Time: 1h 10min (flight time, excluding check-in, security, and airport commuting time) 💰 Costs: €50 – €150

You can also opt for a “quick” flight, which typically takes just over an hour.

However, when adding up the time spent at the airport for security and check-in, as well as how long it takes to arrive at and from the airport, this “quick flight” is actually a 5+ hours total trip.

Prices can range significantly based on the airline and time of booking, from €50 to over €200.

Even if you choose a budget airline, if you want to take a checked-in suitcase, you’ll end up paying always more.

Driving to Paris: On Your Own Terms

📍 Place of Departure: Anywhere in Amsterdam 🏁 Place of Arrival: Anywhere in Paris ⏰ Total Duration Time: 5-6h 💰 Costs: Variable (fuel, tolls, car rental)

Driving to Paris gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace.

If you want to rent a car, we recommend SunnyCars as they already include all the insurance in the price and it’s a hassle-free experience.

The distance between Amsterdam and Paris is about 430 kilometers and can take around 5-6 hours of drive time.

Remember to factor in additional costs like fuel, tolls, and car rental.

Private Car Transfer: Luxury, Comfort, and Convenience

📍 Place of Departure: Anywhere in Amsterdam 🏁 Place of Arrival: Anywhere in Paris ⏰ Total Duration Time: 5-6h 💰 Costs: Pricing available on Get Your Guide

If you’re looking for a luxurious way to get to Paris, and you have a higher budget for it, consider a private car transfer service.

You can book this service through various platforms such as Get Your Guide .

This option provides door-to-door service and allows you to enjoy the journey without the stress of driving or navigating.

Luxury Travel: Private Jet

private jet

📍 Place of Departure: Chosen private jet facility in Amsterdam 🏁 Place of Arrival: Chosen private jet facility in Paris ⏰ Total Duration Time: Approx. 1h 30min 💰 Costs: €4000-€10000

If cost is no concern, you could pay for a seat in a private jet for the ultimate luxury travel experience.

Safe to say, this method of transportation offers unmatched levels of privacy, luxury, and convenience.

Hi, I'm Gerrit

I enjoy sharing useful tips about the beauty of this county.

Are you thinking about a trip to Paris from Amsterdam?

You’re in the right spot. I have traveled from Amsterdam to Paris many times in my life.

Imagine strolling down the Seine , savoring a flaky croissant in a charming café, or marveling at the iconic Eiffel Tower. Just like Emily in Paris?

Hang on a second. Isn’t this a Holland blog ? Shouldn’t you be talking about canals, tulips, and windmills?

You’re right, and I talk plenty about that . But one of the great things about Amsterdam is that it has fantastic fast connections to Paris and Disneyland Paris.

Many people think going to Amsterdam or Paris are two different trips. But do you know you can easily combine both destinations within one trip? Even a day trip is possible.

Especially today, with high-speed trains from Amsterdam to Paris connecting the two cities often daily. And with a journey time from Amsterdam to Paris of just three hours and 20 minutes. It’s easy to see that this is a great competitor to air travel.

This post reviews the pros and cons of the three main travel options between these two bucket list destinations . Helping you to decide what fits best for you.

But if you’re in a hurry, here is the best way to travel from Amsterdam to Paris :

  • The train is the most convenient option for most travelers. It takes just over 3 hours, center to center. I upgrade myself to 1st class when I take the train, and I advise you to do the same. It’s quieter, and you’ll have more room. Find International train tickets to Paris here.
  • Flying will not save you time , but it can be a better choice if you include Paris as a stop in your itinerary. Using the multi-city function when booking helps you with that. You can use Kayak to compare flights for finding the best price.
  • The bus is a low-cost way to travel to Paris. The journey takes long, though, and I personally would not choose it, but if you’re on a budget, it can work. Here is a great tool to compare Bus tickets .

But do keep reading because below, I share many more tips and details about these travel methods that will help you save time and money .

Best way to get from amsterdam to paris.

There are three viable options to travel from Amsterdam to the city of light. By train, airplane, or coach.

Want to know my personal preference?

I prefer to travel by high-speed train in first class . It’s affordable, super fast, city center to city center (no transfers to and from airports), and while standard class (2nd) can feel cramped, it’s the opposite in first class.

I’m 6″4′, and I need space for these long legs . But even if you’re short, having some space for yourself is pleasant. Wifi in first class is also faster than in 2nd class.

The plane is an excellent second alternative if trains are booked, or when they are super expensive, or you have another reason for traveling by plane (maybe you have miles, or you used a multi-city ticket, or you stay near the airport).

I will tell you all about this option further down this article . I’ve flown between these two cities many times in my lifetime. And it’s still a good alternative.

The final option to get to the city of love we cover is traveling by coach, the cheapest way to get to Paris .

Many buses leave from Amsterdam to Paris. However, the journey takes much longer, but it will be cheap. If you are on a budget, this might be an option.

Let’s explore all three options below in depth.

Paris is the city of love. Here are some great tips for things to do in Paris for couples .

Amsterdam To Paris Train (The Preferred Option)

Thalys train from Amsterdam to Paris.

Let’s start with the train because a train ride is the preferred option for most travelers. Thalys (now called Eurostar) is the high-speed train service between Amsterdam Central Station and Paris.

The name has recently changed to Eurostar since they’re now bought by Eurostar (the fast trains from Amsterdam to London and London to Paris).

Thalys trains (Eurostar) run between Amsterdam, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Brussels, and Paris every day of the week from early morning to the evening.

I know people search for when the first train from Amsterdam leaves or the last train , but you’ll find different times online, and all sites claim a different time to be the first or the last train.

I don’t want to burn my fingers printing the exact times here and risk publishing nonsense. Train timetables change , and departures are different on different days of the week.

This Is Where You Find The Correct Thalys Departure Times

Find train times directly from the railways website here for your preferred departure dates. You can click to search for availability, departure times, and the cheapest tickets, including a direct option to book your Amsterdam to Paris train tickets.

Amsterdam to Paris Train Price

Booking your tickets well in advance is essential because prices go up quickly. The booking system opens up about four months in advance . Ticket prices start at €35 in standard class and €50 in first class. But these prices are sold out in the blink of an eye. Expect prices around €70-€120 one-way, depending on the class of travel.

You can check current Amsterdam to Paris train prices here with the train company.

Amsterdam to Paris Train Duration:

The average travel time between Central Amsterdam and Paris Nord (Paris Gare du Nord) is just over 3 hours . The train will get you there super quick.

Even though a flight might seem quicker , with a flight time of just 75 minutes, you have to consider the travel time between the airport and the city center and the time you need to allow for security. Changes are the train is a lot quicker for most of us.

Tips For Traveling to Paris By Train

  • Book tickets for the Amsterdam Paris train well in advance. This is one of the most popular train routes from Amsterdam (internationally) , so booking Thalys tickets is essential.
  • The lowest prices are usually available if you book round-trip train tickets, but the difference for a one-way is only slightly more.
  • Tickets from Amsterdam to Paris can start from €35 one-way for your train journey.
  • Most are direct trains . You can travel from Amsterdam to Paris without the need to transfer trains. Extra departures are available with one transfer in Brussels.
  • Trains depart frequently. Usually, it’s no more than two hours until the next train to Paris , also on the weekend.
  • There are (in season) also direct trains from Amsterdam to Disneyland Paris and Charles de Gaulle Airport . If there are no direct services when visiting, you can always book them with a transfer in Brussels.
  • Thalys trains depart from Amsterdam Centraal Station . This is the correct Amsterdam train station for Thalys departures.
  • You’ll arrive at Paris Gare du Nord , The central Paris train station for arrivals from the North.
  • From here it’s easy getting around Paris on the extensive metro system or take a taxi.
  • Tickets you book on this route are train specific, so check the conditions of your ticket carefully (they’re similar to planes). If you need flexibility in your journey, book a more flexible ticket to avoid stress.
  • WIFI is included and available for all passengers, just like power outlets. But the service is much faster in first class.
  • A dining car (cafe) is available on most departures. If you travel first class, a light meal is included.
  • First-class travelers have free access to the Lounges at Amsterdam (Regus Express platform 1) and Paris (Lounge & More – 22 rue de Dunkerque, Paris).
  • Trains leave from different platforms depending on the departure time. And platforms are always subject to change. Make sure to check the train information screens at the station before you head to the platform.

PS: Everything I wrote above also applies to taking to the train from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Paris. All trains stop after leaving Amsterdam Central Station, also at the Airport before they head south to Paris.

Thalys from Amsterdam to Disneyland Paris (now Eurostar)

I’ve mentioned Disneyland Paris before, but I wanted to highlight it here. One is because I am a major Disney fan. I have held multiple season passes for Disney in Orlando and Paris. I would not have had a mortgage if I had not spent all that money on Disney merchandise.

The other reason is that Disney Paris has something truly unique, and that is its own high-speed rail station at the entrance gates of the Magic Kingdom and the Walt Disney Studios Park. How cool is that? This is what I would call arriving in style.

In season, there are quite a few direct departures with Thalys from Amsterdam, the airport, and Rotterdam to Mickey. If not, you can easily purchase tickets year-round with a simple transfer to Brussels.

Flight From Netherlands to Paris – Still A Good Alternative

Plane at the gate in Amsterdam.

Another way to visit Paris is to travel by air between Amsterdam and Paris . It’s a great option if you don’t like train travel. Or when you have miles to spend, you need to be near the airport, or when you prefer to stay at an Airport hotel.

The Paris to Amsterdam flight time is 75 minutes . You arrive most often at Charles de Gaulle Airport . This is the main airport in Paris. Flights are mainly operated by KLM and Air France (the same company).

With such a monopoly, you expect higher ticket prices, but with so many departures a day mainly used as feeder flights, remaining seats tend to be pretty affordable.

But do take into account the costs of airport transfers .

Another airline is Transavia , which flies between these two cities. My friend Sylke is a flight attendant with Transavia, so if you catch her, do say hi. She is amazing.

They connect Amsterdam to Paris Orly , a secondary Paris airport. It’s connected by the same RER line (B) as Charles de Gaulle but smaller. Orly is at the south end of the city. KLM and Air France also operate some flights to Paris Orly.

But for most people, arriving at Charles de Gaulle is more convenient since it has more flights and more ground transportation options.

How To Get From Paris Charles de Gaulle to Paris City Center?

The easiest way to travel between Charles the Gaulle and the city (or to Orly Airport or Disney) is by booking a private transfer . Your driver will meet you with a nameplate at the airport and help you with your luggage.

There is a cost to this, but it’s also convenient. And you might be surprised to find that it is pretty much priced the same as a taxi, but then without the wait .

Book Your Airport Transfer Ahead of Time

Why get in line at the taxi queue at the airport, when you can also book a private driver?

Your driver will be waiting for you in the terminal building with a sign, at the price of a regular taxi.

Get Transfer offers the best-priced personal driver transfers from airports worldwide, including Amsterdam.

TIP: Download the App .

Book Yourself a Private Transfer

When I arrive at Charles de Gaulle, I usually opt for trains to Paris (RER B train). These are suburban trains, uncomfortable and not great with much luggage, but direct and the fastest.

There are also shuttle buses to the Opera stop operated by Air France, but these tend to be more expensive, and you must be precisely in that area.

The Metro/RER gives you more flexibility. If you take the RER, be mindful of your surroundings and possessions.

Airport taxis will be expensive, but above all, they can be tediously slow and unreliable. Paris traffic is notorious. I ran a store for over 12 years, and one of my suppliers was a cash-and-carry wholesale in Paris. Since they would not ship.

I took the journey countless times by car. And as soon as Paris Airport came into sight, so came the traffic jams. I would opt for the private transfer instead since those prices are fixed. With a taxi, you also pay for waiting time in traffic.

Getting from Charles de Gaulle Airport to Disneyland Paris

If you travel to Disneyland Paris from Charles de Gaulle, there are four options.

One is a trick not many people know about, but I use it myself when flying in, and I want to share it with you.

  • Travel to the parks by Coach > Coaches are comfortable, Disney branded, and have WIFI aboard. The trip takes about an hour, depending on where you want to get off once you get to Disney. You can buy your Disney Airport transfer here .
  • Take RER B, and transfer to RER A to Disneyland (takes 90-120 minutes). This option is slightly cheaper but cumbersome, with a transfer to the city’s heart. You need a ticket for 5 zones.
  • My hack: take a high-speed TGV train between Charles de Gaulle and Disneyland Paris (Marne-la-Valley/Chessy). This is relatively expensive if you buy your ticket directly at the station or from SNCF, but buying it here with my link can be cheaper than the bus! And the best of it all, in just 9 minutes, you’re whisked straight to the entrance gates of the Magic Kingdom. Oh, it’s worth every single penny to get there that fast.
  • Take a Private transfer: You can also book a chauffeured car. Your driver will meet you at the airport with a name sign and take you straight to Disneyland. You can book your Private transfer ride from Charles de Gaulle to Disneyland here.

Take A Trip to Paris Almost For Free: Hello Stopover Tickets

Love to travel for free? I certainly do.

One cheap way to get from Amsterdam to Paris, almost FREE, is by utilizing a Stopover or Multi-City flight ticket , which not many people do or even think about.

What is it?

Instead of booking a ticket from, say, New York to Amsterdam. You can also book a ticket from New York to Amsterdam as the final destination and make a free stopover in Paris.

Or, of course, you can also book a ticket to Paris and make a free stopover in Amsterdam. You can do this on the outbound leg of your journey, the return, or both. Often, you pay nothing extra compared to a simple return ticket.

It could look like this :

  • Leg 1: New York – Amsterdam
  • Leg 2: Amsterdam – Paris
  • Leg 3: Paris – New York

Make sure you choose a flight operated by Delta, KLM, or Air France (since their base is in Amsterdam or Paris ).

To utilize this on a flight booking tool , do not select Roundtrip, but Multi City instead. Not many people know about this, but it’s a great travel hack I often use when traveling.

Open Jaw Ticket

An open jaw is about the same but slightly different. Here, you book a plane ticket to one destination and fly back from another.

For example, when we stay with our New York example. You can book a ticket from New York to Amsterdam. But return from Paris to New York. You use the multi-city screen again.

  • Leg 2: Paris – New York

This can also be a cheap option for both cities. For the journey from Amsterdam to Paris you can book a one-way ticket by High-Speed train.

You can easily find flight deals like this in tools like Kayak , or Expedia .

The Cheapest Way From Amsterdam to Paris

Flixbus.

It’s also possible to travel the distance between Amsterdam and Paris by coach . I did it in my early twenties since it was cheap and I could save a hotel night. But it was not comfortable.

Today, coaches are more comfortable and offer services like free WIFI. But still, sleeping upright? I’m personally too old for that.

The bus from Amsterdam to Paris leaves both during the day and night, but either way, they take quite some time. Expect a travel time of 6-8 hours. For most of us, it is not the best way to travel because of that.

However, for budget travelers and the young (at heart), long-distance buses are an economical option compared to the train.

Flixbus and BlaBlaBus operate long-distance buses. They are usually the cheapest and most popular, especially among young adults. Make sure you carry headphones and a comfortable pillow! Also, be mindful that luggage can be restricted, just as with airlines.

Buses leave in the Amsterdam Area from Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam Sloterdijk, Amstel Station, or Bijlmer Station. Those are all on the outskirts of Amsterdam . In Paris, busses arrive at different bus stations along the Périphérique (the ring road of Paris). From here, there are always connections on the local metro network to Paris.

Preparing For Your Trip

Now that you’ve chosen your preferred mode of transport, let’s delve into some valuable tips and advice to ensure your journey from Amsterdam to Paris is as seamless and enjoyable as possible.

The high-speed train, the airlines, and even the busses have similar restrictions to luggage.

However, despite how little airline luggage allowances sound, it’s already too much for a European trip. You will quickly realize that when you’re hauling it around.

This is the old world, and I can tell you it is no fun hauling large luggage up and down stairs and onto cobblestone streets.

Those flywheel trolleys and suitcases may have looked so comfortable at Costco or Walmart, but once you get to the first cobblestone street or stairs-only entrances at the Paris metro, you will curse them .

Make sure to pack lightly . You must comfortably lift your luggage by hand without breaking your back.

Believe me, I have a bad back, and I know what I’m talking about. I had my learning moments .

My advice is a backpack over a trolley any day. And if needed one small suitcase. Don’t bring your entire wardrobe from home—especially not your shoe collection.

You’re traveling, dress smart with layers, and have a set of comfy shoes and maybe an extra easy-to-carry pair to dress up. Remember the age-old advice : you can always buy anything at your destination.

What To Do When You Get To Paris

There is plenty to do in Paris , of course. A great way to familiarize yourself with a new city is by taking a tour. There are two companies I want to recommend.

With Locals

A Dutch company now across the world. Most of your money stays with the local host, which I like a lot. And their strict vetting guarantees high quality.

Take a local tour in Paris with a private guide.

Another great company to check is Eat With. They specialize in food experiences with locals, often in their own homes.

There is no better way to connect than being invited to someone’s home and enjoying (or helping prepare) a meal together.

There are plenty of opportunities in Paris, from Crepe making to Sauce classes and so much more. You can check all Eat With in Paris experiences here.

Go City Paris

I have used a Go City Amsterdam (review) myself recently, and I loved it. They also have a Paris Pass, and I think it offers incredible value.

With so many things included . Like a boat ride along the Seine River, a guided climb on the Eiffel Tower, large Museums like the Louvre, and much more. It’s an incredible value.

More information about the Go City Paris Pass can be found here.

Disneyland Paris

I already told you I’m a big Disney fan. So, I have to include this. The Disney castle in Paris is the prettiest, I think, in the world. New rides have just opened in the Movie Park. There has not been a better time to have a visit than now.

Get your tickets in advance . Disney stopped selling tickets at the entrance gate. You can buy them here:

Or here a starting point for a two days in Paris itinerary.

Stay Connected

Whether you need to check the latest train departure information, find your way to or from the train stations, or share your travel photos with friends back home, staying connected is crucial .

Consider getting a local SIM card . Most trains and buses offer free WiFi, but having your data ensures you’re always connected. It’s also more private and faster.

I’ve written a post on the best European eSIM card here. This card work is all over the EU, including The Netherlands, Belgium, and France.

The Lowest Priced And Most Flexible eSIM cards (incl. tethering)

Stop searching for WI-FI; get an affordable eSIM for all of Europe. Whether you travel to The Netherlands, France, Germany, Belgium or any other EU country.

From just $5 for 1GB, but I recommend at least 10GB . TIP: Get the App for easy top-up.

We left one hour late because of technical difficulties. The economy comfort seats are great for the price. The crew was mediocre, they do not provide a pleasant experience, they just deliver food and drinks and give orders, not very amicable, no service and hospitality focus.

The food was ok. The crew seemed like they were cranky. I had one guy get mad at me for passing in between the storage area to get to the other toilet. I can understand if it's not allowed but reprimanding me like I'm a student saying "This is the last time!" was not appropriate. During my meal time, there was a French family around me. No problems there but when we usually have meals, they are supposed to put their chair in the upright position. These people did not do it and the steward did not tell them to raise their seat in the upright position. However, I was told to do so! So, me and another person next to me had to eat with the monitor almost touching our faces. Furthermore, a lady in front of me was putting her feet up and preventing another elder passenger from putting her seat back. To make it worse, she was continuously hitting her back into her seat, shaking my monitor while I was watching a movie. A crew member did speak to her about it but then she accused me of pushing her seat forward! The crew member gave me a death stare and told me to stop pushing the seat forward. I did not even touch her seat at all, if I did, she would know it. Her boyfriend also stood up and tried to push her seat even further past the maximum decline to no avail. None of these people were reprimanded but the steward, some bald guy, was extremely friendly with them and did not even try to instruct them to do anything until it was time to land. I resisted the urge to really argue with them because I would have obviously been seen as the aggressor (I have no idea why). I hardly said anything on this flight except "more wine please" and "sorry" if I bumped into someone accidentally. Overall, it was an annoying flight and I had to resist the urge to yell at the steward and the people he was overly friendly with. The happiest moment of this flight was leaving it.

The worst airline. Cancelled flight 30 min before boarding and rebooked on flight after 3 days.

It was nice to be on a legacy airline, people try at least.

Mostly fine. Minor delays departing and arriving. Quite a cramped plane, not so much as regards legroom but very narrow seats. Quiet nice food. Non-working USB charger. Flight attendants were helpful but not particularly proactive — one had to work to get their attention (but all was fine once they notice you), very Dutch style:)

The flight itself it was great nice food the crew were very nice and helpful, Checking in from Birmingham wasn't great long queues for bag dropped, And I had my hand luggage case taken away from me even though I requested to have it with me as I had breakables items. I was told I can not because of the length of the flight with no explanation at all no options was given for me to take my fragile items out of my case it was taken away with hold buggage I find the staff member who was checking me in very unpleasant !! Can we please be advise if the rules have changed about the the carry on hand luggage it will be easier to be advise on booking your tickect if we not allowed to take the hand luggage with me. Overall I had a good flight .

The food quality is poor. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The entertainment program was limited. I experienced a delay of 30 minutes due to two issues. Passenger luggage had to be removed and there was a technical issue with the stairs not detaching from the aircraft. The pilot managed to compensate and we arrived only 15 minutes later. The luggage at Dubai airport was very slow. I waited over an hour.

Amazing KLM service and brilliant economy comfort seats. Well worth the extra.

All and all pretty good. It’s crowded but that is what flying is all about. But no complaints otherwise.

one of my bags was drenched with fish smelling water and all my new clothes bought at dublin and the 23kg checked in bag were all gone waste with very pungent fish smell and also having stains

Did not find the wheelchair that supposed to assist and went to a long queue for transit security chk which was very slow and boarding desk wanted to close counter although that they knew that I am minutes away because of their mistake of not providing the wheelchair.

Boarding was smooth and on time. The seat was comfortable and the entertainment worked. Staff were gracious.

Business class in the second leg - CDG-EVN was a disaster.

I have used Air France and KLM many times it will help if they change their menu's feel like it's been the same for years!!!, Especially the breakfast. Overall the flight was good and enjoyable.

No birding was given for next trip on same carrier, food was very moderate.

We transited through Chad and what was supposed to be a 1hr 20 minutes transit time lasted over 4hrs. We didn't get regular updates until we complained. After a 10hr flight from Paris no form of refreshment given and finally arrived Abuja over 6hrs later and none of my bags came

The line at boarding was not well organized and managed

Sky priority means you get to use the KLM business Lounge.

Je n'ai pas pû incliner mon siège et une des hôtesses ne comprenait pas ce que je disais. Je devais parler fort

their gluten free lactose meal is the best, I have never been satisfied with my flight meals. I definitely enjoyed my flight and the chair is very spacious for economy. I'm so glad Delta is my flight way back to NY.

Being on time rather than almost 3 hours late would be a start, and also, since it was known from a long time ago that the flight would be late, letting us know ahead so we don’t stay in a small hall at the airport would have been nice

Transit through Cairo was abysmal and I will never repeat this journey !!!

Être avertie SMS/mail du retard/changements d'horaire avant les 5min du décollage initial..

There was a delay of more than an hour due to technical issues on a previous flight, can happen so I don't foult the airline for that. The crew was excellent and very friendly and boarding was pretty efficient. The seats were comfortable enough. However, if you are over 1,80m, don't expect any room for your legs, the room between the rows is extremely tight!

As there are a lot of persons for the boarding and as you open the two doors of the plane, could be ingenious to ask the persons who have the first numbers (for the seats) to enter via the front door and those you are more at the end of the plane to enter by the other door. This would avoid to have passengers who entes by the front door and have to go to the back with luggages. Crazy and waste of time.

There was delay of 2 hours and all related announcements at the gate were done in French. It is not acceptable on international flight! The sandwich that I paid €6 for, was dry, hard and impossible to eat it. This is really a shame for French airline serving such sandwich.

Cancelled while we were waiting at the airport and the flight ready for boarding because of only one Stewart missing! Unacceptable! We were proposed another flight: 5 days later! Unacceptable! We had to pay other tickets of course very expensive the same day!

Your nasty smart , The seat too tight You have to pay for everything 5h20 min Flight with no food no water nothing .I didnt take my Medicine Because I don't have no water The worst trip that I have in my life.1st time flying with Transavia its going to be the last time . I am so disappointed

Boarding was slow and cabin crew was even slowing down the process.

There’s no point in paying for priority if we all just end up in the same queue at the same place

The flight was delayed one hour. Soon after, I got an email saying that the flight was moved for the next day at midnight, changing my entire plans at the destination. I went to the gate to see what was going on and they were actually boarding and in their last call! It was very confusing and stressful because I nearly miss the flight for the miscommunication.

Schiphol airport needs to get their stuff together. I had to wait one hour at the passport control for EU national ID members, not the international one that they were waiting for 4 hours, and the baggage claim had an other hour on top of delays. That is insane, trying to exit the airport, at this point just let me get my own bag from the luggage compartment.

No water or light snacks, unless you pay a lot of money for it. Zero leg space

Yeah, allow us to bring our carry-on luggage without charging more. I've never seen another airline do this, and decreases your chances of my using you again.

Booked priority boarding but all passengers boarded at the same.

Not Transavia item, but baggie claim took more than 30 min

Flight delayed. Information was sent via SMS which was helpfull, but also misleading: First message indicated only a change of type of airplane. The second about a delay. No update on revised delay time later. No good follow-up on boarding time etc afterwards,

The luggage handling at arrival was extremely slow. The indication "first luggage on belt" was not correct at all. This is the second time it arrives to me and I will choose other carriers as a consequence.

Waiting too long before getting on the plane. No communication, slow...horrible

Horrible they wouldn’t let my wife and daughter board the plane. They stated there was an issue with her visa when she clearly showed them how to look it up online. This resulted in her missing her flight and having to buy a different airline ticket for the same day in which clearly there was no problem.

Did not appreciate being bumped from the seat I selected during checkin the day before the flight by an overbidding fellow passenger… I am also a paying customer Lufthansa!

Some people facilitating gate onboarding weren’t as cordial. Didn’t feel good about my experience

Great except my luggage was. Lost my entire. Trip and I had. To go buy things and waste. Time trying to find. My luggage

Le personnel attentionné et trilingue, la tranquillité du vol. Aucun aspect négatif

Good in general but I’m missing a bag So will see how long it will take to send it back

I would not fly again with Discover or Lufthansa. Every leg of the flight was either late (3+ hours) or cancelled at short notice. No alcohol supplied unless purchased.

I lost my luggage in this flight with all my personal belonging including critical medications and until now no one from Lufthansa contacted me despite filling the claim immediately after arriving to the final distinction.

Clean bathrooms They wreaked of urine Seats were very uncomfortable No room for my legs

International train travel is becoming increasingly popular among passengers in the Netherlands. Naturally, train companies are responding by working on even more direct lines. Hoera!

Here are a few of the confirmed plans! 👇

Warsaw, Poland 🇵🇱

Plac Zamkowy square in Warsaw, Poland, soon reachable by international trains from the Netherlands

What lies right behind Czechia? Beautiful Poland, of course! How great would it be if the European Sleeper to Prague continued to Warsaw?! 🤩

Did you just say “super great”? Then you’re in luck! Because those are the exact plans of the company.

Although a launch date for this route is not yet known, the intention is that the night train to Prague will also get a number of carriages that go all the way to the Polish capital. 🇵🇱

Barcelona, Spain 🇪🇸

View-of-Barcelona-from-damous-wall-in-park-guell-reached-by-international-train-from-the-netherlands

If sunshine is calling, any Nederlander will answer. Well, good news for the Dutch: EuropeanSleeper doesn’t just have its eye on Warsaw but also on Barcelona !

Taking passengers from several stations in the Netherlands to Spain’s picturesque heart, the sleeper is expected to get here by the spring of 2025. 💃

Whether travelling by international train is the right thing for you is up to you to decide. Nonetheless, we’ve compiled some pros and cons to help you make up your mind.

  • It’s super eco-friendly!
  • It’s a lot faster than travelling by bus.
  • During your journey, you can easily work or relax.
  • You can avoid traffic jams.
  • It’s a great option for people who are afraid of flying.
  • It can be pricey.
  • Most of the time, it’s slower than flying.
  • Trains can be crowded and noisy. (Noise-cancelling headphones can help!)
  • You might be less flexible once you arrive at your destination (but the same goes for flying).
  • Trains can be unreliable.

Most tickets for international trains from the Netherlands can conveniently be ordered on NS international’s website , or at a physical NS counter at a train station.

However, if you want to save some bucks, it may be worth checking the websites of the respective train carriers first (for example Eurostar, European Sleeper and Nightjet). They sometimes have better offers or special deals.

While international trains from the Netherlands are A-MAZING in themselves, here are some tips to follow that will make your trip even more pleasant.

  • If you’re trying to secure cheap tickets (because why wouldn’t you?), book early. If you book far enough in advance, tickets can be up to €100 to €200 cheaper.
  • Always book your journey from your actual station of departure, instead of using your own OV-chipcard for the Dutch part of the trip. This is cheaper and saves you the hassle of having to check in twice.
  • If you’re looking to go away for a long weekend, it’s cheaper to go from Saturday to Monday than from Friday to Sunday.
  • When travelling on an international train from the Netherlands, remember to bring your ID or passport, and residence permit (if you have one). Even if you don’t go through a security check, your documents could be checked at customs.
  • Don’t forget to take out some cash before leaving the Netherlands. While the Netherlands likes to do everything by bankpas , other countries might not.
  • If tickets for your desired destinations are not available yet, make sure to set yourself a reminder in your calendar. Remember: The early bird catches the worm.

Now, what are you waiting for? Time to book that train journey to the destination of your dreams!

Hopefully, these international trains from the Netherlands will make travelling as easy-breezy as the Dutch coast.
