Customer Reviews

We're so happy we decided to register for this stroller bundle for our twins! The bundle was a seamless way to ensure we received all of the necessary components to use this stroller as a fully modular system. Our favorite aspect of this stroller is the suspension - it can handle the bumpy broken sidewalks of los angeles like a boss. We also love how all of the components click in and out of the stroller quickly and easily. 10/10 recommend for twins.

We could not be happier with our purchase of the UPPAbaby Vista V2 Twin Stroller and Mesa V2 Travel System! We loved that we did not have to individually add all the adapters and extras for our twin system. It made the buying process so much easier without worrying that we were forgetting an essential component to make it a double stroller. We purchased the stroller in Gregory Blue Melange and the color is beautiful, too! Highly recommend.

The absolute best bundle out there for twins. We literally couldn’t love it any more. Amazing stroller, brand & bundle!

We've unboxed and put together our twin travel system. Looks and feels like good quality. You get a lot of valuable items and accessories with this. But yeah---We spent the extra money on this one because my wife sometimes travels to Cleveland and we discussed the need for "travel bassinets". We went back and forth on whether or not they were necessary due to the short time-span they'll be needed. There was no option to buy this twin travel system without the bassinets so we just decided to go with it. For some reason, we were thinking that you could unclick the bassinets from the stroller and place them on a bed or a surface for sleeping. Like hey, "we won't need to bring 2 whole bassinet setups 3 hours away because we'll have these traveling bassinets." Unfortunately that is not the case. The bassinets collapse in on themselves when placed on a solid surface. They ONLY work while clicked into the stroller. Wish we would've known that before buying. We would've simply bought a different product that doesn't have bassinets and done a different solution for that. I'm not saying I was misled or anything because we made the incorrect assumption. It was just disappointing to realize this the hard way.

This is a high quality system for twins. It is easy to assemble and convenient to use, highly recommend this product

Chicco Corso LE Modular Travel System - Veranda - $599.99.

Chicco Corso LE Modular Travel System - Veranda

  • Great combo of features, price + performance
  • Stroller can be used as a frame carrier
  • Includes parent-favorite car seat

What Our Experts Say

The price of a travel system can range from a few hundred dollars to well over a thousand. The Chicco Corso Travel System sits squarely in the middle of that price range and has a lot to offer, making it one of our favorite travel systems on the market. The car seat, the KeyFit 35, is a popular parent favorite that’s easy to install, packed with safety features and fits most babies really well. (It also works well for extended rear-facing use, with a good amount of headrest room and a weight maximum of 35 pounds.) The stroller shares many features with high-end strollers that cost upwards of a thousand dollars, including large, foam-filled tires and rear-wheel suspension for a smooth ride, a multi-position reclining seat, an adjustable canopy and footrest and leatherette trim. The stroller seat is fully removable, turning it from a full-featured toddler stroller into a lightweight, skeleton frame that’s much easier to manage when you’re using it with just the infant car seat.

What’s Worth Considering

If you want to spend a little less, check out the brand’s Bravo Trio Travel System . You’ll get the same infant car seat as part of the package deal, but not the same stroller—the Trio has plastic wheels instead of rubber and the ride isn’t as smooth as compared to the Corso. Parents also say the materials overall are a bit less durable. But considering the price, it’s still an excellent choice if you’re in the market for a solid travel system. favorite.

What Babylist Parents Say

“As a CPST I trust Chicco and all of their products. The ease of the KeyFit35 install is to die for. The car seat also feels comfortable and sturdy. I also love this stroller! The one-hand fold and the sleek design. It looks beautiful with the flower-like wheels and leather handle. It’s also a beautiful color. I would recommend to anyone.” -Patience Mabin

Additional Specs

Best More Affordable Baby Travel System

Evenflo Pivot Modular Travel System w/Litemax - Desert Tan - $319.99.

Evenflo Pivot Modular Travel System w/Litemax - Desert Tan

  • Higher-end features at affordable price
  • Six different stroller seating configurations
  • Car seat exceeds industry safety standards

Parents rave about this travel system that offers so much for so little, and we couldn’t agree more. The Pivot has features we’ve come to expect from much pricier strollers, like the option to turn the regular seat into a newborn bassinet, a large canopy, a seat that can face forward or toward you and a removable child tray. The Litemax infant car seat that’s included far exceeds industry standards and is a favorite of CPSTs (Child Passenger Safety Technicians, AKA car seat safety experts). The base is made of impact-absorbing materials and has an anti-rebound bar to deflect the force of a crash, along with lots more impressive safety features.

The car seat included here is really where this travel system shines, especially for the price. The stroller doesn’t handle uneven terrain all that well, and parents complain that the wheels start to squeak over time. Users also note that attaching the car seat to the stroller may take a bit of finesse.

If you’re looking for a similarly affordable travel system that also converts from a single to a double stroller, check out the Evenflo Pivot Xpand Travel System with Litemax .

Craving a few upgrades? Take a look at the Evenflo Gold Shyft . It’s also a multi-mode seat that features SensorSafe technology (an app paired with a special car seat buckle that alerts you if your child is unbuckled, overheats or is left behind in the car) as well as upgraded fabrics, trim and wheels.

“I like the flexibility—it can easily change from holding the car seat to a bassinet to a “big kid” seat.” -Marie

Travel System with Easiest Install

Britax Willow Brook Travel System - Onyx Glacier - $449.99.

Britax Willow Brook Travel System - Onyx Glacier

  • Infant car seat is quick and easy to install
  • Four ways to stroll
  • One-step fold

Parents and car seat experts rave about ClickTight, Britax’s installation technology, calling it “ a remarkably simple and effective way to install a car seat .” But it’s never been available in an infant seat—until now. The Willow infant car seat included in this well-priced travel system features this installation system that makes getting a safe, secure install quick and easy. The seat also features three adjustment points (hips, shoulders and between the legs) for a custom fit and naturally flame-retardant fabrics (which are also washer and dryer safe). The stroller is on the lighter side and has a modular seat, a one-step fold and a large storage basket.

The stroller’s wheels are plastic and the suspension system isn’t the best, leading some parents to complain about a bumpy ride when on uneven terrain.

“We are on our 4th child so we have tried several other strollers and car seats before. I have to say that this set is top-notch. The stroller is fairly light and glides very smoothly with easy turns. The seat can lift up and turn around so baby can face frontward to see ahead or rearward to see us. The cupholder for the “pusher” is a nice touch. Car seat and base are also great but the cool thing about the ca seat is that it also clicks into the stroller until baby is big enough for the toddler seat. No complaints.” -bmshaw

Best Car Seat Travel System

Nuna MIXX Next with Mag Buckle and PIPA Rx Travel System - Caviar - $1,150.00.

Nuna MIXX Next with Mag Buckle and PIPA Rx Travel System - Caviar

  • Includes ultra-light, ultra-safe parent favorite car seat
  • Luxury features
  • Stroller has great maneuverability and suspension

This travel system is (much) more than just its good looks—it’s also super functional. It combines the Nuna Mixx Next stroller, loved for its smooth ride (oversized tires + all-wheel suspension = one high-performing combo), generous storage basket, magnetic seat buckle and compact fold with the Pipa Rx Infant Car Seat, one of the lightest, safest and most popular infant seats on the market. (It also includes the Relx Base, Nuna’s anti-rebound base that features a fold-down stability leg to absorb collision forces and four latch positions for a better fit against your vehicle’s seat.)

The stroller fully reclines and boasts excellent maneuverability and the car seat is a breeze to snap in and out at only a little over seven pounds. This travel system is pricey, but well worth it if you’re looking for a luxury car seat + stroller combo that combines safety, durability and performance features.

This is a really pricey travel system, especially considering the stroller doesn’t convert to hold more than one child. Although the car seat is super light, the Mixx stroller is on the heavier side. The car seat’s seat pad is machine washable but the rest is spot-clean only.

Most Versatile Travel System

Graco Modes Nest Travel System - Sullivan - $399.99.

Graco Modes Nest Travel System - Sullivan

  • Three different modes
  • One-hand, self-standing fold

This travel system combines one of Graco’s most popular strollers, the Modes Nest, with their popular SnugRide 35 Lite Elite infant car seat, and the result is one pretty awesome travel system. The standout feature of the Modes Nest stroller is optionality. It’s three strollers in one, working as an infant car seat carrier (you can click the car seat directly onto the stroller frame), a bassinet (pram) and a toddler stroller with the ability to flip the seat parent- or forward-facing. Especially considering the price, this is a pretty impressive (and convenient) feature. Parents also love the snack tray and parent cup holder, large canopy and removable newborn head and body support. The car seat, the SnugRide 35 Lite Elite, weighs under 10 pounds and is easy to install. It works up to 35 pounds and has a four-position recline.

The stroller wheels are plastic, so it’s not ideal for rougher terrain or traversing over curbs.

Looking for a similar stroller but need it to work for a growing family? Check out the Graco Modes Nest2Grow Travel System . It expands to a double stroller and has over 15 configurations.

“We love this travel system for our daughter! The car seat is light, which I definitely appreciated after my C-section as I was not supposed to carry a lot of weight. The stroller is also lightweight and has great features! We were drawn to this stroller for the bassinet feature. We put our daughter down for walks and she naps peacefully while getting some fresh air. The stroller is also easy to fold and unfold. I feel like I could do it with one hand if I tried, which is great for any mom who already has their hands full with their little one!” -JCains

Best Travel System for a Growing Family

UPPAbaby MESA V2 Infant Car Seat & VISTA V2 Stroller Travel System - Mesa V2 Greyson/Vista V2 Greyson - $1,359.98.

UPPAbaby MESA V2 Infant Car Seat & VISTA V2 Stroller Travel System - Mesa V2 Greyson/Vista V2 Greyson

  • Grows with your family
  • Tons of configurations

When this travel system hits the sidewalks, other strollers give it the jealous side-eye. The Vista grows right along with your family. It can accommodate two infant car seats, two bassinets and countless other combinations. It has an amazing amount of high-end features and is a true delight to push—it easily steers with one hand, turns on a dime and can effortlessly take on rougher surfaces like cracked sidewalks and gravel. The Mesa infant car seat is reversible (parent-facing or front-facing) as are the toddler seats, and there’s shade galore with an enormous SPF 50 canopy, a huge storage basket, a telescoping handlebar and a red-to-green light indicator on the car seat base so you know when it’s been properly secured.

The Vista V2 travel system is expensive. It’s a large, bulky stroller and isn’t the easiest to break down. It can also be tough to push when it’s fully loaded with two kiddos. Unlike the Evenflo travel system above, the stroller component of this system is what shines rather than the car seat. While it’s not the hardest to install, it’s not always the easiest (always read your manual!) and the fit isn’t always the best for smaller babies.

“The flexibility!!! It was wonderful with one child and a lifesaver now that we have two under two. It has incredible storage capacity, many configuration options and so easy to use!!!” -Nicole

Best Jogging Travel System

Baby trend expedition race tec jogger travel system - ultra grey.

  • Super affordable jogging stroller
  • XL wheels for any terrain
  • Oversized storage basket

Jogging strollers aren’t known for being affordable, so it’s surprising that a travel system with a car seat and a jogger that handles as well as this one does could cost so little. The Expedition boasts the ability to make quick, sharp turns and has bicycle wheels to coast over gravel, grass, uneven pavement and other types of rough terrain. (The front wheel also locks for jogging.) It also features a jumbo storage basket, a removable XL canopy to block out the elements and an effortless fold that engages by pulling the triggers beside the handlebar.

You can’t jog with the stroller until your little one can sit up and has strong head and neck control, usually around eight months old. It’s also on the shorter side for a jogger, so a taller toddler may not fit in it for very long, meaning you won’t get as much use out of it as some of the larger (and more expensive) jogging strollers like BOB or Thule. The car seat can be tough to install.

“I am tall so this stroller was great for my height. The price was right and the car seat was very lightweight. It did not take up a lot of space in my small car and was easy to attach to the stroller. I love how smooth the jogging stroller was to push.” -Ashley

Easiest to Fold Travel System

Baby jogger city mini gt2 all-terrain travel system - opulent black.

  • Includes bestselling stroller
  • Quick and easy one-handed fold
  • Great for urban and suburban families

The Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 stroller is a parent favorite and a Babylist bestseller thanks to its agility and its unparalleled one-handed fold. Combine that with a versatile, ultrasafe car seat and you get a travel system that’s tough to top. The GT2’s slim profile and ability to quickly turn corners makes it perfect for crowded city streets as well as suburban sidewalks. With one hand you can quickly whip it closed and carry it up stairs or onto a commuter train no problem—it’s lighter than most full-size strollers. And because of its tight fold, it fits in smaller trunks.

The compatible City GO 2 car seat is just as great. You can safely secure it in a vehicle with or without a base (perfect for taxis or ride shares) and it pops right into the stroller.

The storage basket on the stroller is small and tough to reach, and the infant car seat is on the heavier side.

“My baby loves this stroller the most and we take it everywhere. Love the light weight, easy to fold feature and comfort.” -Lee

Best Lightweight Travel System

Nuna pipa urbn & trvl travel system - caviar.

  • Baseless infant car seat
  • Lightweight travel stroller + 7-pound car seat
  • Perfect for travel

If you plan on traveling frequently while your baby is an infant, or simply prefer a more lightweight stroller for everyday use, this is the travel system for you. It’s pricey, but it’s an extremely high-quality, safe and innovative stroller + car seat combo that is truly one of a kind.

This travel system from Nuna combines the brand’s TRVL stroller with the urbn, a baseless car seat. What’s so special about a baseless car seat? Most infant car seats can be installed without a base, but require a seat belt—along with time and patience. That’s not the case here. There’s no base to worry about AND the latch system is built right into the seat’s base. Simply press a button on each side to attach the seat directly to your vehicle’s lower anchors. It’s about as foolproof as it gets, and especially ideal if you’ll be using your car seat on the go in rideshares or taxis. It’s also an extremely safe way to secure a car seat to a vehicle.

Standout features of the TRVL stroller include a quick, one-handed fold, a compact size (it stands on its own and weighs just over 13 pounds) and an easy-access storage basket.

This travel system is expensive. The stroller doesn’t have a carry strap and doesn’t have many of the perks you’ll find on a full-size stroller. The urbn car seat has a lower height and weight limit than most infant car seats.

Best More Affordable Lightweight Travel System

Graco fastaction fold sport click connect travel system - gotham.

  • One-second, one-hand fold
  • Modular seat
  • Includes lightweight car seat

The second Graco travel system on our list, this one stands out as a much more affordable lightweight travel system that’s known for its one-handed, one-second fold. The FastAction system is a great choice if you’re looking for a safe, popular car seat and a stroller that’s easy to navigate. The stroller features a multi-position reclining seat, a large storage basket underneath and lots of extras like child and parent trays and cup holders. Another feature to love? The SnugRide 35 Lite infant car seat weighs less than eight pounds an is a parent favorite.

If you prefer a four-wheel stroller (and a modular seat) instead of a three-wheel configuration, Graco’s FastAction SE Travel System is a good option to consider.

“My husband and I bought this travel system for our grandson. It is so easy to use, and we can take it anywhere. The stroller is lightweight, and opens/closes with little effort. The front wheels make it simple to maneuver through doorways, around obstructions, and even rides like a breeze through grass and rocky terrain. I would recommend this system for anyone, but, it is especially convenient for people who may have difficulty with heavy, or more complex systems. Best of all - our grandson loves it!” -grandma2

  • We analyzed results from Babylist’s Best Baby Products survey, which polled 6,000 Babylist users and asked them to share the baby products they love the most and why.
  • We interviewed pediatrician Dr. Kelly Fradin and researched information on car seat safety and reviews from car seat safety experts and from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
  • We utilized insight from the Babylist editorial team, including Gear Editor Jen LaBracio, an expert in the baby space for over six years and a mom of two who has written hundreds of baby gear guides and personally researched and tested hundreds of baby products, including many travel systems.
  • We reviewed customer reviews from hundreds of real Babylist parents.

A travel system is a car seat and a stroller that attach to each other. Just unclip the car seat from its base in the back seat, snap it into the stroller and you’re off.

A travel system, sometimes also referred to as a stroller travel system or baby travel system, can be purchased in two ways:

  • As a package deal from the same brand (the type of travel systems we’re reviewing here), or
  • As a “make your own” set that combines a stroller and a car seat from different brands using adapters.

Package deals tend to be more economical than the DIY version and are guaranteed to work together—no adapters required. If you’re eyeing up a stroller and a car seat from different brands, however, don’t stress. Just keep in mind that not all brands work together and you’ll often need to buy separate adapters. Check out Babylist’s Infant Car Seat and Stroller Compatibility guide to learn more.

Unless your stroller comes with a bassinet attachment or fully reclines and is approved for newborn use, it’s not suitable for your little one until they can sit up unassisted—which usually happens around six months of age. And even if that is the case, you’ll still need to move your infant every time you want to transfer them from the car seat to the stroller (and back again).

Here’s where a travel system comes in. A travel system solves for strolling with your newborn before they’re able to sit up independently. It also means you won’t have to disturb your little one every time you need to make the switch between your car seat and your stroller.

When Do You Need a Travel System?

You’ll need a travel system right at birth if you plan on using your car to transport your little one. Most parents choose to research travel systems prior to baby’s arrival and have one ready to go before birth so they’re prepared.

Around six to nine months, your baby will be sitting up and will likely want a better view of the world—and then you can use the full-size stroller on its own. And because you can use the stroller from infancy through toddlerhood, it’s the only stroller you’ll need to purchase.

Yes, travel systems are safe for newborns. There are a few guidelines you’ll want to keep in mind, though.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against the use of car seats for sleep outside of a car. If your infant falls asleep in their car seat, they should be removed and placed in a crib or bassinet (or other safe sleep space) as soon as possible.

But what if your baby falls asleep in their car seat while you’re driving and is still asleep when you arrive at your destination? According to pediatrician Dr. Kelly Fradin , the best practice is to remove them and transfer them to a safe sleep environment.

“However, many parents, myself included, will want the child to finish their nap for a brief period. If you choose to do this to reduce risk be sure the baby is not overheating by removing hats, blankets and ventilating the car. Also, keep the straps snug and place the car seat on the floor under your direct supervision.”

“If babies are in an approved stroller with the car seat properly restrained, I think of it the same as being in a vehicle,” explains Dr. Fradin. “Keep them cool and supervised.”

Since a travel system includes two products—a car seat and a stroller—you’ll want to think through how you’ll use each piece of gear, both together and separately.

You’ll be using your stroller longer than your infant car seat, so that’s a good place to start. Think about the travel system stroller’s:

  • Size and weight
  • What type of terrain it can handle
  • Ease of use (how it opens and closes, if it’s washable, etc.)
  • Features and accessories (adjustable handlebar, canopy, etc.)

When selecting a car seat, it’s comforting to know that regardless of price, all car seats sold in the US must adhere to the same federal safety regulations. Other features to consider include:

  • The seat’s age, height and weight minimums and maximums
  • Features like washability, harness adjustment and side-impact protection
  • How the seat will fit in your car

Factors to Consider When Choosing Travel Systems for Twins

When choosing travel systems for twins, you should consider safety features that cater to two children. Look for twin-friendly configurations that accommodate both infants comfortably. Assess the comfort and durability of the system for long-term use.

Additionally, think about maneuverability and storage options to suit your lifestyle. Compare prices to find a system that matches your budget and needs.

Safety Features for Twins

When selecting travel systems for your twins, prioritize safety features such as 5-point harnesses and side-impact protection to ensure their security during travel. Look for systems with individual harnesses to secure each child properly and side-impact protection to safeguard both twins in case of a collision.

Opt for adjustable canopies to shield your little ones from sun exposure and harsh weather conditions. Choose travel systems with durable construction to provide a secure environment for your twins while on the go.

Verify that the system meets or exceeds safety standards established by regulatory bodies to guarantee the highest level of protection for your precious twins. Prioritizing these safety features will give you peace of mind during your travels with your twins.

Twin-Friendly Configurations

What seating configurations should you prioritize when selecting travel systems for your twins?

When choosing a travel system for twins, it’s essential to look for options that offer multiple seating configurations to accommodate different needs. Consider strollers that provide choices like tandem, side-by-side, or stand-and-ride positions, as this versatility can be incredibly convenient.

Adaptable features that are easy to adjust are also crucial, allowing you to meet your twins’ changing requirements as they grow. Opting for a twin travel system with twin-friendly configurations not only enhances comfort and safety for your children but also provides you with the flexibility and convenience you need while on the go.

Comfort and Durability

Ensure your twins’ comfort and durability by prioritizing plush, padded seats and sturdy materials when selecting a travel system. Look for adjustable features like footrests and seat recline options to enhance comfort for both infants and toddlers. Opt for materials such as sturdy metal frames and quality fabrics to ensure the travel system can withstand the wear and tear of frequent use.

Safety features like a 5-point harness are crucial for securing your children during travel. Consider the weight capacity and size limitations to guarantee that the travel system can comfortably accommodate your twins. By focusing on comfort and durability, you can make traveling with twins a more enjoyable and stress-free experience.

Maneuverability and Storage

To ensure smooth navigation in crowded spaces and convenience in carrying essentials, prioritize maneuverability and storage features when selecting a travel system for your twins.

Look for a double stroller with easy maneuverability to navigate tight spots effortlessly. Opt for a travel system that offers ample storage options such as large baskets or parent consoles to hold all the essentials for your children.

Ensure the stroller has adjustable handlebars or grips for comfortable pushing and steering. Evaluate the folding mechanism to ensure it fits easily into your vehicle’s trunk.

Choose a stroller with lockable wheels and suspension for smoother rides on various terrains, providing better control and stability when traveling with your twins.

Price Matching Considerations

Consider comparing prices from different retailers when selecting travel systems for twins to ensure you get the best deal. Price matching allows you to report lower prices from online or offline stores for competitive pricing. Make sure to provide specific details such as the website, price, and date of the lower price found to help companies consider matching it.

This process not only ensures that you can get the best value for your money but also encourages competitive pricing in the market. Be aware of the procedure for reporting lower prices to take advantage of price matching opportunities.

User-Friendly Designs

When selecting travel systems for twins, prioritize user-friendly designs that cater to the convenience and ease of operation for parents.

Look for systems that offer easy-to-operate features, such as simple folding mechanisms and smooth maneuverability. Consider travel systems with multiple seating configurations to adapt to various needs and preferences. Opt for adjustable components like canopies, handlebars, and footrests for personalized comfort. Safety features like 5-point harnesses and impact-absorbing materials are crucial in ensuring your twins’ security.

Seek out travel systems with convenient storage options, parent trays, and cup holders to enhance functionality during your outings. Prioritizing user-friendly designs will make traveling with twins a much smoother and more enjoyable experience.

Warranty and Support

Ensure you thoroughly assess the warranty coverage and support services provided before selecting travel systems for your twins to secure post-purchase satisfaction and peace of mind.

Warranty coverage can vary in terms and duration, with some options offering extended protection for an additional fee.

Support services, such as product assembly assistance, troubleshooting help, and access to replacement parts, are essential for a smooth experience.

The 13 Best Car Seat and Stroller Travel Systems of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation. Learn more .

Verywell Family / Dera Burreson

Infant car seat and stroller combos (often called travel systems) make toting your baby around safer and more convenient. The best travel systems come with an infant car seat that either converts into a stroller or clicks right into one, allowing you to transition your baby from the car to the stroller without having to wake or unstrap them. When shopping for the right one for your family, consider the travel system’s safety features, weight and height limitations, stroller configuration options (especially if you have multiple kiddos), and overall ease of use.

We’re big fans of travel systems because they help new parents rest easy knowing that the car seat and stroller are designed to work well together, and they’re convenient if you know you’ll be on the go with your baby often. We consulted with car seat experts as well as stroller and car seat safety guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to determine what makes a high-quality travel system. A board-certified pediatrician on our Review Board also reviewed this article for medical accuracy and integrity regarding car seat and stroller travel systems, safety features, and height and weight limitations.

We used this information to select 25 travel systems to put through rigorous testing at the Verywell Testing Lab in Des Moines, Iowa, assessing the ease of assembly, installation, and use, as well as their portability, design, maneuverability, and overall value. Then, we sent our top picks out to our editors, who have been testing them with their families for the past three months. This real-world test is ongoing, so we’ll be sure to keep this list updated with additional insights as we learn more about the travel systems’ long-term performance. Stroller and car seat combos from brands like Doona, Uppababy, Nuna, and Graco are just a few of the standouts.

Attaching each part is simple

Intuitive assembly

Deluxe design

Car seat and stroller sold separately

Car seat canopy isn’t the most secure

Uppababy is known for its deluxe, user-friendly baby gear, and its Cruz travel system is no exception. Currently, the Uppababy Cruz V2 and Mesa V2 Infant Car Seat & Base are sold separately, but they function as a dynamic travel system that is easy to assemble and install in the car. (In fact, we found that assembly was so intuitive it wasn’t necessary to read the directions.) Since adapters are pre-installed, you simply need to pop on the wheels, detach the car seat from the base, and attach it to the sturdy stroller frame.

Our test revealed that attaching and detaching the Mesa V2 car seat and Cruz V2 stroller is as easy as pushing a button. Plus, attaching the car seat to the base was a breeze, clicking right into place, and an indicator turns green when the level is correctly adjusted. (We appreciated the clear directions for this step.) Installing the base with the LATCH system wasn’t difficult, either—once we figured out how to get the latches to release from each side, it was simple to clip them in. You can also choose to install the car seat without the base by threading a seat belt through the slots.

We were impressed by the travel system’s thoughtful design and ample padding. The Cruz V2’s spacious cargo area holds a medium-sized diaper bag, and you can also access the cargo from the front of the stroller if desired. However, there’s a bar along the bottom of the back cargo space that can make it awkward to wiggle items in and out. The stroller has the same beautiful, modern look and ergonomic leather handle as other Uppababy strollers, and we liked the car seat’s handle, which can be repositioned to be an anti-rebound bar while driving. We did struggle to keep the Mesa V2’s canopy on securely, though we appreciated that the travel system comes with a rain canopy and a mesh canopy. Folding the stroller had a bit of a learning curve at first, but it wasn’t difficult.

Even with the car seat attached, this travel system felt super lightweight, and it glided smoothly across the various surfaces we tested, like turf and gravel. It was easy and enjoyable to push, and although its large wheels made pulling it up stairs tricky, it was lightweight enough to carry up the stairs if needed.

While it does have a higher price point, the Uppababy Cruz V2 and Mesa V2 provide long-term value and can grow with your child, since the stroller has a reversible toddler seat. The travel system as a whole has a top-tier design, and the parts are simple to attach, detach, and install, making it a clear choice for our top spot.

Best Maneuverability

Nuna mixx next + pipa lite rx.

Pottery Barn Kids

  • Assembly 4.5 /5
  • Maneuverability 5 /5
  • Installation 3.5 /5

Great maneuverability

Car seat easily attaches to the stroller

Ergonomic finger grooves for folding

Installing the car seat and base in the car is tricky

The Nuna Mixx Next + Pipa Lite RX Travel System drives like a dream and has an impressive sleek and modern design. The travel system includes the brand’s Pipa Lite RX infant car seat, PIPA series base, and Mixx Next stroller, which is pretty simple to assemble, though some fiddling around was required during our test as several parts were nicely hidden by fabric to enhance the stroller’s overall look.

This car seat/stroller combo particularly wowed us with its maneuverability. Thanks to its suspension, the stroller drove smoothly across several surfaces in our obstacle course and the rubber wheels provided great traction. Even with a fully loaded diaper bag, the travel system was lightweight enough to make turning super easy, but it still felt stable on different surfaces. Plus, the stroller stayed completely still when the brake was engaged.

Attaching the car seat to the stroller was simple, with accessible buttons and levers and a clicking noise when the seat was securely fastened. It was also straightforward to attach the car seat to the base since there’s an indicator that turns green when you’ve attached the clips and set the floor support correctly. Getting the base installed in the car, on the other hand, took some effort. We found that the base clips are best installed one at a time while bracing yourself against the base, which isn’t ideal. Adjusting the base’s height also required a good bit of wiggling.

This Nuna travel system impressed us when it came to its sleek design. In addition to its appealing look, all of the materials felt high-end and thought out in terms of placement. The car seat’s interior was soft and cozy, and the stroller’s canopy had a handy magnetic peekaboo flap. Though the cargo space is narrower than we’d like, it is tall. Finger grooves on the top and bottom of the stroller assist with folding.

At $1,300, this travel system is certainly an investment, and we wish that extras like a snack tray, rain cover, and car seat case were included. However, if you have room in your budget, this stylish travel system is so easy to steer and looks great.

If you’re looking to save on space, the Doona Infant Car Seat is a single piece of gear that pulls double duty as a car seat and a stroller. We recommend it for those who live in a city, particularly if you get in and out of cabs or ride shares frequently. To convert the Doona from a stroller into a car seat, engage the brake, push the handlebar up and back, press a button on the top pack of the car seat, then push the frame of the stroller down (with your foot in front of the back wheel) until the wheels tuck into it. It sounds more complicated than it is—it took us just under a minute to do the conversion after we figured it out.

Taking the Doona in and out of the car was more pleasant to do than most other travel systems we tested. When folded, it clicks right into the car seat base, and an indicator on the base turns from red to green when it’s in correctly. To remove it, press a button on the base, push a large piece on the base inward, and pull the Doona towards you. Then comes the best part: You don’t have to grab a stroller out of the trunk. Simply press the button at the top pack of the seat, the wheels swing out, and boom: It's a stroller again.

The LATCH system itself is easy to install with handy clips and release buttons, and a dial helps you raise the seat until it’s at the right height. You also have the option to secure the base by fitting the car’s seat belt into the green clips. Even with a 20-pound weight inside, we were able to lift it up to carry up the stairs, which would come in handy for city parents living in a walk-up apartment or traveling by subway. We were also able to pull it backwards up the stairs. It was smooth to push around (even one-handed), and there are two clearly marked pedals to engage and disengage the brake.

The fabric on the seat and canopy felt nice to the touch, though the canopy didn’t extend too far. (You can purchase sunshades , mosquito nets , and rain covers separately.) The seat, which is padded for impact protection, is covered with a cooling bamboo charcoal fabric that can be removed and washed to clean up messes. When folded, the stroller handle acts as an anti-rebound bar, which is a clever (and helpful) touch. The handlebar’s height can’t be adjusted, though, so it may not be an ergonomic fit for taller adults.

While this is a niche purchase, it’s a unique and highly convenient option for someone who doesn’t want to deal with several pieces of equipment or those who travel around a city often and frequently take cabs and ride shares.

Roomy cargo space

Attaching the car seat to the base can be done with one hand

Handlebar isn’t adjustable

A well-designed travel system, the Chicco Corso LE Modular Travel System has deluxe features and is easy to use. Right away, we were impressed by the tool-free assembly and thorough instruction manual, though clicking the stroller pieces together required some elbow grease. Removing the stroller’s arm bar and replacing it with the car seat adapter was a cinch, and so was sliding the car seat onto the stroller. We were able to lift the car seat into the base with just one hand (it clicked right into place), but to detach it, we needed two hands: one to press a button, and the other to lift out the seat.

The best travel systems give you the option to install the car seat into the base with a LATCH system or the car’s seat belt. This Chicco travel system has both: If you’re using the LATCH system, the base has handy clips that you slide over some hooks in the seat, then a liquid level shows you if the seat is level. To install the car seat without a base, simply use the car’s lap belt and chest belt for added security.

Above all else, this travel system stands out in the design category. The stroller’s roomy cargo space has separate compartments to hold all of your baby gear, including a diaper bag and bottles, and the clip-on cup holder was a plus. We also liked the canopy, which zips to extend or retract, and you can flip up a flap for extra airflow. The stroller is compact when folded and doesn’t take up all of the room in a trunk, and all of the parts connect and lock into place intuitively. Our only complaints about this travel system’s design are that the stroller’s bumper bar needs to be removed to attach the car seat, and the shoulder strap has to be repositioned each time you buckle your little one in. Also, the handlebar’s height is not adjustable, like the one on the Graco Modes Nest2Grow Travel System .

During our test, this stroller turned beautifully around tight corners, but we struggled to get it over the curb. Though taking the stairs caused quite a bit of noise, we think the ride would be fairly smooth for a baby. Overall, the Chicco Corso LE Modular Travel System scored highly in each category, and at $600, it’s about half the price of some other top models, like the Nuna Mixx Next + Pipa Lite RX Travel System , which retails for $1,300.

Several configuration and conversion options

Large and easily accessible cargo space

Snack tray and parent cup holder included

Not a portable option

The Graco Modes Nest2Grow Travel System is a great purchase if you’ve got multiple little ones or are planning to expand your family. The travel system alone can be a single toddler stroller, a single infant stroller, or a double stroller for a toddler and infant with the included infant car seat. And, with the purchase of a second stroller seat , it converts into a double stroller with over 15 possible configurations.

During our test, we found the assembly to be fairly straightforward, with our only frustration being that the car seat didn’t stay in place at the lowest car seat height. Detaching the infant car seat simply required the push of a button, but attaching it was a bit trickier—we had to carefully guide the seat into the correct position. Attaching the car seat to the base, on the other hand, was super smooth: The car seat snapped right in and out. There's a very clear level indicator, so you know exactly when the car seat is positioned correctly.

Installing the car seat base into the car with the LATCH system was a breeze. After snapping in the connectors, we simply tightened the straps and checked the indicator to make sure it was level. Once in, it was super secure; so secure, in fact, that detaching the base was a tough task, requiring us to totally unhook the LATCH connectors. If you plan to be moving from car to car frequently, this might not be your best option.

The stroller is heavy and built like a tank, which poses some challenges. While it’s simple to fold, it has a large footprint (even when folded) and requires a good bit of effort to turn when it’s fully loaded. At the same time, the stroller’s heft makes it feel incredibly sturdy and secure. There are many design features that we appreciated, including a very roomy cargo space that still had ample room after we loaded it up with a full diaper bag. It also had faux leather detailing on the handlebar, which adjusts to two different positions, making it great for caregivers of different heights. The footbrake was easy to engage and release, and the travel system came with a removable cup holder for the adult and a removable snack tray for the kid.

This travel system is at a lower price point than many of our other picks, so it’s reasonable that there are some quirks. If portability isn’t a priority, this travel system gives you a lot for your money with the many conversions to choose from.

Can detach car seat from wheels

Padding is removable and washable

Maneuvering the car seat into the base is finicky

Must be fully installed in the base to detach carrier from wheels

When you welcome a new baby, you likely have a lot of gear to put together. The Evenflo Shyft DualRide comes assembled and ready to go—just unlatch it and pop it open—so you have one less thing to build for your baby. Similar to the Doona, the Evenflo Shyft DualRide is an all-in-one travel system that converts from a stroller to an infant car seat.

The Shyft’s seat is higher off the ground than the Doona, which is a plus because it helps the carrier stay cleaner. On the other hand, it’s also much heavier than the Doona—the Shyft weighs nearly 13 pounds more—and trickier to maneuver into the car due to its bulkiness. (It would be a better fit for an SUV rather than our editor’s sedan.) Once you’ve hoisted it into the car, though, the Shyft clicks right into the car seat base, which can be installed via the LATCH system or the car’s seat belt. A level indicator and a loud click tell you when the seat is correctly attached to the base. To remove the carrier, all you need to do is pull a white lever on the back, and the car seat is released right away.

Unlike the Doona, you can remove the Shyft’s wheels from the carrier if desired, but oddly, you can only detach the carrier from the wheels when the system is installed in the car seat base—so, if you’re away from your car and want to remove the wheels, you can’t. However, when the wheels are docked, it’s easy to remove the car seat: Simply pull on a lever and shift the carrier forward, and it pops right out.

The Shyft has no storage area, which is not ideal for parents needing to tote around baby gear. It does come with a detachable cup holder and a storage bag, though. Its handlebar is tall enough that caregivers can push it without hunching over—the Doona’s handlebar may be a little short for adults parents to reach comfortably—and the UPF 50+ canopy is nice and thick without feeling constrictive. The stroller is a “cakewalk” to maneuver, our editors found, and it wheeled through our obstacle course with ease. It was a little tricky to take over sand, but it’s great on turf and pavement. The straps on the no-rethread harness, however, are a total pain to adjust.

One unique design feature of the Shyft is Evenflo’s SensorSafe technology app, which alerts you (via a compatible app) if your child unexpectedly becomes unbuckled, has been in their seat too long, or is left unattended. It also tells you if the car’s temperature is too hot or cold.

Priced at $550, the Evenflo Shyft DualRide costs the same as the Doona, so it’s a matter of assessing each option’s features to determine which is the better fit for your family. Both travel systems steer nicely and cut down on the pieces of gear you have to deal with. But if the ability to detach the carrier from the wheels is important to you, only the Shyft is able to do so. And if a lightweight option is more of a priority, the Doona weighs 13 pounds less and is less bulky, making it a little easier to maneuver in and out of the car.

Quick assembly

Magnetic peekaboo window

No cup holder or snack tray

Struggling to install a car seat base into your car can be time-consuming (and potentially dangerous), so we love how this one from Britax is quick and simple to install. Beginning with the assembly, this travel system proved itself in our tests: All we had to do was pop in the wheels, canopy, and car seat adapter.

During our test, we were able to attach the car seat to the stroller and car seat base with just one hand, and detaching was similarly easy, though we required a second hand to depress a lever. Where the travel system really shone was the installation, which took us under two minutes. The base quickly clicked into place thanks to the LATCH system, then we tightened it by pulling on the middle straps. Once installed, the base felt wonderfully sturdy and stable in the car.

Folding the stroller wasn’t intuitive at first, but it was simple once we figured it out, and the loop you pull to collapse serves as a handle when it’s folded. While we liked that the toddler seat reclines, adjusting it was tricky: We needed to push the slider and the straps at the same time, which took some effort. A mid-size diaper bag was a snug fit in the cargo space, though there was room for additional smaller items in the carrying bag attached to the handlebar. The canopy, which attaches to the base with a hook and loop closure, is adjustable and has a mesh peekaboo window that can be held back with the magnetic closure for viewing.

Unlike most of our other picks, this stroller only has one front wheel, which helped us navigate curbs with ease. The stroller did struggle a bit going over sticks and was heavy to turn, though it turned smoothly overall. It’s $650, which is pricier than some of our other picks, like the Graco Modes Pramette Travel System and Baby Trend Expedition Jogger Travel System (both under $350), but we think this one’s simple installation makes it worth it.

Best Car Seat

Chicco bravo trio travel system.

Intuitive car seat base installation

Quick, straightforward assembly

Fold isn’t very compact

The car seat is the heart of a travel system, so a good one is a must-have. This Chicco travel system features an infant car seat that attaches to the stroller and car seat base with ease, and in our tests, we appreciated just how intuitive using each part was.

We snapped all components together in just over five minutes, and it was also quick to attach the car seat to the stroller: After reclining the toddler seat, we clicked in the car seat to attach, then pulled on a lever to take the seat back out. The same goes for attaching the car seat to the base, but you pull on a handle to detach it. A bubble indicator helps you find the right car seat placement.

Similarly, installing the car seat base was a breeze. Since clicking in the latches and pulling the strap to secure the seat was so straightforward, we didn’t even need to refer to the instructions. Plus, the stroller folds quickly with the push of a button and a lift of the handle, which doubles as a carrying handle once it’s collapsed, making it easy to put it into the trunk or storage. It is a bit bulky when folded, though you can remove the snack tray to make it fit in smaller spaces.

This travel system’s aesthetic look is nothing special, but there are some thoughtful design features. The cushioning in the infant car seat and the toddler stroller seat is super soft, and there are conveniently located cup holders for the adult and kid. The cargo area fits a mid-sized diaper bag, though you do have to lift the seatback to access it. When we took the travel system out for a spin, it drove smoothly over most surfaces, but it did struggle to get up curbs and the left wheel felt a bit loose.

If you’re looking to make your life a little easier, consider this Chicco travel system for its simple installation and assembly.

Canopy has a mesh peekaboo window

Toddler seat turns into infant pramette

Car seat pops right into the stroller

Material on the toddler seat and infant car seat is rough

You’ll get a lot for your money with this 3-in-1 Graco travel system, which functions as an infant car seat carrier, a bassinet, and a toddler stroller (with a few adjustments, the toddler seat converts into a bassinet for younger babies).

In addition to being very versatile, this travel system also proved to be quite simple to use. It was simple to attach the infant car seat to the stroller once we located the slots, and all we had to do to detach it was push a button on the handlebar, which was doable with just one hand. The car seat also clicked into the base easily—to detach, you’ll need to reach up under the canopy to find the release button. Whether you’re a travel systems expert or a new parent, the instructions clearly illustrate how to install the car seat base via the LATCH system (a little force was required to tighten the belt) or the car’s seat belt.

The travel system’s design is user-friendly with a one-step fold, a reclining toddler seat, and a roomy cargo space that fit a diaper bag and a tote bag during our test. While the handlebar isn’t adjustable, it has a nice foam grip and an attached cup holder and phone holder. The adjustable canopy has a mesh peekaboo window for breathability and visibility. We thought the material on the toddler seat and infant car seat was a bit rough, but the car seat does have a padded backrest. If you prefer softer material, we recommend the Chicco Bravo Trio Travel System .

Even when fully loaded, this travel system maneuvered over curbs and around corners like a dream, and it glided smoothly over various terrains in our obstacle course. For a high-quality, multi-function travel system that looks pricier than it is, we think $330 is a great value.

Easy to attach the car seat to the stroller

Compact fold

Toddler seat can face adult

Not a lot of bells and whistles for the price

The Baby Jogger City Sights Travel System gets its name for a reason: After your little one graduates from an infant car seat to the toddler stroller seat, they can face forwards or backward to take in all of the sights. We found the travel system to be quite user-friendly: The car seat clicked right into the base and could be detached in one step, and after we located the compartment with the LATCH system clips, installing the base into the car was simple. A bubble indicator shows you when the parts are aligned. To attach the car seat to the stroller, we took out the toddler seat, slid on the two adapter pieces, then clicked on the car seat. (It can be removed with the press of a button behind the headrest.)

We did need to watch a tutorial to figure out how to fold the stroller, but once we did, it was easy. The stroller is ultra-compact when folded, measuring just under a foot tall, so you can toss it into your trunk alongside other gear. In addition to a sleek appearance, this travel system has a vegan leather handlebar and bumper bar, an adjustable canopy, and there is plenty of padding on the seats.

The stroller performed well on most terrains—it was a little bumpy over sticks—and turned nicely. We felt confident pushing it thanks to how smoothly it glides. Though this Baby Jogger travel system doesn’t come with a ton of bells and whistles (cup holders and a snack tray are sold separately), its compact folded footprint is great for those with small trunks or limited storage space, and we loved the way it drives. It’s pricier than other options on our list, but it is more affordable than the Uppababy and Nuna travel systems , which retail for over $1,000.

Best Storage

Graco modes nest travel system.

Several car seat position options

Components are easy to attach/install

Very large cargo area

Loaded stroller takes effort to push

Unfolding the stroller is tricky

The Graco Modes Nest Travel System has ample storage space, which is ideal if you’re packing up for a picnic in the park or need to carry many toys and playdate supplies. The massive cargo hold can fit two or three diaper bags or backpacks, which are easy to access, plus a kid’s snack tray and parent’s cup holder are included with the kit.

Although assembly wasn’t difficult, during our test we did find it necessary to read the instructions. Switching between configurations was pretty effortless, since the car seat snapped into the stroller frame with an audible click, and it clicked right into the car seat base, too. A level on the side indicated when the seat was placed correctly, and there’s also a handy visual guide to show the best placement. To remove it from the base, we pushed a lever at the bottom of the base and pulled the car seat up and out.

The car seat felt stable when secured with the LATCH base and the seat belt, so you have two great options. We needed to consult the manual to install the LATCH system into the car, but after that, it was straightforward to clip in. Our primary critique is that the stroller was difficult to unfold—we needed to unlock the closure latch with one hand and pull the frame up with the other, which is a bit tricky to do all at once.

The Graco Modes Nest Travel System’s overall design looked more upscale than it is. The stroller’s handlebar is wrapped in grippable faux leather, and the metal frame looks and feels solid. We particularly liked that the car seat can be placed at multiple heights when attached to the stroller, and it can also be positioned closer to or farther away from the adult who’s pushing it.

The stroller’s wheels turned well and it glided nicely over different surfaces, though we needed to exert some effort to push the fully loaded stroller. For the overall ease of use and roomy storage space, $430 is a great value for this stroller, which is available in several colorways.

Attaching the car seat to the stroller is tricky

For parents who are on a budget or don’t plan to use a travel system all too often, the Baby Trend Expedition Jogger Travel System is a great choice. Plus, it doubles as a jogging stroller with just one locking swivel wheel at the front. Its features are more basic than high-end options, but there’s still plenty to love about this affordable travel system.

The stroller comes mostly assembled, so we only needed to pop in the two back wheels and snap on the snack tray. The tray took some effort to attach, but it’s included with your purchase, which is a bonus. Attaching the car seat to the stroller was a bit trickier and it took several people to get it right, largely due to confusing directions and tabs that were hard to unlock. Uniquely, the car seat clicks in over the toddler tray, and though there’s a bungee cord on the side for security, this didn’t feel like the most stable option.

However, it was a breeze to install the car seat base with the LATCH system, which slid right into place and tightened easily, as well as with a seat belt. Then, the car seat clicked right into the base. We appreciated the simplicity of the car seat: The same button attached it to the stroller and the base, and the handle was positioned just right to help you navigate it into the car.

When it came to the stroller’s design, we found pluses and minuses. We liked its one-step, standing fold, and the two carrying handles for getting it in and out of the trunk. Other features just fell a bit flat, though. There are handy cup holders and a phone compartment, but both were a bit too small to hold a standard-sized water bottle and an iPhone 12, respectively. The rubber handle has a good grip, but we didn’t love the tire-like feeling. The canopy also didn’t adjust well—it kept coming all the way forward—and the seat material didn’t feel high-quality. However, the toddler seat can recline, which was a plus.

Even with just one front wheel, this stroller maneuvered well. We liked that you have the option to drive the stroller with the front wheel locked or unlocked, and it handled multiple terrains like a champ. It also turned pretty smoothly and had a spot to put your foot on to help you get it up a curb. While this Baby Trend car seat and stroller combo had some quirks, it proved itself when it came to value. Not only is it the most affordable option on our list, but it even gets you a jogging stroller and travel system all in one.

Seat belt securing mechanism for installation

Easy to assemble

Stroller feels heavy to push

The Britax Willow Brook car seat and stroller combo is an excellent option if reliability is your top priority. The travel system includes the Britax Willow car seat, the Aspen car seat base, and the Brook baby stroller.

During testing, the sturdiness of this stroller caught our attention right from the beginning. Assembly was a breeze and everything clicked tightly into place and didn’t move, even when shaken. The process was so intuitive that we didn’t even need to read the instruction manual! All components come partially assembled; the stroller wheels, which are clearly labeled front or back, are the only pieces that need to be attached—they pop right into place on the bottom of the stroller frame with no problems. The car and stroller seats seamlessly click into the stroller frame adapters and feel very secure. Both can also be used in front- or rear-facing mode.

Installing the car seat base in the car was just as seamless, thanks to clear instructions, useful indicators, and a few helpful features. For example, the base has recline indicators and is equipped with Britax ClickTight technology, which is a mechanism that locks the seat belt into place when installing the base. During testing, we found this three-step process of opening, threading the seat belt, and closing the mechanism really straightforward, and we liked that it takes the stress out of car seat installation using a seat belt. The base can also be installed via the LATCH system; you’ll find the connectors in the compartment labeled "lower connector storage." The lower connector strap should be secured using the ClickTight system and belt guides on the base and then secured to the vehicle’s lower anchors.

When it comes to design, we love the luxurious fabrics on the Willow car seat and the Brook stroller because they feel soft to the touch and are free of flame-retardant chemicals. The car seat also has an infant insert for extra padding (which is washer and dryer-friendly) and is appropriate for babies 4 pounds and up. You’ll find multiple adjustment points on the car seat (little slits where you can thread through the harness) at the shoulders, hip, and between the legs that can be pulled for a snug or looser fit as your baby grows to the weight limit of 30 pounds.

We also love that the Brook baby stroller comes with a parent cup holder that’s placed high (right on top of the handlebar), making your drink accessible without bending over. In addition, a snack tray fits onto the front of the stroller seat for your little one’s goodies while on the move.

The stroller is a little heavy to maneuver. We took it on walks and around an obstacle course, making three-point turns, pushing it around tight corners and on multiple surfaces, including uneven surfaces. While we found it quite easy to pivot, it was strenuous to push it in general. It felt even heavier on surfaces like grass and astroturf, where it moved pretty slowly. Although it was a bit of an effort to push, it turned without difficulty and never felt like it would tip over, demonstrating its sturdiness once again.

At $450, we think this travel system is a good value considering the impressive car seat features and the simplicity of assembly and installation, which reduces some of the stress of navigating a car seat. While the stroller is slightly more challenging to push around, we love the feeling of safety knowing our little one is in a secure and sturdy stroller.

Travel Systems We Also Tested

  • Evenflo Pivot Xpand Modular Travel System : While assembling the stroller is a dream, the travel system as a whole isn't easy to use. Getting the various parts into the proper alignment is challenging, and folding the stroller is not intuitive and requires a good bit of elbow grease.
  • Maxi-Cosi Gia XP 3-Wheel Single Travel System : This travel system doesn't have an intuitive design: Detaching the car seat from the stroller is quite difficult, even with both hands, and the car seat base requires a lot of force to move around. As such, we think the price isn’t justified.
  • Cybex Talos S Lux Stroller & Aton 2 Car Seat Travel System : Across the board, this travel system does not feel sturdy and is difficult to use, and the materials feel surprisingly low-quality for the price.
  • Baby Trend Muy Tango All-Terrain Pro Travel System : Assembling this stroller is straightforward, but after installing the car seat base with the LATCH system and attaching the car seat, the unit was concerningly shaky.
  • Safety 1st Smooth Ride Travel System : Though we like that you can attach the car seat to the stroller without removing the snack tray, this travel system falls short in the design category: The lap buckles are difficult to adjust, the cup holders are shallow and feel flimsy, and the canopy is smaller than most.
  • Peg Perego Vivace Stroller and Primo Viaggio 4-35 Lounge Car Seat : This stroller maneuvered exceptionally well and we loved how easy it was to assemble and how seamlessly the car seat attached to the stroller. However, removing the car seat was a different story—we struggled to get it off and it felt really heavy. We were also concerned by how unstable the base and car seat felt when installed using the seat belt.

How We Tested Car Seat and Stroller Travel Systems

We evaluated the best car seat and stroller combos in two stages: a controlled lab test and a long-term test in the real world. First, 11 testers evaluated 23 car seat and stroller travel systems at the Verywell Testing Lab in Des Moines, Iowa. We examined the strollers and car seats individually and then together as a travel system.

To begin, we assembled the strollers right out of the box, noting whether the assembly was intuitive or complex and if the directions were helpful or confusing. We then assessed each stroller’s design, looking carefully at the feel of the fabric, how intuitive the buckle was to use, and whether they had certain features, such as a footrest, cup holders, an adjustable canopy, a reclining seat, and a reclining handlebar. Next, we placed a diaper bag loaded with baby essentials (the diaper bags weighed between 20 and 30 pounds) into the cargo space and took the stroller for a brisk walk around an obstacle course, navigating it over multiple terrains, around sharp corners, and through narrow spaces, before executing a three-point turn.

Then, we assessed the car seats—each car seat was rear-facing with a weight limit of 30 or 35 pounds—by buckling in a sandbag “baby.” We picked up each car seat, taking note of simplicity, maneuverability, and whether it could be carried with one hand. Next, we attached the car seats to the strollers, noting how the attachments worked, if the car seat popped in easily (or one-handed), whether the sandbag stayed in place, and if the setup felt safe.

Once attached, we adjusted the stroller’s canopy and took note of its roominess and if it provided full coverage. We then repeated the same steps we followed with the stroller, executing a three-point turn and taking it through an obstacle course and over different terrains. Next, we took the travel system up and down stairs to test for stability and then detached the car seats. For the final steps, we used real cars to test the ease of car seat base installation. After installing the bases, we attached and detached the car seats, noting if the process was intuitive, if it would have woken up a baby, and how well the car seat locked into the base.

After our lab test, editors took our top picks home to continue testing them with their own families. They've been testing these travel systems for over three months now, and we'll continue to update this article as we learn more. Additionally, we consulted with Michelle Pratt , Certified Child Passenger Technician and founder of Safe in the Seat, on safety and what to expect from a high-quality travel system.

What to Look for in Car Seat and Stroller Travel Systems

Safety features.

When shopping for a travel system or car seat stroller combo , safety is a primary concern. All car seats on the market have to meet federal car seat standards so they’re safe when used correctly. However, “that ‘when used correctly’ part is the key,” says Pratt. She recommends looking for features that help you use the car seat component correctly every time. “For some families, this means prioritizing the easiest base install. For others, it’s more important to choose a car seat that offers super-simple harness adjustments to accommodate a growing baby,” she says.

Other safety features to look for include a UPF canopy, stroller wheel locks, a five-point harness, and an anti-rebound bar. Regardless of the features your travel system has, make sure to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when assembling and using it.

Weight and Height Limitations

Every travel system has height and weight limitations for both the car seat and the stroller. It’s important to make sure your baby fits within these limits for their safety. Plus, keep the limits for the car seat in mind so you’ll know to transition your baby into a larger rear-facing seat when the time comes.

“Infant car seats are designed to be used from birth. This applies to travel systems too,” Pratt says. “Just make sure that the car seat and stroller manuals are both followed carefully.” Since travel systems include regular stroller seats in addition to the car seat, you’ll want to pay close attention to the requirements for that, too. “For example, some stroller seats don’t recline enough for newborns, so there may be age requirements or milestone minimums—such as sitting up—before a baby can use the stroller seat instead of riding in their car seat,” Pratt adds.

Stroller Configuration Options

Many travel systems and car seat stroller combos are designed so that your child can use the stroller as they continue to grow well past the infant car seat stage, while others, like the Doona Infant Car Seat & Latch Base , are strictly for the infant phase. Some of our picks have many conversions, like the Graco Modes Nest2Grow Travel System , which can convert into a double stroller without purchasing a second seat.

Think about what you’d like out of the product to help you narrow down your best options. If you plan to have another baby close in age, a double travel system that can fit an infant and a toddler is a useful choice.

Ease of Use

Loading your kids into the car is hard enough—no one wants to add fighting with complicated baby gear into the mix. When shopping for a travel system, you’ll want to find a stroller that’s simple to set up and break down so you can toss it in the trunk. When it comes to the car seat, you’ll need one that clicks in and out of its base or the stroller without a big fuss. After all, the point of a travel system is to make your life easier!

The type of travel system that’s most convenient for you will also vary based on your lifestyle. “City dwellers with minimal storage space or those who frequently use rideshares may want a small, compact-fold stroller that opens and closes with one hand,” says Pratt. “And suburban families will have a whole different priority list. They may want a stroller that handles a bit rougher terrain or fits in their minivan with the third row up.” Luckily, car seat and stroller combos come in a wide variety of sizes and styles, so there’s one out there that will fit your family’s needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

While there are many benefits, travel systems particularly come in handy if you travel by car with your baby often. These systems consist of a compatible infant car seat, stroller, and car seat base, so they’re designed to work together to make transporting your baby more practical. “It’s so convenient to click an infant car seat into the stroller for quick errands, doctor’s appointments, or neighborhood walks,” says Pratt. “Just be mindful of how much time a baby spends in their car seat outside of the car, and offer lots of breaks.”

Plus, car seat safety is incredibly important, and it can be helpful to have gear that’s specifically made to go together so you can ensure you’re using the pieces correctly. Some infant car seats are also compatible with other brands’ strollers, but if you’re using different brands, make sure that the pieces are confirmed to be compatible and safe to use together.

A LATCH system—an acronym for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children—is a common way to secure a child’s car seat without using the vehicle’s seat belts. Typically, LATCH systems are found in car seat bases, and they consist of latches, hooks, and anchors that keep the car seat securely in place at the right height.

After installing a car seat base that has a LATCH system into a vehicle (which can be relatively permanent if you frequently drive the same car), you’ll need to attach the base and the car seat each time you strap your baby into the car. Thankfully, most brands make this process easy and safe, with helpful indicators and clicking sounds letting you know when the car seat is positioned correctly.

How to travel with a stroller and car seat

Perhaps the easiest way to travel with a stroller and car seat is to invest in the two-in-one Doona Car Seat & Stroller , which can be used for children up to about 35 pounds and stored in the overhead bin of a plane. However, other travel stroller systems can also ease the burden of all that gear – especially for those traveling with infants. Here's how to travel with a stroller and car seat in the following situations:

If your baby is in an infant car seat: Simply attach a compatible infant car seat to your everyday or travel-specific stroller and wheel your baby through the airport. When you arrive at the gate, check your car seat and stroller free of charge. (Children 2 and younger can fly for free as lap children on most airlines.) If you'd like to purchase a seat for your baby and bring your car seat on the plane – recommended by the FAA and American Academy of Pediatrics – you'll need to ensure it is FAA-compliant . Alternatively, you can wear your baby in a carrier and use the car seat and/or stroller for storage.

If your baby is not in an infant car seat: If your child is somewhere between an infant and a toddler but no longer uses an infant car seat at home, you can technically get by without a car seat since they can ride through the airport in a stroller or carrier and then sit on your lap during the flight if they are younger than 2. However, you'll need to rent or borrow a car seat when you arrive at your destination.

If you have a toddler older than 2: Children are not legally required to have a car seat for air travel, though it's still recommended by the FAA and AAP (and you will likely need one when you get to your final destination anyway). It's easiest to wheel your child in the travel stroller and transport your FAA-compliant car seat by simply carrying it (not preferable, of course) or using one of the following assists:

  • Travel cart: Most luggage carts (including the ones offered at the airport) cannot go through security, so look for a foldable travel cart – this one by HÖLM is a good option – that can easily be placed on the security screening belt and then used to transport your belongings to the gate.
  • Car seat luggage strap: Strap the car seat to your carry-on bag with a heavy duty luggage strap like this one .
  • Car seat backpack: You can free up your hands by wearing a car seat backpack .

If your toddler won't sit in the stroller: Use your stroller as a travel cart instead – strap the car seat and anything else you can get on there. Once you get to the gate, you can either check your car seat (typically free of charge) or bring it with you on board.

Travel Stroller FAQ

Deciding whether you need a travel stroller is an entirely personal decision. Some people are content to travel with the stroller they use at home, while many prefer travel strollers since they are typically less bulky than their everyday counterparts.

No, a stroller can typically be checked at the gate free of charge and picked up on the jet bridge post-flight. It's always best to review your airline's stroller policies before flying, however.

Yes. Simply put it on the X-ray belt with the rest of your belongings.

The Joolz Aer and Doona Car Seat & Stroller can fit in most overhead bins. However, it may be easier to gate check your stroller (typically for free) so you have less to carry on to the plane.

While a stroller bag is not required, it can be useful for protecting your stroller from potential dirt and damage if it needs to be checked at the gate, as well as storing additional items – think: diapers (which can double as extra padding), wipes and other small essentials. Some travel strollers come with a branded stroller bag, but if you'd like a different option, check out these highly rated bags:

  • Zohzo Stroller Travel Bag
  • J.L. Childress Gate Check Travel Bag
  • Gate Check PRO Stroller Bag

Disney World requires that both single and double strollers do not exceed 52 x 31 inches (length by width) when fully assembled. Below are the best strollers for Disney World that meet these requirements (listed with unfolded dimensions in inches):

  • Joolz Aer : 32.7 x 17.7
  • UPPAbaby MINU V2 : 35.5 x 20.3
  • UPPAbaby G-LINK 2 : 27.5 x 28.5
  • Doona Car Seat & Stroller : 32.3 x 17.4
  • Nuna TRVL Stroller : 32.5 x 20.25
  • Summer 3D Lite Convenience Stroller : 27 x 18

The UPPAbaby strollers and Nuna TRVL Stroller are especially ideal for Disney parks since they offer UPF 50+ canopies for protection from the sun. Wagons are prohibited entirely.

Two Little Pandas

The Ultimate Guide to Travel with Twins:

Flying with twins has its challenges (MANY many challenges). But it’s certainly not impossible! In fact, we actually do enjoy traveling with our twins! And we think you will learn to love it as well. But there are a few things we’ve learned along the way we’d like to share with you. We’re hoping you can avoid making some of the many mistakes we made, and make sure your first trip, or 16th trip, goes smoothly with your twins!

As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

When to start traveling

How early your twins start traveling is a decision you and your doctor will have to make. Your twins can likely begin to travel by car right away, if you are up for it. However, you might find that you don’t get a lot of driving done between all the stops to feed, change, and burp, and generally keep your twins happy. So you’ll want to prepare yourself for a slow pace, or keep road trips pretty short for the first few months.

For air travel, pediatricians generally recommend you wait 4-6 weeks before you begin air travel, or longer if your twins were premature or have any other health concerns. Ultimately it’ll be up to you and your doctor to decide when the right time is to fly.

My twins were ‘late preterm’, which is between 34-37 weeks, and had no major health issues. However, because they were small, and because we were sleep-deprived and overwhelmed, we were not ready to start traveling by air until they were about 5 months old.

Whenever you decide to start, you’ll want to make sure you are prepared for travel with your twins. Here are our tips for making sure travel with your twins is as easy as it can be.

1. Keep the sleep schedule in mind

When traveling with twin infants or toddlers, you’ll want to be mindful of their sleep schedule. When you have two, keeping everyone on a sleep schedule is SO important. But it can be SO tough when traveling.

Some babies fall asleep the second the plane takes off, and snooze away the flight. However, there are a LOT of babies that don’t, mine included. For my twins, flights are really stimulating and it is difficult for them to fall asleep at all, even on long flights. In fact, on one flight, flight attendants commented that, even though it was late, NONE of the little guys on the flight were sleeping. Every baby was awake.

We were shocked when our 5-month-old twins didn’t fall asleep on their first flight. It was about 6 hours long, and we landed LONG after their normal bedtime, but they basically didn’t sleep at all.

So what do you do? Well certainly don’t panic. But do think about which sleeps are ok to adjust for your twins, and which are not. For example, we were ok to shift naps away, or skip them, and could recover. But we had a really hard time if our twins (and ourselves!) didn’t get enough nighttime sleep.

Travel days can be long, so it’s not unusual that you’ll HAVE to give up some sleep and either get up earlier than normal, or go to bed later than normal.

So, even while traveling, we made sure the twins were settled, and in bed at their normal bedtime. But we’d allow ourselves to have more flexibility during the day.

2. Choose the right flights

Pick flights during their awake times- at least when they are little. This may seem counterintuitive, but it really works. Here’s why: as we just discussed, lots of little guys cannot fall asleep on the plane. So if you are in a new environment when your twins are already overtired, and probably overstressed, it can be a disaster, especially when you have two! It’s much easier to keep them entertained during their normal playtime.

For twin toddlers, we found that keeping them trapped in a seat for hours can be TOUGH, but a toddler (or two) having an overtired, overstimulated meltdown is tougher.

For my twins, mornings are usually the happiest time of day. When taking longer flights, we’d pick daytime and try to avoid flying during their normal nighttime sleep.

3. Choose the Right Seats

When choosing your seating arrangement on the flight, there are a lot of different scenarios.

If your twins are under the age of 2, you are generally allowed to hold them on your lap and avoid paying for a ticket for them on domestic flights. Should you? Well, that really depends.

The first thing to note is that the FAA strongly encourages you to put your child in a car seat while flying, as that is the safest place for them to be . And putting your twins in a car seat also means purchasing them their own seat.

However, tickets are expensive, and reduced ticket prices for children are very rare for domestic flights (but sometimes free or reduced costs tickets are available on international flights). And flying with lap infants can save a lot of money. But for longer flights, or with babies over about 1 year old, we don’t think it’s worth the cost savings. After a few hours, both parents and twins will get tired of sharing the same tiny space. And for wiggly toddlers, one shared seat is definitely not enough space to move around.

Two adults, with both twins as lap babies

Generally, you can only have one lap infant per row, so, unfortunately, you won’t be able to sit together. For this scenario, we prefer to sit with one adult right in front of the other, and in the aisle seat. Babies need frequent diaper changes, and I found myself getting up to walk around pretty often while flying with babies. Plus, my husband and I liked to be able to communicate, and pass babies and gear back and forth as needed throughout the flight.

Our favorite twin baby arrangement- 3 seats for 2 adults and two babies

The seating arrangement that worked best for us when our twins were babies was to buy three seats for the four of us so that we took the entire row on one side (see below).

Seating arrangement for two babies with two adults

We loved it because we had that small space all to ourselves.  It was (somewhat) easy to pass the babies around as needed, and we had control of the coveted window seat.  Well- not so much the window seat, but the pull-down shade that both babies loved to play with. We also didn’t have to ask a stranger to move for diaper changes or walking the babies around the plane.

Two adults, twins in their own seats

Once your twins hit that 2-year mark, you’ll need to purchase a seat for them. Even if they are under 2 years old, having a seat for everyone makes flights a bit more comfortable for everyone.

Since most domestic flights have 2 or 3 seats on each row, you’ll end up not sitting RIGHT together. We prefer to sit with one adult and one child directly in front of the other child and adult. We find that it’s easier to communicate, rather than trying to shout across the aisle.

If your twins are young babies, I’d pick the center and aisle seat since you’ll likely be getting up a LOT to change diapers and walk to keep the baby happy.

But for older babies, toddlers, and kids, we prefer the window and center seat. My twins learned that the window seat was the best VERY early on. If we picked the center and aisle seat, my twins would be desperately climbing into a stranger’s lap to get to that window- no one wants that!

Traveling alone with twins/One adult and twins

Traveling alone with twins is not for the faint of heart. And it can take a fair bit of preparation.

The first thing you need to know is that you cannot have two lap infants with just one adult. So you will need to purchase a seat for at least one of your twins. Of course, if they are over the age of 2, you’ll need to purchase a seat for both.

2 seats for 3 (twins and one adult)

If you do end up choosing to purchase 2 seats for the 3 of you (so one lap infant with you, and one infant in his/her own seat), we recommend the center and aisle seat. That way, you’ll have easy access to get up to bounce a baby in the aisle, or take them to the restroom for diaper changes. If you CAN, we’d also definitely recommend bringing a car seat with you. It can be tough to put a baby in the airplane seat alone- the seat just isn’t designed for someone that small.

3 seats for the 3 of you

The other option is to have 3 seats for the 3 of you. In that case, I’d check with the airline to make sure the plane you’ll be on has at least 3 seats in a row. And make sure that you can select your seats, and do it asap. Then I’d check again, double check seat guru , confirm as your flight dates get closer, and reconfirm the day before. I would not want to fly with 1 of my young children not right next to me. For me, any other seating arrangement would be unacceptable.

Still trying to figure out exactly how to get your twins through the airport and onto the plane alone? The logistics are complicated for sure. Babywearing both babies plus all their gear all the way through the airport is not going to be comfortable. However, bringing baby carriers is not a bad idea. Also, if you are bringing a car seat, or two for the flight, make sure you have an easy way to get them around. For example, click them into your stroller for the airport. Then bring a luggage cart, like this , that you can strap them to as you board the plane.

The airport

Use a stroller to get through the airport. Even if they can walk, it’s so much easier to keep track of them when they are in the stroller . But be prepared to take them out as you go through security. However, we’ve gotten lucky a number of times and been able to leave them in and push them through. You never know. In the case that you do need to take them out, get everything else on the scanner first, and free your hands. If your twins are old enough to walk, have one or both walk through while holding your hands. Otherwise, carry them through together- it’s not far so you can handle it!

Getting on the plane

Once it’s time to get on the plane, you’ll have to give up your stroller. This is when baby carriers (yes 2 of them!) can come in REALLY handy. I know my twins tend to fall asleep either right before we board, or right before we deplane. Once they are past the infant stage, carrying two sleeping babies, or toddlers is next to impossible. But, with the help of baby carriers, you can get one carefully strapped to your back, then either carry in your arms or use a second carrier to assist.

For more tips on how to get out of the house with twins, check out my post here .

4. Babywear if possible

Making your way through the airport with twins, and all the gear you need for them is tricky, to say the least. And you’ll want your hands free to find your ID, phone, wallet, or whatever else you might need.

If you have two adults, and twins that will handle it, we 100% recommend babywearing. I typically always travel with my husband, so we each take a baby. It makes the whole process easier, from check-in to baggage claim, so much easier. Plus, we can avoid the whole stroller shuffle while going through security and boarding the plane. In fact, you can leave your babies in the carriers the whole time as you go through security!

5. OR Use a great double stroller

If your twins are too big for baby carriers or just don’t like it (or maybe YOU don’t like it), then you’ll want a great double stroller.

You’ll want a stroller that folds up easily, with one hand, since you’ll need to get in and out of it quickly to go through security and to gate check it as you board the plane. And one that folds up small enough to fit in a rental car, or whatever car you’ll be carrying it in, truly lightweight, and maneuverable for navigating busy airports.

Read our post on the best lightweight double strollers here !

Side Note: if you are flying on American Airlines, they have a very strict stroller policy and allow only strollers under 20lbs to be gate-checked. Bigger strollers will need to be checked at the ticket counter. Be prepared for this as it can REALLY mess with your plans!

infant travel system for twins

6. Check all luggage

You are probably going to end up with a LOT of luggage. Traveling with twins means you’re just not going to travel as light as you did before kids. But even if you managed to fit EVERYTHING in a carry-on-sized bag, check it! Absolutely check it! The only things you want to bring on the plane are your perfectly packed carry-on bag (we’ll discuss that later), and your twins!

For our tips on packing light, even with younger kids, read our post here .

Yes it costs extra, and that’s annoying, but trust us, you’ll have your hands full just with just your twins. Trying to also drag a big suitcase everywhere you go is just too much! (And if you don’t like paying for checking your bags, consider opening up one of these credit cards that will get you free checked bags. Often, everyone on your reservation will also get free checked bags. Just check the annual fee against the benefits you’ll use to decide if it makes sense).

In fact, it’s going to be tough to get all your stuff from the car to the ticket counter. We usually have to check 2 car seat bags, and one or two suitcases in addition to our carry-ons, and of course the kiddos. You’ll need one of those luggage carts you’ve probably noticed but never used (since you never had two babies) before. They are overpriced, but if they allow you to get a massive amount of luggage to a place where someone will take some of it without sweating, it’s worth it.

7. Use Car Seat Backpacks

If you are bringing your car seats, make sure you have a plan. Those things are big and heavy and hard to lug around. And, especially when you have two car seats, you’ll want to have an easy way to carry them. We love this padded one because of the extra padding to minimize damage during luggage transport and backpack straps for those times when we don’t have a luggage cart. We found that we can generally get away with throwing a few light-weight items, like a blanket or a stuffed animal to provide a little extra padding for the car seat, and extra storage for bulky items.

Read more about our favorite car seat travel bags here .

Need that car seat off your back? For walking longer distances, like when bringing car seats on the plane and thus needing to carry through the airport, we love these simple foldable luggage cart . Note that it isn’t designed for the child to ride in the car seat, but it will help you transport your carseat through the airport more easily. We wanted something that would work with any car seat, knowing that we wouldn’t be in the bucket car seats forever.  We didn’t need one that the kids could ride in, and we really didn’t want to pay for one of the branded car seat carriers. This luggage cart has worked great for us!

8. Pack a great carry-on

Flying with an infant. He is happy in his own seat

Twins need a lot of gear. And if you want to keep your twins happy, clean-ish, and reasonably quiet in a confined space, like the airplane, you’re going to want the exact right gear! In fact, I think what you pack in your carry-on can really make or break your flight. No pressure!

Bring Plenty of food

Flight delays and cancellations can happen. One thing you CAN control is making sure you have enough for your twins (and yourself), even if you’re traveling a few hours longer than you’d planned

For bottle-fed babies, make sure you bring plenty of extra formula, and whatever other supplies you’ll need.

For toddlers and kids, bring heavy, nonperishable snacks that can work as a meal in a pinch. In fact, my kids usually prefer to eat JUST snacks over regular meals on travel days. I do my best to get as many nutrients in as possible, but let them decide what to eat on those travel days.

Also, remember that snacks can be entertainment. This is especially true for younger toddlers who are fairly new to food. But it works for some older kids as well. Bring a variety of non-super-messy or smelly foods, including a treat or two as a distraction for particularly tough moments to keep your twins entertained.

Bring Great Toys

Check out our post on the best travel toys here .

For babies, familiar favorite toys are a great choice for the plane. We pick a variety- some that are designed for more active play, and some that are great as a sleep aid.

For toddlers or older kids, we recommend bringing a few small, new toys. They can be given out throughout the flight as a fun little surprise. We get two of every toy because, inevitably, whatever toy one twin is playing with, the other twin wants it. It’s not worth the battle on the plane. You’ll want toys that are small, interesting, and fun to play with, and not something that’s just going to roll onto the floor and get lost.

Tablets can also be a lifesaver on travel days. We are really relaxed about screen time during travel days, which is a huge treat for my twins. They help a lot with busting boredom and keeping my twins happy!

Extra Clothing and Diapers

Accidents happen. Make sure you’re prepared for anything your twins throw at you (literally and figuratively).

For babies, bring at least one full outfit for each of your twins. Also, make sure you have at least a couple more diapers than you expect you’ll need JUST in case. If your twins are prone to blowouts, maybe bring 2 full outfits. Pack each outfit in a reusable wetbag or ziploc bag. That way, you can remove the clean outfit, and put the soiled outfit back in the bag, and there is no mess in your diaper bag.

As your twins get older, you might not need as much spare clothing. But we think it’s better to be prepared for the worst. Getting stuck in wet or dirty clothing is a quick way to make your twins uncomfortable and cranky in an already stressful situation.

You may also consider bringing some extra clothing for YOU. You likely won’t need a full change of clothing, but it might come in handy in the event of a big mess or an accident.

Think about their ears

Don’t forget that your twins might end up with pressure and pain due to elevation changes on the flight.

For babies, bring a pacifier, a bottle, or be prepared to nurse during take-off and landing. Since the flight attendants likely won’t let you nurse/hold both babies at the same time during take-off and landing, make sure you have a plan for the other baby.

For toddlers and older kids, bring something they’ll want to eat for both takeoff and landing. We usually bring lollipops or some kind of treat. That way, they are happily snacking, and their ears are popping as they swallow.

Another option is kids-sized ear planes . They help reduce some of the noise on the plane, and help with pressure shifts that cause pain.

Baby earmuffs. He might need them on the flight :)

9. Be prepared

When traveling with kids, things can get a LITTLE hectic at times. And there is a LOT you can’t plan out. You can’t know if flights are going to be delayed or canceled, if your twins will sleep, or what the passenger sitting next to you will be like.

But you can still have a plan for a LOT of things. Make sure you have all your travel documentation organized and ready to go. Double-check any travel requirements, especially in the age of a pandemic.

And take a moment to think through how you’ll get through security. If you have a stroller, you’ll likely need to get your twins out, fold up the stroller and put it through the x-ray, then walk through with your twins.

Read our tips for easily navigating the airport with kids here.

It can also be a bit tricky to get on the plane because aisles are narrow, and you won’t be able to take your stroller. It is particularly tricky if you are bringing larger carry-ons and car seats. Make sure you’ve not planned to bring on more than you can realistically carry.

One last tricky spot is getting the luggage from our car to the check-in counter. It can be tricky, and usually requires a luggage cart to transport all of our luggage, and our twins, into the airport.

10. Don’t worry

Bringing twins onto a plane CAN be a little intimidating. And yes, there are people who will groan when they see you getting on the plane with a couple of babies or toddlers. But honestly, MOST people are great. There are tons of other parents, even parents whose children are already grown up, who totally understand that you can’t keep your twins silent (or even QUIET sometimes). And if people are annoyed at your babies for existing, oh well. They can either 1. fly private, or 2. deal with it.

Fun little story

Our first flight with my twins was kind of awful. They were about 5 months old.  It was a 6-hour flight in the afternoon/evening. We really expected they would sleep a lot. But guess what? They didn’t. They basically didn’t sleep at all. Perhaps their ears were hurting and they were overtired, and they were crying quite a lot. I was so stressed out worrying about everyone else on the flight hating us that I couldn’t really calm down, and the babies were big-time picking up on my stress, and the cycle continued. In fact, I actually got shingles from the stress.

Once I really thought about it, there was no reason to stress. Most people on that flight were so incredibly kind to us. Tons of people went out of their way to show support. AND my stress was actually making the situation way worse.

So, get yourself in the right mindset. Be ready for a few tears, and know that you are doing your best, and who cares what anyone else thinks!

My list of things I need to BE before flying with twins would include:

  • Very well-rested, or very well-caffeinated . The roar of the engines wears me out but twin moms don’t have time to be tired. I breastfed so I obviously couldn’t ACTUALLY get a lot of sleep OR drink a lot of coffee, but .. for pretend
  • VERY relaxed. My kids can’t nap on the plane. It drives me KIND of crazy, but I just have to let it ok. They are usually fine/happy, but I get caught up in how tired I think they are. Don’t do that 🙂
  • Ready to sing .. a lot. Singing makes babies happy, and you are going to want to make them HAPPY. Maybe bring a playlist you can sing along to, or a book of nursery rhymes to remind yourself.
  • Totally disinterested, even OBLIVIOUS tdeed2iapoohuaQuai1afo what others on the plane are thinking. Don’t worry about other people on the plane. Who cares if people are mad because your babies are crying! Sometimes babies cry. That’s just the way it is.
  • Confident. Try this mantra: I am a good parent. I am doing my best and it is good enough.
  • Open-minded. They may want to listen to you sing and talk to them or they may want to rattle a toy. They may not be able to nap regularly, and that’s totally ok. Flight attendants are typically pretty understanding. They will often allow you to walk up and down the aisles if you need to.

Strollers for Twins: Top Picks

Looking for the best twin stroller? In this article, we discuss the various types of twin strollers and our favorites of each. Not sure if you need an umbrella stroller? A tandem stroller? Not to worry, we will break it ALL down for you.

Hey guys — It’s Meg Collins, Editor in Chief, and Marissa Bader, mom of twins and our multiples editor. We’ve been reviewing double strollers now for 10 years. It’s really our specialty!

infant travel system for twins

In a nutshell, there are three types of twin strollers.

  • Infant Twin Frame Strollers
  • Full-Featured Twin Strollers
  • Double Umbrella Strollers

For newborn and infant twins, there’s your basic double frame stroller , which is used solely to cart around babes in their car seats.

Next are your full-featured double strollers , which can be used from infancy well into toddlerhood.

Last is the  double umbrella stroller , which is a lightweight stroller that is great for travel with your 6+ month old twinnies. For those, please see the  double umbrella stroller guide .

Newborns and Infants

For newborn twins, there are two routes you can take in the stroller department:

1. Get a double frame stroller  for the first 9 months or so, then get your “real stroller” later in the first year.

infant travel system for twins

Frame strollers are built specifically to hold babies in their car seats – and nothing else (i.e., they don’t have “seats” of their own). Thus, they only last for as long as your babes are in their infant car seats, which is roughly a year (or less). Realistically, most twin parents use them for about 9 months. After 9 months (give or take), the babies are too heavy to carry around in their car seats.

The main reason people use this is because it is an extremely lightweight stroller (compared to their full-sized counterparts), easy to use, and easy to get in and out of the car.

2. Buy your  full-featured double  stroller right off the bat.

infant travel system for twins

If you live in a rural area, or any area where you will encounter non-paved or uneven surfaces (cobblestones, uneven sidewalks, etc.) on a daily basis, or you live in a place with snow/ice, etc., the frame stroller won’t work very well for you. Thus, an all-terrain twin stroller (or even a double jogging stroller ) is more appropriate.

Most parents of multiples stick with strategy number one to start with, the simple twin car seat stroller frame, because it’s so lightweight and convenient (with the caveat that frame strollers don’t work well on rough terrain), and then later upgrade to their full-featured stroller.

If you drive a lot, some parents keep their frame stroller in their car at all times and keep their nice double stroller at home in the garage.

As you can see, there are many ways of skinning this cat! It all depends on the needs of your lifestyle.

Ok, let’s drill down a little deeper….

Best Full-Featured Twin Strollers

The synopsis (in order of price) –

Twin Strollers – In Depth

While writing the complete Double Stroller Guide , we made special note of those strollers that would be especially awesome for twins . Our twins editor (Marissa) and I compared notes with our twin parent friends, and voila .

Some of these are tandems and some are side-by-sides (SBS). Which type is right for you? Please read the introduction in our double stroller guide to learn more about the pros and cons of each kind.

The pickings for twin strollers are somewhat slim because of our stringent criteria for a good twin stroller: 1. Few double strollers take two infant car seats (or two bassinets) at the same time. Note: those that do typically stagger the car seats in a stadium-seating configuration to allow room for both, and also to balance the stroller so it doesn’t tip over. 2. Many double strollers (tandems, especially) have a “big kid seat” and a “little kid seat.” While these can work for twins, it’s much better to have two identical stroller seats . The UPPABaby Vista V2, for example, is an awesome double stroller that can take two infant car seats, but… has the big seat/little seat problem (one 50 lb seat and one 35 lb seat), so it’s okay for twins, but not ideal. Furthermore, strollers with two big seats (40-50 lb limit seats) can be used for longer (vs. other strollers where the max weight of the little kid stroller seat is 30 lbs or so).

Without further ado, here are our favorite twin strollers:

1. Kolcraft Cloud Plus Lightweight Double stroller — Economy Pick

  • Price: $162
  • Stroller Weight: 23 lbs
  • Weight Limit:  40 lbs per seat (80 lbs combined)

If you’re looking for a budget double stroller that’s great for travel (or every day throw-in-the-car use), and has plenty of solid features, check out our Kolcraft Cloud Plus Lightweight Double Stroller review. This stroller is not sexy, but it does hit some high points — all for around $200.

2.  Contours Options Elite V2 — “Poor Man’s City Select”

  • Price:  $499 (on sale at Amazon for $399 )
  • Stroller Weight:  34 lbs

This tandem stroller is one of the more affordable “good for twins” double strollers. We call it the “poor man’s City Select” because it offers many of the same features, but for a lower price tag. It accepts two infant car seats as well, making it an awesome pick for twins.

3. Mountain Buggy Nano Duo — Most Compact, Full-Featured

  • Price: ~ $549
  • Stroller Weight: 20 lbs
  • Weight Limit: 33 lbs per seat (66 lbs combined)

One of our favorite features for twin parents: the Mountain Buggy Nano Duo can accept two infant car seats, when paired with the Nano Duo Twin Infant Car Seat Adapter . Alternatively, you can attach Mountain Buggy’s new cocoon for newborn twins (~ $109), so your duo can lay cozy and snug together!

4. Mockingbird Single to Double — Best New Convertible (direct to consumer)

  • Bundle price for both the stroller and 2nd seat kit: ~ $595
  • Weight: 26.5 lbs without 2nd Seat; 35 lbs with two seats
  • Weight Limit: 45 lbs per seat

The Mockingbird Single-to-Double stroller has gained major traction since it hit the stroller scene a few years ago. This convertible stroller is a solid choice for multiples because it can easily accommodate three kids, with the use of the 2nd seat kit ($145) and glider board ($95), both purchased separately.

What’s great about the Mockingbird Single-to-Double for twins is that both the toddler seat and the 2nd seat are exactly the same — there’s no big kid/little kid seat situation, like on the UPPAbaby Vista. Both seats can accommodate children up to 45 lbs. The Mockingbird superceded the Vista as a top double stroller pick for twins for this reason.

The Mockingbird Single-to-Double accepts two infant car seats, but you can also use this stroller with newborn twins. Both seats lay perfectly flat, and with the purchase of two infant inserts ($35, sold separately), your babies will be snug and cozy and have the extra head and neck support they need for safe strolling.

Also awesome for parents of twins who don’t have the time (or free hands!) to remove stroller seats before folding, the Mockingbird Single-to-Double can fold with both seats attached (and it’s a super simple one-handed fold, too — woohoo !).

Favorite part: you can get custom canopies for your twinnies:

5. Valco Baby Slim Twin — Narrowest Side-by-Side

  • Price: ~ 599
  • Stroller Weight: 24 lbs
  • Weight Limit: 45 lbs per seat (90 lbs combined)

The Valco Baby Slim Twin, which replaces Valco’s now discontinued Neo Twin, is one of the narrowest double side-by-side strollers on the market! At only 24 lbs and 26 inches wide, you will have no problem maneuvering your twins through store aisles, doorways and other slim spaces. The Slim Twin is also great for travel!

6. Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 Double — Good Basic All-Terrain

  • Price : ~ $699
  • Stroller Weight: 36.5 lbs
  • Weight Limit: 50 lbs per seat (100 lbs combined)

The City Mini GT2 Double is a super popular side-by-side double stroller that’s also great for twins! The big downside to this stroller for twins is that you can only use it with one car seat at a time, which won’t help much for newborn twins; however, you can buy two compact prams for use in infancy (0-6 months only), or for 3 month+ twins in the regular seats.

7. Baby Jogger City Select 2 — Most Spacious/Versatile Tandem for Twins –  for parents in flat areas (not good in hills)

  • Price: ~ $699 for the double regular model & ~ $799 for the double Eco Collection model
  • Stroller Weight:  35 lbs
  • Weight Limit:  45 lbs per seat (90 lbs combined)

The City Select has been replaced by the Baby Jogger City Select 2 (a stroller that combines the best parts of the City Select and City Select Lux — see link to review below). The Baby Jogger City Select is the most popular  tandem  twin stroller – and one of my favorites as well. The City Select is a  convertible stroller , which means it can be used as a single or as a double. For twins, you can buy the  whole thing as a double – and hey, it’s good to know you can use it for a singleton should you have another [single] baby (never say never! Haha).

8. Valco Baby Tri Mode Duo X — Best for Twins + Singleton

  • Price : ~ $750
  • Stroller Weight : 34 lbs
  • Weight Limit : 45 lbs per seat (90 lbs combined)

One of the unique features of many Valco Baby strollers is that you can add a third seat (the toddler seat ) for a third child to ride along in the stroller. We discuss this in depth in the Best Strollers for 3 Babies or Toddlers .

9. Mountain Buggy Duet — Very Narrow All-Terrain, Side-by-Side

  • Price: $769
  • Stroller Weight:  34 lbs as a double
  • Weight Limit:  79 lbs combined

The Duet is a very narrow, rugged all-terrain stroller that’s great for twins.

infant travel system for twins

Mountain Buggy recently debuted two cool new items for twins: Cocoon for Twins and the Carrycot Plus for Twins .

infant travel system for twins

They are both compatible with the Duet, and clip right onto the stroller’s frame. Both options allow twins to snuggle together closely in (and out of) the stroller — yes, you can lay your babies in the Cocoon or Carrycot for naps and overnight sleep as well.

While the Cocoon is perfect for newborn twins, the Carrycot Plus — which offers three different parent-facing modes — is suitable for children up to 3 years of age. We love twin-minded innovations!

10. Peg Perego Book for Two — Luxury Narrow Side-by-Side

  • Price : $799
  • Stroller Weight : 30 lbs

The Peg Perego Book for Two can be used as a double travel system from birth (with Peg Perego car seats only, FYI), and later on as your full-sized double stroller. It’s narrow and easy to push, maneuver and fold. It rides well over various types of terrain and has a lot of luxury features that make it a solid pick for your twins.

11. Bumbleride Indie Twin — Side-by-Side Luxury Pick; Beautiful Eco All-Terrain Stroller

  • Price:  $899
  • Stroller Weight:  36 lbs
  • Weight Limits:  90 lbs combined

The Indie Twin is an all-time twin parent favorite. Yes, it takes 2 infant car seats at the same time.

infant travel system for twins

The stroller is eco friendly, beautiful and well made. This is a great stroller if you’re looking for a sporty all-terrain stroller that still looks great.

12. Nuna Demi Grow — Tandem Luxury Pick; Compact, Maneuverable “Drives like a single”

  • Price : $ 1,199 as a double ; ~ $949 as a single
  • Stroller Weight: 27.4 lbs (singles) and 35.6 (doubles)
  • Weight Limit: 50 lbs per seat (both the toddler and second seat are exactly the same!)

The Nuna Demi Grow has a special “twin mode” that allows you to stroll both your babies simultaneously in car seats, bassinets or regular seats once they’re older. Yay! (Bassinets, car seats and second seat sold separately.)

13. Bugaboo Donkey5 Twin —   Luxury, Expandable/Versatile Side by Side

  • Price: $1,889+
  • Stroller Weights: 27.5 lbs (Mono) and 31.5 lbs (Duo & Twin)
  • Weight Limit: 50 lbs per seat (100 lbs combined)

Bugaboo makes a version (a package, rather) of the Donkey5 that is specifically for twins.

infant travel system for twins

With the Twin version, here is what you get:

  • 1 extendable stroller base
  • 2 seat/bassinet frames
  • 2 seat fabrics
  • 2 bassinet fabrics
  • 1 side luggage basket
  • 2 sun canopies
  • 2 rain covers

It’s a complete package, but you won’t get out the door for much less than $2k.

The truly unique feature of the Donkey is the double rear-facing feature. You won’t find this in any other side-by-side stroller.

Consider This: Silver Cross Wave Twin Stroller

  • Price: $2,199
  • Weight: chassis weight: 22 lbs; seat weight: 4.4 lbs (30.8 lbs with both seats attached)

If Bugaboo is a Kardashian, then the Silver Cross Wave is British Royalty. Seriously people — this baby is posh, chic and way out of my league.

But if you’re looking for a double for your duo that’s seriously top-of-the line and not the same stroller that everyone else has, you should at least take a peek at the Silver Cross Wave Twin (note, it’s currently not in stock many places, but we will keep checking and update as it becomes more widely available).

infant travel system for twins

The 2022 model of this stroller can accommodate up to 55 lbs in both the upper and lower seats (for a combined total of 110 lbs), which is more than any other double stroller on the market. The Silver Cross can be used as either a single or double stroller — and the adapters needed to convert it into a double come in the box (for this price, that’s a relief!). Bonus: this stroller has reversible seats that recline to three different positions — including lie-flat mode for infants — and can be configured in 30 different ways.

Other notable features: The Silver Cross Wave Twin has all-wheel suspension with puncture proof tires, UPF50+ ventilated canopies with peekaboo windows, and leatherette handlebars, bumper bars and trim.

The Silver Cross Wave Twin comes with two stroller seats (the toddler seat and tandem seat), two bassinets (which can be used for overnight sleeping or daytime naps), two bamboo seat liners, two rain covers, two bug covers, one cup holder and one pair of tandem seat adapters to convert the stroller into a double.

The Silver Cross Wave Twin Stroller is compatible with infant car seats from Nuna, Maxi-Cosi, Cybex, and Clek (infant car seat adapters sold separately).

I was wondering if you have tried out the StrollAIR TwinWay stroller. It seems to be a more affordable version of the Bugaboo Donkey (with less features) but wanted to get some opinions or reviews on it!

Hello! No I haven’t tried it out — thanks for putting it on our radar. I’ll have to look into it!

Avatar of Carly

Hi there! I was looking at the city mini double and the Zoe 2xl stroller for my 10mo twins. Im curious to know the reason the Zoe didn’t make this list? It has been my front runner based on specs but I haven’t compared them in person yet so maybe I am missing something? Any info would be wonderful!!

infant travel system for twins

Hi Carly! We love the Zoe XL2, but it’s more of a travel/umbrella stroller — and on this page we really tried to focus on primary/day-to-day strollers that are more full featured. That’s not to say that you can’t use the Zoe XL2 day to day, but twin parents tend to need something a little more robust. Hope this helps!

Newborn twins stroller

Last updated on August 23rd, 2023 at 10:42 pm

Looking for a newborn twins stroller and not sure which one is best for you? We’ll introduce you to some that we think should be on your registry now.

One of the biggest investments you can make in your twins baby gear is going to be the newborn twins stroller. Double strollers are one of the baby gear items we consider to be pretty much mandatory. We often rank them right up there with car seats and cribs. You have no idea how important a double stroller is until you need to leave the house with your twinnies.

How do you know what kind of stroller you really need? There are so many options, factors, price points, and brands to consider. We have done the research and spoken with twin parents to get you the inside scoop on newborn twins strollers. So, allow us to help you decide which one you need for easier travel with your twinnies.

The Bugaboo Donkey3 Mono Convertible to Double Stroller is another great option, though it might be a bit more expensive than some other double strollers on the market. All of these newborn twins strollers take 2 car seats and each one has its definite merits. Can newborns ride in strollers?

Many new twin parents wonder if they can go for nice neighborhood walks or to take their older kids to the park without having to wear both of their twins. The good news is that your newborns can absolutely ride in the right double stroller.

A double stroller is a great investment and you can start using many of the models the day your twins are born. You just need to make sure that the newborn twins stroller has seats that recline fully for use before 6 months of age. Before that age, your babies won’t be able to sit upright or hold their heads up. If the seats in the stroller do not fully recline, it should have a base or adapter to attach infant car seats or even bassinets.

Are you looking for the  best double stroller for twins ? Not sure if you should go for a  tandem stroller  or a  side-by-side stroller ? And what about a  Snap N’ Go ? Are double strollers worth it?

YES! This cannot be stressed enough. Double strollers are worth every penny. Now, the amount of money you choose to spend on a stroller will be up to you. Some newborn twins strollers are more expensive than others, but you can find a good double stroller at a reasonable price to meet most of your needs.

The more inexpensive options may not have as many of the frills that come with some of your luxury brands. But, keep in mind that a stroller doesn’t have to be the most expensive baby gear item you purchase. Often, you can get away with a basic model if you are just looking to get out of the house and take a nice, leisurely walk with your babies.

If you’re struggling to breastfeed your twins, you need to book a consultation with Twiniversity founder and certified lactation consultant , Natalie Diaz today!

What to consider when picking a newborn twins stroller

When choosing which newborn twins stroller is right for your family you need to consider how you will be using it. The kind of tires and suspension you will need depend on this. Will you be running? Walking around the park, or sticking to the sidewalks?

You should also consider the cost. Some are much more expensive than others and the cost of all of the extras may not be realistic for your budget. The cost of the stroller and any needed accessories should be taken into account.

Don’t forget to look at included accessories and features. Some strollers have a nice peek-a-boo window to check on your little ones. This may be something you want to have. Some newborn twins stroller models have an adjustable handlebar or a hand brake. Decide what features are important to you to help you narrow down your choices.

Travel to Moscow with Kids

Cruise on the Moskvar River when you travel to Moscow with kids

By Helen Fletcher – HolidaysFromHels

Looking for a bit of an adventure, we decided to travel to Moscow with our kids, in the middle of the winter . And, it turned out to be the snowiest winter in the past 20 years. It took some preparation, but seeing the onion domed cathedrals dolloped with snow was magical. Traveling to Moscow with kids, and doing so in winter was challenging but rewarding. And, going at this time of year provided us the bonus opportunity of trying out snow tubing and ice skating in the once infamous Gorky Park . All the details from our family adventure are below, so let’s get going! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave us a comment below .

Table of Contents

The Main Questions We Had About Our Travel to Moscow With Kids

In the winter time, would it be too cold to travel to moscow with kids.

The answer is no, not if you bring the proper gear . February is the best time to travel to Moscow with kids, as the temperatures are no longer at their coldest. It can get to -40 degrees in January, but in February it is not yet warm enough for the snowy streets to turn to rivers of slush, as they do in March.

Is is safe to travel to Moscow with kids?

We felt no sense of danger, even at night. The soldiers and medal wearing military men wandering around the Kremlin simply add an element of interest rather than fear.

7 Ways to Plan Ahead for Some Travel to Moscow with Kids

1. start the visa application asap.

Make the visa application no more than 90 days before travel, but plan to use the full 90 days . Part of the process requires you to travel to the application office for digital fingerprinting for everyone 12 or over .

Fill in the visa application form .  For UK citizens apply here . Be warned, it is a pretty intrusive and time consuming process to do a whole family application. You will need your last 3 passports and details of all countries you have visited in the last 10 years. You will also need to disclose your monthly salary, and you will also need to note your social media accounts.

I’m not going to lie, the visa application process is no walk in the park. You can pay companies to do the legwork for you, but I was up for saving money, and finding the information needed to complete the form is the hardest part anyway. No one else can do that for you.

NOTE: There are also lots of travel agency sites masquerading as official application centers, so go directly through the Embassy or Consulate nearest you to avoid extra costs.

2. Pay for Flexibility

Book flexible flights – in case the visa does not come through. Also, make sure to book a hotel room that can be canceled/rescheduled with no extra charge. When you book a hotel, obtain a hotel voucher to be submitted with your visa application. Ensure the names and dates on the voucher exactly match your passports and flight dates. Also look at how cool your name looks in Russian writing!

3. Packing Appropriately for a Winter Trip to Moscow

Travel to Moscow with kids and play in the snow

Visa applications complete and accommodations booked, you must now turn your mind to packing for the extreme cold. However, as you will also be visiting restaurants or ballets when you travel to Moscow with your kids, your normal hiking gear may not cut the mustard. It is the indoor/outdoor transition that makes city packing harder.

When we traveled to Moscow in February, the forecast was for lows of -20 C. No matter when you travel to Moscow, first check the Moscow weather averages . Although our children are pretty skinny, they were still able to roll in the snow to their heart’s content with the following gear:

Here is What We Brought

  • Waterproof socks – These were a recent discovery for me but an invaluable one. Bring them for all the family. Go for mid-shin rather than ankle length.
  • Waterproof Gore-Tex boots – Ankle boots were sufficient for the city snow when combined with waterproof socks, and they looked more acceptable than full on snow boots when indoors.
  • One pair of smart indoor shoes.
  • Thermal layer (top and bottoms) and a fleece layer – Thin layers are more versatile and fit into your bag.
  • Everyone should bring their own daypack for all the clothes you will be taking on and off.
  • Fleece-lined waterproof soft shell trousers – These look almost like normal trousers but keep your legs warm and dry. Full snow trousers would be impractical for walking around shops.
  • Everyday trousers to wear under the waterproof layer – Use these for eating out. The fancier restaurants have extensive subterranean cloakrooms, and you can de-robe and transform into your classy under layer self.
  • Thin merino wool scarf and hat.
  • Gloves – 2 pairs each for after dark when the temperatures plummet and your fingers freeze. At least one waterproof pair for snow-balling.
  • Winter coat – I went for sheepskin, but the rest of the family sported thin–ish ski jackets. The lighter and thinner without sacrificing warmth the better.
  • Photocopies of your passport and visa – There are rumors that police sometimes demand to see your papers, and then they refuse to return them unless you pay them money. The advice we followed was to leave the originals in the hotel, and only carry the copy-documents with you when you are out and about.

4. Learn a Bit of Russian

Use Duo lingo to learn the Russian alphabet, so you can read words like “pizza” on a menu.

5. Practice your Skating for Moscow

We had a couple of goes at home, as we were a bit scared there would be no sides in Gorky Park to hang on to.

6. Plan and Print your Moscow Metro Route

travel to Moscow with kids and use the metro

Make sure you use the Moscow Metro . The stations are works of art in their own right, filled with golden frescoes, fancy lighting and communist era sculptures .

If, like us, you neither speak nor read Russian, take the precaution of using Google Maps to plan all Metro journeys in the comfort of your own house, and print these off to take with you. Wifi is not always available when you are underground, so be prepared.

When you travel to Moscow with kids, let alone anyone, reading station names as they whip by is virtually impossible. By counting their number and with a quick scan of the first few characters, you can check them off against your map, and you stand a fighting chance of getting off at the right stop.

7. Plan Your Food

With a family, the need to eat is never more than a couple of hours away, so planning your food is quite important. While you’re in Moscow check out some of the local food to try in Russia . Also, book hotels that include breakfast, and stay in a hotel near a shopping centre. Then, at least it is only lunch you have to worry about. We went for the Novotel Moscow City Hotel , which is right next to a mall, a snowy park and a Metro stop. They allow four in a family room, and breakfast is free for under 15’s.

TIP : Food courts are good for picture menus and pointing based ordering.

Our Moscow Itinerary

TIP : Do not start your travel to Moscow with kids trip on a Monday – most of Moscow is closed.

Day 1 –   Lenin’s Tomb / GUM / Kitai Gorod / Kremlin at Night

All of these activities are accessible from Red Square, as this is the epicentre of Moscow. Arriving from a hotel in the monochrome world of the suburbs, you will be blown away by the riot of colour in the square.

Morning – Lenin’s Tomb

infant travel system for twins

Cost : Free!

Location : Red Square

Opening Hours : 10 -1pm Tue-Thur and Sat (not public holidays)

Timing : Allow up to an hour (including queuing)

The queue for the security check for Lenin’s Tomb takes about 30 minutes. You then make your way past the tombs of the former Russian Presidents, lined up along the outside wall of the Kremlin. As you enter the mausoleum, warn your children not to speak, or they will be severely shushed by one of the armed guards. Do not laugh.

Shuffle your way past the embalmed body (not taking any photographs) and out the other side straight on to Red Square. The children can then impress their friends by telling them they have seen a dead body.

Lunch – Red Square (outside) or GUM (inside)

A family enjoying Russian blinis in Red Square in Moscow

For lunch, if you are giving up vitamins for your holidays, eat a traditional Russian blini (chocolate pancake) at one of the stalls in Red Square , or head inside to a café in GUM , the largest department store in Russia, next door. The name “GUM” comes from Glavny Universalny Magazin (“Main Department Store”), formerly Gosudarstvenny Universalny Magazin (“State Department Store”).

Afternoon – GUM

Russian Dolls tumbling from the ceiling in GUM

A good place to be indoors and warm up, this historic state shopping centre runs the length of Red Square, and it contains 200 (centrally heated) shops. Built in the 1890’s, it was nationalized after the revolution, and now it appears to be flirting with capitalism. It has a particularly impressive glass roof, and many high-end boutiques and cafes. Spend an hour or so exploring and having a coffee overlooking Red Square, and then head back outside.

Kitai Gorod

Travel to Moscow with Kids and view the Colorful toppings on the buildings of Kitai Gorod

As the sun lowers in the sky, explore the back streets behind Red Square, an area known as Kitai Gorod , where fondant fancy pink and white buildings glow in the evening light.

Kremlin at Night

Travel to Moscow with kids and see St Basil’s Cathedral by night - like a fairytale sultan’s hat

Then, head back into Red Square to see the Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral magically illuminated at night.

Day 2 – Crown Jewels – Kremlin Armory / St Basil’s cathedral

The Golden cathedrals inside the Kremlin in Moscow

Cost : R1000 (under 16’s are free) for the Kremlin and the Armory

Location :  By the Kremlin walls, next to The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Opening Hours : [Museum opening hours 10:00 to 17:00] [Ticket office 9:30 to 16:30] [Closed – Thursdays]

Timing : Allow 2 hours for the armory and up to an hour for the cathedrals

Buying tickets is complicated. You can buy adult tickets up to 17 days in advance, but they do not guarantee entry for free ticket holders. Childrens’ free tickets are only available 45 minutes before each “session”, and tickets for the following session are only available after the current one has ended. All the rules are here .

In essence, to ensure you all get in together, arrive 45 minutes before opening time, and book all of your paid and free tickets at the same time.

Join the security queue for a bag search at the entrance, and then walk through into a world of golden topped white cathedrals. You enter the armory by way of a small door just on your left as you go in.

Here you will find the main event – the amazing Russian Crown Jewels. No photos are allowed inside but you will see Fabergé eggs, a fleet of royal carriages, thrones and gowns, 4 foot high jewel encrusted tomes, huge silver goblets and tigers – all brought to life through a free English audio guide.

If the crown jewels were not impressive enough for you, consider checking out some of these best Instagram sites in Moscow .

Afterwards, wander around the beautiful mosaiced edifices, and check out the tomb of Ivan the Terrible in the Archangel Cathedral.  (Under 14s are not allowed in The Great Bell tower.)

No food is available in the Kremlin, so head 5 minutes round the corner to a stall in Red Square or into GUM – depending on your budget and the weather.

Afternoon – St Basil’s Cathedral

Stripy, swirly, snow topped St Basil’s Cathedral while traveling to Moscow with kids

Cost : R500 (free for under 16’s)

Opening Hours : Check them out here .

Timing : 1 to 2 hours

Circumnavigate the incredible outside, looking up at the impossibly stripy and colorful domes, before exploring the golden interior of St. Basil’s Cathedral . Again, there is an English audio guide available.

Day 3 – Moscow Zoo / Gorky Park

An Arctic Wolf in the Moscow Zoo – right at home

Cost : R600 (children up to 17 free)

Location : 30 minutes from Red Square by Metro

Opening Hours : Open daily 9AM-5PM

Timing : Allow about 2 hours

In the winter you pretty much get the zoo to yourself. It was also a real bonus so see it knee deep in the snow. Extremely fluffy snow cats, mountain goats and arctic wolves looked right at home. The monkeys looked a long way from it, and the bears appeared to be hibernating. I did feel sorry for the creatures in the antipodean section.

There are plenty of indoor enclosures to escape the cold and lots of big animals to entertain the kids – giraffes, wolverines, musk oxen and elephants.

Most of the food stalls are closed in winter, but there is an indoor café serving hot drinks, cake and snacks inside the zoo.

Afternoon – Gorky Park

Tubing in Gorky Park when you travel to Moscow with kids

Cost : Tubing – ~R200, Skating – R100-R500 depending on the time

Location : 25 minutes by Metro from Red Square

Opening Hours : 10AM-3PM & 5PM-11PM Tue-Sun

Timing : As long as you’d like!

Gorky Park fronts the frozen Moscow river. Walk along its banks, and then fly on a rubber ring at speed in the tubing zone.

After dark, hire some skates, and take your place amongst pirouetting Russian experts on the largest, neon lit, disco ice rink in Europe. We were pleased to find that most of the pathways did have sides for clinging on to whilst finding our ice feet.

Family ice skating session in Gorky Park

A maze of park paths are transformed into an icy track that leads past towering illuminated cubes, walk-in-with-your-skates-on cafes and hot chocolate booths.

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “disco lights” while traveling to Moscow with kids

Optional Moscow Extras When You Travel to Moscow With Kids

  • If you have more time, tickets to the Bolshoi Ballet are much cheaper than at home (note that under 16’s are not allowed to all performances).
  • For a spot of decadence, try the lunch menu at Café Pushkin , a former nobleman’s house, and dine amongst people in ball gowns in one of their themed rooms – a wooden panel pharmacy or antique filled library.
  • Consider catching the train to the equally beautiful St Petersburg, as covering more in one trip will save you the bother of another visa application for a return journey.

Kids playing out in a Russian park (Krasnaya)

Any travel to Moscow with kids is an off the beaten path adventure and certainly so in winter time. And although English is not widely spoken, the medium of mime does get you a long way. So, pack your bags, make sure you plan ahead, and craft your own Moscow family adventure!

If on the off chance this doesn’t all sound good to you, and if you’re looking for something that is the polar opposite of traveling to Moscow with kids in the winter time (pun intended), consider checking out this family friendly Bali off the beaten path itinerary . But no matter what you do, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them below.

Kids and Family in Moscow

infant travel system for twins

This guide was written prior to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine and is therefore not reflective of the current situation. Travel to Russia is currently not advisable due to the area's volatile political situation.

Expats moving to Moscow with children should prepare for a sizeable challenge. Conquering the cold weather and the intimidating transport system with little ones requires some real courage.

That said, there are plenty of child-friendly activities available in the city. Several expat support systems exist to help calm any parent's nerves against unanticipated stress.

Family life in Moscow

The long months of freezing temperatures in Moscow inevitably affect family life and limit the outdoor activities one can enjoy. Few Russian families and children can be seen out on the streets in winter unless they are heavily bundled up. That said, ice skating is a common activity for children and adults alike in winter.

Traffic in Moscow can be a real problem. People drive fast and there are few above-ground places to cross larger roads. So, if using a pram, this means tackling stairs to enter and exit the pedestrian-friendly underpass. Baby carriers may be a preferred option.

The metro is extensive, cheap and easy to use but, again, expats should bear in mind the presence of stairs. Once familiar with the most common metro stops, parents will be able to choose those with no stairs and make life a little easier.

Many expats hire a driver to avoid these issues and to make it easier to get around in freezing temperatures. Expats should try to negotiate this as part of an employment package, if possible.

Best places to live in Moscow with kids

When searching for  accommodation in Moscow , expats with children should think carefully. Many expats with kids, especially those with young children, choose to live in one of the gated expat communities just outside the city. In these areas, it’s possible to get a house and plenty of green space, but exposure to real Russian life will be minimal.

Alternatively, expats can live in an apartment in the city centre. Although this does not offer a garden, Moscow has a lot of green spaces and parks that are child-friendly. Apartment living in Moscow is typically better for expats with teenagers or children who would be interested in enjoying any of the rich cultural activities on offer in Moscow’s centre.

Entertainment for kids in Moscow

As noted, frost-free months of the year are scarce in Moscow. As a result, most of the entertainment options in the city are indoor activities. When the sun does come out, there are some great outdoor spaces to take advantage of.

There are plenty of parks in and around Moscow’s city centre, and it's also possible to find small playgrounds, boulevards and smaller gardens dotted about. Gorky Park is a big, centrally located park for cycling, rollerblading or running, as well as having various rides for amusement. Hermitage Gardens is a perfect place for kids to play. Many expats meet up here in summer and spring.

Shopping malls are a great way to get out of the house in winter. Many malls have play areas, bowling clubs, cinemas and other activities to keep kids entertained. For a real taste of Russia, expats should try ice skating on one of the frozen ponds.
