Your loved one is going to be over the moon about the surprise vacation you’ve planned just for them, but how do you reveal the surprise? Luckily, there are tons of ways you can surprise someone with a trip and make the reveal unique to them! In this article, we’ll fill you in on the best, easiest, and most creative ways to gift your partner, parent, kids, or friend the trip of a lifetime. What are you waiting for? Keep reading because we have a trip to reveal!

Things You Should Know

  • Create a scavenger hunt or play a balloon popping game to get kids excited about discovering their gift.
  • Watch a movie featuring the surprise destination or dine at a restaurant specific to the culture they’ll be experiencing to surprise an adult.
  • Reveal the secret at the airport the day of the trip to give kids the ultimate surprise.

A puzzle of your destination is a fun way to surprise kids or adults.

  • Order custom puzzles through sites like Shutterfly and Collage.
  • Consider adding a message to your puzzle’s image like, “Surprise! You’re going to Hawaii!” or “Happy Birthday! Mickey’s waiting for you!”
  • If the puzzle comes in a box with the puzzle’s image on it, put it in a blank box or bag, so your loved one won’t know what they’re revealing until the puzzle is complete.

Treasure hunt

Let kids of all ages uncover clues and search for their ultimate gift.

  • Theme your clues around the destination. For example, if they’re going to the beach, hide clues near a pair of sandals, under popsicles in the freezer, or beside the pool.
  • Make the final clue their ticket or a message saying something like, “You’re going to Disney World!”
  • Keep the clues age appropriate. If the vacation is for a younger child, help them read the clues or use pictures to describe where the next clue is.

Daily riddle

Keep a curious mind guessing with clues leading up to their departure.

  • Write the riddles on notes to stick randomly around the house for them to find.
  • Text them a clue in the middle of the day to lift their spirits.
  • Make the riddles as easy or difficult as you like; just keep your loved one’s age in mind.
  • One of your riddle clues might be, “I measure time, I build castles, and I’m small enough to fit in a spoon. What am I?”

Make a video revealing the trip your loved one has to scan.

  • Create a QR code easily on website like QR Code Generator , QRCode Monkey , or beconstac .
  • If you don’t want to make a video yourself, no problem! Link the QR code to a travel brochure or documentary featuring the destination.

Box in a box in a box

Hide the tickets in endless packaging to make kids and adults curious.

  • No boxes, no problem! Try this same idea but use various sizes of envelopes instead.

Hide the ticket in another gift

Lower expectations by placing the trip location in a mundane gift.

  • Place the ticket in the fold of a piece of clothing, so they’ll have to unfold the item to find it.
  • Slide the ticket in between the pages of a self-help book.
  • Tape the ticket to the underside of a box of chocolates.

Write a message on a cake

Reveal the big surprise when your loved one blows out their candles.

  • “Happy Birthday, Abby! P.S. You’re going to London!”
  • “Pack your bags! The Eiffel Tower is waiting!”
  • Consider theming the cake around the destination, even if it doesn’t go with the party’s theme.

Ask a friend or family member for help

Fill in another loved one to make the reveal special.

  • Try getting your loved one’s favorite celebrity or influencer involved using Cameo (a personalized video service). Simply pay the celebrity or influencer through the service, and ask them to reveal the trip in their message.

Gift a travel essential

Luggage, passports, or snorkel gear can help reveal your big surprise.

  • Try wrapping up a series of items for the trip separately but make the final present a note about how they’ll need everything for an upcoming getaway.

Cook a meal from the destination

A country-specific food is a delicious way to reveal a trip to a partner.

  • For instance, if you’re taking them to Italy, try making pasta from scratch and serving wine imported from the country.
  • If cooking isn’t your thing, take them to a restaurant featuring the country or culture’s cuisine.

Balloon pop

Hide a note about your getaway in a single balloon for kids to find.

  • Fill the balloons with confetti or sparkles for extra fun.
  • This game is best to play with children of elementary age and older as sitting on balloons could cause a few boo-boos.

Movie reveal

Plan a movie...

  • Greece: Mamma Mia
  • France: Ratatouille
  • Scotland: Brave
  • London: Love, Actually
  • New York: West Side Story

Reveal the destination at the airport

Spring the news on kids at the airport for the ultimate surprise.

  • Consider keeping your kids guessing even after you get to the airport. This way, they’ll have to use context clues and observational skills to “crack the code.”

7 creative ways to reveal a surprise vacation

Updated: Dec 14, 2023

The surprise vacation has been planned. The itinerary is fixed. The flight tickets and hotels have been booked. And now you just cannot wait to reveal it to your family/ parents/ partner or whoever you are gifting this surprise trip! Planning a secret holiday is a lot of hard work (don’t we know that!), and so the surprise trip reveal deserves to be as fantastic as the holiday you’ve planned. And trust us, if you are planning a week-long vacation, it is ideal to announce the vacation a few days or even weeks in advance, to give enough time to your loved ones to plan their schedule around the given dates. So here are some creative vacation reveal ideas that will be as fun as the actual trip!

surprised and happy couple on a Blind Experiences holiday

Surprise birthday trip reveal

You could choose a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary to make the grand announcement. For instance, if you are planning to send your parents on a surprise vacation to celebrate their 50th golden wedding anniversary, you could pick one of their birthdays to reveal the upcoming trip. The birthday gift would be a clue to where they are going! 1. A customized cake You can bake or arrange a cake based on the theme of your destination. If your secret is a safari holiday to Kenya or Namibia, how about a jungle or safari-theme cake ? Or you could plan a “photo rolling” or “pull-out” cake where the birthday boy or girl gets to pull out a roll of photos or clues from the cake that will reveal the big surprise!

2. Gift a travel essential Birthdays by default involve gifting. So, a creative way to reveal your surprise trip is to gift a travel essential that would also double up as a hint towards your chosen destination. How about gifting a travel wallet ? You could slip in a calendar card, with the dates of the trip crossed out to indicate that those days are “booked for a vacation”. If you are planning an adventurous trip with your partner that may include camping out, how about you gift a camping tent and leave your beloved guessing about the destination 😉 Also read: Best way to plan a surprise trip: 4 tips to gift the perfect holiday !

Cool ideas to reveal a surprise trip to your husband/ wife

There is nothing cooler than planning a surprise to reveal a surprise trip! And when you’re planning a secret vacation for your spouse, you have so many interesting ways to announce your surprise.

3. Let a movie reveal the surprise Plan a comfortable Friday evening movie night at home with your husband/ wife andpick a movie that has been shot in or around your secret holiday destination! If your destination is Italy, you can build up the suspense to your reveal, by watching the beautiful movie, Under the Tuscan Sun , that showcase the beautiful landscape of rural Tuscany and the charming Italian lifestyle. If your secret destination is Iceland, how about you watch The Secret Life of Walter Mitty that puts the best of this Nordic country on display. You can place a note at the bottom of your popcorn tub, that reads, “Isn’t the movie storyline and location fantastic? How about we shoot our story there?” or something equally cheesy like a surprise trip reveal poem 😉

“Fun-tastic” ways to announce a surprise family trip to your kids

Some of our favourite surprise trip reveal ideas involve announcing the holiday to the little ones. It does not take a lot of effort to keep a surprise from them, yet it is incredibly gratifying to see their starry eyes light up with joy when they get to know!

4. Send them on a treasure hunt Make your children earn their surprise gift by scattering treasures (clues) all over the house that will lead them to the final clue that reveals the destination or the fact that they will soon go on a trip! You can draft each clue in such a way that their theme is in sync with the holiday place. For instance, if you are planning to take the family to Disney world or any other amusement theme park, you could write your clues accordingly: “ Brace yourself for a bumpy ride. Find your next clue where eggs are fried! ” (Hide the clue in the kitchen near the cooking stove) “ An adventure awaits, are you ready? Find your next clue where you study! ” (Hide the clue in the kids’ room near their study table/ school stuff) 5. Make them solve a surprise trip reveal puzzle Let the kids rack their brains a little to discover the surprise holiday that awaits them! You can draw or print out a picture that either gives a clue or announces your vacation destination directly. Now cut this up into smaller pieces – the more pieces, the more puzzling! Let them put together the entire puzzle and watch the delight on their faces!

Romantic ways to reveal a surprise beach vacation to your boyfriend/ girlfriend

7. Surprise within a surprise within a surprise... When the Blind Experiences team plans a "blind travel experience" for our customers, we put together a bunch of envelopes - anywhere between 5 to 10 envelopes depending on the duration of your vacation! We allow you to open only the first envelope so that you can discover where you’re heading on your blind experience! Then, you have to simply enjoy and savour every moment of your trip. Gifting a Surprise Vacation

The past few years my husband and I have been trying to focus more on experiences than things. If we had our way, we would give each other and our kids, vacations as gifts for every occasion. The best part about giving someone a surprise vacation is seeing their face when they realize where they’re going. The tough part though is finding a cute and fun way to give them that surprise trip because it’s hard to wrap the Eiffel Tower.

Surprise Vacation Reveal Ideas

Surprise vacation reveal ideas by Memory in the Making

You’re awesome! You decided to book a vacation or local staycation experience for someone and now it’s time to do your surprise vacation reveal! Researching and making travel arrangements is already quite a lot of work, phew that can be an understatement! I’m typically the go-to person in the family to make all of the travel arrangements and itinerary. So, I equally both feel your pain AND share your excitement!

I have several surprise vacation reveal ideas for you that range from the simplest solutions to gift a vacation, all the way up to creating a major WOW factor! Before I get into my 8 creative ways to reveal a surprise vacation (below) , lets talk about how to gift experiences and not blow it!!

The Gift of Lifelong Memories

Is it just me or do 9 times out of 10 people put things on their gift wish lists, yet 9 times out of 10 enjoying experiences and making memories is way better than some thing ?

Doesn’t matter if it’s Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, milestones, or other celebrations, everyone’s guilty of putting a thing down on their wish list. Don’t get me wrong, some things could be bad a** and you would be super excited to open the present up or reward yourself by buying something. That’s cool! But…

Are your kids anything like mine and spoiled to death? Don’t know what to gift the person who has everything? That’s why I spend most of my energy thinking about cool experience gift ideas. Vacations are the perfect opportunity for quality time and to create lasting, lifelong memories!

"It's not just making travel plans, it's gifting memories of a lifetime!" by @meminthemaking

Now, lets get your next Memory in the Making!

Start with the Bucket Lists

Starting with their bucket lists is your safest best, and I’ll discuss more about why below.

But first, I’ll be honest. It’s sooooo much easier to open up Etsy or Amazon and search “anniversary gifts for husband” and add something to your cart. Being super thoughtful and planning a surprise vacation requires a lot more time, effort and energy. But the reward is definitely so much sweeter! There are many common excuses we come up with that I cover in my other post, Experience Gift Ideas for Families .

In the future, one way to help yourself out creatively is to encourage everyone to think about and share with you their bucket list of experiences, travel destinations, and even their Concert Bucket List , too! <<This is my personal fav that I recommend you and your crew fill out my free concert bucket list journal ! Ridiculously fun! I frequently coordinate travel plans with bands I’d like to see at different venues across the United States!

Finally, the last thing you are intending is make someone uncomfortable or stressed by giving them the gift of travel. By uncomfortable I mean, what if they don’t want to go there? Or what if they don’t want to use all of their vacation days for YOUR dream trip? Imposing stress on them would also suck. They could become stressed (especially if you don’t clearly disclose your intentions to cover all/certain expenses) and panic could set in. Meals, excursions, new clothing needed, tips, passport fees, etc. all can add up. If you choose something off of their bucket lists, at least you know they will be thrilled with your thoughtfulness and excitement to make one of THEIR dreams come true! Now, you just don’t want to blow the surprise trip reveal!

Don’t Blow It!

You’re obviously looking to go through a lot of time effort and energy to make this a surprise trip reveal super fun! So don’t blow it!! Here are a few great tips on how to gift a vacation from The Points Guy:

  • Don’t use frequent flyer numbers in the booking or they will get an email from the airline or hotel!
  • Use an incognito browser window so you search and browser history doesn’t accidentally spill the beans!
  • If they need a new passport, make sure there is ample time to get it in enough time!
  • More examples in his full article: How to Give a Surprise Trip .

Next, this article by Lost on the Route is a fabulous resource for everything to consider! He thoughtfully explains How to Gift a Surprise Trip and Don’t Mess Up . Some examples include:

  • Vacation time
  • Think 360-degrees about all costs
  • Making sure your present is appropriate and they’ll accept it
  • Documents needed
  • Leaving space for freedom
  • and more! Read more for all the details.

At this point, if you’re balking at the idea of planning a whole vacation for someone, don’t sweat it! Remember, they have NO IDEA you were considering this so there’s nothing to feel bad about. Obviously, you’re digging the idea of an experience vs. a thing, so head over to my other posts for tons more experience gift ideas and date ideas for married couples to mix it up ! Or if you just want to scale back the travel a notch, make the trip a seriously unforgettable local stay cation instead. You’ll find exactly what you need in my staycation planning guide ! Check it out or save this Pin for later. >>

Now, let’s get to the fun part! The big surprise trip reveal!

8 Creative Ways to Reveal a Surprise Vacation

Below, I’ll go into greater detail on how to stir up excitement for the trip! Here’s an overview of 8 creative ways to reveal a surprise vacation:

  • Write in a card
  • Print out a flyer or itinerary with details
  • Print a QR code with link
  • Gift or gift basket with items for the trip
  • Make a video slideshow
  • Tricky wrapping or clues
  • Wrap something that goes along with the theme
  • Setup a vignette display

Write in a Card

The easiest option, and a perfectly acceptable option is to write in a card and then talk to them about all the trip’s details. Bonus points: have the card match the theme of the trip such as a beach with flip flops or the Eiffel Tower. Shopping on Etsy for cards is my fav because there are so many options no matter what the occasion!

The only catch to only writing the destination in the card, is if there’s more to it. I’ve found it easier to give them some details to take with them so they can look further into the hotel, activities, restaurants, excursions, etc. on their own later.

A solution for that is to have a list of links ready to text or email to them after they open their card. A link to the hotel, restaurant menu, event you bought tickets to, etc.

On the contrary, this is a great idea if you aren’t ready to book this trip without talking to them first. With this flexibility in mind you could write in 2 destinations to choose from. Or write in 2 dates to choose from, and immediately put it on your calendars so it doesn’t get dragged out and never actually happen.

Another consideration is to stick their passport in the card as a little creative touch. Next, I’ll show you how easy it is for you to one-up writing in a card.

Print a Surprise Vacation Reveal Flyer or Itinerary

What do I mean about creating a vacation flyer?  Simply put, print an 8.5 x 11 inch page with all of the known details of your trip. Here are a few different examples of some I’ve done in the past.

Bahamas family vacation flyer for surprise vacation reveal

What to Include on the Flyer

Obviously an itinerary is pretty self-explanatory as far as the format goes. Ready-made templates will help guide how you lay that out, very easily. But, there are a few key bits of information you may want to add in. Examples include:

  • Dates of the trip
  • # of Days / # of Nights away
  • Name of accommodations (hotel, cruise ship, VRBO, campground, etc.)
  • Type of hotel room (suite, standard king, double bed, ocean view, garden view, etc.)
  • Excursions or activity examples available to decide on or pre-planned (swim with dolphins, kayaking, zip lining, shopping at a mall, hiking, casino, spa appointments, etc.)
  • Tickets to an event (concert, play, etc.)
  • Restaurant reservations
  • Resort or hotel amenities
  • Who’s going on the trip
  • All expenses paid or specifically what the gift includes
  • Pictures and graphics representative of the vacation (hotel, scenery, excursions, food, etc.)

Next, lets talk about the easiest way to create this surprise vacation reveal flyer or itinerary!

Try Canva for Free

With no design experience, you can create tons amazing visual content using FREE Canva . In a few clicks and no credit required, you be setup with an account. There are so many canned templates to choose from and they already have the proper sizes associated with them. It’s seriously too easy.

First, create your account and get started!

Create a Design

Second, scroll through all of the different project options or click the Create a design button on the top right. Search for “flyer” and you’ll see a few size options to choose from. I typically would choose Flyer (Portrait 8.5 x 11 inch) .

Immediately you’ll see a bunch of different templates appear along the left side of the screen. I almost always start my projects with a canned template. It’s a great starting point and a huge time saver. A great start is to search for “vacation” or “travel itinerary”.

For additional training from Canva, visit their Help page and learn every trick you could think of within a few seconds.

Side note: have you seen my other article on how I created my daughter’s birthday invitation using Canva in less than 5 minutes ? Check it out if you’re curious! The amount of other fun things you can do with Canva is endless!

Printing the Flyer

There are a few options for printing the flyer or itinerary. Obviously, if you have a good printer at home (with ink, ha!) that is the quickest option. Download the flyer as a .pdf for best printing results.

Second, have it professionally printed. If you want to make it more fancy or don’t have a printer available, a very quick option is to upload it to a local Walgreens or FedEx Kinkos. They can typically print it out in an 8×10 inch size with a glossy, photo paper. Plus you can typically pick it up in as little as an hour!

Printing Tip: If you know you’ll decide to choose professionally photo-size printing, use the quick “Resize” option in Canva to adjust your flyer to an 8×10 inch size. May need to slightly tinker with the format but it will ensure that nothing gets cut off. Also, consider a little “bleed” room that will get cut off. Don’t place critical information right up against any of the edges of the flyer to be safe. In this case, download it as .png image.

Savings Tip: if you are using Walgreens, I have always found that they offer a coupon code online for all photo orders. Typically 50% off! Check out Retailmenot.com here .

Third, and easiest option, is to print directly via Canva. If you have a few days, with a couple clicks you you can order in a matte or gloss finish for a reasonable price and free delivery to your doorstep.

Gifting the Surprise Vacation Reveal Flyer or Itinerary

Lastly, wrap the flyer in a shirt gift box or throw it into a gift bag. Bonus points: wrapping paper or gift bag match the theme of the trip!

Next, I’ll show you how you can take a little more of techy approach in no time!

Print a QR Code to Reveal a Surprise Vacation

Technology can be great way to simplify or amplify this surprise! With an easy search for “ QR Code Generator ” you can very quickly, for free get your own QR code for the person to scan with their phone. What URL this QR code points to is another story! Let your creativity run wild here. Some ideas to get your wheels spinning include a link to:

  • The location’s tourism website (such as: Pure Michigan or Nashville’s Visit Music City )
  • The resort’s website
  • A YouTube video
  • A song clue (“Margaritaville” for a trip to Key West, FL)
  • A video you make (see a video or slideshow section below)
  • An invite to a shared, interactive, itinerary organizer on the free Wanderlog app

Wanderlog is a phenomenal free travel app that I now use for ALL of my travel plans. Keep an eye out for my post about how to use this app soon! Subscribe to my Memory in the Making blog now so you don’t miss a beat, plus get subscriber perks:

Next, get some ideas for physical gifts and when it makes sense to bother buying things for the trip, too.

Gift or Gift Basket

Travel as a gift is certainly plenty ! However, creating a themed gift basket of sorts is a cute option.

I only recommend this idea if you know you’ll be buying something for them anyway. What do I mean by that? Your kids would be a great example if you know they need a new swimsuit and flip flops. Or a pretty dress for a family picture. Maybe your husband could use a new pair of sunglasses. Or all the adults get a themed koozie. You get the idea!

Disclaimer: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links, meaning that if you click through & make a purchase, I will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.  Thank you for your support!

It doesn’t have to be a “basket” either. You can put items in a piece of luggage , a carry-on bag, a toiletry bag, a wet bag, or just a regular gift bag. Here’s my favorite pack of luggage tags , great for traveling with family! Lastly, I’m absolutely obsessed with my wet bags and beach bag from ALOHA Collection . They’re super great quality. I have bought MANY in different sizes for myself, kids, and my husband!

luggage

Get a laugh out of it!

Creating confusion to mess with them can be quite entertaining! For example, fill a gift bag with items like travel-sized deodorant or other lame toiletries that you have them open first. You’ll certainly get a funny look. Then let the cat out of the bag with the surprise trip reveal!

Make a Video for a Surprise Vacation Reveal

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Instead of printing something, grab a bunch of pictures from websites, social media pages and add them into a presentation. Many people are great at creating videos these days because of social media and have cool apps to do this on. A few easy options that come to my mind are:

  • A good ‘ol traditional PowerPoint
  • Search for other free video making apps here

The family staycation we did, I used iMovie and text the video out to the adults and showed the kids. Super fun! See my post, 5 Steps to Plan the Ultimate Staycation for more time savers and pro planning tips!

Now, lets jump into the next surprise vacation reveal ideas!

Tricky Wrapping or Clues

Ultimate Surprise Vacation Reveal: Setup a Vignette Display

My dad has been the king of this surprise vacation reveal idea over the years! At Christmastime, he sometimes will gift us a big family vacation. I can attest as the gift receiver, this is always a lot of fun for us adults and his grandkids! Plus it builds up the group’s anticipation big time. Perfect surprise trip reveal for a group family vacation!

Here’s a perfect example. For a ski trip, a display could include items like ski hats, gloves, and goggles as gifts. Sprinkle around some fake snow on the table and a few other cold-weather decorations to create a winter wonderland vignette.

Bonus points: also create that slideshow video (see idea details above) that includes pictures and video clips of the hotel, ski slopes, etc. Have it playing on an iPad as everyone walks into the room!

Talk about WOW factor!!

Thanks Dad!

I absolutely LOVE the idea of creating experiences and making memories in lieu of a “gift.” It’s such a good idea to go over bucket lists with the family to help in your decision on a surprise vacation. Thank you for laying out such wonderful and detailed ideas on how to reveal the surprise vacation….I think the “Scavenger Hunt” idea is the most fun!

Thank you so much Shelly! I’m so glad you enjoyed and got some good stuff out of here. The hotel scavenger hunt is the absolute BEST! Download the free printable to save for your next trip: https://memoryinthemaking.com/hotel-scavenger-hunt-with-freebie-printable/

This is so fun! One time I surprised my husband (then boyfriend) with a road trip to Florida. My sister was living there so I had her take pictures of the beach, etc and send them to me. I put it all together, details and everything, into a “book” (folder with prongs haha). On the last page I put something along the lines of, “So will you go?” Of course he said yes!

Meg, isn’t that the best?! Love it!! We plan trips anyways, so I love making the reveal a special part of the memories too. Why not right?! My personal fav is to download my free Concert Bucket List, compare notes, and then plan a trip to see a band! Or experience a beautiful venue or city you wouldn’t normally go. Grab it here: https://memoryinthemaking.com/concert-bucket-list-journal/ Have a great time getting your next Memory in the Making!

What a cool way to celebrate life! Creating memories instead of “throw away gifts” is THE best!

How To Reveal A Surprise Trip: 5 Ways To Do It Right

surprise trip reveal

Knowing how to reveal a surprise trip is always a difficult situation to be in. The stakes are high for you, because you don’t want your loved one to give you a lukewarm response to your reveal or – even worse – disappointment at their lack of excitement.

The Pressure of Organising Surprise Trips

And disappointment is the last thing you want to hear. You’ve already had to go through a lot of stress in order to plan your surprise trip.

Just the act of scheduling your trip has been a major headache. You had to find a date in both of your diaries, by checking their schedule, all without letting them know why. You might’ve felt anxiety throughout the entire booking process, hoping your friend hasn’t changed their dates.

You’ve also committed money and time into securing your train or plane tickets, your vacation digs, and itinerary, that you can’t back out now. You might’ve gone through doubts surrounding the vacation you’ve chosen, if he/she will enjoy your idea.

You’ve survived all of that and yet still the journey isn’t over. Now you have to figure out how to reveal a surprise trip so the answer you hear is a resounding yes.

A surprise trip is a gift like any other and should be treated in the same way. To help someone want to “open this gift” you want to create an experience that leads up to the reveal. Before we get to those tips, there’s one thing you need to think about first.

When Should You Reveal Your Surprise Trip?

Deciding how to reveal a surprise trip is one thing, but picking the right time is do so is another. You want to reveal close enough to the departure date that the excitement of going is palpable for both of you; but also far enough away so that if you had to postpone, you can get your money back.

Why could a surprise trip be postponed? Well, plans could change for the recipient of your trip. Perhaps they forgot to add things to their schedule/diary. Perhaps they were invited to something only just recently and forgot to mention it.

You want to time your reveal to also give your friend enough time to prepare for the trip. Even if it’s just a weekend away, they will still want to clear their diaries and make sure they have no pending interruptions. You also need to give them time to pack and get travel insurance (unless you’re gifting that as well.)

Ways To Build Up To Your Reveal

As I mentioned before, you want to prime your friend into “open the gift” of your trip, so that when you do the reveal, joy and enthusiasm is the response you get. Here are some ways you can lead into that moment.

Knowing how to reveal a surprise trip well is all about sly games and teasing. If you’re going to a particular location, consider dressing up in clothing items related to the destination. For example, if you’re planning a hiking weekend, wear your hiking gear before meeting your friend. Got a beach setting in mind? Put on your flip flips and shades. Going to Disneyland? Get those Mickey Mouse ears on.

This reveal idea is something that can take place over a few days. If you live with your friend or loved one, you can leave little clues about your trip throughout your house, e.g., destination photos in the bathroom, semblance of a packed bag, photocopies of tickets somewhere. If you don’t live with friends, you can message them with clues or send them sounds and music from the destination you’ve planned; or slip something into their bag.

Cook a meal

Invite your friend to a dinner featuring some of the local cuisine you will be encountering. If you’re not great at cooking, then consider going to a restaurant that specialises in these dishes. You can tell them about your upcoming trip after you’ve both ordered your meal.

Hand them a travel guide

Deciding how to reveal a surprise trip can be as simple as presenting the destination upfront. Find a travel guide for your future trip and fill it with highlighted pages and folded-down corners, before handing it over. Use the guide as a casual talking point before going in with the reveal.

Get them a travel gift

We’re talking something small and affordable here, for example, a neck cushion, a daypack, or clothing items suitable for your vacation.

After you’ve primed your loved one using one of these techniques, casually present your tickets in an envelope by using a line such as like, “Oh, the mailman passed me this urgent letter for you,” or “I got concert tickets for us,” or “is this letter yours?”

Deciding how to reveal a surprise trip is all about subterfuge. Try and relax and have fun with it. I wish you luck with whatever happens.

Book Surprise:

The "Book Surprise" entails gifting someone a book related to a travel destination, with a boarding pass discreetly tucked inside as a bookmark. At first glance, it appears to be a simple literary gift, but on closer inspection, it reveals an upcoming real-life adventure.

Start by selecting a book that resonates with the intended travel destination. This could be a travel guide, a novel set in that location, or even a cultural or historical overview of the place. Purchase one of our boarding pass templates , ensuring all the trip details are on it. Browse through the book to find a section or chapter that might pique the recipient's interest and strategically place the boarding pass there. When gifting the book, you can add a note or hint encouraging them to read or explore its contents. As they flip through the pages, they'll stumble upon the boarding pass, transforming a quiet reading moment into an exciting revelation of an impending journey.

Luggage Reveal:

The "Luggage Reveal" surprise involves gifting someone a new suitcase or travel bag. While the luggage itself might seem like the primary gift, the real surprise awaits inside: a boarding pass detailing an upcoming trip.

Begin by selecting a suitable piece of luggage that fits the recipient's style and travel needs. Inside the luggage, place a few travel essentials or some casual packing to set the scene. Nestled among these items, strategically position the boarding pass so it's visible upon opening but not immediately obvious.

You can also add a travel itinerary or a small travel guide related to the destination for an added touch. When presenting the luggage, you can mention it's for their next adventure or simply let them discover the boarding pass organically. The initial appreciation for the luggage will soon be overshadowed by the exhilaration of finding out about the planned journey.

Destination Dinner:

surprise trip reveal

The "Destination Dinner" surprise revolves around preparing or ordering a meal that showcases the flavors and dishes of a specific travel destination. While the meal offers a sensory journey to that place, the climax of the experience is the discovery of a boarding pass , revealing an upcoming trip to the very location they've just tasted.

To pull off this surprise, start by researching traditional dishes and flavors from the intended travel destination. Depending on your culinary skills and available ingredients, you can either cook the meal yourself or order from a restaurant that offers authentic dishes from that region. Set the ambiance by playing music from the destination or using decor that hints at the locale.

As the meal progresses, save the boarding pass reveal for a special moment. One way to do this is by placing the boarding pass beneath the dessert plate or wrapping it around a themed drink. Alternatively, you can present it at the end of the meal inside a travel brochure or guidebook about the destination. As they savor the flavors of the place, the boarding pass will confirm that they'll soon be experiencing it firsthand, making the entire dinner a tantalizing prelude to the journey ahead.

Travel Kit:

The "Travel Kit Surprise" involves gifting someone a collection of travel essentials, tailored for a journey. While each item in the kit hints at an upcoming adventure, the true revelation is discreetly hidden within: a boarding pass that unveils the details of a forthcoming trip.

To craft this surprise, begin by considering the destination and the type of travel involved. Based on this, gather a set of travel essentials. This could include items like sunscreen for a beach destination, a city map for an urban exploration, a pocket phrasebook for a foreign country, or even altitude sickness pills for a mountainous journey.

Choose a suitable bag or container to hold all the items. Among these essentials, subtly place the boarding pass . It can be tucked into a travel journal , folded within a map, or even attached to one of the items with a note saying "For your next adventure." When presenting the kit, you can add a playful hint like "You might need these soon" or let them discover the boarding pass organically as they explore the contents.

Customized Calendar:

The "Customized Calendar Surprise" involves presenting someone with a uniquely designed calendar filled with photos or hints related to a specific travel destination. As they browse through the months, a particular date stands out, marked with the trip's details. The real gem, however, is the boarding pass concealed within the calendar, confirming the upcoming journey.

To set this surprise in motion, choose a calendar style that fits the recipient's taste, whether it's wall-mounted, desktop, or a planner. Select images that either directly showcase the destination or provide subtle hints about it. These could be famous landmarks, cultural events, or even scenic landscapes. As you assemble the calendar, ensure that the travel date is prominently marked, perhaps with a catchy phrase like "Adventure Awaits!" or "Get Ready to Explore!"Within the trip’s month, discreetly place the boarding pass.

Fashion Surprise:

surprise trip reveal

The "Fashion Surprise" is centered around gifting someone a piece of clothing or accessory that resonates with a specific travel destination. While the attire hints at the vibe of a particular locale, a boarding pass discreetly attached or hidden within the garment reveals the impending journey to that very place.

Choose an article of clothing or accessory emblematic of the destination, such as a Hawaiian shirt for a tropical getaway or a beret for a trip to France. Ensure the item is suitable for the recipient's taste and size. Attach the boarding pass discreetly, perhaps on the tag or folded inside a pocket. When presenting the item, you can casually mention it might come in handy soon. As they inspect their new attire, the hidden boarding pass will unveil the upcoming adventure, merging fashion with the thrill of travel.

Daily Tasks Surprise:

The "Daily Tasks Surprise" involves sneaking in the travel reveal into the recipient's routine activities. The boarding pass , symbolizing an upcoming trip, is discreetly placed in everyday items or spots they frequently use, turning a mundane task into an exhilarating discovery moment.

Identify several daily tasks or routines the recipient follows, such as having their morning coffee, checking their office desk, or putting on their shoes. Choose one or multiple moments to plant the boarding pass. For instance, you could slip the boarding pass at the bottom of their coffee mug, inside their laptop case, or within the pages of their daily planner. The key is subtlety. As they go about their day, the unexpected find amidst their routine tasks will not only surprise but also break the monotony with the promise of an exciting journey ahead.

Photo Memories:

The "Photo Memories Surprise" is centered on a nostalgic journey through past memories, using photographs. By presenting a photo album or digital slideshow filled with cherished moments, the recipient is led through a visual timeline. But the surprise twist is the addition of a boarding pass , symbolizing not just past memories but an upcoming adventure.

Compile a selection of memorable photos, ranging from childhood snaps to recent events. Arrange them in a chronological or thematic manner within a physical photo album or digital slideshow. As the recipient approaches the end, include a photo that hints at the upcoming destination—perhaps a famous landmark or a scenic shot of the location. Behind this photo or as the concluding slide, place or display the boarding pass. When presenting, simply invite them to take a walk down memory lane. The blend of nostalgia with the revelation of a new travel memory waiting to be made creates a heartwarming and exhilarating experience.

Mail Surprise:

surprise trip reveal

The "Mail Surprise" concept leverages the excitement of receiving a personal letter or package. Within a seemingly ordinary piece of mail, be it a letter, postcard, or parcel, lies the hidden gem: a boarding pass indicating an upcoming trip. The unsuspecting recipient, expecting regular mail, is met with the thrilling prospect of a new adventure.

First, decide on the type of mail—whether it's a handwritten letter, a themed postcard, or a small package. If opting for a letter, craft a heartfelt message leading up to the travel reveal. For a postcard, choose an image related to the destination, adding a playful hint on the back. If sending a package, include some small travel-related items or souvenirs . In each scenario, ensure the boarding pass is cleverly tucked within, waiting to be discovered. Address the mail to your own home, allowing the recipient to experience the joy of a personal delivery.

Bucket List:

The "Bucket List Surprise" is built on the anticipation of fulfilling personal dreams and aspirations. By presenting the recipient with a curated list of exciting experiences or destinations they've expressed interest in, they're given a roadmap of adventures to come. The pinnacle of this list, however, is not just a written wish, but a tangible boarding pass confirming one of these dreams is about to become reality.

Start by compiling a list of experiences or destinations the recipient has mentioned or shown interest in over time. This can range from witnessing the Northern Lights to learning to tango in Argentina. Craft this list on a beautifully designed paper or in a journal , adding images or quotes for added flair. As they reach the end of the list, include an entry that corresponds to the upcoming trip. Next to this entry, or tucked behind the list if it's physical, place the boarding pass.

Chill Time:

The "Chill Time Surprise" taps into the tranquility of relaxation moments, whether it's a laid-back evening on the balcony, a cozy indoor reading session, or simply unwinding with some music. In the midst of this serene setting, a boarding pass is subtly introduced, transitioning the calm moment into a wave of exhilarating travel anticipation.

Determine a setting that the recipient associates with relaxation and "chill" moments. It could be their favorite armchair, a special corner of the house, or even a cozy blanket they often use. Prepare the scene, perhaps with some ambient music, soft lighting, or a freshly brewed cup of tea or coffee. Within this setup, discreetly position the boarding pass. This could be achieved by tucking the pass inside a book they're currently reading, placing it under their tea or coffee coaster, or even folding it within the pages of a magazine they enjoy.

Photo Frame:

The "Photo Frame Surprise" revolves around the sentimentality of cherished moments captured in photographs. By presenting a new photo frame, which at first appears to simply house a memorable picture or a hint at a destination, an added layer of surprise awaits: a boarding pass discreetly positioned, revealing an upcoming journey to the depicted location.

Select a photo frame that aligns with the recipient's aesthetic preferences. Choose an image that either directly showcases the travel destination or offers a subtle hint about it. This could be a picturesque landscape, a famous landmark, or even a candid shot from a previous trip. Behind this primary photo, securely place the boarding pass so it remains hidden from immediate view. When presenting the framed photo, position it in a location of significance, such as a mantle, bedside table, or prominent wall space. Encourage the recipient to take a closer look or share a story related to the photo, leading them to discover the boarding pass behind it.

Message in a Bottle:

surprise trip reveal

The "Message in a Bottle Surprise" draws inspiration from age-old tales of sea-bound letters and mysterious discoveries. By presenting a decorative bottle with a rolled-up note inside, the recipient is transported into a narrative of intrigue. However, the note isn't just any message—it's a boarding pass , indicating an upcoming voyage, turning a tale of fantasy into imminent reality.

Begin by selecting a bottle that has a vintage or nautical appeal, evoking feelings of adventure and exploration. Roll the boarding pass into a tight scroll, securing it with a ribbon or wax seal for added effect. Place the scroll inside the bottle and cork it. Depending on the setting, you can present the bottle directly, or for added drama, place it in a location for the recipient to "stumble upon," like on a beach walk or during a garden picnic.

April 27, 2021 //  by  Mckensie Shiner //   Leave a Comment

Planning to book a surprise Disney trip to gift to someone in your life? Then, keep reading! It’s everyone’s dream to be surprised with a trip to Walt Disney World. The only tricky part is, how will you tell the person the news? Will you give a countdown calendar to your significant other or tell your kids they’re visiting relatives out of town?

Whoever you’re surprising, we are sure to have a great way to make the Disney trip reveal magical for everyone involved.

1. Countdown Calendars

Feel free to hang it in plain sight or package it up like mail and give it to whoever you’re giving your surprise Disney trip to. This is a great Disney trip reveal and doesn’t take a lot of planning.

This is a great choice for those who don’t have a lot of time or for older teens/adults who don’t require a very extravagant approach, as younger kids may need a bigger surprise.

2. Disney surprise box

Have you considered giving a Disney surprise box for your Disney trip reveal? If you want to give a memorable trip to the person you’re surprising, this is a great way to do so!

One of our favorite websites for sending a Disney surprise box, chock-full of goodies from the Disney parks, is Pixie Dust 2 U. From this site, you can choose a boy or girl box. Some boxes have contained the following items: Disney luggage tag, color pack, Minnie/Mickey drawstring bag, non-park lightweight ears, lanyards, and other fun Disney items!

Use the code “WELCOME2U” for 10% off your first order!

3. Disney Shirts Reveal

Another great way to pull off your Disney surprise trip is by revealing it with Disney shirts! Whether you are surprising your significant other, friend, or family member, this is another simple fun way to let them know what you have planned!

In order to do this, it’s important to incorporate their favorite Disney character or movie to make it all that more sentimental for everyone involved. You can also save the shirts and wear them for your trip!

A popular design for Disney shirts is the family vacation ones which normally have the family name, month, and year.

Check out our Disney shirt post here, which is all-inclusive when it comes to the relationship with the person you’re surprising.

4. On the way to the airport

A great way to surprise kids with a Disney trip is to wait until the last minute to do so. This approach can be even more exciting since they have no idea the surprise Disney trip is coming.

As you approach the airport, ask them where they think you’re going. Drop hints such as dressing them in Disney clothing or playing Disney music in the car.

Once you arrive at the airport, let them know what you’ve planned. Their reactions will be worth the wait!

5. Scavenger Hunt

For the adventurous person in your life, a scavenger hunt is a great way to reveal a Disney trip! Start with a small note in the house and lead to the backyard, garage, etc. until you finally reveal a clue that reveals the surprise!

There are SO many of these scavenger hunts on Pinterest and the possibilities are endless with this approach. However you decide to set it up is your choice, but there are so many neat ways to really make the person wonder what you’re up to! If you’re wondering how to surprise kids with a Disney trip, this is the way!

6. Going to Grandma’s House

If you are able to commute to Disney World, telling your kids they’re going to a relative’s house is a great way to surprise them. This approach even allows you to pack clothes for them and not have questions asked when loading up the car.

This is best for small children, but older children may appreciate this one as well. It definitely depends on the child, though! Some may feel overwhelmed when planning for one thing and getting something completely different. Surely, once they get there, they will be in their element!

7. Suitcase filled with Disney items

This surprise is a great way to give the person you’re surprising some extra gear for the trip and being extra thoughtful while doing so! I mean, really, who wouldn’t love a suitcase or bag full of Disney items?

Some items to include are a pair of ears, character hand sanitizer, character masks, Disney keychains, autograph books, and anything else you can think of! Bonus points if the suitcase or travel bag is Disney-themed!

8. Mickey balloons wrapped in a large box

Similar to the gender reveal trend, this Disney surprise trip reveal involves a large box and Mickey-shaped balloons! Simply fill them up with helium (or air) and cut the box open to show your surprise!

If you decide to fill the balloons with air, you will just have to pull them out by hand. That is why this is ideal with helium balloons so they float to the top!

You can find cheap balloons at your local dollar tree! These include Mickey as well as other Disney character balloons! Read our Disney Dollar Tree post for more cheap finds!

9. Invitation From Mickey

This Disney surprise trip is foolproof and just requires some paper, a p en, and maybe some colored markers and stickers if you really want to seal the deal! Writing an invitation from Mickey is a great way to surprise someone with a Disney trip!

Since Mickey is the star of the show here, it’s only right he sends the invitations out, to be honest. There are so many different options for what to say in this letter, but including one of Mickey’s famous catchphrases like “oh boy!” Or “see you real soon,” is sure to authenticate it.

10. Disney-inspired breakfast

What better way to let someone know about a surprise trip to Disney than by bringing a little bit of Disney to them? Especially when it comes in the form of food!

Make some Mickey waffles or Gaston’s famous cinnamon rolls and let them guess what exactly it is you’re planning for them by giving them one of their favorite Disney treats as a hint.

If you’re not a great cook or baker, it’s always okay to store-buy items, too. It helps if everything is easily identifiable as Disney snacks, but if not, simply have them guess where they can find most of these tasty treats! It should be pretty obvious!

We also have a recipe for Epcot’s Violet Lemonade here , which is a great addition to whatever you decide to prepare!

17 Memorable Surprise Cruise Reveal Ideas

' src=

If you love giving gifts, we wouldn't be shocked if you love the thought of these surprise cruise reveal ideas. Part of the fun of a cruise is sharing the joy of trip planning with someone, even before you leave home.

Do you need ideas for how to spill the beans that you've booked a cruise for someone special? We've got you covered.

You can use some of these surprise cruise reveal ideas in combination with others on the list or ones you come up with.

Disclosure: This page has affiliate links, meaning we may earn a small commission if you click the link and proceed with a purchase  at no cost to you . This helps us produce the free, valuable content we offer readers. We truly only recommend cruises, experiences, products, and services we personally use. As Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

Memorable ways to surprise someone with a cruise, with a photo of a riverboat in the water.

1. Create a Memory Book of your Past Adventures to Reveal Your Next Adventure

Create a memory book if you've already been on cruises together — or even a trip on land. Then, on the last page, announce your next adventure! (The next adventure is a cruise, with the date of the sailing, of course.)

We LOVE these photo books for travel adventures. In fact, they're the only ones we buy.

Don't forget to plan ahead if you're going to create a photo book for your surprise cruise reveal idea, accounting for your time to create it and shipping.

2. gift a charm with a cruise — or nautical — theme.

Adding a charm to a new bracelet, keychain, or necklace (or existing one) is a great gift to give to surprise someone with a cruise. It can be a sailboat charm (especially if you're going on a cruise with sails ), a cruise ship charm, or even an anchor charm. Nature charms, such as seashells or fish-inspired charms, are easy to find too.

Pandora is famous for its beautiful charm bracelets. You can get them in gold, silver, or enamel colors. You can also put their charms on necklaces they sell if bracelets aren't the taste of whoever you're gifting them to.

Etsy is another great place to look — and customize — charm bracelets and find a custom one.

If you love the idea of gifting a bracelet to surprise someone with a cruise and want it to be nautical-themed but not necessarily a charm, check out our review of the OMEGA Sailing Bracelet .

Don't let the Nautical Bracelet you want go out of stock!

3. Make a Cruise Reveal Scavenger Hunt

You can send someone on a scavenger hunt with clues leading to the next location, ending in your surprise gift: a cruise reveal!

There's no need to venture far from home for this if you want to carry out a cruise surprise scavenger hunt in your house or apartment or just your neighborhood. (It's a great date idea at home, too.) You can even end the scavenger hunt where you keep your luggage so you're all set to pack your bags.

If you want to amp up the surprise cruise scavenger hunt, give the person you're gifting the cruise to a basket or bag with the first clue. Then, at each subsequent location where there is a cruise, he or she will find a small gift there.

At the end of the scavenger hunt, they'll be shocked to find you're going on a cruise together but also have a cool basket of cruise supplies ready for the trip.

4. Create a Fish Tank Surprise Cruise Reveal

Do you have a fish tank in your house? Or can you get one?

If so, purchase a small cruise ship memento to go inside the tank and guide your loved one over for a fun surprise cruise reveal idea.

It doesn't have to be a cruise ship (and you certainly don't want a sunken ship.) It can be something like a treasure chest if you're going on a Caribbean or tropical cruise or a seashell that you write the cruise info on.

Arrr! Ahoy mateys…surprise someone with a cruise with a fun treasure chest!

5. Create a Gift Basket (or Bag)

One of the most fun surprise cruise-reveal ideas is to put together a specialty-themed gift basket or bag. Here are a few great ideas we came up with:

  • Ports of Call themed : Create a gift basket of items related to the ports of call on the itinerary. For example, if you're going on a Danube River Cruise, you can include a bag of German pretzels, Vienna Cafe coffee mix from Austria, and paprika from Hungary. Reveal the common thread to the gift receiver in a card or in person!
  • Nautical-themed : Include things like snorkel gear (whether it will be your first time snorkeling on a cruise or your fifth), coral-reef-safe sunscreen, a sea or ocean-scented candle, and an anchor keychain.
  • Cruise Essentials themed : Get a fun towel, customized luggage tags, a personalized tumbler , and maybe even some fun sunglasses to add to a Cruise Essentials theme gift basket.

If you want a special bag, it can double as a duffle bag for your cruise or a beach bag for the trip.

6. Surprise Someone with a Cruise with a Message in a Bottle

Why not put a message in a glass bottle for a surprise trip reveal? It harkens back to the ocean and ships anyway, which is just what you need for a sea (or river, or lake) dwelling adventure.

Where do you find a bottle to use for this memorable keepsake? Here, on Etsy , of course!

Get a second “bottle” (aka, bubbly!) to celebrate!

7. Whisk her (or him) away

If you want the ultimate surprise then immediate gratification of going on a cruise, simply whisk someone away. You can pack bags for him or her, and even ask that person's boss for days off work if necessary. (My brother-in-law did this when he planned a surprise cruise for my sister. He proposed on the cruise!)

Then simply let that person know you're leaving…right now! We suggest stacking on surprise cruise reveal ideas to this one, so there's something you give that person just before you drive to the port or go to the airport to get to the port.

So, for example, you'd give the person a cruise gift basket, include a card or prepare a speech to say, “We're leaving right now!”

8. Airport Surprise

This one is easier to surprise kids with, but it's fun for anyone who likes surprises.

If you have to fly to the port of embarkation, surprise your kids with a twist on a switch-a-roo! Pack the car the night before you leave for the cruise. Then tell them you are all going to the airport to pick up a friend and they can't stay home alone.

Tell them their bags are packed for the cruise when you get to the airport! Don't forget fun cruise luggage tags to showcase the exciting news!

Cruise Lanyards & Luggage Tags

Be sure to have some fun things on your luggage or items to hand to your surprised cruisers, like nautical-themed luggage tags and lanyards!

9. The ‘Ole Switch-a-roo

If you are surprising someone who is game for any surprise, use the ‘ole switcharoo! Tell him/her that you're going to the beach or to the movies, for example, and then keep driving to the port! Just don't forget your luggage; keep in mind you'll have to pack for the people you're surprising.

10. Make a Fun Ocean or Boat-Themed Playlist

Do you ever turn on music in your home while you're making dinner, for instance? We do!

Create a music playlist with cruise-themed songs or songs inspired by your destination. For example, if you're going to Key West on a cruise, throw together a list of Jimmy Buffett tunes! Then drop hints on why you created the playlist.

Combine this with the start of a scavenger hunt, or cruise-themed bag, or gift basket idea .

11. Buy a Cruise Ship Holiday Ornament for Your Christmas Tree

Do you celebrate the holidays with a Christmas tree? Or anything like it?

If so, you can buy a cruise ornament and “hide” it in the tree. Then, perhaps on Christmas morning, ask your loved one to find the newest ornament on the tree. The reason it's there may need a bit more explaining but probably not much, once the other person finds it!

If you want to reveal the date with the ornament, create a little tag with the sailing information to float on top of it.

There are some VERY cute cruise ship ornaments on Etsy .

12. Write a Surprise Cruise Poem

Write a poem that includes the surprise reveal in it. Use words in your surprise cruise poem that have to do with the water, or the destination, or the cruise line.

Don't forget to get a great cruise greeting card to write the poem in!

13. Use a Custom Puzzle for a Surprise Cruise Reveal

If you're into putting together puzzles ( we certainly love puzzles ) then purchase a custom puzzle from somewhere like Etsy, with the big reveal. Be sure to keep in mind, however, that you may need a “puzzle completion date deadline” for this one. You wouldn't want to finish the puzzle after the cruise leaves.

For example, check out this puzzle that says, “We're Going to Alaska” puzzle. Wouldn't that be so exciting to give to someone to announce a cruise surprise to Alaska ? The best part is the puzzle is simple so the suspense is minimized. This Etsy Seller , FJ4LifeCreations, has a lot of these puzzles to announce various locations and you can also order a custom design too.

Wood puzzle that says "We're going to Alaska!" with the mountains on the bottom.

14. Create a Countdown Calendar

If you want to keep the excitement up as the days tick away and your cruise embarkation day gets closer and closer, create a countdown calendar. Tear off the day before as the next day comes into focus and your cruise gets ever-closer!

15. Disney Cruisers: Schedule a Call from the Characters

If you're going on a Disney Cruise and want to surprise a partner or your kids, you can schedule a surprise call from one of the characters. It's very easy to do in the Disney Cruise Line (DCL) Navigator App.

Don't forget to check out our invaluable DCL check-in process post, which shares what else you can do within the app like schedule a call from a character, including Mickey, Minnie, Donald, etc.

Want to take it to the next level? Have a basket, gift bag, or Mickey tote ready to hand over to the person receiving the call to keep that excitement going with a tangible item that they can use to pack for your Disney Cruise!

Mickey Tote

If you schedule a call from one of the Disney characters for a Disney Cruise, have a tote filled with Disney and cruise-themed goodies ready to hand over to the receiver of the call, who you're surprising. Something tangible like this will amp up everyone's excitement and is a great day-pack bag for your Disney Cruise.

16. Create a Word Search or Special Crossword Puzzle

If the person or people you're thinking of these surprise cruise reveal ideas for like brain teasers, create a special word search or crossword puzzle that has “surprise” and “cruise” in it.

Here are some additional ideas for what to include in the word puzzle:

  • Ports of call
  • Countries you'll be visiting
  • Packing list items
  • Cruise ship name
  • Cruise line name
  • Things you expect to see or experience during the cruise, like parasailing, snorkeling, glacier walks in Alaska , or wine tastings in Bordeaux !
  • Your family name or the names of everyone going on the cruise

17. Create a YouTube Playlist — Finish by Playing Your Own Video

Make a YouTube playlist with videos of the ship you'll be going on, or videos with the itinerary ports of call. Tell the person you're surprising with a cruise that you want to watch TV together, and then start playing the ship videos.

If that person likes cruises too he or she may not even question why you're watching one! But if that person doesn't, simply say that you heard about a cool feature or location that the cruise sails to.

At the end, be sure to have a pre-recorded video of yourself revealing the surprise cruise ready to go!

Ready to Book Your Cruise or INquire?

Use our preferred travel advisors, bolds travel, because….

  • They take away the hassle of travel planning : time spent on the phone with the cruise line could be time you spend doing other things.
  • You don't pay them a dime : their service is free (this is because they get paid by the cruise line or destination).
  • Their experience: They have decades of experience and attention to detail.

How to give a surprise trip as a gift

Summer Hull

There's really no better gift to give yourself or others than the gift of experiences and travel. Surprising someone with a trip can be the ultimate present ... to give and receive. There's just no question that a memorable travel experience is almost guaranteed to deliver more long-term happiness than another fuzzy sweater or gadget wrapped up in a bow .

Personally, I'm a sucker for putting slightly over-the-top gifts under the tree from time to time — including surprise trips. The pandemic slowed down that type of gifting at my house, but this may be the year that is right to try it once again.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

Even in normal times, giving a trip as a surprise can be complicated, or even disastrous, if you aren't careful. Here are my tried-and-tested tips for gifting a surprise trip to a close friend or family member.

surprise trip reveal

Be certain they'll love it

If you can't be 100% sure whether or not the gift recipient will love the trip's itinerary and be available to travel on the scheduled dates (with an appropriate passport, COVID-19 requirements, etc.), you shouldn't book the trip as a surprise.

You can still surprise them with the idea of the trip, but don't make the actual bookings (or at least any nonrefundable reservations) until you know for sure they want to go and are available.

surprise trip reveal

Don't use frequent flyer numbers in the booking

The easiest way to have your secret plan foiled is to have the trip show up in the recipient's email inbox or frequent flyer account. This will almost invariably happen if you use their frequent flyer or hotel loyalty numbers in the reservation. It sounds like an easy step to skip, but be aware it can happen automatically if you have booked a trip for them before and their frequent flyer numbers are stored in your account.

For example, one year I booked trips for both my mother and husband for Christmas, and both were already travelers in my United MileagePlus account. I had to enter them as new travelers in order to not have their frequent flyer numbers loaded into the reservation.

Related: Beginners guide to earning points and miles

In the end, it all worked, and once Christmas had passed, I added their United frequent flyer numbers and Known Traveler Numbers to the reservation.

Booking through a third-party site, such as Expedia, and leaving off the frequent flyer numbers can also work. There's a small chance it will make it difficult to use PreCheck (or a similar program) if the names don't 100% align, so there could be a potential slight downside to this form of secrecy — but it can keep your surprise under wraps.

Use an incognito browser

I won't even pretend to know all the ways that the internet is always "spying" on you, but I do know that when I'm shopping for someone on one computer in the house, the others often start to get targeted ads for that item or destination. So, to cut down on the likelihood you tip off anyone that may live with you about the surprise, do your research and purchases in an incognito browser.

Don't use their points

This one should be pretty obvious, but don't use someone else's miles or points to book a surprise trip -- even if it is your partner.

This is a bad idea for multiple reasons but on a practical level, they are likely to see the redemption in their account or inbox, so the surprise will probably be ruined.

Think about the 'extras'

It's a weird time, and so you need to think through things that used to just be extras when it came to trip planning. For example, if they need a rental car, you'll want to make sure that price and availability aren't going to be a problem.

Some ski resorts also limit lift ticket sales during peak dates, so if you are gifting them a ski trip, make sure they can still get lift tickets. Even Disney World sells out of tickets on certain dates, so ensure you make them Park Pass reservations to go along with gifted tickets in the case of a theme park trip tied to specific dates.

Basically, go through all components of the trip and pre-plan or at least adequately research the availability of all of the essential components.

surprise trip reveal

Be careful of what the trip will really cost them

If you're going to gift a trip (and that's very kind of you), think through how much the gift will ultimately cost the person traveling. For example, if you're giving them a cruise, will the recipient still be on the hook for flights to and from the port? What about a potential overnight at a hotel near the port and ancillary costs on the cruise ? If so, is that still a reasonable "gift"? These days, you may also need to factor COVID-19 testing into the equation.

In the case of a cruise, those ancillary expenses could total $1,000 or more, depending on the details, so think through if you're accidentally signing someone up for expenses they may or may not be ready to handle. Again, when in doubt, don't actually book the trip as a surprise.

surprise trip reveal

Consider gift certificates

One thing we've given extended family members in the past is airline gift cards , if we know the recipient likes to travel, but we aren't in a position to know exactly when and where they want to go.

This is an especially great way to give travel to grandparents who have grandkids and bucket list-worthy travel destinations scattered around the country and beyond. Hotels, Disney and even some cruise lines also all sell gift cards, making this a flexible way to gift travel without having to dive into a specific booking.

Related: The best starter travel credit cards

Wrap it up in a creative way

The gift of travel doesn't need to be packaged in fancy wrapping paper in order to be awesome.

If you're like me, however, it's fun to strategize an unforgettable way for the recipient to discover the gift. For example, you could give a trip to Paris in a box of macarons, a ski trip in a box of fake snow or, in our case a few years ago, a trip to Spain using a huge map that your mom had in her high school Spanish classroom for over 30 years.

It isn't totally necessary, of course, but it sure builds up the fun and excitement for everyone in the room, as you can see by our trip reveal to my mom on Christmas morning a few years ago.

Giving the gift of a vacation may be a bit more risky than a sweatshirt, gift card or blanket, but it can also be way more rewarding for everyone involved if you can pull it off.

10 Awesome Ways To Reveal A Surprise Disney World Trip

Avatar photo

Part of the fun of going on a Disney World vacation is surprising friends and/or loved ones with the trip – at that moment, the person gifting the experience gets to make someone’s dreams come true.

Then, of course, once arriving at the parks, Disney World takes care of the rest.

Ten awesome ways to reveal a surprise trip to Disney World include:

  • Having Mickey balloons spring out of a box
  • Planning a scavenger hunt
  • Revealing the trip during family game night
  • Creating a surprise advent calendar
  • Mailing a letter of invitation from Mickey Mouse
  • Cooking a Disney-themed breakfast or dinner
  • Making custom Disney t-shirts
  • The dog collar reveal
  • Filling a suitcase with Disney merch
  • Concealing the trip until pulling up to the resort gates.

This article explains how each surprise trip reveal can be perfectly executed and who might enjoy them most.

10 Ways To Reveal A Surprise Disney World Trip

  • 1) Surprise Mickey Balloons in a Box

Close-up photo of Minnie Mouse and Mickey Mouse balloons.

Nothing says “surprise” like something popping out of a box.

For this reveal, pack a box with helium-filled Mickey Mouse balloons and Disney items that spring from within once opened.

To really drive the message home, tie a small banner announcing the trip between two balloons.

This idea can be dressed up for holidays or birthdays by wrapping the box in festive paper and ribbons.

To make the receiver work a little harder, planners can also utilize the box-in-a-box method.

Start with one big box that reveals a smaller package and then an even smaller one until the balloons are released.

  • 2) Plan a Disney Scavenger Hunt

Planners can draw out the surprise by creating a scavenger hunt that ends in the big reveal.

This idea will take careful coordination and is more fun if Disney-themed items are used for clues along the way.

For excellent foreshadowing, the gift-giver can even have the scavengers search for hidden Mickeys around the house.

This Hidden Mickeys scavenger hunt is the perfect prep for the real Hidden Mickey challenge – a popular side quest for eagle-eyed guests visiting Disney World theme parks.

  • 3) Incorporate the Surprise Into a Game Night

A family of four is playing a board game in the living room.

Blend the reveal seamlessly into an already exciting game night.

The opportunities to execute this surprise are as vast as the number of board games stuffed inside a closet.

Planners can use the trip as a prompt in games like charades or Pictionary or even customize playing cards to announce the upcoming vacation.

For extra creativity points, have the recipient(s) piece together a personalized jigsaw puzzle that lists the date of the trip once the final piece is snapped into place.

Players may also be so consumed by the chosen game that it takes them a moment to realize what’s happening.

Once they figure out they’re going to Disney World, it will make for a funny and memorable reaction everyone will surely enjoy.

  • 4) Create a Disney Advent Calendar

The holidays are the perfect time for gift-giving, and for many, nothing is better than a surprise visit to the Most Magical Place on Earth.

Traditions like Christmas advent calendars can be customized to reveal a hint each day until ultimately unveiling the Disney vacation on Christmas morning.

Tiny Disney trinkets, candy, or written riddles are the perfect compact items to place inside each calendar compartment.

For those who want trip-goers to work for their prize, combine the advent calendar with the puzzle or the scavenger hunt.

This idea is also extremely versatile, making it great for kids, significant others, or friends.

  • 5) Mail a Letter of Invitation From Mickey Mouse

A red envelope on a yellow surface.

No matter how digital the world becomes, everyone still loves a letter in the mail – especially children receiving one from Mickey Mouse himself.

To ensure the invitation feels authentic, writers should incorporate some famous phrases from the Disney icon, such as “oh gee,” “that sure is swell,” or “gosh.”

Mickey’s letter can also be framed on a wall, pressed into a scrapbook, or tucked into a memory chest so parkgoers can cherish the moment for years to come.

  • 6) Cook a Disney-Themed Breakfast or Dinner

Tease every traveler’s taste buds with a Disney-themed breakfast or dinner.

Not only will the thematic treats lead up to the perfect announcement, but they will also give everyone a taste of the magical meals they can expect when visiting Disney.

Some park favorites include Mickey Mouse-shaped waffles, beignets, or giant pretzels.

Any Disney fan would be thrilled by a Mickey-shaped meal and even more ecstatic about their upcoming Disney vacation.

Apart from Disney-shaped or inspired foods, planners can also recreate dishes from their favorite Disney films.

For example, a date-turned-Disney-trip-reveal pairs great with the iconic Lady and The Tramp spaghetti and meatballs.

  • 7) Make Custom Disney T-Shirts

Back view of a woman wearing a white t-shirt with Mickey Mouse written on it.

The internet is a treasure trove of custom-made items that Disney trip planners should take advantage of.

A great personalized idea for revealing a Disney trip is to design customized Disney t-shirts.

These shirts can include the receiver’s favorite Disney character, slogan, or even their name and the dates of the trip, and can be easily slipped into a gift bag for a simple yet heartfelt reveal.

  • 8) The Dog Collar Reveal

Even if travelers don’t plan on bringing their dog to Disney, they can still involve their furry friend in the trip reveal.

Planners can write out the details on a small piece of paper, roll it up so it fits snugly in the collar, and send their dog to surprise their significant other or family members.

Once the pets and head scratches are over, receivers will either notice the note or be directed to it.

After reading the paw-delivered message, the excitement will surely leave hearts racing and tails wagging.

  • 9) Fill a Suitcase With Disney Merch

A woman in a blue sweatshirt is zipping a suitcase on the floor.

Tackle two tasks at once by filling a suitcase with Disney merch to surprise upcoming Disney guests.

Whether using new luggage or the tried-and-true carry-on, unsuspecting parkgoers will love unzipping their way to their dream vacation.

Not to mention, by filling the suitcase with Disney-themed clothing and accessories, half the packing is already done!

To browse and purchase Disney merchandise beforehand, future visitors can use shopDisney or the My Disney Experience app .

  • 10) Reveal the Trip When Pulling Up to the Park Gates

To reveal a Disney trip at the very last minute, planners can pack up the family for a surprise road trip.

For the best build-up, keep the final destination a secret until pulling up to the front gates of Disney World.

This idea works best with younger kids who won’t catch on when passing signs leading up to the resort’s entrance.

Playing Disney music and having the family wear Disney-themed clothing is also a sneaky way to set the tone and drop hints for what’s to come.

Ten awesome ideas for revealing a surprise Disney trip are:

  • Having surprise Mickey balloons pop out of a box
  • Planning a Disney scavenger hunt
  • Incorporating the surprise into family game night
  • Creating a Disney advent calendar
  • Keeping the trip a secret until reaching the front gates.

These trip reveals can be combined or expanded and tailor-made for Disney fans eager to visit the theme parks.

I love traveling. I've been to every continent except Antarctica, and I always looking for the next adventure.

Ever since I was a child, my favorite trips have been to theme parks – I love getting lost in the magic of Disney and have never had a bad experience at Universal Studios.

I never shy away from trying new things and enjoy making new memories wherever I go.

[Warning: The below contains spoilers for American Idol .]

The American Idol hopefuls didn’t have much time to celebrate making it into the Top 20. That’s because they had to prepare to perform once again for the first live results show on Monday night. Based on America’s vote, another six went home.

Host Ryan Seacrest announced the 10 chosen by the audience based on almost 25 million votes for “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night” on April 21. From there, judges Luke Bryan , Katy Perry (cutting dress and all), and Lionel Richie had the arduous task of deciding the rest of the Top 14.

See how the night unfolded and which favorites exited the competition below.

Quintavious

The 22-year-old sang for survival, not making it through with America’s vote. He aptly chose Mariah Carey’s “Make It Happen” and even hit a high octave to give the judges all the goods. Luke called the note the “break the church glass” and his best performance.

McKenna Faith Breinholt

Jordan Anthony

The tall 19-year-old from Australia was not voted into the Top 14. He went with “Attention” by Charlie Puth hoping to impress the judges enough for one of their four slots. Katy said he was right around the A and loved the energy. She went as far as to call it his best performance.

Jack Blocker

The 25-year-old from Dallas had a reason to smile making it through thanks to the nationwide vote. He grabbed his guitar and performed “Feeling Whitney” by Post Malone to celebrate.

Kennedy Reid

Our resident Idol mortician was not among America’s vote picks. The 23-year-old responded with the sassy “Somethin’ Bad” by Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood. Lionel said that was the way to deal with no. He liked her attitude and personality on stage.

Jennifer Jeffries

The 18-year-old from Starkville, Mississippi didn’t win over America enough for a spot in the Top 14. She answered with “All I Want” by Kodaline in hopes of continuing to sing another day via a judge’s pick. Luke was shocked America didn’t vote her in. He said it may have been one of his favorite performances and finds her voice unique.

The nursing home security guard didn’t get chosen by the nationwide vote for the Top 14. He sang for survival on “Call Out My Name” by The Weeknd. Katy called the performance excellent and smart.

Mia Matthews

The 19-year-old from Centre, Alabama won over the people enough with a spot in the Top 14. She stayed in the country lane and what brought her to the dance with “Burning House” by Cam. Her sister and mom drove 30 hours to watch Mia perform. I’d say it was worth the trip.

America is falling in love with the king of the originals, voting him into the next round. The 23-year-old revived a past Kayko classic in “What If?” to take his proverbial victory lap. At one point, Kayko brought the laughs by talking about how Ryan would be a great dad. The judges agreed, but it was clear Ryan thought this conversation was a little much for a results show. LOL.

The 28-year-old Broadway performer was not among the nationwide vote picks. She showcased her diva-bility on a current hit “Water” by Tyla. “Way to switch it up,” Lionel said. He thought she brought not only a great voice but attitude. The Hall of Famer called it a star performance.

Will Moseley

The 23-year-old country boy earned his slot into the Top 14. He performed his chart-topping hit “Gone For Good.” Lionel remarked on his ability to translate to audiences.

The 21-year-old tugged at heartstrings with the tribute to her grandparents and won over America into the victory zone. She sang “My Mind” by Yebba in celebration.

Odell Bunton Jr.

The 29-year-old Texan found himself in the danger zone of elimination. He took the Hollywood audience to church on “Wait On You” by Elevation Worship and Maverick City Music featuring Dante Bowe and Chandler Moore. Luke thought he did a great job and felt spiritual enlightenment. The country star was moved.

Kaibrienne “KB” Richins

America felt the 20-year-old’s emotional Sunday night performance enough to vote her into the Top 14. She then put her spin on “Zombie” by The Cranberries.

Mackenzie Sol

The 23-year-old content creator from Las Vegas didn’t get the green light into the Top 14 from viewers. He hoped to sing himself out of the danger zone with “False Alarms” by Lawrence featuring Jon Bellion. Katy called him a tornado of energy through the season but found control tonight. She added that he showed up.

Emmy Russell

The 25-year-old granddaughter of Loretta Lynn has become a fan favorite so it’s no surprise she made the Top 14. The singer-songwriter came to the stage barefoot and took it back to the one that started it all with her original “skinny.”

Julia Gagnon

The 22-year-old who closed out Sunday’s show motivated America to send her to the next round. She sang “Need A Favor” by recent mentor Jelly Roll.

Jayna Elise

The 2023 alum got the news she had to sing for survival once more. She decided on “All I Wanted” by Paramore to win the judges over. Lionel said that the reaction from the crowd speaks for itself. He complimented how she could make a high note a whisper, calling it a command performance.

Triston Harper

The 15-year-old country singer found himself the youngest finalist in the Top 14. He performed Cody Johnson’s “‘Til You Can’t.”

Roman Collins

The 24-year-old from Long Beach was the last to perform for the judge’s save. He finished the night of entertainment with a classic James Brown tune in “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World.” Katy was feeling it so much her sharp top had a wardrobe malfunction. Luke said he could blow the roof off the place. “Or a top,” Katy quipped.

Eliminations.

After watching all the hopefuls in the danger zone of elimination, the judges ultimately chose Jayna Elise, Jordan Anthony, Nya, and Roman Collins to stick around. With the Top 14 in place, it meant the end of the journey for Mackenzie Sol, Odell Bunton Jr., Quintavious, Kennedy Reid, Jennifer Jeffries, Jordan Anthony, and Ajii.

Those who made it through have “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night” on April 21 to look forward to with KISS legend Gene Simmons serving as guest mentor. Then it’s the Top 12 where Meghan Trainor will guide the hopefuls through the “Billboard #1 Hits” themed episode.

Prince Andrew's 2019 BBC interview is now the subject of a Netflix film. Steve Parsons/AP hide caption

Prince Andrew's 2019 BBC interview is now the subject of a Netflix film.

"The big get." In media lingo, that means the interview with the person at the center of a big story.

Think Monica Lewinsky after her affair with then-president Clinton, or the actor Alec Baldwin after the cinematographer was shot and killed on the set of his movie. Or Britain's Prince Andrew after his friend Jeffrey Epstein was arrested on sex trafficking charges.

Interviews like these can entail months of negotiations, calls, emails and meetings to persuade that person to go on the record. That is what happened in 2019, when BBC journalist Emily Maitlis sat down with Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, at Buckingham Palace.

Court documents reveal names of powerful men allegedly linked to Jeffrey Epstein

Then-BBC Newsnight booker Sam McAlister had spent almost a year talking to Prince Andrew's private secretary and the prince himself. The result was an infamous interview in which Prince Andrew described Epstein's actions as "unbecoming," said the financier's home was a "convenient place to stay" during a trip to New York, and said he had a condition that meant he couldn't sweat.

The booking and the interview have now been dramatized in the new Netflix film Scoop, released this month. McAlister spoke with All Things Considered host Mary Louise Kelly about how she got the interview, and how she kept a poker face as the interview played out before her eyes.

The Netflix trailer for Scoop .

This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

Mary Louise Kelly: So your task was not only landing the interview — talking the palace and the prince into doing this — but talking them into doing a serious news interview where they would not be able to vet or control the questions in any way. Walk us through the argument that persuaded them. What did you say?

Prince Andrew Steps Back From Public Duties Over Ties To Jeffrey Epstein

Prince Andrew Steps Back From Public Duties Over Ties To Jeffrey Epstein

Sam McAlister: Well, there's a double argument, right? Here is a man who used to be effectively a national hero in the United Kingdom. He was the beloved son of the Queen, her favorite son by all accounts, a war hero. And now he was effectively a problem prince at best. And then, on the more pretentious level, of course, there was a view of Prince Andrew about him and his behaviors and the allegations against him, which, of course, he strenuously denies. But it was a double opportunity: a human opportunity to return to the life he had, and a royal opportunity to basically restore his reputation in some ways. So I feel it was those two things that made this really a dream opportunity, at least on paper, for him.

Kelly : Was there a moment in the negotiations where you could tell, "I got him?" Like, that just landed. He's going to do it.

McAlister : There was a moment where I thought we might have him. The last negotiation is face to face with Prince Andrew and a surprise guest, his daughter Princess Beatrice, in Buckingham Palace. I mean, you can imagine how overwhelming that was. It was about two hours long. I felt we had a rapport. Emily, the presenter, was also there and Stuart Maclean, who was the deputy editor. And at that moment of rapport, there's a moment of peril, and there's a moment of chance. And I said something quite bold. I told him the truth, which was always my style, that he was known as "Randy Andy."

And that moment is really where he's [either] going to laugh, and he knows that we have integrity and trust and we're honest with him, or he's going to slam the door in our face. Now, luckily it was the former. But you never, ever know if someone's going to say yes until you get that final call.

The full BBC Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew.

Kelly : So you get the yes. The interview is taking place. The prince's answers are sounding increasingly tone deaf, let me put it that way. Take me to that room. Where are you, and what is going through your mind?

McAlister : Oh, my gosh. So I'm about 15 feet behind him. And I used to be a criminal lawyer, and I used to represent people accused of all kinds of things. And one of the great skills of that world is poker face. And thank goodness for poker face — 15 feet behind those incredible answers, trying not to show any emotion, trying not to communicate any panic or fear or consternation. And all I can see is the back of his head. So I saw the front of him for the first time when it went out a couple of days later. But it really was a masterclass in how to give terrible answers and, from my tiny perspective, a small, personal masterclass in showing no emotion whatsoever on your face for an hour — one of the longest hours in television history, I would say.

Kelly : I mean, was there a moment where you're thinking, "Oh, my God, this is just going completely off the rails?"

McAlister : I think it was almost every moment. It was like building. And after the first answer, which was his mildest answer, every line was a news line. Just watching them kind of pile on top of one another over and over. It was really journalistically, obviously, the highlight of my career and quite an extraordinary experience.

What to know about the Jeffrey Epstein 'John Doe' files that were just unsealed

What to know about the Jeffrey Epstein 'John Doe' files that were just unsealed

Kelly: Well, the fallout, the consequences from this interview were almost immediate. Just a few days afterward, Prince Andrew stepped back from royal duties. Did you have a sense, even as the interview was unfolding, like, this is going to have just extraordinary consequences?

McAlister : I knew it was huge. I'm not going to lie. I knew how consequential it was in theory. But the idea that it would topple a member of the royal family, effectively — you know, sacked by his own mother and we'd still be talking about it, let alone that I would have the opportunity of this incredible movie — it would have sounded like I was drunk if I'd said that to you. So I knew it was a scoop, but I just did not know it was the scoop of scoops.
