Genting Dream Review

Review of genting dream.

The 2016-built MS Genting Dream cruise ship was the first vessel in the fleet of the Chinese premium brand Dream Cruises (Genting Hong Kong/GHK-owned subsidiary company launched in November 2015). One of the world's largest passenger liners , the 151300-GT-ton vessel debuted in November 2016. Its former fleetmates were World Dream/Manara (2017/sistership), Resorts World One (1999-built as SuperStar Virgo, named Explorer Dream after the transfer from Star Cruises in 2019) and the larger Global Dream/Disney Adventure (2020/GLOBAL-class).

The vessel (IMO number 9733105) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311000319) and registered in Nassau .

Since May 2022, Genting Dream operates for Resorts World Cruises ( new travel brand ) established by GHK's former owner Lim Kok Thai.

MS Genting Dream's last drydock refurbishment was in 2023 (February 17 through March 1), being previously refurbished in 202 (January). Both drydocking renovation projects were conducted in Singapore (at Sembcorp Marine Admiralty Yard).

History - construction and ownership

In late-April 2022, Asian online media reported that Genting Dream becomes the first liner in the fleet of "Resorts World Cruises" - a Singapore -registered company (incorporated on March 9, 2022) established by Lim Kok Thay (Genting Group/Genting Cruise Lines). Also was reported that Resorts World Cruises is in negotiations with banks and investors to acquire Dream Cruises' other two vessels (Explorer Dream, World Dream).

The company's management team is led by Colin Au (CEO and Executive Director) and Michael Goh (President and International Sales Directors). Resorts World Cruises opened bookings for Genting Dream on May 18, 2022.

The parent company "Resorts World" is a Genting Group-owned subsidiary (Malaysian hospitality and casino franchise) and brand used across all Genting-owned resorts and casinos worldwide. Resorts World has ultra-premium properties (46 total/as of 2022) in Asia (Malaysia's Pahang, Terengganu, Langkawi-Kedah, Singapore's Sentosa Island, Philippines' Newport City-Pasay, Entertainment City-Paranaque, Macau's Nam Vam Lake), also in the USA (Winchester Nevada, Queens NYC, Kiamesha Lake NY, Miami Florida), Bahamas (North Bimini) and Europe (Solihull-Birmingham, England UK).

On May 18, 2022, at a news conference, Resorts World Cruises officially announced that as a "gesture of goodwill" the new company will offer complimentary FCCs/future cruise credits of "equivalent value" to all customers affected by World Dream's cancellations ( cruises to nowhere from Singapore/bookings for voyages scheduled for departure between March 2 and August 31, 2022). The FCCs were valid for the period June 15, 2022, through March 31, 2023, and applicable only to affected World Dream bookings that had not yet received any refund from the original booking source.

According to Colin Au (Resorts World Cruises' CEO and Executive Director, also GHK's former Deputy CEO), as the provisional liquidator couldn't revive the brand (Dream Cruises), they had worked with the Chinese lessors (Genting Dream's shipowner) and had decided to restart operations under the new "Resorts World" brand.

GHK is a global entertainment, hospitality, and leisure company based in Hong Kong . For its new Dream Cruises brand, GHK ordered two custom-built vessels to serve the Asian market, specifically China. GHK's other two cruise market segments were served by separate brands - Crystal Cruises (ultra-luxury) and Star Cruises (contemporary).

On October 7, 2013, Star Cruises announced that GHK signed a shipbuilding agreement with Meyer Werft ( Papenburg Germany ) for the construction of a new vessel for Star Cruises, with scheduled delivery in 2016-Q4. On February 10, 2014, was ordered a sistership, with scheduled delivery in 2017-Q4. Both vessels were with gross tonnage 150,000 GT tons and double-occupancy passenger capacity 3364.

However, later GHK decided to create a new brand (Dream Cruises) and both newbuilds were transferred to the new company. MS Genting World's (later renamed "MS World Dream") steel-cutting ceremony was held on February 9, 2015, at Meyer Werft Papenburg shipyard. MS Genting Dream debuted in November 2016. The sistership World Dream was launched in November 2017. On August 20, 2016, Genting Dream was floated out of the covered building dock 2 at Meyer Werft Papenburg.

Decks and Cabins

MS Genting Dream staterooms (1686 total) accommodate between 3376-3400 passengers served by 2020 crew, meaning a crew-to-guest ratio of 1:1.7, which is the highest in comparison to any Asia Pacific ship. The German-built vessel is also designed with spacious interiors.

~70% of all staterooms are with private step-out balconies, and 100+ cabins are connecting (with adjoining interior doors) making them suitable for families. Suite services include special perks, privileges, professional European butler service.

The largest accommodations are the Dream Grand Villas (sized 224 m2 / 2410 ft2). Other Dream Suite categories Executive (56-80 m2 / 600-860 ft2) and Deluxe (43 m2 / 460 ft2).

"THE PALACE" is a ship-within-ship concept/exclusive complex consisting of 154x premium Palace Suites (sized 37-40 m2 / 400-430 ft2), with exclusive dining and lounge venues/areas, butler service, suite-only perks. The 5-star luxury complex is sized nearly 10,000 m2 (108,000 ft2) and includes The Palace Restaurant, Gym, exclusive sundeck with a swimming pool. The all-inclusive luxury experience features Seafood Buffet (The Palace Restaurant), complimentary Premium Beverage package (in all onboard bars and restaurants), Captain's Welcome Cocktail Party, Crystal Life Cafe (healthy breakfast, vegetarian lunch), dedicated Kids Program (for children 2 to 12 yo), dedicated "Connoisseurs Circle" (enrichment program), complimentary fitness classes, complimentary shore excursions, priority services, specialty dining shipwide.

The boat has 18 decks , of which 14 are passenger-accessible and 10 with cabins.

Note: Deck 15 is actually the ship's "Deck 14". This enumeration is due to the fact that for the Chinese, numbers that include 4 are considered unlucky - similar to the Western practice about the number 13, and the Italians' number 17.

In January 2017, Dream Cruises announced the inaugural cruise itineraries of their first newbuild Genting Dream. The homeporting in Singapore (starting December 3, 2017) made it the first large-sized cruise ship based there for year-round operations. Genting Dream is the latest generation vessel (Germany-built) and is calling at more than 10 ports in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam during 2018.

The vessel (Meyer Neptun yard/hull number S712) has volume 150695 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight 15370 tons, mx width 44 m (with the bridge wings), max draught 8,6 m. The powerplant is based on MAN B&W marine diesel engines (model 14V48/60B) with combined output 62,4 MW (83680 hp).

Before Resorts World Cruises, the registered shipowner were three Genting Hong Kong Ltd-owned companies (Xiang CR18 HK International Ship Lease Co Ltd, Sea 172 Leasing Co Ltd, Compass Shipping 32 Co Ltd) while the registered operator was GENTING CRUISE LINES.

The vessel's physical construction/assembly officially started on December 4, 2015, with the keel-laying ceremony held at Meyer Werft GmbH's Neptun yard in Papenburg Germany . During the ceremony, a massive keel block (number 2 / one of the ship's all 92 building blocks) was lifted into the dock to officially start the assembly process. GHK's Chairman and CEO Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay laid the traditional "lucky coin" (a good fortune symbol) under the block to bless the new vessel.

The vessel was floated out from drydock on August 20, 2016. Its conveyance (northbound route to North Seas along Ems River) started on September 18, leaving the Papenburg shipyard at around 2 pm. It entered the North Sea waters on Sept 19, at around 6 pm. After the scheduled sea trials, the ship docked in Bremerhaven (at Columbus Cruise Center).

On November 14, 2016, was the christening ceremony held at Guangzhou (Port Nansha) . The ship's godmother is Mrs. Puan Sri Cecilia Lim - wife of Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay. He is Chairman and CEO of GHK (Genting Hong Kong) and second son of Genting Group's founder Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong. The naming ceremony was attended by over 900 distinguished guests, including numerous VIPs (prominent Chinese government officials, top executives from the cruise industry and shipping trade). Among the VIP guests were Cai Zhaolin (Guangzhou's Vice Mayor), Zeng Xiaofeng (Tourism Administration of Guangdong Province's Deputy Director), Chen Hongxian (Guangzhou Port's Chairman), Cai Jinlong (Guangzhou Port's General Manager). The welcome aboard event was held at the ship's Zodiac Theater (999-seat show lounge) led by Thatcher Brown (Dream Cruises' President). Next spoke Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay (GHK's Chairman and CEO). Followed the traditional for China exchange of gifts.

MS Genting Dream cruise ship construction

On October 12, 2016, the vessel was officially delivered to Dream Cruises by Meyer Werft in Bremerhaven. Ships' hull art (titled "Voyage of a Lover’s Dream”) is by the Chinese artist Jacky Tsai.

Wartsila Funa was the supplier of the ship's unique external "Dynamic Exterior Lighting" system. The order was placed in 2016-Q1. The innovative lighting system provides stunning visual effects (color, movement, and video) to the vessel's exterior. The technology is based on custom-designed and individually controlled LED RGBW lighting units. Wartsila Funa specializes in audio, video and lighting control design for large land-based public facilities (including theme parks, attractions, museums) and for cruise ships.

Ship's first Captain (Master) was Jukka Silvennoinen.

In late-September 2019, GHK (shipowner) sold Genting Dream (via sale-and-leaseback deal) to a consortium of three Chinese banks. The liner was sold for USD 900 million (~EUR 805 million) or 80% of its current market value (EUR 1,055 billion / USD 1,18 billion). According to a previous filing, as of June 30, 2019, the vessel's unaudited net asset value was ~USD 862,5 million (~EUR 777,3 M). The deal was finalized on January 15, 2020. The liner was immediately bareboat chartered (leased back to GHK) for 12 years, which means it will be purchased back by GHK in 2031.

The vessel's sale and leaseback transaction was with a 4-party consortium of Chinese financial companies - Bocomm Leasing (Bank of Communications Financial Leasing Co Ltd, 2007-founded), CMB Financial Leasing Co Ltd (part of China Merchants Bank), CCB Financial Leasing Corporation Ltd (part of China Construction Bank) and CDB Leasing (China Development Bank Financial Leasing Co Ltd). GHK's Financial advisor was DNB Markets (2003-founded, part of DNB Bank ASA / fka DnB NOR Bank).

Genting Dream refurbishments review

In January 2020, the ship was drydocked for 3 days at Sembcorp Marine Shipyard ( Singapore ) for general maintenance works and technical updates. During the drydock was installed a new dual water hybrid scrubber (exhaust gas cleaning system, supplied by Valmet) and 2 new overboard discharge valves (for the Valmet scrubbers). Maintenance works also included hull cleaning, swimming pools modifications (for reducing the vessel's draft/draught) and equipment tests - conducted by specialists from the companies Wartsila (engines), ABB (propulsion system) and DNV GL (classification society). Refurbishment works / new flooring received the World Buffet (Lido restaurant).

Genting Dream was last drydock refurbished in 2023 (February 17 - March 1) at Singapore's Sembcorp Shipyard. The drydocking was mainly for regular maintenance (technical and class works).

Itineraries 2017-2018

Genting Dream is departing from Singapore between December 3 (2017) and March 25 (2018), operating on the following itinerary routes:

  • 2-Night Weekend Cruise (Every Friday)
  • 5-Night Singapore-Kuala Lumpur-Penang-Phuket Cruise (Every Sunday on Odd Week)
  • 5-Night Singapore-Surabaya-North Bali Cruise (Every Sunday on Even Week)
  • 12-Night B2B cruise (back-to-back) combining the above 3 itineraries with the alternative of a land hotel instead of the weekend cruise.

In September 2017, CLIA Australasia (abbrev "Cruise Lines International Association") held its annual "Masters Conference 2017" onboard Genting Dream. The conference sessions were lead by Scott Koepf (motivational speaker) and were focused on the cruise industry's trends and how travel consultants can benefit from the sector’s growth. The annual event is open to consultants with "CLIA Ambassador" level accreditation and employed by CLIA member travel agencies. Masters Conference 2017 commenced in Hong Kong (China) on September 16. All booked travel agents enjoyed 1-night pre-cruise accommodation before boarding the ship for a 5-night cruise to Japan visiting Naha (Okinawa Island) and Miyakojima . Participation fees were included in cruise prices (USD 1880 pp double occupancy/airfare excluded).

What’s New on Genting Dream — Resorts World Cruises Review

genting dream cruise july 2023

Find out what’s new and what’s back on board the new Resorts World Cruises’ Genting Dream!

After having a whale of a time on Dream Cruises’ cruise to nowhere , we were pretty bummed when it ceased operations in March 2022 . Thankfully, it has returned under a new name — Resorts World Cruises !

To find out what’s new and what’s back, we hopped on its inaugural cruise on 15 June 2022. So here’s a preview of what to expect on Genting Dream 🚢.

Pre-boarding Essentials

Resort World Cruises Genting Dream - Singapore Cruise

Before you set sail, here are some pre-boarding essentials to take note of:

1) Mandatory online check-in — closes 24 hours before sailing 2) Take a supervised or tele-supervised ART test and present a negative result — earliest one day prior to sailing 3) Fill up a pre-boarding health questionnaire — on the day of sailing 4) Collect your cruise key card — on the day of sailing 5) Check-in via SafeEntry on the TraceTogether app or token — before boarding the ship

What’s New on Genting Dream

This may be the same ship under Dream Cruises but we’ve sussed out the new stuff.

1) Immersive Activities with Performers

People posing in Brazilian Carnival Dance - Genting Dream

This was one thing I really loved about the cruise. Especially when I spotted my on-board dance instructor on the big stage performance just a couple of hours later!

People Performing on Stage - Genting Dream

The entertainment organisers wanted to create an immersive experience for guests to “dive” into, so guests could interact with the performers even when they were off stage.

An afterparty was held at the dance floor of Zouk Beach Club so the fun doesn’t end when the performance does.

People Dancing at Zouk Night Club - Singapore Cruise

Unfortunately, my dance instructor recognised us so we couldn’t escape the awkward dancing 😅 but at least we still had a great time!

2) Foam Party at Sea

People Partying with Foam - Genting Dream

For those who just want to party (but with an extra kick), here’s a brand new activity: foam party at sea!

Equipped with a giant foam spraying machine, gigantic floats, and water guns, we had a blast blowing foam at each other for two hours and imagining it was snow in hot, humid Singapore.

Don’t worry about the aftermath too. There will be towels provided to help you dry off before you head on to your next activity.

3) World’s First Internationally Halal-certified Kitchen on a Cruise

Genting Dream is not the first cruise ship to serve halal food, but it’s the first with an internationally halal-certified kitchen.

Halal-Certified Buffet - Genting Dream

This is based on OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) and SMIIC (The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries) standards. The cruise also holds a vegetarian certification by Global Vegetarian Certification Services.

Man in Halal Lift - Singapore Cruise

We even went behind the scenes and discovered that there are dedicated timings and lifts to deliver the food.

From the way the food is prepared and delivered, to the way utensils are washed after — everything is segregated so there is no chance of cross-contamination at all!

While this doesn’t really affect me personally, it helps give my Muslim friends peace of mind when dining on a cruise 🙂.

On-board Activities

Most of the facilities and activities are similar to the previous Dream Cruises, so here’s a recap of what you can expect on this one.

Girl Bowling - Genting Dream

Rain or shine, these are some activities that you can do: arcade, bowling, karaoke, t-shirt or tote bag painting workshops, and workout classes. But prepare to fork out some cash for certain activities.

Boy Painting T-shirt - Singapore Cruise

For example, bowling costs S$10 per game and it’s S$22 to buy a t-shirt to paint on — but at least you’ll get to keep it! We also recommend booking slots for the karaoke room early in advance because demand is really high.

People at Brazilian Carnival Dance Class - Singapore Cruise

If you’re looking to save a few bucks, try the free workout classes instead! Choose from yoga to a couple of dance classes like funk line dancing, hip hop dance, Brazilian carnival dance, and traditional flamenco dance.

We didn’t have time to try them all so we went for the Brazilian carnival dance where we learned different types of dances like the salsa and samba. It’s a one-hour class so expect a lot of hip-shaking, spinning, and sweating. Remember to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated!

People at Waterslide Park - Genting Dream

While we can’t splash around in the sea, we can definitely do so at the on-board waterslide park. There are six different slides to choose from — my personal favourite being the donut-shaped slide which opens up mid-way, allowing you a glimpse of the blue sky before diving back to darkness and into the water.

Girl in Hot Tub - Singapore Cruise

Besides the water slides, there are also pools and hot tubs for you to swim and “chill” in leisurely.

People on High Obstacle Course - Singapore Cruise

But if you don’t want to get wet, try the ziplines, rock climbing wall, high obstacle course, mini-golf, ping pong, or even giant chess.

Girl Playing Mini-golf - Genting Dream

You could even set up a friendly basketball match in the SportsPlex too.

Girl Playing Basketball at SportsPlex - Singapore Cruise

Or dance and party your hearts out to popular hits played by DJs all through the night at Zouk Beach Club.

Party on Dance Floor - Genting Dream

Bonus — Visit the Captain’s Bridge

Controls at Captain's Bridge - Singapore Cruise

Before covid hit, there were organised tours to the captain’s bridge — a control room where the captain and his crew navigate the ship.

Girl Looking at Captain's Bridge from Viewing Room - Singapore Cruise

But due to social distancing restrictions, the tours stopped and we don’t have that luxury anymore. So we were actually glad to discover this hidden gem on board to find out what it’s like!

Girl Looking at Ship Replica in Captain's Bridge Viewing Room - Singapore Cruise

Head up to deck 15 via the lift (forward lobby) and walk past Crystal Life fitness. Turn left and walk all the way to the end. You’ll find a small, hidden room with a clear view of the captain’s bridge, plus a really cool mini replica of the ship to admire!

Entertainment

Couple Doing Balancing Act - Genting Dream

Every day, a newsletter would be delivered to your cabin — with various show and programme schedules so you can plan your day to catch them all!

*Note: The timings are in local (SG) time.

Dance Performance - Singapore Cruise

One highlight not to be missed is definitely the Yin.Yang performance at the Zodiac Theatre. It blends eastern and western entertainment, featuring a world-class array of performances from balancing acts to contemporary dances.

Singing Performance - Genting Dream

I was deeply impressed by one performer in particular, Tong Shaohan, who wowed us with his unique double vocals — singing both female and male parts in a duet.

We were truly shocked, yet in awe when we found out this beautifully dressed lady who sang in a high-pitched voice turned out to be an extremely talented man.

*Pro-tip: Arrive earlier as doors close 10 minutes before showtime and seats are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Dream Boys Performance - Singapore Cruise

Apart from the Yin.Yang show, we also had a sneak peek of Dream Boys (which isn’t new), but is set to make a comeback sometime in July.

Dining Experiences

On the Genting Dream, there are more than 20 dining options including restaurants, cafes and bars — not all are free though, so take note!

Inclusive Restaurants — Complimentary

The Lido Halal Food Buffet - Genting Dream

These are the places where you can eat your fill without any charges.

As mentioned above, Genting Dream has an internationally halal-certified kitchen. However, it’s only limited to food items in The Lido restaurant.

Jain Food Buffet - Genting Dream

But don’t fret because there are still plenty of cuisines to choose from, such as Western, Chinese, and even Jain — for vegetarians with a strict diet of not consuming any food produced underground (including potatoes and carrots).

Girl Eating Dim Sum - Singapore Cruise

For other non-halal options, there’s also the Dream Dining Room Lower and Upper which serve Western and Chinese menus respectively.

*Note: Check the daily newsletter for restaurant breakfast, lunch, and dinner timings. You’ll also be charged an extra S$15 for a second meal during the same meal period.

Specialty Restaurants — Charges Apply

Chef Cooking Food at Umi Uma - Singapore Cruise

The food might be more pricey (from S$60), but speaking from experience, it’s really worth it! During our time on the cruise, we tried two specialty restaurants: Umi Uma (Japanese teppanyaki ) and Bistro (Western).

We ordered the Emperor (steak and seafood) and Samurai (chicken and salmon) set from Umi Uma where the chef cooked our dishes before us. The meat was cooked perfectly and not chewy at all! The salmon also had a flavourful, buttery taste 😋.

Umi Uma Meal with Steak and Fish - Genting Dream

At Bistro, we had a full four-course meal with a seafood salad appetiser, pumpkin soup, and a choice of seafood tower or braised beef cheeks, before ending it off with some sweet panna cotta!

Girl Eating Seafood and Beef - Singapore Cruise

Other dining places include Silk Road Chinese Restaurant, Hot Pot, Lido Outdoor Hotpot and Grill, and Crystal Life Cuisine.

*Pro-tip: Reserve in advance as restaurants can be fully booked during peak hours.

Cafes and Bars — Charges Apply

Girl Holding Cocktail - Genting Dream

Besides restaurants, you can grab some light meals at cafes like Lobby Cafe and Blue Lagoon, or even cool down at Gelateria with some homemade gelato.

There are also various bars all around the cruise for alcohol-lovers — open all day till late. Check out Bar 360 for drinks and live music, Mixt for its innovative cocktails, or Tributes which has indoor and outdoor seating coupled with entertaining performances.

Accommodation

Genting Dream offers various room options, from balcony to oceanview staterooms and even palace suites.

Balcony Deluxe Stateroom

Balcony Deluxe Stateroom on Cruise - Singapore Cruise

We stayed in a Balcony Deluxe Stateroom which consisted of a queen-sized bed, a large sofa, a bathroom, and of course, a balcony overlooking the sea. To be honest, I was really surprised by how spacious the room is.

Bathroom with Bath tub - Singapore Cruise

We were also lucky to find a bathtub in our bathroom (apparently, not every room has it) and the dual-tap sink was way bigger than the one in my home.

Sunset View on Cruise - Genting Dream

But the best part of the room would have to be the balcony — where we got a gorgeous view of the sunrise.

Cost: From ~S$550/pax for three nights

Palace Suite

We didn’t have time to tour the Palace Suite but this is what it’ll look like:

Palace Suite Room on Cruise - Singapore Cruise

It looks pretty similar to the Balcony Deluxe Stateroom, but the private balcony is twice as big! Staying in a palace suite also gives guests certain perks like access to exclusive restaurants and programmes, as well as a 24-hour butler service 😏.

Cost: From ~S$1,100/pax for three nights

Is Resorts World Cruises’ Genting Dream Worth Checking Out?

Resorts World Cruises Main Deck - Genting Dream

It’s been a very long time since I’ve been on a cruise (I’m talking about 10 years ago-long), so I was really excited to just hop onto a ship once again!

I was glad that the water slides still remained and I could have fun like a kid again without any reserve. Being older now, I could also appreciate the fine dining experience of a full-course meal and of course, drinking alcohol 🍷.

Girl Eating Breakfast Buffet - Singapore Cruise

The halal-certified food also didn’t taste any different from usual and I stuffed myself with plenty of different options. The highlight of my cruise though was interacting with the performers when they weren’t on stage and discovering more about their culture.

Fun fact: Do you know why Brazilians dance so well? According to my Brazilian dance instructor, Gabrielle, most kids there start learning from 10 years old!

Girl on Balcony with Sea View - Genting Dream

With Resorts World Cruises as a new cruise line, we now have more options to set sail from Singapore’s ports. Although we didn’t dock anywhere this time, the automatic time change when we were near Indonesia made us feel like we were overseas.

Starting 1 July, the cruise will also sail internationally to Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand! You can make your reservations online with prices starting from ~S$149 per person (book by 3 July 2022) 🤩.

Business Insider

Travelers booked the residential cruise of their dreams. Now, some doubt it'll happen — and say they've waited months for refunds.

  • Victoria Cruises Line is selling apartments on a residential ship that would sail around the world indefinitely.
  • The launch of the Victoria Majestic, advertised as a floating retirement home, has been repeatedly delayed.
  • Business Insider spoke to nine buyers who've asked for refunds — but only one has received their money.

Randy and Kit Cassingham sold everything for a dream: to live out their retirement years on a residential cruise ship.

They sold family heirlooms, lifelong collectibles, and their Colorado "dream" home of 20 years with views of the Rockies. Randy, 64, re-homed his cat. Kit's was so old that she had to put her down.

"Those are really hard things to do," Kit, 69, said. "But we're really committed to this lifestyle."

But the Victoria Majestic ship, where the married couple planned to rent a $7,200-a-month suite, never departed last December as planned. It was the trip's fourth launch delay in just 10 months.

Now, instead of peeping polar bears in Norway or snorkeling off Caribbean islands as part of an indefinite itinerary at sea, the Cassinghams say they are struggling to get repayment for their $10,000 deposit to the cruise company, Victoria Cruises Line.

The Cassinghams aren't alone. Business Insider spoke to four couples and three solo travelers who said they gave up hope on the Victoria Majestic and requested deposit refunds. Only one person said they received repayment. The rest said they were still waiting — including five people who requested refunds more than four months ago.

Victoria Cruises Line, for its part, has pushed its latest launch date to July 26. But as of last month, there was still no ship: The company said it would need to reach higher occupancy levels to charter a vessel for the Victoria Majestic.

Once chartered, the ship would embark from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, then travel to more than 200 destinations and 115 countries — including Taipei, Taiwan; Douala, Cameroon; and Mykonos, Greece — for about 2 ½ years before circumnavigating the globe again, Victoria Cruises Line has said.

Victoria Cruises Line declined to comment on customers' claims of delayed refunds, citing pending legal proceedings.

"As the solution to the problematic cases is not the internet and print media, customers who have any problems with VCL have the possibility to initiate legal proceedings as stated in the contract," the company said in a statement.

Victoria Cruises promised an all-inclusive, affordable life at sea

A new crop of residential cruise companies has been advertising floating condos with price tags exceeding $100,000. Victoria Cruises has taken a more accessible approach, offering rentable cabins instead for as low as $3,840 a month.

Unlike some other companies, which have been building custom residential ships or buying used vessels, Victoria Cruises planned to lease a 1,350-guest ship, formerly Holland America's Veendam, sales manager Gabor Nagy-Ferenc told BI in an email in February 2023.

At the time, Nagy-Ferenc said travelers would have to sign a minimum six-month lease. He said the company was targeting passengers 65 years or older who would live in the "retirement home on the water" indefinitely.

Brochures and other marketing materials for the cruise promised that in between destinations, travelers could relax at the ship's two pools, refine their serve at the tennis court, and dine on beef tenderloin with polenta and truffle sauce at the Italian restaurant on board.

To encourage lengthy stays, the cruise company has offered a 40% discount on monthly rent for passengers who signed leases lasting a minimum of 37 months.

Victoria Cruises attracted retired cruisers

The opportunity to live a discounted life at sea lured Florida husband-and-wife Bill and Carol Plaut, both 77 years old. The self-described cruise lovers said they retired about 20 years ago.

In August 2023, the couple put their home on the market. Two days later, they paid Victoria Cruises a $15,000 deposit to secure a $7,200-a-month suite, according to a copy of their wire transfer viewed by BI. They began getting travel vaccinations, stocking up on medications, and getting rid of belongings in preparation for the cruise.

"Cruising is so expensive, and Victoria Cruises made this seem affordable for us," Carol told BI. "We decided this would be our last great adventure, our last big hurrah."

Will, 70, also sold his home last year in anticipation of boarding the "Victoria Majestic" in December. (Will asked to be identified by his first name; BI knows his full name).

Will said he's an experienced cruiser, retiree, and widower with no children who was excited by the opportunity to live at sea.

"I have no responsibilities to anybody right now," he told BI.

So, in August 2023, Will put a $10,000 deposit down for a $5,280-a-month cabin, a copy of his rental agreement reviewed by BI shows. He sold his home in Washington two months later.

"Victoria Cruises would've been cheaper than living at home with the freedom of no home, car, bills, internet payments, or insurance," he said. "It was clearly very economical."

Customers' dreams of starting the New Year on the Victoria Majestic quickly fizzled

Victoria Cruises announced in an October 1 email to customers that it would postpone its December launch, citing issues with occupancy levels.

The email said it had been targeting an 80% occupancy rate before chartering the ship, according to a copy of the message viewed by Business Insider.

Occupancy levels had dropped to 63% in September 2023 — down from 72% three months prior — due to "misbookings" and cancellations related to "illness, death, and financial reasons," Marco Benigni, an operation manager with Victoria Cruises, wrote in the email.

At that point, Will gave up hope on Victoria Cruises. He asked the company to refund his $10,000 deposit in a November 2023 email viewed by BI.

In booking materials posted to its site, Victoria Cruises said customers would receive a full refund within 90 days of a request, as long as they canceled at least 30 days before embarkation.

120 days after Will first asked for a refund, he said he was still waiting for reimbursement.

"To be honest, I don't think Victoria Cruises has the money," Will said. "I can lawyer up and drain my enthusiasm for life. But in the end, there'll be nothing. I won't get any money."

Will is one of nine people who told BI they are waiting on refunds from Victoria Cruises Line. BI reviewed the customers' refund request forms and email correspondence with Victoria Cruises.

Taryna Wawn, a 64-year-old resident of Australia, said she doubts she'll get a refund.

"I refuse to let it get to me at this age," Wawn told BI. She and her husband, Dennis, 65, have been waiting for their $10,000 deposit since October 2023. "We still need to live life and not let it get us down. It's really made both of us angry."

In a February 2 blog post, the company blamed repayment delays on customer errors on the refund form — like "illegible" handwriting or failure to provide accurate bank wire instructions — as well as a Google Drive error.

Victoria Cruises said it was impacted by " Google Drive's data loss " in December 2023. Customers who canceled their contract after September 1, 2023, were asked to resend their refund form and rental agreement, which would make the processing "slower," the company said. (Google declined to comment, instead directing BI to a post in late November 2023 that said the Google Drive issue "only affected local file changes that had yet to be synced to Drive." It released a solution a week later).

Bill Plaut said he was skeptical that Google Drive was to blame for delays, calling it "one of many excuses."

At least one customer, Janie Coffey, has received a refund, however.

Coffey, 55, said she sent Victoria Cruises dozens of emails over the course of several months, including three iterations of her refund request form, all with different banking information.

When the company ultimately emailed her proof of the wire transfer, she noticed it had mistyped her account number.

"I chose Victoria Cruises because my dream is to travel to every country in the world," Coffey told BI. "I thought they were just messy business people. Now I'm looking at everything in hindsight and wondering: Was it a scam from the beginning?"

Coffey received her refund in December 2023 — four months after her initial request.

It was $28 short of the full $10,000, according to a copy of the transfer.

After Will sold his home, he said he "wandered around" before temporarily relocating to France. But he hasn't given up on his cruising dreams: In May, he hopes to board competitor Villa Vie's residential cruise ship .

Unlike Victoria Cruises, the competing startup says it has already acquired a ship for its indefinite cruise around the world.

Some Victoria Cruises customers are now betting on a rival cruise line

Villa Vie has drawn interest from other former Victoria Cruises hopefuls, including the Cassinghams and Holly Hennessy, 67, who emailed Victoria Cruises her refund request form in October.

A number of new residential cruise ship ventures have popped up in recent years, but none have launched yet.

In November 2023, Life at Sea Cruises canceled its never-ending voyage before it ever embarked, citing a lack of a ship and investor withdrawal due to "unrest in the Middle East." Former would-be travelers are now demanding a criminal probe into Life at Sea , accusing the company of withholding about $16 million in customer refunds.

Startup Storylines has promised a new luxury floating condominium, but has yet to begin construction on its $900 million, 18-deck ship. In 2023, nine former employees, consultants, and investors told BI they doubted it would ever be built.

The World , launched in 2002, is the only residential cruise ship in operation. But with limitations: Only about 10 to 12 of its 547 cabins are resold annually between $2 million and $15 million. Buyers must have a net worth of at least $10 million to even be considered.

With costs that high, many travelers had hoped Victoria Cruises could be the next best option.

But on February 2, the company reported a 53% occupancy level — still well below its target of 80%.

Moscow/Zelenograd and New Moscow

genting dream cruise july 2023

  • 4 Events, Festivals

Zelenograd and New Moscow are two large parts of Moscow city, that lie (often far) outside consolidated residential zone of the city, which lies within and just beyond the MKAD (Moscow Ring Road).

Zelenograd was added in Moscow in 1968 as one of the leading scientific centers. New Moscow was added to Moscow in 2012, forming Novomoskovky and Troitskiy Administrativniy Okrugs with plans of new vast expansion. New Moscow territory is yet to change according to its new city status. Even though suburbial kind construction intensifies in Novomoskovsky Administrativniy Okrug, Troitskiy Administrativniy Okrug still mostly has a rural feel.

By plane [ edit ]

Vnukovo and Ostafyevo airports are situated in New Moscow proper, though from Ostafyevo airport you still have to go through the "old" Moscow. It is possible to get from Sheremetyevo to Zelenograd without going to the old city - you have to change to 400 minibus on Leningrad highway or on local train on Planernaya. From Domodedovo airport you'll have to go through the old city anyway (the route through Domodedovo and Podolsk will take more time).

By train [ edit ]

Local trains connect Zelenograd with Leningrad Train Station, Tver, Klin and Konakovo. Local trains from Kiev Train Station pass through northern part of New Moscow between Novoperedelkino and Krekshino. To go to Zosimova Pustyn you may want to go all the way to Bekasovo, but trains there are infrequent. It is possible to get to New Moscow through Podolsk, but you'll have to change to bus there.

By bus [ edit ]

Most frequent bus to Zelenograd is bus 400 from Rechnoi Vokzal. It has special pricing. Buses are primary way of public transport to get to New Moscow, new buses are often added. Most buses start from Yugo-Zapadnaya and Tepliy Stan metroes, and Podolsk train station. Troitsk serves as a bus hub.

By car [ edit ]

Zelenograd is accessible by M10 highway. Major highways in New Moscow are M3, A101, Warsaw highway Podolsk - Kresty (joining with A101), first "Beton Ring" A107 and Borovsk highway Peredelkino - Vnukovo - to join with M3. M10 and A101 are often highly congested, M3 may be less prone to it, except Moscow vicinity, and crossing with A107, A107 is congested near M3 crossing, which is northwest of New Moscow; Warsaw highway is congested in Podolsk, and you'll have to pass congested M2 to get there from MKAD.

The Highest-Paid Actors Of 2023

“Margot Robbie will be receiving ‘Barbie’ checks for the rest of her life” but Adam Sandler was Hollywood’s top-earning star last year. Here’s how much the Sandman and other top stars banked.

By matt craig , forbes staff.

H ollywood history will remember 2023 as the year of Barbenheimer . Since their releases on the same day in July, Barbie and Oppenheimer have dominated the box office, the awards circuit, and countless essays and op-eds. At the Oscars on Sunday, Oppenheimer is expected to sweep most of the major categories, including Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey, Jr.), and Best Director (Christopher Nolan), and Best Picture.

But even with those two blockbusters— Barbie grossed $1.4 billion worldwide and Oppenheimer was just shy of $1 billion—there were still plenty of hours left in the year for other entertainment. And if Netflix’s annual engagement report reveals anything, it’s that many people spent an astronomical amount of time watching Adam Sandler movies.

Since signing his first $250 million four-picture deal with the streamer in 2014, the 57-year-old Sandler has starred in eight movies for Netflix and produced several more through his Happy Madison production company. The majority of his back catalog of comedies are now licensed to the platform as well. In the first six months of 2023 alone, Netflix subscribers spent more than 500 million hours watching Sandler’s movies.

Or, as Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos explained when he re-upped the collaboration in 2020, “There’s no such thing as too much Sandler.”

Accordingly, Netflix has rewarded the prolific funnyman with not only one of the most lucrative contracts in the entertainment industry, but one with enormous creative freedom. Sandler’s three movies in 2023 included Murder Mystery 2 with Jennifer Aniston (who is ranked No. 6 this year), filmed in Paris and Hawaii as is his “ paid vacations ” custom. He also released You’re So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah starring his wife and daughters, and the animated movie Leo . Combined with his 44 stand-up comedy shows across the country, Sandler earned an estimated $73 million last year (after paying fees to his agent, manager and lawyer). It’s enough to make him the highest-paid actor of 2023 by a comfortable margin.

DON’T MESS WITH THE SANDMAN

For the first half of 2023, netflix viewers streamed more than 500 million hours of adam sandler movies. here’s what they like to watch.

In total, the 10 highest-paid stars combined to earn $449 million in 2023. They come almost exclusively from movies, rather than television, thanks in part to the writers’ and actors’ strikes that shut down Hollywood for half the year and delayed (or shortened) a number of TV seasons, and partially due to the now decades-long precedent that top movie stars can command up to $20 million up front for a single movie plus a percentage of its profits.

In the long run, starring in a hit movie at the box office remains Hollywood’s golden ticket. Unlike Netflix, which pays actors a premium fee up front and buys out their back-end profit participation over the next two years, a hit theatrical movie can continue to generate money in perpetuity—meaning actors with profit participation have no cap on the amount they can ultimately earn.

For example, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the stars of Barbie , are ranked No. 2 and No. 4 respectively on this year’s top 10 based solely on their estimated earnings from box office, video on-demand and the movie’s first streaming window. Their total compensation for starring in a cultural phenomenon will be considerably higher.

“I promise, Margot Robbie will be receiving Barbie checks for the rest of her life,” says one agent.

Robbie’s success is an outlier in another way. At 33, she is the youngest person on the highest-paid actors list by a decade, with the average age of the other nine north of 52. Older actors benefit from decades of residuals from past hits—such as Aniston with Friends —and also because Hollywood salaries are established by precedent, meaning the going rate for top stars is expected to match or rise from whatever they made for their last picture.

This grandfathering of salaries often makes it difficult for younger actors to break into the upper echelon. The same is true for actors of color, of whom only one is represented in the top 10 for 2023 (Denzel Washington at No. 10). Admittedly, it was a year in which many of the perennial highest-paid Black actors did not release a major movie. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson focused on his entrepreneurial endeavors such as Teramana tequila and the XFL, while his frequent on-screen collaborator Kevin Hart devoted more time to his stand-up comedy. And Will Smith, once the king of summer blockbusters, was still rehabbing his image in the wake of the 2022 Oscars slap . Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson did most of their work on streaming services, where upfront fees are high but potential upside is capped. Still, blockbuster movies fronted by Black, Asian and Hispanic actors remain few and far between.

“The bottom line is, Hollywood is still a white-dominated industry,” says Darnell Hunt, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost at UCLA and the author of the Hollywood Diversity Report. “There are a few actors of color who can command those salaries, and they’ve established a track record to command that. But the problem is, how many actors have been given the opportunity to develop that track record?"

Looking at the current release calendar, it’s quite likely that 2024’s ranking of the highest-paid actors will look very different. Most movies take years to develop, so while Robbie, Tom Cruise (No. 3 this year), and Leonardo DiCaprio (No. 7) set off to their next projects, 2024’s theatrical slate will feature Smith in Bad Boys 4 , Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 3 . Several members of the impressive young cast of Dune 2 are also fronting multiple movies in the coming year, including Zendaya, Austin Butler and Anya Taylor-Joy. Plus, blockbuster TV shows like Yellowstone , Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Bear will have stars in the earnings mix.

Beyond the hefty salaries, what’s truly been earned by this year’s highest-paid stars is greater power within the industry, particularly the ability to negotiate for even more favorable deal terms on their next project. In an industry where pay can rise or fall based on each performance. this list represents a snapshot of who has the most leverage in Hollywood in 2024.

1. Adam Sandler • $73 million ($97 million gross)

In the first three months after Murder Mystery 2 was released on Netflix, the streamer reported that it was watched for a total of 173 million hours across the world and ranked in the Top 10 in 90 different countries. The sequel was part of a very busy year for the Sandman, who did more than 40 stand-up comedy tour dates in 2023 to go with three Netflix film projects.

2. Margot Robbie • $59 million ($78 million gross)

The cultural phenomenon that was Barbie took off last July and never really slowed down, grossing $1.45 billion at the worldwide box office and untold millions more in licensing and partnerships. As both the producer of the movie and its star, Robbie cashed in on roughly 12.5% of all back-end profits, which Forbes estimates will more than $60 million. Her now red-hot production company LuckyChap was also behind last year's much-buzzed-about satire Saltburn , and in February Robbie signed a new exclusive first-look deal with Warner Bros., the studio behind Barbie .

3. Tom Cruise • $45 million ($53 million gross)

The 61-year-old action star not only defies conventional wisdom when it comes to his outrageous stunt work, but also the evolving norms around how an actor gets paid. Cruise is one of the last, if not the very last, movie star who can still command the vaunted "first-dollar gross" deal, meaning he gets paid a percentage of box office and other revenues beginning the day it’s released, before the studio even recoups its money. In 2023, he cashed in on the latest Mission: Impossible movie and continued receiving streaming and on-demand profits for 2022's Top Gun: Maverick . And studios still clearly want to be in the Tom Cruise business—in January, he signed a new development deal with Warner Bros.

4. Ryan Gosling • $43 million ($50 million gross)

He may be just Ken, but the supporting role in the year's biggest movie was good enough for an Oscar nomination and one of the biggest paydays of the 43-year-old Gosling’s career. As an added bonus, his power ballad from the movie, “I’m Just Ken,” has been streamed over 100 million times on Spotify.

4. Matt Damon • $43 million ($50 million gross)

Many around Hollywood are rooting for Affleck and Damon's upstart Artists Equity studio to succeed, given its promise to help crew members and other below-the-line talent share in movies’ profits. Their first project Air —which starred Damon and was directed by Affleck—sold to Amazon before it ever went into production for an estimated $130 million. That figure was well above the movie's budget, ensuring there would be plenty of money to go around. In addition, the 53-year-old actor took a mere $4 million salary for his supporting role in Oppenheimer , far below his normal rate, in exchange for a small slice of the movie’s substantial profits.

6. Jennifer Aniston • $42 million ($56 million gross)

Friends residuals ensure that the artist forever known as Rachel Green doesn’t have to “go get one of those job things” ever again—yet the 54-year-old actress continues to star in both TV and movies. Aniston reportedly makes as much as $2 million for acting and executive producing each episode of The Morning Show on AppleTV+, and appeared alongside Adam Sandler in Murder Mystery 2 for Netflix, all while promoting brands like Uber Eats, Pvolve Fitness, Vital Proteins, and her own haircare line, LolaVie.

Joel C Ryan/Invision/AP

7. Leonardo DiCaprio • $41 million ($48 million gross)

The 49-year-old Oscar winner may have been snubbed by the Academy for his performance in Killers of the Flower Moon , but he’s doing just fine on the balance sheet. His starring role in the Martin Scorsese epic included a hefty salary as well as a buy-out of his theatrical profit participation once the movie hits AppleTV+.

Chris Pizzello/Invision/AP

7. Jason Statham • $41 million ($48 million gross)

Statham has been throwing punches, kicks and quips at every man, megalodon or Rock in his path for the last 20 years, and the 56-year-old actor’s earning power has never been higher. In 2023, he fronted three major big-budget franchises— Fast X , Meg 2: The Trench and Expend4bles —plus the Guy Ritchie spy caper Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre . And he’s currently the star of the highest-grossing movie of 2024, The Beekeeper .

Marilla Sicilia/Mondadori Portfolio/Getty Images

9. Ben Affleck • $38 million ($45 million)

When he’s not busy hawking donuts and plugging his new boy band in commercials for Dunkin’, Affleck serves as CEO of the studio startup Artists Equity (to Matt Damon’s chief creative officer). The 51-year-old multihyphenate directed and co-starred in Air , which grossed $90 million at the box office before moving to Amazon Prime Video.

George Pimentel/WireImage/Getty Images

10. Denzel Washington • $24 million ($28 million gross)

Tom Cruise isn’t the only sixtysomething movie star who can open a movie. The third installment of the Equalizer franchise was released in 2023, with all three entries crossing $190 million at the box office for one reason: Denzel Washington. In addition, the two-time Oscar winner’s robust back catalog going back nearly 40 years also produces a steady stream of cash each year for the 69-year-old actor.

METHODOLOGY

Estimations were calculated through interviews with agents, lawyers, managers, executives and industry experts, as well as data sources such as IMDBPro and Polestar. The figures represent pretax earnings for the calendar year 2023, minus fees for representation – 10% to agents, 10% to managers and 5% to lawyers, per industry standard, although some actors do not have all three.

Actors were credited for compensation on projects in the year they were released, despite the fact that often up front fees are paid when a movie is filmed, which could be years in the past, and back end participation is often paid several years into the future.

Additionally, the ranking only includes earnings related to entertainment—acting, producing, directing, or other forms of performance (such as stand-up comedy). Entrepreneurial endeavors not related to entertainment, such as beauty or spirits brands, were not counted.
