The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Best Overall Men’s Travel Pants: Bluffworks Envoy Lightweight Travel Pants
  • Best Budget Men’s Travel Pants: UNIONBAY Rainier Travel Chinos
  • Best Travel Pants for Adventuring In: LIVSN Ecotrek Trail Pants
  • Best Travel Pants to Look Like a Local: Western Rise Evolution 2 Pants
  • Most Comfortable Travel Pants: Proof 72-Hour Merino Travel Pant

Bluffworks Envoy Lightweight Travel Pants

  • Fabric 57% recycled polyester, 33% polyester, 10% spandex
  • Fabric weight 210 gsm
  • Fit True to size
  • Weight 15 oz.

Product Badge

  • Lightweight fabric dries quickly
  • Wrinkle resistant
  • Looks and feels more recreational than the Ascenders
  • Anti-UV properties
  • More comfortable than most pants on the list
  • The rear device pocket is uncomfortable to sit on a phone in the back phone pocket
  • Lacks a DWR

Bluffworks’ Ascender Chino has been at or near the top of our travel pants list for four years now. Our main gripe with the Ascender is the heavy lean into the business side of “business casual.” That and the sheer number of pockets sometimes confounded our sleep-deprived travel brains. But now with fewer pockets and less golf-course chino, Bluffworks nailed the perfect travel pants with their Envoy Lightweight Travel Pants iteration ($125).

Trimming the fat started with the pockets. The Envoy drops a pocket to give us nine, but all are functional, and five of them zip shut. Two stealth pockets zip inside the hand pockets, both rear pockets zip shut, and a device pocket zips closed off the thigh and is a great place to store your documents.

Behind the right rear pocket, the Envoy tucks a drop-in style phone pocket below the waistband. This is a brilliant design that is easy to access, yet deep enough to curb sticky fingers. We did find it more comfortable to store the phone on the thigh when seated.

The Envoys close shut with a zippered fly and metal button sewn into the elastic, belt-friendly waistband. In case you left the belt at home, silicone tabs are welded to the inside of the waistband and help keep the pants from shifting down.

Instead of a 100% durable polyester fabric found in the Ascender Chino, the Envoy is constructed from a recycled polyester spun with 10% spandex, giving the pants a 4-way stretch. On the inside, all seams are overlocked and tacked down with a double stitch on the inseam to keep them from rubbing against the skin and reducing exposure to snags. The pants wear light and supple, and given that they don’t have a gusset sewn into the crotch, we found the Envoys very flexible if not the most comfortable pants on our list.

And that’s really where the Envoys shine. If nothing else, a travel pant should go unnoticed — both on you and among potential troublemakers. These pants wear effortlessly, yet are capable of storing all your essentials safely away.

If you haven’t tried Bluffworks before, we recommend looking at the Envoy Lightweights over the Ascenders. While the Ascenders have one more pocket (a passport sleeve on the inside of the left front pocket), only three of the 10 pockets zip shut. The styling of the Envoy has five pockets that zip shut and wears more casually without compromising its city chops.

UNIONBAY Rainier Travel Chinos

  • Fabric 94% nylon, 6% spandex
  • Fabric weight 173 gsm
  • Weight 13 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Comfortable
  • Security options
  • Well priced
  • Pants run long
  • Material tends to collect lint

Travel should never be about the gear. It should be about the experience. An Amazon darling, at $40 a pair, UNIONBAY’s Rainier Travel Pants are a steal, leaving more cash in the wallet for traveling.

True to size, the nylon-spandex blend offers just enough stretch for a full range of motion. The pants keep around the waist with a button and have traditional belt loops if you want to class them up with a belt.

Three nylon zipper pockets pair with deep hand pockets. With two in the back and one on the upper right leg, they’re big enough to secure a passport, the latest iPhone, a notepad, or all of them together.

The Rainiers are rated to 50 UPF and feel durable in the hand, making them acceptable for activities like hiking. The outermost layer is lightly brushed and tends to collect lint and show stains quicker than other pants we tested, but they wash up easily and the 170 gsm fabric is quick to dry.

While a simple pant when compared to the Bluffworks attention to detail, these chino-style pants hit the core elements we looked for when evaluating the best men’s travel pants. If you’re looking for a budget pair of travel pants that pack up tight and breeze from the tarmac to restaurants (and maybe a light hike in between), these are it.

The Rainiers are available in four colors: charcoal, navy, black, and khaki.

LIVSN Ecotrek Trail Pants

  • Fabric 70% Blue Ocean nylon, 25% nylon, 5% spandex

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Form and function meet the apex pant
  • Bomber hardware
  • Tons of pockets with versatile security options
  • DWR is negligible
  • Styling is less formal

LIVSN’s Ecotrek Trail Pant  ($129) brings more stretch, lighter weight, and a more athletic design to their tried and true Flex Canvas Pants. And while these new pants are great for climbing, hiking, or other fast-paced activities in warmer climates, we find they hit all the marks for what we love in travel pants too.

Let’s start with the many pockets, most of which are zippered. Both rear pockets close with a zipper, offering some much-needed peace of mind. Angling off the back of the left thigh is an additional, horizontal zippered pocket, which is great for gadgets or a small wallet.

Both of the mesh hand pockets have coin sleeves to prevent loose currency or keys from shifting around, and the left front hand pocket has a hidden zippered pocket large enough to protect your phone. Rounding out the seven pockets is a reinforced multitool pocket sitting on the right thigh. With so many pocket options, there’s a place for everything that feels designed with purpose instead of over-engineered.

The pocket configuration is dialed, but what sells these pants are the little details. The fabric’s synthetic blend doesn’t feel stiff, and the smartly tailored material walks quietly, fitting our testers with an ergonomic, yet surprisingly athletic fit.

A metal button closes the front and is backed with a leather pledget to prevent busting out. The Ecotrek Trail pants have belt loops, but if you forget your belt, they include a drawstring that hides inside the waistband. The cuffs are reinforced around the heel and so is the utility tool pocket.

While they don’t have a robust DWR, the material breathes very well. When things heat up, the pant legs roll up and keep under a buttoned strap that’s been sewn with reflective tape. These little details add up pretty quickly to make the Ecotrek a stellar pant.

Turn the pants inside out, and you really get an appreciation for the quality and care taken to make these pants. All seams are overlocked, with the flat-felled inseam. This kind of stitching increases durability where you need it and comfort where you want it.

Sustainability is core to LIVSN’s line of clothes, and the  Ecotrek Trail pant  walks the talk. The material is woven from Oceanflex fabric (70% recycled fishing buoys recovered from the ocean), and the YKK zipper taping is made from recycled ocean plastic. The rest is 25% nylon and 5% spandex for stretch.

If you are looking for lightweight, stretchy, durable pants, the LIVSN Ecotrek Trail Pant stands out as one of the best men’s travel pants on the market and can tackle a wide range of activities.

The Ecotrek Trail pants are available in olive, caramel, and charcoal colors, and they come in a range of sizes up to a 40-inch waist and a 34-inch inseam.

Western Rise Evolution 2 Pants

  • Fabric 90% nylon, 10% elastane, woven in Sweden, cut and sewn in the USA
  • Fabric weight 107 gsm
  • Weight 11 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Lightweight material breathes just as well as the first
  • More durability than the first iteration
  • Fantastic fit and construction
  • Better mobility than the first iteration
  • New fabric feels slightly stiffer (breaks in over time)
  • Patch on the inside pocket can feel sticky against the legs (they are changing it to a print)
  • Single security pocket is limiting for some travelers

The first iteration of the Evolution was a GearJunkie staple around the office. Simple, functional, durable — it’s what we recommended to all our friends who ask us, “What’s the best pant for everyday use?” This year, Western Rise updated the Evolution 2.0 ($128) with more stretch, and they are only all the better for it.

This new bump in elastane gives the Evolution 2.0 significant four-way stretch and increased flexibility without sacrificing durability. The jean-like five-pocket design wears more like denim but has the durability of a hiking pant. In fact, one of our editors wore their pair to the top of the Grand Teton.

At the core of the pant is the nylon-elastane blend with a trim jean cut. The nylon fibers are softened by running them through an air-texturized process and then weaving them into a dynamic yarn. The material has a durable weave that mimics denim (and feels less “khaki”).

The DWR coating — or maybe DBR (Durable Beer Resistance) — is outstanding. We wore these pants to Oktoberfest last year where they took the brunt of the fickle Bavarian weather and a rowdy beer hall.

Reach around back, and you’ll find a double pocket on the right, with a hidden zipper pocket that’s large enough to swallow your passport. Western Rise expanded the front coin pocket and made it big enough to holster the largest phone on the market.

After your trip, roll them up and watch them disappear in your luggage. They tick all the boxes for traveling and were the envy of our photographer while cycling through Colombia.

There aren’t many reasons to ding the Evolutions; the material on the new pant feels stiff out of the box but that softens up over time. To help differentiate its pant models (which all have a similar cut and color), Western Rise screened a patch on the inner left pocket. It can feel a little sweaty against the legs.

Aware of this issue, Western Rise is changing that label to a print going forward. One thing that hasn’t changed is the pocket configuration. Some will find the additional zipper pocket just the right amount of added security. Others will prefer more pockets to keep their EDCs. And that’s where we find the Evolution falls short. An extra security pocket would send this pant to the top of the list again.

If you want that Western Rise styling but with a wrinkle-resistant fabric, the Diversion pant ($168) is also a great pick. The double-knit canvas weighs 286 gsm, making it more durable overall but sacrificing packability.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This fantastic five-pocket jean-style pant has been on our list of the best men’s travel pants for 6 years now. For 2 of those years, they were our top pick. We use the Western Rise Evolution 2.0s as a benchmark for fit and comfort and we recommend them to friends looking for a do-everything pant that flies fashionably under the radar.

Proof 72-Hour Merino Travel Pant

  • Fabric 47% merino wool, 33% nylon, 14% polyester, 6% elastane
  • Fabric weight 247 gsm
  • Weight 16.5 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Gusseted crotch
  • Good fit and stretch
  • Pricey — $200 can buy you two (or three) other pants on the list
  • Weighs an ounce or two more than other similar pants
  • Lacks a dedicated device pocket

Merino pants? 100%. Proof is Huckberry’s in-house performance wear, with the 72-Hour line as their go-to travel clothes under the Proof name. New this year, Huckberry released the 72-Hour Travel Pant ($198), and while expensive, it has a lot of merits. We learned it’s all in the fabric.

Wool has natural antimicrobial, DWR, and UPF protection characteristics that we usually laud about when discussing base layers . Because wool wicks moisture, the pants breathe well and keep you feeling dry even in hot climates and sticky bus rides. It keeps the stench down and the comfort high. All things we look for when traveling.

This is the first merino wool pant we’ve seriously considered, and it makes a lot of sense. If you are going far with limited space, you need to trim the fat. And while cutting out extra shirts and pants may once have been a questionable decision, it’s a lot easier when one pair of pants delivers so well.

The design team gave some thoughtful reflection to the 72-Hour pant. Complimenting the five-pocket design is a hidden zippered pocket inside the right rear pocket. The panels are sewn together with a combination of comfortable overstitched inseams, flat-sewn gussets, and durable flat-felled side seams.

The pants are sewn together with a combination of flat-felled and welted overlocked joints, then finished with a robust DWR. All this tech stays under the radar with black hardware finishes.

As styling goes, we find the Proof 72-Hour Travel Pant to be on par with Western Rise’s Evolution 2’s, which around the office we can agree are one of the best styled pants available today. The comfort award, however, goes to the Proofs.

Teren Lightweight Traveler Pants

  • Fabric 88% nylon, 12% spandex
  • Fabric weight 154 gsm

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Pre-treated with an insect repellant
  • Stain resistant
  • Internal drawstring for extra waist security
  • Three zipper-closed pockets
  • Lightweight
  • Tanto-style pocket to clip your EDC
  • Magnetic closure catches on anything metal
  • No durable water repellant finish

Threading the needle between style, function, and durability, Teren’s Lightweight Traveler ($130) is our pick for folks who want one pant to do it all.

The Lightweight Traveler is a tapered chino-style pant with six pockets. Three pockets secure your goods with a zipper. Two zip shut vertically behind the front pockets and the third secures the right back pocket. The pants are washed in Permethrin to ward off critters. Plus, they’re antimicrobial, stain resistant, and offer UV protection.

Our editor Chris Carter wore his Lightweight Travelers on the Continental Divide thru-hike, where they withstood miles of intense bushwhacking through thorny, overgrown trails and post-holing through deep snow. Carter lauded the pants’ ability to stay stench-free for weeks on end.

After the adventure is done, the stain-release fabric readily releases dirt and grime in the wash. These chinos easily suit up for a night on the town.

The Lightweight Travelers ditch the classic button and use a pair of sewn-in magnets to close around the waist. While wearing the pants around town and doing weekend chores, the magnetic closure often got stuck on metal objects.

They snapped to my grocery cart, to my truck bed, to my knife, to loose screws while repairing my gate. Curious about the strength, I went into my garage and started hanging hardware off the pants. The magnet is strong enough to hold a hammer.

But, lean over to tie your shoes (or eat a big meal) and the magnetic fasteners slide apart easily. Stand up, and they pull right back together.

Yeah, the magnetic closure is different and takes some getting used to. Is it problematic? Maybe. The gauss, or magnetic induction, could demagnetize small metal springs in mechanical watches. Given the most popular watch is a smartwatch — this isn’t an issue for most of us. But magnets can also demagnetize credit cards and hotel room keys. We didn’t try to demagnetize a credit card, but it’s something to consider when zipping items in the front pockets.

Worried about the magnet holding the pants up? Backed with belt loops and an internal drawstring, the pants have plenty of options to keep them around the waist.

Other issues: The offset zippered front pockets drop into the same front hand pocket sleeve. They fight for the same real estate, compromising overall storage. We found these pockets a little challenging to access while seated in tight spaces.

For those looking for rain or spill protection, the Terens don’t sport a durable water repellant (DWR). But they do dry out quickly.

With so many pros, these are small cons. The spandex weave yields significant mobility while the nylon deflects catches and tears — all while keeping the pants just over 10 ounces. It’s a great combination of durability and flexibility in a quick-drying pant that packs down small. At 11 ounces, the Lightweight Traveler is truly lightweight, competing only with Western Rise’s Evolution 2’s.

KÜHL Suppressor Jogger

  • Fabric 85% nylon, 15% spandex
  • Fabric weight 165 gsm
  • Weight 12 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Light and packable
  • Durable and stretchy
  • KÜHL drop in style pockets are fantastic
  • Fabric is noisy
  • No button-no fly minimalism may not appeal to everyone
  • Only one zippered pocket on the backside

KÜHL has a strong reputation throughout the outdoor industry for making bomber, thoughtfully designed pieces. And its sub-$100 Suppressor Joggers exemplify those qualities in spades.

The 85% nylon, 15% spandex blend is lightweight, stretchy, breathable, and durable. Plus, a solid DWR treatment rebuffs Mother Nature’s fickle temperament.

Like any good pair of travel pants, the Suppressor’s sport well-thought-out pockets. The angled hand pockets are deep and easy to access while seated. A single stealth pocket zips behind the right back side, and drop-in pockets grace both thighs.

Drop-in pockets are our favorite design to haul devices. They snug the phone but keep your data within reach. The best of the batch fit on the backside of the leg, maintaining accessibility and minimizing the bounce. KÜHL has two of them. Riding down the back of the quads, they are perfect for clipping multitools, knives, or pens, and sheath a phone, passport, or tickets. And it’s these drop-in pockets that make the Suppressor our favorite pant to wear on the plane. Everything stays within easy reach.

If there’s any knock against the Suppressor Joggers , it’s that these are simple pull-on pants. No button, no fly — just an elastic waist and drawstring. On the flip side, this keeps things quick when moving through TSA – there’s no pulling off the belt and redressing after pat-downs.

Ornot Mission Pants

  • Fabric 95% nylon, 5% elastane
  • Fabric weight 232 gsm
  • Weight 14 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Gusseted design gives a great fit
  • Reflective details on cuffs
  • Made in USA
  • Not many – An extra pockets or a drop in phone sleeve, and these would be our top choice for travel pants

When it comes to fit and function, cyclists have it all figured out. Stretch, durability, DWR, and ergonomic pocket layout make a great commuter pant. Fall short on any of these, cyclists will be quick to call you out.

San Francisco-based Ornot hit all the paces with its Mission Shorts. This year, the brand released its beloved short in a pant. True to the brand, the Mission Pants ($148) pull off an effortlessly classy-looking pant. Minimalist aesthetics, five pockets (two that zip shut), and the rear pockets angle off the midline for easy access. The stealth thigh pocket zips contents securely off the back of the leg. The leeward position pegs the device to the leg while in the saddle.

We found the Mission Pants to be lighter than other commuter pants on the market. The 232 gsm fabric breathes well and moves with the body without feeling like a protective shell. They wear easy at the office and feel at home on the street. And if you grab a bike by the horns, both cuffs flip up to reveal reflective hits to keep you seen on the go.

We’ve been following this small brand for years and it keeps bringing its A-game to market. These garments are all made in the USA and offer a 1-year warranty. The brand’s Mission Pants are great on the bike … or not.

Jetty Acadia 2.0 Utility Pant

  • Fabric 100% polyester
  • Fabric weight 240 gsm
  • Weight 16 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Good stretch
  • Comfortable fit
  • Drawstring and belt loops
  • Only available in a 32 inseam
  • Pants stretch and lightly pill over time
  • Front occasionally unbuttons too easily

Jetty’s Acadia Utility Pant ($100) straddles the shoreline between board short and the boardroom. But don’t let its slick chino veneer dissuade you.

The 100% polyester material is warp-knitted, interlocking the poly fibers into a smooth-faced fabric. Jetty sewed in a gusset in the crotch to add extra room for the legs. The combination of cut and materials gives the Acadia an amazing amount of stretch in all directions.

And it also gives the pants fantastic wrinkle resistance. We’ve pulled our Acadias out of overstuffed bags and walked into meetings with deceivingly fresh-pressed-looking pants.

Two pockets zip shut on the backside to keep your goods protected, and the mesh hand pockets are deep. Riding down the right leg is a drop-in device pocket. There is plenty of room in the drop-in pocket, and plenty of room in the relaxed quads before they taper slightly to the bottom hem. This extra room in the thighs lets the phone bounce more than we’d like.

The Acadia Utility Pants close with a tarnished brass button embossed with the Jetty logo. A drawstring is sewn into the waistband so you won’t ever lose it in the wash. And in case you do need to go into the boardroom, Jetty ports the drawstring on both sides of the waistband, so you can tuck the drawstring on the inside of the pants for a polished look.

KETL Mountain Apparel Shenanigan Outdoor Pant

  • Fabric 96% nylon, 4% spandex
  • Fabric weight 156 gsm

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Integrated web belt
  • Three zippered pockets (two in back and one behind the thigh)
  • Deep mesh hand pockets
  • Quiet material
  • Lifetime free repair program
  • Free shipping and returns
  • Slim fit won’t appeal to some. Slimmest pant in the lineup
  • Front snap is weak
  • Metal belt clasp may invite a wanding at TSA

At $100, the KETL Mountain Apparel Shenanigan Outdoor Pants are a refreshing blend of style and tech and one helluva outdoor pant. The nylon twill is blended with a touch of spandex yielding room for adventure in a quiet yet bomber pant.

Should you decide to bring these trousers off-piste, the durable twill has a robust DWR, shunning even the wettest brush. Deep mesh hand pockets and zippered rear pockets make sure all your goods stay where you put them. A roomy device pocket zips shut along the right thigh.

To keep the pants up, an integrated web belt hooks over the button closure. For better (or worse) the belt is sewn into the pants and cannot be removed. KETL bonded a bead of silicon inside the waistband to prevent the pants from riding down. We found these pants stay glued to the backside while wearing a pack.

Across the board, KETL pants fit slim. If you have athletic calves and quads, these will feel snug. If you prefer a more relaxed fit, these probably won’t be a pant for you. What it lacks in room, it gives back in performance. The lack of extra material makes the Shenanigan a great choice for cycling. The durability, flexibility, and tapered fit soar on the mountain bike.

Available only online, KETL makes it easy to buy and return. They offer free shipping both ways and back up their products with a lifetime repair program. But trust us, you’ll want to keep a hold of your KETL Mountain Apparel Shenanigan Outdoor Pants .

Orvis O.O.O.O. 5-Pocket Pants

  • Fabric 51% cotton, 45% nylon, 4% Lycra
  • Fabric weight 213 gsm
  • Fit Casual boot cut, true to size

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Classically inspired 5-pocket design
  • Hidden 6th zippered pocket in right rear pocket
  • Reflective strips sewn inside both legs for visibility
  • Smallest size is 32”
  • No gusset for extra mobility. Not that they need it.
  • Slightly less fashionable option to Western Rise’s Evolution 2

You don’t have to pack a rod to appreciate Orvis’s O.O.O.O. 5-Pocket Pants ($129). These easy-wearing cotton-poly pants are a cross between your favorite denim and a lightweight khaki. The warp-knit twill has a touch of mechanical stretch and a DWR that is tough enough to negotiate riverside scrambles after work but with enough swagger to make it back to dinner in style.

Sewn together with an exposed overlock stitch, the seam is left exposed on the inside. It’s not tacked down. Though not as durable as a welted seam, the O.O.O.O. (that’s Out-Of-Office, Office) pants trend more durable than many of the pants we’ve seen. This seems entirely appropriate for the classic 5-pocket design pants.

The rear right pocket has an extra hidden zippered pocket to keep your wallet, passport, or fishing license securely stowed. In case you are riding home, both leg’s bottom hems have a six-inch strip of reflective tape sewn into the side seam. We didn’t expect that kind of attention to detail from a fishing brand, but it’s a nice touch that we appreciate.

We’ve been wearing the O.O.O.O. 5-Pocket Pants for years now and found that they are durable, lightweight, and breathable.

Eddie Bauer Guide Pro End-to-Ender Pants

  • Fabric 56% CORDURA® nylon, 37% nylon, 7% spandex
  • Fabric weight Unnkown

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Burly CORDURA fabric
  • Seven pocket design with three that close securely
  • Limited color ways
  • Backcountry styling doesn’t blend as well in the city

Eddie Bauer’s Guide Pro is a favorite with the GearJunkie staff. Classic fit, logical pocket layout, and top-shelf construction, these pants are frequently on sale and will last you for years. The Guide Pro End-to-Ender ($120) is Bauer’s beefed Guide Pro, and with a CORDURA nylon build, it’s more durable without sacrificing the weight, and it is 2 oz lighter. If you like to scramble around and get a little dirt under the nails while traveling, these pants are for you.

Constructed with a vertical weft knit and a generous portion of spandex, the pants have some lateral stretch but are vertically static. Articulated pleats help buy the pants mobility around the knees.

Seven generous and well-positioned pockets dot the pants. In addition to the pair of double-reinforced deep hand pockets, a pair of map pockets rest over the thighs. The left zips shut while the right thigh pocket has a flap that overlaps the lip of the pocket, keeping the contents from bouncing out. On the backside, two flap pockets snap shut and a third patch pocket hides under the right rear pocket.

The thigh pockets are sewn into the pants. This gives the pockets a clean and integrated look. Because Eddie Bauer stitches the entire pant together with overlocked seams, you can feel the extra bulk of the pocket seams against the leg.

These are the one of two pants on our list sewn entirely with overlock stitching, and it’s worth noting. This extra measure of stitching provides more durability, but you’ll feel the bulk. You get used to it over time. It’s really a testament to the overall bomber construction of the End-to-Enders.

The pants close with a beefy zipper and fat button which stay closed. Belt loops are tacked to the waistband for extra options. And two eyelets are punched through the bottom hem of each pant leg, allowing you to run a gaiter cord through the pants if you want.

Eddie Bauer is a stalwart when it comes to value. While the styling is more traditional, the Guide Pro End-to-Ender is one of the best-built pants we’ve seen on the market. And since Eddie Bauer seems to run a sale about every other month, you can eventually find them about 40% off, making the a fantastic deal.

Municipal Overland Cargo

  • Fabric 98% cotton ripstop, 2% spandex
  • Fabric weight 160 gsm
  • Fit Athletic

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Forward style
  • Six pockets, with three that zip shut, and one that snaps shut
  • Draw cord around the bottom hem
  • Elastic waist
  • Offered in one length
  • Treading into expensive territory for a simple pull-up cargo pant

Military meets gym day. From Mark Wahlberg’s warehouse of hustle and sporting style, Municipal’s Overland Cargo ($128) deconstructs the traditional cargo pant and injects modern flair. Which is a notable feat in itself.

Typically, function dictates form on cargo pants. Patched with oversized, baggy pockets can make them wear bulky and look unflattering. The Overland weaves a touch of spandex into the mostly cotton material, sews in a gusseted crotch, and pleated articulated knees to net functional mobility in a slim jogger style pant. These wear less Operation Desert Storm and slide right into urban core.

This doesn’t imply they lost their way. With six streamlined pockets, there is room for all your EDC essentials. In addition to the two deep hand pockets, two rear pockets zip shut. A vertical zipper pocket glides easily over the thigh, and the definitive cargo pocket snaps shut over the left leg with a single button. The entire pant is sewn together with overlocked and welted seams.

Available in size S-3X, the Overlands come in one length — the ideal length for anyone. True to jogger style, the bottom hem stops before the ankle.

An elastic cord is sewn into the bottom hem and can be cinched tight around the leg with a cord lock. Because of these design decisions, the length rides on its style credibility and has an acceptable universal size allowance.

Wahlberg’s style keeps you guessing whether he’s coming from or going to the gym. No button to pull out, no fly to blow, these pants pull up like sweatpants and stay around the waist with a simple drawstring. The Overland Cargo follows Wahlberg’s “I don’t care … but I look good doing it” aesthetic and is a great option for a casual lightweight pant with pockets aplenty.

For those that are cargo-curious — or simply want to throw on a pair of pants and look good without giving it much thought — the Overland Cargos have subtle posture without leaning heavily into athleisure.

How We Tested Men’s Travel Pants

There are few other products we test at GearJunkie that are considered non-negotiable in society. Outside the house, you gotta wear pants (or shorts). And if you’re choosing shorts, you’re probably not looking at the right pants. Travel pants are part of our everyday uniform allowing us to test them daily. We test pants for the office grind, after-school errands, dispatching weekend chores, and yes, of course, travel, constantly logging test hours to find the best travel pants on the market.

Cozy in coach, capable of tackling adventure, but formal enough to wear to dinner, travel pants span the use case spectrum. We’ve worn them on intercontinental flights to Germany, Italy, France, and Slovenia, as well as transcontinental flights from Jacksonville to Boise. In warmer climates, we’ve pulled them out of our bikepacking bags on cool nights in Nicaragua and high up on the Colombian Coffee Triangle. One tester even wore his pair to the top of the Grand Teton.

When we get our hands on a new pant, we first take a look at the materials. We gauge the fabric weight, breathability, and the material’s ability to resist wrinkling. Synthetics with a DWR will pack down smaller, bounce back from being jammed in luggage on an overnight flight, and resist stains (and spills) better than cotton.

A touch of spandex affords some stretch and nylon tends to be more durable. We then turn them inside out to look at the seams joining the pants together, looking at where costs were cut and potential quality issues might cause a blowout on the road.

To be considered for our list, pants need at least one pocket that can be zipped shut to safely secure a passport or wallet. The hand pockets should be deep enough to keep keys and change from accidentally spilling out, or have zippers that prevent mishaps. No joke, one pair of pants we tested (not on this list) spit a wallet out at work without us even knowing it.

We then evaluated each pant’s fit, durability, packability, ability to bounce back from repeated wash and wear, and unpacking. We want to find out if a pair of pants can be washed in the sink in the evening and be ready to wear the following morning.

We want to see if the material resists wrinkling. And we want to know if the pants are cut too large, too small, or hike up the legs. The best material and construction alone can’t fake a good fit. We test pants for mobility and proper length. Does the pant bind in the crotch? Are the gussets appropriate? Are the legs cut at a proper length or do they ride up when walking?

Our testing focuses primarily on comfort, versatility, and functionality when in transit, so if you’re looking for something more durable for active pursuits, check out our picks for the  best hiking pants . We also have a guide for the  best women’s travel pants  to get your travel companion ready for the long haul.

Testing History

Steve Graepel has been leading the men’s travel pant buyer guide since 2015. Over the span of 8 years, Graepel has seen over 225 pairs of travel pants, rigorously testing 150 pants. Graepel has worked at GearJunkie as a contributing editor since 2009, testing everything from packrafts, to bike bags, sleeping bags, winter boots, and trail runners. His latest beat is travel pants and flannels. Before his time as a fashion blogger, he wrote for Travel Idaho, National Geographic Adventure, Patagonia’s Tin Shed, Trail Runner, and Gear Patrol.

Graepel has researched and tested travel pants extensively — traveling, working, and camping in the high alpine desert of Idaho, Montana, and Utah, and traveling abroad in a variety of environments including Europe, Asia, Central, and South America. He continues to test travel pants year-round and searches for anyone who will listen to his yarns about the best travel trousers.

In 2020, we tried 27 pairs and listed 15 pants on our men’s buyers guide. In 2021, we tested an additional 35 pairs, highlighting nine new pants on our list. In 2022 we saw an additional 23 pairs, adding six new pants. In 2023 we looked at 38 pairs, adding seven new pants to the men’s travel pant buyer’s guide. Finally, in 2024, we’ve reviewed 27 pants, updating our Men’s Travel Pants buyer guide with nine new pants.

Each year introduces new styles and materials, and we try to reflect the best on the market of that year. Some trousers remain on the list, year after year. They are either so good, or so good of a deal, that they are tough to topple.

To keep a finger on the pulse of pants, we read reviews from top sites and contact manufacturers directly. Steve Graepel has regular conversations with pant brand owners and representatives in the travel pant space. These relationships allow us to stay up to date on what makes pants better every year, and keep an eye on sleeper pants that just don’t have the marketing budget to get mass attention.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose Travel Pants

Regardless of whether the pants are straight-leg or slim, a good pair is one that follows the human form and doesn’t bag out after repeated washings, or bloat when packed with your phone and keys. The length should fit your inseam or run longer so you can roll them up or get them tailored.

Almost every pant on our list has a great fit. If they didn’t, we’ve shared the cons. Both the Jetty’s and UNIONBAY’s pants ran a little long. On the other end, Municipal’s Overland Cargo is short by design and is only available in one length. Both Eddie Bauer and Orvis offer a variety of inseams for a dialed fit (from 30″ to 34″).

passport travel pants

We scored each pant for both its ability to adventure, wear in coach, and hit the streets. Some pants, like KETL Mountains Shenanigans, have a bias for stout use. The Shenanigans are coated with a solid DWR and are our choice for adventure trips where you can’t sacrifice durability.

If traveling by plane, we prefer comfortable pants with accessible pockets. While 5-pocket styled jeans or chinos wear well on the street, their pockets are harder to access when sitting on the plane. Instead, we prefer a jogger or cargo pant that has vertical zippered pockets and drop-in device pockets on the legs.

Both Municipal and KÜHL had easy-to-access pockets in the plane. Eddie Bauer’s Guide Pro End-to-Ender has two generous thigh pockets. But both are sewn into the pants and tighten up over the thigh when seated. This makes it harder to pull the contents out.

For comfort in coach, you don’t need to look past Bluffworks Envoy . They look great and have plenty of pockets to stay organized. KÜHL’s Suppressor Jogger dialed in the drop-in pockets and is lightweight and durable, but the material isn’t nearly as soft as Eddie Bauer’s pants. It’s always a trade-off.

Style Matters

While comfort is key, we also need to be able to show ourselves in public (no washed-out gray sweatpants on this list). The most versatile travel clothes should be able to tackle a hike without getting roughed up, or walk into town looking sharp enough to peruse a museum, and duck in for fine dining afterward.

Unfortunately, the cargo pockets take away some formality while out on the town. With its jogger styling, KÜHL didn’t design around Michelin stars. They prioritized function and durability, mapping to utility. KÜHL, Municipal, and Eddie Bauer each have unique cargo styling that brings a touch of modernity to the military-inspired side-pocket pants. In general, we love cargo-style pants and joggers while sitting on the plane. It keeps all your essentials within reach.

On the other hand, Western Rise’s Evolution 2 and Proof’s 72-Hour Merino are fantastically styled everyday pants, but both have a single security pocket to maintain that sleek look. They are our go-to choice for travels to big cities where we want to kick up the look and feel at home while traveling abroad.

Clean lines, darker colors, and traditional styling help you blend into crowds and stave off the would-be pickpocket’s radar. The best men’s travel pants should look as good as they feel without shouting “ tourist .”

The material should be lightweight and, in our preference, darker to minimize showing the dirt collected along the way. That said, we were astounded by how well a fresh DWR can resist stains on even the fairest beige pants.

Fabric Weight

Lightweight performance fabrics can withstand repeated washings in a sink, line dry overnight, and stay wrinkle-free after weeks on the go. Today’s fabrics offer advanced sun protection and moisture-wicking properties and are often water-resistant or water-repellent.

Fabric weight is measured in grams per square meter (GSM). A heavier GSM will take up more room in your bag and take longer to dry. We find a 200-ish GSM fabric weight, like on our top pick from Bluffworks, light and breezy, and dries out quickly.

A welterweight fabric will disappear in the bag and dry out insanely fast, but going too light sacrifices durability. All the pants we tested are durable enough to venture off the pavement.

If you want the lightest pant you can find, give KETL Mountain’s Shenanigan a look. The 156 GSM fabric rolls up tight and is exceptionally durable. Western Rise also uses a lighter GSM fabric, but the pants weigh more overall.

passport travel pants

Fabric Type

A cotton blend fabric adds breathability and a cooling effect, which is great for warmer climates, but can also sacrifice durability. And, unless treated with a DWR, cotton can wet out more easily and hold water longer.

The Orvis and Municipal’s Overland Cargo weave some cotton into their blend. To beef up the durability, the natural fiber is woven with a synthetic like polyester or nylon and an elastic component for stretch.

If you choose to go with denim or cotton, consider a stretchy fabric with a bit of spandex or elastane for comfort and flexibility while on the road. It will resist wear longer, dry faster, and feel much more comfortable. While not on this year’s list, Aviator’s The Best Travel Jeans in the World are very comfortable and weave in some stretch, but they weigh nearly twice as much as every other pant on the list. Our cotton choices keep the weight down.

Most of the pants on this list are woven from synthetic fibers. Synthetics tend to stand up to more abuse than their natural counterparts. For example, Ornot’s Mission Pant is incredibly durable and is built for men who abuse pants while in the saddle.

Unique this year, we saw a merino wool synthetic blend with Proof’s 72-Hour Merino Travel Pant. Wool is known for its odor-resistant and insulative qualities. Contrary to what you might think, they stay surprisingly cool and breathe well in hot climates. For durability and stretch, Proof weaves nylon, polyester, and a touch of elastane.

Weaving in spandex or elastic adds mobility, but can also give the pants a polished, slick finish. KÜHL weaves in a whopping 15% spandex into the material, but most pants will have between 2-6% for a combination of durability and mobility. Bluffworks , Unionbay , and Jetty feel more formal with their smooth-faced fabric finishes. Material finishes are more of a personal preference and don’t affect their water resistance, which is added with a DWR wash.

Our favorite pants come from Bluffworks. While the fit is fantastic, they don’t have a DWR. This makes them less desirable if you are traveling to places that rain a lot. However, they excel in so many other ways that they still stand out as our top choice. On the flip side, Western Rise’s DWR not only deflects dirt and grime on the road, but liters of beer simply rolled off them at Oktoberfest. We really took one for the team while testing.

Performance fabrics are standing up to heavy use like never before. Shelling out a few more bucks for quality generally gets you into a more durable pant that should hold up to more extensive use. We’ve put in countless hours testing the pants on this list, so you’re starting in the right place.

Seam Construction

Seams are often overlooked. Out of sight, out of mind, seams bring two patches of fabric together and are crucial for durability and comfort. But this is where we can differentiate the good from the great, and this is where we get passionately nerdy.

Flat-felled seams are best for joining heavy fabrics together. Think denim. The material doesn’t stretch and the fabric is woven from heavy cotton yarn. You want a solid seam to join the pants together. The fabric is joined, then rolled over itself and double stitched for a clean, bomber fasten.

None of the pants on our list are joined entirely from flat-felled seams, though LIVSN and Proof incorporate a flat-fell seam on at least one leg seam. In general, we find it more important to flat-fell the inseam of the pants (which is what Proof does).

Too much material tacked together with a flat-fell seam can cause rubbing against the legs. And most travel pants are constructed from lighter-weight fabrics, so pants don’t always need this extra durable seam construction.

They can get away with a less expensive, and more comfortable overlocked seam. An overlocking stitch, or welt-seam, has a lower profile, leaving the raw edge exposed but sewn down to the pant. Plus they are nearly as durable as the venerable flat-felled stitch, but can feel more comfortable.

Some overlocked stitches aren’t tacked down. That is, the seam isn’t locked down flat with a second row of stitching, leaving the surged seam exposed on the inside. This usually isn’t a big deal. Our main concern would be that the stitching could get caught on something and start to unravel. But we haven’t ever had this experience and it’s a fine option to use when binding two lightweight materials together. Orvis, Ornot, and even Bluffworks uses a combination of overlocked and welted overlocked seams.

The simplest seam, or plain seam, joins the two sides together with a simple, single stitch. Often the cut material is finished with a surger to prevent the material from fraying, but the joining seam itself is sewn together with a single stitch, and the exposed edges butterfly on the inside of the pant.

This is often used for lightweight material where want to reduce the bulk as much as possible. We see this used on Western Rise’s Evolution 2. In theory, this is not a highly durable seam construction. And we’ve seen this kind of seam unravel on a few pants we’ve tested. We’ve also been beating our Western Rise’s for years now and have yet to see their plain seam blow.

passport travel pants

We like a pant that doesn’t ride up or bind when seated, and moves with you when active. DUER and KÜHL are very close at the top, for pure comfort, you can’t beat  Bluffworks Envoy . Beyond the fantastic material, the pant is is available in slim and regular fit, so there’s truly a comfortable pant for everyone’s preference.

passport travel pants

We’ve tested  Western Rise’s Evolution lineup   standing outside in Bogota monsoon season, climbing snow and ice on the Grand, and prosting over beers at Oktoberfest. The DWR not only sheds spills, but it deflects dirt and grime too.

After a week of wearing them across the Alps, including a day sitting in the stairwell of an overbooked train to Munich, we were shocked at how clean our light khaki Evolution 2.0s walked off the return flight. We were also impressed with KETL Mountain’s Shenanigan’s. Water immediately beads off the surface.

If you’re bringing one pair of pants, you’ll eventually have to wash them while on the road. A lightweight synthetic pant is your best bet for a comfortable morning. Here again, Western Rise’s Evolutions  rose to the top. They are lightweight, durable, and dry out quicker than most. They also remain cool and breezy in hot climates and wear supremely well.

The pair of large cargo pockets on Muncipal’s Overland Cargo are easy to access and have plenty of space to hold your kit and do it without looking like Urkel. For an equally impressive pocket game, but a more polished look, we recommend looking at Bluffworks Envoy, which stealthily hides nine pockets in the otherwise casual-looking chino. Eddie Bauer’s Guide Pro End-to-Ender is close, with seven practical and accessible pockets.

passport travel pants

With their high CORDURA count, the Eddie Bauers are tough to beat. Ornot’s Mission pants weaves a high nylon count, and come in a very close second for durability.

For long flights on the plane, we like comfortable, casual look with easy pocket access. We give the nod to Municipal’s Overland Cargo. The deep horizontal pockets are easy to access while seated and the high cotton count breathes well.

KÜHL’s Suppressor Joggers have the highest spandex count on the list at 15%. They are super flexible, light, durable, and have a good DWR. For a more formal look, Bluffworks has an equally impressive spandex weave (10%) and is by far the most comfortable pant on our list.

For a good combination of flexibility, durability, and all-around wearability, we recommend Western Rise’s Evolution 2. If you want to splurge, we also liked Proof’s 72-Hour Merino Travel Pant, which blends 6% elastane into the wool-synthetic base. Proof’s pants are nearly a one-and-done purchase. They are durable and stay stench-free on the road, making them the only pants you may need to bring.

When you travel, a lot of thought goes into the types of items that you bring with you. If you’re like me, everything that you have serves multiple purposes. I like to pack light, and too many single-use items quickly start to add up and fill your bag.

I usually travel with a single pair of pants. I want to make sure those pants will last a long time! Picking a good pair of pants is based on a few qualifying factors. A pair of pants should be durable, flexible, good quality, not doofy and should serve a secondary purpose like being suitable for a second occasion.

What I like about the company is that they are product-focused, and their garments perform great in all different types of temperatures, occasions, altitudes and activities. What’s more is they don’t chase fast trends; instead, their men’s line is timeless and functional. If you were wondering, the name of the brand reflects the feeling of the Rocky Mountains (which are in the American West).

I recommend two of their styles:

  • Evolution Pant 2.0

Are Western Rise travel pants worth it?

Here’s what I want to discuss about both the Evolution Pant and the AT Pant : both focus on durability, and comfort, with looks that are great for the workday or the weekend.

In general Western Rise makes quality clothing. After putting together a Western Rise brand review , I’m sold on their items fitting all of my criteria.

The Evolution Pant

The Evolution Pant happens to be ultra-lightweight and moisture-wicking, and it is also stretchy. I like wearing these on the weekend or if I’m taking a short train or bus ride these days.

Western Rise Evolution Pant

These pants are perfect for the summer (or hot weather) if you’re looking for something light weight and versatile. When I took them out of the packaging, I was surprised how thin they actually were.

The AT Pant

For the AT Pant , they’re meant to replace jeans and work pants, so to speak. They have a two-way stretch, and elevate qualities of being breathable, water-resistant and no joke, Western Rise wants you to work from home in these.

I actually got caught in the rain while I was wearing these. I was able to brush the rain drops right off, and I stayed fairly dry. Pretty cool!

Western Rise AT Pant

The lightweight proprietary fabric that's unique and stretchy. It doesn't feel stiff after hours of wear, so the pants feel like weightless chinos.

Aviator Travel Jeans

My pair of Aviator Jeans are one of my favorite pairs of pants. I have owned these for a while, and they have been an amazing asset for me. They were the first pair of pants with zipper pockets that I ever owned. They’re also stretchy and very comfortable.

Aviator Travel Pants

Interested in hoodies? We wrote a review of the First Class Merino Hoodie , by Aviator.

What are the best features of Aviator Jeans?

I like that Aviators have pockets specifically for a phone, a wallet or a passport. You can zip things in place, and you don’t have to worry about your things falling out or being stolen.

I was once on a train, and I was wearing sweatpants. Would you believe that my wallet fell out?

Luckily, I noticed this before the train left the station, and I was able to recover my wallet. Since this experience, I’ve really come to appreciate zipper pockets.

Wearing Aviator Jeans is a nice experience because they’re comfortable and stretchy. The blend of fabric is soft and durable. I’m confident that they’ll last if I wear them every day, and they’re durable enough to withstand some wear and tear.

Which features of Aviator Jeans can be improved?

I think there’s too much fabric in and around the pockets. They sometimes feel a little bulky around the sides. Their bulkiness makes sense because some of the pockets are double pockets, and you need the extra fabric for the zippers.

I also had to get these jeans tailored considerably (again, by Becca’s mom — thanks!). With that said, they legs fit a little on the wide side.

Update, Aviator now offers free hemming when you order! They’ll also reimburse hemming up to $10 if you show a receipt. Keep in mind that sales are final once you make any alterations.

The hemming has been one of my (and Becca’s) favorite features about Aviator. In fact, Becca’s Aviator travel dress was hemmed and now fits perfectly!

All of the Bluffworks travel pants are wrinkle-resistant, breathable and moisture-wicking. They all do an excellent job of being durable while you wash them, holding your phone (or other items) and secretly having pockets (in other words, they have hidden pockets).

Bluffworks Pants

Why is Bluffworks the original travel pants?

Their original travel pants are made from super lightweight material. I tried these on during a hot day, and I could have sworn that they had an air conditioner inside of them. These will be great pants if you’re wearing pants in really hot climates. They’re very wrinkle-resistant, so if they’re rolled up in a ball for a few days, you can shake them out, and they look presentable.

Bluffworks pants have been around for a long time. In fact, they were created in 2012. They have an interesting history that is worth checking out.

Bluffworks also makes a travel suit and nice travel clothes

The same technology that goes into the pants is also in their suits. If you need to travel with a suit, the suits from Bluffworks are sure bets for having a suit that doesn’t wrinkle or smell during a trip.

I recommend the Bluffworks Gramercy suit , which has wrinkle-free suit pants. Check out our tips on how to pack a suit to avoid wrinkles , as well as my Gramercy Travel Suit review .

They also have the Ascender Chino pants, which are your best option for times when you want something nicer or more professional. They pair nicely with their wrinkle-free travel dress shirts . I’ve been traveling with this combo to weddings and other events, and it’s been a great experience.

DUER (Performance Denim Slim Fit)

Before I was wearing my DUER pants , I was wearing custom pants that I got in Argentina.

The pants from Argentina are some of my favorite pants, ever, but weren’t practical for traveling. They had shallow pockets, and the seams were not reinforced. The insides of the pockets started breaking because they weren’t sewn well, and overall, it was time for a trusty pair of pants for me.

Get free shipping when you spend $99+; no code needed.

When I walked around South America during my year of working remotely and traveling , I was nervous that my pockets would get pick-pocketed.

I also blew out the seams a few times, and they currently have a patch on them. I can’t say that the material is the most durable, but they are very comfortable!

I still wear these around New York City. My phone often slides around and is exposed in the corners of the pockets. I always have to make sure nothing falls out of the pockets.

My DUER jeans are the answer to the problems that my Argentina pants had. DUER pants are incredibly durable and have nice deep pockets. They have a lot of different styles to choose from, and all styles offer features that are unique.

The pair that I have lasted about three years of daily use. That’s something like 1000 wears! They have since worn out a bit, but that’s to be expected because I don’t think any material really lasts forever.

I talk about them as pants made for travelers in my DUER Performance Slim denim jeans review .

For a trip when you’ll be in cold places, I tried DUER’s fleece-lined jeans and discuss them in my DUER Fireside Winter Jeans review ! They’re perfect for frigid climates or a ski trip. They have a thin layer of insulation, which don’t get in the way where other fleece-lined paints might.

DUER Travel Pants

What types of DUER Pants do I have?

I settled on the “No Sweat Slim” pair. They didn’t need any alterations or modifications. With that said, they are a slim fit, so they might not work for everyone. In any case, these are my go-to jeans that I could wear essentially any day of the week, and I always feel great in them.

Man walking in ireland with DUER performance denim

I’ve worn these pants on hikes, with a nice shirt at a fancy event and almost every day during casual days. I only have nice things about DUER pants and actually, I bought them with a friend who also raves about them equally. The DUER pants don’t have zipper pockets, but that isn’t a big deal unless you’re looking for them.

What makes DUER Pants unique?

I wanted to call out that DUER pants have a lot of reinforcement in certain places that usually fall apart on other pants that you wear often. Their pockets are also some of the deepest that I’ve seen in any other type of pants. This means feeling good that things won’t fall out of your pants even if you are doing a cartwheel.

Man walking in ireland with DUER performance denim.

Men's Performance Denim Jeans

The DUER signature gusset and the overall fit make these my favorite. They're built to last, even if you wear them during long-term travel or every single day of the week.

DUER (No Sweat Joggers)

Because I like my other pair of DUER jeans, I’ll mention that DUER also has a pair of joggers . I like joggers for travel because they are comfortable and versatile. You can wear them on travel days and for walking around cities and exploring various destinations.

Joggers aren’t the best for hiking, but they do hold up very well for more active activities like working out and riding a bike.

passport travel pants

They look great and would totally work for the traveler looking to find a great looking pair of pants that can be worn on multiple occasions. I really like joggers, and to this end, I’ve rounded up the best joggers for men , which is worth checking out.

DUER Travel Pants

No Sweat Jogger

What's special and new about DUER's jogger is that the style mimics jeans, down to the pockets and the fly, which I haven't seen in other joggers from competing brands.

Mott & Bow Staple Jeans

Mott & Bow is a men’s and women’s apparel company that makes flattering jeans in timeless styles. I’ve enjoyed learning about the brand and all its products, and taking the jeans on my recent travels. The jeans are well-made and look effortless, with simple tailored fits from skinny to slim and with a fit for everyone.

See my review on what to know before you buy Mott & Bow to learn a lot more about this company and their other men’s products, from my favorite everyday tee, to cashmere sweaters.

The Staple jeans fit me nicely, to the point where I feel good in them, and they’re durable and versatile. They’re effortlessly comfortable, more than most pairs of jeans I own.

One thing to note is that they only come in one length, 32. I roll them up because I’m typically a 30, but you can also get them tailored.

For the “Skinny” variety, I went 1 size up. It’s rare that I do this, but skinny jeans seem to fit a little on the smaller side from Mott & Bow. Their jeans (based on the “styles,” which all have names like Staple, Broome, etc.) can mostly be found in Skinny, Slim and Straight.

Let’s start with the stretch. These particular jeans are stretchy, so this makes them practical for long flights or travel days. The specific material is Dynamic Stretch, which has a 32% elasticity factor from the cotton, polyester and elastane.

The fabric is soft, which is why I enjoy it. It’s not scratchy or stiff, and it feels like good substantial denim that I’d wear in fall, winter or early spring.

Everything else you need to know

These jeans are part of the Dynamic Stretch category offered by Mott & Bow. There are a few other varieties in that category that might be worth checking out if you’re into these styles.

Mott & Bow also offers pants called the 4-Way Stretch . You’ll see these listed as Broome Jeans . These are unique because they offer stretching in all directions, and they’re good for different types of mobility.

One more thing I’ll comment on about Mott & Bow is that their product pages for jeans specifically state that you don’t necessarily have to wash these jeans often. This is my kind of brand! I rarely wash my jeans (and found that that this is actually recommended by denim experts!).

prAna Brion

prAna is a socially-responsible company. You can learn more about their sustainability mission on their website .

Their sustainability line offers recycled wool and organic cotton. Their clothes are also fair trade certified! Quality and durability are important to the brand. They mention those two pillars in their mission statement.

prAna Brion Travel Pants

Are prAna Brion pants worth it?

Their pants are crowd-pleasers! The Brion line is the most popular pair of pants that prAna makes. The material is cut from their original stretch Zion fabric. They have a lot of useful features that are specific to travel needs, like reinforced rivets, water-repellent materials and sun protection. Somehow, they’ve kept the price competitive and affordable through the years.

prAna Brion: deep dive

A personal consideration about these pants is that the pants are not tapered. If you have the pants tailored, you can get them to fit you exactly how you want. If you don’t typically wear slim fit pants, this shouldn’t be an issue for you.

The pants contain 97% nylon and 3% spandex. If you weren’t sure what their original stretch fabric is, this is it!

You can use these pants for almost every occasion. They’d be good for hikes, climbs, casual Saturdays, office attire and for riding a bike.

These travel pants are more traditional, so they're good for someone who likes a slim fit that's not a skinny jean. prAna's commitment to sustainability is awesome, so sustainable shoppers will like the Brion.

prAna Stretch Zion

The Stretch Zion pants are a great option for hiking and a more comfortable travel experience. They are classified as technical pants, which I believe speaks to their ability to offer features such as an adjustable waist, stretchy material, an inseam gusset and roll-up snaps.

If you’re more adventurous, the Zion pants will help you perform better in your activity of choice. If you like to travel with a pair of pants and feel like you can do anything in them, then the prAna Stretch Zion would be a great option for you.

A stretchier Brion travel pant, these performance pants are made of recycled nylon and have a ventilated gusset, which is great for active days or a workday that turns into a hike day.

Icebreaker Merino Shifter

Icebreaker is known among the serious traveler crowd because of their quality and their use of merino wool.

Merino wool is one of the best materials to use for clothes. You can wear merino wool several times and the smell never really knocks your socks off. Well, unless they are socks, and you take them off.

Sustainability is a big part of their philosophy and core values as a company. They also make other great items for travelers, like their well-known socks, shirts and hats.

Icebreaker Merino Shifter

How are Icebreaker Merino Shifter pants?

Their pants are solid. Icebreaker has a few options for pants, and I’ll focus on their Merino Shifter Pants .

I think they’re interesting to highlight because this is a case in which this might be your secondary pair of pants. Although I typically like to travel with a single pair of paints, I can see having a second pair.

Traveling with two pairs of pants is good if one is in the wash or is wet from the rain. It would also be good in case you lose a pair of pants (is that possible?).

When would you use Icebreaker Merino Shifter Pants?

If you have the capacity for multiple pairs of pants or if you aren’t traveling full-time , these are still great pants to have.

They’re super cozy and have numerous uses. You can take them on a run during a cold day, be warm while relaxing around your house, pretend these are “adult pants” and wear them to work and more!

You might have a harder time in tailoring these; however, you might not need to because the pants are already tapered. They also have an excellent stretchy material called LYCRA® that helps a lot with the mobility and “stretchability.”

These merino fitted jogger-style pants are more like a tailored comfy pair of sweatpants that'll get you through travel days with the soft merino wool jersey knit. Also great for lounging around.

Rhone Commuter

The Rhone Commuter are not your generic “travel pants.” They appear to be from the outside, but when you dig a little deeper, they have some nice features.

Rhone Commuter pants

How can travel pants have features?

The Rhone Commuters come with a few things that can be useful for someone who travels a lot. They have a snap button, back pocket zipper, phone pocket, articulated knee and a gusset. Why are these useful features?

A snap button is useful for times when you only have one hand available. It’s also more comfortable, in my opinion. Back zipper pockets are helpful to keep things from falling out. I explained more details about this below! I like the phone (or media) pockets for phones and phone-sized-things, like passports. Having an articulated knee in a pair of pants is only useful if you’re doing a lot of movement.

One of the best features about buying Rhone pants is their ability to hem your pants. Not needing to hem these pants yourself saves a trip to a tailor and makes them a bit more custom when they get to you.

Wait, what’s a gusset?

A gusset is a piece of fabric in the undercarriage of the pants that reinforces the area and helps prevent the ripping of your pants.

These commuter pants make a great travel option because they include a few important features, namely a zipper pocket and mobility gusset, that make them all-star travel chinos.

Mountain Hardwear Men’s AP Pant

Mountain Hardware is a well-known outdoor brand. I first heard about them because of their jackets. Their Hardwear AP™ pants are their flagship hiking and climbing pants. Can pants have a flagship model? I guess so!

They’re mostly cotton and nylon. Most people don’t like cotton for travel clothes, but I don’t mind it. I think that cotton gets better with age and is more comfortable. It doesn’t usually do well in wet weather, though.

Mountain Hardwear Men's AP Pant

What to expect wearing Mountain Hardwear AP™ Pants

You can expect normal pants-wearing-things with these. Aside from covering your legs, you’ll find zip pockets, articulated knees, reflective strips and a cell phone pocket. The reflective strips are useful when you roll up the bottoms of the pants. When you’re on a bike, it’s an extra protective measure for being seen in darker conditions.

passport travel pants

Standout features for the Men's AP pant are that they look more like hiking pants that have a decent side, so that you can walk into a brewery after the hike during your trip, and avoid looking messy.

Public Rec Every Day Jogger

Public Rec is a ‘leisure for everywhere’ brand specializing in soft and breathable products for men. I tried out their “All Day Every Day” (ADED for short) jogger, which is a style tailored for travel and comfort.

passport travel pants

What can you expect from the Public Rec jogger?

At first glance, the jogger looks like a tailored type of sweatpants, but it’s more than that. From far away, these pants look great. I almost wanted to wear these to work! Now that I work from home , I can wear them to work. There’s an elastic waistband with internal drawstring, along with front and back zipper pockets that you can keep some crucial items in during travel.

In order to not be confused with sweatpants, the joggers have a faux front fly for a more formal look. While you probably wouldn’t wear these right from the plane to a business meeting, you could for sure wear them for a day of sightseeing and feel pretty put-together.

What do the Public Rec Every Day Joggers feel like?

The joggers are a spandex-nylon blend, which makes them breathable and not a bad choice if you’ll potentially be perspiring.

Public Rec Every Day Jogger

Do you need the Public Rec Every Day Joggers?

Probably. If you like to wear pants that are not jeans when you’re in transit, and if you still want to look decent, then yes: you need the Public Rec joggers for men.

The Public Rec jogger will be the closest thing you can find to a stretchy pair of pants that will be comfortable, won’t wrinkle and will look pretty okay after 24 hours in transit (like on a flight).

Another question is: do you need the Public Rec joggers for a woman in your life? Maybe you do! This is a pair of travel pants in this list that also has a women’s version: the women’s All Day Joggers from Public Rec , and my wife Becca approves of them.

Can you run in the Public Rec Every Day Joggers?

Yes! In colder weather (below freezing) I like to run in pants. For me, shorts are ok as long as the temperatures are above freezing. On some of the coldest days of the year, I decided to research what types of pants to buy for cold weather running. I enjoyed all of the suggestions, but I like to utilize items that I already own.

I took the Public Rec Every Day Joggers out for a run and it was great! I stayed really warm, in fact, I was actually too warm at the end of my run.

There is a security pocket on the left side, which was perfect for holding my phone during my run. I typically have a lightweight running belt but it wasn’t needed when I was wearing these pants — all thanks to that pocket!

Public Rec all day every day joggers product photo.

All Day Every Day Jogger

One of my favorite aspects of these joggers is that it's possible to work out in them, and also wear them on a plane and around a city. For joggers, they have a tapered and decent look to them, and come in nice colors.

Foehn Men’s Brise Schoeller Pant

These Brise Schoeller Pants are going to be your pick for anything active. The pants are designed for everything. Because they are so adaptable, these may one of the only pair of pants you need to bring on a trip. As an update, Foehn reported that they have “updated the fit” on the current version of the Brise, so please re-check your sizing on the product page !

Brise schoeller pant product photo.

Do you need the Brise Schoeller Pant?

Maybe. You can find mechanically wicking material, which is great hot weather. The stretch fabric it perfect for times when you need to be a little more active than sitting on a couch or an airplane. The material is truly quality and all of the zippers found on the pants are YKK zippers. Knowing what I know about the Foehn brand, they don’t make too many products, because they take pride in and want to excel in each one.

What features should you look out for when choosing your next pair of travel pants?

Zipper pockets can help keep your valuables safe.

No matter how careful you are, it’s always a possibility that you can get pick-pocketed. Zipper pockets are an easy way to protect yourself from someone reaching into your pockets and snatching your phone or wallet.

With everyday use, zipper pockets are also great for making sure you don’t lose valuable items that you keep in your pockets!

Depending on what you’re doing, you need to put a lot of trust into regular pockets for making sure you don’t lose anything. It’s really easy for a phone or wallet to slide out if you’re traveling all day and get up from a chair or bench. Having a little extra security can really go a long way.

What pants with zipper pockets do I recommend?

Check out a quick list of pants with zipper pockets. Even if you are not traveling, pants with zipper pockets truly help in all occasions. They are great for hiking, biking, commuting or walking around.

Hidden pockets are an extra layer of protection

You might want hidden pockets (or inside) pockets if you really want to feel secure about keeping your valuables close to you. Alternatively, you could also look for a money belt.

Secret pockets are a great place to stash things like your travel documents, your keys or phone. Hidden pockets may also have a zipper that can help when you take off your pants and forget something is inside of the pockets.

Articulated knees make pants more comfortable

Having articulated knees built into pants is an interesting feature. They help to avoid having your pants bunched up or cutting off circulation. It makes it easier to go into a full squat as well. Having this feature in pants is a useful for hiking and going to the gym. The stitching pattern gives off a “travel pants” vibe.

I suspect that custom-fitting pants with articulated knees might introduce some challenges for the tailor (or Becca’s mom). For these types of pants, I take the stance that they’re specifically for hiking and that they don’t require any custom fitting.

Cell phone pockets protect your phone

I generally like cell phone pockets because it means more pockets for other things. When you travel, sometimes you have odd items. It’s not uncommon to have a passport with you while you’re out, or to have an oddly-shaped piece of paper. Using such a pocket for those items is often a better idea than using it for your cell phone.

Stretchy material

Any pants that have some type of spandex built into the fabric is a nice touch in making your pants more comfortable. You’ll see a benefit of extra mobility and the pants will be more forgiving for different situations.

Why should you trust me?

Pants are a staple item in my travel gear. I often travel with one pair of pants to help save space in my luggage. When I find a pair of pants that I like, I make that decision based on quality and functionality.

Additionally, I look for pants that provide utility, like to help prevent pickpockets !

I traveled long-term for a year in each of 2016-2017 and 2018-2019. I’ve traveled to 30+ countries and have lived out of only a backpack while working remotely for many months! I take travel pants seriously and I have used that knowledge to make this list.

TripSavvy / Marcus Millan

A great pair of travel pants is a lot like a great friend: supportive without being restrictive and ready for any occasion. Look for breathable, moisture-wicking materials that won’t wrinkle in your suitcase or after hours on the airplane. A relaxed fit (or plenty of stretch if you opt for form-fitting leggings) is essential for freedom of movement on your adventures, while the ability to transition from day to evening wear with the right accessories is a major plus that cuts down on packing requirements.

Finding pants that meet all these criteria can seem difficult, which is why our team of travel experts took on the task of testing 40 of the most popular options currently on the market. We wore each pair in multiple scenarios from air travel to gym workouts for two weeks, then scored them for fit, comfort, quality, durability, design, and value to choose our favorites. Our overall winner was the Stretch High-Rise Jogger from Lululemon, with its super soft material; loose, breathable fit; and useful pockets. Here are all the travel pants we loved.

Final Verdict

How we tested.

  • What to Look for in Travel Pants

Why Trust TripSavvy

Best overall, lululemon high-rise jogger.

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5

Incredibly soft

Breathable and moisture-wicking

Versatile drawstring waistband

Some may prefer a slimmer cut

The Lululemon Stretch High-Rise Jogger may well be the perfect travel pant, with a classic, loose-fitting silhouette that we found supremely comfortable. Although they’re meant to be full-length, the tapered ankle means they look good even if they come up a little shorter on tall women, while the Luxtreme fabric’s combination of softness and stretchiness offers a slightly more elevated aesthetic than one might expect from a pair of joggers. Designed for breathability, the moisture-wicking fabric also handles temperature changes well (as proved when we tested them on a journey from chilly San Francisco to balmy Hawaii).

We loved the butter-soft waistband and the fact that while stretchy, these joggers also have a drawstring that you can cinch for a more tailored fit. The drawstring can be worn visibly or hidden inside for a more streamlined look. We also appreciated the extra-deep pockets, which held our phone securely even when sitting down. The pants also boast a hidden zipper pocket and card sleeve. Best of all, after multiple plane and car journeys (and three washes) the pants looked and felt brand new. Color choices are mostly muted and include kelly green, utility blue, and black.

Sizes: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 | Materials: Nylon, Lycra, elastane, polyester

Best Lightweight

Outdoor voices relay wide leg pant.

Public Lands

Easy-on elasticated waistband

Great freedom of movement

Generous pockets

Sizing is not particularly accurate

The mid-rise Relay Wide Leg Pants from Outdoor Voices score sustainability points with their recycled polyester and spandex construction. We also found the combination to be incredibly comfortable, even on a journey from New York City to Florida that involved several different modes of transport and a significant temperature change. The pants are breathable and lightweight without feeling cheap, with a decent amount of stretch. We loved the branded, elasticated waistband—no more struggling with zippers, buttons, or drawstrings while rushing for a flight.

The elasticity also gave us full freedom of movement while performing squats as part of our testing process. As a result, we feel the pants would be ideal for everything from all-day walking tours to hiking, biking, and working out on vacation. Spacious pockets are another highlight, although we noticed that anything weighty did tend to pull the pants down a bit. They come in black, oceanic (blue), and gravel (beige). We recommend sizing down for the best fit.

Best for Work

Quince 100 percent european linen pants.

  • Design 5 /5

Flattering, supportive shape

Wrinkle-resistant material

Elasticated for pull-on convenience

Multiple inseam lengths available in select colors only

Pockets are purely decorative

If you’re looking for pants that you can wear straight to a meeting after arriving at the airport, look no further than the Quince Ultra-Stretch Ponte Straight Leg Pants. They offer all the convenience of traditional travel pants, with an elasticated waistband for easy on and off and four-way-stretch fabric for complete freedom of movement. But, with their straight cut and thoughtful detailing (think belt loops and faux pockets on the front and back), they are also elegant enough for the boardroom.

We love that these pants are wrinkle-resistant, so you don’t need to waste time looking for an iron in your hotel room. And finding the right size is easy with three inseam lengths to choose from. Our tester wears an XL and has a pear-shaped body type. She loved the pants’ fit, finding them comfortable yet supportive with good tummy control (without feeling like shapewear). The only downside? We wish there were even more sizes to choose from and that all inseam lengths were available in every colorway.

Sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL; 28-inch, 30-inch, 32-inch inseam | Materials: Rayon, nylon, spandex

Liverpool The Gia Glider Ankle Skinny Jean

Available in regular and tall lengths

Can be dressed up or down

Functioning pockets

Fit loosens slightly in between washes

Sometimes you have to pack light and one way to do that is to opt for pants that you can dress up or down for any occasion—like the Liverpool Los Angeles The Gia Gliders. Thicker and more supportive than leggings yet stretchier, softer, and more comfortable than regular jeans, these mid-rise jeggings come in two lengths and can be pulled on in seconds. We found them amazingly comfortable, even after full days in the office, running errands, or traveling across the city.

A faux zipper, a working button, and belt loops add style points. And, although the front pockets are too small to be very useful, we really appreciated the functionality of the full-size back pockets. We found that the pants offered a great range of movement (although we wouldn’t necessarily recommend them for your next yoga session!), and loved that they were thick enough never to have to worry about see-through areas. We did find that they bagged slightly after a few days’ wear, but also that they returned to their original shape after washing.

Sizes: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16; regular, tall | Materials: Cotton, rayon, modal

Best With Pockets

Wayre jetsetter trouser.

Inclusive sizing

Incredibly versatile

Sustainable and ethically made

Not ideal for colder weather

If you prioritize pockets when looking for the perfect pair of pants, you’ll love the Wayre Jetsetter Trousers. They offer six functional pockets: four on the sides and back, each large enough for a phone or wallet; a card pocket; and a pickpocket-proof zippered pocket capable of accommodating a passport, cash, or keys. We also love the broad range of sizes offered, including standard and tall lengths. We loved the fit, finding them true to size with a waistband that wasn’t too tight or loose, but just right.

The style is wide-legged, with a cropped length and high-rise waist. They’re flexible enough to be comfy on the plane or when exploring your destination, but also smart enough to dress up come evening. We feel this versatility helps to justify the pants’ admittedly high price tag. They are made of durable Aire-Flex fabric, which is breathable, spill- and odor-proof, wrinkle-proof, and rated for UPF 30+ sun protection. It’s also bluesign-certified for sustainability points, and available in six gorgeous colors from bronze to rose water.

Sizes: 00, 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 | Materials: Aire-Flex (rPET)

Most Comfortable

Vuori performance jogger.

  • Design 4 /5

Unbelievably soft fabric

Completely unrestricted movement

Can be tumble dried

Pockets aren’t particularly functional

Cropped style may not suit all tastes

Vuori Performance Joggers are made from DreamKnit fabric: a recycled polyester and elastane blend that’s impossibly soft and comfortable on long travel days. The pants are also breathable and moisture-wicking, with four-way stretch for full freedom of movement. The fit is slim yet relaxed, with a mid-rise waist and a tapered, cropped leg. We liked the adjustability of the drawstring waist and the fact that the fit remained consistent on every wear. Some of us that are tall weren't a big fan of the cropped style, though.

The joggers have two side pockets, which are deep enough to hold your phone or wallet. However, we found that anything bulky looked a little odd due to the pants’ slightly clingy style. Nevertheless, we believe the durable, quality fabric makes them well worth their high-end price tag and appreciated that unlike many of the pants on this list, ythese ones can be tumble dried without shrinking, stretching, or pilling. Colors range from black camo and navy to a dusky pink marsala heather.

Abercrombie & Fitch

  • Quality 4.5 /5

Flattering, sculpting design

No movement, even during high-impact activities

Relatively affordable

Lighter colors may show sweat when working out

The Abercrombie YPB StudioSoft 7/8 Length Leggings are made from a super soft, stretchy, and supportive nylon and elastane blend. We loved that they were like a second skin without making us feel like a stuffed sausage. The double-layer waistband compresses without being uncomfortable for a smoothing effect, while an ultra high-rise cut and sculpting, V-shaped back seaming help flatter your figure, whatever your body type. We felt that the leggings were pretty breathable, although some sweat did show through on the light color we tested.

One highlight for us was that the leggings stayed firmly in place with no sagging, looseness, or riding up no matter what we wore them for—including a high-impact gym workout. With completely unimpeded movement, we could see them performing well in any travel scenario, from sightseeing to adventure tours. There’s even a hidden interior waistband pocket for cards or keys. The leggings are the most affordable on this list and come in three inseam lengths (short, regular, and long) and four colors (lilac, oat, onyx, and mineral blue).

Quince Ponte Straight Leg Pant

  • Durability 4.5 /5

Naturally heat regulating

Retain quality after multiple washes

Ethically sourced and produced

Unstructured fit loosens throughout the day

These beautiful linen pants from Quince are ethically woven from 100 percent European flax, making them naturally hypoallergenic, breathable, and heat regulating. We found them so light and comfortable, it was easy to forget we were wearing pants at all. After trying them on, we would describe them as “just easy,” from putting them on to accessorizing them for different occasions. The linen is also very high quality, with no changes to its look or feel after several washes and enough thickness not to have to worry about visible underwear.

The fit is true to size, with a streamlined, straight-leg aesthetic that we feel is very versatile. The cropped legs hit just above the ankle, making them practical for navigating less-than-pristine airport bathrooms and cute when paired with sneakers, sandals, and flip-flops. If we could make one change? We’d add a drawstring to the elasticated waist to counteract the fact that it does stretch a little with extended wear. Finally, the pants have three functioning pockets and come in nine attractive colors.

Sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL | Materials: European flax linen

TripSavvy / Jackie Napalan

Our overall favorite travel pants were the Stretch High-Rise Joggers from Lululemon, which we loved for their butter-soft comfort, stretch, and stylish appearance. For something a little more formal, choose Quince’s elegant yet eminently practical Ultra-Stretch Ponte Straight Leg Pants .

Each pair of pants considered for this article went through the same real-life testing process. First, we unboxed and visually inspected the pants to gain an overall impression of material and construction quality. We tested the design and function of features, including pockets, zippers, buttons, and drawstrings; then put the pants on to perform a series of squats. This gave us an idea of their fit, breathability, and stretch.

Then, we wore each pair for at least four six-hour periods over two weeks. We wore them for traveling and everyday activities, including going to work, attending social events, and running errands. Finally, we washed the pants at least once according to the manufacturer’s care guidelines to see how well they held up. Each pair was scored from one to five for fit, comfort, quality, durability, design, and value, with overall scores informing our category winners.

What to Look For in Women's Travel Pants

Comfort and flexibility are key when it comes to travel pants, which is why many of our favorites are made from technical blends featuring materials like nylon, elastane, spandex, polyester, and Lycra. These blends are typically breathable and moisture-wicking, too, making them easily able to handle temperature changes and great for active vacation pursuits such as hiking or sightseeing tours. Natural materials like cotton and linen are also comfy and breathable, although you’ll have to pack carefully to avoid too many wrinkles.

The travel pants that we tested for this article ranged in price from $22 to $228, but the most affordable pair that scored highly enough to be featured cost $70. This is a good illustration of the old adage, “you get what you pay for,” and if you want a pair of pants that tick all the boxes for comfort, versatility, and durability, then you should expect to pay somewhere around the $100 mark. Although this may seem expensive, consider that you’ll be able to wear the right pair of travel pants over and over again on your trip and hopefully for many years to come.

Above all, travel pants should be comfortable. You want full freedom of movement so you can run for that bus, take on that hiking trail, or dance the night away at that sidewalk taverna. You also want to be able to sit comfortably for several hours while traveling without experiencing any uncomfortable pinching or compression. This either means choosing pants with a relaxed fit, or, if you prefer form-fitting leggings, opting for ones with super soft material, plenty of stretch, and a waistband that stays firmly in place without being too tight.

Style is very personal and there’s no right or wrong when it comes to travel pants (or any other clothing). Whatever style you go for, though, we recommend choosing one with plenty of versatility. That means pants that you can dress up with heels and a blazer for a night out or formal business meeting, for example, or pair with sneakers and a T-shirt for more casual adventures during the day. This way, you’ll cut down on the number of different pants you need to take and save extra space in your suitcase for other items.

Although pockets aren’t necessarily essential if you’re the kind of person who always travels with a purse or backpack, they can be a very handy addition to your travel pants. After all, how much easier is it to whip your passport out of your pocket at security than having to rummage through your purse for the 99th time? Look for pockets that are deep enough to hold your valuables securely, even when you’re sitting down. The smartest travel pants may even have a zippered pocket or a hidden pocket in the waistband to dissuade pickpockets.

Whether for women or for men , the best pair of travel pants is the one you feel most comfortable in. Generally speaking, opt for soft, stretchy fabrics or pants with a relaxed fit that won’t feel too restrictive after hours in one position on the airplane. Pockets are ideal for keeping essentials like your wallet, phone, or passport handy, while breathable, sweat-wicking materials are great if you’re headed somewhere warm. Finally, choosing pants that you can wear for different scenarios (from daytime sightseeing or hiking to dining out in the evening) will help you pack smarter and lighter.

When it comes to the kind of casual pants listed in this article (leggings, joggers, lightweight travel pants), the best way to pack for wrinkle-free results is to fold the pants in half vertically, then roll them up tightly starting from the waistband. Bonus: This is also a great space saver, giving you more room in your suitcase for other clothes or souvenirs you pick up along the way.

Pickpocket-Proof Clothing: 10 Garments to Protect Your Stuff

Travel Smarter! Sign up for our free newsletter.

Nothing sours a trip like having your belongings stolen by a pickpocket. But chances are, if you travel frequently—or just happen to be unlucky—a sticky-fingered stranger will one day secretly separate you from your stuff. Since traveling sans cash, credit cards, and other valuables isn’t an option for most of us, I’ve rounded up a passel of pickpocket-proof clothing and accessories that’ll make you less of a target for thieves.

Protect Yourself with Pickpocket-Proof Clothing

While no one can guarantee that these garments are 100 percent “pickpocket-proof,” they will make it a whole lot harder for opportunistic thieves to swipe your stuff.

Pierron & Co.’s Infinity Scarf

passport travel pants

When you’re in flight, don’t be the person who gets up to use the bathroom and carelessly leaves their passport and money behind in the seat. Instead, tuck your valuables into the large zippered pocket in Pierron & Co’s infinity scarf . Then wrap it around your neck and hit the aisle with style and your stuff securely in tow. Buyers praise not only the fully concealed zipper but also the quality and drape of the knit fabric, which makes this pickpocket-proof clothing a particularly worthy purchase.

Clothing Arts’ Pickpocket-Proof Business Travel Shirt

passport travel pants

I’ve seen casual men’s tops with concealed pockets, but work shirts? Not so much. So I was particularly impressed with Clothing Arts’ Pickpocket-Proof Business Travel Shirt , which has an inner zip pocket—suitable for flat items such as an ID, credit cards, and cash—hidden behind the breast pocket. A tailored but not tight fit makes it easy to wear tucked or untucked. Collar stays keep it looking sharp, and the cotton-polyester blend fabric is wrinkle-resistant and dries quickly.

SCOTTeVEST’s Boxer Briefs

passport travel pants

Whether they’re hitting the road or just the gym, men will appreciate SCOTTeVEST’s boxer briefs , which have pockets to hold valuables close. Made of sweat-wicking, odor-resistant, and synthetic-blend fabric with a non-constrictive fit, the shorts have an exterior front pocket for a phone, cash, or credit cards. On the opposite side is a concealed interior one that’s large enough to comfortably hold a passport.

Clothing Arts’ Travel Wrap Skirt

passport travel pants

Admittedly, Clothing Arts’ travel wrap skirt isn’t the prettiest skirt I’ve ever seen, but what you lose in style you’ll gain in utility. With an impressive five zippered pockets (three on the side, two in the back) for secreting your stuff, this pickpocket-proof clothing has a flat-front, knee-length design that’s universally flattering, and the man-made fabric is quick-drying and water-repellent, with SPF 50 protection. Available in khaki, navy, and black, it’s a way smarter alternative to cargo shorts.

SCOTTeVEST’s TEC Hat

passport travel pants

A baseball cap is pretty much the last place a pickpocket is going to try to target, which makes SCOTTeVEST’s TEC Hat all the more ingenious. From the outside the topper looks like any other, but there’s a key pocket under the brim and a side pocket with a concealed zipper for cash or a credit card. Mesh lining makes this pickpocket-proof clothing cool to wear even in steamy temps. The strap adjusts to fit most, and the cap is available in black and gray, with or without the company logo.

Lululemon’s Stash ‘n’ Run Bra

passport travel pants

When you’re running in a new environment, you want to be focused on your surroundings, not worrying about the safety of your stuff. Lululemon’s Stash ‘n’ Run bra alleviates women’s angst with two front pockets for unobtrusively storing a room key, ID, cash, and credit cards. Made of stretchy, sweat-wicking fabric and offering medium support, it also fits the bill for other workouts. Bonus: The rear straps look cute under open-back tops.

Aday’s Throw It Higher Leggings

passport travel pants

Travelers who don’t want to sacrifice style for security should consider Aday’s Throw It Higher Leggings . Full length and high-waisted with a firm fit, they have small zip pockets in the front, plus a hip pocket that’s large enough for a cell phone and high enough that it’s concealed under tunic-length tops. Sweat-wicking, pill-resistant technical fabric makes the leggings suitable for workouts, and fashion-forward accents (think gunmetal self-locking zips and a wet-look fabric waistband) make them equally appropriate for street wear.

passport travel pants

If you’ve ever furtively tucked a $20 bill or credit card into your bra, you’ll immediately understand the thinking behind Pocket Bra , a lightly padded demi-cup that has pockets in its cups and along its sides, designed expressly for this purpose. Available in black and pink, the bra looks just like a regular one, complete with lace detailing at the center and sides, so it can be worn confidently with sheer tops and evening wear.

Lululemon’s ABC Pant Classic

passport travel pants

Lululemon’s bestselling ABC Pant Classic is popular for its streamlined yet comfy “anti-ball crushing” (yes, that’s what “ABC” stands for) design. But the casual trousers—essentially a smarter, stretchy non-denim version of classic five-pocket jeans—are also a great choice for men who want to tote their passports incognito. Just tuck it into the concealed-zip back pocket of these pickpocket-proof pants, and you’re good to go.

SCOTTeVEST’s Chloe Glow

passport travel pants

A hoodie that has a whopping 18 pockets but still looks like a regular hoodie? Sign me up for SCOTTeVEST’s Chloe Glow . Surprisingly sleek-looking, this capacious hoodie jacket has interior pockets specifically designed for not only keys, credit cards, and cash but also for glasses (with a chamois cleaning cloth attached), a tablet, and a lipstick. Its Spandex-blend fabric is moisture-wicking, and thumbholes in the sleeves keep wrists toasty and fingers free. The Chloe Glow comes in white, black, red, or blue.

Conquer Travel Days With These 11 Perfect "Plane Pants"

U nless your flight is under two hours or you identify strongly with the sociopathic community, you shouldn’t be flying in proper jeans . Or chinos . Or khakis. Pack all the stiff, scratchy, belt-requiring pair of pants you want, but don’t wear them to the airport. This, of course, presents the general conundrum of not looking like a total scrub at the airport — while the ’90s era of massive airport ‘fits are long gone, it doesn’t mean you need to look like you just rolled out of bed. No, you need a pair of travel pants.

  • Best Overall Travel Pants: lululemon ABC Slim-Fit Pant 32″ Warpstreme
  • Best Casual Travel Pants: Public Rec All Day Every Day Pant
  • Best Hybrid Travel Pants: Mack Weldon Radius Flex Jogger
  • Best Office Travel Pants: Rhone Commuter Pants
  • Best Travel Sweats: Vuori Ponto Performance Pants
  • Best Travel Suit Pants: Buck Mason Carry-On Pants

Flights are uncomfortable enough (and getting more uncomfortable — less legroom is the new normal) without you needing to fidget and readjust after every hint of turbulence . No matter what’s waiting at your destination, whether it’s a meeting, a honeymoon , or just home, it was always worth taking two minutes postbaggage-check and pre-Uber to commandeer an airport bathroom stall and, dopp kit in hand, change into something more presentable, than to sacrifice comfort for a formal aesthetic.

What Is a Travel Pant?

There’s no need to change these days. A cohort of young, plucky labels and heritage brands alike have taken it upon themselves to create a new breed of pants in recent years that match (or even trump) the comfort of a pajama pant or sweatpant , in colors and cuts that look appropriate in a variety of situations, whether with sneakers or chukka boots .

These new digs are ultra-technical, often sporting weather (or more likely, spill) resistant materials and sweat-wicking tech for the most comfortable possible ride. Interal drawstrings or self-belting e-waists are industry standard, as are a cabal of pockets for everything from your passport to your Nintendo Switch. They’re a fortunate offshoot of the clothing revolution pioneered by activewear, and perfectly applicable to a day spent at the airport and in the sky.

Below, we’ve rounded up 11 superior examples from brands in the menswear space. These pants often have stretch capabilities (with cotton-synthetic blends), come packed with zippered pockets, and will not require you to take off a belt in the security line. They’re all comfy as hell, too, and easy to fall asleep in when it matters most. From Mack Weldon to lululemon, here are the best travel pants in 2023.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants in 2023:

The best overall travel pants: lululemon abc slim-fit pant 32″ warpstreme.

Some of the best tech pants you’re going to find here, and a long-time favorite of InsideHook editors. True to form for Lulu, this is an article of clothing that far outperforms its price tag. These four-way stretch pants are comprised of a polyester-nylon blend and feature two deep hand pockets, so you don’t lose your passport back at baggage check. One of our editors once said he wants to be buried in them, so if that’s not enough to pick up a couple of pairs we don’t know what is.

The Best Casual Travel Pants: Public Rec All Day Every Day Pant

Chicago-based Public Rec was a Kickstarter darling back in 2015 when they sold 2,000 pairs of sweatpants. They’ve since branched out to all manner of versatile activewear, but the original All Day Every Pant is still their crown jewel, and now available in nine different colors. What makes it so special? Four zippered pockets, tapered legs, elastic waistband, and creatively — a faux front fly, so you’ll look reasonably formal. Joke’s on them.

The Best Hybrid Travel Pants: Mack Weldon Radius Flex Jogger

Much like their other wares — Mack’s Silver Trunk took top prize in our best underwear round-up earlier this year — Mack Weldon’s in-house comfiness gold standard applies to its pants, too, which are made from a technical, weather-resistant blend. Prepping for a big meeting mere hours after you land? Probably not a bad idea for any flight out of your time zone to just wear Mack Weldon briefs and a pair of the office-appropriate Radius Flex Joggers. That combo could even make the middle seat bearable.

The Best Office Travel Pants: Rhone Commuter Pants

They may be priced at a premium, but you know what you’re getting with Rhone. They’ve doubled down on their “transit” offerings in recent years, often with surprisingly formal-seeming looks. For those extremely busy, completely-unwilling-to-get-changed folks, you can reasonably wear these to a meeting for dinner. They’re made from a Japanese stretch fabric that’s got a bit of polyester, so they’ll come in handy, too, if you’ve gotta make a run for the gate. Choose from a ton of colors, and pick your exact size.

The Best Travel Sweats: Vuori Ponto Performance Pants

We wear these pants to the gym over a pair of shorts, usually with keys and assorted cards tucked into the zippered back pocket. They are unconscionably soft and made by Vuori, a San Diego County-based activewear brand that’s been around since 2013. This is a great option for people who don’t vibe with the tailored look of a jogger or ribbed sweatpants; it’s a straight travel pant, and loose in all the right regions.

Best Travel Suit Pants: Buck Mason The Carry-On Pant

Matching perfectly with one of our favorite travel blazers , the Buck Mason Carry-On Pant’s lightweight 5.5 oz twill blend gives it just enough shape and weight to stay relatively unhampered and fundamentally comfortable, even considering it’s dressed-up vibe. Ditch the massive garment bag and avoid cramming your wedding get-up into the weekender — just were these bad boys on the plane, instead.

Women’s travel pants with the best pockets (that aren’t cargo pockets).

Women’s pants with pockets are hard to find. It’s even harder to find women’s pants with secure pockets to use when traveling.

We’ve scoured the internet, checked our closets, and asked our friends for recommendations to bring you this round-up of the best women’s travel pants with the best pockets.

What Makes a Good Travel Pocket

Now when it comes to pockets, there are good pockets and then there are less-than-ideal pockets. Not all pockets are created equally! There are so many women’s pants out there with pockets that can barely fit your chapstick never mind your phone or passport.

Not to mention the fake pockets. No, thank you!

We might love our Anatomie Skyler Pants for their lightweight and quick-drying capabilities, but they don’t have the most amazing pockets.

Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for women’s travel pants with pockets:

  • Pockets should be deep enough for a cell phone or passport .
  • Zippered pockets will keep your valuables from falling out when rushing to your connecting flight or navigating a busy street. Plus, zips provide an extra level of security.
  • Women’s travel pants with hidden pockets are ideal for storing your valuables away from the prying eyes of pickpockets.
  • You’re going to want a mix of hard-to-access pockets (for keeping things you won’t need often safe in high pickpocket areas) and easy-to-access pockets (for the airport, shops. restaurants, etc).
  • A variety of pocket types will allow you to store all your valuables comfortably and securely.

Our Top Travel Pants with Secure Pockets

We’ve rounded up our top picks for every occasion.

Other Features to Look for in Travel Pants

Now while it is important to have travel pants with secure pockets, there are some other features you are going to want to look out for in your travel pants too.

  • At HPL, we are obsessed with quick-drying travel clothing and your travel pants are no different. One of the easiest ways to travel light is to pack less and wash your clothes on the road . Quick-drying clothing will make this process a whole lot easier! We have a guide to finding affordable quick-drying travel clothes on the blog.
  • When looking for pants that are suitable for your travels, you don’t always have to shop at specialty travel stores. Rather, keep an eye out for certain fabrics . We have a blog post on the best fabrics for travel clothing so you can know exactly which fabrics to shop and which to avoid.
  • Any pants that are convertible will save you space in your bag as you are getting multiple items for the space of one . If you are in the market for some new travel pants, convertible travel clothing should definitely be on your list!  For some convertible travel clothing inspiration, check out how Elizabeth styled four multi-way clothing items to create eight unique outfits .
  • Pants that are moisture-wicking ‘wick’ moisture away from your skin and allow it to evaporate more easily . Yes, please!
  • When packing pants into your bag, wrinkles are bound to occur. Solve this problem by buying wrinkle-resistant pants. However, if your pants aren’t wrinkle-resistant, there are some ways to pack to prevent wrinkles .
  • If you’re planning on hiking through tropical rainforests or spending the day by the water, you’ll want some pants that are water-repellent or water-resistant .
  • While you should always wear sunscreen, pants with built-in sun protection give you an extra layer of protection.

We’ve rounded up some of the best travel pants with pockets (and many with other travel-friendly features as well). You’re sure to find something in whatever style you are looking for.

Packing Light Travel

Stop pickpockets with an assortment of anti-pickpocket gear

by Anne Betts | Mar 22, 2024 | Travel Gear , home featured , Packing Light Travel Gear | 28 comments

anti-pickpocket-gear

Updated March 22, 2024

Lurking under the surface of some of the world’s most beautiful cities are hordes of pickpockets preying on unsuspecting, unprepared, and distracted visitors. Pickpockets and other street thieves are proficient at what they do. They’re a curse to travellers, but they can be thwarted with some basic anti-pickpocket gear .

Identifying appropriate anti-pickpocket gear should be part of a packing strategy for most trips.

Table of Contents

Other benefits of anti-pickpocket gear

1. outerwear with zippered internal pockets, 2. other clothing with pockets, (i) pocket clips, pouches, and tethers, (iii) pouch on a leash, 4. underwear with pockets, 5. socks with a zippered pocket, 6. scarves with hidden pockets, 7. bracelet wallet, 8. wristband wallet, (i) waist wallet, (ii) leg wallet, (iii) portapocket, 10. other wallets, 11. security belt, (i) triple combination lock, (ii) lock and cable, (iii) bag cover, (i) external security, (ii) internal security, 14. packing organizers with attachment points, 15. packable travel purse, 16. ‘bra bank’, 17. other clothing and accessories with pockets, 18. anti-theft bag, emergency cash stash.

  • The right gear lessens the chance of losing something because of disorganization, carelessness, or neglect.
  • It presents different options for splitting up cash, financial cards, and identity documents. When these are in separate places, your risks and losses are minimized of you’re robbed.
  • Anti-pickpocket clothing can help avoid baggage fees. What you wear doesn’t count against your baggage allowance. It’s surprising how much can be carried in clothing with pockets. In outerwear with pockets, I’ve stowed 1.4 kg / 3.1 lb of stuff. It’s not a huge amount but when travelling on airlines with a 7-kg or 8-kg carry-on allowance, it can mean the difference between going carry-on and having to check a bag.

A comprehensive assortment of anti-pickpocket gear

What’s in your anti-pocket inventory? Most items in my collection of commercially produced and handmade products have one thing in common — at least two steps are required to access my belongings. It’s less convenient for me, but it’s more difficult for experienced pickpockets who view open bags or single zippers as easy terrain and rely on stealth and speed to make a hasty retreat.

Having a variety of anti-pickpocket gear means a traveller can be selective when choosing what might work best given the season, destination, and nature of the trip.

Might some of the following suggestions work for you? Or, perhaps they’ll inspire other ideas or adaptations that are consistent with your packing regimen, travel wardrobe, and travel habits.

SCOTTeVEST is well known for its range of clothing with pockets. Some items boast as many as 43 pockets — some designed for keys, sunglasses, passport, tablet, phone, pen, and a water bottle. Most pockets are on the inside, with zippers, useful as anti-pickpocket gear. I have a 14-pocket Chloe Hoodie , and a 20-pocket lightweight travel vest .

scottevest-vest-packed-with-in-flight-essentials

Brooklyn-based company Clothing Arts makes a variety of anti-pickpocket gear. I adore my Cubed Travel Jacket that’s ideal for three-season travel. It boasts eight internal pockets that are perfect for stowing a lot of gear when going carryon or exploring a destination.

clothing-arts-travel-jacket

3. Engineered pockets

Inserted pockets, and adaptations to existing pockets, can transform existing travel clothing into effective anti-pickpocket gear.

Place a tether tab inside a phone case and attach a retractable coil leash. The wallet phone case from Smartish has a secure pocket for cash and a few cards, and the Cocases phone tether tab with an adhesive backing stays in place when fixed to the inside of the case. A retractable coil with a lobster clasp at each end allows for easy access to a phone while remaining attached to the pocket. The leash comes in two different lengths.

phone-retractable-coil-leash

(ii) Added pockets

anti-pickpocket-inserted-pocket-with-zipper

Some of my trips involve cycling. That’s when my three-quarter cycling knicks might earn a place on my packing list. Two internal credit-card sized pockets in the back of my cycling pants accommodate a financial card and cash in a small zip-top craft baggie. Each pocket has a flap for enhanced security.

anti-pickpocket-inside-pocket

For women, tights and leggings are perfect for packing light travel. They’re comfortable, lightweight, and versatile. They can be dressed up or down, used as loungewear, sleepwear, exercise gear, or for an extra layer of warmth when the temperature drops. A credit-card-sized pocket added to the inside waistband of tights expands options for separating financial cards or not carrying a purse.

pocket-for-credit-card-in-tights

Lululemon leggings have a permanent place on my packing list. The Fast and Free have five waistband pockets and two side drop-in pockets. The Pace Rival Crop have five pockets: three on the waistband and two on the thighs. The zippered pocket in the back of the waistband is particularly useful. Under a long shirt or tunic, it’s hidden from view but not inaccessible to a pickpocket. For added security, a silk pouch on a leash has been attached to the lining of the pocket.

anti-pickpocket-pouch-on-leash

These engineered pockets haven’t failed me yet. I can’t imagine a skilled pickpocket making off with my belongings without my knowledge. This isn’t to say I can let my guard down or underestimate how skillful some pickpockets are. What I can count on is that there are plenty of easier targets to attract a pickpocket’s attention.

pickpocket-target-phone-in-back-pocket

There’s a variety of underwear with pockets on the market. I’ve worn four types and prefer the designs from Clever Travel Companion and H&R:

  • Clever Travel Companion’s Women’s Cotton Underwear with Secret Pockets
  • H&R Underwear with Secret Pockets

Both have two zippered pockets, in front under the waistband. They’re very comfortable, and versatile enough to wear as loungewear after a long travel day. They’re also soft enough to wear as sleepwear. This is handy for sleeping with valuables on a sleeper bus, overnight train, or in communal accommodation. Of the two, I prefer H&R (black ones in the picture). They’re much cheaper, lighter (73 g / 2.6 oz compared to 90 g / 3.2 oz), and dry faster.  They’re longer by 2 in / 5 cm and as such, I’ve worn them as shorts. The pockets are a little wider so a passport slides in easier than it does in a Clever Travel Companion pocket.

anti-pickpocket-underwear-with-pockets

I haven’t tried one, but The Travel Bra makes several different types of travel bras. The quick-dry Ultra-Light Travel Bra with pockets has five, including one drop-down mesh pocket large enough to accommodate a passport.

My Zip It Everyday Travel Socks with a hidden zippered pocket are very comfortable. Each pair has one pocket that’s large enough to carry emergency cash and financial cards. The pocket is high enough that the contents don’t come in contact with the ankle joint or interfere with the movement of my foot. The elasticized band is effective at keeping things in place. The pocket feels just as comfortable on the inside of my leg as it does on the outside.

The pocket has a nylon zipper that won’t set off security systems. The socks’ quick-drying properties mean that I can wash them in the evening and they’re dry by morning. Zip It Gear advertises a couple of technical benefits: a holofibre footbed that may reduce swelling, and ComFortrel XP that wicks away moisture to keep feet cool and dry.

anti-pickpocket-socks-with-zipper

Scarves with pockets are triple-duty accessories. They provide warmth, dress up an outfit, and protect valuables. I have a rectangular scarf with a hidden pocket but it doesn’t feel as secure as my two infinity scarves. An infinity scarf consists of one long circular loop, usually wrapped twice around the neck.

Both of my infinity scarves have hidden pockets that are large enough to accommodate a passport. However, I find the pockets work better for carrying a financial card and some cash.

Two layers of fabric wrapped twice around the neck translate into four layers, with another two layers at the position of the pocket. While a scarf may be advertised as lightweight, my experience is that a scarf with so many layers of fabric is comfortable for temperatures that don’t exceed 20 or so degrees Celsius.

The reversible scarf from Etsy worked perfectly for an autumn trip to New York. With so many Etsy sellers advertising such a rich array of colours, it’s not difficult to find something compatible with your travel wardrobe.

anti-pickpocket-infinity-scarf-with-zipper

My bracelet wallet dresses up an outfit. It’s light, classy, and functional. The pocket sits on the back of the wrist, blending into the design. As such, it’s mostly hidden from sight. The pocket accommodates a credit card, hotel room card key, and emergency money. I bought it from Etsy seller HelgaRachinskaya.

anti-pickpocket-pocket-bracelet

My Sprigs Banjees Wrist Wallet has two pockets, one with a hood and one with a zipper. The hooded pocket can accommodate a phone but I find it’s a ‘stretch’ to fit a larger phone. The pocket boasts a reinforced hole through which to thread headphone wires. The zippered pocket is perfect for a financial card, cash, and keys. The lightweight fabric makes it very comfortable to wear.

9. Wearable security wallets

Love ‘em or hate ‘em. Wearable security wallets tend to sit close to the skin. This can be an aggravation for many travellers, especially in warm climates. The secret to travelling with security wallets is not to treat them as a purse or wallet. Treat them as a walking safe, accessed in private if and when necessary.

A security waist wallet is my preferred under-clothing security wallet. It feels more comfortable and more secure than those designed to be worn around the leg, neck, or shoulder.

My favourite is the PacSafe RFID Safe 100 , an RFID-blocking travel waist wallet. It has a moisture-proof liner and breathable backing with anti-odour treatment. A handy internal pocket snugly accommodates a financial card. One of the wallet’s best features is that each one of the two zippers has a snap-shut lock that takes a little effort to open. My first purchase was one in grey but it developed a soiled and grimy look after several years of use. I now have one in black.

This type of waist wallet sits comfortably in the small of the back, out of sight under a shirt, tucked under a waistband. Most of the time, I’m unaware of its existence. This wasn’t the case with a neck wallet purchased for a winter trip to Rome several years ago. It was adequate for that trip tucked under layers of winter clothing. But, for travel to warmer climates, the neck string was exposed, it was uncomfortable against my neck, and was visible under summer clothing.

PortaPocket has a selection of bands and portable pockets of different sizes that can be worn around the waist, arm, or leg. Some attach using Velcro, but I feel more secure wearing those with belt-loop style mountings.

There’s a good chance a wallet that can be attached to the inside of clothing out of sight is out of reach of pickpockets. Especially if it has an attachment point to pin or clip it to clothing or hardware sewn into a pocket or purse.

My favourite is the FurArt Slim Minimalist Wallet with several attractive features. Its RFID-blocking capabilities protect identity and financial cards, and two of the six card slots each has a finger groove for pushing cards out easily. Two of the slots are side pockets, ideal for banknotes. A feature rarely found in a wallet is a D-ring for tethering the wallet to an attachment point in a purse or pocket. It measures 8 x 11.7 x 0.6 cm (3.15 x 4.6 x 0.25 in) and weighs 31 g (1.1 oz).

One of the best features of the Lewis N Clark Clip Stash is that it can be attached to a waistband or sock and worn inside clothing, hidden from view. Or it could be clipped to an inside pocket of a bag to prevent it from roaming free and being difficult to find. The zippered pocket secures what’s placed inside, and the RFID-blocking capabilities protect identity and financial cards from electronic pickpocketing. The plastic clip is 5 cm (2 in) long and relatively sturdy. An adaptation can be made by attaching a small key ring to the zipper pull and tethering the Clip Stash to an attachment point inside a pocket or purse. It’s made of a nylon TravelDry fabric and weighs 20 g (0.7 oz).

A long zippered pocket on the inside of a security belt can keep cash secure. Mine has a plastic buckle that doesn’t trigger security alarms, and a long 18-inch zipper. It’s versatile enough to wear with trousers, shorts, and skorts. Most belts on the market are black, brown, grey, or camouflage. The Canadian company Silverfoot produces belts and other travel accessories in a variety of vibrant colours and designs. At Silverfoot, you’re bound to find something compatible with the dominant colours of your capsule wardrobe. And because it doesn’t look like all the other security belts on the market, it’s less likely to attract the attention of street thieves. It can be used to carry emergency or surplus cash, folded along the length to create six panels.

12. Securing luggage

Pickpockets prowl airports, transportation hubs, and connecting transit for newly arrived or soon-to-depart travellers. Most people can’t carry all their valuables on their person, making an unsecured bag a tantalizing target.

A padlock can be an effective deterrent. My favourite is a triple cable combination lock . The shorter cable connects the two sets of interlocking zippers of my standard carry on. The longer cable connects the zippers to the carrying handle or a stationary object. I can remove the longer cable when it’s not needed. Another attractive feature of my cable lock is that to date, it has fit all lockers I’ve encountered. An advantage of a combination lock is that there’s no key to worry about losing.

A lightweight cable used to be a discretionary item, but it now accompanies me on every trip. The turning point was when a flight from San Francisco to Halifax via Newark became a San Francisco – Houston – Toronto – Halifax diversion. That was when spending six overnight hours in the Houston airport became a simpler alternative to finding a hotel. How does one keep carry-on bags secure while nodding off? Attach a cable and lock to a belt, belt loop, and/or a fixed object. My lightweight metre-long cable is part of the Eagle Creek 3-dial TSA Lock and Cable set .

Another option is a retractable cable. The Pacsafe Retractable Cable Lock is easier to pack as it takes up less space and weighs the same as the Eagle Creek lock and cable combined (48 g / 1.7 oz). A lock and cable are handy for attaching a locked bag to a fixed object on a train or in a hotel or hostel.

Some bags have an integrated rain cover. If not, there are plenty of covers on the market that fit bags within a certain size range. For example, my Osprey Ultralight Raincover (medium) fits bags within the 30 to 40-litre range. It has a drawstring that cinches around and under the bag for a snug fit, offering protection against wet and dusty conditions. An added advantage is that it offers a barrier to pickpockets.

1 3. Securing a day bag

Several years ago, I bought the very comfortable and functional personal carry-on/daypack: Tom Bihn Synapse 19 . Today, I tend to travel with a packable daypack that can nest inside my main carry-on bag when I don’t want to deal with two bags. My favourite is the Osprey Ultralight Dry Stuff Pack .

Unfortunately, neither bag locks. However, adjacent zipper pulls can be joined with S-biner clips, stainless steel wire keychain cables , twist ties, safety pins, or a small lock.

anti-pickpocket-cable-on-daypack

My Hi-Vis Osprey Raincover offers a measure of protection from the prying fingers of pickpockets. This is an option on crowded public transportation or city streets where pickpockets are active. The XS size fits packs in the 10- to 20-litre range.

One of the many attractive features of the Synapse 19 (and other Tom Bihn bags) is the internal bag hardware: an O-ring in each of the five compartments.

Is it possible to attach plastic O-rings or D-rings to the internal seams of an existing bag with sewing tape? This adds an additional layer of security for tethering pouches containing more valuable items.

daypack-with-plastic-o-rings-added

Tom Bihn and Eagle Creek produce pouches with swivel clips. Travelon makes a set of packing envelopes with a small fabric loop on the side of each one. Other packing organizers have zipper pulls, hanging loops, carrying handles, key rings, carabiners, grommets, or drawstring. These all represent attachment points for tethering the organizer to something else.

Or check out Etsy for handmade packing organizers. Ask if it’s possible to have a built-in O-ring or cord for tethering to internal bag hardware.

anti-pickpocket-packing-organizers

One of my favourite commercially produced tethering tools is the key strap from Tom Bihn. One version has swivel clips at both ends. The other version has a swivel clip at one end and an O-ring at the other. Both versions come in two lengths: 8 in / 20 cm or 16 in / 40 cm. My handmade tethering straps are 6 in / 15 cm long with swivel clips at both ends. All are useful for attaching to internal bag hardware such as O-rings, D-rings, and key clips.

My new favourite tethering tool is a retractable coil with a lobster clasp at each end. The lobster clasp isn’t easy to release quickly so it’s more difficult for a pickpocket to be successful.

To access my belongings, a pickpocket would need to negotiate the hardware joining the zipper pulls. S/he would then need to open the zipper of the respective compartment. Then, s/he’d need to open a second zipper of the pouch or unclip the swivel clip attaching the pouch to the O-ring. I like to think this kind of obstacle course is a suitable deterrent to someone who needs to move quickly.

The other advantage of tethered packing organizers is that I don’t need to rummage through the cavernous expanse of the main compartment of my daypack to find what I need. It’s much easier and faster to put my hands on the respective pouch, usually by touch.

My favourite type of travel purse is one that can be worn from door to door, removed only at security screening when it can be packed out of sight inside another bag. My handmade version has served me well for many years but for my last trip (to Africa), I took the Tom Bihn Side Kick  that’s lightweight, packable, has several internal compartments, and five plastic O-rings for securing more valuable items.

purse-with-retractable-tether-straps

Everything of value was tethered to an O-ring. We were advised that phones are coveted by thieves in South Africa so I purchased a longer ( 8 in / 20 cm Patikil-brand coiled keychain ) for my phone that I could use without removing the retractable coil. When tethered to a corner O-ring, it was a simple matter of closing the zipper to conceal the contents of the purse from view when quickly consulting Google Maps or booking an Uber.

Other anti-pickpocket gear

Reader Marti Goldring described her ‘bra bank’ in a comment on an earlier version of this post. She graciously agreed to provide more details for this update.

Marti fashioned a leash for her Eagle Creek Silk Undercover Bra Stash . A loop at one end rests under the snap enclosure of the bra stash pocket, and the other end attaches to a bra strap. The pocket fits comfortably inside her sports bra between her breasts. It’s a perfect resting place hidden from sight. The extra security provided by the leash means that Marti can rest assured the pocket can’t come loose and fall without her knowledge.

anti-pickpocket-gear-bra-bank-on-leash

Pacsafe makes a bra pouch in a soft lingerie fabric with an adjustable strap for attaching to the centre or side of a bra.It can hold up to six financial cards, a key, and some cash.

Headwear with built-in zippered pockets, especially those that are hidden from view, might offer another option. There are caps with inside pockets . A scrunchie with a zippered pocket might be of interest to someone with long hair.

A scarf camera strap with a zippered pocket may be more comfortable than a regular camera strap and perform double duty  for storing a phone, cash, and extra memory card.

If an anti-theft backpack, travel bag, tote, or purse   holds any appeal, there are plenty on the market. Designed for travel, these bags have features such as cut-proof, steel-cable-reinforced shoulder straps, slash-proof fabric, RFID-blocking pockets, and locking zippers.

This was the situation for LeeAnna Pekel, a member of the Facebook group Girls Love Travel . LeeAnna purchased a Pacsafe CitySafe 200 for a trip to Paris. Here is her story, reproduced with permission:

“I’d read lots of posts on Girls Love Travel describing thefts from purses and pockets. I realize this happens to travelers, but I was naive in thinking ‘That’ll never happen to me.’ Luckily, I work with some amazing women, including an older woman named Suzy. Suzy has traveled the world and is never short of a story to share. When I told her I was taking my mom to Paris for the holidays, she started sharing pickpocket stories. She’s 65 years old so she had a lot of them. Her advice was to buy a purse produced by a company called Pacsafe. I researched my options, thinking it sounded like a good, but needless idea. I bought two — one for me, and one for my mom.

Fast forward to this morning. My mom and I got up bright and early at 5:30 am to go on a day-long tour outside of Paris. We stopped at the bank near our Airbnb apartment in Montmartre to withdraw some cash. I checked for cameras or a card reader, saw nothing and went ahead. While doing so, a woman walked into the ATM area, stood off to the side and looked out the window. She was watching me via the reflection. Thinking she wanted my PIN and didn’t get it, we left.

On the subway, a man who appeared to be homeless came up to us and started begging. He even touched me when I ignored him. I told him not to touch me but he kept hounding me. We ended up moving away out of fear. As we got off the subway, two younger men followed us. My mother, being older, was slower on the stairs and the men surrounded her — one in front and one in back. When I stopped, they walked past me and started speaking in rapid fire French. “Did you see that bag?” “I’ve never seen anything like it before!” “It’s impossible to do!”

Listening to Suzy and buying this bag saved us from a tag team of at least four pickpockets in Paris this morning. I highly recommend Pacsafe. They also have backpacks!”

Baggalini, Pacsafe and Travelon make a variety of anti-theft bags.

An emergency cash stash is for those occasions when you most need to put your hands on some cash. It’s based on a divide-and-conquer approach that results in never keeping travel cash (and financial cards) in one place. Doing so puts a traveller at a huge risk.

Creative suggestions abound. Most of them offer a host of options on how to hide cash from the prying fingers of pickpockets. Here are a some examples:

  • Place cash in a small zip-top baggie and insert it under the insole of your shoe. Or, place cash in a small pouch and pin it to the inside of a sock or the seam of trousers. Slip it into a slit in the hem or waistband of trousers.
  • Create a ‘pocket’ from a sock or pantyhose that can be attached to the inside of clothing with a safety pin.
  • Attach a canister ( CashStash ) on a key ring to internal bag hardware.
  • My handmade packing folder has a secret pocket in the base, hidden underneath a stack of clothes.

emergency-cash-stash-in-packing-folder

  • Create a DIY diversion safe by hiding cash in empty containers (e.g., dental floss, deodorant, lip balm, prescription bottle).
  • Check out commercial diversion safes. For example, there are plastic containers resembling lipstick , sunscreen diversion safes , and a Mennen Speed Stick with fake deodorant on top on the safe. A USB charger diversion safe could be stored in an electronics kit.
  • Might a water bottle with a hidden compartment be of interest?
  • Use duct tape (matching the internal colour of your bag) to tape a zip-top baggie containing cash to the base of the inside of your bag.
  • Tape a zip-top baggie with cash to the inside back cover of a small notebook or diary, or inside a first aid kit or comfort pack.
  • Use a phone cover with a slot to hide emergency money and/or a back-up financial card.
  • Insert cash in a slit in a sanitary napkin, or in a box of tampons or panty liners.

Once you’ve perfected your strategy, remember where you stashed your cash. For each place, choose a single undamaged note in a currency and denomination that will be easy to change. Protect notes with a zip-top craft bag or cling wrap if they’re likely to come in contact with tape, perspiration, moisture, or residue from the original product of a repurposed container.

Great tips! I have security pouch, too. It is not very stylish but I admit is useful. I am going to spend one week in London. I put separately my credit card and my ATM card. Just in case.. Best regards!

Kayy

These are very helpful suggestions for travelers to stay safe . My friend was almost a victim of pocket picking but he had his wallet on his belt . I have to try out the bra bank when I remember to wear a bra lol . I also love hiding money in unpredictable places .

Dominique Lombard

These are very practical tips! I’ll be traveling solo in South America for 10 months next year and I’ll certainly make use of many of the recommendations in this post.

Happy travels! Dominique

Anne Betts

Hi Anne, I’m so happy I found your blog! I have been binge reading it and I’m learning so much! Like you, I am an avid cyclist and often travel solo, so I am always looking for redundant systems in case of emergency. I want to share something that I learned along the way. I have something that I call my “bra bank.” I have a satin pocket – the size of a credit card – with a snap closure. Mine is similar to the Eagle Creek Silk Undercover Bra Stash. My seamstress friend made a short elastic “leash” with and I slide the satin pocket on the elastic and attach the leash to my bra strap. Then I slip the pocket inside my sports bra between my breasts. There is a perfect little resting space for it in the center. It is comfortable to wear there, feels secure, and doesn’t show. If my primary ATM or credit card is stolen or damaged, I have back ups from a different financial institution “on hand.” 🙂 Keep blogging. You are fabulous!

Sarah

Thank you for this thorough and informative guide! I was very apprehensive about my upcoming trip to India and now I am at ease shopping for a vest ^_^

Moumita Mallick

This is such an awesome post and very helpful. I really don’t like to worry about anything when I’m travelling and worrying about money is the last thing I want to do. Thanks for this awesome tips.

Stephanie Lee

These are very helpful tips for anybody traveling abroad! Thanks for sharing! During the time of my travelling, i have had the habit of keeping anything valuable within 2 layers of protection. Like you keep your wallet in pocket of your back pack that was zipped inside another pocket that was also zipped… i hope that makes sense haha! https://qompanion.my/articles/items-stolen-from-travellers-on-holiday i also found this article when i was looking for information about this issue, hopefully it’s relevant!

Mark

Great tips. After catching a pickpocket with his hand in my pocket on the Brussels metro, I always take precautions. I like the D ring inside a pocket idea. To save sewing, I use a nappy safety pin and mini carabiniers with (military strength) parachute cord in dark colours as a tether, cut to required length with heat sealed cut ends. These can also be discretely looped around trouser belts or belt loops. Washing tablet drawstring mesh bags containing cash and cards can be hung inside trousers, again from a belt or safety pin inside your waistband.

UK brands Craghoppers and Rohan make brilliant travel clothes with hidden zippered pockets.

Mobile phones can be protected with locking/SIM change blocking software that sends SMS / email alerts with location, snapshot of user and remote erase functions.

Heather

This is so so helpful! Thank you for the share, I’ll definitely be using some of these tactics on our next trip to Barcelona!

Cecilia

These are all great ideas to prevent being pickpocketed. There are a few times during my travels where I was concerned about this very thing. I just kept my money in my bra and left everything else at home. These gear items would have been a good alternative!

Catherine

Thankfully I’ve never been targeted by pickpockets or lost anything that way. I love all these recommendations to stop pickpockets! I’d never heard of zippered socks before but that’s so clever!

Jen Nilsson

Wow! Nobody is going to be picking your pockets, that’s for sure! I consider myself a pretty wary traveler, but I still got my wallet stolen on the train from the airport to my hotel in Barcelona. I definitely wouldn’t have lost that wallet with all of these tips. Especially the socks! I had no idea there were socks with pockets and I’m a sock connoisseur! Thank you for these tips.

Deb

I’m super fortunate that I’ve never been targeted by pickpockets on my travels, but I’m always very cautious when I’m out and about. I love these tools to prevent theft. Who knew you could get socks and underwear with pockets??? I love the idea of pouches on clips and leashes too. I’ll definitely pick up some of these tools before my next trip. Thanks for the great guide!

Emma

So many pockets!!! And so many genius ways to fool pickpockets. Unfortunately I’ve been pickpocketed before and it’s not fun, especially on the first day of vacation as it forever leaves you with a sour taste about that place. I’ve been meaning to get one of those scarves! I am someone who always hides money when I travel, my emergency stash. I usually hide in the pages of books because I figure no-one will steal my boring holiday novel

The Checklist Chic

These are such great tips to prevent pick pockets! Thank you!

Krista

These are all great ideas I hadn’t thought of before! I really like the pockets in the underwear idea!

Shafinah

Absolutely lovin’ the bra bank! Nothing’s gonna get picked unnoticed with this one 😅 I’d say that’s probably the best of the lot!

Marina

I only use a security pouch and always have my rain cover on my backpack but you have some amazing tips! Thank you 🙂

Sandra Whitmore

This is such a complete list of products. Amazing. Many years ago when traveling in Italy with another couple, they both were attacked on separate days. By luck, we were not, but I certainly invested in a few anti-pickpocket products that I still use.

Coni

This is so clever! We should always have something to deter pick-pocketers. Most will not be “hunting” for a victim, but just acting if they see the opportunity, like a phone being carried in the pants’ back pocket. I also love the advice on keeping an emergency stash somewhere unusual. Not even if the robber has all the time in the world to look for money, they’ll look in a deodorant case 🙂

MagicandBliss

Clever stuff! Thanks for sharing these. Will look into buying if I can find in the region where I live.

william rose

Anne, it is a quality blog. I travel a lot more, and this blog is complete. You write for me just like something advising your loved one.

Linda

To consider in hidden pocket clothing, I recently saw Tuck Top multi-pocket t-shirts at a local craft fair. I bought one and it is very comfortable. I’m looking forward to using it for travel. They are online at TuckTop.ca.

Lin

I found about them from your reply and bought one. I wore it at work with my pocketless pants, and they were perfect! Can’t wait to take it on my next trip. It’s very comfortable (though snug).

Jon D. Kelley

As a man, I tend to travel lighter – and as prior military personnel (who essentially lived out of his duffel bag for six years,) I can travel very light, indeed. (I went to New Zealand for a month completely with carry-on – one laptop bag and a medium backpack.)

One habit I stuck with after I got out was to wear BDU pants – the hip and thigh pockets have button flaps. If I don’t put my wallet in my left front pocket (in my left hand, for high-risk areas,) I keep it in my left hip pocket, with the flap buttoned. And I keep a dummy wallet in my right pocket, also buttoned in, just to confuse pickpockets. The loose fit of the BDUs and the internal bag pockets (as opposed to the patch pockets on blue jeans) help to conceal the contours of the wallet(s) anyhow.

That’s not necessarily 100%, but paying close attention to the signals of your body and your intuition will often pay off. In Chicago on the El, the car was filing up, I stood up to give an old man my seat (before I became disabled myself,) and I became a straphanger. Some sketcy fella grabbed the strap behind me – all sensors went on as an alarm went off in my head. I squelched the alarm (it would distract me from the sensors,) and waited.

I felt just the slightest tug at my right hip pocket (wrong side, pal…) so I whipped my right hand back and grabbed him by the wrist. Then twisted his arm as I turned around to face him. “You have one /and/ /only/ /one/ opportunity to get out of this without injury. What were you doing with my pocket?” He didn’t answer, and that wasn’t acceptable. So, I dislocated his shouder for him.

Oddly, I didn’t have any more trouble over the following three days I was in Chicago…

  • Inspiration Behind Our Travel Clothing

passport travel pants

Travel Pants Meets Money-belts: Pick-Pocket Proof® Travel Pants are a true travel revolution and the result of years of travel knowledge and a first hand experience at the hands of a pick-pocket.

Best described as, "gear masquerading as a pair of pants," our apparel represents the future of travel and the fusion of travel pants with the security of money-belts. First, we start off with an incredible pair of pants. Then build in the functionality and security of 4 money-belts right at your fingertips! Imagine no longer having to dig into your waist or pull your valuables out of your shirt. Pick-Pocket Proof® Travel Pants literally puts security back in the hands of the traveler and lets you choose one, two or even three layers of protection between your wallet and the world!

First, zip the zipper to seal the pocket. Then secure the button flap for twice the protection. For even more security, lock what's most valuable in the triple secure hidden passport pocket. Pick-pockets are looking for an easy target and in our Pick-Pocket Proof® Travel Clothing, they'll have to find another victim & you'll be free to enjoy the beauty of the world around you!

Our [travel] pants are designed to be worn every day - whether at home or abroad. Working directly with one of the worlds largest nylon manufacturers, our designers were able to create an innovative fabric that mimics the wearability found in traditional cotton material. We are proud to offer 100% Nature-Like™ Nylon on both our Adventure Traveler & Business Traveler Lines.

Just as we have revolutionized what you expect from pockets on past releases, our new generation of Pick-Pocket Proof Pants® will redefine what you'll come to expect from quick-dry travel wear. Our Nature-Like™ Nylon travel pants offer the look and feel of Cotton (breathable, comfortable, moisture wicking), with all the benefits of Nylon (lightweight, wrinkle resistant, quick-dry, durable). Rated at UPF 50+, they also provide incredible protection from the sun.

We then take it a step further to make sure that our pants are everything a travel garment should be: Wrinkle, Rain & Stain Resistant™! A Durable Water Repellent (DWR) & Stain Resistant finish is added directly into the fiber of our fabric prior to weaving. This increases the longevity of the pants, lowers drying time & makes them easier to care for! Spilled drinks will roll right off the pants and stains will have less of an effect on the material.

Pick-pocketing is a major problem in Xian and signs reading "Beware of Pick Pockets" are all around - but you never think its going to happen to you! We were attacked by a team from behind and luckily noticed something was happening just in time to see them disappear in the crowded mass behind us.

Personally, we hate carrying money-belts. They are uncomfortable, unwieldy and inefficient but a necessity for a traveler - until now! Pick-Pocket Proof® Travel Clothing allows you to select your level of security based on your surroundings. Perhaps you're not worried about a pick-pocket walking in down your street at home but when you're about to enter the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul or infamous Chunking Mansions in Hong Kong, you'll never again think about travel security the same way with a double or triple secured pocket!

As travelers, we know that everyone has a unique travel style. So we've modeled our innovative Pick-Pocket Proof® family after your own! Each traveler has an individual destination and unique way of getting there - we offer two types of fabric in travel friendly colors geared toward the Casual - Business Traveler and the Adventure Traveler.

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

Now that the coldest months of the year are behind us, I, like many travel lovers, am ready to come out of hibernation and start planning some warm-weather trips. On a particularly warm day lately, I excitedly brought my summer fits out of storage — of course, spring weather is always changing, and I didn’t get to wear them for long! Fortunately, there are tons of versatile travel pants on the market that are perfect for nippy spring days and keep their cool well into the summer. To make things even better, Amazon’s Big Spring Sale is on right now, with discounts over 50 percent off on top-rated travel gear .

As an outdoor gear specialist, I pride myself on digging up the best deals on travel clothing that will make the most of your precious luggage space. From joggers that effortlessly walk the line between athletic clothing and casual pants to some of the coziest leggings on the market, these picks are must-haves for travelers. Want to stay comfortable and stylish, all while saving room in your suitcase for souvenirs? Keep scrolling for the very best travel pants deals of Amazon’s Big Spring Sale.

Libin Women's Cargo Joggers

When I can’t decide what to wear on dense travel days, I reach for a pair of joggers just like this one. These jack-of-all-trades bottoms boast UPF 50 sun protection, a water-resistant coating, and five convenient pockets with zippers and snaps. That’s perfect for a day on the trail; lightweight, stretchy fabric makes them equally suited to catching trains or strolling around town. As a person with a closet full of similarly-colored outdoor gear, I also love that these joggers come in 13 easily styled colors to personalize your fit.

Anrabess Women's Linen Pants

When I’m on the go and the weather is beautiful, I gravitate toward linen — it never goes out of style. Lightweight and naturally moisture-wicking, it’s the perfect fabric for summer adventures, and this pair of linen pants is up for the job. Wide-leg pants are wonderful on breezy days, and they’re plenty stylish, too. A long drawstring keeps them secure as you explore and adds a fun detail to this classic look. Make sure to grab what will surely be your favorite summer pants now while they’re over 40 percent off.

Skechers Women's Go Walk Pant

Another pair of pants that defy definition, these comfortable all-rounders are a must for travelers looking to balance the feel of leggings with the functionality of pants. With a hefty number of perfect five-star reviews, this pair is a clear favorite. I talk a lot about pockets; they’re practically a non-negotiable for me. Thankfully, this pair has four in total, plus moisture-wicking fabric and a UPF 40 sun protection rating. A classic pair of leggings is a wardrobe staple, but I love the slight flare in the legs on this pair that gives them a unique touch. If you’re looking at a long flight or train journey in your upcoming travels, the specialized flatlock seams on this pair make them more than worth it, minimizing chafing and irritation when you’re squeezed into a seat for hours.

Colorfulkoala Women's High Waisted 7/8 Length Leggings

With a whopping 37,000 five-star reviews, it’s an understatement to say that these leggings are a fan favorite. Customers rave about their buttery-soft fabric, roomy pockets, and confidence-inspiring waistband, all of which make this pair a perfect match for any globetrotter. I love to throw a pair of leggings into my bag whenever I’m on the go — I’m a big advocate of rolling clothes instead of folding them to squeeze extra room out of a suitcase, and I’ve always found that leggings like these pack down impressively small. Of course, you’ll only need to worry about packing these leggings if you can muster the strength to take them off, and with this pair’s ultra-soft fabric and wide, comfy waistband, that may never be an issue.

UEU Women's Casual Lounge Pants

These flowy, lightweight lounge pants are another no-brainer for any traveler. I love this pair’s wide-leg silhouette — it gives you plenty of room to move, but can easily be dressed up when the occasion arises. Impressed by their versatility, one five-star reviewer wrote, “I literally went from lounging around the house all afternoon in them to simply adding a cute sweater and heading out to dinner.” For travelers looking to create a flexible capsule wardrobe , a pair of pants like this that are stylish but functional goes a long way. To sweeten the deal, this pair is a steal at 53 percent off at Amazon.

The Gym People Women's Joggers

These joggers are right in the sweet spot for travel, riding the line between pants and leggings. Sometimes, I feel sportier than I’d like when I wear athletic-looking joggers or leggings abroad, so this sleek pair is a perfect compromise for me. I’m definitely not the only one with this take, since this pair boasts over 15,000 five-star reviews. Shoppers say the super-soft fabric is great for practically any occasion, and their flattering cut doesn’t hurt, either. In particular, I appreciate this pair’s wide, stretchy waistband, which keeps them comfortable for all-day wear.

Eddie Bauer Women's Rainier Pant

I’ve always loved Eddie Bauer’s stylish, functional outdoor apparel, and these pants are another stellar offering from the brand. Lightweight, quick-drying fabrics are so important for long-term travel when laundry becomes an issue — in many places, dryers aren’t readily available, and no one wants to wait hours for thick cotton pants to slowly drip dry. These pants get you back to the fun parts of your trip fast, and they also protect you from the elements with a high-quality durable water resistant coating and UPF 50 sun protection. Best of all, Eddie Bauer uses Bluesign-certified fabrics in these pants, meaning that they’re a sustainable choice. Oh, and they’re 30 percent off, too.

Outdoor Ventures Women's Rain Pants

These waterproof rain pants are about as packable as it gets — in fact, they come with a convenient storage bag to make them the ultimate rough-weather travel addition. When I’m traveling, I want to see the sights rain or shine, and at the cost of a tiny corner of my suitcase, these lightweight rainpants are completely worth it. This pair isn’t just water- and wind-proof — they’re also plenty breathable, thanks to specially engineered fabric that keeps you from getting clammy. Of course, you’re not going to want to wear rain pants all day; that’s why this pair sports two half-leg zippers so they’re easy to put on and take off without removing your shoes.

Lee Men's Extreme Motion Pant

These pants look solidly dressy, but looks can be deceiving — because of their cotton/spandex blend and flex waistband, these pants allow tons of movement, all in a stylish package. Lee markets these pants as the pair for any occasion, and customers agree. One satisfied five-star reviewer wrote, “Whether I'm sitting at my desk or running errands around town, these pants move with me effortlessly,” and added that they still manage to look professional enough for work meetings. Two particularly adaptable colorways — navy and painter grey — are marked down 59 percent right now, so grab this pair while you can.

Amazon Essentials Men's Performance Stretch Knit Jogger Pant

If maximizing comfort is your game, these joggers are the way to go. I’ve been spending a ton of time on the road lately, and though I tried to fight it, I realized a pair of deeply comfortable, stretchy pants are unbeatable for travel. Four-way stretch fabric allows these pants to easily move and flex with you — of course, for me, that means curled up in a hotel room after hours behind the wheel. Luckily, this pair’s soft knit fabric is excellent for lounging. When you eventually decide to brave the outside world, an interior drawcord and moisture-wicking finish will keep you (literally) high and dry.

ATG by Wrangler Men's Convertible Trail Jogger

I don’t know if these pants from Wrangler’s outdoor apparel line are joggers, hiking pants, or casual slacks — frankly, I think it’s all of the above. What I can say is that they’re a heck of a deal for a pair that covers so many bases. An integrated belt and ankle drawcords makes these pants some of the most adjustable I’ve ever seen. I love joggers, but sometimes a wider leg is great for shedding heat, and with these pants, you don’t have to choose. They’re also packed with other important features like UPF 30 sun protection, zipper pockets, and my favorite, vented knees for keeping cool on active days. Somehow, despite all their technical details, these pants still look great. Even better, they’re currently 40 percent off on Amazon.

Sailwind Men's Drawstring Linen Pants

Ditching the typical flowy shape of linen pants in favor of a modern straight cut, these pants put the comfort of linen into a casual package. Perfect for the beach, a dinner date, or anywhere in between, these pants are light, airy, and as comfortable as it gets. The shape of these pants makes them incredibly versatile for trips abroad — linen pants are bound to have a beachy look, but because of their slim, flattering legs, these pants could also easily pass as far dressier. If you plan to head anywhere warm this summer, I would definitely add this pair to the shopping cart.

Unionbay Men's Rainier Travel Tech Chino Pants

Another pair of shapeshifters for the list, these pants are styled to look like classic chinos, but under the surface, they’re high-performance hiking pants. Durable, stretchy nylon helps them stand up to the rigors of travel, all while staying soft and breathable. Water-repellent and with a UPF 50 rating, these super-light, super-packable pants are a jet-setter's dream. This pair’s mesh-lined side pockets are a particularly nice touch — it’s easy to get warm when you’re walking big miles like is common in European cities, so ventilation in the pockets goes a long way. Beyond their stellar features, these chino/hiking pant chameleons are on sale for over 50 percent off, making them an easy choice for savvy shoppers.

Columbia Men's Narrows Pointe Pant

These streamlined hiking pants are another instant travel favorite. Columbia is well-known in the outdoor world for their high-quality apparel and gear, and these pants are no exception. Utilizing the brand’s special Omni-shield and Omni-shade technology, this pair sheds rain, dries quickly, and protects from harmful UV rays. Even better, though, these pants are so casual, you’d hardly know they were hiking pants. Two side pockets and one zippered thigh pocket give them enough utility to be perfect for any travel destination, and with their laid-back cut, no one will bat an eye if you wear them for dressier occasions.

Frogg Toggs Men's Classic Pro Rain Pant

They may not win you any fashion competitions, but if you’re heading somewhere rainy and want a pair of waterproof pants on standby, these are the way to go. On a two-week hike that rapidly turned into a two-week wade through ankle-deep water after nonstop thunderstorms, these pants kept me shockingly dry, and I’ve recommended them ever since. Rain pants aren’t always a necessity, but when they come in handy, they really come in handy — this pair is so lightweight and packable, I love to keep them in my bag for peace of mind, especially while they’re on sale for $20.

You will likely read at various government and other "serious, authoritative" sites that you should indeed have your original passport on you at all times...

I am of quite the contrarian view, and believe the conservative view is a vestige of previous, "Cold War" thinking (as in, the repressive state out to get you), OR cops looking to hassle you for bribes.

While cops May indeed pay more attention to some folks, the targets are NOT tourists, but rather folks they suspect might be "illegal migrants".

If you have a copy of your passport, in the rare event you are asked for it, advise the original is safely locked up back at your hotel, you should be fine. The alternative is to risk losing your original (perhaps due to pickpockets, thieves - same as any large city, NOT unique to Russia). If you lose your original passport with visa, you will be faced with WAY more hassle and expense to replace it.

I am sure others will chime in here...but quite sure almost all will say they were never stopped and asked for this. Note that if you choose to do something like buy a train ticket at the station, or travel on a train, you will need your original passport.

passport travel pants

I agree with the copy if your hotel can lock up the original Passport for you? I take a small flat hip pouch with me at all times when I travel. This is the kind that your belt loops go through. Very hard for a pick pocket to get into mine. I put everything into it including wallet. And as it is under a coat most of the time, know one even knows it's there. Also keep a copy of your P P in a coat pocket, a suit case & such. This would make things much more easy if you were to miss place the original and have to make a trip to the American embassy for a new temporary P P. AIM.

Thanks for that, will take your advice. Hope not to get knocked down.

Thanks for the advice

I went around the city with a 'proof of stay' the hotel gave me upon arrival. They took care of my passport for the rest of the stay. The police will usually leave tourists alone (they don't want a diplomatic incident, do they?). However, they do look out for illegal migrants as Ebertsj mentioned. If you are 'unfortunate' to look like one of those, it is best to at least hold a copy of the pasport with you.

Tobias S... that sounds like a good idea, thank you

Note that the proof of stay I believe a copy of the registration the hotel is required to file with the Migration Services. The last few times I have been over the hotel I frequent has not routinely given me a copy, and the last time when I needed this go my own purposes, only got this 2 days into my stay.

The bottom line is you should not even need this, but for sure, leave your passport safely back a hotel...

Passport control and getting into Moscow

FWIW We arrived in Moscow yesterday and it took 90 minutes to get through passport control. We had booked a car into the hotel; train would have been better and cheaper but we are old and have too much luggage to do this. Just one medium suitcase each and heavy messenger bags with the electronics and a camera bag for me; for ten weeks two climates. The car took two hours to get to our hotel; the traffic was incredible -- a parking lot coming into town. So we landed at 1:30 and didn't get to the hotel till neary 5.

We were in St. Petersburg a year ago. Getting through passport control is not much fun--with big, stern Russian lady customs agents controlling the lines. Russia just doesn't have many controlled access highways. St. Pete was like pedestrian vs. traffic--dangerous place to walk with many aggressive drivers and few 4 lane highways. I can see where Moscow traffic could be a nightmare. Have a great trip.

We went through immigration and customs in St. Petersburg Pulkovo Airport and it was a breeze. Nothing compared to Seattle. But traffic in Moscow was horrendous. Traffic jam in Seattle is nothing. I was in Moscow before, in 1983 when it was under iron fist of Andropov. Those enormously wide boulevards were then almost empty. Few government limousines, trucks and trolleybuses. I never imagined that those boulevards would ever get filled. Thank God for their Metro although stations are far apart and you have to walk a lot but still faster than a car.

We got through Passport Control in St. Petersburg fairly quickly last year -- nothing like Moscow yesterday. But the people ahead of us, a couple of young men, tied up the line for about 20 minutes when first the agent spent a lot of time with them, then men in uniforms were summoned, then men in different uniforms were summoned and then a couple of guys in suits were summoned and the two young men were hauled off somewhere. Officious uniformed woman assigning lines would not allow us to change to one of the many other lines going quickly.

Are you flying out of DME airport? If so, train to the airport is rather fast and has lots of room for luggage. Perhaps you could cab from your hotel to the train station. We took the metro to the train station- not recommended with lots of luggage- many transfers and steps. Moscow traffic is horrible

We are flying out of Petersburg later this week and will arrange transport with the hotel -- I recall it being easy last year -- we will see. I would definitely take the train in Moscow even with luggage -- the traffic is horrendous and our two hour trip in convinced me not to risk that on exit if taking a plane from there.
