Karan and Mallika

Mallika & i can’t thank the team enough for the most beautiful vacation/honeymoon we have had. firstly, all the hotels were fabulous and we enjoyed our stay in each city (rome & como took the cake thanks to the upgrade provided by you). secondly, the entire itinerary was brilliantly thought through and once we were there we figured how amazing and well planned it was. we had all the maps, directions and details shared by you which made it extremely simple. thirdly, the tours and sightseeing were all worth it and we loved being a part of them. fourthly, thank you for giving us the opportunity of driving around to places which left us with memorable experiences through our drive. last but not the least, we have returned as relaxed souls filled with tonnes of memories & happiness; and with the zest to travel more. thank you for everything ♥️ lots of love, mallika & karan.

Travel N Living

What is luxury travel?

Words like "curated", "experiential", "artisanal" have filled up websites, blogs & press releases describing the essence of luxury travel. What we are here to tell you, is - “ simplicity” is the truest form of luxury. True luxury is slowing down - a moment of decompression when you see a phenomenal view, feeling completely unburdened. We tend to talk about luxury travel, adventure, family... all these different travel niches. When it comes down to it though, it's the transformative nature of travel that is the single biggest motivator. Luxury to discerning travelers today is, camping in New Zealand under the moon lit skies, touching the tip of Patagonia, disconnecting with the world to connect with nature in bushes of Africa, dancing under the Auroras in Iceland. Luxury is attaining that satisfaction of exploring the unexplored. There are trips that fit on a sheet of paper. Then there are experiences that go beyond the power of words.

Why seek the assistance of a travel advisor?

Travel advisors are now information navigators and matchmakers, pairing people with experiences. An expert won’t just give you the right answer of which place may be better, but which is better for the traveler in question. Computers do not have the ability to dig beyond the surface We want to change the way people explore the world, the way they perceive travel or luxury travel. We are here to emphasis on the importance of experiences vs possessions. Our leading travel expert has experience in areas ranging from family travel, adventure travel, experiential travel, unique hotel experiences, cruises and travel rewards. The reality is the travel advisor is not a thing of the past, but rather the gateway to unique and rewarding future travel experience. We have the ability to give you an experience that takes you beyond the map and, in the ride of the five senses, carry you beyond the reality you know!

YOU’RE NOT CRAZY

I’m perfectly aware that many people you know probably think you’re crazy for wanting to travel instead of settling into a typical 9-5 lifestyle.

It’s difficult for others to understand your goals.

Well, I certainly don’t think you’re crazy, nor do the thousands of other people out here in the world who are already living their own life of travel.

In fact, every traveler I know would agree that you’re only crazy if you decide NOT to go after your goals in life.

Luckily, the choice is yours to make, and if you’re already reading this, I believe you’ve already made the decision.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Is there any catch? No catch. I’ve worked hard to build this blog and there is no way I would jeopardize the community that’s been created by offering a product that didn’t offer exactly what it promised.

Does this material only apply to North Americans? Not at all. This guide applies to everyone, no matter what country you live in. Some information may be easier for certain nationalities to utilize but every person who reads this guide will benefit.

Am I too young or too old for this guide? There’s no such thing. Whether you’re in high school, university, your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s or any age whatsoever, as long as you have a strong desire to achieve your travel goals, this material is designed for you.

Is there a guarantee? After reading the guide, if you feel it’s not for you, just send me an email within 60 days and I’ll issue you an immediate refund. My goal is to help you travel. If I can’t do that, I honestly don’t want to keep your money.

What does a ‘life of travel’ actually mean? It simply refers to a lifestyle that involves as much travel as you wish. A few months of backpacking, a one year round-the-world trip, a decade of nomadic wandering…whatever you want, that’s what it means!

Can I contact you with questions? Absolutely! By purchasing this guide, you will have proven that you’re serious about travel and as a result, I’m serious about helping you in any way possible. In fact, once you have a read of the material, I encourage you to email me with any questions you may have.

travel and living

IF I CAN DO IT…

I started traveling back in 1999, shortly after graduating from university. My plan was to backpack around Southeast Asia for three months and then return to the US to become a Sports Agent. However, just one week into that trip, while celebrating the Millennium at the amazing Angkor Wat temple in the jungles of Cambodia (go there if you haven’t already been!), I realized that three months of travel simply wasn’t enough.

The only problem was that I had less than $1500 to my name.

Fast forward to today… Over the past 15 years, I have discovered, and taken advantage of, endless opportunities that have allowed me to continuously live, travel, study, volunteer and earn money in over 85 countries around the world. And I’m still going strong, with no desire to stop any time soon.

The point is, if I can make it happen with $1500 and no idea what I was doing, you can make it happen as well.

And with the knowledge and experience that I’m about to pass on to you in this guide…you’re going to have a much easier path ahead than I ever did!

If you are constantly day-dreaming about travel and wondering how you can possibly achieve all of your travel goals during this lifetime, I just want to repeat that everything you’re dreaming about really can be achieved.

It will take some hard work and determination for sure, plenty of it, but at the end of the day, when you find yourself living or traveling or working overseas, enjoying rewarding experiences, you’ll be incredibly thankful that you decided to pursue a life of travel.

And I honestly can’t wait to meet up with you in some foreign land where we can swap travel stories over a beer or coffee or tea!

Remember, you don’t have to take my word for it. You can try out the guide risk-free and see for yourself if it gets you any closer to the life of travel that you want. (I’m quite confident it will!)

Kind regards, Derek

13 budget-friendly places where couples can retire abroad and live on as little as $1,500/month

thumbnail

Retiring in the U.S. can be expensive. In Florida, often the favorite state of the nation's retirees, settling down to enjoy your golden years can cost as much as $58,396 a year .

That's one reason why many Americans choose to leave the States and retire abroad . Nearly 450,000 people received their Social Security checks outside the U.S. at the end of 2021, up from 307,000 in 2008, according to a 2023 report from the Wall Street Journal .

But not all international retirement destinations are created equal, especially if you're on a budget. Last month, International Living released its list of the 13 destinations where a couple can retire for as little as $1,500 a month.

International Living used the following seven categories to determine the best locations out of over 200 countries in the world:

  • Visas and benefits
  • Cost of living
  • Affinity rating
  • Health care
  • Development and governance

In addition to taking those factors into consideration, International Living also looked at the availability of high-speed internet, networking opportunities and English-speaking locals or service providers in each country.

While the cities and towns are spread across the globe, some countries are especially affordable for retirees. Mexico had the most cities on the list, and five destinations were in Southeast Asia.

Top affordable retirement destinations in the Americas

  • Querétaro, Mexico
  • Isla Mujeres, Mexico
  • Cozumel, Mexico
  • Armenia, Colombia
  • Arenal, Costa Rica

Querétaro, Mexico, was one of the three South American cities included on International Living's list.

It is located in north-central Mexico, just over two hours from Mexico City. The local airport also offers direct flights to several hubs in the U.S., including Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston and Chicago.

Querétaro offers a mild climate and various warehouse store shopping options, such as Costco and Sam's Club.

The estimated monthly costs for a single person in Querétaro are $744.50 before rent, according to Numbeo .

In Querétaro, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment is 10,571.43 MXN or about $633. The average rent for the same apartment size in retirement hotspot Florida is $1,236, according to Zillow .

Top affordable retirement destinations in Asia

  • Penang, Malaysia
  • Chiang Mai, Thailand
  • Phnom Penh, Cambodia
  • Kuching, Malaysia
  • Hoi An, Vietnam

Chiang Mai, Thailand, is one of the five Southeast Asian cities listed in the International Living survey.

It is the largest city in northern Thailand, home to hundreds of Buddhist temples. It is an hour's flight from Bangkok, the country's capital.

Not including rent, a single person's estimated monthly costs are $515.50, according to Numbeo . Additionally, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center is 14,100.00฿ or about $395 per month.

Chiang Mai is home to Doi Inthanon, the highest peak in Thailand. It is known as one of the best places for birdwatching, and the park on the peak is home to over 300 species, according to Hotels.com .

Top affordable retirement destinations in Europe

  • Alicante, Spain
  • Granada, Spain
  • Bergerac, France

Granada, Spain, is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains in Andalusia and is a city full of Spanish and Moorish history.

The city is also home to the University of Granada, which has an estimated 47,000 undergraduate students spread over several campuses around the city.

It offers retirees the opportunity to embrace the more relaxed Spanish lifestyle while still being connected to the more youthful culture of living in a "college town."

A single person's estimated monthly costs are $771.30 before rent in Granada, Numbeo states.

Renting a one-bedroom apartment in the city center costs an average of 583.33€ a month, or around $637. That's still about $677 less than the average rent price for an apartment in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, one of the best places to retire in the U.S. , according to U.S. News and World Report .

Conversions to USD were done on March 15, 2024, using OANDA conversion rates of 1 euro to 1.09 USD, 1 Thai Baht to 0.02 USD, and 1 Mexican Peso to 0.05 USD. All amounts are rounded to the nearest dollar.

Is it safe to travel to Haiti right now? What travelers should know

travel and living

The State Department is urging Americans not to travel to Haiti amid fresh gang violence in the country, which declared a state of emergency last week.

While neither the warnings nor violence are entirely new – Haiti has been a Level 4: Do Not Travel destination in State Department travel advisories since before the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse – a spate of recent high-profile attacks, including an attempt by armed gangs to seize control of the country’s main international airport, has sparked renewed urgency.

“The current security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” the U.S. Embassy in Haiti said in a security alert issued Sunday. “We are aware that there are few or no commercial options to depart Haiti safely at this time. As they become available, we urge U.S. citizens to take advantage of them. The U.S. Embassy’s ability to assist U.S. citizens is severely limited.”

The U.S. military stepped in to airlift American personnel “into and out of the Embassy” to augment security, U.S. Southern Command said Sunday in a statement to USA TODAY. Meanwhile, U.S. citizens in Haiti can fill out crisis intake forms and enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program program for updates.

Here’s what airlines and cruise lines are doing about trips to Haiti:

Three U.S. airlines typically operate direct flights to Haiti: American, JetBlue and Spirit. However, all three have temporarily suspended service and issued travel waivers for the Caribbean destination.

◾ American Airlines customers with flights scheduled to, through, or from Port-au-Prince (PAP) through March 25 may modify flights without paying change fees. Changes must be made by March 25 with the same origin and destination cities as the original booking.

◾ JetBlue Airways is waiving change and cancellation fees for travelers with flights scheduled to and from Port-au-Prince through April 15. Changes can be made through April 30.

◾ Spirit Airlines is waiving change fees and fare differences on travel to, from, or through Cap Haitien (CAP) and Port-au-Prince through April 15. Travelers should rebook by April 30. After that, the airline said change fees would still be waived, but fare differences may apply.

Do cruise ships still go to Haiti?

Royal Caribbean and its sister line Celebrity Cruises normally sail to Labadee, Haiti , a private destination roughly six hours away from Port-au-Prince by car. However Royal Caribbean is skipping several previously scheduled stops, in coming days.

The following sailings will not go to Labadee.

  • Adventure of the Seas – 3/15 sailing
  • Mariner of the Seas – 3/16 sailing
  • Explorer of the Seas – 3/17 sailing
  • Oasis of the Seas – 3/17 sailing
  • Symphony of the Seas – 3/17 sailing
  • Grandeur of the Seas – 3/18 sailing

"The safety and security of our guests, crew, and communities we visit are our top priority," a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement to USA TODAY. "Our Global Security and Intel Team is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we are temporarily making adjustments to sailings visiting Labadee. We will continue to monitor and reassess calls as needed, and will communicate updates with guests directly."

As recently as Monday, the cruise line had not canceled any sailings to Labadee, but was keeping a close on the situation while noting that it had private security in the area, which was closed to the public.

It doesn’t look like any Celebrity cruises are scheduled there until fall.

Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn hates the cold. Now, she's happily living in Miami.

  • Lindsey Vonn may be an Olympic skier, but she actually hates cold weather.
  • Vonn told Business Insider she moved to Miami for the sunshine and couldn't be happier.
  • The world-class athlete retired in 2019. Now, she's making waves in the corporate world.

Insider Today

Lindsey Vonn will forever be known as one of the most famous ski racers in the world — but that doesn't mean she has to live in the cold.

The Olympian — who started skiing at the age of 3 in Minnesota — now calls Miami home . And she couldn't be happier.

"I really don't like the cold at all," Vonn told Business Insider on the red carpet during Time's "Women of the Year" gala in Los Angeles on March 5. "I think sometimes I might be a little too hot in Miami, but I would much rather be hot than too cold."

Vonn currently lives in a $10.5 million waterfront home in Miami Beach that she bought in August 2023, according to The Real Deal .

"I like being in my swimsuit, playing with my dogs in the water. They love it," she told BI. "My dog Leo and I are both getting old. Our joints hurt, so being in the warm weather is very helpful."

And Vonn isn't alone. Wealthy Americans, including billionaires such as Jeff Bezos and Carl Icahn, are flocking to Florida for warmer weather, bigger homes, and lower taxes. Citadel founder Ken Griffin even moved the company's headquarters from Chicago to Miami, and he purchased a nearly $107 million waterfront property in the city.

Vonn, who retired from alpine ski racing in 2019, is now focused on entrepreneurship. She's an investor in Angel City FC , the National Women's Soccer League team in Los Angeles, as well as the fitness companies Hyperice and Tempo, according to Fortune . She's also been a brand ambassador for Red Bull and Under Armour for 20 years and has her own production company, Après Productions

The slopes might be different from the corporate world, but Vonn told BI the transition hasn't been difficult.

"It's very similar dynamics," Vonn said. "When I was racing, I was negotiating a fair amount of my own contracts. I really tried to make partnerships, and I built a lot of great relationships over time."

"The corporate world is very similar," she added. "It's about building those connections with people. When I look to do business, I'm looking at the CEO and who they are as a person and how they're going to lead the company. I've found some really incredible leaders that I admire and respect, and those are the kinds of people that I want to keep close and learn from. Hopefully, that helps me in this next chapter."

Vonn is also setting her sights on the upcoming summer Olympics — this time as a fan.

"I'm excited for everything," Vonn said. "I think having the Olympics in Paris is going to be truly incredible. You have events overlooking the Eiffel Tower. You have the opening ceremonies on the Seine."

"And, obviously, Simone Biles," she added. "I think it's going to be truly spectacular."

No family visits, weekend barbecues or non-essential travel. Australians reveal cost-of-living isolation

Back view of a women in silhouette, looking out of a window at green garden.

Lindy Kay used to enjoy a meal at the bowling club once a week and would often meet up with girlfriends in town for morning tea.

But nowadays the 74-year-old has more or less stopped going out altogether.

"I don't go anywhere," Ms Kay told the ABC.

"Netflix is my best friend … at $11 a month that's my antisocial entertainment."

Ms Kay lives alone on a property in regional NSW with the closest town at least an hour's drive away.

Due to cost-of-living pressures, she only leaves the house for essentials and goes long stretches of time without social interactions.

"I don't go to the movies, I don't go out for dinner, I don't go to the pub," Ms Kay said.

"I used to love going out ... I've had to get used to isolation."

Reading through public submissions to the Senate committee inquiry into the cost of living, it's clear Ms Kay isn't alone in her experience.

More than 900 Australians so far have shared their stories, revealing how financial stress is forcing many to cut themselves off from friends and family.

What lengths are people taking?

The Australian Institute for Health and Wellbeing (AIHW) 2023 welfare report states that  social isolation and loneliness were concerns even before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, people say recent financial stress has left them essentially housebound, feeling like they're stuck in a type of cost-of-living lockdown.

Some mentioned that it was starting to impact their mental health.

Social isolation can harm both mental and physical health and may affect life satisfaction, according to the AIHW.

It has been linked to mental illness, emotional distress, suicide, the development of dementia and premature death.

I personally feel like a social outcast — no outings apart from the necessary. Isolation is real now.
I live alone and no longer can afford to go out and socialise so feeling a little lonely and isolated.
I'm socially isolated now as I have no money to spend on social activities.

Family visits scrapped

Many Senate committee submissions cited petrol costs as a reason for cutting back on activities.

One respondent even admitted to taking days off work because they couldn't afford to run their car.

Many say they only travel if it's necessary, and are sacrificing visiting loved ones.

People have gone years now without seeing family.

I haven't seen my family who live 800km away for 3 years as I cant afford the $300 cost of fuel.
[I] won't visit family if have to access by roads with tolls as too expensive ... Can't afford any leisure related activities ... Don't go out for recreation.
I can honestly say that my state of mind is slowly deteriorating. So sad that I can't drive to see the grandkids.
Not been able to see my granddaughter due to fuel costs. I have no social life, visiting my adult children is nearly impossible due to petrol prices. My mental health has been severely damaged.

No more inviting friends over

Social activities are being limited to the "antisocial" with people saying they are choosing to stay home and watch movies on television.

Even inviting friends over is out of the picture for many as they struggle to put food on the table for themselves.

I can't have people round to the house for a meal or afternoon tea as I can't afford the food.
I all but avoid social outings to minimise the insane cost of food and alcohol at venues. My girlfriend has done exactly the same. Our once-upon-a-time hobby of eating out on Sundays is now a cooking at home day and watching [a] movie on TV.
[Family] not seeing each other as we live remotely & it's too expensive to travel. Not having get togethers or BBQs as costs of food are too high. Alcohol is outrageously high to share.

Ending Loneliness Together CEO Michelle Lim says social isolation can lead to loneliness, which has been compared to being as deadly as smoking half a packet of cigarettes a day.

"Social isolation is very much as bad for you as loneliness," Dr Lim told the ABC.

"They are related and are bad partners in crime."

Dr Lim has been working on a social connection and cost of living survey with the networking platform Nextdoor, alongside fellow researchers at Sydney University.

Their research found that loneliness rates doubled when people started cutting back on social activities.

Loneliness rates were among the highest for those who stopped having friends around to their homes and going out for meals.

Children miss out on after-school activities

Children are also being affected as parents are forced to exclude them from extracurricular activities.

One mother spoke about the heartbreak she feels for her children.

She said they have become so used to hearing "we can't afford it" that they no longer ask about birthday parties or Christmas presents.

Our daughter is missing out on vital pre-school activities, she is not learning to swim as it is too expensive, nor is she enrolled in any other activities (except for free play groups) ... Everything has changed ... We do not drive to visit people/shops who live far away, we do not go on holidays or even weekends away.
Restricted family enjoyment time due to cost of travel. no more family holidays. restricted family celebrations. We now stay up late putting all spending into a budget and tracking where all money spent goes and will be going.
Your child never expresses an opinion on what they want for their birthday or Christmas, never asks for a birthday party?! How do you think it's affecting us...???!!!

Jackie Hallan, interim CEO at youth mental health service ReachOut, said it's not just families with children being affected, cost of living is having a "real impact" on young people.

ReachOut surveyed 1,121 people between 16 and 24 years old and found 70 per cent were stressed about their finances, up from 52 per cent in 2022.

Forty per cent had cut down on social activities, and 25 per cent had been limiting organised activities like sports.

"Connection to friends and family is such an important part of your mental health," Ms Hallan said.

"Seeing that taking a hit is a real concern."

The survey found the majority of young people experiencing financial stress were finding it was having an impact on their mental health, affecting their sleep, motivation and mood.

One in five were also taking on extra work, which Ms Hallan says contributes to the cycle of less social connection.

Experts encourage 'loud budgeting'

Dr Lim says its not surprising people are cutting out social activities as a first response to financial pressures, but even small cost-free social interactions can help improve wellbeing.

"I think we have to be very nimble in what we choose to do and how we actually get our socialisation," she said.

"Try and find free activities and be clear with friends and family that you're on a budget.

"It's actually nothing to be ashamed of because all of us are experiencing financial strain."

A woman with dark hair sits smiling in front of a bookshelf

Ms Hallan says ReachOut has been running social media campaigns that encourage "loud budgeting".

It's about being proactive and telling people you don't have a lot of money and suggesting alternative social actives that are free or more affordable, she said.

They also provide support services for young people struggling with cost-of-living pressures.

ReachOut will be making a submission to the Senate inquiry, which Ms Hallan hopes will lead to "sensible policy measures".

"It's something we really need to keep an eye on," she said.

"We definitely welcome the spotlight on this issue."

The committee is set to hand down its final report on May 31, 2024.

8 Incidents in 2 Weeks: What’s Going on With United’s Planes?

While no one was injured, most of the mishaps required emergency landings or diversions. One safety expert said the incidents were not the result of “systemic problems.”

An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap , a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway : These are among the eight incidents that have occurred over the past two weeks on flights operated by United Airlines. While no injuries — or worse — have been reported, the mishaps have generated headlines and stoked rising anxiety about aviation safety among federal officials and passengers alike.

All of the incidents happened on flights that took off from or were headed to airports in the United States, and five involved airplanes made by Boeing, a manufacturer already under intense scrutiny. In January, a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliner in mid-flight, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing.

United, one of the world’s largest airlines, flies aircraft manufactured mainly by Boeing and Airbus. In an email United began sending to customers on Monday, the company’s chief executive, Scott Kirby, wrote that while the recent incidents were unrelated, they were “reminders of the importance of safety.”

“I want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus,” he continued, adding that every case was being reviewed by the airline and would influence its safety training and procedures.

Here’s what travelers should know about the latest in airplane woes.

What exactly happened on or to the planes?

Most of the incidents reported in the last two weeks required emergency landings or diversions.

March 4: A Boeing 737-900 departing from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston returned to the airport to make an emergency landing after one of the plane engines ingested and burned plastic wrap .

March 7: A Boeing 777 leaving San Francisco for Osaka, Japan, made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport after the aircraft lost a tire .

March 8: A Boeing 737 Max 8 veered off the runway upon landing at George Bush Airport in Houston and tilted onto the grass .

Later that day, a flight leaving San Francisco for Mexico City was diverted to Los Angeles after the Airbus A320 experienced issues with its hydraulic system.

March 9: An Airbus A320 heading to Salt Lake City turned back to Chicago O’Hare International Airport after it reported maintenance issues .

March 11: A Boeing 777, flying from Sydney, Australia , to San Francisco, turned back after takeoff because the plane had a hydraulic leak.

March 14: An Airbus A320 that departed from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport had a hydraulic leak shortly before it landed in its scheduled destination, San Francisco.

Later that day, a Boeing 737-800 that took off from San Francisco landed at Rogue Valley International Medford Airport in Oregon missing an external panel .

Are the recent issues typical, or cause for concern?

The mishaps were not the result of “systemic problems,” said Robert Sumwalt, a former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board who now heads a new aviation safety center at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

“Some of these issues are things that happen occasionally, but often don’t get reported in media,” Mr. Sumwalt said, though he emphasized that none were acceptable.

Kyra Dempsey, who writes about aviation accidents in a blog called Admiral Cloudberg, said that United’s recent issues were being “falsely conflated with Boeing’s troubles.”

“While it’s bad luck that United had so many incidents in such a short period, in general such incidents happen frequently around the world and they aren’t on the rise overall,” Ms. Dempsey said.

How has United responded?

Mr. Kirby’s 270-word message to United customers, including to members of the airline’s frequent flier program, started to be sent on Monday morning, said Josh Freed, a spokesman for United.

Starting in May, United pilots will have an extra day of in-person training, a change that was already planned before the incidents, Mr. Kirby wrote. The airline will also use a “centralized training curriculum for our new hire maintenance technicians” and will dedicate additional resources to the carrier’s supply chain.

What government agencies oversee these issues, and how are they responding?

The Federal Aviation Administration regulates the country’s aviation system and investigates safety incidents on U.S. airlines, while the N.T.S.B. investigates the causes of accidents, collisions and crashes involving planes flown by U.S. carriers, in addition to other accidents involving commercial and mass transit operators. Both agencies have discretion on what they investigate, Mr. Sumwalt said.

Currently, the N.T.S.B. is investigating the incident that occurred on March 8 in Houston, when the plane veered off the runway, an agency spokesperson said. The N.T.S.B. is also looking into a Feb. 10 Los Angeles-to-Newark flight , operated by United, that experienced severe turbulence, leading to injuries among more than a dozen passengers. (The Boeing 777 landed normally, but the flight was met by medical personnel.)

Safety experts said some issues don’t necessarily rise to the level of an investigation by either agency.

For example, partial loss of some of an airplane’s multiple hydraulics systems is common, said Michael McCormick, an assistant professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a former F.A.A. control tower operator. The F.A.A. may or may not get involved for this kind of issue, unless there’s a pattern, Mr. Sumwalt said.

The January episode involving the blown door plug aboard the Alaska Airlines jet is under investigation by the N.T.S.B. and the Justice Department.

Boeing: A Company in Turmoil

Boeing is weathering a particularly difficult period: two fatal crashes, a loose panel that blew out during a flight, quality concerns and production slowdowns..

Recent Incidents : A Boeing 737-800 plane that took off on March 15 from San Francisco landed in Oregon missing an external panel . Earlier in the week, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner plane suddenly plunged on a flight to New Zealand , injuring passengers.

Alaska Airlines Flight 1282: After a section of a plane headed for Ontario, Calif., blew out  10 minutes after it took off , there was increased scrutiny  on the plane’s manufacturer: Boeing . The Justice Department has since launched a criminal investigation .

Quality Control Issues: An audit that was initiated by the Federal Aviation Administration after the Alaska Airlines incident found dozens of problems  throughout Boeing’s manufacturing process and one of its key suppliers.

Whistleblower’s Death: John Barnett, a former quality manager for the company, was found dead in Charleston  in March with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was set to testify in a lawsuit in which he accused Boeing of retaliation for his complaints about quality and safety.

At Fault: A report released in February by the Federal Aviation Administration said that Boeing’s safety culture remains flawed , despite improvements made after two fatal crashes  in 2018 and 2019.

Solving an Enduring Crisis: The Federal Aviation Administration has asked Boeing to produce an action plan  to address quality control issues. We asked experts how Boeing should try and fix its longstanding problems .
