San Diego Cruise Guide > San Diego Harbor Cruises > Navy Base Tour

San Diego Naval Base Tours

San Diego has the largest Naval Base on the west coast and is home to the Pacific Fleet. San Diego's Naval Bases are closed to visitors most of the time, but there are other ways to get a look at the Navy in this port city. An excellent option is to take a harbor cruise that tours past the naval ships. A maritime museum is also available, as well as an aircraft carrier open to visiting.

The one time of year that there are Navy base tours is during Fleet Week San Diego . Events include a Navy Open House at Naval Air Station North Island, Ship Tours at Broadway Pier, Sea & Air Parade on the San Diego bayfront, and Miramar Air Show (September 24-26, 2021).

last minute cruises from San Diego

Throughout the year, Flagship Cruises Harbor Tours take you by boat to see the Naval Base, the Pacific Fleet, the Naval Air Station, and the Sub Base. You'll get a great view of the Navy ships and operations from the water.

Hornblower Cruises Harbor Tours also take you on the water to see all the sights, including the Naval Bases.

Adventure R.I.B. Rides Naval Heritage Tours are another way to see the bases from the water. Their boats are small for a personal and fast-moving tour experience.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego offers a San Diego's Navy exhibit . It depicts 100 years of the Navy here, and includes artifacts and models.

The USS Midway aircraft carrier is the most visited naval ship museum in the world. The Midway was the longest serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century and 225,000 sailors served our country on this huge ship. Your tour includes 29 restored aircraft, and two fun flight simulators for you to try. You'll see the carrier's crew quarters, big galley, engine room, machine shops, flight control, and the bridge. The USS Midway is located on the downtown San Diego waterfront.

Navytown, USA: 12 must-visit naval sites in San Diego

As one of the largest fleet concentration areas in the world and home to the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet, San Diego’s temperate climate isn’t the only draw for tourists and transplants. The Navy snagged some of the best oceanfront real estate in America’s Finest City, but due to security measures, opportunities for the general public to access military bases nationwide are limited. For those who want to experience naval activities in San Diego that aren’t camouflaged, there are still many opportunities to say “hooyah!”

1. Perhaps the most popular Navy attraction is the USS Midway Museum , a decommissioned aircraft carrier-turned-museum that sees more than one million visitors annually. As the Navy’s longest-serving carrier of the 20th century, the USS Midway (CV 41) was in active service until 1992. Today visitors can explore 60 exhibits, see 29 restored aircraft and complete a self-guided audio tour. The museum hosts about 400 active-duty military events onboard annually, which the public is welcome to observe.

San Diego, so close yet so far from L.A.

2. Adjacent to the Midway, get in line to take a picture of the iconic 25-foot Unconditional Surrender sculpture replicating the famously photographed embrace of a sailor and nurse celebrating the end of World War II in Times Square. Nearby, the USS San Diego (CL 53) Memorial is a sculpture honoring the service and sacrifice of the World War II-era light cruiser and her crew.

3.  Fleet Week San Diego (Sept. 3 to Oct. 1, 2016) takes place annually during the fall, featuring public events like Navy ship tours, the Sea & Air Parade with Navy assets on San Diego Bay, the Coronado Speed Festival auto show and exhibition held on Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI), and the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar (MCAS Miramar) Air Show flight demonstration, among others. Fleet Week events are typically the best opportunities for the general public to visit a military installation.

4.  Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery is a military cemetery and California Historical Landmark in Point Loma, located on the grounds of a former Army artillery station. Spanning 77 acres, the cemetery holds more than 100,000 graves, including those of many notable Medal of Honor recipients. Memorial Day is one of the most popular times to visit.

5. Just past the cemetery, Cabrillo National Monument is home to the Old Point Loma Lighthouse and a statue of Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. At 422 feet above sea level, the monument is a great vantage point to see the entire military footprint in San Diego, spanning the submarine, surface ship and aviation hubs.

6. Once a Naval Training Center, Liberty Station in Point Loma opened in 1923 as a training facility for Navy recruits. After the Cold War, the Navy eventually closed the base, which was later acquired by the City of San Diego. Today, Liberty Station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is a popular shopping, arts and culinary district with much of the original Spanish Colonial Revival Style architecture still intact. The district’s layout still closely resembles a Navy base, with nods to its earlier life in many of the design elements.

7. Located within Balboa Park, the San Diego Air & Space Museum has a large collection of fully restored military aircraft from both World Wars, the Korean War and Vietnam War. While there, test-drive one of the flight simulators or take a guided tour of the museum to hear about the history of aviation.

8. Over the landmark bridge in Coronado, much of the island belongs to the Navy, including NASNI and Naval Amphibious Base (NAB) Coronado, making it a major site of naval activity. Navy SEAL candidates endure a rigorous course called Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training at NAB Coronado. Guests at Hotel del Coronado usually know when candidates make it to week four of training, also known as Hell Week, because the exercises are done on the beach near the hotel. The teamwork exercise “rock portage” is one of the most visible, where candidates simulate landing a boat on rocks, then carry the boat out of the water above their heads. A prime viewing spot, the same beach also falls along the flight line for aircraft landing at NASNI, recognized as the birthplace of naval aviation and home to the U.S. Pacific Fleet’s Naval Air Forces.

9. The 1986 blockbuster movie Top Gun is perhaps the naval aviation community’s best recruiting tool. Audiences watch Tom Cruise train at the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School at MCAS Miramar, one of many local filming locations. Known as the “Top Gun bar” downtown where several scenes were filmed, Kansas City Barbeque is where the memorable jukebox serenade takes place with Kelly McGillis. To visit the “Top Gun house” where McGillis lived in the movie, drive north to the Oceanside cottage that still stands today on an empty lot in front of Hello Betty Fish House.

10. Owned by a former Navy SEAL, McP’s Irish Pub in Coronado is a favorite off-duty hangout among the Navy community. Previous patrons include Prince Harry and his British military brethren in 2011.

11. For the best views of San Diego Bay, head to Harbor Island, Shelter Island or Coronado Ferry Landing to see ships as they transit the harbor. Typically Mondays and Fridays are the best opportunities to spot a ship in action. In years past at Naval Base San Diego, homeport to the U.S. Pacific Fleet’s Naval Surface Force, the base has opened to the public for a holiday lights open house when ships along the waterfront are aglow from bow to stern.

12. The Navy’s Marine Mammal Program is only visible by water from a few vantage points. The enclosure of dolphins and sea lions is located on Naval Base Point Loma, home to the U.S. Pacific Fleet’s Naval Submarine Force, where the mammals are trained to detect sea mines and other harmful underwater objects. Take a harbor cruise or ride a stand-up paddleboard through the channel between Liberty Station and Marine Corps Recruit Depot to get a peek of the enclosures and — just maybe — the top of a submarine.

United States Navy Commander Hank Strong Permanently Memorialized at San Diego Air & Space Museum

United States Navy Commander Henry “Hank” Strong, Jr., the Commanding Officer of Attack Squadron 212 aboard the USS Hancock who was shot down over Vietnam in May 1972, has been permanently memorialized at the San Diego Air & Space Museum with his named being added under the cockpit of the Museum’s A4 Skyhawk in the Modern Jet Age Gallery during a special ceremony on March 19.

Commander Strong’s was painted under the port side of the A4’s cockpit. Commander Frank C. Green Jr.’s name will remain on the starboard side of the A4. On July 10, 1972, Commander Green, also piloted an A-4F Skyhawk from Attack Squadron 212, on a night armed reconnaissance mission over Highway 1A in Vietnam. Commander Green’s Skyhawk went down while attacking enemy vehicles during the mission, and he was killed in the crash.

“For many Americans, the Vietnam War was one of the most critical times in their lives. More than 58,000 Americans made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam from every branch of the United States military,” said Jim Kidrick, President & CEO of the San Diego Air & Space Museum. “Men like Henry Strong and Frank Green can be counted among the finest patriots the United States has ever produced. Here at the San Diego Air & Space Museum, we are proud to salute and honor their courage, dedication to their comrades and service to our country.”

On May 25, 1972, then Cmdr. Henry H. Strong, Jr. was the pilot of the lead aircraft in a section of A4F Skyhawks that launched from the deck of the USS Hancock as part of a much greater package of aircraft conducting an evening combat strike mission against communist targets located in the densely populated and heavily defended region just southwest of Vinh, North Vietnam.

After arriving in the target area, Cmdr. Strong established contact with the airborne battlefield command and control center (ABCCC) controlling all air operations in that region. Shortly thereafter Henry Strong was given permission to commence their attack on target.

At 1830 hours, Cmdr. Strong visually acquired the target and proceeded to lead the flight into position for an attack pass. Other pilots and aircrews heard Cmdr. Strong transmit “Rolling in.” After the attack commenced, the Skyhawks came under heavy enemy anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) fire. Other pilots operating in the same sector observed an “unidentified aircraft roll inverted and go nose down at an altitude and velocity that could have precluded the pilot from surviving.”

The Douglas A4 Skyhawk was the US Navy’s single-seat light attack jet. It was the only carrier-based aircraft that did not have folding wings as well as the only one that required a ladder for the pilot to enter/exit the cockpit.

Originally from North Wales, Pennsylvania, Strong was 39 when he passed. His remains have not been returned from Vietnam.

Art of the City: Two City Heights women are helping local creatives fulfill their artistic potential

Noun Abdelaziz, left, and Fatuma “Uma” Fadhil of Abundance of Youth (AOY).

Noun Abdelaziz and Fatuma “Uma” Fadhil hope their Abundance of Youth collective will offer a seat at the table to San Diegans in underserved communities

Speaking with Noun Abdelaziz and Fatuma “Uma” Fadhil, one can’t help but walk away feeling inspired. The artists behind Abundance of Youth (AOY), a collective and community-based project in City Heights, are something of the perfect combination of both dreaming and doing.

“Personally, I was always the type of artist who has been backstage, so for me, the immediate first connection to AOY was this idea of having a platform,” explained Fadhil, who has a lifelong passion for photography and publishing. “Not only just for me, but for anyone who had that passion, but who had no platform, outlet or connections. There are people here who are creating who just need someone to believe in them.”

The mindset behind AOY is relatively simple. As they put it, “there’s abundance in collective creativity” and “when there is no space, make space.” To put it another way, when Abdelaziz and Fadhil attended an art event together in 2021, they couldn’t help but think there was a way to make the event bigger and, more importantly, more inclusive. They weren’t gallery owners, nor were they particularly entrenched in the often gate-kept modern art scene. They were simply two college students in their early 20s with a simple, albeit broad, idea: We should do something like this.

“We were taking it all in, looking at the art, and then when we were outside talking about how inspiring it was that all these people showed up just for this one artist,” Abdelaziz recalls. “It’s like we both had this vision. What if we replicate this, but for more creatives, not just one. Bring out the community for all creatives who deserve to be showcased and witnessed for the work that they do no matter how large or small a platform they have.”

People read a wall display at an Abundance of Youth event at UC San Diego

They came up with the AOY name on the spot while looking at the crowd gathered outside. And while the two had a sense that they wanted to curate and coordinate group shows that featured underrepresented artists and creatives, they also wanted to take it a step further. They wanted the organization to be something that could lend agency to artists just starting out or who had even given up trying to make a name for themselves.

“We want longevity,” says Fadhil. “While creating AOY, we didn’t want it to have that one-and-done feel where you go to an art show and you’re left with just that.”

Given their backgrounds, it’s easy to understand how the two came to form a personal and artistic bond.

Both of their families immigrated to the U.S. when they were young (Fadhil’s family from Kenya when she was an infant; Abdelaziz’s family from Sudan via Egypt when she was 10). These experiences, coupled with a history of volunteer work in the multicultural City Heights neighborhood, came to influence their own artistic practices (poetry for Abdelaziz, photography for Fadhil). Naturally, this would later come to inform the AOY mission.

“When (Fatuma) and I began to hang out one-on-one and talked about creativity, we found that we both had a very similar vision,” says Abdelaziz, who recently moved back to City Heights after completing her bachelor’s degree at UC Berkeley. “This connection was there and then we began networking together. We saw that a lot of the people we met were going through things like us; having their own build-my-brand moments when it came to their own work.”

Even while both worked diligently to complete their studies (Fadhil attended San Diego State University), they took their time crafting the AOY approach, teasing and building enthusiasm for the project on social media with posts proclaiming “AOY is coming” (“we didn’t even tell people what the acronym was for,” proclaims Abdelaziz). More than 200 people attended their first event in the summer of 2022, a mix of art, fashion and performance mostly from women and artists of color. Since then, they’ve hosted pop-up exhibitions, community events and even launched a fashion line and merchandise store.

Models walk in a fashion show.

Since that first exhibition, the two have prided themselves on a hands-on approach and on continuing to listen to the artists involved in AOY. They hold monthly meetings to hear about artists’ dream projects and then help to find the space to facilitate that vision. Both Abdelaziz and Fadhil see the value in a more democratic process when it comes to the local art scene — one in which more voices can be heard and underrepresented communities have a seat at the table.

“San Diego can be a very slow city, but it is filled with really cool people. You just have to outreach and find them,” says Abdelaziz. “I think what we wanted AOY to be, unlike other collectives, we want to find those creatives but also have their identities play a role in it.”

“In the creative scene, still, you don’t see a lot of women as the top dogs. It’s still usually men,” adds Fadhil. “It was important for us, especially during that first show, to give space for women and especially women of color and immigrants.”

This concept of equity in the arts has become something of a cause célèbre in many institutional creative structures. And while galleries, museums and arts scenes at large are seemingly doing their best to address these disparities, progress has been slow. No one will dispute, however, that change begins and is driven by those working on a grassroots level, and both Abdelaziz and Fadhil hope that organizations like AOY will help drive these changes.

A large crowd assembled for Abundance of Youth's recent presentation at UC San Diego.

“The equity part of it is really at the center of our mission,” says Abdelaziz. “To maintain a movement, you also have to represent as many people as you can, because then the loop of representation will never end. Keeping a movement alive depends on having seats at the table for everyone, because if you do, the dialogue will never end.”

The two just wrapped up an exhibition and fashion show at UC San Diego, a collaboration with the campus chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers.

Most recently, they announced an 18-month collaboration with AjA Project, a local youth-based non-profit that specializes in the documentary arts. With a grant from the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, the two plan to open a City Heights space that will offer professional development workshops for young creatives. The space will also hold exhibits, public events and serve as a “safe space to create” for City Heights youth.

“It will be every resource we’ve ever wanted to give but now just made physical,” Fadhil adds. “I have no words for it. It’s so much bigger than us and every time I think about it, it’s crazy.”

This “bigger than us” refrain is one that is repeated by both Abdelaziz and Fadhil throughout our interview. In fact, they almost never use the first-person unless asked directly about their individual lives. One gets the sense that they really do see AOY not as something altogether their own, but as an extension of a collective mindset where, when implemented with a can-do attitude, anything is possible.

Friends embrace at an art exhibit at a recent Abundance of Youth event at UC San Diego.

“It is that thing where you can be trying so hard to pursue something that you’re so passionate about and folks just quit,” says Fadhil. “But I think that what we’re trying to do is remind people of the possibilities if they do not quit. We’ve only been doing this for three years and it’s already transcended into something outside of us. Something that we never saw happening so quickly.”

When asked where they see their brainchild in five or even 10 years, they both become wide-eyed and giggly, but Abdelaziz catches herself and pivots back to their firmness of purpose.

“I think a few years from now, AOY is going to be a really monumental movement in the city of San Diego. We’re going to be a pinnacle space for a lot of people, recognized in San Diego and all over the nation.”

Fadhil smiles before adding, “I couldn’t have said it better myself.”

Noun Abdelaziz and Fatuma “Uma” Fadhil

Birthplace: Khartoum, Sudan (Abdelaziz); and Nairobi, Kenya (Fadhil)

Fun fact: Since launching Abundance of Youth sticker and clothing lines, the two have noticed branded items popping up in unexpected places. “Fatuma’s sister went to Morocco and she took a picture of an AOY sticker she randomly saw,” Abdelaziz says, laughing. “We were both like, how did AOY get to Morocco before we did? We still don’t know who put that sticker up.”
