Bordeaux Travel Logistics

Getting to bordeaux, major airports in bordeaux.

Keep a lookout for current flight deals on Kayak for the best rates.

Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS): This is one of the largest airports in France with numerous international flight connections. Though it’s about a two-hour drive to Bordeaux, the extensive connections and shuttle services to Bordeaux make it a practical option.

Nantes Atlantique Airport (NTE): Another option for entering the region, especially for those exploring the greater Bordeaux region. It’s around a three-hour drive to Bordeaux, but the airport offers a number of domestic and international flights.

Arriving from Other Parts of France

France’s high-speed train network, the TGV, makes travelling to Bordeaux from other parts of the country both swift and convenient. The Bordeaux Saint-Jean train station is a major hub that connects the city to other French cities such as Paris, Lyon, and Marseille. This connectivity, combined with the efficiency of the TGV, means you can be sipping Bordeaux’s famous wines just a few hours after leaving Paris.

Getting Around Bordeaux

Public transportation.

Trains: The train system in Bordeaux is well developed, providing reliable connections not only between major cities but also to smaller towns in the region. The trains generally run on time and provide an efficient and economical way to travel.

Buses: For some of the more remote areas or smaller villages, buses are the only available form of public transport. Though not always as punctual as the trains, buses offer routes to areas trains can’t reach.

Renting a car is a wonderful option if you’re keen to discover the picturesque countryside and visit vineyards at your leisure. Remember that non-EU citizens need an International Driving Permit along with their standard driver’s license to drive in France. Also, take note that many city centers in Bordeaux have restricted traffic zones, which are monitored by cameras. Unauthorized entry into these zones can result in fines.

7 great bordeaux wine tours: find the best tastings and vineyards.

As a wine lover, the Bordeaux wine region is an absolute must-visit destination. Located in southwestern France, Bordeaux is home to some of the most prestigious wineries in the world. And the best way to really get an overview of the region, try lots of wine, and learn as much as possible is to go on one of the top Bordeaux wine tours.

bordeaux wine tours

When we went for the first time, we were worried we wouldn’t be able to get into the top wineries and we’d have a hard time navigating the language barrier. In many ways, we were right. It wasn’t easy booking tours on our own without help. But then we found Rue des Vignerons , a website that helps you easily locate and book winery visits and more.

Not only can you book your own tours through them, you can also book a full or half day group tour in either the Right Bank or Left Bank, making it even more easy to find the best wineries and have a nice time on your trip, without having to worry about details.

We’ve been on many tours in Bordeaux and have found each of these to be very rewarding, fun, and educational. I hope you’ll find one that you love just as much as we did.

Planning a trip to Bordeaux ?

  • Easiest way to book wine tasting appointments: Rue des Vignerons (instant booking!)

You’ll start out with a tour and tasting in St. Emilion, then head to local winery for a wine tasting and picnic lunch, then it’s on to a family run estate in Medoc and a tasting session at a second winery in the Margaux region.

This tour has a small group size with a maximum of 8 people, so you’ll get nearly undivided attention from your guide who is there to answer your questions and assist you with anything you need along the way.

Bordeaux Private Full Day Wine Tour

If you have a group, this private full-day tour is definitely the way to go. The price is higher, but it’s for a group of up to 8 people, so the more you have the less it costs per person.

Or you can have your guide choose for you based on your preferences.

Our Best Bordeaux Tips

There’s a lot to think about when you’re planning your trip to Bordeaux. Here are a few things we wish we’d known before we went.

  • It’s not easy to book wine appointments directly through wineries. It’s way easier to book through Rue des Vignerons. You can also easily cancel your booking if something comes up.
  • English is not spoken everywhere, so be prepared with some key French phrases.
  • It’s best to stay in the town of Bordeaux if you don’t have a car. It’s walking distance to everything and all of these tours can depart from there.
  • If you do have a car, you might want to stay in St. Emilion. It’s so cute and easy to get around.
  • We like St. Emilion more than Medoc for the experience because it’s cuter, more laidback, and easier to visit.
  • Look for wineries that offer dinner. We had better dining experiences out in the vineyards than in town.
  • If you want to try more wines, head to one of the wine bars in Bordeaux to sample more than you could ever try at the wineries.

Bordeaux Wine Tour Questions

How much does it cost to go wine tasting in bordeaux.

Bordeaux wine tours vary in cost, but many of them are not very expensive. The most expensive tours include tastings of a variety of high-end wines as well as food and occasionally even the chance to try your hand at making wine. But, for the most part, most wine tours in France cost around $100-$160 per person for a full 8-10 hour day. Of course, this will vary depending on what is included, if it’s a private wine tour, and so forth. For private wine tours, you can expect around $200-$300 per person.

When Should I Visit Bordeaux Wineries?

The best time to visit Bordeaux wineries is between August and October, with September being peak season. Mid to late August is perfect for seeing vineyards overflowing with grapes and have warm to hot weather, while September is when the grapes are at their best and harvesting season begins. By mid-October, much of the grapes are harvested for use during the off-season, but you’ll experience far milder temperatures which is perfect for those who don’t love the summer heat.

How Do you Get Around Bordeaux Wineries?

The wineries are located within a 50-mile radius of the city. The closest vineyards are located just outside the city center and are very easy to reach. Many tour companies offer transportation to these vineyards so you don’t have to worry about driving yourself or taking public transportation (especially helpful since public transport is limited). With pre-arranged tours, you can also easily choose an accommodation that is central to the city center or in a nearby village to maximize your time spent tasting wines and visiting wineries without having to worry about long travel times.

How Many Days is Enough for Bordeaux?

You should plan on spending between 4-7 days in Bordeaux, however, there is no definitive answer to this question, as it will depend on your interests and how much time you have available. If you are simply looking for a short visit to do some wine tasting at a few wineries, a couple of days should be sufficient. However, if you want to explore the vineyards or take an immersive wine-tasting tour, you may want to stay in Bordeaux for a week or longer.

More About Bordeaux

Over 100 years ago, previous generations of our family were importing some of the finest Bordeaux to the UK. Indeed, one of our family’s old price lists from 1905 shows a Château Margaux going for a very reasonable two shillings, while a Château Citran nearly broke the bank at two shillings and sixpence! If only prices had stayed that low.

Choose from private Bordeaux wine tours, or small group Bordeaux wine tours,  browse the experiences below to choose the tour that best suits you!

Bordeaux Activities

A foodie’s paradise.

Bordeaux is known and loved throughout France as a grand bastion of fine eating and living. Be sure to pair a sampling of the local cuisine with one of our Bordeaux wine tours.

To accompany those sumptuous reds, meat-based dishes like duck-confit and Pauillac lamb are all the rage. While the region’s white wines are best served with seafood selections from the coast, like oysters from Arcachon, and the sweet wines not only a partner for desserts but also blue cheese and foie gras!

Teeming with historic & natural beauty

As well as pleasures for the stomach, Bordeaux also offers plenty of delights for the eyes. The city of Bordeaux itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as is the medieval village of Saint Emilion, with both offering plenty of opportunities for idle wandering and architectural marvelling.

Beyond the city and village gates meanwhile, the Bordeaux countryside is well tended to by the region’s maritime climate. With the benefit of the Gulf Stream and the protective, warming effect of the Gironde Estuary, it’s the perfect environment for vines and visitors alike.

Endless possibilities

As you can see, the region of Bordeaux offers endless possibilities for your wine-tasting trip. We have a range of Bordeaux wine tours available. And we can always tailor trips exactly to your tastes.

Bordeaux Wine Guide

The wines of bordeaux.

Where to start with the wines of Bordeaux? As they’re invariably made from blends of grapes, you could probably spend a lifetime sampling its seemingly endless varieties and never taste the same wine twice (although for health reasons, we don’t necessarily recommend it).

The grapes permitted for red Bordeaux are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. The first is generally used more heavily in the Left Bank of the Gironde river, while the last tends to be favoured on the Right Bank.

For white wines meanwhile, Bordeaux vintners mostly use a mixture of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle grapes – exclusively so in the case of Bordeaux’s sweet Sauternes wines.

Bordeaux is, unarguably, the most well-known wine region in the world and our Bordeaux wine tours will show you exactly why. The wines that flow from Bordeaux are amongst the very finest and most sought-after by connoisseurs and casual wine lovers alike. The environmental conditions in the region – a calcium-heavy soil structure combined with an oceanic climate – make it a place where vineyards can flourish.

Bordeaux is dissected by the Gironde estuary and its two tributaries, the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers. Based on each appellations’ locations with regards to those rivers, the region is split into three sub-regions: the Left Bank, the Right Bank and Entre-Deux-Mers (“Between Two Tides”, located between the Garonne and the Dordogne).

The Left Bank

Situated in the west and south of the region, and based around the city of Bordeaux, the Left Bank consists of Médoc and Graves. Médoc is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon blends, whilst Graves produces both red and white wine. A number of sweet white wines are also produced in the south of Graves.

The Right Bank

The Right Bank, located in the north and east of the region and based around the city of Libourne, is made up of Fronsac, Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. These three regions are known for the production of Merlot blends.

Entre Deux Mers

Entre-Deux-Mers, between the two ‘banks’, is a producer of dry white, light red and sweet white wines. It is the largest of the sub-regions, though much of it is forested and thus unsuitable for the growing of grapes.

Whilst Bordeaux is primarily famous for its claret, a vast range of wines are produced in the region across its 60 appellations. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc are the most popular grape varieties in Bordeaux. The styles of wine made in Bordeaux are split into six categories; the reds based off region, the whites based off sweetness.

Red Bordeaux and Red Bordeaux Supérieur: These wines, which are produced all across Bordeaux, are often the least expensive and tend to be made with blends dominated by the Merlot grape variety. They tend to be fruity, young and highly popular on international markets.

Red Côtes de Bordeaux: The appellations which produce this style are often found on the outskirts of Bordeaux, and, like the Red Bordeaux and Red Bordeaux Supérieur wines, are usually dominated by Merlot.

Red Libourne: These are the Right Bank wines. Cabernet Sauvignon is sometimes used, though Merlot is again most prevalent here. Wines from the Right Bank (with those from Saint-Émilion being arguably the most popular) are usually fruity, long-lived and have softer tannins.

Red Graves and Médoc: Left Bank wines are made primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon, though Merlot is also used in blends. These wines in particular are concentrated, tannic and long-lived.

Dry White: Dry white wines can be found all around Bordeaux, though Graves is known for them in particular. Sauvignon Blanc or a Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon blend are most common.

Sweet White: Sweet white wines are, again, found across Bordeaux, with Sauternes being perhaps the most famous, though similar wines are also made in Loupiac, Cadillac and Sainte Croix du Mont. Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle grapes affected by noble rot are generally used in making sweet whites.

Bordeaux Gourmet Guide

As you’d expect from a city which lies so close to the Atlantic Ocean, Bordeaux is teeming with seafood. Beyond all the oysters, crabs, shrimp, cockles, clams, scallops and fish that you could ever want, the region is famed for its éclade – a beach barbeque of mussels, cooked on a water-soaked board with a fire built from pine needles and hay.

Bordeaux is also the home of bordelaise sauce, which brings together some of the culinary delights for which the region is most renowned – red wine, shallots, bone marrow and demi-glace – into one, world-famous sauce. The region also boasts confit de canard and foie gras amongst its specialities.

Spotlight Dishes

Éclade : A dish that is found up and down the western coast of France, éclade consists of mussels positioned on a wooden board, covered in pine needles. The needles are set alight, and the mussels are baked. Generally served with bread, salted butter and white wine. Often eaten at the beach.

Bordelaise Sauce : A famous sauce made with red wine, bone marrow, butter and shallots. It is traditionally served with grilled beef or steak, though any meat which pairs well with dry red wines will also do.

Confit de Canard : Duck confit is found all across France, though the south-western regions specialise in it. A duck leg is preserved in salt, garlic and herbs and then poached in its own fat. Served with vegetables and sautéed potatoes. Many local Bordeaux reds will pair nicely with it.

Whether you’re a wine connoisseur, a history buff, or simply a traveler seeking a unique French experience, Bordeaux is a destination that’s worth every bit of the hype.

How Much Does it Cost to Go Wine Tasting in Bordeaux?

Many Bordeaux wine tours allow you to stroll the vineyards, perfect for some picture taking

Bordeaux wine tours range greatly in cost, but overall many of them are not very expensive.

The most expensive tours will include tastings of a variety of high-end wines as well as food and occasionally even the chance to try your hand at making wine. But, for the most part, most wine tours in France cost around $100-$160 per person for a full 8-10 hour day.

Of course, this will vary depending on what is included, if it’s a private wine tour, and so forth.

When Should I Visit Bordeaux Wineries?

It's important to bring a hat along to your wine tour in Bordeaux since it's typically quite sunny

So, if you want those iconic photos of the vineyards overflowing with grapes, then visit in late August to early September. But, if you want to avoid the summer sun and are looking to score some good deals on accommodations, then October is a great season to visit.

October is also great for foliage viewing over the vineyards in Bordeaux, so if this is something that you would like to see, then you should consider visiting in October.

Can you Do Wine Tours in Bordeaux?

It is possible to visit wineries in Bordeaux as long as you have advance reservation

Yes, you can visit the wineries in Bordeaux. Many of them offer wine tasting tours with advance notice while some allow you to simply arrive and ask for a tour.

Depending on your interests, you can opt for a specialized wine tasting of specific brands and types, a tour of the vineyards and winemaking facilities, or a combination of both.

french wine tours bordeaux

Many tour companies offer transportation to these vineyards so you don’t have to worry about driving yourself or taking public transportation (especially helpful since public transport is limited).

With pre-arranged tours, you can also easily choose an accommodation that is central to the city center or in a nearby village to maximize your time spent tasting wines and visiting wineries without having to worry about long travel times.

How Many Days in Bordeaux is Enough?

Since most Bordeaux wine tours last at least 4-8 hours, it's good to spend at least 5 days in Bordeaux

You should plan on spending between 4-7 days in Bordeaux , however, there is no definitive answer to this question, as it will depend on your interests and how much time you have available.

If you are simply looking for a short visit to do some wine tasting at a few wineries, a couple of days should be sufficient.

However, if you want to explore the vineyards or take an immersive wine-tasting tour, you may want to stay in Bordeaux for a week or longer. Some travelers even choose to live in Bordeaux for several months or years, soaking up the local culture and delving deeper into the winemaking process and industry.

How Do You Get to Wineries in Bordeaux France?

If you're doing multiple Bordeaux wine tours, you're going to need a car to get around

The best way to get to wineries in Bordeaux France is by car , as most of the wineries are located outside of the major cities and are not accessible via public transportation. This makes sense since vineyards need lots of open space and plenty of sunlight, and are not typically found nearby highly-trafficked areas.

If you do not have access to a vehicle during your visit, you may want to look for local tour companies that offer wine tasting tours or hire a taxi driver to take you to the wineries of your choice.

Some high-end hotels also offer free pick-up and drop-off in the nearby city or airport. making it very convenient for you to access their vineyards.

However, this isn’t the case for all wineries in Bordeaux, France and these hotels will come with a shocking price tag for most.

Another option is to rent a bicycle or e-bike and explore on your own, though this can be challenging if you want to visit several different wineries in a single day.

french wine tours bordeaux

Best Place to Stay in Bordeaux for Wine Tastings

Some Bordeaux wine tours take place in Medoc while others are in Saint Emilion

The best area to stay in Bordeaux for wine tastings is around the city center, near Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion .

This location is close to the popular wineries as well as smaller, family-run wineries such as Château de Pressac, and guests can spend their days exploring the city before heading out to visit the vineyards.

There are also plenty of restaurants, bars, and hotels in this area so you’re sure to find something to suit your needs.

The iconic Médoc region also provides a great alternative to the Bordeaux city center, with its beautiful rolling hills and picturesque vineyards. The area boasts some of the most prestigious wineries in Bordeaux, so if you’re looking for an unforgettable wine experience, this is a great place to stay!

How Do You Spend Two Days in Bordeaux?

The best time to take one of the best Bordeaux wine tours is between August and September when it is warm and sunny

If you only have two days in Bordeaux, you should spend it exploring the main city where you’ll find beautiful French souvenirs and include a full day between the Bordeaux wine museum and a guided tour discovering your favorite French wines.

Be sure to book a centrally-located accommodation so you can easily get to all the major sites and won’t spend too much time getting to the vineyards.

If you want to primarily spend your time doing wine tastings, then you should consider booking a hotel northeast of Bordeaux in Saint Emilion where you’ll be surrounded by gorgeous vineyards.

What Should I Pack for Bordeaux Wine Tours?

Here is what you should pack for your Bordeaux wine tour

If you’re heading out on one of the aforementioned wine tours of Bordeaux, then you should pack these items:

  • A day bag or backpack
  • A hat to block the sun
  • Water (between the sun and the wine, getting dehydrated is practically a guarantee)
  • Snacks (this is more for people with dietary restrictions since almost every winery you visit will have food available for purchase or included in your Bordeaux wine tasting)
  • Comfortable, stylish clothing (the people hosting these wineries typically dress business casual)
  • Close-toed shoes (heels will sink in the dirt if you’re going for a walk in the vineyards – wear pumps or wedges at a minimum if you want a little extra height)
  • Cash – while you can book your wine tasting tour online in advance, it’s a good idea to have some euros on you for gratuity and small purchases

Which Experiences are Best for Wine Tours & Tastings in Bordeaux?

Some Bordeaux wine tours are perfect for avoiding crowds

If you want to make the most of your wine tours and tastings in Bordeaux, then I recommend heading to a few different types of wineries.

First, explore one of the many sprawling vineyards that are located just outside of the city ( Château Ambe Tour Pourret is a popular favorite), where you’ll get to see firsthand how grapes are grown, harvested, and turned into some of the world’s most delicious wines.

You should also make time to visit one of the wineries in Bordeaux city center ( Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is lovely), where you’ll get a more intimate experience learning about the history and culture of wine-making in France.

And finally, be sure to check out some of the smaller, family-run wineries ( The Naked Vigneron is a hidden gem) that are hidden in the hills outside of the city, where you’ll not only get to experience some truly unique wines, but will also get a chance to meet the wine-makers themselves and learn more about their craft.

What Wine Tastings in Bordeaux are Good for Avoiding Crowds?

Many Bordeaux wine tours take place in rural villages up to 50 miles from the city center

Most Bordeaux wine tasting tours have maximum group sizes of 8-10 people, so you can usually avoid any large-scale crowds.

However, if you’re looking for something a little more intimate then why not try a private tasting? These are available at many wineries and allow you to enjoy the experience without the presence of other tourists – simply book a private tour in advance and you’ll be set for a unique and personal experience.

It’s also worth noting that some of the smaller, independent wineries tend to have fewer visitors than those in the larger estates. So don’t forget to explore these hidden gems along your travels too!

What are the Best Wine Tastings in Bordeaux?

Many Bordeaux wine tours take place at beautiful chateaux's

Château Smith Haut Lafitte in Martillac and Chateau Beauregard in Pomerol on the right bank are some of the best places for wine tours and tastings in Bordeaux.

They both offer a special wine tasting experience as well as a wonderful small group wine tour, with Château Smith Haut Lafitte even offering private meals for larger groups prepared by their award-winning chefs.

If you’re looking to take a full day wine tour equipped with several wine tastings while looking out over stunning vineyards in one of the most famous wine regions in the world, then these two wine estates are sure to impress.

Why Visit Bordeaux ?

Bordeaux is the only region with proximity to the ocean. With immediate access to the sea, the area has enjoyed a huge wine exporting industry for centuries. Bordeaux is renowned worldwide for its vineyards, and is a bustling hub for those who enjoy learning more about food and wine. As the capital of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, you can taste some of the best regional products while enjoying the sights.

What to Know about Bordeaux Wine

Bordeaux's legacy in winemaking, combined with its commitment to tradition and innovation, positions it as a fascinating and esteemed region for French wines, cherished by enthusiasts and collectors globally.

Red grape varieties include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carménère, Malbec and Petit Verdot. White varieties include Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle, Colombard, Merlot Blanc, Sauvignon Gris and Ugni Blanc.

The region itself is vast, stretching some 100km from north to south. Centred around the port city of Bordeaux, along the estuary of the Gironde and the rivers Garonne and Dordogne, this huge territory boasts the most prestigious wine varieties in the country.

Medoc in particular is defined by its famous appellations, including Saint Estèphe,  Margaux , Saint Julien and  Pauillac .

Like Medoc,  Saint-Emilion  is also known for its classifications, and is a great place to start your wine tour. Or head to  Graves  and Pessac-Léognan, the gravel and stone soil sub-region, for a combined hiking and tasting experience. This area is known for its reds, loved by many for the fleshy and balanced flavours with elegant tannins.

What is the Best Time to Visit Bordeaux?

Aquitaine enjoys a pleasant oceanic climate across the year, with summer highs reaching 30°C/86°F or more and the coolest months rarely falling below 12°C/54°F. This means hiking, cycling or strolls on the beach are just as wonderful in the fall or winter.

November , December and January tend to have some rainfall, feeding the needs of vineyards.

Wineries and vineyards are wonderful to visit throughout the year, but the September harvest often means that wineries are unable to receive visitors. January can be barren in terms of the vines, but many people enjoy the atmospheric views around this time of year. It’s also important to note that weekend tastings can be difficult with certain châteaux, so be sure to plan ahead.

Château d’Yquem

The most prestigious maker of Sauternes, a sweet white wine of which one rare vintage recently auctioned for an astounding $100,000, the Chateau d’Yquem is located in the village of Sauternes, south of Bordeaux. Regularly touted as producing the most complex, flavorful and aromatic sweet white wine on the planet, their “Premier Cru Classe superieur” (superior-class vintage) Sauternes is so meticulously cultivated that each vine reportedly produces only a single glass of wine. The characteristically golden wine, with notes of tropical fruit, is aged in oak barrels for three years; rather unusually for white wines, it ages extraordinarily well. This explains why the Chateau’s most coveted vintages are up to 50 years old– and why investors jump at the occasion to procure them.

Meanwhile, the 400-year old chateau offers a luxurious backdrop for tastings and tours of the premises; even if you’re staying in Bordeaux and have only got a morning or afternoon, this is a worthwhile excursion.

Château la Tour-Carnet

Blending rich literary history, medieval romantic appeal, and superb bordeaux wine tours opportunities, this Chateau situated 45 minutes northwest of Bordeaux is home to a Haut Médoc wine that earned it a place among the 1855 Grands Crus Classés. One of the oldest winemakers in the Médoc, the La Tour-Carnet boasts medieval historic roots: part of its premises, including its striking round tower, have stood here since the 11th century. In fact, it’s one of the only estates in the region to feature a genuine moat and drawbridge, making it a must-visit for bordeaux wine tours enthusiasts.

The philosophers Michel de Montaigne and La Boetie reportedly visited the premises of the château, giving it genuine intellectual appeal as well as elegance. Now owned by Bernard Magrez, the estate is a rarefied choice for lodging in the region, and their private gastronomic lunch and dinner service is reputed as excellent, particularly for its wine and food pairings.

Château smith haut lafitte.

Rolling green vineyards, gastronomic dining and spectacular thermal bathsare among the breathtaking sights and luxurious amenities that await visitors to the Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte. This much-coveted luxury wine maker, whose elegant premises are situated in the Pessac-Léognan vintnering appellation only 20 minutes from central Bordeaux, produces both “grand cru classé” reds and whites that regularly rank among the region’s most outstanding wines. The recently renovated tasting rooms and wine-making facilities at the chateau make for a very pleasant afternoon of sampling and purchasing; the Chateau is well known for its harmonious architecture and eye-catching sculptures.

Meanwhile, gastronomy and superb possibilities for relaxation await with private dining at the Chateau and close access to the Caudalie “Vinotherapie” spa, located just across the road. What spells luxury more clearly than sampling world-class wine, then getting pampered with spa products specially formulated with grape extracts?

Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte

Château Cos d’Estournel

Situated in in the charming town of Saint Estèphe, the Cos d’Estournel chateau– with its striking orientalist design–has long been renowned for elicting an “Arabian Nights” ambience, in mid-Médoc. But since the owners revamped the winery it is above all coveted for its spectacularly modern; innovation-focused facilities (see photo above). Visits and tastings of the superb “Cos” wines– from voluptuous “Pagode” reds to intensely floral, aromatic whites– can be made upon appointment. The onsite museum will be of interest to dedicated oenophiles, or those who are simply curious to learn more about wine-making.

Château Margaux

Doubtless the most famous of the wine-tasting destinations (and producers) on our list, the Chateau Margaux has been attracting wealth and royalty for centuries. In the 12th century, it was known as “La Mothe de Margaux” and was frequented by European royal figures– but it wouldn’t become a wine-making estate until the late 16th century. Since then, and despite a tumultuous history that saw the estate suffer from a fungus that destroyed the vineyards and many different waves of ownership, it has proudly stood as perhaps the most globally prestigious Bordeaux appellation. It is the only Chateau to produce wines that bear its name– a rare honour.

Producing remarkably rich, complex reds and whites that have become staples in auction houses around the world, the Chateau and its surrounding vineyards are lavishly beautiful; the 19th-century, starkly white estate is framed by tall canopies of trees and offer a lush, luxurious setting. It can be difficult to secure a booking for a tasting here, so reserving well ahead is strongly recommended. Having an expert guide arrange the visit will ensure you avoid disappointment.

In autumn, Bordeaux’s charm continues to shine with the arrival of the grape harvest. This is a unique opportunity for wine lovers to witness the winemaking process in action and even take part in grape-picking activities. The mild weather at this time of year makes it easy to explore the city.

Spring is a particularly enchanting time, as the city bursts into bloom with vibrant flowers and verdant landscapes. During this period, the renowned Bordeaux Wine Festival often takes place, offering an immersive experience of the region’s vinicultural heritage.

Choosing spring or autumn to visit Bordeaux also means avoiding the peak summer months, when the city can become overcrowded and temperatures can sometimes soar. Find more information about when to visit Bordeaux .

Inside the Cité du Vin: The World's Biggest Wine Museum

I n the Ancient world, wine was to mortals as ambrosia was to the Gods. And Greek mythology firmly emphasized the heightened enjoyment of wine within the place it is consumed, preferably in the presence of nymphs and satyrs. While such mythical deities are unfortunately indisposed today, Sotheby’s Wine is enthusiastically channelling their spirit in the Wine and Dine Experiences / Benefiting the Wine Culture Heritage / Cité du Vin sale in Bordeaux on 12 February 2024, an event in support of the new-generation, interactive Cité du Vin Museum, the world’s biggest museum devoted to all things wine.

Following the successful inaugural collaboration in 2019, Sotheby’s is once again pairing with the museum to offer bidders the chance to secure sensational, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, as well as a selection of ex-cellar bottles, some of exceptionally rare formats. The proceeds from the sale will support the Cité du Vin’s mission to continuing with its dynamic program that encompasses 8,000 years of global wine heritage, science, and culture.

french wine tours bordeaux

In this auction, winemakers around the world have donated some of their finest vintages, as well as their time and hospitality, to make up the 60-lot sale. As well as the fine wines, there are also some unmissable experiences on offer courtesy of prestigious vineyards, ranging from exclusive dinners at Michelin-starred restaurants to overnight stays. For instance, how about a curated selection of Château Cheval Blanc 2008, paired with a private tour and tasting for six guests at the namesake estate? Or maybe a similar experience at the Château Latour, in the Medoc region, or the Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, in Tuscany?

french wine tours bordeaux

“We are happy with this new collaboration with Sotheby’s Wine whose expertise and reputation will draw international attention to our activities”, says Géraldine Thomas, the Cité du Vin’s Director of Development. “And we are very grateful to our generous donors! The selection is so exceptional and varied that it would be impossible for me to pick a favourite lot over another.”

Since opening its doors in 2016, the Cité du Vin has become a major attraction in Bordeaux, a city steeped in wine-making history. With a 14,000 square meter eco-friendly building, designed by Anouk Legendre et Nicolas Desmazières of XTU architects, the museum has been dubbed by some as a “Guggenheim of wine”, a description no doubt inspired by its stunning curvilinear shapes that evoke “the sensuality and the immateriality of wine”.

“Our mission is to make wine accessible to the as many people as possible. The Cité du Vin provides a universal approach featuring wine as world cultural heritage”

But the Cité du Vin is also a foundation, committed to educating visitors, from professional oenophiles to the culturally-curious, through state-of-the art technology and interactive installations. “Our mission is to make wine culture accessible to as many people as possible” says Thomas. “There are other wine museums in the world, but they usually focus on the region where they are located. The Cité provides a universal approach featuring wine as world cultural heritage.”

french wine tours bordeaux

Patronage has, from day one, been indispensable to the museum’s cultural development. Without charity fund-raising, the foundation would not have been able to upgrade its third-floor 'permanent display' into a 'permanent exhibition'. The reason for this change stems from surveys, which revealed the public’s desire to learn more about the actual process of wine making. “We also wanted to include a stronger focus on ‘the living’, because nature is the starting point of everything, wine comes first and foremost from a plant”, continues Thomas.

french wine tours bordeaux

Today, in response to public feedback, this foundational element of viticulture is highlighted at the start of the museum experience, whereas previously, it was confined to conferences and workshops. And it is clearly intended to reach as many people as possible as Thomas points out: “‘All of the Cité’s contents - videos, audio recordings, interactive installations - have been translated into eight languages; French, English, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, and Chinese.”

For the first-time (or indeed, returning) visitor perhaps the best way to sample the delights in store at the museum, with full benefit of the staff’s knowledge and expertise, is to attend one of the popular 'Via Sensoria' experiences that takes place between 26 March and 3 November. This ‘immersive journey through wine’ (co-created by the production company GEDEON Programmes and interior designer Sylvain Roca) is a one-hour tasting tour, with a sommelier taking guests through a chronological progression of sensory delights, with wines paired with seasonal artistic experiences, including a Prosecco Superiore DOCG for spring, and a Sauternes wine for winter.

french wine tours bordeaux

Surprisingly perhaps, for an institution devoted to the pleasures of the grape, alcohol is not the focus of the Museum. Rather, the emphasis is on sensory experience, taste, flavour, and aromas. To that end, the teetotaller will also find much to savour in the museum, with inventive and imaginative non-alcoholic concoctions available ensuring all visitors can experience a journey of flavours and sensations. Fruit syrups, as carefully prepared and paired as the wines, are offered during 'Via Sensora' and across the Cité du Vin, the Maison Meneau’s signature hibiscus iced tea, apple and lavender-flavored Fizz, and berry syrups convey delicate nuances and depths, on a par with their alcoholic counterparts.

french wine tours bordeaux

Another striking aspect of the Cité du Vin’s approach is its people. The museum’s friendly sommeliers are as far from the traditional image of snooty oenophile as can be imagined. The sommeliers who lead guests through the ‘Via Sensora’ tour not only know their wines inside out, but have been trained in sophrology, a dynamic relaxation method based on physical and mental exercises. An unusual requirement maybe, but one that adds a profound dimension to the experience. “Our hosts help visitors keep in touch with their bodies and their feelings more than in any other classical tasting experience”, explains Thomas. “While we have them taste wines from 50 partner estates in the world, we occasionally offer tastings featuring exceptionally great vintages.”

french wine tours bordeaux

"We are thrilled to once again partner with the iconic Cité du Vin, bringing our international clientele a selection of extraordinary experiences and exceptional bottles from renowned wineries worldwide. Generous donations from winemakers have created an impressive array of lots, including private tours, exclusive dinners, and a curated selection of wines in various sizes, with a focus on large bottles. This auction is a true celebration of wine culture, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the people behind these remarkable wines. We expect bidders to buy several lots and make the trip of their lifetime. ”

The Cité du Vin has recently revealed the highlights of its 2024 cultural programme. Again, expectations are exceeded, with the sheer scope and appeal of an events calendar that far exceeds the business of wine making. For instance, one can attend a talk with businessman and journalist Saskia de Rothschild or join a fascinating conference about the importance of wine in the 18th century, enjoy a tasting menu following the projection of and based on the movie 'No Reservation' starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, or take up a masterclass demonstrating how to reduce environmental impact. And that is, literally, just a taste. Clearly, the Cité du Vin is much more than just a repository of the past – it’s fizzing with fresh, exciting ideas and possibilities for the future. Cheers!

The Wine and Dine Experiences | Benefiting the Wine Culture Heritage | Cité du Vin sale takes place online on 12 February at 1500 CET

This Is France’s Most Underrated Wine Region

I really didn’t know much about France’s Languedoc wine region before I traveled there last October. Now, I can’t open a restaurant’s wine menu without immediately searching for Languedoc wines — maybe because drinking them takes me back to warm, sunny days sipping them in verdant vineyards and sidewalk restaurants, maybe because I just get really excited to see wines from this underrated region increasingly getting their due.

The Languedoc stretches from Provence to the Pyrenees , and vineyards benefit from Mediterranean sea breezes and soils rich with clay, limestone, schist and granite. Native grape varieties like grenache, syrah, mourvèdre, carignan, cinsault, picpoul, vermentino and viognier are used in abundance. Languedoc has been historically known for producing great value wines, but especially in recent years, that definitely doesn’t mean low-quality — in fact, I have yet to come across a Languedoc wine that I don’t like.

Whether you’re looking to check an amazing wine destination off your list or are simply craving a holiday in the South of France, here’s everywhere to stay, eat and, of course, drink in Languedoc.

Where to Wine

There are so many excellent Languedoc wineries, so this is only a small list of the vineyards you can visit during a trip. Here they are broken down by town, but during my visit, we never drove more than an hour between estates, and often they are 10 to 20 minutes apart.

Pezénas

Domaine Monplézy

This winery is located in Pézenas (where we recommend staying during your Languedoc adventure, more on that later), so it’s a must-visit. The Sutra de Germa-Gil family has been making wine for four generations, and you can try their delicious bottlings during a weekday afternoon visit to the tasting room.

Domaine La Croix Gratiot

This winery is situated between the Bassin de Thau (a string of lagoons that stretch along the French coast) and the clay-limestone hills where they grow 30 hectares of grapes. They offer free tours and tastings and often host events like concerts. Try the Le Chant des Dolia, a silky, minerally GSM (grenache, syrah and mourvèdre blend) with notes of red fruits and black pepper.

Domaine de Campaucels

Fans of dry, high-acid whites will love picpoul, and Domaine de Campaucels makes one of our favorite bottles. You can even opt to book a stay at the winery’s 13th century home, which features an outdoor kitchen so you can cook a meal among the century-old pines. Be on the lookout for live music and other events.

Mas Du Novi

This estate has been producing wine since the 11th century, and their 42 hectares of organic vineyards are some of the most picturesque we’ve seen. Mas Du Novi’s cellar is open seven days a week with no appointment necessary, so stop by to taste their excellent wines and explore the grounds (which includes a very old and quaint chapel).

Château Saint-Martin de la Garrigue

A Renaissance château, olive groves and lush grounds accompany more than 50 vineyard plots that grow 18 grape varieties at Château Saint-Martin de la Garrigue. Not only can you visit for a tasting and a bite, you can also book the property for special events.

Clos du Temple

Part of the Gérard Bertrand wine portfolio, Clos du Temple is focused on one thing: making one of the best rosés in the world. The blend of grenache, cinsault, syrah and mourvèdre is aged in new French oak, and the best way to try it is in-person at the verdant hillside vineyard.

Domaine Allegria

Located about a 10 minute drive from Pézenas, this lovely estate is worth a visit to try Allegria’s  mourvèdre and syrah blends like Tribu du Volcan and La Belle Histoire . You can also book a sunset dinner, featuring a home-cooked meal with wine pairings (oui, s’il vous plait!).

Mas Gabriel

Also a short drive from Pézenas, this organic vineyard grows 6.5 hectares of vines on basalt and clay-limestone soils. They are open for tastings by appointment Monday to Friday and for walk-ins on Saturday. Don’t miss the Champs des Bleuets , a bright, balanced blend of vermentino, grenache blanc and grenache gris.

Murviel-lès-Béziers

Terre des Dames

Winemaker Lidewij van Wilgen is originally from Amsterdam, but she studied oenology and viticulture in France and has been the owner and winemaker of Terre des Dames since 2002. It’s a family affair, as her three daughters grew up on the estate and are now involved in the business. Her rosés are especially gorgeous, which you can try during their Tuesday summer tastings in English (and Thursdays in Dutch).

Villeveyrac

Abbaye de Valmagne

Not only is this historic monument (it was founded in 1139) one of the most beautiful abbeys in France, it’s also one of the oldest vineyards in Languedoc. Abbey tours and wine tastings are offered year-round, and the on-site restaurant Vigneron features meats and cheeses from local producers and produce from their organic vegetable garden.

How Bats in Bordeaux Are Sustainably Saving Wine

It’s part of a larger plan to eradicate pesticides and invasive moths

Where to Eat

A 12-minute drive from Pézenas, this restaurant and guesthouse from Jean-Claude Mas is at the heart of Domaine Mas, which covers 150 hectares of vineyards. The multi-course lunch and wine pairing is the move, and afterwards you can tour the vineyards on horseback or buggy. If you’d rather come for dinner and can’t bear to leave, two lovely guest rooms (with a swimming pool, to boot) are available for rent.

Assiette d’Anatole

Situated on a charming side street in Pézenas, Assiette d’Anatole serves regional French specialties, many of which are cooked on their wood-fired grill. They also have a great list of AOP Languedoc Pézenas wines to pair with the delicious food.

Le Pré Saint Jean

Chef Jean-Michel Sempé leads the team at Le Pré Saint Jean, where beautifully-plated dishes taste as good as they look. Think an artichoke tartlet with foie gras and truffles, and line-caught hake risotto with fennel and aniseed mussel jus — délicieux!

Trinque Fougasse O’Sud

This lively restaurant in Montpellier features a wine tasting bar — simply ask the bartender to sample the wines you want to try, then purchase by the glass or bottle for your table. Order platters of cheese, charcuterie, grilled veggies, meat and seafood, and sweets to pair with your selection.

Located across the street from Montpellier’s Jardin des Plantes, this popular restaurant is known for its bowls, burgers and cocktails. Even a rainy day doesn’t stop locals from gathering under awnings and umbrellas to enjoy the all-day cafe.

Atelier & Co.

Shellfish lovers have to visit this waterfront oyster farm and restaurant, where you can dine on mussels and oysters, fresh from the Bassin de Thau. Don’t forget a glass of the region’s picpoul de pinet, which pairs perfectly with seafood.

Where to Stay

Courtyard Montpellier

When embarking on your Languedoc trip, you’ll likely have to fly in and out of Montpellier from Paris or elsewhere in Europe. If you decide to stay a night or two in the city (which you should because it’s great), Courtyard Montpellier offers modern rooms with a beautiful pool and nice restaurant (the breakfast is especially lovely).

Garrigae Distillerie de Pézenas

Pézenas is an ideal home base for a trip to Languedoc, and this former distillery has been transformed into a charming hotel. Many of the rooms feature kitchens and balconies, which makes it feel like you’re staying in someone’s country home. Breakfast is served in the parlor every morning, and the pool, spa and wine bar are there to help you unwind after a day of tasting.

The Hollywood legend signed a special-edition magnum of Bordeaux benefiting Meals on Wheels while being honored in Los Angeles

  • Collin Dreizen

Where does wine meet Hollywood royalty? At the American Cinematheque Award ceremony! (And in some of our favorite movies and TV series .) On Feb. 16 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, Oscar-, Emmy- and Tony-winning performer Dame Helen Mirren became the 37th recipient of the award, which celebrates artistic accomplishments in motion pictures. Staying within tradition , the Barbie and F9 star autographed a special-edition magnum of Bordeaux during the event, which also honored producer-entrepreneur Kevin Goetz and his entertainment research-analytics company Screen Engine/ASI.

Specifically, Mirren signed a bottle of 2016 Château Malartic-Lagravière engraved with her name. As in past years , the Bonnie family (owners of Pessac-Léognan’s Château Malartic-Lagravière and Argentina’s Bodega Diamandes ) were wine sponsors for the festivities. Malartic estate co-owner Véronique Bonnie presented the magnum and brought the château’s 2019 white and 2013 red for guests to enjoy at the cocktail reception and gala dinner.

“Helen Mirren belongs to these iconic actresses that have had such a long career embracing so many complex yet different roles,” Bonnie told Wine Spectator via email, noting how impressively Mirren speaks French. “And as you know, the wines of Bordeaux have had strong ties to our English friends.”

The bottle will remain at the Malartic estate, where it will sit alongside magnums autographed by past American Cinematheque honorees, “to remind us that giving is an important part of our company and our culture,” Bonnie explained. Coinciding with the new addition, Malartic made a donation to Mirren’s preferred charitable organization, Meals on Wheels West .

“[Mirren’s husband,  Taylor Hackford ,] explained to us the amount of work and detail Helen puts in preparing every single one of her roles,” Bonnie recalled. “At Malartic, we are also constantly striving for quality and precision, paying attention to every detail and knowing that we do work [to] transmit the legacy of our estate and terroir .”

This is not the first time Malartic has had a red-wine carpet moment. Beyond its American Cinematheque appearances, the château was the wine sponsor for the 2023 Santa Barbara International Film Festival. It also promoted Kenneth Brannagh ’s latest Hercule Poirot thriller, A Haunting in Venice , and its wine had an on-screen part in the preceding film, Death on the Nile , along with appearances in Taken II (written by vintner Robert Kamen ) and on Netflix series Emily in Paris .

“Wine and cinema have in common that they involve a large number of dedicated people working together for many months, each [person] crucial to the final success of the project, nothing being left to chance,” said Bonnie. “They allow people to live an emotional experience, creating moments shared and aimed at aging with us.”

Bordeaux Wine and Hollywood: Malartic-Lagravière at the American Cinematheque Awards

Helen Mirren is not the first American Cinematheque Award recipient to sign a bottle of Malartic-Lagravière Bordeaux. In 2022, Véronique Bonnie brought a magnum for actor, philanthropist and football club owner Ryan Reynolds to sign . In 2021, Scarlet Johansson left her autograph on an engraved bottle. And Mirren’s fellow F9 star Charlize Theron was the first honoree to sign a Malartic-Lagravière magnum back in 2019.

French winemakers block trucks coming from Spain during a demonstration by the tollbooth in Le Boulou, near the Spanish border

Problems facing the European wine industry – and some bottles to try

Inequality between regions, competition with cheaper imports, producers going into administration – just some of the problems affecting the production of wine on the Continent

Tesco Finest Saint-Chinian, Languedoc, France 2020 (£9, Tesco ) Convoys of protesting farmers have been one of the features of the year so far across Europe, with scenes of tractors blockading cities and motorways, and angry protestors setting fire to hay bales and battling with police from Brussels to Barcelona. Among other things, the Continent’s agricultural sector is in revolt over rising production costs, shrinking margins, cheap imports and a set of new EU rules aimed at helping the bloc meet its environmental targets, plus a range of country-specific issues, all of which, they say, are making farming unviable. That French winegrowers have been among the protestors might try the sympathy of some, given that, according to French Ministry of Agriculture statistics, their average annual income is €78,590 – one of the highest in French farming, and a good deal higher than the circa-€40,000 average French annual salary. As ever, the average doesn’t tell the full story, however, with great inequalities within and between regions, and with many growers in, for example, the Languedoc – home to Tesco’s hearty spicy Saint-Chinian red – earning considerably less than that.

Château Pey La Tour, Bordeaux, France 2021 (£8.99, Waitrose ) Southern French winegrowers have been at the forefront of sometimes violent protests since way before the current wave of demonstrations, with a militant group known as CRAV (Comité Regional d’Action Viticole) and its local branches (CAV), behind a string of direct actions over the past 40 years, which have ranged from stopping and sabotaging trucks bringing in cheaper wine from Spain (a particular bugbear) to destroying offices and tanks of wine at a wine importers to, in January, setting off an explosion at the offices of the regional government’s environment, development and housing department. But the desperation that has fuelled CRAV can be found all over la France viticole. That includes Bordeaux, where the presence of a top 10% of luxury goods (single bottles change hands for four-figure prices) sometimes obscures the reality that most of the region’s producers trade in much more everyday fare, such as the suave, ripe cassis-scented Chateau Pey La Tour. In recent years, some producers have struggled to compete with cheaper or better marketed rivals from around the world.

Cosme Palacio Vino de Laguardia Crianza, Rioja, Spain 2018 (£22 , Reserve Wines ) One of the ways the French government has attempted to helped winegrowers deal with unsold or under-priced wine, is to pay subsidies to uproot vines. Some €38m of French government money has been put towards a €57m plan to pull up as much as 10% of Bordeaux’s vineyards, for example. Similar issues are affecting Spain’s most important wine region, Rioja, where a vast oversupply has brought widespread hardship to local growers, with grape prices plunging and much of the 2023 harvest going unsold, and with the regional government investing in an emergency distillation of tens of millions of litres of wine into industrial ethanol. With one of the region’s biggest names, Marques de la Concordia, having gone into administration earlier this year, it’s no wonder some believe Rioja’s future will inevitably be focused on its higher-priced, higher-quality wines, such as Cosme Palacio’s gloriously complex Laguardia Crianza. However, as anyone in the Languedoc will tell them, that kind of transition, with its inevitable, enormous social cost, is somewhat easier said than done.

Hiding in plain sight in Southern France , the enchanting fairytale village of Eguisheim is well worth bookmarking for your European summer holiday.

The lesser-known destination in France’s Alsace wine region is easily accessible from the UK, without the hustle and bustle of hotspots like Paris, Lille and Bordeaux.

The village is built around a castle and unfolds in concentric streets lined with buildings with the most delightful façades and fountains that will make you feel like you’re in a Disney film. In fact, it’s thought to have inspired the setting of the original Beauty and the Beast film.

From the colourful, cobbled paths to its close proximity to the countryside, it’s easy to see why Eguisheim was recently named France’s best-kept secret by the travel website European Best Destinations.

Where is Eguisheim in France?

This stunning mediaeval village is located in the Haut-Rhin department in Grand Est in north-eastern France, which means it’s close to the border with Germany and Switzerland.

It lies in the historical region of Alsace, a region known for its combination of French and German culture and most notably wine .

In fact, it’s one of the villages along the Alsace wine route, through which visitors are guided along eight villages known for wine production followed by wine tasting and a tour of a winery.

What is the weather like in Eguisheim?

During the spring the weather is mild and the hottest period falls between June and September, with an average daily high temperature between 22-26°C.

What are the best things to do and tourist attractions to see in Eguisheim?

Walking through the narrow, cobbled streets of its old town lined with beautifully preserved half-timbered houses painted in vibrant colours will be a visual treat in itself.

Or if you crave a more structured adventure, you can book a walking tour to take you through the old town centre and beyond. Tourists should see the central Château Saint-Léon, which is a centuries-old castle.

In southwest Egusiheim you’ll find Husseren-les-Châteaux and the ruins of the Three Castles of Eguisheim, from the Middle Ages.

The three castles consist of the Wahlenbourg, which is the oldest after being constructed in the 11th century, the Dagsbourg to the north and the Weckmund to the south were built in the 12th century.

The vineyards around Eguisheim produce Alsace white wine and tourists can visit the wineries to learn more about the world-renowned local produce.

Maison Wolfberger is highly rated on Tripadvisor, and one user calling it a ‘very classy and modern affair’ with ‘friendly staff with great knowledge of their products’.

The top rated attraction to see here is Vieille ville d’Eguisheim (Old Town of Eguisheim), which has drawn comparisons to beloved fairytales like Beauty and the Beast.

A visitor known as 23rita on Tripadvisor gushed: ‘This is the most charming spectacularly gorgeous place I have visited! It is just magical with the medieval architecture as if you are in a fairytale! You walk through winding narrow cobbled streets and with every few steps will see tremendous photo opportunities.’

Another visitor named Waddler called the village ‘ridiculously pretty’.

While @paolovbossi declared: ‘Probably the best village we have so far visited in Alsace. Every year we choose a village for our lunch break and this time we stopped in Eguisheim.

‘Just fantastic, a small village, a sort of maze with narrow streets, a lot of wineries and a small central square just lovely. It looks like being in a fairytale. It is few minutes from Colmar and it deserves absolutely a visit!
