Turkey Visa for Tourists: A Complete Guide

Updated: October 19, 2023

Turkey visa on arrival image

Turkey has a liberal visa policy offering visa exemption and e-visas to many nationalities. A Turkey visa is also quite easy to obtain from the embassy or an authorized agent.

Turkey has introduced e-Visa to simplify its visa application process and replace its Visa on Arrival. Currently, 30 nationalities can obtain a Turkey e-Visa from the comfort of their homes. 21 nationalities can also obtain an e-Visa if holding a visa or residence permit from any Schengen country, US, UK or Ireland.

Many nationalities from the African continent that were previously eligible for e-Visas were unfortunately removed from that list recently. They will now have to apply for a Turkey visa through a Turkish mission or an agent.

Minimum passport validity to enter Turkey as a tourist

The passport validity is different for different nationalities. It also depends on whether you are visa-exempt or require a visa.

For nationalities that are visa-exempt, the minimum passport validity required is 60 days beyond your “allowed period of stay” in Turkey. For some, it’s 90 days.

For those who require an e-Visa, VOA or visa from the embassy, the minimum passport validity required is 6 months from the day of arrival. For some, it’s 3 months beyond the validity of their visas.

So in general, you will be fine with 6 months of validity remaining your passport at the time of entering Turkey.

Turkey transit visa requirements

Transit visas are NOT REQUIRED for transiting through Turkish international airports.

If you are not leaving the international transit area, then you do not require a transit visa. But if you have to leave the international transit area, or claim your bags, or change to a different airline, then you would require a transit visa.

Turkey visa requirements for cruise passengers

A Turkey visa is NOT REQUIRED for cruise passengers for up to 72 hours.

Cruise visitors are issued a Harbor City Entry Permit that’s valid for 72 hours and limited to the harbor city where the cruise arrived and its surroundings.

TURKEY VISA ON ARRIVAL

Turkey introduced its e-Visa system in 2013 with the intention of phasing out its Visa on Arrival. But VOA is still available and a few countries that are eligible for e-Visa are also eligible for obtaining VOA at international airports in Turkey.

Even though the e-Visa takes only a few minutes to apply, the VOA fee is considerably lower than the e-Visa fee for certain nationalities. It makes sense to simply get a VOA instead of an e-Visa if you are eligible and the fee is lower.

Validity of Turkey Visa on Arrival

Visa on Arrival is valid for 90 days, with multiple entries. Total stay cannot be more than 90 days in a 180-day period.

How long can you stay in Turkey with Visa on Arrival

Turkey Visa on Arrival is valid for 90 days. That means, if you continue to stay in Turkey after you have obtained your Visa on Arrival, you can stay up to 90 days. But if you leave and come back, you can only stay until your Visa on Arrival expiration date.

Also, your total stay in Turkey cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.

  • Your arrival date in Turkey is March 10
  • You obtained VOA on March 10
  • Your visa is valid from 10 March 2022 to 08 June 2022 (90 days)
  • After 45 days, on 24 April 2022, you left Turkey.
  • You entered Turkey again on 19 May 2022 using your previous VOA. You can only stay till 08 June 2022, which is 21 days.

Visa on Arrival application process

The VOA process is quite quick at airports in Turkey. Right before the immigration or passport control, you will see a section called “Visa”. Stop by there and get your visa on arrival.

For obtaining VOA, all you need is your passport and visa on arrival fee in USD, EUR or GBP. Some nationalities require a passport-size photo.

Documents required

You must present the following documents.

  • Passport that’s valid for at least 6 months from the day of arrival in Turkey
  • Cash in USD, EUR or GBP for visa fee payment

The Visa on Arrival (VOA) fee starts from $30 and goes up all the way to $70 USD depending on nationality. Below is the Visa on Arrival fee for all eligible nationalities.

Processing time

It usually takes a few minutes for the Visa on Arrival process. But it depends on how busy the Visa on Arrival section is.

Passport Photos: Submit recent passport-sized photos that meet the specific dimensions and formatting requirements.

Travel Plans: Provide a detailed itinerary of your trip, including flight bookings and lodging information, to demonstrate the purpose of your visit.

Proof of Lodging: You may need to show confirmation of hotel bookings or a letter of invitation from a host in Turkey.

Validity and Stay Duration

Visa Validity Period: The length of time a multiple entry visa for Turkey is valid can differ based on the visa category and the citizenship of the person applying. It is important to know the start and end dates of the visa's validity and schedule trips within that time period.

Maximum Duration per Visit: Each time you enter Turkey, there is typically a maximum number of days you are allowed to stay. It is essential to follow these limits to prevent overstaying your visa, which could result in legal trouble and limits on future travel.

Renewing and Extending Your Visa:

Renewing Your Visa: If it looks like you will need to keep traveling to Turkey after your multiple entry visa expires, look into renewing it. Some visas can be renewed, while others will require submitting a new visa application.

Asking for More Time (Extension): In some cases you can request more time in Turkey by applying to extend your stay before your current visa is running out. This usually means filing an extension request with the immigration authorities there prior to your visa's expiration date. The extension for Turkey visa online too is possible.

Special Situations:

Travelers for Work: People who travel for business often find multiple entry visas useful because their jobs require them to come and go frequently for meetings, conferences, or negotiations. Be sure to include all necessary work papers to back up your application.

Visiting Family: Those with family in Turkey, like husbands/wives, kids, or parents, may see multiple entry visas as especially helpful for easy, regular trips. Proof like marriage licenses or birth certificates might be needed.

Causes for Denial

There are several causes for visa refusals. Visas might be turned down due to inadequate paperwork, not enough money, weak connections to the applicant's home nation, or worries about what the applicant plans to do. Being aware of the prevalent justifications for rejection can assist you in assembling a more vigorous application.

Tips for a Successful Application:

Thoroughly Review Requirements: Before starting the application process, carefully examine the specific criteria for getting a multiple entry visa for Turkey based on your nationality and reason for visiting. This guarantees you submit all necessary paperwork and details.

Plan Ahead: Given the potential differences in processing times, it is advisable to plan your application well ahead of when you intend to travel. This makes sure you have enough time to finish the process and get your visa before your scheduled trip.

Accurate Information: Precision is extremely important in the visa application process. Give truthful and current information in your application form, and double-check all documents for any mistakes or inconsistencies.

Financial Documentation: Some countries may need proof that you can financially cover your expenses during your stay. This could include bank statements, employment verification, or a letter of financial support.

Communication with Authorities: If you have any questions or uncertainty during the application process, do not hesitate to contact the relevant embassy, consulate, or visa application center. Clear communication can help solve issues and ensure a smooth application process.

Managing the application process for a multiple entry visa to Turkey demands careful preparation, focus on specifics, and comprehension of the prerequisites. If travelers adhere to the guidance given and stay up-to-date, they can boost their probability of obtaining a multiple entry visa, paving the way for a smooth and enriching time visiting Turkey. A Turkey visa online is a legal permit or travel authorization to enter and stay in this country. It allows a foreign tourist to stay for up to 90 days in Turkey within 180 days of visa validity. It is electronically linked to the passport, so Turkish passport officials can easily verify eVisa's validity at the port of entry. Turkey eVisa can be both a single-entry and multiple-entry visa based on the passport type, allowing many nationalities to apply. With a multiple-entry visa, an individual can enter this country several times within the visa validity period.

However, if you belong to a nationality where one needs to visit the nearest Embassy to apply for a Turkey travel visa , it's possible to make an application for a Turkey visa online when holding a residence permit or visa to the UK, US, or Schengen countries.

Turkey eVisa Validity and Requirements

A Turkey online visa is valid for up to 6 months from your intended date of arrival, with a stay of up to 90 days within that validity period. So, if you are worried about how long your Turkey visa validity is, just add 180 days from your arrival date in Turkey.

Now, speaking of eVisa requirements for Turkey, here are the documents you need to submit:

  • A valid credit or debit card to pay the visa fee

Visas for Turkey

Whether going to Turkey on holiday or wanting to live and work there for the long term, it's necessary to obtain a visa to visit the country.

Expats should note that their passports must be valid for at least six months from their date of arrival in Turkey.

Visit visas for Turkey

Nationals of several countries can obtain a visa upon arrival at the border, but it is recommended that travellers apply for their visa online before travelling to Turkey. The e-visa application is straightforward, making it easy to get a tourist or business visa in a matter of minutes.

Most entry visas for Turkey are multiple-entry and valid for 90 days. It used to be possible to leave Turkey after 90 days and then re-enter the country immediately for a further 90-day period. However, the Turkish authorities have changed this. Visitors will only be able to stay in Turkey for a total of 90 days in any period of 180 days. These days don't have to be consecutive, but they can't be exceeded. The law directly affects expats who have previously resided in Turkey on a tourist visa and made 'visa runs', exiting the country temporarily every 90 days to renew their privileges.

Those who overstay their visa will be subject to bans or fines. This law is designed to encourage long-term residents and expats living in Turkey to apply for proper residence status – documentation that ends up being far costlier than a basic tourist visa.

Work visas for Turkey

Once they've found a job, expats wishing to work in Turkey must apply to their nearest Turkish mission to obtain a work visa. Expats will need to provide their passport, visa application form and a letter from their employer.

Other documents must also be submitted to the Turkish Ministry of Labour and Social Security simultaneously by the employer (no later than ten working days after application) to begin with the work permit application process. Applications usually take up to two months to finalise. Upon their arrival in Turkey, expats must present themselves to their nearest police station to receive the required residence permit.

Residence permits for Turkey

It is now no longer necessary for foreigners working in Turkey to apply for their residence permit separately, as their work permit will include their residence authorisation.

Those moving to Turkey with their families should also note that dependants applying for a residence permit must also file their application at the Turkish consulate .

Depending on the category applied for, the time for which a residence visa is valid ranges from 30 days to three years. The most popular residence visa available, the short-term residence visa is valid for a maximum of two years.

Foreigners who wish to live, study or work in Turkey are required to register at their nearest police department upon arrival in Turkey, regardless of the validity of their visa. They will be required to present several documents, such as their passport and proof of address.

*Visa regulations are subject to change at short notice, and expats should contact their respective embassy or consulate for the latest details.

What do expats say about the Turkish visa regime? "Visas are an ongoing conversation for expats. The system changes frequently and needs careful attention. Work permits are issued with strict regulation. Resident tourist permits are given on a 5 month to two year spectrum. We encourage people to check with the local immigration office where they want to move to learn what the current requirements are and whether or not they offer interpretor services."  Learn about Emily and Jesse's experiences of expat life in Turkey .

Turkish Tourist Visa Tips

Last Updated on May 2, 2019

Important Notes

• The rules below are for  tourist visas .  Click here  for info on visas for  work, study or residence  in Turkey .

• There are normally  two types of tourist visas . A  single-entry  (tek giriş)  visa  allows you to enter Turkey once. After you leave, no matter how long you’ve stayed in Turkey, you must pay for another visa to enter Turkey again.

A  multiple-entry  (müteaddit giriş)   visa  allows you to enter and leave Turkey multiple times within its period of validity (normally 30, 60, or 90 days) at no additional charge.

• You may obtain  e-visas  online  from an official  Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website , paying by credit card. More…

Pursuant to Turkish government regulations instituted on January 12, 2012, “ 90-day tourist visa ” means that you can visit Turkey for up to 90 days  within any 180-day period . This means that, after staying in Turkey 90 days,  you cannot simply cross the border into another country, stay outside of Turkey for a day or two, then re-enter Turkey on a new 90-day tourist visa . Instead, you must apply in advance at a Turkish consulate for a  residence visa  and, when you arrive in Turkey, you must apply for a  residence permit   (İkamet Tezkeresi).

If you’re coming to Turkey for a short tour of, say, a few weeks, and not returning to Turkey in the near future, this restriction would not affect you. But if you come to Turkey for long periods (several months) frequently, you may be affected.

The regulations are meant to restrict foreigners who are, in effect, living in Turkey for part of the year but have not applied for a residence permit as required. Waivers are granted to certain groups, such as retirees who spend part of the year in Turkey, or foreigners who own property in Turkey and come to live for part of each year.

Official Passports

The term “ official passports ” covers diplomatic, service, special and official passports. You probably have an “ordinary” passport unless you’re going to Turkey on diplomatic, military or other official business. Visa rules for official passports may differ from those for ordinary passports.

Apply for Your Visa in Advance!

All foreigners who need visas may apply for them to  Turkish diplomatic missions . If you do this, apply at least a month before your departure date for Turkey. But if you’re a citizen of one of those countries allowed to  get a visa online in advance , why spend time filling out paper forms months in advance?  More…

Visas for Filmmakers & Researchers

Foreigners who intend to  shoot documentary films , to  conduct research , or to do  archeological excavation , should apply for special permission in advance from the Turkish authorities.

Visas for Truck Drivers

Visa requirements for  truck drivers  may be different. Contact a  Turkish consulate .

Questions & Comments

You can send comments and questions to the Visa section of Turkey’s  Ministry of Foreign Affairs  at  [email protected]  . (I cannot help you with questions on official visa matters—I am not a Turkish diplomat!)

Turkiye Visa Calculator: Simplify Your Travel Planning

Turkiye Visa Calculator: Simplify Your Travel Planning

Short-term visitors from America, Canada, and most of Europe do not typically require a visa to visit Turkey. However, for those holding multiple-entry visas valid for at least six months and with a 90-day duration of stay, there is a stipulation that they cannot spend more than 90 days within a 180-day period in Turkiye. This rule often leads to confusion among travelers who struggle to calculate the length of their stay and the permitted duration of their remaining time in the country.

Understanding the 90/180-Day Rule

The 90/180-day rule is a crucial regulation for travelers visiting Turkiye. It means that within any 180-day period, you are allowed to stay in Turkiye for a maximum of 90 days. This rule applies to short-term visitors and those holding multiple-entry visas.

  • 90 Days: The total number of days you can stay in Turkiye within a 180-day window.
  • 180 Days: The rolling period during which your stay is calculated.

Key Points to Remember:

  • The 180-day period is fixed and moves forward with each day to allow a visa reset date after the 180 days.
  • Both the day of entry and the day of exit are counted as full days towards the 90-day limit.
  • Exceeding the 90-day limit can result in penalties, including fines and entry bans.

To address this issue, we have developed the Turkiye Visa Calculator with careful attention to detail. This tool simplifies the process by performing the calculations for you. All you need to do is enter the entry and exit dates of your visits to Turkiye in chronological order.

It's important to note that the 180-day rule is a fixed period, distinct from the Schengen rule. Whenever you plan to enter Turkiye, you must tally your total days of presence to ensure that you have not exceeded the 90-day limit within that period.

For example, if you enter Turkey on September 1, 2024, and stay for 14 days, your 90-180-day period starts from September 1, 2024, and ends on February 28, 2025.

As a Spanish citizen, you are allowed to stay in the Turkiye region for a maximum of 90 days during this period. However, it's crucial to remember that both the day of entry and the day of exit are counted as full days. Therefore, after your initial stay of 14 days, you will have 76 days remaining for future travel. Your visa will reset around March 1, and we recommend adding an additional 2 days for safety.

If you are a resident of Turkey and plan to leave the country without renewing your expiring residence permit (e.g., expiring on September 1, 2024), there are certain considerations to avoid complications. If you depart before the expiration of your permit, such as on August 28, 2024, you can immediately return on a new travel visa as a British citizen for 90 days after the permit expires.

However, to prevent issues, it is advisable to wait for the 10-day grace period to elapse and return after September 11, 2024. Some individuals have faced bans and fines from border officers for returning within one or two days after their permit expired, due to the 10-day grace period.

In the event that your residence or work permit expires, do not panic. You have a 10-day grace period to renew it. However, if you leave the country after the expiration date, you may be subject to a ban ranging from at least 90 days to a maximum of 5 years, depending on the officer's decision. This is typically due to the C-code visa restriction applied in such cases.

Plan your trips carefully to ensure compliance with this rule and enjoy a hassle-free visit to Turkiye. If you're feeling stuck, contact us today !

  • Passports must be valid for six months beyond your entry date.  You will be  denied entry  into Turkey if there is not enough space for  entry and exit stamps  in your passport.
  • Official passport holders are required to have visa to enter Türkiye .
  • Ordinary passport holders are exempted from visa up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
  • Get entry and exit stamps . You must have a Turkish entry stamp to fly domestically.  Get an exit stamp in your passport when leaving the country  or you may face  difficulties re-entering Turkey in the future  and  a fine .
  • If you are planning to  work, study, or conduct academic or scientific research  in Turkey, you must receive a visa from a Turkish embassy or consulate before arriving in Turkey. Visit  “Living in Turkey”  on the U.S. Embassy’s website.

Syria:  See the  Syria travel advisory.  The U.S. Embassy in Damascus suspended operations in February 2012.  The Department of State continues to warn U.S. citizens against all travel to Syria.  At this time, the Turkey-Syria border is closed except in cases of urgent medical treatment or safety from immediate danger as defined by the Government of Turkey.

Iraq:  See the  Iraq travel advisory .  The Department of State continues to warn U.S. citizens against all travel to Iraq.  The Turkish Government tightly controls entry and exit on the border.

Safety and Security

Terrorism:  The potential for terrorist attacks in Turkey, including against U.S. citizens and interests, remains high.

  • Terrorists have previously attacked U.S. interests in Turkey, including the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul, and the U.S. Consulate in Adana.
  • Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Turkey. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions, airports, and other public areas. Terrorists have also previously targeted Western tourists and expatriates.

Under laws passed in 2018, Turkish security forces have an expanded legal ability to stop and search individuals and to  detain individuals without charge.

For your own safety:

  • Carry a passport or identity document at all times.
  • Follow local news sources during your stay to remain abreast of any potential areas, dates, or times of concern.
  • Exercise caution and good judgment, keep a low profile, and maintain a high level of vigilance.
  • Avoid demonstrations, which may become violent and unpredictable.
  • Obey the instructions of Turkish security personnel at all times.

There have also been threats and acts of violence targeting religious minorities, groups, institutions, and places of worship in Turkey. The level of anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic sentiment remains significant.

Protests and gatherings:  Public gatherings are common in Turkey and can include protests or demonstrations, holiday celebrations, family events, sporting events, and political events in the lead up to elections and following the announcement of election results. U.S. citizens should

  • Avoid demonstrations and gatherings, as they may become violent and unpredictable.
  • Be aware celebratory gunfire is common in some areas and has resulted in deaths in recent years.
  • Follow local authorities instructions, police may take action to disperse the group, including possibly using teargas or detaining participants, even when the government has approved gatherings.

Crime:  Overall street crime in Turkey is low; however, you should use the same precautions you would take in the United States. The following types of crime have been reported in Turkey:

  • Pick-pocketing ,  purse snatching , and  mugging.  Carry only necessary items when in tourist areas.
  • Residential crime  occurs more often in major cities, with criminals targeting ground floor apartments for theft.
  • Sexual assault  has occurred in Turkish baths ( hamams ) or spas, in taxis, and when traveling alone at night. Assaults involving  date rape drugs  have also been reported.
  • Confidence schemes  occur where travelers are tricked into ordering food or drinks at a restaurant, and then are charged incredibly high prices. Patronize well-established restaurants and ask to see a menu with prices before ordering anything.
  • Scams  are common in Turkey, particularly internet scams involving people who met online. Typically, the person in Turkey asks the other person to wire large sums of money to provide financial assistance.  Do not send money to someone you have never met in person.  Exercise due diligence when purchasing jewelry, rugs, or real estate. See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information on scams.

Eastern and Southeastern Turkey: We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens reconsider travel to specific areas in eastern and southeastern Turkey, and do not travel to areas near the Syrian or Iraqi borders.

U.S. Government employees are subject to travel restrictions  to the provinces of Batman, Bingol, Bitlis, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hakkari, Hatay, Kilis, Mardin, Sanliurfa, Siirt, Sirnak, Tunceli and Van.  Mount Ararat , in Agri province, is a special military zone, and  access permission must be obtained before coming to Turkey  from a Turkish Embassy or Consulate.

The following incidents and activities have taken place in eastern and   southeastern Turkey :

  • Terrorist attacks:  Terrorist groups, including Da’esh, also referred to as The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) or The Islamic State of Iraq and ash Sham (ISIS), and the PKK (the Kurdistan Workers’ Party), have conducted large-scale attacks in the area, including suicide bombings, ambushes, and the detonation of car bombs, improvised explosive devices, and other homemade weapons. The PKK has attacked Turkish military and police personnel in the eastern and southeastern provinces, occasionally harming bystanders.
  • Restricted access:  Turkish security forces control access to the southeastern provinces of Hakkari, Mardin and Sirnak along the Iraqi border, and the entire Turkey-Syria border.  Do not photograph or video Turkish military operations or attempt to enter military installations anywhere in Turkey.
  • Shootings:  Turkish towns located along the border with Syria have been struck by bullets and artillery rounds that originate in Syria, some resulting in deaths or injuries.
  • Roadblocks:  Use commercial air travel whenever possible while traveling to southeastern Turkey.  If road travel is necessary, drive only during daylight hours and on major highways.  The Turkish  Jandarma  (rural police) monitors checkpoints on roads. Cooperate if stopped at a checkpoint. Be prepared to provide identification and vehicle registration. Remain calm, do not make any sudden movements, and obey all instructions.  We strongly discourage the use of public transportation in the southeastern region.
  • Demonstrations:  Violent clashes have taken place between Kurdish groups and Turkish police resulting from organized demonstrations.
  • Curfews:  The Turkish Government has instituted temporary curfews in cities throughout the southeast due to blockades of certain neighborhoods by the PKK. Adhere to any locally imposed curfews.

Victims of Crime:  Report crimes to the local police by dialing 155 and contact the U.S. Embassy or nearest consulate. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting the crime. See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas . We urge U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault to contact the U.S. Embassy or closest consulate.

 We can:

  • help you find appropriate medical care
  • assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion.
  • provide a list of local attorneys
  • provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • help you find resources for accommodation and flights home
  • replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the Embassy for assistance and visit the  Embassy webpage  for resources.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules with regard to best practices and safety inspections are regularly enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned.

  • Always carry with you a form of official government photo identification, such as a residence permit or copy of your passport.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the U.S., regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately.  Turkish authorities may not inform U.S. officials of dual nationals arrested in Turkey.  See our  webpage  for further information on arrests.

  • Insulting the State:  It is illegal to show disrespect to the name or image of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, or to insult the Turkish Government, flag, President, or security forces,  including on social media . Erase any sensitive photos, comments, or other materials from your social media pages, cameras, laptops, and other electronic devices that could be considered controversial or provocative.
  • Drug offenses:  Turkish law enforcement is  very aggressive  in combating illegal drugs. Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking of illegal drugs are very strict, and include heavy fines and jail sentences between four and 20 years.
  • Cultural artifacts:  Turkish law has a broad definition of “antiquities” and makes it a crime to remove any from the country. If you buy antiquities, use authorized dealers and get museum certificates for each item. Failure to have a receipt and certificate at departure can result in  your arrest , and  jail time . Contact the  Embassy of the Republic of Turkey  in Washington for specific information regarding customs requirements.
  • Male dual nationals over the age of 18 may be subject to Turkish conscription and compulsory military service. Consult officials at Turkish Embassies or Consulates with any questions before entering Turkey.
  • Counterfeit goods:  Do not buy counterfeit or pirated goods, even if widely available. They are both illegal to bring back into the United States and to purchase locally.
  • Religious proselytizing:  There is no law against religious proselytizing.

LGBTI Travelers:  Homophobia, transphobia, and intolerance towards homosexuality are widespread throughout Turkey. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) individuals are  not protected by anti-discrimination laws  and have been the targets of violence in recent years. References in the law relating to “offenses against public morality,” “protection of the family,” and “unnatural sexual behavior,” are sometimes used as a basis for abuse by law enforcement officials. In addition, the law states that “no association may be founded for purposes against law and morality,” a clause which has been used by authorities in attempts to shut down or limit the activities of associations working on LGBTI matters.

See   our  LGBTI Travel Information   page and section 6 of our Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance:   The Turkish constitution prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities in the provision of state services, employment, education and access to health care. However, access to buildings and public transportation for the disabled in most cities is quite limited, and generally, accessibility for people with disabilities in Turkey is poor. Airports and metro stations are typically accessible, but other forms of public transport (buses) are not.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  The Embassy is aware of multiple sexual assaults against U.S. citizens in Turkey, including assaults against tourists traveling alone or in small groups, and at spas and  hamams.

  • If you are sexually assaulted, please seek immediate help from the Turkish National Police, Turkish Health Services, or nearest hospital if you feel safe doing so.
  • We urge you to contact the closest U.S. Embassy or Consulate for assistance.

See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

Earthquakes:  Earthquakes occur throughout Turkey. Make contingency plans and leave emergency contact information with family members outside Turkey. General information about natural disaster preparedness is available from the  U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)  and at  Ready.gov. Medical care provided in Turkish hospitals varies greatly. Though new private hospitals in Ankara, Antalya, Izmir and Istanbul have modern facilities, equipment, numerous U.S.-trained specialists, and international accreditation, some still may be unable to treat certain serious conditions. Health care standards are lower in small cities in Turkey.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance overseas.

We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance   to cover medical evacuation.

If traveling with prescription medication, check with the government of Turkey to ensure the medication is legal in Turkey. Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription. Some medications may be unavailable in Turkey.

For U.S. citizens who live in Turkey , please see the Embassy’s website for  information on the Turkish General Health Insurance (GHI) law . If you are considering enrolling in Turkish GHI, carefully research what is and is not covered. Once you enroll in GHI, your coverage can only be cancelled if your residence permit expires or if you no longer reside in Turkey.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Roads in Turkey range from single-lane country roads to modern, divided motorways. Highways in the tourist-frequented western, southwestern, and coastal regions of Turkey are generally in good condition and are well maintained, while conditions in other areas vary.

Be extremely cautious while driving at night.  Driving after dark, especially in rural areas, requires extra caution due to dangers such as livestock on the road or narrow unmarked or unpaved roads.

In case of an  accident  or  car trouble :

  • Pull to the side of the road, turn on hazard lights, and use reflector triangles.
  • For accidents with only vehicular damage, exchange insurance information, take photos of the accident before moving the vehicles, and depart if both sides agree. Turkish law requires drivers to fill out a Turkish-only form and provide pictures of the damage. Non-Turkish speakers should call and wait for the police.
  • For accidents with injury  or a disagreement, remain at the site of the accident.  Do not move the vehicle  – even out of the way – until the Traffic Police arrive. Report the accident to the Traffic Police (dial 155) or Jandarma (dial 156). Get a certified copy of the official report from the Traffic Police office (this can take several days).
  • The owner of the damaged vehicle should also apply to the customs authority with his passport and accident report before attempting to repair the vehicle or leave the country without the vehicle.
  • When in doubt, it is best to call the Traffic Police or the Jandarma in the event of an accident.

Traffic Laws:  Drive defensively at all times. Drivers routinely ignore traffic regulations, including driving through red lights and stop signs, and turning left from the far right lane. These and other similar driving practices cause frequent traffic accidents.

  • Penalties for  driving drunk  (blood alcohol levels at or above 0.05 percent) include a  fine  and the individual’s license being confiscated for  six months .
  • Using cell phones while driving is  illegal  and can lead to a  fine .

Driver’s license requirements include:

  • For stays up to 180 days : A valid U.S. driver’s license or an International Driving Permit and a U.S. driver’s license is acceptable.
  • For stays longer than 180 days : Obtain a Turkish driver’s license from the Turkish Security Directorate, Traffic Department (Emniyet Müdürlüğü, Trafik Hizmetleri Başkanlığı).
  • A vehicle can be brought into Turkey for up to six months. Find information at the Turkish Touring and Automobile Club.

Public Transportation:  Major cities in   Turkey have extensive public transportation options including taxis, subways, ferries, trains, buses and mini-buses. Licensed cabs are metered. Between cities, Turkey has bus routes, train, and air services.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information.

Aviation Safety Oversight:   The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Turkey’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Turkey’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel:  Mariners planning travel to Turkey should also check U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings website  - select “broadcast warnings”.

turkey multiple entry visit visa

AbhishekAn, You will need to get an evisa separately for each entry to Turkey because this visa single entry. " https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/ ". So you will need to have two evisas, one for each entry.

You will need to have a valid multiple entry Schengen or a valid multiple entry OECD member country visa, to qualify for the above visa online (you need to get the printout and carry it in your passport). Otherwise you will have to get regular Turkish visas from the Turkish Embassy in New Delhi (multiple entry).

enjoy Turkey,

We are not planning to go out of the airport. Do we still need multiple entry visa? Thanks again.

No you do not need a visa as long as you stay on the airside of the airport.

After April 10 there will no longer be visas-on-arrival for visitors. Therefore you should get an evisa in that case. However once again your Schengen visa to visit Greece must be multiple entry, because otherwise a single entry visa will expire the moment you enter Greece and you will have an invalid Schengen visa (not acceptable as an evisa requirement) on your hands when you arrive at Turkey.

Thanks Enigma.

Multiple Entry Schengen Visa

Multiple Entry Schengen Visa

If you have spent any time researching Schengen visas, you probably know by now that there are several different categories and types of visas allowing a degree of access to the Schengen area including multiple entry Schengen visa . If you are one of the would-be Schengen visa applicants who is overwhelmed by the sheer volume of Schengen visa terminology – don’t be discouraged! The process can at times seem overly complex. The purpose of today’s blog is therefore to reduce some of the confusion surrounding one of the Schengen visa types: a multiple entry Schengen visa. Read on for critical information about the Schengen multiple entry visa, the Schengen visa fee for multiple entry, and to learn the definitive answer to the question “what is multiple entry Schengen visa?”.

What is a Multiple Entry Visa?

The quick answer to the question “what is a multiple entry visa,” is that it’s a  type of Schengen visa that allows you to enter the Schengen area as many times as you want during your visa validity period . However, in order to really understand what “is multiple entry Schengen visa,” it’s important to first understand the various categories and types of Schengen visas in general.

Schengen Visa Categories

  • There are two main categories of Schengen visas: Uniform Schengen Visas (USVs) and Limited Territorial Visas (LTVs).
  • Uniform Schengen Visas allow you to access the whole Schengen area; all 26 Member States.
  • Limited Territorial Visas, in contrast, restrict your access to an individual state or states. For example, an LTV for France would only allow you to enter France, rather than any of the other 25 Member States
  • Multiple entry Schengen visas are ONLY obtainable for Uniform Schengen Visas.

Schengen Visa Types

  • There are, broadly, two main types of Schengen visas: Airport Transit (Type A) and Short Stay (Type C).
  • (Type A) Airport Transit visas are used exclusively by those who need to pass through airports located in the Schengen area.
  • Short Stay visas (Type C) allow you to enter and remain in the Schengen area for up to 90 days.
  • Multiple entry Schengen visas are obtainable exclusively for Short Stay (Type C) visas.

Schengen Visa Purposes

  • Another type of Schengen visa refers to the visa holder’s purpose for travelling. There are therefore several different purpose types you can select as your reason for travelling.
  • Schengen visa purpose types include Business Schengen visas, Medical Schengen visas, Cultural Schengen visas, and Visiting Family and Friends visas ( click here for a full list of Schengen visa types ).
  • Multiple entry Schengen visas are obtainable for all types of purposes.

In Summary:

  • You can get a Schengen multiple entry visa ONLY for Uniform Schengen Visas.
  • Multiple entry Schengen visas are available ONLY for Short Stay (Type C) visas
  • You can get a multiple entry Schengen visa for all types of Schengen purposes (Business, medical, etc).

Entries to the Schengen Area

  • Once you’ve selected your Schengen visa type and purpose, you can decide how many entries you need to the Schengen area.
  • Allows you just one entry to the Schengen area.
  • Once you enter the Schengen area on a single-entry visa, you cannot leave the area again unless you want your visa to be invalidated and you are ok with not being able to return.
  • Therefore, if you enter the Schengen area on a single-entry visa only to exit the area sometime during your visa validity period, you will not be allowed back into the area-even if you still have time left on your visa.
  • In this way, you are only allowed one, “single” entry to the Schengen area on a single-entry Schengen visa.
  • For example, say you had a single-entry Schengen visa to France. If you entered France and spent 30 days there, and then left the area to fly back home, you would not be able to reenter the Schengen area-even though you still theoretically would have 60 days left on your visa.
  • Allows you two entries to the Schengen area.
  • Once you enter the Schengen area on a double-entry visa, you CAN leave the area and re-enter it again during your visa validity period.
  • However, if you enter the Schengen area, leave the Schengen area, enter it again, and leave it for a second time, you will at that point not be allowed back into the Schengen area (for what would theoretically be your third entry), even if you still have more time left on you visa validity period.
  • For example, if you had a double-entry Schengen visa to France, you could enter France, spend 30 days there, leave France to fly home, and be allowed back into the country for your second entry. However, if having entered France twice, you exited the Schengen area for a third time, you would not be allowed back into to France (or to any country in the Schengen area) even if you still had time left on your visa.
  • Unlimited entries to the Schengen area.
  • See below for detailed information on multiple entry Schengen visas.
  • A multiple entry Schengen visa is therefore one of three types of Schengen entry visas.
  • A multiple entry Schengen visas is a type of visa allowing you to enter and exit the Schengen area an unlimited number of times during your visa validity period.
  • By allowing unlimited entries, a multiple Schengen visa is therefore in contrast to the single-entry Schengen visa as well as the double entry Schengen visa, both of which restrict the number of times you can enter and leave the area.
  • A multiple entry Schengen visa would therefore allow you to enter the Schengen area, leave the Schengen area, and re-enter it again as many times as you want during your visa validity period. In this way, a multiple entry Schengen visa is the most flexible and coveted Schengen visa.
  • For example, if you had a multiple entry Schengen visa for France, you could enter France and leave the Schengen area as many times as you wanted during your visa validity period.
  • Please don’t be confused: a multiple entry Schengen visa refers specifically to the number of times you can enter and return to the Schengen area. It does NOT have anything to do with the territory you are able to enter. A multiple entry Schengen visa is therefore not a Schengen visa for multiple countries (a Schengen visa for multiple countries would be a uniform visa, which gives you access to multiple (all) countries in the Schengen area).
  • Remember, if you have a multiple entry visa, you must be certain to obtain travel health insurance for, at minimum, the first period in which you will be present in the Schengen area

Schengen Visa Fee for Multiple Entry

  • Schengen visas of all different categories, kinds, and types all cost the same.
  • For example, a Schengen double-entry visa costs the same as a multiple entry visa; visas that allow fewer entries are the same price as those allowing more entries.
  • The basic price for a multiple Schengen visa is therefore €80 ( click here for more information on Schengen visa costs ).

Answers to basic questions about multiple entry visas:

  • 90 days within a 180-day period. Remember that all Short Term (type C) visas are valid for access to the Schengen for the same duration (90 days).

How much does a multiple-entry Schengen visa cost?

  • €80. Remember that all Schengen visas cost the same amount of money. Even though a multiple-entry visa allows you more flexibility, it is no more expensive than single or double entry visas.

Is a multiple-entry visa hard to get?

  • Somewhat. However, because it allows you to travel in and out of the Schengen area, someone who applies for a multiple-entry visa could theoretically be more scrutinized during the application process in comparison to someone who applies for a single entry.

Who needs a multiple entry visa?

  • You will need a multiple entry Schengen visa if you plan on travelling in and out of the Schengen area more than two times throughout your visa validity period.
  • Multiple entry visas are a good fit for people who are flying back and forth for businesses purposes between their home country and the Schengen area, or for anyone who doesn’t want to worry about the number of times they can enter and leave the Schengen area.
  • In summary, a multiple-entry Schengen visa provides peace of mind for travelers who want unlimited access to going in and out of the Schengen area.

Who is eligible for a multiple entry visa?

  • Anyone who needs a Schengen visa in order to enter the Schengen area, fulfills the Schengen visa requirements, has a valid passport, and is in good standing with the law is eligible to apply for a multiple entry visa to the Schengen area.
