We were so fortunate to be able to experience Milford Sound both in sunshine and in rain. Seeing cliffs transform into waterfalls overnight was totally breathtaking. Our crew were very experienced, knowledgeable and friendly, as well as being thoroughly entertaining. The cabin was comfortable and meals were delicious. A highlight of our South Island visit! Bglbudi via TripAdvisor
You can expect to see seals, dolphins, water birds and waterfalls in a true glacial fjord. Wildlife, small boat or kayaks launched from the ship. Overnight cruise was just amazing. Afternoon cruise up most of the Milford sound then anchored overnight and the next morning cruised up to the Tasman Sea then back to docks. Very nice buffet dinner and breakfast onboard. Small crew does triple duty to make sure everyone is well cared for onboard. Definitely recommend. SharrieKay via TripAdvisor
What a fantastic Milford experience! Brandon + Ben on the Milford Mariner's knowledge of Milford, its history, geology, glaciers and sea life gave us an enhanced understanding of this stunning, remote priceless wilderness. Can't thank you guys enough. Cabins on the Milford Marriner were comfortable, clean and well appointed, the food was excellent and plentiful. The dinghy ride in the sound, the 30+ Dolphin's swimming with the boat and the swim in the cool waters of Milford sound, were the stuff memories are made of. A big thanks to the Captain for allowing us to stand beside him in the Bridge as we sailed back. It was a wonderful day and overnight trip. Di Bellamy via TripAdvisor
We took   overnight   cruise on Milford Sound. Lots of waterfalls and wildlife, well mostly seals. We stood in the spray of the waterfall that is supposed to take 10 years from your appearance. It *could* be magic. Definitely worth the trip. SharrieKay Arizona via TripAdvisor

At Milford where do you park and go to check in for Overnight Cruises?

What is the Milford Sound Levy?

The Milford Sound Levy is paid to the Milford Sound Tourism authority and helps to maintain, preserve and develop the Fiord.  For more information, see the Milford Sound Tourism website .

Are linen and towels provided on the Milford and Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruises?

Yes, bedding and towels are provided to all guests.

Overnight Cruises and Quadshare - We are a group of three people and would like to book a shared quad-share room. Will this mean we would be sharing with another person?

Yes, you could potentially be sharing with another guest. Alternatively you could choose to pay for the entire quad cabin, or two double cabins, to ensure privacy.  If you wish to pay for an entire quad cabin, please contact us directly.

What weather can I expect in Fiordland?

Fiordland’s weather is what gives the region its unique character. Rainfall is what makes Fiordland a land of lakes, rivers, streams, waterfalls and fiords. Visitors should always be prepared to enjoy some rainfall during their stay. It is recommended to bring sensible clothing for cool and wet weather to fully appreciate your stay.

The temperatures you can expect in the different seasons are as follows:

  • Summer  (December-February) 19-23 Celsius / 66 - 73 Fahrenheit
  • Autumn  (March-May) 8-18 Celsius / 46  - 64 Fahrenheit
  • Winter  (June-August) 5-9 Celsius /  41  - 48 Fahrenheit
  • Spring  (September-November) 10-19 Celsius  / 50   - 66 Fahrenheit

Is it worth going to Milford/Doubtful Sounds on a wet day?

Many say you have not seen Fiordland unless you have seen it in the rain.  When it rains in Fiordland the landscape is dramatic - rock faces stream with waterfalls, mist hangs around the tops of the mountains and rivers and streams rage.  From a dry comfortable vantage point on the bus or boat, this landscape is spectacular for sightseeing.

While we cannot guarantee you will see wildlife, sightings of fur seals are reasonably common in both Doubtful and Milford Sounds.  A pod of bottlenose dolphins resides in Doubtful Sound so you have a good chance of seeing these fascinating mammals, and in Milford Sound dolphins are occasional visitors.  In both sounds the rare Fiordland crested penguin can at times be observed.

How much luggage can I take on my overnight cruise?

We recommend each passenger brings no more than a carry-on sized bag due to space restrictions in the cabins. For a list of what to bring please see the 'more info' section or your booking confirmation.

There is limited luggage storage available at the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal.

What is the difference between a double room and a twin room?

A double room is a private room for two people, with one bed to share. A twin room is a private room for two people, with two single beds.

Your travel agent or the outlet where you purchased your Milford Sound trip will refund the flight component of your ticket.  You will return to Queenstown by  coach.

What is the difference between Milford and Doubtful Sounds?

milford sound cruise klook

Our places. Our experiences. Milford and Doubtful Sounds, NZ.

Milford Sound at the mountainous north end of Fiordland National Park is the classic fiord - a deep water inlet between steep sided high mountains.  Milford Sound is a middle-sized fiord at around 13 kms in length and it is famous for its dramatic scenery, especially Mitre Peak.  This fiord is the most accessible of Fiordland National Park’s 14 fiords and it can be reached by bus, car or flight connections from Queenstown.

Doubtful Sound is located in the heart of Fiordland National Park where the mountains are still very impressive but not as high as Milford Sound.  Doubtful Sound is three times longer and  has a sea surface area roughly ten times larger than Milford Sound.  Its three arms are Hall, Crooked and First Arm.  It is famous for its wilderness scenery and wildlife sightings.  To get to Doubtful Sound visitors first take a launch trip across Lake Manapouri and drive over Wilmot Pass.

Visitors with enough time choose to visit both fiords as they have different characters.

What are the driving conditions to Milford like in the winter?

Driving conditions during winter (May to September) can be difficult.  Extreme care is needed as freezing temperatures mean the road can ice over in shaded places.  During the winter it is  mandatory  to carry snow chains in your vehicle as the road can sometimes be covered in snow.  These are available for hire from petrol stations in Te Anau and Queenstown.

If you are not confident about driving in winter conditions then take a RealNZ  coach  to Milford Sound so you can relax and take in the stunning scenery.

Throughout Fiordland the fiords are officially mapped as sounds.  Strictly speaking, they should be called fiords.

A fiord is a glaciated valley - typically narrow and steep-sided - that has been flooded by the sea after the glacier’s retreat.  A sound, on the other hand, is a river valley flooded by the sea following a rise in sea levels or depression of the land, or a combination of both.

Online transactions/prices are conducted in what currency?

All prices and transactions on the RealNZ website are in New Zealand dollars (NZD).  This is specified on the Terms & Conditions page.

What happens if there is an emergency?

Our staff are trained to deal with incidents and in case of an emergency you should listen to their instructions. We have a portable defibrillator on each of our overnight cruise vessels (Milford Mariner, Milford Wanderer and Fiordland Navigator). In addition to this we also have portable defibrillators at the following locations: •    Milford Sound Visitor Terminal •    RealNZ Visitor Centre, Manapouri •    Cavern House (Te Anau Glowworm Caves) •    Colonel’s Homestead Restaurant, Walter Peak •    TSS Earnslaw Vintage Steamship •    Stewart Island Ferry (Bluff - Oban - Bluff)

Can my dietary requirements be accommodated?

Yes, dietary requirements can be catered for. Please provide detailed information regarding your dietary requirements when making a booking.

Is the boat accessible for individuals with impaired mobility?

When we are informed in advance about guests with hindered mobility, we make every effort to mitigate the impact by assigning rooms in proximity to the main areas. However, it’s important to note that our vessels are not optimally equipped for potential needs. While we extend a warm welcome to individuals with impaired mobility, all our vessel’s doorways feature a sea sill, there are no ramps within the boat, and a flight of stairs separates rooms from the main saloon.

Award-winning singapore lifestyle & travel blog, new zealand milford sound cruise – tips and experience.

July 19, 2022 by Angie. S 1 Comment

Is Milford Sound worth a visit? How do I get there? Is it better to drive or join a tour? These were some of the questions we asked when planning our self-drive road trip to South Island, New Zealand. We hope that our sharing will help you in your trip-planning.

Milford Sound, carved out from ancient glaciers, is adorned with towering peaks and cascading waterfalls. It is widely considered to be one of the most scenic places in the world. It’s no surprise that the famous novelist and traveler, Rudyard Kipling, calls it “The 8 th Wonder of the World”.

‘ To Drive or Not to Drive’ :

Getting to Milford Sound requires advanced planning. Here’s what we gleaned from the locals we spoke to.

milford sound cruise klook

  • Wet. Wet. Wet.: Milford Sound is one of the wettest places in the world, averaging 186 days of rainfall in a year.  This makes the winding roads through the hilly region wrought with risk of landslides, fallen trees and flood.  A recent flood in February 2020 caused scores of tourists to be stranded overnight as the incessant rain caused the river to swell.

milford sound cruise klook

  • Highway 94: State Highway 94 the only accessible route to reach Milford Sound.  It is a 250+ km of narrow, winding highway that meanders through the hills with tunnels and single lane roads due to ongoing roadworks.  Needless to say, driving along this winding road gets riskier when night falls. Moreover, being the only accessible route to Milford Sound means also that this road gets really busy (think locals, tourists, trucks etc.) during peak tourist season (esp. Summer). Many tourists have missed their cruise departures because they fail to anticipate the jams along this route.

milford sound cruise klook

  • No Signal and Internet!: Tourists who plan to self-drive to Milford Sound should plan for the possibility of getting stranded in this hilly region without any means of communication as data signals and WIFI tend to be weak. Road works to install new-generation fiber optic cables to Milford Sound have been delayed by the pandemic and we were told may take few more years to complete.  Local residents and drivers hence carry satellite phones to establish essential communication, especially in adverse weather.

milford sound cruise klook

  • Where to Join a Milford Sound Tour?  So weighing the risks, we’ve decided not to self-drive to Milford Sound but to join a ‘ Coach and Cruise’ Tour so that Daddy can relax and enjoy the trip too. The next decision is to decide where from. There are 2 options: from Queenstown or from Te Anau. The one way drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound is about 4 hours so the coaches pick up passengers in Queenstown as early as 7am. After the cruise ends at 5pm, it’s another 4 hour drive back to Queenstown. This can be an extremely long day for families with young kids.

milford sound cruise klook

  • To reduce the travelling time sitting inside the coach, we decided to self-drive 2 hrs from Queenstown to Te Anau, spend a night in 5-star lakefront accommodation, Radfords On The Lake, Te Anau before joining the Milford Sound Tour with Southern Discoveries .  We took advantage of our stay in Te Anau to explore the Glowworm caves as well.

Milford Sound Coach and Cruise Tour

Technically, Milford Sound is a fjord but it’s spectacular nonetheless (reminded us of our trip in Norway!) Our Coach and Cruise Tour operated by Southern Discoveries , was booked via Kloo k from the comfort of our home. We boarded a glass-roofed coach from Te Anau at 9.30am and were pleasantly surprised it came with free WiFi and USB charging ports. The coach was very clean and comfy. All of us could relax and listen to the commentary during the drive to Milford Sound Ferry Terminal.

Here’s sharing some insights of the Cruise:

  • Wet. Wet. Wet: Be prepared to get wet on the cruise. Not only are you visiting one of the wettest places on earth, the cruise actually brings us up close to at least one of the majestic waterfalls. Hence best to come prepared in water resistant jackets or with a ponchos. Having a water resistant gadget to capture videos and photos will be quite essential too.
  • Windy Windy Windy: One of the highlights of the cruise is to go to the open deck to take in the stunning scenery. However it is very very windy. Scarves, beanies, caps and small gadgets can be blown off with virtually no chance of retrieval.  Either have them securely strapped to your hands or wound safely around the neck. Consider yourself warned.
  • Motion? While waters on the fjord is generally not too choppy, the ferry resembles one from our local ferry ride to nearby Batam, and can be susceptible to some moderate waves generated by the weather.  So for those who are sensitive to motion sickness, best to come prepared with medication.
  • Warm Up and Chow Down: The cruise does offer free coffee and tea to passengers (good!) and for a small fee, they do provide a simple picnic lunchbox which comprises of cookies, sandwich and muffin. This is helpful especially since there is no snack stops along the coach ride.

  • Sights and Sounds All Around:   The coach ride with Southern Discoveries was really pleasant. It stops as some key scenic photo spots for us to stretch our legs and catch some stunning local sights.  The glass-roofed coach gave us a slightly more immersive experience admiring the scenery whilst on the go. The driver also provided very useful commentary. Worthy experience!

Dana writes: Have a read at what the daughter thinks about the Milford Sound Tour:

“Some of the most memorable spots that we stopped en-route to take the cruise were the Mirror Lake, where we took beautiful photos of the mountains’ reflections in the lake and the Monkey Creek where we spotted the Kea, an endangered bird in NZ. We also drank alpine water from the creek which was absolutely refreshing.”

“During the cruise, I spent most of my time on the Upper Deck enjoying the fresh air and cool winds. My family members occasionally joined me to take in the view. My favourite part of the cruise was when the boat went extremely close to one of the huge waterfalls, and I got splashed, which according to a local myth, say would make us look 10 years younger! I did feel more youthful after the refreshing sprays of water! I would highly encourage you to purchase the meals as well when booking the cruise, as the journey is pretty long, and all that sightseeing made us hungry. I made a friend on the cruise, Grace who hails from Auckland. Grace suggested more places to add to my growing list of places to go to in New Zealand. Overall, the Milford Sound Cruise is definitely one that you cannot miss!”

Milford Sound stands out as among one of the most beautiful places we have visited as a family. The Southern Discoveries Coach and Cruise Tour through the towering peaks and sailing on the emerald green waters is truly a beautiful way to know New Zealand. Highly recommended!

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
