Picture Perfect: How to Photograph Cars at Night
Ever wanted some mysterious, cinematic night photos of your ride? Victoria Scott explains how to get started.

reimuracing
If you've ever gotten off of work and wanted to take some solid shots of your pride and joy , but the sun had already gone down, I wouldn't blame you for writing off the day. The beams of the sun, especially within an hour of its rise and set, are absolutely the easiest to work with for any kind of photography. Throw in one of the most difficult subjects in photography—a large, hard-to-artificially light, two-ton hunk of steel and glass—and you'd be forgiven for just heading to bed at twilight.
But with a little creativity and some lighting tips, the long, dark hours of the night can be just as creatively fruitful as any part of the daytime. My night photography got a fair amount of attention during the Vanscontinental Express series last year, and I've gotten even more into this year with my full-time move to the Nevada desert. I'm not a trained professional, but I've been growing my skills as a hobbyist for over a decade now. So, I decided it was well past time to put together a guide for taking nighttime shots of your car like a... well, like a semi-pro at least.
1. B.A.T. (Bring a Tripod)
The first and perhaps easiest way to take night shots, of course, is to break out a tripod.
Shot #1: Use Some Headlights
Gear really does not matter for a tripod, as long as you're persistent. I have a nice Manfrotto nowadays, but I used to stack my Nikon on top of a couple of milk crates or a pile of books; the most important thing to remember is not to touch the camera once the shutter is open. Any wobbling will cause faint areas of the picture to blur and muddy the overall shot. Remote shutter release cables—the kind that allows you to trigger the camera without touching it—or a self-timer help immensely with this.
To get the kind of light shown in this picture, you'll need to have a long exposure. For the above shot, I took a single 6.2-second long exposure at a relatively low ISO sensitivity and timed the shutter so that an oncoming car's headlights would add shadows and depth to the tires and rear of my van . The moon was nearly full in this picture, which helped illuminate the background mountains nicely, and shooting under the moon has helped me consistently in areas where I don't have natural light. The oncoming headlights shining on the van just give that extra oomph, and it was worth waiting for a car to head by to take this photo.
Shot #2: Stack Multiple Photos
Let's say there's no traffic, like on the empty roads in the most remote stretches of the lonely Nevada desert , which I now call home. With no headlights, streetlamps, or other lights out in the wilderness, you'll need to use a longer exposure time to get the shot you want.
For example, this shot above is the equivalent of 35 seconds long, taken under a waxing gibbous moon (about three-fourths full). However, instead of taking one single 35-second-long shot, I chose instead to take seven five-second exposures and digitally stacked them (using Lightroom, but this can be done with any HDR photo merging software) into a single photo. By doing this, I was able to capture the night sky without having the rotation of the planet turn the stars into blurred streaks.
If I hadn't stacked my photos, the sky would have looked like this:
Shot #3: ...Or Just Take One Long One
This shot is a single, 220-second long exposure. Because the shutter was open for so long, the Earth rotated enough to blur the stars into lines. This is a perfectly valid stylistic choice to make, but I tend to like clean points of light for my stars, so my more recent work under starry skies has been stacked exposures, rather than single long shots.
Regardless of the style I use, I always try to make sure there's some sort of light source that will emphasize the vehicle. In shot No. 1, I left the van's headlights on; in shot No. 2, I used the interior van roof light; in shot No. 3, I shined a weak flashlight on the van itself.
No matter which method you use, making sure that some part of the vehicle is lit, even dimly, will help draw viewers' eyes to the subject: your ride.
2. Or, Don't Bring A Tripod
If you want to take night photos in a place where it's impractical to plop down a tripod, though—the middle of a street, let's say—it can still be done!
Shot #4: Head Towards the Light...
This shot required me to be fast. The car wasn't parked in an actual parking spot, and I had to stand in the middle of a downtown street to capture it—certainly not a place I'd feel comfortable plunking down a tripod—so I simply hand-held the camera. The illumination is provided by the streetlamps I parked the car between, positioning the rear of the Porsche closer to the streetlight behind so that the iconic fastback silhouette would be lit the most prominently. For hand-held shots, your ISO will need to be much higher and your shutter speed will be much shorter than the tripod-taken photos, or you won't be able to hold the camera still enough to prevent shakiness.
(And remember, if you do decide to shoot photos in the road, ensure that you check both ways, and if any traffic is near, you wait for a safe moment. A good shot isn't worth getting hurt for.)
In this picture, I used ISO 1600, which adds considerably more digital noise to the shot, but with editing in modern denoising software, the end result can still be sharp enough for printing. Or, alternatively, you can leave the noise as an artistic element! Some people like the grainy look it adds.
I can personally hand-hold the camera at about 1/30th of a second fairly easily, but if you are unable to hold it steady enough for a crisp shot, don't worry too much. Speed up the shutter until you can get crisp, sharp photos, and raise the ISO to compensate for the shorter exposure. It's easier to remove digital noise in post-processing than it is to make a blurry shot look good.
Shot #5: ...Or Add Drama
Even if a decent streetlight source isn't available, there's still hope. The ambient light for this shot was very low—the nearest streetlights were over 40 feet away from the car—but the repeating patterns and colors of the motel and the randomly parked '90s Mercury made this spot a can't-miss for me. Again, I stood in the middle of a four-lane city street, so I had to hand-hold the camera to take this photo. Despite the lack of illumination, the outlines of the Porsche against the motel, combined with the 912E's corner lights, made it stand out enough that I ended up with a dramatic, interesting scene.
With a poorly lit shot like this, well-planned editing will help significantly. To help the Porsche stand out a bit, I increased the saturation (color) and luminance (light) of yellow in the photo, while intentionally darkening the blue-hued shadows in the photo. This helped the car's silhouette pop from the foreground pavement.
3. Remember: Colors Are a Lie
The last thing I love to keep in mind for night shots is that colors can be deceptive. Your camera sensor will do its best to capture whatever light is around, but rarely will it capture what the scene felt like as you took it, and the shadows of the evening hours are the best place to express creative freedom. The first shot is as-taken (as a RAW photo, to allow me full color-editing freedom). The second shot is after I'd edited it.
The final version has a whole host of color editing applied to it—custom white balance and tint, color grading, individual hue tweaks—but most importantly, it still looks like a scene that feels real, albeit a bit stylized. The beauty of any city at night is that with so many different color tones and competing light sources, nearly any hue or color blend imaginable can be made to look right in the final product. The freedom offered by the artificial glow of the evening is an absolute joy to work with in editing software because you truly have complete control over the final product.
Shot #7: Just Try It!
No matter what styles or methods you try, it doesn't mean you have to put the camera away just because the sun sets. Best of luck under the moonlit skies and neon-drenched city streets, and happy shooting!

Photographing your car at night using long-exposure techniques is a captivating way to showcase the beauty, power, and elegance of your vehicle. Long-exposure photography allows you to create mesmerizing images that highlight the play of light, emphasize details, and craft a mood that's hard to achieve during daylight hours. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the art of capturing awesome photos of your car at night using long-exposure photography techniques.
Equipment and preparation
Peak Design Travel Tripod - $379.99
$379.99 at Amazon
Before you head out to capture those breathtaking nighttime car shots, it's important to have the right equipment and be prepared for the shooting session:
- Camera : Use a digital camera that supports manual mode settings and long-exposure capability. A DSLR or mirrorless camera is ideal for this type of photography.
- Lens : A wide-angle lens is generally preferred for car photography to capture the entire car and its surroundings. However, a prime lens with a larger aperture can also work wonders for isolating specific details.
- Peak Design Travel Tripod : A sturdy tripod is essential to keep your camera steady during long exposures and avoid camera shake. The Peak Design model shown above is hands down the best travel tripod I've ever used, and I've used plenty. It is lightweight at under 3.5 pounds for the aluminum version I use, packs down to the size of a water bottle and has more features than any of my other travel tripods. It comes in both aluminum and carbon fiber.
- Remote shutter release : Using a remote shutter release or the camera's built-in timer can further eliminate camera shake caused by pressing the shutter button.
- A light or flashlight : A flashlight can be handy for painting light onto specific areas of the car during the exposure.
- Location scouting : Research potential locations for shooting. Look for interesting backgrounds, well-lit areas, and unique angles.
Mastering the settings
Understanding and mastering the camera settings is crucial for achieving exceptional nighttime car photos:
- Manual mode : Switch your camera to manual mode so you have full control over settings like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.
- Low ISO : Start with a low ISO setting (e.g., ISO 100 or 200) to reduce noise in your images.
- Aperture : I use a variety of apertures depending on what I want the shot to look like. Using a mid-range aperture (e.g., f/8 to f/11) ensures both the car and the background remain sharp.
- Shutter speed : This is where the magic happens. For long-exposure shots, set the shutter speed to a few seconds or even minutes. Experiment with different durations to get the desired effect.
Composition and framing
The composition plays a pivotal role in the visual appeal of your nighttime car photos:
- Foreground and background : Incorporate interesting foreground elements and background settings to enhance the overall scene.
- Leading lines : Utilize roads, bridges, or other elements to guide the viewer's eyes toward the car.
- Rule of thirds : Apply the rule of thirds to balance the car and its surroundings for a visually pleasing composition.
- Reflections : Utilize reflective surfaces, such as puddles or wet pavement, to add dimension and drama to your shot.
Light painting
Lume cube 2.0 - $89.99.
$89.99 at Amazon
Light painting involves using a flashlight or other light source to selectively illuminate certain areas of the car during a long exposure. For this, I use the Lume Cube 2.0 light pictured above. It is packed full of features, including a specific long-exposure mode, is waterproof, so I don't have to worry about it out in the weather and can be controlled by my phone via Bluetooth.
- Technique : With a long exposure in progress, use a flashlight to "paint" light onto specific parts of the car. This highlights details and adds depth to the image.
- Experimentation : Try different angles, intensities, and colors of light to create unique effects.
Safety and etiquette
While capturing stunning nighttime car photos, safety and respect for the environment are paramount:
- Safety : Always be cautious of your surroundings. Avoid shooting in busy traffic areas and prioritize safety at all times.
- Minimal disturbance : Be mindful of noise levels in residential areas and avoid disturbing the peace while shooting.
Post-processing
After capturing your shots, a touch of post-processing can further enhance their impact:
- Noise reduction : Use noise reduction tools to mitigate noise that might have crept in due to longer exposures.
- Color correction : Adjust the color temperature and tones to achieve the desired mood and atmosphere.
- Contrast and sharpening : Enhance contrast and apply sharpening subtly to make your image pop.
Mastering long-exposure photography for nighttime car shots is a rewarding journey that allows you to showcase your vehicle's beauty in a whole new light — literally. By combining the right equipment, camera settings, composition techniques, and post-processing skills, you'll be well on your way to capturing awe-inspiring images that showcase your car's elegance, power, and allure against the backdrop of the night. Remember to practice, experiment, and above all, enjoy the process of creating automotive art that tells a story all its own.

Fear of crime can make you wary of walking or traveling at night. But being uneasy doesn’t mean you need to stay home and miss the good times with your friends. Being prepared, planning your route, and knowing what to do in an emergency will make your night out safe, as well as fun.
Being Prepared
- You can also download an app such as FindMyFriends that allows you to share your location with others, as well as find friends nearby. Several of these apps also contain ways to quickly broadcast your location in an emergency situation. [2] X Research source
- Pepper spray needs a little practice to use correctly. Get comfortable using your thumb to push the button so you can hold the canister securely in the palm of your hand with the other four fingers. Learn how to unlock the safety switch quickly. Practice a few times with your canister to learn how far away you can stand and still reach your target. Some sprays can reach up to ten feet. [6] X Research source
Getting to Your Destination
- Many cities and universities provide free shuttles around town to popular restaurants and clubs. Using this option provides a safe way to get to and from your destination. Another popular option with college students is a "call a buddy" system that has volunteers on-call to walk you home.
- Be confident but don’t attract the wrong kind of attention. Flashy jewelry, large purses, expensive clothing and attention-grabbing antics can make you a target.
- You don’t want to be distracted by chatting on your phone when walking, but it can sometimes make you feel safer to talk to someone when you are alone so they know where you are. Just make sure the conversation allows you to keep track of those around you.
- Park in well-lit areas, as well. If it is still light when you park, visualize what the area will look like in the dark when you return. Look for overhead lights and park there. Always take note of where you park so that you can easily find your car. [11] X Research source
Handling an Emergency
Adrian Tandez
Fight instead of cooperating. Adrian Tandez, a self defense expert, says: “Never cooperate with your captors. If someone says, “Do what I tell you, and I won’t hurt you,” don’t believe them . They will get what they want from you no matter what. You need to fight as hard as you can and run away.”
- Telling people what to do is more effective than yelling something like, “Fire.” Instead, yell, “I’m being attacked – call 911!” Or yell directly at the attacker: “Get your hand off me!” or even just “Stop!”
Expert Q&A
- Avoid anyone who looks suspicious. It’s better to hurt someone’s feelings than find yourself with someone dangerous. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
- If you feel that you're being followed, look around and make it clear that you know someone is there. In this situation, try to direct your route to an area where there are more people or a place you know well. Turn everyday objects into last-minute combat tools. You can make Wolverine-like claws with your keys In between your fingers and be ready to fight or flee if someone ends up attacking you. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
- Look confident, even if you aren't. Criminals prey on those who look vulnerable. Behaviors that make you look submissive, such as slouching and shuffling your feet, make you an easy target. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
- Avoid suspicious-looking people, such as individuals covering their faces, individuals loitering, and people in dark streets and alleyways. Thanks Helpful 14 Not Helpful 0
- Never enter unsafe neighborhoods if you can avoid it. If there is a safe route that takes longer compared to a short but dangerous route, take the safer one. Saving your life is better than saving time. Thanks Helpful 15 Not Helpful 1
- Never look down at your phone when out at night. This gives the impression that you aren't paying attention to your surroundings and makes you a good target. This includes talking on the phone to a friend while you walk. Thanks Helpful 15 Not Helpful 2

Take a look inside 'The Beast,' the $1.5 million bulletproof presidential limousine used by Trump and Biden
- US presidents are driven in a heavily armored limousine nicknamed "The Beast."
- It features a secure communications system and fridge stocked with the president's blood type.
- Military cargo aircraft transport the presidential limousine for use abroad.
When US presidents aren't flying on Air Force One or taking helicopter trips in Marine One , they're driven around in a presidential limousine nicknamed "The Beast."
Weighing in at 20,000 pounds and outfitted with advanced security and communications systems, the newest model of "The Beast" debuted during the Trump administration in 2018.
Take a look inside the famous vehicle.
US presidents travel in a secure limousine nicknamed "The Beast."
US presidents rode Lincoln limousines for most of the 20th century until the 1980s, when the Reagan administration switched to Cadillacs.
The latest model of the presidential limousine was commissioned by the US Secret Service in 2014 and used for the first time in 2018 by President Donald Trump.
Designed to look like a longer version of a Cadillac XT6, the chassis of the car is actually that of a Chevrolet Kodiak truck produced by General Motors, NBC News reported. The vehicle weighs around 20,000 pounds and cost around $1.5 million to build.
The heavily armored vehicle is bulletproof, blast-resistant, and sealed to withstand biochemical attacks.
While details about the limousine's security measures remain classified, NBC News reported that the vehicle features a night-vision system, tear gas firing capabilities, and door handles that can be electrified to prevent intruders.
The windows are believed to be 3 inches thick and the vehicle's armor around 8 inches thick.
"The Beast" is also equipped with medical supplies, including a refrigerator stocked with the president's blood type.
The limousine's secure communications system is able to dispatch the launch codes for nuclear weapons.
The presidential seal appears throughout the design of the car.
The seal, featuring an eagle holding an olive branch and 13 arrows in its talons below a banner reading "E Pluribus Unum" (" Out of many, one"), appears on both the interior and exterior of the passenger door.
The limousine can seat up to seven people.
The interior features water bottle holders and plush leather seats. Previous presidential limousines have also included a fold-out desk, according to the US Secret Service .
"The Beast" travels with the president.
Presidential limousines are transported by military cargo aircraft, such as US Air Force C-17s, for use during the president's travels, according to the US Secret Service.
When abroad, the presidential limousine flies the American flag and the flag of the host country.
When Biden visited the UK in June 2021, the presidential limousine flew both the American flag and the Union Jack.
On Inauguration Day, Secret Service agents change the car's license plates as a new president takes power.
Some presidents have used the Washington, DC, "End Taxation Without Representation" license plates, while others have removed the slogan, Axios reported.
Accompanied by the presidential motorcade, "The Beast" remains an instantly recognizable symbol of the power of the presidency.
"It is safe to say that this car's security and coded communications systems make it the most technologically advanced protection vehicle in the world," the assistant director for the US Secret Service's Office of Protective Operations said of "The Beast, " according to the US Secret Service's official website.

Tornado tears through Grand Blanc amid storms: What we know
No injuries reported after tornado touches down in genesee county.
Kayla Clarke , Senior Web Producer
GRAND BLANC, Mich. – A tornado tore through Grand Blanc overnight into Wednesday morning, knocking down large trees and rupturing gas lines.
According to the National Weather Service, the tornado is rated at EF-2 and peak winds reached 115 miles per hour. It touched down at 1:12 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, traveled for 5.7 miles, and ended at 1:22 a.m.
It touched down in Creasey Bicentennial Park, damaging the south pavilion and uprooting a pine tree. It moved east northeast across Westminster Circle, snapping multiple trees, blowing out two garage doors, and partially stripping a roof from a home. It continued east northeast across Porter Road and Reid Road, snapping multiple limbs and trees.
Update: National Weather Service confirms EF-2 tornado touched down in Grand Blanc
Grand Blanc city police officers reported seeing the tornado from their patrol cars. The tornado knocked down large trees, which damaged several homes in the Indian Hill and Kings Pointe subdivisions and ruptured several gas lines. Debris from damaged buildings were scattered and thrown.
Grand Blanc city fire crews evacuated several residents to the fire department. Consumers energy responded to the ruptured gas lines and were able to make repairs before residents were allowed to return home.
City officials said several residential and commercial buildings were significantly damaged and many people were left without power. There was a gas main break from a commercial building off Dort Highway. Gas was shut off at 9:40 a.m.
Residents are being asked to avoid Dort Highway between Grand Blanc Road and Reid Road, Reid Road between Porter Road and Grand Oak Drive, and Creasey Bicentennial Park.
Police said no injuries have been reported.

How the National Weather Service determines the scale of a tornado
The National Weather Service uses the EF Scale to rate a tornado based on wind speeds and damage.
The Enhanced Fujita Scale (EF Scale) has been used since 2007 and the National Weather Service is the only federal agency with the authority to provide an official EF Scale rating of a tornado.
When the NWS surveys damage from a tornado officials compare the damage to a list of Damage Indicators (DIs) and Degrees of Damage (DoD), which help them estimate the range of wind speeds the tornado likely produced.
The EF scale is a set of wind estimates, not measurements, based on damage. It uses three-second gusts estimated at the point of damage based on a judgment of 8 levels of damage to 28 indicators.
Damage Indicators include barns, homes, mobile homes, motels, fast food restaurants, shopping malls, schools, hardwood trees, softwood trees, and many more.
After the range of wind speeds is determined, they assign an EF-0 to EF-5 rating. The goal is to give the tornado an EF Scale rating based on the highest wind speed that occurred within the damage path.

Aside from requiring a lot more gear, traveling with kids can be quite stressful, and in between packing your luggage and investing in a travel stroller , there's little mental energy for anything else. Fortunately our experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute Parenting Lab have been testing car seats for decades, including the best convertible car seats and the best booster seats . We test based on safety features, functionality, ease of use and value. Our picks are based on tests done in-Lab by our experts, evaluations from our consumer testers and extensive research.
Head to the end of this guide to find more information on how we test, whether or not you should use a car seat on a plane, what to look for when shopping for the best portable car seats and more. Looking for more to make traveling with kids as easy as possible? Check out our favorite outdoor-ready stroller wagons , good diaper bags and the winners of our Family Travel Awards .
The Doona car seat is our pick for the best overall car seat and stroller combo and it's one of our past Parenting Award Winners . A dedicated fan following backs it up; see its more than 12,000 five-star reviews on Amazon. The Doona makes it easy to switch between car seat and stroller mode in seconds even with your baby strapped inside. In short, you don't need a separate infant car seat and a stroller, because this is both.
"It's the easiest stroller to maneuver through airport security and around an airport terminal," says one tester who's a mom of two young kids. It goes into a rideshare vehicle using the seat belt (no stroller to put in the trunk!). It's also FAA-approved for use in an airplane cabin and fits on most economy airplane seats, which are often about 17 inches wide.
Rachel Rothman , the Good Housekeeping Institute's former Chief Technologist and a mom of three, is a fan of this for travel. But it's important to note that, as well as being pricey, the Doona is only for rear-facing use and for toddlers up to 35 pounds. Toddlers outgrow it typically at age 2. But if you'll travel a lot in those first two years — even if it's just catching Ubers around town — you'll be grateful for the Doona.
Big kids need a bit of help ensuring that the seatbelt is hitting their body just right, so this backless booster gives them that extra height. It's also exceptionally small, lightweight and easy to travel with; you might even keep several in your car's trunk for when you're carpooling other kids. Because it's backless, it doesn't offer as much support as a highback booster (for that, see the Peg Perego on this list). It is okayed for ages 4 and up as long as they weigh at least 40 pounds and could be great for a quick trip when you don't want to lug something large. This fits into a tote bag!
With its two hideaway cupholders, machine-washable seat cushions and padded armrests, this tucks a lot of features into a (really!) affordable seat. It's no surprise that it has more than 59,000 five-star reviews on Amazon. While it isn't airline approved — all booster seats require a shoulder belt, which you won't find on an airplane — its compact size makes it incredibly simple to slide into your overhead bin to later use in taxis, Ubers or other vehicles once you get to your destination. For a little more money there's a TurboBooster LX version that works with LATCH; nice if you'll be keeping this in one car for a length of time.
Got enough to carry already? At 10 pounds, this is the best lightweight convertible car seat for traveling and it won't break the bank. Five harness heights and three buckle locations help customize the seat to your baby or toddler's size, though it's the kind of harness you have to rethread each time you need to change it. The Scenera can be installed rear-facing for babies and toddlers and forward-facing for preschoolers up to 40 pounds but lacks the cushioning and other comforts, like a recline mechanism, we've come to enjoy in an everyday toddler car seat . Still, with its deep bucket seat, this will keep your tiny passenger comfy enough and car seat compliant when you're traveling and in and out of other people's vehicles. It's especially great as a rear-facing travel option for 2- and 3-year-olds who have outgrown an infant car seat.
You can remove both the cupholder and seat pad for washing. The seat pad can even go in the dryer. The brand claims that three of these seats fit across a back seat and our tests were able to validate that in certain vehicles. It can be installed with the LATCH system or a seatbelt. It's approved for airplane seats and like our best overall pick it fits on most economy seats.
Kids who are at least age 4 and who weigh 40 pounds or more will appreciate the comfort of this belt-positioning booster seat just as much as parents will appreciate its ability to fold down to a fraction of its size. The Flex 120 has an exceptionally large weight range, functioning for kids up to — you guessed it — 120 pounds. While it's a bit pricier than some other booster options, its ability to compact down makes it perfect for folding up and storing in a bag that you can then gate-check, or even fit into the overhead bin while in-flight. Note that no belt-positioning booster is certified for use in an airplane cabin because they're meant to be used with a car's shoulder belt, not an airplane lap belt. The big kids who fit this are good to use the airplane belt anyway! This is perfect for use in a rideshare, taxi or a far-off relative's vehicle when you land.
Customize this booster to your child by adjusting the headrest, upper backrest, side wings and seat. In addition to being an easy portable car seat, this is another great choice for grandparents or other caregivers who only occasionally drive big kids around because it so easily fits into a car's trunk when not in use.
This is larger and heavier than any of our other choices. However, this is the most portable all-in-one car seat that grows with your little one from a rear-facing infant car seat to a backless booster, from 4 to 120 pounds . Its versatility means that it may be the only car seat you ever have to buy, and if you travel infrequently, you could manage to tote this on a few trips and avoid buying something separate just for travel. It is certified to work on an airplane seat with the harness (so, up to 65 pounds), but it's about 3 inches wider than many economy airplane seats so the fit isn't great; one Reddit user said they put it in the window seat and then just accepted squeezing themselves into the middle-seat position.
While testing, we appreciated how easy this car seat was to install and use, making it pretty difficult to mess up due to user error. We also love how highly adjustable it is, with a six-position recline and a no-rethread harness with 10 possible heights. The easy-to-remove washable seat pads make it simple to clean up after your little one. If you're taking it with you into a rideshare and can't use the LATCH installation system, there's an integrated belt lock off on the back of the seat that helps make seat belt installation as simple as possible.
This is a pricey option that has a fan following with frequent travelers who travel with a preschooler. It folds down into its own carrying case, which can be worn as a backpack, so you can easily get it through the airport and store it in a hotel. It's got a five-point harness and is meant for kids up to 50 pounds. The brand says it's for kids as young as 2 but because rear-facing is safest and this only faces forward, we would not recommend using it for a child until they are at least age 3, preferably 4.
The Pico does not have side-impact protection and other safety features we want on an everyday car seat, but for travel we agree that this has portability appeal. It also gets knocked in reviews for not being comfortable for long car rides if your child likes to nap, but again, we're putting it on this list for on-the-go families who are in "something is better than nothing" mode, even for short train, bus or van rides. Our experts appreciate how lightweight this seat is (8 pounds), and that it easily fits even on the smallest economy airplane seat (it's FAA-approved). The seat can either be installed using the LATCH system or the seatbelt in a car or airplane.
If you're a city family that doesn't even own a car, there's a big reason to love the PIPA portable infant car seat: It's built to be installed without a base and is exceptionally easy to move between vehicles, including rideshares like Uber. It's got a built-in rigid LATCH system or alternatively you can use the back seat seatbelt. Plus, the PIPA urbn only weighs 7 pounds, making it one of the lightest infant car seats we know of and an easy one to carry from place to place. The stroller, too, is lightweight at just under 14 pounds and can be folded down using just one hand. The car seat is built to ride on top of the stroller, for instance to get them both through an airport, and we named it our favorite lightweight travel system .
The infant car seat does not have a high weight limit, however. Your baby will outgrow it when they hit 22 pounds or are 29 inches tall, whichever comes first. For some that can mean by their first birthday. But the stroller will stay useful through the preschool years since it has a weight limit of 50 pounds. The car seat is airline-approved and will fit on most economy cabin seats.
How we test the best portable car seats
The Good Housekeeping Institute's engineering and parenting pros have reviewed dozens of car seats over the past five years, including portable car seats . Our Lab experts work with parents to test these car seats on a variety of vehicles of different brands and sizes to ensure that you can find the right car seat for your family.
Each car seat we consider has passed Federal Safety Standards. We perform tests both in the Lab and at home to evaluate each product's safety, ease of installation, stability, ease of adjustments, stroller compatibility and portability. To accomplish this, we set up each car seat in a variety of vehicles and strollers. We evaluate how easy it is to secure the harness as well as how difficult it is to install the car seats. For portable car seats we pay special attention to whether they can be installed without a LATCH system and to whether they are approved for use in an airplane cabin.
What to look for when shopping for a portable car seat
Whether you're going on a trip or often take your child places in a rideshare vehicle, if you need a portable car seat you should consider these things:
✔️ Height and weight limits : All car seats come with minimum and maximum height and weight specifications. To ensure proper seatbelt placement and optimal security, make sure your child fits within those ranges. Once they meet the maximum in either height or weight, it's time to switch. If you have an adjustable car seat that transitions to a booster look at the labels on the car seat, check the user manual or contact the manufacturer so you know when it's time to switch modes.
The National Hightway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can help you determine the right kind of car seat for your child based on their age, weight and height. That will help you figure out if you can use an infant car seat or if you need a convertible car seat and if you're ready to move on to a booster car seat for travel.
✔️ Weight : The lightest car seats are often the most portable. We get especially excited when we find any that are less than 15 pounds, though a few on our list are heavier than that.
✔️ Easy cleaning : Regardless of age, spills happen. Luckily, like many other car seats, most portable seats offer removable machine-washable seat covers and padding.
✔️ Design : Traditional car seats have a ton of padding, robust side-impact protection and extra features that are important for everyday but might be overkill for short trips. The best design for a portable car seat is a slim, streamlined one.
✔️ Ease of installation : Since you will be re-installing the car seat each time you put it in a new car or aircraft, it's important to find a car seat that is so easy to install it won't take more than a few minutes. The easiest car seats for traveling can be installed without a car seat base.
✔️ State laws : Before you bring your car seat across state lines, check state laws to be sure you'll be compliant. Often children through age 7 must be in a child-restraint seat. But if you're heading to Florida for Disney World, the laws there only apply to children through age 5.
Should you bring a car seat on the plane?
While it is not mandatory to strap your little one into a car seat on an airplane, many parents opt to do so since it can be both a safer and more comfortable for everyone . It's recommended to do so for children under age 2 by the FAA and AAP. Note: For your child to ride in a car seat, you'll need to buy them their own plane ticket so they're guaranteed to have the space. If your baby under age 2 is flying as a free "lap baby" you are not guaranteed space for your car seat.
Before you bring a car seat onboard, check that it has an FAA-approved sticker. It's also a good idea to bring along your car seat manual to help ensure that you're properly installing the seat on the aircraft. There are helpful videos on YouTube, too, that show how to buckle a car seat in with a lap belt. (This one from the FAA shows how to install a forward-facing car seat on a plane .) Watch some before your trip!
The average airline seat is about 17 inches wide and measures 30 inches from the back of the seat to the seat in front of you — but size can vary depending on which airline you are flying. Because of this, it's best to pick a narrow, compact car seat. Infant car seats fit better than most convertible car seats, though we find that the Cosco choice on our list generally fits well.
For those who are traveling with a car seat who don't plan to use it while on the plane, many airlines will check the car seat or booster seat for free at the check-in desk or at the gate. It might be a good idea to purchase a travel bag to fit it in, to help avoid damage.

Talk about emotional baggage.
Travelers are reeling after airlines including JetBlue , United, and American recently raised the cost of checking bags — with even higher rates in store for those who wait to pay at the airport, CNBC reported .
American Airlines recently announced that coach travelers would pay $35 to check a bag ahead of time online for domestic flights as opposed to $40 at the airport. Only recently, a first bag cost $30.
“It allows our team members to spend more time with customers who require additional assistance with their travel journey,” a company spokeswoman told CNBC. The company claimed it is cutting customers some slack in other areas, reducing fees for bags that come in slightly overweight.
Frontier Airlines passengers in 2024 face paying anywhere from $49 for a first checked bag, paid in advance, to $99 for that same piece of luggage if you wait to pay at the gate.
CEO Barry Biffle justifies that carrier’s in-person fee increase as a way to make everyone’s lives easier.
“It incentivizes people to get the transaction out of way. It’s easier for them, and honestly, it’s easier for us,” he said. Biffle added that spending less time on last-minute baggage checks can also allocate more resources for flyers “who need legitimate assistance.”
Checked bags have become a major, flying cash cow in recent years, with U.S. airlines alone raking in over $5.4B from baggage fees during the first three quarters of 2023.
That number is up 25% from the same nine-month span in 2019, CNBC reported, using Department of Transportation data.
Other research found that the top 20 global airlines netted nearly $34B from those fees only recently.
JetBlue, recently ranked the worst major airline of 2023 , admitted that boosting bag fees can help get airlines stay the course financially.
“While we don’t like increasing fees, it’s one step we are taking to get our company back to profitability and cover the increased costs of transporting bags,” the airline wrote in a statement.
JetBlue passengers now pay $45 for the first checked bag, a $10 increase, according to CNBC.
“By adjusting fees for added services that only certain customers use, we can keep base fares low and ensure customer favorites like seatback TVs and high-speed Wi-Fi remain free for everyone,” the airline said.
