  • Duration: 8 hours
  • Departure: Hotel pickup included
  • Departure Time: 8:30 AM
  • Includes: English-speaking driver/guide, Private transport by sedan or minivan, visit to Siena and San Gimignano

First up, we have another 8-hour tour full of fun on the Tuscan countryside. The Tuscany Private Day Trip from Florence is a great way to see some of the most beautiful parts of Italy with a private tour so you get to see more. Prepare for a day of knowledge, experiences, and a lot of fun as you’ll head to various cultural stops!

Start off in the morning being picked up by your driver where you will head to Siena. It feels like a part of this area never quite left the medieval ages, and is charming in its own way.

Here, we recommend you enjoy lunch in at the Pizzicheria de Miccolil. It’s half-butcher shop, half-bistro so you know your food is fresh. Did we mention it also includes a cheese and wine cellar?

Salamis and hams are abundant here, and try their delicious house-made pizza! Siena is definitely one of the most beautiful towns in Tuscany. That’s saying a lot, considering we are talking about the culture-rich Italian countryside.

Next onto the walled town of San Gimignano. One of the oldest villages in Chianti, some say it was even where Amerigo Vespucci was born. The fortified medieval hamlet is truly breathtaking with its scenery and architecture, and is known for its wine where you’ll try plenty.

Here you can go to the famous Guardastelle Vineyard where you can take a tour and taste some fine Italian wines. If your still hungry or even if your not, have some cheese and appetizers as well. Or go for a full lunch!

When you are ready for some exploring, we recommend checking out La Rocca di Montestaffoli. This 14th century fortress offers amazing views of the town.

Don’t miss the Torre Grossa. This is an ancient skyscraper, the ancients built them as well! When you climb to the top, you will be met by spectacular views of the town below.

  • Includes:  T ransportation by air-conditioned vehicle,  Wi-Fi on board,  English-speaking driver/guide, g uided visit to 3 different wineries, w ine tasting, o live oil tasting, l unch, f ree time in Greve in Chianti

If you’re a wine lover or would simply like to explore more about this world, you’re on the right track. The From Florence: Tuscany Wine & Food Tour with Guide is a bit longer, clocking in at 8 hours.

However, you’ll have time to visit 3 different wine estates and get to try all kinds of wines, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar! Another massive bonus to this tour is that they operate with very small groups, only. This means that you won’t just be lost in the crowd.

You’ll have personalized attention and can ask your guide any questions you may have. Smaller groups also allow you to simply see more!

Start off your morning by meeting at Piazzale Montelungo, where you’ll be picked up by your air-conditioned vehicle.

With wi-fi on board, you never have to worry about being out of the loop. You can go “live” on your social media platforms, send videos and photos to friends and family, post about your tour, etc. without having to wait!

However, we’re sure you’ll want to live in the moment and enjoy the beautiful scenery around you, too. As you journey around, your driver/guide will tell you and your group all about the area’s history, wine production, and other interesting facts and anecdotes.

You’ll drive south from Florence and reach your first winery where you’ll enjoy some wine and a tasty traditional Tuscan lunch.

The second winery will teach you all about the winemaking process where you’ll visit their farm and learn about where their ingredients come from. Their wine expert won’t hesitate to share interesting facts and “secrets” about their products and will give you a full tour of the space.

Make sure to try their perfectly-sweet Vin Santo dessert wine while breathing in the fresh air of the undisturbed rolling hills. Then, head to Greve in Chianti, where you’ll have some time to walk around the lovely main square which has been significant in the local community for many years.

3. Best Full Day Tour: Tuscany Wine Tasting Full-Day Trip From Florence

  • Duration: 7 hours
  • Departure: Piazza della Calza
  • Departure Time: 9:45 am
  • Includes: T our guide, t ransport for activity duration, m ap

First off, we have the From Florence: Tuscany Wine Tasting Full-Day Trip . Designed for independent travelers between the ages of 18 and 35 years old, it’s a lot of fun and relaxation with beautiful scenery to set the scene! This tour includes visits to 2 different wineries, but you’ll be able to learn about and experience much more than that!

This van is climate-controlled, with a nice amount of space and comfortable seats. You’ll set off at 9:45 am, which means you still have some time to sleep in and enjoy breakfast before starting your tour.

Your first stop is San Gimignano, located in the Chiani countryside, which is what this area is renowned for. When you first arrive, you and your group will have time to stroll around at your own pace.

This really is one of the best ways to see it, as you’ll be able to see this charming town up close and be able to really appreciate the details, the friendly locals, and different shops.

After this, you’ll head to a wine tasting school (which everyone should be educated on!). Here, you’ll try 4 different wines, including the notorious Chianti Classico D.O.C.G., a Super Tuscan wine, a 30-year-old balsamic vinegar, and lush truffle extra virgin olive oil.

As you taste, a professional wine producer will teach you how to spot the different flavor profiles and help develop your skills.

Next, head to another local winery facing the gorgeous tower of San Gimignano. The winemakers really treat you like family, sharing secrets about their wine and oil, along with the best wine and oil pairings to take full advantage of these flavors.

After tastings, you’ll have the chance to purchase their wines at an affordable cost to enjoy at home or share with your friends and family.

Then, you’ll have more free time to wander around the little alleyways of San Gimignano with some of their world-famous gelato in hand!

Siena is up first, which is an UNESCO World Heritage-listed town known for its captivating cathedral and Piazza del Campo. The latter allows only pedestrians to walk around, slowing things down and allowing you to really treasure the environment and experience.

Located along the renowned “via Francigena” road once operated by pilgrims, it’s known for producing the white wine of Vernaccia di Sangimignano and saffron. Admire the iconic orange terracotta roofs, contrasting the majestic gothic and Romanesque architecture of the cathedral. You’ll then head up to San Gimagnano, the UNESCO-site sitting on a hilltop.

The tower houses were constructed in the Middle Ages, and you’ll have plenty of time at your own leisure to check them and the local palaces, churches, etc. out!

What Can I See in One Day in Tuscany? (With a Sample Itinerary)

Tuscany without question is one of the most beautiful and charming regions of Italy. Even is you only have one day to spend in Tuscany, you can still see some of its best attractions.

First thing to do is head out to the countryside, where the real charm of Tuscany is. Your first stop should be the medieval town of San Gimignano. With its imposing towers, narrow alleys, and beautiful churches, its a must see! Walk around town and enjoy the views of the town and surrounding countryside.

Now its time to check out the small town of Monteriggioni. Its surrounded by 13th-century walls and towers. It’s a perfect example of medieval Tuscany and is a must visit for history enthusiasts. Walk along the town walls, explore the castle and take in the views of the Tuscan countryside.

After exploring Monteriggioni head to Siena. I think this is Tuscany’s most beautiful town. Siena is a perfect example of Italian culture and art.  It also has a beautiful medieval center that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

Explore the city’s narrow streets and visit the Piazza del Campo which is a Cathedral. If you have time, stop at a local trattoria and try some of the delicious Tuscan specialties, such as pici pasta or the famous bistecca alla fiorentina.

In just one day, you'll see, taste, and experience the best of Tuscany, complete with a homemade locally sourced lunch and expert-led wine tasting at a family-run farm in Chianti. We'll whisk you away to Siena and San Gimignano, two of the most stunning towns in Tuscany, helping you experience as much of this storied region as possible without you having to worry about the logistics. With a knowledgeable guide to lead the way as well as an experienced driver to get you from place to place, we've got all the details handled for an unforgettable Tuscany day trip from Florence.

See the best of Siena with the guidance of an expert in all things Tuscany.

Our day trip to Tuscany starts in the center of Florence, where you'll meet your expert guide, dedicated driver, and small group before boarding a comfortable, air-conditioned luxury vehicle. But before we set off into the rolling hills of Tuscany, we'll make a stop at Florence's best panoramic viewpoint for photos.

Your next stop will be eclectic, iconic Siena, which was miraculously spared from bombing during WWII—making it a pristine medieval gem in the midst of the Tuscan region. Stroll through the historic streets of the city center while your guide points out the most notable landmarks, including the famed Siena Cathedral and the location of the biannual Palio horserace.

Enjoy a gourmet lunch paired with impeccable wine on an authentic Chianti farm.

Of course, no Tuscany day trip from Florence is complete without a visit to the wine region! Chianti is a postcard-perfect area full of rolling hills and quaint farmhouses. As the lunch hour draws near, you'll take a tour of a family-run farm and winery, complete with sprawling vineyards and full wine cellars.

Time for lunch—and trust us, it won't disappoint. The menu varies seasonally, as Tuscan cuisine is famously linked to produce and uses only the freshest ingredients for the heartiest, most delicious dishes. Paired with a selection of the vineyard's very own wines, this is Italian food at its finest—and it's all included in the price of your tour.

Explore the UNESCO World Heritage town of San Gimignano.

With full bellies, we'll move on to the picturesque town of San Gimignano—so visually stunning and architecturally significant that it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll enjoy a full tour of the town, then have a bit of free time to shop for local Italian specialties or climb the city’s campanile for one of the best views in Tuscany.

From start to finish, the emphasis of our Tuscany day trip from Florence is on indulgence. Indulge in stunning scenery, delicious wines, and lazy strolls on our all-inclusive Tuscan adventure. We’ve taken care of all the details so all you have to worry about is how much Chianti wine you can fit in your suitcase.

11 Tips for day trips from Florence

If you are in Florence, the capital of Tuscany, for a longer period of time, it is an absolute must to experience more of the unique Tuscan landscape. Drive from Florence through the hills of Tuscany or take an excursion or day trip . Visit the wine regions of the region. Let yourself be enchanted by the many cypress and olive trees along the way. Besides Florence, there are a number of cities to visit in Tuscany that should be on your list, like Pisa , Lucca , Siena and Arezzo. But also Venice can be visited from Florence, using the various high-speed trains in the direction of Trieste. The smaller towns in the area of Florence, such as Fiesole, San Gimignano and Certaldo are also more than worth a visit. Read more about the best Tuscany day trips from Florence :

1. Day trip to Pisa (83 km)

Day trip from Florence

Pisa is approximately 83 kilometers from Florence, known of course for the famous leaning tower of Pisa and one of the best day trips from Florence. From Florence you can visit Pisa by train, or even better with this guided day trip from Florence . In the Middle Ages, Pisa dominated the Mediterranean. The Duomo, Baptistery and Campanile were built in the twelfth century, thanks to the wealth gained. After the defeat by Genoa, Pisa's decline began. The Campo dei Miracoli is currently Pisa's most famous square, as it is home to both the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Duomo plus Baptistery. Also visit Campostano, the cemetery, where you can see famous frescoes and where you can walk in one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe. A little more towards the Arno you will find a museum in the former San Matteo monastery, which has also served as a prison. The museum displays a collection of Pisan and Florentine art from the twelfth to seventeenth century. Also visit the Palazzo dei Cavalieri, home of an institute of the University of Pisa. Finally, the Santa Maria della Spina is recommended. This church is full of gothic pinnacles and spiers.

My favourite Tuscany tour : If you only have time for one full day trip from Florence, I recommend this excellent excursion where you will visit the highlights of Pisa, Siena and San Gimignano in one day. The ideal way to get an impression of Tuscany!

2. Tuscany excursion: visit the Chianti region

Chianti

On the way to Siena from Florence you will see all kinds of vines blooming along the Tuscan hills. These are the vines of the Chianti region. This famous Italian wine region has produced several good wines such as the Isole e Olena Chianti Classico. The Chianti region is a landscape rich in relief. In the west is part of the Apennines, namely the Monte dei Chianti. Furthermore you will find gently rolling hills characterized by olive groves, vineyards, forests and medieval villages. An example of such a village is Greve in Chianti , where you can visit the yellow Basilica Santa Croce, a statue of Giovanni da Verrazzano and a bronze statue by Igor Mitoraj. The village is famous for its strangely shaped piazzas and the market square. Also visit the most famous town in the region: Panzano . Here you will find a twelfth-century castle that played an important role in the fighting between Florence and Siena .

Tip 1 : Are you a wine lover and would you like to visit vineyards and taste different Chianti wines? Then this Chianti wine tour from Florence is highly recommended.

Tip 2 : Do you want to get a nice impression of the Chianti landscape in 1 day and also visit beautiful cities such as Siena, San Gimignano and Pisa? Then this day trip from Florence is my recommendation.

3. Fiesole (10 km)

Excursions around Florence

Fiesole is a town about ten kilometers from Firenze. It is located in the typical Tuscan hilly landscape. Fiesole was founded by the Etruscans in the seventh century BC. Until the rise of Florence, it was a prosperous and powerful city. The Duomo of Fiesole was built in 1028 with its impressive bell tower . The interior is quite austere, but behind the church you will find an archaeological site. There are remains of a Roman theater , Etruscan walls and a Bronze Age museum. You will also find a Franciscan monastery and a neoclassical church in Fiesole. If you drive to the small town of San Domenico , you can visit the church of the same name for frescoes by Fra Angelico Mary with angels and saints and The Crucifixion . Also nearby is the Romanesque church of Badia Fiesolana with a striped marble wall and an interior consisting of local gray sandstone, the so-called pietra serena.

Would you like to visit Fiesole? If you do not have your own transport, the hop-on-hop-off bus is by far the best option. Line B of this tourist bus will stop at a number of places in Fiesole.

4. Best excursion from Florence: Siena (72 km)

Tuscany excursions

The city of Siena is located about eighty kilometers from Florence ( book your day trip from Florence ). Siena is best known for its annual Il Palio , the horse races that have been held since 1287 in Siena's most famous Piazza: Piazza del Campo . On this shell-shaped square you will also find the Palazzo Publico with the Torre del Mangia. You will also find the famous fountain Gaia here. When you say Siena , you also think of Siena’s Duomo and the Campanile that shape the skyline. The Santa Maria Assunta dates back to the twelfth century and is a sparkling example of Italian Gothic with its richly decorated façade. The Campanile is 77 meters high. When visiting Siena, check out the Basilica di San Domenico from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries. The neo-gothic palace Palazzo Salimbeni, which now houses a bank, is also a sight in Siena, as is the national museum for works of art from the late Middle Ages and Renaissance.

5. Day trip to San Gimignano (56 km)

Tuscany Tours

The medieval town San Gimignano is located about sixty kilometers from Florence ( book your day trip from Florence ) San Gimignano is characterized by the thirteen towers that adorn the town. These towers date back to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. They were founded by the noble families at the time when San Gimignano was quite prosperous due to the constant flow of pilgrims who passed through the town on their way to Rome . The plague epidemic and the diversion of the pilgrimage route put an end to this success. The old city has been preserved, but of the thirteen towers, only the Torre Grossa can be visited. You enter the tower through the Museo Civico. This museum is worth a visit anyway, as there are a number of famous frescoes on display and an inscription by the writer Dante, who once visited the town. Other places of interest are:

  • The Collegiata church, where you can admire frescoe
  • HThe Palazzo del Popolo
  • Via San Giovanni with shops full of local products
  • Piazza del Duomo
  • Piazza della Cisterna with the famous stone well

6. Best of Tuscany: Lucca (81 km)

Lucca

The town of Lucca is about 81 kilometers from Florence . It is a pleasant place, which was founded as a Roman settlement in 180 BC. You can walk quietly on the original city walls . There are also quite a few churches that are worth a visit. Where once the Roman forum was, now stands for example the San Michele in Foro, a Pisan Romanesque church. Or visit Lucca's eleventh-century Duomo, the San Martino. This is another good example of the Pisan Romanesque style, which dominates Lucca . The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo is located next to the Duomo and displays Lucca's religious art treasures. Or go along the San Frediano, where the facade is decorated with a beautiful mosaic depicting the Ascension. Another attraction is the Amfiteatro. This is a well-known square in the shape of an amphitheater, where all kinds of nice restaurants and shops are now located.

7. Certaldo (40 km)

Certaldo

Certaldo is a place approximately forty kilometers from Florence . It is the birthplace of Boccaccio and famous for it's onions. Certaldo is close to San Gimignano, but is much more quiet than the medieval town. But no less beautiful. It is recommended to visit the old part of the city, Certaldo Alto . This is a medieval fortress located on a hill, which you can reach by funicolare or on foot. You will find Boccaccio all over the city. Boccaccio was a poet, author and renowned humanist who lived in the fourteenth century. He is buried in the church of Certaldo and here is a bust of the writer. Other sights include the Palazzo Pretorio from which the city was ruled for a long time, the Chiesa dei Santi Tomasso e Prospero where you can admire frescoes by Gozzoli and the museums Casa di Boccaccio and the Museo di Arte Sacra.

8. Monteriggioni (56 km)

Monteriggioni

Monteriggioni, about 55 kilometers from Florence ( book your day trip from Florence ). Monteriggioni is one of Italy's best preserved medieval fortifications . It was founded in the thirteenth century by order of the podesta of Siena as a protection against the Florentine threat. It was intended to protect the pilgrimage route from Western Europe to Rome . Monteriggioni is located on a hill and even today the city is surrounded by high city walls, two city gates and fourteen fortified towers. Places of interest are the large piazza with the Romanesque church, the Chiesa di Santa Maria, beautiful houses and shops where you can buy Castello di Monteriggioni wine. Today, the town is featured in the hit games Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood and Revelations. In July there are the medieval festivals in which the city is decorated by hundreds of knights and princesses. There are knight fights and medieval dances to watch. The feast is accompanied by medieval culinary dishes.

9. Florence day trip: Cinque Terre (200 km)

The Cinque Terre is a national park on the Italian coast and consists of five picturesque villages, namely Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. The entire area is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is known for the beautiful hiking trails that run between the villages. The part between Manarola and Riomaggiore is called Via dell'Amore. My personal favorite is the village of Vernazza with a picturesque fishing port. With this amazing day trip from Florence you can visit the Cinque Terre, one of the most beautiful coastal areas of Italy.

10. Arezzo (76 km)

tours in florence and tuscany

Arezzo is a city in Tuscany almost eighty kilometers from Florence and can also be easily reached in one hour by high-speed train. Founded by the Etruscans, Arezzo became the city of pottery and metalworking in Roman times. Arezzo is a city with many attractions, such as the joust of the Saracens on two Sundays a year. You can also visit a number of churches:

  • The Santa Maria della Pieve, a 12th century Romanesque church
  • The San Domenico a gothic church with a famous crucifix from Cimabue
  • Basilica di San Francesco with an important cycle of frescoes by Piero della Francesca
  • The Cathedral of Saint Donatius

You must also have seen the Piazza Grande and there are also two interesting museums: the Museo Archeologico and Museo d’Arte medievale e moderna. Names like Giorgio Vasari and Petrarca have produced this city.

11. Venice (2 hours by train)

Venice

Did you know that you can also take a day trip to Venice from Florence? The high-speed train departing from Santa Maria Novella will take you to the Venetian lagoon in just over two hours ( official website Trenitalia ). Go through the Venetian water streets in the famous gondolas. Buy a Venetian mask from one of the many handicraft stores. Visit Venice's most famous square, San Marco , with the famous Saint Mark's Basilica with its Byzantine appearance and marble and mosaic interior. San Marco is also home to the Palazzo Ducale, the palace of the Venetian doges. The Gothic Doge's Palace is one of the most important buildings in Venice that fulfilled a non-religious function. In San Marco's Square, you can also enter the campanile for a beautiful view over the lagoon. Don't worry: you can take the elevator up. Another well-known attraction is the Rialto bridge over the main canal of Venice where you can enjoy the beauty of Venice but also do some shopping in the shops on the bridge. But also visit the islands of Murano and Burano , which form a miniature Venice with their own many waterways.

A Taste of Tuscany: Self-Drive Itinerary for a Day Trip from Florence to Chianti and Val d’Orcia

Looking for a fun day trip from Florence? Immerse yourself in the dreamy Tuscan landscape surrounding Val d’Orcia and Chianti!

If you are a regular Yoga, Wine & Travel reader then you’ll know that I can occasionally get carried away and slightly overambitious when it comes to itinerary planning. There’s so much of the world to see, and so little time to see it all! So it should come as no surprise that I once again went a little overboard during our latest trip back to Italy .

Val d'Orcia landscape in Tuscany Italy with text overlay

Though I had been to Florence a handful of times, I had yet to see the rolling hills and vineyards in the heart of Tuscany. So what does one do when faced with the choice between embarking on a day trip from Florence to Chianti or a day trip from Florence to Val d’Orcia?

Vineyards in Chianti Italy

What any insane, overly ambitious person would do: choose both! Is it ideal? Probably not, but we were short on time and had a full day (and full hearts) to spare in Florence.

Rolling hills in Val d'Orcia in Tuscany Italy

Though you may only get a tiny taste of Tuscany, driving from picturesque town to town, eating delicious Italian fare and drinking mouthwatering Tuscan wine is a fantastic way to spend 1 day if you’re looking for a fun day trip from Florence. If you’re looking for an easy-to-follow itinerary through Chianti and Val d’Orcia, read on!

Italy may be compact and easy to travel around, but each region is unique in its own way – you’d need a lifetime to experience everything it has to offer! Read more on what to know about Italy before you visit here.

Where is Chianti? Where is Val d’Orcia?

View from Panzano in Chianti Italy

Chianti and Val d’Orcia are two famous regions within Tuscany. Florence, Tuscany’s capital city, is one of the most popular destinations in Italy and renowned for its Renaissance art, architecture and culture. Both Chianti and Val d’Orcia are located south of Florence, with Chianti being most well-known for the ruby-red wine from the region, and Val d’Orcia for its UNESCO-listed landscape .

Sangiovese grapes in Chianti Italy

Chianti is located approximately mid-way between Florence and Siena and encompasses a number of small towns including Greve, Panzano, Castellina, Radda and Gaiole. It is home to several world-class wineries and vineyards, most of which have restaurants or cellar doors that you can visit.

Val d’Orcia is located even further south, about 2 hours away by car from Florence. The main towns in the region include San Quirico, Castiglione, Pienza, Monticchieloo and Montepulciano. The landscape features iconic rolling hills, farmhouses, cypress trees and even fortresses.

Most of the time, people visiting Chianti or Val d’Orcia will choose to spend a few nights in either region (at the very least), and venturing out to wineries for meals and wine-tasting, or to other towns for sightseeing. For those of you who want to have your lasagne and eat it too, read on for how to visit both Val d’Orcia and Chianti in 1 day!

How to get around Tuscany

Rental car in Tuscany Italy

You could go an organized Chianti tour from Florence (and there are tons of Tuscany tours from Florence ) where transportation is taken care of, but if you enjoy the flexibility that comes with having your own car then I highly recommend renting a car to drive to the vineyards near Florence and explore the greater Tuscany region. However, driving in Italy comes with some, shall we say, unique issues.

If you Google “renting a car in Florence” you will see tons of information about the “ZTL” restricted traffic zone . This type of traffic zone is not uncommon across Italy, especially in busy cities with small historic centres – they are designed to limit the amount of vehicle traffic as streets can be narrow, and there are often many pedestrians out and about. In order to drive in Florence’s ZTL area you must have a special permit , or the car rental agency has to make arrangements to report the rental vehicle’s license plate to the police so that you don’t get slapped with a fine.

When we looked into renting a car in Florence we read horror story after horror story of people accidentally entering the ZTL and receiving a fine of a few hundred Euros in the mail months after their trip. In addition, the car rental offices within Florence’s city centre had, quite frankly, horrific reviews, and parking can be expensive or a bit tricky as most places ask that you leave the keys so that they can move your car around the garage if needed. If there’s any damage they are unlikely to assume responsibility. So, what is your best option if you only need a car for the day in Florence? Rent from outside the city to avoid the ZTL zone and penalties.

Driving in Tuscany Italy

Here’s what we did to rent the car from Florence Airport, about 20 minutes by bus from the SMN train station downtown:

  • Take the airport bus from the bus terminal at 17 Via Santa Caterina da Siena. Location here. Buses leave every 30 minutes and cost 6 Euros each way – buy your ticket directly from the driver. Alternatively, you can take a taxi which will cost approximately 22 Euros (with surcharges for luggage and/or rides between 10 PM and 6 AM).
  • Follow the signs at the airport to the car rental shuttle bus which will take you to the car rental depot near Florence Airport.
  • We rented our car from B-Rent and paid 40 Euros for the day + 30 Euros extra to reduce the excess to $0 (AKA deductible). The B-Rent guys were truly fantastic and upgraded us to a slick new Mercedes Benz as well. As the rental was for a full 24 hours, we just dropped the car off in the evening and left the keys in their dedicated key drop-off box. Click here to check current rental car prices – bookings can be cancelled or amended if your plans change!
  • If you plan on stopping at some wineries make sure the driver limits their intake or have a designated driver, as the BAC limit in Italy is very low.
  • The road conditions are great with limited toll stops, and the speed limit is anywhere from 40-90 KM/hour on smaller roads or 90-130 KM/hour on highways.
  • If you are prone to motion sickness you’ll definitely want to pop a dramamine!
  • You may also need an international driving permit.
  • The cell signal is patchy through Tuscany’s wine country, so I recommend downloading offline maps.

1 day Florence to Chianti and Val d’Orcia Itinerary

Vineyards in Chianti Italy

The Tuscan landscape can only be described as dreamy. Warm tones fill every corner of your eye, and you won’t even know where to look as the road winds and weaves ahead of you. Is it possible to visit Chianti and Val d’Orcia in 1 day? Yes, but this itinerary requires a bright and early start to pick up your rental car from Florence International Airport, and will get you back home late in the evening.

Val d'Orcia in Tuscany Italy

Note: Staying in Siena ? You can also use this itinerary for ideas on where to go in Chianti and which towns to visit in Val d’Orcia! It’s also possible to visit both Chianti and Val d’Orica from Siena in 1 day if you limit the number of stops – you can expect to cover approximately 200 kilometres and spend around 3-4 hours on the road in total.

1. Head towards Greve in Chianti

Castello di Verrazzano near Greve in Chianti Italy

Once you’ve picked up the rental car from Florence Peretola Airport, drive 45 minutes or so towards Greve in Chianti. I recommend heading straight to Castello di Verrazzano near Greve for lunch.

Walking among vineyards in Chianti Italy

The elegant castle was once an Etruscan settlement before it became a Roman one, and wine-making has been a longstanding tradition over the past few centuries. It is surrounded by lush Chianti vineyards that this postcard-perfect region is famous for.

Castello di Verrazzano Hosteria near Greve in Chianti Italy

Verrazzano offers guided tours or you can stop by for lunch and a wine flight of your choosing – bookings are essential if you want a table in their stunning dining room!

2. Explore Greve

Greve in Chianti Tuscany Italy

Greve is sometimes described as the “Gateway to Chianti” and is one of the larger towns in the Chianti region. From Verrazzano, the drive will take you no longer than about 10 minutes – you can park your car in a parking lot just outside the main square.

Shops in Greve in Chianti Italy

Piazza Matteotti is the main square in Greve with a handful of local cafes, bakeries and boutiques. Though small, it is an easy-to-visit and charming town that is representative of Italian life in the region. We stopped for just under an hour to try out some handmade pastries and a much-needed cappuccino.

Not keen on Greve? You can also make a quick pit stop in Radda or Castellina.

3. Check out the view from Panzano

View from Panzano in Chianti Italy

Head south from Greve towards Panzano, about 15 minutes away by car. Panzano is a hilltop town in Chianti that, much like Greve, is compact but convenient with its own town square, supermarkets, butcher shops and so on. Its strategic location overlooking the valleys of vineyards makes it a perfect photography stop for views like this.

It goes on for days.

No seriously, you’re going to need to pick your jaw up off the floor.

4. Check out San Quirico d’Orcia

San Quirico d'Orcia in Tuscany Italy

Next up is the beginnings of your time in Val d’Orcia. From Panzano, the drive to San Quirico will take 90 minutes or so, so strap in and enjoy the scenic ride. Free parking is available just outside the town square.

Horti Leonini in San Quirico d'Orcia in Tuscany Italy

San Quirico features an enchanting historic centre and Renaissance-era gardens (Horti Leonini), as well as the beautiful Church of Santa Maria Assunta.

Church of Santa Maria Assunta in San Quirico d'Orcia ITaly

Our time in San Quirico was short but sweet, and I’ve made a mental note to head back to explore more of this town on a future trip!

5. Visit the Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta

Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta in Tuscany Italy

This tiny chapel might possibly be the most-photographed chapel in the world. It is located just outside of San Quirico d’Orcia, and is believed to be built upon the spot where the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherdess. The chapel can be reached by foot from parking lots on either end – the stroll should take no longer than a few minutes’ time.

Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta in Tuscany Italy

If you are on schedule, you should be able to visit the Cappella just as the sun is beginning to set – the effervescent glow that streaks across the Tuscan sky makes for a perfect backdrop against the iconic chapel!

Valleys in Val d'Orcia in Tuscany Italy

6. Finish the day in Montepulciano

Valleys in Val d'Orcia in Tuscany Italy

By this time you should be getting ready to wrap up your day in the Tuscan countryside. Make your way towards Montepulciano, another landmark town within the Val d’Orcia region. The drive from the Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta to Montepulciano will take just over 30 minutes, which gives you just enough time to work up an appetite for dinner. The drive along the SP146 road is probably one of the most scenic drives of the region, so enjoy the ride!

Montepulciano Piazza Grande in Tuscany Italy

Montepulciano is a medieval fortress-esque hilltop town that features a commanding tower, palazzo, duomo and cobblestone walking paths. The car-free town offers several parking areas just outside the city centre – we parked for free in this parking lot – parking within the white lines is for visitors, and those within the blue lines is for residents.

Treat yourself to a tasty Tuscan dinner at Trattoria di Cagnano , just steps away from the Piazza Grande. This charming restaurant has a diverse menu that will please even the pickiest of eaters – try the hearty vegetable soup and fresh pasta!

Truffle tortellini in Val d'Orcia Tuscany Italy

After dinner, slowly mosey back towards Florence to drop off your rental car. Have more time? Turn this into a multi-day itinerary by spending 2 nights in Chianti and 2 nights in Val d’Orcia!

Not sure why you suggest picking up a rental car at the Florence airport, when several agencies have offices on Borgo Ognissanti, within easy walking distance of Santa Maria Novella and other parts of Centro. You only need to drive about five blocks OUT of the ZTL to reach a road that will take you into central Chianti. The return for drop-off is permissible as well. If you search for a car online, most search engines begin by offering three different pickup locations, only one is the airport.

Hi Johnny, the rental offices in Florence airport had a higher review rating when we looked. “Barbara and Armando executed their roles admirably, ensuring seamless coordination throughout the tour. Navigating three major cities and historic sites was a pleasure, thanks to their competence. Barbara, our patient tour guide, adeptly managed the challenges posed by tardy and irresponsible attendees, displaying a commendable level of professionalism. Despite a few hiccups caused by irresponsible passengers, all individuals eventually boarded, and the return journey transpired without incident. The experience, albeit dramatic at times, was salvaged by Barbara’s unwavering professionalism. The driver’s exceptional skills contributed to a smooth and enjoyable ride. On the downside, the light lunch provided fell short of expectations. Regrettably, it resembled more of a simple snack with a sample wine tasting, and did not meet our culinary preferences. Nevertheless, the overall value derived from the expenditure was undeniably worthwhile.” Sam ( read more reviews now )

The food was fantastic and served feasting platter style for each table and was more than enough. We got to try a few reds and white’s from the winery as well as a desert wine to finish and these were all very good nice. Plus they were quite generous pours with the tastings. 40 Fun Things to Do In Florence, Italy

I f you are wondering, "Should I plan a trip to Florence, Italy?" or "Are there enough things to do in Florence?" , the answer is always a resounding "YES!"

When you are planning things to do in Florence, even if you have just 1 day in Florence, you'll find that the city offers a smorgasbord of sights, sounds, tastes, and delights.

In fact, Florence is a great central location if you are planning day trips from Florence and want to explore the Tuscany countryside.

40 Things to Do In Florence, Italy

I would travel back to Florence again and again.

One, I know that there is always something new to discover in Italy, and two, there is delicious food, a multitude of day trips to dreamy small towns in Italy near Florence , beautiful architecture, intriguing history, and an endless number of things to do in Florence. It is the perfect Tuscan city.

1. Piazza del Duomo

Located in the heart of Florence, the square surrounding the Duomo is often overflowing with tourists, rain or shine. The Piazza contains:

  • Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral (Duomo)
  • Brunelleschi's Dome
  • Giotto's Bell Tower
  • Baptistry of St. John
  • Museo dell'Opera del Duomo

2. The Duomo: Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral

Formally known as Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, this prominent landmark fills the Florentine skyline.

If you download the Rick Steves Audio Europe tour and listen to the Florence Duomo audio tour, you will find out so much more information than if you simply wander around the square.

Did you know the Duomo took over 140 years to complete?

Additional facts to know about the Duomo:

  • The Gates of Paradise on the Baptistry are famous bronze doors in front of the cathedral that depict Bible scenes
  • Fillipo Brunelleschi, a trained goldsmith, had no prior training before building the domed roof
  • The dome on the cathedral was an architectural marvel ahead of its time standing over ten stories high
  • The Pantheon in Rome was the inspiration for the dome
  • The Santa Maria del Fiore stands as the third largest cathedral in the world
  • It took 16 years to complete the dome
  • The exterior is covered in a decorative mix of pink, white and green marble
  • Entrance to the cathedral is FREE

3. Climb Brunelleschi's Dome

Brunelleschi's Dome dominates the Florence cityscape. It is an absolute masterpiece of art built between 1420 and 1436 by Filippo Brunelleschi . It stands today as the largest masonry vault in the world created without wooden reinforcements.

Climb 463 steps (there is no elevator) to view the inside of the dome and the majestic view of Florence from the balcony. You need to purchase an OPA Combination ticket to access the dome and reserve a time slot prior to your entrance (this time slot cannot be changed)

4. Take Pictures of Ponte Vecchio

Wander through some of the oldest streets in the city until you reach the Arno River where you’ll also find Ponte Vecchio.

Ponte Vecchio is an iconic spot for photos if you are looking for Instagram worthy photo spots .

5. Walk Across the Ponte Vecchio

Ponte Vecchio was built for the house of Medici when they moved from Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti (across the Arno River) and felt they needed a private route to keep them connected with the Uffizi yet separate from the masses.

The  Corridoio Vasariano  (built by Giorgio Vasari in 1565) runs above the shops along the Ponte Vecchio. Meander across the bridge exploring the shops as you go. Shops have been a part of the bridge since the 13th century.

6. Visit the Uffizi Museum

Chris purchased tickets for the Uffizi Gallery for a mid-afternoon entrance. The museum is located adjacent to the Piazza della Signoria.

We definitely didn't complain about enjoying a little air-conditioned comfort during the hottest part of the day.

I recommend the audio tour through the museum. I do believe our girls had their fill of nude statues once we finished the tour!

The Uffizi Gallery is one of THE places to visit in Florence .

7. Palazzo Vecchio

The  Palazzo Vecchio , the town hall of Florence, Italy, overlooks Piazza della Signoria, where you will find a COPY of Michelangelo's David statue as well as an open-air sculpture gallery in the adjacent  Loggia dei Lanzi .

8. Piazza della Signoria

Note * Just outside the Uffizi Museum entrance in the Piazza della Signoria you will find the replica to Michelangelo's statue of David. The original David is on display in the Galleria dell'Accademia .

As the center of Florentine political life, Piazza della Signoria has been "...the scene of great triumphs, such as the  return of the Medici in 1530  as well as the  Bonfire of the Vanities  instigated by  Savonarola , who was then himself burned at the stake here in  1498  after he was denounced by the Inquisition as a heretic. A marble circle inscription on the piazza shows the location where he was burned." ~ VisitFlorence

Shopping & Markets

If you are looking for some genuine Italian leather purses, wallets, belts, or apparel, you won't leave Florence disappointed. Plus, there's so much more in the local markets.

Check out the little shops, the name brand stores, and the amazing markets and add them to your list of things to do in Florence.

9. Mercato Centrale

This market is perfect as a gourmet food court that also sells fresh, local ingredients.

10. San Lorenzo Outdoor Market

Peruse this sprawling market through the San Lorenzo neighborhood. It is the original leather market. Be prepared for a bit of haggling.

11. Mercato Nuovo

Locally known as the Mercato Porcellino, this market is where you can find the bronze statue of a wild boar (Il Porcellino) among other treasures.

12. Mercato Sant’Ambrosio

A covered indoor and outdoor market boasting local ingredients and an authentic Italian market experience.

Views and Vistas

13. piazzale michelangelo.

While searching for things to do in Florence, Chris found a great lookout point above Florence. If you are on foot, be prepared for the many stairs leading up to Piazzale Michelangelo.

The stairs aren’t so fun, but the view is spectacular.

It is always crowded in the evening when tourists come to watch the sunset along with views of the Arno River and the Ponte Vecchio.

Plus, art students sit on the steps drawing the scene below.

Since we visited Piazzale Michelango the first night with only our youngest daughter, we returned the next night with our middle daughter, Misha, who is an artist.

If you arrive a little too late, the steps will already be full of artists and tourists along with much of the wall space. There is still plenty of room to enjoy the amazing view.

14. Explore Fort Belvedere

The fort is walled off on one side with a six or seven foot wall and an equally high wall on the other side of the road to allow privacy for the big fancy estates.

If you wish to explore the interior of Fort Belvedere, formally called Fortezza di Santa Maria in San Giorgio del Belvedere , it is located at the highest point on the Boboli hill, a strategic position that allowed it to perform various functions in the past.

Entrance to the outdoor spaces and gardens is free; tickets are required to visit the exhibitions inside the fort.

Another great reason to visit Fort Belvedere is to visit the bar where you can enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif and the stunning view.

15. Enjoy Italian Food

Who doesn't visit Italy without the anticipation of trying delicious Italian food? Gnocchi anyone?

Il Bastioni di San Niccolo

A small trattoria next to the wall of Forte di Belvedere (Fort Belvedere). You can sit on the patio to enjoy a beautiful evening and scenery. You can opt for dine in or take out with pizza, sandwiches and salads.

Via Bastioni, 9R, Ang.Via Del monte Alle croci (Porta San Miniato), 50125 Firenze FI, Italy

Pensavo Peggio

Pensavo Peggio offers delicious homestyle Tuscan dishes with a rustic and charming ambiance. The staff helps you to feel at home. This restaurant is popular and you may wish to make reservations.

Via del Moro, 51 r, 50123 Firenze FI, Italy

Trattoria Marione

Via della Spada, 27/Rosso, 50123 Firenze FI, Italy

McDonald’s at the Train Station

After a long, hot, and tiring morning trying to take transit on a local holiday, our family headed to the train station and found ourselves looking for seats at McDonald’s. We weren’t the only ones. So many people jockeying for seats and only a little bit of table and chair space.

We hung out at McDonald’s in the Florence train station for awhile. While it was NOT on our list of things to do in Florence, it was a passable option as the weather was hot, we needed to feed our girls, they were familiar with the food, and we had a train to catch after lunch. Sometimes you just have to go with what is familiar and easy.

16. Eat Gelato

You can't go to Italy and not have gelato. It's tradition. If you need a break from crowds after a day of sightseeing, walk a couple of blocks away from tourist centers to find quieter streets and some gelato. Yum.

Gardens, Tuscany Treasures and More

17. boboli gardens.

Boboli Gardens, which are located directly behind Pitti Palace and were originally established by the Medici family, created a garden design that became the inspiration for many European gardens.

A ticket is required to visit the gardens.

23. Ride the Carousel

Make your way to the Piazza della Repubblica; you'll immediately spy the antique-looking carousel. This is one of the liveliest squares in Florence.

Whether you are traveling with or without children, this is one of the memorable things to do in Florence.

24. Explore the Leonardo da Vinci Museum

This interactive museum can be fun for the whole family as you test da Vinci's famous machines and try to replicate his bridges and free-standing domes. If you only have 1 day in Florence with kids, this is the perfect museum to visit.

25. Find Il Porcellino

Tradition says that rubbing the nose of Il Porcellino while dropping a coin into its mouth and making a wish will bring you good luck.

26. Enjoy a Couple's Getaway

I couldn't recommend a couple's getaway to Florence more! Though we had to sightsee in the rain at times, we loved the leather market, our stay at the 5 Star Sina Hotel Villa Medici , quaint cafes and restaurants, and exploring the Tuscany countryside! There were so many things to do in Florence!

27. Take Local Transit and A Plug for Actually Buying Tickets

Chris and I ventured into the heart of Florence to the Duomo with our youngest daughter, Kristen, on a recent trip.

You could take the risk of not buying transit tickets as you ride the bus around Florence, and 9 times out of 10, you might get away with it. But on the tenth time...

We caught the bus outside of our hotel ( Florence bus schedule ) and sat across from these two punk boys who were noisy, had their feet up on the seats across from them, and were simply being obnoxious.

A bus patrolman was sitting behind us and popped out of his seat once the bus started moving. Chris handily produced our tickets, but the boys had not bothered to purchase tickets. They had to hand over their ID.

And...they got a ticket!!! They spent the rest of the bus ride smack talking the bus patrolman.

I have to admit, it is kind of nice when karma happens. It was... satisfying.

When you are planning out your schedule for all of the things to do in Florence, an important consideration is where to stay .

If it is just two of you traveling for a couple's getaway , consider splurging (or using reward points) at the 5 Star Sina Hotel Villa Medici , part of the Marriott Autograph Collection.

You could get a taxi to travel from the train station to the hotel, or if you have been traveling all day long , it is a a good time to stretch and a relatively short walk to reach the beautiful Sina Hotel Villa Medici.

The King Suite—complete with two bathrooms, a sitting room, and a bedroom—is a charming and beautifully appointed suite.

There are plenty of breakfast options in Florence, but if possible, I recommend checking to see if breakfast is included with your hotel stay. It is not always the case, so be sure to check. With different levels of reward status , breakfast may be included.

Chris and I often choose to eat in the hotel dining room when it is included. It will save you time and money.

Funny story. I am a fan of oatmeal for breakfast. While staying in Florence, I made a request for oatmeal since it wasn't on the buffet table. I think they had to make it from scratch!

After a long wait, I was rewarded with the Papa-bear sized bowl. Even the waiter walked by and said, “ Oh, that’sa ... biga !”.

Florence for Families

For a different travel reward points option , the Hilton Garden Inn , located a short distance outside the city center in Florence , fulfilled the need for two rooms when we traveled with two of our teen daughters.

Note, the rules for occupancy in European hotels can be quite strict .

At a hotel in Madrid, Spain, Chris and I stood in line at the front desk behind a couple with a young toddler in tow. We listened as they argued with the front desk agent. The desk agent would not budge on the "two person per room rule".

The couple argued that their son could sleep in their bed with them. Having made the reservations weeks prior to their arrival, they were disappointed when the only option was to stay at a sister hotel that would allow a third person in the hotel room. However, the hotel was further from the city center.

If in doubt, check before you make the reservation.

The Concierge Will Help You Find Things to do in Florence

The concierge is a hugely valuable resource . As you begin your travels and adventures in Florence (and around the world), you will find that getting to know the hotel concierge is beneficial for a variety of reasons.

Their goal is to make your stay enjoyable and to help you find things to do in Florence (or any city you are visiting).

  • Make dinner suggestions and reservations
  • Obtain movie or show tickets
  • Provide maps of the area and give you directions
  • Book transportation for a day trip
  • Recommend nightlife hotspots
  • Arrange for spa services
  • Recommend fitness facilities
  • Make recommendations to keep you safe

Take Note of Local Holidays

We happened to visit Florence with our girls on Republic Day, also known as Festa della Repubblica in Italian (Festival of the Republic). It is a national holiday in Italy on June 2 each year. It celebrates the day in 1946 when Italians voted to abolish the monarchy and become a republic.

Sounds as though it should be fun right?

Welcome to the experience of trying to be a "tourist" on a national holiday .

We were scheduled to take one of our day trips from Florence to Fiesole and waited for over 40 minutes with our luggage in tow at a bus stop.

One Florentine lady at the bus stop was becoming more and more agitated by the moment. She was willing to complain to all that would listen in Italian and English.

“Stupida busa. Stupida city. Don’t they realize that more-a people are off-a for the holiday and want to go-a places. There are more-a people in-a the city today. Stupida. ”

In her defense, she had fresh steaks in her grocery bags and still far to go.

When a bus finally came, she was barely able to squish on it as people were spilling out the door. The four of us with all of our luggage never would had fit on the bus. Trailing our luggage behind us, we walked about twenty minutes to the next bus stop.

Our plans for the day included stowing our luggage close to the train station and venturing on a day trip to Fiesole. Our day trip just took a detour.

Our transportation troubles continued on Republic Day as we got off at the wrong stop and eventually found ourselves dragging suitcases past the Duomo over cobbled stones .

Ultimate tourist sign flashing over our heads!

We finally reached a Store n' Go luggage place in Florence, only to find that every. single. locker. was filled.

Ahhhh, what to do? We headed to the train station hoping to find luggage storage there. After a long and tiring morning, we found ourselves looking for seats at McDonald’s at the train station.

So, when you are planning things to do in Florence (or any destination), be sure to check for local holidays. These holidays may have a significant impact on your ability to catch transit, easily maneuver with extra tourists around, or even find places to eat.

Love this post pin it, final thoughts on 40 fun things to do in florence.

While purchasing gelato one evening (which you should really do at least once a day in Italy!), Chris chatted with the young girl dishing up our treats. She spoke in her broken English and Chris in his broken Italian.

She asked where we were from. Chris then mentioned how beautiful it was in Florence. The girl kind of shrugged her shoulders and indicated “meh”.
