How to fix a grayed-out Safari home page preference

safari 11 mac icon

While malware hasn’t found a fertile home on the Mac for decades, scammers keep trying. As many of you have experienced, adware and other software that delivers unwanted content or an unwanted experience abounds—like redirecting you to a specific website for searching or turning all Amazon links into affiliate links that earn the scammers a commission until they’re shut down.

Even with vigilance against nasty threats, you or (more likely) someone you know may have installed otherwise reasonable seeming software that hijacks Safari in some particular way. That includes a rather nasty way in which you can be prevented from changing your homepage in Safari in Safari > Preferences > General , then the Homepage field.

This technique involves using profiles, a tool for system administrators and others to distribute specific settings files to Mac users. It’s used more widely in iOS, where VPN software and other apps rely on profiles to let users opt into behavior that Apple otherwise prevents iOS apps from engaging in.

In System Preferences, look for the Profiles preference, which is a spiky badge with a checkmark in the middle. If you don’t see Profiles, you have no profiles installed, and any Homepage field problems are unrelated.

The Profiles preference pane may appear due to unwantedware installing it.

To remove an errant profile, click the Profiles preference pane, select the profile in the list, and click the minus button. This will prompt you to confirm removal and may require entering an administrative password.

Others users unable to change or set a homepage in Safari have found first restarting in Safe Mode (restart and then hold down the Shift key at startup ), and then restarting normally restored their ability to choose a homepage.

Open Safari on your Mac.

Select Safari from the menu bar and choose Preferences from the drop-down menu.

Select the  General  tab on the Preferences screen.

Exit the General preferences window to save your changes.

How to customize the safari start page on iphone and ipad.

Make your Start Page clean and simple---or just as cluttered as you like it.

On your iPhone or iPad, you can easily customize the Safari Start Page in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 (or higher). You can make the page blank (mostly), add a background image, or pick and choose what you want to see. Here's how.

First, open Safari on your iPhone or iPad and open a new tab by tapping the tabs button (two overlapping rectangles), then tapping the plus ("+") button.

In Safari on iPhone, tap the plus button to open a new tab.

You'll see Safari's "Start Page" by default. To edit what's on the Start Page, scroll down if necessary and tap the "Edit" button.

On the Safari Start Page, tap

When you tap "Edit," a "Customize Start Page" window will appear. Use the switches beside the listed options to turn them on or off. Here's what each option does.

  • Favorites: This displays items from your Favorites list (like bookmarks).
  • Frequently Visited: You'll see a list of frequently visited websites.
  • Shared With You: This gives you a list of items shared with you from other people through the Messages app.
  • Privacy Report: This shows a report on the number of trackers Safari has blocked recently.
  • Siri Suggestions: This displays suggestions from Siri related to what's in your history and bookmarks.
  • Reading List: This shows items from your Reading List .
  • iCloud Tabs: This shows Safari tabs that are synchronized across iCloud from your other devices.

Turn on any items you want to see on your Safari Start Page.

While also in the "Customize Start Page" window, you can use the "three lines" handle beside each item to tap and drag the Start Page items in the list. This will change the order of how the items will appear on the Start Page.

Use the three-line handles to change the order of the Start Page items.

And if you turn the switch beside "Background Image" into the "on" position, you can select a background picture that will display behind the content on your Start Page. Tap an image in the thumbnails or tap the plus ("+") button to select a custom image from your photo library.

Select a Start Page background in Safari on iPhone or iPad.

If you want to make your Start Page as minimalist as possible, switch off every item on the "Customize Start Page" list. (Unfortunately, you'll still see the "Edit" button.)

When you're done, click the "X" button to close the Customize Start Page window. The changes you've made take effect immediately. Happy browsing!

Troubleshooting, how to change your homepage in safari on mac.

How to Change Default Homepage in Safari on Mac

Want to change the homepage in Safari for Mac? Whether you’re new to the Mac or just haven’t bothered to tweak Safari homepage default settings before, you might find it worthwhile to change the default homepage in the Safari browser. You can do this within a matter of seconds too.

The browser homepage is the first web page that your browser loads up when you open it. Unlike some other browsers, Safari opens up the Favorites window rather than a webpage. Many users prefer to set a favorite website (like osxdaily.com of course) or a search engine as their default homepage. For example, when you open up Google Chrome, it loads the Google search engine. Or, when you launch Microsoft Edge, you’re welcomed by the Bing search engine. However, on Safari, the default homepage is set to Apple’s website since they don’t have their own search engine. But of course you can set any web page as your homepage, and by doing so it prevents Safari from opening the Favorites window upon browser start. If this sounds appealing to you, read along and you’ll changed your default homepage in Safari on Mac in no time.

How to Change the Homepage in Safari on Mac

Changing the default homepage in Safari is a straightforward procedure on macOS. Stopping Safari from opening the Favorite window is pretty easy to do as well. Just follow the steps below to get started.

How to Change Default Homepage in Safari on Mac

There you go. You’ve successfully changed the default homepage to your preferred web page in Safari on your Mac. Pretty easy, right?

From now on, you don’t have to worry about Safari opening the Favorites window every single time you launch Safari. Instead, you could set it to a popular web page like osxdaily.com, Google, Bing, Yahoo, or whatever else you’d like to see.

That being said, Safari’s Favorites window is actually pretty useful to quickly launch certain websites with just a single click. You can add as many websites as you want to the Favorites tab. You can add websites to Favorites from your iPhone and iPad too, and the changes will be synced across your devices over iCloud.

If you made these changes just to quickly access Google as your search engine, we’d like to inform you that Google is already set as the default search engine in Safari. You can type your queries in the address bar and there’s no need to set Google as your homepage for this purpose. Likewise, you can also change the default search engine that’s used by Safari on your Mac . If you’re one of those people who rely on DuckDuckGo, Bing, or Yahoo search, you’ll find the option to change that in Safari’s preferences.

And of course you can also change the default web browser on the Mac as well , so if you’d like the default browser to be Safari, or something else, you can easily tweak that setting.

Did you change your homepage in Safari? What’s your preferred homepage and why? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments.

Your Safari start page, or "homepage", is the page that loads whenever you start Safari. You can change this page to whatever you'd like, but if you have an adware infection it may keep getting reset. If this is the case, you can try manually removing the adware so that you can regain your control. If you use an iOS device, you can create custom shortcuts to simulate a traditional start page.

Changing Your Homepage

Step 1 Open the Safari browser.

  • If you're using Safari for Windows, click the "Edit" menu and select "Preferences". It is highly recommended that you switch to a more up-to-date browser, as Safari for Windows is no longer supported by Apple and is not receiving any security updates.

Step 3 Select the General tab if it isn't already.

  • You can also click Set to Current Page to set your new homepage to the page that is currently open.

Unlike the Mac, there is no method of setting a Safari homepage. Apple currently does not offer this functionality. The best that you can do instead is to put a direct link to the website on your iOS screen. Then when you want to visit the site, tap the screen icon and the site will load in Safari.

First, load the site in Safari and tap the Share icon at the bottom. This is a square with a vertical arrow sticking up.

Changes around Māori language come into focus as New Zealand government approaches 100-day milestone

Three generations of women stand together, Pounamu is 18, then her grandmother Ihapera, 66, and mother Natasha, 40.

At the age of 66, Ihapera Kaihe sometimes calls on her young grandchildren to translate Māori words into English.

Those moments are both a difficult reminder of the injustices of the past and a glimmer of hope that maybe the future can be different.

Because when Ihapera was growing up, her parents were not allowed to speak Māori.

She has memories of them keeping their te reo Māori a secret. And with only English spoken at home and at school, her connection to her native language was lost.

In the classroom, she endured years of those around her mispronouncing her name. As she explains how that would come to impact her life, her voice starts to break.

"I went through years of not being able to have it pronounced properly, and it was the reason I named all my kids English names," she said.

"I never ever spoke reo because Mum and Dad weren't allowed to at all, and by the time they brought it into my college … I'd finished school by then."

Ihapera named her children Natasha, Joseph and Ethan.

Natasha Diamond is now 40, but times have changed in New Zealand.

And when Natasha had a daughter of her own, she sent her out into the world with the name Pounamu, teaching her that if someone couldn't say her name correctly, she didn't have to respond.

Pounamu grew up in wharekura — a "full-immersion" Māori language school.

"That has a lot to do with past generations. They weren't as privileged to learn about our culture and our language," Pounamu said.

"It is definitely a big part of who I am."

As the three generations of Māori women reflect on how their country, and the experience of their family, has changed over the past 50 years, there is an uneasy feeling that the gains made around Māori language are now at stake.

The new three-party Coalition government has promised to repeal a whole raft of Labour-era policies that impact Māori and has also brought some new policies to the table.

Some of those agenda items have been criticised as trying to diminish the use of te reo Māori in New Zealand. For people like Ihapera, that hits a very deep and very painful nerve.

She starts to cry as she recalls what it was like when it was forbidden to speak Māori in Aotearoa.

Ihapera was 12 years old when one day when her father suddenly broke into te reo Māori.

"I never even knew my dad spoke te reo until one day he got up and started speaking Māori. It was very hard," she said.

"I remember somebody saying, 'What's the point in learning reo? You're not going to do anything with it. You can't get paid using it.'"

Over the past three months there has been a lot of debate about the future of New Zealand's treaty document, but the agreements Prime Minister Christopher Luxon made with his two coalition partners also include specific policies on language use.

The government will change the primary names of some public departments from te reo Māori to English, "except for those specifically related to Māori".

The government will also require departments to communicate "primarily in English" and will work to halt any additional public servants from receiving a bonus for the proficient use of te reo Māori , something that has been part of binding collective agreements since the 1980s.

And new legislation will be drafted to make English an official language of New Zealand, a status it does not currently have.

English isn't a legislated official language in Australia either. That's a move sometimes taken when a language needs to be protected.

'I will not speak Māori'

A Māori man with Tā moko face tattoos, seen in side profile, wearing a black singlet and hat

A lot has changed since Ihapera's parents were forbidden to speak their language, but not without an immense fight from Māori activists like Tame Iti.

Tame has been fighting for the preservation of te reo Māori for decades, telling crowds gathered at Waitangi this year he walked the grounds 52 years ago as a young man with the same message.

It was 1972 and decades of bans and restrictions on the Māori language had led to fears it would soon die out.

Tame told the ABC that when he was in school he was given a choice.

"I had to write 100 lines every time I got busted for speaking the language on the school grounds," he said.

"You have a choice, you either go with the wheelbarrow and pick up horse shit or you write 100 lines of 'I will not speak Māori.'"

A group of people stand together in a park while a man sits in the middle.

Tame would go on to become a key figure in Ngā Tamatoa — The Warriors — one of two Māori protest groups that, in September of 1972, delivered a petition calling for the recognition and revitalisation of te reo Māori to New Zealand's parliament.

He said the government of the day "perpetuated violence against children".

"They used children as the first target of [saying] no to the language and it affected a lot of people, my generation," Tame said.

"As a result of that, us, the young people, formed an organisation to resist against government policy."

It is likely not a coincidence that as the New Zealand government moves to make changes around language, Tame directed an artistic performance that paid tribute to the members of Ngā Tamatoa.

He has been around long enough to read the politics of the situation.

A black and white image shows a banned that says 'akona te reo Maori'

Government approaches first 100 days

It was in late November when Mr Luxon signed the coalition deal with David Seymour of the ACT Party and Winston Peters of NZ First.

And on Friday, the coalition government will face the first test it set for itself — its 100-day deadline.

Mr Luxon announced a long list of targets the government would reach by March 8 and his government has been pushing changes through.

Among the changes was the repeal of New Zealand's world-first tobacco ban and the disbanding of the Māori Health Authority.

The Luxon government has also ended fair pay agreements and brought back negative gearing.

Luxon's National Party campaigned on some of these changes, but a lot of the policy shifts that relate to Māori rights and recognition have come out of the coalition agreement, in particular the deal with NZ First.

For some National voters, they have become unexpected distractions.

Political analyst at Victoria University of Wellington Lara Greaves said some of the changes were at odds with what New Zealanders have long said they want action on.

"One of the criticisms of this coalition agreement was there were things in there that no-one really campaigned on, or that no-one voted for National based on," she said.

"They didn't necessarily expect there to be this change on the tobacco [ban], or necessarily expect there to be this change in the language policy."

She said in voter surveys there were "very few people who are saying Māori issues, treaty issues are on the top of their agenda".

"What we saw by and large in every single piece of data in the lead up to the election was cost of living, cost of living, cost of living, Dr Greaves said.

"Mostly we're talking about Māori issues and most New Zealanders, based on polling data, wanted to talk about the economic issues."

A spokesperson for Prime Minister Luxon's office told the ABC in a statement that the changes to the use of te reo Māori were about public access.

"Government organisations will continue to use dual names [or] branding, albeit there may be some change in emphasis," the statement read.

"This allows all people of New Zealand to navigate their way easily when they are accessing critical services like health.

"People must be able to effectively access and communicate with public services, no matter what language they use, whether it is te reo Māori, English or New Zealand Sign Language."

The spokesperson said the government valued "Māori language and culture which are fundamental to New Zealand's past, present and future".

Pounamu said she could not see the practical reason for the shift given most public uses of te reo Māori were accompanied by an English translation.

"My issue is I just don't I don't understand what big change this is going to make, other than make us feel like we're less of a people," she said.

"It boils frustration inside me, as a younger generation, knowing what the older generations went through. It frustrates us to know that they're trying to reverse it."

Message to government: 'Bring it on'

Tame believes the language he fought so hard for has become something the next generation will defend too, and they will do it speaking te reo Māori.

After so many years of activism, protest and now art, he takes a very long view.

A person holds a megaphone while marching with others holding signs at a rally.

"You get elected for three years, and then they might not get in next time, but I don't really care what they do because we are going to continue," he said.

"I'll just say this, bring it on.

"You're dealing with a whole different group of young people, they're a different breed of people. They don't have the same trauma that a lot of us have. They haven't been undermined as a child."

Ihapera is learning te reo Māori, and that younger generation is helping.

Ihapera explains that she will often ask her six-year-old moko, or grandchild, to translate, as she tries to keep up with the conversation going on around her.

"I just ask them 'What did they say?' [And he explains] 'He just wanted you to open up his water bottle' and this was a six-year-old,' she said.

"I'm getting there. Slowly, but I'm getting there. It's so nice."

okay, I've found something.

In this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5651631?answerId=24079497022#24079497022 there's a code line in Terminal that prevents changing the Homepage:

sudo dscl . mcxset /Users/USERNAME com.apple.Safari HomePage always -string "ADDRESS"

I've tried it out changing USERNAME for mine and ADRESS to "www.apple.com" and works properly after restarting the mac.

So if there's an option to block the HomePage adress in Safari, there might be a code line that unlocks it (I'm not a developer so I don't understand almost anything).

You probably have installed adware. You must remove the adware, THEN remove the profile, and it shouldn't come back. Try doing a scan with the free version of Malwarebytes: http://malwarebytes.org/mac .

That is right, those tricky programs to "clean" your mac are a headache... also I think a complete new "Profile" icon on the System Preferences must be nothing friendly... I don´t now exactly what consequences could bring but it is definitely a fissure in the OSx.

The Big Change Between the 2020 and 2024 Races: Biden Is Unpopular

Donald Trump has the largest national lead in an NYT poll since first running for president in 2015.

  • Share full article

Nate Cohn

By Nate Cohn

safari homepage not changing

Let’s just say it: Joe Biden should be expected to win this election. He’s an incumbent president running for re-election with a reasonably healthy economy against an unpopular opponent accused of multiple federal crimes.

And yet President Biden is not winning, at least not now. Polls show him trailing in states worth well over 270 electoral votes, and this morning he lags Donald J. Trump in our newest New York Times/Siena College national poll by five percentage points among registered voters , 48 percent to 43 percent.

That’s the largest lead Mr. Trump has ever had in a Times/Siena national poll. In fact, it’s the largest lead Mr. Trump has held in a Times/Siena or Times/CBS poll since first running for president in 2015.

Why is President Biden losing? There are many possible reasons, including his age, the war in Gaza, the border and lingering concerns over inflation. But ultimately, they add up to something very simple: Mr. Biden is very unpopular. He’s so unpopular that he’s now even less popular than Mr. Trump, who remains every bit as unpopular as he was four years ago.

safari homepage not changing

Views of each candidate

UNFAVORABLE

safari homepage not changing

President Biden’s unpopularity has flipped the expected dynamic of this election. It has turned what looked like a seemingly predictable rematch into a race with no resemblance to the 2020 election, when Mr. Biden was a broadly appealing candidate who was acceptable to the ideologically diverse group of voters who disapproved of Mr. Trump.

Instead, many voters will apparently agonize between two candidates they dislike. It’s exactly what Democrats sought to avoid when they nominated Mr. Biden in 2020. It’s what Democrats largely avoided in the 2018 and 2022 midterm elections, when they mostly nominated acceptable candidates or ran incumbents against right-wing opponents. And it’s exactly what led to the election of Mr. Trump in 2016.

Overall, 19 percent of registered voters in the Times/Siena survey have an unfavorable view of both candidates — a group sometimes referred to as “double haters.” These voters say they backed Mr. Biden by a three-to-one margin among those who voted in 2020, but now he holds the support of less than half. Every vote counts, but these voters will undoubtedly be pivotal in deciding the November election.

The double haters might ultimately return to Mr. Biden’s side. There are still eight months left until November, and it’s not as if these voters like Mr. Trump. If they do come back to Mr. Biden, perhaps their return will have seemed inevitable in retrospect.

But from today’s vantage point, we can’t know what will happen. What we know is that the choice for these voters is much more difficult for them than it was four years ago, when they said they liked Mr. Biden. They don’t today. It creates the conditions for a volatile race, and it might just be enough to flip their preference for president as well.

You can read the full article on the poll here.

A few other items of note:

In our last poll in December , Mr. Biden led by two points among likely voters, even though he trailed by two among the wider set of registered voters. But in this poll, Mr. Trump holds a four-point lead among likely voters. That’s still better for Mr. Biden than his five-point deficit among registered voters, and it continues a pattern of unusual Biden strength among the likeliest voters, but the difference is no longer enough to give Mr. Biden the lead.

Mr. Biden’s strength remains relatively concentrated among the most regular voters, as he holds a 46-45 lead among those who have voted in a midterm or a primary. He trails by only two points among those “almost certain to vote.” But many other voters will turn out in a general election, and at least in this particular poll they’re enough to give Mr. Trump a modest lead.

The poll found Mr. Trump leading Nikki Haley in the Republican primary, 77-20. That’s pretty good for Mr. Trump, of course, but it’s actually Ms. Haley’s best result in a month. And according to our poll, there’s a simple reason for her strength: Biden voters, who now make up 15 percent of those who say they will probably vote in the Republican primary. In fact, a near majority of Ms. Haley’s supporters (48-31) say they voted for Mr. Biden in the last election instead of Mr. Trump.

Mr. Biden’s support among nonwhite voters keeps sinking. He held just a 49-39 lead among the group, even though nonwhite respondents who voted in the 2020 election said they backed Mr. Biden, 69-21.

Despite the positive economic news over the last few months, 51 percent of voters still said the economy was “poor.” In a strange way, perhaps that’s good news for Mr. Biden: Maybe his standing will improve if or when voters begin to gain confidence that the economy has turned the corner.

Even at this late stage, Democrats are still divided over whether Mr. Biden should be the nominee, with 46 percent saying he should be and 45 percent saying he shouldn’t. We didn’t ask whether Mr. Biden should drop out of the race. We considered it — in fact, we discussed it for days — but many respondents may not know the complications involved in a contested convention.
