RAC Tourist Trophy

From wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The RAC Tourist Trophy (sometimes called the International Tourist Trophy ) [1] is a motor racing award presented by the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) to the overall victor of a motor race in the United Kingdom . Established in 1905, it is the world's oldest automobile race. [2] The 18-carat gold trophy is based on Giambologna 's sculpture of the Greek god Hermes . [3] [4] Series to have featured the trophy include the World Sportscar Championship , the FIA GT Cup , the World Touring Car Championship , the European Touring Car Championship , the FIA GT Championship , the British Touring Car Championship , [2] [5] the FIA GT1 World Championship , [6] and the overall winners of the British GT Championship in the 1999 , 2000 , 2003 and 2004 seasons. [lower-alpha 1] [7] It has been presented to the overall winners of the Silverstone Circuit round of the FIA World Endurance Championship from 2013 on. [8] [9]

The race was first contested on the Isle of Man in 1905 and continued to be held on the island until 1922. [2] It moved to the Ards Circuit on Northern Ireland 's public roads in 1928 after an article written by the journalist Wallace McLeod in a Belfast newspaper suggested it occur in the area and the inventor Harry Ferguson helped the RAC to find a suitable track. [1] [10] Donington Park staged the trophy's following two races in 1937 and 1938 after a major accident involving a Riley car during the 1936 edition killed eight onlookers and injured another 25. [11] [12] Following the Second World War , it returned to Northern Ireland and was held on the shorter Dundrod Circuit ; [11] a second major crash that killed three competitors in 1955 led the local authorities to bar all future car races on the track. [13] Since then, the race has occurred on permanent racing circuits rather than closed public road tracks. [14]

John Napier in an Arrol-Johnston was the event's inaugural winner in 1905. [15] The first non-British driver to win the race was the Frenchman Jean Chassagne , who drove a Sunbeam Tourist Trophy car to victory in the 1922 race. [16] Italian driver Tazio Nuvolari became the first driver in history to claim the trophy in 1933 to accompany it with an overall victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the same year. [17] The winners has been decided by the disqualification of drivers on three occasions, in 2010 to the Nissan pair of Jamie Campbell-Walter and Warren Hughes after the Aston Martin Young Driver AMR pair of Darren Turner and Tomáš Enge lost the victory due to excess wear on their car's plank, [18] in 2016 when Audi 's Marcel Fässler , André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer were disqualified for a skid block infringement and promoted Porsche 's Romain Dumas , Neel Jani and Marc Lieb to first, [19] and in 2018 after two Toyota TS050 Hybrids were disqualified for a failed post-race test and elevated Rebellion Racing drivers Mathias Beche , Thomas Laurent and Gustavo Menezes to the victory. [20] [21] The current winners are Mike Conway , Kamui Kobayashi and José María López for Toyota . [22]

Regional Arts Commission launches push to increase arts funding by boosting St Louis tourism

Hundreds of festival-goers wait outside of The Big Top on Washington Avenue during a recent Music at the Intersection Festival.

The Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis is launching a campaign to raise the region’s national profile as an arts destination.

The commission, which gets most of its money for grants from a tax on overnight accommodations, saw its funding dwindle when tourism dipped sharply at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We need to get people in hotels,” said Jay Scherder, communications senior manager.

Tax revenues for RAC went from $6.9 million in 2019 to $3.5 million the next year, causing the grant-making agency to sharply cut grants it had already promised for 2020. RAC temporarily shed most of its staff, simplified its grant-application process and removed some limitations on how organizations may use their money.

RAC forecasts that it will receive $7.3 million in tax revenue this year. That would make 2023 the first year to exceed the 2019 total, but is still about $100,000 less than RAC forecasts it would have received if not for the pandemic.

The centerpiece of the marketing push is a new website that compiles arts offerings — StLouisArts.org . It’s a response to arts leaders who have said it’s difficult to get on the radar of visitors to St. Louis.

“What this website is hoping to accomplish is to be able to put St. Louis on the map as being an arts town,” Scherder said, “a place that people can come and have a very unique experience compared to other cities across the United States.”

The marketing push is a strategic shift for RAC, whose leaders have been exploring ways to boost its revenues. Previous profile-building efforts, including development of a mobile app and an arts calendar produced in partnership with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, did not succeed, Scherder, said.

Leaders from some of the largest arts organizations in St. Louis recently traveled to New York to discuss arts offerings with journalists.

Funding for the campaign comes from RAC’s annual tourism outreach budget of $500,000, or about 7% of its expected revenue in 2023.

Studies by Americans for the Arts, a national advocacy organization, have found that arts organizations in St. Louis generate more income than its sports teams. As of fiscal 2015, arts organizations in St. Louis supported 19,129 jobs and generated nearly $600 million annually in direct economic activity.

“The arts are one of the biggest draws to St. Louis. The Cardinals and beer, they get more love than the arts, but the arts bring in more revenue to St. Louis than sports do, and so they really do deserve to get a spotlight,” said Cat Neville, vice president of communications for Explore St. Louis.

The commission is targeting potential visitors living in Peoria, Paducah, Chicago, Indianapolis and other cities with digital marketing and ads in major airports. Many early visitors to StLouisArts.org live in Germany, Scherder said — a place where St. Louis arts leaders hope to find new audience members after the start of nonstop flights from Lambert International Airport to the country.

The grant-maker also will begin co-sponsoring events its leaders think are likely to draw people from out of town, including the Open Highway Music Festival at Chesterwood Amphitheater, Kranzberg Arts Foundation’s Music at the Intersection festival in Grand Center and the inaugural Evolve music festival coming to Forest Park in September.

Explore St. Louis brought leaders from five of the largest St. Louis arts organizations, including Pulitzer Arts Foundation and Opera Theatre of St. Louis, to New York in March to meet with journalists and propose stories about arts offerings. Explore St. Louis plans to host visiting media for a tour of arts destinations in May.

“It's really a positive cycle that benefits everyone in our region to have folks come and for us to be known as a world-class arts and culture city, which we are. It’s important to scream that from the rooftops,” said Andréa Purnell, chair of RAC’s Board of Commissioners.

UFC And Tourism WA Announce Multiyear Deal To Bring Two Action-Packed MMA Events To Perth

UFC, the world’s premier mixed martial arts promotion and part of TKO Group Holdings (NYSE: TKO), together with the Western Australian Government through Tourism Western Australia, today announced a multiyear partnership in which UFC will return to Perth with two blockbuster events starting with UFC 305 at RAC Arena on Sunday, August 18.

UFC 305 marks the third time Perth has hosted a UFC Pay-Per-View event following the success of UFC 221: ROMERO vs. ROCKHOLD in February 2018, and most recently, the record-breaking UFC 284: MAKHACHEV vs. VOLKANOVSKI in February 2023.  Under the new agreement, UFC will also work closely with Tourism WA to bring one additional must-see mixed martial arts (MMA) event to Perth featuring an exciting UFC FIGHT NIGHT.

“Perth, I am so excited to be coming back!” said UFC CEO, Dana White . “After a record-breaking event in 2023, I can’t wait to bring another massive pay-per-view to Western Australia.  Perth is a world class city with some of the most passionate fight fans I’ve ever seen – UFC 305 is going to be INCREDIBLE!”

In February 2023, UFC 284: MAKHACHEV vs. VOLKANOVSKI broke RAC Arena records for revenue and sporting event attendance. UFC 284 also broke the national arena record for the highest-grossing ticket sales of any event, which was then surpassed by UFC 293: ADESANYA vs. STRICKLAND at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena in September.

UFC 284: MAKHACHEV vs. VOLKANOVSKI delivered an estimated $42.8 million of total economic and flow-on benefits with more than 9,000 international or interstate visitors making the trip to Perth for the major event.

Helping make the announcement today at Scrappy MMA in Willetton was No.1 UFC featherweight and former champion, Alex Volkanovski ; No.5 UFC welterweight and Perth’s own, Jack Della Maddalena ; No.10 UFC flyweight, Steve Erceg also from Western Australia; Peter Kloczko, Vice President of Australia and New Zealand, UFC; the Hon. Roger Cook MLA, Premier of Western Australia and the Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA, Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism.

“The return of UFC to Perth in 2024 is a major coup for Western Australia, following the roaring success of UFC 284 that injected millions into our economy last year,” said Premier Roger Cook.

“UFC has proven to be a huge drawcard with a dedicated fan base, and we expect to see thousands of out-of-state visitors travel to Perth to attend this blockbuster.

“Western Australia continues to strengthen its reputation for hosting world-class sporting events, and with UFC boasting the best of the best in MMA, UFC 305 represents yet another high calibre spectacle in our events calendar.”

“We are very excited to once again be hosting UFC at RAC Arena, and we expect UFC 305 to be another major success for WA’s tourism and hospitality industry,” said Deputy Premier and Tourism Minister, Rita Saffioti.

“We know that sporting fans love to come to Perth to witness a high-stakes sporting event in one of our world-class sporting venues, and the weekend of 17-18 August will be a knockout with UFC 305 at RAC Arena and the Wallabies vs Springboks at Optus Stadium.”

Peter Kloczko, UFC Vice President Australia and New Zealand added, “We are absolutely thrilled to be heading back to Perth for two exciting UFC events over the next few years. UFC in this region goes from strength to strength; from our amazing roster of talent to record-breaking events across the country, it’s only getting better. I want to thank the WA Government and Tourism Western Australia for their continued support for UFC, MMA, and making UFC 305 in Perth possible.”

Fighter match ups for UFC 305 will be announced at a later date.  Meanwhile, fight fans wanting access to pre-sale tickets and to keep up to date with all UFC 305 event announcements can register their interest at www.ufc.com/perth .

UFC Travel Packages are available from today via Sportsnet Holidays. Fans can lock in their travel plans with certainty of securing tickets to UFC 305 by visiting http://www.sportsnetholidays.com/ufc-305-perth .

VIP Experience packages will be available soon via On Location, UFC’s Official VIP Experience Provider. Enjoy exclusive access with an official ticket package that can feature premium seating, VIP access to weigh-ins, all-inclusive hospitality, meet-and-greets with UFC athletes and more. For more information, visit UFCVIP.com to view package details.

Since 2010, UFC has presented 17 live events in Australia, including sold-out shows at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena, Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena, Perth Arena, Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Adelaide Entertainment Centre and Gold Coast Convention Centre. Collectively, these events have seen over 325,000 fans in attendance and millions worldwide watching on PPV and broadcast television. The six host cities to date – Sydney, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth – have produced a cumulative gross gate of more than $64 million and hundreds of millions more in economic impact.

The announcement of UFC’s newly forged partnership with Tourism WA follows the massive success of last month’s WWE Elimination Chamber: Perth , which the WA Government, through Tourism WA, played a key role in bringing to the region. UFC and WWE, two of the world’s most iconic sports and entertainment brands, were merged under TKO Group Holdings in 2023.

Information regarding media accreditation for the event will be sent out at a later date.

RAC launches new St. Louis Arts website

The Regional Arts Commission hopes to make the new resource a hub for both locals and out-of-towners interested in the city's art scene.

Starting this Monday, visitors and locals alike can connect to St. Louis’ arts scene through a whole new platform. StLouisArts.org , a new site launched by the Regional Arts Commission (RAC), is aiming to increase the visibility of the city’s arts and culture sector, ultimately attracting more tourists to the region. According to communications senior manager Jay Scherder, the website will serve as a one-stop shop for all things arts in St. Louis.

“With this website, we've got another amazing avenue to be able to tell the stories of our artists and arts organizations and give them more exposure,” Scherder says.

Currently, StLouisArts.org directs readers to local theaters, museums and galleries, comedy venues, and more. Featured articles also include a guide to 20 must-see sculptures and an explainer on St. Louis’ explosion of mural art. The current version of the site is just a start, though. In the future, the RAC intends to expand the scope of the sections and tailor the interface so that users can find the event that fits their specific needs. This next iteration—what Scherder calls “phase two”—will act as a kind of concierge to the city’s arts scene.

“Phase two is sort of a never-ending phase,” Scherder says. “It’s about making the website better every single day, including being able to feature the artists that make our city so amazing.”

StLouisArts.org is also positioned as the cornerstone of the RAC’s first major marketing campaign. This initiative will focus on advertising St. Louis’ arts and culture sector to cities that provide the greatest number of tourists, including Chicago, Kansas City, and Peoria, Illinois, alongside other arts-oriented cities such as Columbus and Indianapolis. As the largest funder of the arts in the region, RAC collects a vast majority of its revenue from the hotel and motel tax in St. Louis City and St. Louis County. Through this campaign, the organization hopes to generate revenue that can give back to the community in the form of grants.

So far, Scherder says reactions to the website’s launch have been resoundingly positive. He stresses that by continuing to actively engage with the platform, St. Louisans can help to make it their own.

“We welcome feedback from our community on what they want to see and how they want the website to feel—because this is their website too,” Schreder says. “We're really excited about the future.”

What Ras Al Khaimah Needs to Cash in on ‘Wynn Effect’

Josh Corder , Skift

March 31st, 2024 at 8:25 AM EDT

Not everyone can afford to stay at the Wynn.

Josh Corder

Demand for hotel stays will be greater than supply in Ras Al Khaimah, according to Tatiana Veller, managing director of Stirling Hospitality Advisors, a subsidiary of state-owned RAK Hospitality Holding.

She said interest in the emirate has skyrocketed since the announcement in 2022 that a Wynn resort would be opening.

“Doubling the inventory in four years isn’t quite enough,” she said during the “RAK Investment Pulse” webinar. “Right now, we [RAK] are roughly even with demand and supply. By the time Wynn opens in 2027, the demand for additional room nights is overtaking supply.”

At the end of last year, the emirate had around 7,250 hotel keys. By 2027, it looks to double that to 14,000 and then reach more than 15,000 by the end of the decade.

This is still not enough, Veller said. “The gap will start to grow. By 2030, we could be about 10,000 hotel keys short [to meet demand]. We are quite certain in these numbers.”

Ras Al Khaimah brought in 1.2 million overnight visitors last year and wants to increase that number three-fold to 3.6 million by 2030.

Stirling shared the below slide to illustrate its point, showing “demand projection” outweighing available supply.

rac tourism

With the Wynn ‘only’ having 1,500 rooms, RAK Hospitality Holding said more hotels are needed to capitalize on a “spillover” from the Wynn.

Veller said: “All of that demand [from the Wynn] will be spilling out into neighborhood hotels. Guests will be selecting their hotel based on their budgets.”

The average daily rate to stay in Wynn Las Vegas was $513 in 2023. By comparison, the average daily rate across RAK’s entire hotel sector was $141 in 2023.

Opportunities Outside of Wynn

Addressing the high price point of the Wynn and other hotel projects, RAK Holding told investors there is a wide-open opportunity to build more mid-scale hotels in the emirate.

RAK Hospitality Holding COO Donald Bremner said on the call: “Some near-term opportunities are a layer off the beach, into land a bit more. Look at mid-scale hotels or lifestyle hotels. If you can get the land and get a plan in that second layer, it’s a good opportunity.”

Bremner noted that much of Ras Al Khaimah’s hotel business right now comes from package deals and all-inclusive stays. One of the city’s best-known hotels is the Rixos Bab Al Bahr – an all-inclusive brand under Ennismore.

“Where those customers will want to go is another opportunity. They want sun, sea and sand but perhaps want more traditional package holidays further away from the Wynn,” Bremner said.

By 2027, RAK is projected to have just eight three-star hotels compared to 25 five-star and eight four-star hotels.

Marriott has announced four five-star flags so far, including Le Meridien, a JW, a Westin and a W hotel. Smaller, more exclusive operators such as Nobu are also landing on the island. On the more affordable end, Emaar-backed Rove will open on Marjan Island and a home-grown brand called Earth, originally co-founded by the emirate’s now-tourism chief, will open its own resorts as well.

Bremner explained: “Wynn is our game changer. It causes an investment into infrastructure that lets us appeal to a wider audience. Off the back of Wynn, our tourism sector has flourished. Lots of opportunities are here now and a lot of partners want to be here in RAK.”

As the leading public catalyst for arts and culture in St. Louis, the Regional Arts Commission leverages the power of creativity to strengthen and enrich our community.

The Regional Arts Commission envisions a region where every resident has the freedom, resources, and opportunities to enjoy a creative life – to share and celebrate their stories, art, and culture and feel a sense of belonging wherever they live, work, or play.

In this more equitable world, every culture is valued, supported and enabled to grow and thrive. A person’s well-being and success in life are not determined by race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, national origin, religion, ability, class, or status.
