The Postgraduate Diploma in Travel Medicine (PGDipTravMed) builds on the PGCertTravMed. It adds to the foundations of travel medicine by exploring tropical infectious diseases in greater depth. Elective papers cover wilderness and expedition medicine and migrant and refugee health. As such, the diploma is an advanced nationally-recognised qualification for health professionals who practise in the field of travel medicine.
Graduates of the programme will have in-depth knowledge of the epidemiology, diagnosis and management of tropical infectious diseases. Depending on elective paper choice they will have skills in advising travellers planning extreme travel to resource poor and/or wilderness environments. The health needs of refugees and migrants and their management within the New Zealand context is covered in another elective paper.
Students come from differing professional backgrounds (including medical, nursing and pharmacy), as a consequence of this interprofessional nature of the course, the graduate will learn skills with respect to their individual disciplines
The Postgraduate Diploma in Travel Medicine (PGDipTravMed) is available through Distance Learning.
The programme of study shall comprise papers to the value of 120 points; three core papers, GENA713, GENA 714 and GENA 719 are compulsory. The remaining paper shall be selected from GENA 720, HASC 417, PRHC 702.
A candidate who has completed the requirements for the Postgraduate Certificate in Travel Medicine shall be credited with those papers in the programme for the diploma which have been previously passed for the certificate.
Note: Students should normally enrol initially for the Postgraduate Certificate programme before proceeding to the diploma.
Entry criteria
Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences). Every candidate shall be a graduate or possess an appropriate health professional qualification requiring at least three years’ full-time tertiary study.

A new era for travel medicine education
The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant impact on travel medicine practice and practitioners alike with many individuals leaving the field altogether. Yet, when travellers return for advice in abundance, good care will be more important than ever. The standard of care and the quality of travel medicine trainers is vital as the Faculty of Travel Medicine highlighted in their Good Practice Guidelines for Providing a Travel Medicine Service in October 2020 found at https://rcpsg.ac.uk/travel-medicine/good-practice-guidance-for-providing-a-travel-health-service .
In the UK, formal education in travel medicine began at the University of Glasgow in 1995 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Travel Medicine, which subsequently led onto a Master of Science degree in the subject – I was one of the students in this cohort to progress through the courses. It was the first course of its type in the world. I recall the experience was hard and given we had no internet access at that time or use of e mail, course work was returned for marking by postal service; for me, a 50 mile train journey to London to the Bristish Library and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to gather any required references; there were few text books on the subject and I had to learn how to use a computer to develop the many assignments! On reflection the course was possibly overassessed, but the programme rigorous, work thorough, very comprehensive and provided me with an excellent base from which I have subsequently developed my full time career in travel medicine since! Many specialists in the field were involved and the inaugural meeting had a keynote speech from the late and dear Prof. Jay Keystone, who travelled over from Canada to deliver his lecture – the first time I had ever heard him and was blown away. Those who recall Jay speak will understand that emotion. Specialists in the field who have since taken the training include Dr. Dipti Patel, Director of the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) and Prof. Gerard Flaherty, President Elect of the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM), but there are many former diplomates around the world who undertook this ground breaking training – the initial idea created by the late Dr Cameron Lockie MBE.
But time moves on, the Diploma moved to Health Protection Scotland and then to the Royal College of Physicians of Surgeons where it now still resides. Many other courses have been developed over time including ones in the UK in Sheffield (no longer available), Liverpool and abroad for example in South Africa, but of shorter duration.
Today one similar selection of courses is available from the University Otago in New Zealand at Certificate, Diploma and Masters level in Travel Medicine studied within the Department of Health Care and General Practice. The courses are led by the well known travel medicine specialist Dr Jenny Visser and Claire Wong (herself a student of the Diploma in Travel Medicine at the Royal Free and University College London, then the Masters at Sheffield Hallam University). These opportunities have been runing for a while as online courses, but with some compulsory residential attendance. However due to COVID restrictions, online or hybrid options have been offered. For more details see https://www.otago.ac.nz/courses/qualifications/mtravmed.html .
A Graduate Certificate of Travel Medicine is also available from the James Cook Univeristy in Australia with current President of the ISTM, Prof. Peter Leggat a lecturer. Studied over one year, this part time 12 month course is accredited as an approved qualification by The Faculty of Travel Medicine of the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine (ACTM) for their fellowship program. To see details of the course go to https://www.jcu.edu.au/courses/graduate-certificate-of-travel-medicine and https://secure.jcu.edu.au/app/studyfinder/?subject=TM5512 . Details of progression through the ACTM can be found at https://www.tropmed.org/faculty-of-travel-medicine/
Progressing the concept of this key document, Good Practice Guidance for Providing a Travel Health Service , and taking the opportunity to completely reconsider the provision of training in the new digital era with the progress we've all made in 2020/2021, the Faculty of Travel Medicine have launched two new courses to prepare practitioners, with a third course at Masters level in the pipeline.
The Professional Development Certificate in Travel Medicine is a course completely online with four modules studies on a modern e learning platform. Modular tutorials are provided over Teams and the support of a personal adviser to each student helps to create the missing elements a face to face course may offer, whilst making the study far more accessible for students around the world. Assessments within the course are deliberately pitched not only to demonstrate understanding and knowledge in the subject, but to also develop some practical tools for the students to use in future practice. A certificate of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is awarded to successful students. The course is designed to be one of enjoyment and ideal preparation to progress onto the more academically demanding RCPSG Postgraduate Diploma in Travel Medicine.
This course has eight modules with two residential components – with the possibility to attend these as a hybrid option although face to face is recommended. The course commences in January 2022 with the first residential being held online on this occasion due to the pandemic. This course has a credit rating from Glasgow Caledonian Univeristy (GCU) for 120 credits at Masters level 11 on the Scottish Credit Qualification Framework (SCQF), and the Diploma is awarded by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. Assessment is through stimulating academic pieces of work submitted at the end of each module and although there are no written exams required, there will be Objective Structured Clinical Examaminations (OSCEs) towards the end of the study to assess practitioners’ clinical skills and knowledge. The course covers a broad range of subjects designed to cover all areas of travel medicine practice as highlighted in the brochure at https://rcpsg.ac.uk/documents/etpd/1786-postgrad-tm-a4-0621/file . Students will be supported by advisers, attend monthly online seminars and have access to an extensive range of interactive materials on a modern e learning platform. Successful students will also be eligible to be admitted to the College as Members of the Faculty of Travel Medicine and able to use post nominals MFTM RCPS(Glasg). Work is also in progress for successful students to progress onto a Masters degree in the subject at GCU if they so wish, where they would undertake a dissertation, but would also have a supervisor from the Faculty of Travel Medicine as well.
Travel Medicine is a fascinating and important subject, little understood by the travelling public or indeed by many of our professional colleagues in the medical world. Having just demitted from a three year term as Dean of the Faculty of Travel Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, I hope the courses and opportunities we've developed through my term in office, inspire some potential students to study this exciting subject, just as it did me at the start of my career 26 years ago!

3 good reasons to study
PART TIME ONLINE PROGRAMME
The programme can be started at different points throughout the year, with the opportunity to sit for the final written assessment and final MCQ exam in either May or September each year.
Dr Rima Makarem, Chair of NaTHNaC, is keen to stress the benefit that the course can bring to professionals. She said: “The course has been designed to work alongside professional commitments and offers a unique opportunity to benefit from interaction withtravel health experts from the UK from any part of the world. We look forward to our first students beginning the modules, which will set them up to further develop their career in an exciting area of medicine.”
Programme Outline
The Diploma in Travel Health (DipTH) is awarded by LSTM as a Professional Diploma that aims to equip new experienced practitioners with knowledge, skills and competencies in travel health.
The programme provides a platform for confident practice through interactive online learning, an opportunity for reflection, and continuing professional development with subject specialists and peers. It is open to registered doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and travel and expedition health professionals who wish to further develop their travel risk assessment and problem-solving skills in clinical practice.
The programme has been jointly developed by the LSTM and the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC), and is delivered through a series of four online modules, each with a corresponding summative assessment, culminating in a final online MCQ exam and online structured knowledge examination (OSKE).
The four modules are:
- Travel Vaccination Principles and Practice (TVPP)
- Governance and Safety in Travel Health (G&STH)
- Malaria Prevention in Travel Health (MPTH)
- Hazards in Travel Health (HITH)
The DipTH is based around the successful completion of four core modules plus the four summative assessments must be successfully completed over 6-24 months in order to undertake the OSKE and MCQ exams for award of the diploma. More information can be found on the programme specification which includes details on all assessments.
All components are delivered via on-line distance learning.
Online Learning
We are using an Asynchronous learning model. Asynchronous e-learning involves recorded material, individual exercises, group work and online discussion boards delivered via the virtual learning environment (VLE). Each of the four separate modules that make up the diploma is delivered in a series of weekly blocks, two of the modules are 3 week courses, two are four week courses. Students can complete each weekly block at their own pace (expected 10-15 hours per week, each module), by using the internet as a support tool rather than having to “attend” online classes at a specific time.
Studying online is a first for many people. This course will help you discover the skills required for online study and evaluate your own study skillset. You’ll also experience online communities and how you benefit from flexible study arrangements while still being supported by dedicated tutors. Studying online takes advantage of technology to simulate or improve upon traditional methods of teaching.
We use a number of innovative tools to support your learning whilst studying with us, at the centre of which is Brightspace. Brightspace brings together learners, tutors and learning materials in a simple to use web based learning management system which many students tell us is the easiest study platform they have used. Brightspace is designed to give you easy access to everything you need to complete your studies whilst enabling you to interact with your fellow learners and be part of the wider LSTM community. Brightspace is mobile friendly and supports you even in low bandwidth settings.
LSTM also has a number of other technologies available which enable you to access video based learning resources ( Panopto ), easily study on your tablet device even whilst offline ( Binder ) and work effectively online with your peers ( Wiggio ). Each of these technologies has been designed to be user friendly and intuitive to use and you will have a dedicated team of staff to support you in the use of these. You will also have an Office 365 account and be able to download the latest version of Microsoft Office for the duration of your studies.

At present this course is the only Professional Diploma qualification available within the UK.
The course has been designed to work alongside professional commitments and offers a unique opportunity to benefit from interaction withtravel health experts from the UK from any part of the world. We look forward to our first students beginning the modules, which will set them up to further develop their career in an exciting area of medicine. Dr Rima Makarem, Chair of NaTHNaC
I chose to study the Diploma in Travel Health to enhance my knowledge of the risks that travellers face and learn how to provide advice on staying healthy whilst abroad. The course covered a wide variety of subject areas and followed a structured online teaching format. The written assignments reinforced the content taught within each module with a focus on evidence-based medicine. In my role as coordinating doctor at International SOS, which provides remote medical assistance to clients across the globe, it is essential to have a broad knowledge of diverse environments and their ever-changing health threats. I now feel well equipped to assist clients prior to, during and following travel and hope to pursue further studies with LSTM in the future. Karisha, Doctor.
Worked well for me, working flexibly and from home. The tutors were very understanding of my other commitments, particularly due to COVID-19 pandemic, and able to apply pragmatic allowances when deadlines couldn’t be made. anonymous feedback
A course such as this would normally involve regular travel, significant accommodation costs and adding even more time commitment. The programme had already been set up, well before the pandemic, so it ran very smoothly. anonymous feedback
This course has provided me with the confidence to step out of my normal clinical role and provide advice and epidemiological information to allow Defence healthcare staff and Commanders to appreciate the difficulties associated with serving overseas or deploying on military operations, particularly during the pandemic. Alun, Army Dentist.
The Travel Health Diploma was a valuable learning experience for myself as it challenged my evidence based practice at work. I have been delivering Travel Heath services for 18 years but have never had a formal qualification and learnt new things!. This course suited me as it was all online and that meant I could study when I wanted. It was split into 4 modules which helped keep everything methodical. Philippa and Kath (tutors) were very friendly easy to approach and always emailed back promptly and advised us as necessary, I felt very supported by them. Having contact with students from around the world who were also on the course made it more interesting and you learn from them also. If you have an interest or passion for travel medicine then this the course for you. Jas, Nurse.
Coming from an infectious disease background, it was only natural to apply for this course. The course layout is well thought out, interactive and provides enough time and space for personal development in the subject of travel health. The staff are extremely helpful, very responsive to your questions and eager to teach. Most of them have many years of experience in travel related health under their belt and this was very evident during the entire duration of the course. This diploma helps you to focus on the essentials of this emerging new specialty but at the same time equip you with enough information to further your knowledge and feel comfortable providing advise to prospective travellers. I would recommend this course to any one willing to expand on their travel health knowledge and those who are managing prospective travellers or returned travellers in their clinics. From personal experience this has helped me to manage travel related questions better and provided opportunities for global networking with other travel medicine experts. Ramon, Doctor.
I very much appreciated the Professional Diploma in Travel Health and its online format was perfect for my needs. The tutors were extremely supportive and the written assessments particularly useful to consolidate and enhance learning. Although UK travel health guidelines formed the core of the curriculum, the course and assessments were designed to be appropriate for practitioners from non-UK settings; contributions from other contexts were actively encouraged. I am regularly using the knowledge and skills I learned on this course. This qualification has given me the skills and confidence to make policy change in both of my roles and has enhanced the quality of the travel health advice I give in my practice. The course also developed my skills in reflective practice, which is an essential requirement of my professional regulator. Carolyn, Doctor

I had a beautiful experience at JCU. The support was extraordinary and beyond my expectations. Now when I have the opportunity to work in the public health sector I can do things much more differently compared to when I was working without the knowledge gained in my Public Health and Tropical Medicine degree.
