Which is Correct: “Yesterday Night” or “Last Night”?

If you’re looking for the correct phrase to use when talking about what happened the night before, you might be torn between using “yesterday night” and “last night.”

When determining the correct phrase to use when discussing the previous night, both “yesterday night” and “last night” are correct. “Last night” is used more, sounding more natural and feeling as though the events happened a short time ago. Using “yesterday night” sounds more formal.

yesterday night vs last night

The phrase “last night” came about during the 1800s when Shakespeare was still alive and was very common in everyday conversation. Alternatively, “yesterday night” didn’t come about until after Shakespeare had passed away.

Before “yesterday night” was introduced, “yesternight” was a common phrase. When this phrase eventually fell out of the common conversation and “yesterday night” came to be, “last night” was too common of a phrase for it to become the dominant one used.

What Does “Last Night” Mean?

“Last night” is a phrase used to refer to the time in the late evening, usually after 7 pm, until the early morning hours, usually around 4 am of the previous day. This phrase is used to talk about something that happened the night before the current day.

You can use “last night” when you’re referring to somewhere you went, something you did, or any number of things as long as they happened the night before. It isn’t correct to use “last night” when you’re talking about something you did during the current day or earlier the day before.

Using the phrase “last night” allows you to give your listener or reader a broad time frame for events that took place the night before.

If you are unsure of how to use the phrase “last night” in a sentence, you can look at these sentences for some correct examples of its use.

  • He forgot to wash the dishes last night.
  • I didn’t hear you come home last night.
  • She went to the store last night to pick up groceries for the week.
  • The seminar I attended on the latest medical research into migraines ran late last night.
  • Last night I put the leftovers from dinner in the fridge.
  • The two of them got off of their flight last night and went to a hotel to sleep.
  • Isabelle and Louis were supposed to come to my party last night, but they both canceled at the last minute.

Is it Acceptable to Use “Yesterday Night”?

It is perfectly acceptable to use “yesterday night” in a sentence. It is less commonly used as it sounds too formal for casual conversation because “last night” has been commonly used for over 200 years.

What Does “Yesterday Night” Mean?

“Yesterday night” is used to reference or refer to a period of time from the evening of the day before into the early morning hours, typically spanning from around 7 pm to around 4 am. This phrase gives your reader or listener a rough idea of the time frame you are talking to them about.

This phrase came into use after the phrase “yesternight” was phased out of common speech during the mid-1800s. Due to the fact that “yesternight” and “yesterday night” are quite similar, it never picked up enough traction to become extremely regularly used.

You should avoid using “yesterday night” when referring to something that happened earlier in the day yesterday or when referring to something that happened during your current day as “yesterday night” is used to describe past events that happened during the night.

Here are some great examples of how to use the phrase “yesterday night” correctly in a sentence.

  • Yesterday night I made reservations for us to eat at that new restaurant that opened.
  • Were you able to meet up with Deborah yesterday night?
  • I spent yesterday night camping out in the woods under the stars.
  • That dinner party you hosted yesterday night was absolutely amazing and we need to have one again sometime soon.
  • Why didn’t you give the kids a bath yesterday night?
  • I wanted to go see a movie at the drive-in theater yesterday night but it started raining so they closed early.
  • I almost forgot to mail out those letters you gave me, but I remembered to send them out yesterday night before I went to bed.

Why Do We Say “Last Night” and Not “Last Morning”?

“Last night” works in the English language because the time span when talking about “last night” only specifically references the night before. When you say “last morning”, there could be two different mornings you are referring to based on the time of day, as the last morning could have been the current day’s morning and not yesterday’s morning.

If you say “last morning” you could be talking about the morning that happened yesterday or the morning that happened today, making your listener unsure of when you mean. Saying “last night” only gives on time you could mean.

What is the Difference Between “Last Night” and “Yesterday Evening”?

The difference between “last night” and “yesterday evening” is the amount of time they cover. “Last night” refers to the times around 7 pm to 4 am the night before whereas “yesterday evening” refers to 6 pm to 9 pm the night before.

“Last night” and “yesterday evening” can share the same time, but have different time spans. Saying “last night” gives your listener a wider range for the events you are discussing to have occurred, whereas using “yesterday evening” gives them a more specific time frame.

You may also like: Last Evening or Yesterday Evening – Which Is Correct?

Does “Tonight’ and “Last Night” Mean the Same Thing?

“Tonight” and “last night” do not mean the same thing. “Last night” refers to the time the night before whereas “tonight refers to the night that on the current day that hasn’t yet happened.

When you use the word “tonight” you are talking about something that has yet to happen. When using the phrase “last night” you are talking about something that has already happened and is now in the past.

You’ve been exposed to someone with COVID-19: What should you do?

Should you be tested what kind of test what are the odds that you got it, too, share this story.

By VCU News staff

The phone rings. It’s your friend. She says she tested positive for COVID-19 — and you spent time together just the other day. What should you do?

Michael Stevens , M.D., an infectious disease specialist at VCU Health, explains what to do if a friend, family member or contact tracer tells you that you may be infected.

Do I need to be tested, or can I wait and see if I get symptoms?

If you were within 6 feet of your friend for a total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period, or you had close contact with her secretions — for instance, you were coughed or sneezed on, you shared drinking glasses or utensils, you kissed, etc. — the Virginia Department of Health recommends that you stay at home (self-quarantine) for 14 days since you last saw her and practice social distancing, staying at least 6 feet away from other people in your household.

If you get tested, a negative result doesn’t mean you can end your quarantine. It can take up to 14 days to develop symptoms or test positive. If you develop symptoms during your quarantine, get tested.

What if I don’t get tested?

Self-quarantine and social distance for 14 days since your last contact with your friend.

Should I call my doctor?

If you develop symptoms, call your doctor for advice. Even if you don’t have symptoms, your doctor can offer guidance on what to do.

[Editor’s note:  VCU students who develop symptoms consistent with COVID-19, test positive for COVID-19, or have been informed they need to isolate or quarantine must contact the VCU COVID-19 call center at 1-804-MYCOVID to be connected with Student Health Services. Employees who develop symptoms consistent with COVID-19, test positive, or have been informed they need to isolate or quarantine must contact the VCU COVID-19 call center to be connected with Employee Health. Student Health Services or Employee Health will provide additional instructions regarding testing, isolation and/or quarantine.]

Where can I get the test? Does it matter where I get it?

Many places in the community offer testing. Tests are of widely different quality, and many can provide inaccurate results (false positives or false negatives). If you think you might have COVID-19, a PCR test is best. You can call your doctor’s office for advice on where to get tested.

[Editor’s note: VCU community members who report symptoms to either Student Health Services or Employee Health may be referred for COVID-19 testing at a location on campus. This will be conducted at no cost to students or employees.]

Should I get the rapid test, the PCR test or the antibody test? What’s the difference?

The PCR test is the most accurate for detecting active infection. The rapid (antigen) test may be less accurate, and false-positive results are a concern. However, in many places these tests produce results more quickly. The antibody test can only tell if you previously had the infection. It won’t tell you whether you currently have COVID-19. Your doctor can help you decide which test is right for you.

Do I need to be tested immediately, or should I wait a few days?

If you have symptoms, get tested right away.

I tried to schedule a test online, but the time slots were filled. What do I do now?

Call your doctor’s office. They may have advice on where to get tested.

Is the COVID test free?

COVID-19 tests are available at no cost throughout the U.S. Still, it’s wise to discuss this wherever you seek testing to find out if any charges might apply.

Do I need to tell my boss or anyone else that I’ve been exposed to someone with COVID-19?

Let your boss know. If you have spent significant time in close contact with anyone else (as defined above) since being exposed, you should also let them know.

I tested negative. Do I still need to self-quarantine?

Yes, test results can be negative early in infection. Self-quarantine for the full 14 days from the time of last contact with your friend.

If I self-quarantine, can I go for walks in my neighborhood, just by myself?

No. Stay at home, isolated, as much as possible. You can go outside on your own property if you can reliably stay at least 6 feet away from other people. When in doubt about whether a potential activity is safe or not, call your local health department for advice.

What if someone in my household was exposed? Do I stay away from them until they test negative? Do I stay away from them for two weeks? What if it’s your child?

Try to socially isolate as much as possible. This means staying at least 6 feet away, if you can. If your child was exposed, this may not be possible. In that case, consider wearing masks as much as possible. Everyone in your household should practice good hand hygiene. Wash your hands often with soap and water. Clean high-touch household surfaces frequently. These include faucets and kitchen countertops, light switches, doorknobs and the TV remote. Everyone should monitor for symptoms and get tested if any symptoms arise.

VCU Health  is conducting a clinical trial  to test a medication that would prevent COVID-19 infection among uninfected people. If someone in your household tests positive for COVID-19, other members of your household may be eligible to participate in the trial within 96 hours of the diagnosis. If that matches your situation, call  (804) 628-1072  to see if you qualify for the trial.

If I self-quarantine, how will I get groceries?

Many grocery stores offer home delivery. If this is not an option and food access is an issue, call your local health department. They can help identify services to help you gain access to food during quarantine.

[Editor’s note: VCU student residents in isolation and quarantine housing will first receive a health and a meal kit with nonperishable items such as liquids, soups and snacks. Fresh meals will then be delivered daily from Dining Services. In isolation housing, residents will receive a full linen set with a pillow in their isolation room. For more information, visit  housing.vcu.edu/together/ .]

Should I tell the people I visited with before I knew I’d been exposed to someone with COVID-19? Do they need to self-quarantine or be tested?

Let people know they might have been exposed if you spent 15 minutes or more within 6 feet of them within a 24-hour period, or if you shared secretions, as previously mentioned. The Virginia Department of Health does not recommend they self-quarantine or get tested, but they should practice careful hand hygiene, clean surfaces at home frequently and seek testing if they develop symptoms.

What are the chances that I got COVID-19 from my friend?

It’s hard to say. It all depends on the degree and duration of exposure. SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is highly contagious.

If I did get COVID-19 from my friend, what are the chances that I passed it on before I knew I had it? Does it matter how much time I spent with my friend?

It does matter how much time you spent with your friend. It’s hard to estimate the risk of you having passed on the virus to others. Some people with COVID-19 have little to no symptoms. People should wear masks when outside of their homes, especially when indoors, and try to stay at least 6 feet away from others. These things will help reduce spreading the infection and will help keep you and others safe.

My friend developed only mild symptoms. Will my symptoms be mild, too?

Everyone is different. Your friend’s symptoms won’t predict how the virus will affect you.

If I test positive, will I be immune from COVID-19 – or can I get it again? Will I be able to go out without a face mask? Will I still have to social distance?

Although reinfection appears rare at this point, it has been reported. At this time we don’t know how often, or for how long, infection will lead to immunity. Even if you have been infected, continue to wear a face mask when outside your house, especially when indoors, and try to stay at least 6 feet away from others.

If no one has told me they tested positive for COVID-19, but I develop  symptoms such as cold, flu or allergy symptoms , should I be tested for COVID-19 or wait it out? Should I tell people I visited with recently?

It’s not possible to differentiate COVID-19 from cold, flu or allergy  symptoms . Call your doctor for advice on testing.

People Are Sharing The Exact Moment They Knew Their Friendship Was Over With Their Best Friend

"She met me in the park and presented me with a Google Doc list of complaints about me."

Fabiana Buontempo

BuzzFeed Staff

Whether a friend has been in your life for a year or 30 years, it's always difficult to end a friendship, but sometimes it is necessary. Recently, members of the BuzzFeed Community shared their experiences with ending a friendship. Here is what some had to say:

Note: Some responses have been edited for length and/or clarity.

1. "My best friend and I had been best friends since university. We met at a mutual friend's wedding and just bonded, became inseparable, hung out, and had fun. We were always there for each other during breakups and other major life milestones and events. When she needed a place to stay, my parents invited her to move in, and she did for months. After she moved out, my mom still cooked things she liked and sent them to her. But it was always about her, everything. It got to the point that I stopped sharing things about my life because even when I did, it always ended up being about her."

"When she got married, things started to change. I didn't like her husband very much because she would always tell me how badly he treated her, so being a best friend, I started to dislike this man who hurt my BFF. When her mother died, I took time off work and paid for a flight I couldn't afford so that I could be there with her. Then she told me she wanted to be left alone to process her feelings, so I did that. I would still check up on her once in a while to see if she was ok. Then, almost a year later, I told her I was coming to the city she was living in with her husband for four days and would love to meet.

She made plans and canceled, then said her husband was sick (he had the flu), so I said, 'Oh sure, I hope he gets well soon.' I don't know what I said was wrong because she blew up and started saying that I was being sarcastic and that she was done with me (keep in mind she was the one who always had issues and picked fights and also kept going to and leaving therapy). So I didn't stop her. I thought I had been through enough toxicity for 15 years with her that I guess I was over it, too. Since then, we have texted each other two times for our birthdays, which was last year. Don't think I'll text her this year, and I don't expect her to text me either."

2. "I had the same best friend from the age of 2 to 19. We were INSEPARABLE. People thought we were sisters because we even grew to look alike. We went through everything together. Then she got this absolute loser of a boyfriend who sold weed. I knew he did because he sold to my housemate on many occasions. This wasn't his only red flag — he was a walking red flag — a real loser. So I gently told her. She called me a liar and believed his BS over me. She believed this loser she had known for a few months over me, her best friend since forever. That day, I walked away and never went back. She's tried several times to reconcile since then, but that bond is too broken for me to continue. She's still with him too, and he's still a loser."

3. "My best friend of 40 years had an affair with a co-worker. Apparently, every time she would lie and see him, she told her husband she would see me (we live about an hour apart). I never knew any of this. So when her husband found out, he was pissed at me too."

"Instead of telling him the truth that I had nothing to do with it. She tried to spin it in her favor. She never called to apologize. Instead, she sent a note tucked into a sympathy card she sent when my dad died. That was it for me."

— sportychair82

4. "My friend had two unplanned pregnancies back to back with a bad boyfriend turned fiancée. All the while, she brushed off my three-year struggles with infertility. I finally got pregnant right around the time of her wedding. I couldn't keep up with the financial obligations of being a bridesmaid (bridal shower, bachelorette party, a bridesmaid dress, hotel room at the venue, etc.) I told her I couldn't be in her wedding, but I could attend as a guest, and she told me I should have planned my pregnancy better. She went off the rails after that by calling my mom and telling her I was going to harm myself because I was depressed (I wasn't), body-shaming me and my husband, and calling me a selfish two-faced bitch. I blocked her on all fronts. My only regret was that I didn't end it sooner."

5. "I had a friend for 20+ years that I had to divorce. She got super into conspiracy theories to the point of being aggressive to others who didn’t believe the way she did or if we didn’t want to talk about freaking big pharma every single conversation. I tolerated it for a long time until I couldn’t tolerate it anymore."

— tamarraevanssluga

6. "My best friend — inseparable, bonded by laughter and trauma — met me in the park and presented me with a Google Doc list of complaints about me."

Two women in casual attire sitting and conversing, one holding a smartphone

7. "My breaking point was when I realized how extremely attached she was to me, not in a BFF way but in a codependent way, and would demand my attention at all times. If I were late for something (I'm a married mom), she would make me feel so bad that I’ve cried multiple times over it. I think what set it in was when I found out my dad’s terminal illness had escalated. Her response was to not even look up from her phone but say, 'Ugh, I wish mine would die,' and then cry incessantly that a guy she’d been sleeping with for a few weeks was moving away and didn’t profess his love for her like she thought he would. I had to stop talking to her a few months ago for my mental health, and it’s honestly been nice, and I hope she gets the support she needs that I don’t think anyone can provide."

— giagiagia

8. "I uninvited my two best friends to my wedding (as maids of honor too) after my mother shared a Facebook message conversation with them and another friend that threw a surprise bridal shower for me. My now husband had been telling me for months that they were bad friends, but I didn’t want to let ten years of history go. It was the toughest thing I did, but I didn’t want their toxicity to ruin my special day. They never responded, never apologized, and never reached out. Hardest but best thing I could do for myself."

9. "I told my best friend from kindergarten that my grandmother passed away, and she sent a sad face emoji. That was it. Not even an 'I’m sorry' to go along with it."

— google_102850322362993091708

10. "We are in our 30s now. We had been friends or at least knew each other since first grade. We were the closest in high school. There were always subtle put-downs and being asked these devil's advocate questions regarding issues about my values/worldview, to which I felt she already knew me well enough to know how I would respond. I thought it wasn't ever coming from a place of genuine curiosity — rather more antagonistic. I'm not a fighter, so I let things slide and harbored resentment. The other day, I told her we should take a break after a very small issue, but I feel bad because I never verbalized my feelings in the past about how she has made me feel. So now it might just appear that I'm overreacting. I just feel like I can't put up with it anymore."

11. "I parted ways with a friend I’d known since we were in grade school. We did everything together, but she had some real anger management issues and was very vindictive and vengeful. As I got into my late 20s, I realized how much it dictated my mood as well as my relationships with my other friends. They later told me they only 'tolerated' her because they didn’t want to lose or upset me. When this ex-friend got engaged, she asked me to be in her wedding party. Not long after, my fiancé got very sick, and I had to cancel a double date we had scheduled."

"We rescheduled, and then I ended up having to cancel AGAIN because my fiancé was in and out of the emergency room four weekends in a row. Finally, she sent me a text telling me she didn’t think I was being a good bridesmaid and that I wasn’t giving her wedding (or her) the attention she expected — you know, because I was too busy worrying if my now-husband was going to live or die.

Her message sent me into a tizzy because I couldn’t understand how someone could be so self-centered. I told her I was done with our friendship. She begged me to stay in the wedding party (because the only other person she had was her sister). I told her I’d only be there physically. I haven’t seen or talked to her since her wedding in 2015. However, several months later, she showed up at my engagement party uninvited. Crazy."

12. "This is about my BFF and I of almost 20 years. I flew a few thousand miles to be with her for her birthday after we both moved to different cities, and it was supposed to be a joint birthday celebration because my birthday was a couple of weeks later. We went to Disneyland, the spa, multiple dinners, brunch, etc., over multiple days. I have a degenerative condition, and it started to show but didn't derail our plans that much."

"The last night and morning, she was really mean to me, my partner, and her own partner. She threw a tantrum and wouldn't leave her room. Refused to say why. I've repeated constantly throughout our friendship that my #1 thing was just being upfront and honest, so I assumed it was related to other stresses. Four days later, she said it was because I didn't make her birthday 'special enough' and refused to talk with me or explain. Then she got mad at me for being upset that my spending thousands of dollars and taking time off of work wasn't enough for her."

13. "This hits home for me right now. My best friend of 10 years stopped talking to me because their bf (my flatmate, who I set them up with) told me to move out because I have depression. He told me I was bringing his mood down by being sad (alone in my room, not even in shared spaces). This is after a long period of depression brought on by a traumatic experience he knew about. While I was going through this, he did not even ask if I was okay or check up on me. My best friend told me they would always be there for me, and a couple of weeks later, they dropped off the face of the earth with no contact. Meanwhile, the flatmate has been lying about me to everyone he can and participating in online harassment directed at me. Who needs enemies with friends like that? The best part is my best friend has depression too, and if they and their bf ever move in together, I’m certain that a bad breakup will follow. All I have to say is best of luck!"

— anonymous88

14. "My best friend of 20 years got married in 2022. I just now found out. When confronted, she said she thought she told me. She then let me know she was getting a divorce, and I was abandoning her like everyone else. I'm not sure what she expected when she never reached out or wanted to hang out. It's always me trying to talk or see her. It's been like this for years."

Bride 'Shocked' After Best Friend Books Her Own Wedding on the Same Weekend

The bride's fiancé explained the situation in a recent post on Reddit's Wedding Shaming subreddit

Erin Clack is a Staff Editor for PEOPLE. She has been writing about fashion, parenting and pop culture for more than 15 years.

A bride was "shocked" to find out her best friend inexplicably decided to book her own wedding on the very same weekend.

In a recent Reddit post on the popular subreddit Wedding Shaming, the bride's fiancé explained that the couple has had their September 2024 wedding date and venue booked since September 2022. The bride even asked her best friend to serve as maid of honor on her big day.

However, in December, the friend — who got engaged last summer — suddenly informed the bride of her desire to also have a September wedding this year.

"My fiancée was a bit shocked and said, 'It's not really my place to say you can't have a wedding in the same month as I do,' " the groom wrote in his post. "Then, a week later, she says in a friends group chat that she booked her venue."

As it turns out, the venue is an hour's drive from where most of their mutual friend group lives, and the maid of honor's wedding would be taking place the day after the bride's Friday wedding. The bride was asked to be a bridesmaid, but she turned down her friend's request due to the early start time of the ceremony on Saturday.

"It's going to be difficult to attend the wedding, let alone be a bridesmaid," the groom wrote, before explaining that their friends are also finding the situation challenging.

"The friend group all expressed the same thing. My fiancée also rescinded her MOH request due to this friend being too busy to properly be a MOH. Some friends expressed they don't know if they can financially do two bridesmaids [back-to-back] like this."

Making the situation even more sticky, the bride's friend booked some of the same vendors as well.

"She's using our photographer and florist because she doesn't have time to research so just piggybacked onto our research," the groom explained.

"What an illogical move by this friend to book the day after her best friend's wedding," he added.

The groom's post sparked a lively discussion in the comments, with many people expressing their disbelief at the best friend's actions.

"That is not a friend — did she really think everyone would jump ship from your wedding to do hers?" one Redditor wrote.

Another person chimed in, "All I can think is that this bridesmaid is trying to compete with OP bride. Who in their right mind would do this?? Is this some power play to see who likes her more??"

Other commenters questioned the logistical complexity of the friend's plans.

"When does this friend intend to do her rehearsal if almost her entire bridal party is in a wedding the night before?? Or any wedding prep that entire week??" one person wrote. "What was she thinking from a logistical standpoint because there is no way they are starting on time that early the day after someone else’s wedding."

After receiving a flood of feedback on his post, the groom later posted a surprising update about the double-wedding dilemma.

"Friend sent out save the dates with the September date (day after ours) on it a couple of weeks ago. This morning, this friend contacted her guests saying she had gotten the date wrong, and it's actually August," he shared.

When the groom's fiancée asked her friend about the date swap, she told her she "moved the date due to the September wedding not working out but didn't want to say the reason to her family."

The groom concluded his update by thanking people for weighing in and sharing their opinions and advice with him.

"It was def a little cathartic moment for us seeing the world call this friend out," he wrote. "Now with the bridal showers and bachelorettes should be interesting lol."
