Your body is perfect just the way it is and there is nothing more important than dressing to make yourself feel as confident as possible. You deserve to love the hell out of yourself and your vacation.

As a plus-size woman and an avid traveler, I’m no stranger to the last minute packing panic – the overpacking, the panic buying, the ability to spend almost as much on the clothes as the trip itself, the worries, the fears and the ‘maybe I shouldn’t go’ moments – but at the end of it all, the trip is always worth it.

Carry-On-Sized Travel Backpacks

Pack for trips of one week or more without checking a bag.

  • Thick comfortable straps
  • Easy to organize
  • Durable, waterproof fabric
  • Backed by our Worldwide Warranty

Travel is for everyone and with growing movements to make travel more inclusive like #fatgirlstraveling and #plussizetraveltoo, there is no better time to shrug off your worries and take that trip you’ve always dreamt of.

So, off the back off my most recent 7-month trip around Africa, Asia and the United States, here are my top tips for finding your stress free travel wardrobe as a plus-sized woman.

plus women's travel clothes

Two Points, Before We Start:

1. Larger clothes = more material

There is no escaping the fact that larger clothes take up more room, and that means taking fewer items. ‘Multi-purpose’ is the name of the game here ladies.

2. It’s not impossible to buy plus size clothes all over the world, but it’s not always easy.

News Flash: Fat people exist in every country! But not every country has easily accessible plus size clothing stores, so it’s worth spending the time to properly plan what you pack so you don’t get caught short.

Get the Foundations Right

(if you only have time to read one section of this article, make it this one) .

The three following items are the holy trinity of plus-size travel packing , I promise you, they could make or break your trip.

The Unmentionables

Underwear , love it or loathe it, just don’t skip over thinking about it when you’re planning what to pack.

Having the wrong underwear that makes you feel uncomfortable, like bras that chafe in hot weather or knickers that don’t stay up when you move around, will totally distract you from living your best vacation life.

Hands up if you swell up in hot weather like me? Breathable and moister-wicking undies will be your best friend for comfort, keeping cool, and tp help to prevent skin irritations that occur in warm & wet environments.

Chub Rub

Traveling usually means moving your body more, and moving your body more can lead to chafing, ranging from the uncomfortable to the downright painful, especially in tropical climates that are hot and humid.

Luckily, there are a lot of precautions you can take to prevent chub rub from ruining your trip.

Applying anti-chafing creams, baby powder and even deodorant to potentially affected areas will help but for the dreaded thigh rub, I opt for wearing some thin cotton biker-style shorts under skirts and dresses. Find a colour that best matches your skin tone if you’re self-conscious about them showing (but don’t worry, my shorts have been the envy of my fellow every-size travelers all over the world!)

Shoes, Glorious Shoes

We’ve established that travel usually means more movement and more movement means more work for your feet. Take it from a fat girl who didn’t pack properly supporting shoes and spent months recovering from painful Plantar Fasciitis, shoes are important!

Hiking sandals are now my go-to travel shoe. They offer great support, are often water-friendly (for all that island hopping you’ll be doing) and will take you on just about any terrain. All this, as well as being lightweight and allowing your feet to breathe. There are even brands like Chaco and Teva that are mixing all this high-tech with style, so there’s no excuse to be walking around in flip-flops .

Before You Pack:

Buying plus size clothing is tricky at the best of times, add travel, new activities and unfamiliar climates into the mix and it can feel overwhelming. Take a little time to plan out what you need, what you already have that’ll do the job and decide if there are any pieces you need to pick up.

Here’s my fool-proof checklist:

Double and triple check the climate of the places you’re visiting, this is easier when it’s one or two places but bear in mind that the same country can have multiple climates. For example, when I visited Jordan last Spring, the capital, Amman, was a chilly 6C but just 2 hours away, at the Dead Sea, it was a steamy 30C!

Plan out all the activities you definitely want to do, as well as those you’d like to try out, so you can pack for them. This can be everything from a fancy dinner and sightseeing to a snorkelling trip or hiking! This will help you to realistically plan how many ‘specialist’ outfits you’ll need.

Length of Time

Plan out no more than one week of outfits! One of the BIGGEST mistakes travellers make is overpacking. In reality, you will wear everything a couple of times and if you’re going away for longer than a week or so, you’ll want to do laundry.

Check Out Local Customs

Sometimes you have to cover up your shoulders, knees and hair, or take off your shoes in order to be respectful of local religions and customs. Make sure you know ahead of time what to expect so there are no tricky moments.

A friend and I visited a beautiful old Mosque in Kuala Lumpur this year. I had researched and knew that I’d be required to cover up, my friend who was wearing shorts, was asked to wear a one-size-fits-all cover-up upon arrival but as I was dressed appropriately, I didn’t have to worry about fitting into it!

Plus Sized Travel Clothes Brands

It’s one thing to bite the bullet and promise yourself that on this vacation you’re going to hike to a waterfall, but it’s another thing entirely to make sure you have the right clothing. Here is a collection of my tried and tested plus-size inclusive clothing brands.

For Activewear

Fabletics is my go-to for cute & inclusive activewear, whether that’s for hiking, yoga or travel days (yes, I’m a yoga pants 24/7 kind of girl).

As of January 2020, their size range will go up to a US size 22-24 (4X) making it one of the most inclusive sportswear brands out there.

I’ve mentioned them before, but they’re so good they get a second shout out, Chaco and Teva are two brands you HAVE to check out for supportive vacation footwear. Both brands stock wider widths too.

For Swimwear

With the inclusion of lines by plus size style icons Gabi Fresh & Ashley Graham, as well as sizes ranging from US 4 – 32, SwimsuitsForAll is the place to find that fatkini to help you take your vacation by storm.

For Everything Else

ASOS Curve , a personal favourite of mine, goes up to a US size 26 (5X) and is a one-stop-shop for everything from panties to evening gowns (I’m not kidding). Other store options I can recommend include Boohoo , SheIn & Old Navy.

Plus Sized Travel Clothing: What to Pack

Lightweight, breathable, quick-drying and wrinkle-free materials.

These fabrics are your best friends, especially when shopping for plus size tropical vacation clothes!

Rayon & Polyester get a bad rap but in my experience are cool, durable and extremely suitcase friendly (read: make great plus size, wrinkle-free travel clothing, nobody likes ironing!)

But what about cotton, I hear you ask? While cotton is comfortable and breathable making it one of the best hot-weather materials, it creases like nobody’s business and can be weighed down by the moisture it absorbs, so if you love cotton, opt for a cotton-polyester blend for the best of both worlds.

Multi-Purpose Items

To help you save on space (remember, with larger clothes = fewer options) pack items that do double duty.

Sarongs are amazing multi-purpose space savers, great for everything from beach coverups & beach towels to an extra layer on a cool flight, a headscarf to keep the sun off your scalp and a way of covering your shoulders & knees at religious sights.

Day-to-night clothing is a must. Prioritize pieces that can be dressed up or down easily with a few accessories – a simple dress in the day paired with your newly purchased hiking sandals can turn into a party dress by night by adding a long necklace, some lipstick and your designated pair of ‘night-time’ sandals.

Make the Most of Your Airport Outfit

Deciding on your plus size airport outfit can be tricky, but here are my tips!

Comfort over everything! I usually opt for my leggings and an oversized tunic or sweatshirt. Dressing smartly will not get you a free upgrade, but might make you uncomfortable.

If you’re traveling to more than one destination, don’t wear your heaviest/bulkiest clothing – I know, I know, you think I’m crazy for saying that! But hear me out – that clothing has to fit in your bag at some point, right? I made the terrible mistake of flying from the UK in the winter wearing my jeans and sweatshirt and arriving in Egypt to 25C+ heat. I never wore my jeans again on the 7-month long trip and they became a huge burden because they just didn’t fit in my bag!

Pack for Comfort, Whatever That Means to You

I love dresses. I live in dresses, sleep in dresses, hell, I even hike in dresses. So when I listened to all the people telling me to take trousers on my latest and longest round-the-world-trip, I should’ve known it was a terrible idea. I ended up mailing my trousers home and searching high and low for shops that stocked my size so I could buy more dresses. Moral of the story? You know what clothes make you most comfortable, so pack those.

You’ll be stuck with those clothes for the rest of your trip so this is not the time to experiment!

Above All Else, Pack for Confidence!

Will a Swimdress make you feel 100% more confident on the beach?

Will having your favorite dress make you enjoy your trip even more?

Then girl, rock it.

Your body is perfect just the way it is and there is nothing more important than dressing to make yourself feel as confident as possible. You deserve to love the hell out of yourself and your vacation. Take the time to plan, research your destination and remember, if you’re having a blast, no one, not even you, will care what you’re wearing.

The Best Travel Clothes for Curvy Women

Ok ladies, let’s talk travel wear. The strappy dresses, string bikinis, and pretty convertible tops that seem to be featured on every packing list, round-up, and Instagram feed. Yes, they are adorable. And I’m sure they look amazing on many women. However, as a curvy girl who is often caught between regular and plus sizes, I regularly find that these ‘perfect travel clothes’ really aren’t the best travel clothes for curvy women.

More often or not, when I look at these ‘must have’ lists  I end up mentally knocking off half the items because they won’t look good on my figure. Only to find out that those that I think might actually work on my body come in limited sizes. It’s a pain in the butt. Just because I’m curvy doesn’t mean I don’t want pretty clothes. I deserve to feel good in a swimsuit. I want to look cute in my photos. And I know I’m not the only one feeling left out when it comes to travel fashion, but the fact is that plus size travel clothing is hard to find.

Thankfully there are some brilliant brands that recognize that women of all shapes and sizes like to travel and look good while doing it. So from one curvy traveller to another, here are my recommendations for the best travel clothes for curvy women.

Best Convertible Travel Wear for Curvy Women

Convertible clothing and capsule wardrobes are perfect for travel, especially since airlines are getting so strict with luggage. And while many brands offer these types of designs, most of them target those with slimmer figures who are willing to show more skin. Personally, that’s not my style, which is why I love the chic and elegant designs from Diane Kroe.

Diane Kroe Origami Top

Diane Kroe offers a range of items from shirts to dresses to pants, all of which can be worn multiple ways. My first two Diane Kroe pieces were the  Origami Top (above) and the Carry On Cozy , both of which I love. Both pieces transformed into multiple looks as tops and dresses. They washed and wore well, and were very obviously a quality make. Plus, I loved how they looked and felt on. The Origami top is perfect for dressier events and I love the Carry On Cozy for the plane and for having on hand to cover up my shoulders in more conservative places like temples.

I have since added a few more Diane Kroe pieces to my wardrobe including the butterfly wrap and Mariposa kaftan which are lightweight coverups perfect for the beach or to cover up a little more at more conservative sites. I took my butterfly wrap with me to Egypt and used my Mariposa over my swimsuits in French Polynesia.

Diane Kroe is a Canadian brand based in Toronto. All clothing is created in-house by staff, and custom orders are accepted. Pieces can be ordered online at: https://dianekroe.com and regular sizes run from 2-20 (US sizing) but custom orders are welcome, making it one of the best plus size travel clothing choices. Worldwide shipping is available.  Use code HANNAH10 to save 10% off your purchase!

Best Casual Travel Essentials for Curvy Women

If you have been following me for a while and paid attention to my photos you might have noticed that, for the past few years, I have worn the same black t-shirt on every single trip I take. It’s the encircled Evolve Top and it’s easily my favourite t-shirt. The sleeves are adjustable to give it different looks, it’s a bit dressier than a normal t-shirt, and it washes and wears SO well.

plus women's travel clothes

I have also recently fallen in love with their Dressy Sweatpant pants which are cuter than leggings but as comfortable as PJs and can be dressed up for down. I have also declared them the ultimate airplane pants because they are super comfortable, cute, and, while not thick, provide a bit of warmth. And yes, they have pockets! They also come with me on every trip.

Best Dresses for Curvy Bodies

While I used to be a tomboy as a child, I am now 100% a dress girl. Part of it is because I think they are so pretty, part of it is because it is so easy, and part of it is because I found a brand that has a huge collection of styles and colours that fit my body really well. The brand is  City Chic and I have a closet full of their dresses right now.

City Chic Dress

City Chic has stores in the USA and Australia but does offer shipping abroad. As a Canadian, I can sometimes find their products at The Bay, but the best selection by far is online on the official City Chic website. They have dresses for every occasion and in a variety of styles so whether you want something loose and flowy or tight to hug your curves, you’ll find options here. City Chic is made for mid and plus size women so their sizing goes from size 12 (XXS) t0 24 (XXL).

Another cute place for size inclusive dresses (xs-4x) is Cherry Velvet . This brand is Canadian and create vintage, pin-up style pieces that are super cute and can be fun to travel with as well (although you might need to iron them before wearing!).

Best Jeans for Curvy Women

plus women's travel clothes

I hate buying jeans. I have thick thighs and a big butt and a smaller waist and nothing ever seems to fit properly. However, on suggestion from some friends I finally tried American Eagle curvy jeans and immediately bought three pairs. These are the only jeans I have found (so far) that actually work for my body. They have all kinds of styles but, being a millennial (who also lives in Canada where you want to be able to tuck your pants into winter boots) I’m partial to the skinny jean. The Ne(x)t level ones are super stretchy and comfortable. Recently I’m also loving the wide leg dreamy drop styles which are super soft and actually comfortable. American Eagle offers sizes up to 24 and a variety of inseam lengths.

Best Leggings for Curvy Women

plus women's travel clothes

Like jeans, I struggled to find leggings that fit me well. Again, the whole smaller waist and bigger bottom led to lots of fit problems. Usually, waist bands sliding down which meant every time I hiked/walked/worked out I would have to stop to pull up my pants. I tried all kinds of brands and styles before landing on one very specific pair from lululemon: The Wunder Train tights. They don’t fall down and they aren’t see through and I cannot recommend them enough. Lululemon currently carries up to a size 20 but keep in mind the fit on their leggings is very different than jean size. I wear 18 jeans and 12 in these lululemon leggings, so keep that in mind when figuring out sizing!

Best Travel Swimsuits for Curvy Women

plus women's travel clothes

Swimsuits and wetsuits have been one of my biggest pet peeves as a water love and scuba diver. Especially when, on top of travel, I live on a lake at home in Canada during the summer months. I’ve tried tons of swimsuit brands over the years and have several favourites. In fact I created a whole blog post about my favourite swim-wear brands. You can find it here.

Best Travel Outwear for Plus Size Women

Outerwear can be another pain in the butt to buy, but being Canadian I have to have several different coats for the different seasons. I’ve bought coats from plenty of brands throughout the years, but when it comes to keeping warm or dry, my favourite brand is Columbia.

plus women's travel clothes

I currently have two Columbia jackets; a warm winter one perfect for those -40C days (yes, I said -40C. Welcome to Canada) and a lightweight waterproof rain coat. The raincoat is perfect for travel because it folds up into its own pocket, is lightweight, breathable, and most importantly: it is waterproof.

Columbia products can easily be found in sporting stores as well as online on amazon. The raincoat I’m wearing above can be found here.

Best Anti-Theft Pieces for Curvy Women

As a solo female traveller, I think that Clever Travel Companion is one of the coolest clothing lines out there. Their products; which range from underwear to pants to tank tops to hoodies, are all pickpocket proof. Secret pockets that are perfect for cash, passport, and banking cards keep your important items safe and concealed.

Clever Travel Companion

While the colours and designs may be plain and simple, the designs are flattering. I tried out their travel tank with 2 secret pockets a couple years ago and it’s now a staple in my luggage. Check out my review for it here .

Clever Travel Companion clothing can be ordered online at: clevertravelcompanion.com . They will ship around the world, and sizes run from XS-XXXL.

Great post. I found many of the sites suggested very intriguing. I will definitely be adding to my travel wardrobe. With the checked bag fees and carry-on space crush I need to minimize my travel gear.

These brands are all lightweight and pack easy as well! I love them all and take them with me everywhere.

I’m traveling to Ireland and was excited for your post but most things listed are no longer available. Super bummed.

Not sure what you mean? I just checked them all and the only thing currently unavailable is the Lululemon leggings I recommend. I’ve been keeping an eye on them since Christmas and I’m not sure if they are just out of stock or being discontinued. I have ordered a new style to try and it should be coming next week- will share if I love them. But everything else I’ve listed is available.

So refreshing to read some tips for us curvy girls!

I thought it was about time 😉 I’m not the only one!

I think you did an excellent job by covering the topic of travel outfits for curvy women without compromising their chic style

Yassss thank you!! As a fellow curvy girl I know it can be extra challenging to find clothes that are comfortable and functional enough for travel. Some awesome ideas here I’m def going to try out!

Yes! I am so grateful to have found these brands so happy to share with my fellow curvy travellers 😉

some really great suggestions here Hannah. I split my (only pair) trousers on our trip to Australia. Couldn’t face trying to replace them to patch job and how for the best. Can’t predict all drama when travelling!

Oh god thats my fear when I go to Asia haha

That’s my biggest fear. My sister and I are going to Thailand later this month and we’re both 6′ tall so if our pants or shoes give out we are S.O.L.

haha yeah sometimes its worth it to pack extra 😉

Side note, good for you for putting a swimwear shot up. I took some shots in Bangkok at a swish infinity pool and haven’t yet found the confidence to share them publicly. Bravo curvy sister, bravo.

haha thanks 🙂

How do you find the Cherry Velvet dresses, in terms of wrinkling? I have four or five of them, but hadn’t really thought about taking them travelling, as I thought that they’d just wrinkle up, and I usually stay in hostels that don’t have irons readily available!!

I am starting to love SweetLegs — I just wish that they were a natural fibre, as I usually try to avoid the synthetics in the crotch area, especially in the hot sweaty summer! But I definitely ordered a bunch today with their 20% off sale this weekend:)

Definitely checking out the other suggestions here!

I find if I hang my cherry velvet dresses over a door or in a closet it helps get the wrinkles out. Can also hang it in the bathroom when you shower- the steam will help 🙂

I love Eddie Bauer’s Girl on the Go insulated trench. It stands up to all sorts of weather. I’ve worn it in pouring rain in summer without the lining and stayed dry, and in the snow and wind in winter with the lining and have stayed warm. It’s low profile enough for city travel.

Good to know! I have a couple things from EB but they only carry plus online (with ridiculous shipping) or in the USA.

I found this site yesterday and love it! My husband is very uninterested in traveling outside of North America and I can’t contain my wanderlust anymore. When you travel solo, do you try to keep it down to a large carry on for most trips or do you check your bags every time?

Thanks Dana! It depends on how long and where I’m travelling. For 1-3 weeks I do carry ons. But when I do multi-month trips I tend to check my bags.

I just found your site and really enjoy it. Great pictures!

One of my favorite travel pieces is the Columbia Pardon My Trench. It’s a belted jacket with trench detailing and a hood and zip up pockets. It’s sleek enough to work in a city but sturdy enough for light hiking, trekking. And it fold up very small. Runs up to 3X.

Columbia have awesome coats

Glad I found this post! Planning a 3 week trip to Italy and Greece (includes a 12 day cruise). I’m sure your suggestions and websites will help me. Great to see fellow Canadian suggestions too.

ooh fun! Definitely check out Diane Kroe pieces for that! The convertible aspects will help you pack lighter + her clothes are beautiful.

Thanks for these ideas. One cmpany I like for clothing is Blue Sky. Available online or in person in BC, this company makes bamboo clothing in real people sizes. I especially like their skort which is knee length with pockets. It can be dressed up or down. My travel wardrobe is almost 100% Blue Sky.

I’ll have to check them out. Thanks!

Thank you so much, thanks to you I’ve found cute swimdresses and city chic was awesome for me!

Yay! glad to help

Thank so much for this article. I will definitely be checking out all of these sites!

Happy to help!

[…] My journey towards self-acceptance and body positivity has been one hell of an adventure but it’s incredible how much has changed over the past few years. I enjoy checking myself out in the mirrors that I used to avoid. I buy more form-fitting clothing, I have a drawer filled full of swimsuits, including multiple bikinis, and I feel adorable in sundresses. (PS: You can find my picks for curvy-friendly travel clothing here) […]

I love your sandals. Where are the from

The gold ones? Birkenstocks!

Curvy and plus, fine, but I am also TALL. Almost impossible to find the combo. Most talls only add leg length and do not add to rise.

Have you tried American Eagle curvy jeans? I’ve tried them since I wrote this and they are now my new favourite. They come in a taller length and my friend who is 6 feet LOVES them

[…] For more of my clothing picks, checking out my list of the best travel clothing for curvy women.  […]

Please expand to include those of us above 24/3X. I’m glad the industry is starting to be more inclusive, but apparently they think travel and life stops at size 22/24. It’s even worse if you happen to be short (like me) or tall.

Some brands on this list to go to larger sizes but, agree, the sad fact is a lot of brands don’t. I continue to update this list as I can to be inclusive but I also focus on highlighting brands that I know and use and trust. I don’t just list random brands because they offer certain sizes.

Looking for lightweight dresses. Love some of the ones you wear. But have been bitten with shipping to Canada. When you order to Canada and have delivered by DHL do you get a charge from them to clear customs plus the customs cost? When I looked it up, it looked like a 13% customs fee. Worth shipping to Canada if on sale?

yes the shipping and duty can be brutal. I try to keep anything purchased from abroad under $100 to avoid the duty fees!

Hi, I’ve been reading a lot of information about good travel wear for curvy, larger ladies and one thing I’m having trouble finding is anyone discussing good bras for those skinny strap dresses and tops. I would love someone to give me some insight.

I live in Alberta, Canada so it would helpful to have some information on bras I can purchase in Canadian funds. Thank you.

My go to is Dessee brand (Penningtons carries them). They have a convertible bra that works really well for me. I usually go strapless under my thin-strapped dresses.

Plus Size Travel Clothing

Written by: Phebe Schwartz

One of my favorite brands for plus size travel clothing is Eileen Fisher .  Her clothes are based on what Eileen Fisher calls “The System”:  grab a top, add a bottom, throw on an outer layer, and voila, you have an outfit.

Everything is designed to be layered – perfect for travel!

Eileen Fisher clothes tend to be a bit pricy, but the quality is outstanding, as are the fabrics of organic cotton or linen, modal jersey, cashmere, merino wool, and silk.

Her designs can be found at large department stores such as Nordstroms , Macy’s , Lord & Taylor , and on the Eileen Fisher website as well. (If you shop online, their models may not be plus-size even though the sizing is available.)

Sizing:  Eileen Fisher sizing tends to be a bit generous.  Items can be in petite, misses, or plus.  However, the misses XL usually fits size 16-18, or even 20 if it’s an oversized or boxy shape.  If you’re in a store, try a variety of sizes.  Her plus sizes are quite generously cut.

Helpful hint:   I always check the “sale” section online, and will save favorites while watching to see when prices drop even further.  I do the same at the department store sites.  When an item is 50% off or more, I grab it.

Mandarin-Collar Button-Front Shirt

The long-sleeved shirt

A long-sleeved shirt is indispensable for travel.  This can be worn alone, over a tank or tee, or under a sweater or blazer.  It can also be worn as an additional layer under or over the right dress.  My preference is white, because it looks so crisp with black.

  Linen Cargo slacks

Basic trousers

Eileen Fisher has tailored slacks , harem pants, fitted or slouchy slacks , man-tailored trousers – I like her linen cargo slacks that are slightly cropped, and the lantern slacks which turn in just slightly at the ankle.

Use packing cubes to help you organize and even compress your belongings to maximize your space.

plus women's travel clothes

The linen knit skirt travels beautifully, but so does the straight viscose jersey.  Both work well with just about every top.

plus women's travel clothes

Organic Linen V-Neck Tee

The linen knit tees are light and airy, perfect for hot weather.

plus women's travel clothes

For really hot weather, a tank top will keep you cool, especially in natural fibers.  If you are self-conscious about your upper arms, look for a top with cap sleeves for a bit more coverage.

plus women's travel clothes

Embellished top

I adore the beaded tops, but suspect they’d be too heavy for traveling.  The silk tops, however, are luxurious enough to dress up a pair of jeans, but are light as a feather.

plus women's travel clothes

Chambray shift dress

So many dresses to choose from!  I like Eileen Fisher dresses that can be worn over her slacks, leggings, tights, or under any of the sweaters or jackets.  Look for versatility as well as what is flattering for your shape.  (The viscose jersey can be a bit heavy, so consider this when ordering online.)

plus women's travel clothes

Cashmere Shawl Collar Cardigan

I love her boxy pullovers, but I also adore cashmere cardis that go with everything.

plus women's travel clothes

Hooded Weather-Resistant Jacket

Blazer or jacket

This little cotton knit jacket works with slacks, jeans, skirts, a dress.  The vaguely military styling in absolutely on trend right now, but is so classic that it will still work five years from now.

I’d love to be able to fill my luggage with Eileen Fisher clothes, but my budget isn’t quite up to that.  However, a few of her items will definitely add a more elegant and luxurious look to a wardrobe of basics; and if you buy on sale, you won’t break your budget.

Eileen Fisher can feel a bit staid. Do you have suggestions for brighter, hipper, but still practical and comfortable staples?

I haven’t heard of Eileen Fisher brand before, but I don’t go shopping at stores that often. Will check out the website. Thanks for the recommendation!

Sherry

Hi Phebe Love your tips. I look best in vests, usually size 16 – 20 depending on the cut. Where should I look for good ones for home and to also travel on tours with.

Hi Sherry, thanks for your question! We’ll share your question here so the author of the article can reply 🙂

Michala Martin

Thanks, Alex, for giving us plus sized girls another option for good quality travel clothing. As I search for great capsule pieces I’ll definitely look here.

alex

Thanks Michala!

Josephine

I have an Eileen Fisher black (now faded) snap-front lightweight jacket (with pockets) that went with me on a three week trip to Europe & I wear it at home ALL the time, too. The weight works even in heat like Rome in early Sept with just a cami or tank top underneath. I stuffed it in my day bag & it was crush resistant- no ironing! The weight works well over a long sleeved T-shirt, too. I got it at Goodwill, my absolute favorite place to look first for travel clothing. I often find new items with the price tags still on. If I don’t find what I need at Goodwill, Red, White & Blue or other thrift shop), THEN I’ll go to REI or look at the travel-specific brands.

alex

Great brands Josephine! Thanks for sharing your great tips! Happy travels!

Rhonda

I just found some 2X-sized merino wool base and middle layers on the Cabela’s website. They partner with Icebreaker to create larger items (and cheaper too!) than on Icebreaker’s own website. I ordered a long-sleeved base layer and may order a few more if the fit is right. I would have never thought about Cabela’s for travel wear!!

That’s a great tip! I’ll start looking at Cabela’s clothing from now on. Thanks Rhonda 🙂

Sandra

I guess it depends on what you intend to do when travelling, but I DID pack a skirt on my 2nd long trip overseas, only to never wear it.I’m a pants girl, through and through,so the 3rd long trip had only pants. The rest of the list I agree with.(My trips have been 7-12 weeks and in many countries throughout each trip.)

It’s good that you know what works for you. I’m not a skirt girl either. I’ve tried to like them but I just don’t and prefer pants or shorts instead. Always go with what works for you 🙂

EILEEN FISHER

Thanks for the love, Alex! Great travel picks.

Thank you! Your travel-friendly clothes are fab!

Add slip-on shoes, cozy pashminas, and compression leggings to your packing list.

best travel outfit ideas for women on oprah daily

Our editors handpick the products that we feature. We may earn commission from the links on this page.

When it comes to travel, we know you need to find the perfect balance between comfort and style. After all, it’s great to look put together while hopping on a flight, but not at the cost of your comfort—especially on long-haul trips. Rest assured, we've curated a list of wardrobe essentials to achieve flawless travel and airport outfits, whether you are exploring a new destination for business or pleasure.

When it comes to the best travel outfits for women, accessories play a critical role in keeping you comfy and organized. All you have to do is remember a comfortable pair of shoes , compression socks to keep things moving, an eye mask that's an upgrade from the one the airline provides, and a chic shawl that doubles as a blanket. And of course, no travel outfit would be complete without a fashionable (and functional!) carry-on bag on your arm or atop your luggage . This bag should house all of your essentials and still level up your airport outfit. Keep reading for some of the best travel and airport outfit ideas your next trip.

Missky Long-Sleeved Oversize Pant Set

Long-Sleeved Oversize Pant Set

You might look like you're already on vacation if you show up to the airport in this neutral pants and button-down set. Available in two bright and two neutral colors, and sizes small to 2XL.

Spanx AirEssentials Wide-Leg Pants

AirEssentials Wide-Leg Pants

Sometimes nothing less than sweats will do, and here is where Spanx really excels. Oprah picked these for her 2022 Favorite Things , saying, “You might know Spanx for its shapewear, but it also does fantastic cozy clothes. When I tell you this set feels light as air, I’m not kidding. It’s my new leisure suit. The perfectly loose-and-lightweight fabric is like buttah!”

Vuori Elevation Trouser in Midnight Heather

Elevation Trouser in Midnight Heather

Vuori is celebrated for its super-cozy pieces. The best thing about these pants? They look put together while the stretch-knit fabric is as comfy as your favorite Vuori loungers. The high-rise waist and loose fit of the leg give you an effortlessly stylish silhouette.

Girlfriend Collective Compressive Pocket Legging

Compressive Pocket Legging

Leggings are a perfect choice for traveling wear. And these have Oprah's seal of approval, as they were picked for Oprah's 2022 Favorite Things list. Eco-friendly and size-inclusive (the range goes through 6XL), these compression leggings are available in a plethora of hues. Plus, they feature double-side seaming and pockets.

J. Crew Cashmere-Wool Travel Wrap

Cashmere-Wool Travel Wrap

Dr. Scholl's Time Off Platform Sneakers

Time Off Platform Sneakers

Celebrated for their consciously comfortable footwear, these sneakers from Dr. Scholl's are tricked out with tons of features for all-day comfort. Inside, anatomical cushioning and arch support keep you covered while a lightweight, anti-slip platform sole protects on the outside. This minimalist sneaker looks just as good with a matching suit as it does a low-key sweat set.

Chico's Travelers No Tummy Pants

Travelers No Tummy Pants

Chico's Travelers collection is made from wrinkle-resistant fabrics in comfortable silhouettes. Thanks to a pull-on waist and front darts, these No Tummy Pants are flattering and always look put together. 32º DEGREES Lightweight Recycled Poly-Fill Shirt Jacket

Lightweight Recycled Poly-Fill Shirt Jacket

Sometimes a full on coat is not needed for travel, but you can never be quite sure of the weather. That's why a a little packable shacket—part shirt, part jacket—comes in. In black, olive green, or dark blue, the jacket will be your go-to for travel. Keep in mind, it runs slightly big in order to allow for comfortable layering of hoodies or sweaters underneath. There's a reason why Oprah tapped it on her Favorite Things list .

Spanx Women's AirEssentials 1/2 Zip Sweater

Dr. Motion Compression Socks with Enhanced Cushioning (3 Pack)

Compression Socks with Enhanced Cushioning (3 Pack)

Compression socks are always a good ideal for traveling. We recommend these styles from Dr. Motion that offer graduated compression of 8 to 15 mmHg while providing arch support. Unlike other socks that can feel scratchy or clammy, these are soft, moisture-wicking, and subtly cushioned.

32 Best Women's Loungewear Sets for Long Travel Days

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Some may argue that traveling by plane is an occasion to dress up, but for most of us at Traveler, comfort is the main priority when planning a transit day ensemble: You want something loose enough that you won't need to readjust (or worse, unbutton) a few hours into a flight or road trip, but put-together enough to feel that you've made a switch out of pajamas and into a true outfit. Luckily, there is no shortage of loungewear sets these days.

Read on for 32 of the best loungewear sets to add to your travel wardrobe , many of which are sitting in our editors' dresser drawers. From upscale sweatsuits to cozy cashmere knits, they'll keep you comfy whether you're sitting on a plane, train, or in the passenger seat, and will get a re-wear on lazy vacation days when the only item on your to-do list is lounging around the Airbnb .

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date. Additional reporting by Meaghan Kenny.

plus women's travel clothes

Buck Mason is at the forefront of elevated essentials. The Vintage Interloop set features an oversized crew that has a relaxed fit all around and thinly ribbed stiching on the cuffs to give more structure to the slouchy sleeves. The French terry sweatpants are slimming and so comfortable. Each set looks slightly different than the other, thanks to Buck Mason's Venice Wash technique that creates its cool, vintage look.

plus women's travel clothes

Kim Kardashian's shapewear and loungewear brand Skims never misses when it comes to cozy sets. The Cotton Fleece collection is a more sporty take on classic loungewear. The soft fleece shorts have an interior drawstring at the waist for a more customizable fit.

plus women's travel clothes

If you prefer something a little more roomy, the Oversized Tee and Harem Pant set from This is J is for you. It’s perfect for long-haul flights and road trips where comfort is at the top of your list, but you don’t want to step out in your pajamas. The soft, moisture-wicking fabric will keep you dry and comfortable whether you’re snuggled up on a train or plane.

plus women's travel clothes

This set is made for cold weather. The thick fabric will keep you warm and toasty whether you’re hanging inside with friends or out sightseeing. The top has a dropped shoulder sleeve that looks more oversized while the pants feature a wide-leg with a drawstring waist.. The set comes in 10 solid colors that are easy to pair with a slip-on sneaker or Ugg boots .

plus women's travel clothes

The soft ribbed knit of the Muse hoodie and sweatpant offers a lot of dimension to the duo. The set is lightweight enough that it can be worn over workout clothes without any bulkiness. The high-waisted joggers pair well with the cropped hoodie and offer a more chic silhouette.

plus women's travel clothes

You’ll be comfortable from head to toe with this ultra-soft pullover and pant set. The pants have a classic ‘70s wide-leg silhouette accompanied by an elastic waistband, while the pullover has a polo-inspired collar and a slightly cropped hem. An all-white set never goes out of style and will look great with a white sneaker .

plus women's travel clothes

Made from a blend of merino wool and cashmere, the luxuriously soft fabric of the Cashmino Tunic hoodie and joggers is hard to beat. We love this set for its sophisticated yet cozy look.

plus women's travel clothes

The name tells you everything you need to know. The Coziest Cashmere Blend hoodie and jogger are ultra-soft. The fabric is warm yet breathable and the fact that it’s a blend gives you peace of mind that it won’t be ruined in the washing machine.

plus women's travel clothes

Traveler editors swear by Lunya's washable silk pajamas and cashmere Travel Set . The brand’s Silksweats complete its holy trinity of comfort. With a sherpa interior and thermoregulating abilities, you'll be comfortable without overheating in this set. Bonus: Both pieces are reversible so you can have two looks for one.

plus women's travel clothes

We're always raving about Girlfriend Collective, a size-inclusive, sustainably- and ethically-made brand. While much of the ReSet collection is sold out, this cropped sweater and pant set are a great replacement, made from half recycled, half organic cotton. They're available in your classic neutral colors, as well as this rich wine hue.

plus women's travel clothes

Late last summer, True & Co. dropped its first loungewear line, expanding upon its uber-comfortable bras and undergarments. Rather than stick with the same basic cuts, they launched with a cropped wide leg pant and oversized long sleeve, both in a soft, jersey sheet-like fabric. Order the separates in blush, charcoal heather, mushroom (shown above), or crushed berry.

plus women's travel clothes

There's something to be said for a zip-up sweatshirt, even if they've largely been replaced by pullovers of late. For one, if your temperature flips from chilly to warm, you can regulate without bothering your seatmate while trying to take off your hoodie. We're a fan of the sweatpants, too: the deep pockets, cuffed ankles, and cashmere fabric are all plusses.

plus women's travel clothes

A new addition to OV's ultra-soft, lightweight, and durable CloudKnit line-up : this boxy T-shirt with a slightly cropped fit. It comes in charcoal, navy, mocha, fog white, and jasmine blue, all of which will match your go-to black leggings or joggers .

plus women's travel clothes

Awarded one of Oprah's Favorite Things in 2020, I was eager to put on Cozy Earth's ultra-soft joggers, and am happy to report they lived up to the hype. Made of a mix of premium viscose from bamboo, acrylic, and spandex, they're smooth and cool to the touch, and have a loose but not baggy fit. I've worn them a ton on WFH days, and would happily fly in them. Snag a matching pullover if you like the matching set look.

San Francisco–based Quince launched a maternity collection, which includes a nursing-friendly long sleeve and lounge joggers with an adjustable drawstring waistband. All of the collection's pieces are made with renewable materials like Tencel lyocell, a biodegradable fiber made from wood pulp; mulberry silk, a hypoallergenic and thermoregulating fabric; the company's SuperSoft fabric, a blend of recycled polyester and tencel; and sustainably- and humanely-sourced Mongolian cashmere.

Outdoor Voices’ All Day hoodie and sweatpants set really is made to wear from dusk to dawn. It aims to be the softest pair of sweats you will ever wear, and stacks up, with a CloudKnit fabric that feels as cozy as your most worn-in pair of pajamas. The sweatpants are high-rise and more fitted toward the bottom to give the most flattering look possible, too. The pieces can be bought individually and come in six different colors, from neutral charcoal to a rich Kalamata purple.

While former Traveler editor Jessica Puckett's favorite cashmere set has since sold out, Cuyana's Pima outfit is another great option for plane travel and lounging, particularly in warmer environments, as the material is soft, smooth, and breathable.

Former Traveler editor Corina Quinn turned us on to Vuori's DreamKnit Collection hoodie and jogger set. “The DreamKnit feels like a cloud—it's so soft and cozy, yet lightweight, so you don't get too hot or too cool in them,” she says. “On top of that, because there are a few different models of jogger pants and tops, my friends and I have all found a model that's flattering for us.” For a pair of sweats that make you feel like you’re wearing a real outfit without actually doing so, Vuori’s unbelievably soft, stretchy sets are an easy pick.

Friend + Folk is a size- and gender-inclusive brand that prioritizes a limited carbon footprint, and puts it into practice by way of free carbon neutral shipping, recyclable and plastic-free packaging, limited batch-production, and more. The Joon joggers are a favorite—the fit is roomy and comfortable yet still tailored, and the zippered pockets are ideal for stashing AirPods, lip balm, and other odds and ends without worrying they'll fall out as you dash through the airport. Pair them with the Perry pullover and you've got a new airport uniform.

Lululemon may be best known for its leggings and workout wear, but don't skip over the brand's loungewear. This set is made out of a smooth Softstreme material that is stretchy and feels smooth against your skin. It's a great loungewear set to wear if you run hot.

We love this Madewell number, made of a fleece-like Superbrushed terry fabric. Wide legs and a loose fit make it just the kind of thing we want to wear on long travel days, and the patch pockets are much appreciated. Since it does have tank top-style straps, bring a cardigan or other added layer for the plane.

Allbirds has been expanding its offerings from shoes and accessories into athletic and loungewear, using the same environmentally conscious (and carbon neutral) production process. This crewneck and sweats set is best for loungewear purists who want something simple, and comes in white or black, as well as limited-edition colors like hazy pine, terracotta, and true navy.

Some loungewear is better suited for inside wear, like this cozy ribbed shorts set. Wear the pullover, with its bell sleeves and slit in the back, over leggings for long-haul flights. The stretchy shorts have a fairly short inseam, so they'll likely be more comfortable as a sleeping short or loungewear piece to change into when you arrive at your hotel or rental house.

This two-piece set might be the closest thing to sleepwear on this list, and yet is still cute enough to feel confident while wearing through the airport. It comes in a dozen colors, from basic heather gray to bold indigo blue, and pairs slouchy, relaxed fit pants with a scoop-neck button-up henley.

If this brand sounds familiar, you may have worn one of its face masks—initially a scrubs outfitter, Jaanuu has since ventured into loungewear. The result is a super stretchy, super soft hoodie and jogger set you'll want to wear on every flight (and maybe to a workout class, too).

Sure, all sweatpants are designed to be comfortable, but the cotton, modal, and spandex fabric Knix uses takes things up a notch. The smooth, cooling, and slightly stretchy fabric feels fantastic against skin and looks a bit more put-together than typical sweatpant material.

Most loungewear tends to follow the same cut, so we appreciate Monos, a luggage brand , shaking things up when delving into clothing. This set is as soft as any sweatpants out there, with a mid-length wide-leg pant and a short sleeve V-neck tee that's just slightly cropped.

Anything labeled Signaturesoft nails both the rest day and flying-comfortably mood we're going for. The top and bottom have a streamlined shape and the sweatpants are tapered at the ankle. Both pieces are made of a comfortable rayon, acrylic, and spandex mix, so you’ll feel cozy while still looking put together. The sweatshirt and sweatpants can be purchased individually and come in nearly a dozen colors should you want to mix and match, and the sweatshirt passes the video-conferencing-chic test, in that it looks more like a standard sweater than workout wear.

Not a hoodie person? You might like this cowl-neck top, which comes with cropped pants, both made of a super soft jersey and spandex fabric. Shop the set in gray, sky blue, strawberry, or buttercream, and wear it on your next overnight flight to feel like you're in pajamas.

If you didn't get on board with sweat shorts during the stay-at-home early pandemic days, it's not too late: Ideal for warmer climates or people who run hot, Reona's riff of its best-selling  cotton joggers pairs well with the loose-fit crop T-shirt , a travel wardrobe staple made of bamboo fabric.

You may never want to put on pajamas again after wearing Softwear's Lounge Set. The fabric is buttery soft inside and out. Both the pullover and joggers are tailored and fitted with a clean silhouette—the top could pass for a normal sweater—while still being ultra soft. Plus, it’s long-lasting: The sustainable fabric is pilling-resistant and made to keep its shape after every wear.

Made for pregnant or nursing moms, this Everly Grey set is designed to fit a baby bump and make nursing easier with side openings on the top. Made of stretchy fabric with cuffed ankles and wrists and pockets on the hips, it's a loose, ever-so-slightly tailored look you'll wear again and again. Order it in one of four neutral colors: black, charcoal, oyster pink, or denim blue.

What Are the Best Jeans for Petite Women?

plus women's travel clothes

In this article

  • Straight leg

Flare and bootcut

Petite jeans are truly difficult to shop for. Just when you’ve found a pair with the right rise, shade, and waist-to-hip ratio, you realize you need to trim the length a half-foot. Or perhaps the fit is perfect, but the style swamps you. “Fashion keeps moving, and so do our preferences,” says Lwany Calderon , who runs a fashion newsletter for petite women. “These days, it’s all about low-rise jeans with a looser fit, and sometimes even a bit of fabric bunching at the ankle. While this might not seem like the best for us petites, I say we roll with the changes.” While your best bet is to shop by inseam length, that’s not possible with all retailers. “Shopping for petite and plus-size jeans can still be quite a task, but I hope we will keep seeing more brands allowing shoppers to select an inseam size,” says Natalie Craig , a petite plus-size content creator and blogger.

To help you navigate the best petite offerings in 2023, we asked stylists, fashion editors, a denim expert, plus 12 more stylish women — artists, content creators, models and bloggers, all five-foot-three or shorter — about the denim that fits them just right. You’ll notice that while there are plenty of cropped and short options here, there are also some that aren’t petite-specific, but the women we spoke to say they still fit petite frames. To make your search even easier, we sorted them according to fit and style for easy reference — straight-leg, skinny, flare and bootcut, wide-leg, distressed, and plus-size.

Straight-leg

Agolde Riley High Rise Straight Crop Jeans

If you’re shopping for petite jeans online, a straight leg is worth considering. For one, it’s more often possible to filter by inseam sizes with this cut. Four of the petite people we spoke to like this pair from TikTok-favored brand Agolde. Amy Serrano , who’s a content creator, “adores this pair” and says the brand “makes those jeans that just ooze ‘cool girl’!” She adds that the high-waisted, straight-leg style “definitely levels up my fits even if I’m just pairing them with a T-shirt.” While they’re meant to be cropped, Serrano, who’s five feet, says that they “hit right at my ankle and are the perfect length for a full-length jean.” Jessica Turk, another petite content creator, is equally obsessed, calling them her “dream pair of straight jeans ,” and Jenny Wang, five-foot-two founder of the shop Petite Studio NYC loves that the fit isn’t a traditional slim jeans look, “but has some room at the thigh area, makes the jeans more modern.” She also loves that they “come in a ton of colors and washes, which offers a lot of variety.”

Charlotte Bickley , who’s five-foot-three and Daily Front Row Editor-at-Large and fashion content creator is also a fan of Agolde, but opted for the Cooper style , as she’s planning to lean into the cargo pant trend this fall.

Levi's Wedgie High Waist Straight Leg Jeans

We’ve featured the Levi’s Wedgie many times (numerous Strategist editors own them). Calderon says it’s a style she just keeps going back to, adding: “Since I’m five-two, I went for the 28-inch inseam to get that modern ankle-covering look I’m into.” Turk is also a fan, particularly because they’re made from 99 percent cotton. “They are super-soft, but are non-stretch, so they really hold their shape,” she says. Their 26-inch inseam is the “perfect length” for her, and she reckons they’re a great option for anyone nervous to step out of their comfort zone.

Levi’s Ribcage Straight Leg Ankle Jeans

For a pair of Levi’s with an even higher waist, Serrano recommends the Ribcage Straight Ankle jeans. “This pair gives me legs for days because of the ultrahigh waist. It hugs what it needs to hug and the rest of the leg is a nice relaxed straight fit,” she says. Serrano opts for darker washes because they “truly feel versatile to dress up or down.”

Abercrombie ’90s Ultra-High-Rise Straight Jeans

These Abercrombie ultra-high-rise jeans came recommended by two of the people we spoke to. “They’re perfect for my curvy body and are available in a short length and even extra-short ,” says content creator Lizbeth Hernandez. The style is also one of Serrano’s favorites, and she also highlights the convenient extra-short inseam option. She likes that the fit “hugs every part of my butt perfectly” and notes that they’re so comfortable, she wore them while doing “a round of high kicks with the Radio City Rockettes.”

Andrea Ventura , petite model coach and founder of Standing Tall podcast prefers the lower waisted relaxed fit , explaining that “they’re long enough that you get the cool ’90s-girl vibes, but not too long that they will get dirty touching the floor.” And, where once these styles were limited in stock, you can now browse dozens of colourways from classic denim washes to black, grey, white and brown — even oaty beige, light pink, and blue pinstripes.

Imogene + Willie Sophie Weston

Rain Delisle — owner of Indigo Proof, a denim restoration shop in Portland — rates Imogene and Willie jeans as a solid choice for petite women, because the waistbands are on the tighter side. She says this works well for super-high-rise cuts , “because it really holds the jeans up.” I+W are famous, according to Delisle, for “that nip in the waist, with a straight or wider leg.”

Delisle is particularly fond of the Sophie Weston style, in a true vintage wash. “They also have perfected large back pockets that look amazing on,” she adds, enthusing that you can even fit a wallet or phone in them. She also owns (and recommends) the Elizabeths , with a caveat that she refers to them as her ‘standing jeans’, as that “ they can get a little on the tight side when sitting and eating.”

H&M Wide High Jeans

Wide-leg jeans are a style some shorter people avoid. But some of the women we spoke to felt the right wide-leg cut makes them look taller. If you’re keen to try this out for yourself, Turk recommends going for a super-high-waisted wide-leg jean, because “the waistline elongates your legs and makes you look taller,” she explains. “The bottom of the pants adds some width to my petite frame and creates an expanding illusion.” Turk’s favorite pair from H&M have long been sold out (with little hope of restock) but as long as you opt for something tight and high-waisted on the top, that seamlessly transitions to a wider leg on the bottom — like these high-rise wide-leg jeans, also from H&M — you should see the same effect.

Zara High-Waisted Full-Length Z1975 Straight-Leg Jeans

Another person firmly in camp wide-leg is Kristian Spraggins , a curly-hair content creator who’s five-foot-three. She likes Zara for jeans, and styles a pair like these with heels for a more put-together look. She notes that since “they make you look taller than you are, you don’t really have to wear heels all the time — you could wear sneakers and still look really tall.”

If you’re worried about the last pair being too long, petite and curvy style blogger Alyssa Marie recommends going for a cropped pair of wide-leg jeans, for example, Zara’s high-waisted, cropped Z1975s .

Re/Done Loose Long Jeans

Taking things a step further, artist, writer and five-foot-two denim devotee Jo Rosenthal mostly looks for a baggy, straight leg cut with a low waist. She says she’s particularly in love with RE/DONE and Quality Mending ’s offerings, adding “I’m pretty sure almost all my jeans are from one of those two places.” Though once she’d opt for petite cuts, these days, she prefers to shop for regular-fit jeans and improvise. “I just cut them with scissors or wear them and let them drag on the floor because — who cares?” she says. RE/DONE’s Loose Long jeans are perfect for that anarchic attitude, particularly because they’re designed to puddle at the hem anyway.

Levi's 501 90s Original Women's Jeans

Ventura is also a big fan of this Levi’s throwback style. “They are the perfect “baggy” length — so not too long they touch the floor but long enough that you get that cool ’90s vibe.” She also comments that they sit about an inch below her belly button, making them “incredibly comfortable to wear.” She chooses them for everything from model castings to hanging out with her family, styling with “a monochrome crop top or bodysuit, casual sneakers, and gold jewelry.”

BDG Kylie Cropped Kick-Flare Jean

Strategist senior editor Ailbhe Malone is five-feet-two and has solely worn BDG denim since 2009. The brand is surprisingly great for petite women, she says — she once bonded with Tegan and Sara (both also five-two) when they all noticed they were wearing the same BDG jeans. Malone owns many different styles from BDG, but especially likes the kick-flare jeans. “They hit my ankle just right,” she says. She also likes the raw hem, which means that if the crop is a little long for you, it’s not noticeable if you cut the hem a bit more yourself.

Veronica Beard Beverly Skinny-Flare Jean

When styling petite clients, Ann Caruso — fashion stylist, Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar alum, and content creator — suggests steering clear of big pockets, bagginess, or other details if the goal is to create length. Instead, she advises that pairing a slight flare with a high waist can “elongate the figure making you seem longer and taller than you really are.” She recently bought these Veronica Beard high-rise flares for a petite client, and reports that the fit worked so well that “she looked like she was all legs!” She advises to pair them with a comfy heel “and you’re good to go.”

SLVRLAKE Grace No-Waistband

Bickley trusts L’Agence, AGOLDE and SLVRLAKE above all other brands when it comes to denim shopping. “I know when I order them the length and fit is great, and I don’t even need to go to a tailor,” she explains. Her all-time favorite are these ever-so-slightly flared, cropped jeans, which give the illusion of elongated legs through an absentee waistband. She “adores” them and appreciates that she can wear them in the daytime with ballet flats and a white tee, or dress them up with pumps and a blazer.

L'Agence Sneeki Jean

Next on Bickley’s list are these L’Agence jeans, which come with a stylish raw hem in a subtle straight leg-meets-bootcut shape. She loves that these would hold up in a ’70s-style outfit, adding “all you’ll need is a good pair of brown mid-heel boots and a good baby-doll top with cute hoops.” L’Agence offers complimentary tailoring when you order from their site via Hemster, meaning you can get the exact fit you’re looking for, at no extra cost.

Universal Standard Seine High-Rise Skinny Jeans Petite

Few people we spoke to currently favor skinny jeans — perhaps a symptom of the style’s waning appeal. But Natalie Craig , a petite-plus influencer, recommends Universal Standard and comments that the brand has “incredible” options for petite and plus-size people. “Its plus-size and petite jeans are still some of the most comfortable and curve-loving jeans I have ever worn,” she adds. For skinny jeans, she likes the Seine High Rise in a distressed blue wash. You can pick from an impressive size range, with petite, regular or tall inseams in size 00 to 40. Their stretchiness is designed with resilience in mind and they’ve got actual, deep pockets (yes, even in the front) that are big enough to fit your phone in. Just make sure to size down for this style to get a close-fitting skinny effect that’ll last you wash after wash.

Judi Rosen The Judi 718 Jean

According to Delisle, if your priority is jeans that will stand the test of time, don’t opt for cuts that rely heavily on stretchy fabrics, even for skinny jeans. “The more the cut relies on stretch potential, the faster the jeans will break down and stretch out completely,” she explains. So, she says to go for minimum 98 percent cotton if you can, and remember that seam details and patterning go a long way for a great fit that doesn’t stretch out within the first day of wear.

She loves York-based brand Judi Rosen for this reason, who she says is making “some of the best women’s jeans today.” She loves many of the label’s cuts, but is particularly into the skinny-straight GBU “with seams that hug the body beautifully.” She loves the “quality stretch denim that’ll give you the ‘Judi Butt,’” the quirky seam details, and the back pocket shape. “100 percent my next denim purchase for fall,” she confirms.

Everlane The Way-High Skinny Jean

Lastly, Delisle suggests these, by Everlane for “great, basic no-frills jeans — and possibly the only jean you won’t need to get hemmed!” Be prepared, these are true skinny jeans in the 2003 sense of the word (the type that cling to the ankle even if you’re petite). They come in both 26 ¾ and 28 ¾ inseams, and are available in a curvy fit. “ The Cheeky is probably their most popular style, and that is great on petites,” she adds.

Djerf Avenue Relaxed Jeans Washed Blue

Hernandez loves these “super soft and comfy” relaxed fit jeans, created by five-foot-three founder of Djerf Avenue, Matilda Djerf. A washed-out blue shade with vintage-effect creases and dark yellow seams, Hernandez considers them to be the perfect comfy baggy jean “that actually fits my petite frame great.” She also likes that they’re “sustainably and consciously made”, plus they’re 100 percent cotton. The style has been reworked since it first launched to include a longer crotch.

Chimala Selvedge Denim Used Ankle Cut

As a denim tailor, Deslile usually prefers a more wear-and-tear approach to denim, but appreciates these petite, 100 percent cotton women’s boyfriend-cut jeans by Chimala, with cropped lengths — perfect for petites — and “a very vintage slouchy feel.” The tapered cut comes with a higher level of distressing and fade on the thighs, if that’s your vibe.

Talbots Straight Leg Jeans

“It can be so hard to find denim that is both plus size and petite,” explains Tinsaye Berhanu , a five-foot-two petite-plus fashion influencer. But she says can often rely on Talbots, “which has a few great options including a classic straight cut that I really like.” They’re available with four different inseam lengths, and because of the 28.5-inch inseam on the petite fit, she says they’re the perfect go-to pair of jeans for fall.

Lane Bryant Boyfriend Fit Patchwork Jean

Craig often feels she’s missing out on certain trends as someone shopping for petite-plus options. “However, Lane Bryant always has the latest styles and classic staples that fit me perfectly,” she enthuses “from overalls to wide-leg jeans and every other style in between.” She loves these statement paneled jeans, which come in regular, petite, short, and long inseams, from size 12 to 38/40, and styles them with a simple crop top with jeans and a pair of sneakers.

Good American Good Petite 90s Jeans

Another go-to for Craig, thanks to its inclusive sizing, is Good American. “I can always count on finding a variety of styles, and feel comfortable recommending them to women who ask me where I shop,” she explains. These dropped-crotch, distressed ’90s jeans are available in sizes 00-28 Plus and are specifically designed for those who are five-foot-four and under. Don’t worry about that 30 inch inseam — it’s intentional, to create a small amount of bagginess at the angle. But if they’re feeling a little too long, they’re narrow enough at the hem to cuff once without too much fabric overwhelm.

People / Kristin Kempa

Dresses are some of our favorite pieces in our wardrobe. While they’re an obvious go-to for more formal occasions like weddings and date nights, they’re also an effortless option for daily wear. Much like a romper, you don’t have to think about choosing a corresponding top and bottom when slipping into a dress.

Shopping for plus size dresses means finding styles that not only offer an inclusive size range but also have lots of styling potential, allowing you to customize the fit when possible (we love a wrap dress for this reason) and easily layer pieces together for more coverage if that’s your preference.

With this in mind, we set out to find the best plus size dresses, considering options that fit well, are comfortable for all-day wear, and have loads of versatility.

How to Pick the Best Plus Size Dresses

Styling potential.

When shopping for plus size dresses, Kam Throckmorton , a stylist with over 20 years of experience dressing plus size women, says to look for pieces you can layer and style in interesting ways. “If you fall in love with a sleeveless dress but feel more comfortable with your arms covered, layer it over a shirt or even another dress that has a complimentary sleeve,” she explains. “It shouldn’t be about covering your body but rather about ways you can create different looks with the limited offerings in the plus-size world.”

Dressy vs. Casual

Since there are more limited options when it comes to plus size dresses, Throckmorton also says not to get too caught up in labeling dresses as fancy or casual. Instead, consider styles that have a lot of versatility and allow you to dress them up or down. For example, the Eloquii Mixed Stripe Ribbed Dress from our best spring and summer dress category feels a bit more casual with a pair of slide sandals and a denim jacket layered on top. However, you can easily add a pair of heels — whether it be a stiletto pump or a wedge sandal — and style it with a clutch purse to make it feel a little more elevated for a night out.

Consider Alterations

It’s important to remember that dresses can be altered to meet your ideal fit and styling preferences. With this in mind, Throckmorton says don’t settle for something you don’t love. “As a plus-size woman myself and having spent a lot of time with plus-size women in dressing rooms, it’s easy to compromise and buy something you don’t love just because it fits,” she notes.

Alterations are a great way to customize a piece that has potential but needs some customization to make it work for you. For example, if you love the structure of a blazer but get hot easily, Throckmorton says you can have the sleeves removed and make it a vest.

When considering alterations, it’s also worth considering the designs you like in straight sizes, and looking for the same qualities — like style or construction — in plus size. “With things like tailoring and styling, you can create the same look as brands that don’t offer plus sizes,” Throckmorton explains.

Draping Effect

When trying on dresses, Throckmorton also recommends looking at the fabric draping, which can influence the overall fit and feel of a garment. “If something is meant to be flowy, make sure the fabric allows it to flow; If it’s meant to hug your curves, make sure the construction of the garment and the fabric give you the look you desire,” she explains.

What is the most flattering dress for plus size?

When considering dresses that are flattering on any body, Throckmorton says it’s all about symmetry. “Humans are attracted to symmetry, and the best way to achieve that with clothes is to highlight the smallest part of your body and then make sure your top and bottom appear the same size,” she explains, noting that the goal is to have a more balanced silhouette.

In her 20-year career as a stylist, Throckmorton has worked with thousands of women and says that the most common body shape is an inverted triangle, which means the shoulders are wider than the hips. “Most women are shocked to learn the best way to balance that shape is to draw attention or create visual weight to their hips,” she notes.

While there are several flattering dress styles for plus-size bodies, Throckmorton says the wrap dress is the most universally flattering. She says to look for one — such as the Baccal Maxi Wrap Dress or the Ellementree Short Linen Wrap Dress — that has some flexibility, allowing you to tie it either at the waist or a little higher, with some movement at the bottom.

What is considered plus size for a woman?

Unfortunately, there isn’t an industry standard for plus sizes, so this one is a bit tricky. For many brands, anything size 16 and up is considered plus size. However, some brands begin their plus size range at 12. In addition to numbered sizing, some brands carry alpha sizes with plus sizes ranging from XL through 6XL and greater.

What dress trends are in style for spring 2024?

There are several popular dress styles for spring 2024. “I am seeing a lot of dresses that take up space and have movement,” says Throckmorton. She notes that these styles tend to have fabric that swishes when you walk and silhouettes that make you want to twirl. The Old Navy Short-Sleeve Mini Shirt Dress puts a more minimalistic spin on this trend and is an excellent option for daytime wear. We also love the Ulla Popken Sleeveless Button Front Linen A-Line Dress , which has plenty of that fabric swish while also balancing out the figure with a cinched waistline.

Practicality is another popular trend for this season, and many are opting for an all-black monochrome look as a result. We love the Good American Belted Body Dress with a pair of black heels for the office. The Old Navy Short-Sleeve Mini Shirt Dress in black is another more spring and summer-friendly way to wear this trend.

More illustrative floral prints — especially bolder styles — that feel hand-drawn are also popular this season. To get the look, we love the Ulla Popken Sleeveless Button Front Linen A-Line Dress in the navy blue botanical print, or the Lane Bryant Long-Sleeve Shirt Dress .

The footwear experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute evaluate every type of shoe you can think of — from sandals to hiking shoes to slip-on sneakers — taking into account the comfort, fit and support of each pair. We've tested hundreds of shoes and analyzed thousands of data points to find the top shoe brands that support your arches and cushion your heels to keep you comfortable while walking or standing all day. We also seek feedback from consumer testers and expert podiatrists. Our roundup of the most comfortable shoes includes picks from brands that have performed well in our Lab tests and those that earned rave reviews from real users.

Head to the end of this guide to learn more about how our team tests shoes, what to consider when shopping for the right comfortable shoes for you and why you can trust our recommendations.

This popular style from Allbirds has a huge following for a reason. Whether commuting to the office or traveling abroad, the ultra-comfy footbed will keep your day from having to be cut short. And they're favorites of our Textiles Lab — we tested them out and worked with our panel of readers for additional feedback, collecting over 1,300 data points about Allbirds shoes alone. A whopping 91% of our panelists gave the shoes a perfect rating for comfort. The Tree Runners performed well in our washability tests, and they're even designed to be worn without socks. Plus, they're made with Tencel , a breathable material derived from chemically processed wood pulp that is a more sustainable option than other common materials like polyester. They're available in a variety of fun colors, including some limited edition ones like indigo and umber, and they're lightweight and breathable.

Looking for something a little more budget-friendly that will still keep your feet comfortable after long hours out and about? These sneakers by New Balance are one of the most affordable styles we evaluated, but don't let the low price fool you. They're both high-performing and high-quality. Our testers raved that these sneakers were comfy to wear when walking and working out . These were also one of the lightest sneakers we evaluated , so they're easy to pack in a gym bag and take on the go. Plus, their slim style is easy to squish down and fit inside a carry-on bag or tote . We also like that they're available in both regular and wide sizes, although we did find they tend to run a little small.

This model from ASICS is an updated version of the top-performing shoe in our walking sneakers test, and it can even function as a great pair of running shoes . They're a favorite of our testers, popular for being comfortable and supportive no matter the activity. Podiatrists who evaluated these sneakers said they provide excellent stability and control, making them ideal for people with flat feet. All our testers reported that they liked these sneakers more than their current ones and would continue to wear them. The added cushioning and moisture-managing liner help keep your foot comfortable during a variety of activities, and we like that they're available in half sizes as well to help get you the right fit, but we have found that they have less flexibility for those with wider feet.

Running late? These classic slip-ons make it easy to run out of the house in no time. Rothy's has a cult following for its comfy sneakers that require minimal breaking in for ultimate comfort . This pair of slip-on sneakers has a contoured insole and a knit upper that are entirely machine washable (the brand recommends taking out the midsole before washing). We've laundered Rothy's flats in the Lab and found that the material really washes well. These are the ultimate travel sneakers, according to one user who takes them on every trip and loves how lightweight they are for packing in a carry-on bag . Plus, they can be paired with casual exercise clothes or dressier outfits to match whatever you bring in your suitcase. They come in sizes 5 to 13, including half sizes, and 15 colors and patterns, so there's bound to be a style you love.

Swap your current flats for these comfy and stylish ones from Bi rdies. Not only are they our textile experts' favorite comfortable flats right now, but they're so cute you'll be sure to get dozens of compliments when you pair them with your favorite outfit. We like that these shoes conform to your foot thanks to their comfortable seven-layer footbed, and both our Lab pros and testers were particularly wowed by the support and softness this style offered . Plus, they're available in a bunch of different looks like classic suedes and leather and seasonal raffia. We found that the pointed toe was chic without squishing your toes and like that it is available in half sizes for easier fit. Our testers did find that sizing runs a bit large so you may need to go down a half size to prevent slipping out of your flats, but thanks to Birdies' return policy, you'll easily be able to swap out your shoes if they're the wrong size.

READ OUR FULL REVIEW: These Stylish Birdies Flats are Just as Comfy as Slippers

Not all sneakers need to be designed for running or working out, and these fashionable ones from Cole Haan are cute enough to wear out to dinner, around town or to the office. Cole Haan shoes are known for being designed with comfort in mind, so you don't have to sacrifice your outfit for comfy toes. These stylish low-top sneakers have a memory foam insole and a high-traction outsole . The heel is reinforced with extra padding for additional comfort, and the trendy platform sole is lightweight. There are several stylish colors and prints to choose from. One online reviewer said, "These are by far the cutest and most comfortable fashion sneakers I own." Keep in mind that some reviewers found them to be a bit narrow, so they might not be a good fit for those with wider feet.

Everybody needs a classic bootie in their shoe arsenal, and this extremely comfortable pair will have you accepting compliments from all of your friends without having to put up with blisters or toe pain. With a pointed toe, a 2-inch block heel and a stylish ribbed upper , the Glove Boot ReKnit is the ultimate bootie. Perfect to wear to the office or on a night out, these shoes are comfy and breathable, thanks to the stretch knit material. They're even made from recycled water bottles (nine per pair!), so they're also a more sustainable pick. Commerce editor, Jacqueline Saguin hasn't worn this pair but loves her shoes from Everlane, sharing that they get "comfier with time," and online reviewers of these boots agree, adding that they last for years and mold perfectly to their feet with wear. Some online reviewers have found that the outsoles can be slippery.

Have no fear keeping your feet cozy and comfy tromping through the snow during the winter months with these furry boots by Columbia. Great for snowball fights, a winter walk or just trekking to work, they do a remarkable job of keeping your feet toasty while still providing a comfortable sole. Featured as our best overall pick in our best winter boots round-up , these mid-calf snow boots keep you dry even when walking through deep snow. The boot shaft is 9 inches tall for protection from winter weather, and the soles are designed to provide traction in slippery conditions. The brand claims its Techlite technology keeps the midsole light while still providing ample cushioning and support. You can only choose between a few styles, but there are wide options and half sizes available.

This may look like a typical strappy sandal, but they're secretly orthotic shoes ! This pick is our textile experts' favorite walking sandal , and we particularly like how comfortable they keep your feet thanks to the microfiber-wrapped footbed that's ultra soft. They're available in both regular and wide sizing and come in a few different styles perfect for a look that can transition from a daytime walk on the beach to a nighttime dinner on the boardwalk. The heel strap keeps your foot secure and comfortable and prevents heel slippage, and with four different points of adjustability, you'll be able to personalize the fit to your foot size and shape. We did however find these shoes to be on the heavier side at 8 ounces per shoe.

Take that hike without worry when you strap on a pair of these hiking shoes from Salomon. Lightweight, flexible and offering impressive traction, these shoes are a particular favorite among both our pros and consumer testers. They continue to earn some of highest scores for comfort of all of the hiking shoes we've tested and consistently excel on multiple types of terrain including rocky spots, muddy creek areas and flat dirt trails. Our testers found these shoes to feel extremely stable, durable and protective even during more difficult treks. This style has a larger toe box than its previous versions, so you don't have to worry about squishing your toes during long walks. The substantial toe cap and synthetic leather upper keep your feet protected during all sorts of hikes. While testing, we did find that they can run a little hot.

Naturalizer Womens Tiff Sandal

Womens Tiff Sandal

Take a spin on the dance floor in these comfortable sandal heels that will keep you party-ready at all times. Naturalizer designs comfortable heels like this one with a molded, cushioned footbed. This pair has a height of just under 3 inches, and the block-shaped heel provides extra support and stability. The strappy shoe features an open toe, which is often more comfortable than an enclosed style that can cram your toes together. Available in a ton of neutral shades and some bolder hues, this heel is perfect for all occasions — from wedding season to a day in the office. We appreciate the adjustable buckle at the ankle and the availability of wide sizes, but some online reviewers said they wished the footbed had a bit more cushioning.

Vionic Women's Bella Orthotic Sandal

Women's Bella Orthotic Sandal

Slip these incredibly convenient sandals on for a quick walk or trip to the beach and spend the rest of the day relishing the comfort they provide. Most flip-flops are completely flat with no support or cushion, but this pick from Vionic has a molded footbed for comfy arch support. The lightweight EVA midsole will conform to your specific foot shape. It just takes some time, so the brand recommends wearing the shoes for a few days before judging the fit. (Don't worry. There's a 30-day return window.) There are many colors to choose from, including classics like black and tan and fashion colors like rose gold, army green and seafoam. One user said she loves her Vionic sandals because they look good with everything and feel good on her feet, describing them as "all-purpose" and the "most comfortable sandals [she's] worn." While these sandals are specifically designed for those with flat feet or plantar fasciitis, they aren't meant for long walks and shouldn't be worn as your go-to walking shoes .

Clarks Women's Annadel Eirwyn Wedge Sandal

Women's Annadel Eirwyn Wedge Sandal

These wedges from Clarks are constructed with supple leather and a soft, cushioned midsole. The cork platform design gives you more lift without extra strain. Because these sandals run a bit narrower according to online reviewers, some recommend going up a half size. We also appreciate that they're available in wide sizes so you can opt for that if you're worried about them running too narrow for your foot. An adjustable strap with a loop closure and velcro will help the shoes stay in place all day long. They're also available in two different colors, a light and dark neutral, so you can wear them with almost everything.

Atoms Model 000

Model 000

For those with extremely finicky foot sizes, this might be your knight in shining armor in shoe form. If you struggle to find a shoe that fits you perfectly, you'll hopefully have some luck with Atoms Model 000 sneaker. It's a vailable in a whopping 63 quarter sizes from 5 to 16.5. If, for example, you normally don't quite fit into a size 7 but find a 7.5 to be too large, you can opt for a 7.25 in the Model 000 shoe instead. The shoes are designed with a foam midsole that one GH Analyst described as super bouncy and comfortable. She shared they're easy to slip on and off without untying. Just note there may be some discoloration (yellowing) in the wash.

Hoka Clifton 8

Clifton 8

Hoka sneakers are a popular pick among those with plantar fasciitis because of the brand's signature footbed. With a structured foot frame , this sneaker keeps your whole foot supported — from your toes to your arches — preventing strain. The rubber outer sole has a rocker design, encouraging you to move from heel to toe and making walking a bit easier with each step. The knit fabric upper is comfy and soft and we like that some of the colors are available in wide sizes as well. One user who switched to Hoka running shoes shared that she's "never felt better" after a run and loves how "structured" they feel. We did however find that these shoes are a bit heavier than other picks.

Dansko Women's Professional Clogs

Women's Professional Clogs

Those who need a bit of a roomier shoe may have better luck with a clog style like this one from Dansko. With over 9,000 five-star Amazon reviews, these shoes are especially popular among nurses, chefs and those in any profession where you have to be on your feet all day long. Although a bit pricey and on the heavy side, these clogs are designed to last. They're made with a 100% leather upper, and the material is easy to clean and wipe down at the end of the workday. You can choose between a narrow, standard and wide footbed, and i t's available in dozens of colors and patterns , so it's a breeze to find a pair you like.

Arch NYC Moscow Mule

Moscow Mule

These mules from Arch NYC are by far the trendiest shoes on our list. Featuring a cushioned memory foam footbed with a soft lining , they impressed our Textiles pros who found them comfortable after all-night wear — while also looking super chic. Available in fun shades of pink, orange and green , the faux fur outer fabric is totally unique. The 3.5-inch heel is a chunky wooden block heel, which provides added support and stability, perfect for a night out. Keep in mind that thanks to their adorable faux fur, they're more difficult to clean than some other options on this list.

Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed

Arizona Soft Footbed

Popular for its comfortable cork and latex footbed, this pair of Birkenstock slides is contoured and molds specifically to your foot shape for excellent arch support. This Soft Footbed version of the classic Arizona slide is designed with an additional layer of foam to provide extra cushioning with each step. One user shared that they're the only shoes she wears while standing for 12-hour days at work because they keep her pain-free through the end of the day. It's a great pick for both men and women and is available in regular/wide and medium/narrow options, along with dozens of other colors . We appreciate that they have adjustable straps to help create the perfect fit and a molded cork and latex footbed for comfort. Just don't take them into the water since this style isn't waterproof!

L.L.Bean Women's Wicked Good Moccasins

Women's Wicked Good Moccasins

Keep your feet comfy, cozy and supported while in the house with this shearling-lined slipper. This pair of moccasins from L.L.Bean is a customer favorite — the brand claims that a pair is sold every seven seconds in December. Many online reviewers share that they've been wearing their pair for years and are impressed that the slippers are still performing well with minimal noticeable wear. The slippers are designed with quality materials including a sheepskin suede outer, shearling liner and durable rubber soles. Underneath the shearling liner is a memory foam insole that cushions the foot for a comfortable feel. Medium and standard sizes are available, along with sizes for the whole family to match. Keep in mind that they're spot-clean only.

Best Clothing Subscription Box For Women Overall

Stylish picks, with petite, plus and maternity size options.

  • What’s notable: Stitch Fix is one the most well-known, stylish and flexible clothing subscription boxes out there, with adjustable deliveries and try-on periods.
  • What could be better : You can preview but not edit items before they ship.

Stitch Fix scored highest in our review for its ease of use and stylishly curated clothing—the service works with more than 1,000 brands including Madewell, Vince and Good American. After taking the style quiz and setting your budget, you’re sent a box (or “Fix”) with five items, which you’ll have three days to try on (or request more time in the app). Prices are reasonable: The $20 styling fee is applied toward any items you buy, and you get 25% off your entire order if you keep all five pieces in your box. You can also shop à la carte for items without subscribing.

What else to know: Sizes range from XS to 3X, with petite, plus and maternity options available. Deliveries can be scheduled weekly, monthly or on-demand (no recurring subscription). Shipping and returns are free. Cancel two weeks in advance of shipment or call customer service.

Best Value Clothing Subscription Box For Women

Budget-friendly service with plenty of options.

  • What’s notable: Well-priced items cost between $50 to $100, and you can preview and edit items, plus set a budget for your stylist.
  • What could be better: Boxes only come in pre-set themes but you can personalize the selections.

If you like the fashion variety and outfit-planning ease of a subscription but want to keep costs down, Wantable is a well-priced option. You start by setting a budget for your stylist and picking a pre-set box theme (such as “style edit” or “active edit.”) You can preview and edit your selections, and also request specific items—Wantable works with brands like Free People, Thread & Supply, Rhone and more. Boxes contain seven items and you’ll have five days to try on everything. Keep only what you want (the $20 styling fee is credited toward anything you buy) and you’ll get 20% off your total order for keeping at least five items.

What else to know: Sizes range from S to XXL. Deliveries can be monthly or on-demand (no recurring subscription). Free shipping and returns. Cancel anytime before your next box or contact customer service for already-in-progress shipments.

Best Designer Clothing Subscription Box For Women

Hundreds of luxury brands.

Rent the Runway

Rent The Runway

  • What’s notable: You’ll get access to high-end, luxury clothing with monthly plans that range from $94 to $235, which you can pause or cancel easily. Dry cleaning is complimentary.
  • What could be better: You’ll spend less than buying designer clothing outright but the service is still costly.

Rent the Runway was the first, and is still the best, designer rental clothing service. The monthly subscription gives you access to five items at a time, from brands such as Phillip Lim, Gucci, Veronica Beard, A.L.C. and other luxury labels. The service is particularly great for evening wear and wedding guest dresses, as well as chic work outfits. You can hold onto items as long as you want, or swap and exchange them at set intervals: The basic plan ($94) offers one monthly delivery while the unlimited plan ($235) grants you up to four deliveries per month. Also nice: You can purchase items you want to keep at a discount, which varies by the item.

What else to know: Items typically arrive in one to three business days, and sizes range from 00 to 22. Dry cleaning and minor repairs (along with accidental spills) are covered at no additional cost. Shipping and returns are free; cancellations must be made about three to five days before your next rental begin date.

Best Casual Clothing Subscription Box For Women

Three flexible plans and thousands of chic styles.

  • What’s notable: Versatile selection of everyday fashion brands known for high-quality basics—think long sleeve tees, trousers and cashmere sweaters—that you can rent or purchase with flexible monthly plans.
  • What could be better: Only four items per box included in the basic plan.

Similar to Rent the Runway, Armoire is a rental subscription service but its price point is slightly more affordable. The brand mix includes Boden, Paige, Diane Von Furstenberg and Rag & Bone. You can keep styles as long as you want or swap them out, and the idea is to build a capsule collection you can easily rotate every few weeks. Three different plans range from $89 for four items with one swap per month to $249 for for six items with unlimited swaps. The initial style quiz identifies your fashion preferences and sizing, and then the stylists—and the algorithm—start to learn your preferences.

What else to know: Sizes extend from 0 to 24; shipping and returns are free. Dry cleaning, minor repairs from wear and tear are complimentary. Cancel or pause your subscription anytime, so long as it’s at least 72 hours before your next renewal date.

Best Plus-Size Clothing Subscription Box For Women

Size-inclusive service with polished brands, dia & co.

  • What’s notable: This size-inclusive retailer’s subscription box includes stylish picks that range from casual denim to cocktail attire and more.
  • What could be better: Only one monthly plan, no swaps allowed.

Dia & Co carries an extensive selection of size-inclusive brands, including 11 Honoré, Estelle and Ever-Pretty. The Dia Styling Box includes five hand-picked items, including clothing and accessories, based on your styling quiz preferences. You’ll have five days to decide if you want to keep or send back items (if you buy one or more items from your box the $20 styling fee is waived.) The clothing is well-made and on-trend for parties and events, with shoppers especially keen on the assortment of tops, sweaters, dresses, pants, jacket and workout clothes.

What else to know: Sizes range from oX to 5X; free shipping and returns. You can request a complimentary extension on your try-on period, and cancel your box anytime before it’s shipped.

Best Petite Clothing Subscription Box For Women

Women-owned brand that caters to petite proportions, short story.

  • What’s notable: No more tailoring needed—this service is all about smart, stylish, well-made pieces (from denim to work skirts to floral dresses) for those 5'4" or under, at sizes that range from 00P to 20P.
  • What could be better: Only one monthly plan with no swaps.

Short Story is entirely devoted to clothing tailored to petite frames (FYI: “petite” is about height, not size). After taking a short quiz, you’re matched with a stylist who handpicks five to six items for you to try on at home. You have five days to decide what to keep—items typically cost between $35 to $150—and you can mail back anything you don’t want using the pre-paid return label. The $25 styling fee is credited toward any current box purchases, and while there are fewer brands in the mix (not all offer petite sizing), Short Story does an excellent job of curating chic, eye-catching outfits from Amour Vert, Good American, Liverpool and more brands.

What else to know: Boxes can be scheduled to ship every month, two months, three months, or longer. Shipping and returns are free; cancel or skip a delivery before your next order (typically one week in advance).

A guide to the very best shopping in Moscow

Sep 17, 2019 • 5 min read

plus women's travel clothes

While shopping in GUM department store be sure to check out its famous glass roof © Popova Valeriya / Shutterstock

Shopping in Moscow can be quite a daunting experience – you can walk for miles without finding anything but mass-market brands and overpriced boutiques. But, if you do it right, it can also be quite fun. Here are our top tips on how to get the most out of your shopping trip in Moscow.

An interior view of a wide open mall, with a domed glass roof above.

Shopping malls

There are many shopping malls all around Moscow, but there three that double as bona fide tourist attractions: GUM, TsUM and Detsky Mir, all within walking distance from each other. GUM is one of the oldest department stores in the country. It’s famous for the glass roof designed by one of Russia’s most celebrated architects, Vladimir Shukhov.  Today it serves as a high-class shopping mall. There are plenty of luxury shops, a supermarket that sells lots of signature Russian goods and several places to eat. Head to the more expensive  Bosco Cafe with a Kremlin view or, for a budget option, try the Soviet-style cafeteria Stolovaya No 57 . GUM also occasionally hosts contemporary art exhibitions in one of its three main aisles.

The Red Square and beyond: a guide to Moscow’s neighbourhoods

TsUM  is another shopping mall from the pre-revolutionary times. It’s the most luxurious store in the city, famous for its paper bags that many Muscovites carry around or post pictures of on Instagram to let everyone know they shop there. Full of haute couture boutiques, TsUM also has a rooftop restaurant Buro , frequented by Russian celebrities. Tsentralny Detsky Mir  children's store is perfect if you are looking for a gift for a kid or want to check out its awesome viewing platform with good views over central Moscow. At just R50 per ticket it’s a steal.

Food stalls and markets

There are two food markets that are worth checking out in Moscow.  Danilovsky Market  became the trailblazer of Moscow’s foodie revolution when it got an uplift in 2017. As well as many trendy food stalls, the market also hosts lectures, film viewing and even theatre productions, and it recently opened an antiques section. It’s an architectural landmark, a masterpiece of late Soviet modernism that looks like a UFO. Food at  Usachevsky Market  tends to be a bit more pricey and upmarket. Both markets also sell plenty of fresh produce, local cheeses and cured meats.

An outdoor stall selling Russian dolls painted in bright reds and blues, some with recognisable figures on them, such as Donald Trump and Marilyn Monroe

Antiques and flea markets

Shopping can also be a way to get away from the major landmarks and explore some sights off the beaten path. Moscow’s #1 flea market is  Izmailovsky , located in and around the pseudo-historical complex 'Izmailovsky Kremlin' with its colourful walls and domes. Open daily, it’s best to come here on the weekend to catch better deals. Admittedly tacky, Kremlin has a handful of weird museums like the Vodka History Museum or Baba Yaga Museum (Baba Yaga is a Russian fairy tale character). Part of the market had been gentrified into creative cluster Vernissage , with hipster coffee shops, various workshops and Svalka , an enormous two-floor secondhand shop with everything from used books to vintage clothing.

For high-class antiques, rare books and icons head to Antikvarnaya Lavka (Antique Store) just off Bolshaya Nikitskaya street (5 Kalashny Pereulok). Here you can snag a real masterpiece – a painting or a sculpture – but the prices are quite steep.

If you are looking for a more authentic place with less hustle, one option is the antiques market on the premises of vodka distillery Crystal (4 ul Samokatnaya), which you can reach by taking tram 20 to Samokatnaya ul from the exit of metro Chkalovskaya. The market is located in the basement of one of the red-brick factory buildings. There are plenty of antiques, books and various Soviet-time memorabilia, such as Stalin and Lenin busts. While at Crystal, be sure to check out great works of street art – they are all around the factory premises.

For die-hard antique collectors there’s also a place right outside of Moscow – Novopodrezkovo market (also know as Levsha market). Take a suburban train from Leningradsky station to Novopodrezkovo (approximately half an hour), cross the tracks to the other side and there you’ll find it – a treasure trove of used books, vinyl records, clothing, paintings and antique furniture.

Where to shop for Russian designs

Gosha Rubchinskiy might be the only Russian clothing designer of world renown, especially after his collaboration with Kanye West, but there are many more up-and-coming fashion stars worth checking out. One of the places to do it is KM20 , the place Moscow fashionistas, with streetwear brands from all over the world and a lot of very rare items. There's also one of the best vegetarian cafes in Moscow on second floor.

GUM shopping mall has a two-storey store devoted to Russian designers –  Sektsiya (Section). Section sells products made by 50 Russian brands, from accessories to Heart of Moscow souvenir pins. Plus there’s a bar overlooking the Red Square.

If you are not into high fashion, but still interested in getting a cool outfit with Cyrillic script, check out the creative cluster centred around two abandoned factories: Flakon and Khlebozavod . One of the biggest stores is Zaporozhets Heritage  at Flakon , which sells clothing and accessories styled after various Soviet pop culture icons. The northern part, Khlebozavod, hosts several shops like Yunost  and Khlebny  that take a more punk-rock approach to streetwear. After shopping, have a pint at a great local craft beer bar Svoboda  or a coffee at Floo .

Sputnik 1985 is a Russian clothing brand specialising in hoodies and hats with quotes in Cyrillic and retro prints. The store is located in a courtyard on Pokrovka street (19 Ulitsa Pokrovka).
