The Ultimate Guide to Game Jams for Beginners

game jam tours

Your first game jam is both exciting and a bit scary all at the same time. There are sometimes so many rules to follow, it seems like everyone else has it together, but you feel like you’re hanging on by the edge of your seat. The truth though is that game jams are supposed to be fun! If you want to get into game development, I think it is a great place to get started. Below is a guide for new game jammers. I also included some tips on how you can make it a successful experience your first time.

If you are here to see if game jams might be something you would be interested in, I have written an article about what game jams are and why you might want to participate . They really are fun and a great way to learn if you are new to game development.

1. Find a Game Jam that Suites Your Needs / Wants

There are a lot of game jams out there. Itch provides an ongoing calendar of game jams that happen. Quite honestly, on almost any given weekend you can find one that is happening around the world.

If you want to plan out your time for participating, there are two that I highly recommend. That is the Global Game Jam and Ludum Dare .

Global Game Jam is held in late January each year. It is one of the largest in-person game jam events held around the world. This year with COVID, things are going virtual. I hope that by 2022, things will be back to in-person.

For Global Game Jam, my school hosted roughly 40 participants, primarily former students. Many of the locations you will find listed will be universities or businesses. You should be able to find an environment that fits your needs or wants. Some are more relaxed environments and others are a bit more structured. In our case, we were somewhere in the middle.

Ludum Dare, on the other hand, is considerably different. It is typically virtual. It does allow for groups to work with one another, but often those are individually organized. Because of the way it is structured, it is probably the most popular game jam in existence, and maybe the oldest.

Ludum Dare is held twice per year. Once in the Spring and once in the Fall. It is a 72 Hour event, held from Friday evening until Monday evening. It is fairly common tradition for people use their platform to provide other people with updates and get feedback. They do have a good system for interacting with other jammers. Prior to the game jam starting, during the off season, they spend some time working with jammers to collaborate on the theme.

I really do believe that to get the true experience you will want to be available the entire time. In my case, I clear my schedule. I don’t have any plans to go anywhere. I don’t plan family activities or anything outside of the jam. In fact, I go to the extent of working with my wife to make sure that she is aware that the game jam IS my plan.

A fairly important step, but easily overlooked. For Global Game Jam (GGJ) we plan for food and drinks for the participants. If you plan to participate in an in-person event, it would be helpful for the host to know how many to plan for. In addition to planning, GGJ does have an age requirement.

Also, the online game jams should be signed up for as well. The theme and announcements are generally sent via email. It is a good way to stay up to date with what is happening. In Ludum Dare’s case, you will want to sign up so that you can post your progress.

3. Preparation for a Game Jam

Plan your meals.

Some game jams may provide food, such as Global Game Jams. The virtual ones, obviously, will not. I would recommend that you plan out what you might want to eat in advance. In my case, it was fairly simple meals that I preferred.

A few good options might be things like sandwiches, hot dogs, etc. If you want to treat yourself, you might do something in a slow cooker. Those are all great options, lend itself to little time away from the computer, and hopefully things that you actually like to eat!

Install Software That Is Needed

You would be surprised at how often this is an issue for a lot of jammers. Get your software installed before the official start time. I generally look a few days ahead of time to ensure that the game engine, any asset creation software, and programming IDE’s are all working properly.

Brush Up on Your Skills

Being a teacher, I may go 6 months without using Substance Painter at times. The best thing I can do before a game jam is just to go through the pipeline. Not only is it a good way to ensure the software is working like you want it to and get rid of any hurdles, but it just lets you remember the process. It makes you feel a bit more comfortable going into it. Be careful though, don’t burn yourself out beforehand!

Plan for Planning

Seems a bit redundant, but I like to try and stay organized during the game jam. I use post-it notes to do a lot of this, even as a solo. Make sure you have those items around, including pens, pencils, etc. A binder can also potentially work, but I like the flexibility of being able to move post-it’s around on a wall or on my desk.

If you want to use a digital version, Trello is a great resource. It’s also the number one resource for working with people remotely. You will need an account all setup beforehand if this is the route you go.

Tip: Find an Area of Interest

I would recommend that you have something in your back pocket that you may want to dive into during the jam. As an example, last Ludum Dare my area of interest was learning more about the NavMesh system and AI in Unity. This helped formulate some ideas that was based on the theme as well. If you know this in advance, you can start diving into these areas with tutorials before the jam starts to have a general idea of how to use it.

4. Be Ready to Go at the Start of the Game Jam

Every game jam I have been a part of, there is an excitement about getting the theme. This is meant to be the official beginning of you coming up with ideas and building something. Try to make sure you are at your computer ready to go when the theme is announced. You will be sad you did not take advantage of the full time in the end if not.

5. Ideation

I wrote an entire article on ideation for game jams . I believe ideation is difficult for most teams. I would highly recommend checking it out just to have some process in place for this. A lot of teams get stuck here.

Tip: Work backward on ideation. Starting with the end in mind will give you realistic goals. In contrast, if you start with a story, it’s often a good opportunity to not realize just how big the project you have envisioned truly is.

I would recommend trying to keep your ideation to about one hour. Have I ever actually done that successfully? No, but I try. I think shooting for an hour is ideal, but my goal for the first night is generally to be able to get started on my prototype. I probably am not done with it, but I am at least started.

I did work one game jam in which it was a weekend jam and we had nothing fully chosen by the end of the night. The next morning was chaos. People were showing up at different times and no official decisions were made well into the weekend. Needless to say, this was probably my worst experience in game jams that I have ever had. At the very least, people should be able to get up in the morning at a time that works for them and be able to contribute by building something. DO NOT GO TO BED PRIOR TO THIS POINT.

Once you have your idea, I would suggest that all team members, or you if you are working solo, create an “I would be happy if it was… and nothing else” statement. This means that you have your idea, but what is the bare minimum that it can be that you would be happy with? This would often be related directly to your statement about what you want to learn.

As an example, in my last game jam my area of interest was to do something with AI and the NavMesh system in Unity. Therefore, if my game related to chickens walking around was nothing more than chickens randomly walking in a caged area, I would have been happy. This allowed me to focus on these areas first. Everything I did the first 24 hours related to meeting that goal. Anything extra was just added benefit.

6. Create a Backlog

If you are unfamiliar with the Agile Scrum system, I would recommend just checking out a few videos on it. The idea is fairly simple though. The process begins with adding items to your “backlog”. The backlog is essentially post it notes that list out everything you might potentially want to put in the game.

Coming Up With Items for Your Backlog

Some of your common list items may be things like “Player Model” and “Player Movement”. Note that “Player” is probably a bit too broad. The goal here would be to refine it into fairly small pieces, and often split up in a way that would make sense for your team. Example, a programmer wouldn’t know where to start with a “Player Model”, but a modeler wouldn’t really want to work on “Player Movement”. It allows you to split up the work much easier.

What Should Go Into Your Game Jam Backlog?

The backlog is not meant to be things you are committed to doing. Instead, it is all of the possibilities. Think of it as a brainstorming session in some ways. My advice in working with a team is to put any and all ideas into the backlog.

If you have someone on your team who has some crazy ideas, throw them up there anyway. My experience has been that every now and then even a person with crazy ideas will hit a gold mine every now and then. It also keeps an environment in which people feel comfortable giving suggestions. Keep in mind though that you should have your idea chosen at this point. Your backlog is the individual pieces that will make up your game. Still, sometimes you can get some crazy thoughts in this part as well.

How Should You Organize Your Game Jam Backlog?

Organizing is a bit of a different story as well. I would start with about 20-30 post-it notes for a team of about 5 people. You can always add to this list as you move along or others identify additional parts that haven’t been thought of.

You should prioritize your backlog based on your “I would be happy if it was… and nothing else” statement. If my statement is something like, “I would be happy if it was an environment with chickens that feel life-like roaming around I would be happy.” The key areas in that statement are that I need a chicken model, I need to rig the model, I need some way to make the chickens move from point to point randomly. I have to have some animations associated with them.

These are all backlog items and those listed first would be ones that I absolutely have to have to make my “I would be happy” statement a reality.

7. Move Backlog Items into a To Do List

Your To Do List should be made up of what you can get done in hour increments. Since we are working a very short schedule, you should not be taking items that will take you a full day. If your backlog item will take that long, you should refine it down into small pieces.

In my case, I would not have one backlog item titled “Chicken”. The chicken has many different parts to it. I need to model, rig, texture, animate, and program the chicken. If that’s the case, I would recommend using your time as your discussing what you can get done in an hour to refine your backlog items into smaller pieces as you move along.

With prioritization as an important factor, allow team members to decide what they want to contribute. A programmer may want to give a hand to the modeler or vice versa. Allow them to do this! There are also, in my own mind, tasks that seem more enjoyable than others. Please allow people to take on some fun items, even if they may not be the best person for the job. It’s not about completing the best product, but about the journey along the way.

Tip: Leave time for research. There are going to be people that have to look up some tutorials and documentation. It’s fine. Make sure that you account for that time as well.

8. Execute Your To Do List

Finally, we are actually building something! At this point you should feel like you have a good grasp of what exactly it is you are trying to create.

I would recommend that as you get going, make sure that you understand the rules for your game jam. As an example, there are much more stringent rules in Ludum Dare than there is in Global Game Jam. You don’t want to go off downloading assets from the Unity asset store not realizing that the game jam you are part of requires you to build everything within the 72 hours from scratch.

Secondly, avoid panic. You have an hour timeframe to build something, but what happens if it takes two hours instead? Nothing. This is quite common. More times than not you won’t exactly hit that hour mark. The goal of those hour sessions are to bring the team back together regularly.

Lastly, be proud of what you accomplish. There are times where you have to make some drastic decisions. As a modeler, there are times where I have to simply say “that’s good enough”. I remember wanting to add more detail to my chicken. The truth of the matter is that I already spent a bit more time on it than I should have. I eventually had to set it aside and say it was good enough for me. I needed to move on to something else. Encourage teammates running behind to do the same.

Tip: Make sure you enjoy the process, not the result. You won’t be building the next AAA game in the course of a weekend. Your game is going to feel basic and minimal. Enjoy the process, not what you end up with. This should be the thought with each item on your to do list.

9. At the end of each hour, revisit your to do list

This is one step that I think people miss often but it is so crucial! Have your team come back each hour, maybe two hours depending on progress, to discuss what was completed. Where are you having trouble?

These meetings should be short, typically stand up meetings. All team members should participate, even though it can be frustrating to stop work at times. Use this time to continuously refine your backlog. You might take a few minutes to look at the next few items on the agenda. If someone has completed all of their tasks, they need to assign another hours worth of work. If they are running behind, decide how to help them, if any is needed.

This is also a great time to get feedback. I know that people often like to show off their work. Honestly though, the best time is not in the middle of someone else trying to get stuff done. Instead, wait until the hour is over and show the few items you got completed. Teammates can give feedback at that point. I know this helps me out a lot. My preference is not to be distracted a lot while trying to work.

Continuously be evaluating your work with “I would be happy if it was… and nothing else” statement. Are we doing work that ultimately doesn’t meet that goal? If so, you may want to revise what people are working on when appropriate to do so.

If you put this into practice, the reality is that almost each time, as you move along, everything takes longer than you think it will. Keep refining the backlog and to do list. If you are really struggling, you may need to scope back on your “I would be happy if it was… and nothing else” statement. There have been numerous times where I have had to take a step back and realize that my goals were a bit too much for what I could handle in a weekend.

Tip: In addition to working with your team, this can be one of the more enjoyable parts of working within a team. Grab a snack or a drink and enjoy yourself for a few minutes. Remember, it’s all about the journey, not the result.

10. Upon completion of “I would be happy if it was… and nothing else.” Start Polishing

Depending on how you structured your statement, you may find that you hit this pretty early on. In fact, one game jammer says that he aims to hit this early, maybe within 4 hours. At that point, he uses the remaining 44 hours in a two-day jam to polish his game.

My advice would be very similar. As soon as you hit the low bar of what the game could be and you would be happy with it, begin to make what you have looked better. At times you may need to make some significant decisions as to what that is.

If you are late reaching this goal, I would probably consider doing nothing but polishing what you have. If you are still early, I think this is where you can make the call to add other mechanics or a bit more depth. If you decide you want to add a bit more, consider rewriting another “I would be happy if it was… and nothing else” statement to keep you on track.

Tip: If you have a team you may be able to broaden. My experience as a solo jammer is almost always to polish in place of adding. Polish will generally make or break others perception of your game.

How do you actually polish what you have?

I want to list a few of the common areas that you might consider polishing. There are obviously much more than this, but the process is fairly similar.

How can you improve what you have:

  • Areas to consider polishing:
  • Start and End Screens
  • UI Elements for Gameplay (Health meters, points, etc.)
  • Particle Effects

11. Leave 1-Hour to Submit

At the end of your game jam, I would recommend leaving at least one hour for your submission. Generally what ends up happening, even if you plan to do this, is that someone on the team is scrambling to finish something. That’s fine, but the goal is to hit “completion” with one hour remaining.

What this will allow you to do is build your game from your game engine. Generally if you are submitting it somewhere it has to be in a specific format that is compatible. In our case, we often have to build multiple times as we find that there are some issues. Give yourself some breathing room.

Make sure you give yourself time to upload the game to a platform such as itch.io. This is a common one for Ludum Dare. You may even consider doing this before the game jam if you have never done it before. In my first experience, I realized that how I had built my UI totally broke the game. I was forced to go back and make some revisions. The good news is that I had time. The bad news is that I would have built it entirely differently knowing that I had a small window size to work in.

Lastly, make sure you submit information about your game. You want others to be able to look at it. Put someone on the task of writing details about your game, including controls if it’s not built into the UI explaining it (it should be, by the way).

12. Post-Game Jam

Usually everyone is extremely tired at this point. It’s been a long 48 or 72 hours! At the same time, this is the part that I enjoy the most. You get an opportunity to  see what others have built. If you are in Global Game Jam, some places have people showcase their game. It’s a pretty cool experience, but sometimes people are falling asleep.

In the case of Ludum Dare, I submitted my game and went to take a nap. I got up to see how others scored my game but also to play some others and provide feedback. It is always interesting to see peoples interpretations!

If (and when) any of these steps fail, realize you are doing it for fun!

Resources from the Roblox Creator Game Jam 2024

Hi Creators!

At the beginning of the year, the Roblox Creator organization (the people that focus on building things for all of you creators!) got together for our second annual Game Jam. Everyone from engineering, product, design, art, and more spent a week in between our busy jobs to build experiences, assets, and plugins with Roblox Studio.

These annual game jams provide a way for those of us who work everyday to improve creating on Roblox to check in and see all of our progress over the last year. And more importantly they allow us to see how much we can still improve. It’s one thing to see a bug reported on the developer forum, and another to run into it yourself! We keep a running list of all the sticking points we run into over the course of the jam so that we can work on them over the next year.

In addition to being beneficial to our jobs, game jams are just plain fun! It’s a great excuse to get excited about the platform, and to work with folks that we normally don’t have a chance to, which can lead to all sorts of new connections and ideas. There’s a huge variety of experience in the Creator organization, so there’s always something to learn. And it means you’ll see people who’ve never made a game before working with folks who used to be (or still are!) Roblox creators themselves.

During Game Jam, anything goes and it shows! The only rule is that we have to show off whatever we made at the end of the week. This diversity and sense of fun leads to tons of fun and wacky projects, and plenty of learnings that we can use over the next year to help us make creating on Roblox even better!

:grinning:

Without further ado, here’s some of the experiences we wanted to share:

Server Authoritative Tennis

Server Authoritative Tennis

This tennis game appears simple on the surface, but utilizes 'UnreliableRemoteEvent’s under the hood to create a totally server authoritative, secure experience. We also built a prediction and rollback model to make for a completely smooth experience.

We start by defining a structure for the shared state of the court, which includes the position and velocity of the ball as 'Vector3’s, the player position and directions as 'Vector2’s, and any currently active impacts.

Clients send “actions” to the server, either a swing or a move. Swings are sent through RemoteEvents, as we want to be sure they come in, but movements are sent through UnreliableRemoteEvents, because if one of those packets drop, we can feel safe knowing we will eventually get another packet to replace it.

We then have a function that will take the current state and an action, along with a timestamp of when they happened, and produce a new state. Crucially, this does not mutate the original state in any way. This is to allow us to keep a copy of the original states for rollback. In order to stay responsive, the client predicts its own state based on inputs from the user and the last known state of the server.

The client reports each of its events to the server along with a timestamp obtained from ‘Workspace:GetServerTimeNow()’. After validating that the timestamp is within a reasonable range, the server rewinds back to a snapshot of the state at that time, applies the event, and re-simulates back to the current point in time. This allows all events to be simulated at the exact time that they should have happened, rather than with a delay.

The server reports the latest state back to all the clients, which they can then use as the new source of truth to predict from. Because the state on the server is constantly being re-written based on older inputs from the client, players with poor connections may appear jittery to the other players. In order to mitigate this, some simple interpolation is applied to the characters of other players on the client.

Ghostwriter

Ghostwriter

Ghostwriter offers a unique language learning experience by turning vocabulary and spelling exercises into engaging gameplay. Players are challenged to type translated words within a tight time frame, providing a fun and interactive way to master new languages.

One distinctive feature we’re excited to showcase is how we implemented 2D. While most experiences on Roblox focus on 3D immersive gameplay, we chose 2D art to keep the focus on language learning. By fixing the camera on the vertical axis and extensively utilizing surface GUIs and billboard GUIs, we can render sprites effectively while still leveraging collision detection, physics, and other useful APIs. This approach allows us to enjoy the benefits of a 2D interface without sacrificing the interactive elements that make games enjoyable.

Most importantly, it enabled us to rapidly iterate on the gameplay, ensuring that the core language learning loop is highly polished within the constrained time frame of the game jam!

ObbyVoice is an obstacle course game, but with a twist that sets it apart. By utilizing Roblox’s new audio API, we made a game where players use the volume of their voice to control their character. Actions such as walking, running, and jumping depend on how loud or soft someone speaks into their microphone. This feature added a fun and interactive element to some classic obby gameplay.

The Audio API’s design, which we affectionately referred to as “wire” due to its intuitive and seamless way of connecting audio components, truly brought our voice control concept to life. By establishing a connection between AudioDeviceInput and the local player using a wire, and then linking it to AudioDeviceOutput within the workspace, we created a feedback loop that allowed us to hear our own voices during gameplay for quick testing in minutes.

We then connected an AudioAnalyzer to the AudioDeviceInput to precisely measure the volume levels of the player’s voice. This enabled us to adjust the voice control thresholds for walking, running, and jumping, turning the calibration process into an entertaining experiment in itself. The task of balancing these thresholds provided plenty of laughs, particularly when it involved explaining to curious family members why we were alternately shouting and whispering at our screens for hours. This part of the project really showed us what Roblox’s audio tech could do, but more than that, it reminded us how much fun it is to make something new and cool together

What about an endless runner where you scream to jump? But good use of the new Audio API!

Yes… Yes! This is what VC should be used for. And now, bring all blind monsters in a squad!!!

Are these game jams exclusive for staff? Forgive me if I am uninformed. I’ve been looking for game jams in the Roblox community recently and if Roblox is hosting any that would be awesome!

I think it’s the Roblox 2024 Creator Challenge , you should be able to find it if you scroll down a bit in # updates:community

it’s already over sadly so you’ll have to wait

This isn’t the creator challenge. This is an internal gamejam where Roblox staff get to use the products they are building every day. Developers cannot participate.

Hm I thought it was the 2024 challenge because of the title.

The Ultimate Guide to Game Jams

  • January 26, 2023 January 23, 2024
  • Gamedev Resources

You’re likely here because you’re thinking of getting into game jams and looking for advice, or just curious about what they are! Well, we’ve tried writing a holistic guide, applicable to jams for both video and tabletop games!

Illustration of a horse eating some toast with "Game Jam".

What are game jams?

What are the biggest game jams, what games were made in a game jam, why should i join a game jam, how to participate in a game jam.

  • Advice on making the most out of game jams

Game jams are events where games are created with specified design constraints. To elaborate, these events, whether in-person or online, encourage game devs to create games with design restrictions to prompt creativity. These restrictions and game jam themes vary greatly, ranging from any of the following:

  • Time : Most game jams are short, lasting from anything from a few hours to weeks and even years! (Check out the  Decade Jam ). Generally, all game jams have a set deadline for submissions, likely coming with either simpler or more detailed constraints in response.
  • Theme/Topic : Some game jams have specific themes or topics that unify all game submissions. This could be broad fantasy themed game jams, to something as specific as making something based off a niche horror film from the 90s.
  • Genre : Most games include gameplay that’s formulaic enough to be sorted by genre, this means platformers, puzzles, FPS and more! These genre based game jams test jammers’ ability to create something unique to these common types of games.
  • Tools used : Sometimes, game jams specify which game engines, software or other tools you’re meant to use (or not use). Popular game engines such as GameMaker, Unity and Unreal Engine have regular and popular game jams that use their own products. Beyond that though, there have been game jams that restrict the type of art programs, music/audio software and even medium for traditional artwork.
  • Platform/Medium : Beyond tools, the specific platform might result in interesting design constraints. For example, the  GameBoy Jam  restricts game submissions to requiring the Game Boy’s 60px x 144p aspect ratio and 4 colours.
  • Artistic assets/Art Direction : Similar to the tools used, some game jams aim to have art assets of a certain style. For example, having all art assets be made in pixel, or hand drawn!
  • Inputs : An interesting design challenge is restricting what sort of player inputs are available for jammers. To give an example, one or two button inputs are sure to encourage focus on the game’s narrative or other elements to make it unique!
  • Length : Some game jams even have limitations on how long the game or experience should be, forcing jammers to think critically about what they’d like to deliver to players in such a short time frame. For example, the  One Minute Jam  asks developers to create memorable impressions within a single minute of gameplay. Tough but potentially creativity inducing!
  • A hybrid of the above Mixing things together sometimes helps with reducing the load on game jammers’ to start making something!
  • And much much more!

The last paint jam.

There are heaps of game jams running at once everyday, but generally the most popular ones will be tied to either popular content creators (that is, popular streamers, devs, gamers etc.) or organisations (such as Unity, Unreal Engine, GameMaker etc.)

For a full list of some of the game jams hosted on Itch.io, check out  this comprehensive calendar.  Besides that there’s  this giant gantt chart  of indie game jams. (Be patient! There’s a lot to load!)

Itch.io's large game jam calendar of events.

But… those calendars can get overwhelming, so we made a new list! Here are the most popular game jams (for both video games and tabletop games):

  • Global Game Jam (UPDATE 23/01/2024: Global Game Jam is kicking off this week! Check out the full list of games and Global Game Jam sites here !)
  • Nordic Game Jam
  • Unity Play Showcase
  • GMTK Game Jam (Game Maker’s Tool Kit)
  • Unreal Engine’s Epic MegaJam
  • My First game Jam
  • GitHub Game Off
  • One Page RPG Jam  (TTRPG Jam)

Ludum Dare

For some popular game jams organised by popular content creators:

  • Wowie Game Jam
  • Blackthornprod Jam

If you’re asking what game jams went off to be refined, further developed, and reached commercial success… some popular titles are:

  • Goat Simulator
  • Va-11 Hall A
  • Baba is You
  • Donut Country
  • Inscryption

And many more! Be sure to check out  itch.io  for even more, sorted by specific game jams!https://web.archive.org/web/20230208112547if_/https://giphy.com/embed/bKNRMuPMY0hmdFpoO7Commercial success is not a metric to determining the merit of the game you made, especially for a jam!

  • It’s fun to create!

Part of the joy of making games is, of course, making games. Cool visuals, exhilarating action, touching stories… the process of making these is fun and especially for developers, an essential part of the work!

  • Something for the folio

After completing a game jam, you’ll have a new title under your name for your folio! Doing so also keeps your skills sharp and relevant!

  • Learn new skills as you experiment

Game Jams are a great way to experience the entirety of the game development cycle, usually in a short span of time! Whether it’s production planning, time management, art asset creation, working with a team and more!

  • Be as weird as you’d like

Something that doesn’t get mentioned very often is that games are an art form. Commercialisation limits certain topics or themes for general palatability, but game jams are the space for you to be as weird as you’d like! Whether it’s a niche special interest or “ugly” art style you’d like to explore, that’s entirely up to you!

  • Make new friends and connections

In game jams that involve teaming up with strangers, you might meet people who end up being long term connections, potentially even collaborators on future projects. Even amongst solo jams, participating in Discord servers and more are great ways to get to know other jammers!

An illustration of two people talking to each other.

What to do before joining a game jam :

  • Decide what you’re doing: Is it a solo jam or team? Who are you bringing along?
  • Prepare your tools: What sort of software or other tools do you need? Make sure they’re up to date and already working! (We have a blog on  tools we use as a game studio  if you’re looking for reference!)
  • Organising food and drink: To avoid missing meals or eating unhealthily, prep your food beforehand!

What to do during a game jam :

  • Ideation: Set time to brainstorm potential ideas, and keep to it! You don’t want to get stuck ideating.
  • Getting the GDD together: Synthesise your ideas into a game design document! This will keep things focused when you actually start production!
  • Scoping out work and planning: Cut down things and plan how you’ll be using your time!
  • Take breaks: Remember to eat and drink and shower! Burnout is ick, and this event is meant to be fun!
  • Ask for help: If there are any problems, always reach out to someone for assistance, maybe even encouragement!
  • Playtest: Make sure to allocate sufficient time for testing that the game works!
  • Strive for done not perfect!

What to do after a game jam:

  • Rest and celebrate!
  • Post it and receive feedback: In your planning phases, you should strive to allocate some time for submission!
  • Play fellow jammers’ games and leave feedback!
  • Consider next steps (Optional): Potentially, you might be thinking of taking your project further, whether an expansion, a second instalment or more!

Some advice from the team if you’re joining a jam:

“You want to be spending as much of the jam time as possible implementing stuff, and less time experimenting and scraping stuff. Especially if you’re working solo, it’s not uncommon for teams to throw out the first few days’ efforts and start over because the mechanic wasn’t fun.  To reduce risk and help with narrowing down ideas quicker, I choose a general “genre” and set of base mechanics to commit before the jam. For example, in LD52, I chose “platformer”. Then, when the theme was revealed I worked out if there was a novel way I could innovate on a platformer’s mechanics with that theme, essentially figuring out a “hook” for it. I do this because I understand platformer mechanics and how to juice them, meaning there’s less experimentation involved. I just have to experiment on the novel stuff, be it some mechanic or narrative, which will make the game stand out. When you’re making something “new”, it’s not about creating something entirely new, but building on top of what’s already out there. Besides this, go with what you know how to use! Whichever tool that doesn’t slow you down and stress you out (Eg. Unity’s loading screens), will save you precious development time. If using something unfamiliar means I am spending 10% of my time coding and 90% of my time searching and reading documentation, then it’s not a good trade off. Choose something you know intimately and lightweight for a jam to reduce the stress! Consider researching learning something else in prep for the next jam instead! Lastly, expect to fail the first few times! Game jams are hard, and completing something is an achievement. I’m still working out how to be proficient at game jams and what I’ve worked out so far is to just survive a jam and submit something in the end.” Dom  (@dom_dere)

A Definitive Guide to Completing Your First Game Jam

A Definitive Guide to Completing Your First Game Jam

Taryn McMillan's photo

Last week I participated in the 2021 GameDev.tv Game Jam .

It was technically my second game jam but it was the first one where I really felt 100% committed. The jam was so fun from start to finish and now that I’ve had time to process it, I wanted to write down some tips for any other developers interested in doing one.

This article will be focused mostly on game jams, but I think the tips can also apply to hackathons or other time-sensitive coding projects . Feel free to use the links I've provided to skip to the area of the article that's most relevant for you.

Done better than perfect.png

1. The Basics

What is a game jam, where can i find game jams to enter, what programming languages do i need to know, 2. tips for completing your first game jam, stick to your skill set, done is better than perfect, adhere to the theme.

  • Don't overwork yourself

Engage with the community

3. conclusion.

  • Parting words & encouragement

Stick to the theme.png

OK let’s get the basics out of the way. What is a game jam anyway ?

If you’re new to game development, then you might be wondering what a game jam is and whether you should participate in one. For a long time I would see game jams pop up on my Twitter feed and marvel at all of the awesome projects people were working on. But at the same time, I’d dismiss my own abilities and think I’d never be good enough to work on a game jam myself. Oh, how wrong I was. As it turns out, game jams are for developers of all skill levels, not just experts . In fact, I think that working on a game jam is one of the best ways for new game developers to build confidence, design and work on a project from start to finish, and level up their coding skills.

Game jams can be anywhere from a few days to a month long, but most average out at about a week to ten days . Every game jam has a theme. Sometimes it is a total secret, but sometimes the theme is voted on by the community before the jam actually begins. Depending on the jam, there may be different rules regarding the use of assets from places like the Unity store but the general rule of thumb is that free assets are OK, paid assets are not. And of course, attribution is necessary when you’re using assets that are not your own!

Once you’ve submitted your game, there’s a period from a few days to a few weeks when you have the chance to rate other games that have been submitted. Usually there are different categories you base your rating on such as Gameplay, Visuals, Audio, and Adherence to the Theme. While a game jam doesn’t typically award prizes, at the very end of the rating period you get to see how your game scored in relation to other projects in the jam. This is excellent feedback that you can carry forward and apply to future projects in your game development journey .

Don't overwork yourself.png

Now that you understand the basics about game jams, you might be wondering where to find them. The best place to look is on Itch.io , which is a free game-hosting platform . You’ll see a ‘Jams’ link right in the top menu bar on the homepage. On the Jams webpage, there is a full color-coded calendar which displays current and upcoming jams. Each jam has its own webpage with additional information about the theme, duration, any special rules, a community tab, and a sign-up link. You can even host your own jam but as a beginner, I recommend joining an existing one to get some experience first.

Screenshot 2021-06-11 at 11.26.15 AM.png

So let's say you've found a game jam you're interested in but you're not sure if your coding is up to snuff. The good news is that if you're not much of a programmer, there are ways to make games without knowing much about coding at all . While most game making programs do require you to have some coding knowledge if you want to make something customized or unique, programs like Twine or GameMaker are beginner-friendly options for the non-coder. Of course, if you're considering a career in game development, then you'll probably want to spend the time learning one of the two main game engines: Unity (C#) or Unreal (C++).

The program you use will depend on the game jam you choose . Some jams specify a program/language, while others allow the developer to choose. Pay careful attention to the game jam instructions and make sure you're following the rules before you start working on a submission.

In case you're new to game development, I made a chart which shows the most popular game development software and their associated languages. Keep in mind that some of these programs officially support additional languages beyond what I've included in this chart.

Tips for completing your first game jam

OK, now that we’ve got the basics out of the way, let’s look at some tips for trying your very first game jam. These are tips I wish I had known a year ago so that I could have tried one sooner. A lot of these tips will apply to hackathons too so if you’re a web developer I hope you find them useful.

A game jam is probably not the best time to try to learn an entirely new branch of coding or try out a complex piece of syntax. Of course, it’s great to challenge yourself but trying to take on something overly complex will not be in your best interest .

For my most recent game jam project, I knew I wanted to practice using for loops because they’re something I still feel uncomfortable with. I definitely pushed myself out of my comfort zone a bit by using nested loops but I didn’t try anything crazy with my code. There’s a fine line between challenging yourself and designing a project that’s impossible to finish within the timeline of the jam . Make sure you know where your skills are at before starting so that you don’t end up over-committing and having to scale things back at the last minute.

When you’re working with a time limit, it’s more important to get your project done than have it be completely bug-free . Most game jams acknowledge this up front. There will be time to iron out small issues or build upon the features you’ve got in your project later. Community members who rate your jam game will also be aware that there were limits to the amount of features you could build. They’re not expecting to see a Triple A game when they click on your page by any means. And having bugs to fix or issues to iron out is a fun project you can tackle once the rating process is over and the jam is officially finished.

I’ve seen so many game jam submissions that only vaguely touch on the theme. I guess it’s not a huge deal but I think it’s kind of disappointing because creating something based on the theme is part of the challenge and the fun. It’s a great chance to flex your creative muscles, particularly if you’ve been stuck in a rut. It sucks as a community member when you have to give an objectively good game a lower rating because it doesn’t fit the theme. So spend some time thinking upfront about how your game will incorporate the theme before diving in and building it . The best jam submissions are ones that reflect the theme organically. Trust me-- you can tell when the theme has been jammed into a game at the last moment and your rating will probably reflect this.

Don’t overwork yourself

We all like to joke about how we work late into the night or even pull all-nighters and this is fine once in a while. But if you can help it, don’t make overworking a habit . A game jam or hackathon can be an important milestone in your developer journey, but odds are that it’s not worth sacrificing your mental and physical health over. So take care of yourself and get some sleep! Bug fixing in particular is something that is often so much easier after a good rest. Honor yourself and the work you’ve put into your game by keeping your mind and body healthy, fit, and strong .

So let’s say you end up submitting something that’s unfinished or that you’re not really happy with. That’s OK! One of the most important aspects of a game jam is totally independent from the quality of your project, and that’s connecting with the community . Most game jams host a Discord server or discussion forum where you can start meeting fellow developers before the submission period even begins. During the rating period, you’ll have the chance to trade feedback with them and discuss design and technical issues. It doesn’t even matter whether your game is what you thought it would be; take advantage of this unique opportunity to connect with other developers who have the same skills and passion as you . I’ve met so many cool people through jams and typically everyone in the community has been friendly and inviting.

Engage with community.png

I hope this article familiarized you with game jams and made you feel more confident about participating in them.

Game jams are an awesome way to meet other developers, practice coding, and flex your creative muscles . Even if you're a beginner without much experience under your belt, there are ways to participate in a game jam and you shouldn't shy away from the awesome opportunity to level up your skills.

For seasoned veterans, game jams are a great way to test out a new game idea or mechanic. A jam's built-in rating system provides automatic feedback and is an indispensable resource for developers.

So what are you waiting for? Get your jam on and go see what you can create!

Game jams: tips for beginners, from a beginner

Matt Edwards

Matt Edwards

I'm a beginner at game development, but hopefully you can learn from my exploits and mistakes. I practice with Unity and Blender, and I also write about games every so often as well.

More posts by Matt Edwards.

Game jams can be seen as events that are only for people who already have the skills to build a game from scratch. Depending on the theme and the type of game you want to make, you may think you need to already know how to program, how to build assets, and how to create a compelling gameplay experience with the tools you have. Fortunately, all you need is a motivation to learn something new !

For people like me, with little to no programming experience, they can initially seem a little intimidating. With a clear goal at the end though, there is no reason why game jams cannot be used as a project for your learning experience. You might not have something very complex by the end, and you may not even have a finished game. That’s not important! If your goal is to use a game jam as a learning experience, then the best thing you can do is take away more knowledge than you went in with.

I participated in the recent GameDev.tv Community Jam as a fresh game developer, and in my case, I wanted to use the experience alongside my progression through the 2D Unity course . At the time, I had only spent about a week working on very basic C# content, with a few months worth of Blender practice, so I knew how to navigate the courses and what to expect.

I wasn’t going into this with an expectation of creating a game outside of the course content, because it would be taking too much on, and at a very early stage. Instead, I decided to use the experience to work through the content at my own pace, while trying to add extra features of my own .

I didn’t upload my game in the end because I felt it was too similar to the stuff in the course, but I came away with some useful coding experience despite my lack of coding experience. Knowing how to set achievable and realistic targets is key to avoiding procrastination and eventually giving up. Next time, I hope to have a few practice projects under my belt so I can try a game from the ground up – or at the very least, help other teams with some extra 3D assets.

Pacing yourself – and your skills

I had to balance a full-time job alongside the 2D Unity course , so I only had so much time to build upon and enhance the projects. I decided to try and create a bomb timer to fit the theme of the game jam.

While learning how to create a text-driven game that handles multiple choices, I also wanted to build on that with an additional idea of my own to try and challenge myself and do some self-study.

To achieve this, I had to make use of some of the resources introduced in the course as well as some helpful YouTube tutorials that show how to create the basics of what I need.

Eventually, with help from this video , I found a way to cobble together a timer that managed to count down from a certain point in time, unchanged by scene changes to keep it simple enough for me to implement. I wanted the timer to trigger a separate game over scene when it reached zero, as well.

game jam tours

If you're interested, scroll to the end of this post for the code . There are likely alternative ways to get to the same end goal, but so long as your code isn't throwing up any errors, I wouldn't worry about it at this stage!

The important thing to take away from this is that I wanted to add something extra, but I also wanted to achieve a realistic goal. Considering I only started learning C# shortly after the jam had begun, and that I also work full-time hours, I wanted to take small steps rather than trying to create the next masterpiece video game!

Working with others

On this occasion I worked alone, and I think that hampered me. It was too easy to become stuck in a rut and procrastinate a little, whereas in a team you’ll be able to bounce ideas off of other people and learn how something may be solved.

I had the freedom to work on my own project, but that came at the expense of having teamwork. I neglected the look and feel of my game because my core task was trying to get the mechanics to work correctly, and if I had worked with some other group members I could have implemented other things like a fancy 3D background or really neat pixel fonts and artwork.

Do not be scared to work with others – the community is very welcoming and everyone is here to learn! Even the smallest bit of help you lend to another team can help them out through giving them one less thing to worry about.

Eating and resting well

This definitely applies more to game jams that only last for a couple of days – the first ever game jam I tried in my hometown was a 48-hour slog – but month-long events may also fall into some period of crunch as the deadline looms.

Ensuring you maintain a healthy approach to work will mean you won’t burn out or suffer from a sugar crash. Yes, it’s very easy to fall into a habit of living on sugar, coffee and pizza – but combine that with a lack of exercise, and you’ll be feeling incredibly rubbish in the run-up to the deadline, as well as for a period afterwards.

Encourage your teammates to get some rest, take sufficient breaks and to eat some green things every now and then.

Timing is key

You will likely run out of time to do everything you want. Instead, plan for creating a project and bringing to completion in a shorter time frame than you are actually given – this will give you some wriggle room in case you are in need of extra time.

This may mean that your project may be more bare-bones than you initially suspect – but that is okay! If you find yourself with time left over after creating the core of the game, then you can start implementing the nice-to-have extra features.

It’s a daunting experience to throw yourself into a game dev challenge, but nobody is expecting the next blockbuster to come from a game made in a matter of days. I t is all about learning new things with other people who share your interest. Who knows, you might want to keep your team together for games that aren’t restricted to a theme or a time limit.

My code is below. This allowed me to create a timer that resets if the player runs out of time while playing. I plan to build on this later by stopping the timer if a win condition is achieved - perhaps you have other suggestions?

Small and special: The best game jam games to play right now

Global Game Jam Games 2023

Image: Global Game Jam

Short, collaborative, worldwide, accessible game-making events are entirely my… jam. Indeed, I have participated in many a game jam; sleeping under desks, making music, prototyping an audio game with a physical guitar as the game board . I was even the programmer on a tiny point-and-click adventure , thanks to the wonderful Unity tool, PowerQuest .

The 2023 Global Game Jam has now come and gone for another year, with an incredible 33,671 jammers in 107 countries . Jam games are generally free to play, often published alongside their source code, and are concise enough to cram into your tea break. Many of them are also incredibly good.

Read: Celebrate Gex Week with this Gex-themed itch.io game jam

I wanted to share some interesting game jam experiences I’ve found recently, culminating in a (suitably) tiny showcase of what you can expect to find in the Global Game Jame 2023 collection.

Trust Me, I Got This!

Pawlo purrcasso, you’re cookin’, good lookin’, global game jam 2023 picks.

Rolldown. Image: kindanice

Given tight deadlines, many jam games remain unfinished. Rolldown , however, is extremely finished. Created for GMTK Game Jam 2022 , it’s also a literal realisation of the jam’s theme: ‘Roll of the Dice’.

You are a die. You eliminate creatures by rolling onto them, but only when you have more ‘eyes’  than they do. So, because your first opponent is a cyclops, you hit when positioned adjacently, with two or more pips. Rats have two eyes, knights have three, and creatures get more ocularly encumbered, as the game progresses.

Creatures can also move and hit you, removing one of three hit points, even when they have fewer eyes, so landing next to them needs to be avoided. The core of this experience is positioning. If you can’t roll to a high pip location, force creatures through a choke point and hit first, you’re in trouble.

Levels are procedurally generated and it’s easy to spawn in a bad location, so in order to add another layer of strategy, you’ll find useful items, randomly, every few levels. There’s a wand that kills the nearest enemy and recharges over four movements, and a healing potion that recharges over six, among others.

Complete as it may be, I don’t know if Rolldown has an ending. I managed to get 15 floors. But it’s the kind of game you want to recommend to friends, hoping they can’t beat your high score. A fellow teacher at my work got 12. But, a student got 17. Now he’s in trouble, with both of us. How many can you get?

Trust Me, I Got This. Image: Circus Atos

I love hearing accents in games. Wayward Strand and Henry Mosse and the Wormhole Conspiracy , are two examples of games with Australian accents that immediately spring to mind. Trust Me, I Got This is the Czech handyman’s tiny take on Unpacking , made for Global Game Jam 2020.

Did I understand anything the handyman said? Only a few basic words, like ‘dobre’ meaning ‘good’, but I really enjoyed hearing the language, and getting the gist via emotional tone. Instructions are in English, but I’m sure I could have appreciated the experience if they had also been in Czech.

You’re given a short list of things to fix, and a small selection of tools. There are definitely a couple of life lessons to be learned here, but you can discover them for yourself. And you’ll definitely need a drink.

I particularly love that Trust Me, I Got This, is ‘inspired by real world events’. As I write this, my partner is painting the ceiling and making a mess. Some experiences are universal. Jam games are an invitation to engage with language and culture, so which areas of the world will you explore?

Pawlo Purrcasso by Spellgarden Games

Who put the world’s clumsiest cat in charge of an art exhibition? Especially one showing the work of such important painters; Wassily Catinsky, Marrianne von Werefcat. An accident was inevitable, and now you (that same cat) are tasked with mocking up replacement paintings.

I love jam games that are built on a simple gag, and then take it way too far. In Pawlo Purrcasso , made for Global Game Jam 2022, the destroyed paintings are so intricate, the colours you’re using are so wrong, your paws are so ungainly. Perhaps most ridiculous, you purr optimistically along to cheerful jazz as you work, seemingly oblivious to the fact you’re fooling exactly no one.

Why don’t more games explore blithesome failure? There’s no way to get anywhere close to any kind of win. Somehow, I still tried. I have no idea why.

After briefly meeting a student (now graduated) at a lecture one time, I was stoked when she got in touch to show me a jam game, reminding me of another great thing about game jams; students and recent grads. Bring me a jaded, old game developer who isn’t moved by enthusiasm and clever ideas and I’ll show them You’re Cookin’, Good Lookin’ , created for Yuri Jam 2022 .

Honestly? I could have included this for its title alone (like an amazing student game I saw at PAX one time, Hooked On a Ceiling , which also explained its feel-good grapple mechanic in four words). What happens when a veggie umami chef and a flower aroma baker are both averse to making dinner? A (single-player) martial arts battle, in which you can play as either wife.

In You’re Cookin’, Good Lookin’ , I did encounter bugs, like the battle not triggering, or beginning at ‘dessert’ rather than ‘entree’, but the animations alone are worth a couple of restarts. I quite enjoyed smacking one wife on the butt with a whisk, and was suitably shocked when she threw pepper. Combat is a little easy (if you’re spamming buttons) but I’d encourage players to explore all of the attacks and appreciate the timing, animation and the health-based, dynamic music system.

Students and recent grads bring the best ideas to game jams. I’m excited to see what these developers cook up next.

With the aim of concluding with examples from Global Game Jam 2023, I fell down a rabbit hole of interesting content (and given this year’s theme was ‘roots’, there were actually lots of games involving rabbits and rabbit holes). So many games. To narrow things down, I’d suggest searching ‘Global Game Jam 2023’ on itch.io , or choosing from diversifiers on GGJ’s site .

Simple standouts, for me, include, ‘Roof’ of the Problem (possibly a typo and not to be confused with several other games based on roots of problems), which casts you as a therapist for plant-headed couples. And Dude, Where’s my Baby?! , which has serious Shower With Your Dad Simulator vibes, although less nudity. I absolutely loved Don’t Look Down , a straightforward platformer with a detailed and compelling musical loop. And there are some great storytelling experiences, like Etymology , where familial connections are made via household artefacts.

Cracks game jam game

I was especially excited to find Cracks , which presents your journey through a landscape of intrusive thoughts, challenging you to focus on a more positive destination; a cup of tea. At each fork in the road, one path will cause the sound palette to become dissonant and uncomfortable, signalling the need to turn away. Most interestingly, the composition alters seamlessly, in a way I’m not sure I can fully discern. Melodies become less prominent, and harsher electronic elements are added, as well as filters applied, until it’s absolutely clear you need to retrace your steps.

Incredibly, I also found the perfect game to share last. My Global Game Jam 2023 is Over is about cleaning up the pizza boxes from a jam venue and viewing the photos taken, during the experience. Created by, and for, Game Boy (although you can play in a browser), I most appreciated the real (but very low resolution) pictures taken of headphones, food, jammers and general jam minutiae.

My Global Game Jam 2023 by Bad Dad

It’s like being an outsider looking in, perhaps from the very far future, when this jam is only a memory. It’s also very personal, with the creator documenting their wish to meet local game developers and even mentioning Lisboa Lusofona Universidade organisers by name. It’s a great reminder that game jams aren’t only about output, they’re also about community and learning.

I hope that this has encouraged you to play more jam games, maybe even to join a jam yourself. There’s no need to wait until next year. Check out who’s jamming today on itch.io .

Stephen and Damian Marley’s Brotherly Love

By Reshma B

On a warm evening last month, inside a cluster of nondescript office spaces south of Miami, a rehearsal studio with a giant lion’s head painted in red, green, and gold on the concrete-block wall hums with activity. Long after the businesses surrounding them have shut down for the day, Stephen “Ragga” Marley and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley are putting their band through its paces, tuning up for the Traffic Jam tour, which will be crisscrossing the U.S. and Canada through Mar. 30.

“Practice make perfect,” Damian, 45, says during a break in the session. “You want to get the show as tight as possible. You really want the thing to be like muscle memory so people are not thinking and it just becomes natural.”

The brothers’ determination to maintain the family legacy of musical excellence has not eased one bit over the years that they’ve accumulated 11 Grammy Awards between them as performers and producers. Over the years, Stephen has remixed their father’s classics and produced the likes of Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu. Meanwhile, Damian is one of the few artists to collaborate with both Nas and Jay-Z, along with more recent hip-hop collabs including a remix of Killer Mike’s “ Run .” While both are veterans at this point, they work harder than most rookies.

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Stephen and Damian have been sharing stages for more than a decade now, but Traffic Jam is their first co-headlining tour, a chance to work through their deep catalog of collabs, from the ganja love song  “Medication” to “The Mission,” a rugged statement of purpose affirming their commitment to spread the message of righteousness and Rastafari to the world.

They’ve been sharpening their craft in this rehearsal space since the early 2000s. If these walls could talk, they’d tell stories from the creation of Damian’s classic 2005 album Welcome to Jamrock , which was largely produced by Stephen. “I would be in the recording studio and it get a little monotonous,” Jr. Gong recalls, “so I’d come here with the band and start vibing lyrics live and take those ideas back to the studio.”

The bond between Stephen and Damian runs deeper than music, although they grew up in different households. “Steve is a big brother who really check on you when you’re little,” says Damian, who is Bob Marley ’s youngest child. Stephen used to pick him up from school. “We come from tie shoelace,” Damian remembers, “how fi play football and ride bicycle, up to music too.”

Stephen says he learned patience from Damian, while Damian credits Stephen for teaching him about everything from their father and their faith to how to sing on key and count bars. “So much things, too much to count.”

Now, after so many years of collaboration, they’re excited for the possibilities of their first official tour together as co-headliners.

“Myself and Damian get to do this catalog of music that we have together,” says Stephen with a twinkle in his eye. “We usually do it in pieces — me come pon him show, him come pon my show and do two songs. Now we’re doing a full set of the music that we have through the years. Trust me, the vibes is high.”

“We do this a whole heap of times before, but not billed,” says Jr. Gong. “When his album came out I went on the road with him, just rode the bus and showed up… So Steve and I tour all the while, but this is the first official billing.”

The Diddy Allegations Aren’t Entertainment. They’re Disturbing

Trans student nex benedict’s school district under investigation by education department, trolls targeted this librarian. now he's quitting to rediscover his library joy, florida republicans keep trying to argue that slavery wasn’t so bad.

“It was a hard time, still a hard time, “ Stephen says. “But still the music help carry me through and ting. Take time, find your footing, and keep moving same way.”

While Damian hopes the tour will allow for some healing, Ragga describes it as “a necessity — let me just say that. It was necessary for me go out there and do the music. Damian and Joseph was close too. So even this tour here, it necessary in more ways than one. People might not understand that part of it. But it’s necessary.”

Scottie pippen's 'no bull tour' nothing like what people expected, share this article.

Ever since “The Last Dance” came out in 2020, Scottie Pippen has been vocal about his displeasure regarding former teammate Michael Jordan. The Chicago Bulls teammates, who won six championships together, don’t seem to be very good friends anymore, as Pippen has knocked Jordan every chance he’s gotten.

Recently, Pippen and fellow former Bulls Luc Longley and Horace Grant embarked on the “No Bull Tour.” When it was announced, most assumed that Pippen, Longley, and Grant were simply going around ready to slew Jordan and “The Last Dance,” however, according to recent accounts of how the tour has been, that’s not the case.

Mark K of CHGO Sports recently attended and revealed that the tour wasn’t a “The Last Dance” defamation show. Instead, it was just the three guys talking about their careers.

“If you were hoping the No Bull Tour would be Scottie, Horace & Luc airing their grievances, you’d be disappointed,” Mark K tweeted. “It wasn’t a venting session. “They didn’t trash Michael or The Last Dance. “It was three mates having a laugh, talking their careers and bond. “It was great to see.”

Hearing those three tell their stories should make for a very entertaining show.

The NBC show was set to start production on its third season imminently but Deadline understands that it has now been paused.

Given that the show films up to a dozen episode across a small number of days, this can be somewhat of a challenge.

The first season kicked off with a preview in November 2021 before its regular timeslot in January 2022 and the second season premiered in March 2023. There’s currently no date for season three.

The show has performed well for NBC; the season 2 premiere averaged 31% higher ratings  than the first season’s average and it continued to  outperform season 1 over its run.

It comes after the show  entered the Emmy race ;  That’s My Jam  was nominated in the Outstanding Game Show category alongside ABC’s  Jeopardy! , which ultimately won the award, Wheel Of Fortune and Family Feud as well as CBS’ The Price Is Right – the first time that game shows were upgraded to the primetime Emmys after having previously been part of the daytime Emmys.

That’s My Jam  is produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio, a division of Universal Studio Group, in association with Fallon’s production company, Electric Hot Dog. Fallon, Jim Juvonen and Mike Yurchuk serve as executive producers with Yurchuk as showrunner.

Where do Palm Beach County's PGA Tour pros hang out, eat while not on the golf courses?

PALM BEACH GARDENS — When they’re not practicing or competing on the PGA Tour in events such as the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches , golfers who live in Palm Beach County love the variety of activities that the region offers.

From pastimes such as fishing and bicycling to attending sporting events to dining out on fresh, local seafood, there is no shortage of ways to spend their time off the golf course.

Daniel Berger is one of the few pros who didn’t move here from another state or country. Though he was born in Plantation, he grew up and still lives in Jupiter.

Now that he is 100% healthy after having constant back pain for more than two years, he said he feels good enough to play beach volleyball, tennis and pickleball. He’d even “go fishing for 12 hours on my boat in 5-foot seas and feel like a million bucks.

“Now I feel like I’m capable of doing that. But a year ago, no way.”

Daniel Berger, Adam Svensson, Eric Cole enjoy fishing

Berger enjoys fishing out of Jupiter Inlet and live-baiting for dolphin, wahoo, tuna and sailfish. If he needed a crew, he said he would probably call his brothers rather than his local tour player buddies because “they’re like my first mates.”

Adam Svensson played at Barry University in Miami and lived in Jupiter for a few years before moving to Hobe Sound so he could have a shorter drive to the Medalist Golf Club. He also is a serious fisherman.

Growing up in South Surrey, British Columbia, he fished for salmon in rivers with his father and uncle.

“I loved it, so I’ve always had fishing in my life,” Svensson said. “I used to do a little offshore fishing, but now it’s more inshore for snook. I’ll just put a little shrimp on the hook. Or I’ll just do bass fishing, I have a pond right beside my house.

“There’s a golf course called Eastpointe Country Club (in Palm Beach Gardens), I used to catch 5-, 6-, 7-pound bass there every day. It’s very relaxing.”

Like Svensson, Eric Cole doesn’t own a boat, but if friends invite him to go fishing on their boats, he’ll go.

“I like the idea of other people having the boat. I think that’s the way to do it. It’s more fun for me,” said Cole, who was born in California and lived in Orlando from ages 3 to 24. He moved to Tequesta and lived there for five or six years, then moved to Delray Beach, where he lived for three or four years before buying a house in Tequesta last year.

“I grew up in Orlando bass fishing, but down here I fish mostly offshore. Just being out there is what I like.”

When he’s home, Cole and his wife sometimes go to the beach in Jupiter. “One of the better things about South Florida versus Orlando is the proximity to the beach is pretty nice,” Cole said.

Shane Lowry and family bike around Palm Beach

Shane Lowry, a native of Ireland who moved to Jupiter six years ago, enjoys going to Juno Beach with his wife and kids. They also spend time in Palm Beach.

“We rent bikes and cycle around the island,” Lowry said. “We are very lucky, we have an amazing backyard. The weather is so nice we cook out a lot. We just take it easy at home. I just love being around here. The climate and the golf courses are just perfect for us.”

Erik van Rooyen has lived in Jupiter since August 2019. He goes back to his native South Africa once a year in December. When he’s not on the road playing golf, he enjoys spending time with his family.

“I hang out with my kids, be a dad, go to the beach, go to the gym, play a bit of guitar, I do that when I’m not raising my kids,” he said.

Van Rooyen plays golf at The Bear’s Club, Turtle Creek and Panther National. Off the golf course, he spends time with several of his pro buddies.

“Shane Lowry lives in my neighborhood so we grab a bite to eat every now and then, and our wives are good friends as well,” said van Rooyen, who also hangs out with “all the South Africans in the area — Branden Grace, Garrick Higgo, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, (Charl) Schwartzel.”

Svensson plays with fellow tour pros at Medalist but doesn’t spend time with them off the course.

“There’s a lot of guys at Medalist that I hang out with, but once I’m done with golf it’s kind of just my friends I’ve had over the years,” he said.

Max Greyserman, who recently moved from Boca Raton to Palm Beach Gardens, likes to take his dog for a walk on Juno Beach, where people can also swim and surf fish.

“It’s such a great place to live because you have the calmness and quietness of Palm Beach County, the golf, and then if you want to drive down and get like a New York City type of environment, go to Miami,” he said.

Like Svensson, Greyserman said “The guys that I play with the most at Medalist I would say are not the guys I hang out with the most. I play the most with Pete Uihlein, Matt Wolff and Aaron Wise at Medalist. I hang out the most with Denny McCarthy. He lives in Jupiter and Denny and I bothhave goldendoodles.”

Panthers home games on the menu for local golfers

When he’s not on the road, Cole said he likes to simply relax and hang out with his wife and their dog. But he will go to the occasional hockey game in Sunrise.

“I’m a Florida Panthers fan,” he said. “I go to a decent amount of those games. They’re having a great year, too. I try to make it to a game or two when I can.”

Svensson grew up watching hockey in Canada, but he’s typically exhausted when he returns home from tournament play.

“I went to one Panthers game maybe two years ago. I love hockey. It’s just hard to find the time,” he said. “I played 35 events last season and I just want to come home and do nothing."

Lucas Glover, who’s lived in Jupiter for nearly 10 years, enjoys pro sports, but he’s really into youth sports. When the former U.S. Open champion isn’t playing golf, he spends time with his 10-year-old daughter, who plays softball and basketball, and his 8-year-old son, who plays hockey.

“I don’t go to the beach much, I kind of go from the golf course to school pickups to whatever sports practices are going on,” said Glover, who plays golf out of The Bear’s Club and Tequesta Country Club. “I’ve been to a couple of Panthers games, been to a couple of Heat games, been to a coupleof spring training games in Jupiter and Port St. Lucie.”

Cole also plays golf out of Tequesta Country Club, often with Nick Hardy, who moved to Tequesta from Arizona.

“I hang out with him a lot when we’re at home or on the road,” Cole said. “Our wives are friends with each other, so it’s great. We go out to dinner.”

Where do the pro golfers eat in Palm Beach County?

Speaking of dinner, many of the pros like the same restaurants.

Cole likes Hog Snappers in Tequesta, Food Shack in Jupiter and Lynora’s, which has locations in Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens. Greyserman also likes Hog Snappers and Lynora’s, as well as Kitchen in Palm Beach Gardens.

“If I had to choose one restaurant, it’s Leftovers Café in Jupiter,” he said. “They have all fresh seafood, daily.”

Glover is a fan of Leftovers, Lucky Shuck in Jupiter and Lynora’s. Lowry enjoys 1000 North in Jupiter and Lola 41 in Palm Beach.

More: Rory McIlroy says he's made the turn in his career: 'Maybe on the 10th green or 11th tee'

Svensson rarely goes out for dinner, but one of his favorite places is U-Tiki Beach in Jupiter.

“I try not to eat out as much when I’m at home just because I eat out so much when I’m traveling,” he said. “My girlfriend usually cooks, so it’s nice to have a home-cooked meal. But U-Tiki’s a great spot, I love the sushi there.”

Camilo Villegas of Jupiter will be a player director on the PGA Tour Policy Board starting Jan. 1, 2025, which means the 42-year-old won’t have much free time off the golf course during his three-year term.

“As Adam Scott texted me this morning, ‘Enjoy 2024, because come 2025 you’ll be a lot more busy,’ ” Villegas said Wednesday. “So I guess I might spend a little more time on my bicycle this year because that’s my passion. I love riding the bikes. A little bit of everything — road, gravel, mountain bike.Just good energy being out there pushing myself.”

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – When Bud Cauley returned to PGA TOUR golf last month after more than three years away from the game, he did it believing he could win again.

It’s one thing to think about. It’s another thing to actually do it.

Cauley’s proof is playing out at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches. Cauley fired a second-round 65 at PGA National to jump into the solo 36-hole lead at 11-under overall.

“There were a lot of times where I thought that my career was over,” Cauley said Friday.

Following surgery and recovery, Cauley returned to the TOUR in the fall of 2018 and played two full TOUR seasons, keeping his card both years. But his right side began to hurt again in fall 2020, causing him to step away. The time since has been mostly colored with doctor’s visits and physiotherapy clinics. He has had “a couple more surgeries that didn’t heal very well, and it was just a whole mess,” he said during the WM Phoenix Open, his first event back. He had a seroma – a buildup of fluids where tissue has been removed – and a C. difficile infection.

“Everything that could go wrong seemed to go wrong,” he said. But he eventually, after a successful surgery on his ribs and chest wall, felt healthy enough to attempt a return.

“It's hard to put into words how much you kind of miss something when you grow up doing it every day and you play golf every day, and when it gets taken away, it does change your perspective on just how fortunate we are to be able to play golf and even to get to do the thing that you enjoy doing,” Cauley said at the WM Phoenix Open.

Cauley made two rehab starts on the Korn Ferry Tour last month in The Bahamas, finishing a respectable T21-T35, then made the cut in his PGA TOUR season debut at TPC Scottsdale, finishing 65th.

Bud Cauley finishes T21 in first tournament action since 2020 Safeway Open

This week at PGA National has been a different beast. Cauley opened with a 66 on Thursday and followed it with a bogey-free 6-under round on Friday. Albeit just the second round, Cauley started to feel the juices of contention coming down the back nine.

“I saw the leaderboard when I was coming down 18 and knew if I made birdie I'd have the lead,” Cauley said.

He sank an 11-foot putt to make that the reality. Cauley played the famed “Bear Trap” in 2-under. He made a 16-foot birdie on the par-4 16th and escaped the difficult par-3 17th with a par.

A top finish would go a long way in securing Cauley’s future on TOUR. He has 26 starts remaining on a Major Medical Extension after finishing No. 83 on the 2020 FedExCup, needing to earn 391.355 points to keep his card. He can also earn his card back by finishing inside the top 125 of the FedExCup. A win secures that and plenty more.

That’s Cauley’s focus for now. He’s in a better position than ever before. He held a share of the lead after two rounds of the 2017 Valero Texas Open but had never held the solo lead until this week. He’s never won on the PGA TOUR.

His peers believe he has what it takes.

“He’s just too good of a player to not have won out here at some point,” Cauley’s good friend Justin Thomas told PGATOUR.COM last month.

For a long time, it looked like that win would never come. Nothing is guaranteed this weekend. Cauley knows that. But nothing in his life has been guaranteed for a long time. He’s ready to go out and earn it.

“To be back here playing and playing well, it's nice,” Cauley said. “It just makes me that much more happy that I kept after it and didn't stop trying.”

2024 Cognizant Classic scores: Rory McIlroy lurking as Bud Cauley leads at PGA National after Round 2

Cauley commands the 36-hole lead with plenty of star power on his heels heading into the weekend.

rory-mcilroy-2024-cognizant-round-2-g.jpg

Uproars of too many birdies and low scores Thursday at the 2024 Cognizant Classic gave way to blustery conditions and the PGA National course golf fans have come to know and love emerging on Friday. A day after playing about one and a half strokes under par, PGA National played about two strokes more difficult in the second round. While players struggled, Bud Cauley surged in the afternoon and heads into the weekend with the solo lead at 11 under.

Windy during the middle portion of the day, Palm Beach experienced a reprieve from breezes towards the end of Round 2 aiding the early-late wave. Cauley was right there to take advantage as he signed for six birdies and no bogeys to card one of the rounds of the day at 6-under 65.

It's almost poetic that Cauley found his way to the top of the leaderboard after a hard day given his difficult journey to this point. Away from the sport for three years due to injury, the 33-year-old has had to scratch and claw back to this stage. In only the second PGA Tour start of this comeback, he finds himself with a chance to win.

Cauley's path to the winner's circle won't get any easier over the weekend with names like Cameron Young, Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy in the mix. McIlroy continues to lurk around PGA National and backed up his opening 67 with another to sit three adrift at 8 under. The 34-year-old remained patient for most of his round before catching fire with two birdies around the Bear Trap and another on the par-5 finisher.

Encountering a rather inauspicious start to his PGA Tour season after winning on the DP World Tour to begin 2024, McIlroy continues to march forward and sharpen his game as the Masters approaches. His West Coast swing was riddled with short stretches of poor play that ultimately upended his chances of contending at Pebble Beach and Riviera. Through 36 holes, the 2012 champion has been able to dodge the big number, but they will continue to be a possibility over the weekend given the treacherous nature of PGA National.

1. Bud Cauley (-11)

Cauley is a name that has been around the PGA Tour for some time but not enough in recent memory. A single-car accident in which he was a passenger in the summer of 2018 left Cauley with six broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a broken leg. He returned to competition, but complications and surgeries forced him to the sidelines again in 2020.

He would stay there up until this year, and after a couple rehab starts on the Korn Ferry Tour, Cauley was ready for the main stage. The WM Phoenix Open marked his first official PGA Tour start since the 2020 Fortinet Championship and the beginning of his march toward fulfilling his major medical extension. This week could go a long ways towards that and a long way towards reminding fans  -- and maybe even Cauley -- of the type of golfer he is.

Here comes @BudCauley 👀 After missing the entirety of the past two seasons due to injury, he is just two back of the lead @The_Cognizant . pic.twitter.com/oUwUztTihe — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) March 1, 2024

Other contenders

T2. Austin Eckroat, Garrick Higgo (-10) T4. Kevin Yu, Victor Perez (-9) T6. David Skinns, C.T. Pan, Shane Lowry, Cameron Young, Rory McIlroy, Jake Knapp (-8)

The bevy of long shot winners coming through on the PGA Tour has been the big storyline in the early stages of the 2024 season, but the influx of European talent should not go unnoticed. The nine players on the PGA Tour who earned their status via finishing top 10 on the DP World Tour in 2023 have been fabulous to start the year, and Perez is the one carrying the torch this week.

"I think it's great," Perez said referring to DP World Tour players earning PGA Tour cards. "I don't know if the PGA Tour members particularly like it, giving 10 spots, and then there's been a winner with Matt[ieu Pavon], and then Sammy [Valimaki] finished second last leak, really close, coming down to the last hole with Jake. I think it's been great, but it shows that the game is becoming more and more global, and there's some great players coming out of Europe. It's a good group of guys. I think Robert [MacIntyre] played really well, as well, last week. Hopefully more of that for the 10 of us."

Rickie returning to form?

The downward trajectory of Fowler's game since his victory at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic has gone relatively unreported. He has struggled to piece his entire game together, experienced a poor Ryder Cup where he battled illness and has unfortunately carried this into 2024.

He spoke earlier in the year about needing to validate his 2023 with another strong campaign in 2024. His first five starts have not helped his cause as ball-striking issues have been met with putter problems. His second-round 67 in blustery conditions has propelled him into the mix at the Cognizant Classic, and perhaps it will propel him into the rest of the season.

"I would prefer it to be windy," said Fowler. "Partly I feel like it helps separate a little bit. Yesterday morning, we teed off late, but seeing the conditions with it being pretty calm in the morning, definitely allows for some scores. It's still not an easy golf course, but when it's windy you can make up more ground putting up a round under par. We'll see. Hopefully wind will stay up and that'll kind of get me back in a good position for the weekend."

Nice to see Rickie maybe find a little something today. It has not been smooth sailing in 2024. He came into this week ranked 174th out of 188 players in total strokes gained this season pic.twitter.com/BJs8ZPeynX — Patrick McDonald (@pmcdonaldCBS) March 1, 2024

2024 Cognizant Classic updated odds, picks

Odds via Sportsline Consensus

  • Rory McIlroy: 4-1
  • Cameron Young: 9-1
  • Austin Eckroat: 9-1
  • Bud Cauley: 11-1
  • Shane Lowry: 12-1
  • Garrick Higgo: 12-1
  • Jake Knapp: 16-1
  • Kevin Yu: 16-1
  • Victor Perez: 22-1

McIlroy is driving the cover off the golf ball at the moment and has gotten next to nothing out of his iron play. He stands at a price similar to that from pre-tournament and should be the benefactor of contenders wilting due to weekend nerves. The world No. 2 hasn't pieced it all together through 36 holes, but if he does, he should in with a very real chance come late Sunday evening.

What can you do at Moscow City?

  • Dine in style: Moscow City is home to 100+ cafes and restaurants, including Europe’s highest restaurant and ice-cream shop
  • See Moscow like never before: Ascend to one of Moscow City’s observation decks for an unparalleled panorama of Moscow

Moscow City is a multifunctional complex in the west of Moscow, which has come to represent the booming business of Russia’s capital. Its skyscrapers enrich Moscow’s skyline, contrasting the medieval cupolas and Stalinist high-rises. Visitors to Moscow City can enjoy entertainment high in the sky, as the complex is home not just to offices, but to restaurants, cinemas, viewing platforms, and museums.

History of Moscow City

Moscow City was first conceived in 1991 by honoured Soviet architect Boris Tkhor, who proposed to construct a business center in Moscow. It would be complete with gleaming skyscrapers rivalling those of New York and London, to reflect the new life and growing ambitions of post-Soviet Russia.

The chosen site was a stone quarry and disused industrial zone in western Moscow, in between the Third Ring Road and Moskva River. Initially, the territory was divided into 20 sections arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central zone. The skyscrapers would increase in height as they spiralled around the central section, with shorter structures built on the waterfront to give the taller buildings behind a view of the river.

Architect Gennady Sirota, who contributed to iconic projects such as the Olympic Sports Complex on Prospekt Mira, was selected as the chief architect, and many other world-famous architects were attracted to Moscow to realise their visions in Moscow City.

What can you see and do at Moscow City?

Where Moscow’s cityscape was once dominated by Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers , this is no more. Moscow City is home to eight of Russia’s ten tallest buildings, six of which exceed 300 metres in height. More buildings are still under construction there today, including the One Tower (which will be Europe’s second-tallest building). Once completed, Moscow City will comprise more than 20 innovative structures.

Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers was designed by its own architect, lending the cluster of skyscrapers a unique appearance. Aside from being a site of architectural wonder, Moscow City is a place for leisure and entertainment with over 100 cafes and restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinemas, viewing platforms, and more.

Federation Tower

  • East Tower: 374m, 97 floors; West Tower: 243m, 63 floors
  • Completed in 2017
  • Architects: Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger

The East Federation Tower is the tallest building in Moscow, and the second-tallest building in Europe after the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg. Visitors can enjoy a luxurious meal of seafood, truffles or steak at restaurant ‘Sixty’ on the 62nd floor of the West Tower, or visit Europe’s highest observation deck, ‘Panorama 360’, on the 89th floor of the East Tower.

Did you know? The ice cream and chocolate shop on the 360 observation deck are the highest in the world!

  • South Tower: 354m, 85 floors; North Tower: 254m, 49 floors
  • Completed in 2015
  • Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

The South OKO Tower is the third-tallest building in Russia and Europe. Here, you can visit ‘Ruski’ to dine on hearty Russian cuisine cooked on a real Russian stove, and have a drink in the ice bar. Alternatively, visit restaurant, nightclub and performance space ‘Birds’; the restaurant is the highest in Europe, situated on the 86th floor roof terrace alongside an observation deck. The OKO Towers are also home to karaoke club ‘City Voice’.

Did you know? Underneath OKO Towers is the largest underground parking in Europe, with 16 levels and 3,400 parking spaces.

Mercury Tower

  • 339m tall, 75 floors
  • Architects : Mikhail Posokhin, Frank Williams, Gennady Sirota

Another multifunctional skyscraper, which was designed as the first truly ‘green’ building in Moscow. The Mercury Tower has a distinct geometric shape and copper-coloured glazing, and was the tallest building in Europe upon completion. Visit ‘More i myaso’ (Sea and meat) on the first floor of the tower to enjoy European and Mediterranean cuisine whilst surrounded by greenery. On the 2nd and 40th floors a modern art gallery, the ‘ILONA-K artspace’, has just opened.

City of Capitals

  • Moscow Tower: 302m, 76 floors; St Petersburg Tower: 257m, 65 floors
  • Completed in 2009
  • Architect: Bureau NBBJ

The unique geometric design of the City of Capitals towers resembles stacks of rotating blocks, and is rooted in Constructivism of the early Soviet period (many Soviet Constructivist buildings can be found in Moscow). Visitors to the Moscow Tower can enjoy a range of cuisines – traditional Italian dishes on the summer terrace of ‘Tutto Bene’, Panasian cuisine in the tropical luxury of the ‘Bamboo Bar’ on the 1st floor’, and poke or smoothie bowls at ‘Soul in the Bowl’ cafe on the 80th floor.

Tower on the Embankment

  • Tower A: 84m; Tower B:127m; Tower C: 268m, 61 floors
  • Completed in 2007
  • Architects: Vehbi Inan and Olcay Erturk

After completion, the Tower on the Embankment was the tallest building in Europe, and is now the 13th tallest. It houses the headquarters of several large Russian and international  companies, including IBM and KPMG. There are two cafes located on the 1st floor of Tower C – self-service café ‘Obed Bufet’ (Lunch Buffet) and Bakery Chain ‘Khleb Nasushchny’ (Daily Bread).

Evolution Tower

  • 255m tall, 54 floors
  • Architects: Philip Nikandrov and RMJM Scotland Ltd

Evolution is Moscow City’s most recognisable tower, and the 11th tallest building in Russia. Its façade is a true architectural marvel, comprising continuous strips of curved glazing spiralling high into  the sky. According to the architect, Philip Nikandrov, the spiral shape of the tower honours centuries of architectural design in Russia, from the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral to Vladimir Shukhov’s Tatlin Tower, a masterpiece of Constructivist design. Outside the Evolution tower is a landscaped terrace and pedestrian zone descending to the Presnenskaya Embankment, which was also designed by Nikandrov.

Did you know? Moscow’s largest wedding palace was supposed to be built on the site of the Evolution tower, though the project was abandoned.

  • 239m tall, 60 floors
  • Completed in 2011

Imperia’s interesting design has a curved roof and an arched glass façade. Inside the tower are various cafes including ‘City Friends’ for all-day breakfasts and light lunches, ‘Mama in the City’ for simple meals of Russian cuisine, and ‘abc kitchen’ for European and Indian-inspired dishes. Alternatively, visit ‘High Bar’ on the 56th floor for cocktails with a view. In Imperia you’ll also find the Museum of High-Rise Construction in Moscow (suitably located on the 56th floor), and the Camera Immersive Theatre.

Did you know? Inside Vystavochnaya metro station is the Metro Museum , dedicated to the history of the beautiful Moscow Metro!

  • 130m tall, 26 floors
  • Completed in 2001
  • Architect: Boris Tkhor

Tower 2000 was Moscow City’s first tower. It stands on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, and houses a viewing platform from which visitors can admire an unparalleled panorama of Moscow City. The Bagration Bridge reaches across the river from the tower to Moscow City, and underneath are piers from where you can take boat trips.
