Cruise Ship Departments
The following are brief descriptions of some of the main positions aboard cruise ships that will give you a general idea of the qualifications and duties of each job. Shipboard employees are typically divided into departments relating to service, passenger accommodations (sometimes called “hotel services”), entertainment, and general ship maintenance, engine work, and safety. Different cruise lines use variations on these categories, but for our purposes, we have divided onboard job descriptions into the areas of Activity/Entertainment, Deckhands, Service/Hospitality, and Personal Care.
A fifth category is Office, which includes those jobs commonly available in corporate headquarters. If you want to work in an office environment and avoid a nomadic lifestyle and demanding tourists, this might be the right path for you. Going corporate is a way to get travel benefits and can be your key to a job onboard a vessel at a later time, if you so choose.
The majority of offices are either in Los Angeles or Florida. However, New York, Seattle, and various European cities also have their share. If you live in or near one of these cities, you are in luck. The types of jobs available are wide-ranging and include booking agents, receptionists, sales representatives, human resource representatives, and customer service personnel. Plenty of other jobs exist as well.
Activity and Entertainment Jobs
These positions are often synonymous with “cruise staff” and deal with anything relating to passenger entertainment. This department includes hosts and hostesses, cruise directors and staff, disc jockeys, performers, swimming instructors, and shore excursion staff. These positions are considered the most glamorous on the ship, and are probably the most sought-after jobs in the cruise industry.
This department is responsible for maintaining and running the vessel. On large ships, this department usually does not have many entry-level positions open to North Americans. People working in the deck department include deckhands, maintenance workers, engineers, and officers. It is their job to motor or sail the ship, attend to the physical maintenance needs of the ship, and keep it in accordance with fleet regulations and international maritime laws. Officers are in charge of passenger safety as well. The purser (the ship’s treasurer in charge of passenger accounts, tickets, changing currency, etc.) and his or her staff are also included in this department.
Service/Hospitality Jobs
These staff members have the responsibility of managing the restaurants, bars, and passenger cabins, as well as shipboard retail concessions like gift shops.
These workers take care of the increasing number of spa and beauty shop facilities found onboard, as well as the medical needs of the crew and passengers. Jobs in this department include salon operators, cosmetologists, beauticians, medical staff, massage therapists, personal trainers, and fitness instructors.
Office Jobs
These are generally onshore positions in which employees work in the main office arranging cruises or performing general office work. These positions include secretaries, booking agents, sales/marketing staff, and clerical workers.

Virgin Voyages is pitching a monthlong cruise to remote workers starting at $10K for two people
- Richard Branson's Virgin Voyages says it's launching a monthlong summertime cruise pass .
- Passholders would get to sail on four consecutive weeklong Mediterranean itineraries.
- The program, aimed at remote workers, starts at $9,990 for two people in one balcony cabin.
Richard Brandon's Virgin Voyages wants you to "WFH" this summer.
No, not home — "Helm," it said.
The adult-only cruise line says it's launching monthlong summertime passes, aptly known as the "Scarlet Summer Season Pass," starting at $9,990 for two people in one cabin.
Say goodbye to your desk and hello to destinations like Ibiza, Spain; Cannes, France; and Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy. With this pass, travelers would sail on four consecutive weeklong Mediterranean cruises.
Guests must pick from four preset embarkation dates, which all fall on the first or second week of June, July, August, and September.
During the month at sea, the Scarlet Lady would sail twice to nine ports in Spain, France, and Italy.
No more dingy desks: These remote workers get balcony cabins instead.
Passholders would spend four weeks at sea in one of Scarlet Lady's mid-tier "Sea Terrace" cabins.
The Scarlet Lady is Virgin's first ship, joining the fleet in 2021.
But first doesn't mean the worst: The balcony stateroom has plush amenities like rainfall showerheads, electronic blinds, and bright red hammocks on the balcony.
Don't worry: WiFi and coffee are included.
Cruise ships aren't traditionally known for having fast or stable WiFi. But according to Virgin, there's no need to worry about laggy Zoom meetings: The ship's internet was recently upgraded, now serviced by SES and Starlink .
To fuel those days at work, travelers would also get daily credit for specialty coffee and tea, although the $10 would have to be split between the cabin's two occupants.
Virgin Voyages promises pass holders entry to the ship’s “members-only” sundeck.
And no need to pack heavy: The cost also includes laundry services.
No more overpriced lunch salads or hastily made sandwiches: The ship has over 20 restaurants.
The Scarlet Lady's dining venues are complimentary, save for some upcharged dishes and "dinner shows."
This includes a Korean barbecue venue and a trendy vegetable-forward restaurant.
Companies have increasingly been issuing return-to-office orders.
But a spokesperson for Virgin Voyages said this hasn't been waning cruisers' interest in the pass.
Quite the opposite: Virgin says it might have to expand the program.
The cruise line had initially planned 40 passes (10 a month).
But "after seeing incredible demand," Virgin Voyages is now "considering" making more passes available, the spokesperson told Business Insider.

- EIA Drops 2024 Henry Hub Gas Price Forecast
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) cut its Henry Hub spot price forecast in its latest short term energy outlook (STEO), which was released this week.
In its latest March STEO, the EIA projects that the commodity will average $2.20 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) in the first quarter of this year, $1.79 per MMBtu in the second quarter, $2.28 per MMBtu in the third quarter, $2.82 per MMBtu in the fourth quarter, and $2.27 per MMBtu overall in 2024.
In its previous February STEO, the EIA forecast that the Henry Hub spot price would average $2.67 per MMBtu in the first quarter of 2024, $2.20 per MMBtu in the second quarter, $2.66 per MMBtu in the third quarter, $3.08 per MMBtu in the fourth quarter, and $2.65 per MMBtu overall in 2024.
“The U.S. benchmark Henry Hub natural gas spot price averaged an inflation-adjusted record-low of $1.72 per MMBtu in February,” the EIA stated in its March STEO.
“We forecast prices will stay under $2.00 per MMBtu in the second quarter of 2024 (2Q24) because we expect natural gas inventories will remain high relative to the five-year average as the United States enters the shoulder season when there is typically less U.S. natural gas consumption than at other times of the year,” it added.
“In our March STEO, the annual average Henry Hub price for all of 2024 averages almost $2.30 per MMBtu, 14 percent lower than in our February STEO,” the EIA continued.
The EIA noted in its March STEO that this winter, which it defined as November 2023 to March 2024, has been mild throughout much of the U.S. and stated that the country has experienced eight percent fewer heating degree days (HDDs) than the 10-year average.
“February was much milder than expected, with nine percent fewer HDDs than forecast in last month’s STEO,” the EIA said in the STEO.
“Because of the mild weather, we estimate combined residential and commercial sector consumption of natural gas this winter will be three billion cubic feet per day (Bcfpd), which is nine percent less than the previous five-year winter average,” it added.
“Reduced natural gas consumption for space heating and increased U.S. dry natural gas production, which we estimate will be about three Bcfpd more this winter compared with last winter, have contributed to above-average inventories,” it continued.
In its latest STEO, the EIA revealed that it expects U.S. inventories of natural gas will total 2,270 billion cubic feet at the end of the winter heating season on March 31. The organization highlighted in the STEO that this is 37 percent above the previous five-year (2019–2023) average for March, “contributing to historically low natural gas prices and to our expectation of low prices for the next several months”.
In a gas and LNG market update sent to Rigzone early on Thursday, Rystad Energy Senior Analyst Masanori Odaka said Henry Hub prices were down 13 percent to approximately $1.7 per MMBtu on March 12 “at the tail end of the winter demand season”.
“However, the market is approaching the floor for spot gas prices following recent news that Chesapeake Energy and EQT Corporation have curtailed gas production,” Odaka added in the update.
“This has started to materialize in Appalachia production levels, which have declined from highs of 35 Bcfpd in January to around 34 Bcfpd currently,” Odaka continued.
In that update, Odaka noted that Lower 48 gas storage continues to exceed the five-year range, “ensuring there is a short-term ceiling for prices and that withdrawals remain modest due to mild late-winter temperatures”.
“Storage levels are now 13.6 percent higher than in 2023 and nearly 31 percent higher than the five-year average. Late-winter temperatures are too mild to significantly impact storage,” Odaka said.
In a report sent to Rigzone this week, Standard Chartered projected that the NYMEX basis Henry Hub nearby future price will average $4.80 per MMBtu across the first and second quarters of 2024 and $4.70 per MMBtu across the third and fourth quarters.
J.P Morgan forecast in a report sent to Rigzone on February 26 that the U.S. natural gas Henry Hub price will average $2.45 per MMBtu in the first quarter of this year, $2.25 per MMBtu in the second quarter, $3.00 per MMBtu in the third quarter, $4.00 per MMBtu in the fourth quarter, and $2.93 per MMBtu overall in 2024.

Tech Hub slated for Rochester, upstate NY cities needs workforce. Can local colleges step up?
Monroe Community College is seeking $17.5 million to lead the effort to train thousands of workers in upstate New York’s three biggest cities for jobs in the semiconductor industry, according to a proposal submitted last week.
The funding would support MCC’s collaboration with colleges and training centers in developing a workforce in Buffalo, Syracuse, and Rocheste r to support tech giant Micron’s $100 billion investment in Onondaga County .
Some 5,000 mid-level positions and another 4,000 construction jobs in the semiconductor supply chain are envisioned, with a focus on hiring women and workers from ethnic and racial minorities.
The $17.5 million represents nearly a third of the $54 million a consortium representing the three cities — known as NY SMART I-Corridor Tech Hub — is seeking after beating out hundreds of competitors in October to be selected one of the nation’s 31 Tech Hubs.
In addition to MCC, Syracuse University would receive $15 million for an innovation initiative geared to harnessing the region’s academic research and development efforts. And the University of Buffalo would receive $8 million to assist local manufacturers as they pivot to work in the semiconductor supply chain.
The funding wish list was sent to the U.S. Department of Economic Development last week by NY SMART I-Corridor Tech Hub.
What are the region's chances for even more money?
October’s Tech Hub designation did not come with a funding guarantee.
In the competition’s second round, the region is contending with other tech hubs, including one from Binghamton , for a piece of roughly $500 million allotted for the program’s debut year. Between five and ten tech hubs will receive up to $75 million apiece.
Competition: Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse make cut in first round of high-dollar Tech Hub sweepstakes
U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, who co-authored the CHIPs and Science Act legislation that created the tech hubs, has been lobbying federal officials in support of the upstate bid.
“I’m very optimistic we’re going to get it,” Schumer said.
Coupled with Micron’s promise of nearly 50,000 jobs at a chip manufacturing plant near Syracuse, the job gains alone have the potential to transform vast swaths of the upstate economy.
“It will mean that parents and grandparents will no longer worry about their kids moving away to find a good-paying job in the future,” Schumer added. “They’ll be able to stay right here in upstate New York. I remember Kodak and Carrier and so many of the auto companies. Giants. They all closed and left and shrunk. But now we have a golden opportunity for upstate.”
Supporters say over the next ten years, one of every four U.S.-made semiconductor chips could be produced within 350 miles of the I-90 corridor, part of a national effort to wrest away China’s manufacturing dominance in the industry.
Momentum has picked up in recent months with the announcement of Edwards Vacuum’s plans to invest $300 million at a dry pump manufacturing plant in Western New York to supply the semiconductor industry.
And in November, TTM Technologies announced it would invest $130 million in a manufacturing plant in Onondaga County to produce circuit boards used in microelectronics.
Finding the workers
The leadership of the three-city effort says there’s plenty of work ahead to ensure there are enough workers to fill jobs.
“I think everybody has to do a bunch of things in the workforce base to attract new workers and get existing workers off the sidelines, which we think we can do because we’ve started doing that successfully on other projects,” said Benjamin Sio, a vice president with CenterState, which is leading the Syracuse part of the consortium. “And then generate the talent.”
Other companies looking to build upstate have faced similar challenges in recent months.
Li-Cycle: 'A big speed bump.' Li-Cycle CEO opens up about setbacks in Rochester facility
In November, the chief executive officer of Li-Cycle, which recycles metals for use in electric vehicle batteries, said the company’s decision to pause construction at the Eastman Business Park was due in part to a shortage of available construction workers in the region.
Sio said the upstate region has an advantage tech hubs in Texas, Ohio, Arizona and others don’t — proximity to dozens of colleges and top-flight universities. In Central New York alone there are nearly 40 colleges and universities within a two-to-three-hour drive.
Colleges: RIT part of U.S.-Japan semiconductor development program
“Even your Austins, your Columbuses of the world don’t have the size and scale and ability to significantly produce talent like we do in upstate New York,” Sio said.
MCC will work with other community colleges to develop mid-level workers for jobs in the semiconductor industry through training programs that are more hands-on than academic.
The college, with campuses in Rochester and Brighton, is already working with other schools on similar initiatives.
“This is an opportunity to leverage those relationships,” said Joseph Stefko, the CEO of ROC2025, which is leading Rochester’s efforts in the consortium.
