The Kimberley region is as remote as one can get. Its landmarks are scattered far and wide, sometimes a few hundred kilometres from the nearest major town. Luckily, the last few decades has seen an overall improvement of access roads around the region, so travelling by four-wheel drive vehicle is a recommended way to get around.

If visitors don’t have their own four-wheel drive, it’s easy to track one down for rent at a car hire agency in Broome , Kununurra or Wyndham . These are the three largest settlements in the region, boasting several reliable car rental facilities. However, it is important that renters talk to the hire company about safety tips prior to heading into this remote corner of Australia. If visitors are not comfortable self-driving, then the next best option would be a Kimberley 4WD tour.

Driving through the Kimberley using a 4WD vehicle is no ordinary trip. Despite the absolute beauty of the region, there are still plenty of dangers that tourists need to be aware of, thanks to its unforgiving climate, vast expanse, and isolation. Remember that most roads are cut-off and closed during the wet season (October to April), and plenty of road signs will make this clear. Always take extra food and water, and motorists should tell someone their expected itinerary or path. Fill up the petrol tank at every opportunity, and drive with caution. Some of the gravel roads may look flat and clear, but their edges can often be soft, and corrugation of the road, especially after the rainy season, can cause severe damage if driven over too fast.

Nevertheless, driving through the Kimberley is an adventure of a lifetime. With a little planning, motorists should have nothing to worry about when driving through. There are two main roads leading into the region, the Great Northern Highway, which is well-maintained, and the gravel-dominated Gibb River Road , which bisects the core of the Kimberley.

Travelling with us, we offer 2 options for families

  • Join a Guided Self Drive Tour
  • Join a Private Tour

1. Join Guided Self Drive Tour

Wunnamurra Gorge Kimberley Australia

Joining a guided self drive tour is a fantastic option, we have multiple departures aligned with July & September school holidays,  and those families with more kids are rewarded, as the more kids you have, the cheaper the per person rate gets.

Your family travels in 4WD which we supply, Dad or Mum drives and the kids sit in the back and play eye spy and never fight 🙂 , it’s a good old fashioned family road trip, except, we organise everything, we give you a capable vehicle, we have private & safe places to camp, we know where to swim without crocs, we buy and cook all the food, we lead you on the hikes and show you secret art spots.

We travel with a convoy of 5 other vehicles and all families camp, swim and do the hikes etc together as one big group. When the time comes to move on to the next thing you jump in the vehicle we’ve provided, with your own kids, your own music, the aircon just how you like it and with heaps of comfort.

These school holiday departures are popular with Aussie families and book out early, to see our departure dates just click through to the tour (button below) and check the calendar.

Our tours are also very popular with our International families who normally have more flexibility with dates, family bookings can be made on any of our departures, again, click through the the tour page and check the calendar.

Please visit the Kimberley Guided Self Drive Adventure page for more details.

Jo Willesee

★★★★★ July 2023

Just back from a 10 day trip with these guys. It was absolutely epic! Without doubt the most magical part of Australia and being able to self drive made the adventure next level. So grateful that I got to do the trip with my kids (8,11,13). We made memories for a lifetime, and loved every minute. Thanks Heath and Angie. You guys rock!

Michael Eva

We did a self drive, 10 day tour of the Kimberley with five families and 14 kids. It exceeded all of our expectations. The guides were phenomenal, deeply knowledgeable and just really lovely people. The food was fresh and delicious and the equipment (including the vehicles) was top notch. We also got a chance to visit some really unique and off the track places that made it feel like we were having a real insiders look at this stunning part of the world. This trip was something that I would love to do again and I could hand on heart recommend it to anyone as a really fun, unique and authentic Kimberley’s experience.

What an amazing time we had on our 10 day self-drive Kimberley adventure! Our guides Heath and Angie were fabulous, highly knowledgeable with boundless energy and enthusiasm. Driving our own 4WD vehicle made the experience feel genuine, challenging and so so much fun!! The trip of a lifetime, would highly recommend!!

What does Bluey mean?

Pronounced Blue’ē, it means the collection of possessions carried by a person travelling in the Outback.

Australian Dictionary in 1899: “There’s the everlasting swaggie with a bluey on his back who is striking out for sunset on the never-never track”.

In the early days you needed food & water to travel in the Outback, these days you need a vehicle and the right information. Our business was created to help people who want to travel through the outback independantly (Self Drive). The obvious name for our business was Bluey.

** The word bluey is also used to refer to a person with red hair.

Bryson DeChambeau of the United States celebrates his birdie putt on the 18th hole with a record 58 ... [+] to win the LIV Golf Invitational - Greenbrier (Photo by Eakin Howard/Getty Images)

Professional golf has historically been a pure meritocracy. The players who perform well reap extraordinarily high rewards. Those who don't play well, get nothing and go home two days before tournament ends. Professional golfers have never had guaranteed contracts; they have had to earn every dollar every time they tee it up.

LIV Golf changed that model by signing guaranteed contracts with many of the world's top golfers. Unlike other professional golfers, LIV Tour members not only play for large purses at the events they participate in but are also guaranteed to earn their contracted money, regardless of their performance in any tournament.

The natural criticism from many golf fans was whether LIV golfers would be as motivated and try as hard as golfers in other leagues that don't provide contracts. Are they putting in the same degree of effort as they would have had they not had guaranteed money? Many fans believe that the older model brought out the best performance from players, and the new model would not motivate players to try as hard and would result in slacking.

I wanted to understand the dynamics of contracts and their relationship to performance. Most professional sports leagues have contracted players. Many studies across various sports, like basketball, soccer, and baseball, have looked at player performance before and after signing a large contract, and their results are mixed, but in general, athletic performance increases when monetary incentives increase. However, financial incentives do not affect an athlete's intrinsic motivation or self-belief. In other words, athletes will try harder when the stakes are higher, but the money at stake does not impact their desire to win. Athletes, especially at an elite level, all want to win.

Like their peers on other tours, LIV golfers are professional athletes conditioned to win at every stage of their lives. At an elite level in any profession, the size of an individual's bank balance has no bearing on their desire to succeed. If that were the case, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, or any of the most exceptional achievers in the world would have long stopped trying hard to continue succeeding. Becoming and staying the best in the world is driven by intrinsic motivation, not external rewards.

Being Part Of A Team Enhances Performance:

Beyond the impact of the guaranteed contract, other factors influence how hard LIV golfers try each time they tee it up. One factor that impacts an individual's performance is being part of a team. LIV Golf introduced the concept of team golf, a traditionally individual sport. The team golf concept is simple. In addition to players competing individually, they are also vying for a team win, where the sum of the scores of four team members determines the team champions.

Team golf is like a relay in running or swimming, where a player competes individually, but the team result aggregates individual performances. Studies have shown that when athletes are part of a team, they push themselves harder and perform better than they do as individuals.

Being part of a team raises the motivation and output of players. Like the rest of us, elite athletes push themselves harder when accountable to teammates. They grind a little bit more, and their level of performance increases. This phenomenon, the Kohler Effect, has been observed across sports like swimming and track and field relays, where swimmers and runners with lesser abilities show substantial increases in motivation when participating in relays relative to their participation in individual events.

All the evidence points to the fact that LIV golfers have higher intrinsic motivation, task enjoyment, greater perseverance, and higher performance levels simply by being part of a team. The players feel more motivated when they are part of a team and want to try harder and do better because they are playing for something larger than themselves. Even when out of contention individually, they keep trying to support their team members. This human trait is true in every profession, and golf is no exception.

An elite athlete's performance is based on their innate talent, preparation for an event, and their self-belief, desire, and motivation to win. These factors do not change for any athlete or any sport. And while professional golfers may at times overperform or underperform relative to their abilities, their tour affiliation has no bearing on any factors that drive performance.
