Supercharging Digital Transformation for Travel Agencies and Professionals

RateHawk + Skift

RateHawk + Skift

December 20th, 2023 at 10:00 AM EST

For travel agencies to navigate the next evolution of business-to-business travel booking, they need a forward-thinking technology partner that knows how to balance digital innovation with human expertise — especially in an industry known for its resistance to change.

This sponsored content was created in collaboration with a Skift partner.

The travel industry has been in recovery mode for the past few years, with overall global performance finally returning to 2019 levels in 2023 . Driven by a global wave of digital adoption, the online travel sector is growing even more quickly — according to Skift Research , online bookings will reach $666 billion by 2024, 26 percent above 2019 levels.

Although the worst days of the Covid-19 pandemic may be over, several challenges remain — including lingering supply chain issues, erratic fluctuations in demand, economic uncertainty, and new expectations around flexibility and safety. For the online travel sector, fragmented distribution is another persistent challenge, especially in Europe, where the underlying hotel supply is much less branded than in the U.S.

“To thrive in this unpredictable environment, travel agencies and travel management companies (TMCs) need to rethink their operations, reinvent their approach to digital transformation, and stay abreast of shifts in customer preferences, emerging destinations, and changes in industry regulations,” said Felix Shpilman, CEO of Emerging Travel Group, a Dubai-based company that has developed into a major global incremental distribution channel for hotels and chains.

Launched in 2010, Emerging Travel sources inventory to its own platforms — a collection of brands tailored to different audiences, including business-to-consumer users, travel professionals, and corporate travelers — as well as to other companies through API connections. Built for a business-to-business audience, its RateHawk brand is known for its robust technology platform that serves travel agencies and TMCs with user-friendly booking tools.

SkiftX spoke with Shpilman about the challenges facing travel agencies and professionals, the importance of balancing automation with the human touch, and how RateHawk differentiates itself through intuitive user-experience (UX) and user-interface (UI) design, combined with an extensive inventory of accommodations from numerous suppliers.

Navigating the Complexities of Today’s Booking Landscape

While the specific needs of leisure and business travel agencies, TMCs, and travel professionals looking for API booking solutions may be different, “they all earn a living through selling travel and deriving income from booking fees or commissions,” Shpilman said. “They need to continue surfacing relevant booking options with their customers in order to maintain profit margins.”

Surfacing relevant booking options with customers means managing constant fluctuations in pricing, promotions, and availability with real-time updates and synchronization across platforms. The evolving nature of travel preferences and the need for personalized experiences add to this complexity. The core challenge is that agents earn a modest percentage of the massive profits generated by the travel industry — and even before the disruptions caused by the pandemic, leisure travel agencies faced intense competition from business-to-consumer services that focused on discounting.

“Agents cannot compete with business-to-consumer services because of how the structure of the market works at face value,” Shpilman said. “The oligopolistic structure of airline companies further limits agents’ margins, particularly in the business travel segment. On the other hand, no business-to-consumer service has successfully replaced the role of leisure travel agents worldwide.”

This hyper-competitive landscape, coupled with the high cost of travel purchases, poses an enduring obstacle, but agencies should remember that customers will book wherever it’s most profitable and wherever they get the best service. Agencies can level up and provide outstanding service if they have the right digital tools in place.

How Technology Empowers Travel Agents and Professionals

Balancing human-to-human interaction with scaled-up technology services is a delicate act and a common problem across sectors today. In the travel industry, the human touch provided by travel agents remains indispensable, particularly in offering personalized assistance to clients.

There are concerns that a tech-first experience may remove the personal interaction that makes travel special — however, advanced technology can actually enhance the human touch. For example, generative artificial intelligence (AI) can concisely summarize conversations to reduce the time agents and managers spend taking and reviewing notes or sharing context when transferring contacts.

In other words, to paraphrase the sentiment expressed at Skift Global Forum in September , we’re not going to be replaced by AI — we’re going to be replaced by people who know how to use AI. Technology can evolve the role of travel agents, helping them compete with business-to-consumer services and freeing them up to make better and faster decisions.

“I don’t see a world where technology completely replaces the expertise of human travel agents,” Shpilman said. “Automated solutions powered by AI and machine learning will continue to improve, but AI will serve as a co-pilot, helping travelers book more easily and assisting agents to make better proposals. It’s a co-pilot on both sides of the transaction.”

Shpilman’s vision of a future where technology complements — rather than replaces — the expertise of travel agents aligns with the platform’s commitment to building functional and easy-to-use products for travel professionals.

“When we started building our business-to-business products in 2014, most travel agencies were still using text-based global distribution systems (GDS) to make travel bookings,” Shpilman said. “We saw a huge opportunity to reinvent the user interface and add the modern functionality agents need, so we applied our business-to-consumer knowledge toward improving the design and coupled it with an extensive inventory of accommodations from 220 active, optimized supplier connections. Combining this incredible under-the-hood tech with a beautiful platform interface is where RateHawk’s magic comes from.”

The RateHawk platform includes many innovative features that help travel agents conduct business more efficiently, including a Selection Tool designed to enhance service quality and client engagement by simplifying hotel selection and offering customizable templates, seamless booking processes, and branding options. Another feature, pay-by-link , allows agents to process payments directly with clients’ cards or via remote payment links, simplifying transactions and enabling business in various environments.

“These products are in high demand among travel agents, and we are constantly iterating and developing new tools to meet their needs,” Shpilman said.

RateHawk’s Rebranding Strategy and Future Outlook

Product innovation and differentiation, combined with overwhelming scale, can be a winning formula for success in the online travel sector. At World Travel Market in November, RateHawk announced a major rebranding initiative that encompasses an updated corporate identity, strategic reimagining, and the unveiling of a new logo.

“When RateHawk began as a startup, we lacked the budget and clarity to define our role in the business-to-business booking ecosystem,” Shpilman said. “Now, as we scale into new markets, this rebranding reflects how we see travel agents as unsung superheroes, overcoming challenges, navigating change, and exceeding expectations. We see ourselves as the agent’s friend and partner, and we wanted to communicate that more clearly.”

Looking ahead to an even more hyper-digitized and automated world, Shpilman believes travel will continue to be an expensive and complex purchase that requires human expertise and that there will always be a need for building functional tools that accommodate travel agents’ evolving needs.

“The travel tech sector is booming, but it hasn’t always been viewed as particularly glamorous,” Shpilman said. “But the development of digital technologies is reshaping the industry and making it more appealing. I love that I get to interview and hire a lot of young people around the world and get them excited about this dynamic industry — because we’re living in an immensely exciting time.”

A SpaceSaver Vacuum Storage Bag with clothing in it.

SpaceSaver Vacuum Storage Bags

Our vacuum-sealed storage-bag pick.

We love these vacuum-sealed bags for neatly packing away seasonal clothes and bedding. They shrank down significantly faster and looked flatter than other options we tested, and they held their seal even after repeated use.

Buying Options

You save $5 (20%)

Other things to know: We generally prefer plastic bins or blanket bags for storing clothes and bedding, but vacuum bags are a decent option if storage space is tight. Deal is for 10 medium storage bags with a travel pump.

Someone using a Bissell Little Green Portable Carpet Cleaner 3369.

A nearly identical variant of our top-pick portable carpet cleaner

A favorite among neat freaks and casual cleaners alike, this Walmart-exclusive version of our longtime favorite portable carpet and upholstery cleaner gets the job done. It’s a game changer for small messes, particularly if you have pets or young kids.

You save $21 (19%)

Other things to know: Negligible differences between this model and our pick, primarily a different color. Completely removed wine and chocolate stains with its handheld suction brush, hot tap water, and cleaning formula. Designed to tackle small areas only. Water tank is difficult to clean. One-year warranty is shorter than that of the competition.

A Roborock Q5+ Robot Vacuum.

Roborock Q5+

The best self-emptying robot vacuum.

Better mapping, easier app navigation, a longer battery life, and more-reliable voice commands are just some of the attributes that give this super-smart robot vacuum an edge over its competition. It excels on hard floors and low- and medium-pile carpets, making spring cleaning a breeze.

Use promo code ROBOROCKS

Use promo code SPRINGSAVE20

Other things to know: Comes with a charging station that empties debris into a disposable bag. Struggles with debris near thresholds and baseboards, like nearly all models we tested. Compatible with Siri, Alexa, and Google Home. Use code ROBOROCKS to buy new directly from Roborock. Use code SPRINGSAVE20 to buy a certified manufacturer-refurbished model from eBay, which includes a two-year Allstate warranty.

The Ego ST1511T Power+ 15″ Powerload String Trimmer.

The best string trimmer

You save $40 (18%)

Other things to know: The charger can deliver a full battery in about 40 minutes. The deal from Lowe’s includes a free extra battery that’s helpful for larger lawns or use as a backup.

An Ego LM2135SP Power+ 21″ Select Cut Lawn Mower.

Ego LM2135SP Power+ 21″ Select Cut Mower

Our runner-up for the best lawn mower.

Forgo the noise, emissions, and maintenance of a typical gas mower. This battery-powered, self-propelled mower is considerably quieter than its gas counterparts, and it can run for about an hour on a single charge.

You save $150 (20%)

With store pickup - includes bonus battery

Other things to know: Minimal maintenance compared with gas models. A little less powerful and has a shorter runtime than our top pick, but a fine trade-off for the lower price if you don ’ t have a huge lawn. First deal we ’ ve seen since Black Friday.

The Betrayal at House on the Hill Board Game (3rd Edition).

Betrayal at House on the Hill

One of our favorite horror-themed board games.

If H.P. Lovecraft wrote an episode of “Scooby-Doo” and turned it into a tabletop game, it would be this campy board game. Not much strategy is involved, but it’s easy to get invested in the goofy goings-on, making it a perfect rainy day activity.

You save $9 (25%)

Other things to know: Accommodates three to nine players. Games run about 60 minutes long. Recommended for ages 12 and up. First big drop in price we’ve seen in nearly a year.

Someone wearing a Bonobos Soft Everyday Tee.

Bonobos Soft Everyday Tee

Our boxier, more relaxed white t-shirt pick.

Swap out your bulky winter sweaters in favor of something lighter—namely, these extremely soft 100% cotton tees. Their quality, fit, and comfort make them a hit among our staff, especially our plus-size testers.

Add 2 to cart

Other things to know: Generous fit may not work for people with smaller frames. Available in a variety of colors and sizes. Choose between crew neck or V-neck and slim or standard cut. Add two shirts to your cart to get the deal price; discount applies automatically.

Two pairs of L.L.Bean Bean Boots.

L.L.Bean Women’s Bean Boots (8-inch)

Our duck-boot pick for mixed terrain (women's sizes).

Half rain boot, half traditional boot, these are the de-facto stylish boots for those April showers. Their comfort, durability, and versatility make them among the most thoughtfully designed pieces of outdoor gear we’ve tried.

L.L.Bean Men’s Bean Boots (8-inch)

Our duck-boot pick for mixed terrain (men’s sizes).

Deftly balancing fashion and function, these duck boots are great for wet and muddy weather. They’re laced tighter to the foot than rubber boots, so they don’t slip on and off as easily as others, but they’re some of the most thoughtfully designed pieces of outdoor gear we’ve tried.

Other things to know: We like that these boots are unlined since it keeps the shoe true to its nature as a multi-seasonal, versatile piece of your outdoor kit. The leather upper and the coated laces require some breaking in.

Cant send message

Got an email from them claiming I had requested to cancel my flight, when I did no such thing. The emails says you can’t reply to the email, but you can send a message via the app, but there is no option in this app. I assume they are playing games bc my flight was cancelled due to Covid, I was able to reschedule the flight directly w the airline and did so. Now they’re probably trying to get their money back, but since my rescheduled flight is next month I’m worried this incompetent shady company is going to end up cancelling my new flights. Anyway it reinforces the fact you should always book direct w the airline, saving a few dollars is not worth it when you have zero help when something like this happens.

  • Don't treat it like a vacation - find a balance between work and fun to avoid running out of money while on the road.
  • Know when to unplug - set boundaries with clients and make time for exploration and enjoyment of the local culture.

With so many different types of digital nomad jobs out there, working from paradise is easier than ever before. Anyone who has ever dreamed of cracking open the laptop on the beach and taking in a lovely sunset after several hours of work will rejoice at all the options. 10 Choose The Home Base Wisely

Beach In The Phi Phi Islands, Phuket, Thailand

When wondering how to work and travel, the first question is where to set up a base. Choosing a great home base can make all the difference when it comes to being a successful digital nomad.

Pick somewhere with good infrastructure, a thriving community, and great internet, all to be enjoyed without a lot of interruptions. As an added bonus, many of the best countries to enjoy a digital nomad life happen to be in some of the most beautiful corners of the world.

  • Top Tip: Think about the climate one wants to live in and make a short list from there

9 Don't Treat It Like A Vacation

Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica

The biggest Achilles heel among the problems digital nomads face is falling into the trap of treating their life as an ongoing vacation. Just because one works from the beach doesn't mean every day should be a sun-soaked hedonistic festival.

Instead, make sure to put in the time to do the actual work of being a digital nomad. Running out of cash on the road is no fun, so find that balance.

  • Top Tip: Have set work hours to stick with regularly for a sense of routine

8 Know When to Unplug

Bahia Honda State Park in Calusa Beach

While one should certainly make sure to work hard while living the digital nomad life, it's important to unplug sometimes, too. Resist the urge to stay completely connected to the outside world and make some time for fun.

Balancing days of hustling with time exploring one's adopted country of choice is the number one thing that makes this lifestyle so appealing.

  • Top Tip: Set boundaries with clients, like not checking email after 9 p.m. or on weekends

7 Consider Teaching

Two people learning and studying together in a classroom

Consider teaching if one plans to stay in a single spot for a while. There are plenty of countries where people can teach English and travel ; however, to follow this path, one should invest in a TESOL or TEFL to learn the basics of teaching English overseas.

One can also teach online to get a little extra income.

  • Top Tip: Although teaching might be fun and profitable, it's important to treat it like the important job it is

6 Find A Coworking Space

Cafe in Santiago de Compostela

When working and traveling as a digital nomad, finding a great coworking space or café to work from can help keep one motivated and even connect with a community of fellow digital nomads.

Plus, coworking spaces tend to have super-fast Wi-Fi, and one can sometimes cash in on fun complimentary amenities like free coffee and tea.

  • Top Tip: If staying for a while, check on monthly rates to save cash

5 Make Local Friends

A group of friends taking a selfie at a scenic spot

One of the top ways to integrate oneself into a new community is to make local friends. Resist the urge to stick with expat circles and branch out.

Join language clubs and jump on Facebook groups where expats and locals mingle. One can make some cherished friends and really start to understand the local community.

  • Top Tip: Internations is an excellent place to meet people when traveling the world

4 Stay Connected

A digital nomad with a laptop sitting on a rocky beach at night with the moon and a starry sky

One of the biggest headaches digital nomads experience is being on a strict deadline and needing a way to connect with the world.

Having a solid internet connection at one's apartment and favorite coworking spaces is one vital way to stay on track. However, having a mobile hotspot can work wonders, too, especially in more rural regions.

  • Top Tip: Get a local SIM card with a hotspot

3 Learn The Local Language

Two People Seated On A Chair Next To An RV

Even if one travels or lives in an area where most people speak English, learning some of the local language can work wonders when traveling as a digital nomad.

It can give one a little bit of extra credibility, and it's respectful and kind to communicate with people in their native language.

  • Top Tip: Start learning the language before arriving for a head start

2 Have An Emergency Stash Of Cash

Closeup of Euro paper bills and credit cards

Having an emergency stash of cash when traveling as a digital nomad is a smart way to deal with unexpected emergencies and also be able to get home to see the family if need be.

Everyone's personal comfort level will differ, so it's good to work out what works best prior to traveling.

  • Top Tip: Have at least as much cash as needed for an emergency plane ticket home

1 Make Sure The Passport Is Up-To-Date

United States Passports on top of an American Flag

One's passport is the ultimate key to seamless travel. Nowadays, it's easier than ever for Americans to renew their passports online , so there's no reason not to keep it up to date.

Plus, some countries require one to get a visa in advance, so keeping on top of the regulations is an intelligent play for smooth travel. Some countries also require remote workers to get a digital nomad visa beforehand.

  • Top Tip: Know where the embassy is in case of emergency

There are many countries that offer long-term visas to digital nomads . Plus, some countries in Europe offer digital nomad visas for remote workers on the continent. Alternatively, for those seeking sun, sand, and sea, remote workers can enjoy any of the numerous Caribbean destinations that offer digital nomad visas .

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

I spend £8,500 a year to live on a train

author image

Lasse travels 600 miles a day throughout Germany aboard Deutsche Bahn trains. He travels first class, sleeps on night trains, has breakfast in DB lounges and takes showers in public swimming pools and leisure centres, all using his unlimited annual railcard.

Uch . TRAINS. They’re a necessary evil in many of our lives. Horrible big tin cans full of smelly people that never turn up on time and make you late for everything. The less time spent on them the better. At least for most of us in the UK, anyway.

Not so for digital nomad Lasse Stolley. This German teenager can’t get enough of them. He’s not a trainspotter, though. He’s more of a train squatter .

Okay, ‘squatter’ isn’t really accurate. While the 17-year-old does indeed live on trains, he does so entirely legally. And with a surprising amount of comfort.

Lasse travels 600 miles a day throughout Germany aboard Deutsche Bahn trains. He travels first class, sleeps on night trains, has breakfast in DB lounges and takes showers in public swimming pools and leisure centres, all using his unlimited annual railcard.

The self-employed coder technically has no fixed abode and appears to really enjoy his unusual way of life, something which he chronicles regularly on his blog, Life on the Train .

Lasse travels 600 miles a day throughout Germany aboard Deutsche Bahn trains. He travels first class, sleeps on night trains, has breakfast in DB lounges and takes showers in public swimming pools and leisure centres, all using his unlimited annual railcard.

Embarking on an unusual journey

‘I’ve been living on the train as a digital nomad for a year and a half now,’ Lasse told Business Insider recently. ‘At night I sleep on the moving Intercity Express (ICE) train and during the day I sit in a seat, at a table and work as a programmer, surrounded by many other commuters and passengers. I travel from one end of the country to the other. I’m exploring the whole of Germany.’

‘I decided to live on a train when I was 16 years old. My school days were behind me and the whole world was open to me. So in the summer of 2022, I decided to give in to my wanderlust, leave my parents’ house in Schleswig-Holstein behind and embark on a huge adventure.’

‘If I feel like travelling to the sea, I take the train north in the morning. If I long for the hustle and bustle of the big city, then I look for a connection to Berlin or Munich. Or I take the express train to the Alps for a hiking trip.’

‘I use the app to organise the next connection in the evening and sleep while I race along the tracks towards my destination. I don’t have a place to retreat to. My home is the train.’

‘The early months were tough and I had to learn a lot about how it all worked. Everything was different than how I’d imagined.’

Lasse travels 600 miles a day throughout Germany aboard Deutsche Bahn trains. He travels first class, sleeps on night trains, has breakfast in DB lounges and takes showers in public swimming pools and leisure centres, all using his unlimited annual railcard.

Costs, overnights and The Parent Question

Lasse says that, all things considered, it costs him around €10,000 (£8,500) a year to live the way he does.

‘I have a lot of freedom and can decide every day where I want to go, whether it’s to the Alps, to a big city or to the sea. I’m completely flexible.’

He’s forced to keep on the ball, though. You know how it is with trains. Even the unsurprisingly much more efficient German rail system. ‘Every night I have to make sure that I catch the night train and sometimes I have to reschedule very quickly because it suddenly doesn’t arrive.’

What do Lasse’s mum and dad think of his decision? ‘I had to do a lot of convincing,’ he says. Once he’d done that convincing, his parents checked out the legal side of it and agreed. They helped him sell off the majority of his possessions and now fully back their son’s decision.

Lasse travels 600 miles a day throughout Germany aboard Deutsche Bahn trains. He travels first class, sleeps on night trains, has breakfast in DB lounges and takes showers in public swimming pools and leisure centres, all using his unlimited annual railcard.

Keeping luggage to a minimum

Luggage is, obviously, something of an issue. Lasse has to travel light.

‘The most important thing is my laptop and my noise-cancelling headphones, which at least give me a little privacy on the train.’

‘An important aspect of minimalism on the train is the reduction of material possessions,’ Lasse says. ‘Since the available space is very limited, you have to choose carefully what you really need. It means getting rid of unnecessary items and limiting yourself to the bare essentials.’

‘The challenge of not accumulating more and more things is a central component of minimalist living. Especially with a backpack, you quickly reach a space limit.’

Reflecting on an hectic 18 months

‘This life means a pretty restless existence. To switch off, I just look out the window and watching the scenery. That calms me down a lot. Then I just let my thoughts wander.’

‘My favourite route leads through the Middle Rhine Valley between Mainz and Bonn. Here the trains always travel very slowly along the river. It’s a beautifully picturesque route that stretches at the foot of the vineyards. The view outside is wonderful.’

‘I’ve travelled a total of over 500,000 kilometres (310,000 miles) since I started living on the train. I don’t know how much longer I want to travel through Germany and wake up somewhere different every day, though.’

‘My Bahncard 100 is still valid for six months. I haven’t seen enough yet.’

What you need to know about US vaccine proof on your phone

How and where you may need to show digital vaccine proof—and what the bigger picture looks like for covid credentials and apps.

  • Harini Barath archive page

vaccine credetialing concept

We’re keeping track of the covid vaccine apps rolling out in the US and some of the ways people can now prove they’re vaccinated. But there’s a lot of conflicting and confusing information, and a lot of developers are vying to provide the go-to solution. Here, we’ve gathered answers to some common questions.

What’s a digital vaccine credential? Is it the same as a vaccine passport?

Digital vaccine credentials are a way to show you’ve been vaccinated against covid by using an app on your phone (instead of a paper record). States have a wide variety of policies and plans related to these kinds of credentials, which are also sometimes known as vaccine passports .

Some states have their own apps for times that vaccine proof is needed, such as New York’s Excelsior Pass, New Jersey’s Docket, and myColorado. Louisiana’s LA Wallet app, which also holds a driver’s license, can store a covid credential. How states link digital credentials with immunization records may vary. For example, California texts a QR code to vaccinated individuals who fill out a form to verify their identity. Some states and territories have partnered with MyIRMobile , including Arizona, DC, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Dakota, Washington, and West Virginia. Governors and lawmakers in some states—for example, Alabama, Florida, Montana, and Texas—are actively opposed to requiring vaccine proof.

To find out where each state stands on mandating vaccine credentials and providing means for digitizing them, check out Tech Review’s guide to covid vaccine apps in the US .

Why would I want an app on my phone for vaccine proof?

Some experts have pointed out that vaccine proof on a phone isn’t as reliable as the tried-and-true paper card from the CDC. That may be, but it’s a good alternative or supplement to carrying a vaccine card everywhere. Digital proof doesn’t necessarily mean installing a new app: A photo or scan of the paper card stored on the phone will do for some venues. The latest version of Apple’s Health app, for iOS 15, will be able to store health records—including covid vaccination proof.

Be aware that although apps can be a convenient way to store information about vaccine status, experts warn of potential risks to data privacy as this technology is relatively new and being rolled out quickly.

Getting around town

Do I need to show vaccine proof in my everyday life—for example, if I want to eat indoors at a restaurant?

Most cities and towns in the US do not have vaccine requirements for indoor dining. New York City was the first to announce mandates, and it’s still one of the few to do so. It requires proof of at least one dose of vaccination for entry into restaurants, gyms, and other indoor entertainment spaces like theaters, museums, and more. San Francisco and New Orleans followed suit, with the former taking a tougher stance and requiring patrons to be fully vaccinated. Similar mandates are planned for Los Angeles and the Seattle region in October.

Some individual restaurants now require patrons to show proof of vaccination. To find out if you have to carry your vaccine proof to dinner, check to see if the restaurant is on OpenTable’s map or check with the venue.

Are businesses legally allowed to require vaccine proof for entry?

Yes. Restaurants, gyms, theatres, and some other types of businesses in cities like New York and Los Angeles want to ensure their patrons are vaccinated. While this hasn’t become common practice outside some major cities, private businesses can legally ask for proof of vaccination before providing service.

Can businesses ask their employees for vaccine proof? What about schools?

It’s legal for businesses and governments to require employees to be vaccinated, as long as they allow exemptions for medical or religious reasons. Many companies already require workers to get vaccinated, and others are following suit.

While teachers and staff in many school districts have been required to get vaccinated, the rule has not extended to students in most areas. Los Angeles is the first major school district to mandate covid vaccines for students ages 12 and older who are attending class in person. Covid vaccines for children under 16 have not received full FDA approval yet. When the approvals come through, more states or school districts may include the covid vaccine on their lists of required immunizations. An increasing number of colleges and universities require vaccination .

Do I have to show vaccine proof for air travel within the US?

Vaccination is recommended by the CDC , but is not mandatory, for travel within the US, and airlines are accepting several apps that allow travelers to show proof.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) launched the IATA Travel Pass , a mobile app for storing and managing verified certifications for covid tests or vaccines. It’s partnering with over 40 airlines, including British Airways, Air France, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic. Another app, VeriFLY , is accepted by American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and others for travel from the US to other destinations. Clear Health Pass can display a scan of a paper CDC card, as well as vaccine credentials from several states, including Hawaii—which has strict rules for vaccinated travelers (and even more rules for the unvaccinated, including a 10-day quarantine). Hawaii also accepts records through the CommonPass system or its own app, and has an online portal with detailed instructions .

"We have [vaccine proof] in our phone, we have a picture of it, we've got duplicates in the file cabinet—because this has become your path to entry." -Nicol Turner Lee

If you’re thinking about international travel, CNN Travel has a list of countries where US passport holders are welcome .

The bigger picture

We asked Nicol Turner Lee, director of the Center for Technology Innovation and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, about the prospects for vaccine credentials going forward. She says people are understandably confused and a little frantic right now: “We have [vaccine proof] in our phone, we have a picture of it, we’ve got duplicates in the file cabinet—because this has become your path to entry.”

Turner Lee stresses that many people can’t easily comply when new digital hurdles pop up. She cites a recent trip she took to Hawaii, where, upon landing, “you had to show your phone and your QR code to get a wristband... and it was so surreal. As we see these passports become more ubiquitously used, we see more public institutions and private establishments that can potentially deny your admission.”

That, she says, could have big implications for basic fairness. “We need to be gathering data on what this means for people who lack access to digital resources,” she says. At the same time, we can’t necessarily eliminate this technology altogether: “We’re stuck. We need to do it because of the health consequences.”

I'm backpacking the world while working as an online therapist. I have a steady income, but I'm exhausted.

  • Carolina Villafuerte provides online therapy while traveling the world.
  • She makes it work by committing to early mornings and making sure she always she a steady internet connection.
  • She said that heaving a steady stream of income allows her to travel without a tight budget.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Carolina Villafuerte , 32, a clinical psychologist who has been backpacking since December 2022. The essay has been edited for length and clarity.

I'm the youngest in my family and was used to everyone taking care of me. Leaving my small town in Ecuador at 30 wasn't easy.

But so many reasons compelled me to move. I was inspired by people who had traveled to my hometown to be digital nomads. I also felt that the best jobs in my country were working for the government, and it was hard to land them without connections or bribes.

Before I moved, I became friends with a European couple who had moved to my hometown for a year. They taught me everything I needed to know about building an online presence — how to use hashtags, get followers, and find content people are interested in. I had studied to be a clinical psychologist and I used their advice to build an online therapy business.

When I had a certain number of patients, I left home on a one-way ticket to travel the world.

I left in December 2022 and have since traveled to Spain, the Netherlands, Australia, and most of Southeast Asia.

I have 20 patients and I work 20 hours a week. I also spend some time each week planning and reading journals that my clients send me. I primarily work with people dealing with anxiety, depression, or burnout, and I charge $50 for an hour-long session.

My clients are all Latin American because I find that it's not just about language, but being able to relate to their culture.

There are some limitations to online therapy — I can't work with children or the elderly. Most of my clients are between 24 and 46.

Life of limited flexibility

Since my patients are across the world, I have to work unusual hours. I work three days a week from 4 a.m. until 1 p.m.

I used to end my days at 5 p.m., and stay in one place for several days, which left very little room for exploring. Back then, I didn't know how to set up hotspots or organize my day by working early mornings.

As a digital nomad, I always have something to worry about. I could never be one of those backpackers that say "it doesn't matter if we are sleeping in a tent, it doesn't matter if we don't find a hostel" because I always need the internet.

I travel with a laptop because a phone is not enough to store all my patients' archives. I also bring along two batteries.

I plan all my trips and activities around my calls. My trips get expensive because I book flights last minute. Being from Ecuador, I need visas for most places and there is no guarantee of when those will arrive.

Moving all the time and sleeping in a different place every night is hard, too. You make a lot of friends backpacking but the connections are not deep because you likely won't ever see them again.

I have been backpacking for just over a year, but I feel tired already.

Having a steady income

Because I have a constant stream of income, I'm not dipping into the $10,000 I saved for emergencies. I can also afford to forgo tight budgeting — I eat where I want to eat, and don't always choose the cheapest hostels.

If I feel like my social battery is draining, I book hotels where I can have a room to myself. On my last trip to Vietnam, I was able to give myself a three-week break because I had saved enough.

I'm currently in the Philippines, and am going to Vietnam for a month to slow down before deciding where I go next.

The TravelLink: A worthy companion for file transfers

It makes it easier to move files between devices without a computer.

By Michelle Johnson

Computerworld |

The Memorex  TravelLink  falls into that category of  "gadgets I didn't know I needed" until one showed up for review.  Designed to make it easier to transfer files between USB devices and memory cards without a computer, it's a handy addition to the travel bag, despite a few minor annoyances.

If you're on the road and need to off-load pictures from a digital camera to an external drive, or you're looking to copy a presentation from your flash drive to a colleague's, this transfer device can conveniently do the deed.

The TravelLink's rounded design and pocket size makes it easy to grip and operate. There are two standard USB and one mini-USB ports along the bottom edge. Two card slots along the top edge accept a variety of memory cards.

The face of the device features a four-way button pad, with a power/control button in the middle, which is used to navigate the menu that appears on a four-line LCD screen. The device runs off three AAA batteries.

The Memorex TravelLink In addition to a simple menu for browsing filenames and folders on each connected device, the screen displays a battery indicator and icons showing the type of device connected, such as USB, Compact Flash (CF) and others. The TravelLink will also display the total capacity and amount of used and available storage on a connected device.

An included mini-USB cable connects the TravelLink to a computer, allowing it to function as an 8-in-1 card reader. It accepts CF I and II, Secure Digital, IBM Microdrive, SmartMedia, Multimedia Card, Memory Stick, MS Pro and MS Duo (adapter required) cards.

TravelLink will transfer files between USB flash drives, memory cards, MP3 players, digital cameras that are USB mass storage and Picture Transfer Protocol compatible, external hard drives and most USB mass storage devices. Only two devices can be attached at a time.

If you're hooking up a digital camera, MP3 player or external drive, note that they'll have to have their own power supply to work with the TravelLink.

To transfer files you simply plug in two storage devices, say a Flash drive and a CF card, then select files or folders and hit the transfer command. Transferred files appear in automatically numbered folders (MSync001, MSync002, etc.) to prevent overwriting existing files.

You can transfer, copy and delete individual files and folders or use the “copy all” or “delete all” commands to move everything.

The TravelLink does not support Windows NTFS or Mac OS formats as a USB transfer device. To hook up the TravelLink to a computer for use as a card reader, you would need Windows 98SE (requires a driver download)/ME/2000/XP or Mac OS 9.x or above.

The included Quick Start Guide shows a firmware update switch on the device but offers no other information about that feature. No other manual or CD is bundled with the device and there's no mention on Memorex.com either. Since there's a switch, presumably there could be a firmware update in the TravelLink's future that could add on new functionality.

It's not compatible with the iPod, but I did successfully connect an MP3 player to the TravelLink via the mini-USB port. I transferred a variety of files, from Word documents to JPGs and MP3s in sizes from just a few kilobytes to a couple of megabytes without a hitch.

Thanks to the curved shape, the TravelLink's USB ports are slightly angled, and the mini port separates the standard ports. I was able to attach one slightly bulky Flash drive and a second slimmer stick without it being a tight squeeze.

Some minor annoyances:

  • Even though the TravelLink works with USB 1.1 and 2.0 devices, it will only transfer at 1.1 speed. That's no big deal if you're just moving around a few text documents, but it's a slightly bigger deal if you're primarily juggling larger image and music files.
  • You have to hold the power button down for 6 seconds to turn on the TravelLink. It automatically powers down after 60 seconds of inactivity to conserve battery life, but you can't change that setting. After a while it gets a little tiresome to have to hold down the switch every time you get distracted for a minute.
  • The only icons on the device's keypad are a couple of arrows and a circle on the power button. It would be nice if they'd give us a clue. I hit the wrong button more than once after a bad guess. How about a couple of small icons to indicate the not-so-obvious functions? (For instance, the left-arrow button functions as “Escape,” right arrow is “Enter.”)
  • The LCD is not backlit, making it tough to read in bad lighting situations.
  • Although battery life is rated for two hours, I only got about an hour from three new AAAs. There's no AC adapter, so get a big pack of batteries if you're planning heavy duty use.

All that said, the TravelLink worked as advertised and was handy for moving files between devices. It's strictly a portable transfer gadget, so don't it expect to do fancy things like create folders or open files.

The TravelLink does what it does well, meaning it easily transfers files with nary a computer in sight. If you need to do that sort of thing often, the TravelLink can be a worthy travel companion. A recent check of online pricing showed the TravelLink selling for $55 to $70.

If you're not interested in the card reader functionality, Memorex also makes the TravelSync, which will transfer files between two USB devices. Like the TravelLink, it sports an LCD screen and four-way button pad. An online price check showed it available from various vendors for $37 to $60.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth tech review: an excellent but inconsistent experience

The launch experience stands to benefit from more polish and refinement.

The second part of the long-awaited Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy is finally here. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth releases today, an expansive RPG that is perhaps this year's most significant PS5 console exclusive. We took a quick look at the first few hours in a piece last week , but with all embargo restrictions now removed, now it's time to crack open the full game and see what's under the hood. How does the Unreal Engine 4-powered Rebirth take advantage of PS5 hardware? What are the enhancements over Remake? And are there any unexpected visual follies along the way?

Let's start with what Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth does well and that begins with its excellent cutscenes. These are bombastic, beautifully-directed sequences that provide stunning views of near-CGI level character models in a mix of expository and action scenes. The level of visual quality achieved here is very impressive, and the cinematics are often outstanding. That was true of 2020's Final Fantasy 7 Remake as well - so what's changed? Character designs have been tweaked quite a bit for these sequences, with higher grade - and subtly more realistic - modeling.

Skin is more detailed with better-defined specular highlights, while hair rendering is significantly improved. The card-based hair system is less angular and possesses more fine detail, with less dithering and break-up. There's more obvious light occlusion and self-shadowing, looking shinier than its Remake counterpart. The cutscene lighting has also been improved, often going for cinematic three-point lighting setups that bring the characters into sharper relief against backgrounds. There's effective indirect lighting in these scenes too, with obvious light bounce from reflective surfaces like sand.

Cover image for YouTube video

Though subtle in isolation, these upgrades give the cutscenes a more consistently high-quality appearance. Rebirth's cutscenes are some of the most visually captivating sequences I've seen to date in a video game, with fidelity and animation that easily beat a lot of older CGI, like the Advent Children CG film from 2005. A handful of the game's cutscenes are still presented with offline CGI however, and these do still offer far higher fidelity than the real-time graphics can achieve, with perfect reflections, great indirect lighting, and beautifully flowing cloth and hair. Rebirth's real time sequences aren't particularly close but still look great in their own right.

The game's action combat is another high point. These battles are a flurry of GPU-driven particles and smoothly-animated combat moves. The camera tends to zoom out a bit more than in Remake and we often see somewhat larger fights with bigger and more numerous foes, but beyond that it's broadly similar to the experience we had before. The combat is still a high point, and the default action mode strikes a good balance between reaction-based real-time combat moves and slow-motion tactics.

I think Rebirth very effectively handles its more naturalistic environments as well. The polygonal density and level of ground clutter here is solid - and definitely up to expectations for a current-gen game. There's a lot of nice incidental details in Rebirth's open-world segments, which seem to have been partly enabled by the use of the PS5's primitive shader functionality, as the developers have reported.

Relative to Remake, there's a big boost in the basic fidelity of these more naturalistic environments. Plus - and perhaps more importantly - Remake doesn't actually have any truly open areas, with the map featuring a more tightly constrained scope. These wide-open gameplay spaces are new for Rebirth. On top of that, distant detail is made of real geometry, unlike Remake, which often resorted to 2D art.

Rebirth's cities are also worth commenting on. Rebirth has expansive and dense city environments, with plenty of civilians scurrying about and lots of geometric and texture detail. Remake is quite limited by comparison, again with limited, corridor-like towns and cities that feel a little artificial. Rebirth effectively takes the Final Fantasy 7 Remake formula to work within a more expansive setting, and that's where I think we've seen the most technical progress. The broader scope - plus the improvements to character rendering in cutscenes - are the basic enhancements here.

Unfortunately, there are some areas where Rebirth is just treading water relative to its four-year old predecessor - and quite a few spots where we've actually seen a step back. Environmental lighting tends to be a serious pain point here. To be fair, many environments look perfectly fine - including the game's cities, which can exhibit decent precalculated lighting, and some of the larger open-world spaces, which look fine while relying more heavily on real-time techniques. Some of the interiors can look quite nice as well, at least when judged from a distance.

travel link digital

The problems really emerge when we start examining some of the game's models up close. Complex structures would stand to benefit from improved precalculated lighting to look good, or some kind of real-time traced lighting. Instead, Rebirth presents these areas almost without any lighting detail at all, or with basic non-shadow casting lights. It often doesn't look great, making the environment look like just a bunch of models jammed together. For a big budget current-gen game, Rebirth can look a little baffling at times. High fidelity and consistent lighting is a cornerstone of current-gen tech, and even without ray-traced GI we would expect a better result here.

That becomes especially clear if we take a look back at Remake. Remake's baked lighting wasn't always of the highest fidelity, but it did a pretty good job of simulating global illumination within more constrained spaces, and smaller objects generally looked appropriately grounded and shaded within the world. That's just not the case much of the time in Rebirth, with worse lighting in typical play.

There are other lighting problems too. Rebirth's shadows are generally at a very low resolution. There is a high-res shadow cascade at comically close distances to the player camera during gameplay, and the shadow resolution during cutscenes is generally fine, but most shadows during gameplay have a lot of breakup and aliasing. Final Fantasy 7 Remake had higher-res shadows - especially in its Intergrade iteration, which boosted shadow res somewhat for PS5 consoles and PCs. I'm not one to harp on low-res shadows usually, but the quality difference here is pretty profound. It's hard to believe that lowering shadow resolution to this level is worth it, relative to just using a bit more dynamic res in the image.

final fantasy 7 rebirth screenshot, showing simplistic natural environment lighting

Low resolution textures can also be problematic. Of course, FF7 Remake had a lot of issues with texturing in its PS4 incarnation, but Intergrade on PS5 mostly solved these issues. For Rebirth though, there's a bizarre mixture of low and high resolution assets. Most of the dodgy texture work comes in the Mount Nibelheim ascent in chapter one, which has a lot of textures that need improvement. You will spot the occasional low-res asset from time to time elsewhere, but the game's first stage has the lion's share of texturing issues.

Rebirth also has problems with traversal animations. The environment has a lot of rocky outcroppings and the like for the characters to traverse, and their animations when presented with an obstacle look unconvincing. Expect stilted, jerky jumps, and bizarre looking animation when Cloud or another playable character blasts through an obstacle at full speed. Barrett's climbing animations also look rather physically implausible, though I'm not sure how a one-armed person is supposed to make these leaps.

Finally, there are a couple other things I wanted to touch on. The water generally looks fine from a distance - though the screen-space reflections can be a little annoying as there are no effective cubemap fallbacks. Water in Rebirth isn't really interactive though, with no geometric or even normal-mapped ripples to trail the player. Splashing around kicks up sprites, but the actual water surface remains quite flat-looking.

final fantasy 7 rebirth vs remake intergrade screenshot, with the older game having higher-res shadows

Additionally, there's no animated collision between the player character and foliage. Cloud simply passes through the foliage, with zero apparent reaction from the bushes and leaves. This isn't a big issue necessarily, but the first Rebirth trailer did feature foliage collision, which looked like touch bending. In the final game this is totally absent.

Don't get me wrong - Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a generally good-looking game that can look superb in its best moments. However, the title has some obvious visual flaws, primarily with lighting, that in some cases make it less appealing than its four-year-old predecessor. It's a larger, and often improved visual experience over that game, but these concessions are annoying.

Rebirth offers two visual modes - a graphics mode, which targets 30fps, and a performance mode which targets 60fps. Underlying visual settings appear to be a match here, so you're getting identical shadows, draw distances, and all the rest of it as far as I can tell. Resolution for the performance mode averages at around 1152p, while the graphics mode is usually at or near 4K, with both modes employing dynamic resolution. That's nothing particularly special, but there is a very odd quirk with the performance mode. The game doesn't upscale using a typical bicubic or bilinear method, but instead seems to double the pixels using a nearest neighbour technique or something similar, albeit with a slightly soft final resolve. It's noticeably blocky and still doesn't look much sharper than more conventional scaling methods.

I did try setting the PS5's resolution to 1440p output in the system settings, and the blockiness largely disappeared. It may still be scaling down from that 4K output though, as taking the original 4K output and doing a bilinear scale to 1440p produces a similar enough result. Still, it might be worth considering for those who really can't stand the image resolve in performance mode. Unfortunately, the relatively low resolution in performance mode - likely combined with some low-res post-processing or another visual bugbear - means that Rebirth is a lot softer than Remake when targeting 60fps. I thought Remake looked solid with its 1512p typical resolution in performance mode, but Rebirth really doesn't hold up well on a 4K set with the same visual options and requires improvement.

travel link digital

The graphics mode generally looks clean and sharp on a 4K set, with a crisp appearance in most content, though it can seem just a touch soft at times. I did notice a bit of ghosting as well, but it's otherwise a good image resolve. Again, I do wish camera-based motion blur was added. Per-object blur is enabled at all times, but the lack of camera-based blur makes the graphics mode look unnecessarily choppy. Interestingly, camera-based blur is also absent in cutscenes, which is a change from Remake.

At least the graphics mode does hold a very stable 30fps. It's basically a locked 30fps, with a dropped frame or 16ms frame very occasionally disrupting that 30fps line. I spent most of my time playing in this mode and it does provide a consistent experience, in combat, traversal, and cutscenes alike. The 60fps performance mode is wobblier. It does stick to 60fps a healthy majority of the time, but as the game progresses the frame-rate can drop into the 50-60fps region during GPU-heavy moments, eg screen-filling particular effects in a battle. Elsewhere, the game is typically a close-to-locked 60fps, with just the occasional dropped frame or two in the mix every so often. Nibelheim also exhibited frame-rate issues in my testing.

As an aside, loading performance in Rebirth is very good - just like it was in Intergrade. Typical loads last about five to six seconds here, which is nice if you're fast travelling or hopping around from save to save for some reason. There are no loading screens during the game itself either, except of course for fast travel.

Cover image for YouTube video

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has some impressive visual strengths - but some unfortunate visual lows as well. You get beautiful cutscene sequences and a greatly expanded world, but have to tolerate some questionable lighting, low-res textures, and poor image quality in performance mode. It's a curiously uneven visual experience, which I think is put into stark contrast by the last major Final Fantasy title - last year's Final Fantasy 16.

FF16 had great baked lighting, extremely detailed assets and stunning combat. It essentially "solved" typical shadowmap issues using a novel shadowing technique that allowed for very fine detail and a beautiful variable penumbra effect. Its cutscenes were beautiful as well, showcasing an excellent physically-based materials pipeline and super high fidelity characters. Its environments also had very dense geometric detail. FF16 was one of the very best looking games of last year, and I think on the whole it's quite a bit more visually accomplished than Rebirth.

FF16 was achieved on a custom engine developed around the needs of the title. I wouldn't chalk all of Rebirth's issues to Unreal Engine 4, but this isn't necessarily the best engine for lighting larger environments. I hope Square-Enix will be migrating to more current-gen oriented tech for the final FF7 remake trilogy entry, perhaps Epic's Unreal Engine 5, because the visual outcomes here are more mixed than I would have expected. Tech like Lumen would be hugely transformative here I think, if used appropriately.

So, technically the results just aren't quite up to expectations, even if individual pieces of the game's visual makeup still definitely impress. As a game though, fans of Remake will find a lot to like here. I think its critical acclaim is well-deserved, even if the somewhat intrusive minigames were a little annoying. It does a great job reimagining the middle section of the original title, while expanding the action combat that felt so fresh in Remake. I loved Remake, and while this isn't quite as much to my tastes, it's certainly a very effective sequel. Rebirth is without a doubt worth a playthrough for Final Fantasy fans, but its visual output is more inconsistent than I'd like. It's a good-looking title, just one that arrives with certain key caveats.
