places to visit in blekinge sweden

What does the name of the region mean?

The name Blekinge tells you a lot about what the main importance of the region was and is: the Swedish verb “bleke” is a nautical term that can be translated as “dead calm”. This is a reference to the waters of the Baltic Sea (Blekinge is next to the Baltic Sea).

What is the region's historical importance?

Not much is known about Blekinge before 1000 AD. Some time after 1000 AD, the region was taken over by the Danish and remained part of Denmark for a good 600 years. In 1658, after many raids during the war between Denmark and Sweden, Blekinge finally became a part of Sweden again (and this has not ever changed again). For over three hundred years, Blekinge was also well known because it is the home to Sweden's main naval base.

What is the region known for?

Blekinge is known to be the second-smallest region of Sweden as it only covers around 0.7% of the country's area. Yes, that's not even one whole percent of Sweden, and yes, there is a region that's even smaller. Blekinge can be a quite scenic region, and is sometimes referred to as “The Garden of Sweden”. The location next to the Baltic Sea, and the fact that Blekinge is the home to Sweden's main naval base, also makes this region famous for its connection to the sea and the navy. And even today, you can still see and hear the influence of the Danish occupation as one of the two dialects that is spoken in Blekinge is related to the Danish language.

What are some places you need to visit in Blekinge?

Blekinge can quite easily be explored within a rather short time – which isn't much of a surprise when you look at how small the whole region is. However, you would be mistaken if you thought a region as small as this would not have much to offer. The one place you definitely should not miss is the region's capital Karlskrona.

Karlskrona is the only baroque city in Sweden – so it is definitely a must-see if you are in the region and have even the smallest interest in baroque. Karlskrona is also quite different from other cities you might have visited in the past: after all, how often do you get to see a city that actually consists of over 30 islands? Karlskrona is also the name of the archipelago that lies just outside the city – and to top the attraction of the place, that archipelago is also the Southernmost archipelago in Sweden. The naval museum on one of the islands in Karlskrona city is definitely a must-do. You can even go into one of the submarines to experience first-hand what it is like to move around on a real submarine. It's not an experience you can make every day.

One other thing you might be interested in are the many golfing opportunities that you have in Blekinge. Often the coast of Blekinge is referred to as the golf coast of Sweden – and there are indeed plenty of golf courses in that region.

Apart from golfing and the important city of Karlskrona, the region of Blekinge is mainly about the sea: kayaking, canoeing, exploring the little islands, or simply enjoying a day at the beach!

10 Best Things to Do This Summer in Blekinge

Make the most of your summer in blekinge.

This guide delves into the best things to do this summer in Blekinge. It might be small – it's the second-smallest province in Sweden – but it sure does pack a punch. That's especially true when the Baltic snows melt away and the warmer months get into full flow. That's when the 1,000+ islands of the Blekinge Archipelago burst to life with lush oak woods and wave-sloshed beaches.

Summer is when most visitors come to Blekinge in search of an outdoorsy, laidback life in southern Sweden. These are just a few of the enticing things that could be on your itinerary, from open-water bathing in Scandinavian bathhouses to historic jaunts through handsome Baroque towns. Read on for ideas on how you can make the most of your summer in Blekinge.

What are the best things to do this summer in Blekinge?

Blekinge's biggest island.

places to visit in blekinge sweden

Sturkö is the largest island that fragments into the Baltic Sea from the south coast of Blekinge. It's one of the easiest to travel to, mainly thanks to the main Sturkövägen roadway that comes in south from the E22 – it's less than 20 minutes in the automobile from the town of Karlskrona.

The isle has risen to become a popular hot spot for summertime visitors, thanks to both its accessibility and natural beauty. The local population of 1,500 swells considerably as soon as June hits. Folks come to walk backcountry trails to seek out the ancient Sturkö Runsten stone that was left by the Vikings. Others come to whiz on bikes around the wild Uttorp Naturreservat in the company of grazing cows. There are also beaches and welcoming campgrounds for the whole family.

A taste of Blekinge's rich history

places to visit in blekinge sweden

Trossö is the beating heart and main island of the archipelago town of Karlskrona, the largest and most historic in all of Blekinge. It's super easy to reach because it hosts the big Karlskrona Centralstation – one of the region's main train interchanges – and the terminus of the Österleden expressway.

The area is a part of the greater (and UNESCO-listed) Karlskrona. It's a joy for history buffs to wander. They'll see the only bona fide Baroque city in Sweden in all its glory, with glimpses of the lovely Trefaldighetskyrkan church and the pastel-painted buildings on Stortorget square. There's a bustling naval base on one side of Trossö for military aficionados, while the Blekinge Museum beckons for when those rare summer showers hit.

Where naval history abounds.

places to visit in blekinge sweden

Stumholmen is one of the top pitstops to make in Blekinge if you're interested in the long maritime history of the province. Encompassed by the designated UNESCO World Heritage site of Karlskrona, it's actually an island that juts out directly from the old town area. Simply cross the short Bastionsgatan Bridge to get in.

Head straight to the harbor. It's the jewel in the crown of Stumholmen, where the 1752 Naval Museum beckons with one of the country's most fascinating maritime displays. Or you could check out the big Crown Bakery, which once produced hard bread for Swedish seafarers. Walking around and picnicking is half of the joy in Stumholmen, so the summer's the perfect time for your explorations.

Ronneby Brunn Spa

Making a splash since 1705.

places to visit in blekinge sweden

The Ronneby Brunn Spa has long been one of the most prestigious places in Sweden to go for that hit of R&R. The spa at Ronneby Brunn Hotel sits by the side of its namesake river just to the south of its namesake town, about 30 minutes' drive from Karlskrona down the E22. There, it's been beckoning vacationers for over 300 years.

Built in 1705 and rebuilt again in the 1950s, the resort covers indoor and outdoor recreation neighborhoods. The interior spa facility has whirlpools and 34-degree warm pools. Those spill into an ornamental Japanese garden where bubbling hot tubs give way to a fully-fledged waterpark with slides and lazy rivers. It's ideal for hotter days in the midsummer in south Sweden.

Location: Ronneby Brunn Hotel, Brunnsparken, Ronneby 372 73, Sweden

Take to the freshwater

places to visit in blekinge sweden

Halen, or The Halen as the locals proudly call it, is the largest freshwater lake in the province of Blekinge. You can't miss it, because it measures nearly 4 miles from tip to toe as it dashes through the rolling oak woods to the west of Olofström.

The summer months here are abuzz with life. Folk flock in from the nearby city of Olofström to swim and sunbathe in the Halens Badplats on the eastern banks. Others will launch fishing expeditions – the lake is known for its perch and trout. The Halen is also linked up to a whole medley of other nearby waters and lakes, so it's a fantastic place to explore by canoe or kayak when the sun's shining.

Trollakyrka

Hidden secrets in the woods.

places to visit in blekinge sweden

Trollakyrka is a relatively unknown spot that won't be on many itineraries for Blekinge. It's hidden away in the very heart of the province, a touch north of the E22 from Mörtjuk. Usually, it's just the folk lucky enough to be whizzing by that get tempted to stop and start exploring.

You're looking for an old section of virgin forest filled with moss-caked oak trees and colossal granite boulders that lurch overhead to create big caves. There's parking space on the narrow country lanes that weave into the woods, but you might need to ask a local exactly where to go. That's all part of the adventure though!

A weekend on the lakeside

places to visit in blekinge sweden

The lake at Långasjön is at once easy to reach but indelibly surrounded by nature. You can cruise up the 29 roadway the moment you leave Karlshamn and be here in less than 15 minutes. But the city's a long way in the back mirror, because the terrain changes to leafy beech woodland and swaying pines before a shimmering stretch of water.

A smattering of country huts, hostels and campgrounds make it easy to escape to Långasjön for a couple of nights in the outback. There are kayak rentals and pedalo boats for trips across the water, along with shoreline trails for those who've packed the hiking boots.

Rare sand beaches for summer paddles

places to visit in blekinge sweden

Hällevik is home to some of the best beaches in the whole of Blekinge province. The town pokes out on a headland between Pukavik Bay and Hanö Bay, some 40 minutes' drive southwest from Karlshamn.

It's a part of Blekinge that gets uncharacteristically sandy when it meets the Baltic Sea. That means some soft and shimmering arcs of powder on the coastline. The best beach is probably in Sandviken. It gets busy in the summer but is a fun-filled spot where the waters are shallow enough to paddle. The area also has golf courses and charming hamlets filled with timber-built Scandi cottages.

Karlshamns Kallbadhus

Swim in style.

The Karlshamns Kallbadhus is a typically Scandinavian hit of uber-cool architecture right in the middle of Blekinge's rugged shoreline. You can't miss it – it rises on stilts like something from a sci-fi flick about 20 minutes' walk from the harbor in Karlshamns itself.

Completed in 2015 at the cost of 8 million Swedish krona, the building has won prestigious urban planning awards and accolades from architects all over the world. The space is filled with muted, neutral colors and is at once organic and futuristic, with stark views of the Baltic Sea, along with several functional changing rooms and bathing platforms.

An off-the-beaten track shoreline ready to be explored

Aspan is a charming dash of proper Blekinge coastline on the Baltic. It stretches southwards from the little port town of Ronnebyhamn, so is a real favorite among boaters in the summer months. They come to hoist the sail or purr up the engine and drift in and out of the rocky inlets, bathing and birding as they go.

Aspan itself hosts a family-friendly campground and lots of sheltered bathing spots for the warmer months. To get wilder nature, you can head south, past Byrum. That's where the ancient oak woods take over in the nature reserve, with coastal walking paths wiggling this way and that.

Beautiful, only a dream for me

Monday 26th of August 2019

Hello, I am planning to drive from Söderköping to Kiruna, is there a particular route you would recommend? I would prefer to stay off main roads as much as possible and take 7 to 10 days there and back. Thank you

Alexander Waltner

Hello Angela, That's almost a 16-hour drive, so I highly recommend that you drive along the highway and make detours and overnight somewhere. The small roads will take a very long time to drive, and the highway will have exits to all places of interest. The highway is called E4 and goes along the east coast.

Hello, My wife ( Swedish heritage) and I are planning to visit Sweden next year with our 10 yr. old grandson. Some suggestions for us for a 7-10 day stay?

Hello John, how nice! Is there any particular interest you have? And to what region in Sweden are you planning to visit? I recommend renting a car if you want to see as much as possible.

Is visiting Kiruna/Abisko a good idea in the middle of September when you have only 2 to 3 days starting from Stockholm. Northern lights and Sami Culture would be the draw. I realize seeing the lights requires a stroke of luck but is there even a decent chance that time of year? The travel time seems too much given the limited time available. Thanks

Friday 14th of June 2019

Hello Angelika, You would have to fly to Kiruna because the train takes a long time, so you would lose 2 days if you take the train back and forth. I haven't been there in the middle of September so I'm not actually sure about the Northern Lights. It's probably better if you check with the local tourism information because they will certainly know the odds of seeing it during that time.

But if you book a flight to Kiruna, you will get there quickly and thus can enjoy it making it worthwhile going there for Stockholm only for 2-3 days.

Thank you so much for This informative post. Here you explain everything about Sweden famous places.

HELSINKI — NATO will kick off an exercise on Monday to defend its newly expanded Nordic territory when more than 20,000 soldiers from 13 nations take part in drills lasting nearly two weeks in the northern regions of Finland, Norway and Sweden.

With over 4,000 Finnish soldiers taking part, the Norway-led Nordic Response 2024 represents the NATO newcomer's largest ever participation in a foreign exercise, according to Finland's military.

“For the first time, Finland will participate as a NATO member nation in exercising collective defense of the alliance’s regions,” the Finnish Defense Forces said in a statement.

Finland, which shares a 1,340-kilometer (830-mile) border with Russia, joined NATO in April 2023 in a historic move following decades of military non-alignment. With its bid now ratified by all NATO members, neighboring Sweden is currently finalizing formalities to enter the military alliance as its 32nd member — most likely in March.

Both Sweden and Finland had developed strong ties with NATO after the end of the Cold War, but public opinion remained firmly against full membership until Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Nonalignment was seen as the best way to avoid tensions with Russia, their powerful neighbor in the Baltic Sea region. But the Russian aggression caused a dramatic shift in public opinion in both countries, and they applied jointly for NATO membership in May 2022.

For years, the biannual NATO drill, which has been conducted in the Arctic extremes of northern Norway, was called “Cold Response.”

However, “thanks to the NATO expansion with Finland and eventually Sweden, we are now expanding the exercise to a Nordic Response,” the Norwegian Armed Forces said on its website. This year, the drill is hosted equally by Finland, Norway and Sweden.

The participating nations in the exercise that runs through March 15 are Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United States.

Roughly half of the participating troops will drill on land. The rest will train at sea, with over 50 participating submarines, frigates, corvettes, aircraft carriers, and various amphibious vessels, and in the air with more than 100 fighter jets, transport aircraft, maritime surveillance aircraft and helicopters, according to the Norwegian military.

The combined joint training will focus on the defense and protection of the Nordic region, Norwegian military officials said.

“We need to be able to fight back and stop anyone who tries to challenge our borders, values and democracy,” said Brigadier Tron Strand from the Royal Norwegian Air Force, Commander of the Norwegian Air Operations Center, in a statement. “With the current security situation in Europe, the exercise is extremely relevant and more important than ever before,” he added.

“The High North represents an important and strategically located area for NATO” and the Nordic Response 2024 exercise “increases Nordic preparedness and the capability to conduct large-scale joint operations in challenging weather and climate," NATO said on its website.

Finland’s new president, Alexander Stubb, will inspect the drill together with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in northern Norway on March 7. It’s the first foreign trip for Stubb since he was sworn in as Finland’s new head of state and its supreme military commander on March 1.
