.st0{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;} I now have first-hand experience of how the coffee is impacted by who is growing it – how the plants and the land are cared for, and how it's processed. It really struck me how much every person we met was invested in the quality of the coffee and what impact that has at our end in our mission to serve delicious and high-quality products! This trip was truly life–changing! Jess, Grand Central Bakery
.st0{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;} I have been fortunate enough to be able to travel to many countries in my life. I can say unequivocally that this trip was the most profound and life-altering experience that you can only capture when you are immersed completely in another culture and country. More tour information:

This is a walking tour that takes you out into the coffee orchards.  Ground is uneven in some places, so we recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes. There are stairs up to the coffee processing area and drying deck. If you're comfortable with a moderately easy hike with a slight uphill grade, you'll be fine for this tour.

Long pants and sun protection is recommended. Weather is always a wildcard on the farm, so it's also good to have a rain jacket on hand, just in case.

If you prefer to stay inside, you can relax in the farmhouse or on the lanai with a nice cup of Kona coffee while your group walks the farm. (Kids 16 and under are free with a paying adult.)

Steve and Joanie were great hosts. The tour was fun and very informative -from how they decided to start their business through all the steps in growing and harvesting up to the delicious samples - and the coffee was the best I've had! Loved the sampling of the various coffees and chocolate at the end. Make sure to have Tickles join you on your tour for added enjoyment So glad we went!

Awesome! So glad you enjoyed visiting our farm.

An amazing way to experience how Kona coffee is made - from bean to brew! Steve and Joanie were perfect hosts, sharing the opportunity to learn about their property, how they maintain it, and how they run their company. Inspiring and entertaining, especially with some homemade banana bread. My friends and family loved the coffee and chocolate that I brought back, too!

What to Expect on a Coffee Tour

Try a sip of real estate-grown 100% Kona coffee, and you might just have to visit the farm for yourself. Fortunately, several coffee farms on Kona provide tours and tastings, including Buddha’s Cup (one of the highest-rated coffees and tours on the island). Coffee tours are a must-do on your Hawaii vacation. Here’s what to expect on a coffee tour in Kona:

What to Expect on a Coffee Tour

Why Go on a Coffee Tour in Kona

It’s no secret that Kona produces some of the finest coffee in the world. Located along a small stretch of land across the Hualalai volcano, this special place is steeped (pun intended) in culture and history. Even if you aren’t a big fan of coffee, you are sure to love the scenery, the history, and the adventure of a Kona coffee farm tour.

The drive along the highway to the famed “Kona Belt” is a delightfully scenic drive. Visitors will love driving through quaint villages, like Holualoa, and looking down at the coast 1,000 feet below. At Buddha’s Cup’s farm, visitors get to drive up a steep Hawaii mountain road that winds through lush forests of native Ohia trees. When you arrive at the farm, take a deep breath of the cool mountain air, and don’t forget to turn around and enjoy the view at 2300 feet!

A quality Kona coffee farm tour should offer a warm welcome with Aloha, greeting you upon arrival. Your guide should be able to answer your questions, and give a quick talk about the farm’s history and any awards won. Your coffee farm guide should also have extensive knowledge of coffee tree farming and bean processing.

Coffee Plantation

A nice stroll along the rows of coffee trees is a wonderful part of a coffee tour. There is just something so peaceful about walking among the trees, especially when they’re in full bloom, or laden with coffee “cherries.” This is also a good opportunity to learn about the life cycle of the coffee tree.

Coffee Processing

The harvesting, drying and roasting process of coffee beans is a fascinating part of any coffee tour, and visitors can enjoy seeing every step, including:

  • Harvesting and sorting
  • Dry Milling

Tasting & Gift Shop

Everyone looks forward to a tasty sampling of the different types of coffee grown and roasted at the farm, and the tour guide should provide an explanation about each one (At Buddha’s Cup coffee farm, our peaberry and Imagine coffees are big favorites). Some farms, like Buddha’s Cup, also offer tasty samples of rum cakes, macadamia nuts, and local honey.

Other Coffee Farm Tour Tips

  • If you want to time your tour to see the coffee trees in full bloom, try to schedule some time in January-February.
  • If you want to time your tour to see the bright red coffee beans, try to schedule some time in August-January.
  • Kona coffee farms are located at higher elevations, with cooler temperatures and frequent afternoon rains. Be sure to dress accordingly.
  • Some coffee farms, like Buddha’s Cup, also offer off-road Polaris tours around the property.

Buddha’s Cup is a proud multi-award winner for its coffee, as well as one of the highest-rated coffee farm tours on the island. If you want to take a tour around our coffee farm, we encourage you to call ahead of time for the best possible experience.

10 Trips for a Coffee Tour of the World

Who said you couldn’t plan a whole vacation around coffee? From drinking fresh-roasted java on a coffee plantation in Java to sipping an espresso in its Italian birthplace, every day can be International Coffee Day with a coffee-based trip. Dive into coffee culture in Melbourne, taste true Turkish coffee in Istanbul, and sample some of the world’s most expensive beans on a coffee tour in Hawaii. Grab a cup of joe and start planning your coffee trip around the world.

Italy – Birthplace of Espresso

Cup of coffee in Italy

A pilgrimage to Italy is a must for any coffee connoisseur. It’s the country that invented espresso and the cappuccino, after all. So, it’s no wonder that Italy has a strong coffee culture ruled by seemingly mysterious rituals and rules. Learn the ins and outs with a local guide on a coffee and dessert tour in Rome or Venice .

Tips for Ordering Coffee in Italy:

  • Don’t order milky coffee drinks, such as a cappuccino, caffé latte, or latte macchiato, after 11 AM. Italians consider them bad for digestion if consumed later in the day.
  • If you order a latte, you’ll just get a cup of milk (since that is what you said in Italian). A caffé latte (coffee with milk) is probably what you’re after.
  • Don’t expect a to-go cup. Most Italian café’s serve their coffee in porcelain or glass cups and patrons stand at the bar or sit to enjoy their hot beverage. When in Rome….

Jamaica – Home of Blue Mountain Coffee

Blue Mountain Coffee beans on a coffee tour of a plantation

The cool misty mountains of Jamaica are some of the tallest in the Caribbean with rainfall and soil ideal for growing coffee. So, it’s no wonder that Blue Mountain Coffee, renowned for its mild flavor and lack of bitterness, is one of the most desirable and expensive coffees in the world. Go to the source on a coffee plantation tour in the Blue Mountains and try a freshly roasted cup on the farm. Learn about the labor-intensive process of harvesting, sorting, and vetting these world-class beans and take home a bag—or two—for yourself.

Melbourne, Australia – Coffee Capital of Australia

Coffee tour in Melbourne, Australia

Does Melbourne have the best cafes in the world ? Judge for yourself with a trip to the Coffee Capital of Australia. Casual, eclectic, and quality-focused, coffee culture in Melbourne is more about enjoying a steamy cup of joe with a delicious bite to eat with good company than fueling up with your daily caffeine hit. Discover the city’s hidden-gem coffee shops with a local guide on a café culture walking tour of Melbourne.

Turkey – Take a Coffee Trip Through History

Cup of Turkish coffee in Istanbul

Drinking richly flavored, unfiltered coffee in Turkey is a coffee vacation must. The first coffee beans arrived in Istanbul in 1519, and it didn’t take long for this new drink to catch on. Turkish coffee culture and tradition is even recognized on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Sip this unique brew in historical venues and see old bazaars where people traded these magical beans on a small-group coffee tour of Istanbul . Then, learn the fine art and proper tools to make your own cup of Turkish coffee.

Tips for Drinking Turkish Coffee:

  • Since sugar is cooked directly with the coffee grounds, request your sweetness level when you place your order.
  • Swirl your cup slightly before each sip to remix the grounds with the water for a full-flavored experience.
  • Don’t drink the last drop! Since Turkish coffee is unfiltered, all the grounds settle at the bottom of your cup. Leave the last gritty bit in the bottom to avoid spoiling the experience.

Colombia – Bean to Brew Coffee Tour

Picking coffee beans in Colombia

Blessed with an ideal geography and climate for growing coffee, Colombia produces some of the world’s best coffee. Meet up with a master barista in Bogota or Cartagena to fine-tune your palate by sampling beans from different regions in Colombia and discover how various brewing techniques affect flavor. If you really want to get down to the soil of coffee production in Colombia, journey to a family-run farm for a hands-on coffee tour . See the whole process from seed to cup—and you can even head into the fields to pick coffee cherries yourself.

Vienna, Austria – Elegant Coffee Houses

Coffee and cake served in Vienna

In Vienna, coffee is not just a drink, it’s an experience . Listed as part of Vienna’s intangible cultural heritage, UNESCO describes Viennese coffee house culture as a place “where time and space are consumed, but only the coffee is found on the bill.” Relaxing in elegance as you enjoy your drink—and perhaps a slice of cake—served on a silver tray is a coffee vacation in itself. Avoid the tourist-crowded coffee shops by taking a food and coffee tour with a local .

Hawaii, USA – Kona Coffee Plantation Tour

Welcome to Kona sign in Hawaii

One of the priciest and most prized coffees in the world, Kona coffee grows only on the slopes of Hualalai and Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii. Tour a Kona coffee plantation to see how this gourmet coffee goes from bean to brew. Then, sample its sweet, fruity flavor and see if you can detect its natural hint of nuts or spice when you drink a freshly roasted cup.

Tips for Buying Kona Coffee in Hawaii:

  • Look for labels that say 100% Kona coffee. Many gift shops in Hawaii sell Kona coffee blends that are usually only 10% Kona coffee beans.
  • Buy whole beans instead of grounds. You get more flavor when you grind them just before brewing.
  • Store your coffee in an airtight container in the freezer to optimize freshness when you return from your coffee vacation.

Indonesia – Caffeine-fueled Island Hopping

Coffee cherries in a hand

Of course, a world coffee tour wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Java. Visit the Banaran Coffee Plantation that has been growing quality robusta coffee since 1919 and enjoy a caffeinated cup of java in Java. Indonesia produces quality roasts across its islands, but be sure to include Bali on your coffee vacation. Sample beans sustainably grown alongside vanilla vines and cinnamon and clove trees while hearing about the socially responsible practices of Geo Coffee on a tour on Bali .

Seattle, USA – One of the Best Coffee Cities

Pike Place Market where the original Starbucks is in Seattle

It’s no secret that Seattle reigns as the epicenter of coffee culture in the United States . Birthplace of Starbucks, you can even buy your favorite roast at the original location in Pike Place Market . But beyond the coffee giant, Seattle thrives with a buzzing coffee culture in its many amazing coffee shops . Any coffee-lover’s trip to Seattle should include sipping your nitro cold brew while looking out through a rain-streaked window.

Vietnam – Vietnamese Coffee Vacation

Vietnamese coffee in Vietnam

As the second-largest coffee producer in the world, Vietnam brews its own unique style of coffee that’s well worth a trip. Vietnamese coffee starts with robusta beans, known for their high caffeine content and bitter bite, roasted with butter and brandy. Traditionally, the coarsely ground beans are brewed through a metal drip filter called a phin then mixed with sweetened condensed milk. You can have it cool with ice or whipped with an egg for a custardy beverage. Discover all the ways to appreciate coffee in Hanoi with a local guide .

5 Best Amsterdam Coffeeshops

A guide to coffeeshop culture.

shop coffee tour

If you’re curious about the coffeeshop culture in Amsterdam and you want to find a great spot to visit, this post covers some of the most notable and historic locations in the city.

Our tour guides are always being asked about this subject, and we have compiled a lot of their most helpful advice in this post.

This guide also provides details about the differences between a coffee shop and a coffee house, what the rules are regarding the use of cannabis, and other helpful information.

For even more helpful suggestions, make sure to check our section for tips from locals and travelers to get their perspective as well!

Coffeeshop vs Coffeehouse: What’s the Difference?

If you’re just looking for a cup of coffee, chances are that you won’t have much trouble, because both coffee shops and coffee houses (koffiehuis) sell the delicious drink, as well as cafes!

However, visitors who want to partake in some cannabis will need to specifically find one of the many Amsterdam coffee shops, as they are the only locations that allow this activity.

Here are a few other details you might want to consider before heading out to a coffee shop.

Why do they call it a coffee shop in Amsterdam?

They do actually sell coffee at these shops, but the reason this specific name was chosen is that it was used as a cover before the legal policy on cannabis had been clarified.

Even though it has been decades since the policy was changed, the cover name for these locations remained the same.

Do Amsterdam cafes sell cannabis?

As if it weren’t confusing enough, there are also a lot of cafes in Amsterdam.

These quaint little restaurants do not offer cannabis. Instead, they focus primarily on coffee, juice, pastries, and other small snacks.

Can tourists visit an Amsterdam coffee shop?

Yes, of course!

Although there have been recent calls to make coffeeshops limits off-limits for tourists, no such measures have been put into place just yet.

Do Amsterdam coffee shops accept credit cards?

Most coffee shops in this city do not accept foreign credit cards, so you’ll need to bring cash if you want to visit.

Are Amsterdam coffee shops open all year round?

For the most part, yes.

That said, some will close for holidays, so you might have to look around for an open location on specific days of celebration such as Christmas.

Is Cannabis Actually Legal in Amsterdam?

Technically, it is not actually legal in the Netherlands.

That said, as long as you get it from a licensed coffee shop, possession of cannabis is permitted thanks to a legal grey area.

If you want to avoid getting in trouble, all you really have to do is stick to the licensed coffee shops, as they will ensure that your possession and use of cannabis is fully legal.

The law requires them to follow a specific set of regulations, including the following:

This street in Amsterdam is lined with coffeeshops and cafes. Image source: Pixabay user Kevin Phillips.

  • 5 grams or less: Amsterdam coffee shops are not allowed to sell more than 5 grams of cannabis to anyone in one day.
  • No advertisement: Coffeeshops are not allowed to advertise that they sell cannabis.
  • Age restrictions: Coffeeshops are not allowed to sell cannabis to minors under the age of 18.
  • No hard drugs: Cannabis is pretty much the only major drug they are allowed to sell.

For those who are still nervous, here are a few extra tips to consider:

  • Start slow: Don’t get out of control - if you’re new to cannabis, it probably won’t take a lot to feel the effects.
  • Ask the experts: If you’re going to visit a coffee shop, you can trust that the people working there probably have the answers to any questions you might have.
  • Visit multiple locations: If you’re not comfortable at one coffee shop, just head to another one!
  • Don’t take it to the airport: You won’t be allowed to take cannabis back onto an airplane, so there’s no point in buying a lot of it, which is another reason not to get carried away.

TIP: As recently as 2022, there have been calls to limit the sale of cannabis at coffee shops to only locals and residents of the city. The stated reason for this is that the city believes it attracts the wrong type of tourist.

If you want to help keep this fun activity legal and safe in Amsterdam, please be courteous and try not to cause a disturbance while in or around coffee shops, as it may send the wrong message.

This section will list some of the most historic and best coffee shops in Amsterdam, but if you want some help locating each of them, we recommend going on a coffee shop tour instead.

No matter which shops you choose, you can usually expect them to have a variety of both indica and sativa strains to choose from, pre-rolled joints, edibles such as space cakes or soda, and more on their menu.

1. Bulldog Coffeeshop

Leidseplein 15, 1017 PS Amsterdam

This is actually the first coffee shop in Amsterdam, so it’s definitely a great place to start if you’re looking for a location with history.

Another nice thing about this shop is that it’s centrally located.

They even have a hotel right next to the canal, and that might be a better option for anyone who wants to have easy access to marijuana/cannabis within a few minutes walk from their hotel room.

Jonge Roelensteeg 12- 14, 1012 PL Amsterdam

If you’re looking for a different kind of vibe, this spot is known for having very unique and creative interior design.

One of the nicest things about this shop is that they offer free internet and are friendly to tourists.

They also have longer opening hours than other locations, staying open until 1 am each night.

3. Grey Area

Oude Leliestraat 2, 1015 AW Amsterdam

Speaking of that legal grey area that allows Amsterdam coffee shops to sell cannabis, this is another great location you might want to visit.

Many consider them to have the best weed in the city, and it’s especially popular among Americans.

Famous visitors like Snoop Dogg, Bush, the Deftones, and more are just another reason why this is a favorite for many visitors.

4. Original Dampkring

Handboogstraat 29, 1012 XM Amsterdam

This is a great option for anyone who is new to cannabis, as they cater to international audiences.

If you’re a movie buff, you might want to visit just to see where the cast of Ocean’s 12 spent time while shooting in Amsterdam.

Like Abraxas, they are also open until 1 am each night.

5. Barney’s Coffeeshop

Haarlemmerstraat 102, 1013 EW Amsterdam

If you’re looking for some of the best marijuana in Amsterdam, Barney’s has won multiple awards for their weed.

They’re welcoming to both locals and tourists, and they also sell a variety of food as well.

As a matter of fact, they’re almost like a small restaurant, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner options.

The atmosphere here is relaxed, so it’s a great place to grab a bite and some bud.

While you can trust our tour guides to give you a lot of helpful advice and information while visiting Amsterdam, there are some cases where it might be a good idea to get a second opinion.

When it comes to the subject of coffeeshops, both locals and travelers can be quite opinionated!

If you want to see what they have to say, check either the Amsterdam Travel Tips group or our very own Amsterdam Travel Tips and Hacks group on Facebook.

Here are a few of the better suggestions and tips we found regarding Amsterdam coffeeshops.

Sometimes tourists will have concerns about how busy the coffeeshops can get, but as this traveler confirms, it's really not that much of a problem.

Try as we might, we couldn't find anyone reporting a problem with coffeeshops being too busy to serve them.

As the third commenter notes, even on holidays it's usually quite easy to find a table and get whatever you want or need.

If, like everyone else, you're trying to figure out which coffeeshop is the best, here are some of the most popular locations recommended by locals and travelers.

Katsu is one of the locations most frequently noted on various Amsterdam Facebook groups.

A lot of locals consider it their favorite spot, but it's also frequently mentioned alongside a lot of the more popular coffeeshops, including some of the following.

New Times is another popular option, and you can even see it listed right alongside Katsu in an earlier comment.

Of course, that's not to say that some of the more well-known locations aren't also well-liked.

Abraxas, Bulldog, and Grey Area often receive special mentions in these Facebook groups, although they are usually considered more touristy.

‘Community first’: A new coffee shop brews instant popularity in Irvine

Patrons work at a counter at Moongoat Coffee Roasters.

When MoonGoat Coffee Roasters started, co-founder Mark Evans had never thought they’d be talking about opening more than one brick-and-mortar location.

Never mind their fourth location, which they opened officially Thursday afternoon.

The new storefront, tucked inside of the UC Irvine Research Park, has been operating since February and has served more than 6,500 orders since doors opened on California Avenue.

On Thursday afternoon, it bustled with life as baristas moved swiftly behind the bar and students settled in to study for approaching midterms. The sound of someone grinding coffee beans was in the air and Evans smiled proudly as he watched on, cradling a drink of his own.

MoonGoat Coffee Roasters, which first established its roastery in Santa Ana in 2018, opened a retail location in Costa Mesa the following year, then expanded into Garden Grove and Laguna Beach.

Arturo Mandujano Jr., manager of Moongoat Coffee Roasters' newest location .

“When we started, we did a lot of events with the Irvine Co. through pop-ups and catering. That kind of got us in the door with the Irvine Co., and we knew that [this] spot was special just through our Costa Mesa location,” Evans said. “We had so many people from UCI coming to us and asking, ‘When are you going to open a spot in Irvine?’ so we knew we were going to do it eventually. We just didn’t know when, and the opportunity came up here. It used to be a Starbucks, then it was a Steam [Coffee Bar]. The minute we rolled up, we were like, ‘Yes.’

“I didn’t even have to walk in the door.”

Evans said the rest came together swiftly over two months, and the opening of the Irvine location was the most successful to date.

Barista Michelle Chen hands an iced latte to a customer at Moongoat Coffee Roaster's newest location.

A former musician, Evans said he used to tour around the country and would see interesting coffee shops all over the world, but when he’d return to his native Orange County he wouldn’t see anything close to the coffee scene elsewhere. He liked the community feeling he experienced in other shops and wanted provide the same ambiance in every location MoonGoat would eventually set up.

“There’s a couple of mom and pop shops [here], but nothing like I saw on the road. And so, my dream after music was to open a coffee shop. I’d never worked in coffee in my life, which is crazy, but that’s when the out-of-the-box thinking comes in. I partnered up with David [Longridge], who was corporate Starbucks and was at the same roadblock,” Evans said. “So as the perfect storm, we got together and found a location in Costa Mesa in an industrial area.

“We thought we were crazy for opening there, but it turned out to be a super success.”

A poured latte sits on the counter at MoonGoat Coffee Roasters' newest location.

At least or now, the business is staying in Orange County because there’s already an oversaturation of coffee shops in neighboring Los Angeles County, he explained, and because he wanted to bring something special to this region, specifically. Any plans for physical expansion past the Irvine location, he said, would have to develop organically.

He said he felt what makes MoonGoat unique is the quality of what it serves. The company sources its coffee beans from all over the world, as well as locally. Evans regularly makes purchasing sojourns to Japan because he appreciates the quality of their matcha.

The food served at MoonGoat, he said, is also made in house.

Patrons work, study and lounge inside Moongoat Coffee Roasters' newest location.

“It’s a place people can go and hang out. It’s not like a store. I’m not throwing Starbucks under the bus, but if you go into a Starbucks, there’s a couple of places you can set up your laptop. Here, I could have 60 people studying and having work parties,” Evans said. “What separates us is community first, then our coffee and matcha and our fun chagaccino drinks — the mushroom drinks, which I didn’t think would be a super hit. I think that it’s a lot of that, plus the work we put in.”

Evans said his team is passionate about their work and that he sometimes feels through MoonGoat that he is still a musician, putting in as much effort to perform in front of a crowd as he is sourcing the ingredients and maintaining the brand. The Irvine location, he said, like the three others that the company operates, is for him about providing a safe space for people to enjoy their experience

“I’ve heard this a million times from our customers. They’ll come up to me and go, ‘Are you the owner? Are you one of the owners?’ and I’ll be like, ‘Yeah.’ And they’ll go, ‘I just want to thank you for opening a spot where I can bring my family and feel comfortable.’ I’ve heard it so many times that I should record it because it always warms my heart to hear,” he said. “It means we’re doing right by the community.”

MoonGoat officials and Selina Urquiza of Irvine Vice Mayor Larry Agran's office celebrate the opening.

Popular coffee shop opening new location in Rochester

shop coffee tour

A popular local coffee house is opening a satellite location in the Hyatt Regency Rochester, 125 E. Main St. Boulder Coffee Co. owner Keith Rose, 38, of Gates, hopes to have the new venture up and running by April 1.

“I wasn’t really looking to expand,” said Rose, who has owned Boulder, 100 Alexander St., for the past three years.

However, last December he was approached by Hyatt general manager Jay Rettberg asking whether Boulder would be interested in doing business in the hotel’s second-floor lobby.

“Obviously, it was a great news,” Rose said. “We were really excited to hear from them” — and that Rettberg wanted to add a local business to the property.

The lobby space is now being remodeled for Boulder.

Whereas the original South Wedge location, in existence since 2005, has rustic décor, the hotel operation “will have more of a modern feel,” Rose said. “We want it to kind of match some of the interior they have there. So, it will be a simple, modern, sleek design.”

The business will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily to start off, he said.

It will offer the same coffee options as Boulder and a selection of grab-and-go food items (cookies, muffins, etc.).

The new Hyatt Boulder will not replace a Starbucks that opened on the hotel’s ground floor in 2017 and is now closed.

Make coffee your way: A Seattle barista shares pro tips

Coffee is a simple joy in life many of us partake in every day. Whether it’s because we desperately need the caffeine boost or we simply love the taste, it’s an enjoyable part of a daily routine — a welcome break from a packed agenda and lengthy to-do list.

A lot of us have our favorite local coffee shops that we frequent nearly every day (the ones that have our order memorized and start whipping it up the moment they see us walk in the door). But when our meeting schedule, parenting schedule, or a nasty cold means a trip to the local coffee shop is no longer an option, don’t despair — there are several easy ways to upgrade your coffee at home.

“I’m a full believer that there’s so many different variations you can do with coffee,” says Dakotah Garcia, a barista at Ballard Coffee Co. “The flavors, the milk, the textures; there’s so many different things you can mix it with. You can have it iced or frothy or hot … That’s what’s so fun about it. You can do so many different things with the coffee and there’s so many different types of flavors that you can try.”

Creamer is often a key component of coffee drinks both at home and ordered from the coffee shop — and in January, the Seattle-based company Darigold launched its new Belle brand of dairy-based coffee creamer made with just five simple ingredients, including real cream, sugar and natural flavors.

“The coffee creamer space is dominated by big brands that aren’t real cream at all,” Dan Hofmeister, president of Darigold’s business to consumer division, says in the launch news release. “We saw that as an opportunity to make the best coffee creamer for the best coffee experience.”

Garcia, who uses Darigold both on the job at Ballard Coffee Co. and at home when he’s preparing his own coffee, shares some of his insider expert tips for making coffee treats at home. One of them even happens to be a dessert that he says tastes similar to chocolate mousse.

Cinna honey

  • Make espresso shots in Moka espresso pot.
  • Pour into a mug lined with cinnamon and honey on the bottom.
  • Using frother wand, froth up vanilla or sweet cream creamer.
  • Pour froth on top for hot, yummy coffee.

Dalgona coffee (a South Korean style)

  • Combine two tablespoons of instant coffee and two tablespoons of sugar.
  • Pour two tablespoons of hot water over this mixture.
  • Froth with a frother wand until the mixture is creamy.
  • Pour milk or creamer over ice in a glass.
  • Dollop the coffee mixture on top.

Crema di caffee (a snack or dessert)

  • Use cool espresso shots (not hot).
  • Add a couple spoons of powdered sugar and mix it in well with espresso.
  • Pour into a used plastic bottle (water bottle or clean soda bottle).
  • Add heavy cream or creamer to fill the bottle halfway so you have room to shake it.
  • Put the lid on and shake it until it makes a slapping sound and it looks creamy and whipped.
  • Squeeze it into a cup and eat with a spoon.

Garcia emphasizes not to be afraid to try your own creations at home — you may just surprise yourself.

And most important, have fun with it. “You know how people sometimes can look at wine and be pretentious and snobby?” he says. “Coffee is just supposed to be fun and it’s for everyone. Anyone can have it, anyone can make it, and it’s fun when you make it at home. There are so many drinks you can make at home.”

With more than 100 years of dairy expertise, Darigold crafted Belle Coffee Creamer to change how people see coffee creamer. Good ingredients sourced from the best locations for a cup of coffee you dream of. That’s the beauty of Belle.

Brewery/coffee shop Vennture Brew Co. to open second location in Brookfield this weekend

Vennture Brew Co., pictured here on Jan. 27, 2023, opened at 5519 W. North Ave. in Milwaukee's Washington Heights neighborhood in 2018. Its second location is opening on March 16 in Brookfield, in the former Biloba Brewing space at 2970 N. Brookfield Road.

Milwaukee coffee shop and brewery Vennture Brew Co. is opening its Brookfield location on Saturday, March 16.

The brewery-coffee shop hybrid is opening its new space at 2970 N. Brookfield Road in time for St. Patrick’s Day with limited hours, it announced on social media Friday . It comes almost six years after the business opened its original location on North Avenue — and with significantly more space for customers.

“It’s nerve wracking, it’s exciting,” said Rob Gustafson, a co-owner of the business. “As beer and coffee have become more hyperlocal … we like to meet people where they are, instead of making them make the long journey to us.”

The new Brookfield space is about 1,500 square feet and will seat about 80 people inside, compared to about 50 on North Avenue, he said. Its outdoor patio is about twice as large as their original location and there’s also about double the brewing capacity at the new space.

Vennture Brew Co. originally opened at 5519 W. North Ave. in July 2018. Gustafson said they began conversations about purchasing their new location with its owners, the former Biloba Brewing, about two years ago.

“It’s something that became evident the first year or so that we would probably have to (expand,)” Gustafson said.

Upon opening, the coffee side of the business will lag a bit behind as espresso equipment is still on order, he said. Instead, they’ll sell pre-packaged coffee from their other location and incorporate drip coffee and cold brew coffee in the coming weeks.

For its initial opening this weekend, Vennture Brew Co. will be open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. It will have those same hours and days next week. Once it's open fully, they will operate seven days a week, Gustafson said.

They’re still evaluating what the business's official hours will be, he said. The owners want to monitor traffic at the location to determine opening hours, but it would likely be between 6 and 7 a.m. and closing around 9 p.m. on the weekdays and 10 p.m. from Thursday and into the weekends.

So, will Vennture Brew Co. stop at two locations or might there be more in the future?

“Oh, man, we haven’t even opened this one here," Gustafson said. "I guess that’s to be determined and see how this goes and where that positions us, but it’s never a no.”

I’m a former Tour de France star and national champion… now I’m making my own way in new career as coffee shop owner

  • Dylan Terry

FORMER Tour de France rider Christian Meier quit cycling and now has a new career as a coffee shop owner.

The Canadian, 39, retired from the sport back in 2016 following an impressive career at the top level.

Christian Meier rode the 2014 Tour de France

He won the Canadian national road race title in 2008, before he went on to appear in five Grand Tours - the last of which was the 2014 Tour de France where he placed 121st.

While his best years may well have been ahead of him, he opted to hang up his bike at the age of just 31.

But the years that have followed have seen Meier pursue several new career paths.

They have included ultra-running in which he won the prestigious 150km TDS race in Chamonix last year.

He has also founded a sustainable clothing brand alongside English businessman called Tom Austen.

But it is the acquisition of two coffee shops in Girona - where he now lives - that caught the eye as the most unusual of Meier's post-cycling pursuits.

And the Canadian, who runs La Fabrica Girona and Espresso Mafia alongside his wife, Amber, explained the decision to leave cycling for new ventures as something fuelled by "getting too comfortable".

Speaking to BBC Sport , he said: "It got to the point in cycling where I started to feel like I was doing the same races, and getting too comfortable.

He then went on to add: "I think it's that Buddhist concept of just having a child's mind more in your life.

"A child's mind is full of curiosity; it has not yet had things imposed about what you can and can't do.

"As a child, your imagination is: 'I want to go to the moon'. But most people maybe pick something easier to do, you know?

I Can’t Stop Talking About Pocket Coffee

shop coffee tour

I’ve got an undue excitement for Italian things, which is why I spend so much time at the Italian grocery store (both Stateside and in Italy), where I first spotted Pocket Coffee.

When I picked up the slim box with its charmingly outdated typeface, I noticed that it was made by Ferrero, but could otherwise glean no information before I made an impulse purchase. Inside the box I found five individually wrapped chocolates, all printed with the text “LIQUID INSIDE.” As I popped the whole thing in my mouth, I expected it to be filled with the sticky, gushing syrup found in a cheap box of drugstore chocolates, but was astounded to discover the opposite. As the packaging warned me, it was actually liquid inside — liquid espresso , about the volume of one-third of a shot. Upon scrupulous examination, I can confirm that the actual anatomy of a Pocket Coffee is this: a dark-chocolate shell, with an interior coated in sugar, filled with slightly sweetened espresso. Light, crunchy, rich, and not too sweet. It’s the perfect portable caffeine and sugar kick — just right for a late-afternoon boost, or a replacement for a worse habit.

For me, a person with a penchant for drinking too much coffee , it both satisfies that 3 p.m. craving for another cup and is a delightful way to spice up my afternoon routine with a dual-purpose treat. I’ve been buying them in cases of 32 boxes of five so I always have them on hand to share with friends, include in care packages, or put out in a cute bowl when entertaining.

Ferrero Pocket Coffee Espresso Chocolates

In an effort to understand the reputation and context of Pocket Coffee in its home culture, I reached out to my favorite Italian friend crush, Marianna Fierro , who is a renowned food illustrator and fellow Pocket Coffee connoisseur. After confirming that Pocket Coffee is her favorite Italian candy, Marianna explained to me that in Italy, Pocket Coffee is as common as any Hershey’s product here. Since Pocket Coffee’s introduction in 1968, it has been advertised on TV in Italy regularly in scenarios where Pocket Coffee saves the day of a tired worker , a distracted student , or a sleepy traveler . It’s beloved as a checkout-counter treat at restaurants, cafés, and grocery stores, and most remarkably, it’s seasonal. Due to the precarious nature of the liquid filling, Pocket Coffee is typically only available from November to April when it’s not likely to melt. During these months, Pocket Coffee can be found everywhere in Italy, which makes it all the more surprising that it’s such a rarity, even in NYC.

Marianna shared something that I had hoped would be the truth — that what makes Pocket Coffee so special is not just its intended purpose, described by the slogan “the energy of chocolate and the charge of coffee,” but the strong nostalgia factor. For many Italian children, she says, it’s the first taste of coffee they experience. We joked that perhaps it hasn’t made its mark Stateside yet because Americans can’t be trusted to take the “LIQUID INSIDE” warning seriously, but agreed that Pocket Coffee is a product that deserves a place on the shelf in all Italian groceries alongside its friends Baci Perugina, Raffaello, and Mon Cheri. As she likened the flavor profile to that of a good espresso martini, I, a nondrinker , dreamt of a world where Pocket Coffee is as common as the popular cocktail .
