With its pristine white beaches, technicolor sunsets, and numerous adventure activities, there is something for every kind of traveler. This region is best explored aboard the Aqua Blu, one of the best cruises Bali has seen.

On this itinerary, Aqua Blu sets off for the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Komodo National Park, an incredible natural wonder spanning 669 square miles. It comprises three main islands — Komodo, Padar and Rinca — and 26 smaller islets best relished aboard. Several of these are inhabited by prehistoric creatures such as the native Komodo Dragon – the largest lizard species walking the Earth.

Its picturesque coastline and green-capped hills are so iconic, they’re even featured on Indonesia’s 50,000 Rupiah note. The island brings together a unique landscape of three crescent-shaped beaches with pink, black, and white sands. It’s a rare sight you can look forward to on our cruises to Bali and the Komodo Islands.

Situated between Bali and Komodo National Park, Moyo Island is a Nature Reserve generally unknown to most tourists and is best explored aboard our cruises from Bali. Featuring nature and marine habitats virtually untouched by outside influences, explorers are presented with a large variety of flora and fauna including Mata Jitu, a magical, cascading waterfall.

Bali Cruises: Soak in the Colorful Cultures of Indonesia

Home to 300 ethnic groups who speak over 700 languages among them, Indonesia is a melting pot of culture and tradition. Traveling across its islands is sure to be an eye-opening experience as visitors observe the different ways of life that have become common over time.

cruise flores indonesia

Those visiting the islands on cruises from Bali may be able to experience various Indonesian festivals depending on the time of year and islands visited. A notable one is the Nyepi Festival, or Day of Silence, celebrated in Bali.

The most important Hindu holiday in Bali, this festival marks the Balinese New Year. In essence, it’s a day of low activity and quiet for introspection, a stark contrast to the boisterous New Years celebrated by other cultures. The day of the festival itself may be quieter but on the days before and after, those visiting may have a chance to witness loud parades and other rituals that do not mandate silence.

The whale shark is the largest fish in the world, growing to the size of a city bus. Despite their intimidating size, whale sharks are actually non-predatory and rather gentle. Less than 10% of whale sharks born survive to adulthood, but those that do may live to 150 years old. Don’t miss the chance to swim with these sweet-natured giants on Aqua Blu’s cruises from Bali.

A mix of three vibrant colors, the early British visitors of Papua literally could not believe a bird so beautiful could exist. The aptly named bird, also called Cendrawasih, is a triple threat – on top of beauty, this species can also sing and dance. Unfortunately, a combination of poaching and deforestation has led to the species being endangered. Seize the opportunity to possibly spot them on Aqua Blu, the best cruise ship Bali has seen.

A Komodo Sailing Trip to Secret Islands

The slice of heaven is rarely featured on most holiday-makers bucket list, and that’s what makes this trip even better. Though it’s just 90 minutes flight from Denpasar, Flores is totally a world away from Bali’s wild night parties and celebrated coastal lifestyle. The wilderness of nature is the only wild thing you will find here.

Flores and the islands of Komodo National Park are dominantly occupied by green grasses, savannah, and lounging trees. Miles and miles of rolling hills are only split by a single highway, running from the western end to eastern end of the island with few cars passing by. Modernisation even seems to shy away at most of the surrounding island, leaving them totally bare and wild with only trekking trails runs along the wavy terrain.

A journey with Komodo Liveaboard is hard to be described by words alone. Indonesia is rarely the same, and Flores will show you how it really means. Tropical jungle stretched across the mainland where it peaked on  volcanic mountains of Kelimutu  and Inerie mountains, resembling Indonesian landscape in general. However, tucked in the eastern part of Indonesia, some of the islands are among the driest part of Indonesian archipelago. And it turns the over one-meter-high grass into gorgeous auburn path, which is more vibrant during the dry season.

Beyond the crisp savannah, pristine beaches ringed the islands. You might expect soft and white, sugary beaches, but the Komodo’s pink beaches are the real game changer. Colored beaches are rare beauty of the earth, and it’s one of the only seven beaches on the island. With this kind of varied, distinct topography, Flores will definitely take you to the other side of Indonesia. Almost like a secret island that no one knows about.

Idyllic and unspoiled, Flores and the surrounding islands looks like a slice of paradise that just fall from the sky itself. This is a gateway to remote adventure, a digital detox from your busy life. Without an internet connection, nothing will distract you from the stunning surrounding.  Trekking , swimming,  snorkeling , and immortalize the stunning landscape in your digital device will keep you busy for days – no need for internet check-in.

You gonna find yourself between the winds and swinging meadow with only few tourists around. Outside the mainland Flores, some island is totally unpopulated while some others are just inhabited by 2,000 thousand people, living side by side with the notorious  Komodo Dragon  who roams freely in their protected sanctuaries. This is where you can taste the Indonesian version of the wild west in its pure, unadulterated nature.

Dock to the Islands

The adventure of your Komodo Cruise doesn’t end once you come ashore. Rising to fame thanks to the  Komodo Dragon , Flores and the Komodo National Park has become an increasingly must-go destination for true travelers, especially those who want a little escape from the hustle and bustle of neighboring Bali.

This is where the islands are ruled by high and undulating hills, the sun shines brightly almost throughout the year, and its tranquil waters gently lap more than 20 string of coastline of the isles. This means a lot of shores to explore on your  Komodo tours , featuring picture-perfect hilly terrain overlooking the blue ocean and cluster of islets, sugary beaches, mangroves, lush slopes, and brownish dry grassland.

Komodo National Park is the most popular spot to dock. The park consist of three major islands which are equally famous;  Komodo island ,  Rinca island , and  Padar Island . These islands are the only places on earth where Komodo Dragons roam freely between the bushes and sunbathing on its shores. They share the islands with deer, wild buffalos, horses, wild boars, and other wildlife—some are their prey. This is where you can have live encounter with the largest reptile in the world, guided by professional rangers.

Aside from the wildlife, the national park will also entertain you with outstanding landscapes. The  Padar island  is home of the notorious four deep bays, multi-colored beaches. And yes, that includes the most-awaited pink beach.

Around the east of Flores, several small islands rose within reach to each other. The twin  Sebayur islands , Siaba,  Gili Lawa Darat ,  Kalong , and  Kelor  are to just name a few. Most of the islands offers open landscape with  fantastic trek  that can supply your social media feed for a lifetime!

Some of the islands offer snorkeling opportunity just a few meters off the shore, with rich corals to greet you. The sight can get more dramatic as you slide to the underwater world from the  Pink beach , as you will see the baby pink sandy beach trails down to the seabed. Healthy Foraminifera—red coral reef—lining up at the shallow water, and you will know how the Pink beach got its name.

If you are thinking that Komodo National Park is the only place to find wildlife adventure, look no further than  Kalong island . The island is almost entirely covered with mangroves—so thick you almost cannot see the land. And hanging from the treetops are thousands of bats, undisturbed by the eye of curious travelers.

The Komodo cruise cannot dock to this island, but the captain will try to get you as close as possible to the massive, mangrove-build cave if you wish to have a closer look to this wonderful creature. This small and mysterious island reveal its magic near the dusk, when the bats rush to fly from their home and chattering under the violet sky, looking for its food at the neighbouring islands. Don’t worry, they are not interested to your blood—fruits are more appealing to these wild flying foxes.

Some fly to Flores just for the  Komodo Dragon , but the true traveler knows that exploring the less-discovered islands in between are the true travel gem. It’s a loss to just pass by the islands without taking time to venture on its wonders.

Best Time to Revel in the Archipelago

The best time to sail to Flores and Komodo National Park is during the dry season which lasts from the May to August. Clearly not advisable to enjoy a good sail as the sea can be rough, the wind too strong, and the showering rain prevents the scenic landscape to appear.

You will have the independence and flexibility to design your Labuan Bajo tours itinerary. Pack your schedule with colorful beaches galore, walk the tracks to the undulating hills, or submerge in every corner of coral garden, create your own personal stops to make the experience your own. All you need is just over a week to see the highlights, and it can all be done on a budget and with public transport.

There are flights from Ende or Maumere to Labuan Bajo or even Kupang, from where you can connect to another flight. Check out the best flight deals on Skyscanner .

The Flores Itinerary on a Map & Where is Flores Indonesia?

Flores Island is located in the volcanic belt that stretches from Sumatra to Java, and Bali until the Banda sea. It is part of what is known as East Nusa Tenggara.  Flores is easy to reach from Bali or Java in Indonesia by plane. See the map below to view exactly where is Flores Indonesia.

Flores Itinerary

Day 1 – Day 3 Labuan Bajo & Komodo National Park

Explore Komodo National Park and Spot the Legendary Komodo Dragons

One of the top draws to the island of Flores is a visit to Komodo National Park. Home to some of the world’s most unique wildlife, including Komodo dragons, you can view these enormous creatures in their natural habitat whilst taking in the stunning tropical surroundings.

The view of Padar Island in Komodo National Park

Your Komodo Island tour can be organised from Labuan Bajo or pre-book your trip online.

We recommend spending the 2 days in the park on an overnight boat trip. This will allow you to see the best of the park.

Island Flores in Indonesia Itinerary for Flores Komodo Island

Essentially, you will stay 1 night in Labuan Bajo, then do an overnight trip to Komodo (1 night) and 1 night back in Labuan Bajo after it.

If you choose to go with the one-day tour to Komodo Island instead of the overnight trip , you can move on to Ruteng earlier and use the extra night in Kalimutu.

We stayed at Danke Lo dge, located outside of the main town, but the staff was super helpful and happy to drive us and pick us up at any time (complimentary service). We booked our overnight trip to Komodo and returned to sleep here before heading off to Ruteng the following morning.

Labuan Bajo is a nice little town with a few great places for coffee and food.

We booked our bus with Gunung Mas Bus Company, which operates modern medium-sized buses with air-conditioning. They also pick you up at your hotel in Labuan Bajo, so it’s very convenient.

We booked the 8 a.m. bus to Ruteng; the cost was 120,000 IDR (8 USD) per person, and the journey time was 4 hours. They dropped us at our guesthouse.

Of course, there are cheaper ways to travel via public transport in Flores, such as bemo (a little minibus, quite squashy when they fill up) or shared cars. We highly recommend paying that little bit extra to travel with Gunung Mas; it was very comfortable, not to mention reliable vehicles, too.

Day 4 Ruteng

Visit Ruteng, the Heart of Flores’ Ancient Culture in its Traditional Villages and Spider Web Rice Fields

Visit the small mountain town of Ruteng, located in the central part of Flores. If you wish to visit one of the most famous traditional villages, Wae Rebo, you can do so from here on your free day or pre-book it from Labuan Bajo as an overnight tour.

Wae Rebo can be visited for a day; there is a fee for lunch or an overnight stay, which costs 325,000 IDR per person for sleep and meals. Please note you will sleep in one big hut with very basic facilities: no electricity or internet.

If you go to Wae Rebo and stay overnight, you must add the extra night to this itinerary. Getting here independently on public transport is complex, and it would essentially take 3 days, so it is best to arrange transport from Labuan Bajo and then get a drop-off at Bajawa (it should cost around 2,500,000 IDR from Labuan Bajo)

Island Flores in Indonesia Itinerary for Flores Wae Rebo

You can visit other traditional villages near Ruteng; the closest one in Ruteng is Ruteng Puu Traditional Village (65,000 IDR pp entry fee as of Feb 2023). It’s an easy ride on a motorbike to reach Ruteng Puu Traditional Village.

We visited the local market; seeing the Spider Web Rice Fields was highlighted. We rented a motorbike (100,000 IDR) for the day from our guesthouse.

It takes about 30 minutes to get to the Spider Web Rice Fields, and you can either stop at the viewpoint, the location is here on Google Maps, and you pay a small fee. Or, like us, you could ride a little further and stop at this little cafe overlooking the rice paddies for coffee or Bakso soup for lunch.

Lunch at Spider Web Rice Fields Island Flores in Indonesia

A great place to eat in Ruteng is the Chacha guesthouse next to the bus station. We came to book our bus to Bajawa at the Gunung Mas bus station/ticket office and had a delicious lunch at Chacha.

The other great travellers’ meeting point is Kopi Mane in town. Great coffee and good food.

Day 5 – 6 Bajawa

Discover the stunning beauty of Bajawa from traditional villages, hot springs, and views of nearby volcanoes

No other attraction will give you a better insight into the traditional culture of Bajawa than the Bena Traditional Village. Walk around this ancient village and admire the traditional houses built with thatched roofs, stone foundations, and ancient burials.

Bena Traditional Village Flores in Indonesia

You can hire a motorcycle or a driver with a car to get here. It will take about 30 minutes to get here, with amazing views of the nearby volcanoes. The roads to Bena Village are in great condition, and we found the motorcycle ride here relatively easy.

The entrance was 25,000 IDR per person, and we asked one of the young boys to show us around the village as he spoke English.

Stunning views of the volcano near Bajawa

We then continued to the Manulalu Lookout, where you can enjoy coffee or lunch. The restaurant here provides panoramic views of the natural beauty below, from lush tropical forests to the smell of nearby volcanic hot springs.

You can then visit the Malanage hot springs. The thermal water flow bubbles up from the ground at 43°C and is naturally stimulating – it’s also believed to have numerous health benefits.

Another great place to stop is the Wolobobo Viewpoint.

This viewpoint offers 360-degree views of the hills, mountains, and valleys that make up Bajawa’s beautiful scenery. On clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of Inerie Mountain!

We stayed at Cinnamon Guesthouse in Bajawa and enjoyed the food at Maibeth Restaurant, conveniently located just across the road to the left. The owner of the guesthouse, Johannes, helped us book the early bus to Moni the following morning at 6.30 a.m.

It was not the Gunung Mas bus but a standard small bus, so there was no AC, and it stopped along the way a lot, but it got us to Moni in 6.5 hours. The price for this journey was 120,000 IDR per person.

Day 7 Moni & Kelimutu

Travel to Kelimutu and See its Three Coloured Lakes

Also known as the ‘Three Colors Lakes of Mt. Kelimutu’, these three lakes are situated at the summit of this majestic mountain.

The view is beyond beautiful, and you’ll be awe-struck by the dramatic landscape before you, especially when the first morning rays hit the blue, turquoise, and brown lakes!

To get to Kelimutu Lakes, you will need to first get to the town of Moni. The town caters to tourists and has a few guesthouses/hotels.

We stayed at Joseph Lodge , which was lovely but about a 10-15 minute walk into town. Mahoni Lodge or the Moon Cafe are the best places to eat.

We enjoyed a fantastic tofu curry with rice at Moon Cafe for 35,000 IDR. The portion was very generous, and it was one of the best meals we ate whilst travelling in Flores.

Our place in Mini - Joseph Lodge

How to get to the Kalimutu Lakes:

Most visitors tend to do the sunrise at Kalimutu Lakes, which means getting up at 4-4.30 am to drive up to the top (about 30 30-minute drive). You will have to pay the entrance fee (150,000 IDR pp) and walk another 20-30 minutes. Here you wait for sunrise.

Of course, you may want to opt out to get there a little bit later, just after 7-8 am to still enjoy the views before the day’s heat.

Kelimutu Lakes in Flores

How much does it cost to get to Kelimutu:

You can hire a motorcycle for 100,000 IDR or a motorcycle with a driver for 125,000 IDR. Or if it is 2 or 3 of you, a driver with a car for about 300,000 – 350,000 IDR roundtrip per car.

Then, it is time to return to Ende for your flight out. We recommend flagging down a shared car, bus, or minivan passing by that is heading toward Ende. A seat in a shared car from Moni is approx 50,000 IDR per person, and the journey time is roughly 1.5 – 2 hours.

Be prepared for a stunning drive to Ende, with towering waterfalls and lush green rainforests everywhere!

The town Ende in Flores

Alternatively, if you have an extra 3 days, we recommend staying an extra night in Moni to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and continue onto Maumere for a day on the beach. The journey time is 3.5 hours to Maumere from Moni.

15 Best Things To Do In Flores, Indonesia In 2024

' src=

The best thing to do in Flores is to take a Komodo Islands Cruise , hands down.

Thousands of visitors every week come from all over the world to see the elusive Komodo Dragons in their natural habitat – But what most travelers don’t know is that Flores is so much more than just the Komodos!

I have been living in Indonesia for the past two years, and I spent a month living in Labuan Bajo, Flores, after taking a Komodo Boat Tour from Lombok.

Flores Island had me floored at the sheer amount of amazing and spectacular things you could do there – Keep reading for my list of the best things you can do in Flores.

15 Best Things to Do in Flores, Indonesia

a luxury Phinisi boat sailing through Komodo Islands national park. Taking a komodo sailing trip is the best thing to do in Flores.

1. Take A Boat Tour Of Komodo National Park

Taking a multi-day boat tour of Komodo Islands National Park is the #1 thing to do in East Nusa Tenggara & Flores Island.

Komodo National Park is home to 29 different islands, each with their own unique flora and fauna. By taking a multi-day Komodo Cruise, you get to go island hopping and see everything Komodo National Park has to offer!

👉 Note! There Are Two Different Types Of Komodo Boat Tours

1)  💵 Backpackers’ Boat:  The 4-day/3-night tour from Lombok to Flores. This is known as the “Backpackers’ Komodo Cruise” or the “Budget Komodo Cruise”. These are only around 2,800,000 IDR per person ($185) and are no-frills.

2)  🍾 Luxury Cruise:  All other Komodo Boat Tours I refer to as “Luxury Boat Tours” because, in comparison to the Backpackers’ Boat, they are the  height of luxury !

The other main difference between the two boat tours is that the Backpackers’ Boat departs from Lombok and sails to Flores, while the standard Komodo Boat Tours departs and lands in Labuan Bajo, Flores.

On a Luxury Komodo Boat Tour, you can expect gorgeous accommodations, a personal photographer, AC in every cabin, and high-end meals.

The best part? The “Luxury” Komodo Cruises  really  don’t cost that much more than the Budget Backpackers’ option! ➡  This Luxury Cruise is the same price as the Backpacker’s Boat!

Padar Island Viewpoint at sunset in Komodo National Park. Padar island is one of the 566 islands in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara Regency, and is right next to the island of flores. Taking a komodo sailing trip is one of the best things to do in Flores.

2. Hike To The Padar Island Viewpoint

Padar Island is another one of the many stops you’ll make if you take a multi-day Komodo Boat Tour.

Padar Island is in Komodo National Park and is only reachable by boat. The 🚢   Multi-Day Komodo Boat Tours  usually arrange it so you’re either climbing to the viewpoint at either sunrise or sunset.

I did both and both sunrise and sunset are equally as beautiful! Padar Island is a rare place that looks just as good in real life as it does on Instagram photos.

💪 Fitness –  The trek to the Padar Island viewpoint is about 20-30 minutes depending on fitness level, but it’s all stairs straight up! I saw young children on the hike but I would recommend wearing some sturdy shoes and bringing a water bottle.

The Pink Beach in Komodo National Park. The Pink Beach gets its name from its pink sand, which is colored by ground up coral! You can visit the pink beach as one of the many stops on a Komodo Boat Tour.

3. Swim At The Magical Pink Beach

The Pink Beach in Komodo National Park is one of those things you see on Instagram and think, “That can’t be real, it has to be photoshopped”.

Well – I’m here to tell you that I’ve been there (TWICE!) and it IS just as real and amazing as these photos make it look!

The pink beach gets its color from ground-up red coral from coral reefs that are mixed with the sand, giving the beach where the water meets the shore this  gorgeous  pink color.

two girls kayaking at Pink Beach in Komodo National Park, in Indonesia. Kayaks are included if you take a more high-end Komodo Boat Tour.

🚢 On the  Luxurious Komodo Islands  cruise I took from Labuan Bajo, Flores, they included kayaks so we could paddle around on the Pink Beach – and it was  amazing !

Not only is Pink Beach special because of its color, but it’s also just the  nicest  beach I have ever been to in my life.

You can only reach Pink Beach via a guided boat tour, which helps keep tourism down and keep the beach in pristine condition.

A komodo dragon on the beach in komodo national park.

4. See The Komodo Dragons At Komodo & Rinca Island

Komodo Dragons are giant reptiles that can grow to be over 10 feet long and weigh 300 pounds! Komodo National Park is the  only place in the world  where you can naturally find the infamous Komodo Dragon.

Full Disclosure, Seeing the Komodo Dragons is a little anti-climactic. They’re usually sleeping on the beach, and while they can run very fast (when they’re hunting) – as a traveler to the islands, you likely won’t see that.

This is because the Komodo Dragons today are fed on the beach of Komodo Island so they’re always readily available for tourists to take pictures with.

And that’s really all visiting Komodo Island is – a quick photo-op with a sleepy dragon. Afterward, you can visit a gift shop where locals sell hand-carved Komodo Dragons you can bring home, and t-shirts that say “I survived Komodo Island”.

🐉 Seeing the Komodo Dragons was a little too touristy for my taste, but since it was just one stop out of many on a Komodo Boat Tour, it’s still a worthwhile experience!

Komodo Dragons on the beach on Komodo Island

Most Boat tours visit Komodo Island, the first island in Komodo National Park that became famous for having a large population of dragons. But lately, since Komodo Island gets so many tourists, tourism has expanded to include Rinca Island as well as Komodo Island.

Rinca Island is supposed to be a little less touristy than Komodo and is another island in East Nusa Tenggara where you can see the Komodo Dragon in its natural habitat.

Wae Rebo Traditional Village is just one of the many amazing things you can do on the island of Flores after taking a Komodo Boat Tour.

5. Trek To Wae Rebo Traditional Village

Wae Rebo is the craziest-looking spot I’ve ever been to! It’s another  gorgeous  spot in East Nusa Tenggara that lives up to the photos I saw of it on Instagram.

Indonesia is made up of thousands of different islands, and all of those islands have individual cultures, rituals, and languages.

On Flores Island alone, there are many different villages that carry on their traditions. Wae Rebo, being situated high up in the mountains of Flores, is the most picturesque.

How To Get To Wae Rebo From Labuan Bajo

Wae Rebo is located a 5-hour drive from Labuan Bajo town, and can only be visited by trekking 1.5-2 hours uphill.

Because of the distance, most travelers visit Wae Rebo via a 2-day/1-night guided tour.

Sleeping in Wae Rebo is a really cool experience – They have these large thatched-roof yurts set up for guests staying overnight in the village.

The Wae Rebo trek was a great way to meet people, as the communal rooms fit around 20 guests. When we were there they served coffee and tea all night for travelers to stay up chatting and we met a lot of cool people.

In the daytime, you can walk around and explore how the locals grow and process coffee, or just enjoy the village.

💪 Fitness:  The hike to Wae Rebo starts out pretty steep, we were huffing and puffing the first half-hour. After that, it evens out and isn’t so steep for the second hour. Because it is uphill, I would make sure to pack sturdy shoes!

A girl driving a scooter to Cunca Wulang Waterfall from labuan bajo, flores.

6. Ride Motor Scooters Around The Island

Some travelers love driving scooters in Bali, but I’m not one of them! The traffic is too hectic, and it makes me a little anxious – but in Flores, I loved driving my scooter!

The roads are wide and open with very little traffic on Flores Island, and it felt like almost every road we drove on had a GORGEOUS view whether it was of the sea or jungle.

If you’re not comfortable driving a scooter in Bali but want to learn or get better, I would recommend trying Flores!  Just remember to always wear your helmet!

You should be able to rent a scooter through your Hotel or Resort in Labuan Bajo.

Rangko Cave is a half hour outside of labuan Bajo, the town that you will be dropped off at after you finish your Komodo Islands Boat Tour.

7. Swim In Rangko Cave

Rangko Cave is a very special kinda-hidden spot that’s 1/2 hour’s drive outside of Labuan Bajo, on the island of Flores.

What makes Rangko Cave so special is that it has super-clear bright blue water that’s actually salt water – so anyone swimming in it naturally floats!

The saltwater makes swimming in Rangko Cave a much more pleasant experience than other famous swimming caves, like the  cenotes in Mexico , because you don’t have to wear a life vest to be able to just float and hang out.

When we went to Rangko Cave there also was no current inside the cave. So we were able to just float and hang out!

👉 Safety Tip! You don’t really need snorkels, flippers, life vests, or any typical swimming things to visit Rangko Cave – but you DO need water shoes! The locals have built some lovely stone steps that descend to the cave pool to make it easy to access, but it hurts getting out of the water!

Paddle boat to Rangko Cave from Flores mainland.

How To Visit Rangko Cave

While Rangko Cave is close to Labuan Bajo, the main port city on the island of Flores where most travelers end their Komodo Boat Tour, it’s a  little difficult  to get to independently.

Rangko Cave is located on a tiny island 20 minutes off the coast of Flores Island, which you can only get to by tiny boat.

The sea between Rangko Cave and mainland Flores is  very shallow , often too shallow for the boats to go all the way to the shore – so you need to wade through the water about 10 meters offshore to get to the boats.

The boat drivers need to be hired independently if you don’t buy a package tour, and they’re a little expensive (200K-400K Indonesian Rupiah, or $10-20 per person, depending on your negotiation skills), so I recommend just taking a guided tour that includes all transportation.

This tour includes a trip to Rankgo Cave, as well as snorkeling at Sabolo Island and Seraya Island!

Swimming With The Wild Whale Sharks in Komodo National Park on a Komodo Boat Tour.

8. Snorkel With The Wild Whale Sharks

Swimming with the wild whale sharks in Komodo National Park was one of the stops my Budget Backpackers’ Komodo Cruise from Lombok to Flores took.

We woke up early on the second day, around 5 AM, to shouts of “ whale shark spotted!!!”  and everyone put on their snorkel sets and jumped in the water.

While Whale Sharks have the word “shark” in their name, whale sharks have very little in common with the Great White from Jaws. Swimming with Whale Sharks is a very safe activity because Whale Sharks actually don’t have teeth.

Instead, Whale Sharks are filter feeders. They can filter over 1,000 gallons of water per hour to find their food of choice, tiny fish like shrimp and plankton through their gills.

Swimming with the Whale Sharks in Komodo National Park was truly the most amazing experience I have ever had before 7 AM!

The traditional villages in Bajawa, Flores, is one of the best things to do in East nusa Tenggara regency of indonesia.

9. See The Traditional Ceremonies In Bajawa

Bajawa is another traditional village on the island of Flores. It’s a bit further from Labuan Bajo than Wae Rebo is, but it also has a reputation for being more authentic and less touristy.

Bajawa is about a 10-hour drive from Labuan Bajo, but it also has a small airport you can take a flight to if it’s within your travel budget. Because of the distance, budget at least 2 days for visiting Bajawa!

If you’re into cultural experiences, the main draw of Bajawa for tourists is the traditional ceremonies.

The ceremonies are for welcoming a new house, as their thatch houses are known for lasting for a century the ceremonies don’t happen  that  often (so you’d be lucky to catch one!).

The traditional ceremonies in Bajawa are a little gore-y – The village chieftains sacrifice many buffalos and pigs, and then the villagers cook the animals and put on a great feast.

The main Traditional village in Bajawa where you can watch these ceremonies is called Bena Village, and the other smaller villages are called Bla, Luba, Tololela, and Gurusina.

There are also two hot springs in Bajawa, the Malanage and Mangeruda Hot Springs, where you can soak in a naturally heated pool.

10. Go Scuba Diving On A LiveAboard Ship!

Along with Raja Ampat, Komodo National Park is considered the best place to scuba dive in the  entire  Indonesian Archipelago! You can see animals like sea turtles, manta rays, whale sharks, and more.

The diving liveaboard ships are usually multi-day tours, ranging from 3-7 days.

Sunset Tour to See The Famous Kalong Bats

11. Take A Sunset Cruise To Watch The Bat Migration Over Kalong Island

Every day at sunset  thousands  of Indonesian wild fruit bats called Flying Foxes, migrate from where they congregate on Kalong Island in Komodo National Park. The bats are nocturnal, so they leave the island as soon as the sun sets to hunt and forage for their food.

You can watch the sunset migration every day from the deck of your boat. We did this on our multi-day 🚢  Komodo Cruise , but you can also book it as a  day trip from Labuan Bajo .

💡  Note:  If you’re afraid of Bats, don’t worry! The boats are parked at a distance.

Giant Manta rays in Komodo National Park. The Manta Rays swim in an ocean corridor about 10 Meters under where the boats are docked from Komodo Boat Tours.

12. Swim With The Wild Manta Rays

Swimming with the wild Manta Rays in Komodo National Park was one of the most insane experiences of my life.

The Manta Rays congregate in Komodo National Park where there’s a natural ocean corridor where there’s a high current. Because they are wild animals, it’s not guaranteed you will see manta rays every time you swim there, but when I went there were over 10!

We were snorkeling about 10-15 feet above the giant manta rays, and it was  surreal! They really are giants!

Swimming with the giant manta rays was one stop out of many we made on a Komodo Boat Tour.

🚨  NOTE!!!  This activity is best for strong swimmers! You’re given fins and a life vest, but the current is very rough where the Manta Rays swim. It’s not dangerous, but if you’re not a strong swimmer you might only get a glimpse of them.

💡 Tip!  If you don’t want to deal with crazy traffic and congestion during your trip to Ubud, I recommend staying 10 minutes outside of the city center, among the rice fields. You’ll have a much more peaceful trip!

🚩  Ethical Issues  – The Manta Rays at Manta Point in Komodo National Park aren’t fed, and you’re observing them from a good 10-20 foot distance, so swimming with the Manta Rays was an ethical animal encounter!

trekking to Mount Kelimutu Lake is one of the best things to do in Flores, in the east Nusa Tenggara regency of indonesia.

13. Trek To The Three-Colored Lake At Kelimutu National Park

Mount Kelimutu in Kelimutu National Park is famous for having a volcano with three lakes in its’ crater, each a different color.

The Red, Green, & Blue lakes have a legend surrounding them. The locals believe that the god of the afterlife, Mae, sat at the foot of the lake and stored all the souls of the deceased there.

The lakes at Kelimutu are named for where the god sorted them, with one being for the souls of the old, another lake for those who died young, and the third for shamen or soothsayers.

The three lakes are called Tiwu ata Mbupu (Lake of Old People), Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Lake of Young Men & Women), and Tiwu Ata Polo (Enchanted Lake).

Do know it’s a bit of a trek up, as the craters are located at 1690m altitude.

How To Get To Kelimutu

Kelimutu 3-Color Crater Lakes is most typically visited via a 2-day / 1-night guided tour.

The tours usually start from Ende Airport in Flores, where you can take a short flight from Labuan Bajo Airport. Kelimutu is located on the far side of Flores from Labuan Bajo, and very few travelers choose to drive the distance, instead opting to fly.

14. Visit Some Of The Amazing Waterfalls In Flores: Cunca Wulang, Oenesu

Flores isn’t as known for its waterfalls as Bali is, but that can be a good thing! When I visited  Cunca Wulang  waterfall in Flores we were the  only ones there  and had it all to ourselves!

How To Get To Cunca Wulang Waterfall

Cunca Wulang is only about a 1-hour drive outside of the town of Labuan Bajo, Flores. But, once you leave the main road there are no signs (and no lights!) so I recommend taking a tour or going with a local guide.

A group of travelers poses for a photo with their backs to the camera at the viewpoint at Kelor Island.

15. Take In The View At Kelor Island

Kelor Island is only 15 minutes by boat outside of Labuan Bajo, Flores. It’s usually the first stop you’ll take on any Komodo Boat Tour.

Kelor Island doesn’t look like much from the dock, but it has an  amazing  viewpoint you can reach via a 10-minute trek to the top!

The view from the top of Kelor Island honestly looks like a screensaver –  it’s perfect .

There’s also a nice coral reef you can visit right off Kelor Island by snorkeling. While snorkeling there I spotted a pufferfish! The first I had ever seen in the wild.

Map of Komodo, Lombok, & Bali showing where Komodo Island is located in Indonesia.

Where Is Flores Island Located?

This is a little confusing – Many of the main attractions in Flores are technically in the Komodos, which are part of the East Nusa Tenggara Indonesian province.

East Nusa Tenggara is a Province of Indonesia (kinda like a State in the USA), and Flores is an island within that province. So, when people talk about East Nusa Tenggara, they’re talking about the 566 islands that compromise that province  including  the main island of Flores.

The other islands in East Nusa Tenggara include all of the islands in Komodo National Park, like Rinca, Kelor, Kanawa, Komodo, etc, as well as the larger island of Sumba, and part of the island Timor.

East Nusa Tenggara lies far east of the island of Bali, where most international travelers start their journey through Indonesia.

In between East Nusa Tenggara and Bali are the islands of Sumbawa, Lombok, and the Gili Islands.

How to Get To Flores From Bali

Since there are multiple other islands in between them, the only direct way to get from Bali to Flores is by flying.

Direct flights run multiple times a day from Denpasar Airport in Bali and Labuan Bajo Airport in Flores and are only around $50 each way.

The flight takes 1 hour and you get an amazing view of the islands from the plane!

the ferry from Bali to the Gili Islands and Lombok is the first step to take for a Komodo Cruise from Lombok to Flores.

Taking A Boat Tour From Bali To Flores (Komodo)

If you’re okay with being a little bit uncomfortable, the “Backpackers Komodo Cruise” runs between the islands of Lombok & Flores, after sailing through Komodo National Park, twice a week on Sundays and Wednesdays.

The Backpackers’ Komodo Cruise is the perfect add-on to a Bali itinerary because you take a 🚢  Fast Boat   from Bali to the Gili Islands and spend a few days there, and then the cruise tour guide arranges your transport from the Gilis to the departure port in Lombok for the cruise.

This being said, the Backpackers’ Komodo Cruise is NOT luxurious – you’re sleeping on a mat with 30 other people, there’s no AC, and the food is rough. But while it’s not for everyone, it is a lot of fun!

At the end of the tour, the Budget Komodo Cruise still drops you off in Labuan Bajo, Flores, so you still need to make at least one flight regardless.

Labuan Bajo Guide

Labuan Bajo is a port city on Flores Island, and it is the gateway to Komodo National Park. Labuan Bajo is where you will most likely be starting or finishing your trip before flying back to Bali.

Labuan Bajo is a sleepy port city, but it’s a great break from the hustle of larger cities in Bali – plus there’s a ton to do from sailing Komodo to exploring the island of Flores overland.

Where To Eat In Labuan Bajo

After a lot of trial and error, my favorite cafe in Labuan Bajo (where I’m sitting and writing this post right now) is Bacarita Cafe. It’s in the center of town, kind of hidden above the Starbucks.

They do great coffee, western, and Indonesian food, there’s wifi, and the prices are really good!

I also loved eating at the Labuan Bajo fish market come nightfall. Lots of fish vendors line up their stalls and you order whole fish, which they then grill or fry fresh to order and serve with rice and sambal. My favorite was the grilled squid!

Read on to find out how to travel in Flores, Indonesia when you have only one week or less to travel the island after the Komodo Island boat trip.

Flores, Indonesia is the final stop of the Komodo boat trip  (this is the company I recommend), although most struggle with what to do after the cruise. They’re unsure what to do in Flores upon arrival, and unsure if they have enough time to travel in Flores.

Many people go on this boat trip to swim with whale sharks, experience sleeping on the deck, making friends from all over and, of course, see Komodo dragons. But what travelers don’t realize is that the island they land on is so worth exploring, even if you don’t have time to see it all.

In this travel guide to Flores, Indonesia, I’ll be sharing what to do on the island if you only have a short period of time. I’ll be giving you info I wish I had, like how to travel in Flores and outlining a one-week itinerary.

Table of Contents

How to Get to Flores, Indonesia

The fastest and easiest way to get to Flores is to fly. The island actually has several airports, but Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo has the most connections and cheapest flights.

This post is aimed for those that arrived to Flores on the Komodo Island boat trip coming from Lombok . (Although, of course anyone can make use of my one-week itinerary in Flores.) While the journey is much more important than the destination for most travelers choosing this trip, the destination is pretty impressive too.

If you are arriving in Flores on the Komodo boat trip, you’ll arrive in the harbor at Labuan Bajo.

How to Travel in Flores, Indonesia

Travel in Indonesia isn’t always easy, and traveling in Flores is especially difficult. Coming from other Indonesian islands like Java, Bali and Lombok, I was surprised to find how hard it is to travel in Flores.

It’s more difficult to find a scooter or motorbike rental in Flores. There’s only one, windy main road that’s not always in the best condition. And much of the island is remote and undeveloped.

It’s not impossible to travel here, however. It just requires a bit of planning.

Traveling Flores, Indonesia by Motorbike

If you’re going to rent a motorbike in Flores, I’d recommend getting one in Labuan Bajo. It’s pricey, but it’s actually the cheapest price I found in Flores.

At my hostel in Labuan Bajo, they arranged a scooter for 80k per day. Having rented bikes for 50k in Bali and Lombok, I thought I could get cheaper elsewhere. But my hostel in Ruteng quoted 100k, and my homestay in Bajawa quoted 150k!

So if you’re planning to travel in Flores by motorbike, rent one in Labuan Bajo.

Make sure that you give yourself more time than expected to get from one place to another, as you’ll likely have to go slow on the winding roads. I saw a few accidents on the road (including my bus causing a motorist to fall), so make sure you’re being extra safe, especially when going around tight corners.

That being said, renting a motorbike and driving across Flores is the highlight of most people’s trips, so don’t be dissuaded! If you have good weather and are a confident rider, go for it! It will be much easier and cheaper to access remote areas, and you’ll save time on trying to find transport (which occupied much of my time in Flores).

Traveling Flores, Indonesia by Bus

Because I arrived in Flores at the beginning of rainy season and the weather wasn’t great, I opted for the bus. I’m glad I did, as the windy roads with bits of rocks and trees would be so much worse in the pouring rain and the resulting flooded streets.

But getting a bus wasn’t as cheap as I expected (about 120K to get from one city to another), and it was quite difficult to find info on it. I couldn’t find much online, so here’s what you need to know.

Gunung Mas is the bus company I went with, as it was the one recommended by all the accommodation that I stayed in.

Gunung Mas bus in Flores

They have an office in Labuan Bajo, so it’s easy to get your ticket. However, the office is located far from the center so it would be easiest just to give them a message or call (you can Whatsapp them at +62 852 3932 2000).

They also have an office in Ruteng and it’s in the center of town (right next door to my accommodation, ChaCha Dormitory) so it’s easiest to just head there for a ticket.

They do not have an office in Bajawa, so the only way to get picked up there is to get the driver’s phone number (I got it from the office in Ruteng) and call to see if there’s space on the bus. If there is, you’ll get picked up on the side of the road. This is how I got back to Ruteng from Bajawa. It was quite stressful, since I had to wait for almost 2 hours, unsure if the bus would actually come.

Traveling Flores, Indonesia by Shared Taxi

Another way to travel throughout Flores is to go by a shared taxi. It’s a cheap alternative to traveling in a private car, and you’ll share a car with others traveling in the same direction as you. It was only slightly more expensive than the bus.

Or, you might get lucky and get the car to yourself if no one else is interested in a ride. This happened to me, but I would have much preferred the bus, to be honest. The driver was going super slow in populated places as he was trying to get more customers, so it took an extra few hours to get from Ruteng to Bajawa.

Traveling Flores, Indonesia on a Tour

The easiest (but also most expensive) way to travel in Flores is to take a tour . Especially if you’re low on time in Flores, it might be worth not needing to deal with the difficult modes of transportation on the island and also have the logistics sorted out for you.

But because Flores is a bit off the beaten path and not as developed as other islands in Indonesia, there aren’t too many options. This highly-rated tour is the only one departing from Labuan Bajo that I found online.

What to do after the Komodo boat trip

Most people on my boat just spent a few days in Labuan Bajo and flew onwards. It’s not because they didn’t want to travel Flores, but because they didn’t think that they had time.

Flores is a big island without much infrastructure for easy travel (pretty much just one road cutting across the mountainous island), so time is necessary if you want to see all of Flores.

But if you do have a bit of time, after the Komodo boat trip you should explore the island that the cruise ends on. If you only have a few days or one week to spare, read on for the itinerary I created for my own travels in Flores.

How Many Days Do You Need to Travel in Flores, Indonesia

If you want to travel the entirety of Flores, Indonesia, you have to dedicate about two weeks , especially if you want to return back to Labuan Bajo to catch an international flight off the island.

And many people who do the Komodo Island boat trip want to return to Lombok or other Indonesian islands. Since Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo has the cheapest flights, many want to end their trip in Flores in the same city where they stared. In this case, a roundtrip journey to anywhere else in Flores is necessary.

In my opinion, the only way you can travel across Flores in just one week is if you take an organized tour and if you travel the island one way (i.e. fly out from a different airport on the other side of the island).

I traveled in Flores for about one week , but I only made it about halfway through Flores before heading back to Labuan Bajo. Although I didn’t get to see the whole island, I’m happy I got to see and experience at least some of this welcoming and beautiful island.

It is definitely worth it to travel outside of Labuan Bajo. You just need a bit of time and the energy and adventurous spirit for it!

So, if you have some time to spare after the Komodo boat trip, I think it’s definitely worth staying in Flores a few days longer and trying to see at least some of it.

Here’s what my itinerary to travel in Flores looked like, which allowed me to see some of Flores, Indonesia points of interest in just one week .

P.S. I highly recommend reading Flores: A Glimpse of the People and Culture to enhance your visit to Flores. You’ll learn a lot about the places you’ll visit on this itinerary.

One-Week Itinerary for Travel in Flores, Indonesia

Labuan Bajo

Day 1: Arrive in Labuan Bajo

You’ll reach Labuan Bajo in the afternoon, just after your last stop of the trip and a final lunch. Go check into your accommodation first. The most popular options on my boat were the two hostels: Seaesta (pretty expensive, but quite fancy) and La Boheme (my choice—not only cheaper, but really nice staff, colorful and welcoming space, and more of backpacker feel).

Then, spend the rest of your day resting from the boat trip and exploring Labuan Bajo. The marina and Puncak Waringin are both nice places to watch sunset.

And finally, enjoy some Western food for dinner, since you’re probably missing it after a few days on the boat.

You’ll also want to get your transport to Ruteng for the next day sorted out (see my tips in the transportation section above). Unless you want to travel Flores by scooter. In that case, organize a scooter or motorbike for the following day so that you don’t waste time.

Ruteng Old Church

Day 2: Travel to Ruteng

After breakfast, either get on your scooter or bus and drive up to Ruteng.

Drive from Labuan Bajo to Ruteng: 127 kms (roughly 4 hours, but probably more depending on stops, traffic and road conditions)

The drive is mostly through the mountains, and you’ll have tons of stunning views. If you’re on a scooter, you’ll likely be stopping a lot for pictures. If you’re traveling by bus, get a window seat and have your camera ready.

Also, a popular stop between the two cities is Wae Rebo Village. If you have a scooter and stop here, add an extra day onto your itinerary. You have to hike to the village, and your entry into it includes accommodation.

I almost did this, but I’m glad I didn’t. It’s not cheap, and from what I heard, it’s no longer the experience it once was before it got commercialized. And, as you’ll see in this one-week itinerary through Flores, you’ll have other chances to visit a traditional village in Flores.

When you arrive in Ruteng, I recommend staying at Chacha . In fact, it’s worth visiting Ruteng just to stay at Chacha!

Cha Cha dormitory in Ruteng

Chacha is a hostel in the home of the kindest family ever. The couple running it does so much to make you feel welcomed, and I’ve never felt so at home at any other hostel.

They have a restaurant out front, and the food is honestly the best I’ve had in not just Flores, but all of Indonesia. The breakfast was so filling and delicious—the chicken porridge was my favorite.

After the Komodo boat trip and the bus ride over to Ruteng, this is the perfect place to relax for the day. You’ll have either fellow travelers or the family members and their friends to chat to.

Day 3: Ruteng Day Trip

Today you’ll explore the area around Ruteng. You can get a tour arranged from Chacha (they’ll be more than happy to help you out with whatever else you might need).

Or, if you have a motorbike, or want to rent one, here’s what to visit yourself:

First stop: Todo Village

Todo Village

This traditional village is a cheaper and easier one to visit than Wae Rebo.

You are given traditional clothes worn by the village’s royal family to enter the village. Then, you attend a ceremony conducted by the village elder. It’s meant to welcome you to the village and asking the ancestors for your protection.

It feels a bit touristy, with women selling their woven wares, and the buildings are actually replicas, since they had deteriorated and were knocked down decades ago. But it’s still a village worth visiting.

Todo Village has a lot of history, and it was the most important village in Manggarai, so it’s interesting to visit this site.

Second stop: Spiderweb rice fields

Spiderweb rice fields in Cancar, Flores

The rice fields, located in Cancar, look like spiderwebs. This is because of how they were split up to separate each family’s portion of the land. You can go up to a viewpoint to see them from above, and it looks so cool!

There is a small fee to access this viewpoint, and it’s totally worth it.

Third stop: Air Terjun Tengkulese

It’s not easy getting to this one. A car can only go so far through the village, so you’ll have to walk quite a bit.

But it is admittedly a very impressive waterfall. It’s absolutely giant and two-tiered, and the walk to it is very beautiful. You’ll pass a rural village and impressive rice fields, with stunning, lush scenery all around.

cruise flores indonesia

Be prepared to climb an unstable ladder to get close to the powerful waterfall, and to pay a small fee to your local guides (mostly children).

Fourth stop: Hobbit Cave

While there isn’t a whole lot to see, this is such a fascinating place to visit, and one of the best reasons to visit Ruteng.

In 2004, archeologists discovered a yet undiscovered species of humans: Homo floresiensis . The bones found were 60,000 to 100,000 years old, and these small humans were only around 106 cm (around 3 feet) tall.

You’ll find a small museum detailing the discovery and facts about these little humans, and you can go inside the cave.

Unless you’re there during an excavation (they were halted for a few years due to Covid, but usually occur annually), all you’ll see is a (at first glance, unimpressive) cave. But it’s a place where an important scientific discovery occurred, and so it’s worth going just to soak that in!

At the end of your day trip around Ruteng, head back to Chacha for some socializing or relaxing—it’s great for both!

Day 4: Travel to Bajawa

Today is another travel day, and it’s not an easy one. The road to get from Ruteng to Bajawa is tough. If you’re low on time or prefer to relax, you can go back to Luang Prabang today. You’ll have to skip Bajawa, but at least you got to explore the area around Ruteng (and experience a warm welcome at Chacha!).

But if you’re up for more adventure, head onwards to Bajawa.

Drive from Ruteng to Bajawa: 136 kms (roughly 4 hours, but probably more depending on stops, traffic and road conditions—it took my driver 6 hours because he was going super slow to look for more customers)

A bus leaves from Ruteng to Bajawa at 7am and 1 pm. You can buy a ticket from the Gunung Mas bus office (next door to Chacha).

If you have a motorbike or scooter, be careful on the sharp and numerous turns of the road, and enjoy the freedom.

Otherwise, you can get a taxi or shared taxi to Bajwa.

I personally enjoyed Ruteng more than Bajawa, which I didn’t find too appealing of a city. But don’t worry; there is plenty to do around Bajwa.

On your first day, I’d recommend going to Wolobobo Viewpoint . From here, you can watch sunset with a view of the volcano, Mount Inerie.

Mount Inerie and Bena Village

Day 5: Bajawa and return to Ruteng

If you’re up for it, hike up Mount Inerie for sunrise. I personally didn’t do it due to a storm, but a fellow traveler highly recommended it. You’ll need a guide to hike up (no paths), but you can arrange one at your homestay.

What you shouldn’t miss while in Bajawa is Bena Village and Malanage Hot Springs .

Bena Village was my favorite traditional village in Flores. It was different from the villages in neighboring Manggarai (Bena is part of Ngada) and was fascinating to learn about. And it helps that the village is surrounded by stunning scenery (including a view of Mount Inerie).

Malanage Hot Springs is one of the most interesting hot springs I’ve ever visited, and I’ve been spoiled by Iceland . It’s a small natural pool under which two rivers meet: one hot and one cold. Because of this, one side of the pool has cold water while the other has hot water. Sitting in the middle feels so weird!

Getting back to Ruteng is tricky if you want to take the bus. There’s no Gunung Mas bus station in this city, and I was lucky to have caught it. I got the driver’s number from the office in Ruteng and had someone call him. This was the only way to see if he could take me, as Bajawa is not an official stop. I had to wait on the side of the road for almost two hours, unsure if he’d even come.

It was really stressful, so I’d recommend trying a different transportation method.

If you have a scooter, plan to have enough daylight to get back to Ruteng. And if you’re taking shared taxi,  ask your accommodation ( Cinnamon Guesthouse or Kristian Homestay  are the most popular backpacker options) for help.

Alternative Onwards Journey

Alternatively, if you have the time, you can keep going onwards and travel the whole island. From Bajwa, it’s 3 hours up to Riung (17 Islands Park) or 5-6 hours to Ende and Moni (Kelimutu, the beautiful three colored lakes volcano), and then from there, another 3-4 hours to Maumere : the end of Flores. You can fly back to Labuan Bajo from Maumere, or fly to another Indonesia island (although tickets were cheaper from Labuan Bajo).

Day 6: Ruteng to Labuan Bajo

But it was really nice waking up in Chacha again. Because of how welcoming the hostel is, it truly felt like returning home. I was genuinely sad to leave.

I spent this morning going to a local school to speak English to the students, having gotten invited by a schoolteacher who I met at Cha Cha (he said he tries to recruit tourists staying at this hostel often). And after, I got a tour of the local market and visited this vibrant city’s many churches and cathedral.

I caught a bus back to Ruteng in the early afternoon, and then spent the evening enjoying Western food and playing pool at La Boheme.

Alternatively, you can catch a morning bus from Ruteng and fly out of Flores on Day 6.

La Boheme Bajo

Day 7: Travel Onwards

On your final day in Flores, you may have time to explore more of this surprisingly nice city. But even if you have an early morning flight, know that you have visited a lot in just one week in Flores.

Hopefully, despite this super busy one-week itinerary traveling through Flores, you’ll get a chance to meet and befriend some of the lovely people who call this island home and learn about their culture. If nothing else, you’ll definitely be seeing the beautiful scenery Flores offers.

So while it’s not the easiest island in Indonesia to travel, it certainly is possible to travel Flores in just one week following this itinerary. There’s much more to see on Flores, but this will offer you a little taste of this island.

Some might find this one-week Flores itinerary too fast, and admittedly it did feel a bit rushed. But I don’t regret attempting it. This one week was among the highlights of my time in Indonesia, and I look forward to returning to this welcoming island one day.

Consider exploring Flores using this itinerary if you have a week to spare after arriving in Labuan Bajo after the Komodo boat trip!

Port Pulau Flores Island Indonesia cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Pulau Flores Island Indonesia, Larantuka-Ende-Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Pulau Flores Island is one of Lesser Sunda Islands located in Indonesia's eastern half. The island is part of East Nusa Tenggara province and has land area approx 13540 km2 (5230 mi2) and population around 1,84 million. The largest port town is Maumere (population around 55,000).

Flores Island is to the east of Komodo and Sumbawa and west of Alor Islands and Lembata . Timor is southeast. To the south (across Sumba Strait) is Sumba Island and beyond the Flores Sea (to the north) is Sulawesi.

Among all Indonesian islands, Flores is ranked 10th most populous and 10th largest. Its west coast is one of the few sites (aside from Komodo Island) where Komodo dragons (up to 3 m long lizards) are found in the wild. It is part of UNESCO's Komodo National Park (also including the islands Komodo and Rinca ). Kelimutu National Park is the island's 2nd national park preserving endangered species.

The most popular tourist attraction on Pulau Flores is its 1639-m (5377-ft) Kelimutu volcano (near Moni Town) featuring 3 colored lakes. These crater lakes in the caldera are fed by volcanic gas sources, which makes the water highly acidic. These lakes change colors (red through green and blue) on an irregular basis, depending on the water's oxidation state.

Diving and snorkeling locations are found along the island's northern coast, the most popular being Riung and Maumere. Sadly, the coral reefs were practically destroyed as fishermen use bombs to fish, locals sell shells to tourists, plus the devastating effects of the 7,8 Richter magnitude Flores earthquake and tsunami (December 12, 1992).

In addition to tourism, the island's major economic activities include seaweed production, agriculture and fishing. Flores is among Indonesia's newest coffee production territories. Previously, most Coffea Arabica from Flores Island was blended mixed with other origins. Currently, demand for this kind of coffee is growing due to its heavy body and sweet (floral, woody and chocolate) notes.

Most cruise ships to Pulau Flores berth at Larantuka Dock (on island's eastern coast). Some ships may dock at Ende (on island's southern coast).

If your course is set on a Bali cruise, you can look for most sailings running from March through September. Climate data listed above is from Denpasar, Bali.

What Travelers Say About Their Indonesia Cruise

Fantastic boat with an amazing crew. What a great adventure exploring the small islands of Indonesia. The snorkeling was the best I've experienced anywhere in the world.

The quality of the guide, the crew and the ship were far above our expectations. The itinerary was very enjoyable. The early trip to Komodo island was very rewarding and the timing and variety of snorkeling was excellent.

The trip overall was unforgettable. One of the best parts was not having to figure out every step of the trip after/during planning a wedding. Knowing that AdventureSmith was in charge of the major details and 10 days of our trip, as well as internal flights were all organized was an important load-lifted off our shoulders.

Great guides together with the very enthusiastic and helpful crew made it a great voyage. If you like small boat cruising and snorkeling, this is the trip for you with the unique Komodo Dragons as a special plus.

We went to untouched places that we didn't know existed in Indonesia. We were able to still see all the hot spots in Bali on our own before we took this cruise, but this offered something entirely different than any of our friends had ever experienced in Indonesia.

Overall trip was amazing. Absolutely no issues logistically. Unless you have months on your hands to stumble around foreign countries and really figure it out on your own, a quality specified travel agency like Adventuresmith is absolutely necessary for a trip of this caliber.

Fantastic boat with an amazing crew. What a great adventure exploring the small islands of Indonesia. We most enjoyed Rinca to see Komodo dragons! The snorkeling was the best I've experienced anywhere in the world.

Meals Review

Great food and great crew!

Traveler Advice

Sea was a bit choppy the first couple of days, but not much you can do about that!

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

They helped us organize all our flights.  Even reached out to check in on us when there was an airport closure due to volcanic activity.

The quality of the guide, the crew and the ship were far above our expectations. The itinerary was very enjoyable. The early trip to Komodo island was very rewarding and the timing and variety of snorkeling was excellent. Also really enjoyed the trip to the active volcano and exploring the local shipbuilding village there. The trip to Rinca was short, I thought we could have been given the option to spend some more time there.

Accommodations Review

The ship was beautiful and kept in excellent shape by the crew. A memorable experience to sail on Katharina. My only complaint was that the sails were not able to be put up.

The chef on Katharina was INCREDIBLE. Loved the food and the variety. Rotation of meals over the week was also highly enjoyable.

Crew & Guides Review

Ari far exceeded our expectations. He knew so much about the local culture, the history of the area, the boat and the wildlife given his more than 20 years of experience. He also made sure that we had the best guides wherever we went. In addition, he was professional, friendly, approachable and organized.

We had excellent communication with our AdventureSmith contact Nick. He answered all of our questions in a timely fashion and we were well prepared for the trip.

We had an excellent trip aboard the Ombak Putih for our honeymoon. One of the best parts was not having to figure out every step of the trip after/during planning a wedding. Knowing that AdventureSmith was in charge of the major details and 10 days of our trip, as well as internal flights were all organized was an important load-lifted off our shoulders. The trip overall was unforgettable. Misool was beautiful- loved the jellyfish lake and cave exploration. The snorkeling, beach and view of Wayag was just idyllic and my favorite place of the trip. The oyster farm we visited was neat but the bay we stayed in wasn't the best- filled with plastic and felt less remote and beautiful with the oyster farm surrounding us. Loved getting to know the knowledgeable, like-minded travelers aboard. One of the best parts of the trip! This trip had a lot of snorkeling, which was great, but could have had a little more variety in activities. I know this was the action and adventure departure, but it was unclear that that just meant more snorkeling.

The Ombak Putih is a rad ship! We felt like we were pirates exploring the islands. I also feel that the traditional pinisi boats (as there were a few around) just fit right into the landscape, whereas the more yachty or modern boats seemed out of place.

Lots of variety. Loved the lemongrass flavorings. Could have more Indonesian foods, felt odd seeing a lot of red meat, cheese and smoked salmon when we can tell these items had to travel far to get there.

Great people. Fun to be around. Could fine tune their presentations and become stronger speakers for the evening presentations, but did a great job making everything run smoothly and keep us occupied.

Transportation Review

Our internal flights were arranged for us, as well as transfers to and from the ship which made our Indonesia domestic travel flawless.

The packing lists, online forms and the arrangements made were all excellent and timely. My friends and family would love to experience the magic of small ship travel that AdventureSmith offers.

If you get cold in the water bring a wet-suit top at least. The water is warm, but for us who tend to be cold just a little extra layer can make it so much more enjoyable. Also some people had long, thin rash-guard pants which were great protection against the annoying sea lice and jellyfish that we would encounter.

  • Sailing Indonesia: Jewels of Raja Ampat
  • Ombak Putih

Great guide together with the very enthusiastic and helpful crew made it a great voyage. The snorkeling was excellent; many fishes together with turtles, rays and manta rays. [We also enjoyed] seeing the Komodo dragons. The fellow travelers were a very nice diverse group who mixed well.

Cabins were small but quite adequate. Food was very good and the bar prices very reasonable.

The food was delicious and there was always a choice of fish, meat and non meat dishes.

Ari made the trip a great success. Very knowledgeable and experienced. Organized everything extremely well.

If you like small boat cruising and snorkeling, this is the trip for you with the unique Komodo Dragons as a special plus.

What a trip and amazing ship! It was a special way to see Indonesia. We went to untouched places that we didn't know existed in Indonesia. Lots of snorkeling. Visited so many remote villages and had the children hold our hands as they took us around their town. We were able to still see all the hot spots in Bali on our own before we took this cruise, but this offered something entirely different than any of our friends had ever experienced in Indonesia and we feel like we really saw a "real" view of the country.

The Ombak Putih is a special ship. We were in awe of all the beautiful wooden touches - rare to find in the modern ships of today! Stairs are on the steeper side on the ship, so we made good use of the railings when at sea.

We ate like kings. Lots of healthy options, salads and fresh fish, but many treats and temptations to overeat too. A bit too many fried options for my taste, but others on board enjoyed and much was authentic to Indonesia - lots fried banana for snacks! 24/7 coffee and tea much appreciated and honor system tracking to grab your own drinks aboard and pay for at the end.

The crew was friendly and helpful, always with a smoothie ready when we came back on board in the heat of the day. We loved our guides Arie and Kees, who provided the perfect combination of education and adventure with their lectures and their snorkeling skills.

We would never have found this ship, or chosen this unique route, if it wasn't for AdventureSmith's advice and recommendation! Happy to have them as our sounding board for how to access the world's remote locations by small ship (we've done 3 trips). Their recommendations for us have always been spot on.

If you like to drink, take advantage of the opportunity to bring your own booze aboard to make your own cocktails! Bring a short wet suit or heavier rash guard top and tights as the water was on the cold side in certain locations.

  • Sailing Indonesia: The Undiscovered Frontier

Overall trip was amazing. Absolutely no issues logistically. We had a couple of days in Bali on our own prior to boarding the ship which made it easier to adapt to the weather, time change etc. SUP-ing into isolated islands with no one else around. Visiting remote villages that hadn’t seen any tourists since the last time our boat was there a year  ago. The genuine excitement of the kids wanting to show us around there village and home. The uniqueness of this trip was what really made the experience. It is a true adventure, there are no guarantees. Every day the group is coming up with plans based on weather, sea conditions, time frames, local advice and recommendations etc. You must be flexible and able to coordinate with the group, but this is what made it so fun. Of course the guides and the Captain had the final say. You could do this trip multiple times and never have the same experience (which some people on board had). There is a rough itinerary, but there are so many cool options and dynamic environment that it could easily change. Marine life, snorkeling, birds and komodo dragons. Truly Epic. Some people commented on a little too much time at sea. I enjoy boats and moving around but I would agree that it seemed a little hurried in 10-12 days to do the route we did. A few more days would allow for some flexibility and spending time at the more desirable locations, especially if we encountered inclement weather. [ AdventureSmith note that the itinerary was extended to 14 days in duration after this traveler's trip. ] We had a good group, however group dynamics on a small boat can play a role in activities. I personally would have liked a few more adventurous off boat excursions, however we did stay busy with fun activities daily.  No bad experiences.

The ship (Ombak Putih) was a beautiful, traditional, completely dialed Indonesian sailing vessel. The quarters below were not huge, but very clean, comfortable and as beautiful as the rest of the ship. Just the amount of hard work that went into this boat was breathtaking. We were lucky to have a small group (9), so there was plenty of deck space around to relax and not feel cramped. Even though this boat was equipped to sail if need be, we motored 99% of the time. We sailed 1 afternoon for fun, but there was no way we were going to cover the ground (almost 1000 miles) sailing the whole time.  Motor noise/exhaust was no issue at any time, night or day.

I couldn’t even think of anything I would change food wise. Amazing. Every stop we made, or local fisherman we saw, fresh fish and local goods were acquired. No food illness, water was processed on the boat etc. Beer was very reasonably priced. Cheaper than Mexico.

Unless you have months on your hands to stumble around foreign countries and really figure it out on your own, a quality specified travel agency like Adventuresmith is absolutely necessary for a trip of this caliber. Having firsthand knowledge of the ins and outs of small ship/remote world travel you’re in good hands. All connections and logistics where handled and everything operated smoothly. No problems.  Having spent so much of my life on the ocean, I love boats, marine life and accessing coastlines via a small boat or ship.  To me it really is the best way to travel. Whether you tie up in a large bustling port city, or anchor off a remote beach, it’s a whole different perspective than land travel. I look forward to another amazing boat trip with Adventuresmith in the future.

Ari was our main guide. He was exceptional. An Indonesian and Sulawesi local. Though we had people from all over the world on the boat, English was primarily spoken and Ari was absolutely fluent. No missed communications, or misunderstandings, he was 1 step ahead all the time, with the safety of the group the priority. There were times we didn’t swim, go ashore, or go to certain areas because the Captain and Ari deemed it unsafe, mostly due to ocean conditions. Spending most of my life around the ocean, I understood and respected what they were talking about. This was very comforting to know how attentive they were.  Due to our remoteness on this trip, there was no margin for error or injury.  This isolation became evident not long after we set out, and the crew operated accordingly.  There was no hot dogging or showing off, it was all business.  One instance in particular we were snorkeling around a deep water reef with a lot of current.  We had 2 zodiacs in the water tending to the swimmers.  A large, Rogue dive boat trying to track across the channel started to get swept toward us under full power.  Ari in the zodiac recognize this immediately, drove the zodiac in front of the dive boat and started screaming at the captain.  The boat turned, got swept down current and had to come up the long way to the anchorage.  Without his quick response the boat would have come very close to us.  I was watching it all unfold and would have swam out of the way, but I can’t say that for the rest of the snorkelers, focused on the sea turtles!  Kees was also another exceptional guide.  Having moved to Jakarta from Europe 20 years ago he knew the culture quite well.  His expertise in birding was an eye opener for me.  Most nights he put on informative presentations regarding the next day’s adventures.  Another very smart, professional guide we enjoyed very much.

cruise flores indonesia

Flores, the island given a pretty but incongruous Portuguese name by its 16th-century colonists, has become Indonesia’s Next Big Thing. The serpentine, 670km Trans-Flores Hwy runs the length of the island, skirting knife-edge ridges, brushing by paddy-fringed villages and opening up dozens of areas few tourists explore.

Hi there Just wondering if this tour is available yet. I’m planning a trip mid August.

' src=

Unfortunately the operator who I used to work with is no longer running the program. I don’t have any recommendations for now. Sorry about that! 🙁

' src=

Wondering if this tour still on?

Sorry for the late reply. The tour is not operating at the moment. Cheers!

' src=

I and my wife tried to book in the form but it was impossible. Is it avaliable a cruise from Lombok to Flores (5 days and 4 nights) in the period of 21st July, or 22nd July, or 23rd July.

Thanks, Kind regards, Massimo Alessandrini

Hello, does the tour take place in April 2023?

The tour is not running at the moment, not sure in April, but mostly still off. Sorry! Hope you find something else and have a great time in Indonesia.
