Agnes Obel on the journey back to touring and returning to Australian stages this October

We caught up with Agnes Obel to deep dive into her journey back to live touring, the new changes in her life, and how she is entering her next creative chapter.

Agnes Obel’s musical catalogue is the sort of dreamy journey that is best explored with headphones on, taking the time to dive into all its beauty and intricacies. But when the Danish-born, Berlin-based singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist transforms her music for the live stage, it takes on an entirely new life.

Obel’s catalogue is full of, what you might describe as, peaceful, beautiful, and vivid musical moments – the type of soundscape to soundtrack a cosy evening – while others are darker and more dramatic, but no less poetic.

On the live stage, it is as if Agnes Obel and her decade-plus-spanning catalogue of music become something completely new – still just as beautiful, as if she is making music with your heartstrings, shaping your emotions – but, when she steps out of her studio, a place where she creates all of her music completely independently, and onto the live stage, where a band of musicians bring their own experiences and musicality and daily life to each of her songs, that something completely new happens.

It is, as she describes in our chat below, how she creates a unique musical experience at every single one of her shows.

Agnes Obel 2022 Australia Tour Dates

She began playing classical piano at the age of five, alongside rock and jazz at school. At 17, she left high school to study music production and sound engineering. It was here that Obel fell in love with the idea of sculpting her own sounds.

Agnes Obel’s atmospheric soundscape and creative boundaries have expanded with each of her four albums. Her first, Philharmonics (2010) – the album that saw her win five awards at the 2011 Danish Music Awards, including Newcomer Of The Year and Album Of The Year – was the perfect introduction to Obel’s mastery of balancing soundscapes that are both sparse and delicate yet densely powerful.

By the time we get to 2020’s Myopia , her cinematic musical experimentation has expanded greatly. She uses traditional instruments like the celesta, mellotron, piano, and viola, but pitches their sounds up or down so they sound like something else entirely. Her vocal is treated much the same, and is multi-layered until Obel sounds more like a choir than the one-person music making wonder she is.

Agnes Obel - Broken Sleep (Official Video)

With inspirations ranging from Erik Satie to Roy Orbison, Claude Debussy to PJ Harvey and Jan Johansson to even Edgar Allan Poe, and a sound that has been described as reminiscent of Kate Bush and Enya, Agnes Obel has well and truly become a household name across Europe.

From her six-times Platinum debut album Philharmonics (2010) to the lingering, haunting Aventine (2013), her concept album about the lack of privacy in the online world, Citizen of Glass (2016), and the deeply introspective Myopia (2020), her piano-driven melodies – that blend classical with pop, folk, rock, electronica, and more – are unmatched.

Here, in Australia, her ethereal vocals, poetic lyrics, and hypnotic soundscapes are well-loved too. This October, she will be returning to our stages for the first time in eight years with a full band of classical musicians in tow.

A few weeks before she began her huge world tour that will eventually bring her back to Australian stages in October, we caught up with Agnes Obel to deep dive into her journey back to live touring, the new changes in her life, and how she is entering her next creative chapter.

We are in the countdown to your upcoming world tour, which starts in Berlin and sees you return to Australia and play your first show in New Zealand before finishing up at the incredible Paris Philharmonic – how are you feeling?

Agnes Obel: “I’m feeling excited. Excited, and curious to see how it’s going to work out. I’m going to tour with a 14-month-old baby, as well, my daughter. I’ve never toured before with a baby and she’s a toddler now.

“I’ve toured every single album, but even compared to those tours, this tour is really long. It’s one leg, two months in one go. We have a little break, and then we go again. Without a baby, this is a long tour, but I’m super excited.

“I’m really curious to hear the music in big rooms again and hear it played live. I’ve been working in my little studio, which is a tiny little room, for the past year, and even while I was pregnant, during the pandemic. I’ve [spent] so [long] in this little cubicle recording. I really want to feel the music that I’m [making’, to see it, in a way, become real and not just inside of my little homemade bubble. I’m really looking forward to that, to see it manifested, and not just an abstract idea in my head.

We are more than a decade on from your debut album, Philharmonics , a record that many fans still hold dear – when preparing for a tour, how do you look on those earlier songs ?

“I feel like it’s such a big part of me, the first album. I’m always okay with playing a few songs from Philharmonics . I think to play a whole album with the whole concert just Philharmonics would be hard for me, but to play a few is okay.

“That first album was really songs I’d written even as a teenager. Some of the songs were written in high school, so it’s almost like part of my DNA – it’s a big part of who I am. They work really well with the new material, but I couldn’t play a whole concert because it would feel like I was forced to become myself as a teenager, almost, and I’m not there anymore.”

You released your most recent album, Myopia, in 2020 and have only been able to prepare to tour it now – while also creating new music. How has this process of creation been for you, moving into the next album cycle while also preparing to tour your previous record?

“It’s super strange. I’ve released three albums where you release it in the Fall after you’ve finished it, and then you go on a long tour after that. I’ve never experienced this before, because I’m already now in the process of writing a new album, and then I’m going on a tour while I’m in this writing/recording mindset.

“It’s very strange for me, but on the other hand, I think it’s a creative opportunity to open myself up a little bit in the process. I have to, so I can play some of the new material and I can use the opportunity to play this material with musicians live. I can also use these big rooms. Some of the shows we will play outside, and there’ll be some theatres to play and to try new material in.

“I think I must immerse to create something. What? I don’t know, because I’ve never done it before, but I’m sure it will push me into something new. I’m quite curious to see what will happen with the new material when I start playing it because I’ve never done this before.”

You’re a one-person-project when you’re recording, and now you’re taking all of this incredible new music and bringing a band into the mix. How do you transform your music from the studio solo project into a big band, big venue experience?

“I very often play with classical musicians because I have some strings and I like classical percussion because I can also play vibraphone and mallet instruments.

“I try to find classical musicians who also play and write their own music. That means they have an ear for improvisation. When you’re coming for rock music or pop music or non-classical music, the way you develop music is more like a band. You don’t have it written down on sheets, but in classical music, there’s a completely different way you approach it.

“When you come from pop, rock, or rhythmic music – as we call it in Denmark – and have to play with classical musicians, you have to find the ones who are open to this freer approach. I don’t like that you start playing music and just have it all in sheets or scores, and it’s like, ‘Here, we start. Here, we do this, and then it ends.’

“It has to be more organic and I want you to hear the people who are playing the music in the pieces, as well. I feel like live music becomes interesting when you feel the musicians playing it, and they’re not just perfect musical robots. That means they have to be open to playing in a more improvised way – listening to it and then developing from that. It’s quite a long process when I start playing live. We’ve already rehearsed a lot and even started last year, playing together to just find each other and finding ways into the music.”

Does that mean that each one of your performances becomes its own unique experience?

“Yeah, that’s a whole idea. Also, sometimes some songs will be considerably slower or faster. I like it myself when I go to a concert and you have a sense of the people playing and where they are that day, in that moment, and you can feel they are being affected by the room and the audience.

“It becomes more energetic or more interactive somehow, like the musicians are responding to the audience, the audience responding to musicians, and that becomes a more unique moment. Everything is so perfect these days. I am very curious about the imperfections because that might be the most human element in the music. I can’t say exactly how each concert will be, but I’m pretty sure it will be different from the one the day before.”

This will be your second tour of Australia – what can audiences expect from these upcoming shows?

“I’m playing with a band. There’s two cellists, one is Australian, but he’s living in Berlin. We have a German classical percussionist, who also plays the flute and saxophone. They are an incredible band. I think they’ll be really good, but I can’t say how it’s going to be.

“Also, it will be after we’ve already played almost 40, 45 shows before. My hope is that I will be able to develop the material and I will be able to play some of the new unreleased music, as well, when I come to Australia. At that time, I would have grown my confidence to be able to start playing the new material.

“My partner, Alex, has developed a light design with small cameras on stage. He has some where he puts small, prism stones in front. He called them prisms, and they move in front of the camera as they’re filming everyone on the stage, and that’s then being projected. It’s a very strange and beautiful, slightly psychedelic light design.”

Agnes Obel - Familiar (Official Video)

What are you most excited about for these upcoming shows? There are a lot of them, and it’s been a long time in the making .

“I am really excited about playing music again, just the playing. What I long for is the feeling where you’re playing and you forget it. It doesn’t always happen. Sometimes, it happens, and then you’re just lost in the moment, you’re just in what you’re doing. This is what I hope for. I love when it happens.

“There’s so many elements, especially with your own music, where you can sit and think, ‘Oh, this didn’t work, but this has to work. Now, we do this. This is too loud,’ or whatever, but I’m hoping that somehow everything will come together and I can get lost in the music and playing with these incredible musicians. This is what I’m looking forward to.

“It sounds almost like I’m talking about a drug, but it’s been such a long time since I’ve played a show, so I don’t even really know how I’m feeling. I just remember after I did my other tours, when I got home, around 9 o’clock when I would normally play a show, that I would get very awake. In a way, I think I missed this, that the body and the mind and everything comes together and becomes working with time, you are just in the present. You’re not in the future. you’re not in the past. This is the best place to be.”

What do you love about making music? What is it about making and performing music that has kept you coming back for so long?

“I really like writing music and just falling in love with what you’re doing. A new idea could be an instrument, a recording, it’s like I fall into something and think, ‘Whoa, this is nice,’ and then it feels like you’re falling in love because you get energised and high, and you think about it all the time. I always keep it a little bit secret for myself. It’s my little wonderful secret that I listen to all the time. This is what I love about making music. “Performance side is different, it feels like a healthy challenge because I don’t see myself as a performer-musician. I feel much more like I’m a recording type of musician, but because I am like that, I think it’s really healthy that I go on tour and perform, and play in front of people and play live music and not keep everything under control. “This is a healthy aspect of doing it for my own creativity, and so I develop and don’t get stuck in my own eccentric ideas of what is good. That’s the challenge in it, but also the challenge of writing new good things. You’re always, in a sense, competing with yourself. You get an idea and then see if you can actually make it. You dream it, ‘I want to make this piece,’ but then you have to see if you actually can do it. That’s a challenge I also like.”

Danish singer and pianist Agnes Obel will be bringing her stunning Aventine record to Australia this November for three special gigs in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. The songstress will be taking some beautiful venues while she’s in the country, but it’s these gorgeous and – in some cases – left-of-centre settings that she’s no stranger to, as she tells us over the phone. I see you were in France for a couple of festivals, how did they go?

It was great! They were all kinds of very different festivals and it was great. I love playing in France, it’s always a really good audience and it had great weather.

You’re about to come somewhere you’ve never played before, which is Australia. We’re really excited to finally get you down here – what does it mean to you to bring your music all the way to Australia?

It’s amazing, I can’t believe I’m coming. I’m really excited. When you say to people, ‘…and then I’m going to Australia’, they’re always like, ‘Wow!’ It sounds really grand, going to Australia. I’m really excited about it.

It is a very long way from home…

It is, but this is also what makes it very exciting. The best tours I’ve been on or the ones I’ve been most excited about, have been the ones where you’re in a totally different timezone and you’re really cut off from home, you know? You can really experience the place without being in touch with home all the time.

Will you get to spend much time in Australia, other than playing shows or are you pretty much just here and then heading off?

We’re going to stay for a week afterwards and just have some holiday time! It’s pretty awesome. We’ve been touring all the time, almost, so this will be our vacation time.

It seems like this like the end of the cycle for this record.

I think so, I think there only a very few other things planned, but I’m going to go home and start recording. I have some other projects I have to start working on, so it’ll be a perfect time to have a little holiday. We have a few things to do in 2015 that have to do with Aventine , because the album has been played a lot in Europe, but there are still some other places we will go with it in 2015. It takes a little bit longer when it is further away and you’ve never been there before.

That’s right! Well, I’m glad we’re finally getting you down here, I listened to Aventine when it came out at the end of last year and it’s a record that, whenever I’m stressed or just feel overloaded by everything, it’s a beautiful record to put on and decompress to.

Oh thank you! That’s great.

Musically for you, does everything start on the piano, at least for the music you’ve done until now?

In most cases. Sometimes I have a melody in my head, so you can’t really say it started on the piano, because maybe I had it in my head and then I played it on the piano! [Laughs] That’s how I do it, but that’s mainly because it’s the best instrument I know. That’s my best instrument, it’s the one I can play the easiest. It’s easier for me to get an idea there, but I’m also aware you tend to also structure things a certain way when you play on the piano, than if you wrote everything on the guitar or another instrument. I really try to, lately, stop doing that and try to work on other instruments, to break away. You tend to become very melodic when you work on piano. It’s something I like, I really like being melodic, but it’s also good for me to see if I can do it another way.

Are there any instruments you look at and go, ‘That’s just too difficult, I don’t even want to go there’? If you could just pick up any instrument and play it, are there any instruments that you’d love to explore and play with?

I tried to play the saxophone when I was a kid and it was just too much, it sounded too bad and it wasn’t worth it! [Laughs] I played flute because you have to play flute before you play the saxophone and I don’t know…I liked that it sounded good and I was lucky to learn piano very early. I never remember a period where it really sounded horrible, it’s also a very accessible instrument. The saxophone just sounded so bad! I didn’t have the patience for it. I would also love to play a string instrument, but it sounds really horrible, you know? [Laughs]

A bad violin can be very painful!

Especially violin, because it’s so high and I don’t think I’d have ever gotten over that fact that it sounds like an animal getting tortured! [Laughs]

I noticed on your records that you’ve got quite a bit of violin in there. Do you have violinists who you tour with?

Yeah, I’m touring with two different violinists, who have had time and who have wanted to do it. I’m playing with a wonderful violinist from Canada, called Mika Posen , she’s the one playing on the album. Then over this summer, I’ve played with a girl from Baltimore, she’s a wonderful violinist called Sophie Bayot . Mika is the one I’ve been working the most with, she’s the one who’s playing on the album, we worked out all the arrangements together. Anne Müller is the cello player, so Mika Posen and Anne Müller have been the ones working mostly on this album with me and with touring and the arrangements live.

Will they be coming out to Australia with you? Who’s getting to make the trip down with you?

I actually don’t know! I know Anne is 100%, but I don’t know. These girls are solo artists themselves, so it’s always a little bit tricky and I always like to play with people who make music themselves and are very creative and we can develop things together, especially in the live context. Where it’s different from the album and it will grow into something else. If you want that, it’s people who are very busy and have their own things, often. I can’t say right now.

Fair enough! We’ll be interested to see who makes it down with you, then! You’re playing some incredible venues in Australia and I imagine you’ve gotten to play some pretty amazing venues over the years in Europe and around North America – do you have any highlights, in terms of places you’ve had the opportunity to perform in?

I think I’ve been pretty lucky with playing a lot of strange places! I played in a cave once, in Switzerland, that was pretty awesome. Like, inside a cave. On this tour this summer, we played in these big ampitheatres outside and it’s really special in these outside ampitheatres, because it looks like people are wallpaper. From the stage, it looks like they’re stacked on top of each other and they look so strange! Also, they’re not sitting on normal chairs or anything so it literally looks like they’re stacked on each other! The sound, when they’re clapping, it feels like they’re just in front of you! I’d never heard that before and that was pretty awesome.

That might even be a bit distracting while you’re performing?

Yeah, it felt very close! I was trying to figure out where to look, because we were surrounded, but it was really wonderful and completely different from anything else. I also love playing in churches and in small clubs, where it’s very close. If it’s a good PA in the room and the room is nice, then you can also get a very intense sound inside. I’m really into good-sounding places – certain churches are difficult to place, because the reverb time is too long and other churches are perfect, for some reason. I don’t even really know why, but they just sound amazing, no matter what you do or sound. When you play a place like that, you feel so lucky and you feel like you want to record there. I’ve played a lot of different ones, I’m pretty lucky.

It must be pretty special when you sit down and you know the acoustics are just perfect for you, because it doesn’t always happen.

No, no, no! [Laughs] It gives us a lot of freedom, but it can also be too much because sometimes the PA is not put up in the right way or it’s not the right PA for the room, so there is a lot of things to consider – how the audience is seated, etc. When this tour is over, I’m going to rent this church for a weekend and record piano in there, because it sounds amazing.

That would be amazing, to hear an album recorded in a church from you.

Yeah! I know a lot of people who are doing it and I think it’s because you get the natural reverb, it’s not an artificial reverb. I think it would be really cool.

Most definitely! I really appreciate your time, I hope all the shows go well for you. I know you’re going to the US in a few days, so I hope that treats you well and they’re a couple of my favourite venues as well. 930 Club and the Bowery Ballroom – that should be a pretty special few days ahead!

Thank you! I’ll see you maybe in Sydney in November!

Agnes Obel, born October 28th 1980, is a singer-songwriter from Denmark. Her classical and folk crossover music earned her five prizes at the Danish Music Awards in November 2011.

Obel had the privilege of growing up around music, as her father would love to collect strange objects and instruments such as the xylophone and even a double bass. Her mother was a pianist and would play Bartók and Chopin on the piano. Obel naturally took to the piano at a very young age. Her teacher told her that she shouldn’t play what she doesn’t like, so she just played what she liked. As a musical artist, Obel discovered Jan Johansson’s works, which were pivotal to her understanding of creating music, especially in an individual way. It was in 1987 that Obel joined her first band as a singer and bass guitar player. She even had a small part in a short film alongside her brother called Walking Backwards. She recounts that this was around the time that she stumbled upon an album called “Dummy” by Portishead, which left a lasting impression on Obel, describing it as the mix of melancholy and a dream.

She met Danish musician and producer Elton Theander, and together the pair founded the band Sohio. It was a short-lived project, as Obel decided to move to Berlin after visiting it once, and has lived there since. In 2009 Obel uploaded a demo of her song “Just So” onto her Myspace page. Despite the song being used in an advertisement for Deutsche Telekom, Obel had to fight hard looking for a label.

Agnes Obel however, was offered a deal under PIAS Recordings in 2010, and released her debut album “Philharmonics” that same year. She writes, plays, sings, records and produces all of her material on her own, taking a lot of care perfecting the piano alongside the vocals as she has said “The piano and the singing are two equal things to me – maybe not inseparable but very connected. You can say they are like two equal voices”. The album went to number 1 in Denmark and Belgium. It also charted in France, Netherlands and Switzerland, going 5x Platinum in Denmark alone. Her sophomore release, “Aventine” gained similar success, again, making it to number 1 in Denmark and Belgium.

It was on her 2014 tour that she decided to start work on her third studio album, saying that she wants to work less with piano and more with other kinds of old keyboards.

Live reviews

Agnes Obel’s debut record rich with obscure cerebral tales to excite the curious mind, first tiptoed over the airwaves in 2010. All of the songs are self-penned, self-produced and recorded in Berlin, Danish-born Agnes’ adopted hometown. The interwoven, haunting stories, reminiscent of the mysterious and macabre folklore spun by Angela Carter and the Brothers Grimm, are accompanied by the delicious sound of piano, violin and cello, a veritable heady mix of music for the mind, body and soul. The journey offered through this intoxicating wood invites you to veer off the beaten track to explore the powdered, crisp ground beyond, which is where, ((hush) if you dare), you will observe magic, mysterious, emotion laden songs falling from a sun dappled September sky tempting you to reach out to catch. Until the release of her 2013 follow-up record, Aventine, Agnes was THE best-kept secret, hidden intentionally amongst the flora and fauna of small European venues before the inevitable larger outfits greedily clamoured and, bringing with them, a greater distance between artist and audience. However, Agnes’ simple, pure and unassuming approach will surely keep the corporate beast at arm’s length, as this is where the beauty of her live music set lies; the emotive, lush, vibrating sound of a sumptuous voice caressing sublime lyrics along with instruments, which work best in spaces built to give the optimum acoustically, not typically nurtured by the back breaking caverns found on the contemporary world tour.

A rapidly expanding European tour has gained momentum, transporting Agnes back and forwards across the globe, with the north Americas and Australia desperately craving their aural fill. This is no wonder as an Agnes Obel concert is as charming, easy, beautiful and intelligent as she herself is; you sit and sway, beautifully crafted song after song warming and welcoming you, yet always leaving you wanting more. Having been lucky to see her live on a few occasions, it is notable that she has grown in confidence in her interactions with the audience. This is pleasing as her dry musings raise a smile or communicate something precious from the closely watched heart of hers about the song to be performed. For example, Agnes shared with her Barbican audience in April 2014 that Run Cried the Crawling’s inspiration is a story her late father used to tell her as a child; it was a poignant personal grain laid bare before us, rendering her questioning whether she could carry the song having evoked the memory of a dear loved one lost and the audience feeling even more protective towards her. Live performance affords experiment and clever tinkering with songs in the way that adds fuel to a brightly burning fire, giving the hungry crowd a raw and satisfying feast on which to dine as opposed to a note perfect impression of her records. A delight for one’s senses, leaving a unique almost spiritual glow only experienced on rare occasions from a live concert. Whichever path Agnes chooses next, one thing is for sure; her words are never dead, they are alive, and leave an ingrained melodic memory never to be erased.

To begin with, the concert took place in awesome Paradiso in Amsterdam, a place so legendary that you are immediately in a different state of mind and energy as you step in. So we had a gorgeous location and atmosphere. We were thrilled since the first moments we had together that evening, at her entrance on stage, when she greeted us with such a kind and joyful smile that you were quickly swept away - convinced that what's coming is special. And it was, she carried us softly and chillingly through the new stories she sings these days, blended with the older and more familiar ones. The mix was perfect from my point of view, and I liked very much the (new) focus on cellos - including for her older songs. It was my first Agnes Obel concert, so I don't know if that happens usually when she plays live. The ladies in her band are awesome! They have beautiful voices and are very talented, really nice to see how the group works together to get every song to a higher level than what you had in your mind from the recordings. I was very happy that she also did what we were all 'crying' for (I imagine) - she played The Curse and ended with Riverside. We had a very special evening, I was very excited to be there and the audience was great. I highly recommend going to one of her concerts, even if you are just curious about the experience and not a die-hard fan. Oh, there was even a funny moment when something went wrong with the sound - as in we had a squealing sound out of the blue. Her reaction was priceless - very sweet, relaxed and natural. Thank you!

Simple melodies are what Agnes Obel herself has stated that she is attracted to. I find that lovely. Sometimes with today's music there really is just too much going on. The human ear and the sense of hearing is delicate. It can easily become overloaded. And over time, music lovers have shown that simple is good, that less can be more.

Agnes Obel takes us back to a place of peace and serenity: the tones are pure as the driven snow. The harmonies, the keys pressed and placed, they all have a distinct purpose. Not everyone will appreciate this, sadly.

It is soft, gentle yet is able to reach around and embrace your most vital organ, your heart. Agnes Obel is in a class all her own. Her performances are memorable, really unforgettable: they generate and evoke a reaction. Nope- you won't really find a rowdy audience erupting in thunderous applause of shoutouts, but you can tell through their reactions how much they are pleased by Agnes and her contributions to performing arts. A wonderful, intimate experience.

An excellent show from start to finish. Full of ethereal tones and haunting melodies each member of the band accompanying Obel were on point, mixing their low and high voices with Obel's and braving difficult combinations of sound with percussionist ever keeping the beat and rhythm on going. Both cellists (who also served as piano and percussion) were particularly spectacular in my opinion as they worked both in sync but also went off on solo expeditions within a given piece. The strong lead vocals from Obel and her witty conversations between songs encouraged the crowd on as the lights changed from song to song, adding to the other ambiance to create a perfect environment to enjoy great music.

I love Agnes Obel. Her music en voice are beautiful, mezmerizing, hanting.

In that respect the show was wonderful. She performed with two cellists and a drummer/oboe player.

All girls. Wonderful!

The lighting was another matter. It was very over the top, moving, blinking, rotating. It was distracting me from the music and voices. Sometimes the spots were directed at us, the audience. The light was blinding and really interfered with my enjoyment of the voices and music.

It almost seemed as if she's afraid that the audience will be bored by a calm show in which the voices and music literally take center stage.

Anges, we will not be bored! Please tone down the lighting. :-)

As expected, the performance of Agnes Obel was great. There were a few things that made it less pleasant than it should be. The artist before AO was truly terrible, very far below the quality of AO. The sound quality made it stressful for us and the temperature and humidity in the hall made it tropically damp, not my cup of tea.

For us, it's very strange that the quality level of everything on that evening was that extremely far below the standard that Agnes Obel deliveres. I'd love to sea her show again but never again in the "Forum de Liege".

A truly memorable show and delighted we could be there. She wandered on to the stage very quietly around 9pm with her three musicians and played an amazing repertoire of old and new. She seemed very modest on stage and spoke few words but the music was powerful. Highlight for me was Fuel to Fire and Philharmonics. She said this was the final night of her tour. During her encore her famous Riverside was a real treat. Would not miss her next show and thanks to Songkick for the clever alert this time around !

I loved every second of this performance ... I was fortunate to be standing 5m from the stage ... the power of the cellos ... the focused faces of the four ladies who really played as a happy team ... the updated arrangements were refreshing in subtle ways compared to the albums ... an excellent group of female musicians/singers ... Agnes was much more relax & talkative than during previous Belgian concerts ... extremely enjoyable ... and thanks for bringing Mark Berube along!

We didn't like the performance too much, AB is too big for her music. The CD is excellent and the show she gave a few years ago in Brussels Royal Circus was a reference (although she was having a cold!). No, Agnes, stay away from these big concert halls and leave at least two musicians home, you’re doing much better alone!

Agnes Obel delivered a memorable show filling the room with a melodious sound of piano and cellos enhanced by a spot on percussion and amazing singing (really good back vocals). Personally I thought the best moments were The Curse and On Powdered Ground.
