Know the rules before you apply to travel to Canada from India

tourist visa for canada from india

Francais | हिंदी | ਪੰਜਾਬੀ | ગુજરાતી

There are scammers making guarantees about working, studying or travelling in Canada. They charge a lot of money for bad service or no service at all. Their actions can have serious consequences for you and your family.

No one can guarantee you a visa

Scammers will tell you that you meet the criteria for a visa, even if you don’t, so that they can take your money. Don’t be fooled . Find out if you’re eligible to come to Canada (opens in a new tab)   .

On this page

Using a visa agent, consequences of fraud, application fees, fake job offers, student scams.

You can apply for a visa on your own, or you can use a visa agent (called a “representative” in Canada). The agent helps you fill out forms, and they can also submit applications on your behalf . If you use a representative, you must include this information in your application. If you don’t, the application could be refused, and you could be banned from applying for 5 years.

There are 2 types of representatives:

  • Unpaid representatives help you with the application process without charging a fee , and they often include friends and family members. They fill out forms and submit your application for you, for free .
  • Paid representatives must be authorized in Canada to charge money for their services. They fill out forms and submit your application for you, for a fee .

Authorized representatives are regulated professionals who understand Canada’s immigration and application processes. They can be lawyers, paralegals, Quebec notaries, or consultants registered with the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (opens in a new tab)   . They can explain the different visas, advise you on your application, and communicate with the Government of Canada on your behalf.

Be careful when hiring unauthorized visa agents

We won’t deal with visa agents who charge a fee but are not authorized representatives. If you use an unauthorized representative, we may return your application or refuse it.

Hiring a visa agent will not help your application get processed any faster or guarantee that your visa will be approved. Agents do not have special connections with Canadian visa officers. Canadian immigration officials follow the same steps and rules when reviewing all applications, whether you hire an agent or apply on your own.

If your application was refused, make sure you understand why it was refused before you reapply . Applying again with the same information is a waste of your time and money. It will not change the decision, and it will cost you more.

No one can guarantee that your visa will be approved .

If you hire an agent to help you fill out the application, ask people you trust to recommend an agent they used to get a visa. Get advice from a few people before you choose.

If the agent applies on your behalf, remember these tips:

  • Both of you have to fill out and sign the Use of a Representative Form (opens in a new tab)   . Failure to declare information on your application is considered lying, and your application may be refused .
  • Ask to be present when the agent submits your application through IRCC’s online system to make sure it gets sent. A lot of scammers will tell you that they’ve sent in your application, but they haven’t .

If you’re paying someone for their services

  • ask for a written contract and breakdown of the IRCC fees and the services you’re paying for
  • get a signed receipt for every payment you make

Don’t lie or send fake documents

It’s a serious crime to lie on an application or send fake or altered documents. Your application will be refused and you could be banned from Canada for at least 5 years .

You’re responsible for the information you give in a visa application even if you use a visa agent .

If a Canadian visa officer finds false information on an application, you’re the one who will face the consequences—not your agent .

If someone tells you to lie on a visa application or give fake documents, they are putting you and your family at risk .

Never sign blank forms or applications given to you by a visa agent.

Before you sign your application , make sure that all the information in your application and supporting documents is true and that you understand everything.

If you send false documents or information or your agent does

  • your application will be refused
  • you could be banned from Canada for at least 5 years
  • you could have a permanent record of fraud with IRCC

The Canadian government works with partners to train officers and watch for fake documents.

Don’t waste your money

You and your family shouldn’t be spending your life savings on an application. It costs around 6,000 (CAN$100) to apply for a visitor visa. Beware of scammers who charge a lot more than that. Application fees are the same for everyone.

  • temporary resident visa (visitor visa): $100 ( 6,000)
  • work permit * : $155 ( 9,300)
  • open work permit * : $255 ( 15,500)
  • study permit * : $150 ( 9,100)
  • biometrics: $85 ( 5,100)

You must pay to have your fingerprints and photo (biometrics) taken, but making an appointment is free .

Fees are given in Canadian dollars, followed by approximate rupee conversions.

Beware of fake job offers and student scams

Scammers around you and on the internet will promise to get you a work or student visa for Canada. They may also tell you that once you get a visa, you will be able to apply to become a permanent resident (PR).

No one can guarantee you a visa or PR .

Before a Canadian company can hire a foreign worker, they must try to hire someone in Canada. The company has to get a document from the government that gives them permission to hire a foreign worker. The document is called a labour market impact assessment (LMIA), and it costs the company 60,200 (CAN$1,000) for each worker they want to hire. The company must pay this fee .

If a job offer sounds too good to be true, it’s probably a scam . Research the company and the job offer to make sure they’re both real before you pay a visa agent to help you.

Learn more about working in Canada (opens in a new tab)   .

Canadian companies have to pay the fee for the labour market impact assessment (LMIA). The government does not let the worker pay the cost. Beware of companies, recruiters or agents who ask you to pay this fee. If the company does not comply with the requirements to hire a foreign worker, the LMIA could be revoked, and your visa could be cancelled.

If the LMIA is approved, your employer should give you a copy of the approval letter for you to include with your work permit application. You need the LMIA approval letter before you can apply for the work permit.

It could be a scam if

  • a recruiter charges you money to find a job Note: Honest companies pay recruiters to find workers, so you shouldn’t have to pay for a job offer .
  • you’re asked to pay money up front for the right to apply, the labour market impact assessment (LMIA), training, or supplies like tools or a uniform
  • a recruiter or employer promises that you can move to Canada and start working in a few weeks
  • the wages seem too high for the job or region Note: The Government of Canada Job Bank (opens in a new tab)   lists average wages by occupation and city. You can enter the city or postal code for the job and find its salary range.
  • the job description is vague (for example, location, duties, benefits)
  • no experience is required
  • no interview is required
  • a recruiter or employer promises that once you have a job, your family can move to Canada
  • permanent residence (PR) is guaranteed once you’re working in Canada Note: No one can guarantee you PR .

Many companies will post job openings on their website. If the position offered to you is not on the company’s website, it could be a scam. Ask your friends or family in Canada to research the company and the job offer to make sure they’re both real.

Step 2: Prepare Documents: Gather the necessary documents, including your passport, proof of travel history, or valid US visa. Ensure all documents are accurate and up-to-date.

Step 3: Complete the Application: Fill out the standard Temporary Resident Visitor Visa application form. There is no specific CAN+ application form; use the regular application form provided for visitor visas.

Step 4: Submit Online or at VAC: Online Submission: Apply online through the official website. Answer questions accurately, and the system will identify your application as CAN+ if you meet the criteria.

Step 5: Visa Application Center (VAC) Submission: Visit any VAC and inform the staff that you wish to apply under CAN+. Provide proof of your travel history to Canada or your valid US visa.

Step 6: Biometrics (if required): Some applicants may need to provide biometric information (fingerprints and photos). If required, visit a designated biometrics collection point.

  • Wait for Processing: Wait for the processing of your application. CAN+ applications typically receive expedited processing, reducing the waiting time significantly.
  • Application Outcome: You will be notified of the application outcome. If approved, follow the instructions provided to obtain your visa and plan your trip to Canada.

Applying for a Canada Visitor Visa from India

If you are planning on visiting Canada, you must obtain a temporary resident visa. This will allow you to stay in Canada for up to 6 months. There are 2 ways you can do this from India:

  • Apply online at www.canada.ca
  • Apply through www.vfsglobal.ca . VFS Global has offices in New Delhi, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, and Kolkata

Types of visas for Canada

There are 5 types of temporary resident visas, however, if you are going to Canada for tourism purposes, then you would apply for number 1 – a visitor visa:

  • Temporary foreign workers (TFWs)
  • Temporary resident permit workers (TRP)
  • Transit visa – only required if you are traveling through Canada for less than 48 hours on your way to another country

Visitor visas are issued as:

  • Single entry – you will be permitted to enter Canada once during the visa dates
  • Multiple entry – you will be permitted to enter Canada as many times as you wish before the visa expires

The Canada Visitor Visa Application Process

Processing times vary depending on where you are applying from. If you are applying from India, the processing time is 94 days. However, this timescale is not absolute. It may take longer due to the type of application submitted and whether it is complete. Also, if the visa office cannot verify your information easily, they may ask you for further documentation which may also affect the time it takes to process your application.

Please note, the processing time doesn’t include the time it takes for your application to be sent to the government of Canada from VFS in India or the time you need to provide bio-metric data.

You should bear these points in mind when applying for your Canadian visitor visa to ensure there is enough time for your application to be processed before your travel date.

How to apply for a Canada visitor visa

Before you decide whether to apply online or in person, you should consider the benefits of applying online:

  • No courier fees or mail delivery time
  • Online applications may be processed more quickly

  • Get updates on the status of your application

Whether you apply online or in person, there are 4 steps which you must follow:

Step 4: Pay the Application Fee

The Canada Tourist Visa application fee must be paid online, and it's non-refundable. The fee must be paid in Canadian dollars, and the amount may vary depending on the current exchange rate. The fee must be paid before you can submit your application.

Step 6: Wait for a Decision

After submitting your application, you'll need to wait for a decision. The processing time for a Canada Tourist Visa application from India can vary depending on the current volume of applications, but it typically takes around 2-4 weeks. During this time, the immigration officer may contact you for an interview or request additional documentation.

Canadians can 'pack their suitcases' as India reopens online travel visa processing

Nazir Karnai woke up on Wednesday to the news he's been waiting two months to hear: Canadians can apply online for tourist visas to India once again.

"It was such a relief," the president of Explore India Journeys said on his way to what he anticipated would be a busy day at the Vancouver-based travel agency.

"Every day people were checking, 'Did you hear anything? Did you hear anything?"'

India's high commission in Ottawa confirmed on social media that the decision took effect as of Wednesday.

The reversal comes two months after India stopped processing visas at its Canadian missions, and for Canadian citizens abroad.

In September, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in the House of Commons that Canada's intelligence services had what he called credible information about "a potential link" between India's government and the killing of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The 45-year-old was shot by masked gunmen outside a Surrey, B.C., gurdwara in June in what police said was a targeted killing.

The Indian government had accused Nijjar of being linked to terrorism, but it has also denied involvement in his death, calling the allegations absurd.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who visited India earlier this month, urged New Delhi to work with Canadian officials investigating Nijjar's death. Trudeau has publicly made the same request.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller told reporters in Ottawa on Wednesday that he was happy to hear the ban had ended.

"It shouldn't have happened in the first place," he said. "It's encouraging news for people (who) are looking to travel."

Miller declined to speculate about why India had stopped processing Canadians' visas on Sept. 21, saying he knows only what New Delhi has said publicly. It had argued that diplomats in Canada could not safely get to work.

India's worries about Sikh separatist groups in Canada have long strained the relationship between the two countries, despite maintaining strong defence and trade ties. India had previously accused Canada of harboring separatists and terrorists.

Last month, Canada recalled 41 of its 62 diplomats in India after New Delhi warned it would strip their diplomatic immunity -- something Canadian officials said was a violation of the Geneva Convention.

In late October, India began easing the visa restrictions, resuming business, medical and conference visas as well as entry for people with family ties in India.

That entry visa was restricted to "persons of Indian origin" or their spouses or children. There had been uproar online from Canadians who were unable to visit relatives during the country's wedding season, which began in November.

Restrictions remained in place for tourists, students, journalists and missionaries until Wednesday.

Karnai said about 70 per cent of his clients did not have a visa for their upcoming trips.

"I'm also happy for both countries, Canada and India, you know it's a great start," he said, adding that during a recent visit to India he got the impression that "nobody knows about this visa thing."

Karnai said many of his clients are planning to attend weddings this winter.

"We'll be calling people and we'll be letting them know that now they can pack their suitcases," he said.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 22, 2023.
