Blue corner.

Dive Site The corner is a flat plateau, running a couple of hundred yards out to sea before dropping off abruptly. Consistently active with big and little fish action due to strong tidal currents. Small hills, sand tunnels, and gorges cut into the reef. Depending on the direction of the current, the pelagic fish will switch from one side of the corner to the other. Marine Life Gray Reef Sharks and White Tip Reef Sharks, Blue Fin and Bigeye Trevallies, large schools of Jacks and Snappers, Hawksbill and Green Turtles, Groupers, schools of Barracuda, a variety of small tropical fish, Napoleon Wrasse, Bump-head Parrotfish, Moray Eels, Mackerel, Wahoo and, on occasions, spotted Eagle Rays. The critter list is almost endless: Leafy Scorpionfish, Nudibranchs, Lionfish, Anemone Fish. Bigger pelagics are occasionally seen at the deeper reaches of Blue Corner: Hammerheads, Bull Sharks, Tiger and Whale Sharks, Marlin, Sailfish, Whales, Mantas, schooling Yellowfin and Dog Tooth Tuna.

Dive Site Four vertical shafts that open on top of the reef into a large cavern with an exit on the outer reef wall. It is common on an outgoing tide to dive through the Blue Holes and continue on to Blue Corner. The cavern and holes were formed by fresh water erosion millions of years ago when water levels were much lower than they are today. Marine Life Tubastrea, Wire and Black Coral adorn the walls of the Blue Holes. White Tip Reef sharks and Leopard Sharks can be seen sleeping on the sandy bottom of the cave or just outside the exit. Special critters found inside the Blue Holes are the Flaming Scallop, Leafy Scorpionfish, Dart Fish, Nudibranchs and Cleaner Shrimps. Wahoos, Barracudas, Dogtooth Tuna, White tips and Gray Reef sharks patrol the exit.

Big Drop-Off & Ngemelis Wall

Dive Site Sheer vertical wall, running along the whole length of Ngemelis Island, in some places only a few feet away from the island The edge of the reef drops straight down to 900 feet. One of Jacques Cousteau’s favorite wall dives. Close to the mooring buoy, a large chain connected to a 6-foot steel sphere can be seen. This chain and ball were used during WWII to prevent the Japanese from entering the waterway leading to German Channel. Marine Life Gorgeous Soft Corals, Leather Corals, and Fans Schools of Pyramid Butterfly Fish and Square Spot Anthias forage for plankton just off the wall. Moorish Idols, Sergeant Majors, Yellowtail Fusiliers and a variety of Angelfish are found along the edge of the reef. Gray Reef, White Tip, and solitary Leopard Sharks patrolling back and forth along the drop-off. White Tip Sharks, Nurse Sharks and Leopard Sharks can be seen sleeping on the sandy bottom. The very well-camouflaged Leaf Fish, Stonefish, and Lionfish. Green and Hawksbill Turtles. Anemones and many colorful reef fish on the reef top.

Chandelier Cave

Dive Site A cave system made up of five separate, connecting chambers with air pockets (4 are water-filled). Over the millenniums, rainwater, percolating down through the limestone, eroded the interior of the islands, forming vast cave systems. Chandelier Cave was once an open-air cave. The stalactites and stalagmites slowly grew into formations resembling glittering chandeliers. After the last ice age, the water level slowly rose, completely concealing the cave's entrance. 3 depth charges from WWII can be found on the left of the entrance. Halocline inside the cave (mixing of salt and freshwater or sediment, creating a layered effect). Marine Life Soldier Fish and Cardinal Fish inside the cave. Small shrimp and crabs that cling to the sponges found along the walls. The elusive Mandarin Fish and other small reef fish around the cave's entrance.

Devil Fish City

Dive Site Famous for its Manta Rays, generally between January and April. 3 cleaning stations. Best during slack high tide or incoming tide. Marine Life Sides of the channel are lined with massive fields of sea whips, sea fans, soft corals, and large stands of evergreen Tubastrea corals. Highlights are cleaning stations where Manta Rays hover while Cleaner Wrasse and Butterfly Fish rid them of parasitic isopods living in and around their mouth, gills and belly. Coral heads are adorned with hundreds of copper Sweeper Baitfish. Rainbow Runners, Reef Sharks, Bumphead Parrotfish, Black Snappers, Black-Bar Barracudas, Unicorn Fish, Striped Skipjacks, Fusiliers, Crocodile Fish, Nudibranchs, Leafy Scorpionfish.

German Channel

Dive Site During the German occupation of Palau, guano (phosphate) was mined on the southern island of Angaur. In order to bring guano to town, the Germans blasted and dredged a channel that connected the inner lagoon with the open ocean. The outside mouth is dived on the incoming tide when nutrient- and plankton-rich current flows into the inner lagoon. Known for Manta Rays, schooling sharks and an abundance of tropical fish. Marine Life Schooling Jacks, Barracudas, Trevallies, and Snappers. Cuttlefish and Black Tip reef sharks in the shallows. Sandy bottom is home to Garden Eels and Blind Gobies. Mantas can usually be seen feeding on plankton at the mouth of the channel. Both Mantas and Reef sharks are known to get cleaned by Cleaner Wrasse and Butterflyfish at the cleaning stations in the late afternoon. Mantas will approach a cleaning station a couple of times before they hover over the station to get cleaned.

New Drop-Off

Dive Site Two reef walls meet here to create a dramatic corner with a plateau, before dropping into the abyss. Marine Life Schooling Blue Stripe Snappers, Black Snappers, Napoleon Wrasse, Barracudas, Spotted Eagle Ray, 6-Banded Angelfish, Regal and Emperor Angelfish, Hawksbill and Green Turtles. Clouds of Pyramid Butterfly Fish, Square Spot Anthias, Redtooth Triggerfish, Moorish Idols, Sergeant Majors and Yellowtail Fusiliers along the reef edge. Gray and Whitetip Reef sharks patrolling the wall and corner. Search for Leafy Scorpionfish, Moray Eels, nudibranchs and turtles on the plateau. Sea anemones along the upper reaches of the wall. Very large Gorgonian fans and healthy soft corals on the sheer reef walls.

Ngedbus Coral Garden, Wall & Corner

Dive Site At Ngedbus Coral Garden, many deep canyons and crevices cut the slope and are home to a large variety of marine life. There is usually no current present. Visibility is best during incoming tide. A gentle coral slope drops from the top of the reef down to 75 feet, before it changes to a ridge of broken corals and sand. Ngedbus Wall is a sheer reef drop. At Ngedbus Corner, a small plateau at around 25 feet extends out from the wall. Marine Life Crocodile fish, Stingrays, Cuttlefish and the Ornate Eagle Ray are commonly seen. Schools of Black Tip Reef Sharks usually come up close to the Coral Garden. Many Gray Reef Sharks patrol the walls and circle around the corner. Along the reef's edge, Pyramid Butterfly Fish and myriads of Redtoothed Triggerfish congregate. Schools of Barracuda, Rudderfish, Snappers, Napoleon Wrasse, Lionfish, Emperors, Puffers, Turtles, as well as big pods of Spinner Dolphins can be seen. Sea fans, Whip and Wire corals, healthy soft corals.

Ngerong Outside & Inside

Dive Site Ngerchong Outside Wall is a steep drop-off. It gets shallow and wide at the entrance to Denges Channel, also known as Ngerchong Channel. Shaped like a horseshoe and with a sandy bottom, Ngerchong Inside curves toward Denges channel and is protected by the outer reef wall. Marine Life Wall is covered with a variety of soft and hard corals. Look for Gray Reef Sharks, Black Tips, White Tips and sometimes Leopard Sharks. September-November, Ngerchong Outside is a nursery for baby Gray Reef Sharks. Look for large schools of juvenile sharks around 10 inches long at around 60 feet, accompanied by an adult female. Cleaning stations can be found along the face of the reef wall around 60 feet. At Ngerchong Inside, Cuttlefish can be seen year round as it is a breeding and hatching ground. Females will lay dozens of 2-inch long grape-shaped white eggs among branching hard corals. She will hover around her nest until the eggs hatch. To locate the cuttlefish, swim along the edge of the reef where it meets the sandy bottom, and stay 3-6 feet off the bottom. Cuttlefish are masters of disguise. Shrimp, Crab, Nudibranchs, Feather worms, Garden Eels and many shells, turtles and, occasionally, Mantas or Sting Rays.

Peleliu Express & Yellow Wall

Dive Site Yellow Wall is a vertical wall that runs parallel to the southern tip of Peleliu Island. Yellow Wall is named after the golden yellow tube corals that cover the wall along this area of the reef. The Reef has a number of crevices, arches and small caverns to explore. At approximately 100 feet, the reef forms a plateau before dropping off thousands of feet. The Peleliu Express is famous for its ripping currents that can seemingly come out of nowhere and change direction without warning. When the current is running, this site is considered the ultimate in drift dives. During Full and New Moon, the currents are more severe. Marine Life The strong currents at this point attract many pelagics like Sharks, Barracuda, Tuna, Rays, huge Giant Groupers and Napoleon Wrasse, Oriental Sweetlips, Palette Surgeonfish and large Rainbow Runners. Schools of Jacks, Snappers, Redtoothed Triggerfish, Anthias and Pyramid Butterflyfish along the edge. The top of the reef abounds with Sweetlips, Emperors, Wrasse, Groupers and Eels. Green and Hawksbill Turtles eat the Yellow Tube Corals. Rare sightings of Blue Marlins, Sailfish, Whalesharks, pods of Sperm Whales, Pilot Whales and Orcas.

Peleliu Wall & Cut

Dive Site Peleliu Wall is one of the deepest and most beautiful wall dives in Palau. Deep canyons, crevices and caves cut into the wall, offering hideouts and shelter to a large variety of marine life. Peleliu Cut is where the ocean currents flowing around the archipelago converge, making up some of the strongest currents you will experience in Palau. Due to the unpredictability and strength of currents, the Peleliu Cut is considered an advanced drift dive. Marine Life Famous for large pelagic fish action. Bright yellow soft corals, wire and whip coral, bushes of Black Coral and huge sea fans cover the walls. Gray Reef Sharks, White Tip Sharks, Barracudas and Jacks. On rare occasions, Sailfish, Marlin, Bull sharks, Silver Tips, Hammerheads, Tiger sharks, Sperm Whales and Orcas have been spotted. The plateau and reef's edge host large numbers of tropical fish, including Pyramid Butterfly Fish, Square Spot Anthias, Moorish Idols, Sergeant Majors, Yellowtail Fusiliers, Palette Surgeonfish, Bumphead Parrotfish, Triggerfish, Leafy Scorpionfish and Purple Anthias.

Dive Site Shark City consists of sheer vertical walls, moderate slopes, and canyons. The reef creates a corner with a plateau on the top. This finger-shaped reef is Palau’s westernmost point. Marine Life Gray Reef Sharks, schools of Barracuda, Snappers and Unicornfish patrol the walls and corner. Pyramid Butterfly Fish, Square Anthias, Moorish Idols, Napoleon Wrasse, Spotted Eagle Rays and Yellowtail Fusiliers, large schools of silver Barracuda, Big-Eye Trevallies, and Black Snappers. Large patches of Lettuce Corals and Staghorn Corals can be found on top of the plateau and the canyons boast huge Gorgonian Fans. Rare visitors include Bull Sharks, Silver Tips and Hammerhead Sharks.

Short Drop-Off

Dive Site A steep reef wall turning toward the open sea. At the corner, the drop off will gradually change to a massive deep plateau. Got its name due to its proximity to Koror. Marine Life White Tips, Gray Reef and Black Tip Reef Sharks. A Large variety of soft and hard corals. Large schools of Batfish, Blue Tail Jacks, Parrotfish, Butterfly Fish and wrasses. Eagle Rays and Octopus. During September to November, this is a nursery for baby Gray Reef Sharks. Schools of juvenile sharks, 10 inches in length accompanied by an adult female, patrol the water at around 100 feet. This site is also where lucky divers might see the Chambered Nautilus. Nautilus live in depths exceeding 600 feet and come up to the shallows to feed at night. Nautilus are found only near the equator and prefer near-freezing water temperature. They are believed to not have changed in over 400 million years.

Siaes Corner, Wall & Tunnel

Dive Site Siaes Tunnel is an enormous, deep underwater cavern with 3 openings into the chamber from the side of the reef wall. The floor of Siaes Tunnel was, at one time, at sea level. A ledge around the 100 feet mark is where the ocean, during the last Ice Age, used to strike the shallow reef. The outside wall drops vertically to around 150 feet, before it slopes off hundreds of feet to the ocean floor. Siaes Corner is perched over a deep blue abyss where currents can get very strong. Marine Life in the Tunnel White Tip Reef Sharks and Stingrays resting on the sandy bottom in the cavern. Pyramid Butterfly Fish, Anthias and schools of Big-Eye Trevallies and Snappers at the entrance. Bushes of Black Coral, Soft Coral and Gorgonian Fans. Rare Angelfish hide among the crevices at the top of the cavern (notably, the Blue-Black Pygmy Angelfish, Multicolor Pygmy Angelfish and Colin’s Angelfish), Rare Burgess Butterfly fish, Decorated Dartfish and Helfrich’s Dartfish. Gobies and shrimps on the sandy cave floor. Marine Life on the Wall and Corner At incoming tide, large schools of Gray Reef Sharks, Barracuda and Jacks can be seen patrolling the edge of the reef. Green and Hawksbill Turtles, Square Anthias, Sergeant Majors, Pyramid Butterfly fish, Moorish Idols, Anthias, Angelfish and Yellowtail Fusiliers are found in abundance along the edge.

Turtle Cove & Barnum’s Wall

Dive Site The reef extends out to a plateau from and around Ngercheu Island. On top of the reef at Turtle Cove is a mini blue hole that forms a large cavern. Numerous small caves, arches and ledges. Turtle Cove is a vertical reef wall. Currents can be strong at the corner. At Barnum’s Wall, the reef moderately slopes down and then changes its formation into a rough sandy run-off. Before the reef reaches the corner, it changes to a sheer wall. Marine Life Schools of Big Eye Jacks, Striped and Black Snappers, Goatfish, Pyramid Butterfly Fish, Hawkfish, Square Spot Anthias, Moorish Idols, Titan Triggerfish, Anemones, a variety of Angelfish and Yellowtail Fusiliers. Different species of Nudibranchs. Gray Reef Sharks and White Tips patrol the reef top. Turtles, large Groupers, Sweetlips. White Tip Reef Sharks and Leopard Sharks like to rest on the sandy run-off. Gorgonian Fans, Crinoids, Soft and Leather Corals. Important Tips

Turtle Wall

Dive Site Turtle Wall is the central part of a vertical wall that runs along the whole length of Ngemelis Island. The reef is extremely deep, descending to over 900 feet. A popular gathering site for Green and Hawksbill turtles. Marine Life Turtles, turtles and more turtles! This is one of the few dive sites that live up to its name. You will almost always see turtles swimming, eating, sleeping and sometimes you can even see them mating. Male turtles have a noticeable tail, whereas females have no visible tails. Pyramid Butterfly Fish, Square Spot Anthias, Moorish Idols, Yellowtail Fusiliers and Snappers are found all along the edge and top of the reef. Schools of Rainbow Runners, Gray and White Tip Reef Sharks, Fusiliers and Napoleon Wrasse. Tubastrea and small hard corals adorn the wall. Deeper down, sea fans, soft coral colonies and sea whips are found.

Ulong Channel

Dive Site The barrier reef runs perpendicular to Ulong Channel. The sandy bottom of the channel is decorated with numerous coral heads and coral formations. The sides of the channel start just below the surface and gradually slope toward the sandy bottom. Currents can be strong and unpredictable. Marine Life During incoming tides, Gray Reef Sharks, Sting Rays, schools of Jacks, Snappers, Barracuda and Batfish patrol the mouth of the Channel. During Full Moon, between April to July, thousands of Groupers gather here to spawn. When Titan and Yellow-Margin Triggerfish are nesting in the Channel, they become extremely territorial and protective of their nest sites. They will dig out large grooves in the sandy bottom to lay their eggs. An enormous Lettuce Coral that has grown from the bottom of the channel to a height of 15-20 ft. Turtles, Reindeer Wrasse and small reef fish. Huge Giant Clams and Whip Corals.

Dive Information

Daily dive tours .

Palau is considered one of the world's premier dive destinations, with dozens of dive sites in a rare variety: walls with fascinating coral formations, reef corners where the currents attract sharks, rays and schooling fish, channels and other sandy bottom sites, tunnels, holes, caves and caverns, and plenty of WWII freighter and plane wrecks! From macro to mantas, Palau has it all!

Although Palau is considered an advanced dive destination due to frequent currents and depths, there are plenty of easy dive sites for beginners, or for those who wish to become a diver!

A typical day of diving with Sam's Tours beings with an 8:30 a.m. (unless otherwise stated) complementary pickup from various hotels in Koror to our dive center in Malakal.

Most dive sites are located about 45 minutes from Sam's Tours, offering our guests picture-perfect scenic boat rides through the mushroom-like Rock Islands. Surface intervals and lunch breaks are normally spent on either a virgin white sand beach with wild green vegetation, equipped with cozy seating benches and toilet facilities, or on top of snorkeling sites with stunning shallow reef plateaus.

Depending on your daily schedule, most boats return to Sam's Tours around 3-4 p.m. You can hop right back into the water, with our offer of unlimited free dives at Sam's Macro Wall right off our dock, where mandarin fish are often spotted mating at twilight.

We dive a maximum of three tanks a day on our day tours, not counting Sam's Macro Wall and night dives.

The tanks are aluminum 80 cft (or 11.1 liter) tanks. We also have several 80 cft compact tanks, available upon request. We do not carry 100 cft (15L) tanks.

Sam's Tours Palau offers complimentary shuttle services back to your hotel, available whenever you choose to return. Many guests stick around to enjoy a deco-beer and snacks with friends and fellow divers at Bottom Time Bar and Grill while enjoying the beautiful sunset views.

Sam's Tours Palau

Unique Dive Expeditions

Sam’s Tours Unique Dive Expeditions are tailor-made, exclusive expeditions specializing in spawning events and animal behavior. This Unique Dive style based on the monthly lunar cycles offers an once-in-a-lifetime diving expedition.

Experience these expeditions and Palau’s premier dive sites in Sam's Tours Unique Dive style. Take advantage of diving in a small and flexible group that enables us to show you the full potential of these exceptional sites. The flexible dive itinerary is based around currents and lunar cycles to maximize your diving experience.

During certain lunar cycles (Full Moon and New Moon), different species of fish gather in huge aggregations to spawn. Numbers can vary from hundreds to thousands, depending on the species. These mind-blowing spawning events usually attract bigger predators as well. Through local knowledge, thousands of dives and documenting our experiences, we have been able to discover some of Palau’s best kept secrets.

  • FULL MOON EXPEDITION
  • For several days leading up to, and around the full moon, huge numbers of red snappers (Lutjanus bohar) aggregate, ready to spawn. Our expeditions will start on Palau’s premier dive sites where conditions can sometimes be challenging due to strong currents and early starts. However, the rewards are high! As the sun rises, we will begin our dive to watch the spectacle about to unfold. A huge aggregation rises from the deep to ensure a continuation of their species. You will witness what only can be described as an underwater display of 'fireworks' that also attracts the biggest predators in Palau.
  • NEW MOON EXPEDITION
  • A common favorite is the Bumphead Parrot Fish (Bolbometopon muricatum), often seen patrolling the reefs in smaller schools. These encounters are amongst favorites for divers, but imagine an aggregation of nearly a thousand individuals. This expedition takes us to a remote site where aggregations begin forming early morning. Hundreds of individuals from all around the area join for what is about to be an unforgettable site. Building up to a spectacular show-down, males begin their display of dominance, attempting to attract as many mating partners as possible. As females continue to gather the school spills out in the blue where tension erupts into a climatic mating dance.
  • SEABREAM EXPEDITION
  • Sam’s Tours Unique Dive Expeditions’ latest offering is the spawning aggregation of Bluelined Seabream, also known as the Sailfin Snapper (Symphorichthys spilurus). This phenomenon is arguably more special than the spawning of the Red Snapper and Bumphead Parrotfish as it only occurs in March and April for a select few days in each month. It is estimated that this aggregation could contain more than 50,000 fish and the predation on the aggregation by the Bull Sharks and Oceanic Blacktips is simply awesome. Adding to this the fact that the aggregation only occurs in Peleliu makes this the spawning aggregation that the guys from Sam’s Tours Unique Dive Expeditions relish the most!!!
  • BLACKWATER NIGHT DIVE
  • As divers, we know the adventure of night diving on the reefs –the thrill and anticipation of rolling off the boat into the inky waters below, seeing creatures rarely seen during the day. Now, imagine diving in the pitch black of night, relying solely on GPRS to lead us to the exact spot where meters of water lies below us. A lit hang-bar is lowered to 16 meters, attracting the ocean’s most bizarre creatures. Test your photography skills as creatures no bigger than a few centimeters drift pass and countless members of the jellyfish family pulsate in every color imaginable…
  • Note: Blackwater night dives cannot be offered on nights of the Full Moon and New Moon Expeditions.

Technical Diving

Whilst the diving in Palau is world renowned, there is a side to diving in Palau not everyone is aware of, and very few have experienced: technical diving. Drop-offs and walls that plummet to hundreds of meters, caves and caverns, wrecks remaining from the Japanese occupation of Palau, offering opportunities for exploration for qualified and experienced tec divers.

Tec diving at Sam's Tours is conducted by the highly trained and experienced instructors from our Unique Dive Expeditions. With many years' experience as technical divers, the Unique Dive Expeditions guides have more technical diving hours in Palau than probably anyone.

From extended range air dives to 180 ft/55 m with twin sets, through decompression gases to deep rebreather wall dives to 490 ft/150 m and beyond, Unique Dive Expeditions specializes in taking experienced technical divers to the deeper side of Palau. Non-tec-qualified divers may also complete a number of TDI and PADI Tec courses, allowing them to experience a side of Palau very few people have been privileged to visit.

Tec diving is much more than just depth; at Sam's Tours, we also offer technical wreck diving, which allows for greater time on and inside the wrecks, exploring areas recreational divers cannot experience.

Sam's Tours' facilities cater to all levels of tec diving, including diving with twin sets, various sizes of decompression cylinders, and hang bars for your comfort during decompression stops, while oxygen, helium, booster pumps, and Sofnolime are available upon request.

Staff at Sam's Tours made sure I had a great time during the dives and on the boat. I really felt I got the best possible experience during my 6 days of diving. Sharon, Arnie, Neil and June were great dive masters and made sure everyone was attended to. I was super happy with my GoPro footage after every day of dives because Sam's took me to the best dive locations for the conditions. Thanks also to my driver Swel, who was very personable, and Jennifer for being there in case I needed anything. Staff at the front desk and gear rental were great as well as the knowledgeable boat captains. I would recommend Sam's Tours to anyone looking to go to Palau for a great dive experience.

I did not give the boat any stars since I didn't actually use them - I spent some time on the house reef and met a lot of the staff in the rental department and the shop.

Sam's is fantastic. Free house diving on their reef? Borrow a tank - go dive. Right there. For free. The reef was fun, quiet, peaceful, and offered a lot of interesting animals! I saw the Razor fish or Shrimp fish dancing vertically right under their dock, beautiful corals everywhere! I looked for mandarin fish as I heard they are right in that area, but didn't see any. The dive is right in their little harbor - but there affords lots of unique creatures and topography! Next time I'm in Palau I will do some boat dives with them too!

I have dreamed of diving in Palau for many years, and finally I managed to squeeze in 6 days of diving after a work trip. WOW! For such a small country Palau has a bit of everything - macro, big fish, drop-offs, drift dives, cave dives and the list goes on.

I had heard some good things about Sam's Tours and this was also the dive operator recommended by Bluewater Travel. I wasn't disappointed. The operation is big and popular which I generally don't like, but I was also clear at the beginning that I preferred diving with experienced divers and doing dives which depart from the norm. I was told about the Unique Dive Experience which is offered by Sams Tours in collaboration with two local marine biologists. They have studied Red Snapper and Bumphead Parrot spawning for the last few years and are now able to predict fairly well when and where they will spawn. They require divers to be a minimum Advanced OpenWater and to be comfortable diving on their own - just what I like!! The two days I did Unique dives were amazing. They are a bit on the expensive side, but otherwise the chance to see spawning Red Snapper was brilliant. This was a great start to my trip. I then joined the normal Sams Tours' dives. They do a good job of trying to keep divers together with dive guides they are comfortable with, and also other divers who are diving for more than one day. This also enables the group to not dive the same sites too often.

Lunch is provided which is pretty good. Dive briefings were sometimes a little brief, and I had one boat without an auto bilge pump on a day with rough weather, but other than that the operation was great.

Sams Tours has a wall dive right next to the shop which is a great place to see Mandarin Fish and just across from the shop is Chandelier cave which was just wonderful. They also come and pick you up from your hotel every morning and always have a driver waiting to take you back.

There is a bar at Sams and always a few people hanging around to share dive tales. The atmosphere was great.

I am just looking for another excuse to go back...

sam's dive tours palau

To do land based on Palau, my impression was that choices were limited. There're a few specially catered the Japanese speaking divers, and there's one who frequently by ones who don't adhere to rules of diving, such as no drinking and diving. So Sam's Tours was an obvious choice at that time.

I was impressed by the efficiency and friendliness of the staff at the office, the two Philippinos ladies knew me by my first name and dive preference. The dive operation was a lot busier than I's used to in Hawaii and Guam, and the mixture of divers on each dive boat was interesting, which added to the fun part of diving. My Palauan dive guides and boat captions were fun and extremely knowledgeable and helpful. On day 2 of diving, the divers on our boat splited up in 2 half after the first 2 dives, since 4 of us wanted to dive the German Channel again and the other four wanted to dive the Chandeliar cave. The staff really did a good job tried to cater our needs as best as they could.

We got a box lunch everyday, which included fish, some greens, and carb. It's fine, since you can't be too picky in the middle of the ocean, when the weather is about 80-90 degree. The scenery, dive sites, and people made up for everything that's lacking. At the end of the day, they brought all of your dive gears up to the washing area, and you were responsible to cleaning and storing everything in the dive lockers. There's never any problem with things getting stolen or missing at the dive lockers.

There's a photography section, although the knowledge and help there was very minimum. So Sam's tours was more like a causal diving place than doing or learning serious underwater photography.

One major drawback for me is the choice of dive sites, which is extremely limited. I traveled during the week of Thanksgiving, so they were pretty busy and full. I chose to dive 5 days 3-4 dives per day, since the dive sites were few, on my second to last day, I started diving the same site over again. I only wished they could go up further north for the divers who don't mind to pay extra gas fee. So maybe I need to do a liveaboard if I want to dive in Palau again.

Palau Royal Resort and Sam’s Tours

Welcome to palau kids sea camp vacation.

Summer week for 2022: July 5th to 15th ( 10-nights )

Palau is an incredibly unique country and should be on every diver’s bucket list. This island is truly one of a kind diving experience in the entire world.  For families that are wanting more from vacation and looking for more of a thrill, Palau is the place! From soaring through the rock islands, diving with sharks, learning about the culture, and even getting to explore WWII ruins- it has something to offer for the entire family. The memories and adventures created on this trip are priceless.  Kids have the opportunity to dive with cuttlefish and mandarin fish right at Sam’s dive shop dock, every day at 4 pm. Several amazing presentations about sharks, WWII history, the biodiversity in Palau, and even about the plastics in our ocean. Families will learn about and have the opportunity to dive Blue Corner with reef sharks and manta rays as well as dive the famous Iro WWII wreck and many others that are covered with giant clams, bubble corals, frogfish, clown anemones, and walls of schooling fish.

WHY? The reef is home to more than 1,300 species of fascinating fish, 700 species of colorful coral, and approximately 130 rare sharks and stingrays. Palau is recognized for being the world’s first shark sanctuary and having some of the best shark dives in the South Pacific. Palau’s Southern Lagoon has earned a place as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The local government has made the entire island a shark sanctuary and made their underwater world a priority. Also, Sam’s Tours is the leader for PADI training on the island. Sam’s Tours takes certified divers of all ages and skills set in the water — with all types of marine life. In fact, there is no “real” excuse for any certified diver not to take this remarkable journey to the eighth wonder of the world.  They start with Jr. Open Water certifications starting at 10, imagine your child seeing a manta ray on their first dive! For the little ones, the PADI Seal Team kids age 8 & 9 can dive Ulong Channel, Sam’s dock, and snorkel the famous German channel to see the Manta.  The whole family will enjoy Giant clams to snorkel with at Clam City and have fun coating each other in the mud at the Milky Way.   SASY kids will learn all about the marine environments in fun ocean-oriented programs from 8 am to 3 pm daily.  We have added a full day of touring and diving in Peleliu so families can dive the best Palau has to offer and learn about its history. Give Margo or Olivia a call today to talk about Palau.  We want to give you the WOW of Palau!!

JellyFish, Palau, Kids Sea Camp, Family Vacations

Palau’s diverse marine and terrestrial ecosystems create a unique atmosphere and experience for ocean-oriented families. It is great for divers of all levels and even if you are not a diver, there is plenty to do topside. Between kayaking adventures, waterfall hikes, shopping in town, or even enjoying an afternoon at the spa, non-divers have the chance to experience the rest of Palau’s beauty.

Palau is rich in WW II history with hikes to wartime artifacts, shipwrecks, and sunken airplanes in as little as 8 feet of water. Everyone can experience the history and culture of this destination. Parents and kids can dive into the old relics and have the opportunity to dive into the German Channel. They may encounter manta rays at a cleaning station, or perhaps even see sharks, turtles, or dolphins on almost any single dive. Any avid diver you speak with if you were to ask what their “Bucket List” diving destination is, most would say Palau!

The beauty of Palau lies in its pristine water and islands: untouched, uninhabited, and unaffected by man. Sam’s Tours, very much like the Palauan nation, respects and appreciates nature, and does what it can to preserve it as such. Our environmental efforts are part of our holistic approach and tie to our philosophy of being part of the community. Even your passport stamp has you sign the “Palau Pledge”.

Terms & Conditions No refund policy applies to all payments made to Kids Sea Camp inc. This includes disruptions due to weather, illness, pandemic, epidemic, acts of God, war,  government mandates, canceled/delayed flights, and all unforeseen circumstances outside of Kid Sea Camp inc control.  Travel insurance is highly recommended for all trips. Kids Sea Camp is not an insurance company and does not collect payment for any insurance purchased with DAN , MASA , or USI . Introduction, welcome to palau: palau royal resort and sam's tours family dive vacation.

Palau, Kids Sea Camp, Bucket List

Palau is known for its unique culture and some of the villages, that still stand to this day, are traditionally organized around matrilineal clans. Women not only had the responsibility of taking care of their families and homes but they had the job of teaching the kids traditions and culture. Some of those traditions will be seen on our opening night where we will be privileged to witness traditional Palauan dancers with dinner. This show is very entertaining and will provide insight into Palau’s vast history and culture. Even with modern-day influences, the people of Palau are giving a lot of effort to preserve the culture and traditions that still remain. There will even be some guest speakers in the evening welcoming us to their country. Sometimes there is the possibility of meeting the President of Palau; an added honor and very special experience. He is truly inspirational along with the other guest that welcome us.

This trip is well suited for kids of all ages, we’ve done this trip with 2 and 3-year-olds and they have enjoyed the kids’ program! They join along with all the SASY kids ages 4 and up, however they cannot use the compressed air from the SASY unit. For our Seal Team kids that are ages 8 and up, they will have opportunities to use the dive equipment in the resort's lagoon where they might see different reef fish or even a baby sea turtle. Jr. Open Water certification course students start at age 10-17, since this is a longer trip they will have even more time to enjoy the epic diving Palau has to offer. For the kids that are already certified, they will get to enjoy diving with other kids around their age while the parents are diving with each other. With fun adventures longing to be had and new friends waiting to be met, Kids Sea Camp/Family Dive Adventures will take you to a pristine environment that will make the travel time well worth it.

Sam's Tours was founded by Sam Scott whose residence is right at the dive center. He’s around every day and still leads dive trips and fishing trips. Chances are you’ll meet him at Bottom Time Bar and Grill chatting with customers around sunset. Sam loves to bring his family to Kids Sea Camp Family weeks, so you may just get to dive with him and meet all the little ones too.

Diving Q&A for Palau

What is unique about diving in Palau? Palau’s waters are considered the #1 Underwater Wonder of the World. Its rich, pristine marine environment is famous for its drop-offs, currents, and pelagic activity. Palau’s protected inner reefs offer an abundant, extensive variety of marine life . Most dives are drift dives.

Is there a night dive included in the package? Yes, there is a night dive for adults and kids age 12 and over. Everyone else can enjoy a fun pizza/movie night.

Is Palau for advanced divers only? No. There is great diving in Palau for divers of all skill levels. Sam’s has many newly certified divers who dive with us (and many who come to Palau to get certified). While there are true dive sites that may require more advanced skills, there are over 70 dive sites to choose from and lots of fantastic diving for divers of all skill levels. Sam’s Tours dive guides choose the dive sites based on a variety of factors, including surface conditions, weather, tides, diver skill level, and diver preference. We offer a full range of PADI dive certification courses.

What type of wetsuit do I need? The water around Palau is warm about 84-86 degrees Fahrenheit. Many people dive with just a swimsuit. Most who wear wetsuits in Palau choose a 3mm suit either short or full. Sam’s has a good selection of both short and full suits available for rental.

What kind of tanks and valves do you use? For sport diving, Sam’s uses only aluminum tanks in a variety of sizes. Our most common tank size is 80cu. feet / 12 Liter. We also have a larger 100 cu. feet / 15 Liter tanks and some small 50cu. feet tanks for junior divers. Our tanks are equipped with multi-purpose valves that support DIN or US Yoke style regulators.

Where is the nearest re-compression chamber? Palau has a new two-man re-compression chamber in Koror.

How big are your dive groups? Sam’s observes a maximum of 6 divers per guide although most of our dive boats are set up for 8 divers. We do have some larger boats designed for up to 12 divers however, we still observe a maximum of only 6 divers per guide for safety and more pleasant diving.

Is it customary to offer the dive staff gratuity? We believe gratuities should be voluntary and based upon the quality of the service provided.

Getting Here / FAQ

It takes two days to get there, but only one day back.

You will be arriving in Palau very late at night on Tuesday. You will get a lovely, friendly welcome by the Sam's Tours staff and then you will be transferred to Palau Royal Resort. We will help get you checked in and all of your luggage will be taken to your room. You will enjoy some well-needed rest and enjoy the incredible breakfast buffet each morning at Palau Royal Resort.

We suggest that you travel with very comfy clothes. The kids can even wear their pajamas or sweatpants and slippers on flights, and most of the kids do this each year. Bring a travel pillow and some games, books, etc. Also, please remember each family member gets one carry-on, and a purse or backpack so be sure to take advantage of this.

If you need any medications, pack those as well in your carry-on. We know the trip to Palau is a long journey, but remember that your carry-on should contain everything you need in the instance that your luggage gets lost or delayed. Take in your carry-on any items that you cannot live without for two days. The hotel has a spa and plenty of products there so don’t weigh yourself down with things you will have available to you at the resort.

Other suggestions for your carry-on: 2 bathing suits, rash guard, hairbrush, clean T-shirts, ziplock pair of shorts, swim trunks, underclothes, flip-flops, your dive computer, you certifications cards, toothbrush, rain jacket, hairbrush, etc. If you have a particular size wetsuit and won’t enjoy a rental suit, or have a specific regulator that only works with your computer, etc. then pack those in your carry-on to make sure you have everything you need to have with you. Remember liquids must be 3.4 oz or less and must be contained a clear ziplock baggie.

Getting to Palau: There are several options to fly to Palau, and you can fly out of either LAX or Honolulu with United Airlines. You will need to depart from either LAX or HNL on Friday, and you will arrive in Palau (ROR) on Sat or Sunday depending on your flight choices. If you fly out of LAX, you will have a layover in Honolulu and also in Guam. Flights no longer stop in Yap. We have a flight consultant we work with to who can help book your flights for you.

Please see the example below, and contact Margo 803.419.2556 for any questions or concerns or more information.

Are there any other flight options?

Another great question. There is an option flying out of Atlanta, to Tokyo and then into Palau. Atlanta is a Delta hub. You can save about 2-3 hours of flight time by flying to Tokyo.

Coming home (time travel)

PASSPORTS & DOCUMENTATION

All travelers must have a current passport, adequate funds to support themselves, and a return airline ticket to travel out of the USA. Travelers must have a passport that is valid for 6 months from the date of entry to any foreign country.

It is the travelers’ responsibility to ensure they have the proper documentation to travel into each country on his or her itinerary as well as for re-entry and return to their country. Please check with the appropriate consulate as well as your chosen airline carrier to ensure you have the proper documentation. Always check your passport and visa requirements. US citizens may go to the US Department of State website at www.travel.state.gov for more information. The website also has information for consulates by country to assist with requirements.

There are special requirements for children leaving the US and many countries have adopted special requirements for the protection of children . If you are traveling with a child that is not your own, a single parent with a child, a child with a different last name, or traveling without both natural parents of the child, you will require documentation proving your right to travel with children. Since regulations vary by country, contact your consulate or embassy of your country and visit the immigration site of the country you are traveling to for the requirements. Kids Sea Camp Reservation Office and staff will not assume responsibility for passengers not having the correct documentation.

Banking & Currency:  U.S. dollar is the official currency of Palau. Traveler’s checks and all major credit cards are accepted at most businesses, including Sam’s Tours. There are several banks (Bank of Hawaii, Bank of Guam, and Bank Pacific) and plenty of automated teller machines around town.

Health & Medical Services: Palau National Hospital is a well-equipped and professionally staffed facility with an experienced Barotrauma Team. Besides, there are excellent private clinics, out-patient surgeries, and pharmacies on the island. Local supermarkets carry the most common over-the-counter medications.

Dress Code:  The dress code in Palau makes it great for kids, casual is in! Palau is a tropical island, so when it comes to attire it's:  T-shirts, shorts, and flip-flops (rubber slippers) are appropriate with very few exceptions (thankfully, ties haven’t become a hit here)! For those who want to dress up, a polo shirt, aloha shirt, or blouse will usually suffice. Parents can leave the slacks and dresses at home! Short shorts and swimsuits are okay at the beach, pool, and around the dive shop but not appropriate around town. Please keep in mind that many restaurants and the resort are heavily air-conditioned so if you get cold easily you might want to bring something to keep you warm!

International direct dialing is readily available using Calling Cards from Palau National Communications Corporation (PNCC). Cards are available at Sam’s Tours and many other business establishments. Internet access is free and available at Sam’s Tours and Palau Royal Resort.

Mobile phone service (GSM 900) is available on the island. However, international roaming is not possible, and phones will not operate without a SIM card purchased (or rented) locally.

Time Zone:  Palau is Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) + 9 hours or the same as Japan. At present we are 13 hours ahead of New York and 16 hours ahead of LA. An hour is added to daylight savings time.

Tipping:  Tipping is not required but is a common practice for all service personnel, dive guides, and boat captains.

Transportation: There is no public transportation system in Palau. Sam’s Tours will provide Kids Sea Camp guests with complimentary roundtrip hotel and downtown shuttle service for things outside KSC activities. Taxi service is also readily available up until 10:00 pm and fares are very reasonable. Arrangements are easily made in advance for a taxi service after 10:00 pm. For all Kids Sea Camp activities transportation is provided as needed.

Quarantine Restrictions:  As Palau’s unique island eco-system is very susceptible to invasive specifies there are tight restrictions on fresh fruits, vegetables, plants, meats, and other possible sources of contamination. Do not bring these items to Palau as they are subject to immediate confiscation.

Drugs:  Anti-drug laws are enforced. Prescriptions should be carried for any particular medicines or drugs in your possession.

PPEF: Palau Pristine Paradise Environmental Fee is new as of 2018. This is a $100 fee per person that is included in your airline ticket.

Departure Tax:  Palau has a departure tax of $50.00 USD which is included in all Kids Sea Camp package pricing, and a representative from Sam’s Tours will be on hand during departure to organize this.

Where is Palau? The Republic of Palau is 900 miles southwest of Guam and 400 miles south of Yap at the western-most edge of Micronesia. Palau is north of New Guinea and east of the Philippines. We fly from LAX or HNL to Guam and then a quick stop in YAP and onto Palau. It's a long way to go, but well worth it when you get there. My suggestion would be to extend your stay by a few days if you can.

Are there any taxes or fees not included in the price? Yes. The airport departure tax is $35 US and is paid upon departure. These fees are levied by the Palau Government and are subject to change without notice. They are not included in the charter rate.

Do I need a passport? U.S. citizens are required to have a passport for international travel. For details on travel requirements for U.S. citizens, please visit the U.S. State Department’s website. Non-U.S. citizens should check with the appropriate consulate.

If I book diving with Sam’s Tours through Family Dive Adventures and Kids Sea Camp will I pay more?  No. There is no surcharge for booking our services through our professional travel partner. Booking through Kids Sea Camp can save you money on air/hotel/diving packages and help you plan a good itinerary.

Is there a store in town? Yes. There are two large and very well stocked supermarkets and department stores in the center of town. There are also lots of convenience stores all around town. The stores stay open until 9:00 pm.

What type of electrical power do you have? Palau uses 110 Volt electricity with the same type of outlets as the U.S. At the dive center, we also have a 220 Volt service.

Palau is more than just diving

Our service is first class. We offer free shuttle service to and from all hotels in Koror. Every tour begins with a review of our tour menu, and we do our best to honor requests. After a brief orientation to the kayaks and paddles, we are swept into the rock islands by speedboat shuttle to begin our adventure.

  • WWII History Tour

Palau has much to offer in addition to diving. With a wealth of beautiful scenery, ancient culture, traditional villages, historic sites, tropical flora and fauna, and many endemic birds and other creatures, there is much to see and do outdoors. Sam’s Tours offers a variety of scenic trips to a variety of sites, including the spectacular waterfalls at Ngardmau, the ancient stone monoliths at Badrulchau dating back to 161 A.D., tropical jungle trails to German Lighthouse or the WWII sites and reinforcements of Peleliu island. Sam’s Tours can customize a one-day tour or a weeklong adventure to offer you a pleasant mix of fun, adventure, and relaxation.

The island is filled with World War II history. We’ll make that history lesson fun and informative by taking you to some of the most exciting sites in Palau. The trip to German Lighthouse is just one of many places you can experience first hand Palau's role in World War II history. This forested walk follows a path constructed by the Japanese during WWII and leads to forgotten relics from the war; secretive bunkers, massive cannons, and the rock island headquarters filled with relics. Along with other hidden treasures, this exploration is guaranteed to satiate the WWII enthusiasts.

The reward at the top of the island is a century-old coral-built lighthouse constructed during the German occupation. The look-out from the top of the lighthouse gives you a birds-eye view of most of the archipelago.

Palau dive trip

Just spent 6 days diving with Sam’s tours Firstly my comments are not to offend but to help with future divers We are a team of 13 drivers including 2 new open water divers All the rest was made up of 2x instructors 3x diver masters and the rest advanced divers All excluding the newbies are wreck certified with a minimum of 100 wreck dives some with over 1000 me personally over 500 wreck dives We where told we couldn’t dive in the wrecks we where given a new excuse every day until we simply said enough is enough Finally they said if we knew you wanted to dive wrecks we could of prepared for you We said your kidding we have been asking everyday It was only on the second last day we where taken to wrecks 3 in total So if you are a wreck diver make sure this made perfectly clear before you book We dived plenty of reefs drift dives caves drop offs Saw plenty don’t remember all the names but the guides look after us

I lead international dive trips and have been to Palau twice now. Each time Sam’s has treated us like family and showed us an amazing and unforgettable time. Thanks again for the great memories! Shout out to Sharon!

We booked our entire Palau snorkelling (5 full day private) and kayaking (3 full day with group) trip through Sam’s Tours. From the start the service was excellent. Aireen was prompt in her correspondence and put together a great itinerary for us. Neil, our guide was very knowledgeable and personable. He, along with Sicsei our Captain, made our snorkelling excursions fun and memorable. We saw a lot of amazing and wonderful fish and coral and Neil made the underwater world fascinating by pointing out different fish behaviours that we wouldn’t have recognized ourselves. We are still amazed at how Sicsei spotted the crocodile from our fast moving boat!

Just finished a great 10 dive trip with Sam’s tours. The diving was excellent. We got to see bump head parrot fish in spawning aggregations and some of the best manta encounters I’ve seen anywhere in the world. Right up there with the Socorro islands. But the highlight was the staff and boat crew. They were outstanding. Truly wonderful friendly people. Giggles was probably the most competent tour leader I’ve ever had the pleasure of diving with.

Did a daylong snorkel trip with Sams. Staff was friendly knowledgeable and accommodating. Our divemaster highlighted points of interest along the way. They allowed us some flexibility in where we would stop. I think there were 6 or 7 dive sites in all. Saw the Milky Way, sharks, soft coral, giant clams, a shipwreck and healthy reefs. Probably the best snorkeling trip I have ever had.

Took one of the snorkeling tours with Jordy. It was wonderful. Saw great fish and snorkeling sites. Even more impressive was when a participant (who had the bends 2 weeks before) experienced them again during the trip. The crew got her oxygen and immediately got her back to Korror where an ambulance was waiting. We went back out after that and continued to have a great time. Kudos to them!
