Located on New Providence Island, Nassau's sightseeing opportunities, crystal clear blue waters, and white sand beaches make it a truly remarkable tropical vacation destination. This city serves as the heart of the Bahamas and is near Paradise Island, Blue Lagoon Island, Salt Cay, Rose Island, Ardastra Gardens, Cable Beach, and Arawak Cay. Rich History

This historic Caribbean city is one of the world's most popular cruise and snorkeling destinations, and it's easy to see why. Around one million travelers board Caribbean cruise ships that travel to Nassau every year! With these staggering numbers, it's easy to see that Nassau is truly a spot you won't want to miss. Not to mention the remarkable historical sites, like the Queen's Staircase. A 66-step major landmark in Nassau, it was carved out of solid limestone rock between 1793 and 1794. Located at the Fort Fincastle Historic Complex, the staircase is within walking distance from downtown and perfect for small group tours.

TESTIMONIALS

tours of nassau bahamas

“This tour has been the highlight of our trip. Mikey was our guide and he was very knowledgeable about the history of rum in the Bahamas. We did everything on the tour and was also able to make a few unscheduled stops to shop. Mikey was very accommodating and a lot of fun. Would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Bahamas. Ask for Mikey!"

Renee G, Tripadvisor

“An amazing tour! Mikey was great and took us to great locations. Great food and rum! A lot of history and great humour! Mikey was great at going with the group. We explored the distillery, down town, chocolate, cigar and wine tasting as well as stops at shops we wanted to go in! Looked at local art and made a bahama mama! Worth every penny and a great addition to our honeymoon. Definitely recommend to everyone visiting Nassau and request Mikey! "

Charlotte Gill, Tripadvisor

“What an amazing excursion. We visited John Watling distillery, had a tour and a lot of history told to us. We walked to downtown, ate local food, went to a candy shop, and SO many rum tastings. The tour guides were absolutely amazing. Would recommend this for anyone of drinking age. So much fun.”

This was a great tour. I wanted to see Nassau and the area, and that's exactly what I received. Tyrone was great, such a sweet man. His staff was wonderful, warm and friendly. Once we disembarked from the cruise ship, it took just a minute to find his location, and all the other vendors knew him and pointed the way to the meeting place at the fountain. We were greeted by warm smiles and offered a cold beverage. Our driver, Kevin was great also. The rum distillery was my favorite, such a idyllic location. People complained about the chocolate factory, stating the samples were small, but it's a small business! If they gave out large pieces, they wouldn't have any left to sell!
It was a great experience since it was a first time visit to the island for most of us. Gave the highlights and driving around taught us some history of the island. If you want to see the aquarium at Atlantis this is not your tour. But it was nice to walk through the resort. We had five teenagers and my 10 year old son and they all enjoyed the tour. No one was bored. It was very easy to find them right outside the port and we had time to shop and walk through the straw market after the tour.

The Nassau Cruise Port: Travel Tips and Things To Do

T he Bahamas is an extremely popular travel destination in the West Atlantic Ocean. The relatively small tropical paradise borders Haiti, Cuba, the United States and Turks and Caicos. The capital city of the Bahamas, Nassau is located on New Providence Island and is a tourism hub. Nassau has established itself as a thriving cultural center and well known cruise ship stop. The destination is popular for its gorgeous white sand beaches and overall naturally beautiful landscape, which is perfect for water sports and waterside relaxation. The pristine coral reef and the possibility of exciting close encounters with marine life are some of the reasons Nassau is a great place to visit.

Due to Nassau’s highly frequented dock, visitors may be under a time limit if they travel by boat or have to deal with crowds during port days. While many tourists only get to enjoy Nassau’s unique offerings during short periods of time, there are ways to best utilize time in the capital city. So, we have compiled some insightful information about the destination and how travelers can make the most of their trip, whether they are cruisers or looking to have a long term stay near the Nassau Cruise Port (NCP) .

Is the Nassau Cruise Port Popular?

Nassau’s cruise port is one of the most popular ports in the world. Each year it attracts nearly 4 million cruise passengers . The port even recently (the first phase opened to the public in 2023) underwent a redevelopment, which has contributed to its popularity and overall appeal. These improvements include the construction of many new buildings which have been strategically planned and placed to improve the flow of traffic.

The taxi dispatch center and optimized shopping strip are just some of the upgrades that lead into downtown Nassau. Ports with the latest accommodations and high quality attractions certainly reap the benefits of modernization, since more tourists consider the site to be much more welcoming and safe.

What Cruise Lines Dock at Nassau’s Cruise Port?

The cruise port has the capacity to accommodate six cruise ships a day. This includes three oasis class or icon class vessels. The larger icon class ships hold more passengers (and are usually taller and longer) while oasis class ships are typically wider with more features. The increased tourist capacity is due to the ports’ expanded waterfront, which was completed through a $300 million dollar project.

Travelers have plenty of options since there is an array of cruise lines that dock at this Nassau port. The Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Virgin Voyages, Norwegian, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, MSC, Holland America, Azamara and Fred Olsen cruise lines stop in Nassau.

Things To Do in Nassau, Bahamas

There are plenty of things to do near the popular Nassau Cruise Port. Some of the most popular tours include rum tasting experiences, sunset cruises and jet skiing. Both sunset cruises and jet skiing offer visitors of the Bahamas stellar views of the crystal clear waters. Rum tasting is a popular tour in Nassau due to the historical and cultural information that travelers can learn by sampling authentic Bahamian rum and learning from locals.

Other travelers that prefer self-led exploration may enjoy the Pirates of Nassau Museum, Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre or National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. These sites highlight the environmental, cultural and historical significance of Nassau and are top attractions of the area.

There are a few outdoor attractions that are considered top experiences in Nassau. Travelers can swim with island pigs, which has become a very adorable and picturesque experience. The crystal clear waters of the Bahamas adds to the tranquil and playful nature of the cute pigs that roam the island. Jaw’s Beach is one of the highest rated waterside sites for snorkeling and soaking in the sun. This beach is less crowded and visitors may even be lucky enough to witness marine life like the sea turtle and manta ray.

Transportation

Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) is only a few miles away from the port. Even travelers that are unfamiliar with the island should not have trouble flying in and getting a ride to their accomodation. Taxis are the most common mode of transportation for the tourist friendly city.

Since many visitors come from cruises that are docked there, many visiting travelers use taxis to get around the port. There is high traffic near the port, so there are many taxis available in the area. The taxi rates are set, so although travelers may notice prices vary by their particular destination they are unlikely to run into drivers that overcharge. For cruise passengers, it may be more affordable to secure transportation with the company that any tours are booked with. This ensures that they will not have to deal with additional stress and can simply sit back and relax.

There are also buses that are locally known as jitneys and are a popular form of public transportation. But riding the bus to and from excursions means that travelers will have to depend on the bus stop schedule and routes. For some, this lack of autonomy may be less than appealing so travelers should be sure that their itinerary can handle standardized traveling times and differing rates depending on the destination.

This Gorgeous Island in the Bahamas Has Ultra-exclusive Hotels, Fresh Seafood, and the Largest Concentration of Blue Holes in the World

How to plan a perfect trip to Andros Island in the Bahamas, including where to stay, what to do, and when to visit.

SHansche/Getty Images

The largest of the Bahamas’ 30 inhabited islands, Andros encompasses 100 miles of clear coastline, abundant wildlife, and an intricate underwater system that sits close to the third-largest barrier reef in the world. But despite its size, the island, composed of North Andros, Mangrove Cay, and South Andros, has plenty of unpopulated stretches, without a cruise ship or all-inclusive in sight. Instead, visitors can expect deserted beaches and flats that make the destination the bonefishing capital of the world.

As the gateway to a deepwater basin called the Tongue of the Ocean, diving in the sweeping Andros Barrier Reef is one of the best things to do in the Bahamas , alongside exploring the largest concentration of blue sinkholes in the region (and the world).

The island’s colorful capital, North Andros, is home to a Seminole Indian population that specializes in woodwork and hand-dyeing cotton Androsia fabric. And in Central Andros, historical sites include the over century-old St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the dive-ready Blue Holes National Park.

There are also accommodations for every type of traveler, from private island hideaways to world-renowned fishing lodges. In fact, Andros’ hotels are as desirable as the island itself: Both Kamalame Cay and Caerula Mar Club landed on Travel + Leisure 's list of favorite Caribbean resorts in 2023 .

If you time your visit right, you can even attend one of the annual events, like June's All Andros Crab Festival and May’s Red Bays Snapper Tournament , where the island’s native Seminole Indians compete in basket-weaving and fishing competitions . “Andros is a truly wonderful place. It’s a remote location nestled on the western side of the Bahamas, where you can enjoy great fishing and food,” says Cheryl Bastian, owner of Swain's Cay Lodge in Mangrove Cay. “Androsians are hospitable and their greatest wish is for you to enjoy your stay.”

Here’s how to do just that on Andros, including where to stay, what to do, and the best time to visit.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Andros is home to the most blue holes in the world, accessible both inland and offshore.
  • Indulge in a private island jaunt at the ultra-exclusive, 96-acre retreat of Kamalame Cay in North Andros.
  • Pair the quintessential Bahamian conch with a Kalik beer at seaside Shine’s Conch Shack.
  • Head to North Andros, the only western settlement that’s home to the descendants of the Seminole Indians of Florida.
  • The island hosts fun events like the All Andros Crab Fest come summer.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Courtesy of Caerula Mar Club

Caerula Mar Club

The beachfront Caerula Mar Club features 18 warm-toned rooms and four villas on the remote South Andros — home to about 2,000 residents. There are two on-site casual eateries — Driff’s Beach Bar and Switcha — plus Lusca, a Caribbean-inspired fine-dining establishment. The passion project was envisioned by HGTV's Bryan and Sarah Baeumler, who describe the hotel as “barefoot luxury.”

Kamalame Cay

This 96-acre private island haven has 22 rooms and suites that include a mix of cottages, bungalows, and Balinese-style beach houses. Guests receive their own golf carts to explore the island, as well as get access to water sports like kayaking, fishing, and snorkeling. Plus, the property is coveted for its prime location near the Andros Barrier Reef.

Small Hope Bay Lodge

Located in Central Andros, Small Hope Bay Lodge overlooks the Andros Barrier Reef, offering world-class diving, including shark and night dives. The 21 all-inclusive rooms sit directly on a beach that's just 15 minutes from wall dives and deep, open drops. The lodge is also a mere six miles from the popular Cousteau and Captain Bill’s Blue Holes.

Swain's Cay Lodge

The Bahamian-owned Swain's Cay Lodge in Mangrove Cay is a favorite for bonefishing and aquatic adventurers. Owner Cheryl Bastian is happy to coordinate excursions, including picnic lunches and wildlife spotting. As for its culinary assets, the on-site Reefside Restaurant & Bar offers beachside dining.

Tiamo Resort

Accessible only by seaplane or boat, this 14-room resort on South Andros offers luxury accommodations and French-inspired cuisine. Raise a red flag and a butler will come to your thatched-roof villa just steps away from the beach. Surrounded by 125 acres of nature preserve, the eco-chic resort also has activities such as reef fishing, diving, and wakeboarding.

Best Things to Do

Reinhard Dirscherl/ullstein bild via Getty Images

Delve into world-class scuba diving.

The Andros Barrier Reef is the world’s third-longest barrier reef, teeming with vibrant marine life that can be viewed on dive excursions for more than 130 miles. With a large concentration of blue holes and caverns, you won’t have any trouble discovering the rich reef system and landscapes below.

Try deep-sea and fly fishing.

Known as the bonefish capital of the world, Andros is home to a collection of natural flats, particularly on the north and west side of the island. Catch and release a bonefish or fish for bigger game like yellowfin tuna and barracuda. “Our fishing product is resilient, and the avid anglers who travel worldwide come back again year after year to seek the thrilling adventure of the bonefish, tarpon, and elusive permit,” says Bastian.

Explore national parks.

Andros has five protected national parks, including West Side National Park, which stretches more than 1.5 million acres with dense mangroves and a nursery habitat that’s critical to the bonefishing ecosystem. There’s also the Blue Holes National Park, home to 40,000 acres that include freshwater reservoirs and blue holes.

Discover the blue holes.

There are more than 180 of these natural wonders on the island, and some popular spots include the Stargate Blue Hole, El Dorado, and Benjamin’s Blue Hole. Many hotels and diving sites also offer tours into these underwater relics.

Best Restaurants

Insung Jeon/Getty Images

Shine’s Conch Shack

This popular seaside shack is owned by Ornald "Shine" Greene, a bonefishing guide who's happy to tell a story or two about the island. During certain times, you’ll even catch fishermen loading their catch of the day and taking it directly to the restaurant. Make sure to order the conch or ceviche, best washed down with an ice-cold Kalik beer.

Brigadier's Restaurant

This scenic restaurant has over-water seating on a pier at Dream Villas in Central Andros. The menu features both Bahamian and American cuisine, including cracked conch and chicken fettuccine. Enjoy the soothing sound of waves in this casual, alfresco setting that specializes in fresh seafood.

Millie’s Takeaway

For a taste of South Androsian food, head to resident Millie’s restaurant. Here, visitors can enjoy conch burgers, Johnny cakes, and a number of other Bahamian foods. You can take your food to go and enjoy it on a nearby beach.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Andros for good weather is mid-December to April, but it’s important to note this is also the high season, which sees more crowds and higher prices. The summer months of June and July feature big festivals, like the All Andros & Berry Islands Regatta and All Andros Crab Fest.

How to Get There

Airlines such as Aztec Airways, Makers Air, Titan Air, and LeAir Charter offer weekly flights directly to Andros Town Airport (ASD) from Nassau, Bahamas, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. To get to San Andros Airport (SAQ) in North Andros, book a flight on Western Air from Nassau, or Aztec Airways from the U.S. LeAir flies to South Andros Airport (TZN).

How to Get Around

Rental cars and vans are available, with prices starting at $85 per day for the former and $120 per day for the latter. Note that some companies may require a deposit. There are no buses or other forms of public transportation on Andros. Taxi cabs are readily available at each airport on arrival.

Man booked a flight from the Bahamas to Toronto just to try Keith Lee's favourite restaurant

Latest Videos

Keith Lee may have officially wrapped up the Toronto leg of his FamiLEE world tour (after g iving the city a glowing review , might I add,) but the Keith Lee Effect is still alive and well in the city.

In what could quite possibly be the most extreme case of Lee's influence, a Bahamian man recently uploaded a video to TikTok showing him booking a flight to Toronto just to try a restaurant Lee featured.

The TikTok user, who goes by VocabBahamas on the app, shows himself watching Lee's review of Old Nassau , a Weston-Mount Dennis Bahamian restaurant, and deeming it the best restaurant he had yet tried in the city .

"And that's when I got to thinking," he says in the video, "what if I fly there myself and try it?"

He then proceeds to book a plane ticket from Nassau, Bahamas to Toronto at 1 a.m. after seeing the video, setting off shortly thereafter.

When he arrives at the restaurant, he orders "everything that Keith Lee had," ( not an uncommon occurrence at Old Nassau in the days since the review went live) going as far as to recreate the outfit Lee wore in the review — tattoos and all.

@vocabbahamas242 I popped up to Old Nassau in toronto #keithlee #oldnassau #bahamiantiktok #bahamiantiktok🇧🇸 #viral #vocabbahamas #242 #vocabbahamas #@Old Nassau #keithleetoronto #keithleeeffect @Keith Lee ♬ original sound - VocabBahamas

It looks like the food at Old Nassau holds up, even when reviewed by someone who's had plenty of Bahamian food in his time — VocabBahamas also gave the restaurant his seal of approval.

Hurricane Hunters: ‘Prepare ahead of 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season’

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – While local and international meteorologists are unable to say at this time how active the upcoming 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season will be, officials from the National Hurricane Center in the United States have urged Bahamians to understand the importance of preparing ahead of the upcoming hurricane season.

Director at the National Hurricane Center Michael Brennan said Tuesday morning that the National Oceanic and Atomospheric Administration is expected to release the official forecast for this year’s Atlantic Hurricane Season in May.

The National Hurricane Center has selected The Bahamas as one of the Caribbean countries to be visited by its Hurricane Reconnaisance Aircraft on its annual tour of the region.

The c-130 aircraft arrived at Odyssey Aviation, Tuesday April 16, 2024, piloted by Hurricane Hunters who are part of the U.S Air Force Reserve. The aircraft is specifically designed to fly into the eye of hurricanes.
