The site overlooks the awe-inspiring wild Atlantic Ocean which pounds against the base of the cliffs. The landscape itself, made of rock and bog has been forged and weathered by the climate, the sea and the elements, and charts the movement and changing of the earth’s very surface over millions and millions of years. You can imagine how the land looked when the first farmers were living off the land here.

Céide Fields state-of-the-art immersive experience

As part of the ‘People and Places of North Mayo’ video series, hear the fascinating story of the remarkable Céide Fields and meet the wonderful Gretta Byrne – Archaeologist and Manager of the award winning, newly renovated Céide Fields Visitor Centre.

Why A Visit To The 6,000 Year-Old Ceide Fields In Mayo Is Well Worth It

By Author Gillian Birch

Why A Visit To The 6,000 Year-Old Ceide Fields In Mayo Is Well Worth It

I’d argue that a visit to the Ceide Fields is one of the most overlooked things to do in Mayo .

The Ceide Fields are a remarkable neolithic site standing on limestone and shale cliffs 113 metres above the Atlantic Ocean in County Mayo.

They are thought to be the oldest-known field system in the world and were discovered by accident in the 1930s.

In the guide below, you’ll discover everything you need to know about visiting the Ceide Fields in Mayo, from how much tickets cost to what to see nearby.

Some quick need-to-knows before visiting the Ceide Fields in Mayo

Although a visit to the Ceide Fields is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

Located on the north coast of County Mayo, the Ceide Fields is a Signature Discovery Point on the Wild Atlantic Way . With dramatic views of the Atlantic Ocean, this clifftop Neolithic site is 14km west of Downpatrick Head and 34km northwest of the town of Ballina .

2. A whole lot of history

We usually measure history in centuries, but the Ceide Fields date back 6,000 years to around 4,000 BCE. The site is on cliffs that are even older – estimated to be 300 million years old!

3. Oldest field system on earth

This extensive Stone Age monument is the oldest-known field system in the world. It includes megalithic tombs, stone-walled fields and dwellings preserved for millennia beneath blanket bogs. This Neolithic settlement was discovered by schoolteacher Patrick Caulfield in the 1930s while he was cutting peat.

4. Admission

Ceide Fields charges a modest admission of €5 for adults, €4 for seniors and €3 for students and children (prices may change).

5. Opening times

The Visitor Centre is open daily from mid-March to May 17; June 1st to September 18th and October 1st to November 17th. It is closed throughout the winter.

A speedy history of the Ceide Fields

ceide fields history

I’ll never do the history of the Ceide Fields in Mayo justice with a handful of paragraphs – the section below is intended to give you a little insight into their past.

Who lived at Ceide Fields

Careful excavation reveals that the Ceide Fields site was home to a large community of farmers who cleared the area of pine forest.

They reared cattle, grew crops and were craftsmen in wood and stone. The bog shows evidence that the climate was much warmer at that time, around 4000BCE.

The discovery of the Ceide Fields

The Ceide Fields were discovered in the 1930s by local schoolteacher Patrick Caulfield when cutting peat for fuel. He uncovered clearly defined walls of stone buried beneath the blanket bogs.

The site was only fully investigated in the 1970s by Patrick’s son, Seamus*, a trained archaeologist. Investigations revealed a site of human habitation of unparalleled historical significance with walled fields and megalithic tombs.

*This father and son were the first to land by helicopter on Dun Briste sea stack and explore the remains of homes, fields and flora there.

Things to see and do at the Ceide Fields

One of the reasons you’ll often see us describing the Ceide Fields as one of the most overlooked places to visit in Mayo is down to the sheer number of things there is to see here.

1. The Visitor Centre

The modern Ceide Fields Visitor Centre opened in May 1993. It has award-winning architecture in a pyramid shape rising from the peat bog.

It was constructed from natural durable materials to complement the sensitive environment. It includes a glass observation tower which offers superb views across the archaeological site to the Atlantic Ocean and Stags of Broadhaven (islets).

The Visitor Centre has exhibits of geological, botanical and human history along with a 4,300-year-old Scots pine that was preserved in the bog. It also has a tea room for enjoying the wonderful clifftop setting.

2. The panoramic viewing platform

You can enjoy the Visitor Centre in all weathers as it has viewing platforms both indoors and outside on the glass-topped roof of the building. Both platforms offer dramatic views of the Ceide Fields site and the Atlantic Ocean from this breathtaking clifftop location.

3. Tours

As well as an audio-visual presentation, the Visitor Centre offers guided tours on pathways over the bog. Visitors can clearly see the walled fields, a domestic enclosure and a pen for animals.

Tours include a hands-on interactive experience using metal rods to poke down through the peat bog and feel the stone walls buried below.

You can also learn about the biodiversity of the bog with its mosses, lichens, orchids and bog plants. Learn how a Scots pine was preserved in the bog for over 4,300 years! You can also ask questions as part of the tour.

Things to do near the Ceide Fields

One of the beauties of the Ceide Fields is that it’s a short spin away from a clatter of other attractions, both man-made and natural.

Below, you’ll find a handful of things to see and do a stone’s throw from the Ceide Fields (plus places to eat and where to grab a post-adventure pint!).

1. Downpatrick Head

what to see near the ceide fields

Photos by Wirestock Creators (Shutterstock)

Located on the Wild Atlantic Way, Downpatrick Head overlooks the famous Dun Briste sea stack just 220 metres offshore. There’s a large car park and seasonal coffee shop for visitors. The headland is the site of a ruined church, statue to St Patrick, WW2 lookout post and a spectacular blowhole, so plenty of reasons to visit!

2. The Mullet Peninsula

The remote Mullet Peninsula is a well-hidden gem 47km west of Ceide Fields. Seemingly surrounded by ocean, it offers endless unspoiled scenery. The windswept, treeless landscape looks out across Broadhaven Bay to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Discover more in our guide to the best things to do in Belmullet .

3. Benwee Head

The steep quartzite cliffs, arches and chimneys at Benwee Cliffs have earned the nickname Yellow Cliffs, due to their odd colour. If you do the Benwee Loop walk you’ll be treated to remarkable views across Broadhaven Bay over the course of 5+ hours.

4. Belleek Castle

belleek castle

Now a luxury hotel and award-winning restaurant, Belleek Castle is a magnificent Neo-Gothic manor built in 1825 for Sir Arthur Francis Knox-Gore at a cost of £10,000. Eventually abandoned, the ruin was bought in 1961 and restored by craftsman, smuggler and sailor Marshall Doran.

5. Belleek Woods

Enjoy walking or cycling along waymarked trails through Belleek Woods on the banks of the River Moy. Surrounding Belleek Castle, the 200-acre woodland is a natural haven with primroses, bluebells, foxgloves and wild garlic marking the seasons. Landmarks include the Knox-Gore Monument, known as the “Horse’s Grave”, and the stranded concrete boat.

It costs Euro 5 to enter and it is a complete waste of time and money. There are hardly any walls and the few there are at ground level. Very little is known about them and therefore the information center can't tell you anything about them.

Perched on stunning sea cliffs near the village of Ballycastle along the west coast of County Mayo, you’ll find a site of great historical significance.

Submerged under a blanket bog, Céide Fields is a fascinating series of megalithic tombs and dwellings dating back over 6,000 years.

At a glance, it may seem like a normal blanket bog, but this incredible place is home to one of the oldest stone-walled field systems in the world – an amazing Stone Age wonder that predates the pyramids by more than 2,000 years.

Here, all those years ago, farmers built walls, sowed seeds and harvested crops, giving us a unique connection to the ancient past.

The Belderrig Valley Experience is a great way to delve further into the Céide Fields story. This fascinating walk unpacks the science, history and folklore that underpin this archaeological marvel.

The tour is run by Professor Séamus Caulfield, who has close ties to the Céide Fields site as it was his father who discovered the remains of the stone walls here back in 1934.

Séamus Caulfield, now an archaeologist, returned to the site in 1969 and began excavations – devising a system of mapping the lines of the stone walls without removing the peat bog.

The Caulfields unearthed a fascinating site of great historical significance, and to this day, County Mayo’s Céide Fields remain one of the most striking destinations on the island of Ireland.

Ceide Fields Visitor Centre

ceide fields guided tour

The Céide Fields (Irish: Achaidh Chéide) is an area situated on the north Mayo coast in the west of Ireland. This location contains one of the oldest known field systems in the world. Using various dating methods, it was discovered that the creation and development of the Céide Fields goes back some five thousand years. This dates them before the building of the pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge.

Visit the multi-award winning Centre, which has exhibitions, audio-visual show and tearooms and take a guided tour with our professional guides and discover a buried wall for yourself using a centuries old method of probing. Experience the unique ecology of the bogland, with it's colourful mosses, sedges, lichens, heathers, flowers and insect-eating sundews while listening to the larks. Find out the fascinating story of an ever-changing landscape, such as why bogs grow and the huge influence a subtle change in climate can bring about.

History The discovery of the Céide Fields originally began in the 1930s when a local man, schoolteacher Patrick Caulfield, noticed piles of stones which were uncovered as he cut away turf for fuel. In these piles he saw some design which could not have been haphazard. While this meant nothing to others, Caulfield noted that the stones had to have been placed by people, because their configuration was clearly unnatural and deliberate. Furthermore, they were positioned below the bog, which meant they were there before the bog developed, implying a very ancient origin.

The unravelling of the true significance of this discovery did not begin for another forty years when Patrick's son, Seamus, having studied Archaeology, began to investigate further. What was revealed in the ongoing investigations was a complex of fields, houses and megalithic tombs concealed by the growth of blanket bogs over the course of many centuries.

Research and preservation: In order to preserve the site and ensure the continuation of research, a simple method was utilised to explore the fields. This involved the location and mapping of these hidden walls by a specially developed simple and completely non-destructive method of probing with iron rod. The ensuing excavation of habitation sites and tombs is yielding a unique picture of the way of life of our ancestors 200 generations ago. We now know that they were a large, highly organised, peaceful community of farmers who worked together on clearing hundreds of acres of forestry and dividing the land into regular field systems[citation needed]. Their main economy was cattle rearing but they were skilled craftspeople and builders in both wood and stone and also had strong spiritual beliefs.

From data gathered it was discovered that these people arrived in a land with a substantial forest canopy. This was cleared to provide access to arable land and to provide building material and firewood. This clearance continued onward and outward away from the area in continuing procurement of firewood.

The climate at the time was much warmer, leading to almost year round growth potential. Samples taken from the remains of trees found in the bog provide ample evidence of this.

For a while, these people prospered, but some changes led to the development of raised bogs and the transformation of the arable land into barren and unusable land. It is speculated that the removal of the tree canopy helped cause this change. Where tree cover is substantial, most of the rain dropped on the land never reaches the ground. Instead it stays on the top of the canopy and is either absorbed or evaporates back into the atmosphere. With the removal of the forests, all of the rain reached the ground and, it is believed, bleached the earth of its nutrients. This idea is supported by the presence of a pan in the sub-soil over the area of the Céide Fields.

VISIT THE LARGEST NEOLITHIC ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE IN THE WORLD

Céide Fields is the world’s largest and most extensive Neolithic site. Dating back 5,000 years, the remains of walls, dwellings, tombs and field systems have since been excavated. This archaeological discovery offers a window into the lives of settlers from 3,000 BC.

Settlers from that time cleared the forest and laid out pastures and farmsteads. Since then, the dwellings of Céide Fields have been covered in wild boglands and a thick layer of turf. The stone-walled fields extend over thousands of acres and are some of the oldest in the world.

Discover what lies below the bogs and vegetation by taking a guided tour, or simply pop into the Visitor Centre. The exhibition at the centre reveals the mysterious background of the Stone Age constructions.

Both the tour and Visitor Centre provide an insight into life in Céide Fields and the archaeological discoveries that allow us to know more about the history of the site.

You may also want to visit the viewing platform overlooking the nearby cliffs. The platform sits at the edge of a 110-metre spectacular cliffside.

An entrance fee is required for this site.

A Mayo Wild Atlantic Way Discovery Point

Ceide Fields is a bogland reserve area where the remains of the oldest known field systems in the world, a Stone Age landscape of stone walled fields, houses and megalithic tombs over 5,000 years old, are preserved beneath a layer of blanket bog over thousands of acres in North county Mayo.

The Ceide Fields were orginally discovered in the 1930s by a local schoolteacher, Patrick Caulfield, who while cutting turf, noticed piles of stones regularly stacked under the turf. He realised that these stones must have been laid down by earlier settlers and that they were very ancient because the turf, which takes thousands of years to form, was on top of them.

The schoolteachers son, Seamus Caulfield, went on to become an archaeologist and began studying  the stones 40 years after his father had originally discovered them.

The Visitor Centre is an award winning building located beside spectacular 370ft high cliffs and houses an exhibition and guided tour which tells the story of the ancient archaelogy of the site and botany and geology of the area. There is a viewing platform on the roof of the building offering stunning views. An ancient 4,300 year old Scots Pine is in the centre of the building.

Stunning Céide Fields Visitor Centre re-opens

The visitor centre at one of the world’s most extensive Stone Age monuments on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way has re-opened after a major facelift.

ceide fields guided tour

The unique and extensive Céide Fields in northern County Mayo is a Neolithic archaeological site of international significance, celebrated for its complex and extensive remains of ancient field systems and habitations.

At a glance, the site seems like a normal Irish blanket bog, but this wild and incredible place is home to one of the oldest stone-walled field systems in the world.

Hidden beneath the blanket of bog, the Céide Fields is the most extensive Stone Age monument in the world. It is a “landscape fossilised ”, as poet Seamus Heaney described it in Belderg, of stone-walled fields, dwelling houses and megalithic monuments. There is nowhere else in the world with such evidence of how the first farmers farmed the land; only at the Céide Fields can visitors get a unique insight into the sophistication of the land management of Ireland’s Neolithic farming ancestors almost 6,000 years ago.

The transformative upgrade to the  Céide Fields Visitor Centre  is designed to transport visitors back in time to see one of Ireland’s oldest monuments in a fresh new light.

The upgrade includes state-of-the-art technology that provides a new and immersive virtual journey spanning thousands of years, from the hunter-gatherers who first appeared in the area to the present day.

The revamped exhibition and interpretation centre now also features artist reconstructions, video, replica artefacts and other different techniques to significantly enhance the experience of the site, while the dramatic 4,000-year-old pine tree that was unearthed from nearby bogland is retained.

The visitor centre also unpacks the amazing geology, archaeology, botany and wildlife of the unique Neolithic landscape and lets you investigate why bogs are formed and the huge influence a subtle change in climate can bring about.

Guided walking tours of the site are available, and there is a tearoom for refreshments.

The award-winning visitor centre is set against the stunning scenery of north County Mayo. Rugged cliffs, rust-coloured boglands, some of the most dramatic rock formations in Ireland and the majestic ocean views make a visit here something special.

ceide fields guided tour

A viewing platform has been erected beside the visitor centre among the 110m-high cliffs, offering epic panoramas. Standing on the cliffside, with the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean stretching into the horizon, feels like standing at the edge of the world.

When at the Stone Age site, a tour along the Céide Coast, regarded as one of the wildest parts of the Wild Atlantic Way, is well recommended, while another great way to delve into the Céide Fields story is to head to the nearby  Belderrig Valley Experience .

This fascinating walk unpacks the science, history and folklore that underpin the archaeological marvel. The tour is run by Professor Séamus Caulfield, who has close ties to the Céide Fields site, as it was his father who discovered the remains of the stone walls back in 1934.

Céide Fields

Why You Need to Visit the Amazing Céide Fields Ireland

Wander Your Way

The Céide Fields are one of the most fascinating sites in Ireland — maybe even in Europe.

While the site takes a bit of imagination, and a guide is a good idea, it’s really an incredible site.

So I hear you asking me, “Lynne, what exactly are these Seeda Fields and where is it?”

Well put your student hat on and let me tell you all about this site in Ireland.

Céide Fields

Where are the Céide Fields (and how the hell do you pronounce it)?

Let’s start with this — Céide is pronounced kay-ja.

One of those Irish words/translations that baffles the brain.

In Irish this spot is called Achaidh Chéide which means flat topped hill.

And that’s what the Céide Fields are — a flat topped hill — that also happens to sit above the Atlantic Ocean.

This site is located in the northern part of County Mayo, along the coast, and near the town of Ballycastle.

Northern County Mayo tends to not see as many visitors as other parts of the County nor as many travelers as other parts of Ireland.

But this area is rich in sites and natural beauty.

So now I hear you asking, “Okay. I know where it is and how it’s pronounced, but why are the Céide Fields worthy of my time and what the heck are they exactly?”

I’m so glad you asked.

What exactly are these Céide Fields?

This neolithic site contains stone walled fields dating back roughly 6000 years.

What does this mean?

It means that there was a farming community here 6000 years ago — so back in the Stone Age.

The implications of this mean that organized farming — a group of people coming together, planting crops, raising livestock — dates back much further than many scholars originally thought.

From the artifacts found, these people used wooden ploughs with a stone edge pulled by cattle (there were no horses in Ireland back then) to cultivate the earth.

It’s pretty cool to think that people 6000 years ago were actually growing their own food in this organized, thought out way.

So who found this site?

This is a great story.

If you know anything about this part of Ireland, then you know there is a lot of peat which is basically the turf here.

It’s bogland really — at least it has been for a long time.

Back in the 1800’s and early 1900’s people cut the turf/peat to burn in their fireplaces to heat their homes.

Well, back in the 1930’s near the village of Belderrig the local schoolmaster, Patrick Caulfield, kept coming across a lot of stones deep down in the bog as he was cutting the turf to heat his home.

He particularly noticed that the stones were in a uniform formation — so they weren’t just haphazardly in the earth.

Mr Caulfield also took note of how deep the stones were which indicated they must have been put there a very long time ago.

His son, Seamus, who studied archeology, years later investigated the area deeper and discovered the cultivated fields along with houses and tombs that had been under the earth for centuries.

Needless to say, it was quite the discovery!

Céide Fields

Follow My Adventures

Join me on facebook, the award winning visitor center.

I actually visited the Céide Fields a few years ago.

However I arrived a couple of days before the site was open to the public as it does close in winter.

I got lucky though as the B&B owner where I was staying knew someone pretty high up at the Céide Fields so I could visit — I just had to do it on my own.

The woman met me and gave me a brief overview of the Ceide Fields in the Visitor Center then I went outside to see the fields.

So while I had a little bit of time in the center, I didn’t get a lot of time.

However, what I saw was impressive.

First of all there is a 4000 year old pine tree in the middle of it.

This tree was unearthed from the nearby bogland.

The Visitor Center itself — the exterior and the interior — is made from natural materials — sandstone, oak, glass.

And Dr Seamus Caulfield — yes from above — helped spearhead the construction of the building.

There is a lot great information in this center, so don’t skip over it.

I’ll return to the Céide Fields and spend more time here and take a guided tour for sure.

Céide Fields

The stunning views

Even if you aren’t a history buff you still may want to explore the Céide Fields as the views from this site are amazing.

You really get a fabulous view of the North Mayo coast.

Cliffs, the roiling Atlantic, sea stacks, peaty bogland — the landscape is wild, beautiful and harsh all at once.

It’s really gorgeous — as long as the weather cooperates.

Céide Fields

It really is remarkable that people farmed in this area 6000+ years ago.

Of course, the weather would have been very different so the soil would have been different as well.

These days the land is not fertile.

But 6000 years ago it would have been another story.

Some of what you see are indentations in the soil where a structure was.

You will see stones lined up in places too.

It is helpful to use your imagination a bit as things are not fully intact nor have been reconstructed.

I find the Céide Fields to be really fascinating especially given the fact that the climate and thus the land is so different now.

Céide Fields

Final thoughts on the Céide Fields

I don’t remember how I found this site exactly, but knowing me I was simply looking for ancient sites in Ireland.

I did know that I wanted to visit this part of Ireland — County Mayo — on that trip.

And there it was on a map!

Upon further investigation I thought to myself, “This sounds really cool.”

I was so fortunate to actually visit it since it wasn’t yet open.

The travel gods were on my side.

I was so impressed by everything about the Céide Fields — from the stunning views to the beautiful Visitor Center to the walkway around the fields to the fields themselves.

This is one of Ireland’s historical treasures — and one that not enough travelers visit.

Hopefully you’ll now consider the Céide Fields for your trip to Ireland.

Céide Fields

Logistics for visiting the Céide Fields

Do check the website for opening times but typically this site doesn’t open fully to the public until early April and remains open until the end October.

In winter, the Céide Fields are open to group bookings only.

Hours are 10:00 to 17:00 in spring and autumn and 10:00 to 18:00 in summer.

Cost is €5 per person so it’s an inexpensive site (and worth every euro cent).

Because you are up on a cliff about 110m tall and right by the sea, do be prepared for crazy weather — rain, winds, cold.

This is Ireland!

Wear protective clothing and good shoes .

While you don’t need hiking boots, sturdy sneakers/ shoes — especially ones that have some waterproofing to them — will be helpful.

I’ve been interested in these sites since I moved to the UK. I find they have a fascinating and mysterious history. I did not know what you mentioned but if I go to Ireland I will save your article.

There are so many ancient sites in the British Isles. Do put the Céide Fields on your list. Plus the location is gorgeous!

Wow, hidden gem! I have never heard of this place and I loved hearing the history of it. The views look beautiful!

I agree that it’s hidden from the average traveler. I think school groups visit a lot. But it’s worthy of time, in my opinion.

I actually haven’t heard of this spot in Ireland before, but I love to visit historic sites and this one is probably the oldest one I have seen so far! Definitely one for the list.

I don’t know that I had heard of it until I found it on a map then read up on it. It’s pretty cool!

Céide Fields is an archaeological site with Neolithic remains of great historical interest. Archaeologists believe it to be the largest Neolithic site in the world. Now open to visitors, it’s well worth the detour!

History of Céide Fields

A late but monumental discovery.

It wasn’t until 1935 that Patrick Caulfield, an Irish peat miner, discovered the peculiar presence of stones buried beneath the thick layer of bog. These stones are stacked and arranged in an unnatural way, and presume to have been arranged by a human hand. Interested, Patrick Caulfield decided to talk to his son, Seamus Caulfield.

The latter then innocently withholds this information when he’s just a child. A few years later, he became an archaeologist and in the 1970s began work on the hill. And that’s when he makes the most fantastic discovery of his career: the hill actually contains countless tombs, altars, low walls and other skilfully stored stone arrangements. After a few studies, archaeologists and researchers determined that the site was once inhabited by farmers.

Visit Céide Fields

A hill invaded by peat… and megalithic constructions.

Céide Fields is a gigantic hill made up of peat bogs and Neolithic remains. Among them are countless low stone walls, circles, altars and megalithic tombs dating back 5,000 years, representing a veritable cultural and archaeological treasure trove for the world to see.

Situated just outside Ballycastle, on the edge of breathtakingly beautiful cliffs, Céide Fields is a truly exceptional site. You’ll be delighted by its wild setting and the beauty of its ancient remains, a true testimony to past life.

The figures that characterize Céide Fields are quite impressive: during your visit, you’ll learn that the site is made up of almost 500,000 tons of stone, all arranged and structured according to a precise logic, and thus forming a living space where the local population would have lived for quite an extended period in history.

The site, fabulous as it is, was only discovered belatedly. In the early 1930s, the site was regarded as a simple hill surrounded and invaded by peat , a natural organic substance frequently exploited by the Irish. There was no apparent clue to the fantastic legacy left by these Stone Age ancestors.

If you decide to visit Céide Field, a Visitor Center has recently been built. The contemporary-looking Visitor Center is located on the edge of the cliffs, and for €3.80 per person offers a comprehensive exhibition on life in the Stone Age, as well as a guided tour of the remains of Céide Field. For such a setting and such a price, there’s no reason to hesitate!

So far stone-walled fields, houses and megalithic tombs – about half a million tonnes of stone – have been found, the legacy of a farming community nearly 6000 years old. The visitor centre , in a glass pyramid overlooking the site, gives a fascinating glimpse into these times. Be sure to take a guided tour of the site to fully appreciate the findings.

It was only during the 1930s that a local, Patrick Caulfield, was digging in the bog when he noticed a lot of piled-up stones buried beneath it. A full realisation of what lay under the sod didn't happen for another four decades, when his son Seamus began exploration of the area. Excavations are ongoing.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Moscow Metro

Introduction of moscow subway system (metro).

Richly Decorated Central Hall of Novokuznetskaya Station

Nowadays the Moscow Metro has 12 lines, light subway and monorail. All stations are unique and beautiful in their own way. Unfortunately, in order to visit them all, you need to spend many days. I invite guests to visit the ones that have the greatest cultural and historical interest from my point of view. Among them are the Revolution Square, Arbatskaya, Kievskaya (Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line № 3); Kievskaya, Belarusskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Komsomolskaya (the Ring line number 5). Let us dwell a bit on each.

Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line

Subway station "revolution square".

Sign “Ploshchad Revolyutsii” in Archway with Bronze Figures

Most recently - in the year 2008-2010 – the Eastern lobby was renovated. Because of the terrorist attacks in the Moscow subway that took place several hours before the planned opening of the East lobby after renovation, the solemn part of the event was canceled.

Subway station Arbatskaya

Subway Arbatskaya is located on the same subway line as the station "Revolution Square." It was founded in 1953. It received the name in honor of the Arbat Street. It has one ground lobby (Western). Initially, the lobby was in a separate building, but the new building of the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense started, the lobby appeared to be in its atrium. The old exits were bricked up; a new entrance was built into the building of General Staff of the street Vozdvizhenka. There is a huge frame with a missing portrait in the ground lobby - until mid-1950 there was a portrait of Stalin. According to some reports, it survived, but closed with plaster.

The lobby was restored and partially reconstructed in 2007-2008.

The depth of the station is 41 meters.

Pylons are finished with red marble at the bottom, decorated with bouquets of flowers made from ceramics. The floor is laid out with gray granite. The walls lined with glazed ceramic tiles, white top and black bottom. The station hall is illuminated by massive bronze chandeliers in the form of rings.

Subway station Kievskaya

There are several subway stations "Kievskaya" in Moscow, located on different branches. This name is quite popular. It comes from the capital of Ukraine - one of Russia's nearest neighbors - the city of Kiev. The name is fully consistent with the idea of the subway station. The interior the station devoted to Soviet Ukraine and the reunification of Ukraine and Russia. The station is decorated with a large number of paintings .Twenty four murals depicting workers of Soviet Ukraine are placed on the arch above the pylons. The wall from the side of platform also contains frescos, mainly with images of fantastic plants. Pylons are decorated with light marble and additionally decorated with colorful ceramic cornice. The butt of the station has a large mosaic, depicting festivities to celebrate the 300 anniversary of the reunification of Ukraine and Russia.

Opened in 1953, this subway station for a long time was the final (1953-2003).

The station has one lobby, combined with the station ring line and located in the building of the Kievskaya railway station. The diameter of the central hall station is 9.5 m, the diameter of side one is 8.5 m. The depth of the station is 38 meters.

= Ring Line Subway =

It opened in 1954. The station received its name after the Kiev station, and locked the Ring line. During the construction of the station many projects were proposed, but the victory in the competition won the Kiev architects who made the construction of the station. It is the only station of the Ring Line which is not located in the Central Administrative District of Moscow.

The station has a pylon structure. Eighteen pylons are decorated with mosaic panels of glazes, decorated on the theme of Ukrainian history and friendship between the Ukrainian and Russian peoples, which started in the mid-17 century.

On the front wall of the central hall of the station a large panel with molding in the form of flags and a mosaic portrait of Lenin in the center are located. There are lines of the Soviet national anthem around the portrait, and under the portrait - the words of Lenin. One of the ways out of the station was designed by French architects modeled on the Paris Subway in 2006.

At one of the mosaics – “The Struggle for Soviet power in Ukraine "- modern passengers observe a mobile phone and PDA in the hand of one of the guerrillas, and on his knees - a laptop. In fact, he uses a field telephone, which was really a heavy thing (guerrillas holds it in two hands), and thing that people see a laptop is the lid of a box with a telephone. However, these phones have begun to produce only in the second half of the 20-ies of XX century. We must assume that the mosaic depicts a foreign field telephone transmitter.

Subway station Belorusskaya

The founded of the station was in 1952. It received the name after the Belarusian railway station nearby. The station has two ground-based lobbies. The Western one goes to Tverskaya  Zastava. It is decorated with beautiful carvings. The Eastern one leads to Butyrskiy shaft and Forest Street. The Eastern lobby is known for its majolica panels.

The station Belorusskaya is located at a depth of 42.5 m below ground. The diameter of the central hall is 9.5 meters.

Pylons are faced with light marble. The walls lined with white ceramic tiles, the floor is covered with ceramic tiles, gray, white and red colors. Lamps placed on pylons, in the form of vases made of glass and marble. The theme of decoration is economy and culture of Belarus. Decorative pattern on the floor repeats the theme of traditional Belarusian embroidery. Decorations of the ceiling consist of stucco decorations and 12 mosaic panels depicting the life of the Belarusian people.

Subway station Novoslobodskaya

Built in 1952, Subway station Novoslobodskaya got its name from the eponymous street:  the station is located at the very beginning of it.

Novoslobodskaya is pylon station of deep foundation (its depth is 40 m) with three arches.

Exit to the street is through the ground lobby with column portico, located on Novoslobodskaya Street lined with gray marble. Pylons of the underground station are faced with marble from the Urals. Thirty two spectacularly illuminated stained-glasses, placed inside the pylon and bordered by steel and gilt brass are splendid decoration of the station. A remarkable mosaic "World Peace" is located at the end of the central hall. The picture depicts a happy mother with a baby in her arms; it was the face of Stalin at the picture: the child gave a hand to him. But in times of Khrushchev the face of the former leader of USSR was removed from the panel. The walls are lined with bright marble; floor is covered with white and black granite slabs, placed in a checkerboard pattern.

Subway station Komsomolskaya

The station was built in 1952 and named in honor of the Komsomolskaya Square, which is situated nearby.

This subway station is the station of the deep bedding. Its depth is 37 meters. The station has column and three- arched design. Cast iron decoration is used in the construction, monolithic slab used as a tray for a collapsible finishing. The length of the boarding hall is 190 meters; width of it is 10 meters. There are 68 octagonal columns at station.

The main theme of the interior of the station is the fighting of the Russian people for their independence. The ceiling is decorated with eight station mosaic mural made from glazes and precious stones. Six of them represent the Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky, Alexander Suvorov and Mikhail Kutuzov, the Soviet soldiers and officers at the walls of the Reichstag.

Two other panels, depicting Stalin ("Victory Parade" and "Presentation of the Guards Banner"), were replaced after the dethronement of Stalin's personality cult in 1963. New panels depict Lenin's speech in front of the Red Guards and the Motherland on the background of the Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower.

The yellow ceiling is decorated with mosaic and moldings. The hall is illuminated by massive chandeliers hanging between the panels; platforms are illuminated with smaller chandeliers. The columns are decorated with marble capitals and trimmed with light marble, as well as the wall station. The floor is laid with pink granite. There is a bust of Lenin at the end of the hall. At the opposite end of the escalator is a large Florentine mosaic of the Order of Victory with red banners on the background. The ground lobby of the station is decorated with bas-reliefs.

In conclusion...

Each of the stations of the Moscow subway is attractive and interesting in its own way. Each has its own long and fascinating history and is beautifully decorated. The Moscow subway is a whole world, which can be talking about for hours. I suggest you short - no more than one hour and a half - and a fascinating journey through the world of the Moscow subway. The pleasure is guaranteed!

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

The digitized future of tequila advertising has taken on many, many  forms over the past few months. If you’re one of the lucky few who forked over $3,500 for Apple’s latest VR  headset, you’ll soon be able to tour the agave fields of Jalisco from the comfort of your living room.

On Monday, Don Julio announced a suite of Apple Vision Pro immersions that’ll hit the app store in spring. The first of the bunch will allow users a behind-the-scenes look at the tequila-making process, highlighting the harvesting, baking, distillation and aging of Don Julio’s products.

The move comes months after Diageo — the British spirits giant behind Don Julio, Casamigos, Johnnie Walker and more — launched a Digital Concepts lab to explore activations in the metaverse.  At the time, the company indicated that VR, AR and AI-powered tools would soon be on the menu.

“Apple Vision Pro offers us a new opportunity to bring consumers closer to the vibrant world of modern Mexico and all that goes into making Tequila Don Julio an iconic brand,” said Sophie Kelly, Senior Vice President of Global Tequila and Mezcal Categories at DIAGEO.

“Spatial computing gives us a rich canvas to deliver the closest version of the physical world of Tequila Don Julio through digital content, while allowing users to stay wherever they are in the world. What was once limited to visitor centers, distillery tours and physical activations, we’re now able to inspire and educate seamlessly with behind-the-scenes access to our award-winning portfolio.”

Diageo has promised that guided tastings, mixology demonstrations and “experiences” will be added to the app in the months after launch.

Though Don Julio is one of the first distillers on Apple Vision Pro, it’s among many taking advantage of the vaguely defined tequila metaverse . Since 2022, Jose Cuervo and Patron have each launched digital activations complete with games, real-life rewards and branded NFTs. Tequila San Matias soon elevated the stakes by “buying” a digital plot of land in which users can cultivate and harvest their own agaves.

In time, drinks at your local dive bar may well be replaced by a stream of boozy pixels. We wait with bated breath.
