Rome to Berlin: Piazzas, Prague & the Past

Great diversity of countries and cities but WAY too fast paced. One night in Slovenia and Poland was ridiculous and with travel time some days we spent less than 15 hours in the city. The guide was a but inexperienced so we didn't have a good description of some of the cities. Great way to make friends and see cities! Would recommend going end of August or later as it was still very hot going through the cities!!

It was my very first Intrepid trip and I enjoyed every moment of it. It was more than I expected! I loved the chemistry of the group (I miss them dearly), the accommodation location as well as the included activities. Being in a small group also has a lot of advantages like getting to know each of them personally and build friendships even after the trip. I was just so glad I took the trip through Intrepid!

Very exiting trip, we visited many beautiful places. End of May / beginning of June is the perfect time, because it's not so hot and not so full yet. However, I found the group to big (42 people), we spent quite some time on administrative tasks like check-in and out, toilet breaks, etc.

European Delight Tour

European Delight

So honestly when we were assigned to this company through Tour Radar and looked at the reviews we were a little worried. I tried to hope for the best and assume that people who DO NOT have great experiences write more reviews. I was absolutely correct. We had AMAZING tour guides. Knowledgeable, kind, helpful. I think this company does an amazing job of moving people from one destination to another especially when it seems that itineraries overlap offering everyone the trip they desire. The hotels far outweighed our expectations. Of course there were small hiccups with time losses and changes in plans for the day but for the price and to get a brief view of Europe I would call it an outstanding tour.

Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

We had an excellent experience. Everything was well organized. The tour company was very receptive to any questions. The guide was very knowledgeable. A couple of the hotels were just OK, but in general, they were just up to our standards. I will say that having an electric car was somehow stressful as our guide could not always find a place to recharge the car at night. He had to go back several times and wait for hours. It made his days very long as it had already been our driver and our guide all day.

What people love about Europe Tours

Martina was an excellent tour guide and Florin was a great driver! I always knew what we were doing, time and place to meet. Felt safe in the bus, he was an excellent and safe driver! The tour was fun and we saw some beautiful and wonderful places. The only place I wasn't too fond of was the place in Germany we stayed at. Other than that all the accommodations ere great!
The trip start to finish, was amazing, our tour guide Gustavo was wonderful!
Very good tour , something’s we didn’t find out right until the moment. But, overall good tour.

30. The Bastei, Germany

The Bastei is one of Germany’s most unique landscapes. Giant pinnacles of sandstone rock tower over the Elbe River and the green countryside. Spanning these pinnacles is a stone bridge, dramatic in its appearance, as it connects these towers of rock and then seems to lead nowhere.

The term Bastei refers to the jagged groups of sandstone rocks located in Saxon Switzerland National Park. Hundreds of years ago, the Neurathen Castle stood on these rocks. Now, not much of that castle remains. It’s the bridge, Basteibrücke (Bastion Bridge), that is the main attraction here.

I’ve really been enjoying your website while planning an upcoming trip to Poland, but was disappointed to see the Faroe Islands recommended as a top 30 destination due to the controversy about their dolphin and whale hunting practices. I know your site is about travel rather than environmental, social and other issues, but I wish more people knew about these practices. Appreciate all the other info and recommendations though – your site is a great resource.

Great Selection of beautiful places to visit in Europe! All the Photos of the places are simply brilliant. They can incite anyone to plan for a trip.

I second all your thoughts. Recently I have been to Hallstatt. No doubt in its beauty. But I could not take the mad rush! Indeed, when a place is this beautiful, everyone wants to go. But what I found difficult was – The viewpoints were filled with camera tripods. Honestly, I had to manage to see the town between the legs of tripods. To top it, skirt-twirling pretty girls and jacket-wearing handsome guys took hours together, blocking almost every best viewpoint. Maybe I went at the wrong time!

That pretty much sums up our visit too. I think an overnight stay would make it a better experience, to stroll the streets in the morning and evening when they are less crowded. Cheers, Julie

Norway… I’d like to visit and see especially the fjords. And Portugal.. I’ve no idea about Algarve, but looks great.

16 Best Travel Websites and Tools for Europe 2024 (Planning and Booking)

travel website europe

There are a lot of fantastic travel websites for traveling to Europe. Besides our own little resource, we think you should know about the following websites we actually use ourselves.

This is a site you want to bookmark. Here are all the best sites for travel planning 2024.

These apps and tools will help you find tickets, transportation, rent a car, and all of that sort of nature. Basically, this here is your Swiss-knife of the best websites to travel to Europe.

Top Websites to travel to Europe in 2024

We organized this guide by topic, and the websites in no particular order. Every single one we mentioned is used by us too.

On the menu:

  • Get Your Guide
  • Discover Cars
  • Planning your route

Booking.com

  • Airbnb and better Alternatives

Hostelworld

Hostelz.com.

  • Google Flights
  • Airalo eSim Card

Under One Week in Europe , we share all the destinations we cover and more generic articles as well. We also included a full map with all European cities and countries we cover.

1. Sightseeing Tickets and Tours

There are three websites we highly recommend for getting your sightseeing tickets and tours.

Get Your Guide and Tiqets.com are ticket suppliers. Here you will find all your tickets for the Colosseum in Rome, Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Eiffel Tower in Paris and so on.

Compare both websites. Prices can differ, it depends on the sight really. Here is my review about Get Your Guide .

The Best Tours in Europe

Walks of Italy or Take Walks (it is the same company!) is a small walking tour company offering high-quality walking tours with exceptional guides.

I know, this sounds a bit over the top, maybe?! Yet it is true. We joined their tours in Florence, Venice, Rome, and Athens so far. All their groups are small and they even run some exclusive VIP tours. No kidding! You can enter the Sistine Chapel after hours or get some skip-the-line-tickets for special sights like the Colosseum in Rome.

We absolutely loved it every single time! Here is my review of Take Walks with more details.

2. Car Rental in Europe

Car Rental : Discover Cars

Planning to rent a car in Europe? There are so many options and websites out there. We always start our research at Discover Cars.

It compares all car rental companies and even offers car insurance. This saves you a lot of money as it is much cheaper with them. Read our complete guide and review on Discover Car Hire .

Planning your route : Viamichelin.com

The absolute best website to plan your route and the costs of that trip. It is a very easy website to use. Just add your origin and destination. Via Michelin runs a few routes and gives you the best options.

My favorite part is the calculation of costs, including gas and tolls. Especially in countries like France and Italy, the tolls can up a lot. In countries like Spain, it is often not necessary to take the toll-road, since there is a national street nearby.

Discover Car Rental in Europe

3. Travel Insurance

Do you need travel insurance? In case your own health insurance does not cover travel, we really recommend getting one. Please check if you already have your own insurance, though. No need to have 2-3-4 different ones.

Also, very important: make sure your travel insurance covers:

  • the countries you will be visiting
  • activities you plan to do
  • covers other basics you require

The two go-to websites we used both in the past:

Find here a complete review of Safetywing . It is also important to compare Safetywing to HeyMondo. Maybe some of them fits much better for your own needs.

Here is a detailed review of HeyMondo Travel Insurance .

4. Accommodation

  • Airbnb.com  and better Alternatives to Airbnb

These are my best websites for accommodation in Europe. As a very first step, we recommend checking our Europe itineraries.

We also share our best tips on where to stay in several, major European destinations. These guides are for instance:

  • Where to stay in Paris
  • Guide to where to stay in Florence
  • Places to stay in Vienna
  • best places to stay in Venice, Italy
  • where to stay in Edinburgh
  • Where to stay in Istanbul
  • Where to stay in Barcelona

Booking.com usually lists every single type of accommodation from the North to the South. Not sure how booking.com work? Read this review of Booking.com

Vrbo is another home-sharing and rental platform. It is a big competitor of Airbnb, yet not as known.

Here you can find our review of Vrbo .

The prices are competitive, and it has a stronger focus on more unique accommodation near beaches and such. For Europe, Vrbo is a good alternative. Sign up, it is free.

VRBO Reviews

Airbnb (yes, but…!)

On the other hand, Airbnb is obviously famous for its apartments. However, I urge you to check for apartments in Europe with a proper tourist license . There have been cases you people have thrown out of the apartment by police as the host had no actual tourism license.

Furthermore, in many touristic places, Airbnb is not very popular among locals. Personally, we stopped using Airbnb due to the abuse of local markets. It just does not sit right with us (anymore!)

Guide to Alternatives to Airbnb

We wrote up a big, detailed guide on Airbnb competitors and alternative websites you can use. There is many interesting websites you may have never heard of. The range goes from high-end luxury to free stays and camping.

Aside from the beach, you can also take a swim at H10 Marina's rooftop pool

For traveling on a smaller budget, I use Hostelworld .

Here you can find all the hostels in Europe. Some hostels are really low-quality, while others can be surprisingly cool. For backpackers and solo-travelers, Hostelworld is a cool app and website to use.

Last but not the least comes in Hostelz.com .

This website is actually a budget traveler’s best friend. It lists every single hostel in the world, and it compares its prices through Booking.com and Hostelworld.com

You can end up saving 25% less on your accommodation in Europe. Imagine that. Therefore, add Hostelz.com to your favorite travel sites. It is an easy money saver!

Grab a coffee or a snack at ClinkNoords Hotel's cafe

  • Flights Google

Finding flights can be a big task. When traveling in Europe, I always check these websites. I listed them above.

When taking a flight in Europe, make sure you check the luggage restrictions in size and weight. Especially low-budget airlines charge extra for oversized and overweight luggage.

Flights in Europe? Which websites are the best?

6. Public Transports (Trains and buses)

My best website for trains in Europe is Omio.com.

You can check train schedules and buses. It is sooooo so easy to use. Love it! The website is relatively new and so powerful. Also, you can buy your train and bus tickets with Omio.com directly as well.

Not a public transport, but a private bus company connecting cities in Europe is Flixbus . It is a great way to travel Europe cheap. Bear in mind, bus trips can be long. Personally, I prefer taking the train.

Read : Flixbus in a review —is it reliable?

7. Other: Visa and Internet

For Visa, we have one trusted source.

1. Sort out your Visa with iVisa.com

Before traveling to Europe, make sure you have the correct visa. Make sure you check the right country and if it is part of the Schengen Area. The UK, for instance, is not part of the Schengen area and requires a different visa than Spain.

We love to use iVisa.com for checking out our visa situation. Just add your citizenship and the country you want to visit. It will give you all options for the visa. It even tells you if you need a visa at all.

Important : Some countries require a valid proof of onward travel. You can use onward ticket as a service here. Check this review of Onward Tickets .

I am adding here a little widget. It is completely free to use. The visa itself usually costs anything from €15.

2. Internet in Europe: eSim Card with Airalo

Are you tired of dealing with the hassle of physical SIM cards while traveling? Imagine a seamless, borderless mobile experience, enabling you to explore Europe without limitations. That’s where Airalo’s revolutionary eSIM card comes into play! With Airalo, you can unlock a world of connectivity, convenience, and cost savings like never before.

Find here our discount code for Airalo .

What exactly is an eSIM card anyway?

Basically, instead of a physical Sim Card to put in your phone, it is a digital that you “ download ” or “ install “.

It’s an electronic SIM that eliminates the need for a physical SIM card. Instead, your smartphone connects directly to the cellular network using a small chip already embedded within it. This means no more fumbling with tiny pieces of plastic or worrying about misplacing your SIM card.

No worries, it is super easy to set up! Airalo has an app and it works just smoothly; no need to be a tech nerd.

  • Passengers in the United States traveling to any city in England and planning on renting a car should know that children must use a car seat until they are at least 12 years old. Parents can utilize the most appropriate type of child restraint based on the age and size of their child.
  • When travelers in the center of the United States want to travel to the popular city of Berlin, they most often will depart on international flights from Chicago O' Hare International Airport (ORD). From this airport, passengers can find one-stop flights to Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt (BER) aboard LOT Airlines, Icelandair, and Lufthansa.
  • When parents plan on taking their children to France and will be driving a rental car, it is important to know that children up to 15 months of age must travel in a rear-facing car seat, and then up to four years old must travel in a forward-facing car seat. After that, any child up to 12 years of age needs to travel in either a booster seat or on a booster cushion.
  • One of the most popular destinations in Europe for travelers from the United States is Madrid. When traveling from the large city of Boston and the Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), travelers can find nonstop flight options aboard Iberia, Finnair, and American Airlines to Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD).
  • Another destination that is quite popular for visitors traveling to Europe is Vienna. When flying from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL), passengers can find a number of one-stop flights aboard both United Airlines and Lufthansa that travel to Vienna International Airport (VIE).

Top 5 airlines flying to Europe

Carly the flight attendant was extremely helpful and very accommodating to passengers on the flight from what I noticed. Couldn't be more satisfied with the service and assistance from Delta's flight attendant, Thanks again Carly!!

I didn’t not like that I could not select my seat and ended up with the worse seat.

I didn’t like that I could not select my seat and was assigned a seat when I checked in at LAX

Delta did an awful job w logistics at DTW. Missed connection. We were there an hour early. SUCKED

Inflight entertainment stopped working as we taxi to runway and never worked again until landing and taxi to gate. Grrrr

Had to run to make it only to have the flight delayed to wait for all the late connectors Second drink service skipped up

Boarding was a sh!t show. JFK BOARDING was awful. The agent called three sections at a time Clogging the area then yelling at people to not block the walk way. How are you going to call delta one , premium select and comfort plus at once and the yell at highest paying passengers. Need to do a lot better and the flight attendants in the galley need to understand that their voices travel. They were talking about others and everyone in the cabin heard them

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

Please see my lengthy description on MSP to Atlanta survey. Tailbone is killing me from old hard seats. Seat would not recline and were not near exit row. Entertainment did not work properly and couldn’t use. No audio and touch screen failed. 3 plus hours of discomfort in narrower seats than previous flight not in comfort plus. Very dissatisfied and deserve comfort plus charges refunds, at the very least, for both my wife and I. The plane needs to be retired. Please feel free to contact me directly for further details.

MSP to Atlanta was much better than Atlanta to St. Kitts. Paid $180 each for myself and wife for Delta comfort from Atlanta to St. Kitts. Seats were more narrow and obviously old and worn out. Tailbone is killing me. Seat would not recline. Seats behind reclined and we were not an exit row or in front of an exit row. Entertainment did not work in that the movie jumped forward and back and there was no audio. The plug in the arm rest was loose. Flight attendant tried “resetting” the video for my seat but no good. She never checked back. Someone else near me had the same issue. Touch screen was unresponsive. No where near as comfortable as MSP to Atlanta flight. 3 plus hrs. flight time without the basic amenities and not even remotely close to comfortable but paid for Comfort plus. I will be very disappointed if I have the same on my return “Comfort Plus” flight St. Kitts to Atlanta. At the very least my wife and I should be refunded for round trip “Comfort Plus” charges. Please feel free to contact me directly for more details.

Plane didn’t even make it off the ground. We all had to get off and walk to a different terminal (lots of confusion) to get on a different plane. Landed fairly late, connections missed.

the head jack on my seat didn't work and the power outlet didn't work for my seat

All good except paid for wifi that did not work

Beverage and food services are excellent. We enjoy paying the extra for economy plus for the 3 inches more leg room to be exact.

Left 2 hours later for delayed I had to take care a kid with special need since people don’t want to move to accommodate the rest of the family. . It wasn’t bad but that made me upset that people can be that selfish.

The crew were really great, but the 4 hour delay in small chunks was the worst.

They did get us booked on a later flight, but it made us miss our connecting flight. So, we had to stay and another state overnight with no luggage or clothes. Because they kept our luggage at airport for next flight on the next day.

The leg space between me and the seat in front of me was excellent.

Flight was delayed by 3 hours. The pilot made up 1 hour during the flight, but that made the wait at the airport 5 hours once you factor getting there 2 hours early.

That flight was smooth, and staff we courteous. it was a full flight so very tight. The boarding through security was not properly controlled. it was rushed and the scanning process for our bags, etc. was pilling up at the other end with no time to empty our belonging my personal items almost toppled over on the floor if i hadn't caught it rapidly. Was it just that time, or always like this - cant say. other than that all else was fine.

Plane was good but was delayed. probably not AA fault but caused a 1 hour delay. Seating was cramped.

Flight was good and arrived a little early. Very good.

Gossipy flight attendants talked the whole flight about bar hopping and dating.

Turbulence was bad and flight attendants gossiped about going to the bar and dating. Could have better awareness.

When we exited the plane our wheelchair wasn’t there. The Pilot and co pilot were so nice and helped us locate it. Great service.

Didn't like the 6 hour delay as it caused me to miss all of my connections. Still, I did get home safely 14 hours late but exhausted.

New ridiculous policy by american destroyed my allegiance to american. As a million miler with american, I expected it would be easy to get on an earlier flight when I got to airport earlier than expected, and save a five hour layover. WRONG. The online app would not let me switch flights, So I called, and was promised a call back in 90 minutes. HAH! The customer service desk at DCA said “we no longer have access to changing a flight on our screens. If the app couldn’t do it, I should send a letter to American, but there’s nothing else possible!”

We were delayed bc ground crew gave the flight crew the wrong paperwork. We taxiied to the runway then back to the gate to get the correct paperwork that no one bothered reviewing the first time we pushed back. Boarding was rude and stressful like it always is. Gate agents and flight attendants are all over 55 years of age, embittered by years of underpayment From AA leading to their passive agressive bitchiness for no reason.

Same basket of unhealthy prepackaged snacks (junk food) which was depleted by the time it got to my row!!

Lots of weather delays that were poorly communicated and managed. I get there are weather delays but they didn’t make it clear what was happening or comfortable on the plane

This flight is always a cramped bus. The gate area was inadequate and announcements were hard to hear. The flight was delayed 45 minutes to an hour by a broken aircraft door, making our total delay from Vilnius 5 hours.

Great seats assigned and comfortable, movies are good, food is delicious, great experience. No delays and they prioritize boarding children with parents which is plus.

they canceled my flight and we’re absolutely atrocious and helping me rebook

My flight was canceled. New flight is 40 hours later and I still didn’t get the flight from Frankfurt to Zagreb.

Great service. The flight was in great condition and the staff was very cheerful.

Check in crew in Charlotte NC was superb. There were 6 of them plus what looked like a supervisor, helping to answer questions and keep things moving. Never saw so many check in crew. Then some of them showed up at the gate later for boarding. Great. The flight was mediocre. The seats were small with little leg room. The screens kept coming on when we were trying to sleep and wouldn’t shut off. I know we paid far less than first class but does that mean we should be shoved in there??

Boarding was horrible. We were packed into a bus with few seats and made to stand for 10 to 15 minutes, then driven for 5 minutes on wild curves. Complementary food and drink was a tiny chocolate and a bottle of water. Seating was cramped. Aircraft had no video.

didn’t even get to go one of my returning flights cancelled and I wasn’t even in their system, vacation ruined thanks for nothing

The process overall was pretty seamless, and the crew were very friendly (especially Michael). Considering we booked expecting Lufthansa and the flight was operated by United, it was still a very good service and journey overall. The in-flight entertainment was great, with lots of quality options. One slight negative was that I had selected a vegetarian meal prior to flying, but received a vegan one. I think there should be more dietary options as it meant I missed out on some food that I would have preferred (and it seemed like the standard meals and snacks had a vegetarian option anyway). There was also a group of people who were moving around a lot and being generally disruptive at the quietest part of the flight, when the lights were off and most people were sleeping. I would have appreciated staff stepping in to encourage them to be mindful of others). Towards the end of the flight (which was very early in the morning in both time zones), the lights suddenly came on and breakfast was served. In my opinion, this was too early, and everyone was rudely awoken from sleep. After breakfast was cleared away, the lights went off again for about 45 minutes, allowing people to sleep some more. Then the lights came on again for landing. It seems like if they had served breakfast later, the lights on-lights off-lights on shenanigans could have been avoided, and people could have slept longer (and staff could have rested longer too).

Crew was rowdy and loud just hanging out in the rear of the plane instead of assisting passengers during boarding. During the flight the crew mostly hung out in the rear of the plane being obnoxious to a point of disturbance.

The flight was delayed numerous times with inconsistent updates and very ambiguous information. When it was finally cancelled the logistics of handing out vouchers and rebooking was extremely chaotic. Meal vouchers were completely inadequate for the airport restaurants, and not even accepted at some. All-in-all, it was a very disappointing experience.

Terrible. The flight from Islamabad to London took 3 hours more then previously planned, I missed my connection to Chicago, and instead had to go New York, spend an extra day before arriving at my final destination. The return leg of the journey was similar. The connection time in Qatar was shrinked to less then an hour unannounced, I had to scramble to barely make it to my flight to Islamabad. Terrible experience, never using British airways again.

The crew on this flight were attentive, efficient and friendly. It really made for an enjoyable flight.

The crew on this flight were excellent. They were friendly and attentive. It really made the flight more enjoyable.

They canceled my flight , they put me on a different flight that was delayed and the connection was lost . They lost my luggage. And now I’m stuck with any of my belongings.

British Airways canceled our plane and gave us a new flight scheduled to leave in only three hours, so we had to drop everything and rush to the airport. The new itinerary only left us a one hour layover in Madrid, which was too short because the plane landed late and so we missed our connecting flight. We were then booked onto a flight scheduled to take off 8 hours later, and were not given any compensation or remedial measures.

Seat layout, flight/club attendant service, food variety and quality could have been better. Business class Standard is visibly low compared with 6 other airlines that we have traveled for the past two years.

Despite many attempts to work out a change, neither British Airways nor Kayak nor Chatdeal would allow us to cancel or change this flight so we lost all of the payments when we were not able to fly. Absolutely terrible customer service. We will never use either of the services again.

It said that there was wifi. During the flight there was no wifi and while waiting at the gate the phone services already got cut off so I wasn’t able to say I am taxiing from the gate to my husband. This left me with an uncomfortable feeling. So I was waiting on the WiFi connection during flight and that never happened.

Asked for a wheelchair multiple times. Got denied the wheelchair in London layover.

A European vacation is a trip many of us dream about. Art, history, culture, architecture, food — there’s something for everyone in Europe. As you can imagine, that all comes with a hefty price tag.

While a trip to Europe can be expensive, there are ways to save money . One of those ways is to purchase a vacation package. When you purchase a package consisting of flights and hotels (and even rail tickets, in the case of Europe) there’s a good chance you’ll save money. While it’s not a guarantee, we’ve found the prices of packages are usually less expensive than purchasing flights and hotels separately.

Since there are lots of places to purchase vacation packages, we wanted to narrow it down for you. These 9 websites all offer European vacation packages and will be a great starting point for planning your vacation.

Eurailing Packages is a little different than the rest of our featured websites because instead of a traditional hotel and airfare package, it offers packages that bundle accommodations and train tickets . This will be handy for vacation packages within Europe, but not necessarily for getting to Europe.

EURailing Packages website

Since train travel is very popular in Europe, we thought this was a great option to include in this list. You can choose from the site’s predesigned packages and current deals, or you can build your custom accommodation and rail package.

Something thing to keep in mind when using this website is that the price includes a hostel, not a hotel . You’ll have the option to pay extra for a hotel when you’re finalizing the details of your trip but you won’t know the specific hotel or room type until after your booking is complete.

EURailing Packages hotel or hostel

Hot Tip: Use points and miles to fly to Europe when your vacation package only includes accommodations and rail tickets.

Grand European Travel might be a good place to search for a European vacation package if you’d like the planning done for you. This website offers lots of predesigned trips but doesn’t have the option to make your own. For someone who doesn’t want to do the legwork of planning a trip, that could be a welcome benefit.

Grand European Travel

If you decide to book a vacation package through Grand European Travel, keep in mind that solo travelers will default to a shared room. If you’d rather have private accommodations, you can select that during the checkout process for an additional charge.

Another nice thing about booking through Grand European Tours is that in addition to only needing to pay a deposit to reserve your trip, you can get a full refund if you need to cancel within 30 days . You can also change your departure date or destination free of charge until 60 days before your trip.

Costco Travel is another great site that can help you find the perfect European vacation. You can choose a curated package or design your own.

Costco Travel European Vacation Packages

While you have to be a Costco member to purchase Costco Travel, you can search for a package without a membership. Often, packages purchased through Costco Travel will come with a Costco Shop Card or extra perks which can more than make up for the price of the membership. Plus, Executive members earn 2% back on purchases, including those from Costco Travel.

If you’re an Executive Member, be sure to keep an eye out for extra perks on your vacation package. These can often make up for the additional cost of an Executive Membership.

Take a look at some of the member benefits we found on a London and Paris vacation package:

  • $400 London tour credit
  • Daily breakfast
  • £35 food and beverage credit at the London hotel (Executive Members)
  • Fruit basket and chocolates at the Paris hotel (Executive Members)

Bottom Line: You have to be a Costco member to purchase a vacation package from Costco Travel, but you can check prices without being a member. Often, a package will come with perks or even a Costco Shop Card that can more than make up for the cost of a membership. For more information, check out our guide to using Costco Travel .

Booking a European trip through Delta Vacations can be a great way to earn lots of Delta SkyMiles .

You’ll also want to keep an eye out for deals that will award you extra bonus points. At the time of writing, you could get up to a $400 Delta gift card or up to 75,000 Delta SkyMiles for booking a flight and hotel package .

Delta Vacations European packages

You can earn an additional 2 to 3 SkyMiles per $1 spent when you use a Delta co-branded credit card , too.

If you’d rather use Delta SkyMiles to pay for your vacation package, you can do that, too. You can pay for all or part of your vacation with your miles at 1 cent each in value . That’s just about what we value Delta SkyMiles at, so this can represent a good use of miles.

Use Delta SkyMiles for a vacation package

Bottom Line: You can either earn or use SkyMiles for a vacation package purchased through Delta Vacations.

Expedia is a tried-and-true website for booking travel because it’s easy to use and often has great deals. Your European vacation package can be customized to include flights, a hotel, and even a rental car.

The map feature is a great tool for finding a hotel in the perfect location , and there are lots of filtering options that will help narrow your search results even more.

Expedia European vacation package search results

Expedia participates in the One Key rewards program  which allows you to earn and use points on eligible trips and access special member pricing . This is a good way to earn rewards when you don’t participate in a hotel chain’s loyalty program or are booking a hotel that doesn’t have its own loyalty program.

For more information including how to use the One Key program, check out our guide to using Expedia to find great deals on travel .

Hot Tip: If you choose a hotel that has its own loyalty program (Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, etc.) you won’t earn hotel points when you book through a third-party website, nor will your elite status be recognized. If hotel points and elite status are important to you, you may want to consider booking direct.

Kayak is a great tool for finding hotels, flights, and vacation packages. It’s a metasearch engine so the prices you’ll see will be from other websites most of the time (though you can occasionally book directly through Kayak). It’s a great way to compare prices from lots of other sites at the same time.

European Vacation packages on Kayak

You can use the handy map feature to search for hotels by location or use the filtering options to find a hotel that offers a perk that’s important to you like free breakfast or free parking. There are also options to choose any property type — from apartments to hostels to resorts and everything in between.

Hot Tip: For more information, check out our guide to booking travel with Kayak .

United Vacations is a great website to use to search for European vacation packages, especially if you like flying United or live near a United hub that will have lots of flight options.

United Vacations Europe packages

It can also be a great option for anyone who wants to earn more United MileagePlus miles — you’ll earn them on your vacation package if you provide your membership number at booking. Unfortunately, you can’t redeem United miles for your trip.

This site has many of the sorting and filtering options you’d find on other sites, and you can even add extras like trip insurance or airport transfers to your package.

Bottom Line: You’ll earn United MileagePlus miles when you book a package through United Vacations, but you can’t redeem miles for any part of your trip. Instead, check out these ideas when you’re ready to spend your miles.

CheapTickets is a popular online travel agency for hotels, flights, rental cars, and vacation packages. It’s owned by Expedia so it has the same functionality as that site, but it often has different pricing, so it’s worth checking them both out.

CheapTickets

During the booking process, you’ll be able to add extras like airport transportation, a rental car, activities, and trip insurance .

Hot Tip: Before you add trip protection from an online travel agency like CheapTickets, be sure to read up on the policy for your credit card with travel insurance so you don’t end up buying something you may already have. You might also want to price out a policy with a few travel insurance companies to compare plans and prices before you book your trip.

Booking a European vacation package through Priceline is a straightforward and easy process. You can search for any combination of flights, hotels, and cars under the Bundle + Save search tab on the home page. The search results will quickly give you hotel information including the price and how much you can expect to save on the package.

Priceline European vacation package search results

Priceline has its own loyalty program called Priceline VIP that offers discounts, a best rate guarantee, and Express Deal coupons. While these perks are available as soon as you join, the discounts get bigger and better as you reach new status tiers within the program.

Hotel savings start at 10% for all members and go up to 50% on over 45,000 hotels for top-tier VIP Platinum members . Additionally, those with VIP Member or VIP Blue status will get a 5% Express Deal coupon after every trip, VIP Gold members get an 8% Express Deal coupon after every trip, and VIP Platinum members get a 10% Express Deal coupon after every trip.

Hot Tip: Make sure you’re earning lots of points by using a credit card that’s great for purchasing vacation packages .

Now let’s get to the important part — price comparisons. Since it’s hard to compare prices head-to-head for custom packages and ones that include rail tickets, we’ll only be looking at the sites where you can design your own.

Package #1: 6 nights in Paris at Sofitel Arc de Triomphe plus round-trip airfare from Atlanta (ATL) for 2 adults.

Package #2: 6 nights in London at St. Ermin’s Hotel, Autograph Collection plus round-trip airfare from Dallas-Ft. Worth (DFW) for 2 adults.

*Includes daily continental breakfast, airport transfers, and a guaranteed room upgrade.

For the first example, Expedia has the lowest price by far and the package even includes breakfast! Costco Travel was the most expensive. In the second example, Kayak and Priceline were the lowest-priced options with United Vacations coming in as the most expensive.

As you can see, there’s not a single website that always has the best prices, so it’s always a good idea to price out your vacation package on a few different websites to see where you can get the best deal.

Booking a vacation package for your trip to Europe can be a great way to save some money on a hotel, flights, and even train tickets. Since no single website will always have the best prices, it’s a good idea to price out your trip in a few different places to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

The train can be the fastest, easiest, and cheapest way to travel around Europe—but booking can be confusing. Here are all the essential sites for booking train travel in Europe.

For Multi-Country Train Travel in Europe

Rail europe.

Rail Europe is one of the best starting points for planning a trip around Europe, whether it’s a multi-country itinerary or single country trip. The modern, easy-to-use website offers English and U.S. Dollar display options and lets you make reservations, compare rail passes, and buy tickets. Use the customizable map to easily build out your trip.

Remember EuroRail? It’s now called Eurail , and its site is a great resource for planning a trip across the continent. Site features include a fun tool to help you find the best rail pass for your trip, plus European train timetables, maps with travel times, and even travel inspiration if you’re still deciding where to go. Eurail also helps with ferry travel, so you can easily figure out how to combine a train and ferry to get to your next destination. Note that if you’re a European resident, you’ll need to use the InterRail site to buy your passes, as there are different options for residents and non-residents.

Thalys runs high-speed trains on routes around France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. Buy tickets directly on its site—you’ll find good special offers and a deals section. Note that this site is only available in French, but Google Translate works well enough that you shouldn’t have trouble using it if you don’t speak the language.

B-Europe partners with rail companies across Europe (like Eurostar, TGV, and Trenitalia) to offer discounted train tickets. Compare prices here before booking your tickets—you can find deals like a one-way ticket from Brussels to Paris on a high-speed train for $20 if you’re flexible.

Ever bought a flight that patches together an itinerary from multiple airlines for the cheapest fare? Raileasy is the same concept, but for trains. It allows you to save tons of money by booking one leg of your journey through one train company and the rest through another—an option that most train sites don’t give you.

Not sure if you want to take the train, bus, or a combination of both on your European trip? Trainline helps you compare and book train and bus tickets across the continent. This is one of the easiest ways to check prices and times for multiple companies (like Eurostar, SNCF, Trenitalia, Renfe, Flixbus, and more) in one place. Book here and you can even pay with PayPal and Apple Pay.

Transpennine Express

Transpennine Express runs train services across Great Britain. Check here for live train times, information on how to get compensation if your train is delayed, ticket offers, and to buy tickets. It’s worth noting that you can get a group discount through Transpennine if you’re traveling in a group of three or more people.

For Single-Country Train Travel in Europe

Deutsche bahn.

Deutsche Bahn is the site you need if you’re planning train travel across Germany. Check here for great ticket deals, to buy tickets, and check train times. If your trip includes travel to/from Germany and another European country, you can buy German Rail, Interrail, and Eurail Passes here (and the site has a comparison tool to help you decide which type you need).

Swiss Railways

Train travel in Switzerland can get expensive, but Swiss Railways has some decent deals on its website, including a Swiss Coupon Pass that gives you discounts on attractions. If you’re planning a longer trip, the Swiss Half Fare Card is a good investment, as it will save you 50 percent off of rail, bus, and boat tickets for one month. In addition to train tickets, you can also book excursions and packages here.

Italiarail offers both tickets and buy rail passes, and it’s also a good resource for general information on train travel in Italy. The maps on this site are incredibly detailed, and show which trains are high-speed and which are regional—you  can even see which services and amenities are offered at each station.

Belching Volcano and Flowing Lava Dent Tourism in Icelandic Region

In a country that relies heavily on visitors, hotels faced repeated evacuations, and one resort was temporarily shut.

Large orange clouds loom above figures viewing a spewing volcano.

By Emma Bubola

Reporting from London

The Blue Lagoon resort in the south of Iceland is a scenic network of steaming azure pools surrounded by dark rocks, where tourists dip in the geothermal water, have spa treatments and enjoy what the resort advertises as “a universe of radiant well-being.”

But last week, a stream of radiant lava burst from a crater a few miles from the resort, forcing it to evacuate hundreds of guests, in yet another eruption of a volcano system in the Reykjanes Peninsula that had been dormant for 800 years.

The outbursts began in 2021, and the eruptions and earthquakes in the peninsula have destroyed some houses and forced villagers from their homes. One construction worker went missing in the town of Grindavik after falling down a crack caused by an earthquake.

The effects of the volcanic eruptions have rippled out beyond the peninsula, disrupting the tourism operations of a country that relies heavily on visitors.

Arnar Már Ólafsson, director general of the Icelandic Tourist Board, said that when a looming volcanic eruption led to the evacuation of Grindavik in November, it resulted in global anxiety that brought a drop in tourists.

“A spouting volcano doesn’t sound very inviting,” he said.

Icelandair, the country’s national airline, said it also saw a “significant negative impact on bookings” in the last months of 2023. And the low-cost Icelandic airline Play said that news of the eruption “cooled demand for Iceland as a destination.”

The tourism board did not release an estimate for the financial losses, and the airlines, while saying they experienced significantly slowed sales, did not quantify them.

Airline officials and the tourism board director stated emphatically in interviews and in the national news media that the reaction was unwarranted because the eruptions did not represent a direct threat to visitors or flights. They accused the news media of “alarmism.”

“In the international press, it just looks as if Iceland is ruined,” Birgir Jónsson, then Play’s chief executive, said in an interview published in December by a financial magazine.

Tourists used to flock to the Reykjanes Peninsula to watch the northern lights or bathe in the waters of the Blue Lagoon resort. But since the November earthquakes, the Blue Lagoon has had to close for some days . It said in a statement on Wednesday that it had also shut down from March 16 until at least Thursday and would continue to follow the authorities’ safety guidelines.

The Northern Light Inn, a family-run hotel, has also had to evacuate its guests four times since January and close for weeks, said Fridrik Einarsson, the inn’s owner. Now, they are compensating for the drop in tourists by serving lunches to the construction workers building protection walls in the area.

“If this continues for a long period of time, it will eventually be very, very challenging for us ,” Mr. Einarsson said.

Mr. Ólafsson said that any threat to the Blue Lagoon geothermal resort undermined a key component of Iceland’s tourism sector.

“Without the Blue Lagoon, it would be a different destination,” he said, “like Egypt without the pyramids or Paris without the Eiffel Tower.”

The resort is particularly popular with visitors from the United States, and every year, hundreds of thousands of people visit the spa, according to the Blue Lagoon’s website. The spa is now protected by barriers.

The resort owes its existence to the geothermal energy generated by the volcanic system, which heats up its waters. But that same system is also now its main threat.

That paradox, many say, is at the heart of Iceland’s identity as an adventure travel destination where tourists seek out untamed nature in the form of waterfalls, glaciers and hot springs. And 130 volcanoes.

During the volcanic eruptions last year, as tourists flocked to sites where they could see the glowing river of lava, the government had to warn people to steer clear of the area since the situation could turn dangerous.

Now, Icelandic tourism operators say, the anxiety has eased somewhat, and tourism demand has gone up again since January. But for those remaining in the peninsula, there seems to be no immediate end in sight to the disruption of their businesses.

Last week, as Mr. Einarsson, the inn owner, evacuated his guests to another hotel because of the volcanic eruption, he said they could see lava from the parking lot.

“It’s quite a magnificent experience, to see a volcano,” he said.

Mr. Einarsson called his relationship to volcanoes a “tricky love and hate situation.”

On one hand, he said, “people are understandably concerned to stay in a hotel next to an eruption site.” On the other, he said, people come to Iceland for its nature, and the nature would not be the same without the country’s volcanoes.

“And I would not be in the business,” he said.

Elevating airport experiences: the boom of luxury travel retail.

Duty-free in Singapore's Changi airport, which was voted world's best airport in 2023 at the World ... [+] Airport Awards.

With the post-pandemic travel boom ongoing, travel retail is set to surpass $117 billion in global sales by 2030, growing at nearly +10% annually from 2022. To meet rising traffic and enhance traveler experiences, airports are investing in their infrastructure, opening up a realm of opportunities for brands to expand their travel retail footprint. Increasingly, international airports are welcoming luxury brands as a way to elevate the overall airport experience and boost their appeal, contributing to a shift towards a more premium travel retail offering.

European Airports Bet High On Luxury Brands

Schipol Airport in Amsterdam - the fourth largest airport in Europe - is upgrading its Lounge 2, designing a new layout and rethinking the traveler experience altogether. At the heart of this enhancement is the dedication to luxury travel retail and premium food providers in order to elevate drastically the airport journey. This marks a transformation that can be witnessed across a range of international airports, which are benefiting from increased funding to rethink the airport offering and cater to travelers wishing to benefit from a pleasant airport experience before their flight.

“The renovation of Lounge 2 is part of a larger plan to make Schiphol attractive to passengers again: tastier and more sustainable food and beverages, great shops with an appealing range and an environment that emphasises Schiphol's standing as a home base for world travellers,” shared Arthur Reijnhart, executive director of Schiphol Commercial in a press release . “We're also improving our range of offerings in the luxury segment, with the first big step being the arrival of top brands Louis Vuitton and BVLGARI in Lounge 2. We'll be creating space for this renewed range in phases, and the opening of BVLGARI is a significant milestone.”

Schipol Airport is not the first to lead this increased focused on luxury travel retail: both Rome and Paris airports are gearing up their luxury retail offering following the examples set by airports in Dubai and Asia mainly. Indeed, as Isabelle Fourmentin, CEO of JCDecaux Airport Paris (a joint-venture between advertising JCDecaux and Paris Aéroport) explained for Luxury-Insights.com , luxury brands are the perfect fit for enhanced infrastructure and premium airport experiences. “The trend started in the main Asian hubs such as Shanghai or Singapore, along with the mega-airport at Dubai. European airports have since followed suit, with the major revamp of the Paris airports since 2005. Thanks to a gradual renewal of the infrastructure there, luxury brands now have more spacious stores, often with a highly desirable ceiling height – giving them plenty of room for inspiration.”

This has led Rome airport’s retail strategy to focus on luxury offerings, not just to elevate the airport experience, but also to go after a lucrative segment of the market. Gianluca Littarru, Rome airport’s general manager, shared in an article for Kering: “we particularly need luxury retail, which is one of the key drivers of growth in the retail business – combining a brand narrative and experience with the significant price advantages of the Duty-Free area.” He also added that “the spend per passenger for flights to China is five times that of other long-haul destinations”, explaining why many airports develop these high-end duty-free stores for passengers flying outside Europe.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, digitalization and experiences are key to high-end travel retail.

Thanks to a continuous improvement in infrastructure, luxury brands will have more of a playing field to engage with their audience in airports, both thanks to digital outlets and interactive shopping experiences. Brand activations are being reimagined to target affluent travelers and reinforce brands’ luxury credentials with beautiful displays and bespoke customer service, even outside retail stores. LVMH-owned brand Bulgari’s Rome airport footprint is a good example of this. The brand unveiled a new fragrance counter at the end of 2023. “In Bulgari’s new corners, travelers can indulge in a first-hand fragrance journey. To enhance the shopping experience, Bulgari’s highly trained advisors offer specialized services like custom gift-wrapping—a personal touch of Roman allure. Additionally, pop-up events, such as fragrance-flacon engraving and complimentary fashion illustrations, enrich the transportive ambiance of the spaces,” said the brand in a statement .

In addition to these type of visual and engaging brand interactions, highly digitalized marketing activations are helping deliver a premium feel to airport experiences. Luxury brand are investing in delivering innovative and desirable content displayed on screens, a tool that airports leverage heavily given the certain visibility generated by limited space and certain passenger traffic. Large screens help elevate the passenger experience, but digital experiences are expected to go further to meet expectations of luxury shoppers even within airports.

Last year, Hong Kong airport launched its digital luxury platform, allowing travellers to access a concierge service and make pre-flight purchases. Orders placed can be delivered to the gate or at the customer’s home thanks to free local and global delivery, a service that demonstrates how airports have the potential to become shopping destinations just like standalone luxury boutiques.

As Asian airports lead in luxury and digital experiences, other global airports are expected to follow suit, further expanding their luxury retail footprint and transforming airports into premium shopping destinations, giving brands a serious retail channel to dive into.
