Hays school bus with 44 pre-K students, 11 adults rolls over in Bastrop County; two dead

At least two people, including a child, died Friday afternoon after a Hays school district bus with 44 pre-K students and 11 adults rolled over in western Bastrop County off Texas 21.

The Tom Green Elementary School students were returning from a field trip to a Bastrop County zoo, according to a statement from the Hays Consolidated Independent School District.

The crash occurred at 2751 W. Texas 21 near the intersection at Caldwell Road, EMS said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

The bus was headed west on Texas 21 when a concrete truck that was headed east veered into the lane and struck the bus around 2 p.m., said Sgt. Deon Cockrell of the Texas Department of Public Safety. Several children flew out of the bus, he said.

The bus had no seatbelts because it was a 2011 model, said Tim Savoy, a Hays school district spokesman. School buses made since 2017 do have seatbelts, he said.

Cockrell said it was unclear at this time what caused the driver of the truck to swerve into the opposite lane.

The child who died was a boy, said Kevin Parker, division chief of Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services. Officials did not give the boy's age.

Cockrell said a man in a Dodge Charger following the bus struck the bus and also was killed. It was not clear if that man was part of the group from the school.

Cockrell said the driver of the concrete truck was cooperating with authorities, noting that it's uncertain if the driver will be charged at this time pending the outcome of the DPS investigation.

EMS evaluated 53 people for injuries. Parker said four people were taken to a hospital via helicopter with critical injuries, although he did not state whether the injured were children or adults.

Another six people were taken to the hospital by ambulance with potentially serious injuries, Parker said. Others were treated at the scene or taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Parker did not say how many were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, but noted that an ambulance bus was used to take 10 people with minor injuries.

In a Friday night letter to Hays school district families, Superintendent Eric Wright thanked first responders at the scene and state leaders who offered support, as well as staff members of Bastrop ISD, "who have been both at the scene and in close contact with us since moments after the accident occurred."He also thanked the driver of the bus, whom he did not name.

"Though injured, she insisted that medical personnel tend to the children first," Wright wrote in the letter. "Additionally, the other adults on the bus also focused their attention on the children first, despite their own injuries.

"I wish I could end this correspondence by saying that everything will be alright. For most of us, it eventually will. But, there are grieving families tonight who will never know life again as it was before. Let us continue to focus on them in our hearts and in our prayers."

After the children had been evacuated from the bus, it leaned against a grassy slope on the north side of the road. All the windows on the right side of the bus were cracked and those near the front of the bus bore gaping holes.Plastic water bottles lay strewn near the bus’s back wheel.

Family members are reunited with kids

Family members of students on the bus were reunited with the children at Tom Green Elementary School. Reunification was completed by 6:45 p.m., Wright said in his letter to families.

Jonathan Rivera and his wife, Cynthia Rivera, walked out of Tom Green Elementary School shortly before 6 p.m. They said they had just found out their 5-year-old niece was OK.

“This was her first school field trip because she had just transferred from Austin, so this just sucks,“ Cynthia Rivera said.

Cynthia Yescas said her 4-year-old nephew was on the bus. She said he was OK, but she and another relative were going to take him to the hospital because he was still a little hurt.

“The kids are more scared than anything else,” she said.

Residents, driver describe aftermath of crash

Alejandro Anaya, who lives across from the site of the bus crash, was at home when he heard the crash happen. Texas 21 can be dangerous because people drive fast on the two-lane road, where the speed limit is 65 mph, he said.

He pointed to a tree in his front yard that was tilted from a previous crash.

“The speed this highway has, it’s not safe,” Anaya said.

When the crash happened, his family sprang into action to calm the frightened children. The family gave the students water and cool towels, he said.

Some children were afraid to get on the bus that arrived to take them to reunite with their parents, he said. They were afraid of another crash.

Across from Anaya’s house, the school bus in the crash lay tilted on an angle on the slanted, grassy shoulder.

“Some of (the students) were really, really badly injured, and some of them were OK; they just had minor scratches,” Anaya said.

It’s scary to think about crashes involving children, he said.

“It was bad, not something someone would want to see on a kid, especially with a family,” Anaya said, gesturing to his children playing with toy trucks in his yard.

When Tyler Meachum, who lives a few houses down from the crash site, tried to go home from work, officers told him the crash involved a school bus.

At first Meachum panicked, worried his own son, who goes to a Bastrop school, was involved, he said.

Meachum and his family have lived off State Highway 21 for two years, but their son will start driving this year and they plan to moved closer into town, he said.

“There’s a lot of people that need to be refreshed on their driving course,” Meachum said.

The Bastrop school district was rerouting buses because of the wreck, so he needed to go to another site to pick up his child, he said.

“I, unfortunately, have kind of been waiting for this to happen with a bus because there are so many wrecks on here,” Meachum said. “I just figured it was a matter of time.”

Carl Jaynes, who was driving an RV, said he had been sitting on the road behind the crash site in his vehicle for almost three hours.

He’d been on his way from San Antonio to his home in Arkansas when he got stuck in traffic caused by the crash. He couldn’t turn his long RV around on the two-lane highway, so he was waiting for the crash site to clear, he said.

Jaynes said he didn’t think he had seen a school bus crash as bad as this one.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott comments on crash

In a statement on X, Gov. Greg Abbott called for Texans to pray for the victims of the crash. He said he'd spoken with Wright, the Hays district superintendent, "and offered the state's full support as they help their community through this tragedy."

"I thank the first responders and law enforcement officers who were on the scene immediately and continue to help their fellow Texans who were injured," Abbott said in the statement.

BASTROP, Texas (AP) — A cement truck veered into a school bus carrying more than 40 pre-K students returning from a field trip to a Texas zoo Friday, killing a boy on the bus and a man in another vehicle, authorities said.

Officials said the bus rolled over on the highway in the rural outskirts of Austin, where a heavy presence of emergency vehicles shut down traffic for hours. The roof of the bus was crumpled, and much of another vehicle nearby was pulverized. Personal items were strewn across the road.

Four people in critical condition were airlifted from the crash site. Six others with potentially serious injuries were transported by ambulance, said Kevin Parker, division chief Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.

An ambulance bus transported about 10 other patients to a children’s hospital with minor injuries, Parker said. Passengers on the bus included 44 students and 11 adults, according to the Hays Consolidated Independent School District.

The child who died “was a precious young boy” who was a pre-K student at Tom Green Elementary School in Buda, according to Eric Wright, school district superintendent. The child’s name was not released.

Wright said in addition to the two people who died, 51 others were injured, including the bus driver.

“This is a horrible and tragic day for our school district,” Wright said.

The bus was struck at about 2 p.m. when the concrete truck, which was traveling in the opposite direction, veered into the bus’ lane, Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Deon Cockrell said. He added that authorities told him initial information indicated the truck hit the bus head-on, causing it to roll over.

The man who was killed was in a vehicle that either ran into the back of the bus or maybe part of the concrete truck, Cockrell said. There was one person in the truck and one man in the other vehicle. Cockrell didn’t know how fast the vehicles were going. He said the truck driver was cooperating with authorities.

Parents of the students on the bus were notified of the crash and all the children were reunited with their families by the evening, Wright said.

Cynthia Yescas said her 4-year-old nephew had been on the bus and that he was OK, but a little hurt, the Austin American-Statesman reported .

“The kids are more scared than anything else,” she said.

The bus didn’t have seatbelts because it was a 2011 model, Tim Savoy, a Hays school district spokesperson, told the newspaper. New buses have been fitted with belts since 2017, he said.

Gov. Greg Abbott said in a post on the social media platform X that he spoke with the district superintendent “and offered the state’s full support as they help their community through this tragedy.”

State Rep. Erin Zwiener, whose district includes Buda, said in a post on Facebook that her heart goes out to the families affected.

“In this terrible moment, our community must come together to support those who’ve lost loved ones and those who are recovering,” she wrote, also thanking first responders and school district employees who she said “saved lives today.”

Buda is about 16 miles (25 kilometers) southwest of Austin.

“Our initial reason for launching Newsday in Education was for it to be among our branding activations aimed at helping to change the perception of Newsday from a dated product brand to a highly relevant contemporary brand embedded in the culture of Long Island,” said Patrick Tornabene, Newsday’s chief consumer officer. “Not only it is highly successful at achieving that goal, but it’s also fulfilling a sense of our duty to educate students on journalism, and it’s heartwarming for staff across Newsday.”

The news has been part of the American classroom for generations , according to the Education Resources Information Center from the U.S. Department of Education.

Today, many communities still work with Newspapers in Education for resources and curriculum. But in Long Island, New York, the program at Newsday withered over time thanks to several factors, including shifting media habits and the economy. After 9/11, tours ended due to security concerns.

In 2021, publisher Debby Krenek decided to bring the kids back in some new ways with a program of Newsday’s very own.

“This is a big initiative for Newsday,” she said. “Educating our students is so important for Long Island’s future and Newsday is proud to be able to provide this program for our amazing schools and educators across Long Island.”

Via email, I spoke with the team at Newsday about what they built and how other newsrooms can do it. Our conversation has been edited for style and brevity.

Kristen Hare: How did this start?

Amanda Fiscina-Wells, editor/project manager: Newsday has a history of connecting with suburban Long Island students. During building tours decades ago at our former facility, students left with newspaper ink-stained hands from making newsprint hats and ringing ears from the loud printing presses, while stacks of newspapers were dropped off at Long Island’s 120-plus school districts daily.

While the Newsday building was closed during the pandemic, we began to build relationships with school districts by setting up complimentary access on school grounds and meeting with teachers/administrators to find out where journalism falls in the curriculum and field trip logistics. Once our building reopened, work started on creating the tour program based on this groundwork.

The program has two components: field trips to Newsday’s Long Island, New York, headquarters and complimentary digital access to all Long Island districts on school grounds.

The events team designed field trips for fifth graders to align with the introduction to journalism in their school curriculum. The program’s goal is to offer students a behind-the-scenes, first-hand look at how professional journalism is carried out through interactive experiences to keep the students engaged.

Melissa Carfero, head of events: We of course hoped the tours would be well received, but we never imagined the feedback and impact would be as positive as it has been. The best part of the tours is truly the students. They are all excited to be here and very engaged during the visit. It’s extremely rewarding to see the fruits of your labor have such a positive impact. We often receive feedback from the teachers and chaperones after their visits that the students are still talking about the field trip and many want to be reporters now.

Fiscina-Wells: Teachers on these tours today tell us they remember this from their childhoods and love seeing how we reimagined the experience for this era. It shows Newsday’s commitment to the region we cover and how Newsday has evolved into the multimedia organization it is today.

Hare: Tell us about the field trips. What do the kids do and see?

Carfero: As soon as students arrive, they’re handed a press pass and become a cub reporter for the day. They also receive a backpack with their very own reporter’s notebook and pen to cover a breaking news assignment created just for them. The cub reporters participate in a mock press conference and work alongside an experienced Newsday reporter to gather the most important information on their breaking news assignment — the Who, What, When, Where and Why.

They also collaborate with their classmates to anchor a Mad Libs news report for social media and enjoy taking photos at our green screen photo booth, complete with props and images related to the news story they cover. Students then tour the newsroom, where they meet Newsday editors and reporters and visit the NewsdayTV Studios broadcast control room for a behind-the-scenes look at how Newsday’s newscast is produced.

Back in the classroom, students receive unlimited access to Newsday.com and Newsday’s electronic edition and use what they learned during their trip to write articles on the news event they covered here.

Hare: What are you measuring that shows you this is successful

Positive NPS (Net Promoter Score): This is measured through a survey given to teachers and administrators following each tour. Our NPS score is currently 100, the highest possible.

Fully booked schedule: All available dates were booked immediately resulting in more than 1,700 students touring this school year. Next year we will move to a lottery system to accommodate all the interest.

Complimentary access configured for all Long Island school districts: 90% of all districts are set up, 112/125 school districts.

Hare: How could other newsrooms do this, regardless of resources?

Fiscina-Wells: From the start, our directive was always to create a dynamic program that highlighted Newsday’s journalism without interfering with that work. Most planning for this is at the front end, so once the program was developed, it became routine, and many were willing to support the program across departments. Our events team did an incredible job creating a unique, immersive experience for the students, and it has been great for morale seeing elementary students in the newsroom weekly.

Carfero: My advice for others looking to create tours is to first focus on building a rapport with as many districts in your market as possible. Our team opened this door by bringing journalists into the classrooms. The relationships we built with administrators and teachers across Long Island were instrumental in developing the programming for our field trips. Managing the visits is straightforward once they’re up and running. The challenge here was creating programming that aligned with the fifth grade curriculum and was inclusive of all learning levels, but also kept students engaged throughout their visit.

Hare: Can you share a playbook about how you put this together?

Fiscina-Wells: 

Compiled a database of all school districts on Long Island with contact information and went district by district to enable complimentary access through IP address whitelisting. (Our market has 120-plus individual districts but in other areas with county districts this would be simpler.)

Consulted with teachers and administrators to learn when journalism is introduced in curriculum and field trip logistics.

Met with newsroom editors, studio staff, facilities department, security and others to collaborate and develop plans.

Used the learnings to create tour programming, scripts, video elements and other assets aligned with our facility resources to ensure a turnkey project.

Identified one school district to pilot the program and followed up with educators and administrators after for feedback.

Sent newsletter out to districts opening tours for booking.
