Fantastic pub tour with our guide Jamie yesterday, despite the crazy London weather. Jamie was extremely knowledgeable, with great tidbits of information on both the history of beer and the culture of beer drinking in England. He had wonderful humor, was captivating with his stories, attentive to the questions posed by those on the tour, and simply provided a wonderful and unique experience. I cannot more highly recommend this tour for anyone traveling to London and looking for something unique and fun to do! Well done! My 21 year old son had a blast as well. Lori C. Tally Ho sprung from the ingenious mind of a chap named Jack, a visionary who decided that the ordinary is vastly overrated and the extraordinary should be as commonplace as tea in London. Like a fine brew, Tally Ho has fermented into the quintessential confluence of British charm and adventure.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system.

The Classic Gold Tour -  3.5 hours - 13.2 km

One of the most popular bicycle tours of central London, your journey will start in south Waterloo, Lambeth, where you'll be equipped with a bike and safety gear and introduced to your expert tour guide. These city navigators will guide you through the backstreets and cycle paths, also covering ground that’s inaccessible to pedestrians. The Love London Tour - 3.5 hours - 12.6 km

Explore the city’s most theatrical and artistic side on a Love London Tour. From Lambeth, you’ll head to Archbishop's Park; a secluded green area of tranquility and the home of the Archbishop of Canterbury since the 13th century. From one saddle to another, you’ll experience the Horse Guards Parade, a historic sporting ground where Henry VIII once hosted jousting tournaments.  The tour will then proceed to Carnaby Street and Soho: the stomping ground of British bands like The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. As the tour draws to a close, you’ll soak in the atmosphere of the cobbled streets of Covent Garden; London’s Theatreland, and a lively area known for its high-quality restaurants and lively street performers. With a few more stops in between, you’ll finally make your way to your final stop in Lambeth.

Following an intricate route along London's canopied, dignified streets, and through the city's many parks, this is a hugely rewarding family-friendly bike tour taking in Archbishop's Park, Lambeth Palace, Westminster Abbey School, Horse Guards Parade, Hyde Park, Mayfair, Carnaby Street, Soho, Covent Garden, Waterloo Bridge, the Banksy Tunnel, and Lower Marsh.

Beginning in Lambeth, your day tour pushes off towards the Archbishop's Park. Its namesake, the Archbishop of Canterbury, holds his seat in the spectacular 13th Century Lambeth Palace, guaranteed to dazzle the eyes as you pedal through the park. Across the river, you'll cycle through the courtyard of Westminster Abbey School where you'll be able to catch a peek into the private quarters of the abbey itself. Your bike tour continues in a historic vein as you approach the Horse Guards Parade, home to the King's guard, but once the scene for Henry VIII's dynamic jousting tournaments! In a very different saddle, you'll be able to enjoy a leisurely glide through world-famous Hyde Park.

Moving into Mayfair, discover a high-class neighborhood of pricy boutiques, galleries and gentlemen's clubs epitomizing luxurious London. The scene soon changes when you cycle into the playful vibrancy of Carnaby Street and Soho, alive with the legacy of sixties swing, hippie culture, and rock 'n' roll. This neighborhood was once the place to be for the likes of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles!

As your day tour nears its end, you'll cycle through Covent Garden's charming cobbled streets. This area is famed for its quality restaurants and eye-catching street performers who make their living by night in the area's many theaters. You'll bike on to Waterloo Bridge and pass through the Banksy Tunnel, a swirling street-art gallery of vibrant graffiti that's guaranteed to grab your attention. At the other end, you'll emerge into the 19th Century streets of Waterloo and Lower Marsh, where stunning architecture and its reputation for top-quality food have drawn in many an A-Lister.

Finally, your bike tour returns to Lambeth, where you can hop into a local pub or restaurant typical of London.

London's best landmarks

· love london bike tour.

I was only in London for a day but I felt like I got a really good impression of the city from taking this tour. It was an amazing way to explore a large city from ground level – we covered far more of the city than I could have walked in a day and took in a lot of London’s most famous landmarks.

We were given the option of a men’s or ladies’ bike and were guided by Birgit, who kept us all safe and together despite us being quite a large group. Birgit was incredibly knowledgeable with lots of facts and interesting history that brought the landmarks to life.

We covered a lot of ground and really got to know the areas we explored. We saw the icons of London, like Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and Lambeth Bridge, cycled through several parks including Hyde Park, and were given the chance on Carnaby Street to lock up our bikes and go for a 30 min solo walk or visit a café. My favorite part was the Banksy Tunnel – as we biked through we could watch graffiti artists designing on the walls, and the ceiling was amazing! Overall, this was a great way to see the main icons of London in just a few hours.

Top-rated guided bike tours of London

Hey there, and welcome to my Red Bike Tours.  Friendly, personal guided bike tours of London, which reveal a living, breathing city, not just the tourist highlights.

My name is Owain and all my tours are personally led by me. Whether you're visiting for the first time or a local keen to explore what's on your doorstep, you’ll get the insider track on all sorts of London life.  I mix quirky stories and surprising facts with useful local knowledge to create the kind of personal curated experience you won’t find anywhere else.

Choose me as your personal tour guide to London and I’ll do everything I can to ensure you have a great time.

Why a bike tour is the best way to discover London

There’s something about the freedom of being on a bike - the wind in your hair, diving off into tiny back streets and getting to experience the place like a true Londoner.   Faster than walking, a bike allows you a leisurely pace but you can still cover a lot of ground.

My British-made red bikes are comfortable and really easy to ride.  My tour follows safe routes through quiet back streets and parks, avoiding busy areas wherever possible.  So even if you haven't been on a bike in a while, you'll be fine.

Let me introduce London to you in a way which makes you feel like you are flying around the city, really taking in its energy and vibe.  I promise, you, you'll end up loving it as much as I do.

Cycling around London

Bike touring

Canals, reservoirs and 3,000 parks all make cycling in London an absolute joy. As the famous River Thames cuts through the centre, it’s easy to enjoy flat bike rides throughout the city. Gentle hills can also be found here though, offering rare chances for views across the capital.

It might be the most populated city in the country but you’ll find plenty of cycle routes throughout London and its leafy suburbs. From Richmond Park to Hampstead Heath, it’s easy to get out for a spin and find yourself in surprisingly wild nature.

If you’re based in London, you have innumerable opportunities to cycle out into the verdant surroundings. Epping Forest is a fantastic example, an extraordinary ancient woodland just a stone’s throw from the city. With green spaces wherever you look, cycling in London is fast becoming a way of life.

Top 10 cycling routes around London

Richmond park – richmond park loop from wimbledon chase, thames path loop via richmond park & kingston.

cycle tour of london

Let us show you the way with the komoot mobile app

View of london eye – the mall loop from london bridge, richmond park – richmond park loop from twickenham, epping forest loop from hackney wick, richmond park – richmond park loop from streatham, tour of south east london – cutty sark to the line public art exhibition, central london sightseeing – regent's park, st paul's & tower of london loop, putney to wimbledon gravel & box hill loop, north london lanes loop from east finchley, more information, london’s bike-friendly parks.

Cycling in London is an increasingly popular way for commuters to get around and with money being ploughed into cycle paths, it’s only getting better. The capital’s myriad parks provide wonderful green spaces for rides and you can easily rack up the hours and the miles.

Richmond Park and nearby Bushy Park are both excellent places to explore by bike. A National Nature Reserve, Richmond Park is home to a large population of deer and spans 2,500 acres (1,011 ha). Ride here and pedal through Kingston to explore Bushy Park too.

Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens are lovely spaces for a gentle ride in exquisite surroundings. They’re often busy with runners, pedestrians and other cyclists but if you’re carrying a picnic in your panniers, they’re great parks to stop off in.

Cycling a little further afield

It’s easy to enjoy rural cycle routes in London’s outskirts with the majestic Epping Forest just a 35-minute train journey from Liverpool Street Train Station or a 16 mile (25 km) bike ride. This former royal forest is home to 5,900 acres (2,400 ha) of ancient woodlands, open grasslands, lakes and other special habitats. Cycle trails abound in this magical place, making it simple to take wild bike rides within London’s limits. Is there anything more exquisite than pedaling under aging boughs of beech and oak trees with no noise but birdsong?

With Colne Valley Country Park to the west and the exquisite Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the south, cycle routes from London take you out into fantastic countryside surprisingly quickly.

What to watch out for while biking

With a population of nine million and its historic streets thronged with traffic, cycling on London’s roads requires having your wits about you. The city’s cycle paths are increasing though, including those which are traffic-free.

Not all of London’s parks, including its eight royal parks, permit cycling. Some allow riding on designated trails only so it’s wise to check which routes allow bikes. Cyclists riding on restricted paths through parks can be fined and plain-clothes policemen have been known to patrol.

Using a good, solid bike lock will keep your mind at rest if you’re leaving your bike alone in the city while you get a coffee and a snack. Put the lock through your frame, your front wheel and the post or bike rack.

Are you ready to enter a peaceful world of lush greens and serenity? Only a short distance away from the busy centre of London a different world is waiting for you. I will welcome you at my 100 year old house before I provide you with a bicycle and we will go for a relaxed ride along a historic river, crossing beautiful parks along the way, completely traffic free. Find out how London was formed of little villages growing together and how this rural charm can still be experienced today. I will show you why this river, where people have been living and working for centuries, is still one of London’s best kept secrets. We will cycle through one of South London’s most historical area, where once a church stood as big as Westminster Abbey and a King was crowned. We will see London’s only still functioning waterwheel set in a market next to the river and stop for drinks/food at a 300 year old pub at the ponds of a picturesque English village. I have designed this trip to be away from traffic so you can focus on the charming scenery of this fascinating part of London.

We will then follow the Thames through exiting urban developments blended in with beautiful buildings from past periods and romantic houseboats and enjoy great river views towards Albert Bridge and Chelsea. We will cycle through the expansive Battersea Park with its Peace Pagoda before turning back. The route is away from traffic and flat throughout.

6 brilliant bike rides from London

Plan one of these beautiful cycle rides from London, featuring well-ridden tracks, scenic river paths and a few nasty hill climbs

Got the urge to feel the crisp autumn breeze in your hair? Perhaps you’re desperate for a bit of fresh countryside after a long, hot summer in the city, or you’ve realised post-pandemic that you’d rather your workouts came with a side of outdoor adventure rather than the smell of other people’s sweat on gym studio mats? Whatever your reason for wanting to get out on your bike right now, you’ve come to the right place.

It's surprisingly easy to get out of the capital on two wheels, and find yourself in pretty forests or close to the coast . London is surrounded by rural areas – from the chalk cliffs of Sussex to the rolling hills of Buckinghamshire and the woodland of Essex to the coastline of Kent – and many of them make brilliant places for a bike ride. From waterside paths to cross-country treks, check out these brilliant bike rides from London and get peddling. Need to get your bike in gear before you set off? Visit one of the many bike shops still in London . And if you would rather keep your cycling adventures within Zones 1-6 then check out our round up of the best bike rides in London – there are loafs of good ones there. (And we have even rounded up a list of London cycling caffs to stop at if you get peckish on your travels.)

The best bike rides from London

The Wandle Trail

1.  The Wandle Trail

Total distance: 20km

Difficulty: Easy – a wide, sign-posted gravel path is good for cyclists of all abilities.

Popular with families in high-vis jackets and giddy couples on ‘activity’ dates, this easy-to-navigate route follows the River Wandle from Wandsworth down to Croydon. It’s a flat, meandering, pretty trail that takes in south-west London’s bounty of parks and green spaces. Pick up National Cycle Route 20 from Wandsworth Town Station and enjoy a mostly traffic-free ride with plenty of nature spots along the way – until you get to Croydon, that is.

Highlights: Hunting down the blue plaques and local history facts of the cute ‘Wandle Art Trail’.

The Olympic Park to Epping Forest

2.  The Olympic Park to Epping Forest

Total distance: 25km (via the Lee Valley towpath)

Difficulty: Medium – expect to get muddy, lost and whacked by a few low-lying branches.

Had enough of road cycling? Jump on the towpath heading north from Hackney Wick up the River Lea past canal locks, reservoirs and hippies in houseboats. Cross briefly onto the A110 and then plunge straight into London’s largest public open space, with more than 40 miles of surfaced and unsurfaced bridleways to get lost in the forest on. Bounding along leaf-covered cycle trails will seem a world away from London’s traffic build-ups – an increasingly more frequent site as lockdown starts to loosen.

Highlights: Hunting down Queen Elizabeth I’s fancy Hunting Lodge, built by her father, Henry VIII.

Regent’s Park to St Albans

3.  Regent’s Park to St Albans

Total distance: 38km (via Highgate)

Difficulty: Hard – there are some big kickers as you leave London, which means it’s not the easiest way to start a long-distance route.

The main route to St Albans goes up some steep climbs on the way out of north London – we’re looking at you, Highgate Hill. But once you’re gliding down into open countryside from Barnet, all that thigh-burn is totally worth it. The route then follows quiet country roads and posh sports cars until it joins up with a unique part of National Cycle Route 6: a disused railway track underneath a beautiful canopy of trees leads all the way up to St Albans cathedral.

Highlights: Zipping through a tree tunnel along an old railway track on the way into St Albans.

Westminster Bridge to Box Hill

4.  Westminster Bridge to Box Hill

Total distance: 42km (via Hampton Court Palace)

Difficulty: Hard – ‘Zig Zag Road’ was part of the 2012 Olympic road-cycling route. Just saying.

Venture out of London, past Hampton Court Palace and onwards into the greenery of Surrey. Head for the horizon and don’t be daunted. Box Hill’s ‘Zig Zag Road’ may have been likened to peddling up the Alps, but it’s actually incredibly doable. It climbs 120m, over a steady 1.6 miles, on smooth tarmac road with amazing views. The Olympians may have lapped it nine times, but who’s got time for that on a Sunday? Please note, the road will be closed if it becomes too busy to maintain those two-metre rules.

Highlights:  the views when you get there – you’ll have earned them.

Greenwich to Gravesend

5.  Greenwich to Gravesend

Total distance: 43km (via the Thames Path)

Difficulty: Medium – the majority of the route is along the Thames Path, but there’s road action too.

Although some of the more narrow parts of the Thames Path remain closed around Greenwich and the Cutty Sark, j oin National Cycle Route 1 a little further along and tick off some riverside landmarks along the way: the O2 and the Thames Barrier are en route. Abandoned industrial sites and a few active chemical treatment plants keep things interesting until Erith, where the route heads down the Darent Valley Path (via Dartford) all the way along to Gravesend. It’s not the prettiest of rides, but it’s usually quiet and the Thames’ urban landscape is weirdly peaceful.

Highlights: Spotting Antony Gormley’s ‘Quantum Cloud’ sculpture from the banks of the Thames.

Potters Bar and beyond

6.  Potters Bar and beyond

Total distance: 75km

Difficulty : Hard – getting to and from Potters Bar can be a hairy (and hilly) experience, but the Hertfordshire lanes are worth the effort.

We have a confession. Your starting point is Swain’s Lane (sorry, not sorry). But what better way to get the blood flowing than a short, sharp incline? Now you’ve warmed up nicely, it’s a case of following the High Road out of Highgate until you turn right towards Potters Bar in Chipping Barnet. From here, the quiet lanes of Hertfordshire are your oyster, and you can gulp in some fresh air as you spin your way through the idyllic dwellings of Newgate Street, Epping Green and Hoddesdon. Take a left on the latter’s high street and follow Lord Street all the way to the hub of Hertford. It’s at this point that you’d normally have two choices – call it a day and jump on the train or get some more miles in the legs. Now you can only do the latter: complete the loop to Potters Bar (keeping an eye out for the brilliantly named Cucumber Lane), and follow your nose back to the start.

Highlights : tackling some of the tougher climbs that the north of London has to offer.

♥Love London is a relaxed tour through the West End exploring some of the city’s most theatrical, artistic and culturally significant sights. On the way you'll pass along handsome tree-lined streets and through some of the city's most charming parks. Your journey starts from our cycle hire and tour centre in Lambeth, conveniently located a stone’s throw away from Lambeth North Underground station. and throws you straight into the heart and soul of London’s cultural and artistic scene. You’ll first head to Archbishop's Park, a secluded green area of tranquility that backs onto Lambeth Palace, the home of the Archbishop of Canterbury since the 13th century. Crossing the river, you’ll be transported back in time as you arrive at the courtyard of Westminster Abbey School, which offers a privileged view of Westminster Abbey and some of its hidden quarters. From there it’s a short ride to Horse Guards Parade, an historic sporting ground where Henry VIII once hosted jousting tournaments, followed by a pedal through Hyde Park - once the private hunting ground of Henry’ himself. Up next is Mayfair, an area associated with luxury shops, galleries and gentlemen’s clubs, and one of the most expensive and exclusive neighbourhoods in the entire city. Passing along Carnaby Street - still known today as the centre of 60s Swinging London - it’s then onto Soho, a favourite haunt of the mods and hippies of the same era, and the stomping ground of British bands like The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. As the tour draws to a close, you’ll head to soak in the atmosphere of the cobbled streets of Covent Garden; London’s Theatreland, and a lively area known for its high-quality restaurants and lively street performers.

Making your way through an intricate network of alleys and passageways, you’ll make your way south and cross Waterloo Bridge, marvelling at the incredible views it offers of London’s East and West.

Back on the southern side of the river, you’ll make your way through the streets and enter a hidden underground tunnel, (sometimes known as Banksy Tunnel) a unique and fascinating passage filled with ever-changing street art.

You’ll emerge from the tunnel back into the light of the quaint 1830s red-brick lined streets of Waterloo, where the hustle and bustle of Lower Marsh awaits you; a market street that’s a favourite of filmmakers and full of listed buildings, housing lunchtime cheap eats and hip cafés.

From here your guide will navigate you back to our location in Lambeth, where you can refuel and get ready for your next London adventure!

Please note the minimum age for open tours is 10 - if you are with children under the age of 10, please check out our private tours.
