Travel Tips

• Make sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled start time, this will ensure you have enough time to find your Colosseum Night Tour meeting point.
• While there are a few on-site toilets at the Colosseum, the waiting time can take a while. So be prepared!
• You won’t find any luggage facilities, restaurants or cafes on-site.
• All of the entrances to the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill have a mandatory security check. This check cannot be avoided and is necessary for the safety of all visitors.
• Only small bags are allowed inside the Colosseum. No luggage or bags with wheels are allowed.
• Do not bring weapons, aerosol sprays or glass containers.
• The people with reduced mobility can easily access the Colosseum as paths at all the available routes are marked. Some tours may not be wheelchair accessible, so be sure to check the tour details or opt for a private tour.
• It is highly recommended to get your tickets ahead of time online and because tours for the Colosseum at night sell out fast.
• The Colosseum tour prices vary and can cost anywhere from 30€ up to 100€, or more. The type of tour you choose will be reflected in the price and duration of the tour.

The Colosseum night ticket does not include entrance to the Roman Forum/Palatine Hill (these areas remain closed at night).

It is up to the Colosseum administration to determine what areas are accessible during the Colosseum night visit. It is not guaranteed that either the arena or the underground will be accessible to visitors at night.

Getting There

• Metro: The Colosseum metro stop is located on the B line of Rome’s metro. Check the map at your local station.
• Regional Train - Take the underground line B from the Termini Station and get off at the Colosseum stop.
• Bus - There are many public buses that stop in front of the Amphitheatre on your Colosseum tour: 75, 81, 85, 87, 117, 118.
• Car: There are paid parking spots available in the neighbourhoods surrounding the Colosseum.
• Tram: Tram #3 passes the Colosseum
• Bicycle: The Colosseum is accessible by bike, just make sure to lock your bike in an appropriate place. Bikes that are locked to the railings in archaeological areas could be taken by the police.

Note: The Imperial Forum Road is closed to car and bus traffic on Sundays, which means it’s the perfect time to go for rental bikes or take a nice walk along via Fori Imperiali towards the Colosseum. Some bus routes are deviated on Sundays, so be sure to allow extra time to arrive.

The Best Views of Ancient Rome

Piazza del Campidoglio

You'll stroll through the beautiful Piazza del Campidoglio—the first modern square in Rome that happened to be designed by Michelangelo. Yep, the same man who painted the Sistine Chapel and carved the magnificent David statue in Florence! In addition, you'll climb the massive staircase in front of the Palazzo Senatorio that was also created by the Renaissance master.

The Roman Forum

This amazing archaeological site was once the social and political heart of ancient Rome, where public gatherings took place, and the decisions that shaped the Roman Empire were made. While the site itself is closed in the evenings, your guide will lead you along the exterior for a great view if the sites inside, and you'll learn about the seismic events that once occurred here.

Trajan’s Market

As you get closer to the Colosseum itself, your guide will take you past more of Rome's ancient sites. Constructed sometime between 107-110 AD, and considered the oldest shopping mall in the world, Trajan’s Market epitomizes the sophistication of the Roman Empire. It stands as a multi-level structure at the north end of the Imperial Forum, which once housed around 150 Roman shops and offices.

Trajan’s Column

This 126-foot column tells the story of Emperor Trajan's victory over a barbarian army through 155 carefully-sculpted scenes. Like modern-day comic strips, battle depictions from the war between Rome and Dacia wrap around the triumphal column. After more than 1,900 years, the column is one of the most distinctive sculptures to survive the fall of Rome. Hear about how archaeologists have scrutinized the scenes to learn more about how the Roman army dressed and fought so many centuries ago.

Explore the Colosseum and Underground After Dark

You'll need to have your ID handy to enter the Colosseum Underground. Here a knowledgeable Colosseum guide will be assigned to you once you pass through security and arrive at the ticket office inside the Colosseum. But this is your chance to see the Colosseum like most tourists never will!

Arriving here in the cool of the night with your local guide and small group of no more than 24 people, you'll first enter the Colosseum Underground or the dungeons. Used for housing slaves and animals, the Colosseum Underground featured two levels, an elaborate networks of tunnels, and 60-80 elevators operated by up to 640 slaves. Explore this restricted, behind-the-scenes area with your local guide, and imagine the experiences that once unfolded down here.

The Arena Floor Experience

Finally, you'll walk next to the great Gate of Life, which was used by triumphant gladiators. This leads out onto the reconstructed Arena Floor where the savage games once took place. This entrance is different from the Gate of Death which earned its name because only the dead passed through that exit after losing their lives in battle. Standing on the Arena Floor under the glow of moonlight without the crowds is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

This is the first floor of the arena where you can appreciate a view of the arena glowing against the night sky. You'll stand right where emperors of Rome and the wealthy and noble classes would look down upon the bloody battles below.

You'll also have time to watch some of a short film that offers colorful historical details about the life of a Roman gladiator taken from the writings of ancient historians and the gladiators themselves. This night will be one to remember!

Informative but disorganised

Tour was interesting, however we were late starting and late to the Colosseum so the staff there were annoyed with our group and really rude to us.

What to bring?

Please make sure to bring your passport or government ID! We also recommend comfortable shoes for walking on uneven terrain. Bring sunscreen and a water bottle for hot summer months.

Is the Colosseum tour totally dark or will there be any lights where we walk?

For safety reasons, the Colosseum's lights will be on for the majority of your tour so you can see where you're walking. However, it's possible that the Colosseum will turn off the floodlights during a portion of your tour to show a video. Your guide will alert you before that happens as it is a part of the tour. Otherwise, you will still get to experience the ambiance of the Colosseum at dusk or dark, depending on the time of year.

How much walking does this tour involve?

You'll be walking throughout this 2-hour tour that visits archaeological sites only accessible on foot, and with somewhat uneven terrain. Remember to wear comfortable shoes. If you have concerns about your mobility, you might prefer to take a private Colosseum tour .

Is it always dark during the tour?

The sun sets at different times, but it can stay light until quite late in the summer. This means it might not be fully dark during your Colosseum night tour.

What happens if it rains?

We run our Colosseum tours rain or shine. If rainfall is extremely heavy, the Colosseum management sometimes closes the restricted areas for safety reasons. In this case, we will refund €18 back to each person.

Why can't I book a ticket for a child who is 6 years old or younger?

For safety reasons, children 6 and under are not allowed on night tours of the Colosseum.

Why do you need my full name and birthday?

The Colosseum management recently changed their rules, which means tickets will be reserved specifically for the actual ticket holder. We'll use your name and birthday to reserve a ticket just for you, so don't forget to bring your passport or ID to the Colosseum to confirm your ticket!

Can my tour be canceled or moved to a different day?

Yes. Colosseum Underground tours are exclusive and require additional effort, but we’re experts in this field and have a large staff dedicated to customer success. If we are unable to acquire tickets on your behalf, we will let you know at least 14 days before your tour date in which case we'll add you to a comparable tour or offer a full refund.

Does this tour include Roman Forum tickets?

It doesn't since the Roman Forum will be closed at this time of day (as will Trajan Market). However, you guide will walk you along these historic sites, so you'll still get a great view and lots of interesting stories about their history.

Will there be a guide with me the whole time?

Yes, this is a guided tour, but you will have two guides. The Colosseum management will assign one of their knowledgeable guides to these evening tours and escort you safely through the Underground.

Visit Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

Roman forum, palatine hill and colosseum tickets, entrance gates and tours.

The Roman Forum (Forum Romanum) and the Palatine Hill are located in the same archaeological area and count as one admission.

The Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill are adjacent to each other and you can walk freely between the two. Both the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill have separate entrances.

The entrance ticket also gives you entrance to the Colosseum next to both and is valid for two days covering all three attractions.

Roman Forum - what is it?

A walk around the Roman Forum is to glimpse into the founding of the ancient Roman Empire.

From what was marshland the Romans drained the area and turned it into a centre of political and social activity. The Forum was the marketplace of Rome, and later a gathering space for triumphal processions, criminal trials and gladiatorial matches.

The Roman Forum was home to some of the oldest and most important buildings in the ancient city – what you will see today is a mass of ruins, including shrines and temples, such as the House of the Vestal Virgins. The most ancient monuments at the Roman Forum are from the first kings of Rome, dating back to the sixth century BC.

The Forum was then abandoned some time in the Middle Ages, and over time, buried under layers of earth, Some temples were transformed into churches, allowing their preservation in the course of time.

During the Renaissance the area of the Forum Romanum was used as a marble and stone quarry. However, it was not until 1898 that excavations began to be carried out, revealing what we see today.

Roman forum - tickets, opening hours and time slots.

Time slot entries are now in place at the Colosseum/ Roman Forum. You are required to select your time slot in advance. You will receive a confirmation email upon booking and and on your voucher you can read how to reserve your time slot. Although you can do this at the Colosseum Ticket Office, it is sensible to do this online in advance because otherwise there is no way of securing your preferred date and time.

The standard admission ticket covers all three monuments, the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

You can gain Colosseum and Roman Forum entrance by:

Arriving first thing and queuing for a time slot later the same day or later that week (although still possible, this is risky because you are not guaranteed entry on the day you wish due to demand)

Note : Within the Colosseum, there are parts you can only visit as part of a “special access” guided tour (see section below) for which the standard ticket has no validity.

Visiting the Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill - entrances and recommended route

Main entrance

The main entrance gate for the Roman Forum is along the Via die Fori Imperiali between the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia, near the Piazza Venezia end. There is an exit gate from the Roman Forum close to the Colosseum. You cannot enter the Roman Forum at the gate nearest the Colosseum, this gate is just an exit.

The natural flow of a visit is to exit the Roman Forum at the Colosseum end of the site. You cannot enter or re-enter at this gate though. There are also exits at the Capitoline Hill end of the site, but again no entrance. The Palatine Hill towering above you is also linked both ways to the Roman Forum.

Where are the shortest queues?

The ticket kiosk at the Colosseum has by far the longest queues; we suggest you start and buy your ticket at the Palatine Hill entrance.

The ticket gate for the Palatine Hill often has no queues at all and is midway down the road Via di San Gregorio that runs from the Colosseum along the base of the Palatine Hill less than 5 minutes' walk from the Colosseum. Many of the hop-on hop-off sightseeing buses and tour buses board and drop between the Colosseum and the entrance to the Palatine Hill.

From the Palatine Hill entrance, walking uphill exploring the Palatine Hill is more gradual than from the Roman Forum and has more shade. After performing a circuit of the Palatine Hill you will get a great birds' eye view down onto the Roman Forum as you descend into it, getting a good initial orientation in the process.

The entrance of the Roman Forum is a long way from the Colosseum, but there is an exit only gate right next to the Colosseum.

Roman Forum - what to expect and facilities

The Roman Forum is a large area to cover with little shade, so do bring along plenty of fluids.

Another thing to bear in mind is that there are no food outlets at the Roman Forum. If you have, for example, spent the morning at the Colosseum and you go straight on to the Forum, be prepared to have a later lunch by the time you have walked round this ancient site.

Time needed to visit the Roman Forum

Most people allow a half day to visit the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill with the Colosseum. If you have a real interest in the subject matter you will need a day.

Your ticket allows you to see all three parts over two days (re-entry is not permitted) so you could take a more leisurely approach visiting the Colosseum on a separate day to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

Following the enormous success of the Colosseum by night tours we can now bring you the Forum by night - 'La Luna sul Foro Romano'. All tours are carried out by official staff.

The tours will see you exploring the via Sacra, the main thoroughfare of the Forum, framed by the heights of the Campidoglio and the Arch of Titus. You'll begin at the broken columns of the Basilica Emilia, passing on to the Curia, the seat of the Roman Senate. The Curia will be lit in it's entirety, allowing you to view the marble floors and what remains of the Byzantine art there.

Leaving the Curia it's on to the arch of Settimio Severo and another strectch of the via Sacra, ascending to the Arch of Titus. passing the temples of Antonino and Faustina as well as that to Romolo.

Finally it's the Temple 'di Venere e Roma' and one of the most impressive views of the Colosseum you're likely to ever see.

The Roman Forum is the heart of Ancient Rome and, nowadays, one of the most important archaeological sites in Rome and in the world.

The ancient Rome Forum sits inside what is now the modern city and it is nestled between the Colosseum on one side, the Campidoglio Hill on the other, and the Palatine Hill, where the Palaces of the Emperors lie.

It is one of the most beautiful places in Rome however, it is also a place that attracts less attention than the nearby Colosseum.

While the Colosseum is on the bucket list of pretty much any Rome visitor, it is not unusual to find people wondering if the Roman Forum is worth visiting at all and I think the question is worth a proper answer.

While I believe the Roman Forum is stunning and a must-see for everybody I also believe that it is important to go there being prepared to what the forum is, what it isn’t, what to expect and how to tackle it at best.

This is my guide to visiting the Roman Forum.

Good to know . As well as being born and raised in Rome, I am a classics graduate and my dissertation was on Ancient Rome. So you can say I am biased when it comes to the Forum: I do love it! For the longest time, the Forum didn’t have good explanation panels and my recommendation was to get a guide to make the most of your visit. While I believe a guide is still worth it, the free app ‘Parco Colosseo’ now exists and operated almost as an audio guide. A good, budget-friendly option to see the Roman Forum!

All you need to know to plan a visit to the Roman Forum

The Roman Forum is the area of Ancient Rome where public and religious life used to take place.

The Forum is now an archaeological site and, in a way, you can say that the Roman Forum is Ancient Rome.

Unlike the Colosseum or the Baths of Caracalla, that are two ancient stand-alone buildings, the Roman Forum is a large area where you literally walk along ancient Roman streets.

The area is large and mostly outdoors. Being prepared for the weather and for the uneven terrain is a must: I share all my tips on how to dress and what to bring to the Roman forum later in this guide.

The best things to see in the Roman Forum

The Roman Forum is a rather large area with plenty of things to see.

The Forum Proper is a flat area comprised between the Capitoline Hill and the Palatine Hill, the two most significant of the seven hills of Rome.

The Palatine Hill is immediately above the Forum and it is accessible though it. The Hill is where Romulus, Rome’s founder, set his hut and where the Emperors then built their palaces.

The best things to see in the Roman Forum are both on the Forum Proper and on the Palatine Hill. Let’s have a look at them.

Via Sacra is the Main Street crossing the Roman Forum.

Nowadays, you see is as connecting the Colosseum to the Capitoline Hill but it predates the Colosseum by many centuries.

The tradition reports that the Via Sacra was were Romulus won over Titus Tatius King of Sabina (VIII century BC) and while at the time the road was a little more than a muddy trail, this tells us some form of street here must have been in use from very early on.

The paving of the street as we see it now is made of slabs of basalt and seems to date from Augustan times (I century AD).

In historical times, the road was used for thriumphal procession after successful military campaigns.

The military parade would walk along this road with the prisoners and the flags of the enemy, bringing the victorious general in triumph all the way to the top of the Capitoline Hill, where the temple of Iuppiter Optimum Maximus (Jovis) used to be.

The Via Sacra is now one of the most scenic areas of the Roman Forum, especially close to the Colosseum, where tall columns are still standing, giving a sense of what this road must have looked like at its best.

The triumphal Arch of Titus

The first impressive monument you find on Via Sacra is the fantastic Arch of Titus.

The arch is one of the three triumphal arches in Rome and dates from the I century AD.

This is a celebratory monument build by order of Emperor Domitian, to honour his precedessot Titus.

As the inscription and carvings on the arch show, the arch commemorated Rome’s victory over Jerusalem and the taking to the temple, an event historians describe as happened in 70 AD.

The Temple of Antoninus and Faustina

One of the most beautiful and best preserved buildings in the Roman Forum is the Temple of Antonino and Faustina.

The Temple sits on the spot where the Via Sacra meets the Forum and it was built in 141AD for Emperor Antoninus Pius and his wife: Faustina.

Like many ancient religious buildings, the temple became a a church in the Middle Ages and acquired the name of San Lorenzo in Miranda: this fate changed its appearance but it also ensures its preservation and allows us to enjoy it today.

An inscription at the top of the temple says ‘Divo Antonino et Divae Faustinae Ex. S.C.’ which means that the Senate dedicates this temple to the Emperor and his wife.

The temple stands on a podium with a height of 5 meters and is accessible by a recent staircase. This is one of the tallest buildings in the Roman Forum and one of the most eye-catching.

The Temple of Divus Romulus

The so called Temple of Divus Romulus is a round structure opening onto Via Sacra, inside the Forum.

It is not sure what the use of the temple originally was but we know it was built by Emperor Maxentius at the beginning of the IV century and was later incorporated into the church of Saint Cosma and Damiano, built here in the VI century by order of Pope Felix IV.

This temple is stunning and holds unique worth seeing. Please note that this temple is only accessible with the ‘Full Experience’ ticket.

The Roman Forum Square

The main square of the Roman Forum is a large area at the center of the Forum where all the most important business transactions and public events in the city would take place.

The area was an open unbuilt area for a long time but acquired an increasing number of public buildings and monuments, the latest of which is the column of Phocas, one of the most significant columns in Rome , dedicated in 608AD to the Eastern Roman Emperor Phocas.

Along the short sides of the square, there stood the platforms from where the orators would speak, the Imperial Rostra, the Rostra Vandalica and the Rostra ad Divi Iuli, dedicated by Augustus to Julius Caesar.

On the northern side of the square used to lay the Basilica Emilia: this was a civic area that used to serve as bankers’ headquarters and seems to date to the I century BC, yet the restored and modified many times in subsequent centuries.

On the southern side of the Roman Forum square there used to be another basilica, the basilica Iulia. This basilica seems to have been used for political, judiciary and economic activities and it takes its name from the person who commissioned its built: Julius Caesar.

Fun fact : here is where you can see remains of tabulae lusoriae , the ancient Roman equivalent to our board games! This is one of the best things to show children if you are visiting the Roman Forum with kids.

The Curia was the ancient seat of the Roman Senate. It is a large brick building wanted by Julius Caesar and inaugurated by Augustus, modified by Diocletian and finally turned into a church in 630 AD, fate that allowed the preservation of its beautiful Byzantine Frescoes and its stunning bronze door.

The Arch of Septimius Severus

The Arch of Septimius Severus is a large triumphal arch dating to the III century AD.

It sits at the end of Via Sacra, just below the slopes of the Capitoline Hill and it made of travertine, brickwork and marble.

The arch has the impressive size of 25×11.20×11 mt.

An inscription tells us that the arch was built to honour the Emperor and his son for ‘restoring the State and extending the empire of the Roman people’ and it used to have a bronze sculpture on top that would overlook the Forum.

Fun fact: in the Middle Ages, the arch became a fortress tower! It was restored only in the 1980s.

The House of the Vestals

The house of the Vestals is one of the prettiest areas in the Roman Forum.

It is one of the most ancient buildings in the city and it is usually associate with King Numa Pompilius, who established the Vestal Virgins as an institution.

The house got destroyed during the large fire of 64AD but was then rebuilt so we see now a later version of it. Still well visible are the rooms, the stairs to the upper floors and the portico, one of the most beautiful spots I the whole of the Forum.

The Temple of Vesta

The Temple of vesta is on the Eastern side of the Roman Forum and it easy to recognize thanks to its distinctive round shape.

The temple used to be part of the same complex as the house of Vestals, nearby. The temple was badly damaged however, ancient coins tell us the shape it would have had and restoration work from the 1930s patched up some of the fragments found in the area.

The Regia is said to be the place where King Numa Pompilius used to reside. This is one of the oldest sites in the Forum, with remains archaeologists were able to date back to the Iron Age.

The ancient necropolis

Between the temple of Antoninus and Faustina and the Temple of Romulus, archaeological excavations in the early 20th century brought to life and ancient necropolis (cemetery).

These graves date from the Latin Age (X century BC) and therefore predate almost anything else in the Forum. These are an important find for historians and archaeologist as they shed a light on a much more ancient use of this area that our ancient Roman sources do not cover.

The Farnese Gardens

If, from the Forum, you look up towards the Palatine Hill, you will see a structure that is clearly not ancient but rather from Renaissance Times, the ‘Farnese Gardens’.

The Gardens were built in the early 1500s by Pope Paul III Farnese and quickly became among the most extraordinary gardens in the city for variety of plants and views.

The construction of the gardens took many years and their appearance changed in the XVII century, when two large aviaries where added, and then again up until the early 1930s.

The huts of Romulus

The huts of Romulus are in the area of the Palatine called the Germalus, on the hill’s southwestern corner.

This is a group of dwellings that that seems to have been inhabited since the IX century BC and one of them is usually referred to as the ‘House of Romulus’, a full replica of which can be seen in the Palatine Museum.

This is a fantastic place to get acquainted with the very early days of the city of Rome.

The Palace of Emperors

In terms of visual effect, the most impressive sight on the Palatine Hill is the Palace of Emperor.

The Domus was built at the end of the I century AD by Emperor Domitian and it is divided into three parts: the Domus Flavia, with the rooms for business and entertaining guests, the Domus Augustana, the actual house of the Emperors, and the Stadium or Hippodrome, the palace garden.

The Palace is stunning to see: if you have time, I highly recommend you go to the Circus Maximus after your visit. It is just below the Palace, outside the archaeological park, but it offers outstanding views of the palace for the outside, the perfect complement to the sight you get from the Palatine.

The Palatine Museum

The Palatine Museum stands at the top of the Palatine Hill and hosts a collection of artefacts that spans over fifteen centuries of history of Rome, from its foundation to the highest successes of the Roman Empire. A must-see for history lovers.

The Forum is now an open-air archaeological park and you can easily enjoy it even just as a place for a leisurely stroll.

If you go on a bright day, especially in the spring or the fall, the forum is simply breathtaking: you can easily walk to one side to the other in a matter of minutes and you can simply follow your curiosity picking and choosing the areas that attract you the most.

The most beautiful part of the Roman Forum is, for me, the walk up the Horti and the Palatine Hill. You will feel the steps in your legs but, once on top, you have the ruins of the palaces of emperors and views over Rome that are simply breathtaking!

The pine trees that are typical of the Rome landscape frame the Colosseum and the Forum below and give you a photo op like no other!

Is there a dress code for the Roman Forum?

There is no dress code for visiting the Roman Forum. Clothing rules such as no shorts or no strappy tops only apply to religious buildings and main basilicas such as St Peter but not to archaeological sites.

The only thing to keep in mind when visiting the Forum is practicality: good shoes are a must and weather appropriate clothing for the season of your visit will also be important.

How to visit the Roman forum: guided tour or self guided? 2021 Update

The Roman Forum is a place so full of history and thing to see it is best enjoyed with a guide.

The area has almost non existent info panels so without some form of guidance, you can enjoy its beauty but you won’t understand much.

The cheapest way to visit the Roman Forum is by getting standard tickets and downloading the Parco Colosseo app.

The app is free and has explanations in several languages about the main sights in the Roman Forum and on the Palatine Hill.

If you have a smart phone, this is an excellent option and it also has a recommended itinerary for kids and another one for the visually impaired.

If your budget allows, then I recommend you take one of the may Roman Forum tours available (see below)

How to get the best Roman forum tickets

You can buy tickets to the Roman Forum on the day or you can book them online here. If you do so, make sure you pick a solution that works for you: there are several combinations, offering access to different things.

The tickets include a visit to the Colosseum (all areas or just some parts depending on the ticket), the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill, with the exception of some ‘super sites’ that you may need to book separatly.

Best Roman forum tours

Tours of the Roman Forum are bundled up with a visit to the Colosseum.

The best we have tried are:

• Priority Entrance to Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill with guide
• Colosseum (includes underground tier) and Roman Forum guided tour
• Walking tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill (3 hours)
• Colosseum and Roman forum tour for kids (suitable for primary school kids too)

Need to know: the tours tend to give priority to a visit to the Colosseum, which usually takes up to 2/3 of the tour. If you are interested in a more specialized tour, then I recommend you get a private guide instead .

How long to visit the Roman Forum

It usually takes me between 2 and 3 hours to visit the Roman Forum and I would recommend to plan half a day if this is your first visit.

Technically, you can spend as little or as long as you wish here, however, I think within this time frame you can see some of the forum most impressive area, such as the temple of Antonino and Faustina, the House of the Vestals and the Horti and also the Palatine Hill.

What is the best time of day to visit the Roman Forum?

The best time of day to visit the Roman Forum depends on the season.

In spring and autumn, the best seasons to visit Rome, you can go pretty much any time of the day, with only one caveat: the late morning and lunch hours can get busy!

Aside from that, you don’t have particular constraints when it comes to weather and time of visit, in mid season. The situation changes if you are visiting in winter or summer.

In winter, the best time of the day to visit the Forum and the Palatine hill is the late morning / lunchtime.

The Forum and even more the Palatine can get really cold in winter and being there in the warmest hours of the day will go a long way to make you enjoy your visit.

Also, consider that in winter the Forum closes pretty early (about 4 pm) and darkness comes early too, so an earlier start is recommended.

In summer, it is the opposite!

The Roman Forum in summer gets scorching hot and must be avoided at lunchtime and in the hottest hours of the day at all costs.

The best time of day to visit the Roman Forum in summer is the early morning or the late afternoon (check the time of the last admission though, you want to make sure you have enough time).

What to wear to visit the Roman Forum

You do not need particular equipment to visit the Roman Forum, but it is worth knowing a couple of things:

The terrain in the Forum is uneven, so you are recommended to wear good walking shoes or sneakers: no heels. Find my recommended shoes for Rome sightseeing here.

There is very little shade in the forum so especially in the warmer season, it is important to wear a hat.

In winter, the Forum can get surprisingly cold and the Palatine Hill gets even colder: wrap up well and do go during the warmest hours of the day for the best experience or humidity may get to you and make your visit seriously unpleasant.

Is there food and facilities inside the Roman Forum?

The Roman Forum has some restrooms and drinking fountains but it is overall hardly equipped with food.

I highly recommend you take care of breakfast and lunch before you come: picnics are now allowed.

Is the Roman Forum accessible?

The Roman Forum is not entirely accessible but does have some defined paths for wheelchair users. You can find all the pupated information on the paths and lifts here

Visiting the Roman Forum with kids

We have brought the kids to the Roman Forum several times and it is always a good day out.

It is, however, a day that can pose some challenges, so it is good to be prepared.

These are the important things to know before visiting the Roman Forum with kids:

You can enter the Roman Forum with a stroller however, only part of the Forum is paved. If you can, I highly recommend you leave the stroller at home, especially if also visiting the Colosseum (find my tips for visiting the Colosseum with kids here).

Kids will be tempted to climb on top of the ruins but this is not allowed. There is however a good playground close to the Colosseum , which you can easily reach after your visit and works well as a bribe!

There is no food inside the Forum and picnics are not allowed. However, it is ok to hand out a snack to a child so if you have small food for them, that’s ok.

Should you visit the Roman Forum and the Colosseum on the same day?

The Roman Forum and Palatine hill are just beside the Colosseum and you can visit both in the same day.

A short visit to the Colosseum can take as little as 45 minutes and the Forum is only a minute across the road. Here, you can spend an hour, four or even a day.

I recommend you schedule at least three hours for a quick Forum visit, a full afternoon for a proper one.

How to get to the Roman Forum

You can get to the Roman Forum by metro, bus, tram or one foot.

• The closest metro station is ‘Colosseo’
• All buses serving the Colosseum serve the forum too, as well as those serving Piazza Venezia.
• Tram number 3 stops nearby
• The Roman Forum is walking distance from Piazza Venezia, Colosseum and the Pantheon

Where to get the best Roman Forum views?

The Roman Forum is a powerful site and there are some amazing photo locations to capture its might, some inside the Forum itself, and some outside!

One of the best views is from the Horti, inside the Forum, on the way up to the Palatine Hill. From here, you see the Forum and also the Colosseum.

Another stunning view over the Roman Forum is from the back of the Campidoglio Hill. This view is free and easily accessible walking up the Campidoglio and going to the back of the main budding. The Roman Forum will be at your feet!

So, is a visit to the Forum worth it?

Yes, I believe a visit to the Roman Forum is worth it and not just for history lovers. The beauty of the place itself a reason for visiting, especially in spring and autumn.

Which ticket offices are for the whole Colosseum area?

There are three ticket offices: one for the Colosseum, one for the Roman Forum, and one for the Arch of Titus. All entry instructions are printed on the voucher.

How long does it take to visit the Colosseum?

One hour is enough to visit the Colosseum area. If you also want to visit the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill (access to these two sites is included in the Colosseum ticket), consider taking a half day. If you prefer, you can visit these two sites the following day as well. Once inside the Colosseum, you can stay inside until it closes.

How long is the line for visitors without reservations for the Colosseum?

It can depend on the day and the season, but the line for people without reservation is usually hours long.

Can photos or videos be taken inside the Colosseum?

Can we eat inside the Colosseum?

No, you cannot eat inside the Colosseum and there is no café or bar inside.

What can I see with ordinary Colosseum ticket?

With an ordinary, skip-the-line Colosseum ticket, you may visit the first and second tier and the internal corridors. You may not access the underground area, the upper tiers, from the third to the fifth tiers, or the Arena. The Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill may be visited with the same ticket.

Does the Colosseum entrance ticket also give access to other areas?

Yes, it also gives access to the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill.

Can I visit the Roman Forum first and then the Colosseum?

If you have a reserved ticket, you must enter the Colosseum, checking in at least 15 minutes before your reserved time. After visiting the Colosseum, you may also visit the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill with the same ticket within the following 48 hours from your entrance to the Colosseum. The other two sites are generally less crowded.

Does the entrance ticket to the Colosseum include temporary exhibitions?

If there are temporary exhibitions inside the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, the ticket you reserved is valid to visit them as well.

Do I need to print the Colosseum voucher?

Reservations with only full adults tickets can be shown on your cell phone without printing it out. For bookings that include reduced or free tickets, the electronic voucher cannot be used. You must print a hard copy of the voucher sent to you by email and show the print-out at the ticket office where documents will be checked for visitors who have reduced or free tickets.

From which entrance should I enter?

You may enter into the monument through the main entrance of the Colosseum through the gate reserved to individual visitors with skip-the-line, reserved tickets. All instructions you need are fully detailed on the voucher/ticket you receive by email. Please read instructions attentively.

Are there discounts for families at the Colosseum?

No, there are not.

Do I pre-pay the Colosseum, skip-the-line tickets?

Yes, the tickets are paid in advance.

Is there a separate entrance for people with reservations at the Colosseum?

Yes, there is an entrance only for visitors with reservation.

What is the Colosseum Open Ticket?

The Colosseum Open Ticket is a solution that allows the visitor to arrive at the Colosseum without a precise scheduled entrance time. This entrance is allowed only in the afternoon, at any time after 2:00 pm. If the Colosseum is completely full at that time, (more than 3,000 visitors inside, which is the Colosseum’s maximum capacity), you will need to wait for some visitors to leave the monument.

Can I access the Underground Area of the Colosseum with the ordinary entrance ticket?

No, you may not. The Underground Area can only be accessed by booking a special guided tour.

Do people over 65 years old have any reduced prices to the Colosseum?

No, they must reserve the full price ticket.

Do teachers have reduced prices to the Colosseum?

European Union State teachers can reserve the reduced price tickets. EU University Teachers of Architecture, Conservation of Cultural Heritage, Archaeology or Art History can enter reserving a free ticket, the same ticket for those under 18 years old.

Do journalists have free entrance to the Colosseum?

Journalists in the Italian National Register or any other journalist from a foreign country, exclusively for work purposes and showing a valid document proving their professional qualifications, have free entrance if they go directly at the entrance and stand in line. If they wish to avoid the line, they can select the under -8 price ticket on our site.

Once the voucher has been issued, can I change the date and/or time of my visit to the Colosseum?

No. Once the voucher has been issued, it may no longer be modified. This is a museum rule. For this reason, we suggest you pay attention during the reservation procedure and make sure you have chosen the correct date and entrance time. The Open ticket is the only reservation that can be modified up to 24 hours before the date of the visit with no penalty.

May the reservation to the Colosseum be canceled?

The reservation to the Colosseum cannot be canceled. If the ticket is not used, no refund will be given, even if medical certificates are presented.

Is there luggage storage at the Colosseum?

No, there isn’t.

Can I enter the Colosseum with a stroller?

No, you may not.

Can I enter the Colosseum with my dog?

No, you may not. Only service dogs are allowed. In these cases, we ask you to send an e-mail before you submit an on-line reservation as specific authorization must be asked in advance.

Can I bring liquids inside the Colosseum?

No. For security reasons, you may not enter the Colosseum with plastic or glass bottles, alcoholic beverages, or spray cans.

Is there an elevator at the Colosseum?

The ground floor of the Colosseum is accessible to disabled visitors and the first floor is accessible by elevators.

Is the Colosseum accessible for visitors in wheelchairs?

Yes. There are special entrances but the entire monument is not accessible. The Roman Forum is partly accessible.

Are there wheelchairs available at the Colosseum?

Two wheelchairs are available at the Colosseum, one for the ground floor and one for the first floor. Their availability cannot be guaranteed, and they cannot be reserved in advance.

Does the person accompanying the disabled person have to pay? Does s/he have to reserve?

Both the disabled person and their accompanying person can go directly to the ticket office with the disability certification and do not need to reserve a skip-the-line ticket.

Can I pay for the tickets I buy online by bank transfer?

Yes, making sure that the date of the visit is not too close, as the bank transfer may take 2/3 days to arrive. Please consider that during high season, Colosseum availability may change frequently and can be sold out in a short time. Your reservation is only processed when the bank transfer has arrived in the agency’s bank account.

If I cannot print the Colosseum voucher, can I get it at my hotel?

Sure. In order to do so, you can write the name of your hotel in Rome in the ‘Note’ field of your on-line reservation form and specify you want to receive a copy of the voucher there. This lets us contact you there for urgent communication or to fax your voucher.

Do I need to make a reservation for a school trip to the Colosseum?

Yes, in this case, you should send an e-mail with all details and requests to our reservation office. The e-mail address is: [email protected].

It's an exclusive visit and brings the structure's history to life like no other visit can.

If you want to visit the Colosseum at night, you need to know:

• What will you see?
• Is the night entry to the Colosseum included in the Roma Pass ?
• How much does it cost ? Are there any reductions?
• Is it the same as the day ticket, including the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill ? 
• Is it better to see the Colosseum at night or during the day ?

Visiting the Colosseum at night is really special, not only because of how beautiful it is from the outside (which you can of course see regardless.)

When you first go in, you will see and really appreciate the architecture of the corridors , because they are totally empty!

Then, as you go around on the main level of the Colosseum, your first impression will be of the silence.

It's dark all around you and hardly anyone else is there, so you get to appreciate what you are looking at even more, because there is no sound, other than the guide, to distract you.

On a night visit to the Colosseum, you will visit the main and second levels of the Colosseum, which you can do also during the day.

But you will also get to go out onto the Colosseum arena floor . . .

 . . . and, you will visit the Hypogeum below . Unfortunately, at the time of this update the Attic levels are not included in this visit.

This is another thing that makes this visit so special, as these areas are not accessible with a regular daytime entry ticket, and booking a visit of them, can be hard to come by as there is limited number of tickets to those areas.

A few things to note with this new system:

1.  It only applies for tickets from May 1 2024 onwards . If you want to purchase tickets for April 2024, you will need to use the old CoopCulture website.

2.  Tickets are currently being released a month out, day by day . On April 8 tickets for May 8 became available, on April 9 tickets for May 9 get released and so on.

3. The new website has a system which  puts visitors in a digital queue  before letting them on to the site itself, to stop the site crashing due to demand, so don't worry if you don't get onto the site immediately.

4.  Not all ticket/tour options are available to purchase yet  so keep checking back if what you want isn't available.

Is the Colosseum night tour included in the Roma Pass?

The Roma Pass allows you free (or discounted) entry to the Colosseum / Roman Forum / Palatine Hill , but only during regular daytime hours .

The Colosseum night tour is considered a special event, and is not offered at any discount or with the Roma Pass or any other Combo pass .

How much does it cost to visit the Colosseum by night? Any reductions?

The full-fare ticket to visit the Colosseum by night, which includes a tour in English (or Spanish or Italian), is 25€.

There is no additional booking fee so that is the final price per person.

For anyone under 25, the reduced fee is 20€.

For ages 3-6, it's free, but you still need a ticket (it's a free ticket but you have to reserve as it's consider a "spot" on the tour.)

Reminder: All Colosseum tickets will be nominative. This means that your ticket will have your name on it, and you’ll have to show ID to prove you are the person whose name is on the ticket.

Is it the same as the day ticket, including the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill? 

No, it's not the same.

A normal day-time visit to the Colosseum costs 16€ if purchased on site, or a bit more if you pre-purchase .

And it includes a visit to the Roman Forum / Palatine Hill area over a 24-hour period.

Any other kind of visit to the Colosseum, such as underground , to upper tiers, and, the subject of this page, visiting the Colosseum by night, is considered a special event .

(It's also why they are not always available.)

Colosseum night tickets must be purchased in advance , and always include a tour with someone from the staff of Parco Colosseo.

You cannot wander in on your own, and you cannot just walk up and purchase a ticket .

For all these special events, there is a limited number of spaces available, and as they are popular, they tend to sell out fast so you really have to book in advance , sometimes long in advance.

Is it better to see the Colosseum at night or during the day?

These are two really different visits, and different ways to see the Colosseum.

Visiting the Colosseum by day - pros and cons

Here are the pros of visiting the Colosseum by day :

• You can visit on your own, without a guide (although I personally think it's ideal to visit the Colosseum with a tour guide so you get the history and all the  fun Colosseum facts !) 
• You have a large choice of times to go during the day's opening hours and can spend as much time as you like inside.
• Going by day means you also have included in the ticket, a visit to the Roman Forum / Palatine Hill (it's two parks but considered one because you can walk between them.) 
• And you have 2 consecutive days to do it (although there is no re-entry, so each site can be visited once in that 48-hour period.) That is a lot of flexibility, and a lot to see.

Here are the cons of visiting the Colosseum by day :

• The crowds and noise level are pretty distracting.
• In a normal daytime visit, you cannot visit the arena floor or the underground unless you book a Full Experience ticket or tour.
• Did I mention the crowds?

Visiting the Colosseum by night - pros and cons

Here are the pros of visiting the Colosseum by night :

• It's absolutely stunning to see this monument, inside and out, lit up this way.
• You will have the Colosseum almost entirely to yourselves (there may be just a couple of other tour groups in there and they stagger the visits, so you mostly feel like your group is the only in there.)
• You get to go out onto the arena floor , and again, as you are nearly alone, this is a unique and special experience. I could not stop looking around me with my mouth gaping open.
• You get to visit the Hypogeum (underground) , and as you are in the dark (but with lights of course), it's even more realistic, since that is how the gladiators saw it back then. Just dark.
• You will have a lot of time to just take in what you are looking at, PLUS take photos and videos . You will really get the full immersion without the distraction of hordes of people and lots of noise.

Here are the cons of visiting the Colosseum by night :

• It costs more than visiting during the day.
• You can ONLY see the Colosseum , but not the Roman Forum or Palatine Hill .
• It sells out long in advance so can be hard to book.

All about the Rome Colosseum

So which one should you do?

If you have never been to Rome before, you may want to do the daytime visit so you can also see the Roman Forum / Palatine Hill .

And take a tour of that so you get all the history and info.

And, if you've been to the Colosseum before, or if you have time on your trip to Rome, add a night visit.

You will never look at the Colosseum the same way again.

When is the Colosseum open at night?

When they started offering Colosseum night visits, it was only available during spring / summer / fall .

As of this writing in late 2023, visits seem to begin in early spring and go through the New Year Holidays .

As the season slows down and it gets colder, there are fewer of them.

In winter months, you can often only go on the weekends, but this seems to differ from one year to the next, and I think they adjust it according to whatever the current supply/demand is.

Also note it is NOT available on the Free Sunday or other free dates (on the first Sunday of each month, and some other dates during the year , like November 4 and April 21 , many sites and museums are free for everyone, and there are no special visits that day.)

As for what time they go, they start having visits about an hour after the regular closing time, and stagger the entry times.

So for example, in July, when the Colosseum closes at 7pm, they start visits sometime after 8pm, but you might get an entry time of say, 9:40pm.

This way it's always in the dark , and as they stagger the entry times, you will not spend much time together with any other tour groups.

Do you have to take a tour?  How long does it last?

Yes, to visit the Colosseum by night, you must take a tour .

And the tour has to be with someone from Parco Colosseo, the organization that manages the Colosseum and its ticket sales.

When you book a tour with an outside company, you will still get the guide you booked, who works for that company.

But when you enter for the Colosseum night tour , someone from Parco Colosseo  just comes along, in part to make sure you keep to your time-table.

But rest assured, you will have the tour guide you booked.

A Colosseum night tour booked through Parco Colosseo  lasts just over an hour.

A tour with an outside company will likely last longer, as they usually try to cover some more ground and information, to make it a more complete tour.

For example, your guide might set a meeting point at Piazza Venezia, and then give you a tour of that piazza and the via dei Fori Imperiali on your way to the Colosseum.

The length will depend on the tour company but usually it will be around 2 - 2.5 hours.

How do you book a Colosseum night tour?

There are two ways to book a tour of the Colosseum by night, through Parco Colosseo , or through a private tour company .

If you book through Parco Colosseo , it will cost less, but if you want a more complete tour, or, if you find Parco Colosseo  tickets sold out, you may want to try booking a tour with an outside company.

Book a tour of the Colosseum by night through  Parco Colosseo

Parco Colosseo  is the entity that runs the ticketing for the Colosseum (also the Roman Forum/Palatine and the Domus Aurea too.) 

You can book your Colosseum night tour directly through Parco Colosseo , online.

The 25€ ticket you buy for the Colosseum night visit through Parco Colosseo  is a ticket for entry and includes the guide in the language you choose.

If you want a more complete tour, that includes other parts of Ancient Rome by night, you may want to consider booking a Colosseum night tour through a tour agency .

On a recent tour, w e began at the Vittoriano monument (the "wedding cake"), and walked from there to Campidoglio for some night Roman Forum views.

Once we arrived at the Colosseum, our guide handled everything and in we went (you do have to pass through security so I remind you, no selfie sticks or tripods allowed .)

We had the place nearly to ourselves.

A guide from the Colosseum joined our group, but mostly served to keep us on track time-wise.

Our guide was the one who guided us the whole time, and it was fantastic.

You may also wish to book a Colosseum night tour on GetYourGuide   because it's hard to book and because space is so limited.

When you go on a tour booking site like these, you can enter your date(s) and see WHO has a tour available then.

Yes, booking a tour with an agency is more expensive than with Parco Colosseo .

But you will have a more complete tour this way.

And, if the tickets through Parco Colosseo  are sold out, you may find that by booking a tour, you can find space available.

You'll experience the arena in all its glory as you explore the nearly empty arena with your expert guide telling hair-raising tales of its bloody past. You'll start your Colosseum night tour in the historic Jewish Quarter. Take a look at the Teatro di Marcello—an ancient amphitheater that looks like a miniature Colosseum—before making your way towards the main event. Along the way, you'll pass by Piazza Venezia, seeing the monument that represents new Rome and new Italy—and by far one of the most beautiful buildings in Rome to be seen at night. Last year I was in Rome and did a Coliseum tour in the day . . . I didn’t want to go again after that experience but my family wanted to. I am so glad I did! The night tour was a completely different experience and 100% worth it! Going at night without the intense crowds and not in the heat of the day made it so much easier to immerse yourself into the experience and enjoy the information received. Multimedia light shows conjure up ancient rome by night..

The history of ancient Rome comes to life thanks to the Viaggi nei Fori project, a multimedia display screened on the ruins of the Forum of Augustus and Forum of Caesar, each evening from 10 June until 2 October 2022.

Created by Piero Angela and Paco Lanciano, the show uses light, images, film and animation to conjure up portrayals of life in ancient Rome, watched from elevated seats alongside Via dei Fori Imperiali.

Taking as its base the existing marble columns and ruins, the shows use cutting-edge technology to reconstruct the forum areas as they were in imperial times.

Tickets can be pre-purchased online on the website or via the call centre, tel. 060608 (active every day 09.00-19.00). The tickets can also be purchased on site and at tourist info-points.

Full ticket price for each show €15 or combined ticket for both shows €25.

10 June-31 July : daily 21.15, 22.15, 23.15.

1-31 August : daily 21.00, 22.00, 23.00.

1 Sept-2 Oct : daily 20.15, 21.15, 22.15.

On Sunday night, the show revealed its top 20 singers and eliminated four aspiring “Idol” winners from the competition. Overnight voting from viewers will then determine who makes it to the top 14 the following night.

What happens during the ‘American Idol’ top 20 round?

During Sunday night’s episode, “Idol” revealed the top 20 singers. Each of the 20 remaining contestants performed a song of their choice in the hopes of continuing on in the competition.

Sunday’s episode also featured special performances from Lauren Spencer-Smith, Teddy Swims and Paul Russell.

Spencer-Smith reached the “American Idol” top 20 in Season 18, and released her debut album, “Mirror,” last year. Swims is known for his breakout hit last year, “Lose Control,” which hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, per the entertainment site Gold Derby . And Russell is well known for his breakout single, “Little Boo Thang,” which started climbing Billboard charts last year. He is an opening act on Meghan Trainor’s 2024 Timeless tour .

The “American Idol” top 20 round aired April 14 from 7 to 10 p.m. MDT on ABC. The top 14 reveal will air the following night from 7 to 9 p.m. MDT.

How to vote for ‘American Idol’ top 20

Voting for the top 20 round will determine who advances to the top 14 Monday night, the Deseret News previously reported. According to the “Idol” TV listing for Monday night, the 10 singers with the most votes from viewers will advance to the next round, while celebrity judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan pick the remaining four to round out the top 14.

The voting window for the top 20 round begins at the end of the East Coast broadcast of “American Idol” on April 14 and ends at 7 a.m. MDT on April 15, according to idolvote.abc.com .

There are three ways to vote on “American Idol”:

• Vote online at idolvote.abc.com (fans must create an account to vote).
• Vote via the “American Idol” app, which can be downloaded through the App Store or Google Play Store .
• Vote via text. During each “Idol” episode, a contestant will have a specific number that can be texted to “21523.”

Viewers can submit up to 10 votes per voting method per contestant, according to idolvote.abc.com .
