New York Botanical Gardens - May 5, 2024

Established in 1891, The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) is distinguished by the beauty of its landscape, collections, and gardens, and the scope and excellence of its programs in horticulture, education, and science. NYBG was inspired by an 1888 visit that eminent botanists Nathaniel Lord Britton and his wife, Elizabeth, took to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, near London. The Brittons believed New York should have a great botanical garden to advance public understanding of plants, be a repository of rare and valuable specimens, and lead original research in botanical science.

Today, the 250-acre Garden—the largest in any city in the United States—is a National Historic Landmark. In addition to the natural attributes that attracted the Brittons, NYBG encompasses 50 specialty gardens and collections comprising more than one million plants, the Nolen Greenhouses for Living Collections, and the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, the nation’s preeminent Victorian-style glasshouse. Highlights include the award-winning Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden, considered among the world’s most sustainable rose gardens; the Native Plant Garden, celebrating the diversity of northeastern North American plants; and 30,000 distinguished trees, many more than 200 years old. More than one million visitors annually enjoy the grounds, view innovative exhibitions, and participate in educational programs that are larger and more diverse than those of any other garden in the world.

Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island - June 2, 2024

Liberty enlightening the world.

"The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World" was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States and is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886.  It was designated as a National Monument in 1924.  Employees of the National Park Service have been caring for the colossal copper statue since 1933.

In May of 2019, Lady Liberty’s legacy expanded with the opening of the Statue of Liberty Museum. Housed within the Statue of Liberty Museum are three interactive galleries that tell the statue's history in thought-provoking ways. Each gallery is designed to inspire visitors. The museum replaced a small exhibition inside the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty and allows millions of visitors to enjoy the Statue of Liberty experience and be inspired by the iconic statue.

Siracusa transportation

How to get around siracusa by bus, taxi, and car.

The pages for each of those sights contains detailed instructions on how to get to and from them using public transportation.

Here is some general info on getting around Siracusa:

Sircusa by bus

AST city buses make circular routes.

Most city buses start and end at Riva Nazario Sauro (a.k.a. Piazza della Posta) just over the bridge on Ortigia.

Some buses start/end at Via G. Rubino, in front of the main train station .

Bus no. 20 and two "Navette" shuttles go from the train station to the far end of Ortigia. Each runs every half-hour, staggered so there's something leaving every 15 minutes. (There's also bus no. 29, which goes from the station as far as Riva N. Sauro on the north end of Ortigia, but only every 105 minutes or so.)

» You can also easily walk to Ortigia from the train station in 10–15 minutes: turn left out of the station and stroll the dozen or so blocks thorugh Piazza Marconi (a.k.a. Foro Siracusiano) and down Corso Umberto to cross over into Ortigia.

In additon to the main city buses, there are three navette (shuttle buses) that thread the roads of the downtown island of Ortigia, each along a slightly different route. Two, as stated above, also venture on to the mainland to the train station and back; the other begins and ends at the Talete parking garage on Ortigia and runs every 15 minutes.

For more info: www.aziendasicilianatrasporti.it .

Siracusa by car

Since 2007, much of the island of Ortigia is closed to non-resident vehicles as a ZTL ("Zona Traffico Limitato," which is easy to translate: "Limited Traffic Zone").

(Parking costs €0.60 per hour in most spots, though the "Talete" lot raises the fee to €1 from 10pm to 2:30pm—meaning it's only €0.60 per hour from 2:30pm to 10pm each afternoon/evening.)

It's all pretty well sign-posted, but I copied the official ZTL map to the right, and here's a link to information on the ZTL (in Italian only, unfortunately).

  • Orange streets are ZTL (you can't drive there)
  • Green streets are ZSC (you can drive there but park only in designated lots/spaces)
  • Purple streets are pedestrian only
  • White streets are a drivable corridor through the center (see below)

There is also one throughfare cutting down and across the island on which anybody can drive (but not park) Monday to Friday between 6am and 8pm: south down Corso Matteotti, then left in Piazza Archimede to follow Via Maestranza to the Lungomare di Levante, where you have to turn north again.

Siracusa by taxi

For a taxi dial tel . +39-06-9933-0555 ( www.siracusataxi.com )—or call one of the three main taxi stands directly: tel . +39-0931-69-722 (train station taxi rank), 0931-64-323 (Via Ticino taxi rank), or 0931-60-980 (Piazza Pancali taxi rank).

Taxis rides have a €3 flag fall, €0.13 per 100m/20 sec., and a minimum €5 charge (plus extra fees for night and Sunday service, bags, and €2 if you call ahead for one).

Siracusa Open Tours, Hop-on Hop-off. A great value and convenient way to get around the city!

The Siracusa Open Tour is a good way to get around Syracuse, Italy and get a feel for the city. Since the entire route only takes about an hour and has only ten stops my wife and I stayed on the bus for two laps so that we could see everything. It is a great value costing only $5.00 Euros per person per day.

syracuse city bus tour

This tour was perfect for getting around Siracusa and Ortigia and seeing some of the main sights these places have to offer. The audio guide is not the best, but you can jump on and off throughout the day at numerous locations. Only 5€ per person so great value for money.

The bus tour is a good value for your money if you want to get a way of the land and hope on and off the bus at different stops as we did. But do not expect a guided tour or you would be disappointed. They announce h stops in few languages and make few additional comments, that’s all. Definitely not a tour! But worked for us

We decided to do the 'Siracusa Open Tour' to give us a better idea of the main attractions in Syracuse and Ortigia. The buses used are quite unlike your usual double decker open top sightseeing buses - they are mini buses, with open windows, which hold in the region of 28 passengers. The service runs every half an hour during the day with the last bus being about 7:30pm. The price was 5 euros per adult and this allowed you to hop-on, hop-off all day. We got off at a couple of points which were of interest to us, then got back on again and completed the circuit. We also used it again in the early evening to go back to a specific place that interested us. Worth mentioning too that after paying your 5 euros you are issued with a new set of earphones (which are yours to keep) which plug into the audio system (one located on the back of each seat). This system also allows you to select different languages. The majority of the drivers drove slowly giving a smooth ride. We thought that on the whole it represented very good value for money.

syracuse city bus tour

We had arrived in Syracuse by train for a quick day’s sightseeing. We had walked up to the Archaeological Park to see the Roman and Greek remains. We spotted the ‘Hop on Hop off’ tour bus in the tourist area as we were about to leave and decided that it would be a good way to get back into the town and to see the layout of the town and where we would like to visit. In fact we went right around the circuit before we got off. The earpieces gave a reasonable account of what we were seeing as the bus drove around. The trip was good value at €5 a head for a ticket that lasted all day and the buses where scheduled to run every 30 minutes. Having seen as much of the town as we could walking around, we had hoped to hop on again to go back towards the station but alas the next hopper bus did not arrive on schedule so we had to resort to a taxi instead. Yes they are a good way to see around the town but they can difficult to catch in the most touristic parts of the town due to the number of people wishing to get onto what is a small bus.

For 5 euros, Hop-on, hop-off. Even off season in late Sept., the number of folks waiting to get on at the major sites can overwhelm capacity. Ear phones for audio notes in major languages are provided.

Syracuse Jazz Fest reveals 2024 lineup: Kenny G, The O’Jays and oh, so much more

Syracuse Jazz Fest is returning for its 38th year with some of the biggest names in jazz, R&B and much more.

The 2024 National Grid Syracuse International Jazz Fest will take place June 26-30, at multiple venues in Syracuse, N.Y. Headliners include Kenny G on Friday, June 28; The O’Jays on Saturday, June 29; and the previously announced The Mavericks on Thursday, June 27; all three concerts will take place on the main Amazon Outdoor Stage in Clinton Square.

The fun will kick off Wednesday, June 26, with local artists performing in 20 different venues throughout Syracuse. Other artists on the schedule include McKinley James and the Catherine Russell Band on Thursday, June 27; the Gunhild Carling Big Band (”Sweden’s Queen of Swing”) and a celebration of Ella Fitzgerald by the Freda Payne Big Band on Friday, June 28; Gino Vanelli and James Carter Quintet on Saturday, June 29; and “Return to Community: A Sunday Gospel Jazz Service” at Syracuse University’s Hendricks Chapel on Sunday, June 30.

All Jazz Fest performances are free to attend.

Festival director Frank Malfitano and participating sponsors announced the full lineup Friday in a press conference. (Scroll down to see performance schedule.)

Kenny G, who previously played Jazz Fest in 2012 and 2013, is a smooth jazz saxophonist and one of the best-selling artists of all time. He’s released more than a dozen albums and won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition with 1994′s “Forever in Love.”

The O’Jays are an R&B, soul and funk group known for songs like “Love Train,” “For the Love of Money,” and “I Love Music.” The band, currently on a farewell tour with original members Eddie Levert and Walter Lee Williams, has been inducted in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame.

The Mavericks are a Grammy-winning band known for their mix of country, rock, Latin, Americana and pop music on songs like “All You Ever Do is Bring Me Down,” “What a Crying Shame” and “Dance the Night Away.” The Raul Malo-led group previously performed at Syracuse Jazz Fest in 2017 .

“It all starts with the music, that’s the reason we’re here,” Malfitano said Friday.

Syracuse Jazz Fest, the northeast’s largest free jazz festival, returned in 2022 after a four-year hiatus. More than 20,000 people attended 2023′s event, which featured Herbie Hancock , Gladys Knight, Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, Tower of Power, Spyro Gyra and an expanded, five-day schedule .

“All of the clubs were packed to capacity. We had two dozen clubs, bars, restaurants and hotels downtown operating with live music simultaneously so people could go around and club hop. And every place was packed and the music was great,” Malfitano said last year. “I think we finally found a model that allows us to more successfully integrate the talent that we have here (in Central New York).”
