Mumbai is synonymous to Bollywood and when in Mumbai, a visit to the Film City becomes must for any traveller. The entire film city is spread across an area of 520 acres with 16 air-conditioned indoor studios and 42 outdoor shoot locations, all located within the city premises.

The official name of Film City Mumbai is ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Chitra Nagari’ and is operated under the administration of Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation Limited, a government organization undertaking.

Some of the iconic sets of the film city Mumbai are from movies like Sholay, Happy New Year, Josh, Amar Akbar Anthony, Hera Pheri, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, No Entry, Devdas and many more. The iconic water tank scene from the movie Sholay was shot here wherein Dharmendra gets on top of a water tank to jump off for Hema Malini. The water tank still stands here.

The indoor studios include a total of 16 studios which have sets of a court, hospital, police station, helicopter landing area, a building complex, etc.

Over 900 films have been shot in film city Mumbai till date and hence, it is apt to call it an iconic landmark of Mumbai city and also deserves to be on top priority list of the visitors. Apart from feature films, there are numerous television shows and TV commercials that have been shot here in the film city. Both Hindi and Marathi television series are shot here.

History of Mumbai Film City

The history of India being introduced to Cinema dates back to the year 1896, when the very first feature film was screened at the Watson Hotel in Bombay (Mumbai was then known as Bombay). Although it wasn’t an Indian language film, it still managed the Indian creative minds to be fascinated and trigger intrigue and get into learning the craft of filmmaking.

The first full length motion film of Indian origin was produced by Dadasaheb Phalke, who is considered as the pioneer of Indian Cinema. He had produced the epic Raja Harishchandra, a silent feature film starring a cast of all male actors since females weren’t considered for acting jobs back then. The film was released in 1913.

Coming to the history of Film City Mumbai, the seed that was sown in 1913 after the release of Raja Harishchandra, kept on growing and prospering. It was during the year 1977 when visionaries of Indian Cinema like Late Shri V. Shantaram, Late Shri B. R. Chopra and the legendary actor Dilip Kumar came together and persuaded for the establishment of Maharashtra Film, Stage & Cultural Development Corporation Ltd., which was also called Filmcity.

This was done by the Department of Cultural Affairs Government of Maharashtra under the Company Act 1956, on 26th September 1977. It was given the name Film City and was later renamed as Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari in 2001 to recognize the contribution of the founder of Indian Film Industry.

The Film City was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Yashwantrao Chavan.

Since then, Indian Film Industry has become the highest number of feature films producing entities followed by Nigerian Film Industry, followed by Hollywood. The numbers are as of 2013.

Tours at Mumbai Film City

Bollywood dream tour.

The Film City Bollywood dream tour is a two-hour guided tour wherein one gets to see the live shoot sets, studios, reserved gardens, Khandala lake, temple, church, court house, jail, hill view, kaliya maidan (total 3), Appu Pappu maidan (total 4), jungle outdoor, adlab complex, and other places.

One can actually witness the backend work that goes behind the making of a film. The guide takes the visitors through the history of film city and also the post- production activities that are a mandate in making a film.

The film city tours are very time specific and the guides strictly abide by the timelines. The visitors are told about the history of Indian cinema and its evolution.

Mumbai Film City Tour

This tour is about visits to live shoots.

Also, photography is prohibited on the sets of a live shoot. One can get a sneak peek into the shooting and their beloved actors however, most of the time, the actors prefer staying inside their vanity vans.

Many television series are also shot here in film city and the visitors can come across such a shooting while on their Bollywood tour. Tourists can as well participate in some reality shows being a part of the live audience like ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’.

Combination Tour

The combination tour is a mix of Mumbai film city tour and Bollywood dream tour wherein, the visitors are given a tour of external and internal shoot locations, sets, session on history of Indian Cinema, the details on post production processes and activities and witness them too.

This is an exclusive Bollywood tour that is customized for visitors wherein they could witness live shoots along with a Bollywood dance show being shot live. The visitors are also given a tour of post-production facilities wherein they can witness the behind the scene details.

About 35 years old now, Filmcity is the only 520 acres huge plot at Goregaon East suburb jungle with about 16 studios and 42 ready locations to shoot outdoor and indoor like Gardens, Open Play Grounds, Appu Maidan, BNHS Jungle , Ready Church, Court, Open flat roads, Khandala temple Road, Log Huts, Famous Temple as you see in most movies, Helipads, Beautiful Lakes, Small ponds and Small rivers, Hills for awesome view, Bungalow Sets, Open Crop Fields, Bamboo Plantations, Sunsire / Sunset Point, Studio Booking, Natural Village Sets, Waterfalls Location, Car parking buildings, Paywat Mud Road, Farishte Maidan, Communication and Admin centre, Train sequence sets and lots more well surrounded by lush greenery, valleys, woods with natural flora and fauna’s blessed by another huge attraction called Sanjay Gandhi National Park , Aarey and Powai Lake area and more. At least one or more scenes is compulsory to be shot inside ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Chitra Nagri’ for any Hindi movie to get censor board clearance. Since then filmcity has seen almost all actors, small or big, Bollywood or TV serials, adults or kids, Hindi or marathi or any regional stage actors having their presence here. The guided filmcity tour ‘Tour De Filmcity’ by Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has been opened to public now and be sure a mega hit and also be on the list of Mumbai attractions . From ad Films to TV Serial and those big budget Bollywood films, everything goes here.

For some lawful reasons this tour is restricted for Foreign Tourists. If you are a foreigner (Foreign National) in Mumbai and still interested to enjoy this attraction and get the tour experience, you need to get special permissions from Filmcity Administrative Department Office of Mumbai, contact at (+91-22-28401533 / +91-22-28403530 / +91-22-28497500) which is located inside same premise OR MTDC OR Mantralaya (Main Government Body located at South Mumbai). Charges for foreign national will be much higher compared to local citizens or any Indian national. There are 3 tours operated per day and booking can be done at Filmcity main gate or online (See below all details). Studios and Sets Inside Filmcity

With about 16 Ready Studios both Air-conditioned and Non-AC spread in about 1 Lakh square feet area, This 520 Acres of land in film city studio also has 42 outdoor and indoor shoot locations for Television, Hindi and Marathi Movies, Dramas and anything related to film and entertainment media. Below are basic details of this studios and sets of which few will be seen from inside guided tour bus. As the touring bus starts a video is played and parallel is the voice of the guide. He explains details in Hindi of every location and sets seen on the way with its name as seen on board. I also feel they should guide and explaining in English too which will be an added advantage and help for foreign tourists, else will be all seating blank without any clue on what he says.  Please keep a note that not each and every location and place of above 500 acres of plot as detailed on this page will be covered in 2 hours limited tour time. Yet, the main sets and studios can be seen on the way.

This Maya Nagri Filmcity tour starts from main gate at 3 different time slots per day (See below). The guide inside starts the video which initially details some age old historic details and facts of Bollywood world and film city, then the guide starts to narrate the location name along with TV Serial and Film sets and studios (Made of Plaster Of Paris) as seen and details with name of all those movies and TV serials like Suhani si ek ladki, Yum hai Hum, Reporters, Mahakumb, Saraswati Chandra, Utraan, Dream Girl, Udaan, Maharana Pratap, Mahabharat, Lapata Gunj, Chidiya Ghar, Madhubala, been shot in that place. Below are some of the sets along the tour which has a display with location name written on it. Very important locations covered are Reliance media Office, Work Woods and Office of Director Subhash Ghai. Vanity vans and many small big actors can be seen along side of road during tour. Last few locations will be interesting as the famous temple and a hilly area is covered. This hilly location is all we see in movies as Manali, Ooty, Masoori, Kashmir where legendary actors and all débutante once till date shoots for their films.

• Next feel is Udaipur kind as you see the Tv sets of ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’.
• Order, Order the set is a silent zone is real life outside. Yes, its a Court premises.
• Take your blessing to the passing by Church where many actors already did in films like ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ and latest ‘Ajab Prem Ki..’.
• You see the Baburao of Heri Pheri film has done its shoot here on the Chawl sets.
• The Current TV sensational set which was once burnt is the next, Yes thats ‘Comedy Nights Set’. Remember the Water Tank in Movie Sholay ? Dharam Paji got on top to Jump for Hemamalini ? Its the next.
• Salman’s ready movie steps and ladders can be seen next.
• BREAK TIME but another excitement for all as you are allowed to get down the bus and walk along the lake of filmcity. Yes this is the same lake that was seen in film shoots of Devdas, Mission Kashmir, R-Rajkumar and more.
• The tour bus moves next towards a location called ‘Check Post’ and ‘Road Forking Set’ which you might have seen in movies like ‘Gangajal’ and John starer ‘Force’.
• Next, this AC bus takes a leap to hills of filmcity from where you can peep and see the famous ‘ Powai Lake ‘ and locations of film shoots like Hum Dil De Chuke.., No Entry etc.
• Bus moves towards a Helipad inside filmcity used many a times, Remember Lion Of Bollywood who frequently traveled using this vehicle from here.
• Next is the ‘Echo Point’ and Famous temple as seen in pictures on this page.
• There are many other studios and set from which bus passes like Houses, Gardens and Khandala Bridge, Campus area etc.
• Finally before it takes break again for snacks at a restaurant, You must not miss the sets of famous ‘Tarak Mehta Ka Oolta (Ulta) Chasma’

Filmcity Tour Timings, Charges and Bookings

Timings : This AC bus tour starts 3 times in a day. Tour timings are different for weekdays and weekends and holidays.

Weekdays Timings:

• 11:30 Morning to 1:30 Afternoon
• 2:00 Afternoon to 4:00 Evening
• 4:30 Evening to 6:30 Evening

Weekends and Holidays Timings:

• 11:00 to 1:00 and 11:30 Morning to 1:30 Afternoon
• 1:30 to 3:30 and 2:00 Afternoon to 4:00 Evening
• 4:00 to 6:00 and 4:30 Evening to 6:30 Evening

Entry Charges : Rs.499 Per Head are the charges for all Indian Citizens. Foreign tourists needs to get extra permissions as not allowed and tentative charges are Rs. 3250/- (Which comes to Approximate $53 to $55). Keep note that details on charges may vary from time to time and we will try to update the rates as possible. Entry fees free for children below 5 years of age. (12.36% Service Tax Extra).

Ticket Bookings : Filmcity tour bus booking can be done directly at Main gate or also cane be done online at their website .

Touring Terms and Conditions

• Tobacco and Its Products, drinking are restricted.
• Keep Mobile Phones on Silent Mode inside tour bus.
• Always remain with tour group and bus guide.
• You are not allowed to rush towards shooting area if any actors seen.
• Do not touch any property inside Filmcity, Else penalty Applied.
• Be on or before time near tour bus area. As tour starts on time and wait cannot be done.
• Please keep the tour and Filmcity locations clean. Do not litter.
• Photography and Videos only allowed in certain areas.
• Ticket booking if cancelled is not refundable.
• Valid ID proofs (Pan Card, Voters ID, Driving License, Passport) and as listed online on Filmcity website has to be carried.
• Clicking photographs with celebrities and actors during tour time is restricted.
• You are not allowed to visit any studios from inside.
• One cannot reschedule or cancel tickets if being late to tour on the day.

How To Reach Filmcity Goregaon

Goregaon Station is located in Western Railway Route of Mumbai local trains (See all Station names ). Its is just 2 stations from Andheri (The Airport Station) and Filmcity is located in EAST. On Western Express Highway (NH8) take the road at Oberoi Mall exactly at Junction, Go Straight for few minutes and first right to reach the Filmcity Main gate.

Film City is known to be so huge that at a time approximately 1000 film sets can be placed within the premises, with over 900 movies and even more ad films and tv serials being shot here over the years. A Complete Guide To Goregaon Filmcity, Mumbai

Mumbai, the birthplace of Bollywood attracts millions of people to the city in search of jobs or to solely meet their favourite celebrity. Bollywood influences our society greatly, from clothing trends to celebrations. We want everything to be in Bollywood style.

I’ve spent my childhood watching Govinda movies and grooving to KJo’s movie tracks. Therefore, I decided to visit the Film City during my Mumbai trip in October 2021 to relive my childhood and watch the film sets come alive.

Here’s a video of my tour that’ll give you a glimpse of the enormous Filmcity.

The Film City doesn’t allow walk-in visitors unless you know someone personally who works here. Therefore, the best way to explore this place is to book a tour with the “Mumbai Filmcity Tours” to make the most of your time. They have multiple options to choose from, the lowest starting from 650 INR per person.

What and where is the Filmcity?

Dadasaheb Phalke Chitra Nagari a.k.a, the Filmcity, is named after the father of Indian cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke. A studio complex comprising 16 enclosed and 42 outdoor sets for shooting films and serials, located in Goregaon near Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

Ticket and Timings

Mumbai Filmcity Tours offer three types of guided tours, a short two-hour tour around the Filmcity, a Bollywood city tour that will take you in and around the Filmcity, and a live show tour, where you” get to visit a live shooting set. You can check the timings and book your tickets here .

Tip:  Only limited seats are available for each slots daily. Therefore, I recommend to pre-book tickets online to avoid last minute availability issue.

My experience touring the Filmcity

I booked the two-hour group tour that took us around the Filmcity. A professional guide accompanied us and enthusiastically educated us about the sets, history and ongoing shoots. It was a very informative and entertaining tour that helped us understand the history and culture of the Filmcity. Even though we didn’t spot any celebrities, the anticipation of spotting one made it supremely exciting.

On our way, we stopped by a few outdoor sets and took a 15-minute halt at the cafeteria for refreshments(not complimentary) before heading back. Here’s what I saw at the Filmcity.

Other locations that we came across:

• Bollywood’s favourite suicide point, where the protagonist is either killed (but somehow survives) or jumps voluntarily. This location was also used to shoot some of the most romantic songs in the 90s.
• The famous forest from CID, where ACP Praduman finds most of his clues.
• Daily soap sets like the Goenka villa of Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata ha and Gokuldham society from Tarak Mehta ka Ulta Chashma.
• Other TV show sets like Big Boss, KBC and Comedy Nights with Kapil.

The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. Classic film lovers: See James Dean’s apartment and more on new TCM tour at Warner Bros.

In 2021, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour created new interactive exhibits focused on the company’s recent history, unveiling areas dedicated to the DC Comics universe and the “Harry Potter” franchise.

This week, the popular Studio Tour in Burbank is doubling down on its more distant past.

Warner Bros. is now offering a Turner Classic Movies-branded version of its studio tour that will bring guests to previously off-limit areas of the lot, including vintage animation buildings, a mini rose garden and an apartment that once housed James Dean. The 90-minute tram portion of the jaunt — about 30 minutes longer than the studio’s standard tram excursion — will allow guides to go deeper into the history of the studio’s catalog to deliver factoids related to such films as “Casablanca,” “My Fair Lady,” “Rebel Without a Cause,” “Auntie Mame” and many more.

“We’re off the leash,” says Brad Taylor, a 15-year tour guide veteran with Warner Bros., noting that the TCM excursion will include time for guides to chat with visitors about their favorite films.

“We get to talk to the guests and really hang out with people who have the same passion that we do,” Taylor says. “I find that ‘classics’ guests are less about behind-the-scenes and more, ‘I can’t believe this is where we are.’ It’s just the look on their faces when they realize ‘Casablanca’ filmed here, or James Dean stood right here.”

The launch of the TCM tour arrives during the network’s 30th anniversary and close to 12 months after classic film fans were given a scare. In June, Warner Bros. announced that layoffs would hit TCM, including some of the network’s top executives, prompting concern from prestige directors such as Steven Spielberg, Paul Thomas Anderson and Martin Scorsese. After garnering national attention, key cuts were reversed and Warner Bros. sought to assure fans that TCM would continue to be handled with care.

TCM network hosts — Eddie Muller, Jacqueline Stewart, Ben Mankiewicz, Alicia Malone and Dave Karger — recorded new video segments for the outing. The tour will take guests into the lot’s Property House, an area not visited by the standard tour. Here, visitors can get glimpses of materials for a full set, including items for a complete Oval Office setting, but expect guides to highlight vintage items, such as a throne from the Errol Flynn pirate film “Captain Blood.”

Danny Kahn, vice president-general manager of the studio tour, says there have been numerous requests over the years from guests to delve a little deeper into the studio’s animation history. That’s why the TCM tour will for the first time take visitors to an area of the lot once known as “Termite Terrace,” which from 1955 to 1964, says Taylor, housed the animation department, a building with a sloped roof designed to capture sunlight. Animation legend Chuck Jones, says Kahn, had an office in the Termite Terrace area in the 1990s despite Warner’s moving animation production elsewhere.

Another unique tour locale is the exterior of the Dean apartment. When Dean resided there during filming of “East of Eden,” it was actually across the street from the lot, the apartment nesting above a pharmacy. But gradual studio expansion has led to the area now being on Warner Bros. property.

“That was an actual drugstore with apartments, and the studio rented it for him,” Kahn says. “I think it was to keep an eye on him and keep him on a short leash.”

The tour will also give tram riders a look at executive life at the studio, allowing them to briefly walk around a rose garden. The manicured spaces once held a tennis court as well as offices and personal screening rooms for the likes of studio mogul Jack Warner, with many of the structures dating to the 1920s. “It’s a really historic area of the lot that hasn’t really changed a lot in all these years,” says Kahn, noting the area is still in use by studio principals. “Jack Warner, when he ran the studio, privatized the first floor. That was a massage parlor that he had beneath his office.”

Staples of the tour, such as a journey around the backlot city streets, a visit to the “Friends” set and cafe and recent additions highlighting the studio’s modern franchise films are included in the TCM trek, as is a pre-tour reception with beverages and pastries. All told, expect the tour to last about 3½ hours. A tour spokesperson says the first TCM-branded outing is scheduled for Wednesday, with trams expected to depart daily after that date. Adult tickets are $95, but there is a Southern California resident discount available for $75.

“It feels so good to have TCM here,” Kahn says. “People understand that the TCM brand is synonymous with classic film.”
