Kochi: The Cochin International airport initiated procedures to adopt the guidelines issued by the central government over new Covid testing methods in view of the Omicron variant. A meeting presided by the CIAL managing director S Suhas IAS with several agencies and departments analysed the situation.
CIAL has been operating direct flights from Singapore and the UK which are listed among the high-risk countries by the central government.
The airport authority has been conducting compulsory RT-PCR tests for the passengers who are arriving directly or through other airports from high-risk countries. Along with this, random testing is being conducted for 5 per cent of travellers who reach here from other countries. CIAL has constituted facilities to test 350 persons at a time. It was also decided to give away the results of the test as soon as possible.
Even though the test result comes negative, the passengers have to undergo home quarantine. Those who test positive will be shifted to special health centres. Their samples will be sent for genome tests to detect the Covid variant. Later, the procedures advised in the guidelines of the central government will be followed.
Those who obtained a negative result in the test administered at the airport should undergo an RT-PCR test on the eighth day of home quarantine. They should continue home quarantine if they test positive and in case of a negative result, shall continue self-observation.

International Passengers
Passengers from foreign countries will be tested to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant. Those who test positive for the virus will be shifted to isolated wards. Travellers coming from ‘AT Risk’ countries (European countries including The United Kingdom, South Africa, Brazil, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Israel ) are subjected to a week home quarantine, even if they test negative for the virus. After 7 days of home quarantine, another test will be held and if the report is negative, they will have to self-monitor themselves for another week. The travellers will have to bear the price of COVID-19 testing.
Children, under 5 years of age, are exempted from any testing, however, if they are symptomatic, they will have to undergo the laid protocols. Thermal Screening will be carried out upon arrival at the airport.
Also Watch:
Domestic Passengers
All domestic passengers also have to undergo thermal screening. It is mandatory that travellers must carry the vaccination certificate (both doses) and an RT-PCR negative report (taken within 72 hours before the start of journey). Passengers have to register on the COVID-19 Jagratha portal. Travellers should also have a valid e-pass for Kerala and any other state (they intent to visit). If an individual is tested negative, there is no home quarantine. However, if the passengers test positive, they will have to follow the state guidelines of isolation and testing.

New Covid guidelines have Kerala tourism sector in a bind
KOCHI: The new travel guidelines issued by the Central Government have gotten those associated with the tourism industry into a tizzy. Many fear the new guidelines will lead to a flurry of cancellations and some have already seen such a situation unfold. Everyone associated with the industry is keeping their fingers crossed, hoping that a repeat of the days of restriction doesn’t happen.
According to a tour guide (under the condition of anonymity), it is true everyone in the industry is worried. “The operators are under extreme pressure. People are not saying anything. But the atmosphere inside the industry is heavy. Many of them have invested a lot, especially in outbound tours.
Some of the trips from France booked for February and March has already gotten cancelled. However, I feel that it is premature to get all worked up. Things might not pan out negatively,” he said. Meanwhile, Rojin V M, another tour guide said, “The news has had an adverse effect.
Already several French FITs have started cancelling their trips that were planned in February and March to India. These restrictions will definitely backfire on us. Nobody wants to take the risk of getting tested positive at the airport upon arrival.” According to Rojin, even if they are to explain to the guests that all these are just precautionary measures, they won’t believe them.
“The guests take the word from the media more. Also, elderly tourists don’t want to take risks” he said. Another tour guide said some trips, mainly UK clients, got cancelled as soon as the news about the restrictions first broke a week ago.
“Now comes another batch of guidelines. Luckily, the countries from where a majority of the tourists arrive have not been included,” he said. Geethu Mohandas, founder, LetsGoForACamp, also said trips are getting cancelled after the new guidelines were released.
