I’m going to be assigning my 11th grade honors US History class “In the Heart of the Sea” as their second marking period reading assignment. Being mainly 1st and 2nd generation immigrants, I thought a trip to Mystic Seaport at the end of the first marking period would greatly enhance their reading comprehension as they delve into the book. That said, how to pay for such a great experience?

Thank you in advance for your consideration and assistance. I will be excitedly awaiting your reply!!

History Field Trip Grant Program Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to your important questions about the american battlefield trust's history field trip grant program program..

Who is eligible to apply for the History Field Trip Grant Program?

Current K-12 educators and administrations are eligible to apply for field trip funding.

Can a parent or PTA member apply to the History Field Trip Grant Program?

No. Due to prior issues in this area, we only work directly with active educators, administrators, schools, and school districts.

How many times can I apply to the History Field Trip Grant Program?

Only one application per school district, per year, may be submitted.

I want to take a school club on a field trip, can I apply for funding?

Yes. While we prefer to send classes to battlefields and historic sites, we will consider field trips conducted by school clubs.

I have an adult field trip that I am planning, can I apply to the History Field Trip Grant Program?

No, the History Field Trip Grant Program is meant to fund only K-12 field trips.

Is there a deadline for applying to the History Field Trip Grant Program?

No, we have a rolling admissions policy. You can apply throughout the school year and summer. However, you must apply for field trip funding at least one month prior to your trip.

I don't know the dates or locations of my field trip, should I apply to the History Field Trip Grant Program anyhow?

No, if you do not know the date or locations of your trip we will automatically reject your application and ask that you apply when you have the information.

My school has received funding through the History Field Trip Grant Program over the last 12-18 months, can we still apply?

Yes, but we do take the number of classes that we have funded field trips for, from each school district, into consideration.

Can I apply to fund a field trip that we have already taken?

No, all trips must be pre-approved by the American Battlefield Trust.

What should I include on the application?

You should answer all questions honestly and to your best ability. Our staff does confirm the information you provide about your school, class size, destinations, etc. Any falsely provided information will automatically disqualify your application.

We also consider:

  • School's financial needs.
  • School's geographic location.
  • The number of students and chaperones participating in said field trip.
  • The thoroughness of the application packet.
  • The number of prior field trips the American Battlefield Trust has funded for your school. Classrooms that received a grant in the 2022-2023 school year may not be eligible for a grant in the 2023-2024 school year.
  • The frequency of other approved field trips to a specific battlefield, museum, and other historic site destinations.
  • The certitude of teacher's plans.
  • Demonstrable positive impact on your students.
  • Battlefield-centric experiences.
  • Field trip destination(s).
  • Planned activities while on your field trip.
  • Availability of History Field Trip Grant Program funds.

Is the History Field Trip Grant Program meant only to send classes to battlefields?

No, we send classes to museums and other historic sites related to the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and the Civil War such as Independence Hall, Mount Vernon, the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, etc.

How long will it take to receive an answer to my application?

All applications will be reviewed and answered within two weeks of submission.

How much funding should I expect to receive from the American Battlefield Trust?

The History Field Trip Grant Program is designed to offset the costs for field trips. It is NOT designed to fully fund a field trip. Depending on a variety of factors, you may receive between $250 and $3,000 for your field trip.

What sites would the History Field Trip Grant Program help send my class too?

The History Field Trip Grant Program is designed to send students to battlefields, museums, and other historic sites related to the Civil War, War of 1812, and the Revolutionary War.

I want to take my class to see a historical movie, play, or musical; will the History Field Trip Grant Program cover this trip?

I want to take my class to a site associated with the World Wars; will the American Battlefield Trust fund this trip?

I want to take my class to a non-Civil War, War of 1812 or Revolutionary War site. Will you still provide funding?

No, the purpose of the fund is to send kids to sites related to those three conflicts.

Will you provide funding for a field trip to a Civil War, War of 1812, or Revolutionary War reenactment?

No. Due to insurance liability issues and the use of live firearms, we will not provide funding for trips to any reenactments.

Will the History Field Trip Grant Program pay for souvenirs, overnight hotel stays, luxury travel options, etc.?

No. The American Battlefield Trust reserves the right to withhold reimbursement for luxury items, souvenirs, overnight hotel stays, etc.

What will the History Field Trip Grant Program reimbursement cover?

The following items can be covered by the History Field Trip Grant Program: transportation, admission fees, and reasonable presenter/guide fees.

How long does it take to receive my reimbursement?

Reimbursement is dependent on each teacher. It is up to you to submit all of the necessary forms, receipts, thank you cards, etc. to the American Battlefield Trust. Once we have all of this information, in good order, it can take up to 28 business days for you to receive your reimbursement.

We are strapped for cash. Will the American Battlefield Trust provide me with funds prior to my field trip?

No. All funds will be dispersed AFTER the completion of your field trip, and the submission of all necessary forms, receipts, thank you cards, etc.

Who will the reimbursement check be made payable to?

All checks will be made payable to the school or school district. Under no circumstances will the American Battlefield Trust issue checks to individuals .

My class was approved for a field trip, but we cannot take the trip. Can I give my funding to another class?

No. Please contact the American Battlefield Trust in the case. We would be happy to work with you, but under no circumstances should you pass along your approval to another teacher, class, or school district.

We went on our field trip but did not visit any of the sites we were approved to go to by the American Battlefield Trust. Are we still eligible for reimbursement?

No. The American Battlefield Trust expects you to visit the sites that you provided on your History Field Trip Grant Program application, on the dates provided. If aspects of your trip change at any time, please contact the American Battlefield Trust Education Department as soon as possible. We are happy to work with you to make the trip a success.

Do you have more questions?

Email us  [email protected] .

Please Note:

Funding may be revoked by the American Battlefield Trust at any time for the following reason(s): post-approval trip date change, post-approval destination change, falsified receipts, excessive guide fees, class/teacher not fulfilling their required photo, press release, and thank you note requirements.

Field Trip Grants

Dive into the wealth of resources available to help make your school field trip dreams a reality with this list of field trip grants.

Field trips can be influential and inspirational, offering students transformational academic and cultural opportunities. However, like many extracurricular events, they can come with a big price tag. In an effort to seek creative funding for these trips, here are some resources around field trip grants to get you started. Remember to carefully read the requirements and guidelines for each grant to ensure that you are eligible and that your field trip fits within the parameters of the grant.

Foundational Grants for Schools

Foundations across the country offer support for educators, and new opportunities continue to arise year after year. There are also a wide variety of more localized grants specific to states or even cities that can help fund field trips, transportation, and project supplies. Check out these offerings below for some of the current field trip grants offered on a national scale.

  • The NEA Foundation Student Success Grants The NEA Foundation wants to support educators engaging students in project-based and deeper learning to support the development of skills and dispositions contributing to success and fulfillment in a changing world. Grants between $1,500 and $5,000 are available for a period of 12 months from the date of the award.
  • The Beacon and Verizon: Teacher Technology Grant These are field trip grants that will fund projects, allowing students to engage with educational content through the interactive learning experiences of Virtual Reality (VR) headsets. Two awards, each $1,000, will be made to provide VR sets for classrooms. Since 2020, virtual field trips continue to thrive and are enhanced with VR equipment.
  • Voya Unsung Heroes The Unsung Heroes program has helped thousands of K-12 educators fund innovative classroom and out-of-classroom projects such as field trips. To date, nearly $5 million in grant money has been awarded.
  • NASA Title 1 School Discount Program Title 1 Under this program, schools may request funding that subsidizes the price of a field trip ticket. The program provides for field trips to be priced at $5.95 per person, a savings of up to 76 percent off full-price admission. More details are available on their website.
  • Civil Air Patrol This includes two grant opportunities and resources for several different programs to bolster K-12 experiences related to flight and aerospace through the partnering Air Force Auxiliary.
  • The Road Scholarship Program Offered by the SYTA Youth Foundation, this grant helps to cover travel costs related to field trips and student learning. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, travel is being more heavily scrutinized to make sure methods are safe. Visit the website for information and to apply.
  • Sol Hirsch NWAF Education Fund Grants for K-12 Teachers/Educators This grant is intended for teachers, program directors, school district supervisors, and other individuals proposing to improve the education of K-12 students in meteorology through projects or field trip opportunities.
  • State Farm® Community Grants State Farm offers yearly grants that help educators who are committed to helping build safer, stronger, and better-educated communities. These grants can be put toward field trips and other out-of-classroom activities.
  • Toshiba America Foundation For those in the fields of science and math, Toshiba America grants help to support teacher-designed projects across a variety of grade levels.
  • Melinda Gray Ardia Environmental Foundation This grant program is ideal for educators looking to enhance their environmental curriculum, providing support for integrated field activities, classroom teaching and problem solving.
  • The Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grant Program On an annual basis, USDA awards competitive Farm to School grants that support planning, developing and implementing farm to school programs. USDA’s Farm to School grants are an important way to help state, regional, and local organizations as they initiate, expand and institutionalize farm to school efforts.
  • The Every Kid Outdoors Small Grants Program Selected schools and non-profits will receive up to $5,000 toward helping connect elementary school-aged youth to public parks, lands, and waters. This grant supports the Every Kid Outdoors initiative, with the goal to ensure every child in the U.S. has the opportunity to visit public lands and waters by the time they are 11 years old, thereby establishing a lifelong connection to enjoy and protect our American outdoor heritage.

Local and Community Grants for Schools

Many states and local corporations offer field trip funding and grants for local schools. Check with local businesses, non-profits, and community organizations to see if there are any grants available. This can also include places of interest such as museums, zoos, and cultural institutions. You can also branch out and check with associations that are relevant to your subject area, such as the National Science Teachers Association or the National Council for the Social Studies . In addition, be sure to check with your school’s PTA or similar organizations, as they often have fundraising efforts and may be able to provide field trip grants for students.

General and Corporate Grants for Field Trips

There are many websites that list grants available for field trips. One example is Grants.gov , which is a comprehensive database of federal grants. You can also try websites such as GrantsAlert.com , GetEdFunding.com , GrantWatch.com , DonorsChoor.org , or AdoptAClassroom.org , which will allow you to create a fundraising campaign for your classroom to put toward field trips. You can also search for grants on Google by using terms such as “field trip grants for students” or “education grants for field trips.” You can also look for corporate grants, as many large corporations such as Costco , Walmart , and Target provide grants to support education, including field trips.

Another more general funding source for field trips is to look for admission discounts or admission-specific programs for student groups. This may cover a portion or all the admission price and is a great way to help offset costs to attractions of interest.

National Free Days for Field Trips

Be sure to check out special offers for student groups as well as any “free days” happening near you. For local national parks, monuments, or museums, take advantage of National Parks Free Days to explore the great outdoors with students. And under the Every Kid Outdoors program, all fourth graders get a pass for free admission into national parks for the year. This includes family members of the student.

There are countless field trip grants and assistance programs available for educators, ranging from broad in scope to highly specialized. If you plan well in advance and spend a bit of time researching the opportunities that are available, it can reap great rewards for both you and your students. There’s still plenty of field trip ideas to read about in the Student Travel Planning Guide, along with information for faculty to help plan student travel.

Texas school bus with over 40 pre-K students struck by cement truck, killing 2, authorities say

BASTROP, Texas (AP) — A cement truck veered into a school bus carrying more than 40 pre-K students returning from a field trip to a Texas zoo Friday, killing a boy on the bus and a man in another vehicle, authorities said.

Officials said the bus rolled over on the highway in the rural outskirts of Austin, where a heavy presence of emergency vehicles shut down traffic for hours. The roof of the bus was crumpled, and much of another vehicle nearby was pulverized. Personal items were strewn across the road.

Four people in critical condition were airlifted from the crash site. Six others with potentially serious injuries were transported by ambulance, said Kevin Parker, division chief Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.

An ambulance bus transported about 10 other patients to a children’s hospital with minor injuries, Parker said. Passengers on the bus included 44 students and 11 adults, according to the Hays Consolidated Independent School District.

The child who died “was a precious young boy” who was a pre-K student at Tom Green Elementary School in Buda, according to Eric Wright, school district superintendent. The child’s name was not released.

Wright said in addition to the two people who died, 51 others were injured, including the bus driver.

“This is a horrible and tragic day for our school district,” Wright said.

The bus was struck at about 2 p.m. when the concrete truck, which was traveling in the opposite direction, veered into the bus’ lane, Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Deon Cockrell said. He added that authorities told him initial information indicated the truck hit the bus head-on, causing it to roll over.

The man who was killed was in a vehicle that either ran into the back of the bus or maybe part of the concrete truck, Cockrell said. There was one person in the truck and one man in the other vehicle. Cockrell didn’t know how fast the vehicles were going. He said the truck driver was cooperating with authorities.

Parents of the students on the bus were notified of the crash and all the children were reunited with their families by the evening, Wright said.

Cynthia Yescas said her 4-year-old nephew had been on the bus and that he was OK, but a little hurt,  the Austin American-Statesman reported .

“The kids are more scared than anything else,” she said.

The bus didn’t have seatbelts because it was a 2011 model, Tim Savoy, a Hays school district spokesperson, told the newspaper. New buses have been fitted with belts since 2017, he said.

Gov. Greg Abbott said in a post on the social media platform X that he spoke with the district superintendent “and offered the state’s full support as they help their community through this tragedy.”

State Rep. Erin Zwiener, whose district includes Buda, said in a post on Facebook that her heart goes out to the families affected.

“In this terrible moment, our community must come together to support those who’ve lost loved ones and those who are recovering,” she wrote, also thanking first responders and school district employees who she said “saved lives today.”

Buda is about 16 miles (25 kilometers) southwest of Austin.

Sights of Elektrostal: the history of the city, what to see, photos and reviews

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

Elektrostal is a fairly large industrial city, which is located near the Vokhonka River and almost 40-50 km from the eastern part of Moscow. There are a lot of powerful factories here, where many residents of Elektrostal work. They are perfectly combined with the most beautiful green boulevards, streets and parks, bright lawns and flower beds that adorn almost the entire town. It is picturesque due to amazing reservoirs and forests. It is worth learning more about the main attractions of Elektrostal, photos of which are in the article.

The city was founded in 1916 thanks to the construction of a metallurgical plant. Previously, this place was the natural boundary of Calm. To start construction, the labor of local peasants was used. In the middle of 1925 herebuilt the first railway line that connected Elektrostal with Moscow. After the onset of 1938, the village turned into a separate city.

It is noteworthy that during the Great Patriotic War, the Electrostal plants produced ammunition that was needed for victory. In particular, it is worth noting the production of the legendary Katyushas.

A new stage for the factories of the city began after the invention of atomic weapons. The local plant was on the list of the main production facilities of the nuclear industry. This led to the fact that in 1954 the production of fuel was launched, which was used for the operation of nuclear power plants.

In 1963, the cultural center "October" was built, and this was done by the masters of the Novo-Kramatorsky plant, named after Stalin. It featured a spacious auditorium that could seat more than 850 people, as well as a unique revolving stage for actors to change scenery in seconds.

At different times, eminent creative groups performed in this cultural center, as well as the Beryozka ensemble, famous at that time. It is noteworthy that even in our time the cultural center is actively functioning, and the square in front of it is considered the most beautiful place in Elektrostal with fountains operating in the summer. In mid-2013, it received the status of a city of labor and military glory.

There are many numerous monuments in the city that tell about the history of this amazing place: a monument to Nikolai Vtorov -the founder of the famous plant "Elektrostal" near the House of Culture, a monument to Tevosyan - the chief engineer, monuments to M. Gorky and K. Marx, a sculpture "Steelworker", a monument to Korneev - Hero of the Soviet Union, as well as a memorial and a monument to soldiers who died in Afghanistan and on North Caucasus.

This is a fairly large and old factory in the city that specializes in the production of fuel for local gas stations. The plant is part of the structure of the company FC "TVEL" of the state corporation "Rosatom". The General Director of the enterprise is O. L. Sedelnikov.

This plant produces nuclear fuel, which is used by many nuclear power plants, transport power plants and research reactors, not only in Russia, but also in other European countries. The company has quality certificates OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001.

The museum of the plant presents its history, shows old photographs of the streets of the city, there are achievements of workers, as well as photos of significant people, there are many of the most interesting models produced at the machine-building plant. It also stores presentations showing the principles of the enterprise.

This temple - a landmark of Elektrostal - is a single-dome centric church, which is made in the style of Byzantine times. It was erected in the 20th century, in the immediate vicinity of St. Andrew's Church. The temple was designed by T. V. Trubnikov and V. A. Drozdov, according to the developments of which the iconostasis and interior were exactly designed.

The church plays the role of a baptismal church and belongs to the Moscow diocese. The main shrines of the church are the most ancient and valuable icons of Nikandor Gorodnoyezersky and the Great Martyr Panteleimon. In addition, particles of the relics of saints are kept here. Divine services are held in the temple only during religious holidays.

the main attractions of the electric steel

The local park - a landmark of Elektrostal is an ideal place where everyone can stay alone with nature, ride numerous attractions, and also spend time playing slot machines. The park is especially popular in the summer - it is full of families, youth companies and couples in love.

Especially for the summer in 2013, the park was re-planned, which made it possible to accommodate more modern entertainment and interesting playgrounds for young visitors. Swimmers will love the dragon and swans, and trampolines have been installed for more active children.

It is noteworthy that the prices in the local park are quite affordable: the cost of a ticket for various attractions ranges from 30-100 rubles. Today it is called "Wonder Park", and it is divided into a quieter "Quiet Alley" and "Entertainment Alley", where there is an inexpensive cafe, a summer stage, and also quite a lot ofattractions.

sights of electrostal

This cinema is very popular, so it can be called a landmark of Elektrostal. It is located in the shopping center "Elgrad" and consists of 5 spacious halls that can accommodate more than 800 people. To show 2D and 3D films, only modern equipment is used: Dolby Digital Surround EX and MasterImage acoustics, as well as huge screens with a special coating. In all cinema halls, very comfortable conditions for visitors were created: climate control and soft chairs.

In the foyer of the Cinema Gallery there is a play area, a fairly spacious cafe, fast food establishments (Suneki, Tashir-pizza, Rostiks, Kebab-tun, etc.) and popcorn- bar. This is an attractive local leisure center, where the residents of Elektrostal are shown all the latest cinema.

This is a whole complex where you can spend your free time pleasantly and profitably. In addition to the playgrounds, which are fully equipped for playing laser tag and paintball, guests are invited to visit a local cafe where delicious home-cooked dishes are prepared, a banquet menu, karaoke, as well as a relaxing sauna with a warm font.

What do tourists who have visited the city say? It is not tourist, but industrial. Attractions are quite specific, but overall interesting. Tourists were pleased with low prices.

Looking at the photo of the sights of the city of Elektrostal, you may want to go there and spendunforgettable weekend.
