We’ll send you a confirmation email with your appointment date and time slot.  You’ll be sent a new hub, so keep it somewhere handy.

How long is the appointment?

The installation takes around three hours and the Openreach engineer will need access to your property. If you aren’t available, someone aged over 18 will need to be around.

Need to change your appointment?

Log into  order tracker  using your BT ID or order reference and postcode.

We’ll send you a text with your engineer’s name and mobile number. They will call you to confirm their arrival time and to find out about any access requirements.

visit openreach track

Activation:

The engineer first needs to turn on the cable that runs from the street cabinet to your property. During this time your phone won’t work for around 10 minutes, but the engineer will let you know in advance.

Connecting your hub:

The engineer will come into your home and disconnect your old hub, so you will briefly be without broadband.

They will fit a new faceplate on your primary socket, which is where the broadband cable comes into your house. When positioning your hub, the engineer may need to install new cabling. They will discuss this with you before starting any work.

Guide to Openreach Engineer Visits

Prior to the visit.

1. As part of an order we requested on-site contact details. These are an important contact for any engineer, not least if they are struggling to locate you. It’s imperative that this contact is on-site and that they can answer the phone straight away. Where engineers are directed to a switchboard or IVR (press 1 for…) they may not necessarily know who to turn to. As such only direct dial numbers or mobiles are recommended. If you believe the on-site details to be unsuitable tell us ASAP to amend them.

2.  Make as many people as possible aware of the visit, including reception . Far too many engineer visits are terminated because the engineer attends and those who greet them weren’t aware of the visit and who is looking after it. Don’t fall foul of this as abortive engineers will delay the installation / fault fix and incur additional charges.

3. If your building is difficult to locate, then make us aware of this. We can place additional notes for the visiting engineer to reference.

4. Keep an eye out for Openreach engineers and approach any engineers who seem lost. Your guidance may ensure that their visit isn’t aborted.

5. Make sure that parking is available. Your engineer will attend in a van, so making the process of locating a parking space will be appreciated.

6. Make sure you know where the phone line needs to be located. The engineer needs to be told this when they arrive.

7.  Clear any furniture that may obstruct the engineer completing their work.

8. Engineers have a limited time per install. Residential PSTN lines are restricted to 1 hour, whereas for business PSTN and ISDN lines they have 2 hours to complete the job as standard. If you can guesstimate that the time taken to reach the installation location line may involve more than 2 hours work (eg the length of the line is quite a distance, or walls need to be drilled) then make sure you tell us in advance. We can be sure to warn you of any potential additional costs, but more importantly we can authorise additional hours for the engineer to complete their work.

Whilst the Engineer is On-Site

1.  Don’t necessarily trust what they say.  Some engineers have a habit of telling you what you want to hear and can’t substantiate their claims. If in doubt, quiz them or call us whilst the engineer is on-site.

2. If an engineer claims to have completed work –  test it prior to allowing them to leave, don’t just take their word .

3. If you feel that the engineer is brushing you off, or you are unhappy with their responses, put them on the phone to us. We can have a technical conversation with them and we will persuade them to reconsider if necessary. Once they have left, there is nothing we can do to get them back, short of booking another engineer visit.

4.  Offer them a cup of tea . Keeping an engineer happy is sometimes a good way to ensure a professional service is delivered. Sadly there are some that want to complete their jobs as quickly as possible. Keeping them on-site longer can be a good way to ensure a full service is delivered correctly.

5. Ask questions. Do not be afraid to ask what they have done.

6.  NEVER leave them unsupervised .

7. Unhappy with their work and attitude? Ask them for their name, and note their vehicle registration number. We can reference this in any complaints that we raise and ensure that poor performances are referenced.

WEATHER ALERT

A rip current statement in effect for Coastal Broward and Coastal Miami Dade Regions

Here's why you might see a lot of records on the track and in the pools at the paris olympics.

ALBA – The purple pieces of vulcanized rubber track being produced at a factory in northern Italy will be run on by the world’s fastest athletes at the Paris Olympics . They have been made with one clear goal.

Recommended Videos

After three world records and 12 Olympic marks were set on the track in Tokyo three years ago, expect more records to fall at the Stade de France.

That’s why Mondo, the company that has provided the track at every Summer Games since Montreal in 1976, went back to the drawing board after Tokyo.

With the help of athlete feedback and extensive testing, new generation granules that are more elastic and cohesive are being used to produce the upper layer of rubber for the Paris track.

Multiple algorithms were explored before finding a more optimal shape and dimension for the air cells inside the track, which have been designed to minimize energy loss and enhance performance.

In other words, the innovations are meant to enable Olympians to run faster, jump higher and leap further. Kind of like the Olympic motto: “Faster, higher, stronger — together.”

“The athletes will find this track to be more reactive and better suited for their competition,” Maurizio Stroppiana, vice president of Mondo’s sport division, said during a press tour at the company’s factory in Alba, near Turin.

Produced in portions over two days this week and then rolled up for transport to France, the track will be installed at the Stade de France next week, weather permitting.

It will mark the third time that Mondo has installed a new track at the Stade de France, which hosted the athletics world championships in 2003.

“It’s laid on the asphalt base and it’s glued in place,” Stroppiana said. “It’s a fairly quick process. We’re going to work 24 hours and overnight because of the limited time available and the weather.”

Another novelty for Paris is the color of the track, which will be purple for the first time at an Olympics.

“The color was a courageous decision of the local organizing committee,” Stroppiana said. “We have never done this color before. It’s a light mauve and darker violet. It sort of recalls the landscape of France.”

REUSABLE POOLS

A three-hour drive across the country is the headquarters of another Italian company and supplier for big-time Olympic sports, Myrtha Pools.

Including training facilities, Myrtha is making 24 pools for swimming, diving, water polo and artistic swimming in Paris.

It's the sixth Olympics that Myrtha will be providing pools for.

For the swimming races at La Defense Arena, Myrtha is installing two temporary pools inside the rugby stadium — one for competition and one for warmups and training.

Stainless steel modules being produced at the Myrtha factory in Castiglione delle Stiviere near Verona will be transported to France and bolted together to form the pool walls and floors.

“(Building temporary pools) is a big advantage because this allows us to reinstall the pools after the event,” Myrtha CEO Roberto Colletto said.

For example, the pools used at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 — when six world records were set in swimming — were reused for the world championships in Fukuoka last year and reinstalled again at local schools in Japan.

Beyond the pool walls and floors, water treatment has added significance for Olympic pools.

“Transparency of water is very important because of the underwater (TV) cameras, especially now with the high definition, they need extreme transparency,” Colletto said.

“In order to achieve this we have developed a specific filtration and water treatment system. And we also have a variable speed bump system that will accelerate or reduce the speed of the water, depending on the competition mode or non-competition mode.”

There's also a new system designed to reduce the effects of chlorine in the water and the air that will be implemented for Paris.

So how much water does it take to fill an Olympic pool? Depending on the depth of the pools, which can range from two to three meters for swimming, between 2.5 and 4 million liters of water are needed.

“So there’s a lot of water," Colletto said, "that needs to be poured into these pools."

Dampf reported from Rome. Video producer Brian Hendrie contributed from Alba and Castiglione delle Stiviere.

When will my NOW Broadband line go live?

Congratulations. We heard you loud and clear, your NOW Broadband is on its way.

When you joined, you’ll have received confirmation of the dates your line starts working and when an engineer will visit, if needed.

Orders & appointments

Waiting for your line to go live?

Your NOW Broadband line can go live at any time up until midnight on your go live date.

Do I need an engineer visit?

You might not need an engineer visit if there's already an active phone line and socket at your address. In this case, we can usually switch the phone line remotely.

We'll let you know if you need an engineer visit when you sign up for NOW Broadband Membership, and give you a time and date.

Keep in mind Even if you have a phone socket in your home, you might still need an engineer visit to get your line up and running.

Need an engineer visit?

An Openreach engineer will install your new phone line. Openreach are responsible for the UK’s communications access network, including the physical phone line that we use to supply NOW Broadband.

The engineer will install one master phone socket at your address.

Can I reschedule my engineer visit?

If you’re not going to be home at the time given, get in touch  to reschedule an appointment that's right for you.

Keep in mind You’ll need to call us before 3.30pm on the working day before your original appointment if you want to reschedule.

Do I need to be home when my broadband goes live?

Already got a phone line .

We’ll switch your line remotely and you won’t need to be home. We’ll send you a text message confirming the date your broadband goes live.

Don’t have a phone line installed?

An engineer will need to visit your home to install your line. You'll need to be home on the date and time we gave you for an engineer visit when you signed up for your NOW Broadband Membership.

If this time doesn't work for you, just get in touch and we'll reschedule.

When can I start watching?

Did you add TV membership along with NOW Broadband Membership? You can start watching right away on a whole load of devices  – there’s no need to wait for your Hub to be delivered or for your NOW Broadband line to start working.

Can I keep my current phone number?

To move your current phone number to your NOW Broadband phone line, you'll need to let us know when you sign up for broadband membership.

Make sure you don't cancel your phone service with your current provider, so we can transfer your number across.

When will my NOW Broadband Hub arrive?

Your Hub will arrive a few days before your line is activated. It'll be delivered by Royal Mail, and we'll give you a link to track the delivery.

Keep in mind You'll need to wait until your line is activated before setting up your Hub.

Do I need to let my existing broadband provider know I'm joining NOW Broadband?

Switching from a cable broadband provider, like Virgin Media? To make sure you don't lose your broadband service, only cancel your cable broadband service after NOW Broadband is up and running.

If you're switching from a non-cable provider (like Sky, BT, EE or Plusnet) we'll work with your current provider to transfer your phone line. Your current broadband service will be cancelled automatically when your line is switched over to NOW Broadband, so you don’t need to do anything.

With iPhone, Openreach keeps the UK connected.

In the UK, Openreach connects millions of people and businesses to the internet. To manage 120 million miles of network cabling and create on‑demand customer service, Openreach supplied every engineer with an iPhone. The built-in features of iPhone combined with 40 custom apps optimized daily schedules, enhanced safety protocols, and streamlined workflows in the field. Additionally, Openreach provides the latest iPhone with flexible upgrade options from Apple Financial Services.

At a glance

iPhone has become the single most important thing that our engineers carry, with apps that support them throughout their day as they serve our customers.

Service. On the double. Custom apps and native features streamline workflows.

Workflow management.

When. Where. And how to get there.

With the My Jobs custom app, engineers can track all their appointments at a glance, get detailed job information, and view customer history and past repairs. And the app integrates with Maps, so engineers can plan their journey with just a tap. It’s customer service done right, from the moment the engineer arrives to the moment they drive away.

Detailed data. Authorization onsite.

Openreach maintains 120 million miles of fiber and copper wires. The amount of data required to keep track of all that infrastructure is enormous. Openreach created the Geopin custom app so engineers in the field can access infrastructure details from their exact location. With the Permissions custom app, customers approve work orders on an engineer’s iPhone, so work like digging and drilling can start right away. Together, these apps support every aspect of the engineer’s job — from planning to service to follow-up.

Connectivity

Router placement is spot-on..

Openreach customers want a flawless internet connection everywhere in the house. To improve Wi-Fi connectivity, engineers turn to SWAT, a custom app that lets them find the best place for network equipment. Customers can work, stream, or game without skipping a beat.

An app that elevates safety.

Before iPhone and the Pre-Climb custom app, engineers had to search multiple databases to confirm that poles were safe to climb. Now engineers get a real-time view of potential structural damage and other safety hazards within seconds.

Productivity

Built-in features for every job..

Engineers count on the built-in features and functionality of iPhone. Face ID lets them unlock their phone with a glance — an important safety benefit when they’re off the ground. Moreover, Face ID is incredibly secure, so customer data and confidential information is kept safe. FaceTime and 5G provide instant connection in the field for real-time support and quick problem-solving. And with all-day battery life, iPhone keeps going long after the workday is done.

Only with Apple

Iphone features.

iOS simplifies service for Openreach engineers. Face ID securely unlocks their device in the field. Long battery life powers their device throughout the day. And with Siri, engineers can multitask or initiate FaceTime with colleagues hands-free.

Custom Apps

Apple tools helped Openreach develop 40 custom apps. Schedules, customer information, and network data are all available at a tap for true efficiency.

Apple Financial Services

Apple Financial Services allows Openreach to keep its fleet up to date and retain the highest residual value. With the latest technology in their hands, engineers stay connected and productive.

Success, engineered.

Openreach keeps more than 25 million homes and businesses connected to the network they rely on.

Forty custom apps make work safer and keep service calls moving in the field.

iPhone technology has decreased wait times for customer projects and created faster, more accurate scheduling.

The intuitive features of iPhone boost employee satisfaction and help customers get online more quickly.

Apple Financial Services has enabled us to refresh twice the number of iPhone devices we normally would in a year. This means our engineers can use the latest technology so they can continue to deliver brilliant service to our customers.

We’re here to help you find the best, most cost‑effective solution for your business.

Hunter Biden declines invitation to impeachment hearing

Hunter Biden will not attend a public hearing related to House Republicans’ efforts to impeach his father, Joe Biden, his legal team said.

In a letter obtained by AP and Axios, Hunter Biden’s attorney Abbe Lowell informed the chair of the House oversight committee, James Comer, that his client will not accept the committee’s invitation for him to appear for the 20 March hearing. The letter reads:

Your latest step – this March 6 invitation – is not a serious oversight proceeding. It is your attempt to resuscitate your Conference’s moribund inquiry with a made-for-right-wing-media, circus act.

Calling the invitation “a Hail Mary pass”, Lowell said he thought even Comer would “recognize your baseless impeachment proceeding was dead.”

Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, in Washington, 28 February 2024.

Although no evidence has been produced, Republicans have accused Joe Biden and his family of personally profiting from his position while vice-president and have zeroed in on his son, Hunter, who had business ventures in Ukraine and China during that period.

TikTok says House bill is a 'ban'

TikTok has released a statement describing the bill passed in the House as a “ban” on the social media platform, which is used by 170 million users in the US.

The statement reads:

This process was secret and the bill was jammed through for one reason: It’s a ban. We are hopeful that the Senate will consider the facts, listen to their constituents, and realize the impact on the economy, seven million small businesses, and the 170 million Americans who use our service.

House speaker Mike Johnson has urged the Senate to pass the TikTok bill after it passed in a landslide vote in the House.

Johnson, in a statement posted to X, said China is “America’s largest geopolitical foe” and said apps like TikTok “allow the Chinese Communist Party to push harmful content to our youth and engage in malign activities.”

Communist China is America’s largest geopolitical foe and is using technology to actively undermine America’s economy and security. Apps like TikTok allow the Chinese Communist Party to push harmful content to our youth and engage in malign activities, such as harvesting the… — Speaker Mike Johnson (@SpeakerJohnson) March 13, 2024

Senate intelligence leaders express support for TikTok bill

Leaders of the Senate intelligence committee have issued a joint statement saying that they “look forward” to getting the TikTok bill passed through Senate and signed into law.

The statement by Senate select committee on intelligence chair Mark Warner and vice-chair Marco Rubio reads:

We are united in our concern about the national security threat posed by TikTok – a platform with enormous power to influence and divide Americans whose parent company ByteDance remains legally required to do the bidding of the Chinese Community Party. We were encouraged by today’s strong bipartisan vote in the House of Representatives, and look forward to working together to get this bill passed through the Senate and signed into law.

The vote in the House represents the most concrete threat to TikTok in an ongoing political battle over allegations the China-based company ByteDance could collect sensitive user data and politically censor content.

TikTok has repeatedly stated it has not and would not share US user data with the Chinese government.

Despite those arguments, TikTok faced an attempted ban by Donald Trump in 2020 and a state-level ban passed in Montana in 2023. Courts blocked both of those bans on grounds of first amendment violations, and Trump the ex-president has since reversed his stance, now opposing a ban on TikTok.

The treasury-led Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) in March 2023 demanded ByteDance sell their TikTok shares or face the possibility of the app being banned, Reuters reported, but no action has been taken.

The bill’s future is less certain in the Senate. Some Senate Democrats have publicly opposed the bill, citing freedom of speech concerns, and suggested measures that would address concerns of foreign influence across social media without targeting TikTok specifically.

Although the bill was written with TikTok in mind, it is possible other China-owned platforms could be impacted, including US operations of Tencent’s WeChat, which Trump also sought to ban in 2020.

House votes to force ByteDance to divest TikTok or face ban

The House has voted to pass a bill that would force TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to divest from the app or face a ban in the US.

The bill passed 352 to 65.

But the bill faces a more uncertain path in the senate, and the Senate majority leader, Chuck Schumer, has not yet committed to putting it on the floor.

The legislation would give ByteDance 165 days from the day it is enacted to divest from the social media app used by about 170 million Americans, or face a ban in US app stores and web hosting services.

House on track to pass TikTok bill

The House of Representatives has enough votes to pass a bill that would force TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to divest from the app or face a ban in the US.

The vote continues in the House, but it is on track to pass the chamber and by a wide margin.

Judge dismisses some charges against Trump in Georgia election case

The judge overseeing the Georgia election interference case against Donald Trump and his allies has thrown out some of the charges against the former president and several of his co-defendants, but many other counts in the indictment remain.

The Fulton County superior court judge Scott McAfee ruled that six of the counts in the 41-count indictment must be quashed, including three against Trump. But the order leaves intact other charges, and the judge wrote that prosecutors could seek a new indictment on the charges he dismissed.

Jim Himes, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said he voted no on the TikTok bill.

A statement by Himes reads:

As a ranking member of the intelligence committee I have more insight than most into the online threats posed by our adversaries. But one of the key differences between us and those adversaries is the fact that they shut down newspapers, broadcast stations, and social media platforms. We do not. We trust our citizens to be worthy of their democracy. We do not trust our government to decide what information they may or may not see.

He added that he believed there is a way to address the challenge posed by TikTok “that is consistent with our commitment to freedom of expression”,

But a bill quickly passed by one committee less than a week ago is not that way.

House votes on TikTok bill

Voting has started on the House’s bill.

Under fast-track rules, it requires support by two-thirds of House members for the measure to pass.

Openreach connects six million homes and businesses to full fibre

Openreach has now achieved a quarter of its overall target

Clive Selley

Openreach has now connected six million homes and businesses to its full fibre network, a milestone which means it has achieved a quarter of its national rollout target with five years to go.

The Openreach network is the largest in the UK and is used not just by parent company BT to deliver its services, but also by other broadband providers including Sky, TalkTalk, and Vodafone, and by mobile operators who require backhaul for their masts.

Earlier this year, Openreach increased its initial target of reaching 20 million premises by December 2026 by five million following a series of regulatory and government policy developments which it believes allows it to make a fair return on its investment.

Openreach fibre

These favourable regulations, increased demand, and lower costs mean BT no longer has any interest in a joint-venture with a third party. It says it is firmly on track to achieve its targets.

Openreach says its engineers are connecting 47,000 properties each week, laying an estimated 770 metres worth of cable every minute. This means a new connection is made every 13 seconds. The increased importance of connectivity following the pandemic is having a positive impact on adoption, with 1.3 million homes taking out a fibre product with an Openreach partner.

“We’re building Full Fibre faster, at lower cost and higher quality than anyone else in the UK and that is testimony to our engineers and build partners who are working flat-out to deliver this life-changing technology to rural, urban and suburban communities all over the country and we’re delighted to be fleshing out our plans with more details about where we’ll be building,” said Openreach CEO Clive Selley.

Openreach is one of several firms building full fibre infrastructure, including CityFibre and Virgin Media. The latter is currently the UK’s largest provider of gigabit broadband and has plans to connect its entire network to its fastest speeds before the end of the year.

What's next in Trump's Georgia election interference case after judge allows DA Fani Willis to stay on the case

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in Atlanta, Ga. on March 1, 2024.

A Georgia judge's ruling Friday declining to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from her election interference case against former President Donald Trump and his co-defendants on conflict of interest grounds could allow the prosecution to get back on track and quickly, but there are potential roadblocks.

One potential obstruction was removed Friday afternoon when Willis accepted the resignation of Nathan Wade , the special prosecutor she appointed to lead the case. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee had said in his ruling Friday that either Willis and her office or Wade had to leave the case after finding her romantic relationship with Wade resulted in an "appearance of impropriety."

Wade submitted his resignation later Friday and said he was resigning in part “to move this case forward as quickly as possible."

Had Willis agreed to recuse herself from the case, the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council would have to find another prosecutor with the resources to take on the sprawling and politically charged case — a process that would likely ensure that the case would not go to trial until next year at the earliest.

Can Trump appeal?

While Trump and his co-defendants in the case do not have the ability to appeal McAfee's decision not to disqualify Willis at this stage of the case, they could ask McAfee to approve a " certificate of immediate review ," which would essentially have the same effect.

Trump attorney Steve Sadow suggested in a statement Friday that he could seek such a review.

“While respecting the Court’s decision, we believe that the Court did not afford appropriate significance to the prosecutorial misconduct of Willis and Wade,” Sadow said. “We will use all legal options available as we continue to fight to end this case, which should never have been brought in the first place.”

The judge has shown an openness to sign off on such reviews before, and recently.

In a separate ruling earlier this week where he dismissed six of the charges against Trump and some of his co-defendants, McAfee said he would "likely grant" such a request if the DA's office decided it wanted to challenge his ruling.

But Amy Lee Copeland, a defense lawyer and former federal prosecutor in Georgia, said the judge's failure to include similar language in Friday's ruling could be a sign he does not view this decision the same way.

If the decision does undergo appellate review, it's unclear whether the case would proceed while that review is pending. Norm Eisen, who worked for House Democrats during Trump's first impeachment, said he did not believe a stay would be needed since the judge's ruling "made clear" that none of the allegations "goes to the evidence in this case" or to the "issue of any defendants' right to be tried or not."

Copeland said if the state Court of Appeals agrees to hear an immediate review, there could be a stay of the proceedings, but added that she doesn't believe the defendants will clear the necessary hurdles to get a review.

When will the trial take place?

McAfee has yet to set a trial date in the case. In November, the DA's office had asked for an August 5, 2024 trial . Sadow told the judge at a hearing in December that date would be the “most effective election interference in the history of the United States,” given that Trump was likely to be the Republican presidential nominee by then. (Trump became the presumptive nominee earlier this week.)

Trump's lawyers asked that the trial be scheduled for after the election and said that if he wins, it would need to take place after he serves his term in office.

Wade told the judge he didn't think an August trial in "any way impedes defendant Trump’s ability to campaign or do whatever he needs to do in order to seek office,” while also acknowledging it's expected to last at least four months — which would be past Election Day if it were to start in August.

The DA's office had argued the August date made sense because of the three other Trump criminal trials that were scheduled to take place earlier in 2024. All of those trial dates, however, are now up in the air.

Trump has pleaded not guilty in all four cases, which he maintains are part of a partisan "witch hunt."

Where do Trump's other trials stand?

A trial in Trump's federal election interference case, which had been scheduled for March 4, has been put on indefinite hold while the U.S. Supreme Court weighs Trump's presidential immunity claims.

Another trial in Florida on federal charges Trump mishandled and hid classified documents is still officially scheduled for May 20th, but the Trump-appointed judge overseeing that case has indicated she will push that date back .

The third case, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's case alleging Trump falsified business records in order to cover up hush money payments to an adult film star, was scheduled to go to trial on March 25, but that date was put off until at least next month.

Judge Juan Merchan agreed to the delay after federal prosecutors in New York belatedly turned over more than 100,000 pages of evidence related to the state's key witness in the case, Michael Cohen.

Eisen said the uncertainty around the other trial dates has created an opening for Willis to seek to go to trial before August. "They should request a fast trial," Eisen said. "They've said before they could be ready in 30 days," he added, and "now that we're past the sideshow," the "need is for speed."

Openreach deploys VIAVI automated testing solution across its Full Fibre broadband network

Scottsdale, Ariz., February 14, 2022 –   Openreach and Viavi Solutions Inc. (VIAVI) (NASDAQ: VIAV) today announced that they’re collaborating to automate testing the quality and speed of the Openreach “Full Fibre” broadband network using Fusion , a virtual performance monitoring system. Fusion will effectively deliver an on-demand network “speedometer”, showing near real-time views of the speeds that end users can achieve. This will be the first time that proactive network testing of end user speeds has been deployed in fibre access networks across the UK independent of the customer’s internet connection.

VIAVI Fusion incorporates both hardware and software, which will be used to rapidly isolate and troubleshoot faults on the network. Diagnostics will be automated for any issues as they’re raised by Openreach’s Communications Provider (CPs) customers.

In addition, customer service will be enhanced as contact center procedures will be automated, equipping operators with near real-time test results for rapid pass/fail interpretation. This allows further troubleshooting to be focused on the root cause, whether inside the Openreach network, or back with the CPs.

A key element of Fusion is its smart small form-factor pluggable (SFP) capability, enabling micro-probes plugged into thousands of nodes across the country. These probes enable automated throughput testing from all CPs ingress points to end-user premises, for millions of consumers. Now in its fourth generation of technology, VIAVI smart SFP technology supports 1G & 10G line rates across a variety of physical standards.

Trevor Linney, Network Technology Director at Openreach said: “As the country’s largest digital infrastructure provider, we recognise that service and broadband reliability has become more integral to everyday life especially when millions of people switched to working and schooling from home. Last year, we saw our broadband usage more than double with 50,000 Petabytes (PB) of data being consumed across the country.”

Linney continued: “We’re also seeing record numbers of people signing up to our ultrafast, ultra-reliable Full Fibre broadband with over 1.5 million customers taking up the service to-date. It’s therefore crucial that we continue to meet our already strong service performance by identifying and preventing faults before customers report them. The deployment of VIAVI’s automated testing solution is one part of the overarching technical innovative solutions we’ve adapted to help determine potential issues we detect on our network in near real-time or when a request comes through from our CP customers.”

Daniel Black, Director, UK & Nordics at VIAVI said: “Openreach plays such a foundational role in the UK’s digital economy that the improvements they make have a widespread, positive impact across the whole of the UK. The automation of testing across its network represents one such improvement. It will enable Openreach to be faster and more efficient with fault isolation, to the benefit of CPs, businesses and consumers. And they’ll be able to reduce the number of truck rolls and site visits they perform, as they’ll have access to better intelligence remotely. We’re proud to play our part in this network evolution and we appreciate our positive, ongoing relationship with Openreach.”

VIAVI has a longstanding relationship with Openreach and in March 2021, Openreach confirmed that it was using the VIAVI Optical Network Monitoring System ( ONMSi ) for remote testing of its network.

Openreach is on track to reach 25 million premises by December 2026 with current footprint of 6.5 million homes and businesses, including 2 million in rural areas across the UK.

Customers can check if the build has reached their area yet or what the latest plans are for their postcode at openreach.co.uk . Those who are able to order a Full Fibre service will need to contact their service provider to request an upgrade.

Openreach Limited is the UK’s digital network business.

We’re more than 37,000 people, working in every community to connect homes, schools, shops, banks, hospitals, libraries, mobile phone masts, broadcasters, governments and businesses – large and small – to the world.

Our mission is to build the best possible network, with the highest quality service, making sure that everyone in the UK can be connected.

We work on behalf of more than 665 communications providers like BT, SKY, TalkTalk, Vodafone, and Zen, and our broadband network is the biggest in the UK, passing more than 31.8 million premises.

Over the last decade we’ve invested more than £15 billion into our network and, at more than 190 million kilometres – it’s now long enough to wrap around the world 4,798 times.

Today we’re building an even faster, more reliable and future-proof broadband network which will be the UK’s digital platform for decades to come. We’re making progress towards our full fibre optic network target to reach 25 million premises by December 2026. Research shows a nationwide Full Fibre network could potentially provide a £59 billion boost to UK productivity.

To help build the new fibre network and deliver better service across the country – we’ve created and filled more than 9,000 apprenticeship roles in the last two years and we’re recruiting another 1,000 trainee roles in Openreach in 2021.

We’re also building greener – we operate the UK’s second largest commercial fleet and want to help lead the transition to electric vehicles, with a target to transition our fleet to being electric in 2030.

Openreach is a highly regulated, wholly owned, and independently governed unit of the BT Group. More than 90 per cent of our revenues come from services that are regulated by Ofcom and any company can access our products under equivalent prices, terms and conditions.

For the year ended 31 March 2021, we reported revenue of £5,244 million.

Openreach rolling out Full Fibre to 36 new locations as network reaches more than seven million homes

Installation engineer Becca prepares for work in East London

·        36 more rural and urban locations added to its build plan – covering 500k more premises

Openreach has now built ultra-fast, ultra-reliable Full Fibre broadband to more than seven million homes and businesses across the UK, including more than two million in the hardest to reach ‘final third’ of the country.

Having already built the new technology to more than a quarter of its target footprint, Openreach is on track to reach 25 million premises by December 2026 and it’s passing more than 50k new homes and businesses every week. To put that in perspective - engineers are installing around 800 metres of cable every minute.

Meanwhile, as part of its regular programme of build updates, the company has published plans to deliver the new gigabit-capable technology to 36 more locations across urban and rural Britain. Around half a million homes and businesses, including both rural and urban areas, have just been added to the plan in locations such as: Accrington, in Lancs; Boldon, in Tyne & Wear; Dudley, West Mids; Hornchurch, Gtr London; Kemptown, East Sussex; Manningham, West Yorks; and West Houghton, in Gtr Manchester, which means overall, more than 2,700 towns, cities, boroughs, villages and hamlets are now included in the company’s build programme.

More than 1.5m homes and businesses have already connected to the new network and demand continues to grow – with the company handling around 35k new orders every week.

Meanwhile 40 Communication Providers (CPs) including the likes of BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Vodafone, have signed up to Openreach’s long-term wholesale Full Fibre pricing offer (known as Equinox), launched in October last year. This will support CPs placing new orders on FTTP where available - helping to further drive Full Fibre adoption.

Openreach will also stop selling legacy analogue phone services and will give notice on a further 46 exchanges covering more than 380,000 premises where it’s building Full Fibre, to encourage the adoption of new digital services. Openreach is giving Communication Providers (CPs) 12 months notification that it’ll no longer be selling copper-based products/services in these exchanges. This brings the total number of locations – now notified for ‘stop sell’ to c.600 exchanges covering around five million premises.

Clive Selley, Openreach CEO, said: “Over a whopping seven million homes can now connect to our Full Fibre network which is a fantastic achievement. We’ve come a long way – it took eight years for us to pass our first million premises, but only four months to pass our latest million.

“We’re the UK’s leading network builder - going further and faster than all our competitors put together, and we’re still getting faster and building further every week, every quarter, and that’s important because it signals to the markets that we’re delivering what we promised. This is a life-changing technology and we’re delighted to be adding more towns and villages to our build programme today.

“We believe that full fibre is the future for the UK and that’s why we want to deliver full fibre broadband to 25 million UK homes and businesses by December 2026. The shift from copper to fibre will be every bit as significant as the move from analogue to digital and black and white tv to colour. By eventually retiring analogue phone lines, we will be creating a simplified network which allows us to meet the enhanced needs of an increasingly digital society.”

The first phase of the Full Fibre roll out will continue to 2026 – with full list of locations and timescales being updated regularly on the Openreach website . This short video explains what Full Fibre technology is, and to find out if you can order Full Fibre today or when it will be available in your area, you can  visit the Openreach Fibre Checker .
