Why we loved our Kimberley Cruise aboard True North...

"it is the special touches which impressed us...".

Quotemark open graphic

Show More We enjoyed daily tender excursions with knowledgeable guides and there were also helicopter tours offered if you wanted an ‘extra special’ experience. We took a 20-minute flight over Montgomery Reef which was just as spectacular from the air as it is from the water. Another couple we met on board celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary with the Eagle Falls Heli-picnic, which they said was amazing.

The ‘trip of a lifetime’ is how we all described our True North cruise. From the award-winning chef using the local produce and freshly caught Kimberley fish (usually a Barra or Spanish Mackerel)  for an exquisite dinner, the passionate staff whose enthusiasm for the Kimberley inspired all onboard, to that first glimpse of the King George Falls with a torrent of water gushing over the cliffs.

It is the special touches which impressed us and inspire so many to cruise on the True North for their Kimberley cruise..”

Fine Dining

Food is always a highlight on a North Star Cruise. Dining is a stylish but casual affair. Seating is not assigned. Modern Australian cuisine is featured.

Hors d’oeuvres in the ship’s lounge is a not to be missed daily event! Keep an eye out for succulent oysters (which you almost certainly helped to collect) and sashimi caught just hours before.

Signature dining includes freshly caught barramundi – a revered sport fish possibly caught with your very own hands, or perhaps aged Angus or delicate Wagyu beef, or exquisite Australian lamb!

Our ‘heli-picnics’ are an unforgettable way to enjoy the quintessential Aussie barbeque featuring a wide variety of seafood including freshly caught reef fish, local king prawns, squid, pearl meat and smoked salmon.

Fishing Aboard the True North

A guide just for you

A guide Just For You

If you’re looking for experienced and knowledgeable fishing instructors look no further than the guides aboard the True North. Regardless of whether you are a beginner or an ‘expert’, you will benefit from our ‘local’ knowledge ensuring unequalled opportunity from the remote Kimberley to untouched West Papua and the rarely fished islands of the Eyre Peninsula.

Variety is the spice

Variety is the Spice of Life

Our Seven Seas in Seven Seasons calendar presents an array of species to challenge fisherpersons of every calibre. You will be presented with convenient opportunity to do battle with some of the world’s most revered sports-fish. The iconic barramundi, the elusive mangrove jack, finger mark bream, golden snapper, jewfish, pink snapper, delectable whiting and even the mighty sailfish are all on the agenda!

On the water

On The Water

With six expedition vessels (not zodiacs) accompanying the True North, guests have greater opportunity to do “what they want, when they want.” The luxury of so many dedicated expedition boats means that we can always allocate craft to different fishing styles and to varying degrees of experience. Fish in comfort and receive the individual attention that the True North is famous for.

In the air

The ship’s helicopter also adds unique dimension to fishing on the True North. Heli-fishing is one of our most popular activities – fly over stunning wilderness in air-conditioned comfort to an otherwise inaccessible location! Who could pass up the opportunity to fish where perhaps no one has fished before?

Nothing but the best

Nothing But The Best

The True North carries a full complement of high quality fishing equipment on all cruises. Rods, reels and hand lines are provided for your complimentary convenience however keen anglers are welcome to bring their own gear (6-8kg bait casting outfits are recommended). Lures are available on a replace if you lose basis.

Catch of the day

Catch Of The Day

Our chef’s love to be a part of the fishing action – when the ‘hunters and gathers’ return to their home away from home, the chefs will delight in preparing a lunch or dinner that truly reaps the rewards of your efforts! Our chefs particularly enjoy mud crabbing – not only will they show you how to prepare unforgettable fare; they will also be right by your side when you battle these cantankerous adversaries!

Everyone is invited

Everyone Is Invited

Who can, you can! From the “never fished” to the “I’ve caught ‘em all”, our guides encourage all onboard to join in the action and multiple expedition boats always allow opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of fishing styles in small groups of equal ability!

Ladies, fishing isn’t just for the men, in fact, on the True North it may just be the other way around! Things might start a little slowly but in our experience, once that first fish is in the esky – there’s no stopping the fairer sex! You may just surprise yourself – one of our most common guest comments is “I’ve never given fishing a thought – now I can’t get enough!”

We'll be back

We’ll Be Back

Everyone on the True North is conscious of the fact that fishing in a wilderness area is a privilege. The True North is fully licensed for fishing and fishing regulations are strictly observed.

We never take more than a ‘taste’ and fishing operations are always conducted with the utmost care and respect. Wherever possible we practice ‘catch & release’ techniques and, we never permit any activity that might degrade fish habitat.

True North’s Helicopter

Adding yet another dimension to adventure, most cruise options on the TRUE NORTH also feature an onboard helicopter!

Carrying guests in air conditioned comfort, the ship’s helicopter provides unique opportunity to witness grandeur; unique opportunity to fish billabongs that have never been fished; unique opportunity to discover your very own wilderness! Now it’s not uncommon for our guests to embark with some uncertainty about flying in a helicopter – however it’s always a different story when the time comes for disembarkation.

The ship’s helicopter helps you to climb mountains and volcanoes in air conditioned comfort. Even if you are not as spritely as you once were – the helicopter will deliver you without fuss to even the most inaccessible locations.

See ancient rock art without leaving your seat. Glide over impenetrable jungle and swoop on historic and cultural highlights. Take someone special on a sunrise flight or join the entire guest compliment for an unforgettable heli-picnic.

The ship’s helicopter – another TRUE NORTH icon!

True North is a great way to experience the Kimberley coast.

The Kimberley coastline is truly one of the world’s last great wilderness areas, ready to explore secluded beaches and river inlets – waters famous for an abundance of wildlife.

Experience wilderness in surroundings with a blend of adventure and luxury on board True North, discover spectacular waterfalls and awe inspiring gorges, ancient cultural history and indigenous rock art.

Multiple expedition boats provide True North guests with greater opportunity to do “what they want, when they want” and, to add yet another dimension to adventure, most cruise options feature an on board helicopter!

On board features include:

A number of lavish vantage points including a sundeck, a forward observation lounge, a ship’s lounge and an indoor/outdoor bar; 2 huge plasma screens in the lounge; an internet café; the latest in computer controlled motion stabilizers; lower deck dining room with large panoramic windows ensuring that passengers never miss any of the action, even when they are enjoying the ‘finest in fine dining’.

Exploring the ancient landscape of the Kimberley by boat cruise is an unforgettable experience. Sailing the coastline, rivers and gorges opens tourists to a world of unexpected beauty and charm, and True North Luxury Cruises is the perfect yachting company to provide this. No other tour option matches the grand elegance and sheer comfort of True North.

For more than 25 years, this reliable cruise company has been sailing the waters of the Kimberley, catering for many thousands of tourists annually. The yacht itself stands at about 50 metres in length, and can accommodate up to 36 passengers at any one time. There are 18 staterooms which come in three different styles – ocean class, river class and the pricier explorer class. All rooms boast ensuites, viewing windows, and state-of-the-art amenities. Furthermore, 18 crew members make sure that guests are always well looked after.

The yacht has various amenities that provide comfort and elegance for guests. A sundeck, observation lounge and a ship lounge offer beautiful views of the Kimberley. An internet café is available, and the on-board dining is nothing short of five-star. The dining area is situated on the lower deck, although passengers still get to experience million-dollar views whenever they are dining.

There are several Kimberley cruises offered by True North. Each of the packages extend for seven days or more, taking visitors to some of the region’s most impressive locations, such as the Horizontal Falls, King George Falls and Montgomery Falls. The yacht can take visitors almost beneath waterfalls, and the on-board helicopter provides even greater chances for a unique sightseeing adventure. The tours leave from Broome, and travel along the coastline to the northeastern town of Wyndham.

The day begins passing Koolan and Cockatoo Island as you enjoy breakfast with new friends. From here you'll be introduced to your first Kimberley icon, the Horizontal Falls. Experience the awesome power of the region’s huge tidal range in an exhilarating tender ride and then climb aboard your air-conditioned helicopter for a view of the falls that very few experience. Later on, venture out for a walk along white sand Silica Beach, before setting sail for Doubtful Bay as the day draws to a close.

Included: B - L - D

True north horizontal falls heli

A different but equally magical day awaits with True North cruising the Sale River and guests enjoying their first chance to catch a 'barra' in the tender boats. After lunch you'll arrive at the impressive Montgomery Reef. The reef is a unique eco-system that must be seen to be believed with its 140 square miles of coral reef rising out of the ocean with the ebb and flow of the tide. Water cascades from the reef as the tide falls exposing a glimpse of the world beneath the glassy surface. Turtles, dugong, manta rays and other marine life call this special ecosystem home. Helicopter and tender boat adventures are options today or just take in the views of the reef from the deck with a wine in hand.

Day6 True North Kimberley Montgomery Reef

The scenery will capture you today as you cruise along the Prince Regent River before pulling up at the base of the King Cascades waterfall. View the falls as they rain down from above, and later explore by tender boat and on foot with the chance to hike to a swimming hole. The helicopter is another option to experience the pristine Prince Regent National Park by air.

Day5 True North Kimberley King Cascade

A day of choice, whether it be joining an early morning fishing expedition, or one of the adventure boats with the ship’s naturalist, or seeing some rock art – and all before another helicopter flight to a remote spot that you’ll never forget; land alongside a crystal clear billabong for a picnic lunch.

Day4 TRUE NORTH Tender Vessels

Journey along the magnificent Hunter River today, a river system lined with red cliffs and rainforest beyond. The Hunter is about as far away from civilisation as you can get in Australia, and the area is known for its large crocodile population and mud-crabs nesting in the dense mangroves. Activities today include fishing, bird-watching, mud-crabbing and simply exploring where few have been before. Join one of the expedition boats for a closer look, and we highly recommend the hike to Jackson Falls.

True North Kimberley Hunter River

Wake up to views over the turquoise waters of Swift Bay and an early breakfast before a search for the black-lip oyster. Savour their unique taste direct from the rock before heading to some Wandjina galleries nearby. Keep watch over the waters to spot some light game species that inhabit this area such as queenfish, giant trevally and mackerel. Next is a unique opportunity to sip a glass of sparkling trying on exquisite pieces of diamond and pearl jewellery, created by the artistes at Allure, Jewels of the Kimberley and Kimberley Fine Diamonds.

True North The Kimberley Indigenous Rock Art

The Mitchell River is the destination of the day, where the adventure boats head up to the scenic Surveyors Creek – a great place for a swim. We'll join the fishermen to hunt for the elusive barramundi and there will be more opportunities for helicopter flights over ancient land including the spectacular Mitchell Falls. Join the crew for cocktail hour before experiencing another unique dining experience.

True North Kimberley Fishing 1

Take up the opportunity to visit the ‘Bradshaws’ ancient rock art site featuring some of the oldest paintings known to man. Opt for the heli-picnic at Eagle Falls for aerial views and destination lunch alongside a picture-perfect waterfall in the middle of remote far-north of Western Australia. The tenders will be busy exploring local beaches and rivers before all the guests convene to share tales over drinks on the deck. Set sail this evening for Koolama Bay.

Day3 True North eagle falls

On your last full day you will encounter one of the Kimberley's must-see attractions, the mighty King George River and Twin Falls. Here you'll anchor at the base of King George Twin Falls and find endless places to explore. Climb the gorge walls or take the helicopter to the top of the falls for a cruise highlight. A walk at Tranquil Bay is also an option this afternoon. Enjoy sunset drinks and dinner as the stars light up the Kimberley night sky.

Why we loved our Luxury Kimberley Cruise on True North...

"it is the special touches which impressed us...".

Quote mark open

True North Cruises

  • Main Information

One of the world’s finest adventure cruises, the True North offers outstanding comfort and uninterrupted vistas as it plies the dramatic coastline of Australia. Renowned as one of Australia’s most outstanding and revered adventure tourism experiences, the True North is an ‘adventure platform’ purpose-built to access areas larger ships cannot, encouraging guests to get off the ship itself and out to explore some of the most remote and inaccessible coastal regions in the country. The True North and True North II vessels function as floating boutique hotels, catering to just a few exclusive guests. Stylish décor, comfortable cabins with ensuite facilities, in-house entertainment, satellite telephones and talented on-board chefs offer a five-star hotel experience. While best known for its flagship Kimberley adventure cruises, True North’s considered design and outstanding beauty is perfectly adaptable to all kinds of waters. The True North also explores Western Australia’s entire coastline stretching from Ningaloo to Albany with dedicated itineraries to the Rowley Shoals, Montebello Islands, and more; South Australia’s rugged and seafood-rich Eyre Peninsula; Sydney Harbour and the Great Barrier Reef during the End of Year holiday season; and to international waters in Indonesia, West Papua, and Papua New Guinea. Authentic, luxurious and uncontrived, True North delivers you to the heart of the wilderness with its considered design, fleet of adventure boats and accompanying ship helicopter, allowing guests to explore different regions and activities ranging from scenic walks, cultural excursions, fishing, diving, and snorkelling, picnics and beyond in Australia’s most inaccessible and breathtaking natural areas.

Each ship operates with their own fleet of dedicated adventure boats – 20’ runabouts providing ample seating and flexibility to both stand-up and walk around when not in motion, providing comfort, practicality and safety while exploring remote waters with activities such as photography, fishing, snorkelling, and diving.

Wild Luxury: Boarding True North in The Kimberley

I 'm sipping steaming coffee in the soft unfurling of the day's first rays, barefoot and tousle-haired on the bow of the True North II . We're slicing across the pure, mirrored surface of an endless blue, diamonds of dancing light chasing us on the water as we disappear between majestic ridges of glowing Kimberley rock into this vast and true wilderness.

If there's such a thing as peak Australia, it might lie here, within this 1.8 billion-year-old landscape: this rugged testament to the massive, ancient collision and rearrangement of rock, the groaning grandeur of giant building blocks locked at improbable angles along the coastline a reminder of the massive tectonic power that lies beneath us all.

This wild place, full of wild things: deadly saltwater crocs, mesmeric manta rays, sharks, turtles, bottlenose and snubfin dolphins, dugongs, Spanish mackerel, barramundi; around a third of all our bird species, including red-headed honeyeater, osprey, azure kingfisher, white-bellied sea eagle.

This almost inconceivable vastness: roughly the size of Germany, with its scarcity of humans (under 40,000), and its arching history – at least 40,000 years – of Indigenous habitation and protection of the land, documented in countless galleries of ancient Gwion Gwion and Wandjina rock art.

This startling oceanography: the heart-thumping, force-field immensity of its tidal range – more than 11 metres – causing life-filled shelves of reef to rise from ocean, waterfalls to run sideways, jaws to hit the floor. Everything here is governed by these monster tides, including our small group's movements for the next four days.

Could there be a truer testament to the devastating natural beauty of our time-worn, hard-loved land than the Kimberley coastline? And could there be a better way to see it than in the hands of True North Adventure Cruises? First breathed into being by pioneering adventurer (and 2016 OAM recipient) Craig Howson in 1987, True North today offers an innately Australian sense of luxury: barefoot (literally: no shoes on the boat), laidback, with activities tailored to your preferences but geared towards a communal sense of thrilling discovery.

True North and True North II are "adventure-platforms," according to the literature, "vehicles designed to deliver our guests into the very heart of wilderness". The guest-to-staff ratio is high (14 crew to a maximum of 22 passengers on the more intimately sized True North II ); the young, fun crew dart about like minnows, refilling glasses, tidying rooms. They're quick studies in each guest's personality and preferences: social butterfly or introvert; chardonnay or cab sauv; fishing tragic or sunset-chaser.

My room, Ord, nestles a queen-sized bed against the porthole window, with desk, ample storage space and small ensuite. At seven square metres, it's comfy and cosy – bigger rooms on board are 12 square metres, and rooms on True North are up to 18 square metres – the more compact nature allowing for lower pricing than True North .

But this is all really about a different sense of luxury: rarefied, insightful access to places others can't reach. Purpose-built for adventure cruising in the Kimberley, an on-board helicopter and adventure boats broaden both ships' horizons even further. Too many bells and whistles tempting us to stay onboard would feel disingenuous, I think, gazing into the beckoning blue.

The previous afternoon, we'd boarded True North II from Broome's Cable Beach. Tanned crew extended steady hands, followed by glasses of bubbly and canapés as we commenced our overnight steam around Cape Leveque towards the 800-plus islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago (the Kimberley boasts more than 2600 islands), and partly into Dambimangari Country. We're a varied bunch – some sailing solo, mostly couples, a gaggle of adventurous girlfriends – getting to know each other around the communal dining table over a "surf and turf" dinner of blushing eye fillet, prawns and herbed butter (preferences and dietaries are tailored to).

The next few days will offer a beautifully framed glimpse of this unimaginably massive landscape. I've never felt smaller, in the best possible way; a mere nanosecond in a yawning universe. The water here hides dangers dizzying in multitude and scope. It goes from glassy calm to potential disaster within minutes. Apparently, the crocs sometimes snake along under the shade of a boat. Do not, do not put your hands in the water, or even over the side, our guides tell us, repeatedly.

"You'll probably get the feeling that we're full of it," says genial on-board naturalist Tim. This time of year (October) he explains, "you tend not to see them sunning themselves on the banks" as much. But they're here (and we do see them). And of all the croc species worldwide, the saltie – which grows up to six metres – is the largest and most aggressive. "Go Australia," Tim intones, drily. We all laugh. Nervously.

It's hard, at first, to put these warnings out of mind when offered a refreshing dip in a freshwater waterhole our first morning, gliding across Dugong Bay before clambering up sun-beaten rocks to a scenic, carefully chosen swimming spot. Some climb ledges to plunge like fishing lures into the water. Others, like me, edge in: pause, edge again, before surrendering to the delicious, cooling deep.

Back on deck, a lunch of Sichuan-spiced confit duck leg slides obligingly off the bone, crowning a coconutty Indonesian urap sayur salad. Wines span Margaret River to Italy, with some reserve bottles on offer alongside Champagnes. Afternoon canapés may involve crab and fennel tartare on homemade crackers, topped with avocado mousse (perfect with a Kimberley Rose cocktail). Breakfasts range from chilli scrambled eggs to Broome mango pancakes; lunch is often a refreshing salad, substantial enough for adventure-stoked appetites. Dinners include beef ragù with tagliatelle, and sticky pork belly with Asian salad and coconut rice; all served with a hearty side of good-natured banter.

My first chopper ride takes in Talbot Bay and the Horizontal Waterfalls; an epic taste of the sheer, breathless scope afforded us on this trip. The dangers below fade into a milky oceanic palette: swirling swathes of ocean, blooming clouds of churning sand, brushstroke blobs of green mangroves. We approach the waterfalls: two narrow channels between soaring ridges of stratified rock, ending in gnarled giants' knuckles pressing down into the blue. The tidal waters force their way through the gaps, spitting toothpaste-like torrents. Later we board tenders to get a closer look, the churning water tracing whirlpools and smacking foamy kisses against the sides of our boat.

The quieter waters of Talbot Bay bring reflection; tree-dotted ridges undulating in rhythmic waves, saturated afternoon sun flickering like a silent movie reel. The countless layers of rock resemble pages in a thick book, dropped in the swimming pool, all crumpled and re-set; part of a story older than we can begin to fathom.

Next morning at Montgomery Reef reveals sky smudged with sea, the air and water soft and pastel-hued. Squinting, I see the massive, ancient reef seemingly rising from the ocean as colossal amounts of seawater drain off the reef with the pull of the tide.

We soar above in the chopper, struck silent by the discombobulating beauty of it all. A cerulean channel cuts a swathe between ridges of reef like an enormous, flowing spine, the reef as lungs, tiny inlets like bronchiole feeding the larger veins of life-filled water. Then it's our turn at sea level, water like white lava flowing furiously towards us, the spray splashing my face. Turtles breaststroke by; a sea snake pokes its head up like a periscope.

We board the chopper again, soaring Bond-like through riverine channels before landing at a picturesque spot along the Sale River, where a freshwater pool beckons and trees burst from seemingly solid rock. Later, during sundowners atop a rugged cliff overlooking monolithic islands, one of our group heralds it as the best day of his life: "I'm still processing it all," he says, eyes glistening. He quietly takes a solo perch, contemplating the campfire-coloured sun's descent; none of us are immune to the magic of the moment.

The highlight of our last day comes at Silica Beach, where powdery white sand crunches like snow underfoot. The crew arrange a pop-up bar on the beach; others moor along the rocks and water, on vigilant croc-watch. We wade in, faces upturned; mooch happily in that impossibly jewel-coloured water, marvelling at our luck. There are no roads to this beach, no other visitors; no bars except the one the crew conjures and dismantles, leaving no trace; like we were never even here at all.

Has anyone ever purchased the Moscow excursion on the 2 day Saint Petersburg port of call. Would love to see if anyone thought it was worth it. I would really like to do it.

I suggest you spend the two days in St Petersburg rather than taking the tour to Moscow. There is so much to see in St Petersburg that two days are hardly enough. It is a very long drive to Moscow and you would not have much time in the city - not enough to see even the highlights.

  • Stalin skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya (Tinkers) embankment;
  • The Kremlin;
  • “House on the Embankment” Stalin skyscraper;
  • Monument to Peter I;
  • The Central House of Artists;
  • Christ the Savior Cathedral;
  • Gorky Park;
  • Moscow State University;
  • Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Luzhniki stadium;
  • Novodevichy Monastery;
  • Kiev railway station;
  • Europe Square;
  • Moscow City Hall;
  • Government House;
  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
