10 best road trip movies from the 2020s on prime video (ranked by imdb).

From the Academy Award-winning movie Nomadland to lesser-known movies such as She's in Portland, these movies are available to watch on Prime now.

Don’t Make Me Go  was recently released on Prime Video and is about a father-daughter road trip after Max, the father, learns he has a terminal illness. Max decides not to tell his daughter, Wally, the real reason why they're making this trip, and it's from this withholding of information that the true melodrama starts.

Don't Make Me Go is a classic road trip-style movie where the journey is far more important than the destination, and the growth the characters find within themselves is the true point of the movie. Even with the 2020s in their early years, there has already been a fair number of "road trip movies" that examine these exact topics.

She's In Portland (2020) 5.7

Two Men in a Jeep Smiling in the Movie She's In Portland

She's in Portland is a movie about two old friends who, envying each other's lives, take a road trip to find "the one that got away." Through the course of their road trip, the two men bond and rekindle their friendship that doesn't rely on machismo for the two men to be taken seriously.

She's in Portland is a movie about two men's friendship that is not typically seen on screen. Many movies with two male leads rely on stunts and heavy action, whereas  She's in Portland relies on the two men's budding friendship and the lessons they learn along the way. Taking place along the Pacific Coast Highway, viewers will be stunned by the gorgeous views the pair stop at along the way.

Stop And Go (2021) 5.9

Whitney Call Mallory Everton Stop and Go

In this hilarious comedy, two sisters take a cross-country trip to rescue their grandma from a Covid outbreak at her nursing home. This movie was created during the Coronavirus pandemic and very much showcases the fear that many people had in interacting with others during this time.

Despite their circumstances, the sisters find humor in their situation that doesn't quite land with all viewers. It's true that while the entire human race went through the pandemic, it doesn't necessarily mean it can be joked about with much success. Despite this, the film certainly has its moments of whimsy and is a great movie to while the time away with.

Unpregnant (2020) 6.4

Veronica and Bailey talking in a diner in unpregnant

Apropos of the time,  Unpregnant  is about two teenage girls, Bailey (Barbie Ferreira) and Veronica (Haley Lu Richardson) who embark on a harrowing and emotional, yet hilarious journey to another state to be able to obtain an abortion without requiring parental permission. Along the way, they are accosted by pro-lifers and policemen and get a ride from an anti-government survivalist.

While this movie deals with heavy topics, it's done so with comedic timing and heart and doesn't skirt around the reality of Veronica's situation. The film is a great true road trip style movie with many obstacles thrown their way, as is typical of the genre. It very much gives  Booksmart and even  Superbad vibes in a way that makes a difficult situation funny.

The Man In The Hat (2020) 6.4

Ciaran Hinds in the Man in the Hat

The Man in the Hat  is a beautifully cinematic film that has almost no dialogue, as the speaking is done through music. It's a classic road trip movie that, in the words of Ciarán Hinds , who plays the main character, "won't take too much of your time... you can just be a human being and watch this little journey and feel things."

The Man in the Hat is beautifully orchestrated with music instead of prose, simple yet emotional scenes like a man eating olives out of a jar that'll have viewers reaching for the Kleenex and the small moments that make humans, human. It's the type of movie that is simply experienced rather than relying on stunts or heavy action to make it memorable. It just is.

Dog (2022) 6.5

Channing Tatum and Lulu the dog sitting by a car

Starring Channing Tatum as Briggs,  Dog is about an Army Ranger who suffers from PTSD and isn't eligible for service. To get on his commanding officer's good side, he agrees to take an aggressive dog, Lulu, to his late partner's funeral. Through their hilarious and sometimes scary interactions, Briggs and Lulu learn more than they ever thought they could have from each other.

The film is inspired by true events that Tatum experienced with his own dog. Viewers have become weary of movies with dogs as it seems that they are destined for a bitter end, however, the marketing for  Dog assured viewers that the dog does not indeed die, which made viewers keener to watch.

The Trip To Greece (2020) 6.6

Steve and rob sitting at a table with comedy/tragedy masks

The Trip to Greece is a comedy film following fictionalized versions of two actors, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, as they traverse the steps of Odysseus from Troy to Ithaca. It's the fourth installment in the franchise, following  The Trip  to Italy,  The Trip to Spain,  and the original iteration centered in England.

Along with the  hilarious banter between Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, viewers are dazzled with gorgeous shots of the delectable food the pair dine on throughout their journey. The movie released at the start of the 2020 pandemic and was an outlet for people to "travel" without actually leaving their homes.

Supernova (2020) 6.8

Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci in Supernova

Starring Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci,  Supernova  is about Sam ( Firth, in arguably one of his best movies of all time ) and Tusker (Tucci) embarking on a road trip through the English countryside after Tusker has been diagnosed with early-onset dementia. Similar to  Still Alice , this movie explores the grief, heartache, and denial of losing a loved one before they're even gone.

Though the film was ultimately snubbed by the awards circuit, it shows an achingly accurate portrayal of dementia and the trials and tribulations the couple face through their hardships. The two leads give a performance of a lifetime that will leave viewers remembering their characters more than the specifics of the film.

Hit The Road (2021) 7.3

boy in hit the road cheering outside car sunroof

Hit the Road is an Iranian comedy/drama about a family driving to the Turkish border to smuggle their eldest son out of the country. Despite the often comedic moments of the movie, there is a constant note of fear running through everyone in the film but the young boy, who hasn't been told the truth about why his older brother is leaving Iran.

Hit the Road was met with critical acclaim and was director Panah Panahi's debut film. The film is shot almost exclusively from the inside of the car and uses humor as a way to keep the family from falling too far into anguish and heartbreak, though it is there just below the surface.

Nomadland (2020) 7.3

Nomadland Frances McDormand

After being a smash success on the film festival circuit,  Nomadland  went on to win Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress (Frances McDormand) at the Academy Awards. Based on a non-fiction book, Fern (McDormand),  recently widowed and unemployed, sets off in a newly acquired van around the U.S. to live as a nomad.

Throughout her travels, she meets fellow nomads who teach her valuable lessons about living on the road as well as invaluable lessons about life, death, love, and family.  Nomadland is meant to show what real American life can look like without glamorizing it the way Hollywood has been known to do.

C'mon C'mon (2021) 7.4

Joaquin Phoenix in C'mon C'mon

In this heartwarming and earnest film, Joaquin Phoenix impresses as an uncle who forges a bond with his young nephew, Jesse, who he hasn't seen in over a year. When Jesse's mom asks Johnny (Phoenix) to come and stay with Jesse, and when she needs to extend her trip, Johnny and Jesse start a cross-country road trip together.

Shot completely in black and white, this movie is not about the end goal, but about the journey, and the lessons Johnny and Jesse learn along the way. Viewed through the eyes of a child, and through the eyes of an adult, it asks viewers to reflect on the circumstances in their own life and if it's possible to move on.

Along their journey – which includes Joyce calling Andy’s ex-girlfriend and a steak-eating contest – Andy realizes that he has more in common with his aggravating mother than he thought.

They begin to enjoy their time together until Joyce learns why Andy actually invited her.

Deceit is a common theme for familial movies on road trips – and the outcome can go one of two ways.

Come as You Are Movie Poster with four guys in a camper van and woman in black dress showing legs on top

Come as You Are (2019)

Three disabled men, Scotty, Matt, and Mo, take a road trip from Colorado to Montreal to lose their virginities at a brothel servicing special needs clients.

They are accompanied by a jaded travel nurse who drives and assists them.

This isn’t another comical, sex-motivated road trip, though. The film delicately presents the needs of the disabled community and offers us an opportunity to be empathetic and compassionate.

The one caveat of this inclusive road trip film is that all three main actors are able-bodied themselves.

Come As You Are is a remake of the acclaimed Belgian film, Hasta la Vista , which is based on the real-life of Asta Philpot.

The Trip to Spain Movie Poster with two white men at table with food and one pouring wine into a glass

6.  Easy Rider (1969)

road trip movie amazon prime

I hadn’t heard of the film until two days ago when I concocted the idea to do an article on road-trip movies. I found this during my research and instantly, the film became one of my favorites. Starring the ever-green Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper and newcomer Peter Fonda, the film  explores the societal landscape, issues, and tensions in the United States during the 1960s, such as the rise and fall of the hippie  movement, drug use, and communal lifestyle. Extra-ordinarily, the film administered use of real drugs in all the scenes including them. The aesthetic vistas and the gory violence along with extensive use of drugs make the film a landmark  counterculture film, and a “touchstone for a generation.”

From the National Lampoon's series all the way to legendary one-offs such as 2004's Johnson Family Vacation and 2000's Road Trip , open road movies remain some of the most entertaining and hilarious out there due to the fact that the participants hardly ever make it to where they plan on going in one piece. With us still being in the thick of summer, we thought it would be fun to take a look at the best road trip movies of all time. Buckle up and get the popcorn ready. You're going to need it.

After re-watching National Lampoon's Vacation , we can effectively conclude that this is one of the best and funniest road trip movies of all time. Chevy Chase steals the show with his wit, sarcasm, and foul sailor mouth, which will keep you entertained from start to finish. The entire National Lampoon's series is worth watching, so we recommend setting aside a day where you can knock them all out.

7. Thelma & Louise (1991)

  • Directed by: Ridley Scott

The two decide to flee to Mexico, and embark on a journey that includes running from the law and falling for hot guys.

  • Directed by: Hal Needham
  • Written by: Hal Needham, Robert L. Levy

  • Where They're Headed: Atlanta

Atlanta has a way of sometimes bringing the chaos, as demonstrated by 1977's Smokey and the Bandit . Anybody who calls themselves Bandit (Reynolds) is probably a person who's done some questionable in their lifetimes, which is probably why he's given the duties of transporting an illegal beer shipment from Texas to Atlanta. If Bandit had stayed on task he probably would have been able to easily accomplish the mission, but because he decides to pick up a rather hesitant bride to be (Field), things get a little complicated.

The partially hilarious and partially annoying Dumb and Dumber is always worth a watch. Quite possibly the two dumbest pair of friends to ever exist, Lloyd Christmas (Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Daniels), decide to go to Aspen, Colorado to return a suitcase full of money left behind by a woman in Harry's car. Somehow (don't ask), this leads to the duo being hunted by both the police and killers. Needless to say, the pair find themselves in a unique jam that they have to get out of.

  • Directed by: Roger Kumble
  • Written by: Emi Mochizuki, Carrie Evans, Cinco Paul, Ken Daurio
  • Stars: Martin Lawrence, Kym Whitley, Raven-Symoné, Brenda Song
  • Where They're Headed: Pittsburgh and Washington D.C.

2008's College Road Trip starring Raven-Symoné and Martin Lawrence remains underestimated in our book. Obviously Martin Lawrence is one of the funniest people to ever do it, and so is Raven. Put the both of them together, and you'll be laughing non-stop.

  • Directed by: Todd Phillips

16. Rain Man (1988)

  • Directed by: Barry Levinson
  • Written by:  Barry Morrow, Ronald Bass
  • Stars: Dustin Hoffman, Valeria Golino, Tom Cruise
  • Where They're Headed: Cincinnati, Ohio

Long before Tom Cruise was in Mission Impossible , he was in a rather poignant road trip drama called Road Man . Portraying a car dealer named Charlie Babbitt who returns home to Cincinnati, Ohio after learning that his estranged father has passed away, Road Man is a bit sad compared to what we know as the "traditional road trip film," but still a good watch.

17. Crossroads (2002)

  • Directed by: Tamra Davis
  • Written by:  Shonda Rhimes
  • Stars: Britney Spears, Zoe Saldana, Taryn Manning
  • Where They're Headed: LA to Tucson, Arizona

Dammit! We're putting this here because Crossroads didn't get enough credit at the time of its release in 2002, and it doesn't get enough credit now. This is a good movie, and we will forever stand by that!

  • Stars: Robert De Niro, Charles Grodin
  • Where They're Headed: All around the West Coast

1988's Midnight Run has a case for being one of the all-time great action films from the 1980s. A not-so-traditional "catch the bad guy" movie, the film is about bounty hunter Jack Walsh (De Niro), being hired to bring a mob accountant (Grodin) to Los Angeles. Walsh gets told ahead of time that the job will either be an easy one or a midnight run (meaning a chase), and, well, the latter happens.

John Cho and Mia Isaac

John Cho is a father on a mission in the first trailer for Amazon Studios’ Don’t Make Me Go .

Directed by Hannah Marks ( After Everything , Mark, Mary and Some Other People ) and written by Vera Herbert ( This Is Us ), the film follows Cho’s single father Max and his daughter Wally, played by Mia Isaac, as the duo goes on the road trip of a lifetime from California to New York.

They’re going under the premise of driving lessons for Wally and Max’s 20-year college reunion, where he also hopes to reunite with her mother after she left the family years ago. But there’s another reason the father-daughter team is going on the long drive: Max has a terminal disease and is hoping to use their days together during the cross-country trip to cram in the time, experiences and love Wally will miss when he’s gone.

That long trip, full of heart and humor, will see a father and daughter connect across the generational divide as they grapple with the expected and unexpected realities of their lifelong relationship cut short.

“When you look back on this trip, I want you to remember you and me spending time together, not you waiting for your boyfriend to call,” Max says at one point in the film’s trailer.

“I bet on you,” Wally tells her father at another point. “I want you for my whole life.”

Don’t Make Me Go also stars Jemaine Clement, Mitchell Hope, Stefania LaVie Owen and Kaya Scodelario and is produced by Donald De Line, Leah Holzer and Peter Saraf.

The movie will release worldwide July 15 on Prime Video.

Satisfy your wanderlust with 9 films you can watch on Netflix and Amazon RN

In light of all the travel restrictions and cancelled flights, it may feel mildly depressing to be stuck. After all, there’s only so much one can do at home. Rather than mellowing in sadness, satisfy your wanderlust with a movie or two. Take this time to get inspired for your next trip after the whole COVID-19 situation blows over. Here’s our full list of the best travel films on Netflix & Amazon prime –

Before Trilogy

road trip movie amazon prime

Those who have seen any one of the films from the ‘Before Trilogy’ (‘Before Sunrise’, ‘Before Sunset’, and ‘Before Midnight’) knows that location plays a big part. Each of the mellow, slice-of-life films revolve around a couple of hours in a specific location, making the backdrop just as much the main cast as the two lovers in the films. Go on a journey through Vienna , Paris , and Greece as you follow the love story of Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy) at three different times of their lives.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

best travel films

Wes Anderson ‘s films are some of the most celebrated in cinematic history. His penchant for visual motifs and symmetry makes every piece stunning to watch and ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ is one of, if not the most, famous work. The movie straddles numerous themes like friendship, fascism, and loyalty as well as richly layered plotlines that take place within the inspired-visuals of Europe.

Titanic

road trip movie amazon prime

The ending of ‘Titanic’ spells a frightening getaway on a cruise , but that doesn’t take away the fact that its morose scenes and opulent interiors are the perfect backdrops for the movie. A whirlwind romance meets luxurious cabins and beautiful scenery — who could ask for more?

Notting Hill

road trip movie amazon prime

1999 romantic comedy, ‘Notting Hill’, stars actors Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts as they navigate love and the watchful media eye. Much of the movie’s filming was on Portobello Road, in the quaint Notting Hill district of London , inspiring hordes of visitors each year to visit and recreate its scenes. Even without travelling, one can always live vicariously through this classic film for an overseas romance unlike any other.

Spirited Away

best travel films

Hayao Miyazaki has been known to scout real-life locations for his films, and ‘Spirited Away’, one of Studio Ghibli’s most beloved animated movies, is no different. The movie follows a young Chihiro as she gets pulled into the spiritual world while trying to save her parents. It captures beautiful scenes inspired by some of Japan’s most interesting landscapes, perfectly satisfying any wanderlust tendencies in these trying times.

The Beach

road trip movie amazon prime

One of the best travel films in 2000. The setting? ‘The Beach’. Leonardo Di Caprio stars in this film as a backpacker in search of a pristine, uninhabited island with a beautiful hidden beach and lagoon in the Gulf of Thailand. The clear waters and sandy white beaches featured in the movie were filmed in Ko Phi Phi, an archipelago of islands located in the Krabi Province of Thailand.

The Sound of Music

road trip movie amazon prime

Who could ever forget all the lyrical tunes and belting notes in ‘The Sound of Music’? The movie’s rolling hills of Austria set the scene for the von Trapp family as they navigate love, duty, and the war during the Second World War. It may be difficult to travel now, but this film might inspire you to book the next available flight out to Salzburg for the original Sound of Music Tour.

Murder on the Orient Express

films wanderlust travel

Before the world went into lockdown, slow travel was beginning to pick up again. Scenic routes make the journey part of your destination, and coupled with opulent decor and service, what more could anyone ask for? In case you’re hankering to get onboard, satisfy your wanderlust with a screening of ‘Murder on the Orient Express’. The luxurious trans-European train is home to a crime scene that will eventually be solved by Hercule Pierot, played by Kenneth Branagh.

Eat, Pray, Love

road trip movie amazon prime

There’s no movie about travelling out there better than ‘Eat, Pray, Love’. Embark on a journey with Elizabeth Gilbert (played by Julia Roberts) as she, newly divorced and at a crossroads in life, finds herself travelling around the world in hopes of self-discovery. From India to Italy to Indonesia, this movie is bound to take you on a ride, all in the comfort of your own home. Suffice to say, it is one of the best travel films ever made.
