Nine Inch Nails Plot Long-Awaited Return to the Road

  • By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Nine Inch Nails will return to the road for the first time in four years with a string of headlining gigs scheduled for the spring and late summer

The band will kick things off with a quick three-show run: April 28 in Raleigh, North Carolina, April 30 in Atlanta and May 1 in Franklin, Tennessee (just outside of Nashville). A lengthier trek will begin with two shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado Sept. 2 and 3, and wrap Sept. 24 with a special hometown gig at the the Blossom Music Center in Cleveland that will also feature sets from Ministry and Nitzer Ebb.

Nine Inch Nails have enlisted the help of several artists to provide support during the rest of the trek. Boy Harsher will join for gigs in Raleigh, North Carolina and Franklin, Tennessee, while 100 Gecs will open at both shows in Philadelphia. Yves Tumor will then perform during a stretch of gigs, Sept. 2 through 15.

Tickets for Nine Inch Nails’ tour will go on sale Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. local time. A fan presale will start Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. local time. Full information is available on Nine Inch Nails’ website .

Nine Inch Nails were scheduled to tour in 2020 and 2021, but scrapped those gigs because of the pandemic. The group has stayed busy over the past couple years, releasing two albums in 2020, Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts , and teaming up with noise-rock group Health for a new song, “Isn’t Everyone,” last May. In 2020, Nine Inch Nails were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .

Outside the band, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have kept characteristically busy with other projects as well, like producing Halsey’s most recent album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power . The duo also won their second Best Original Score Oscar in 2020 for their work on the Pixar movie Soul with Jon Batiste (they were nominated in the same category that year, too, for David Fincher’s Mank ).

Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor

Nine Inch Nails announced Monday (Feb. 7) that they’re headed out on the road this year for a handful of headlining dates.

The industrial rock band began by revealing a one-night-only event at Cleveland’s Blossom Music Center on Sept. 24 with special guests Ministry and Nitzer Ebb, only to follow it up in a separate post with 10 more dates that proceed the Cleveland show.

“Nine Inch Nails will be playing a limited number of shows in the US this spring and fall. Tickets on sale to the public Friday, February 11 at 10am local time,” they wrote alongside the full announcement.

NIN’s tour kicks off April 28 at the Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, N.C. The run of dates also includes appearances at Atlanta’s Shaky Knees festival and the inaugural Primavera Sounds Los Angeles, as well as back-to-back nights at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheater.

Last year, the rockers were supposed to play a pair of shows in Cleveland with Pixies to commemorate their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but the performances were scrapped due to a COVID surge around the U.S. at the time.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have been quite busy outside NIN in recent months. They produced Halsey’s fourth studio album If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power , which was released in August and is nominated for best alternative music album at the 64th annual Grammy Awards. And just last month, an expanded version of the LP dropped featuring two new bonus tracks.

Nine Inch Nails Reveal Spring + Fall 2022 U.S. Tour Dates

Nine Inch Nails ' 2021 tour plans did not come to fruition , but the band will be back on stages in 2022.

In fact, the group has just announced a brief run of spring tour dates, with a larger fall itinerary to follow. The spring run appears to be centered around the band's appearance at the Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta on April 30, with dates booked in Raleigh, North Carolina and Franklin, Tennessee bookending the festival week.

As for the fall, the band will get back underway with a two-night stand Sept. 2-3 at Denver's Red Rocks Amphitheatre. More dates are booked through the month of September, winding down Sept. 24 at Cleveland's Blossom Music Center. While support acts have not been named for either of the tours, it was revealed that Ministry and Nitzer Ebb would open that final Cleveland date.

While Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have primarily been tied up with their scoring work in recent years and they did take time out to produce Halsey's latest album, Reznor did tease a likely recording return for Nine Inch Nails last year right after their Oscar win for the Soul original score .

"What we've tried to do ... is break it up where we do some rock music and come back and do some film work. We've just done three pretty big [scores] with  Watchme n,  Mank  and  Soul  in a row," stated Reznor in a post-Oscar interview. "We should be on tour but Covid has prevented that and we are planning on working on Nine Inch Nails material as soon as probably tomorrow."

Tickets for Nine Inch Nails spring and fall shows will go on sale this Friday (Feb. 11) at 10AM local time. Check their website for ticketing info.

Nine Inch Nails Announce 2022 US Tour, Including Show with Ministry and Nitzer Ebb

The post Nine Inch Nails Announce 2022 US Tour, Including Show with Ministry and Nitzer Ebb appeared first on Consequence .

Nine Inch Nails have announced a 2022 US tour, including a hometown show in Cleveland, Ohio, with fellow industrial acts Ministry and Nitzer Ebb . It marks NIN’s first extensive outing in four years.

The tour is comprised of a few dates in the spring, followed by a run of shows in September. Tickets go on sale on Friday (February 11th) at 10 a.m. local time and can be purchased via Ticketmaster , with pre-sales beginning as early as Tuesday.

The Cleveland show concludes the tour on September 24th at the Blossom Music Center. It promises a dream bill for industrial fans: Ministry and Nitzer Ebb helped pioneer the genre in the 1980s, paving the way for Nine Inch Nails.

Ministry dropped their new album Moral Hygiene in October and will head out for an extensive spring US tour with the Melvins and Corrosion of Conformity (get tickets here ). UK-based Nitzer Ebb are celebrating their 40th anniversary as a band this year. Although they haven’t released a new album since 2010, the group — which pioneered the EBM style of industrial dance music — has remained active as a live act.

Meanwhile, Nine Inch Nails have been working on new music. Frontman Trent Reznor told the press at the 2021 Academy Awards (where he and NIN bandmate Atticus Ross won for Best Original Score for their work on the movie Soul ) that the band was set to hit the studio immediately . That was nearly a year ago, so a 2022 album is not out of the question. In fact, we’ve listed NIN’s next LP as one of our 35 Most Anticipated Metal & Hard Rock Albums of 2022 .

Nine Inch Nails Announce 2022 U.S. Tour Dates

Nine Inch Nails is back on the road for the first time in four years. The rock band has announced some U.S. tour dates scheduled for 2022.

Following a few dates this spring, the band will begin a 9-show run this September, starting with two shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Sept. 2 and 3. The final show will take place Sept. 24 in Cleveland, with special guest sets from Ministry and Nitzer Ebb. As for other support, three different acts will open on select dates: Boy Harsher, 100 gecs, and Yves Tumor.

Nine Inch Nails were originally scheduled to tour in 2020 and 2021, but those dates were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the group released two albums in 2020: Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts . That same year they were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Outside the band, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have kept extremely busy with other projects. They produced Halsey’s most recent album , If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power , and won their second Best Original Score Oscar in 2020 for their work on the Pixar movie Soul with Jon Batiste.

Tickets for Nine Inch Nails’ tour can be found on their official website .

The start of Wish with the house lights on and the stage full of fog is absolutely epic. As TR stated, this will be the last performance of 'The Cold And Black And Infinite' era. I assume losing the raw aesthetics that we've seen on stage since 2017 and maybe one member is taking time away from touring? Not sure. Either way, NIN blew the roof off with this set. Really enjoyed all the performances from the evening. Thanks to anonymous for the feed, it was quickly worked on and matrixed together! I heard that the livestream audio had some echo in it throughout the night. So hopefully this makes up for it! Note this was uploaded to DIME but was banned because of the stream still being available for purchase. This is not the stream. All audience sourced. There was also a few changes to this audio recording and is the definitive source. I made a few errors that you may or may not notice in the initial seed.

Ironically, he was seated a row or two behind us at this show! Tape is really really good.

I was never a big fan so this sat until now and was given to RyanJ to add to his NIN archive. Big thanks to him, as one taper to another, for sharing some fine ass recordings that many have enjoyed. We managed to get 1st row of the side section in the club seating which was real nice. As a result, I think the sound came out pretty decent and there is very little crowd noise in this one except when my wife is talking for a few seconds in the beginning. :) There are several other sources to this show so it may not be the best but for those who are completists, I'm sure this one will be a welcomed edition. Enjoy."

Nine Inch Nails Play First Show in Four Years: Video + Setlist

Nine Inch Nails played their first show in four years at the Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, North Carolina on Thursday night.

The Trent Reznor-led outfit performed a career-spanning 21-song set that opened with four songs from The Fragile , followed by multiple tracks from each The Downward Spiral and With Teeth . Notably, the band dusted off “Every Day Is Exactly the Same,” from With Teeth , for the first time since 2006.

Elsewhere in the set, NIN covered a pair of David Bowie songs, “I’m Afraid of Americans” and “Fashion,” the latter marking the first time the band performed the song live in concert. (Reznor and Atticus Ross first covered the song as part of a David Bowie virtual tribute concert in 2021.)

To close the show, NIN played a three-song encore that included “Reptile,” “And All That Could Have Been,” and “Hurt.”

Watch fan-capture footage of the concert and see the full setlist below.

Thursday night’s show in Raleigh marked the beginning of Nine Inch Nails’ 2022 US tour . They’re next set to headline Atlanta’s Shaky Knees Festival on Saturday, followed by shows in Daytona Beach, Philadelphia, and Boston, with additional dates scheduled in the fall. Check out their full tour itinerary , and get tickets to their upcoming dates via Ticketmaster .

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio -- Occasionally, if you’re lucky enough, you get to witness a musical moment. One where a phrase like “One Night Only” rings true and words like “epic” and “monumental” are justified.

Nine Inch Nails’ return to Blossom Music Center on Saturday night certainly fit that bill. But fans had to wait for it.

The band Trent Reznor founded in Cleveland in 1988 hasn’t played Northeast Ohio since 2013. Reznor was set to do something special for NIN’s 2020 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction. But COVID-19 prevented that event from happening in Cleveland.

Nine Inch Nails was set for a makeup gig of sorts with back-to-back concerts planned for Jacobs Pavilion (with the Pixies no less) in 2021. But the pandemic’s wrath struck again . The delay wasn’t lost on Reznor.

“We finally f---ing made it here,” he told the massive crowd – bodies as far as the eye could see – a quarter of the way through Nine Inch Nails’ nearly two-hour set Saturday. In truth, Reznor and company had been in town for two days.

The celebration began on Friday during “Nine Inch Nails Fan Day” at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In addition to some eye-popping artifacts on display (including a mannequin suspended from above, mimicking Reznor spinning in the iconic “Closer” video ), the members of Nine Inch Nails appeared on stage in the museum’s Foster Theater. That’s when history was made.

Reznor and the current members of Nine Inch Nails were joined by several former members, including Richard Patrick, Chris Vrenna, Danny Lohner and Charlie Clouser. Patrick’s appearance was especially shocking given his public fallout with Reznor and the resentment that caused him to form another legendary Cleveland band, Filter.

Those former bandmates would take the spotlight again on stage Saturday at Blossom. But first, Reznor brought some other friends along.

British EBM and industrial dance act Nitzer Ebb opened the show. The band – one of Reznor’s favorites – arrived in the mid-1980s and was highly influential in the development of industrial rock. The primal three-piece rewarded a crowd that arrived early with a seductive set that peaked with “Join the Chant,” where fans followed along to singer Doug McCarthy’s every growl.

Tickets for Saturday’s show were surprisingly still available earlier in the day on resale markets for as low as $9. And from the sea of fans covering every inch of Blossom’s lawn, it appeared every single one of those tickets was gobbled up.

Chicago industrial rock pioneers Ministry took the stage next. The band’s soundcheck was so loud, you were forced to put your earplugs in, if you had them.

Seats had been moved from near the stage to create a standing-room-only pit. A fence was set up at the front of Ministry’s stage design. Behind it, frontman Al Jourgensen emerged from a cloud of smoke, lurking like a nightcrawler in the shadows.

Ministry’s performance of “Stigmata” marked the moment Saturday’s event turned into a full-throttle rock show. A spaced-out, distorted cover of Black Sabbath’s “Supernaut,” which Jourgensen dedicated to Reznor, followed.

Jourgensen – a 63-year-old with the intensity of a pumped-up 20-something – broke out his guitar to match the piercing sirens of “N.W.O.” Ministry closed things out by emptying its smoke machine for the jolt of electricity that was “Thieves.”

Everyone knew what was coming next. Nine Inch Nails took the stage promptly at 9:25 p.m. for one of the greatest and most singular concerts in the band’s history.

A spotlight hit Reznor as he sang the opening lyrics to “Somewhat Damaged.” The performance set the stage for NIN’s amazing lights show, flashing in and out of darkness and accented by fantastic, black-and-white camera footage that aired on the venue’s large screens.

You’d be reading this story for days if I were to describe every highlight from Nine Inch Nails’ performance. Each song played out like a mini-movie, placing its own unique imprint on the show.

The intense “March of Pigs” weaved into “Piggy” with Reznor standing at the edge of the stage, holding out his microphone for fans to sing along. “The Lovers” provided an emotional tour de force that transitioned into “Reptile,” which saw the stage soaked in green lighting.

Reznor broke out his saxophone for “God Break Down the Door” before delivering big hits like “The Perfect Drug” and “Closer.” It was then onto the raw intensity of “Burn” and another singalong fest for “The Hand that Feeds.”

Fifteen songs into its set, Nine Inch Nails delivered a performance that was more than worth the wait. Then, the band made history again.

As Reznor and Atticus Ross played keyboards during the eerie “The Frail,” stagehands began setting up more instruments and microphones amid the darkness. As the lights brightened, you could see Vrenna emerging on a second drum set, Lohner holding a guitar and Clouser manning a keyboard.

The venue’s big screens then showed Patrick standing stoically at the side of the stage. Was he there to watch or play? A minute later, Patrick walked on stage to a huge roar, some fans even in tears.

Featuring a lineup of musicians that had never appeared on stage at a Nine Inch Nails show before, Reznor took a trip down memory lane, performing “Eraser,” “Wish,” “Sin” and “Gave Up.” Patrick then said the words, “Hey Man Nice Shot” before breaking into Filter’s 1995 hit of the same name. It was a moment Nine Inch Nails fans thought they’d never see.

One song later, the performance ended somewhat abruptly. Nine Inch Nails broke into “Head Like a Hole.” Reznor held his hand up to thank the crowd. Those expecting an encore were, instead, greeted with the lights going up at just after 11 p.m.

An army of Nine Inch Nails fans lumbered out of Blossom Music Center like zombies, trying to comprehend what they just witnessed. As it turns out, it was the end of an era.

Reznor took to the band’s Discord channel after the show to reveal, “When/If we tour again, it will be different. Not like [2018′s “Cold Black Infinite” tour] era – It’s over.”

“One Night Only” indeed.

‘Kidz Bop' Could Never: Watch a Bunch of Children Cover Nine Inch Nails' Self-Loathing Anthem ‘Wish'

Music is a great way to teach children about the important things in life - love and loss, hope and sadness, the power of people, and absolutely debilitating, destructive self-loathing and masochism. That's why we must give a shout-out to the kids who dared to do the impossible and covered Nine Inch Nails' "Wish."

The cover is at once very faithful and, understandably, heavily censored: Total hard rock abandon, led by a menacing lead vocal performance from 10-year-old singer Zoë Franziska, who still manages to inject some serious edge into tweaked, age-appropriate lyrics like "Gotta listen to your big-time, hard-line, bad luck, fist… bump" (if you know, you know).

Accompanying the cover is a music video that starts with a young girl enduring the most boring birthday ever. After blowing out the candle on a cupcake, she makes a wish (get it) and receives a raucous bash filled with mosh pits, classic video games, a lot of candy, and a sick performance of a song about being incredibly sick in the head. Exactly what every child wants.

Along with Franziska, the "Wish" cover was performed by guitarists Logan K (10) and Xander Markewich (13), bassist Seba Stephens (11), drummer Will Bright (18), and keytar player - hell yeah they got a keytar in there - Brackston Applegate (10). The cover was produced by the O'Keefe Music Foundation, a non-profit that aims to bring music education to kids around the world for free.

Nine Inch Nails originally released "Wish" back in 1992 on their EP , Broken , which fell between their 1989 debut Pretty Hate Machine and 1994's blockbuster The Downward Spiral . The track notably earned Nine Inch Nails their Grammy Award, winning Best Metal Performance.
