3-Day Cruises from Baltimore

There is considerable demand for 3-day cruises out of Baltimore. People want a weekend cruise that is easy to fit into their schedule and is affordable. The quick trip is long enough to be fun but short enough to avoid boredom.

A three day cruise is often combined with other activities for a varied and fun vacation. It's a strategy that follows the "don't put all your eggs in one basket" saying. Watch a 3 day cruise video on YouTube.

Unfortunately, the Congress passed legislation that makes it impossible to offer a 3-day cruise from Baltimore. The large ships sailing from here were built in other countries and the law says that they must always visit a foreign port on their cruises. The sticking point is that there is no foreign port close enough to Maryland to do a cruise as short as just 3 days.

Germany and Russia spar over a leaked audio on missiles for Ukraine. Berlin promises to investigate

The Associated Press

BERLIN (AP) — The German government on Monday vehemently rejected allegations that Russia’s leak of a conversation by high-ranking German military officers was an indication that Berlin was preparing for war against Russia.

At the same time, the government sought to contain the domestic fallout from the leak and promised a quick investigation into how it was possible that a conversation by top German military personnel could be intercepted and published.

“It is absolutely clear that such claims that this conversation would prove, that Germany is preparing a war against Russia, that this is absurdly infamous Russian propaganda,” a spokesman for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told reporters in Berlin.

Government spokesman Wolfgang Buechner said the leak was part of Russia’s “information war” against the West, and that the aim was to create discord within Germany.

The 38-minute recording features military officers discussing in German how Taurus long-range cruise missiles could be used by Kyiv against invading Russian forces. While German authorities haven’t questioned the authenticity of the recording, Scholz said a week ago that delivering these weapons to Ukraine isn’t an option — and that he doesn’t want Germany to be drawn into the war directly.

Russia’s foreign ministry, however, on Monday threatened Germany with “dire consequences” in connection with the leak, though it didn’t elaborate.

“If nothing is done, and the German people do not stop this, then there will be dire consequences first and foremost for Germany itself,” foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

Relations between the two countries have continuously deteriorated since Russia invaded Ukraine two years ago.

The audio leak was posted Friday by Margarita Simonyan, chief editor of Russian state-funded television channel RT, on social media on Friday, the same day that late opposition politician Alexei Navalny was laid to rest after his still-unexplained death two weeks ago in an Arctic penal colony. It also surfaced just weeks before Russia’s presidential election .

In the leaked audio, four officers, including the head of Germany’s Air Force, Ingo Gerhartz, can be heard discussing deployment scenarios for Taurus missiles in Ukraine before a meeting with Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, German news agency dpa reported.

The officers then states that early delivery and rapid deployment of Taurus long-range cruise missiles would only be possible with the participation of German soldiers — and that training Ukrainian soldiers to deploy the Taurus on their own would be possible, but would take months.

The recording also shows the German government hasn’t given its OK for the delivery of the cruise missiles sought by Ukraine, dpa reported.

There has been a debate in Germany on whether to supply the missiles to Ukraine as Kyiv faces battlefield setbacks, and while military aid from the United States is held up in Congress. Germany is now the second-biggest supplier of military aid to Ukraine after the U.S., and is further stepping up its support this year .

Scholz’s insistence last week on not giving Taurus missiles to Ukraine came after Germany stalled for months on the country’s desire for Taurus missiles, which have a range of up to 500 kilometers (310 miles) and could in theory be used against targets far inside Russian territory.

On Monday, the chancellor reiterated his stance during a visit at a school in Sindelfingen in southwestern Germany.

“I’m the chancellor and that’s why it’s valid,” he said regarding his “no” to the delivery of Taurus missiles, dpa reported.

Also on Monday, Germany’s ambassador visited Russia’s foreign ministry in Moscow. While Russia media reported that Ambassador Alexander Graf Lambsdorff had been summoned by the foreign ministry, the German government said his visit had been planned well before the audio was published.

Germany’s defense ministry tried to downplay the significance of the officers’ conversation in the leak — saying it was merely an “exchange of ideas” before a meeting with the defense minister.

The ministry said it was investigating how it was possible that a conversation by top German military personnel could be intercepted and leaked by the Russians. It promised to report of its findings. Several German media have reported that the officers were in a WebEx meeting when they were taped.

Buechner, the spokesman of the chancellor, said that the German government would also look into how “we can better counter targeted disinformation, especially from Russia.”

The Kremlin on Monday said that it looked forward to the results of the German government’s investigation.

“Mr. Scholz said that a fast, complete and effective investigation would be carried out. We hope that that we will be able to find out the outcome of that investigation,” spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.

In London, a spokesman for U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak warned that “we do have to treat anything coming out of the Kremlin with caution,” noting the Russian government’s record of spreading misinformation.

“It is in their interests to sow disunity amongst allies who are seeking to support the armed forces of Ukraine,” spokesman Dave Pares said. “We should not fall into that trap.”

Katie Marie Davies reported from Manchester, England. Jill Lawless contributed to this report from London.

Norwegian Dawn cruise ship allowed to dock in Mauritius after cholera scare

February 27, 2024 / 8:34 AM EST / AP

A U.S.-owned luxury cruise ship with more than 3,000 passengers and crew was allowed to dock Monday in the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius after being quarantined offshore for a day over fears of a possible cholera outbreak onboard, authorities said.

The Mauritius government cleared the Norwegian Dawn, which is owned and operated by the Miami-based Norwegian Cruise Line company, to dock at the harbor in the capital, Port Louis, after health officials found no traces of cholera in tests conducted on samples from the ship.

Mauritius authorities blocked the ship from docking Sunday because 15 people onboard were experiencing vomiting and diarrhea. The Mauritius Ports Authority said it took the decision "in order to avoid any health risks," and sent officials onboard to collect the samples for testing.

The Mauritius government said the sick passengers who had been isolated after falling ill in fact had mild cases of the viral infection gastroenteritis.

Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement that there were "a small number of guests experiencing mild symptoms of a stomach-related illness" and there were "no confirmed cases nor any evidence of cholera."

The Mauritius government "required testing in an overabundance of caution," it added.

Kenya Cruise Ship Tourists

Several countries in mainland southern African have experienced serious outbreaks of cholera over the last year, possibly leading to the concern from authorities in Mauritius, an island nation of about 1.2 million people off the east coast of Africa that's a popular tourist destination.

Cruise ships were problematic during the COVID-19 pandemic , with many of them reporting outbreaks of the disease and having to be quarantined at ports.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says there's a cholera epidemic in southern Africa, with a total of around 188,000 cases and 3,000 deaths in eight countries since January 2023.

Cholera spreads through food or water contaminated with the bacteria that causes the disease. Health officials were also testing the food on the Norwegian Dawn for cholera. Those tests results hadn't yet come back, but authorities said they were satisfied that there was no cholera threat after the waste water tests were negative.

There were 2,184 passengers and 1,026 crew members onboard the Norwegian Dawn when it arrived in Mauritius, the ports authority said. Around 2,000 of those passengers were due to disembark in Mauritius and end their cruise and 2,279 new passengers were due to get onboard.

Everyone leaving the ship would still be screened by health officials, said Dr Bhooshun Ori, the director of health services at the Mauritius Ministry of Health.

Norwegian Cruise Line said passengers would disembark from the ship on Tuesday.

UK Daily Life 2023

The 964-feet long Norwegian Dawn has 14 decks, with a casino, a theater and a video game arcade among its facilities.

A regular cabin starts at around $2,000 per person for a 12-day cruise, according to the company's website. For $47,000, you can have a 3-bedroom Garden Villa that comes with a private garden, a hot tub, an outdoor dining area and your own butler service.

Warriors’ strategy against Jaylen Brown backfires as Celtics cruise to 52-point win

BOSTON — The Golden State Warriors , dragging at the end of a successful trip and adjusting to the announced absence of Kristaps Porziņģis , rerouted their defensive game plan against the Boston Celtics not long before tipoff Sunday afternoon.

“Like 15 minutes before we left the locker room,” Draymond Green estimated.

The main crux of the strategy, as Warriors coach Steve Kerr relayed after the game but was obvious to anyone who watched, involved Green guarding Jaylen Brown but not staying attached to him. Green sagged off Brown in an attempt to muck up the paint.

“We wanted Draymond to be able to help on drives and make sure we weren’t giving up easy stuff,” Kerr said.

Steph Curry said it was a “joint decision” between the team’s leaders and coaches. The Celtics have a 121.7 offensive rating, the best in NBA history. They’re 30-3 at home, loaded with weapons and have been scorching opponents. So the Warriors ignored Brown, who entered the game at 34.8 percent from 3 on the season, in hopes he’d miss the available 3s when they were inevitably funneled in his direction.

“A team that has that many threats, you try to find some weak spot to see if it’ll throw them off a little bit,” Curry said. “Obviously, it didn’t work.”

Brown made a batting practice 3 on Boston’s first possession and, in the process, discovered the Warriors were willing to cede clean looks anytime he wanted it. He made a 12-footer on the next possession down and then the aggressiveness ramped up.

Right before the nine-minute mark, he walked into a top-of-the-key 3 as Green stood at the free-throw line. This is what most of the first quarter looked like:

Brown then made a corner 3 and two more straightaway 3s that Green and the Warriors willingly gifted. Jayson Tatum , Derrick White and Jrue Holiday were mostly quiet in the process, but Brown erupted. He had 19 points in the first seven minutes, including five 3s. The pressure that can sometimes get to his dribble wasn’t there. He revved into a rhythm and shot the Celtics to a blowout win: 140-88.

“It ain’t work. Oh well. We move on,” Green said. “I thought it was fun to try. I was actually all for it. Let’s try it. See if it works. If it don’t, oh well. If it does, we found something. All right, it don’t. So we move on.”

The score was briefly tied at 21-21. Brown’s three consecutive 3s made it 30-21, which was only the initial steps of a Celtics stampede. Boston went on an outrageous 61-17 run in the final 18 minutes of the half. The Warriors didn’t make a shot in the final six minutes of the first quarter. They trailed 82-38 at halftime. It was the most points they’d given up in a half this season and the fewest they’d scored.

Curry said the failure of the strategy against Brown bled into the offensive ineptitude. Curry, who entered the game questionable with some knee bursitis, missed all nine of his 3s and rested the entire second half.

“When you have a creative idea and it doesn’t work, you’re taking the ball out of the basket, they’re hitting 10 3s in the first quarter,” Curry said. “That’s what we used to do to teams. It’s kind of demoralizing, especially on the road. It’s a shot you’re comfortable giving up, and they’re taking advantage. Then it feels like we got to play home run basketball on the other end to make it.”

Kerr didn’t go into great detail on the strategic misstep because he wanted to “flush it” and pinned some blame on the poor transition defense, which gave up 42 Boston fast-break points. The larger point: No strategic answer was available Sunday for what a rested, charged-up Celtics team had ready for the fatigued Warriors.

Here’s Steve Kerr postgame after the 52-point loss in Boston. He said it didn’t concern him, “flush it”, and discusses the decision to have Draymond Green sag off Jaylen Brown. Also: Brandin Podziemski will return on Wednesday pic.twitter.com/MSOmPEwPtC — Anthony Slater (@anthonyVslater) March 3, 2024

“Boston was amazing,” Kerr said. “We weren’t beating them today.”

The Warriors finished the trip 3-1. That’s an overall success. They handled a bad Washington Wizards team, took apart an injured New York Knicks team and finished off the lottery Toronto Raptors despite a nightmare day of travel that didn’t have them to their hotel until 7 a.m. They return home for two days of rest before facing the Milwaukee Bucks , Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs .

The pack of West teams above them have fallen back within striking distance. At 32-28, they’re tied with the Los Angeles Lakers for the ninth seed, 1 1/2 games behind the Dallas Mavericks (who lost to the Philadelphia 76ers at home) for the eighth seed, 2 1/2 behind the Sacramento Kings for seventh and three behind the Phoenix Suns for sixth.

“No regrets on how we approached it,” Curry said. “Learning lesson for us to take the hit we took tonight and not let it linger. On the whole, we’ve been playing some solid basketball. Wash this one down the drain, but remind yourself the level we have to get to if we want to be the team that’s a serious threat at the end of the year.”

Which might be the larger lesson of the past few weeks. The Warriors have stabilized into a legitimate playoff team, harboring realistic beliefs they can play themselves into the first round. They’re 11-3 in their last 14.

But they’ve also lost to a powerhouse Denver Nuggets team at home — Denver is 4-0 against them this season — and just suffered an embarrassing 52-point blowout loss in Boston on the national stage, letting the world know they remain a level or two below the elite. But Curry said he believes the Warriors can get there.

“Once you get into the playoffs and you have a series in front of you, understand who your opponent is, go through the preparation — we’ve been good in those scenarios,” Curry said. “That’s the big picture.”
