WINE SAFARI

Food & wine tasting day perthshire, sunday march 31st 2024.

Our Mhor wine safaris are becoming legendary across Perthshire! It’s all about having a fabulous wine tasting experience day, where we walk along Balquhidder glen, stopping along the way to drink and eat, fuelling the rest of the stroll up to Monachyle Mhor hotel.

You’ll meet us at Mhor 84 for breakfast with a glass of something special and then we’ll take a two-mile stroll up to Creag an Tuirc – once the gathering spot for clan MacLaren – for the best views in Balquhidder, Perthshire. We’ll rest a while there and have an outdoor food demonstration and wine pairing. It’s all about discovering the delights of food and wine in the great outdoors.

Walking on for a further two miles to the shoreline of Loch Voil, we’ll indulge in another pick-me-up and delicious delight to eat. (This is a fun food and wine pairing and wine-tasting experience with a difference and loved by all who have done it.)

After the final two miles we gather in the Dutch Barn at Monachyle Mhor, fires lit, for a hearty Perthshire produce lunch, a little more wine and the perfect opportunity to buy the wine you have tasted. After your Scottish food and wine tasting and pairing safari experience, we have arranged transport back up Balquhidder glen to Mhor 84 from Monachyle Mhor for you.

Whisky tours in scotland, grab yourself a wee dram for our guide to the ultimate scottish whisky tours.

Whisky making is serious business in Scotland; there are more than 120 active distilleries, spread across five whisky regions. The 'water of life', as it's known, is Scotland's largest export and, it's safe to say, we've been known to enjoy a dram or two ourselves.

Crafting the golden elixir is a fascinating, but lengthy process. For a whisky to officially be called 'Scotch', it must have been aged in Scotland for at least three years and made in a manner strictly specified by the 'Scotch Whisky Regulations'. There's no half measures here!

Many distilleries offer tours and tastings so you can sample their whisky's flavours, hear from their passionate team and see where the whisky's themselves are born.

And of course, in addition to being perfectly-placed to enjoy a distillery tour, many of our Luxury Scotland member properties have spectacular and well-stocked whisky bars where you can enjoy this wonderful spirit during your stay.

So, pour a wee dram and join us on a virtual tour of the five whisky regions and some of the best distilleries to visit in Scotland.

Highland Whisky Tours

We start with the largest and most northerly region, the Highlands, which boasts a wide range of whisky distilleries including some of the famous names you'll no doubt already be familiar with. Rich in diversity, flavour and style, whiskies from this region certainly reward those who venture north.

Regional highlights

The Deanston Distillery , located close to Luxury Scotland Member, Cromlix , was originally a cotton mill, which opened its doors in 1785. It was at the forefront of new beginnings as Scotland moved from agriculture to industrialisation. When the cotton industry went into decline, the mill was converted into a distillery and the first bottle of Deanston Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky was produced in 1974. The process begins with water from the River Teith, which flows over granite, making it very soft and perfect for making whisky. In 2012 the Deanston Distillery proudly opened its doors to its brand new visitor centre, offering tours, tastings, and access to exclusive limited editions.

Tullibardine Distillery stands proudly in the village of Blackford, also home to Luxury Scotland Member, Highland Spring . The iconic hotel,  Gleneagles , is located just 3 miles away. In 1947 William Delmé-Evans began converting what had previously been a brewery into The Tullibardine Distillery. Upon testing the water from the nearby springs, Delmé-Evans knew he had found the perfect location for distilling whisky. In 1979 Highland Spring began bottling the same water.

Blair Athol Distillery is one of the oldest whisky distilleries in Scotland. It stands at the gateway to the Scottish Highlands, in the picturesque town of Pitlochry, also home to Luxury Scotland Member Fonab Castle Hotel & Spa . Blair Athol’s ancient source of water – the Allt Dour – flows through the grounds from the slopes of Ben Vrackie, contributing to the whisky’s quality and smooth finish.

Glen Garioch Distillery (Garioch pronounced Geery), is Scotland’s most easterly distillery and is situated in the historic old town of Oldmeldrum, near Aberdeen. It was established in 1797. Only ever produced in small, precious batches, Glen Garioch is a rare find indeed, but warmly appreciated by those who like a hearty Highland malt. The perfect base for a visit, The Marcliffe Hotel and Spa is just a 40 minute drive away.

On the West coast, you'll find The Torridon in its spectacular setting at the head of a spectacular sea loch. It's also home to a whisky Bar with a superb array of 365 whiskies, and their whisky tasting experiences are, quite rightly, a favourite of their guests.

A little further West, on the Isle of Skye,  Talisker , is set on the shores of Loch Harport, with dramatic views of the Cuillins. This alluring, full-bodied single malt whisky is so easy to enjoy, and like Skye itself, so hard to leave. Kinloch Lodge , on the shore of Loch-Na-Dal, is just under an hour away and offers both whisky tasting as well as whisky and food pairing experiences.

Moving more central, 15 miles outside of Inverness, you'll find  Glen Ord Distillery , Scotland’s oldest distillery and the last remaining one on the Black Isle. Barley from the Black Isle meets water from the White Burn to make a Scotch of vibrant colour – The Singleton of Glen Ord. A beautifully renovated, Georgian mansion house, Rocpool Reserve , is ideally located nearby.

About 40 miles North of Inverness, you'll find Glenmorangie , the acclaimed distillery famed for smooth, rich whiskies with intriguing, complex flavours. They offer a range of tasting experiences, ideal for whisky connoisseurs. Guests of Glenmorangie House also receive a complimentary tour of the Glenmorangie Distillery visitor centre. Their Brand Home Manager, Stuart Smith, discusses the famous brand in more detail in our recent interview here.

Scotch Whisky Tours

Lowland Whisky Tours

The Lowland region includes Edinburgh and the Lothians as well as Glasgow and the Clyde Valley, and therefore some of the more easily accessible distilleries in Scotland. Known for being light-bodied with sweeter and almost floral tones, malts from this region are considered an ideal introduction for those new to whisky drinking.

At the top of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, you can visit The Scotch Whisky Experience , a five star visitor attraction where you can take a tour and indulge in a tasting or blending session. For a more in depth experience you can sign up to their one day Scotch Whisky Training School.

In 2021 whisky giant, Diageo, will be opening The Johnnie Walker Experience in Edinburgh’s West End. The detailed plans for inside this eight-storey building are being kept a closely guarded secret, but will include a multi-sensory, immersive visitor experience, guiding people throughout the 200 year history and the flavours of Scotland. You can pre-register to visit  here .

The Dunstane Houses , is a family-run, five-star boutique hotel in the west end, where you can enjoy the spirit of Orkney in Edinburgh. The owners, Shirley & Derek Mowat, grew up on Orkney and they have one of the most extensive rare-whisky selections in the city, with more than 70 varieties in their vintage wall cabinet, including a rare Highland Park. They can also arrange some great whisky tasting experiences.

Edinburgh's no. 1 hotel on TripAdvisor, Fingal , is a 5-star luxury floating hotel, berthed on the vibrant waterfront. You may well choose to tour the distilleries from the comfort of the spectacular on-board bar, The Lighthouse, that houses a single cask collection with some of the finest whiskies from around the country.

Head a little further north and you'll find  Eden Mill , in St Andrews. Based on the site of a historic distillery, on the banks of the River Eden, Eden Mill was the first to make spirits in the region for 150 years and in 2018 they released the first Single Malt Whisky to be distilled in St Andrews in over 150 years. The iconic golf resort, the Old Course Hotel , is just a short 10 minute drive away.

Kingsbarns distillery , about 15 minutes’ drive from St Andrews, is a family owned and operated distillery located in a restored historic farm steading, offering tours and tastings.

Finally, you have Kinross House , an exclusive use venue that has a whisky room where you can sample a wide range of premium whiskies including their own Kinross House whisky, produced by Macallan in Speyside. A whisky expert can also be arranged to take guests through a fascinating whisky tasting experience.

On Scotland's West coast, you'll find another Luxury Scotland Member, well-placed for a whisky tour in both the Campbeltown, Islay and Lowland regions. Crossbasket Castle's French-inspired Scottish cuisine and bar (with 30 whisky blends and malts) is just 20 minutes from Glasgow.

Campbeltown Whisky Tours

Scotland's smallest whisky region has just three distilleries, but still warrants a visit for those who value a malt whisky that some describe as 'fiercely enduring and distinctive'.

Glen Scotia is one of Scotland's smallest distilleries, while Springbank Whisky Distillers is the oldest independently and family owned distillery in Scotland.

The Crinan Hotel , on Argyll's rugged coastline, is very well placed to visit both Glen Scotia and Springbank Whisky Distillers at just a 1 hour and 20 minutes drive.

wine safari scotland

Speyside Whisky Tours

World-renowned, the Speyside whisky region in the North East of Scotland is home to over half of all distilleries in Scotland as well as the UK's only working cooperage ( Speyside Cooperidge ) where they craft American Oak casks that help mature whiskies in Scotland and around the world. Whiskies from Speyside tend to have smooth and refined flavours, often lighter and sweeter than other Scotch single malts.

Glenlivet and Aberlour distilleries offer wonderfully in-depth tasting sessions, while Macallan offers a very modern tour of their incredible distillery and visitor centre.

Glenfiddich's Spirit of Innovation Tour takes visitors on a journey through every step in the whisky making process including their innovative and experimental releases.

Islay Whisky Tours

Islay, the island known affectionately as 'the whisky island', lies just off the Argyll coast in the West of Scotland. Despite its relatively small size, it's home to nine distilleries producing whisky with a characteristic peaty, smoky flavour.

Today, Islay’s distilleries are spread across the island; Bowmore ,  Bruichladdich and Kilchoman can be found right in the heart of the island and there are three more located next to each other, collectively known as the Kildalton Distilleries . The most recently opened  Ardnahoe Distillery  launched in April 2019 and Bowmore is said to be one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, dating back to 1779.

Luxury Scotland Member, The Machrie , have organised a special whisky experience with Lagavulin Distillery . Guests can enjoy a trip to Lagavulin Distillery where they can enjoy a Core Range Tasting. Their 3-course lunch is paired with some of Islay’s famous malts to provide a variance of flavours and aromas to enhance the menu.

Glenapp Castle in Ayrshire, regularly takes guests over to Islay or the Mull of Kintyre by boat to experience the whisky distilleries. Closer to Glenapp, in nearby Kirkoswald, the whisky bottlers, A.D. Rattray, have established a whisky experience where visitors can test the blends that they bottle.

Chauffer-Driven Whisky Tours with Little

Sightseeing by chauffeur-driven car is undoubtedly the best way to see Scotland. Luxury sightseeing tours are a speciality of Little’s , a Luxury Scotland Partner. From bespoke tour design services to the remarkable knowledge of their touring chauffeurs, the Little’s team is dedicated to creating a memorable experience for you or your clients. And with your own driver, you can enjoy your whisky tasting to the full.

Slainte Mhath!

All that remains from us is to wish you Slainte Mhath (pronounced Slanj-a-va), the traditional toast to say ‘Good Health’ in Gaelic, during your whisky tour of Scotland.

Experience the Rugged Beauty of Scotland on Glenapp Castle’s Sea Safari

This boat trip through the Inner Hebrides includes an overnight stay on the remote island of Jura.

By Irenie Forshaw

Glenapp Castle sea safari camp

“I love sitting up here,” says Mark Littlejohn, gazing out at the Isle of Islay. It’s early morning and we’ve just climbed the hill to a grassy bank above the camp. We’re staying on Jura – one of the most remote and wild islands in the Southern Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland , where George Orwell penned 1984. Everything is completely quiet and still, except for the occasional bark of a seal.

Littlejohn lives here during the summer months, ensuring the camp is ready when guests from Glenapp Castle stop for the night as part of the hotel’s luxury ‘sea safari’. The rest of the time he is back at the castle on the Ayrshire coast tending to the 110-acre estate.

It’s important to note this is no ordinary camping experience. Inspired by the high-end safari camps of Africa, the tepees are tall enough to stand in, with soft tartan rugs underfoot, a comfy bed and an enormous candelabra filled with tea lights. The camp also boasts piping hot showers and a resident chef who is on hand to prepare gourmet meals. Perched on the water’s edge, it’s one of the most secluded – and beautiful – corners of the planet.

Glenapp Castle sea safari boat

How did I get here? The answer, of course, is by boat . After a lavish night of wining and dining at Glenapp Castle, we were taken to Girvan – a small harbor town around 15 miles up the coast where a bright orange boat was waiting.

Specially designed for exploring the Scottish West Coast, the 42-foot vessel is equipped with two powerful engines for cruising along effortlessly at around 35 mph. You can either sit out on the deck or – when it gets too windy – shelter inside.

Things can get choppy, but we were in safe hands with the skippers, Sandy and Mia, at the helm. They know this part of the world immeasurably well – Sandy even has a flock of sheep that he grazes on the MacCormaig Isles. During our two-day trip, they were constantly pointing out wildlife – seals, porpoises and a minke whale were among the sea-dwelling creatures we spotted along the way (a quick warning: there are lots of midges so be sure to bring bug spray).

Glenapp Castle

Our first stop was Ailsa Craig – a plug of dense granite leftover from a long-extinct volcano. Over the years the tiny island has been used as a haven for religious dissenters, a smuggling base, and even a prison (some eerily deserted buildings remain). Today, though, it’s a bird sanctuary. After exploring by foot, Sandy took us to the island’s southwest cliffs where we were greeted by a cacophony of squarks and caws from the 70,000-strong colony of gannets, razorbills and puffins.

With so much to see, each ‘sea safari’ is specially tailored to guests’ interests. Among the most memorable moments on our trip were seeing a minke whale surface close to the boat, peering into a historic cave used as a hermit’s retreat by Saint Cormac in the 8 th century on the MacCormaig Isles, and spinning around in the Corryvreckan whirlpool that almost killed George Orwell (his dinghy was wrecked here in 1947 but he miraculously managed to escape unscathed).

The food was especially noteworthy. On our first night at Glenapp Castle, we were treated to a candle-lit meal in the opulent dining room, while at sea we enjoyed delicious picnics with chilled glasses of champagne . Evenings were spent sitting around the campfire, a gin and tonic or dram of whisky in hand.

As we left Jura on our final morning, we passed a group of seals lazily sunning themselves on the rocks. Mark Littlejohn stood on the shore waving us off. Few will get to experience the Hebrides like this; for those that do it will be a trip they never forget.

Glenapp Castle’s Hebridean Sea Safari starts from £8,000 (approx. $10,297) per person. Prices are based on a four-night/ five-day trip, with two nights at Glenapp Castle in a superior suite and two nights camping on Jura.

Introduction

When we think of going on a safari, our minds usually wander to the vast savannahs of Africa or the tropical rainforests of South America. But did you know that you can experience an incredible safari adventure right here in Scotland? Yes, you read that correctly! Scotland may not have elephants or lions, but it is home to a diverse array of wildlife and offers unique opportunities for a thrilling safari experience.

So, what exactly is a safari? Traditionally, a safari involved exploring the wild to observe and photograph large animals in their natural habitat. While that still holds true, a Scottish safari takes it a step further by immersing you in the stunning landscapes and magnificent wildlife that the country has to offer.

Why go on a safari in Scotland, you might ask? Well, besides its breathtaking beauty and rich cultural heritage, Scotland is teeming with an abundance of wildlife. From majestic red deer and elusive wildcats to playful otters and soaring eagles, there are plenty of incredible creatures just waiting to be discovered. Whether you are a nature enthusiast, an animal lover, or simply seeking a thrilling adventure, a Scottish safari will undoubtedly leave you in awe.

What sets Scotland apart from other safari destinations is its unique blend of rugged landscapes and diverse ecosystems. From picturesque highlands and ancient forests to scenic islands and dramatic coastlines, Scotland offers a rich tapestry of habitats for a wide variety of wildlife to thrive. With its vast expanses and relatively low population density, Scotland provides ample opportunities to spot some of its most iconic and elusive animals in their natural habitats.

As you embark on your Scottish safari, you will not only have the chance to encounter rare and fascinating creatures but also be surrounded by stunning scenery and immerse yourself in Scotland’s rich natural heritage. So, pack your bags, grab your binoculars, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure as we explore the incredible wildlife and popular safari destinations in Scotland.

What is a Safari?

When we think of a safari, we often picture open-top jeeps, vast savannahs, and exotic animals roaming freely. But what exactly is a safari? A safari is a Swahili word meaning “journey,” and it refers to an expedition to observe and experience wildlife in their natural habitats. While Africa may be the most famous safari destination, the concept of a safari can be applied to any region with diverse wildlife and unique landscapes.

A safari typically involves venturing into protected areas such as national parks, reserves, or conservation areas, where wildlife thrives. It provides an opportunity to witness animals in their natural habitats, behaving as they would without human interference. It offers a chance to observe their feeding patterns, social interactions, and daily routines, providing an unparalleled experience with nature.

Traditionally, a safari focused on big game species such as elephants, lions, rhinos, and leopards. However, modern safari experiences have evolved to include a broader range of wildlife, including birds, reptiles, and various mammal species. Some safaris even specialize in specific animal sightings, like birdwatching safaris or gorilla tracking expeditions, catering to the diverse interests of wildlife enthusiasts.

One of the main highlights of a safari is the opportunity to encounter wildlife up close, often from a safe distance. It allows for thrilling sightings of animals in their natural environment, capturing their behavior and interactions on camera. Whether it’s witnessing a lioness hunt, observing a herd of elephants at a watering hole, or spotting a leopard camouflaged in a tree, the thrill of these encounters is what makes a safari truly unforgettable.

While safaris are commonly associated with game drives in 4×4 vehicles, there are various other ways to experience wildlife in their habitats. Walking safaris allow travelers to explore on foot, providing a more intimate and immersive encounter with nature. Canoe safaris offer a unique perspective as you paddle through waterways, observing wildlife along riverbanks. And for those seeking a truly aerial adventure, hot air balloon safaris provide a breathtaking view of the landscape and its inhabitants from above.

Now that we have a better understanding of what a safari is, let’s delve into why Scotland is an excellent destination for this extraordinary wildlife experience.

1. Choose a Reputable Tour Operator: When selecting a safari tour, opt for a reputable and licensed operator that prioritizes safety, ethics, and sustainability. Look for companies that adhere to responsible wildlife viewing practices and have knowledgeable guides who can enhance your experience and ensure the welfare of the animals.

2. Follow Wildlife Viewing Etiquette: Respect the wildlife and their natural habitats by observing from a distance and avoiding any actions that could disturb or harm them. Keep noise levels to a minimum, stay on designated trails, and never approach or touch the animals. Remember, you are a guest in their home, and it’s essential to prioritize their well-being.

3. Be Prepared for the Weather: Scotland’s weather can be unpredictable, so come prepared with appropriate clothing and gear. Layer your clothing for varying temperatures, pack waterproof and windproof outerwear, and bring sturdy footwear suitable for walking and hiking. Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat to protect yourself from the elements.

4. Pack Binoculars and a Camera: A good pair of binoculars is essential for wildlife spotting, allowing you to observe animals from a distance without causing disturbance. Additionally, bring a camera with a zoom lens to capture those magical wildlife moments. Remember to respect the animals’ space and avoid using flash photography, which can startle or disorient them.

5. Respect Local Regulations: Familiarize yourself with any local regulations or guidelines regarding wildlife viewing and conservation areas. Follow the rules and comply with any restrictions or access limitations to protect the environment and wildlife habitats. These regulations are put in place to ensure the longevity of Scotland’s wilderness and its inhabitants.

6. Stay Hydrated and Carry Snacks: It’s important to stay hydrated while on a safari, especially if you’re spending long hours outdoors. Carry a reusable water bottle and fill it up regularly. Pack energy-boosting snacks like granola bars or trail mix to keep you nourished during your wildlife adventures.

7. Bring Essential Medications and First Aid Kit: If you have any specific medical conditions or require regular medications, be sure to bring an ample supply with you. Additionally, carry a basic first aid kit for minor injuries or discomforts that may arise during your safari. It’s better to be prepared for any unforeseen circumstances.

8. Respect Local Communities and their Customs: Scotland is home to numerous rural communities, often located near wildlife habitats and nature reserves. Respect the local residents and their customs, follow any community guidelines, and be mindful of noise pollution and littering. Engage with the local cultures respectfully and consider supporting local businesses and initiatives during your visit.

9. Stay Informed About Wildlife Safety: Some wildlife, such as ticks or certain venomous species, may pose potential risks. Familiarize yourself with the necessary precautions for encountering these risks, such as wearing appropriate clothing to protect against tick bites or being knowledgeable about how to respond if you encounter venomous creatures. Stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety and that of the wildlife.

10. Embrace the Unexpected: Keep in mind that wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, as animals are free-roaming and unpredictable. Be patient and embrace the unexpected. Remember that a safari is not only about specific species but also about immersing yourself in the beauty and tranquility of Scotland’s natural landscapes.

DUMBLE BUS – HIGHLAND COW AND WILDLIFE ADVENTURE

Take a  Highland Cow Safari  on the Dumble Bus , for a fun factual hands-on adventure for all ages on a purpose-built tractor and trailer ride, (which is fully weatherproof with comfy seats) around the scenic Dumble Farm, followed by tea/coffee and a slice of delicious homemade cake which is included in the price (please let us know if you have any specific food allergies or dietary requirements, we can usually cater for most).

Both our safaris start at the farm, where guests first get to meet and stroke our fussy, fluffy year old Highland calves.

The Dumble Bus Highland Cow Safari and Wildlife tour lasts approximately 1.5 hours, the Highlands, History and Habitats tour lasts about 2.5 hours. BYOB (Bring Your Own Binoculars!) If you have binoculars, we recommend you bring them to better see the wildlife.

Highland Cow Safari

Ride into the grassy meadows for a hands-on, interactive and educational tour. Get up close to the majestic Highland Cows and their adorable fluffy calves , there will be plenty of time to photograph these magnificent cattle with their dramatic horns, long flowing coats and cute dossens (fringes) tumbling over their faces. The knowledgeable Dumble Farm farmers will tell you facts about the breed, you can learn their names and all about their different personalities. The cows loved to be fed from the trailer, and there's often opportunities to stroke the soft fluffy calves from the door.

Water and wildlife go together, so Dumble Farm is going wet and wild with an extensive conservation project . In the new wetland area, you will discover how the very special way the Highland cows munch the grass is  creating the right habitat for declining bird species to successfully breed.

Hear the story of  Tiddy Mun , c hief spirit of the marshland, and how he was angered when the marshes were drained.

Children on the family tour can record what they have seen on our spotting sheets ,  with a Highland Coo Multi Colour Pen worth £2.95  which they can keep.

Highlands, History and Habitats Tour

Highlands, History and Habitats is a longer whole farm tour for adults only (over 16's). It includes everything on our Highland safari, plus you will learn about the history of Dumble Farm , how the village of Arram was home to people since the Bronze Age . Whilst studying for her archaeology degree, Farmer Fi oversaw the excavations of an Iron Age and Romano-British settlement site on Dumble Farm, handle some of the artefacts and learn about how people were living here over 2000 years ago. Travel through an area known as Arram Carrs, once a deep marshy bog steeped in superstition. Until the late 18th Century, impoverished tenants of the mighty Lord Percy at Leconfield castle, relied on the marsh lands; some supplemented their income by collecting a certain high-quality rush for the Lord’s personal use, this rush was known as the Dumble . Listen to the story of the farm itself, how the family had to rethink the way they were farming, make big changes and diversify because of climate change and the pressures on agriculture. Visit the scenic pond, woodland and flower meadows. Here, along with lots of new trees, hedges and nesting boxes, we are providing habitats for many of our much-loved native wildlife which we'll talk about throughout the tour.

Feel free to ask lots of questions, but above all enjoy the lovely Hull Valley countryside , see its wonderful wildlife and of course the adorable Highland cows.

Dumble Deluxe Tour!

This private, three-hour, hands-on tour is the only experience where you get to see all the animals here at Dumble Farm!   This tour offers an educational and interactive experience learning about our family’s farming life, and   can be tailored around your individual expectations . One of the farmers, Will, James or Fi, will provide you with a unique opportunity to find out what life is like for a Hull Valley farmer. Learn about our history and conservation project, discuss sustainable food production, plus of course meet lots of our furry four-legged friends . After your introduction you will be taken to meet, stroke, groom and feed the animals close to the farm, the young Highlands , affectionate, retired dairy cuddle cows , cheeky goats and alpacas. You will then either walk or be driven in our farm vehicle through our wildflower fields to the ‘water and woodland’ area , here we are creating a mosaic of habitats, where we will look for insects, birds, amphibians or flora, dependent on the time of year. Then into the wet grassland area that attracts many overwintering wading birds , see how we are developing habitats for these declining species, hear about the history of the area and the way the farm has changed over time. Get up close to our main Highland fold with their young calves (depending on the time of year), with an opportunity to feed them . You can find out all about these striking cows with their characterful personalities and see in action the positive environmental role that grass-fed livestock plays in increasing biodiversity. We will have refreshments at a suitable viewpoint and there will be lots of opportunity for photos . Private Tours are for up to three adults, with interests in Highland cattle and livestock farming, environment and ecology. We recommend suitable footwear and clothing for uneven ground and open countryside.

The Dumble Deluxe Tour is

£175 for 2 people and £225 for 3 people (over16's only),

bookable Mondays-Fridays

and lasts 2.5-3 hours

Dumble deluxe tours are currently unavailable to book due to extensive flooding, sign up to our mailing list to receive notification when they recommence (probably not until springtime).

Scottish Seafood Trail

Enjoy fresh seafood on our unique self-drive tour

Best Time To Go

Prices from, no of nights.

  • Availability

The very freshest seafood, with cossetting accommodation and fun experiences in this newly updated holiday.

Our Scottish Seafood Trail is designed specifically for lovers of the freshest seafood and shellfish. This holiday includes unique and authentic experiences on a week-long, self-drive tour of some of the most scenic locations on the west coast of Scotland .

Revel in a hands-on seafood cookery demo with a hugely experienced chef (followed by lunch, of course); take a boat trip with a creel fisherman as he hauls in langoustines and brown crabs, then savour the day’s catch with a memorable lunch on the shorefront. Accommodation is in four carefully-chosen small hotels and inns, in fabulous lochside locations, and all boasting great reputations for their food.

  • McKinlay Kidd

Holiday Details

Day one – arduaine, argyll.

Start your Scottish Seafood Trail with a scenic drive along the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, through ‘the Arrochar Alps’ and over the Rest-and-be-Thankful pass. Along the way, stop off at the world-famous Loch Fyne Oyster Bar and Restaurant in Cairndow, and perhaps indulge in a fantastic seafood platter for two, taking your time to enjoy the lochside ambience as much as the shellfish delicacies. It’s then just a short drive to the picture-postcard village of Inveraray, home to an iconic castle – a great spot for a wander – before carrying on through ancient Kilmartin Glen to your first base in the Argyllshire hamlet of Arduaine (pron. Ar-doony).

Your Hotel in Arduaine

Perched in a simply gorgeous waterside location, your family owned hotel by Loch Melfort is the perfect place to start your holiday. The 17-acre grounds of garden and beach invite an evening stroll when you may be lucky enough to feel like you have the place all to yourself. Treat yourself to dinner in the fine-dining restaurant one evening, perhaps trying the informal bistro the next; each proudly presents a menu created from the very finest west-of-Scotland ingredients served amidst quite staggering views.

Day Two – A Seafood Cookery Demo and Lunch

A day to relax in this romantic location, perhaps taking a short stroll to nearby Arduaine Gardens, one of west of Scotland’s finest. At lunchtime, prepare for a cookery demonstration from the hugely experienced chef, after which you’ll be ready to tuck in to the dishes specially created for you.

Day Three – On the Shores of Loch Linnhe

It’s just an hour or so’s drive to your next base, for one night in this stunning corner of Argyllshire. Take your time to discover some of the scenic highlights along the way, then, at your hotel, perhaps cross the foreshore and take the short crossing on the tiny foot-ferry to the enigmatic island of Lismore. Here, you can rent a bicycle and discover its 13 th -century church, Iron-age broch and ruined castle.

Your Hotel on Loch Linnhe

Originally the home of Loch Linnhe’s Pier Master, this historic restaurant, with its adjacent modern residence, really is a special place to contemplate the dramatic beauty of the west coast.  Mouthwatering langoustines and lobster are kept fresh off the end of the pier before being served to you in the cosy conviviality of one of Argyll’s finest restaurants.  As you contemplate the sunset over the distant Morvern hills, you may be lucky enough to glimpse otters and seals.

Day Four – North to Wester Ross

Your next destination is in one of the most scenically beautiful and secluded locations in the whole of Scotland, around three hours’ drive away, in the wild and rugged area of Wester Ross.

A fantastic day on the road awaits as you head through some of the country’s most dramatic scenery. Travel along the length of Loch Linnhe, past Ben Nevis and in to the southern tip of the Great Glen. Soon, navigate vast Glen Garry on its superb driving route, passing atmospheric Eilean Donan Castle on the way towards Kyle of Lochalsh, spearing further north around Loch Carron and in to the wilderness of Torridon.

Your Hotel in Shieldaig

Converted from a row of white-washed fishing cottages, the small, family-run inn overlooks an idyllic loch which reflects a tiny island covered in Scots Pines – if you’re lucky, you may witness one of the west coast’s spectacular sunsets. The charming restaurant, adorned with driftwood sculptures, is a fitting setting for the imaginative dishes that are served each evening.  The chef makes extensive use of the local produce to create an ever-changing menu of fresh fish, shellfish, and top-quality meat and game.

Day Five – Shellfish Safari

This morning you drive north towards Gairloch for a unique experience, perhaps the highlight of your trip.  You will join a local fisherman on his working boat as he gathers his creels. It’s hard work bringing in the catch, less so for you watching! He will happily share stories and information about the local area as well as his profession. Once back on dry land you’ll enjoy a seafood lunch from some of the harvest, cooked for you by the loch shore.  You’ll struggle to taste seafood as fresh as this anywhere in the world.

Day Six – Further north to Achiltibuie

Another day of driving on some of our favourite and most scenic routes today. Take in the view at the head of Loch Maree on the way to Gairloch and travel onwards to Poolewe, home to a staggering Highland garden and the moving story of the WWII Russian Arctic Convoys. Continue around Loch Broom, stopping for lunch of superb seafood at what’s possibly the UK’s most acclaimed street food shack. From Ullapool, it’s a short hop through more superb vistas to your hotel in the hamlet of Achiltibuie.

Your hotel in Achiltibuie

Long-established but having recently changed hands, your hotel in Achiltibuie is a romantic gem, for many years a destination for the most stylish and discerning city clientele. Inside you’ll find a lively pub and more genteel lounge, as well as a much-acclaimed fine-dining restaurant. Here, guests are invited to dine on the very finest local produce while viewing the Summer Isles that appear to hover in the mouth of Loch Broom, changing colour and texture with the weather. Rooms are simple and elegant, a theme reflect throughout the hotel.

Day Seven – a day to unwind or explore

No-one would blame you for staying away from the car today, relaxing with a stroll along the coast and a later beer or dram in the bar. Or you could set out to discover some of the most jaw-dropping locations in the UK – we’ll provide all the information you need to make the most of your time.

Day Eight – Onward Journey Home

Your route will take you first to Inverness then south through the Highlands.

Thoroughly enjoyed the holiday - fabulous part of the country.
The highlight was undoubtedly the creel boat fishing trip - and to get to eat what was caught was fantastic!
I loved not just the seafood tie-ins - it was the fact that I would never have been able to assemble the trip by myself that made it special.
