Their trip is unrecognizable from what they booked, but they're still on the hook for it

regent cruises reddit

Editor's note: After publication of this story, Regent Seven Seas Cruises offered the Pachecos a future cruise credit worth 25% of their cruise-only fare.

Diane and Al Pacheco spent years planning their cruise . But just days before departure, their itinerary almost completely changed.

The Scottsdale, Arizona, couple booked a Nov. 10 cruise with Regent Seven Seas Cruises from Istanbul to Dubai, with stops in Haifa and Ashdod in Israel, Aqaba, Jordan, Luxor, Egypt and more. “This was the trip of a lifetime,” said Diane, 69.

But in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war , Regent canceled the sailing’s Israel stops in mid-October. “It was extremely disappointing, but we understood, obviously,” Diane said. But they were notified of more extreme changes on Nov. 2, just over a week before their departure date. The 22-day cruise aboard Seven Seas Navigator now includes fewer than half of its original stops.

After contacting Regent directly and through their travel agent, Diane said the luxury line declined their request for a future cruise credit (their travel agent declined USA TODAY’s request for comment, citing client confidentiality). Regent also did not offer a refund or other compensation, leaving the couple on the hook for around $35,000. “We paid for things we don’t get to do,” she said. “That, to me, is unacceptable.”

Regent did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

The contracts passengers agree to when they book a ticket allow cruise lines to change ports as needed without owing them compensation. But passengers may not always be left empty-handed. Here’s what to know.

Why do cruise lines change itineraries?

Cruise lines primarily change itineraries because of acts of nature such as storms or “diplomatic issues,” according to Rusty Pickett, a travel adviser and owner of Shellback Cruises.

They also heed the U.S. State Department’s travel warnings, he added. There are multiple advisories in place in and around Israel, and the State Department issued a “worldwide caution” for Americans overseas last month.

While many cruise lines altered their itineraries in the wake of the war, Pickett stressed that it’s generally not a common occurrence. “It’s very rare,” he said.

What can I do if my cruise itinerary changes?

That depends. If you learn of the changes before the final payment due date, you can generally cancel and get a refund or reschedule. But once that day has passed, passengers “are limited in their options because they're under penalty,” Pickett said.

Regent’s cancellation policy requires passengers booked on cruises 15 nights or more, like the Pachecos, to pay the entire fare if they cancel 75 days or less before their sail date.

But while cruise lines may not owe passengers money because of an itinerary change, they sometimes offer it as a goodwill gesture. They could give guests onboard credit, for instance – though Pickett said that’s more likely if the cruise is already underway when its course is altered.

Cruise lines also typically work to replace canceled ports of call and automatically refund shore excursions booked there.

In cases where ports are changed ahead of a sailing, they may offer some leniency, depending on the line and their terms and conditions. “They typically are reasonably flexible on allowing the client to rebook if it's something that's beyond everybody's control,” he said.

But other travelers have faced difficulties in recent weeks. A number of guests sailing with Oceania Cruises – also part of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. – struggled to get refunds or credits , even after their cruises became nearly unrecognizable.

Pickett recommended working with a travel adviser who can advocate for clients in such situations.

Does travel insurance cover cruise itinerary changes?

Some cruise insurance plans may have inconvenience benefits, according to Meghan Walch, Director of Product at InsureMyTrip.

“This could include benefits for itinerary changes by the cruise line that occur after your departure that prevent the traveler from participating in a pre-paid event that was scheduled on the original itinerary,” she said in an email.

Trip cancellation or interruption coverage may be available on some plans, as well, and help reimburse nonrefundable trip costs in case of a delay, cancellation or interruption because of weather or another covered event. “With this being said, it is important to read the details of the policy and be aware of any coverage requirements such as what events are covered and the number of hours the delay must last,” Walch added.

Your cruise was canceled: What to do next

She noted that itinerary changes for Israel on upcoming cruises would likely not be covered, partly because it’s a “known issue.”

Faced with the prospect of losing their money, the Pachecos decided to take the cruise, but Diane said they plan to cancel another Regent sailing they have booked in May. “I'm upset because I can't believe a company would treat us this way and not do anything,” she said at the time of the interview.

Shortly after, Diane said, Regent offered them a $500 onboard credit.

Which cruise are you on? We are on the Voyager on Mar 9. Don't have our flts yet, so can't even start.

"the inside cabin" on South America category has a blog which could help.

Do not attach your real bank statement. Open a new bank account at different bank and deposit $2k. Then get them to print statement to attach. Then transfer most of the money out of the account. Fraud is rampant in Brazil. Many people are setting up a “travel” account to use for Visa purposes since counties are requiring US and Canadian citizens for bank info.

We are also waiting for our flights for our March 19 sailing on Voyager. We were also going to use Visa Central. Doesn’t sound promising.  Viking is recommending Genvisa.com. I will follow their board to see if they are having any luck.

Lots of posts on the rollcall for the Voyager itinerary that precedes my 2 February itin. They are all commenting on difficulty/impossibility of doing the on-line Brazil visa. Well, maybe one poster was successful. I embark in BsAs so haven’t been reading those posts diligently.

Good luck to all!

It certainly looks like a lot of hassle. My Jan 12th Voyager TA to Rio is wide open cabin wise - wonder if the visa situation is anything to do with it.

Lucky for us we are in the UK so have no issues with a visa.

I broken-heartedly and with a few tears cancelled my March 9 Voyager cruise over this issue.  My financial advisor advised me not to send this info to Brazil.  This may be extreme, but I was truly uncomfortable doing so and did not want to take on the stressful application process that so many seem to be experiencing.  I hope all of you get good results and have a wonderful cruise.  I will be following along in spirit.  This was to be our fist Regent cruise and I hope I can rebook another in the near future.

annmarz - I'm very sorry you had to cancel this cruise.  I can understand your decision, however.

I'm not sure why Regent has not stepped in quickly and proactively to offer more hands-on and immediate assistance to their booked customers.  "What kind of assistance should Regent be offering" (some on this board will undoubtedly say)?  I have no idea...but I'm not the company (Regent) that's selling an upcoming itinerary which includes a country that "my paid customers" are finding impossible/impractical to get a visa for!  And of course, it's all once again happening after the "final payment date"!

I would have thought that long before now, Regent would have "identified" this major stumbling block that is adversely impacting their customers and would have rushed in some "staff experts" and resources to adress "the problem" and would already have a "fix" to help their customers out and make things easier for their customers!

Once again...It all gets back to the question of "when" (exactly) does the "luxury cruise experience" actually begin?

This is an interesting thread.  We had a cruise through SE Asia in 2019 that included a post-cruise tour to Xian, China.  Since group tours could get a group visa through the tour agency we did not alert on the necessity to get a visa, nor did Regent inform us we needed a visa.  So, long story short, we had to secure a visa in early January for a mid-February cruise.  This involved an exacting application that would be rejected with one mistake, sending passports to the nearest Chinese embassy, and praying all would be resolved and passport returned by the date we would fly out.  We managed, but we talked to other guests who cancelled this once in a lifetime trip because someone in Miami dropped the ball.

Regent could not have done anything ‘long before now’ because the Brazil requirements just came out a little over a week ago, and no one knew what they would be asking for. The general assumption is that an e-Visa is less complicated than a consular visa, so I am sure that everyone was surprised. I agree that now they should be proactive in helping their customers.

Interestingly, we are on the South America Grand Voyage right now that goes to Brazil in January and there has been no mention of any visa requirement from Regent. It does not concern us since we have the previous 10 year visas that are still valid, but I am interested to see what happens.

Absolutely!

We may have been on your post-cruise to Xian (February 2019??)

On Cruise Critic Roll Call one very knowledgeable woman said we needed a visa for China for this. I called Regent multiple times (we were using a Regent TA at that time) and was always told that we did NOT because we were on a tour.

The woman was adamant we did.  This question went on until late December.

This post tour was most of the reason we booked the cruise.

The problem was that we were going to Egypt in January and only had three weeks between that trip and leaving for Asia.

The wonderful Cruise Critic Roll Call lady helped us (by email) get everything ready for visa - it was complicated!! The day we returned from Egypt, we over-nighted our application and passport to a service with expedited fees.

Got passport with visa back in time!

So so glad we did!  On the day we were leaving for Egypt, Regent FINALLY sent us an email that we did indeed need a visa.

We could never have completed that application and sent passport in time, expedited or not.

We would have missed by far the best tour we ever took. Not only were the terra cotta warriors incredible, the whole tour was terrific.

Lesson learned - always check the state dept. site for what you need and not rely on TAs, cruise line, etc.

Oh my. You are the wonderful Cruise Critic Roll Call lady!

Thanks again!

If anyone can get to Xian - please go.

But get your visa first.

This is wonderful, thank you!   Regent should send this to everyone and pay you royalties.

From what I've seen and heard so far (actually, from what I've NOT seen or heard...) Regent seems to be totally/corporately dis-engaged from this entire issue that's now being faced by their customers at the last moment.  I'm not "bashing" here.  I'm just totally surprised/disappointed that Regent (remember - the Luxury Cruise Line) doesn't seem to be actively reaching out to help (provide assistance, advice, or guidance) to their affected customers??

Can you take care of this process by taking all documents to Brazilian embassy? This seems like a very complicated procedure…

2 hours ago, CardowMD said: Can you take care of this process by taking all documents to Brazilian embassy? This seems like a very complicated procedure…

First of all you need a consulate or perhaps an embassy will work as well.  Believe the only embassy is DC but, many consulates around the US.  About 10 years ago we needed a Brazil visa for a world cruise.  Luckily we have a consulate here in Houston.  Filled out the forms, went in and in less than an hour we had the visas in our passports.

Hopefully you can get a true visa at a local consulate rather than the impossible evisa more easily

The Frustration continues...Regent has been NO help except to give us the Visa Central contact costing us additional, but that would be okay if we had a positive result. Finally after 5 different uploads and many hours back and forth with our TA and Visa Central (not that cooperative) my husband, we think, has a visa.  I have been disqualified again as I didn't have round trip air!!! and was using my husband's bank statement. This alone is disconcerting....we now have, our bankers alerted even though our bank statements had all numbers crossed out.  It is so ridiculous. I am disappointed that Regent hasn't been more proactive. We would not book, if we had known all this harassment.

I pray this trip will be worth it. I normally have a positive outlook but I have lost my sense of humor.!!!

Our local consulate does not seem to answer their phone.  Was thinking of traveling to the consulate in LA, but we have a trip planned for the Christmas week, and we have a Regent cruise in February, then the cruise to Brazil in March.  Hopefully, we have enough time to get this damned visa.  Otherwise, it may just be time to give up and cancel.

ETA: And this cruise is definitely not worth it to me, as I am in a wheelchair, and the majority of the ports in Brazil are not accessible to me, so I will be spending most of the Brazilian part of the cruise enjoying the amenities on Voyager.  This is beyond ridiculous at this point that I am being made to jump through this many hoops for a country that I will barely be seeing.

Luckily, I live near DC, but no way am I handing over any financial information for a VIsa…

We still have not be able to get our EVisas for Brazil. We have been uploading and reloading trying

to please the POWERS that be. Regent has been NO help. I thought that this was a Luxury Cruise line and that being a frequent cruiser with them for over 20 years would have some pull but they have washed their hands of this matter!!!

My husband and I are curious as to whether anyone has been able to obtain the EVisa!!

We would love to hear if so. We have trip insurance but the lack of the required visa is not a reason for reimbursement!!!

And just what do you think Regent or any cruise line for that matter should or could do with a foreign government to get your visa issued

this is extremely important and sad  but appears Brazil is simply reacting to something the US did and there is no company in the entire world that could help those of you not able to get your visas issued.

A possible ray of sunshine….

An acquaintance of my wife is departing on a world cruise (not Regent) January 2 that goes up the Amazon. Of 2,000 passengers about 3 have their visas. Apparently the cruise line has agreed to let passengers aboard if they have at least submitted the paperwork to Brazil. If that’s correct maybe Regent will do the same?

I have to get on a flight to Rio to get on the Regent Voyager and Delta will not allow boarding without the visa so only hope is that Brazil gets the visas issued!  Day 5 and still under check!

I did read that the Brazil government is aware of the problems and they may be considering delaying the visa requirement - they definitely have a problem and with Christmas approaching you know that is just going to increase delays.  Plus Carnival is huge and I would think they really don’t need cancellations.

How much does an alaska cruise cost in 2024.

Compare the prices of these eight voyages before booking your Alaska cruise.

Alaska Cruise Cost

The Holland American Line Noordam ship in Skagway, Alaska.

Courtesy of Holland America Line

If you're planning a cruise to Alaska this year, you may be enticed by low prices (in the hundreds) for a weeklong cruise. However, it's important to know that those fares are just the beginning of the cost for the entire trip.

Typically, the lowest advertised prices with mainstream cruise lines don't include taxes and port fees, specialty dining costs, alcoholic or nonalcoholic drinks, shore excursions , Wi-Fi access, gratuities and other expenses. On top of that, bargain fares usually refer to inside cabins with no windows. In a picturesque, bucket list destination like Alaska, you will realistically want a room with a private balcony so you can take in the spectacular scenery from the comfort of your room.

When to cruise to Alaska depends on what you're interested in seeing and doing during your vacation , but summer is typically the best time to visit The Great Land. Between mid-May and mid-July, you can experience 24 hours of daylight. This period is also an optimal time for wildlife viewing; you can see bears feasting on salmon, humpback whales and orcas, furry baby moose and thousands of nesting bald eagles. Cruise lines often reserve their lowest prices for sailings early or late in the Alaska cruising season , but it's still possible to find deals in the middle of the summer.

With all of this in mind, we've listed both the lowest interior cabin fares and the average total costs for a balcony stateroom across eight popular cruise lines for weeklong itineraries in June 2024. (Note: All fares quoted are per person, double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Prices were accurate at the time of writing.)

Find your perfect cruise

Holland America Line

The Holland America Line Noordam in Yakutat Bay.

Holland America Line's 2024 Alaska season extends from April to September; in 2024, there are more than 60 cruise-only voyages and cruisetours (combined land and sea packages). With the exception of one 28-day journey, itineraries range from seven to 18 days.

Average starting price (per person)

This June, Holland America 's lowest-priced itinerary is the 7-Day Glacier Discovery Southbound voyage departing from Whittier, Alaska, on June 23, 2024, aboard Nieuw Amsterdam . The voyage features scenic cruising in Hubbard Glacier, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and the Inside Passage. You'll also stop in the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, before disembarking in Vancouver, British Columbia . The starting price is $409 per person for an inside cabin, and veranda staterooms start at $2,114 per person (cruise-only fare).

Starting price (per person)

For this sailing, there is a $291 charge per person for taxes, fees and port expenses. Specialty dining, alcoholic drinks (and many nonalcoholic beverages, such as bottled water and specialty coffees), excursions, Wi-Fi access, gratuities and some other amenities cost extra.

Instead of paying for these extras individually, you can book Holland America's "Have It All" package. It covers one dinner at a specialty restaurant; one shore excursion (up to $100 per guest); a signature beverage package (for drinks up to $11 each) and a Wi-Fi package. For a limited time, you can also receive a $200 onboard credit per stateroom. A veranda stateroom plus the package starts at $2,569 per person.

If you purchase the "Have It All" package with the veranda stateroom, select the location of your cabin yourself (an additional $90), add in the port taxes and fees ($291) and include crew gratuities at $17 per guest, per day for non-suite staterooms ($119), the total cost is about $3,000 per person. You'll still need to budget for drinks that cost more than $11 each; bottles of wine with dinner; additional evenings of specialty dining; other shore excursions and miscellaneous expenses.

Total cost: From $3,069 per person

Princess Cruises

The Crown Princess in Haines, Alaska.

Courtesy of Princess Cruises

Princess is offering 14 unique itineraries and 68 cruisetours during the 2024 Alaska season, which runs from May to September. Itineraries range from a seven-day cruise to a 17-day escorted cruisetour.

Princess's lowest-priced cruise in June is the 7-Day Voyage of the Glaciers with Glacier Bay (Northbound) from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Anchorage (Whittier), Alaska , on Grand Princess. Embarking on June 5, 2024, the sailing includes scenic cruising in College Fjord and Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, a day at sea and stops in the coastal towns of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway in Alaska. Interior cabins start at $448 per person, while staterooms with a balcony start at $1,698 per person. If you select your own balcony stateroom (instead of letting the cruise line place you), the cost is $1,791 per person.

Additional fees (taxes, gratuities, etc.)

Taxes, fees and port expenses for this cruise will run you $284 per person. At the $1,791 rate, you will be in the Princess Standard fare class, which includes the ships' complimentary dining venues, entertainment and the MedallionClass experience.

You can upgrade to Princess Plus (starting at $2,211 for a balcony room) to add Wi-Fi access (one device per guest); gratuities; a beverage package (covering drinks up to $15 each); two fitness classes per cruise; two premium desserts per day; two casual dining meals and more. For additional amenities, such as Wi-Fi access for up to four devices per guest; a higher-level beverage package (for drinks up to $20 each); two specialty dining meals per guest; unlimited exercise classes and more, opt for the Princess Premier package. Balcony rooms under this category start at $2,351 per guest.

If you purchase the Princess Premier package with the balcony room, the total cost with port taxes and fees is a little more than $2,600 per person – and the pricing is nearly all-inclusive. This package may also include free cruise fare for third and fourth guests traveling in the same stateroom. You will still need to budget for shore excursions; note that over-the-top experiences like flightseeing, helicopter and dog sledding tours, and scenic rides on the historic White Pass and Yukon Route Railway can get pricey.

Total cost: From $2,635 per person

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line offers one of the longest Alaska cruising seasons. In 2024, there are 44 scheduled cruise and cruisetour itineraries between April and October, ranging from seven to 18 days.

The June 3, 2024, sailing on Norwegian Jewel is Norwegian Cruise Line 's least expensive Alaska cruise that month, starting at $449 per person for an inside cabin. In comparison, a balcony cabin starts at $1,879 per person. The itinerary – Alaska: Hubbard Glacier & Skagway – embarks from Seward, Alaska, and includes scenic sea days cruising Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage, plus stops in the ports of Icy Strait Point, Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan (Ward Cove) in Alaska, before disembarking in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The line's ongoing "Free At Sea" deal is included in the price and features an unlimited open bar, free specialty dining (up to $180 for the first two guests in the stateroom), a discount of $50 per excursion and complimentary Wi-Fi access (a savings of up to $200).

Open bar and specialty dining gratuities in the package are approximately $175 per person. Taxes, fees and port expenses are about $302 per person. You'll also need to include the additional $20 per person, per day service charge ($140 for the seven-day voyage).

If you book the balcony stateroom at $1,879 per person, which includes the "Free At Sea" package, and add in the taxes and port fees, dining and beverage gratuities and the daily service charge for the crew, the total cost for the cruise is around $2,500 per person. Remaining costs for shore excursions, specialty dining over $180, additional Wi-Fi usage, gratuities and other miscellaneous costs are not included in the "Free At Sea" package.

Total cost: From $2,496 per person

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International's 2024 Alaska cruise season extends from April to September; there are 50 scheduled cruise-only and land-and-sea tours. Combined pre- and post-cruise tours last up to 13 nights, and cruise-only itineraries last between six to eight nights.

For the lowest fare in June, sail from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia, on a seven-night cruise aboard Radiance of the Seas on June 7, 2024. The inside cabin fare starts at $438 per person. A balcony stateroom starts at $2,877 per person (to select your own room). This voyage cruises around Alaska's Hubbard Glacier, sails the Inside Passage in Canada and stops in Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan in Alaska.

The guaranteed balcony price at $2,877 is for a smaller stateroom; you can select a larger cabin for a higher cost. Taxes, fees and port expenses for the cruise are $389 per person.

The total cost for the balcony stateroom, port taxes and fees, and gratuities ($18 per person, per day) for this Royal Caribbean cruise is about $3,400 per person. This price does not include extras like specialty dining, shore excursions, beverage packages or Wi-Fi access, so you will need to budget extra to cover those expenses.

Total cost: From $3,392 per person

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line has 19 five- to nine-night itineraries for the 2024 Alaska season, which runs from May to September.

The lowest price for a seven-night Alaska cruise in June with Disney Cruise Line is the June 3, 2024, voyage on Disney Wonder . The price for an inside cabin starts at approximately $3,472 for two guests, which includes taxes, fees and port expenses. In contrast, the fare for a guaranteed veranda stateroom starts at about $6,482 for two guests (including the additional fees); at this rate, Disney will select your specific cabin.

This round-trip sailing embarks from Vancouver, British Columbia. You'll begin your journey with a day at sea, then glacier viewing at Stikine Icecap in Alaska. Guests will stop in Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan in Alaska before another sea day and disembarkation in Vancouver.

Guests staying in regular stateroom accommodations will have gratuities of about $15 per person, per night. Once you add that in, you're looking at a cost of close to $6,600 per room (based on double occupancy) – or around $3,300 per person, if you split it. This price covers the cruise fare, taxes and port fees, the complimentary dining venues, onboard entertainment and gratuities for the crew.

You will need to budget extra for port adventures, beverages, and meals at adults-only venues like the Cadillac Lounge and Italian-themed Palo. The line offers Wi-Fi packages for an additional fee, which you can select once on board. You will also need to pay extra for alcoholic beverages, and there is an 18% gratuity added to bar and beverage services.

Total cost: From $6,587 per room (double occupancy)

Carnival Cruise Line

The Carnival Miracle in Alaska.

Carnival Cruise Line's 2024 Alaska season runs from April through September, and there are 16 itineraries that range from seven to 14 days.

The lowest Alaska fare in June is $814 per person for the June 4, 2024, voyage aboard Carnival Spirit . The seven-day round-trip itinerary departing from Seattle, Washington , includes one day at sea, cruising in Tracy Arm Fjord and stops in the Alaska port towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, plus Victoria, British Columbia. A guaranteed balcony room without an obstructed view starts at $1,579 per person.

Taxes, fees and port expenses for this cruise are about $313 per person. If you'd like Wi-Fi access, you can purchase the Social Wi-Fi Plan starting at approximately $15 per person, per day. The higher level Value Wi-Fi Plan costs about $20 per person, per day, while the Premium Wi-Fi Plan comes in at around $21 per person, per day.

A nonalcoholic beverage package, Bottomless Bubbles, starts at around $10 per adult and around $7 per child each day. For nonalcoholic beverages and select alcoholic drinks (up to $20 each), purchase the Cheers package. It starts at about $60 per person, per day, but you can save 10% if you purchase the package before you sail. With Cheers, you'll also receive a discount on bottles of wine (plus other perks). Gratuities cost $16 per person, per day, in a regular stateroom. Restaurants like the Mexican-inspired BlueIguana Cantina and Guy's Burger Joint are complimentary.

When you add up the price of the balcony stateroom, port taxes and fees, the Value package for Wi-Fi access, the Cheers beverage package and gratuities, you're looking at around $2,600 per person for this Carnival Cruise Line itinerary. In addition to those expenses, you'll have to budget extra funds for shore excursions, specialty dining and some other amenities.

Total cost: From $2,564 per person

Silversea Cruises

The Silver Nova lit up at night.

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises is offering 35 Alaska voyages between May and September 2024. The shortest itinerary is seven days and the longest itinerary is 16 days.

The lowest-priced Alaska cruise with Silversea in June is the June 27, 2024, seven-day sailing aboard Silver Muse from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Seward, Alaska. The intimate 596-guest ship will visit Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point, Skagway and Valdez in Alaska – and complete two days of scenic cruising – before disembarking in Seward.

The all-inclusive port-to-port fare starts at $4,350 per person for a Classic Veranda Suite (the most affordable suite category with a balcony). For a room with a window instead of a balcony, book a Vista Suite starting at $3,350 per person.

Silversea's all-inclusive fares include luxurious suite accommodations, Champagne upon arrival, butler service and other perks. The pricing covers port taxes and fees; complimentary gourmet dining; all beverages, including Champagne, wine, beer and premium spirits; and gratuities. You'll also receive personalized, attentive service with a nearly one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio, and at least one included shore excursion in every port. Complimentary excursions in Skagway include a ride on the White Pass Scenic Railway, a visit to a sled dog and musher's camp and the Chilkoot Trail Hike & Float Adventure. Many of the included excursions with Silversea are quite costly on other lines.

There are no additional fees with the all-inclusive fare. However, you might incur additional personal expenses if you choose to order a fancy bottle of wine with dinner or book an extreme shore excursion adventure, like flightseeing over the glaciers.

Total cost: $4,550 per person (all-inclusive)

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas' 22 Alaska cruises in 2024 sail between May and September and last seven to 14 nights.

The 2-for-1 all-inclusive fares include a luxury veranda suite with a welcome bottle of Champagne and a fresh fruit arrangement. You'll also have an in-suite minibar, free valet laundry service and other upscale amenities. In addition, the fare includes a selection of free unlimited shore excursions; free unlimited beverages with fine wines and spirits; prepaid gratuities; complimentary specialty restaurants; unlimited Wi-Fi access and more.

There are no additional expenses on this Regent Seven Seas Cruises voyage – unless you choose a shore excursion that comes with an added cost or purchase a special bottle of wine at dinner.

Total cost: $6,599 per person (all-inclusive)

Bottom line

The low base fares for Alaska cruises on larger cruise lines may grab your attention, but as you click through to see what's included and make your booking, you'll find additional costs on nearly every page.

Before making a reservation, be sure to read the fine print and find out exactly what's included (and not included) in your cruise fare. You may find that booking an all-inclusive rate with a luxury line offers a better value – an option that you may never have considered unless you compared the total price of each cruise.

Do cruise ships have Wi-Fi? A line-by-line guide to internet access at sea

Gwen Pratesi

Do cruise ships have Wi-Fi? Yes, but internet access on cruise ships is both better and worse than you may expect. If you're headed on a cruise vacation and want to stay in touch with family and friends — or stream movies and music on board the ship — it is possible to stay fully connected while at sea. But if you think the connectivity will be similar to a hotel, you'll need to adjust your expectations. Connectivity can be slow and spotty, although cruise lines are working to change that.

Ships rely on satellites for their internet connections at sea. The strength of the connection depends on several factors, including where you are in the world and the weather. On many lines, certain locations — such as public spaces near the center of the ship — tend to have better connectivity than other places (like your cabin).

Cruise lines are quickly adopting new technologies to make internet access more reliable — and more affordable. Royal Caribbean Group recently announced that it will start using SpaceX's Starlink, a quickly expanding satellite network with download speeds of 50 Mbps (megabits per second) to 250 Mbps and upload speeds of 10 to 20 Mbps.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Here, I'll give an overview of what to expect from internet offerings on cruise ships, as well as a line-by-line look at the plans and pricing available on your next cruise vacation.

What types of Wi-Fi plans do cruise lines offer?

Larger mainstream cruise lines typically have several plans available for purchase, with the cheaper plans only supporting email and texting and the pricier plans allowing streaming and Wi-Fi calling. Most upscale and luxury cruise lines offer a complimentary basic Wi-Fi plan that you can upgrade if you need a faster connection.

Before purchasing a plan, consider how much time you'll be online, how many devices you need to connect (a smartphone, tablet and a laptop?) and how much speed you'll need. If all you want to do is check emails or send texts, you may not need to spend additional money on an upgraded plan at all. Most cruise lines, but not all of them, let you use a one-device plan across multiple devices as long as you're only logged in to one at a time.

Note that you do not need a cruise ship Wi-Fi plan to access the free services — such as ordering food or checking the daily schedule — on a cruise line's app.

Pro tips for using cruise ship Wi-Fi

regent cruises reddit

Before booking your cruise, look for promotions and deals that include basic Wi-Fi. If you can't get cruise ship internet included, don't wait to purchase your internet package until you're on board: It's usually less expensive to purchase Wi-Fi packages before sailing. Buying a package for the entire cruise is typically a better deal than the daily rate.

Keep your phone on airplane mode when you're on the ship to avoid roaming charges and other fees. Satellite roaming fees are much higher than you realize.

Related: Can you use your cellphone on a cruise?

Download apps, movies and music before your cruise. Not only can you access this entertainment on the flight to your home port, but you will be prepared should the onboard internet be slow on a sea day when you'd like to catch up on your must-watch show or listen to your favorite tunes at the gym.

To find the strongest Wi-Fi signal on the ship, download a network analyzer like NetSpot.

If you don't need to stay connected while on board, head into port and find a restaurant, bar or a mall with free Wi-Fi. Ask crew members on the ship about the best places for free Wi-Fi in port; they often know. Or, use apps like WiFi Map that show you locations of nearby hotspots when you're in port.

Related: How can I get Wi-Fi on a cruise for free?

If you're struggling to upload photos on a sea day when everyone is on board and online, wait until folks are off the ship in port to try again. Early morning and late at night when people are sleeping are also good times to find faster connections.

Line-by-line guide to cruise ship internet access

If you want to know what's available at sea before booking your next cruise, we've compiled a list of the available Wi-Fi plans and pricing for each of the major mainstream and luxury cruise lines. Most prices listed are per person, per day for the length of the cruise, and for one device, unless otherwise noted. Here is an overview of what to expect for the current cost and capabilities for Wi-Fi at sea; note that cruise lines can update pricing and plans at any time.

Price: Starting at $19.95 per day

Azamara 's internet access is provided by AT&T and Wireless Maritime Service. Guests on board the line's ships can choose to use one of their own devices to access Wi-Fi, such as a laptop or smartphone, or they can log in at one of the onboard Touch workstations.

Prepaid packages can be purchased during the first two days of the voyage, and pricing is based on the number of minutes — or days — guests will need access to the internet. The plans are only available for one device at a time, and unused minutes are nonrefundable. Prepaid options are priced at $19.99 for one hour of usage. A one-day pass is available at $29.95 for a full day. The daily sessions will end within 24 hours of purchase.

If guests buy a Full Voyage Unlimited Package, the cost is $19.95 per day. This plan can be purchased at any time during the sailing, but guests will be charged for the full length of the voyage.

Members of the line's loyalty rewards program, Azamara Circle, receive benefits and perks for internet options based on their level. Members who book a Suite or Verandah Plus category can also combine their loyalty and suite Wi-Fi minutes. Perks of membership range from a 5% savings, including 30 free Wi-Fi minutes, or 20% toward a Full Voyage Unlimited Package at the Azamara Circle Adventurer level. For Discoverer Platinum members, there's a 100% savings on Wi-Fi that provides a Full Voyage Unlimited Package, no matter the category of stateroom or length of the voyage.

Carnival Cruise Line

Price: starting at $10.20 per day.

Carnival Cruise Line offers guests the option of three plans via the line's satellite providers.

The Social Wi-Fi Plan provides access to the most popular social media apps, including Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and others. Prices start at $10.20 per day, if purchased pre-cruise. The onboard purchase price is $12 per day.

The Value Wi-Fi plan, at $14.45 per day pre-cruise (onboard price is $17 per day), includes the Social plan features and also allows guests to browse the internet and send and receive emails.

The fastest connection available (at three times the speed of the Value plan) is with the Premium Wi-Fi plan. At $17 (or $20 on board) per day, guests will be able to place video calls and stream music and videos.

You can also purchase a single 24-hour pass for the Value plan at $20 or the Premium plan at $30.

Celebrity Cruises

regent cruises reddit

Price: Starting at $19.99 per day

Celebrity Cruises ' newest ship, Celebrity Beyond, uses Starlink as a provider for internet service — and the line is in the process of installing this service fleetwide.

For cabins booked as cruise-only fares, ranging from inside staterooms to Concierge class, Wi-Fi can be purchased separately on board the ship at $19.99 per day, per device for a Basic plan, which allows guests to browse the web, send and receive emails and text via messaging apps. The Premium plan costs $34.99 per day, per device, and adds the capability for live streaming, video chats and more. With either plan, there's a 10% savings when it's booked pre-cruise.

If guests choose the all-inclusive cruise price, fares include a Classic Drinks Package (with non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages), basic Wi-Fi access and gratuities. AquaClass cabins always have Basic Wi-Fi included in the fare; suites in The Retreat always come with complimentary Premium Wi-Fi. If you have basic Wi-Fi included in your cruise fare, you can upgrade to the Premium Package for $15 per day.

Benefits of the line's Captain's Club membership include discounts of between 10% off a package for Classic-level members to a complimentary Premium Package for Zenith-level guests.

Cunard Line

Price: starting at $15 per day.

Cunard recently upgraded the hardware, software and access points across its fleet to improve Wi-Fi service for guests and crew. The newly upgraded plans can be purchased on board by logging onto the ship's Wi-Fi and going to the My Voyage app.

The Essential Internet plan is priced at $20 per day when bought on a day-by-day basis, or $15 per day for the entire voyage. This option allows you to browse the internet, send and receive emails, stream music and stay connected on social media platforms via text and photos.

The Premium Internet plan includes video streaming and a three times faster connection speed than the Essential plan. The cost for this option is $30 per day, or $20 per day for the whole voyage.

The pricing for either plan is for one device at a time, and these plans can be purchased at any time during your sailing. If you want to connect to the internet using two devices at once, you can purchase an additional plan with a 10% discount.

Cunard World Club Members may be eligible to receive credit toward internet on the ships: $45 per person for Gold members; $80 per person for Platinum members and $135 per person for Diamond members.

Disney Cruise Line

regent cruises reddit

Price: Starting at $10 per day

Disney Cruise Line offers different internet plans depending on the ship you're sailing and the location of your voyage. You can find out which options are available on your ship after boarding and accessing the DCL-GUEST Wi-Fi network.

For example, on Disney Magic in Europe, guests have a choice of three different packages starting with the Stay Connected plan at $10 per day. This option will provide enough bandwidth to post photos and send texts on social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and Linkedin.

Basic Surf costs $20 per day and includes the benefits of the lower-priced plan (posting photos on social media) along with the ability to surf the internet and send and receive emails. Premium Surf offers the fastest connection speeds at $30 per day and features access to Apple Music and Spotify. Guests will also be able to make calls on Zoom or FaceTime and view short-form videos on sites like TikTok and YouTube, along with other benefits like access to emails, web surfing and more.

None of the packages support video streaming on platforms like Hulu and Netflix. Discounted pricing is available for up to four devices.

On other ships, guests may have to purchase packages by the megabyte, with either a pay-as-you-go option at $0.25 per megabyte or buying the small package for 100 megabytes at $19 ($0.19 per megabyte). The prices per megabyte decrease the more you purchase. It's important to note that there are additional charges to send emails.

Holland America Line

Price: starting at $14.99 per day.

Holland America uses supplemental bandwidth sources, like Starlink, to enhance connectivity for the line's guests and crew and the line offers three Wi-Fi plans. The Social plan, at $14.99 per day, per device (or $69.99 for a 7-night sailing), provides access to most social media websites and applications.

Surf is the most popular option at $24.99 per day ($99.99 for a 7-night sailing), per device, and allows you to search the web and send and receive emails.

The Premium package at $29.99 per day ($111.99 for seven nights), per device, includes streaming and audio/video calling. Additional plans are available for up to four devices at a discounted rate.

If you're considering other onboard expenses, the line's "Have It All" Premium Cruise Package is an economical way to get internet access as well as a Signature Beverage Package (with non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks), specialty dining and a credit for shore excursions. The package is available on most sailings for $50 per person, per day.

Holland America's 5-Star Mariner guests receive a $30 credit toward a Wi-Fi package. Early Booking Benefits for Grand Voyages include 5,000 minutes of complimentary internet access in select suite categories.

MSC Cruises

regent cruises reddit

Price: Starting at $10.39 per day

MSC Cruises ' current internet service providers are SES O3b and Marlink. The line says it's constantly upgrading bandwidth to increase speeds for passengers and crew. Prices for internet plans vary depending on the region; we've included current U.S. rates here.

MSC's Browse Package includes unlimited data, 24-hour internet access, chat and texts, and the ability to post photos and send and receive emails. Pricing starts at $10.39 per day, per device.

The Browse & Stream Package option includes the additional capability to video chat, stream music and movies, and post videos and live stream on social media. Pricing for this option is $14.39 per day, per device. The per-device price drops when purchasing either plan for multiple devices. Note that MSC does not let you switch from one device to another on the same plan, so make sure to sign in to your plan for the first time on the device you intend to use it on.

In addition, guests can save up to 20% on Wi-Fi packages if they book online before their sailing. Voyagers Club members also receive discounts on internet packages. Guests sailing in MSC Yacht Club receive a complimentary Browse package for two devices. It's possible to upgrade the package for an additional charge.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Price: starting at $12.50 per day.

Norwegian Cruise Line 's most basic internet plan is the Unlimited Social Media Access plan for posting on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, WeChat, etc. (but not TikTok). This option is priced at $12.50 per day, per device ($14.99 if purchased on board). If your cruise is 13 days or longer, there will be a reduced price per day.

The cruise line's more popular option is the unlimited Wi-Fi package. It costs $25 per day for one device if purchased online before sailing ($29.99 per day if you buy the plan on the ship). This option provides web surfing capabilities and access to email and social media apps (but again, not TikTok). The unlimited Wi-Fi package for one device is also the plan that's included with a Free at Sea promotional cruise fare. You can find discounted pricing for the same package for two or up to four devices.

The Premium Package starts at $34.99 per day, per device. This plan would include streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, TikTok and more. Discounted pricing is available for up to four devices.

You can also opt to buy 250 minutes of Wi-Fi access for $105 ($125 onboard price). Only one device can be in use at a time with this plan.

If an internet package is included as part of NCL's Free At Sea promotion, guests can purchase an upgraded package before they sail or on board the ship. Loyal cruisers and members of the Latitudes Rewards Program receive discounts of up to 25% on Wi-Fi packages based on their membership tier level. Benefits begin with a 15% discount at the Platinum level.

It's also possible to rent a laptop on the ship or surf the internet at one of the workstations in the fleet's 24-hour Internet Café. Any of the internet packages can be used with a laptop rental or at the onboard cafes.

Oceania Cruises

Price: complimentary to $9.99 per day.

Oceania Cruises provides free, unlimited internet access with all cruise fares via Wavenet Wi-Fi. Released in 2018, Wavenet produces access speeds of 1 Mbps or less during prime guest use. Guests can log on to the internet throughout the ship, including in their staterooms or suites or in public spaces and outdoor areas. They can also use the computers at the Oceania@Sea Internet Center on board their ships if they don't have their own device.

One login is provided per cabin for use on one device at a time. Plans that include access for additional devices can be purchased on the ship, and an upgrade to streaming services for movies or music is available at a cost of $9.99 per day.

Princess Cruises

Price: Starting at $9.99 per day

Princess Cruises claims the "fastest Wi-Fi at sea" with its MedallionNet technology, with download speeds of 12.6 Mbps and upload speeds of 1.9 Mbps. Carnival Corporation and Princess achieve this speed by working with SES Networks, a leading provider for satellite connectivity.

With this internet access, you can check email, chat, surf the internet, FaceTime with their kids and pets, post photos and stream shows and music with speeds similar to what you might have at home

Princess offers a one-device package starting at $9.99 per day that you can purchase through the MedallionClass app pre-cruise. Discounted pricing is available for up to four devices. Platinum and Elite members of Princess Cruises' loyalty program receive a 50% discount on plans that will show up as an onboard credit on the ship.

Guests can also purchase either a bundled Princess Plus or Princess Premier package, which are priced at about a 50% savings of the overall value when purchased pre-cruise through the MedallionClass app. Princess Plus includes a beverage package (with alcoholic drinks up to $12 each), Wi-Fi for a single device and crew gratuities. The cost for this plan is $50 per person per day.

With Princess Premier, guests will receive the Premier Beverage Package (with drinks up to $18 each), Wi-Fi for multiple devices, crew appreciation, two evenings of specialty dining, a photo package, and a chance to win prizes like a free onboard wine tasting, dinner at the Chef's Table or even a free cruise or cash. This package is priced at $75 per person a day.

With the latter option, you can also share the Wi-Fi availability with other passengers in the cabin that do not have Princess Premier.

Regent Seven Seas

Regent Seven Seas Cruises uses satellite communication systems and offers complimentary unlimited internet access throughout its fleet. You'll have access in most of the suites on the ships, but know that bandwidth-heavy applications such as Netflix, Skype, YouTube and VPN are not included in the free plans.

One login is provided per suite for use with one device at a time. Gold and higher-level members of the Seven Seas Society and guests in Concierge Suites and higher receive up to four logins/devices per suite.

If guests are interested in streaming, they can pay for a higher-bandwidth plan at the cost of $9.99 per day.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean touts its VOOM internet as the "fastest internet at sea" with speeds six times faster than Wi-Fi plans you'll find on other cruise ships in the world. Royal Caribbean Group is also in the process of implementing Elon Musk's SpaceX Starlink technology across its fleet.

With Royal Caribbean's basic Surf plan, guests can search the internet, send emails and post photos on social media platforms. One-day passes for one device start at $25.99, and unlimited voyage packages cost $14.99 per day, per device.

With the Surf + Stream package, passengers can surf the internet, stay in touch via email, post photos and also stream music and movies while on board the ship. One-day passes (for one device) for this plan start at $32.99, and unlimited voyage packages for one device are $19.99 per day.

Discounted pricing is available on both the Surf and Surf + Stream packages for up to four devices.

Crown & Anchor Society members receive special discounts on pricing ranging from a 10% discount for Gold level members to free, unlimited voyage access on one device at the Pinnacle level. Price: Complimentary to $19.95 per day

Seabourn provides complimentary, unlimited access to the internet to guests during their voyages. The complimentary Surf Wi-Fi Package provides unlimited access on one device per person. This plan includes general web browsing, email access and posting to social media accounts.

Silversea Cruises

Price: Complimentary to $29 per day

On Silversea Cruises ' classic ocean-going vessels, standard internet access is complimentary in Vista and Verandah Suites, while premium (the line's fastest Wi-Fi connection) Wi-Fi is complimentary for guests booked in Medallion, Silver, Royal, Grand and Owner's Suites. On the expedition ships, the level of internet access is also determined by the suite category, except for Silver Origin, which has complimentary standard Wi-Fi for all guests. For guests on Silversea's full World Cruises or Grand Voyages, all passengers have complimentary premium internet access for the sailing.

On all voyages – and with both types of internet access – the complimentary Wi-Fi is unlimited for two devices used at the same time.

If guests have standard internet access but would like to upgrade to a premium plan, the price is $29 per day (covering two devices connected at the same time). The cost of an extra device on the standard Wi-Fi plan is $20 per voyage.

Silversea is in the process of transitioning to Starlink, and the line expects the upgraded internet to be installed across the fleet by the end of March 2023.

Price: Complimentary

All of Viking 's ocean ships offer complimentary Wi-Fi. Guests can connect to the internet via a personal device such as a smartphone or laptop, or they can use one of the ship's computers in the Business Center, located on Deck 1. The line relies on a VSAT satellite terminal — what Viking says is "one of the best solutions for internet access on an ocean cruise." VSAT can provide wide variances in speed depending on weather and location.

Viking's expedition ships and river ships in Europe, Egypt and the Mississippi also feature free internet access. On Mekong River cruises in Southeast Asia, the line advises that the best option is to use the public computers on the ship to stay connected, but the internet service is limited throughout the region. Viking also asks that guests limit large uploads, downloads and streaming so that Wi-Fi is more accessible for everyone on the sailing.

Travel | travel: alaska is ready for another record-breaking cruise season.

regent cruises reddit

Alaska is home to more than 30,000 grizzlies, but the state’s cruise industry is experiencing anything but a bear market as momentum of last year’s record-breaking season is expected to continue in 2024.

Looking at the most-visited Alaskan port as a proxy for the ship-shape southeastern side of the state, Juneau set a new mark a year ago with 1.65 million passengers descending on the capital city during cruise season, which generally runs from early April to late October. That figure from the Juneau Chamber of Commerce is a Danali-sized jump of 30% compared to the previous mark set in pre-pandemic 2019.

Coinciding with Alaska’s 65th anniversary of statehood, the upcoming cruise season appears to be just as robust with 19 cruise lines sending 43 ships to the Last Frontier. Kicking things off for the second straight year is the 4,008-passenger Norwegian Bliss, which is scheduled to dock in rustic Skagway on April 8. With four mainstream-category ships homeported in either Seattle or Vancouver, Norwegian Cruise Line ( ncl.com ) has nearly 100 more after that. Impressive, but two competing companies have staked out larger claims in this modern-day, maritime Alaskan gold rush; Holland America Line ( hollandamerica.com ) is sending seven premium-class ships for 141 total cruises, and at the top of the totem pole is Princess Cruises ( princess.com ), which is celebrating its 55th year in these waters with seven premium ships sharing 158 departures.

Not counting grand voyages with itineraries so rich that they make a visit to Alaska seem more like a pitstop, this cruise season will see more than 800 trips of mostly seven to 10 days starting or ending on this side of the Pacific. Where they’re all going is a destination rich in unparallel wilderness, wildlife and native culture. In other words, bucket list stuff.

“Alaska is one of those places that draws you in and sets the hook right away,” said Kristi Switzer, destination marketing manager for Travel Juneau ( traveljuneau.com ). “Visitors come for the otherworldly experience of being in the presence of glaciers and fjords, seeing whales and bears, and finding the balance of Alaska Native cultural heritage with the rustic sophistication found in the capital city and other places within this magnificent state.”

Sometimes just seeing a whale's tail is a win when on an Alaskan tour. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Although Switzer recommends visits lasting several days instead of several hours, the city’s destination evangelist hopes that a partial day in Juneau and each major Alaskan cruise port has over 1.5 million passengers wanting more.

“This magical corner of the world has so much to offer beyond being a checkmark on people’s bucket lists,” she said. “Make time to enjoy the fascinating culture, spectacular outdoor recreation, unique shopping, amazing restaurants and artist galleries that Juneau and all of Southeast Alaska have to offer.”

Walking on a glacier is one of the more exciting shore excursions Alaska has to offer. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Alaska is a checkmark for about three-quarters of all passengers headed there, according to the Alaska Tourism Industry Association, and the same can be said for two ships this season.

Starting with a six-day sail out of Vancouver on May 11, the namesake of Celebrity Cruises’ ( celebritycruises.com ) popular Edge class will make her Alaskan debut with weeklong roundtrips from Seattle through Sept. 13. The 2,918-passenger vessel features a unique “outside-in” architecture that provides more floor-to-ceiling glass on the exterior and expanded outdoor spaces to soak up the Alaskan coastlines.

Skagway, a popular cruise port, is the northernmost point in Alaska's Inside Passage. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Edge will be joined by a pair of fleet mates for the season, albeit Summit’s seven-day roundtrips are turnarounds out of Anchorage or Vancouver and Solstice’s weeklong jaunts are solely based in the British Columbian seaport. Celebrity, a premier-category cruise line, meaning it’s between the economical mainstream class and pricy luxury level, has 57 departures to Alaska scheduled this year.

The other new recruit is Silver Nova, the youngest Silversea Cruises ( silversea.com ) ship in the luxury fleet to ever service Alaska. Capped at 728 guests, Silver Nova was launched last year and has the goods to do justice to a dreamlike place that captures the imagination of wilderness lovers and history buffs.

“Silver Nova is the ideal ship for Alaska cruising,” said company spokesman Brad Ball. “Her innovative design, which prizes openness over symmetry and incorporates an unprecedented use of approximately 4,000 square meters of glass, immerses guests into the incredible scenery of Alaska from virtually all venues and suites, with far-reaching views at every turn.”

While in Skagway, let happy and hard-working sled dogs take you on a spin around Musher's Camp. (Photo by David Dickstein)

The ship’s reimagined pool deck, which overlooks the water on her starboard side, and all-new outdoor venues — the Dusk Bar and the Marquee — allows unique openness to view spectacular Alaskan glaciers and wildlife. Those who want to experience an older and smaller Evolution-class Silversea vessel can book the Silver Muse, which also will sail mostly seven- to 14-day trips between Anchorage and Vancouver.

Because nearly every Alaskan cruise includes the staples — Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Inside Passage, and Denali with a land add-on — some cruise lines like to shake things up with unique itineraries.

Holland America has a roundtrip that makes it easy to visit the 49th and 50th states without a long flight. A new “Glaciers & Volcanos: Alaska to Hawaii” cruise, part of the premium line’s Legendary Voyages collection of journeys from 25 to 59 days, departs on Aug. 31 from Seattle or Sept. 1 from Vancouver aboard the 1,916-passenger Westerdam. The near-four-week-long itinerary includes seldomly visited Kodiak and Dutch Harbor before heading down to the tropics to make four calls to three Hawaiian islands.

Seabourn ( seabourn.com ) strives to offer a more tasteful Alaskan cruise and not only because it’s an ultra-luxury cruise line. “Caviar on the Ice” is a savory and swanky soiree on every Alaskan voyage, and when the 450-passenger Odyssey is in Sitka, a town originally built by Russian traders in the early 1800s, Seabourn guests can enjoy a culinary adventure that includes a scenic drive to a taproom for a sampling of local brews and a few eateries to try Siberian-rooted pelmeni dumplings and a hot dog made with caribou that the locals call “reindeer dawgs.” Sorry, vegetarians and friends of Santa, but Blitzen on a bun is da bomb.

Red Onion Saloon, a former bordello built in 1898, is a top attraction in historic Skagway. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Carnival Cruise Line ( carnival.com ) is staying with a three-ship deployment in Alaska this season. Sharing the workload of 55 roundtrips generally lasting seven to 11 days are Carnival Spirit (2,610 passengers) and Carnival Luminosa (2,260) out of Seattle, and Carnival Miracle (2,667) from San Francisco. Another mainstream cruise line, Royal Caribbean ( royalcaribbean.com ), has four ships making 85 runs to Alaska from Seattle, Vancouver and Anchorage: Ovation of the Seas, (4,905) and older sister Quantum of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas (2,543) and Radiance of the Seas (2,466).

Disney Cruise Line ( disneycruise.com ) is sending its 2,700-passenger Disney Wonder out of Vancouver for 15 week-long roundtrips, one five-day spin leaving on July 24 and an extended nine-day voyage on July 15.

Other cruise lines showing passengers a whale of a time in Alaska include Crystal, Cunard, Hurtigruten, Lindblad/National Geographic, Oceania, Ponant, Regent Seven Seas and Viking.

Viking vs Regent? Really?

On another thread Mr. Rumor posted his opinion on this subject. It sounded as if he thinks that Viking River Cruises could be competition to Regent.

IMO, once the hoopla is over, Viking will end up to be more competition to Oceania than Regent. Not impressed with suite size or ship size. Wine and beer only included. No idea of the quality of wine or alcohol available on the package. There is only one included excursion for the ports that I checked and they were walking tours. We were excited about Viking for about 5 minutes.

Any comments?

Haven't been on any river cruises but I've researched them. Viking is not one of the best. Why would their venture into ocean cruising be any better.

Hi Jackie....I about spit out my coffee when I saw your Thread, and I echo the "Viking, Really???" ! I have been researching river cruises for the last 2 yrs (have one booked too) and after all that research the one thing I know for sure without ever setting foot on a Viking ship is that Regent will never have to worry about being compared to Viking!

I think I'm pretty safe in saying that on the rivers of Europe Viking is the Mass Market provider of river cruise cabins. Nice ships that are packed to the gills with as many cabins as they can possibly cram into one of their "Long Boats" and still fit thru the locks. There are many satisfied Viking river cruisers and I won't say I would never sail with them but unless circumstances were really right, Viking would never be my first choice. #1 reason 200 passengers vs 140 to 160.

Ok back to my coffee :)

Guess I shouldn't post so late at night (and on my Kindle). Mr. Rumor was talking about Viking "Ocean" cruises. They have three new ships coming out. Check out their website. From my perspective, it looked really good until I checked deeper into the cruises. Not criticizing them by any means -- new ships -- included wine and beer -- low level excursions included, etc. They just will not be competition to Regent in my opinion. Here is the link http://www.vikingcruises.com/oceans/

I checked Viking cruises out but I think I'll stick with Regent IF they are affordable.

TC - I knew you were talking about Vikings venture into ocean cruising. I just knew that based in their river cruise operation and how it worked on the rivers of Europe I was not likely to be attracted to their "crossover" ocean product!

Then of course there is the issue of Viking requiring payment in full almost immediately after booking, even if the sailing is 12+ or more away!

Just my two cents ;)

Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app

I didn't realize that they required payment so soon. Just looked at the overview of amenities and they remind me very much of Oceania........ priority embarkation, number of times you can make reservations in a specialty restaurant, etc. I remember that priority embarkation for upper suites was one of the reasons I almost left Regent. The two amenities that were impressive was dry cleaning and laundry in the upper suites. That is better than Silversea and better than Regent's Platinum level. As we all know, there is much more to a luxury product than just amenities.

The prices are really good at the moment and they probably will get some Oceania and some Regent customers to try it out. In the long run, it still looks more like a upper premium product rather than a luxury one. Time will tell.

Personally, I don't understand why anyone would care if someone else compares one line to another. If it makes them happy to do so, let them!

I care because I'm interested in learning if Regent customers are tempted to try these new ships? Guess I'm just a curious person.

I LIKE comparisons - I can always learn something - they are very helpful for all!

I just finished watching the Viking video of the Star. Looks like a very nice ship with large public spaces (928 passengers), nice suites and restaurants. We would need to wait for her debut and learn about ambiance, crew, food, included items, etc. Only time will tell.

I'm definitely taking a wait and see attitude. Surprised they don't even debut the first ship until 2015--sure is a lot of hype! And I doubt very much if I would want to pay for a cruise in full a couple of years out--there'd have to be some powerful incentive to do so.

My husband and I just returned from our 1st Viking river cruise, having sailed twice previously with Regent (as per signature).

We were very impressed with Viking, and we are sailing again with them to Myanmar later this year. We are also interested in their China cruise. But we travel for destinations, and we feel that those particular destinations are best visited via a river cruise (for us).

During our recent river cruise, I attended a presentation about the upcoming Viking Ocean cruises and I also flicked through the Ocean cruise catalog. None of the itineraries appealed to me, but if any of them did, I would consider Viking because I think they do a great job of exploring the destinations visited.

Last line does say payment terms may be different for promotions, but normal terms is payment 90 days prior to sailing   PAYMENT POLICY A deposit for cruise/land of $500 per person is required to secure a confirmed reservation. When more than one cruise is booked, deposit and payment policies apply per cruise. The final balance is due no later than 90 days prior to sailing. Promotions and special offers may have different payment terms – please refer to promotion or special offers.
... Last line does say payment terms may be different for promotions, but normal terms is payment 90 days prior to sailing ...

Yes, I am assuming that these rules about paying up front far in advance have to do with promo discounts. I know they do this on their river cruises too, which is a turn-off for me.

We booked one of the Viking ocean cruises for 2015. We actually booked it when they first announced they were building the ship over a year ago. The particular itinerary we booked has been sold out for months.

We just went on our first Viking river cruise (China) and it was a fantastic trip overall.

We have cruised with Regent a few times and will probably cruise with them again. We are also going on our first Viking river cruise in Europe this August.

I believe this is exactly the deal! I do not like that kind of "arm twisting".

I had signed up for a cruise on the new Viking ocean ship when the info first came out last year. However, we cancelled when we learned final payment would be due January 1 2014 ( this past January) for a cruise in June 2015 when the ship hadn't even been built yet. A year and a half in advance is just ridiculous.

I have done only cursory research into this new ocean line, and doubt that it will meet the standards of the old Royal Viking Line, which must have been pretty special.

I would love to hear xrvlcruiser's comments; Peggy, what are your expectations, since you have so many experiences on the "old" line of ocean cruising ships?

Keith1010

TC, I think that anytime you have a cruise line such as Viking that it does provide competition for business even from the luxury lines. You have people who might try it out because it is new or because they want to spend a little less money than on a luxury line based on their budget. The same is true of river cruises which are taking some business away from traditional cruise lines including luxury lines.

At the same time it is an opportunity as sometimes a new line brings people to the cruising fold who ultimately become future cruises on other lines. The same applies to river cruises that are actually bringing new cruisers to the fold who have never cruised before.

I am reminded that even Carnival Cruise lines has made the entire cruise industry successful because of all of the advertising they did in the early years (The Love Boat TV Series in the USA featuring a Princess ship also deserves a lot of credit) and they also bring new people to the fold who at their stages of their lives can't afford a luxury line but years later do.

If Viking provides a premium or above cruise experience yes they will be competition to all of the luxury lines, including Regent, But, as a consumer, that is all good. Isn't it?

DeepFreeze63

We've loved our 5 Regent cruises; 2 more booked. We also loved our two Viking river cruises to Holland and Russia (one of our top ten vacations ever). Ocean and river cruises are different experiences. I've scanned Vikings info on their venture into ocean cruises and decided that we would enjoy Regent more. However, I wish Viking Ocean well as I like competition in what I am purchasing.

5,000+ Club

I think its a bit premature to start a thread comparing Regent with Viking Ocean cruises, don't you think??

Yeah -- think you're right. All we have to go on is their website.

Viking has nothing to do with Royal Viking. Very little today probably compares to Royal Viking.

xrvlcruiser

At this point, I have no plans to sail on Viking - I'm enjoying the names of the ships though.

One RVL perk I enjoy still is meeting people - both passengers and crew - on other lines who are ex-RVL people. Nice to talk about old times and to find out about old friends.

Crystal begins booking 27-country, $85,000 luxury world cruise.

The Crystal Serenity, a 740-passenger cruise ship remodeled in 2023, pictured cruising through New ... [+] York Harbor.

There’s an old joke where a travel consultant asks a customer, “Are you interested in a world cruise?” The customer responds, “No, I’d rather go someplace else.”

But if you’re interested in a five-month luxury journey that will take you to more than 27 countries, the upcoming 2026 World Cruise from Crystal may be for you.

The cruise, that will transport guests from world capitals to tropical paradises, will be open for booking on March 19, 2024. A waitlist is already available.

The Crystal Serenity will be one’s home for 135 days on the World Cruise. The 68,000-ton Serenity is 820 feet long and 105 feet wide with a maximum cruising speed of 22 knots. The ship’s 740 passengers all enjoy ocean view rooms and suites, and the ship has a guest to crew ratio of just 1.33 to 1.

The Serenity was launched in 2003, with Dame Julie Andrews named the ship’s ‘godmother.’ Serenity, which was updated last year, is similar in size and passenger capacity to the Regent Grandeur of the Seas , launched in 2023.

Crystal, formerly Crystal Cruises, was acquired by A&K Travel Group (Abercrombie & Kent) in 2022, after suffering a near-death experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. The deal included the Crystal brand and its two vessels, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony. Crystal says the ships have been “reimagined” with larger, updated suites with artisanal finishes and new wellness offerings.

The 13-deck Serenity includes such amenities as a cigar bar, a putting green, a pickleball court, a spa and various restaurants, including an ice cream shop and UMI UMA, the only dining experience by Michelin-Star Chef Master Chef Nobuyuki (Nobu) at sea.

The Crystal Serenity will depart on its global journey from Los Angeles on January 11, 2026. The 135-day voyage will include visits to 72 destinations in more than 27 countries, to experience their culture, cuisine and civilization.

As one might imagine, such a titanic cruise bears a similar price. Pricing for the 2026 World Cruise will start at $84,000 per person based on double occupancy. Although the departure date is more than 20 months away, this would undoubtedly be a good time to open a certificate of deposits to guarantee one’s funds for the journey.

The World Cruise 2026 destination highlights of the 2026 include:

The cruise kicks off from Los Angeles on Jan. 11, 2026. The Crystal Serenity will traverse the Pacific, visiting the landscapes of the Marquesas Islands, Bora Bora's turquoise lagoons, and the greenery of New Zealand.

From there, the ship and its passengers will visit Australia and the iconic Sydney Opera House and sail on to the bustling city of Hong Kong. The iconic Indian city of Mumbai, the towers of Dubai and the beauty of Bali on are on the Asian itinerary.

The voyage travels on through the Mediterranean, including a visit to Athen and a stop in Monaco, just in time for the Grand Prix. It will conclude in Rome on May 26.
