How Long To Spend at the Churchill War Rooms

Exhibit showing Winston Churchill on the phone in the Churchill War Rooms in London.

Short answer: 2.5 hours

It’s possible to go through the War Rooms and the museum in an hour and a half. But if you want to read every interactive display attentively and study each item closely, it will take around 3 hours and 30 minutes. So, 2 hours and 30 minutes will give you ample time to absorb a considerable amount of info and see all the exhibits at a comfortable pace.

For example, you may want to spend an hour and a half in the Cabinet War Rooms, where Winston Churchill directed the war effort. This is, obviously, a very important section of the bunker. The Churchill Museum will take around an hour.

Facts and History of the Churchill War Room

4 boulevard winston churchill tours

  • The War Rooms were fully operational and ready to receive Churchill, the Cabinet, and British military chiefs on August 27, 1939.
  • The rooms were used 115 times during the war, most often during the Blitz and V-weapon attacks.
  • The rooms are protected by a concrete slab three meters thick.
  • All the typists and switchboard operators were women. They sometimes worked overnight and slept in a basement called The Dock.
  • To stave off health problems caused by the lack of sunlight underground, staff had to strip to their underwear and stand in front of a purpose-built sun lamp.
  • The telephones in the War Rooms were inscribed with warnings about the need for secrecy, particularly when using phones.
  • The War Rooms opened in 1984, and the Churchill Museum opened in 2005.
  • After the Japanese surrender in 1945, the War Rooms were closed on August 16, 1945.
  • Parliament decided to make it a historic site in 1948, and preservation work at the Imperial War Museum began in the 1970s.

Winston Churchill Tour

"We are all worms, "said Churchill, "but I do believe that I am a glow-worm".

About The Tour

Some of the glow persists. You can see some of it when you look at the great brooding statue staring, oblivious to London traffic, across the east side of Parliament Square towards the House of Commons, the scene of so many triumphs.

You get another glimpse in his bedroom in the Cabinet War Rooms underneath Whitehall; the walls are covered with maps showing the deployment of Army units expecting any day to have to face a seaborne invasion and the might of Hitler's Wehrmacht.

But perhaps it is at its clearest at Chartwell where, when things were at their lowest ebb and the country seemed disinclined to confront the growing menace of Fascism, Churchill would prepare the speeches that would eventually convince so many of his friends that something would have to be done and that he would be the best man to do it.

And the afterglow is there too in the little churchyard of St Martin's in Bladon where a plain stone marks the tomb of Winston and Clementine Churchill and the dates of their lives.

Ask us about visiting the Churchill sights in London (the Cabinet War Rooms, St Margaret's Westminster where he married, Palace Gate where he lived in London, his statue in Parliament Square and memorial in the Abbey) or the sights outside London - (his birthplace at Blenheim Palace, or his grave at Bladon, or Chartwell in Kent, his home from 1924 to 1965 where the rooms and gardens remain much as he left them). All sights could be visited on an overnight tour.

Suggested Reading

This is merely a suggested itinerary and can be tailor made to your interests and needs;

Day 1 – Blenheim Palace.  After convening in London make your way out to Blenheim Palace where Churchill was born and raised by his aristocratic family. The current Duke and Duchess of Marlborough still live in the house today. The house has a newly refurbished Churchill exhibition that documents his life in detail as well as grand state and private rooms, and picturesque gardens. At St Martin's Church, Bladon, you can visit Churchill’s grave where he was laid to rest just over 50 years ago.

Day 2– London.  Today enjoy a walking tour around London visiting sites with links to Churchill, including his London home, his statue outside Parliament and his memorial at Westminster Abbey indicating his importance and the love the nation shared for him. At the Cabinet War Rooms, you will be at the heart of government operations during the war. The exhibition has been brilliantly preserved and the map room is untouched since the day it was left in May 1945. Here you really get a feel for the scale and tension around what was a huge operation.

Day 3 – Chartwell. Chartwell was Churchill’s home from 1924 and is little changed from when he left it in 1965. The house holds many treasures and provides an intimate portrait of the Churchill family, showing another side to the leader's ‘British Bulldog’ exterior. You will then return to London and disperse, maybe a visit to the Imperial War Museum would top off what is bound to be a fascinating trip.

What Our Clients Say

I was very fortunate to be on their 70th and 75th D-Day celebration tours. The service and attention to details was exceptional. It was very moving to go back.

As a Jane Austen enthusiast, this tour was perfect - and the Jane Austen Festival in Bath was just fabulous to see!

Words fail me...The Downton Abbey was a perfectly wonderful travel experience! We did not know we would be the ONLY guests at the Abbey. When we realised how truly exclusive our tour was we were speechless! Surreal being there and actually meeting Lady Carnarvon.

WINSTON CHURCHILL 2-DAY SPECIAL PRIVATE TOUR  SPECIAL OFFER This second day of this tour is offered at half-price, saving you up to £315.00 against booking both options separately.

Introduction Winston Spencer Churchill was recently voted greatest Briton of all time. He had a great historical impact, not just with his leadership during World War II, but right across the 20th century. Recently, there has been a flurry of movies dedicated to the great man, including the award-winning blockbuster  The Darkest Hour . This 2-Day Special Winston Churchill Private Tour examines in detail the man who battled to save civilization from the clutches of evil. Note: The tour runs Mar 1st to Nov 3rd (subject to availability).

On both days your driver-guide will pick-you up from your central London hotel or place of residence at the specified time. Your driver-guide will suggest appropriate lunch options on each day. Perhaps a village tea-room, restaurant or traditional pub. Alternatively, you may want to bring a pre-packed lunch or just grab a sandwich. It’s your tour, it’s your choice. Note:  The tour price does not include food or refreshments.

Day 1: Blenheim Palace & Churchill London Walk  After an initial fast-track out from London this tour makes its way to Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, Churchill’s birth-place. It was built over 300 years ago to commemorate a great military victory by his ancestor John Churchill, and is good example of the excesses of late baroque architecture. The landscape, designed in part by the famous Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, is simply stunning in its magnitude. We also visit the village churchyard to see the simple grave where Churchill is buried.

We return to the capital to explore the corridors of power with a walk covering the main theatres of Churchill’s London life, from childhood in St James’s, marriage in Westminster and war in Whitehall. We also discuss the Blitz. In 1940, Luftwaffe formations, up to 1000-strong, used the River Thames to navigate into heart of London and wreak destruction. Much was destroyed, many civilians were killed and a million made homeless. Your guide will explain the effect of the onslaught.

Day 2: Churchill’s War Bunker & Chartwell First we visit the award-winning Churchill War Rooms for a personally guided tour of the British Prime Minister’s underground HQ during WWII, accommodating map rooms, meeting chambers, and emergency living quarters. Deep in the capital’s corridors of power, it was sealed closed in 1945 and remained a secret until 1973. A fascinating time capsule, it also features the Churchill Museum.

The tour then winds its way down to Kent, the ‘Garden of England’, harking back to the long, hot summer of 1940 when the Royal Air Force stood alone against Nazi Germany. As Churchill put it: ‘Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.’ Kent features some of the most picturesque countryside. Thanks to the ‘Few’ it remains forever England. We visit Chartwell House , Churchill’s private country home. Here the gardening, plants, trees, buildings, waters and complete landscape are the vision of the great man. The house interior is also fascinating, and a guided tour uncovers his prolific work-rate. Churchill was no mean artist either, and we will view his famous paintings in his studio. We can also relax in the magnificent landscaped gardens with a superb panoramic vista of Kent, Churchill’s favourite view.

Itinerary Summary

Welcome to england.

Arrive at Heathrow airport where your driver will meet you and take you to Central London. You will be staying at St Ermin’s hotel; this incredible deluxe hotel is built on the site of a 15th century chapel dedicated to St. Ermin and is where Churchill held a historic meeting in 1940. It is rumoured that a tunnel runs from underneath the grand staircase in the lobby all the way to the houses of Westminster! The rest of the day is free to rest, relax and explore the area.

Churchill’s London and St Paul’s Cathedral

After a heart English Breakfast at your hotel you will enjoy a full day guided tour of London including key Churchill’s sites such as his statue in Parliament Square (located on the spot where, in the 1950s Churchill himself proclaimed “where my statue will go,” Whitehall, House of Commons and 10 Downing Street (where Churchill lived during his two terms as Prime Minister from 1940-1945 and 1951-1955.)

Finish your day exploring St Paul’s Cathedral where Churchill’s funeral took place in 1965.

The rest of the evening is free to spend at your leisure.

Blenheim Palace and Oxford

After breakfast your driver will take you to Oxford where you can enjoy a morning walking tour and explore the history and heritage of this beautiful city including the Christ Church College.

You will then spend afternoon at Blenheim Palace, Churchill’s birthplace and ancestral home; explore newly reinvigorated permanent Churchill exhibition and visit the memorial garden where he proposed to Clementine. The palace, one of England’s largest houses was built between 1705 and 1722 and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Afterwards, visit his burial place (and that of his parents and his wife Lady Clementine) in Bladon churchyard; a small churchyard in a beautifully tranquil and quaint English village.

After returning to London and your hotel, the rest of the evening is free to spend at your leisure.

Cabinet War Rooms and Westminster Abbey

After breakfast you will start your day with a visit to the magnificent Westminster Abbey; founded by Benedictine monks in 960AD.  Be sure to take a look inside the west entrance, just near the grave of the Unknown Warrior is a green marble memorial stone unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II in 1965 for Churchill.

Stop by St Margaret’s Church, adjacent to the Abbey, where Winston wed Clementine Hozier in 1908, they remained happily married for the next 57 years until his death.

The next stop will be the fascinating Churchill War Rooms which provided the secret underground headquarters for the core of the British government throughout the Second World War.  This is where Churchill conducted operations during the Blitz. See the wartime bunkers that sheltered the Prime Minister during World War II, the chair which Churchill sat in whilst making life-changing decisions – there are scratch marks on the arms showing the stress he was under and the tiny Transatlantic Telephone Room disguised as a private toilet where Churchill used to speak in secret to the President of the United States.

The rest of the day is at your leisure.

After a tradition Full English Breakfast you will head underground to visit the secret war rooms.

Churchill was one of the most talented figures in history; his talents were predominantly expressed in the political arena. He was however, also an accomplished writer, historian and artist. Discover another side of Winston at Chartwell, his beloved home set in the beautiful rolling hills of Kent. The house is exactly as Churchill left it and much of the gardens are as he arranged them. Many of his painting are on display in a gallery on the estate. After your guided tour and spending some free time exploring Churchill’s home you will head back to London to enjoy a free afternoon.

Alternatively visit nearby Hever Castle; this fascinated 13th century castle once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn and had everything  one would want from a castle; crenellated, moated and (supposedly) haunted.

After breakfast you can enjoy a full free day giving you the chance to explore London on your own.

Why not visit the Imperial War Museum which displays collections and memorabilia from World War I and II or perhaps discover Bletchley Park where the German secret codes were broken during World War II?

Alternatively we could organise a hop-on.hop-off sightseeing bus tour for you so you can explore all the famous sites of London.

After breakfast spend another free day to enjoy England’s capital city on your own.

We can arrange a sightseeing bus ticket for you or perhaps you would like to emabark on a day trip somewhere further afield. We can arrange entrance tickets to almost anywhere in London and beyond, perhaps you would like to visit Stonehenge,

Private transfer to the airport for your return flight home.

  • R5891PTjohns 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Historical pub tour for two. Richard was absolutely great. Before the tour he communicated with us about any Pubs we had already visited or specific ones in which we were interested. He was very informative on the histories of the individual pubs and neighborhoods as well as the general history of the periods through which the pubs served historical figures. It was a fun and enlightening experience — and provided an opportunity to try many different brews! Read more Written 10 February 2024

  • pamsU6757YW 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful Dickens Tour in London! My husband was NOT looking forward to my choice of the Christmas Carol Tour in London, thinking it would be stodgy and boring. Boy was he wrong and he (and I) absolutely loved it! Richard, our tour guide, made this tour festive, humorous, and full of facts we never knew about Dickens, London, the historical times, and more, while showing us places old Scrooge may have worked and lived. Very fun tour - highly recommend Richard! Read more Written 29 December 2023
  • Mario A 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles God bless us everyone. Richard Yes,‘s tours are thoroughly researched, and he provides a great insight and background into jolly old England. We recently went on the Dickens a Christmas Carol tour and we’re very delighted to learn so much about the book, its locations and its characters. Richard clearly enjoys what he does and his enthusiasm is infectious. It was time well spent and we look forward to another tour on a future visit to London. Read more Written 26 December 2023
  • thomw390 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic taste of Dickensian London I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. For fans of Dickens, or lovers of London history, or even those who wish to know a bit more about old London, Richard's tour is a total joy. While history based tours can often be chock-full of information, they can be dry and dusty - NOT SO with Richard's Tours....always engaging, often humorous and yet loaded with fun facts, this walking tour was an absolutely fantastic experience and I would gladly recommend it to anyone who finds themselves in London - particularly those who visit around the holidays like myself - and I would advise you to take advantage of his recommendations for food and sightseeing beyond the scope of the tour. I did just that and am so glad I did...his food suggestions ended up being utterly fabulous, and he suggested to revisit some of the ground we covered on the tour, but at night when lit with the lights of London and that too was advice well-taken! Thanks, Richard for a fabulous Dickensian experience! Read more Written 14 December 2023

We stayed in the Anne Bolyen wing over looking the orchard. The room was very good with an excellent wet room. Arrived and booked in all the staff were so pleasent and helpful. We walked around the grounds and throught the beautiful Italian gardens and then sat looking over the lake. I did the castle early so very few people about so much history. Raffles, Whitehall, London

For a truly memorable visit to London, you can stay in the former office of Winston Churchill, Lawrence of Arabia and the infamous John Profumo. The Old War Office was where Richard Haldane, Britain’s first secretary of war, was a key player in the founding of MI5 and MI6 in 1909. Tread the same hallways as Ian Fleming when he worked in intelligence during WWII and the spies (both men and women) who inspired his famous character James “007” Bond. The building has been used in various Bond films, as the MI6 headquarters in Octopussy (1983), A View to a Kill (1985), Licence to Kill (1989), Skyfall (2002) and Spectre (2015).

Granville suite bedroom at Raffles London

After eight years and a painstaking $1.4 billion renovation, using only British materials except Italian marble, this famous building has reopened as Raffles London at The Old War Office (OWO). Guests are greeted with opulence and grandeur from the moment they enter, with high ceilings, oak-panelled walls and a stunning grand staircase with a huge glass chandelier and original Edwardian clock. It is the first property in the UK for the legendary Raffles Hotels & Resorts. Founded in Singapore in 1887, Raffles Hotels can be found around the world in cities including Paris, Istanbul, Warsaw, Bali, Manila, Jakarta and Boston.

Changing of the Horse Guard at Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall in London.

The London hotel in the imposing Baroque style, Grade II* listed building, built in 1906 on Whitehall, is in a prime location for sightseeing, across the road from the changing of the Guard and just around the corner from Westminster Abbey and Big Ben. Designed by Scottish father and son architects, William and Clyde Young, the War Office was built on the site of the Palace of Whitehall, home for centuries to English monarchs, including King Henry VIII. When it opened in 1906, the OWO housed over 1,000 offices and two-and-a-half miles of corridors that some staff used bicycles to traverse.

Guerlaine atelier at Raffles, London

Today, Raffles features 120 spacious guest rooms and suites, nine restaurants, including two from chef Mauro Colagreco (of three-Michelin starred Mirazur in Menton), three excellent bars, including an invitation-only basement speakeasy in a space once used for top secret MI5 and MI6 documents, and an extensive spa in partnership with Guerlain and Pillar Wellbeing.

Accommodation

Raffles London, Haldane suite

The palatial public spaces, guest rooms and suites are by famed designer, the late Thierry Despont , who restored many other landmark heritage projects like the Statue of Liberty, the Woolworth Building and the Ritz Paris. The Heritage Suites at Raffles were former offices of influential political and military leaders. The Haldane suite, the office of secretaries of war, Winston Churchill, John Profumo and Sir Richard Haldane, can be combined to create a six-bedroom, 500 square meter suite. Known as The Whitehall Wing, this can accommodate up to twelve guests, one of the largest luxury hotel wings available in London.

Churchill Suite Bedroom, Raffles, London

Eight corner suites are named after notable women and female spies connected with the history of The OWO. Situated in the rounded pavilion corners of the building these honor influential women such as Viscountess Astor, the first female MP and Clementine Churchill, as well as WWII operatives such as Christine Granville and Vera May Atkins, and the Nearne sisters.

Eat & Drink

Raffles London, Mauro Colegreco

In keeping with his passion for sustainability, Mauro Colagreco at Raffles London is committed to sourcing local, seasonal ingredients. Dishes highlight the rich diversity of native British vegetables, delivered through a series of tasting menus. Next door, Mauro’s Table is an intimate space featuring an impressive dining table for up to 23 guests. His third restaurant, Saison, in the former historic library of the Old War Office, is more relaxed but the food is equally superb, serving locally sourced cuisine (the London Burrata with blood orange, basil, pistachio is outstanding, as is the Cornish Red Chicken) throughout the day including breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Café Lapérouse in the courtyard serves classic French dishes. Paper Moon, a Milanese favorite since 1977, has opened its first UK restaurant at The OWO. Japanese restaurant, Kioku by Endo from renowned chef Endo Kazutoshi will open later this spring.

Guards Bar, Raffles London

The Guards Bar and Lounge highlights The OWO’s long association and historic connections with the Household Cavalry across the road. The drinks menu has a focus on British ingredients intertwined with flavors from the East, including its own signature “London Sling.” You can also enjoy drinks in The Drawing Room, a relaxed all-day lounge overlooking Horse Guards, and Pillar Kitchen, a well-being-focused cafe.

Pool, spa at Raffles, London

Wellness is clearly important here with a beautiful, vast Guerlain Spa spanning 2,500 square meters, over four floors. Designed by Goddard Littlefair , the spa space offers an impressive range of facilities and services including a gym and movement studio, a 20 meter swimming pool, comfortable loungers, a vitality pool, and steam and sauna rooms. Nine attractive treatment suites offer massages and more and L’Atelier Guerlain, a private beauty and hair treatment space is on the main floor. Pillar Wellbeing , founded by elite performance coach Harry Jameson, offers members and guests personalised, innovative training and nutrition.

Practicalities

Raffles at The OWO, Whitehall, London SW1A 2EU

Room rates are from £1140 per night with breakfast. The largest suite, the Haldane, is from £27,000 per night. Daily history tours are at 10:30am for guests.

Rumors have circulated that Churchill was a lover of brandies and cognacs, and Churchill grew especially fond of Ararat, an Armenian brandy, he sampled at the 1945 Yalta Conference. For Churchill to prefer Johnnie Walker Black, however, comes as no surprise, as a smooth dram of the golden liquid offers aromatic notes of peppery smoke before a sweet vanilla and toffee palate hits your mouth and a finish of fruity, smoky peat settles on the tongue. One sip of Johnnie Walker Black is made up of a blend of some of the more unique Scottish whiskies, and connoisseurs have come to appreciate the bold flavor packed in an affordable label .

A Man Of Many Talents

Winston Churchill's 1930s still life with the Johnnie Walker bottle was given as a gift to an American businessman and special envoy to Europe. Since Churchill primarily focused on painting landscape scenes, the booze-themed subject matter is rare in his collection of paintings. Churchill also painted "Bottlescape," a similarly Impressionist-style still life of a collection of alcohol bottles and an assortment of differently-sized Glencairn glasses , three of which are filled. A lamp casts a warm glow over the scene.

While "Jug with Bottles" was auctioned off for nearly $1.3 million in 2020, "Bottlescape" remains on display at Churchill's estate Chartwell. Chartwell served as Churchill's primary residence in the 1920s and '30s where Churchill spent his time painting, writing, and hosting guests. The estate quickly drained Churchills finances, but with the help of friends, the property was bought for the National Trust and Churchill remained at the estate until his death. Today, visitors can view Churchill's paintings at Chartwell, visit his painting studio, wander the surrounding gardens, and participate in exhibitions organized by the National Trust. Even if you can't make it to Kent for a visit, you can find a bottle of Johnnie Walker and toast to Churchill's creative musings from the comfort of your own home.
