Nusa Penida travel guide

Besides the smoothly blue coastlines are sweeping in cliffs to create the impressive shapes, the nature brings here many supremely beautiful sceneries, attractive enough for travelers from afar.

Nusa Penida island

In addition, you can have an actual experience in a daily life of local residents because of this spot with a still wild and intact scenery due to not so many travelers’ arrival.

A travel paradise, Nusa Penida island is greeting all of you

1 day in Nusa Penida (Nusa Penida day trip): How to get to Nusa Penida island, Bali?

Nusa Penida is a western island of Bali. There are multiple ways to arrive in Sanur port from the center.

Map to direct to Sanur

The traffic in Bali has no subway, has frequent traffic jam, and is always overcharged by taxies’ drivers, therefore, we chose Klook as a companion. With over 1 million VND/person only, our team was assisted by a Klook’s staff to take us from the hotel in Kuta area to Sanur port.

Sanur Port

Every carrier is here specific and every passenger on the ship shall be supplied one name-tag to identify the ticket of which carrier is from.

Many boats to get to Nusa Penida island

If you lose your way, you shall base on the colors of name-tag to follow. One-way (departure/return) ticket price is from 100,000 IDR ~ 175, 000 IDR upon the carrier.

A boat for transfer to Nusa Penida from Sanur

There are 3 departure trips from Sanur port and 3 returning trips from Sampalan harbor in the island for every day.

Water surface at Sanur port in the morning is twinkling as crystal

From Sanur port, the ship spent around one hour to take us to Nusa Penida island. You might rent motorbikes to have your experience in the local residents’ life from faraway island.

Experience in staying with a local family

The rental price is about 75, 000 IDR ~ 100,000 IDR for the whole day, it’s up to your discussion.

Going around Nusa Penida island by motobikes

In addition, you can rent a car driven by your own driver and go with a local tour guide. Coconut tree ranges along to the paved roads.

Coconut trees ranges along to the paved roads

Due to a tour booking on Klook, Mr Wayan & Kadek – two local tour guides have waited for us for a long time. These two guys are Klook’s staffs in Bali, therefore, we didn’t worry anything. The routes on the island were almost asphalted, but are narrow and haven’t many vehicles for travel. The infrastructure of this place still has a lot of inadequacy, however, the natural scenery is ultimately spectacular.

The paved roads in Bali

Every smoothly blue coconut trees range is stretched on the winding roads that sections you have to go up and then go down the slopes, to cross the forests, cliffs, coastlines and then continuously pass on the potholes caused by the traces of fallen rock, obviously that is a very fantastic, amazing and also interesting feeling.

Close-up of a boat ticket to Nusa Penida island

Because of only one day on the island, Wayan and Kadek took us to visit the major landscapes such as Kelingking beach, Angela Billabong cliff, Broken beach, and Crystal Bay – the spots mentioned in the schedule of Klook as well.

Kelingking Beach

The formations of Indonesia’s islands were mostly from volcanoes, the strong erosion of seawater deeply striking against the cliffs created several small bays inside the mountainside. Day by day, the sea waves have ridged into rock rapids to become a majestically spectacular scenery.

Nusa Penida 1 day itinerary (Nusa Penida one day itinerary) — Morning – Afternoon: Visit the spots for extremely virtual photography

A first destination where Wayan and Kadek took us was Kelingking Beach. It was nearly one hour to reach to Kelingking Beach from Nusa Penida wharf. You shall be here attracted in an eye-catching natural scene. If you are a believer indulges in photography, this place shall not make you disappointed. Looking down from above, a full shape of “a giant dinosaur” is creeping into the cave, exposes its tail to the sea side.

Kelingking beach is like a dinosaur creeping towards the sea

Left side of such dinosaur is an ellipse shaped small island as an egg, right side is a white sandy beach with deep blue water, sea waves lap on the purely white sand. This is a specific location where should not omit while footing on Nusa Penida island.

A giant dinosaur in Kelingking Beach

Next, Wayan and Kadek waited for us to visit Angel Billabong cliff. From afar, this cliff looks as a big pool formed by the lava eruption inside a volcano. The pool is located between two cliffs that the interior is the azure jade water.

Angela Billabong Cliff with azure blue water

Momentarily, the big waves overflowed from the sea, hit and covered the cliffs and then melted, the whole pool was risen to a fully white color as some giant snow hills in a vision that you usually watch in films.

Angel Billabong Cliff

Broken Beach is not far away from there. This place has a legendary stone bridge dividing a border between outside of the sea and inside of the deep blue natural pool. Day by day, the seawater has overflowed in the pool through a huge hole under the corrosive mountain edge, likely such stone was broken by someone. That is a reason that people named Broken Beach.

Broken Beach for lovers

If you have time to stay on the island, you can walk along on that stone bridge to see the sunset. Nobody can know when was such bridge from, just know that this is a masterpiece which the nature brought to this island, anybody who came to Bali must drop in this bridge.

Broken bridge

Nusa Penida island day trip (Nusa Penida one day trip) — Afternoon – Evening: Enjoy the delicious food of the locality and visit Crystal Bay

We had lunch in a local restaurant on the island. This tour price of Klook included lunch fee, so you don’t need to worry about food and drink. This meal including one dish (cooked rice/noodles) accompanied by drinks. This restaurant’s space is quite luxurious enough for your unreal life under the sultry weather in the equatorial country.

Lunch with Mie Goreng at the local restaurant on the island

After lunch, our final destination was Crystal Bay, a landscape having an extreme wild beach with the crystal azure water. However, Crystal bay does not possess a white sandy beach as same as the other sea areas due to impaction of the volcanic lava eruption. The waves are adequately strong, are washed over ashore for every time, you can be scratched caused by fragments of stones or corals colliding on feet if you are not careful. Therefore, you should arrange the personal protection equipment such as glasses, life-jacket, etc. for swimming.

Snorkeling in the clean blue sea of Crystal Bay

Being known that we liked taking photos, Wayan and Kadek earnestly kept stuffs for our seriously characteristic experience.

Beautiful Crystal Bay but you should be careful with fragments of stones or corals

We only had one day to discover Nusa Penida, therefore there were a few of spot we went. If there is more time, you should spend 2-3 days to explore all the islands and also the other famous places such as seeing of sunset at Banah Cliff Point, swimming in Tembeling Forest pool, Rumah Pohon tree house, Peguyangan (Guyangan) waterfall, Suwehan beach, Atuh beach, Bukit Teletubbies hill, swinging experience at Saren Cliff Point or coral snorkeling in Gamat bay and etc.

Banah Cliff Point - Nusa Penida

If you don’t know how to get there, don’t worry because Klook shall support you everything.

Saren Cliff Point

Thanks to Wayan and Kadek – Klook staffs in Bali – new friends who are very nice. Surely, we shall come back here in a recent day.

An unforgettable Nusa Penida day trip

When you purchase through links on our site we may earn a commission, Learn More >>

Visiting the gorgeous Island of Bali from Australia is on many people’s travel itineraries. The Island of Gods has many stunning beaches, epic locations for sunsets, amazing food, and warm, happy locals who are always smiling, and ready to share their Island home with us.

But it is the islands that are just a little further on the horizon that strike in the hearts of a traveller and ensure a special place in your heart for Bali. Nusa Penida is one of these places. It is an island bustling to the brim with holidaymakers but what is the best way to enjoy a Nusa Penida day trip?

A Nusa Penida adventure with Klook

Crystal bay, more travel inspiration for your trip to bali, how do you get to nusa penida.

One thing about trying to organize a Nusa Penida one day tour in this part of the world is the uncertainty of getting transport and being able to get around the island to all the big sites.

Bali relies heavily on tourism but getting to some of the most popular sites can be fraught with scams, unreliable drivers and in some cases a language barrier.

Travelling with family, large groups and even solo travelers the plethora of options can be overwhelming and at times downright confusing.

Public transport is nearly non-existent, and then you run the gauntlet of having to deal with vendors on the beach looking for the next foreigner to overcharge.

We were able to take all these issues out of the equation when we went on a Nusa Penida day trip through Klook. For those that are not familiar with Klook, they are one of the biggest tour booking sites in the world.

Klook has the extra advantage of a money-back guarantee if you have to change your Nusa Penida tour packages for some reason.

nusa penida day tour klook

We settled on the Nusa Penida day trip with a photographer , yes our guide doubled as a photographer giving us the added bonus of someone capturing our amazing family travel moment for us. Having a photographer with you takes out all the hassle of worrying about getting great pics during your best day trip to Nusa Penida. After the Nusa Penida tour package, you will get access to all the digital copies of the amazing photo taken.

Nusa Penida in one day

The Nusa Penida tour guide for Klook (in our case his name was Putu), along with a driver will pick you up at your hotel in a car suitable for your travelling group. For our day trip to Nusa Penida that was 7.30 am because we were staying in Sanur.

*Pickup times will vary by where you are staying in Bali as you have to catch the 8 am fast boat to Nusa Penida for your Nusa Penida day trip.

Arrival at the Port of Sanur

The Port of Sanur is best described as chaotic. You will find a row of booths selling tickets to Nusa Penida with what seems like hundreds of people scrambling to get tickets to the boats powered by 5 giant outboard motors off the back lined up along the beach.

When you arrive for your Nusa Penida day trip with Klook you breeze past the chaos straight to your boat, all with the help of your personal Klook guide.

Getting on the Bali to Nusa Penida boat can be a challenge

Boarding the boat is where the Nusa Penida day trip fun begins! Much like a military beach landing, you must judge the waves right as you step up on the back of the boat to avoid getting too wet. It’s the sort of organised madness you only see in Asia but it is made easier with the help of the men manning the boat. They help you climb aboard and if you have luggage they load it on for you.

*In happier news the Government is currently building a proper harbour at Sanur which will alleviate the need to board the boats from the beach through the waves.

Tips for boarding the boat to Nusa Penida:

  • Remove your shoes
  • Try to stick together for boarding
  • Listen to the men helping you
  • Don’t rush or be rushed by other travellers
  • Have all electronics in waterproof bags
  • Wear shorts or clothes than can get wet
  • Bring a travel towel to dry off if you need

Once on board, you can either sit downstairs in the rows of seats provided or you can climb a ladder attached to the side of the boat and sit upstairs. The sometimes rocky boat ride to Penida takes between 45 minutes to 1 hour.

*A word of warning you will get wet if you sit at the back of the boat near the motors

Getting off the boat at Nusa Penida

Arrival at Nusa Penida

The Penida boats are reversed into shore at Toyapakeh Nusa Penida Port. People disembark once again trying to avoid the waves and scurry up the beach to be met by drivers, tour operators and people selling sarongs and sunglasses.

Putu from Klook Bali who was already off the boat and waiting for us directed us to our new driver Made, who will take you to all the best sites on Nusa Penida with Klook.

Our driver Made and guide Putu explained that the first stop on the tour would be Angel Billabong and Broken Beach. Driving through the main street at Toyapakeh you pass stalls, restaurants, guest houses and more tourists as you head into the hills of Nusa Penida.

The shops and people give way to forests and luxury villas in the mountains to the epic Nusa Penida beaches.

nusa penida day tour klook

Angel Billabong

After reaching Angel Billabong, our driver Made got us to the best spots to get memorable photos. Made took photos with our mobile phone as well as some short videos while Putu took pictures with his bigger DSLR camera.

The Nusa Penida Angel Billabong is a breathtaking location on the island of Nusa Penida. The ocean is a deep blue and the cliffs are high, making it a popular tourist spot on Nusa Penida. The photos taken here are simply stunning.

Broken Beach Nusa Penida

Just a few hundred meters away is the popular Broken Beach which you easily walk to from the Angel Billabong. In reality, you can not swim at or even get to this Nusa Penida beach here, but it makes for amazing memories in the form of photos.

Part of a cliff face has given way forming that has created a small cove. Nusa Penida Broken Beach is a great place to watch the waves crash on the rocks and have some wonderful pictures taken.

*You will also find plenty of places between Angel Billabong and Broken Beach to stop and have a drink or purchase one if you need to while you explore Nusa Penida.

nusa penida day tour klook

Lunch on the Nusa Penida day trip

By this time it was nearing mid-day so we headed to lunch at Restaurant Penida. There were lots of people doing the same sort of Nusa Penida day trip eating here and it was a popular spot.

The restaurant had a good choice of meals and we had chicken satay, potato curry and crispy Ayam for lunch which filled us up for the rest of our Nusa Penida trip.

We spent around 30 minutes having lunch which was enough time for us. There wasn’t a set time frame and we found our drivers before heading off to the number 1 attraction on Nusa Penida.

Kelingking Beach

Kelingking Beach is probably the reason you are visiting Nusa Penida beaches. It is the location of thousands of popular Instagram photos and adverts for exploring Nusa Penida.

You will find people posing on cliff tops stairs leading to the Kelingking beach and on the beach itself, and believe me some photo locations at Kelingking are breathtaking.

nusa penida day tour klook

For those who want to head to the bottom of Kelingking beach, the walk is around a 2-hour return, so you will have to check with your guide to see if time allows for you to visit this Nusa Penida beach. I would not even consider this unless you are very fit and healthy as the steps are steep and can be dangerous.

nusa penida day tour klook

Our guides Putu and Made got us into position near the steps to catch the iconic picture at Kelingking Beach. The blue waters, the cliff faces and sunny skies make these images great memories of our Klook day trip to Nusa Penida.

Pictures of us as a family will be put on canvas and hold pride of place in our home for years to come. The best thing about having experienced guides is they are in the know. Made then took us away from all the people and along an adjacent cliff face for more great images from our Nusa Penida day trip. Be aware there will be crowds at most of the sites.

There are plenty of shops between the car park and where the best pictures of Kelingking Beach are taken. We took this opportunity to grab ourselves and our guides some ice creams to cool down since it was nearly 30 degrees.

The last stop on our Klook Nusa Penida day trip tour was at Crystal Bay,

For this one you can bring your bathers and have a swim, or go snorkelling if time allows, Crystal Bay reminded me of the Virgin Beach in Bali. It is set in a picturesque cove with a sandy beach, sun lounges with umbrellas, restaurants, and bars bring your food and drinks while you relax.

Nusa Penida diving with a snorkel can be done with equipment hired from off the beach stalls.

nusa penida day tour klook

The crystal clear waters look so inviting and the rocky outcrop in the water gives it the feeling of being in Thailand. Our kids enjoyed paddling in the water and having some fun winding down on this Nusa Penida day trip.

We took the time to chat with Putu our guide and learn some about his life in Bali while enjoying some cool drinks beside the water.

Crystal Bay beach is certainly popular with the young crowd and day trippers from Bali as well as people who are staying in Nusa Penida accommodation close to the beach.

After enjoying the afternoon sun on the beach we headed back to catch our boat back to Bali. Putu had a driver waiting for us in Sanur who dropped us back at our hotel where we started 9.5 hours earlier.

Why did we choose a visit Nusa Penida day trip?

Sitting on the beach at Sanur in Bali, we have always gazed out at that island on the horizon. If you are at the beach early the sun rises nicely over the hills on Nusa Penida as it lights up the vast holiday island of Bali.

It has left us wondering what draws people there, what makes them return, and what epic locations it would have in store for any visitor.

Also, some of the most amazing pictures of Kelingking Beach and other Nusa Penida beaches made us take the plunge and choose a Nusa Penida day trip.

Top tips for a Nusa Penida day tour

We found it to be much hotter on our Nusa Penida trip than Bali as there is no shade when visiting these locations. You will find shops selling drinks etc at Broken Beach, so make sure you stay hydrated and put on some sunscreen for this tour on Nusa Penida. We spent around an hour or so at Angel Billabong and the Nusa Penida Broken Beach.

the blue ocean waters at Nusa Penida

The roads on Penida are not very good, to say the least, so the journey will be slow and filled with bumps and turns to avoid potholes and get around other cars.

Be aware that Nusa Penida is a very popular destination and there will be plenty of other people on the island doing the same set of sites you are. Be prepared to have to wait your turn for the best locations to get a picture. Your team from Klook will take you straight to the best spots, so hopefully, you will not have to wait too long.

Things to take with you to Nusa Penida sights:

Going on a day trip to Nusa Penida you should consider taking:

  • Travel towel
  • Smaller notes for the stalls
  • Waterproof bag

Is Nusa Penida worth visiting?

We totally enjoyed our day trip to Nusa Penida, it had a real feel of an Asian experience from boarding the boats off the beach, to jostling for the best selfie positions. This Nusa Penida Tour and travel with Klook gives you a real look at the scenic highlights of Penida and Klook are the best people to book with.

The outstanding tour guide Putu and our driver Made were first class, they knew their jobs well and did what they could to make exploring Nusa Penida amazing for us all. Book with Klook today for a day tour package

We hope this article from us here at   Wyld Family Travel has you inspired to visit Nusa Penida with Klook. There are so many things to do in Bali that will have you entertained for your family’s whole stay, and a trip to Penida should be at the top of your list.

When we asked him why, he told us it was because the tourists were now flooding the other spots we were going to visit and that it would be better to go snorkelling first. I appreciate the gesture, but I wish they had told me that earlier. I did not sleep at all because I had to do my makeup at 3am as I assumed we would be going to the "dry" tourist spots first before snorkelling. C'est la vie I guess~

  • 12pm: Head to Angel's Billabong The roads on the coastline of West Nusa Penida are all very bumpy, so I was really glad at this point that we decided to book this package rather than attempt to come here ourselves. Our package comes with an experienced driver that drives here daily, so he is used to driving here + knows how to best navigate Nusa Penida + how to drive on such bumpy roads + how to get to your destination!
  • 1.15pm: Angel's Billabong We reached Angel's Billabong at around 1.15pm, and after a quick walk down we reached the cliffs and pool:

  • 1.30pm: Broken Beach Located 5 minutes away from Angel's Billabong, you can actually walk there by foot.

  • 2.30pm: Kelingking Beach The journey by car between  Broken Beach  and Kelingking Beach took us about 30 minutes by car. Similar to how the road was on the way to  Angel's Billabong , the roads were super bumpy and shaky hahaha. Our driver wasn't fazed though and managed to get us to our destination safely.

  • 3.30pm: Leave for Port After around an hour of taking pictures, we headed back to the Nusa Penida harbour. The journey there from Kelingking beach took around half an hour, and the roads were all super bumpy. To be honest I think the only bad thing about the whole trip was the bumpy roads haha
  • 4pm: Leave for Bali Island
  • 5pm: Reach Sanur Beach Our boat reached Sanur Beach just before the sun set.

  • 6pm: Reach dinner place I forgot to note down the name of this restaurant (as I was quite hungry lol) but the food was very good. The price was not cheap but not too expensive too.

NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP – DO IT YOURSELF

Can you do a day trip to Nusa Penida? Absolutely, and this is what the section here below is all about.

If you prefer to visit Nusa Penida Island without a tour, read on to discover 3 different Nusa Penida One Day Trip Itineraries that I recommend.

Or perhaps you plan to spend a few days on the island and want the full scope of all the best things to do, so be sure to check out my Nusa Penida Travel Guide linked below.

DIY ITINERARY #1

Here is an overview of the DIY Nusa Penida One Day Itinerary #1

  • Crystal Bay
  • Angels Billabong

CRYSTAL BAY

Crystal Bay Nusa Penida is a palm tree haven and an awesome snorkeling location on the west coast of Nusa Penida Island.

Crystal Bay is one of the best beaches to explore and the perfect spot to begin your DIY Nusa Penida trip!

The drive towards Crystal Bay is an experience in itself, passing through local villages and palm tree lined roads, eventually coming to a dead end on the beachfront.

There are a number of beach shack cafes, traditional temples, a coconut palm tree forest, and colorful umbrellas along the shoreline at Crystal Bay, all of which overlook a gorgeous beach cove and a nearby rocky island.

Just offshore, there is a colorful reef system beneath the surface of Crystal Bay Nusa Penida, a very popular spot for snorkeling with all sorts of fish, turtles, and other sea critters.

ANGELS BILLABONG

Angels Billabong is one of Nusa Penida’s most popular attractions.

This natural infinity pool is framed by rock cliffs and hangs out over the ocean and it’s a must-see location on your day trip to Nusa Penida!

The Angels Billabong can be found on the farmost western tip of Nusa Penida’s coastline.

When you arrive at Angel’s Billabong there is a parking lot on the cliffs you will be asked to pay a parking fee of 10,000 IDR.

There are signposts leading the way down the steps to Angel’s Billabong, so you won’t get lost.

The rocks are quite sharp and rugged getting down into the infinity pool at Angels Billabong, but once you step in, the surface of the rocks under the water is smooth and easy to walk on.

Due to its recent popularity, the best time to visit Angels Billabong is early morning to avoid crowds.

BROKEN BEACH

Broken Beach is one of many awesome locations on the island and it is not to be missed on your DIY day trip Nusa Penida.

A naturally carved-out bridge stretches over turquoise waters that flow in and out of the archway, hence the name Broken Beach.

Broken Beach is located right next to Angels Billabong so you can combine these two locations on the same trip.

Although you can’t go swimming at Broken Beach, it is such an unreal setting in itself. The ocean water flows into a natural bowl that is surrounded by towering cliffs.

You can take a panoramic walk all the way around Broken Beach Bali to several different viewpoints offering incredible views of this hole in the cliff.

Perched on the cliffs at Broken Beach you can also find small warungs for a nasi goreng, morning coffee, or a refreshing coconut!

We all know accidents can happen and having Heymondo Insurance will save you thousands of dollars if something goes wrong.

Heymondo offers low-cost Travel Insurance to keep you covered on all your adventures.

KELINGKING BEACH

Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida is one of the most amazing places I have ever been to and it’s the best location for sunset to finish off your one day trip Nusa Penida.

Kelingking Beach, also known as Kelingking Secret Point, is located on the west coast of Nusa Penida Island.

The reason why Kelingking Beach is such a popular location is that the cliffs form the shape of a T-Rex.

The head of the T-Rex can be seen on the left of the bay and the body and tail wrap around to the right.

Access to Kelingking Beach is possible but explore at your own risk.

There are stairs and railings made out of timber that lead down the spine of Keling King to the beach, though don’t completely rely on this and take your time when descending down to the shoreline.

Kelingking Beach has multiple viewpoints around the edge of the cliffs, offering spectacular views up and down the coastline of Nusa Penida.

DIY ITINERARY #2

Atuh Beach is one of Nusa Penida’s most iconic locations, featuring a large cove with crystalline waters, golden sands, and a coconut palm forest.

Atuh Beach is located on the farmost eastern point of Nusa Penida Island. From the main town of Toya Pakeh, it’s approximately a 45-minute drive to reach Atuh Beach.

Pantai Atuh Beach can be accessed from either the left-hand side or the right-hand side of the cliffs via the concrete steps that are cut into the side of the mountain.

The entrance fee you will have to pay to visit Atuh Beach is 10,000 IDR.

It’s the perfect spot to go for a swim to cool off and beach bum under one of many straw umbrellas that line the shoreline.

If you’re looking for a fun-fuelled couple of hours on your day trip, be sure not to miss Atuh Beach on your itinerary – I guarantee you will enjoy it just as much as I did!

DIAMOND BEACH

Diamond Beach Nusa Penida is hands down the most amazing beach I have ever been to, and that’s saying something!

A glistening white sand beach surrounded by verdant cliffs and turquoise water, Diamond Beach is a hard-to-beat destination and one of the best places to visit.

When you arrive at the car park you will have to pay a small entrance fee of 10,000 IDR to the parking lot attendant sitting in his booth before making your way down the stairs to Diamond Beach.

The way down to Diamond Beach Penida only takes around ten minutes before emerging on the sandy shoreline.

A small warung resides down on Diamond Beach where you can buy cold refreshments and local dishes such as mie goreng and nasi goreng for as little as $3 to $5.

You can also have a turn on the Diamond Beach Nusa Penida swing which is strung up between two coconut palms down by the beach.

RUMAH POHON TREE HOUSE

Ruma Pohon Tree House has become very popular thanks to Instagram and it’s one of the best places to visit on your day trip to Nusa Penida!

At the jump-off point, you will find a small ticket office where you will have to pay 5,000 IDR for the entrance ticket to Rumah Pohon Tree House.

The hike down the ridge takes no more than five or ten minutes to the first viewpoint that overlooks the bay known as Thousand Islands (Pulau Seribu).

Once you are satisfied with marveling at Thousand Island viewpoint, continue the adventure further down the ridge and you will see the Rumah Pohon Tree House on your left-hand side.

To capture the perfect Instagram photo of the Nusa Penida Tree House you can stand on the hill on the right-hand side of the track to get the best angle.

TELETUBBIES HILL

Bukit Teletubbies (Teletubbies Hill) in Nusa Penida is best known for its lush green rolling hills and incredible viewpoints that overlook the entire Nusa Penida Island.

Bukit Teletubbies is located in the southern mountain ranges on Nusa Penida Island.

There are half a dozen different viewpoints at Bukit Teletubbies, and on a clear day, you can see the neighboring island of Lombok and the almighty  Mount Rinjani , the second-largest volcano in Indonesia.

The best way to explore Bukit Teletubbies (Teletubbies Hill Nusa Penida) is on foot. Take a short hike to get a different perspective of this incredible landscape from nearby peaks.

The DJI Mini 3 Pro is the most affordable, user-friendly drone camera suitable for all levels!

This travel-sized drone captures 4K/60fps video, 48MP photo, and has 34 minutes flight time.

GOA GIRI PUTRI CAVE

Goa Giri Putri Cave is one of Nusa Penida’s most underrated tourist spots but not to be missed.

There is a small car park at the entrance and here you will also be asked to wear a sarong which you can rent for 5,000 IDR and the entrance fee to the temple is 20,000 IDR.

Take the winding staircase midway up the mountain and you’ll be greeted by a man that will bless you with some holy water on the forehead.

I was absolutely jaw-dropped at how insanely huge the Pura Goa Giri Putri cave is, my guess is 300 meters long and 15 meters tall.

We wandered deeper into the Pura Goa Giri Putri cave and stumbled upon a small group of locals sitting in prayer around an altar.

Incense filled the air and we pretty much went unnoticed as we walked around the cave.

Follow the pathway to the end of the Goa Giri Putri cave to a viewpoint of a small village in the lush green mountainside.

You can exit the cave here or head back the same way you came to the parking lot.

DIY ITINERARY #3

Here is an overview of the DIY Nusa Penida One Day Itinerary #3

  • Manta Point Snorkeling
  • Banah Cliff Viewpoint
  • Tembeling Beach & Lagoons
  • Peguyangan Blue Stairs & Waterfall

MANTA POINT SNORKELING

Snorkeling at Manta Point Nusa Penida is one of the most epic experiences you could ever have.

These underwater giants are incredibly humble and to be able to swim with them is a moment you will never forget!

I recommend booking your Manta Point snorkeling tour the day before to secure your spot on the boat. The tour starts between 7:00 am – 8:00 am and finishes around 12:00 pm.

The tour includes all snorkeling equipment and it will stop at three different snorkeling sites – Manta Point, Toya Pakeh Wall, and Crystal Bay.

These majestic creatures are absolutely incredible! They glide effortlessly through the ocean and are really friendly to swim with.

The manta rays at Manta Point can be quite intimidating to begin with due to their body size of up to 5 meters, though you will soon realize they are harmless, humble giants.

Snorkeling at Manta Point is the best way to begin your DIY Nusa Penida trip!

BANAH CLIFF VIEWPOINT

Banah Cliff Nusa is one of the best viewpoints along the southwest coastline of Nusa Penida Island!

There are not just not one but two incredible viewpoints at Banah Cliff.

At the jump-off point to the right is the panoramic view and to the left is the official Banah Cliff.

The panoramic viewpoint at Banah Cliff Nusa Penida faces west and offers extreme views of surrounding cliffs, perched high above the ocean.

On a clear day, you can actually see the tail of the T-Rex at Keling King Beach.

Be very careful when taking photos at Banah Cliff as there is no safety barrier to protect you from falling hundreds of feet to the ground. Know your limits.

The other viewpoint at Banah Cliff faces east and offers an awesome viewpoint of an arched rock island just off the coastline. Again, please watch your step along these rocky cliffs.

TEMBELING BEACH & LAGOONS

Tembeling features a number of cool things to see including pristine white sand beaches, tropical rainforests, natural lagoons, hidden caves, and cliff-jumping spots.

The main attraction at Tembeling Nusa Penida is the freshwater blue lagoon nestled in the Tembeling Forest.

This freshwater natural pool is the perfect spot for a swim on the way down to Tembeling Beach.

You can also discover the hidden cave and secret beach just a short 2-minute walk from the blue lagoon through the Tembeling Forest.

There is also a freshwater jacuzzi pool that the locals have creatively built on the edge of the cliffs.

And of course, there’s Tembeling Beach where a number of tidal pools can be found to take a dip but swimming in the waves here is not recommended.

PEGUYANGAN BLUE STAIRS & WATERFALL

Last but not least on your DIY Nusa Penida trip, the ultimate adventure awaits at Peguyangan Waterfall and the Instafamous Blue Stairs.

At the jump-off point for Peguyanngan Waterfall, you will have to pay a small parking fee of 5,000 IDR.

There are 750 blue stairs that are impressively constructed into the side of the cliff giving access to Peguyangan Waterfall.

There are several viewpoints that make for great photo opportunities as you make your way down to Peguyangan Waterfall.

After a 20-minute hike down the blue stairs, you’ll arrive at the sacred water temple that has four waterspouts.

The waterfall itself is not your common 50-meter meter waterfall, like those you will find in  Bali , but rather a waterspout between a crack in a rock where crystal clear water flows out into tiered rock pools and over the cliff edge into the ocean.

NUSA PENIDA ISLAND – FAQ

Here are some quick answers to the most frequently asked questions from first-time visitors.

HOW TO GET TO NUSA PENIDA?

Bali to nusa penida:.

Fast Boats operate daily to Nusa Penida from Sanur Harbor in Southeast Bali. You can book the fast boat online  in advance to guarantee the lowest price.

The fast boat ticket to the Nusa Penida also includes a hotel pick-up from your accommodation in Bali and a drop-off directly to the pier at Sanur Beach Port.

The boat trip takes approximately 45 minutes from Bali to Nusa Penida Island.

NUSA LEMBONGAN TO NUSA PENIDA:

You can also take a boat to Nusa Penida from Nusa Lembongan if you happen to be exploring this island first.

A boat from Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Penida will cost you around 50,000 IDR.

You can organize the boat via your accommodation on Nusa Lembongan or simply head to the main beach port on Lembongan Island and ask one of the boat companies located down on the beachfront.

Alternatively, you can book a Nusa Penida day trip from Nusa Lembongan, and I’ll tell you more in the following sections.

nusa penida boat 2

HOW TO GET AROUND NUSA PENIDA?

Nusa Penida is quite a large island and it can take up to one hour to get from one side of the island to the other.

The best mode of transport to visit all the tourist spots in Nusa Penida is by scooter.

When you arrive at Toya Pakeh harbor in Nusa Penida there are a number of scooter rental shops on the beachfront that will be able to sort you out with some wheels.

I paid 70,000 IDR per day for a scooter rental that came with a full tank of gas so you can expect to pay something around this price.

Be sure to get a helmet as an extra precaution for riding on the roads in Nusa Penida as they are not very well maintained.

CAN YOU TAKE A NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP FROM ULUWATU?

The ferry from Bali to Nusa Penida departs from Sanur Port , which is in Denpasar, and you’ll have to take a taxi to get there.

However, when joining a day trip to Nusa Penida , transportation is included and you can let the guide know where your hotel is, and they will pick you up, which is so convenient.

This is the best option when it comes to taking a Uluwatu to Nusa Penida day trip.

The same applies to Nusa Dua to Nusa Penida day trip.

COST OF A NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP

The cost of a Nusa Penida 1 day trip from Bali depends on the option you go for – Let me clarify here below.

NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP

A day trip around Nusa Penida (whether you choose the Nusa Penida West or Nusa Penida East tour) will cost you about $35 per person, including transportation and the tour guide.

The catch? These tours start in Nusa Penida, so you’ll have to get there from Bali on your own and pay the ferry tickets.

NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP FROM BALI

On the other hand, when booking an All-inclusive Nusa Penida day trip from Sanur, you can expect to pay around $100 per person.

While this is more expensive, it includes the ferry ticket from Bali and back, lunch, and the entrance fees to all attractions, making it much more worth it if you ask me!

Click here below to see this day trip to Nusa Penida from Nusa Lembongan.

NUSA PENIDA DAY TRIP FROM LEMBONGAN

Nusa Penida day trips from Lembongan cost about $37 per person, including transfers from Lembongan, snorkeling sessions, and a mangrove trip.

Note that, usually, Nusa Penida tours from Lembongan do not include any sightseeing but rather snorkeling only, so keep that in mind.

Hi Jonny, great guide! We are heading to Nusa Penida from Lembongan and wondering if we can book tours/drivers upon arrival at Toya Pakeh harbor? Thanks!

Hi Mori, absolutely yes. As soon as you arrive in Toyah Pakeh there are dozens of locals that will be able to take you around the island for the day! Have an awesome time!

We are a young couple and we have only one day, which one will you recommend, #1 or #2?

Hey Daniel, #1 would be my personal pick! Enjoy 🙂

Hi Jonny We are a family of four(all adults). would like to have a non-guided 1-day tour. What do you suggest?

Hey there, I would suggest choosing one of the DIY Nusa Penida itineraries I have outlined above. Enjoy your time!

Hi. 2 adults, 15, 18 and 19 year old. What’s the best tours or things to do. Staying in Seminyak. Thanks!

Hi Brooke, my suggestion is to do the West Nusa Penida Tour! Suitable for all ages, you’ll love it! You can book online using the links above in the article. Enjoy 🙂

NUSA PENIDA TRAVEL GUIDE: Experience Island Tour with Snorkeling

Complete Nusa Penida Island Guide

Table of Contents

A trip to the Land of Gods Bali in Indonesia is never complete without exploring its tourist-famous southeastern island, Nusa Penida. The island district of Klungklung Regency may be small, but it’s filled with breathtaking attractions like beaches, dive sites, and viewpoints.

Kelingking Beach is one of the most popular attractions at Nusa Penida Island

Some of its many gems are Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, Angel Billabong, Crystal Bay, Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, Suwehan Beach, Peguyangan Waterfall, Tembeling Forest, and Segening Waterfall.

How to get to Nusa Penida

And because it’s popular, the ports going to the island never miss a big crowd daily. To get to Nusa Penida, you must take a fast-service ferry from Sanur Harbor. Don’t worry about not getting a ticket, as many ticketing offices already exist. To get around the island of Nusa Penida, it’s best to hire or rent a car.

Book a Nusa Penida Day Trip via KLOOK

To skip the hassle, we recommend booking your Nusa Penida day tour via Klook, which pretty much arranges everything for you, like what we did during our recent Bali trip with Cebu Pacific. Round Trip ferry tickets, car charter service to and from every destination, entrance fees to almost all attractions, fuel, a tour guide to better appreciate the places, and even free lunch if you opt to include it in your package.

The guides from Klook were really accommodating and attentive to our questions

Klook offers private tours and joiner tours. Since during this trip it was just a friend and me, we decided to get the joiner tour to save money. We really enjoyed the whole trip because we didn’t have to think about the trip arrangements anymore since it was all taken care of by Klook, and we just had to show up at our meet-up place. After the tour, we were also dropped off at the same place just a few steps away from our hotel.

You will be picked up and dropped off for private tours from and to your hotel. Very convenient! Since Klook has been a trusted travel, tour, and activities provider, you can assure you are safe all the time. You can even read reviews from other travelers who have availed of the Nusa Penida tour package.

Here are the inclusions of the package we booked:

  • Admission to attractions
  • Bottled drinking water
  • Round-trip transfers to and from your hotel
  • Basic English-speaking driver/guide
  • Shared boat rides between Sanur Harbor and Nusa Penida (worth IDR300,000)
  • Local tax (IDR25,000)
  • Private transfer on Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida Day Tour with Snorkeling Sample Itinerary

For this trip, we wanted to also experience the marine life of Nusa Penida, which the island is also famous for. Depending on the season, you can add this to your Klook booking for about $20.

Taking the fast-service ferry at Sanur Harbor to Nusa Penida

We chose the West Nusa Penida day tour, which started at around 6:30AM when the driver picked us up from a nearby convenience store from our hotel, our assigned meeting place. We traveled to Sanur Harbor, and from there, we were guided to the fast-service ferry we were taking to go to the island.

The ferry ride to Nusa Penida took less than an hour

It took less than an hour to get to Nusa Penida, and it was smooth and hassle-free. We were led to an area where guests could prepare before diving or snorkeling. There are showers and changing areas available, which you can utilize after the activity. If you’re not doing this activity, you’ll go to where your car charter service is parked and begin your land tour.

This was us on the speedboat en route to the snorkeling areas; the equipment was provided and included in the package

Not too long, we started to jump in our speed boat leading to the snorkeling areas. The first stop was Manta Bay. The boatmen and our guide were so happy because, after long weeks of no sighting, we saw one manta ray and swam with it!

Manta ray sighting at Manta Bay

Next, we went to Gamat Bay, Crystal Bay, and Wall Bay. We spent about 2-3 hours of magical underwater experience, swimming and exploring the island’s beautiful corals and fishes. This is definitely worth the try.

Right before lunchtime, we went back to the mainland. We took our service, and it first dropped us off at an eatery for our free lunch. After lunch, we started touring around. The spots aren’t far from each other, and you’ll just have to go on a short walk to get to them.

1. Kelingking Beach

Kelingking Beach and its famous T-rex-shaped cliff

One of the most popular stops for Nusa Penida tours, this scenic beach offers a jaw-dropping view from its clifftop. The huge cliff takes the shape of a T-Rex, and the ocean looks pristine with its white sand and different shades of blue water.

2. Broken Beach

Even though the day was gloomy during our tour, the view was still breathtaking

Our next stop was Broken Beach which is popular for its archway cove that leads to the ocean, allowing the waves to come in and out majestically. While swimming at the beach is not allowed, you can take as many photos as possible from its viewpoint.

3. Angel Billabong

Angel Billabong Photo courtesy of Klook

Angel Billabong’s crystal emerald waters, which look like a natural infinity pool, mainly draw tourists because they give a panoramic ocean view.

At around 4 or 5 in the afternoon, we were brought back to the port to return to Sanur Harbor. Then at 6PM, we were dropped off at the convenience store and returned to our hotel.

The Best Nusa Penida Day-Trip from Bali

Nusa Penida is the biggest of the three Nusa Islands (and most epic), located just off from mainland Bali. BUT did you know it’s only a 30-minute boat trip from the Sanur Harbor in Bali so it’s VERY easy to reach quickly for a Nusa Penida day trip if you are staying in Canggu, Seminyak, or Kuta. There are so many awesome things to do on Nusa Penida Island and there are two main different Nusa Penida day trip tours I suggest you look at.

a man swimming under a manta ray in the ocean.

Table of Contents

The Best Nusa Penida Day-Trips from Bali

In this blog post, I’m going to detail the two most popular Nusa Penida day trips from Bali. The first option is the Manta Ray Snorkel Tour . It’s honestly the most amazing experience to swim with gentle Giant Manta Rays. The tour takes you from Bali to Penida to snorkel with mantas but also to snorkel at other locations where you will find beautiful corals and even spot turtles. The second tour is the BEST of Nusa Penida Day Tour , which basically takes you to all of the most iconic viewpoints and beaches on Nusa Penida in one day.

BEST NUSA PENIDA TOURS!

These are the four most popular Nusa Penida Tours. I’ve done all four and they are AWESOME !

tree house nusa penida, nusa penida treehouse, bali treehouse accommoation, tree house villa bali, bamboo treehouse bali, rumah pohon treehouse, the treehouse bali, airbnb treehouse bali

  • Manta Ray Snorkel Tour (from Bali) – Most amazing experience to swim with Giant Manta’s.
  • Manta Ray Snorkel Tour (from Penida) This is the cheaper option if already on Nusa Penida.
  • BEST of Nusa Penida Day Tour (from Bali) Most booked day trip fro Bali to Penida with all highlights
  • Nusa Penida Car Rental with Driver : Great way to see all the highlights and tourist spots.

BEST NUSA PENIDA DAY TOURS

If you are staying in Bali.. take a day trip on a speedboat to explore the highlights of Nusa Penida. It takes just 35 minutes to get from Bali to Nusa Penida by speed boat. Yep, in just one day you can snorkel with Manta rays and visit lots of the best beaches and viewpoints.

Manta Ray Snorkeling Tour

Manta Ray Nusa Penida Tour (from Bali): Snorkeling with Manta Rays is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one of the best wildlife encounters I’ve had in my life. The Manta Rays are majestic and very friendly. With a wingspan of 5m, these gentle giants cruise around you while you snorkel amongst them. The Nusa Penida Manta Ray Snorkel Tour includes pick up and drop off from your hotel in Bali and all transport and tickets included.

Nusa Penida Highlights Tour

Nusa Penida Highlights Tour : Get picked-up from your Bali hotel, take a 35-minute fast boat to Nusa Penida and then visit the most popular viewpoints, beaches and snorkel spots on the island. This small Nusa Penida Highlights Tour group tour is the most highly reviewed day trip for Nusa Penida Island. You’ll visit all the most popular spots and can request certain viewpoints on your itinerary. Places you will visit are sites like the ones listed below:

Angel’s Billabong

  • Kelingking T-Rex Beach

Broken Beach

  • Rumah Pohon Treehouse
  • Snorkeling at Crystal Bay
  • Thousand Island Viewpoint

Okay, that was a the brief overview of the two tours I will detail in this article. Below, I’m going to go into the exact details of what each tour involves as I have personally done them both!

Nusa Penida Day Trip – Snorkeling with Manta Rays

This is a tour you simply cannot afford to pass on. I know for some people they are on a budget in Bali or they prefer not to book tours but I guarantee you, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to float around with Giant Manta Rays.

  • Swim with the massive reef manta rays of Nusa Penida
  • Visit Crystal Bay, Atuh Beach, Diamond Beach
  • Snorkel in scenic spots around Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan
  • Enjoy a delicious beachside lunch overlooking a white sand beach
  • Explore some of the most diverse reefs on the planet

CLICK HERE TO BOOK YOUR TOUR: Manta Ray Snorkeling Tour

The tour includes lunch, and several other snorkeling spots near Manta Point where you can see turtles, corals and tropical fish. You’ll also cruise through a few beaches on top of the Manta Point snorkel.

As soon as we plunged into the water, we found ourselves looking directly at a huge Manta Ray, one of the most impressive beings of the sea. It was completely surprising, I assumed we’d be hanging around waiting for them. More than five of these Manta Rays were making repeated circuits in the bay, delighting the cluster of snorkelers. Unlike turtles or fish that tend to swim away at the presence of humans, the Manta Rays were consistently interactive, circling back time and again. They would often approach you directly and then quickly swerve off to one side at the very last moment.

Snorkeling with Manta Rays Availability

You can use this calendar below to see the availability of tours. It’s important to book this tour in advance during high season as it can be a very popular activity on Nusa Penida and they try and limit the number of boats in the water.

Gamat Bay Snorkeling

As part of the Manta Ray Snorkeling tour , you will get to snorkel at Gamat Bay aswell. We jumped off the boat, and immediately realized the water at Gamat Bay is much colder than at Manta Point and Crystal Bay. I’m not sure why that is. The second thing we noticed was the incredible coral structures and rock formations beneath the surface. The depth ranged from a few meters closer to shore all the way down to perfect free-diving depth of 5-20 meters.

Our guide told us this is where you can see a turtle if you are lucky. We looked long and hard and finally, we found a turtle who let us chill near him for ten minutes as he went about his business. The water clarity at Gamat was perfect!

BEST of Nusa Penida Tour: Epic Day Trip

This BEST of Nusa Penida Day Tour from Bali via fast-boat is the best way to see Nusa Penida in just one day. The itinerary looks like the following:

  • Hotel pickup by car
  • Fast-boat to Nusa Penida
  • 4-5 Sightseeing spots on Nusa Penida
  • Fast-boat to Bali
  • Hotel drop-off by car

nusa penida day tour klook

The BEST of Nusa Penida Day Tour is the most convenient way to see Nusa Penida in just one day. There are three set spots on the itinerary but you can customize the schedule and spots to visit by discussing with the tour guide and tour company, which is quite important. You may have some bucketvlist items that you want to guarantee that you see so just discuss that in advance and they will make it happen!

Below I’m going to detail each of the spots on the itinerary and/or those spots you can add to the itinerary by customizing it!

Atuh Beach is one of the most picturesque and beautiful beaches on Nusa Penida, an island off the southeastern coast of Bali, Indonesia. It’s s a stunning white sand beach surrounded by the huge cliffs and remarkable rock formations. An arch sits directly out from the shore while several islets string off in the distance.

Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach, found on the far eastern edge of Nusa Penida Island in Indonesia, is famous for its incredible natural scenery. The beach showcases an extraordinary setting marked by clean white sands, transparent turquoise waters, and high cliffs. The beach’s distinct rock structures, which look like shining diamonds, give this beach its unique name. A carved staircase descending the cliffs allows entry to the beach, presenting stunning wide-angle views on the way down.

But the key feature here is the rock shaped like a diamond in the shallow waters. After all, I think this diamond-like rock is what gives the beach its name.

Nusa Penida Treehouse (Rumah Pohon)

The Tree House (Rumah Pohon) on  Nusa Penida  has become something of an iconic spot. It is perched up on the mountain at Thousand Island (Pulau Seribu) viewpoint near Atuh Beach.

It is part of the Thousand Island viewpoint area costing only 10,000 rupiah to park and enter, which is less than $1 USD. The best part about this treehouse is that it is actually a house and you can rent it out for pretty cheap considering how popular this spot has become and how insane the view is.

Teletubbies Hill

Teletubbies Hill is a great spot to understand just how diverse the landscapes are on Nusa Penida and it was incredibly interesting flying the drone here scoping out all the different contours, valleys and canyons in this region.

Angel’s Billabong is one of the magical spots to visit on Nusa Penida. A crystal clear tide pool cascades into the ocean on the east coast of Nusa Penida. Angel’s Billabong is an enchanting natural wonder located on the island of Nusa Penida, Bali, Indonesia. This unique rock formation, nestled on the island’s southwestern coast, forms a tranquil natural infinity pool that overlooks the vast Indian Ocean. During low tide, the pool’s crystal clear water provides a safe and serene spot for swimming, revealing a mesmerizing underwater world.

Broken Beach is an incredible little cove on Nusa Penida island. The highlight of the cove and the reason it is called Broken Beach is due to the archway that wraps around the bay allowing water to flow in and out from the ocean. Broken Beach is also one of the spots on the  Ultimate Nusa Penida Day Trip Tour from Bali .

The arch at Broken Beach has been formed over many, many years and is now a true spectacle. From above the cove appears almost circular and closed in, however, at eye level the arch is quite high.

Kelingking Beach

The Instagram famous coastal cliffscape, which truly does look like a T-rex doesn’t disappoint. I still remember the moment I laid eyes on Kelingking Beach. I watched the crystal clear water slowly form into a wave before crashing below us, in what seemed like slow motion.

Nusa Penida has so many amazing views making it hard to pick ‘the best one’. But when the cliffs form in the shape of a Tyrannosaurus Rex at Kelingking Beach it is bound to be a crowd favorite. Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida is one of the MOST epic spots in all of Indonesia and worth voyaging out to visit from Bali.

Crystal Bay

Crystal Bay is probably the most popular beach on Nusa Penida for a number of reasons. It is the best sunset beach, facing directly west. This alone makes it a winner for people trying to have a sunset beer and watch the sun go down.

It’s also the jump-off spot for snorkel tours and is only a 30-minute drive from the main port, Toyapakeh. Most importantly, unlike many of the crazy beaches on Penida, you can snorkel and swim with relaxing conditions.

Of course, if you have more time than just a day trip you can check out my blog post about my 27 favorite things to do on Nusa Penida and enjoy exploring the island.

TOP 3 PLACES TO STAY ON NUSA PENIDA

I’ve written a massive, detailed guide about the Best Places To Stay on Nusa Penida …. BUT If you just want me three favorites right now, here they are!

a pool with lounge chairs and a thatched roof.

  • My TOP Pick: Atalaya Villas – Bungalow Style, Beautiful Palm Trees, Great Location.
  • Beach Bungalow: Santen Bungalows – Stay on the beach, Best Value for Money
  • Luxury: Nay Palad Hideaway – Oceanfront, Beach Access, Beautiful Pool

How to get to the Nusa Islands

There are three main options to get to Nusa Penida depending on your budget and how many logistics you want to manage. Here are the three options with the cheapest first:

  • Book your ticket:   Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Lembongan – Book a regular ferry that leaves from Sanur to Nusa Penida on the reliable website 12go . You then need to moped or taxi across to Nusa Penida via another ferry/boat.
  • Book a fast boat: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option is great as you go direct from Bali to Penida without having to stop in Lembongan. This option is only slightly more expensive than stopping in Lembongan. This is my favorite option of the three and can be booked on Klook .
  • Book a fast boat with hotel pick-up: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option includes a fast boat from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida but also includes pick-up from your hotel in Bali in a van. This option from GetYourGuide is a bit more expensive but takes all the hassle out of the transit from Bali to Nusa Penida.

The Bali to Nusa Penida route: What’s the best way to get there?

how to get from Bali to Nusa Penida

As Nusa Penida doesn’t have an airport, the only way to get to the smaller island from Bali is by boat. You have a few different types of boats to choose from for your trip, including fast boats and ferries, both of which offer multiple departure times each day.

Ferries to Nusa Penida : If you decide to go by ferry, which is the more affordable option, your best bet is to book a ticket with 12Go Ferries . However, you should keep in mind that some of these ferries won’t go directly from Bali to Nusa Penida and instead first make a stop in Nusa Lembongan.

Fast boats to Nusa Penida : Fast boats or speedboats take you directly from Bali to Nusa Penida and are the more popular option among tourists. Although these boats cost more, you’ll get to your destination much faster and you’ll enjoy a much more comfortable voyage. Some of the best fast boat operators include Blue Water Express and Penidago among others.

Which ports do you depart from/arrive at?

fast boats in Sanur

The main port of embarkation is Sanur Harbor, but it is also possible to reach Nusa Penida from Padangbai . Both ports are quite busy, with a lot of noise, chaos and harbor traffic, so make sure that you arrive at least 30 minutes before your boat’s departure time so you can find your boat.

Nusa Penida has four arrival ports, namely Toyapakeh, Buyuk, Sampalan — where the fast boats disembark — and the ferry port in Sampalan. Sampalan is centrally located, with most of the island’s main attractions being nearby. Unlike Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida has a proper pier which makes for easy disembarkation.

Hotel transfers to ports

Most fast boat operators allow you to upgrade your package to include hotel transfers, which is a popular option for many travelers. You’ll be picked up from your hotel in Bali and when you reach Nusa Penida, you’ll enjoy a transfer to your accommodation on that side. This makes for convenient travel and is well worth the additional cost.

Guided tours to Nusa Penida from Bali

Another option is to book a guided Nusa Penida day trip from Bali. This way, an expert guide will handle your hotel transfers, boat tickets and travel itinerary. All you need to do is be ready and waiting in your hotel lobby at the scheduled pickup time and everything else is taken care of, allowing you to truly relax and enjoy Nusa Penida Island to the fullest.

Time on the move: How long is the journey to Nusa Penida from Bali?

The time it takes to get from Bali to Nusa Penida depends on the type of boat you choose for your journey. Another factor that may affect the time it takes to reach the smaller island is the weather conditions on the day, as rough seas and heavy rain may result in a slower journey.

With that being said, the two islands are less than 30 kilometers away from each other, so no matter which boat option you choose or the weather conditions on the day of your trip, you can expect a travel time of under 1.5 hours.

Fast boats : The quickest way to get from Bali to Nusa Penida is to take a fast boat from Sanur. The direct journey should only take around 30 minutes and you’ll enjoy comfortable seating alongside incredible views of the surrounding islands.

Ferries : Your other option is to take a ferry from Sanur to Nusa Penida, which should take roughly 45 minutes depending on the ferry option you choose. You could also take a slow boat to Nusa Lembongan and then take a local boat to Penida, but this would take you well over an hour.

Which is quickest? Taking the fast boat is definitely the recommended option. Not only is it quicker and easier than the ferry, but it is more comfortable and the price difference between the two options is also not too significant.

Budgeting the boat ride: How much should you expect to pay for a trip from Bali to Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida tours price

Boat rides between Bali and Nusa Penida are relatively affordable, with ferry tickets costing between US$8 and US$10 per person and fast boat tickets costing approximately US$20 per person.

Tickets with hotel transfers

Packages inclusive of hotel transfers on both sides typically cost around US$30 per person. However, the cost of these packages may fluctuate depending on the location of your accommodation in Bali and how many people are in your group.

Private speedboats

If you’re looking for a luxury option, you could always hire a private speedboat with a skipper for the day. This would eliminate the need to navigate public transport and you could choose your own departure time. However, you can expect to pay at easy US$300 for this type of service.

Should you book in advance?

While you can buy your boat tickets at the onsite ticket offices on the day of your trip, it is best that you secure your tickets online ahead of time. This way, you won’t have to wait in the long lines and you’ll actually enjoy slightly cheaper rates than if you were to buy onsite. Furthermore, boats can fill up very quickly during high season and booking in advance will ensure you get tickets for your preferred travel dates.

Remember to read reviews online ahead of time and book your tickets through a safe and trustworthy company.

Tour selection: What are the top-rated tours to Nusa Penida from Bali?

best Nusa Penida tours from Bali

If you’re looking to visit the island with a local guide, there are plenty of Nusa Penida day tours from Bali to choose from. The advantage of going on a tour is that your guide will take care of all your travel arrangements and ensure that you see the very best of what the island has to offer.

You can opt for a tour that provides you with a general overview of the island’s top attractions or choose an excursion that focuses on snorkeling and provides you with the opportunity to swim with manta rays and sea turtles.

How much do tours cost?

General tours typically cost between US$40 and US$60 for group excursions, where you’ll get the chance to meet other travelers from around the world. Private excursions, such as the Nusa Penida All-Inclusive Day Trip, typically cost around US$80 per person depending on the number of participants.

Tours that focus specifically on snorkeling, such as the Nusa Penida Manta Ray Experience, usually cost around US$80 for a group trip that’s inclusive of snorkeling gear. Private snorkeling trips usually cost at least US$150 per person for an all-inclusive experience.

If you’re looking for a luxury experience, you may be interested in a VIP Private Boat to Nusa Penida. You’ll get to explore the island with a private speedboat for the day, with no need to navigate public transport. You’ll enjoy a combination of snorkeling with manta rays as well as a land adventure. You can expect to pay roughly US$1,600 for a tour that caters for 3 people.

While private tours are more expensive, you’ll enjoy a personalized experience with a custom itinerary. Your guide will cater solely to the specific needs of you and your travel companions. Most tours take place in English, although some private excursions offer tours in other languages, such as French and Japanese.

Ideal visit timing: When should you plan your trip to Nusa Penida for the best experience?

While Nusa Penida can be visited at any time throughout the year, the optimal time to visit the island is during Indonesia’s dry season, which takes place between May and September.

This period is known for its warm dry weather, with very little chance of rain and great water visibility that is perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving. Visiting the island during the rainy season can really dampen your overall experience.

Keep in mind that the island is busiest during June and July, which are the peak months for tourism in Indonesia. However, Nusa Penida will still be a lot quieter than Bali, which can get quite chaotic during June and July.

Day trip essentials: What items are crucial to bring along to Nusa Penida?

snorkeling in Nusa Penida

Waterproof bag : It’s recommended that you pack all your day trip essentials into a waterproof daypack so that they are protected against potential splashes during your time on Nusa Penida. If you don’t have a waterproof bag, you can easily find one for sale in Bali.

Sun protection : Sun protection is one of the most important things to take with you for your Nusa Penida day trip. You’ll be enjoying beautiful beaches and the great outdoors, so make sure you pack a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Swimming gear : As you’ll probably be swimming and/or snorkeling, you should also bring along a swimsuit, towel and maybe even a change of clothes in case the outfit you’re traveling in gets wet along the way.

A charged camera : There will be dozens of amazing photo opportunities so make sure you bring your camera or a smartphone for taking pictures. You may want to bring a power bank and backup batteries just in case.

Good walking shoes : Wear comfortable walking shoes for exploring the island, but bring a pair of flip-flops along with for when it comes time to hit the beach.

Local currency : It’s also a good idea to bring some cash along with you as Nusa Penida’s ATMs (close to the island’s northern coast, where the boat terminals are located.) can sometimes be unreliable.

Getting around Nusa Penida: Is it a straightforward process?

When it comes to getting around Nusa Penida, you have a few different options available to you. The island is significantly smaller than Bali, but it is still the largest of the three Nusa islands and walking between all of the attractions is simply not feasible.

Private vehicles : While it is not possible to rent a car and self-drive during your time on the island, you can rent a vehicle with a private driver. This is a good option for if you have a lot of suitcases or want to enjoy the comfort of a car over a scooter.

Scooter rentals : Scooter rental is probably the most popular form of transport on Nusa Penida. There are scooter rental companies all over the island and it is not necessary to make a booking in advance. However, you should inspect the scooter you plan on hiring and make sure that it is in decent condition.

Take care when riding around the island on a scooter as many of the roads have potholes and are in need of improvements. Also keep in mind that complete darkness sets in around 45 minutes after sunset and you don’t want to be driving on Nusa Penida’s unlit roads after dark.

The signal can be faulty on the island so you can’t rely on Google Maps or similar apps to get you around. You may have to rely on asking locals for directions or a physical map to get from one attraction to another.

Guided tours to Nusa Penida : Because of the challenges associated with getting around the island on your own, guided Nusa Penida day trips from Bali are often preferred. This way, an experienced guide will handle your transportation needs and ensure you don’t get lost or put yourself in danger.

Nusa Lembongan visit: Should you include it in your itinerary?

Nusa Lembongan

If you have the time, you should definitely include the nearby island of Nusa Lembongan in your itinerary. While the islands are similar in many ways, they are still different enough some each other to make it worthwhile to visit both.

Nusa Lembongan may be smaller in size but it has many unmissable attractions of its own, including Devil’s Tears, the Mangrove Forest, Mushroom Beach, the Gala-Gala Underground House and so much more. The island is one of the top-rated destinations in Indonesia and is a firm favorite amongst tourists from all over the world.

Even if you only have a few hours available to you, it is worth your time to visit Nusa Lembongan while you are in the vicinity of the Nusa archipelago.

Island comparison: Nusa Lembongan versus Nusa Penida, which one stands out?

Both Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida are fantastic island destinations in Indonesia and it is very difficult to say if one is better than the other. The main difference between the two islands is that Nusa Penida is a lot larger than Nusa Lembongan, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Penida has more attractions.

Nusa Lembongan has been catering to tourists for a lot longer than Nusa Penida has, therefore has slightly better infrastructure and a wider variety of things to see and do. Nusa Lembongan also has better surf spots than Nusa Penida, while Penida has more remote beaches.

Both islands are very special in their own way, each boasting a variety of magnificent natural attractions, so why not visit both of them and decide which one is your personal favorite?

Exploring both islands: Is it possible to cover Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida in a single day?

It is definitely possible to visit both Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida in one day. The best way to do this would be through booking a boat tour that visits both islands. The two islands are separated by a very narrow waterway, which makes it easy to visit both islands in a single day.

Nusa Penida: Island Guide and 2 Days Itinerary

While we can agree that Bali deserves all the hype it gets, there’s much more to see outside of Bali. Just 30 minutes away, one can find the beautiful island of Nusa Penida.

Nusa Penida is located southeast of Bali. It belongs to the Klungkung Regency district, along with Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. Nusa Penida isn’t overly developed yet, which is its charm. It has little tourist infrastructure, but there are nice guesthouses and villas, seaside bars and restaurants where you can chill and drink, and of course amazing sights: cliff-side views, fine beaches, and snorkeling & dive spots .

Over the past years, there is an influx of tourists coming to Nusa Penida. A lot of these people are day trippers from Bali, off to see the Insta-famous Kelingking Beach.

P.S. If you’re planning a trip to Bali, don’t forget to read about our Essential Guide to Bali and our 6 Days Itinerary in Bali .

Things to know about Nusa Penida

Sanur port to nusa penida, by scooter/motorbike, by booking a tour, where to stay, where to eat, snorkeling tour, kelingking beach and other beaches, diamond beach and thousand islands, teletubbies hill and temple, 2 days itinerary in nusa penida, reminders and tips, what to read next:.

Here are some of the things you need to know about Nusa Penida.

  • Nusa Penida is easily accessible from Bali. There are different ports with passenger ferry bound for Nusa Penida.
  • It can be visited on a day trip. If you want to fully explore the island, allot 2-3 days.
  • There are limited ATMs in the island and hardly any establishments accept credit card. It’s best to bring enough cash with you.

How to Get to Nusa Penida

Getting to Nusa Penida is quite easy. There are different ports you can go to:

  • Sanur Beach

The easiest & most popular way to get to Nusa Penida is via Sanur Port. This was also our way to Nusa Penida. From our hotel in Ubud, we took a taxi to Sanur Port. We got tickets from Angel’s Billabong Fast Cruise.

There are 3 different ferry lines plying this route: Maruti Express, Angel’s Billabong Fast Cruise and Mola-Mola Express.

From Sanur Port, travel time to Nusa Penida is 30 minutes.

  • Ferry ticket costs 150,000 IDR one-way (P500 / $10).
  • Schedule starts at 7AM to 5PM

We recommend taking the first ferry trip at 7 or 7:30M to make the most of your time.

You can book your ferry tickets upon arrival in Sanur Port. You can also book via 12Go . It’s a bit more expensive but it will allow you to book in advance. As for us, the ferry tickets were included in the 2-day tour that we booked and we even got a small discount.

Reminder : Make sure to wear flip flops and shorts because you will have to wade into the water to get into the ferry.

How to Get Around

Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida

One important thing you should know is that the roads in Nusa Penida are in awful condition. It’s mostly rough roads with a lot of pot holes and some of them are very steep. Take this in mind when planning how you’re going to explore the island.

There is public transport but it’s limited. Taxis are hard to come by.

Here are your options on how to get around.

Once you get off at the port, you can easily rent a motorbike for the day. The cost is similar to Bali (Rp 75,000 IDR (P250 / $5).

  • Make sure to top up your gas at the stations near the port since there are fewer stations further inland.
  • Rent a motorbike only if you’re confident in driving.

You can find different packaged tours to Nusa Penida, with a pre-arranged itinerary depending on how long you will stay. This includes private car transport (good up to 4 people).

  • Our recommended tour service is by Linda Nyoman . He gave us a 2-day schedule and we’d customized it to add a snorkeling tour for an additional fee. Our tour included round-trip ferry tickets from Bali to Nusa Penida, private transport via van, snorkeling tour and lunch meals. The whole tour cost 1.2M IDR (P4400 / $90) for 2 people. Contact : email [email protected].
  • You can also book via Klook .

We recommend booking a tour as it’s easy and comfortable. If you’re in a group of people, it’s also cost efficient.

There are homestays and bungalows in Nusa Penida. Prices are a little more expensive compared to Bali, but not much.

Here are some of the most recommended ones:

Bintang Bungalow in Nusa Penida

  • La Roja Bungalows . One of the best resorts in Nusa Penida, with stylish rooms and a pool. Book via Agoda .
  • Bintang Bungalow . Located near Crystal Bay, with stylish rooms and a pool. Book via Agoda .
  • Bintang Penida Resort . A newly built resort, with stylish rooms and a pool. Book via Agoda .

We recommend booking in advance.

It’s easy to find warungs in Nusa Penida where you can get reasonably priced local dishes and even smoothie bowls. There area also sea-front bars and restaurants, where you can enjoy a drink while watching the sunset.

Here are some restaurants you should check out:

  • Amok Sunset Bar and Restaurant . Located in the west coast, this place is on the off-beaten path. Here you can enjoy drinks at a pool or dinner at a treehouse.

Our 2-day trip in Nusa Penida

We’re aware that most people only do a day trip to Nusa Penida. However, another blogger advised staying at least 2 days to see the Thousand Islands and Diamond Beach in particular.

As said above, we booked a package which includes a 2-day tour in Nusa Penida. The original itinerary includes the best tourist spots in Nusa Penida including Kelingking Beach, Angel’s Billabong and Crystal Beach. We asked to include a snorkeling tour, since I wanted to see the Underwater Buddha Temple.

From the port, our local guide fetched us in a van and we immediately started the tour.

The snorkeling tour includes four stops: Manta Point, Gamat Bay, Underwater Buddha Temple and GT Point.

We started the tour early in the morning, at about 9AM. Kat wasn’t feeling well, so I was the only one who signed up. I joined a group of tourists from Thailand whom I befriended.

Island hopping in Nusa Penida

Our first stop was Manta Point , which is a swimming ground for manta rays. The area was crowded with tourists so it was easy to bump into someone in the water.

I only saw one manta ray and felt sorry for it. I think that maybe it only wanted to swim in peace, since it tried to escape from everyone taking photos.

Manta Point was in the news for a while for waste problem, after a viral video of a diver swimming in garbage. I did see a few plastic cups floating in the water but otherwise the area was clean, so it’s probably that a clean-up was done after the story.

Manta Point in Nusa Penida

Next was Gamat Bay . This is filled with beautiful corals and fishes, so it’s perfect for snorkeling. Also, the water was clear. There was a particular area with strong currents that could easily pull a person away, so I had to be careful. Compared to Manta Point, there were only few tourists here so it was easy to appreciate the aquatic life underneath.

Gamat Bay, Nusa Penida

Our third stop is the one I was most excited about – the Underwater Buddha Temple .This is a recent underwater art exhibit, made up of a 2.5-meter tall Buddha statue surrounded by smaller statues. There is also a huge steel chair in the middle where you can sit and take photos.

Our boatman dropped us off in the site and said he’d waited on the other side. I thought this was easy. To my surprise, after jumping in the water, the current immediately dragged me away. I passed by a long rope which I held onto. I tried going against the current but I wasn’t moving forward. I saw the underwater temple fleetingly — I was struggling to keep afloat. I tried to go closer to the statue but my swimming prowess apparently wasn’t enough.

I grabbed onto another rope and pulled myself to another boat. From there, I went back to the water and let the current take me to the other side where our boat guide was waiting.

Underwater Buddha Temple in Nusa Penida

Our final stop for the snorkeling tour was the GT Point . GT stands for Giant Trevely, which is a type of big fish. Initially, I thought that it refers to Giant Tuna. The water here was too cold — I was shivering so I immediately went back to the boat. I didn’t see much, though I saw big fishes from afar.

Kelingking Beach is the most popular tourist spot in Nusa Penida. It’s a beach cove surrounded by a dinosaur-shaped cliff, which is why it’s also called T-Rex Island. The beach below has fine white sand and turquoise water. It may seem gentle from above, but the currents along the shore are strong and can knock you off your feet even if you’re just knee-deep in the water. Every year, a few people get swept away.

It takes about 30 minutes to get down to the beach, and the climb back up is no joke as well. The path is narrow, with bamboo posts as handrails.

We decided to stay at the viewpoint above. It was heavy with day trippers, but the view was wonderful and it’s easy to take good pictures.

Kelingking Beach, Nusa Penida

Next are  Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong . These two spots are only walking distance from each other. From the parking area, I followed the pathway for several minutes before getting to Angel’s Billabong. Kat still wasn’t feeling well, so she stayed behind.

Angel’s Billabong is a natural tidal pool surrounded by rock cliffs.

Angel's Billabong in Nusa Penida

Further ahead is the Broken Beach. It’s an arched tunnel over the ocean, which allows the water to flow into a pool.

Broken Beach was nice, but there wasn’t anything much to do except swim in the tidal pool and take pictures. I didn’t see any beach in the Broken Beach so I’m curious why the call it that. I wish Kat were with me, but I didn’t think she’d like the long walk.

Broken Beach, Nusa Penida

Our last stop for the day was Crystal Bay . Compared the the beaches we’d seen for today, this is the most commercial one. Crystal Beach is a long stretch of beach filled with people lying in lounge chairs and beanie bags under huge umbrellas. There is an islet nearby, but it looks like it requires a long swim or a small boat at the least.

I saw a set of broken stairs on the left part of the beach area and went there. The route was almost covered with bushes and there was nobody else going this way. It’s like Mary and the Secret Garden. The stairs dwindled down to an empty beach. There was a couple walking along the shore but no one else was there. It was quiet. I sat down and wondered why there weren’t many people here. Perhaps it’s too far for some people to hike.

Hidden beach in Crystal Beach, Nusa Penida

After the whole-day tour, our driver dropped us off in a bungalow where we’d booked for a night. A fan room with an outdoor bathroom with open ceiling, some potted plants and grass beside the shower. We appreciate the hospitality of the caretaker who welcomed us. Our place is walking distance from a minimart and a few eateries. I pampered Kat and bought her food.

We ended our first day in Nusa Penida with hot noodles and curry.

Nusa Penida – Day 2

We left early from our bungalow near the port area, but it was still a long drive to our first stop for the day: Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach. The weather was great and there were blue skies.

Atuh Beach is on the left side, while Diamond Beach is on the right.

When we arrived, Atuh Beach was on low tide and it didn’t seem inviting, so we didn’t go down to the beach.

Atuh Beach in Nusa Penida

Instead, we explored the cliff overlooking Diamond Beach, an isolated beach cove surrounded by cliffs. During our visit, the stairs going down wasn’t finished yet, so we stayed atop the cliff ( Update 2019 : the stairs is now fully done, so you can get to the Diamond Beach). The view here was great and it was a breath of fresh air.

Diamond Beach in Nusa Penida

We walked up to the small house on top of the cliff. We took pictures of the islets near Diamond Beach and the stone arc near Atuh Beach. The surrounding ocean was clear, we could see the seagrass.

Atuh Cliff, Nusa Penida

A few minutes away from Atuh Beach are the neighboring viewpoints called the Tree House (locally known as Rumah Pohon) and Thousand Islands .

From the parking area, you will need to walk and climb stairs to reach these viewpoints. It was exhausting, so it was good that we brought a bottle of water. We stayed in Thousand Island, which is named because of the several islands that can be seen from this spot. We counted 5 islands and Atuh Beach. Kat said this is her favorite place. We skipped climbing down to the treehouse because we were already spent from walking.

Stairs to TreeHouse, Thousand Island, Nusa Penida

After recovering from the walk, we went back and told our driver we were good to go.

Our next stop is the Teletubbies Hill . Kat thought this is where the children show was filmed, but we learned that it was only a resemblance. The hills have a distinct round shape, similar to the Chocolate Hills in Bohol.

To me, it seemed like a good place to lie down or enjoy a picnic. It also likes like somewhere you can play or fly a kite.

Teletubbies Hill, Nusa Penida

We also stopped by the Goa Giri Putri Temple . The temple is located inside a giant cave, with a narrow opening that serves as entrance.

We crawled into the narrow space and found ourselves inside a huge cavern, with sparse lights on selected corners. I wish we’d brought a flashlight to see better, as it could be very dark. A pathway leads to the main function hall where locals pray.

Goa Giri Putri Temple, Nusa Penida

The cave was our last stop on our 2 days tour in Nusa Penida.

We had lunch in a nice sea-side restaurant and and then took a short stop in a black-sand beach we passed by. We didn’t stay long because it was hot and there wasn’t much shade in the area. We took pictures and then our tour guide finally dropped us off in the port.

Random black-sand beach in Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida offers very different attractions from the usual scenery in Bali. We had a good time here.

In summary, here is our 2 days itinerary in Nusa Penida. Basically it covers the West Tour and East Tour.

Day 1 – Nusa Penida West Tour

  • Snorkeling (Manta Bay, Gamat Point, Buddha’s Underwater Temple, GT Point)
  • Kelingking Beach
  • Angel Billabong
  • Broken Beach
  • Crystal Beach

Day 2 – Nusa Penida East Tour

  • Atuh Beach and Diamond Beach
  • Thousand Islands and Tree House
  • Teletubbies Hill
  • Goa Giri Putri Temple

If you’re going to stay longer, you may also visit the off-beaten spots in Nusa Penida. Here are the attractions you can visit in a day:

  • Peguyanan Waterfall
  • Tembeling Natural Pool
  • Tembeling Beach
  • Banah Cliff Point

If you’re into diving, you might want to stay a little longer in the island. There are several dive spots accessible in Nusa Penida such as Liberty Wreck, which is one of the best dive sites worldwide .

Here are important tips when traveling to Nusa Penida.

  • As said above, rent a scooter only if you know what you’re doing . Currently, the road conditions in Nusa Penida aren’t ideal, with unpaved roads and pot holes. It’s easy to rent a scooter without a license or passport, but it’s still best to bring an International Driver’s License or a temporary driver’s license, which you can get on an office in Denpasar, Bali.
  • Get a pre-booked tour . Pre-booked tours are cheaper compared to tours offered on the spot.
  • The destinations in Nusa Penida are further than they appear in Google Maps . Most attractions are an hour apart.
  • Expect busy crowds in the West Tour . Nusa Penida used to be deserted a few years back, but now it’s heavy with tourists on a day trip to see Kelingking Beach. If you want a quieter trip, do the East Tour instead. Or better yet, stay overnight to cover both areas.
  • Bring protection from the sun . Similar to Bali, the weather in Nusa Penida is usually hot and humid. Bring sunblock, sunglasses, hat and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.

And that concludes our Travel Guide to Nusa Penida! Do you have any questions or suggestions? Let us know in the comment section below!

NUSA PENIDA DAY TOUR GUIDE (BALI, INDONESIA)

nusa penida day tour klook

Thinking of a day trip tour while in Bali? I am sure you have gotten to see all over the internet that T-rex shaped overlooking cliff. In this blog I will share with you my NUSA PENIDA DAY TOUR GUIDE (BALI, INDONESIA)

Overlooking the T-rex shaped cliff, a deep blue colored sea, a flock of tourists around, and those poses for that perfect Instagram photo shot, a great time for a laid back lazy beach trip and all that sorts were just some of the highlights you’d see from this tour.

Day Trip at Nusa Penida (West)

My mom was asking me “ Nath, where’s your photo with the dinosaur” asking me based on what she sees over her favorite youtubers who visits Bali hahaha!! Well, it isn’t really a dinosaur but the cliff shaped of the T-rex is what Kelingking Beach was known for. I’ll expound more of this later on.

It was indeed a very beautiful scenery! A paradise you may say. So read on,

  • Booking for your Nusa Penida Trip actually depends on your preference, the itinerary you are rooting for and the exact places you wanted to visit to. That is why checking everything in advance really pays well, it saves time, it sets your expectation and you get to book for the right tour.

WHERE TO BOOK FOR NUSA PENIDA TRIP :

  • The package cost Php 2,254 per person
  • Pick-up and drop off at the hotel, Van Transpo to Sanur Harbor and back
  • Round Trip Fast Boat ticket bet Sanur Harbor and West Nusa Penida (worth IDR 250,000 per pax ideally – if you’ll do it the DIY style)
  • Entrance Fees on all beach sites
  • A private driver to tour you around Nusa Penida and a guide for a photo adventure
  • Lunch and bottled water
  • We were 4 in the group for this Nusa Penida Trip you actually have the option to choose between the West side or East trip, most likely if you are staying just for a day.
  • If you have more days to spare, I suggest you book for 2 days and spend a night at Nusa Penida as well and let yourself immerse with the stunning view

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS TOUR? (ITINERARY FOR THE DAY)

Learning how early our call time would be for our Nusa Penida Tour, a night out wouldn’t really be much possible. We just had a quick night swimming over our beautiful hotel and rested for the rest of the night.

E9CFB102-2AC9-41C8-9689-B0E7FD3508C8

6:30AM – 7:15AM || Pick-up time from the hotel, we are lucky that I get to booked and stayed at the exact pick-up location in Seminyak (Seminyak Garden Hotel – try booking for this place as well!!! It was worth every penny! And very cheap and near to almost everything in Seminyak!!!) more of my discovery over my full Bali Travel Guide :  Bali Travel Guide for 7D/6N : Detailed Itinerary, Budget & Tips

CCED380D-B2E9-4C3A-A0F1-5633084BF113

8:00AM || It was almost around 45 minutes land travel trip all the way to Sanur Harbor port / terminal where the speed boat is docked for Nusa Penida. Trust me that it’s better to book for a tour with the inclusion of the pick-up and drop off as they’ll take care of you the entire time.

After waiting for a short time, we headed to the speed boat.

What to wear? – Imagine crossing the shore all the way to the speed boat by the beach, it would be best if you are swimming ready or not wearing a pants and the likes. I was wearing a swimsuit / bikini already the entire time so I could be ready anytime (*wink)

Travel time from Sanur harbor to Nusa Penida took around 1 hour.

Upon alighting at the port, the private car vehicle was waiting for us with my name on the sheet of paper – we knew he would be our guide / driver at the same time.

The advantage if you are in a group, you travel as if you hired the entire service as well. Well, on the other hand; travelling alone or with a friend with you – you get to be joined and team up with other travelers to complete the 4 or 5 pax per car.

These are the specific places we get to visit, please do note that the guide follow a strict timeline and it was very touristy when we visited so we really had to maximize our stay and make the most out of the scenery and the view.

11:00AM || Kelingking Beach

EE9312CB-47AB-4AB7-B9A2-B60E1BF84CE9

this famous Instagram spot shouldn’t be missed out in your Nusa Penida escapade. This was after an hour of travel time from Sanur HarborThis enchanting view over the cliff was everything. You may have the option to go down in as much as you can, but make sure you are ready to climb all the way back to the top of the cliff (*as per guide, it normally would take you around 1 – ½ hour all the way down the cliff)

*My Take-away : I actually thought that each of the site in Nusa was very close to each other, when it so happens that we needed to ride back to the car and travel for another 45mins – 1 hour for the next site to see. Imagine it was even lunch time when we had our first line of business for the day.

7E70B5CE-FFF5-4A96-BA2F-2F960515FF25

12:30NN || Since we were freaking hungry for the entire morning travelling without eating breakfast, we decided to go over the lunch first instead of going to the next place to see. The lunch was part of the package already so no need to pay, and they have certain Indonesian food option for you to choose at.

1:00PM || Broken Beach & Angel Billabong Beach

5C63B442-5139-4E71-9B91-897E2C43DCF3

After lunch we headed straight to these two beaches. It was very close to each other and just walking distance. The beauty of this place was really something remarkable, I just hated that we actually need to hurry up to go from one place to another because we were really caught off time.

3EBBA3A1-1DA1-4E2C-BF85-D01BAA6A484E

2:30PM || Crystal Beach

083A76EA-EEAA-43A5-8282-F6AE6027B670

we had to leave both Broken Beach and Angel Billabong then had to travel for another hour all the way to Crystal Beach.

*Notes : we actually got delayed for around 30 minutes in Broken beach, since one of my travel mate – Vin; left his entire bag along broken beach. We were so busy with our personal things, and a photo on this and that – but make sure to be cautious of all your things all the time!!! We were lucky that his bag wasn’t touched at all, it has all his money and his passport!!! So Imagine us being so so worried about it too.

Amongst the rest of the beaches, only Crystal Beach was swimmable and safe for everyone. We only had an hour left for this beach time as we need to be back in the port by 3:30PM!!! The beach sand was greyish black, the water was nice to swim at.

You can actually do snorkeling also in this beach, you just need to pay for additional for the snorkeling gears. So up to you. Food places around the beach is also available, so you may just also rest and chill by the beach for a while.

3:30PM || we readily went back to our car service and we all went all the way back to Sanur Harbor, it was freaking traffic the entire time in Nusa so we really need an hour to be back at the port.

4:30PM || we dock thru the speed boat once again, make sure you keep your receipt with you all the time. The water travel was actually really fun as well. There was rainbow saying hello to us, while we enjoy the nice breeze of the view and the ocean.

5:30PM || When we were back at the port, the first thing we ever thought was “we were extremely hungry!!!” we ate across the Warung in the port which was awesome as well, we get to try more and new Indonesia delicacy plus a lot of pasalubongs to take it with us.

we tried this Nasi Kampur ; it’s a Bali delicacy with a taste of everything. It is only IDR 20.000 per plate and it was nice to try. I am not a super fan of spicy food but this food did it’s wonder too.

3B50C70C-84EB-469B-A0A8-EE5890EE075B

If you haven’t shopped yet for rattan bags and the like, I say there is this cheap find  — “car turn into store” along the port you may want to check out.

The day was really tiring with all the rush over one place to another, so I say that staying for a night in Nusa Penida could have been better as well. *I promise to do this when I get back.

We rode back to our van, and all the way back to our hotel in Seminyak.

Nusa Penida Tour: The Perfect day trip from Bali

Nusa Penida Tour: The Perfect day trip from Bali

Nusa Penida is the little gem of Bali. Penida island is part of the Nusa Islands , is the biggest of the 3 but until now the least developed. By visiting Nusa Penida expect white-sand beaches with silky blue water, 200-meter high coastal cliffs drop, and yet untouched nature. It is recommended to either visit the island by a one-day Nusa Penida Tour or a 3-day Nusa Penida trip .

Things to see on a Nusa Penida Tour

During a Nusa Penida day tour, you can either explore the west or east coast of Penida Island. West is more popular since it is closer to the harbor. East is at least as beautiful and has fewer tourists. If you prefer to see both sides, it is better to do a 3-day Nusa Penida Trip .

This Nusa Penida travel guide explains both tour types so it will be easier for you to choose from.

West Coast Nusa Penida Tour

The west coast of Penida island has beautiful sights like Angel’s Billabong and Kelingking Beach . Combine this with Crystal Bay, Peguyangan waterfall and Broken Beach to have a day filled with incredible viewpoints and jaw-dropping nature.

Tip: It’s also a great option to switch Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong for Tembeling Natural Pool .

Kelingking beach

Kelingking beach is 100% sure the most spectacular place on Nusa Penida. White sand and a piece of land shaped like a dinosaur head. The view from the top is incredible but be prepared if you want to hike down to the beach. This hike down is a 45-minute incredibly steep path.

Angel’s Billabong & Broken Beach

Nusa Penida is full of spectacular shaped locations. Broken Beach is one of them. A 45-minute bumpy ride from KelingKing takes you to this spectacular gate.

A 150-meter walk from Broken Beach is a natural infinity pool where you can dip in and enjoy the clearest water you’ve ever swam in.

Here are all your hotel options in Nusa Penida.

A 150-meter high iron blue stairs down towards a tiny waterfall, which gives you the most scenic areas and a real test to your fear of heights. Around Nusa Penida are great Manta-Ray snorkeling and diving points. To do this, you would have to stay a little longer.

Tembeling Forest & Beach

For a more unique experience on Nusa Penida, we recommend you to visit Tembeling Natural Pool, forest and beach . Modify your west Nusa Penida tour by removing one of the other things to do on Nusa Penida .

East Coast Nusa Penida Tour

The east coast is a little more untouched. You will visit Atuh and Diamond Beach , Thousand Islands viewpoint, Rumah Pohon Treehouse and you can either choose between the underground temple Giri Putri or Teletubbies Hill.

Two picture-perfect beaches located very near each other. To get to those beaches you will have to decline via a stair which is quite challenging.

Price of a Nusa Penida tour

The price of a tour totally depends on what you like to see and the comfort you prefer on Penida Island. A day trip usually takes from 8 AM until 16 PM. Spend one night on Nusa Penida if you like to see both the east and west coast in a Nusa Penida tour.

nusa penida trip guide Thousand Islands

Private tour price A private Nusa Penida Tour with driver, car, boat, hotel transfers, and entrance fees usually starts from 750.000 IDR (~50 USD). Split the costs with two to four people and it will be cheaper than a shared van.
