History [ ]

Starships of this class were constructed at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards by 2371 . ( VOY : " Relativity ")

It quickly became a common fixture in Federation fleet deployments, appearing on the front lines of numerous engagements, including against the Borg at the Battle of Sector 001 in 2373 , and in the Dominion War , where several vessels of this class were assigned to Starfleet's Second Fleet , which participated in Operation Return in 2374 , the second Battle of Chin'toka , and the Battle of Cardassia in 2375 . They were also frequently stationed near Deep Space 9 during the war. ( Star Trek: First Contact ; DS9 : " Favor the Bold ", " Sacrifice of Angels ", " Statistical Probabilities ", " The Magnificent Ferengi ", " Afterimage ", and more)

An additional noted engagement happened in 2374 , where an Akira -class, and two Defiant -class escorts successfully engaged three Romulan D'deridex class -class warbirds after Tal Shiar agents hijacked and stole the Prometheus -class prototype USS Prometheus , and tried to take the ship back to Romulan space for study. The Akira -class, in conjunction with the Prometheus , and the Defiant -class escorts, destroyed one of the warbirds. ( VOY : " Message in a Bottle ")

At least one member of the class was within a light year of Earth in 2378 . ( VOY : " Endgame ")

Freeman's shelf model

Admiral Alonzo Freeman kept a model of an Akira -class starship in his ready room in 2381 . ( LD : " First First Contact ")

In 2384 , at least 8 ships of this class intercepted the USS Protostar in a restricted sector near the star Gamma Serpentis . They were part of an armada which included Centaur -type , Defiant -class , and Sovereign -class starships. ( PRO : " Mindwalk ", " Supernova, Part 1 ", " Supernova, Part 2 ")

In 2401 , four ships of this class were sent by Starfleet to join an armada opposing a unknown Borg vessel . The Borg liaison sent to the USS Stargazer briefly commandeered this vessel and others, before the crew managed to engage their auto-destruct system. ( PIC : " The Star Gazer ")

Later that year, eighteen ships of this class participated in Frontier Day celebrations near Sol Station . Along with the rest of the fleet, these ships were seized by the Borg Collective after their younger crews were assimilated by a Borg signal transmitted via Jack Crusher . ( PIC : " Võx ", " The Last Generation ")

By 2402 , at least two ships of the class, the USS Sentinel , and the USS Wersching were retired from service, and placed on display at the Fleet Museum in orbit of Athan Prime . ( PIC : " Võx ", " The Last Generation ")

Overview of design

The Akira -class design ditched Starfleet 's usual saucer-secondary hull-nacelle design, and more closely resembled the NX-class with its catamaran shaped hull. The engineering section was tucked under the main saucer, which housed the main deflector , and some of the ship's tactical systems. The nacelles were connected via long catamaran type structures, which in turn connected to a large weapons pod, housing several photon torpedo launchers. The catamaran pylons offered a degree of protection for the main bridge , which retained its traditional location at the top of the saucer. ( Star Trek: First Contact ; DS9 : " Call to Arms ", et al.)

Tactical systems [ ]

Akira class in neutral zone

An Akira -class firing forward phasers

The Akira -class design incorporated a multitude of tactical systems, including at least three phaser arrays , and housed numerous photon torpedo launchers along the port and starboard sides of the ventral primary hull, at least one launcher forward of the deflector, and several located on the aft weapons pod, which rotated into place before firing. ( Star Trek: First Contact ; LD : " Grounded "; PRO : " Supernova, Part 1 ")

Command and control systems [ ]

By 2401 , the computer systems on board the class had been overhauled to include the Fleet formation mode , also known as Starfleet emergency protocol NX12.11, designed to place all Federation starships within a fleet under the automated control of the Starfleet mainframe. ( PIC : " Võx ")

Background information [ ]

The name of the ship class was never mentioned on screen, but is derived from production sources.

The total number of Akira -class vessels present at Frontier Day was established by Picard Research Assistant Jörg Hillebrand . [1]

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia  (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 14), the Akira -class was named after the anime fantasy film Akira . " Along with the Lockheed P-38 Lightning , the Akira -class starship helped to inspire Doug Drexler 's design of the NX-class Enterprise from Star Trek: Enterprise . "

According to designer, Alex Jaeger , " This was my gunship/battlecruiser/aircraft carrier. It has 15 torpedo launchers and two shuttlebays – one in front, with three doors, and one in the back. I really got into it with this one, with the whole idea that the front bay would be the launching bay, and then to return they'd come into the back, because they'd be protected by the rest of the ship. " ( Star Trek: The Magazine , July 1999 , Issue 3)

A design sketch of the USS Akira shown the vessel bearing the registry NCC-2497. In an unpublished interview with author Larry Nemecek , designer Jaeger said he simply used the four-digit number of his then-phone extension for that registry; to conform to Starfleet practice, the number "6" was added by Mike Okuda and the film's art department to make "62497," a number then approved by producer Rick Berman . At the same time, Jaeger said, two other ship names and registries were approved as back-ups, if needed, to the USS Thunderchild actually seen on film as NCC-63549: the USS Rabin (named after former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin ) as NCC-63293, and the USS Spector (NCC-65549). The ship scale sheet showing the back-up names and registries can be found on John Eaves' blog .

The latter ship's name has appeared on screen in a graphic from the Star Trek: Picard episode " Vox ". The CGI file used for the Akira -class seen in the Voyager episode " Message in a Bottle " was ostensibly the Spector , and was used by the Star Trek Fact Files . The ship allegedly appeared in one of the battle scenes from the sixth and seventh seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , but this has not been verified.

The scale of the CGI mesh, according to a January 20, 1998 post in the newsgroup alt.tv.star-trek.ds9, by DS9 Visual Effects Supervisor David Stipes , was 860 feet or 262.13 meters, the length used when he blocked shots in DS9. [2] However, the measurement used by Visual Effects Supervisor Gary Hutzel , according to an in-house chart dated 5/15/98, was 840 feet. [3]

According to a size chart of Alex Jaeger, the Akira -class would be roughly 500 meters (1640.4 ft) in length. [4]

The Decipher role-playing games supplement Starships lists several Akira -class starships, including USS Geronimo ( β ) (NCC-62501), USS Osceola ( β ) (NCC-62743), USS Black Elk ( β ) (NCC-62878), USS Nez Perce ( β ) (NCC-62891), USS Mateo ( β ) (NCC-63002), USS Red Cloud ( β ) (NCC-63306), and USS Susquehanna ( β ) (NCC-63419).

The Activision PC game Star Trek: Bridge Commander includes the USS Devore ( β ) (NCC-64088), USS Geronimo ( β ) (NCC-69302), and USS Kali ( β ).

The Activision PC game Star Trek: Armada includes the USS Jupiter ( β ) (NCC-71267) and USS Templar ( β ), as well as many others. In both this game and the sequel, Star Trek: Armada II , these vessels have an advanced weapon called the "chain reaction pulsar ( β )" which bounces a bolt of energy off of enemy shields, damaging several ships consecutively. The Jupiter was also a promotional card for the Star Trek Customizable Card Game , where it was listed as being "under the command of Captain Satelk ."

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Dominion Wars includes the USS Singh ( β ).

Star Trek: Away Team includes the USS Leyte Gulf ( β ) (NCC-71427).

The Akira -class is featured in the game Star Trek: Starfleet Command III , where it is classified as a heavy cruiser.

The Xbox 360/PC game Star Trek: Legacy allows control of Akira -class ships as cruisers with names such as USS Akira , USS Spector , USS Rabin , and USS Thunderchild .

The Akira -class is featured in Star Trek Online as the prototypical example of a "Strike Wing Escort", a class of tactical starship blending the weaponry an escort with the capacity to field smaller vessels such as shuttlecraft , runabouts , or attack fighters in combat. Other Strike Wing Escort classes fielded by Starfleet with designs derived from the Akira -class include the game-original Armitage ( β ) , Alita ( β ) , and Thunderchild ( β ) classes. The in-game model has been updated multiple times to improve its level of detail and make it more screen accurate, the most recent of which was used in Star Trek: Picard . In 2024, the game released a new mission depicting the Battle of Wolf 359 in a Holodeck simulation where players are embodying one of the 40 fleet vessels engaged against Locutus' Borg Cube . One Akira -class ship, the USS Kaneda , is depicted as one of the destroyed ships during the battle. Her registry number is NX-62498 which suggest it was a prototype years prior the initial launch of the USS Akira commission .

Akira class

The Akira class fast attack heavy cruisers were designed for superior speed, durability, and firepower, and was capable of multiple mission types, including first strike, reconnaissance, incursion, and perimeter defense, as well as colonization support and planetary evacuations. [1] The Akiras were produced at the Antares Fleet Yards on Antares IV , [2] as well as at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on Mars . [3] First commissioned in 2367 , [4] the Akira class was the first vessel class authorized by the Perimeter Defense Directive (PDD). Other classes developed under this classified directive—including the Norway , Steamrunner class , and Saber clases—were brought into active service over the next several years. [5] [6] [1]

Of the twelve new ship classes placed into accelerated development by the PDD, the Akira class emerged as one of the most versatile. [6] The Akira class was one of the first Starfleet designs since the Andor class [7] to focus primarily on superior firepower and the projection of force in a quick and decisive manner. [1] Armed with both photon and quantum torpedoes, [8] six Type X Phaser arrays, [2] the Akira class possessed a devastating first-strike capability. [1] The Akira class also incorporated three quick-pressure shuttlebays; the single forward shuttlebay served as the primary launching facility, while the two aft bays were typically used for shuttle recovery. Shuttlecraft ranged from standard multi-role craft like the Type 8 Shuttlecraft to specialized fighters, which could be used for picket defense or patrol duties. [1] Squadrons of 30-50 [6] such support craft allowed the Akira class to fulfill a unique support role, and to project a Starfleet presence further than most other starships. [1]

Originally envisioned merely as the test-bed for new phaser and torpedo technologies, the Akira class was not initially intended for mass production or as a front-line combat vessel. Following the destruction of a sizable portion of Starfleet's forces during the Battle of 359 , the Akira class was pressed into development, bringing the experimental class into the spotlight under the auspices of the PDD. [1] This mission redesign coincided with increased Cardassian crises and the Dominion War , and Starfleet commissioned many more PDD ships than Starfleet Command had initially anticipated, desperate to throw a generally proven design onto the front lines. [6]

The most noteworthy deployment of the Akira class was, perhaps, the defense of Sector 001 during the Borg incursion of 2373. Akira class vessels, including the U.S.S. Thunderchild NCC-63549 , performed with distinction during the incident. [8] Limited engagements against Cardassian and Tholian forces also helped to bolster confidence that the Akira class was, indeed, a viable design. Wide-scale production began shortly before the outbreak of the Dominion War ,, which would again extract a terrible toll on all sides. Conflicts at the Chin'toka system and Deep Space 9 during Operation Return would serve to ensure the Akira class' place in history. [1]

Forgotten Trek

Designing the Akira Class

The Akira class was one of the four computer-generated starships that appeared in the battle with the Borg early in Star Trek: First Contact . It became the favorite of the Industrial Light and Magic artists who created it.

One designer, Alex Jaeger, recalled that the radically different look of the ships in the battle was born out of necessity.

“The main reason they look really different is that from a distance, the producers wanted them to be completely new looks, because we introduced a new Enterprise in the film and didn’t want it to get lost,” he told Star Trek: The Magazine in 1999.

They initially planned to have at least one ship that we could get closer to camera. That was the Akira , so it got the most attention to detail. It wound up being almost as big as the Enterprise -E — the “E” is longer, but the saucer section is almost the same size.

Akira concept art

It was the one design the producers liked instantly, said Jaeger. “It has some of the feel of the old USS Reliant NCC-1864 and its rollbar effect, but with a catamaran-style with the split hull design.”

In the side view you almost can’t see the bridge because between the sides of the hull, down between the two sections, is a protective device.

Jaeger produced several drawings that depicted parts of the ship in greater detail for First Contact and the vessel went on to appear on several episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Voyager .

Akira class

The Akira class was a Federation heavy cruiser that came into service with Starfleet during the latter half of the 24th century . One of Starfleet's more combat oriented vessels the Akira saw extensive service in the 2370s against the Borg and the Dominion .

Design features [ ]

An unconventional Starfleet design, the Akira has several notable features. Externally the most obvious is the catamaran engineering hull that is connected to the top of the saucer section . Between the catamaran hull at the rear of the vessel is a weapons pod containing several torpedo launchers . ( Star Trek: First Contact )

Because the ship's designers tried to fit so many tactical systems into the saucer section, the earliest ships of the class suffered from highly-stressed spaceframes, and almost all of them suffered structural defects. Although these were eventually rectified, a number of the early Akira ships were retired from front-line service at the end of the Dominion War because of this reason, and used primarily for training and tactical war games. ( Starship Independence : " Summon the Heroes ")

Also, in the early designs, the ship's magazine was situated centrally, heavily armoured and located deep inside the saucer, with an elaborate ammunition loading system that fed clusters of launchers around the outer hull of the ship. This design attempted to maximize the valuable center space of the hull, while improving ship safety from a catastrophic loss of the ship, in the event of a fire or magazine explosion. ( Starship Independence )

Each launch cluster was armoured heavily on the inside and thinly on the outside, in a way that would deflect an explosion outwards if one of the launchers was damaged in battle. ( Starship Independence )

Another unusual feature of the through-deck shuttlebay located in the saucer section. The large bay had access points at the bow of the ship as well as at the rear of the saucer, located between the engineering hulls. This large bay allowed the Akira to act as a carrier for smaller craft such as shuttles and attack fighters . ( Star Trek: The Magazine Volume 1, Issue 3 )

sed as Captains for ships or as the Admiral for a fleet. Hayes will give at attack increase to friendly ships within range one while Shanthi provides reroll capabilities when attacking.Wave 17 introduces the use of Time Tokens to Star Trek Attack Wing and the U.S.S. Thunderchild expansion has three upgrades which use or reference this new mechanic. Due to the combat function of the ship, players will not be surprised to see the inclusion of Photon Torpedoes and Quantum Torpedoes. Both require the placement of 3 Time Tokens when used in an attack. To get greater use out of the weapon upgrades, player will want to consider using the Rapid Reload upgrade which allows a player to place only 1 Time Token on a weapon upgrade when it is used in an attack. The expansion also provides three new Elite Talents to help increase the efficiency of a fleet. Intercept allows a player to shift the focus of an attack when their ship is also in the firing arc of an opposing ship. Persistence can reward a successful attack by providing the chance for additional damage to be scored against a hit opponent’s ship. When running the Federation Task Force elite talent, players gain the a bility for m ultiple ships to take a Target Lock action as a free action. The Federation player will be facing an uphill battle as they face an opposing force twice their size in the Federation Task Force mission. Can the Federation fleet break through the Dominion blockade and retake DS9 or will the Dominion fleet be able to stall the Federation player long enough to remove the minefield from in front of the wormhole thus providing safe passage for their Gamma Quadrant reinforcements?Visit NECA/WizKids for additional information about Star Trek: Attack Wing, and keep an eye on StarTrek.com for news about future NECA/WizKids products.

The Legendary Akira Multi-Mission Command Cruiser embodies the finest traditions of Starfleet . A command and control vessel fully equipped to handle delicate diplomatic situations of all kinds, including the sort that suddenly devolves into violence, the Akira stands testament to the need to be resolute and reasonable both. The universe is and will always be wondrous and dangerous, hopeful and threatened, so long as it is alive and free. As beings come together for greater and greater endeavors, the subtle creep of entropy lurks like a shadow, corrupting the powerful as all power corrupts and tempting the strong by virtue of their strength. Knowledge, exposure to new ideas and new cultures, and simple peaceful contact is the best vaccine. It is the enduring mission of Starfleet to drive back the darkness of ignorance. This ship is powerful enough to boldly go, versatile enough to meet new life and new civilizations, and should the worst come to pass, is fully capable of deploying that most universal cure for the power-mad: a Photon Torpedo .

Star Trek legend calls his Strange New Worlds season 3 murder-mystery “the best episode of television I’ve ever done"

Season 3 is expected to drop in 2025

star trek

Star Trek actor and director Jonathan Frakes has some high praise for Strange New Worlds season 3.

"[It's] the best episode of television I’ve ever done," Frakes told Variety , referring to a Hollywood murder-mystery episode he directed. The actor-director starred as Captain William Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation and began directing episodes during the show's third season. He went on to helm Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and episodes of almost every subsequent live-action Star Trek TV show including Voyager, Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds.

Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the starship Enterprise as they embark on intergalactic adventures that take place in the 23rd century. Oscar-nominated screenwriter Akiva Goldsman and Ugly Betty writer Henry Alonso Myers serve as showrunners. The cast includes Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, and Rebecca Romijn.

The series premiered in on Paramount Plus, the home for all things Star Trek, in 2022 and became the most-watched original Star Trek series on the network. Season 2 was greenlit in January 2022 and aired in June 2023. Season 3 was announced in March of last year, but production was delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 does not yet have a release date, but is expected to hit Paramount Plus sometime in 2025. For more, check out our list of the best new TV shows coming your way in 2024 and beyond.

Sonequa Martin-Green Has 'Settled Into' Her 'Worth as a Black Woman in a Way That I Would Not Have Imagined' (Exclusive)

"It has meant a great deal to stand in this position and to have, in a way, grown to fit the position," the actress told PEOPLE of playing Star Trek's first Black female captain

akira star trek

Sonequa Martin-Green is embracing her worth.

The actress portrays Star Trek: Discovery ’s Michael Burnham, the first Black female captain in the long-running franchise, and recently spoke with PEOPLE about how the groundbreaking role has changed her.

"Since the impact that the show has had on my life has changed over time, it's really hard to answer that question because I feel a certain way about it right now, but I'm going to feel even differently a month from now,” Martin-Green, 38, said at SCAD TVFest in Atlanta on Feb. 8 when asked how being on the series has changed her career. “I'm going to feel even differently five years from now. And it's hard for me to say how it's impacted me when I know that there is still more to come from it.”

Reflecting, Martin-Green shared that playing the protagonist has helped her realize and accept a new level of “worth.”

"I've settled into my worth as a Black woman in a way that I would not have imagined that was facilitated by the story, that was facilitated by playing Michael Burnham and then Captain Michael Burnham,” she continued. “And then, by the connections that I've made with the people that tell this story. Those connections, they're the kind that ripple throughout the rest of your life.”

Still, Martin-Green doesn’t plan on stopping — and said there’s room for even more personal evolution, telling PEOPLE, “It has meant a great deal to stand in this position and to have, in a way, grown to fit the position. And I'm still growing to fit it.”

She explained, “It's like on one hand I understand that I don't need to do that, but then at the same time it's like that position is greater than me, so I'll just always be growing into it.”

The Walking Dead alum became emotional at the idea of being able to show her 9-year-old son, Kenric Justin III, the CBS series one day, giving him a chance to see her star as a Black lead.

“He hasn't seen it yet,” said Martin-Green, who shares Kenric III and 3-year-old daughter Saraiyah Chaunté with husband Kenric Green, 41. She added that she’s “excited” for the moment Kenric III and Saraiyah — who wasn’t born yet when Martin-Green began playing Captain Burnham — are ready to tune in to the series.

“I mean, I could really cry talking about what I might be able to lead by example, what I might be able to show them by example and teach them from what I've experienced and how they might benefit from it,” said the mom of two. “That's everything right there.”
