Castello Banfi Wine Tasting at L'Enoteca

If you're a TravelSort Client staying at Castello Banfi Il Borgo, you'll enjoy a complimentary wine tasting for two, accompanied by fresh bread and a plate of Tuscan cheeses and cured meats (a 64 EUR value).

You have a choice of tasting either three Sangiovese wines (including two Brunellos) or three Supertuscans, which are blends. If you're simply visiting Castello Banfi, you can pay for a tasting of three wines without the cheese and meat plate for EUR 15.

Castello Banfi Wine Tasting: Sangiovese and Brunello, or Supertuscans

The three of us enjoyed the very generous cheese and cured meat plates. My husband and I, who generally drink full-bodied and fruit-driven Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Malbec or Syrah, liked the Cum Laude best, followed by the Brunello 2009.

Castello Banfi Winery Tour Details

Note that you will need to take your own car from the meeting point by the Enoteca to the winery, following the guide in his/her vehicle.

Castello Banfi Winery Tours Meet in the Enoteca Wine Shop

Castello Banfi Winery Tour

The meeting place for the Banfi Winery Tour is the Enoteca, and we were a group of about 15 or so. We followed our guide by car to the winery, which, once we got back to the main road, was the next right. We were given visitor badges before entering the fermentation part of the winery. Castello Banfi won “Winery of the Year, Europe” in the 2015 Winemaker Challenge, so this honor was proudly displayed:

Castello Banfi 2015 Winery of the Year, Europe Award

The fermentation area was one of the most interesting parts of our tour, since Banfi holds a patent on its hybrid oak and stainless steel fermentation tanks. The oak imparts flavor, but the stainless steel at the bottom makes them easier to clean.

Castello Banfi Winery Tour: Hybrid Oak and Stainless Steel Fermentation Tanks

After fermentation, the grapes are pressed and the resulting wine filtered, although none of this was in use during our July visit, since harvest doesn't take place until August-October, with the white grapes harvested first, then the red grapes. About half the grapes are harvested by hand (all of the grapes for Banfi's more exclusive vintages) and about half the grapes are harvested by machine. During the harvest, about 500 people are employed by Castello Banfi–double the usual number.

Castello Banfi Winery Tour: Pressing Area

We then walked to the aging area, where barrel upon barrel of wine was aging in French oak. The casks bear both the stamp of the Italian cooper and the French forest where the wood comes from, as well as a bar code to track the exact wine inside. The oak barrels are replaced every 5 years, since at that point the oak no longer imparts much flavor to the wine.

Castello Banfi Winery Tour: Aging in French Oak Barrels

In the cellar, no air conditioning is needed–it's the perfect cool temperature year round. Here we saw some even larger oak barrels, and some of the decor was, appropriately enough, fashioned out of wine bottles.

Castello Banfi Winery Tour: Giant French Oak Barrels

Especially eye-catching was this wine bottle chandelier:

Castello Banfi Winery Tour: Wine Bottle Chandelier

The Verdict

After several busy days in the Amalfi Coast area, viewing Pompeii, Paestum and Herculaneum, we were happy to enjoy a relaxing stay at Castello Banfi, including this brief but interesting winery tour. Castello Banfi has the largest production of Sangiovese grapes in the Montalcino area and produces the majority of Montalcino Brunello, so it has quite an advantage relative to smaller producers in being able to use only the best grapes from its vineyards in more challenging growing seasons.

We also enjoyed our complimentary Virtuoso wine tasting, with cheese and meat platter, at the L'Enoteca. The wine glasses were helpfully labeled with a card stating the wine's name and vintage, and there was no problem at all to share the cheeses and meats with our son, or to obtain drinking water.

If you've taken Castello Banfi's winery tour or done a tasting at the L'Enoteca, what was your experience?

Castello Banfi (Winery in Montalcino)

I can't say enough good things about..., perfect spot to feel toscana. great view,..., my wife and i had a great..., da visitare, castello banfi: una delle cantine storiche del..., meraviglioso in tutto, sono stata alla cantina banfi non potete..., about winery and wines.

Designed to protect the integrity and richness of the grape, the winery employs state of the art technology, the result of revolutionary technical research and innovation. And in this same philosophy, based on continual research, that a number of projects came to be on our estate, including the completion of our “Horizon” microvinification area. This project, entirely conceived and developed by and at Banfi, is made up of a series of expedient high level solutions undertaken to improve upon each phase of winemaking. he tremendous undertaking for vinification is followed by a long silent rest in wood, where the great wines of Banfi, principally reds, evolve over the passage of time and refine their most distinctive characteristics of strength, elegance and longevity. More than 7000 customized barrels, laid out in orderly rows, and large casks make up the heart of Banfi, which beats in the silent and peaceful ambience surrounding our winery.

The wines of Banfi are born of a passion and love for unique terroirs, from continuous research, and from the intimate knowledge of different territories and the ability to marry time tested and respected techniques with innovative solutions in both the vineyard and the winery. The splendid vineyards of Montalcino and Chianti, of Piedmont and the Tuscan coast, are the ideal cradle for wines of great character and outstanding quality. In recent years, Banfi has grown significantly its range of wines.

Castello Banfi Brunello

slide-image

Brunello di Montalcino was Italy’s first wine to be accorded DOCG status, a testament to its aristocracy, balance and fabulous proclivity for aging.

Follow us on Social Media

Banfiwinesusa.

castello di banfi wine tour

A refined and generous Brunello, exhibiting plum, cherry, strawberry and even floral flavors. This strives for elegance, achieving it with harmony and a line of fine-grained tannins on the lingering finish. There's ample fruit midpalate that resonates on the mineral finish, showing fine definition. Best from 2026 through 2040.

castello di banfi wine tour

A beautiful red with cedar, mushroom and cherry character, as well as hints of sandalwood. It’s medium-bodied and very polished with loveliness and finesse that comes through clearly. A wine to drink young, but will age very nicely. Drink or hold.

castello di banfi wine tour

The nose leans sweet, with notes of vanilla, cherry and cola, but undertones of citrus, cloves, fennel, salt and pepper playfully poke holes in that sweetness. On the palate, raspberries provide reinforcements, but polished tannins and aggressive acidity maintain balance.

castello di banfi wine tour

Round, fleshy and succulent, exuding black cherry, blackberry, violet and rosemary flavors. This has a glycerol feel, fine balance and harmony, with a long, fruity, savory and minerally aftertaste. Combines power and energy. Best from 2025 through 2043.

castello di banfi wine tour

Castello Banfi brings us this classic expression of the vintage. Their 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is hearty and dark with a level of distinguished power (with 15% alcohol) and sophistication that you only get with Brunello, a wine that by law ages for five years before its commercial release. Dark plum and blackcurrant segue seamlessly to spice, tar and black earth. The fruit ripeness is opulent and contrasted against elegant acidity and polished tannins. You don't need to wait long to enjoy.

This has a pretty nose of dried roses, cocoa powder, red tea, hazelnut skins, cherries, plum stones and sandalwood. Full-bodied with very finely-knit tannins and zippy acidity. So much life and energy. Drink from 2023.

This red is defined by the strawberry, cherry and floral aromas and flavors, graced by notes of tar, tobacco, eucalyptus and wild herbs. Firm and unforgiving on the finish for now, yet stays persistent and lively through the long aftertaste. Best from 2025 through 2042.

Subtle aromas of scorched earth, forest floor and mature berries mingle with a eucalyptus note. The full-bodied palate features cherry marinated in spirits, prune, roasted coffee bean and licorice framed in close-grained tannins. You'll also notice the warmth of alcohol on the close. While it reflects the heat of the vintage, it also shows polish and restraint. Kerin O’Keefe

Really fresh and vivid with sliced lemon and apple heading into cherry and floral undertones. It’s medium- to full-bodied with fine tannins and a vivid and bright finish. This is so drinkable and pretty for the hot and dry 2017 vintage, which produced many heavy Brunellos. Drink now or hold.

Intense, with tension between the bright strawberry and cherry fruit flavors and the compact feel of the tannic structure. Wild herb, almond and earth accents add detail. There is a lot going on in this red, stretched tightly. Long finish. Best from 2024 through 2042.

A rich, earthy style that offers plum, cherry, iron and cigar box flavors, with plenty of power. Broad in profile, ends with savory elements of forest floor and wild herbs. Best from 2023 through 2040.

Camphor, rose and new leather aromas form the nose along with a whiff of baking spice on this vibrant red. Polished and taut, the savory palate offers spiced cranberry, red cherry and star anise before finishing on a coffee note. Lithe, refined tannins and fresh acidity provide balanced support. Drink 2022–2028. Kerin O’Keefe

Lots of plum and dark-berry character with citrus, cedar and sandalwood. Very pure Sangiovese. Full-bodied with firm, racy tannins and cool, vivid fruit at the finish. Some mineral, tar and steel undertones. Needs time to open and soften. Better than the 2015. Try after 2023.

castello di banfi wine tour

In an unusual twist of fate for 2015, the burly tannins cover the cherry and plum fruit, lending this a monolithic impression. The grip is not astringent, however, and this features ample fruit in the end. Finishes with a touch of heat, along with iron and tobacco accents. Best from 2023 through 2040.

This is rich, maintaining a sense of elegance and vibrancy. Cherry, plum, leather, tobacco, iron and earth flavors mingle, backed by a solid structure. Finishes long and satisfying. Best from 2021 through 2035.

So many spices line the nose here including cinnamon, cardamom, aniseed and walnuts. But there’s no shortage of red plums and dried cherries either. Balanced and suave, this is a sophisticated Brunello with a sleek frame of tannins and subtle yet persistent acidity. Drink from 2021.

Beautiful and complex on the nose with chanterelle mushrooms and plums and cedar undertones. Medium to full body, very fine tannins and a long and juicy finish. All in richness and finesse. Well crafted. Drink now.

Cherry and plum flavors highlight this well-structured red, along with notes of leather, earth and wild herbs. Firms up as the dense tannins come into play on the finish. Best from 2022 through 2037. 48,350 cases made. –BS Issue Jun 30, 2018

Forest floor, wild berry, coffee and toasted oak aromas come together on this. The medium-bodied palate is on the lean side, offering sour cherry, tobacco leaf, espresso and a saline note alongside lithe tannins. Drink 2020–2028.

This really explodes with ripe fruit such as dried strawberries and cranberries as well as leather and tobacco. Full body with lots of round tannins but fresh acidity and a long, remarkably savory finish. Drink now or hold. Publish Date: Friday, March 2, 2018.

A dense, burly style, displaying cherry, iron, leather, earth, tobacco and spice flavors. Unyielding and compact now, yet also complex and long. Best from 2022 through 2035. 250 cases imported.

A textbook Brunello, mingling cherry and berry fruit with bitter almond, iron, sanguine and tobacco notes. Well-structured and harmonious, this should rein in the tannins with a few years of aging. Best from 2020 through 2033. 8,000 cases imported.

A sleek and pretty red with plum and light chocolate character plus hints of walnuts. Medium to full body and fine tannins. Shows the ripe balance of the 2012 vintage for Brunello. Drink or hold.

Aromas of eucalyptus, baked plum, leather and licorice complement the chocolate, leather and tar flavors. On the savory side, with dusty tannins finishing balanced and long. Best from 2016 through 2028. –BS Wine Spectator Online

Fabulous aromas of dried rose petal, orange peel, and oyster shell with hints of dark fruits. Full body, very fine tannins with a mineral, berry and orange peel undertone. Real Tuscan dust undertone. A structured and salty and savory finish. Better in 2017.

Primary Grape

The name Sangiovese comes from the Latin sanguis Jovis, meaning "blood of Jove." Its color mirrors its etymology: The wines range from brick red to copper-tinged, and can be quite concentrated. Although the grape is originally from southern Italy, the central region of Tuscany boasts the best Sangiovese wines in the world. It is the most widely planted grape variety in the country.

Montalcino red wines.

Brunello di Montalcino Castello Banfi

Description

A classic from Banfi in Montalcino.

Technical notes

Soil: vineyards in the hill area of the estate, with low to moderate incline. The soils develop on different types of sediments, from the clay sands of the marine Pliocene, deep soils with abundant and calcareous stones, to the gray-blue clays which are moderately deep mineral soils that tend to retain humidity.

Trellising System: spurred cordon – Banfi alberello Vine Density: 2400 - 5500 vines/ha. Hectar Yield: 65 q/ha.

Sangiovese.

Method of production

Fermentation: in temperature-controlled (27-29°C) hybrid French oak and stainless-steel Horizon tanks

Aging: 80% in French oak casks (90-60 hl.) and 20% in French oak barriques (350 l.) for 2 years

The winemaker comment

A rich and elegant Brunello, both in structure and in olfactory expression. Brilliant ruby red with garnet-colored reflections, on the nose the aroma is sweet and fruity, the hints of fresh red fruit stand out, which combine perfectly with the more complex notes of licorice and pipe tobacco. The structure is powerful, and the palate is pleasantly enveloped by a consistent tannic texture, well balanced by a pleasant acidity. Extremely persistent with excellent aging potential.

Food pairings

It pairs particularly well with rich and tasty dishes. Perfect as a meditation wine.

Overall, we both loved the complexity of the Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino. All the sensual elements supported the unadulterated Sangiovese. Though very drinkable now, don't hesitate to cellar this wine. At $69.99, it's pricey but this wine will cellar well and maturity will only further enhance its great qualities.
