Wine and Food: A Perfect Pairing Explore the Seneca Lake Wine Trail with unique events throughout the year

There is no better way to gain an understanding of wine than to pair it with food. The Seneca Lake Wine Trail wants to break down the barriers of the perceived complexities of wine with casual, enjoyable experiences that are educational and delicious, all at the same time. The Trail recently revealed its full slate of wine and food pairing experiences for the year, and tickets are on sale now. Chocolate and Wine Weekend takes place February 4-6, 2022. Each participating winery features a wine of their choice paired with a delicious dish that has chocolate as a key ingredient. Tickets to this event are sold out. Flights and Bites is a new addition, taking place on Saturday, March 12, 2022. It is a one-day event that includes visits to five wineries for seated, immersive food and wine pairings. Pasta and Wine takes place March 25-27, 2022 and features foods with pasta as a main ingredient, with a variety of savory, delicious recipes. Tickets are $60 (plus taxes and processing fees). We encourage the use of designated drivers and offer tickets for $20 each (plus tax and fees). deck the halls wine tour 2022

In 1986 the Seneca Lake Wine Trail was formed in the heart of New York State’s Finger Lakes Wine Country to attract more visitors to experience its rich history, beauty and production of world-class wines. Today, Seneca Lake Wine Trail is the largest and most active wine trail in New York State with a community of wineries dedicated to creating premium, award-winning wines suitable for every palate principally using grapes harvested within the federally recognized Seneca Lake viticultural area.

Seneca Lake’s natural combination of deep water (at 632 feet it is the deepest of the Finger Lakes) and sloping hillsides provides the ideal micro-climate for grape growing. Its unique geology and topography protect the growth of hardy native grapes and premium hybrids as well as more delicate varieties such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir.

The rich wine history of Seneca Lake can be traced back to 1866, when the Seneca Lake Grape Wine Company opened a winery on the western shores. Then, in 1882, New York State opened an Agricultural Experiment Station on the northern end of the lake (Geneva, New York) for grape breeding and research programs. Their success confirmed Seneca Lake as a prominent player in the grape growing industry. However, with the passage of Prohibition in 1919, the bottom of the grape market fell out and many of Seneca Lake’s vineyards either closed or were replanted to produce grape varieties for the juice or fruit market.

In the early 1970s, Charles Fournier, a young European, planted 20 acres of Vinifera on the east side of Seneca Lake while at the same time German native, Hermann Wiemer, bought and planted 140 acres of Vinifera on the west side of Seneca Lake. The success of these two vineyards, along with the establishment of a wine research program at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, were a catalyst to the revitalization of Seneca Lake as a grape growing and wine producing region. In 1976, New York State passed the Farm Winery Act to encourage grape growers to expand into the wine production business. One year later, Seneca Lake became home to its first new winery: Glenora Wine Cellars, followed by Wagner Vineyards, Herman J. Wiemer Vineyard and Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards.

Today, Seneca Lake Wine Trail’s member wineries have won hundreds of national and international medals and are recognized as world-class producers of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Honey Wines (Meads).

Winery tanks decorated for Christmas at Lakewood Vineyards for the Seneca Lake Deck the Halls Event

19 Wineries in 1 Day? How We Conquered the Famous Seneca Lake Deck the Halls Event

If you live in Upstate New York and you are over 21, you’ve heard someone talk about the Seneca Lake Deck the Halls event. The famous wine trail holiday celebration hits several favorite wineries in the Finger Lakes Wine Region. And the best part is that in addition to the wine and food samples at each winery, every location also gives participants a unique ornament to decorate with at home.

Seneca Lake Deck the Halls Event - 2023 grapevine wreath with ornaments

What is Seneca Lake Deck the Halls?

Deck the Halls is the Seneca Lake Wine Trails most anticipated festival every holiday season. Spread across two separate weekends at the end of November and beginning of December, it’s sure to sell out every year. The main premise of the festival is like any other wine trail event – visit a bunch of wineries while sampling their creations along with a bite of food at each place. But this one adds some Christmas cheer while festival-goers get into the holiday spirit. (Pun intended.)

When you purchase your tickets for Deck the Halls, you will need to choose a starting winery. This helps the festival spread out the guests, so the crowds never get big. At your first winery you will collect your grapevine wreath and you first ornament. At each other participating winery you visit, you’ll collect an additional ornament.

It is worth noting that some of the wineries go above and beyond with their ornaments while others… do not. Nonetheless, there are plenty that were wonderful, made with the spirit of the winery in mind.

Tickets for Seneca Lake’s Deck the Halls

If there is one thing you should know about Deck the Halls, it is that you have to buy your tickets early ! Tickets typically go on sale in July and sell out by August. So while you may not be thinking of Christmas festivities in the hottest part of summer, you’ll miss out if you don’t.

Tickets are available through the Seneca Lake Wine Trail website . Guests can chose a single ticket, a couple’s ticket, or a designated driver ticket. While you save quite a bit of money with the couple’s ticket, keep in mind you will only get one wreath and one ornament per winery. So if you’re not sharing with someone you live with, plan accordingly.

Alternatively, visitors can purchase a weekend package, which includes accommodation for two nights, transportation on Saturday, and tickets to the event.

Tips for Non-couple Couples

If you’re sharing a couple’s ticket with someone outside your home, like I did with my sister-in-law, here are some tips.

First, Most craft stores sell grapevine wreaths, so you can always purchase one on your own. Or you can grab one on Amazon for just $10 .

Secondly, if you’re visiting on the second weekend (toward the end of the festival), you might be able to ask the winery for a second ornament if there is one you both really want. Some wineries will accommodate if they think they will have extras. Alternatively, many of the winery gift shops have other ornaments (sometimes past Deck the Halls ornaments) for sale.

Visiting the wineries during Deck the Halls

For the 2023 Seneca Lake Deck the Halls event, an impressive 19 wineries participated. To be clear, the Seneca Lake Wine Trail does not recommend that you visit all of the wineries in one day. Seriously, you’d have to be crazy to try it. But… call us crazy. Tickets are good for a full weekend, Friday through Sunday. But we had plans on Friday and I had a 6am flight to Hawaii on Sunday. I had no intention of making it to them all. But when you present me with a challenge…

The biggest MVP of the day was definitely my husband. He was such a trooper, driving the three of us to all of the wineries. He earned the nickname “Coach” as he corralled us and shuttled us around Seneca Lake, keeping us on track to visit them all. Coach even took pictures for us and did the purchasing at the wineries when I found wines I liked so we could move quickly.

Secondly, it’s very important for me to note that we did not try all of the samples at all of the wineries . That would be ludicrous. Each winery has one sample with their food sample and then offers to let you try 3 more (on average). Since a typical wine sample is 1-2 ounces, that’s an average of 6 ounces per winery. Multiply that by 19 and that’s 114 ounces… or almost 5 bottles of wine. DO NOT DO THIS IN ONE DAY. If you plan to visit all of the wineries AND maximize your samples, spread it out over the course of the weekend. Even then it’s still a lot of wine!

2023 Deck the Halls Highlights

While the festival in general is incredible, there were a few things that really stood out to me this year:

As for the overall experience, Lakewood Vineyards in Watkins Glen really outdid themselves. They lit up the winery tanks with Christmas lights and led guests into the tasting area with “snowy” footprints on the ground. They had the most delicious cranberry and brie bites, a photo backdrop, and multiple serving stations. Overall, an A+ experience.

On the food note, there were several delicious options that I am adding to my recipe book (one of which I already made!). Shoutout to the corn chowder at Boundary Breaks and the gingerbread cheesecake dip at Fulkerson Winery . But the real winner here is Idol Ridge Winery with their make-your-own s’mores. Yes, they had mini tabletop fires to roast your marshmallow and a homemade vanilla fudge to pair with it. YUM.

Oh, and you get access to all of the recipes from the festival so you can remake your favorites at home.

Final Thoughts

In order to maximize your time and experience at Seneca Lake’s annual Deck the Halls Event, remember these key things.

  • Have a designated driver. Truly, it’s in everyone’s best interest if the people drinking don’t have to worry about driving. At all.
  • Buy your tickets early! Don’t let them sell out.
  • Have a game plan. Know which winery your are starting at and which other wineries are on your do-not-miss list.
  • Dress up and get into the holiday spirit! Seriously, one of the best parts of the event is joining in the frivolity of the season and checking out each other’s ugly sweaters and other holiday wardrobes.
  • Most importantly, HAVE FUN!

Lakewood Vineyards Celebrates 30 Years of Deck The Halls

deck the halls wine tour 2022

Seneca Lake Wine Trail’s Deck the Halls celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year.

The ever-popular event launched in 1992 but paused for two years during the COVID pandemic. Today, the original concept remains intact: guests purchase a passport ticket which includes food and wine pairings at multiple wine trail wineries, all decorated for the holidays. Also included in the ticket price are a grapevine wreath, a collectable ornament at each stop and a printed recipe book. In 2023, a couple’s ticket is $130 with 19 participating wineries. The event runs two weekends (November 17-19 and December 1-3), and always sells out.

How did Deck The Halls become the powerhouse event it is today? Liz Stamp of Lakewood Vineyards, who is credited with originating the idea, tells us the story.

Q: How did the idea of Deck The Halls come to you?

Liz: The wineries started doing events and I thought, this could be a great way to invite people to all of the wineries on the trail. And traffic was so slow in the winter months. At the time, Monty Stamp [Liz’s late father-in-law] was selling grapevine wreaths for extra money, so the idea came of giving a wreath to guests and then unique ornaments at each winery. It was important to have something to collect at each stop.

Q: Describe the first year of Deck The Halls.

Liz: It was 1992 and it was the fourth event the [Seneca Lake Wine] Trail had ever done. We advertised with flyers and radio ads, and then the phone started ringing. Tickets were only available at the door and we did not offer pre-sale at the time. We were hoping for 120 guests but when the phone started ringing we planned for 300. When we opened Saturday morning, people started pouring in and we knew we were going to run out of everything. Lots of people didn’t get the ornament, and we did the best we could with food. We saw over 700 people. We ended up writing down guests’ names on a lined notebook so we could make good on the ornaments.

Q: What do you see for the future of Deck The Halls?

Liz: Make it a festive event and not make it too rushed or crowded. COVID helped us re-evaluate the ticket numbers per weekend. We want to make sure that we are delivering quality and connection with guests. For lots of people, it is their first time here and we want them to return.

Q: What is your advice for someone who is attending Deck The Halls for the first time?

Liz: Try to take advantage of the whole weekend, Friday through Sunday. Don’t rush. There’s time to visit all of the wineries. If you visit a space and it is crowded, skip it and come back later when it isn’t as crowded. Most importantly, enjoy it.

Best places to celebrate New Year 2022 in Moscow

Photo by  Daniil Silantev  on  Unsplash

  • Festive fairs : browse handmade souvenirs and national handicrafts, sip mulled wine and nibble waffles and blini, and admire the sparkling New Year’s decorations at dozens of fairs and markets dotted around Moscow
  • The lap of luxury: if elite celebrations are more your thing, then Moscow does not disappoint. See in the New Year in style at the capital’s 5* hotels and restaurants, with festive programmes, caviar and lobster buffets, and champagne that doesn’t stop flowing…
  • Family friendly fun: Russian New Year is a holiday for all the family. Will your kids enjoy a sumptuous banquet with Ded Moroz, chocolate tasting on Europe’s highest observation deck, or miraculous ice skating performances by Olympic champion figure skaters?
  • Outdoor entertainment: if you’re more of an adventurous type, then New Year’s in Moscow has got you covered – ice rinks and ice slides are the best way to enjoy the wintery wonderland!

New Year’s in Moscow

Celebrating New Year’s is all about the fizz, the fun and the glamour, the city lights shining and the champagne flowing. So, where better place could there possibly be to celebrate this momentous event, than in the biggest city in Europe – Moscow? Bigger is better when it comes to New Year’s, and Moscow doesn’t need to be told twice. For Russians, it is the most important holiday in the calendar – this joyous day is like Christmas and New Year’s all rolled into one. Unlike in Europe and the U.S., where New Year marks the end of the festive period, in Russia the 31 st December is just the beginning and kicks off the holidays that fill those first cold weeks of January. Now is the moment for Russians to really let their hair down and party – will you join them?

Festive fairs

Journey to christmas.

Moscow’s largest celebration is the ‘Journey to Christmas’, with festive events held for several weeks from December to January all over the city. There are fun events for all ages and interests – kids’ shows for the little ones, music for Moscow’s young people, ice rinks and slides for the adventurous ones, markets for foodies, the list goes on… Each of the 27 festival sites around Moscow has a different theme based on Christmas and New Year’s traditions from around the world. Some of the highlights of 2021/22’s Journey to Christmas include:

  • Merchant Christmas at Revolution Square: one of the richest and brightest celebrations in the capital. The theme of this year is medieval Moscow merchants and boyars, so you can expect lots of red, gold and furs, and traditional Russian-style pavilions and decorations peddling festive foods and fun, located in the very heart of Moscow.
  • Christmas Masquerade Ball on Tverskaya Square: have your masks at the ready (yes, those ones too…) to visit the Christmas Masquerade Ball in front of the Moscow City Hall on Tverskaya Square. Decorated with illuminated archways, fir trees, nutcrackers, masquerade masks, and a homely centrepiece with a fireplace and candles, this is sure to warm the heart of anyone who visits!
  • Scandinavian Christmas on Novy Arbat: get some holiday hygge on the Novy Arbat, where four festivals merge into one on this sweeping street. Here you’ll find a mini forest of decorated Christmas trees, cute, Scandi-style pavilions, and a beautiful carousel at the centre.

Moscow’s most famous festive fair takes place on Red Square. The GUM Fair, organised by the famed department store, is the perfect place to bathe in festive cheer and stock up on New Year’s and Christmas treats with a backdrop of the Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral. Here you can find national souvenirs such as decorated felt boots, knitted mittens, Orenburg and Pavlovo Posad shawls and other artistic folk crafts, and warm up from the cold with mulled wine, aromatic sbiten (a honey drink), Russian pancakes, fried Bavarian sausages, Viennese waffles, hot chestnuts and other delights.

The lap of luxury

City of crystals at quadrum, four seasons hotel.

The Four Seasons is one of Moscow’s most opulent hotels, and it organises New Year’s parties to match. At this year’s party, the City of Crystals, guests will celebrate like imperial aristocrats: the program includes ballet, singing and magic performances, traditional Russian plays, an impressive raffle, and DJ sets so you can dance the night away – all with a view of the snow-covered Moscow Kremlin unfolding below. The entertainment will be accompanied by a gastronomic journey of luxury delicacies from across the world – from tuna tataki with truffle ponzu to Kamchatka crab salad with sturgeon caviar. And of course, the champagne will be flowing all night long!

Contact the Four Seasons for New Year’s prices.

Royal Night at the Baltschug Kempinski Hotel

See in the New Year in style at the Kempinski’s Royal Night parties in the Baltschug Grill & Café Kranzler, Panoramic Moskva, and the Library Room.

  • A buffet dinner, French champagne and Russian vodka awaits guests in the Baltschug Grill & Café Kranzler. Also on the menu is a DJ set and festive show programme.
  • The Panoramic Moskva ballroom is a truly opulent setting for your celebration, offering sweeping views over the Kremlin, Red Square and St Basil’s Cathedral. Guests will enjoy a gala dinner of Russian and European cuisine to a background of festive live music, and can enjoy the magic of Red Square’s fireworks from the comfort of the ballroom.
  • Kempinski’s New Year’s gala in their signature Library Room is something a little more special. Guests can enjoy the gourmet buffet and sip free-flowing champagne, vodka and whisky while dancing the night away to a private DJ. Best of all – the Library Room spills out onto a panoramic terrace, offering the ultimate picture-postcard views over Red Square and the Kremlin.

All these New Year’s packages include a complimentary overnight stay on 31 st December and late check out at 3pm. Baltschug Grill package costs 49,500 roubles per person; Panoramic Moskva package 78,000 per person (also includes a Royal Festive Breakfast with Prosecco from 8am to 1pm on 1 st January); Library Room package 96,000 roubles per person (also includes Royal Festive Breakfast).

Festive bonanza at Turandot

Moscow’s elite restaurant, Turandot, is famous for its extravagant celebrations over the festive period. And this year’s certainly don’t disappoint!

The theme of Turandot’s New Year’s party is the gloss, glamour and fun of the 1970s disco! Legendary New York nightclub Studio 54 meets Moscow party vibes, with live music from Sergey Lazarev and Christina Orbakaite, a cocktail-and-disco-glam dress code and a 6-course chef’s menu. Ticket prices are not for the faint of heart, ranging from 55,000 – 199,000 roubles per person, but this truly will be a New Year’s like no other in one of Moscow’s most fashionable restaurants.

If you’re more of an early bird than a night owl, then Turandot’s Christmas Brunch has you covered. It is held from the 7 th -9 th January to celebrate Old Russian Christmas. Pan-European and Asian cuisine and an open bar await you, with dishes including traditional Russian salads and pancakes with crab, champagne sauce and caviar, and you’ll dine in the spectacular Florentine Courtyard, surrounded by unique palace interiors decorated in chinoiserie style. Brunch costs 6,950 roubles including alcohol per adult, 2,450 roubles for kids up to 12 years old.

New Year’s at the Metropol Hotel

One of the most historic hotels in Moscow invites you to its illustrious New Year’s celebration, which promises a fully immersive experience of light, sound, music and dancing. A live band and DJ set will keep the party going, and a ballet performance and magic show will ensure that the excitement doesn’t stop even for a moment. With a festive menu designed by chef Andrei Shmakov and unlimited alcoholic drinks, guests can eat and drink to their hearts content. Little guests are looked after, too, with a kids’ entertainment program.

Tickets start from 55,000 roubles. The night kicks off with a welcome reception at 8:30pm, and the New Year’s celebration begins at 10pm.

Family friendly fun

Panorama360.

Some might say that if you’ve seen one New Year’s celebration, you’ve seen them all – festive trees, singing and dancing, Olivier Salad... If you’re one of these people, then look no further than Panorama360 in Moscow City. Located on the 89 th floor of the Federation Tower, Panorama360 is a place of hyperbole – Europe’s highest observation deck, ice cream and chocolate shop, and now, Europe’s highest New Year’s celebration! Your kids will be in heaven with Panorama360’s New Year’s programme, involving interactive science, magic and light shows, TikTok making with Panorama360’s polar bear mascot, unlimited chocolate and ice cream tasting, festive gifts, and of course access to the observation deck with an unparalleled view over Moscow.

Kids’ New Year at Baltschug Kempinski Hotel

For parents who want to see in the New Year in style, but want an equally exciting experience for their little ones, Kempinski delivers. At the centre of their Kids’ New Year celebrations is Ded Moroz, and his team of professional actors will help make the evening a truly special one. Kids can look forward to dancing around the New Year’s tree, sweet treats and gifts, and a festive menu.

The Snow Queen at Turandot

There’s something at Turandot for all the family – on 5th January, the restaurant will host a New Year's fairy tale "The Snow Queen". The opulent Silver Hall will be transformed into the castle of the Snow Queen, serving a multi-cuisine brunch of more than 20 dishes crafted by Turandot’s chef, Dmitry Eremeev. Festive entertainment includes masterclasses and a disco, and the festivities end with sweet treats from Ded Moroz and Snegurochka.

Magical ice performances

What do you get if you cross Russian ballet, classical music, folklore and wintery weather? Magical New Year’s performances on ice, that’s what! Highlights of the New Year’s repertoire in Moscow include:

  • The Nutcracker at the VTB Arena Park: enter the magical kingdom of Christmas with a magnificent ice production based on Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet.
  • The Snow Queen at Luzhniki: Hans Christian Anderson’s festive fairy tale is brought to life in this New Year’s extravaganza, where the main roles are performed by Russian Olympic champion figure skaters.
  • Swan Lake at Megasport Palace of Sport: another of Tchaikovsky’s famous ballets is transformed into an ice show merging figure skating, classical choreography and acrobatics.

Outdoor entertainment

Fantastic fireworks.

Holding glorious firework displays on holidays has been a Russian tradition since the times of Peter the Great – New Year without fireworks is like New Year without a tree or Olivier Salad! There are locations all over the city where Muscovites can enjoy the beautiful show, but the main firework display begins at midnight on Bolshoy Zamoskvorechy Bridge next to Red Square. Those lucky enough to be in nearby parks, squares and streets will experience 50,000 fireworks released into the sky, a dazzling display welcoming 2022. As this is the most magnificent display in the country, the surrounding streets are packed. Many Muscovites choose to watch the display on television, or head to smaller, but no less wondrous displays elsewhere in the city:

  • Hermitage Garden
  • VDNKh Michurinsky Garden
  • Bauman Garden
  • Izmailovsky Park
  • Sokolniki Park
  • On the Moskva River, opposite Luzhniki Stadium
  • Victory (Pobedy) Park on Poklonnaya Gora

Ice skating and slides

As part of the Journey to Christmas festival, there are 18 ice rinks spread across Moscow where you can skate for free! Aside from these, Moscow’s famous parks make the most of the frozen temperatures to open ice rinks. They include Gorky Park, Izmailovsky Park, Sokolniki Park and Babushkinsky Park. If you prefer a more adrenaline-filled activity, then you’re in luck – ice slides are hugely popular in Russia, and the best ones can be found on Red Square, in the Hermitage Garden, VDNKh, Luzhniki, Bauman Garden, Sokolniki Park and Izmailovsky Park.
